0:00:30 > 0:00:32escape justice.

0:00:57 > 0:01:01it's double trouble for these officers as they go searching for

0:01:01 > 0:01:04two wanted men in one small Yorkshire town.

0:01:06 > 0:01:07We're going to go

0:01:07 > 0:01:10200 metres up the road and do the other one.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13But finding the fugitives won't be easy.

0:01:14 > 0:01:17Am I going to be OK to walk past that dog and go upstairs?

0:01:17 > 0:01:21In London, a helpful suspect introduces detectives to technology

0:01:21 > 0:01:23to overcome their language barrier.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26COMPUTERISED VOICE SPEAKS INDISTINCTLY

0:01:26 > 0:01:27I love this thing!

0:01:27 > 0:01:31It is going to revolutionise extradition police work, this.

0:01:31 > 0:01:35- It's fantastic. - And let down by a false passport,

0:01:35 > 0:01:38the drug dealer on the run for over a decade,

0:01:38 > 0:01:41captured by chance in Amsterdam.

0:01:41 > 0:01:45We said, "We are in contact with the police of Liverpool," and then he

0:01:45 > 0:01:47said, "Oh, no.

0:01:47 > 0:01:48"You got me."

0:01:53 > 0:01:57When it comes to tracking down men and women fleeing from justice in

0:01:57 > 0:02:02other countries, West Yorkshire Police is one of the busiest forces

0:02:02 > 0:02:03in the business.

0:02:04 > 0:02:09Today, police officers Dave Lockwood and Tom Allen are out,

0:02:09 > 0:02:13hunting down not one, but two foreign fugitives.

0:02:13 > 0:02:15It would be nice if we got him.

0:02:16 > 0:02:20The two wanted men live quite literally around the corner from

0:02:20 > 0:02:21one another.

0:02:22 > 0:02:26The first target is a Polish man called Roman Horbik,

0:02:26 > 0:02:28wanted for crimes committed a long time ago.

0:02:30 > 0:02:34So, just to summarise, Tom, two offences, first one is fraud,

0:02:34 > 0:02:36where he has done them 12 withdrawals...

0:02:36 > 0:02:37- Oh, right.- ..of cash from the bank,

0:02:37 > 0:02:40and then the second one is hiding the stolen car.

0:02:42 > 0:02:46Dave thinks the wanted man has probably forgotten all about it.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49If you committed an offence and someone came tapping at your door

0:02:49 > 0:02:5115 years later, you'd be surprised as well.

0:02:51 > 0:02:53- 15 years?- Yeah.

0:02:53 > 0:02:57They arrive at the address and see a car parked outside.

0:02:58 > 0:03:00Dave runs a check on the number plate.

0:03:01 > 0:03:03- His car.- His car.

0:03:03 > 0:03:05- It is a match.- See if he's in.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15They go up to the door to check who's home.

0:03:15 > 0:03:16One thing is certain...

0:03:16 > 0:03:18DOG BARKS

0:03:19 > 0:03:21..there's a dog inside.

0:03:21 > 0:03:23A very large dog.

0:03:24 > 0:03:26Telly's on, Dave.

0:03:30 > 0:03:32Woof.

0:03:35 > 0:03:36Hiya, love.

0:03:36 > 0:03:38- Hello.- Hi.- Are you OK?

0:03:38 > 0:03:40- Yeah.- How many people is in the house?

0:03:40 > 0:03:43- Now, three.- Who is in the house?

0:03:43 > 0:03:45My baby...

0:03:45 > 0:03:46Just children, no adults in your house?

0:03:46 > 0:03:49No. No, I'm no good speaking English,

0:03:49 > 0:03:52- but...- It sounds really good to me.

0:03:52 > 0:03:55Does anybody else live here that is not here now?

0:03:55 > 0:03:58Erm... Yes, my husband only, but he work now.

0:03:58 > 0:04:00He's at work. And what is he called?

0:04:00 > 0:04:02- Roman Horbik.- Roman. OK.

0:04:02 > 0:04:07The woman confirms that the man they are after is her husband.

0:04:07 > 0:04:11She says he is not here, but Dave is not convinced.

0:04:11 > 0:04:13He wants to see for himself.

0:04:13 > 0:04:15DOG BARKS

0:04:15 > 0:04:17Just let him calm...

0:04:17 > 0:04:20Am I going to be OK to walk past that dog and go upstairs?

0:04:20 > 0:04:23But first, he'll have to get past the dog.

