0:00:03 > 0:00:06In the UK, there's a burglary every 45 seconds.

0:00:20 > 0:00:23But right across the country

0:00:23 > 0:00:25dedicated police teams are on the offensive,

0:00:25 > 0:00:29waging war against the criminals who steal from local homeowners.

0:00:29 > 0:00:30Police!

0:00:30 > 0:00:34Come and open the door otherwise entry's going to have to be forced.

0:00:34 > 0:00:37For the victims of these crimes it can take months,

0:00:37 > 0:00:40even years to come to terms with what's happened.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43And she'd had it years and years and years.

0:00:43 > 0:00:46But in this series we're about to show them and you

0:00:46 > 0:00:50how we can all beat the burglars.

0:00:50 > 0:00:52This is Crime Scene Rescue.

0:00:55 > 0:00:58Coming up, we meet Dave and Dee and their two young children,

0:00:58 > 0:01:01six-year-old Charlie and three-year-old Poppy,

0:01:01 > 0:01:04a family whose home is at the heart of their lives.

0:01:04 > 0:01:07Dee and the kids just mean everything to me, you know.

0:01:07 > 0:01:11They're fantastic, you know. They make my world.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14But it's all literally been turned upside down after being burgled,

0:01:14 > 0:01:17and the children have been left traumatised.

0:01:17 > 0:01:21And she was visibly shaking as well when she saw... It was when

0:01:21 > 0:01:24she saw the window and everything there so, she was upset, yeah.

0:01:24 > 0:01:26She was very upset.

0:01:26 > 0:01:30So whilst the police try to catch the criminals, I take on

0:01:30 > 0:01:34the massive challenge of making their house a safe and secure home.

0:01:34 > 0:01:37It feels like you've got your family space back again.

0:01:37 > 0:01:40- Oh, wow! - Fantastic. Wow! That's amazing.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49West Yorkshire is policed by around 5,000 officers,

0:01:49 > 0:01:51busy battling against crime.

0:01:58 > 0:02:02It's 7.45pm and a break-in has just been reported.

0:02:02 > 0:02:05A police response team has been immediately despatched

0:02:05 > 0:02:08to a property a few miles from Leeds city centre,

0:02:08 > 0:02:12where a family has returned home to discover they have been burgled.

0:02:21 > 0:02:23Hello, David.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26PC Graham Lawton is first on the scene.

0:02:30 > 0:02:31- I'm angry and annoyed.- Yeah?

0:02:31 > 0:02:32Very angry.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35And the fact that they've so brazenly done it as well,

0:02:35 > 0:02:37by smashing a window like that.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39It doesn't matter what lock you've got in your door, does it?

0:02:39 > 0:02:42They're desperate to get in, aren't they?

0:02:42 > 0:02:45They've took the iPads and the laptops and the kids' DS,

0:02:45 > 0:02:48that kind of thing, and then they've gone upstairs to our bedroom

0:02:48 > 0:02:50and they've gone through the top drawers,

0:02:50 > 0:02:51riffled through there to see.

0:02:51 > 0:02:55They've looked in the jewellery boxes and things.

0:02:55 > 0:02:57I feel a bit sick. I feel it in my tummy.

0:02:57 > 0:02:59I don't know if that's... Yeah, anger and...

0:02:59 > 0:03:01I'm very angry and, you know,

0:03:01 > 0:03:03to be fair, it's not the first time this has happened as well,

0:03:03 > 0:03:06- so it leaves you feeling a bit vulnerable, to be fair. - Vulnerable, yeah.

0:03:06 > 0:03:08They've tried before to get in,

0:03:08 > 0:03:10where they've broken a lock on the door,

0:03:10 > 0:03:12that was probably about six months or so ago,

0:03:12 > 0:03:15and then they've come back and they've obviously got in this time,

0:03:15 > 0:03:16but they've just used brute force.

0:03:16 > 0:03:20The thing that unnerves me the most is the fact that

0:03:20 > 0:03:23the last time it happened we had literally gone out

0:03:23 > 0:03:25and we were only out 45 minutes.

0:03:25 > 0:03:28And then this time Dave's gone out to pick me up,

0:03:28 > 0:03:31and so obviously we're being watched.

0:03:33 > 0:03:36Whilst the family come to terms with what's happened,

0:03:36 > 0:03:41PC Lawton is wasting no time and is conducting door-to-door enquiries,

0:03:41 > 0:03:44and he's already beginning to piece together what's happened.

0:03:45 > 0:03:49It appears that the offenders have come into the back garden,

0:03:49 > 0:03:52forced an entry to the garage.

0:03:52 > 0:03:54- They just got in that top corner, yeah?- Yeah.

0:03:54 > 0:03:56Is anything you can see that's missing

0:03:56 > 0:03:57that they might have used...?

