0:00:03 > 0:00:06There are 700,000 burglaries in the UK every year.
0:00:21 > 0:00:23But right across the country,
0:00:23 > 0:00:25dedicated police teams are on the offensive,
0:00:25 > 0:00:30waging war against the criminals who steal from local homeowners.
0:00:30 > 0:00:34Police! Open the door, otherwise entry's going to have to be forced.
0:00:34 > 0:00:38For the victims of these crimes, it can take months, even years,
0:00:38 > 0:00:41to come to terms with what's happened.
0:00:41 > 0:00:43Everything has gone. Everything.
0:00:43 > 0:00:46But in this series, we're about to show them and you
0:00:46 > 0:00:48how we can all beat the burglars.
0:00:48 > 0:00:52This is Crime Scene Rescue.
0:00:56 > 0:01:00Coming up on today's show, we meet 66-year-old widow Olympia.
0:01:00 > 0:01:04Her home has always been her retreat from the world,
0:01:04 > 0:01:08but now her fragile sense of security has been shattered
0:01:08 > 0:01:10after becoming the victim of a burglary.
0:01:10 > 0:01:13I'm really so upset. It's just ridiculous.
0:01:14 > 0:01:19And while the police work hard to track down her stolen items, we do
0:01:19 > 0:01:24everything we can to make Olympia's house as secure as possible.
0:01:24 > 0:01:26That is amazing!
0:01:26 > 0:01:28SIRENS BLARE
0:01:28 > 0:01:31West Yorkshire Police, what's your emergency?
0:01:38 > 0:01:40The West Yorkshire Police protect both rural areas
0:01:40 > 0:01:44and busy cities such as Leeds, and like many large forces,
0:01:44 > 0:01:47they face an ever-present threat of burglaries.
0:01:47 > 0:01:51They have over 200 incidents each week, and for some victims,
0:01:51 > 0:01:55it happens at the most frightening time possible - while they're at home.
0:02:01 > 0:02:02Just try and calm down.
0:02:07 > 0:02:11It's approaching ten in the morning, and I've rushed to a priority call
0:02:11 > 0:02:14a few miles outside Leeds city centre to meet with
0:02:14 > 0:02:18PC Graham Lawton, who's attending his first break-in of the day.
0:02:18 > 0:02:22'The homeowner - Olympia - woke this morning to find
0:02:22 > 0:02:25'she had been burgled while she was asleep in bed.
0:02:25 > 0:02:28'So far she's noticed that her much-loved car, television
0:02:28 > 0:02:31'and some precious jewellery have all been taken.'
0:02:31 > 0:02:36It was an awful feeling because I got up and I looked out of the window
0:02:36 > 0:02:39and I thought, "My car's not there."
0:02:39 > 0:02:43You know, cos I always park it outside. And somebody...
0:02:43 > 0:02:46The annoying part is that somebody else is parked where I park mine.
0:02:46 > 0:02:48I thought, "How have they parked there?"
0:02:48 > 0:02:51I'm looking, "Where's my car?" I thought, "My God, my car's not..."
0:02:51 > 0:02:53It was just an unbelievable feeling.
0:02:53 > 0:02:56But what shocked me more than anything,
0:02:56 > 0:02:59cos you still think somehow it's parked somewhere else, is when
0:02:59 > 0:03:02I came out and I saw that empty. I thought, they've been in the house.
0:03:02 > 0:03:07- Obviously, this is where your telly was.- And stolen the television. - And what time did you get up today?
0:03:07 > 0:03:108.45, I think. 8.40...
0:03:10 > 0:03:14Is it all right if I just go and have a look at the door where they've got in?
0:03:14 > 0:03:18The criminals gained entry by snapping the lock on Olympia's back door.
0:03:18 > 0:03:20Oh, God! I'm sorry. I'm just...
0:03:20 > 0:03:23Don't you worry. You've been through more than enough here.
0:03:23 > 0:03:26I just couldn't believe... The first thing is just disbelief.
0:03:26 > 0:03:28Where's my little car?
0:03:30 > 0:03:33Whilst PC Lawton takes some detailed notes to aid him
0:03:33 > 0:03:39in his investigation, Olympia notices other items were stolen.
0:03:39 > 0:03:41Oh, no! Oh, my camera!
0:03:41 > 0:03:44I'm really so upset. It's just ridiculous.
0:03:48 > 0:03:50I really feel for Olympia.
0:03:50 > 0:03:52She's lost her car, television,
0:03:52 > 0:03:56and a selection of jewellery which included a couple of irreplaceable
0:03:56 > 0:04:0122-carat gold bangles which she'd inherited from her mother.