0:04:23 > 0:04:25Just you hold the dog there.

0:04:25 > 0:04:28- OK?- The German Shepherd isn't too pleased to see police officers

0:04:28 > 0:04:32- in the house. - You been bitten yet, Dave?

0:04:32 > 0:04:34No, but it is... It's a vicious dog.

0:04:34 > 0:04:36Just checking upstairs, mate,

0:04:36 > 0:04:38and then we'll get her to ring him if he's not here.

0:04:38 > 0:04:41Once he gets past the barking dog,

0:04:41 > 0:04:44Dave checks upstairs for the man they are looking for.

0:04:44 > 0:04:47What I'm doing, love, I'm just making sure there's no-one here,

0:04:47 > 0:04:49then I'll talk to you and explain what we are doing, OK?

0:04:49 > 0:04:52OK, you can watch me go around, there's no problems with that.

0:04:54 > 0:04:56There's no sign of him.

0:04:57 > 0:05:01Dave finds out the man works as a builder and is due back home

0:05:01 > 0:05:04- in a couple of hours. - I don't know, maybe two hours.

0:05:04 > 0:05:06- Two hours' time?- Yeah.

0:05:06 > 0:05:08OK, shall we come downstairs, back outside or into the kitchen?

0:05:08 > 0:05:11- Yeah.- Do you want to hold that dog of yours?

0:05:11 > 0:05:13DOG BARKS

0:05:19 > 0:05:20- Tom.- Hello.

0:05:20 > 0:05:22You can come round, it's clear.

0:05:22 > 0:05:23HE TALKS TO DOG

0:05:23 > 0:05:26Yeah, you can come and meet the dog if you want.

0:05:26 > 0:05:28The woman can't reach her husband.

0:05:28 > 0:05:32So Dave makes arrangements to come back later, when he is home.

0:05:32 > 0:05:34All right, I'll leave you my details.

0:05:34 > 0:05:36I've got my phone on me, so when Roman gets home,

0:05:36 > 0:05:38just give us a text, OK?

0:05:38 > 0:05:40I'll see you between half-seven and eight o'clock.

0:05:40 > 0:05:42Here. All right?

0:05:42 > 0:05:43All right, take care.

0:05:45 > 0:05:50But how will the fugitive, who has evaded justice for 15 years, react

0:05:50 > 0:05:53once he finds out the police are looking for him?

0:05:54 > 0:05:57This is where I struggle to always see the worst in people and presume

0:05:57 > 0:06:00they're not going to cooperate, but they've got kids here and one of

0:06:00 > 0:06:03the kids is poorly, so whether he is going to do owt silly and

0:06:03 > 0:06:05panic and run or come home for his tea,

0:06:05 > 0:06:08I guess we'll find out in two or three hours' time, won't we?

0:06:09 > 0:06:13But at least Dave and Tom haven't far to go for the next job.

0:06:13 > 0:06:18It seems that the small town of Batley is also home to another man

0:06:18 > 0:06:20on the run. This time from Hungary.

0:06:21 > 0:06:23We're going to go

0:06:23 > 0:06:25200 metres up the road and do the other one.

0:06:27 > 0:06:31Though, when they get there, it's not the warmest of receptions.

0:06:31 > 0:06:33- Hello.- Hello.

0:06:33 > 0:06:35- What is your name, please?- Hmm?

0:06:35 > 0:06:36What is your name?

0:06:42 > 0:06:44Back in 2003,

0:06:44 > 0:06:48police in Aberdeen were battling a growing problem.

0:06:48 > 0:06:52Suppliers from Liverpool were trafficking large quantities of

0:06:52 > 0:06:53hard drugs into the city.

0:06:54 > 0:06:57They're involved in sourcing kilo quantities of heroin

0:06:57 > 0:07:01from Liverpool, we know that they were spending tens of thousands of

0:07:01 > 0:07:04pounds on heroin and making significantly more than that selling

0:07:04 > 0:07:05it in Aberdeen.

0:07:06 > 0:07:10Detectives learned that a courier from Liverpool was about to deliver

0:07:10 > 0:07:12heroin to the area.

0:07:14 > 0:07:16If they could spot him,

0:07:16 > 0:07:19they knew he would lead them to the local dealers.

0:07:20 > 0:07:23This is where we had intelligence that our subjects were going to be

0:07:23 > 0:07:28meeting with a drug courier and collecting controlled drugs,

0:07:28 > 0:07:31so we put a surveillance team in this area.