0:03:57 > 0:04:00- They've had a go at them drawers there.- Yeah.

0:04:00 > 0:04:03And then come back to the rear patio doors.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06A blunt instrument has cracked the glass.

0:04:06 > 0:04:08- They've took our son's Nintendo. - Christmas present.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11A Christmas present, so he was really upset

0:04:11 > 0:04:13when he's heard about that. He's been in tears about that.

0:04:13 > 0:04:17The first thing he said was, "Have they taken my teddy?"

0:04:17 > 0:04:23He just sobbed and was heartbroken, "But Santa got me that."

0:04:23 > 0:04:26And Poppy said, "Have they been in my dolls' house?"

0:04:26 > 0:04:29She's very upset, wasn't she?

0:04:29 > 0:04:34Yeah, she said she felt really sad. She went, "I feel sad, Mummy."

0:04:34 > 0:04:36She was visibly shaken as well.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39And they've took some of your jewellery, took one of your rings.

0:04:39 > 0:04:41- You got for when you graduated. - Yeah. Graduation.

0:04:41 > 0:04:44I suppose the things like the iPad and the DS we can replace,

0:04:44 > 0:04:47but that had sentimental value that so...

0:04:52 > 0:04:55It's getting late, and the most important thing now

0:04:55 > 0:04:57is to secure the property for the night.

0:04:59 > 0:05:02Thankfully, Dave and Dee's friend Keith

0:05:02 > 0:05:03has rushed round to help them out.

0:05:05 > 0:05:08DRILLING

0:05:18 > 0:05:22It's the crack of dawn, and I'm keen to get things moving to help

0:05:22 > 0:05:25the family put the burglary behind them.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28But first, Scenes of Crime Officer Graham Bottomley

0:05:28 > 0:05:32needs to comb Dave and Dee's house for any forensic evidence.

0:05:32 > 0:05:36He's hunting for blood, fingerprints, footprints and DNA.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39So they've put like a screwdriver in there or something

0:05:39 > 0:05:41and then popped it and then the glass has gone,

0:05:41 > 0:05:44and there was just a...like, just a nice entrance door there

0:05:44 > 0:05:47- so they could get in. - Just a nice doorway just to get in.

0:05:47 > 0:05:51- And the rest is just all smashed above there.- Just in and out.

0:05:56 > 0:06:00If he can secure forensic evidence from the scene,

0:06:00 > 0:06:04this will give the police a 20% greater chance of catching the thief.

0:06:04 > 0:06:07We've got glove marks pulling this down.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10You've got a similar kind of mark on your window outside.

0:06:10 > 0:06:11Right, OK.

0:06:11 > 0:06:14It's just a big game, really, we just carry on chasing them.

0:06:14 > 0:06:17If they're in the habit of smashing glass they might cut themselves,

0:06:17 > 0:06:18they might leave us other things,

0:06:18 > 0:06:21we might get footwear from another scene,

0:06:21 > 0:06:23and we'll just keep building up a picture of these burglars,

0:06:23 > 0:06:25because they'll do more than this one, obviously.

0:06:25 > 0:06:27They'll do quite a few.

0:06:27 > 0:06:31I'm keen to turn this hideous situation around.

0:06:31 > 0:06:33I want to firm up the security

0:06:33 > 0:06:35and put the heart back into this family's home.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37So I've come to meet them.

0:06:37 > 0:06:39So, Dee and Dave, the first thing I've got to ask is,

0:06:39 > 0:06:42is how are you doing at the moment after what happened?

0:06:42 > 0:06:46Well, really, the kids have been a bit upset about everything

0:06:46 > 0:06:48that's gone on, you know.

0:06:48 > 0:06:52Poppy's not slept so well, she's been coming into our bed at night.

0:06:52 > 0:06:54We've had to keep the curtains closed,

0:06:54 > 0:06:57certainly the one where the window's been smashed, to cover over them

0:06:57 > 0:06:59- so it doesn't remind them. - They don't like seeing that.

0:06:59 > 0:07:02Charlie, this is your room where you used to play, isn't it?

0:07:02 > 0:07:04How do you feel about it?

0:07:04 > 0:07:08Obviously, quite upset because, you know...

0:07:08 > 0:07:10Because his DS.

0:07:10 > 0:07:12Because my DS went.

0:07:12 > 0:07:15And that was your little games console that they stole.

0:07:15 > 0:07:18Yeah. All of the games except one.

0:07:18 > 0:07:21Other items that were gone, are they irreplaceable, then?

0:07:21 > 0:07:23Let's take your iPad,

0:07:23 > 0:07:25I imagine there's a lot of photos on there.

0:07:25 > 0:07:28Yeah. All the photos from last Christmas, really.

0:07:28 > 0:07:31We hadn't backed them up because it's not that long ago.