0:04:01 > 0:04:05Plus, the thieves have taken her camera, which was packed full of memories.
0:04:08 > 0:04:10What really makes me angry, though,
0:04:10 > 0:04:14is that the low lives broke in while she was in bed,
0:04:14 > 0:04:17so they've robbed Olympia of her sense of security, too.
0:04:17 > 0:04:20I really want to see what I can do to help her.
0:04:20 > 0:04:24Is it fair to say, at the moment, you feel quite vulnerable and insecure here?
0:04:24 > 0:04:25Very much so.
0:04:25 > 0:04:31But I was sort of conscious to be careful with having locked doors,
0:04:31 > 0:04:36and it just seems ridiculous that somebody can just
0:04:36 > 0:04:40so easily snap the door and walk into your house while you're in bed,
0:04:40 > 0:04:44and take a television away and steal your car all at the same time.
0:04:44 > 0:04:46I'm just devastated, really.
0:04:46 > 0:04:48This is what I think we can do for you.
0:04:48 > 0:04:53I think we can change your locks, make them a lot more secure
0:04:53 > 0:04:55- so they can't be snapped out and removed.- Yeah.
0:04:55 > 0:05:01- And if they were to snap the lock, what we're going to put on the door, the door won't open.- Right.
0:05:01 > 0:05:03You see, so they won't be able to get in anyway.
0:05:03 > 0:05:06I've noticed round the outside of your house that it's very dark.
0:05:06 > 0:05:09- You've got no lights that I could see on the side.- No.
0:05:09 > 0:05:12Now, a very good thing is putting some lights on there that can
0:05:12 > 0:05:14activate if someone was to walk down the side,
0:05:14 > 0:05:17or you can put them on and it... It lightens it up
0:05:17 > 0:05:21- and it actually works as a really good deterrent for any would-be burglars.- Mm.
0:05:21 > 0:05:25- Is that something you'd be willing to consider, if we put those up? - I would absolutely love that.
0:05:25 > 0:05:29I'm hoping that by making Olympia's house as secure as possible,
0:05:29 > 0:05:32it will begin to feel like her home again.
0:05:32 > 0:05:37The top priority right now is fixing the locks on Olympia's doors,
0:05:37 > 0:05:40so I've drafted in Matthew the locksmith to get straight to work.
0:05:40 > 0:05:43And this is the door what's been broke into.
0:05:43 > 0:05:46As you can see, the handle has been broken.
0:05:46 > 0:05:48We're going to remove the handle,
0:05:48 > 0:05:52we're going to put a snap-safe cylinder on and some PAS 24 handles,
0:05:52 > 0:05:56which will make it a lot, lot more secure than it was.
0:05:59 > 0:06:02While Matthew works to secure the property,
0:06:02 > 0:06:05PC Lawton continues to investigate the burglary.
0:06:05 > 0:06:10What I'm trying to do now is build up a scene where the burglary
0:06:10 > 0:06:13has happened and in between what times.
0:06:13 > 0:06:15I'm visiting local residents to see if any of them
0:06:15 > 0:06:19have heard or seen anything connected with the incident.
0:06:21 > 0:06:26On a normal handle, what we're replacing is just hollow, very, very weak.
0:06:26 > 0:06:32So these are hardened, solid handles and they just do the job.
0:06:32 > 0:06:37Hello, sir. I'm making enquiries regarding a burglary which has
0:06:37 > 0:06:40- happened at your neighbour's house, next door.- Yes.
0:06:40 > 0:06:43- Now, I notice you've got a CCTV camera.- Yeah, yeah.
0:06:43 > 0:06:48Would it be all right if we viewed the footage to see if anything's been captured?
0:06:48 > 0:06:50- Yes, no problem.- Oh, very good.
0:06:57 > 0:07:00There is eight hours' worth of footage here,
0:07:00 > 0:07:05covering the time periods of the burglary of the house next door.
0:07:05 > 0:07:11It'll be my job to view this and see if anything evidentially is on it.
0:07:13 > 0:07:16And that's the job done.
0:07:16 > 0:07:21PC Lawton has spotted another CCTV camera near Olympia's house.
0:07:21 > 0:07:25The Co-operative Funeralcare, they have two cameras, so I'll be
0:07:25 > 0:07:30contacting them today when I go back to the station after doing
0:07:30 > 0:07:33the house to house, and hopefully we'll catch something on it.
0:07:44 > 0:07:47It's a few days later, and at the police station, PC Lawton is on hand
0:07:47 > 0:07:51to provide an update about how the investigation is going.