0:07:33 > 0:07:37Then one of the undercover team hoping to spot the drugs handover

0:07:37 > 0:07:40was approached by a stranger.

0:07:40 > 0:07:41At about 9:30 that morning,

0:07:41 > 0:07:45a male approached that surveillance officer and asked him if he was

0:07:45 > 0:07:47there to pick something up.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50So, obviously that focused our attention on him.

0:07:50 > 0:07:51He spoke with a Liverpool accent,

0:07:51 > 0:07:55and we thought that might be one of the people we were interested in.

0:07:55 > 0:07:59The unlucky courier who had identified himself to the undercover

0:07:59 > 0:08:01cop was Scott Coleman.

0:08:03 > 0:08:05The officer kept watching.

0:08:07 > 0:08:09Within minutes, Coleman was meeting

0:08:09 > 0:08:12a local dealer already on their radar.

0:08:14 > 0:08:17Another officer saw him getting into the passenger seat of a white

0:08:17 > 0:08:19Vauxhall Cavalier,

0:08:19 > 0:08:23which was known to us and had featured in our operation prior to that.

0:08:23 > 0:08:26The driver of that car drove Coleman to here,

0:08:26 > 0:08:29where Coleman jumped out of the car and headed back towards the

0:08:29 > 0:08:33guesthouse. Pretty innocuous for a member of the public, but to us,

0:08:33 > 0:08:35we thought that a drugs handover had occurred,

0:08:35 > 0:08:37just with intelligence and what we had seen.

0:08:39 > 0:08:42Scott Coleman may only have been a courier,

0:08:42 > 0:08:45but he had blown the whole drug dealing operation wide open.

0:08:47 > 0:08:50He was arrested in a pub near Aberdeen station.

0:08:52 > 0:08:54He was totally upfront with the police when he was stopped,

0:08:54 > 0:08:56quite unusually, and immediately said that he had more gear

0:08:56 > 0:08:58in his rucksack.

0:08:59 > 0:09:03Police found another kilo of heroin when they searched Coleman.

0:09:03 > 0:09:05It had been meant for another dealer.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32Unusually, Coleman was quite honest in his answers.

0:09:32 > 0:09:37He said that he had been offered £1,500 to take what he thought was

0:09:37 > 0:09:40either cocaine or heroin from Liverpool to Aberdeen,

0:09:40 > 0:09:41and deliver to two different people.

0:09:44 > 0:09:46Coleman was charged with drugs offences,

0:09:46 > 0:09:51but was granted bail and subsequently disappeared.

0:09:51 > 0:09:55For two years, there was no sign of him, until he offended again,

0:09:55 > 0:09:57this time in Spain.

0:09:58 > 0:10:02He had obviously gone from being a drug courier to having a more senior

0:10:02 > 0:10:06position and was actually involved in the arrangement of importation,

0:10:06 > 0:10:08so he was obviously still offending,

0:10:08 > 0:10:09and offending at a higher level.

0:10:12 > 0:10:15But Coleman wasn't going to give up on his life as an international

0:10:15 > 0:10:21drugs dealer. Amazingly, the Spanish authorities also granted him bail.

0:10:21 > 0:10:24Lo and behold, he disappeared once more.

0:10:24 > 0:10:28For the next decade, he would be a fugitive,

0:10:28 > 0:10:30on the run and hiding from justice.

0:10:38 > 0:10:40In London, the extradition unit

0:10:40 > 0:10:44is an elite squad of Metropolitan Police detectives.

0:10:44 > 0:10:46Police. Can you open the door, please?

0:10:47 > 0:10:49They work round the clock,

0:10:49 > 0:10:53tracking down foreign criminals hiding here in the UK.

0:10:57 > 0:11:02It's 5:30am and Detective Sergeant Pete Rance is out on the streets

0:11:02 > 0:11:05of east London, hunting for a fugitive.

0:11:07 > 0:11:12This morning we're looking at trying to arrest a fellow who is wanted in

0:11:12 > 0:11:18Moldova for a fraud committed in 2010.

0:11:18 > 0:11:22The man he's searching for is accused of giving false details

0:11:22 > 0:11:24while applying for a loan.

0:11:27 > 0:11:30If police find the man they are after,

0:11:30 > 0:11:34he faces being sent back to Moldova to stand trial.

0:11:35 > 0:11:37Police. Can you open the door?