0:07:31 > 0:07:32For longer.

0:07:32 > 0:07:35The memories from that morning, which was brilliant, wasn't it?

0:07:35 > 0:07:38Because you were so happy when you got your present, weren't you?

0:07:38 > 0:07:40They've obviously gone now.

0:07:40 > 0:07:42And in addition there was something else that was stolen

0:07:42 > 0:07:44which is of massive sentimental value.

0:07:44 > 0:07:49My graduation ring. It was a white gold ring with some diamonds on it.

0:07:49 > 0:07:51I could get another ring but it's not...

0:07:51 > 0:07:53- It's not going to be the same, is it?- No.

0:07:53 > 0:07:56No, it's not. That's right, Charlie, it's not the same.

0:07:56 > 0:08:00I know that security was something that you were conscious of.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03We already knew we needed to get a gate and the alarm wasn't working.

0:08:03 > 0:08:07I suppose it was things like that we knew we had to do

0:08:07 > 0:08:08but we just kept putting it off.

0:08:08 > 0:08:12I really think that's something we might be able to help you with.

0:08:12 > 0:08:15- So, Charlie, shall we fix your place up, make it nice and safe?- Yes.

0:08:15 > 0:08:17Come on then, give me a big high five.

0:08:17 > 0:08:18Are you ready?

0:08:20 > 0:08:22Oh!

0:08:22 > 0:08:25Whilst the police pursue the burglars

0:08:25 > 0:08:27and try to get back the stolen items,

0:08:27 > 0:08:31I'm determined to sort out the weak security measures at the family's home.

0:08:31 > 0:08:35Also, I really want to restore their peace of mind by transforming

0:08:35 > 0:08:37their ransacked living room.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40So I'm returning to the police headquarters to assemble

0:08:40 > 0:08:44a group of willing volunteers to overhaul Dave and Dee's home.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46Charlotte, it's Rav. Hi, is that Chris?

0:08:46 > 0:08:49John, hi, it's Rav. Darren, it's Rav, how are you doing?

0:08:49 > 0:08:51Charlotte, I really need a favour.

0:08:51 > 0:08:53'OK.'

0:08:53 > 0:08:56We've just had a lovely couple that we've found have been burgled

0:08:56 > 0:08:58and it's really, really shaken them up.

0:08:58 > 0:09:00and one of their biggest weakness

0:09:00 > 0:09:02on the house that they've got, is the windows.

0:09:02 > 0:09:05'Your patio's going to be the weakest point of your property.'

0:09:05 > 0:09:08I think that's where you could come in and help us out.

0:09:08 > 0:09:10- 'Definitely, I'd love to.'- Brilliant.

0:09:10 > 0:09:13- 'Yeah, we'll be happy to help.'- Thank you so much for your help.

0:09:13 > 0:09:16I'll send you the details, and see you at the property.

0:09:16 > 0:09:22- 'I'll look forward to seeing you. Take care, Rav.'- And you. Bye-bye.

0:09:23 > 0:09:27My army of volunteers is really shaping up, and I know with

0:09:27 > 0:09:31their help we can definitely make a difference to Dave and Dee's lives.

0:09:31 > 0:09:35It's early afternoon, and back at their house I'm eager to keep up

0:09:35 > 0:09:38the momentum of the security transformation.

0:09:38 > 0:09:42It only takes an intruder minutes to burgle your house, but with the

0:09:42 > 0:09:47right security measures in place, you could stop them completely.

0:09:47 > 0:09:49So I need to get a full security assessment.

0:09:49 > 0:09:54'PC Paul Croft is here to give us his professional opinion.'

0:09:54 > 0:09:56Paul, thanks for coming down.

0:09:56 > 0:09:58Obviously this is the property that's just been burgled.

0:09:58 > 0:10:00What are you thinking?

0:10:00 > 0:10:02It's got an alarm. It looks fairly dated.

0:10:02 > 0:10:04It's not working.

0:10:04 > 0:10:05If you're looking at an alarm box

0:10:05 > 0:10:07and think it looks outdated and not working,

0:10:07 > 0:10:09a burglar could do the same.

0:10:09 > 0:10:11The offender will be doing exactly the same thing, yes.

0:10:11 > 0:10:13- So straightaway that needs to be looked at.- Yeah.

0:10:13 > 0:10:16Now we can see some lighting there which is a good sign.

0:10:16 > 0:10:18I'm not sure if it's actually working.

0:10:18 > 0:10:21If you've got it, you need to maintain it so that it's effective

0:10:21 > 0:10:24and does the job that it was designed and put up to do.

0:10:24 > 0:10:27We could just walk straight through to the back there so,

0:10:27 > 0:10:28what do you think about that?

0:10:28 > 0:10:31The majority of burglaries are round the back of the houses

0:10:31 > 0:10:33because people can't see there.