0:07:53 > 0:07:57Making enquiries nearby at a local business premises,
0:07:57 > 0:08:01we've recovered more CCTV,
0:08:01 > 0:08:09viewed that, and it shows the actual Mini moving away at around 3.12am.
0:08:10 > 0:08:16Also, there's a youth on the video who appears to be keeping watch
0:08:16 > 0:08:20and walking up and down outside the address.
0:08:20 > 0:08:25Enquires are on at the minute trying to identify that youth.
0:08:25 > 0:08:28The police have also been busy contacting local shops.
0:08:28 > 0:08:32They've given them a description of Olympia's jewellery, in particular,
0:08:32 > 0:08:36her prized 22-carat gold bangles, which are unique.
0:08:36 > 0:08:40PC Lawton hopes they may get a lead on the criminals
0:08:40 > 0:08:42if they try to sell these cherished items.
0:08:44 > 0:08:47Back at Olympia's house, Neil the electrician has turned up to
0:08:47 > 0:08:50fix an outside security light to the side of the house.
0:08:51 > 0:08:54But I really want to go the extra mile for Olympia.
0:08:54 > 0:08:56Her current alarm is outdated,
0:08:56 > 0:09:00so I've also arranged for Nathan to fit a new top-of-the-range burglar system,
0:09:00 > 0:09:04in a bid to make her feel much safer in her home.
0:09:04 > 0:09:06So, Nathan, there's mention of a panic button.
0:09:06 > 0:09:09Is that something you're going to be installing here as well?
0:09:09 > 0:09:13Yes, that'll be running to the master bedroom, basically.
0:09:13 > 0:09:16If there's any noise she feels unsure of,
0:09:16 > 0:09:20- she can press the button and the whole alarm system will go off. - Fantastic. Thank you.
0:09:20 > 0:09:22Homes which have a visible alarm
0:09:22 > 0:09:26are around three times less likely to be burgled.
0:09:27 > 0:09:31Outside, Neil and Nathan are both reaching new heights,
0:09:31 > 0:09:34especially as the new exterior security lighting is being placed
0:09:34 > 0:09:37well out of the way so it can't easily be smashed.
0:09:39 > 0:09:41So, Neil, you've put the light in, it looks great.
0:09:41 > 0:09:45How's that actually going to turn on? Is it going to be activated by movement?
0:09:45 > 0:09:47Yeah, it'll be activated by movement,
0:09:47 > 0:09:49only on a night, like, so it won't come on through the day.
0:09:49 > 0:09:53Not only is this going to help Olympia who lives here, if she's walking through,
0:09:53 > 0:09:56it's going to light up for her, but if there was an intruder sneaking around,
0:09:56 > 0:09:59- they're going to get lit up like a Christmas tree as well.- Yeah.
0:09:59 > 0:10:01Excellent, Neil. Brilliant work. Thank you very much.
0:10:01 > 0:10:04I'm hoping that Olympia will now feel much safer
0:10:04 > 0:10:08thanks to the additional security features that are now in place.
0:10:08 > 0:10:10So, Olympia, it's been a few days now.
0:10:10 > 0:10:12How have you been after everything that happened?
0:10:12 > 0:10:17I was actually in shock for at least two, nearly three days.
0:10:17 > 0:10:22But, also, I think I really expected the things to turn up,
0:10:22 > 0:10:24and it's gone through different stages.
0:10:24 > 0:10:30I've gone from still being in shock, to being very upset,
0:10:30 > 0:10:35to being angry, and I still find myself that I'm in this mode.
0:10:35 > 0:10:39Now, I know when we first met, when this actually first happened,
0:10:39 > 0:10:41you said you felt very vulnerable being in the home because of
0:10:41 > 0:10:44the way that they snapped the lock off your door and actually just
0:10:44 > 0:10:49- helped themselves into your house, stole your TV...- I just can't believe how they can do that.
0:10:49 > 0:10:51It must be such an awful feeling for you.
0:10:51 > 0:10:54But what we want to do is make sure that never happens again and...
0:10:54 > 0:10:57- Oh, please.- And we've made sure that the locks have been changed.
0:10:57 > 0:11:02So the locks that you've got on now are so much more secure than what you had before. Front and back.
0:11:02 > 0:11:04We've also put in a light down the side
0:11:04 > 0:11:07so that if anyone was to be sneaking down the side of your house,
0:11:07 > 0:11:10that's going to light up straight away.