0:11:40 > 0:11:43Pete has found the address linked to the man,

0:11:43 > 0:11:44and it looks like he is home.

0:11:47 > 0:11:51There is a warrant that has been issued for your arrest in Moldova.

0:11:51 > 0:11:52OK?

0:11:54 > 0:11:55In Moldova.

0:11:55 > 0:11:59There is a warrant for your arrest in London,

0:11:59 > 0:12:01you are wanted for fraud in Moldova.

0:12:01 > 0:12:03Do you understand?

0:12:03 > 0:12:07The vast majority of them, English isn't their first language,

0:12:07 > 0:12:11so it is a real ongoing issue for us.

0:12:12 > 0:12:14And we are dependent, in the main,

0:12:14 > 0:12:18on them being able to speak English to us,

0:12:18 > 0:12:20rather than us being able to speak with them in their language.

0:12:23 > 0:12:26The man they've arrested only speaks Romanian,

0:12:26 > 0:12:29and his wife is acting as a translator.

0:12:29 > 0:12:32Could you tell him, so he understands what's happening?

0:12:35 > 0:12:38SHE SPEAKS ROMANIAN

0:12:38 > 0:12:41He will know what is happening this afternoon.

0:12:41 > 0:12:47He'll know if he can come home here or if he has to stay in prison.

0:12:48 > 0:12:50But he will only be able to come home here,

0:12:50 > 0:12:53he must give up his passport and his identity card,

0:12:53 > 0:12:56otherwise the judge will not give him bail.

0:12:56 > 0:12:58Any passport he has, he has to give to me, OK?

0:12:58 > 0:13:00Otherwise... He has to give it to me.

0:13:00 > 0:13:03Does he have an ID card as well?

0:13:03 > 0:13:04This one, yeah.

0:13:05 > 0:13:07OK. Are we ready? Let's go.

0:13:09 > 0:13:13Pete will now transport the man to a custody suite in central London,

0:13:13 > 0:13:16but explaining that to him is difficult,

0:13:16 > 0:13:20as there is no-one to translate during the journey.

0:13:20 > 0:13:23I've had many, many cases where

0:13:23 > 0:13:27you are unable to communicate, you end up arresting someone,

0:13:27 > 0:13:29you are not sure they understand,

0:13:29 > 0:13:32apart from being able to issue them with a copy of the warrant in their

0:13:32 > 0:13:34own language.

0:13:35 > 0:13:39This arrest has been a journey of discovery for Pete.

0:13:39 > 0:13:43On the way here, the man he is bringing into custody has shown Pete

0:13:43 > 0:13:46how to use a translation app on his phone.

0:13:47 > 0:13:48How do you get it to...?

0:13:51 > 0:13:53We might have to wait a little while.

0:13:53 > 0:13:57ELECTRONIC VOICE TRANSLATES

0:13:57 > 0:14:00- No problem.- OK.

0:14:00 > 0:14:02It's great. I love this thing!

0:14:03 > 0:14:08It is going to revolutionise extradition police work, this.

0:14:08 > 0:14:09It's fantastic.

0:14:11 > 0:14:13Thank you.

0:14:13 > 0:14:16It was very, very useful. I had never seen it before, so I'm not...

0:14:16 > 0:14:19I'm a bit of a technophobe, unfortunately, but he was...

0:14:19 > 0:14:23We were able to have quite an in-depth conversation using this app.

0:14:25 > 0:14:29This smartphone app can translate between more than 50 languages.

0:14:29 > 0:14:32And it is making the process of checking into custody much

0:14:32 > 0:14:33less stressful than usual.

0:14:36 > 0:14:39ELECTRONIC VOICE TRANSLATES

0:14:46 > 0:14:51All the legal documents are still provided in the arrested man's own language,

0:14:51 > 0:14:55and he will also have access to the official language line translator,

0:14:55 > 0:15:00but technology has definitely made conversation much easier.

0:15:00 > 0:15:01We'll do the fingerprints.

0:15:01 > 0:15:05I'll get a DNA bag and get you to swipe that.

0:15:05 > 0:15:06It's a wonderful thing.

0:15:08 > 0:15:09He has enlightened me this morning.

0:15:09 > 0:15:11He used it to ask me some questions,

0:15:11 > 0:15:14because he was concerned about the fact that he had been arrested,

0:15:14 > 0:15:16concerned about what was going to happen to him,

0:15:16 > 0:15:19so we've been able to reassure him in the car that the judge will

0:15:19 > 0:15:23consider the request and he can make his representations through his

0:15:23 > 0:15:25lawyer when he gets to court.