0:10:33 > 0:10:36And a gate on there with a padlock would be making it more difficult

0:10:36 > 0:10:39for the offenders to get round the back, and so limiting their options.

0:10:39 > 0:10:41- It's that deterrent we want to get across, isn't it?- It is.

0:10:41 > 0:10:43Deter them from going through

0:10:43 > 0:10:45- the back of someone else's home. - That's right, yes.

0:10:45 > 0:10:48Let's go and take a look now and see what's there.

0:10:48 > 0:10:50This is where they did eventually get in,

0:10:50 > 0:10:53they smashed through this patio door.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56Now this isn't the worst patio door you can get security-wise, is it?

0:10:56 > 0:10:57No, it's not.

0:10:57 > 0:10:59It's an aluminium door,

0:10:59 > 0:11:03they are generally better than the UPVC in terms of strength,

0:11:03 > 0:11:05and I think the fact they've put the glass through,

0:11:05 > 0:11:07is looking at desperation, really.

0:11:07 > 0:11:09OK, Paul.

0:11:09 > 0:11:13Well, lots of tips there, lots for us to be getting on with.

0:11:13 > 0:11:15Better get our skates on. Cheers, mate.

0:11:19 > 0:11:22My mission is to get this security fix sorted,

0:11:22 > 0:11:27and my band of willing volunteers is already on the case.

0:11:27 > 0:11:30I'm replacing the defunct lights and alarm,

0:11:30 > 0:11:33so the family can start to relax in their home again.

0:11:35 > 0:11:40Darren and his colleague are on the case.

0:11:42 > 0:11:45I'm also putting in a gate, as one of the biggest problems here

0:11:45 > 0:11:47is the easy access to the back garden.

0:11:51 > 0:11:54There's a ton of stuff for the guys to be getting on with,

0:11:54 > 0:11:57but it's not just about making the house secure.

0:11:57 > 0:12:01I want to make it feel like home, a place where Poppy and Charlie

0:12:01 > 0:12:03can feel safe and comfortable again.

0:12:03 > 0:12:06So I've called in designer Charlotte Brewer to help.

0:12:07 > 0:12:09Charlotte, thanks for coming up.

0:12:09 > 0:12:12This is the family room that Dave and Dee share with their children,

0:12:12 > 0:12:15and this is the one that was broken into by the burglars.

0:12:15 > 0:12:18They smashed that patio door, the glass was all over the kids' toys.

0:12:18 > 0:12:21They even stole one of Charlie's Christmas presents,

0:12:21 > 0:12:22and it was completely ransacked.

0:12:22 > 0:12:27So, we want to make this feel as calm and as nice

0:12:27 > 0:12:29as we possibly can after what happened,

0:12:29 > 0:12:30and that's where you come in.

0:12:30 > 0:12:33So, you've had a look around, what do you think you can do?

0:12:33 > 0:12:36I think understandably there's quite a few bits and pieces

0:12:36 > 0:12:40in this room that David and Dee want to keep, which is great.

0:12:40 > 0:12:44It's just a case of really kind of accessorising what we've already got

0:12:44 > 0:12:47and kind of making additions instead of making any major changes.

0:12:47 > 0:12:50The sofas, for example, we're going to have them cleaned,

0:12:50 > 0:12:53have new inners put in the cushions so they'll feel like new,

0:12:53 > 0:12:56and then bring in some more vivid colours on the cushions to try

0:12:56 > 0:13:00and brighten up the space and make it more comfortable for them again.

0:13:00 > 0:13:04The security upgrade at Dave and Dee's home is coming on a pace,

0:13:04 > 0:13:07and the police investigation is moving forward too.

0:13:07 > 0:13:10They're out in the community again, going house-to-house

0:13:10 > 0:13:14looking for leads and offering support.

0:13:14 > 0:13:18You've all got your areas. Is there any questions from anybody?

0:13:18 > 0:13:20Right, lovely. Right, we'll get cracking, then.

0:13:22 > 0:13:26We're here this morning to basically visit all the surrounding properties

0:13:26 > 0:13:29and reassure them, basically.

0:13:29 > 0:13:32We tend to find that a lot of neighbours

0:13:32 > 0:13:35tend not to communicate very much any more.

0:13:35 > 0:13:37It can be quite scary for them

0:13:37 > 0:13:41to find that one of the houses next to them might have been burgled.

0:13:41 > 0:13:45It just offers them reassurance and makes them

0:13:45 > 0:13:47think about their own security a little bit more.

0:13:49 > 0:13:51The thing is that they've got through the window

0:13:51 > 0:13:55so it's been smashed, so probably a bit of a noise has been made

0:13:55 > 0:13:57at that time, so I don't know if you've heard or seen anything?

0:13:57 > 0:14:00- Was it local? Whereabouts was it? - It's just opposite.