0:11:10 > 0:11:13- A really good deterrent, that.- Mm. - And we've also, as you can see,
0:11:13 > 0:11:16- put in the new intruder alarm in your home.- Right.
0:11:16 > 0:11:20So, this way, you can set this if you're asleep,
0:11:20 > 0:11:23and that alone, if that's armed, that will put anyone off.
0:11:23 > 0:11:26Cos if they come in and set that off and all the bells are going,
0:11:26 > 0:11:28it's really going to be a great deterrent,
0:11:28 > 0:11:31because we obviously don't ever want this to happen to you again.
0:11:31 > 0:11:34We just want you to feel at home here in your house.
0:11:38 > 0:11:40It's a few weeks since the burglary,
0:11:40 > 0:11:44and I've heard that Olympia is still really struggling and continues
0:11:44 > 0:11:47to feel vulnerable, despite the extra security measures we've added.
0:11:47 > 0:11:51I'm really committed to getting her back on track,
0:11:51 > 0:11:54so I've come back to see if there's anything more we can do.
0:11:54 > 0:11:56So, Olympia, how are you feeling at the moment?
0:11:56 > 0:12:01I'm really, really surprised how much it has affected me.
0:12:01 > 0:12:06It's just as though it's a very late reaction. It's shock.
0:12:06 > 0:12:11I cannot forget about it, because on a night, I either stay up very late
0:12:11 > 0:12:14and fall asleep on the sofa, and then I think,
0:12:14 > 0:12:19"Oh, my God, I could have been asleep there when they broke in," and...
0:12:19 > 0:12:21then I will take the television upstairs
0:12:21 > 0:12:23so that it acts as a background music.
0:12:23 > 0:12:26Or, I think if anyone does break in, you know,
0:12:26 > 0:12:29they will hear sound upstairs and it might deter them.
0:12:29 > 0:12:33So, I'm constantly thinking about it all the time.
0:12:33 > 0:12:37And, erm, I've not been sleeping very well.
0:12:37 > 0:12:40This isn't on. You do feel vulnerable.
0:12:40 > 0:12:43You've got no right to feel like that, because no-one...
0:12:43 > 0:12:45It shouldn't be fair. It's not fair on you.
0:12:45 > 0:12:47It's not fair that this has happened.
0:12:47 > 0:12:51So we're going to try and help you, and try and get your home back.
0:12:51 > 0:12:54Because, at the moment, it doesn't feel like that, does it?
0:12:54 > 0:12:59'Sadly, it's usual for victims to lose confidence after a break-in.
0:12:59 > 0:13:04'In fact, one in four people report difficulty in sleeping after being burgled.
0:13:04 > 0:13:08'But it's my mission to restore Olympia's sense of wellbeing,
0:13:08 > 0:13:10'so she can sleep peacefully in her own bed again.
0:13:10 > 0:13:15'Crime prevention expert PC Paul Croft is here to suggest further security measures.'
0:13:15 > 0:13:18So, Paul, you're having a look at Olympia's house here
0:13:18 > 0:13:21just to see if there's anything else we can do to try and up security,
0:13:21 > 0:13:24cos she's clearly still feeling very vulnerable.
0:13:24 > 0:13:27We've changed the locks on the doors, you've had a look at those and think they're OK.
0:13:27 > 0:13:30- I think they're great. - What about the lighting, though?
0:13:30 > 0:13:32We've put one light on the side, which I'll show you in a moment.
0:13:32 > 0:13:34On the back, there's nothing here.
0:13:34 > 0:13:37- Do you think we should think about putting one in?- I do, really.
0:13:37 > 0:13:40If we look up and down the street a little bit, next door have got
0:13:40 > 0:13:43lights either side of the door which, to me, although there are
0:13:43 > 0:13:47street lamps present, the fact that they've got those is indicating that
0:13:47 > 0:13:50perhaps when it's dark it is quite dark down the back of this street.
0:13:50 > 0:13:53So, yeah, I think it would be of benefit to put some
0:13:53 > 0:13:56dusk-to-dawn lighting either side of this door
0:13:56 > 0:13:59just to give it that ambient glow in the back garden.
0:13:59 > 0:14:02Nothing too harsh. It's just when it gets dark, the light will come on
0:14:02 > 0:14:04and illuminate this area so no-one could be sneaking around
0:14:04 > 0:14:06- That's right. - I think we can do that.
0:14:06 > 0:14:08If we go round and have a look at the side,
0:14:08 > 0:14:11we'll show you the light we've put in, and give me your thoughts.
0:14:11 > 0:14:13Now, we've put this in here.