0:15:25 > 0:15:29But all of those things we've been able to articulate and speak with

0:15:29 > 0:15:30him about through the...

0:15:31 > 0:15:35through the translating app that he had on his phone,

0:15:35 > 0:15:37so it may be that we've...

0:15:37 > 0:15:39we've hit on something today.

0:15:46 > 0:15:47In West Yorkshire,

0:15:47 > 0:15:51police officers Dave Lockwood and Tom Allen had been trying to track

0:15:51 > 0:15:55down two fugitives living a stone's throw from one another.

0:15:56 > 0:15:58We are going to go

0:15:58 > 0:16:00200 metres up the road and do the other one.

0:16:01 > 0:16:04The first man they're after is wanted for offences he committed

0:16:04 > 0:16:07in Poland 15 years ago.

0:16:08 > 0:16:12At the man's house, they find his car, his wife

0:16:12 > 0:16:14and his dog,

0:16:14 > 0:16:16but the man himself is out at work.

0:16:16 > 0:16:19They are hoping he will return in a few hours.

0:16:19 > 0:16:22Whether he's going to do owt silly and panic and run or come home for

0:16:22 > 0:16:25his tea, I guess we'll find out in two or three hours' time, won't we?

0:16:26 > 0:16:30Meanwhile, they make the very short journey to the home of the other

0:16:30 > 0:16:31criminal they are looking for.

0:16:34 > 0:16:36This man is Hungarian,

0:16:36 > 0:16:39and back home he has been convicted of a series of burglaries carried

0:16:39 > 0:16:42out between 2010 and 2012.

0:16:45 > 0:16:48At the house, Dave covers the back exit while Tom knocks on

0:16:48 > 0:16:50the front door.

0:16:50 > 0:16:51DOG BARKS

0:16:51 > 0:16:53Another dog for you, Dave.

0:16:53 > 0:16:54You can deal with this one.

0:16:54 > 0:16:56Sounds soft compared to mine.

0:16:56 > 0:17:01The door is answered, but this resident doesn't have much to say.

0:17:01 > 0:17:02- What is your name, please?- Hmm?

0:17:02 > 0:17:05What is your name? Dave, we've got a houseful here.

0:17:05 > 0:17:07Do you know anybody called Tibor?

0:17:07 > 0:17:10- Tibor?- Yeah.- Tibor?- No.

0:17:10 > 0:17:12No. Right.

0:17:12 > 0:17:15Is it all right if I just come in and speak to you, yeah?

0:17:15 > 0:17:17We are making some enquiries.

0:17:17 > 0:17:21Tom and Dave make their way inside to find out more.

0:17:21 > 0:17:23Do you know anybody by that name?

0:17:23 > 0:17:25Don't know.

0:17:25 > 0:17:27Could you ask your mum if she knows him?

0:17:27 > 0:17:30THEY SPEAK OWN LANGUAGE

0:17:33 > 0:17:36- Hello.- Hello. - What is your name, please?

0:17:36 > 0:17:38My name is David Paksy.

0:17:38 > 0:17:39- David?- Yes.

0:17:39 > 0:17:40Right. Is that you?

0:17:40 > 0:17:43The man at the kitchen table looks familiar.

0:17:43 > 0:17:46Dave. It is this lad in the kitchen here.

0:17:46 > 0:17:47It's him.

0:17:47 > 0:17:49Tibor Paksy. They've got their man.

0:17:49 > 0:17:51So you are under arrest.

0:17:51 > 0:17:55- Why?- Because, in Hungary, you are suspected of committing burglary,

0:17:55 > 0:17:57all right? You don't have to say anything,

0:17:57 > 0:18:00but anything you do say may be given in evidence. Do you understand?

0:18:00 > 0:18:04As Dave and Tom explain to the fugitive that he has ten months left

0:18:04 > 0:18:07to serve in a Hungarian prison,

0:18:07 > 0:18:12the family begins to understand the seriousness of the situation.

0:18:12 > 0:18:13SHE SOBS

0:18:20 > 0:18:25Dave and Tom don't waste any time getting this man into custody.

0:18:27 > 0:18:30And then, on their way back to the police station,

0:18:30 > 0:18:33Dave gets an unexpected phone call.

0:18:34 > 0:18:37It is the first man they were looking for earlier in the day.

0:18:38 > 0:18:40Are you at home now, are you?