0:14:00 > 0:14:01- Really?- Yeah. Yeah.

0:14:01 > 0:14:03- Right.- On the main road, yeah.

0:14:03 > 0:14:04No, nothing.

0:14:05 > 0:14:08The police have finished their door-to-door investigations

0:14:08 > 0:14:13and, as rush hour begins, back at the house my team have finished

0:14:13 > 0:14:15installing the new alarm and lights.

0:14:15 > 0:14:20There's just one more thing to finish off before we call it a night.

0:14:21 > 0:14:23Sorted.

0:14:25 > 0:14:29The crime committed at Dave and Dee's house is still under investigation,

0:14:29 > 0:14:33and Chris Craven has potential leads to follow up.

0:14:33 > 0:14:36At this moment in time, the computers and the electrical items that have

0:14:36 > 0:14:40been stolen haven't come online, however this doesn't mean that say

0:14:40 > 0:14:43in three or four months time that they're not going to come online.

0:14:43 > 0:14:46Those enquiries will still keep going.

0:14:46 > 0:14:49And also we can't establish at this moment in time

0:14:49 > 0:14:53when someone take these stolen items of jewellery into a gold shop,

0:14:53 > 0:14:57because it's such an easily identifiable article,

0:14:57 > 0:15:00and it may be that in two or three months we'll receive a phone call

0:15:00 > 0:15:01from one of the gold shops

0:15:01 > 0:15:05to say that they have offered this ring for sale.

0:15:10 > 0:15:13It's a sunny Friday morning in West Yorkshire.

0:15:13 > 0:15:17Dave and Dee are getting ready to leave so we can really crack on

0:15:17 > 0:15:19with the transformation of their home.

0:15:19 > 0:15:22After everything that's happened, I think it's reassuring to know

0:15:22 > 0:15:25that things are going to be happening to the house

0:15:25 > 0:15:27that will make it more secure.

0:15:27 > 0:15:31And hopefully reduce the chances of anything happening again.

0:15:34 > 0:15:37My calls have really paid off.

0:15:37 > 0:15:39I've spread word of the break-in far and wide,

0:15:39 > 0:15:42and an army of good Samaritans are arriving

0:15:42 > 0:15:45to help get this family's life back on track.

0:15:48 > 0:15:50OK, folks, thanks for coming round at such short notice.

0:15:50 > 0:15:53This is Dee and Dave's home which they share

0:15:53 > 0:15:55with their two children, Charlie and Poppy.

0:15:55 > 0:15:57Some of you know them personally, many of you don't,

0:15:57 > 0:16:01but what they've had happen to them is that someone has smashed

0:16:01 > 0:16:05their way in through their patio door, completely obliterated their

0:16:05 > 0:16:11family room and have really, really upset them by ransacking their home.

0:16:11 > 0:16:15Now, for me the worst part is how it's affected the young children.

0:16:15 > 0:16:18I want to change that with your help, let's make it as safe

0:16:18 > 0:16:21and secure as we possibly can.

0:16:21 > 0:16:24So let's get in there and let's get this place fixed up.

0:16:24 > 0:16:25ALL: Yeah. Let's do it!

0:16:31 > 0:16:34To achieve my goal we need to fix the garage roof,

0:16:34 > 0:16:37install new windows, replace the smashed patio door,

0:16:37 > 0:16:42and turn the living room back into a comfortable family space.

0:16:42 > 0:16:46It's massively important that we banish the bad memories

0:16:46 > 0:16:49of the burglary, so they can feel safe in their home again.

0:16:50 > 0:16:53These timber windows, have not got very good locking systems on them

0:16:53 > 0:16:55so we're going to increase the security of them,

0:16:55 > 0:16:57fit doubled glazed units with a six point locking system,

0:16:57 > 0:17:00to ensure that this doesn't happen again.

0:17:00 > 0:17:03And we're also going to be replacing the patio with a French door

0:17:03 > 0:17:06combination with a ten point locking mechanism, with also security film

0:17:06 > 0:17:08as well, to stop them from punching through the glass.

0:17:08 > 0:17:11So it's going to be a lot more warmer and a lot more secure.

0:17:17 > 0:17:22There's real motivation amongst the community to help Dave and Dee,

0:17:22 > 0:17:26especially as other people know exactly what they are going through.

0:17:26 > 0:17:28When my young one were about three months old,

0:17:28 > 0:17:32me and my girlfriend got broke into and it were a bit, you know,

0:17:32 > 0:17:34a bit heartbreaking, a bit emotional.

0:17:34 > 0:17:37We were asleep upstairs and I got up the next morning for work

0:17:37 > 0:17:39and the house had been turned over.

0:17:39 > 0:17:42I know what it's like, it's horrible.