0:14:13 > 0:14:17Purposely, it was put in really high so no-one's going to throw anything
0:14:17 > 0:14:19and smash that light down there.
0:14:19 > 0:14:22It's going to be quite strong, but if anyone's sneaking around in the dark,
0:14:22 > 0:14:24it's going to be bright and illuminate the area.
0:14:24 > 0:14:26Yeah. It's ideal, is that.
0:14:26 > 0:14:28If you're going to fit a light like this with a PIR on it,
0:14:28 > 0:14:32you have to fit it out of the height that somebody can reach,
0:14:32 > 0:14:34- and there's no way anybody's going to reach that.- OK.
0:14:34 > 0:14:37So that's the light on the side, and this is the front of the property.
0:14:37 > 0:14:41Again, the locks have been changed. Are you happy with the standard of these locks?
0:14:41 > 0:14:43Do you think these are as good as we'll get here?
0:14:43 > 0:14:46Definitely. They're the best that you'll get. Same for the back.
0:14:46 > 0:14:49And the front - identical - which is great. I'm very pleased with those.
0:14:49 > 0:14:52'I'm pleased that Paul thinks we've already made some big steps
0:14:52 > 0:14:55'in the right direction with the security at Olympia's house.
0:14:55 > 0:14:58'However, there's still more which can be done.
0:14:58 > 0:15:01'I'm going to get on the phone to some local tradespeople
0:15:01 > 0:15:04'to see if we can make Olympia's house even more secure,
0:15:04 > 0:15:07'and help rebuild her love for her home.'
0:15:10 > 0:15:14Hi, Ian, it's Rav. Charlotte, it's Rav.
0:15:14 > 0:15:16Alex, hi, it's Rav. Ian, it's Rav here.
0:15:16 > 0:15:19I think you could help us out with something, if you're available.
0:15:19 > 0:15:23Obviously, since the burglary, she's not felt at home at all,
0:15:23 > 0:15:28and I think if you can try and change that for her, you'd really make a massive difference.
0:15:28 > 0:15:31And we've actually put in a new burglar alarm for her,
0:15:31 > 0:15:34so she's got a brand new system, and if you can tie it in with that,
0:15:34 > 0:15:36I think that will be absolutely spot on.
0:15:36 > 0:15:39I've just been to see your sister - Olympia -
0:15:39 > 0:15:42and I think we can help her out, but what I want to do is
0:15:42 > 0:15:45get as many people round as possible to make this happen.
0:15:45 > 0:15:46Charlotte, that's brilliant.
0:15:46 > 0:15:50I'll send you the details and I'll meet you over at the address.
0:15:54 > 0:15:57Whilst my band of helpers get ready for action,
0:15:57 > 0:16:01there's some interesting news regarding the police investigation.
0:16:01 > 0:16:05PC Graham Lawton has got a potential lead on the whereabouts
0:16:05 > 0:16:07of Olympia's 22-carat gold bangles.
0:16:07 > 0:16:11An unknown female has rung a local jewellery shop saying
0:16:11 > 0:16:14she has a couple of gold bracelets to sell.
0:16:14 > 0:16:18Suspecting they may be Olympia's, the shop has been in touch with the police.
0:16:18 > 0:16:21With regards to the jeweller's shop, what we will do,
0:16:21 > 0:16:24if we've got the staffing levels available,
0:16:24 > 0:16:28officers in plain clothes will be put inside the shop,
0:16:28 > 0:16:32probably at the back of the shop so they can't be seen, and
0:16:32 > 0:16:37we'll try and identify the customer and the bangles when they come in.
0:16:39 > 0:16:43It's a positive line of enquiry for the burglary.
0:16:43 > 0:16:46We've got that and the CCTV evidence,
0:16:46 > 0:16:49so we're moving forward nicely, I think.
0:16:54 > 0:16:55It's early morning,
0:16:55 > 0:16:59and time for a still-shaken Olympia to leave her home of many years
0:16:59 > 0:17:02so we can get on with the rest of our work here.
0:17:02 > 0:17:05Weeks have passed since the burglary,
0:17:05 > 0:17:07but the feelings of distress have not.
0:17:07 > 0:17:10It's time to use every ounce of energy we have
0:17:10 > 0:17:12to make this home as secure as possible.
0:17:16 > 0:17:18My band of helpers are on their way.
0:17:18 > 0:17:21We've drafted in Olympia's family and tradespeople
0:17:21 > 0:17:26from across the neighbourhood, and they're desperate to lend a hand.
0:17:26 > 0:17:28OK, thank you to everyone for coming round so quickly.