0:18:40 > 0:18:43Oh, right, well, I tell you what, I know you've just got home from work,

0:18:43 > 0:18:45why don't you grab yourself some tea,

0:18:45 > 0:18:47and I'll come and see you in the next hour, hour and a half,

0:18:47 > 0:18:49and come and have a chat with you?

0:18:49 > 0:18:51- Is that OK?- It's OK.

0:18:51 > 0:18:54Thanks for ringing me. I'll come and see you soon.

0:18:54 > 0:18:56- OK, thank you.- Cheers. Thank you, bye-bye.

0:18:56 > 0:19:00Days like this make up for the long days when you are really struggling,

0:19:00 > 0:19:03when you go to address after address and you don't get anything,

0:19:03 > 0:19:06so it just shows, even after seven years of doing this, you just...

0:19:06 > 0:19:08You just don't know how it is going to play out.

0:19:10 > 0:19:14Once they have the Hungarian burglar in custody,

0:19:14 > 0:19:18they head back out to arrest the man who called Dave earlier.

0:19:18 > 0:19:21I have no doubt he has not a clue what this is about,

0:19:21 > 0:19:22so we're going to go in there,

0:19:22 > 0:19:25hope his kids are in bed so they don't have to witness this,

0:19:25 > 0:19:26and we will talk him through it.

0:19:32 > 0:19:34Back in 2003,

0:19:34 > 0:19:37drug courier Scott Coleman was arrested transporting heroin

0:19:37 > 0:19:40from Liverpool to Aberdeen.

0:19:41 > 0:19:46But he evaded justice, fleeing from Scotland whilst on bail.

0:19:46 > 0:19:50In 2005, he was arrested again for drug offences in Spain.

0:19:51 > 0:19:54And again he went on the run.

0:19:54 > 0:19:56This time staying under the radar for a long time.

0:19:59 > 0:20:03There's a number of ways in which people can hide themselves.

0:20:03 > 0:20:07They can hide themselves through fellow criminal enterprises, so,

0:20:07 > 0:20:09you know, they've

0:20:09 > 0:20:10been given accommodation,

0:20:10 > 0:20:14given cover and support by criminal organisations.

0:20:14 > 0:20:15Or they can go further afield.

0:20:17 > 0:20:20It would be a decade before the Liverpudlian drug courier would

0:20:20 > 0:20:23resurface again. This time in Amsterdam.

0:20:25 > 0:20:29For many years, serious crime officers in the city have worked

0:20:29 > 0:20:32closely with their counterparts on Merseyside.

0:20:32 > 0:20:36When you are wanted, we have good cooperation with the UK

0:20:36 > 0:20:44we have focused intelligence, and every chance we get to get people,

0:20:44 > 0:20:45we take.

0:20:47 > 0:20:49In 2015,

0:20:49 > 0:20:52a group of officers patrolling Gershwin Square in the business

0:20:52 > 0:20:54district of Amsterdam stopped a group of men

0:20:54 > 0:20:56who were acting suspiciously.

0:20:57 > 0:21:01Colleagues saw that a known Dutch criminal

0:21:01 > 0:21:03was talking to somebody else,

0:21:03 > 0:21:08on a corner, and they just went to check, "Hey, what is going on?"

0:21:10 > 0:21:12So that was the trigger.

0:21:12 > 0:21:17Steven van Dokkum was one of the officers who spotted the group.

0:21:17 > 0:21:19We decided to stop them and we

0:21:19 > 0:21:22wanted to see their passports and what they were doing here.

0:21:22 > 0:21:25We asked them if they know each other.

0:21:25 > 0:21:29They said no, but we had seen them talking to each other.

0:21:29 > 0:21:31So we started asking them some questions

0:21:31 > 0:21:33about what they were doing here,

0:21:33 > 0:21:37and we checked our police systems to see if they were...

0:21:38 > 0:21:40..if something comes up.

0:21:42 > 0:21:46Scott Coleman was using a false Irish passport,

0:21:46 > 0:21:48something many fugitives rely on,

0:21:48 > 0:21:51and he was now going by the name Wheeler.

0:21:52 > 0:21:55Immediately, the Dutch were suspicious

0:21:55 > 0:21:57because he couldn't provide certain

0:21:57 > 0:21:59details that tallied up with the passport,

0:21:59 > 0:22:02he didn't really know that much information about it,

0:22:02 > 0:22:05so they obviously wanted to dig... Dig further.