0:17:47 > 0:17:49The security measures are really taking shape,

0:17:49 > 0:17:53so too are Charlotte's plans for the family room.

0:17:53 > 0:17:56So, Charlotte, you won't mind me saying there's still an awful

0:17:56 > 0:17:58lot of work that still needs to be done here, and it must be difficult

0:17:58 > 0:18:01for you working with all the guys doing this as well at the same time.

0:18:01 > 0:18:03You've kind of got to work around each other.

0:18:03 > 0:18:06Yeah. They're doing a great job putting the doors in.

0:18:06 > 0:18:09When they're done, we'll start moving the furniture back into place.

0:18:09 > 0:18:11We've got some pictures going up, cushions on the sofas,

0:18:11 > 0:18:13a nice big rug, that's also coming in.

0:18:13 > 0:18:16- The sofas look great, by the way. - They're going to look brilliant.

0:18:16 > 0:18:18They love this sofa, but they wanted it plumped up.

0:18:18 > 0:18:20Yes, we've had it cleaned, had it plumped up

0:18:20 > 0:18:22so it should be like new for them.

0:18:22 > 0:18:24And the addition of the cushions

0:18:24 > 0:18:26to bring the whole colour scheme together.

0:18:28 > 0:18:33MACHINE GRINDS

0:18:35 > 0:18:38It's coming to the end of a long and productive day

0:18:38 > 0:18:40at Dave and Dee's house.

0:18:40 > 0:18:43Whilst we've been working hard, the police have also been doing

0:18:43 > 0:18:45all they can to capture the criminals.

0:18:45 > 0:18:48Unfortunately, the investigation has come to a dead end,

0:18:48 > 0:18:51but the hunt is never over for the police.

0:18:51 > 0:18:52Dave and Dee's burglary

0:18:52 > 0:18:54unfortunately wasn't unique in that area.

0:18:54 > 0:18:57They've broken into garage first and removed the roof from it,

0:18:57 > 0:18:59and we've had a number of offences

0:18:59 > 0:19:01that have occurred in exactly the same way.

0:19:01 > 0:19:03Those offences have forensic potential

0:19:03 > 0:19:06and they have witnesses which are leading us to suspects.

0:19:06 > 0:19:09So what we'll do then is go back and revisit Dave and Dee's burglary,

0:19:09 > 0:19:12look at that in line with the suspects we've got.

0:19:12 > 0:19:14There may be other evidence that comes to light, whether it be

0:19:14 > 0:19:17the electrical items or the jewellery that's been taken,

0:19:17 > 0:19:18we'll continue to bear that in mind

0:19:18 > 0:19:20while we're searching suspects' addresses.

0:19:30 > 0:19:32It's bright and early on our final day,

0:19:32 > 0:19:37and my selfless team of volunteers are working flat out, making sure

0:19:37 > 0:19:40everything is perfect for Dave and Dee's return.

0:19:46 > 0:19:49John, the glazier, and Darren, the alarm fitter,

0:19:49 > 0:19:53have joined forces to come up with an ingenious idea.

0:19:53 > 0:19:55It's a tiny gadget which will hugely improve

0:19:55 > 0:19:58the security on the patio doors

0:19:58 > 0:20:00So, Darren, your alarm system's almost complete now,

0:20:00 > 0:20:02tell me what you've done here with the patio doors.

0:20:02 > 0:20:05We've worked with John, who put the patio doors in,

0:20:05 > 0:20:07and we've managed to get the cable all the way up the frame,

0:20:07 > 0:20:10so we've got the vibration sensor here which is a nice neat finish.

0:20:10 > 0:20:12You say the vibration sensor,

0:20:12 > 0:20:15now that doesn't actually need the glass to smash, does it?

0:20:15 > 0:20:18If an intruder was to come up and give this door a whack,

0:20:18 > 0:20:20that is enough to set the alarm off.

0:20:20 > 0:20:23Yeah. Any sort of attempted break-in on this is going to trip that

0:20:23 > 0:20:25vibration sensor and it's going to go straight off.

0:20:25 > 0:20:27- OK. Now you've armed this now. The alarm is on.- It is.

0:20:27 > 0:20:30I'm just going to test it to make sure that this does actually work.

0:20:30 > 0:20:33- So if I give this a whack it should set the alarm off?- Go for it.

0:20:33 > 0:20:35ALARM GOES OFF

0:20:35 > 0:20:37Fantastic. You'd better turn it off now!

0:20:46 > 0:20:49The work on Dave and Dee's home is almost complete.

0:20:49 > 0:20:52Their friends know all too well how much the team's efforts will

0:20:52 > 0:20:57help them move on, so they've come round to add their support.

0:20:57 > 0:21:00- Charlotte, I've got here Oliver and Luke.- Hiya.

0:21:00 > 0:21:01They're going to help you out.