0:17:28 > 0:17:32The reason I've called you is to help Olympia out, who lives in this house.
0:17:32 > 0:17:36Now, she was asleep in her bed, and someone broke in and burgled her.
0:17:36 > 0:17:40As you can imagine, she feels extremely nervous and vulnerable staying here.
0:17:40 > 0:17:43Well, I want to change that, and I can only do that with your help.
0:17:43 > 0:17:46I want to get in there, let's fix this place up, let's make it
0:17:46 > 0:17:49so much safer and more secure than it's ever been.
0:17:49 > 0:17:51And Charlotte, as a little extra, I want you to have a look
0:17:51 > 0:17:54on the inside and see if there's something you can do there
0:17:54 > 0:17:57to make her feel like she can relax again in her own home.
0:17:57 > 0:18:00So, let's get in there and fix this place up.
0:18:00 > 0:18:01- ALL:- Yeah!
0:18:04 > 0:18:08As well as further updating the security on Olympia's home,
0:18:08 > 0:18:11I also want to give her bedroom a facelift to help banish
0:18:11 > 0:18:15the bad memories this room still has following the break-in.
0:18:15 > 0:18:18Designer Charlotte Brewer will lead the transformation of this space.
0:18:18 > 0:18:22Olympia's not done a lot to the room since it was originally decorated,
0:18:22 > 0:18:24so we want to try and really update it,
0:18:24 > 0:18:26freshen it up and give it a whole new feel
0:18:26 > 0:18:30so she feels comfortable in a space that she can really relax in.
0:18:30 > 0:18:32So, maybe some calming colours, that sort of thing,
0:18:32 > 0:18:37- so she can come and relax up here and put what happened downstairs behind her.- Yeah, exactly.
0:18:37 > 0:18:39She's got quite a classic, traditional style, so I think we'll
0:18:39 > 0:18:42use that as the basis of the design and then bring in some more
0:18:42 > 0:18:47glamorous elements to kind of warm it up and make it really comfortable for her.
0:18:52 > 0:18:55Yeah, I've been burgled a couple of times myself.
0:18:55 > 0:18:59I live in the local area, so it's nice to be able to help out.
0:18:59 > 0:19:02I've been there myself, so I know how difficult it is.
0:19:13 > 0:19:17Alongside the changes being made in Olympia's bedroom,
0:19:17 > 0:19:21we are continuing to improve the security throughout.
0:19:21 > 0:19:26Downstairs, lighting expert Ian is fitting an intelligent timer circuit
0:19:26 > 0:19:31which will turn internal lights on and off in a random pattern.
0:19:31 > 0:19:34So, Ian, I can see you're doing some work on the light here.
0:19:34 > 0:19:36What is this you're putting in?
0:19:36 > 0:19:38Basically, I'm installing an intelligent lighting system.
0:19:38 > 0:19:41You can control this system with your mobile phone and that sort of thing.
0:19:41 > 0:19:44- Wow!- Yeah, it's fully online, so you can access it through a network.
0:19:44 > 0:19:48If she is at home and she sets the alarm at night to go to bed, the same thing can happen.
0:19:48 > 0:19:51We can have the ground floor lights coming on, so it won't interrupt her.
0:19:51 > 0:19:53Brilliant. That sounds absolutely great.
0:19:53 > 0:19:56- I'll let you crack on, cos you're nearly finished.- Getting there.
0:19:56 > 0:19:59- I think she's going to be very happy with that.- Good.- Thank you.
0:20:07 > 0:20:10Real headway is being made in Olympia's bedroom,
0:20:10 > 0:20:14and it's not just local tradespeople who are getting stuck in.
0:20:16 > 0:20:20Alex, great to see you. Obviously, Olympia's brother, you know her
0:20:20 > 0:20:22better than anyone else. Do you think by trying to do up
0:20:22 > 0:20:25this bedroom to give her somewhere where she can relax again,
0:20:25 > 0:20:27do you think that's going to help her out after what happened?
0:20:27 > 0:20:30Oh, I'm sure it will. This will cheer her up no end.
0:20:30 > 0:20:32Well, that's what we really want to do.
0:20:32 > 0:20:36There's work to be done, but it's already looking like a completely different room.
0:20:36 > 0:20:39- So you think this is going to be her taste?- I'm sure it will be.
0:20:39 > 0:20:43- This is wonderful compared to what she had before.- Mm-hmm.
0:20:43 > 0:20:47And she will love this, so you're doing a marvellous job. Thank you.