0:22:05 > 0:22:10Officers questioned Coleman about his supposed life back in Ireland.

0:22:11 > 0:22:12Can I phone your father?

0:22:12 > 0:22:14Can I phone your mother?

0:22:14 > 0:22:15Can I phone your school,

0:22:15 > 0:22:18where you were in school a couple of years ago?

0:22:18 > 0:22:21He said, "No, no, no. No, that is not possible."

0:22:21 > 0:22:25So he did not give any information to check.

0:22:27 > 0:22:33The authorities were soon able to confirm that the passport was false.

0:22:33 > 0:22:34One big giveaway,

0:22:34 > 0:22:37the Mr Wheeler described on the passport

0:22:37 > 0:22:39was a considerably shorter man.

0:22:40 > 0:22:42It should be 175.

0:22:42 > 0:22:44But he was taller than me, and I am 187.

0:22:44 > 0:22:46So that was very strange.

0:22:48 > 0:22:52Coleman was arrested on suspicion of carrying a false passport.

0:22:52 > 0:22:55But then the Dutch discovered they had arrested a drug dealer,

0:22:55 > 0:22:58wanted in the UK and Spain.

0:22:59 > 0:23:03We took his fingerprints and

0:23:03 > 0:23:08we sent them all over Europe, then we got identification from Spain.

0:23:09 > 0:23:13It was time for the Dutch police to reveal they knew who he was.

0:23:14 > 0:23:16He asked us, "How long will it take?

0:23:16 > 0:23:20"Because I have to go, I have important things to do, I'd like to go.

0:23:20 > 0:23:22"How long will it take?" And then we said,

0:23:22 > 0:23:26"Yes, we are in contact with the police of Liverpool, Merseyside Police.

0:23:26 > 0:23:28"Depending how quick they are."

0:23:28 > 0:23:31And then he said, "Oh, no.

0:23:31 > 0:23:32"You got me."

0:23:34 > 0:23:37Coleman had been on the run since 2003.

0:23:37 > 0:23:41It was finally time to send him home to face justice.

0:23:43 > 0:23:47It was really satisfying, it was...

0:23:47 > 0:23:49Especially when we heard

0:23:49 > 0:23:51he wasn't the guy he said he was.

0:23:53 > 0:23:56It was a real... A great feeling.

0:23:56 > 0:23:58A lot about policing is to do with luck.

0:23:58 > 0:24:03We only need that piece of luck on one occasion to actually get what we

0:24:03 > 0:24:06are looking for. And, you know, Coleman fell foul of that in Aberdeen,

0:24:06 > 0:24:08and again in Amsterdam.

0:24:08 > 0:24:12Ultimately, you know, the authorities will always catch up with you.

0:24:21 > 0:24:22In West Yorkshire,

0:24:22 > 0:24:26police officers Dave Lockwood and Tom Allen are having a good day.

0:24:26 > 0:24:29You don't have to say anything, but anything you do say may be given in

0:24:29 > 0:24:31evidence. Do you understand?

0:24:31 > 0:24:34Earlier, they arrested this man wanted in Hungary for three burglaries.

0:24:37 > 0:24:40And then, on the way back to the police station,

0:24:40 > 0:24:43Dave gets a call from the other man they've been looking for.

0:24:44 > 0:24:48Roman Horbik is a convicted fraudster with a prison sentence

0:24:48 > 0:24:51waiting for him in Poland.

0:24:53 > 0:24:54Are you at home now, are you?

0:24:54 > 0:24:55Yes, yes.

0:24:55 > 0:24:57All right, well, I tell you what,

0:24:57 > 0:24:59why don't you grab yourself some tea and I'll come and see you

0:24:59 > 0:25:03in the next hour, hour and a half, and I'll come and have a chat with you?

0:25:07 > 0:25:09Now, they are on their way to arrest him for crimes

0:25:09 > 0:25:12he committed in Poland 15 years ago.

0:25:13 > 0:25:15- Hi, Roman. Hi. - DOG BARKS

0:25:15 > 0:25:17Are we OK to come in? Thank you.

0:25:18 > 0:25:20Are your children...? Children gone to bed?

0:25:20 > 0:25:22- Yes.- Yeah. Shut the door so we can't hear the dog.

0:25:24 > 0:25:26- Thank you for ringing me.- Yeah.

0:25:26 > 0:25:28Do you speak really good English?

0:25:28 > 0:25:29Not really good, but OK.