0:21:01 > 0:21:04Now, guys, Charlotte here is helping make Charlie

0:21:04 > 0:21:07and Poppy's house nice, and she needs some help with the flowers.

0:21:07 > 0:21:08So are you going to give her a hand?

0:21:08 > 0:21:11We've got the parents here. Gemma, these are your boys.

0:21:11 > 0:21:13And Mikey and Laura, come over a moment.

0:21:13 > 0:21:16- You guys all know Dee and Dave. - Yeah.

0:21:16 > 0:21:19So between you, you all know how much it's affected them.

0:21:19 > 0:21:21We had Charlie the night that it happened.

0:21:21 > 0:21:24He was upset, he was definitely a lot quieter than normal,

0:21:24 > 0:21:26a lot quieter.

0:21:26 > 0:21:28- Which is completely understandable, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:21:28 > 0:21:30When something horrendous like this happens.

0:21:30 > 0:21:33It's helped knowing that you've come round to give them

0:21:33 > 0:21:34a hand with the house,

0:21:34 > 0:21:36and that they're going to be more secure.

0:21:36 > 0:21:39- They're pretty strong people, aren't they, really?- Yeah.

0:21:39 > 0:21:42And I think the excitement of having this is good for them.

0:21:42 > 0:21:45It's nice to know that they've got friends and,

0:21:45 > 0:21:47even little ones that are willing to give them a hand.

0:21:47 > 0:21:50- Definitely. - And sort it out again.

0:21:56 > 0:21:59Dave and Dee's home has been transformed,

0:21:59 > 0:22:02but before we reveal it to them I want to find out

0:22:02 > 0:22:05what our Crime Reduction Specialist, PC Paul Croft,

0:22:05 > 0:22:07thinks of the new security measures.

0:22:14 > 0:22:16We've replaced Dave and Dee's alarm

0:22:16 > 0:22:21and lights, adding dusk till dawn sensors all around the property.

0:22:21 > 0:22:25We've also put a brand new gate in, and installed a high quality

0:22:25 > 0:22:29patio door with a state of the art vibration sensor.

0:22:29 > 0:22:31But how does Paul rate it?

0:22:33 > 0:22:36Do you think after your original assessment of the property,

0:22:36 > 0:22:38this is now safer and more secure than it was?

0:22:38 > 0:22:41A lot more safe, yeah. It's been a really good job has this one,

0:22:41 > 0:22:44and it's made the house a lot more secure.

0:22:44 > 0:22:45That's what we want. Brilliant, thank you.

0:22:45 > 0:22:51- I'm sure the family will be very happy to hear that. - I'm sure they will.

0:22:54 > 0:22:57Dave and Dee's family life was left in turmoil

0:22:57 > 0:23:01when an intruder broke into their home, ransacking it

0:23:01 > 0:23:03and making it feel a scary and frightening place

0:23:03 > 0:23:06for their two young children, Charlie and Poppy.

0:23:09 > 0:23:12While the police have been on the trail of the burglars,

0:23:12 > 0:23:16my army of volunteers have turned this home into a safe haven

0:23:16 > 0:23:20once again, where the family can be at ease.

0:23:21 > 0:23:25But what will Dave and Dee make of their revamped home?

0:23:25 > 0:23:27They're back to take a look.

0:23:27 > 0:23:30Let's show you what we've done on the front of your property.

0:23:30 > 0:23:32First of all you can see a new burglar alarm box.

0:23:32 > 0:23:35- We've put an intruder alarm in, so peace of mind for you there. - Brilliant.

0:23:35 > 0:23:38Also you can notice there's a light on the front, just in the porch.

0:23:38 > 0:23:39Yeah, yeah.

0:23:39 > 0:23:42That's what they refer to as a dusk till dawn type light.

0:23:42 > 0:23:45So every time it goes dark, that's automatically going to go on

0:23:45 > 0:23:48and just illuminate this area nice and gently, and also there's

0:23:48 > 0:23:52another light on the side of the property, exactly the same.

0:23:52 > 0:23:55And you can also see just down the side - a brand new gate.

0:23:55 > 0:23:56That's brilliant.

0:23:56 > 0:23:58Some improvements there straightaway.

0:23:58 > 0:24:03- Let's go round the back because I want to show you some more. - OK.- Excellent.

0:24:03 > 0:24:05OK, guys, obviously

0:24:05 > 0:24:07if you look above there, you've got a new light as well.

0:24:07 > 0:24:08Brilliant.

0:24:08 > 0:24:11And that's again dusk till dawn style.

0:24:11 > 0:24:14Now if you just shuffle over here.

0:24:14 > 0:24:15Wow!

0:24:15 > 0:24:19- Brand new patio doors.- Look at that! Fantastic.

0:24:19 > 0:24:21- OK? Now those doors... - They look amazing.