0:20:47 > 0:20:50Brilliant. Alex, I'll leave you to it. Thank you for coming over.
0:20:50 > 0:20:52I know she's going to be very, very pleased.
0:20:52 > 0:20:56Outside, Ian is fitting lights on each side of Olympia's
0:20:56 > 0:20:59exterior doors which will come on from dusk to dawn.
0:20:59 > 0:21:04We're also adding sash jammers to the windows to make them much safer.
0:21:12 > 0:21:16It's early evening, and while commuters are heading home
0:21:16 > 0:21:21from a busy day at work, the police remain on the trail of the burglars.
0:21:21 > 0:21:25Back at the station, PC Graham Lawton has an update regarding
0:21:25 > 0:21:29Olympia's much-loved gold bangles that were a gift from her mother.
0:21:29 > 0:21:33We had enquiries to make at the local jeweller's shop
0:21:33 > 0:21:38where a female had offered some similar property for sale.
0:21:38 > 0:21:41We had an operation planned for the Saturday
0:21:41 > 0:21:44when she was due to come into the shop.
0:21:44 > 0:21:47Unfortunately, there was very heavy snowfall,
0:21:47 > 0:21:50and the lady never showed up to the premises.
0:21:50 > 0:21:53I have been in touch with the jeweller
0:21:53 > 0:21:56and the female has never got back in touch,
0:21:56 > 0:22:00so that side of the investigation has gone a bit cold at the moment.
0:22:02 > 0:22:05Alongside the investigation into the stolen bangles,
0:22:05 > 0:22:08the police have been actively checking roadside cameras
0:22:08 > 0:22:13for signs of Olympia's car, and their hard work has yielded results.
0:22:15 > 0:22:19The car has been recovered, but in a number of parts.
0:22:19 > 0:22:24It was recovered from a lock-up garage where 16 other vehicles
0:22:24 > 0:22:28from similar burglaries were recovered also.
0:22:28 > 0:22:33I think the main thing is we don't lose sight, the enquiry
0:22:33 > 0:22:38is still focused, and it's very much active at this moment in time.
0:22:41 > 0:22:45Back at Olympia's house, my team of Good Samaritans are determined
0:22:45 > 0:22:49to complete her bedroom before she returns tomorrow morning.
0:22:49 > 0:22:53So it's no surprise they're prepared to work well into the night
0:22:53 > 0:22:54on the finishing touches.
0:23:05 > 0:23:09It's early morning, just hours before Olympia's homecoming,
0:23:09 > 0:23:13and West Yorkshire's crime prevention expert, PC Paul Croft,
0:23:13 > 0:23:17has returned to review the final security upgrade.
0:23:17 > 0:23:21Since his last visit, we've added sash jammers to the windows,
0:23:21 > 0:23:25dusk-till-dawn exterior security lights, and a timer circuit inside
0:23:25 > 0:23:28which will turn internal lights on and off in a pattern.
0:23:30 > 0:23:33'These new measures complement our earlier security work,
0:23:33 > 0:23:36'which included fitting a new top-of-the-range alarm system,
0:23:36 > 0:23:38'a panic alarm in the bedroom,
0:23:38 > 0:23:41'a powerful motion-triggered light on the side of Olympia's house,
0:23:41 > 0:23:45'and anti-snap locks on her front and back doors.
0:23:45 > 0:23:47'So what's Paul's verdict?'
0:23:48 > 0:23:51In terms of security for this house,
0:23:51 > 0:23:53I think before the offence was committed,
0:23:53 > 0:23:58we were probably looking at something around about three or four out of ten, possibly.
0:23:58 > 0:24:01And after the work that's been done, again, we're looking eight,
0:24:01 > 0:24:06maybe shading a nine on that one, so I'm very, very impressed with it.
0:24:06 > 0:24:07So, a job well done.
0:24:09 > 0:24:13'The moment of truth has come for Olympia, and I've got high hopes
0:24:13 > 0:24:16'that she'll be thrilled to bits with the work that we've done.'
0:24:16 > 0:24:19Now, Olympia, obviously, we changed the locks already and we
0:24:19 > 0:24:22put the alarm on, but I know you still felt a little bit vulnerable.
0:24:22 > 0:24:26We've made some extra changes as well. We've put on a new light.
0:24:26 > 0:24:31- That's solar powered. That's going to give off some gentle lighting, so no-one can hide around there.- Yeah.
0:24:31 > 0:24:34And on the inside, we've also put an additional security feature in
0:24:34 > 0:24:37- that I want to show you. - Have you?- Mm-hmm.- Oh, right!