0:25:29 > 0:25:31- If I talk slow...- Yes.- Right.

0:25:31 > 0:25:33Thanks for ringing me. We've come back.

0:25:33 > 0:25:36Obviously you didn't know, because I didn't explain properly,

0:25:36 > 0:25:37why we are here.

0:25:38 > 0:25:40There is no other way of saying this.

0:25:40 > 0:25:41It is bad news, I'm afraid.

0:25:41 > 0:25:43There is a problem in Poland.

0:25:43 > 0:25:47Right. There's two offences the Polish have issued a warrant for

0:25:47 > 0:25:49your arrest for.

0:25:49 > 0:25:51That is an offence of fraud

0:25:51 > 0:25:55and an offence of handling a stolen vehicle.

0:25:55 > 0:25:57Did you know something about this?

0:25:57 > 0:25:58Is it come as a shock or...

0:25:58 > 0:26:00did you expect it?

0:26:00 > 0:26:01No, I did not expect.

0:26:01 > 0:26:03Just as Dave thought,

0:26:03 > 0:26:07the wanted man clearly hasn't a clue why the police are here.

0:26:07 > 0:26:10Basically, they've said, in 2001, I know it was a long time ago,

0:26:10 > 0:26:1315 years ago, they are saying you've withdrawn loads of money from

0:26:13 > 0:26:15the bank and not paid the money back.

0:26:15 > 0:26:17- Yes, yes.- You know something about that?

0:26:17 > 0:26:19- Right.- Finally,

0:26:19 > 0:26:23it seems the wanted man remembers what it is he has to answer for.

0:26:23 > 0:26:26So I am arresting you on a European Arrest Warrant for an offence

0:26:26 > 0:26:29of fraud and handling stolen goods. So you do not have to say anything,

0:26:29 > 0:26:31but anything you do say may be given in evidence, OK?

0:26:31 > 0:26:34Yes. I hope I come back tomorrow.

0:26:34 > 0:26:36As long as you can satisfy your bail conditions,

0:26:36 > 0:26:38I don't think you'll have a problem.

0:26:38 > 0:26:39OK?

0:26:44 > 0:26:47He went up and gave all his kids a hug and a kiss,

0:26:47 > 0:26:49and spoke to his missus a little bit in private.

0:26:49 > 0:26:51You know, there is no need for us to stop that.

0:26:51 > 0:26:52We've got what we need.

0:26:54 > 0:26:58If that keeps him a bit calmer while he is with us, then so be it.

0:26:59 > 0:27:03Horbik is taken into custody, where he will join Tibor Paksy,

0:27:03 > 0:27:07the Hungarian burglar Dave and Tom arrested earlier in the day.

0:27:08 > 0:27:11Sergeant, this is Roman Horbik,

0:27:11 > 0:27:15he has been arrested by myself at 8:40pm this evening.

0:27:16 > 0:27:20Tomorrow morning, both Horbik and Paksy will be taken to London to

0:27:20 > 0:27:25appear before a judge at an extradition hearing in Westminster Magistrates' Court.

0:27:26 > 0:27:29OK, Roman. There is a blanket on there for you.

0:27:29 > 0:27:32And there is a buzzer on the wall, just there.

0:27:32 > 0:27:35That goes through to the front desk, so if you don't feel well or you need anything,

0:27:35 > 0:27:38water or anything like that, push the button, let us know,

0:27:38 > 0:27:40all right? OK?

0:27:42 > 0:27:45These... Both of them, 200 metres apart, both addresses.

0:27:45 > 0:27:47Totally unconnected, different people.

0:27:47 > 0:27:49We went for two and got two.

0:27:52 > 0:27:56Roman Horbik was extradited back to Poland,

0:27:56 > 0:27:59to serve the rest of his prison sentence for fraud.

0:28:01 > 0:28:05Persistent burglar Tibor Paksy has been sent back to Hungary to serve

0:28:05 > 0:28:08the remaining time on his sentences.

0:28:11 > 0:28:14A judge decided to refuse the Moldovan government's request

0:28:14 > 0:28:18to extradite the man who was arrested by the Metropolitan Police for fraud.

0:28:20 > 0:28:24In November 2015, drug runner Scott Coleman

0:28:24 > 0:28:26was extradited back to the UK.

0:28:26 > 0:28:29He was sentenced to five years behind bars.

0:28:29 > 0:28:31And when that is done,

0:28:31 > 0:28:35he will have to serve another three years in a Spanish prison.