0:24:21 > 0:24:25..are as safe as we can possibly get. They're laminated glass.

0:24:25 > 0:24:27If anything was ever to be smashed against the glass,

0:24:27 > 0:24:30it's not going to shatter like before.

0:24:30 > 0:24:32And all that glass going over your board games

0:24:32 > 0:24:34and all over your living room. None of that any more.

0:24:34 > 0:24:37And they're linked up to a vibration sensor, so even

0:24:37 > 0:24:42a big whack on the door when the alarm's set is enough to set it off.

0:24:42 > 0:24:45- Brilliant.- They look amazing.

0:24:45 > 0:24:46Good. I thought you'd like those.

0:24:46 > 0:24:48Thank you very much.

0:24:48 > 0:24:50You can see actually the curtains are drawn,

0:24:50 > 0:24:53- so you're probably wondering what's the other side of the curtains. - Yeah.

0:24:53 > 0:24:55Well, as a little extra,

0:24:55 > 0:24:57we wanted to give you your family room back again.

0:24:57 > 0:25:01- We've done a bit of work inside that I want to show you.- Wow!

0:25:01 > 0:25:03- Do you want to take a look? - Yes, please.

0:25:03 > 0:25:06- Let's go in and have a look. - Definitely!

0:25:08 > 0:25:11So if you come in.

0:25:11 > 0:25:15And this is just a little extra that we wanted to do for you,

0:25:15 > 0:25:18so it feels like you've got your family space back again.

0:25:18 > 0:25:22- Wow!- Fantastic! That's amazing.

0:25:22 > 0:25:25- And all your pictures up there. - Look at that!

0:25:25 > 0:25:28Now, Dave, you won't mind me saying this I'm sure,

0:25:28 > 0:25:31- but you were very fond of this sofa. - Yeah.

0:25:31 > 0:25:34Now what we've done is actually steam-cleaned the sofa

0:25:34 > 0:25:36and filled it again, so it's had a brand new filling

0:25:36 > 0:25:39so it's nice and plump, so you can laze around in that, I'm sure.

0:25:39 > 0:25:41And have lots of fun there.

0:25:41 > 0:25:43- Thank you very much.- Lovely.

0:25:43 > 0:25:45And lots of storage for you, lots of colour

0:25:45 > 0:25:46and a little area in the corner.

0:25:46 > 0:25:51- I love the rug, that's brilliant, and the pictures.- That's brilliant.

0:25:51 > 0:25:53But what we wanted to do was just try and give you that feeling

0:25:53 > 0:25:55that this is your space again,

0:25:55 > 0:25:58and then we'd try and get rid of the memories of what happened in here.

0:25:58 > 0:26:00- Yeah.- Thank you very much. It's great.- Yeah.

0:26:00 > 0:26:03Do you think Charlie and Poppy will like it, though?

0:26:03 > 0:26:05I think they will, yeah. I think they will.

0:26:05 > 0:26:07I think they'll like that area there,

0:26:07 > 0:26:11- where they can do their own little drawing and bits and pieces. - They will do, yeah.

0:26:11 > 0:26:13Good boy, Charlie. Are you going to come in?

0:26:13 > 0:26:16Charlie, look at what we've done to your living room.

0:26:16 > 0:26:18Cool!

0:26:18 > 0:26:20Do you like it?

0:26:20 > 0:26:21You've moved the chair.

0:26:21 > 0:26:23THEY LAUGH

0:26:23 > 0:26:25- Look what you've got in the corner. - It's a table.

0:26:25 > 0:26:28- Go and have a look, Charlie? - Do you want to go across?

0:26:28 > 0:26:30Go and have a look, that's for you.

0:26:30 > 0:26:32Go on, Poppy, are you going to have a look too?

0:26:32 > 0:26:34You can go and sit down, that's for you

0:26:34 > 0:26:35I want to go outside.

0:26:35 > 0:26:37THEY LAUGH

0:26:37 > 0:26:39What about the doors? Do you like the new doors?

0:26:39 > 0:26:40Yes.

0:26:40 > 0:26:42I think we're getting a thumbs up from them two.

0:26:42 > 0:26:44- I think so. - Do you like it, then?

0:26:44 > 0:26:45BOTH: Yeah.

0:26:45 > 0:26:47- Does it look better?- Yeah.

0:26:47 > 0:26:49There's obviously a lot of people that made this happen,

0:26:49 > 0:26:52there was a massive team effort.

0:26:52 > 0:26:54They're all local tradesmen and women,

0:26:54 > 0:26:56they heard your story and they just wanted to help.

0:26:56 > 0:26:59And they're outside.

0:26:59 > 0:27:01So would you like to say a quick hello?

0:27:01 > 0:27:03Yeah, definitely. And a thank you as well.

0:27:03 > 0:27:05And a big thank you.