0:24:44 > 0:24:47Olympia, as an additional security feature,
0:24:47 > 0:24:49you can see, there, the light switch.
0:24:49 > 0:24:51- Oh, yes.- That controls all your lights down here.
0:24:51 > 0:24:54You've got different settings for how bright you want the light,
0:24:54 > 0:24:56- but the really clever bit...- Mm-hmm.
0:24:56 > 0:25:00If you set the burglar alarm, they will turn the lights on and off, randomly.
0:25:00 > 0:25:04That is AMAZING. You know, that's...
0:25:04 > 0:25:07the best thing that you could have possibly done for me,
0:25:07 > 0:25:12because I'm always told, you know, to put a light on when I go out.
0:25:12 > 0:25:17- And I can never be bothered to set these little clock things.- Mm-hmm.
0:25:17 > 0:25:21And then you're carrying, aren't you, sort of a table lamp somewhere.
0:25:21 > 0:25:25- And that is just absolutely fantastic.- Brilliant.
0:25:25 > 0:25:28Upstairs, Olympia's bedroom was looking tired.
0:25:28 > 0:25:30It hadn't been updated in years,
0:25:30 > 0:25:34and since the burglary, it's been the scene of many sleepless nights.
0:25:34 > 0:25:38I wanted to give this room a new lease of life and to give Olympia
0:25:38 > 0:25:42a brand new start, removing all the bad associations of the burglary.
0:25:42 > 0:25:43Hopefully, with our help,
0:25:43 > 0:25:47she'll be able to get a good night's sleep from now on.
0:25:47 > 0:25:50So, Olympia, as a little extra,
0:25:50 > 0:25:54we wanted to give you your home back, and hopefully,
0:25:54 > 0:25:56you'd like your new bedroom.
0:25:56 > 0:25:58SHE GASPS
0:25:58 > 0:26:00Oh, my God!
0:26:00 > 0:26:03Oh, wow!
0:26:04 > 0:26:09Oh, that is fab... Oh, my goodness! That is...
0:26:09 > 0:26:12Because we know how you felt so unsettled after what happened,
0:26:12 > 0:26:14and we wanted you to have some happy memories back.
0:26:14 > 0:26:16That is amazing!
0:26:18 > 0:26:20- And the curtains. - Yeah, special curtains.
0:26:20 > 0:26:22We even had Alex round with a paintbrush.
0:26:22 > 0:26:25- You didn't!- We did. - Oh, he's a sweetie.
0:26:25 > 0:26:29Oh, and the photograph of me as a baby!
0:26:29 > 0:26:31That is fabulous.
0:26:31 > 0:26:37Oh, I can't believe it. That is really, really, really gorgeous.
0:26:37 > 0:26:40There was a lot of people involved to make this happen
0:26:40 > 0:26:43and they're outside.
0:26:43 > 0:26:46So, would you like to meet them?
0:26:46 > 0:26:48Gosh. I don't know what to say to them!
0:26:48 > 0:26:51What do you say when they've done all this?
0:27:01 > 0:27:05So, Olympia, none of this would have been possible without
0:27:05 > 0:27:08- lots of people that have rushed down to help you out.- Wow!
0:27:08 > 0:27:11- Wow!- So if you come down, I'll introduce you to some of them.
0:27:11 > 0:27:14- All these people.- Yeah. They're all local tradesmen and women.
0:27:14 > 0:27:18But it's so wonderful. I understand why it's taken so many people to do.
0:27:18 > 0:27:22- Thank you very much. It's fabulous. - Alex, your brother's over there as well. He came to help.
0:27:22 > 0:27:23- Where is he?- There he is.
0:27:23 > 0:27:25Hiya! You've actually helped, have you?
0:27:25 > 0:27:27What a lovely sight that is.
0:27:27 > 0:27:30All these local tradesmen and women and family members,
0:27:30 > 0:27:34rushing over to help someone who so desperately needed them.
0:27:34 > 0:27:37And I think we've managed to take away some of those bad memories
0:27:37 > 0:27:40and given Olympia a load more happy new ones.
0:27:40 > 0:27:42The bed and everything. It's lovely.
0:27:42 > 0:27:45It's really good to see the community come out to help Olympia,
0:27:45 > 0:27:47and they've really pulled together, and that's what
0:27:47 > 0:27:50we want to see across all our neighbourhoods in West Yorkshire.
0:27:50 > 0:27:54You know, it was obvious what she had before was not enough,
0:27:54 > 0:27:56and what she has now really looks so good.
0:27:56 > 0:27:59Thanks, Olympia.
