0:00:03 > 0:00:06The friendly, caring bobby pounding the beat has always been

0:00:06 > 0:00:09the hallmark of British policing...

0:00:09 > 0:00:11Fantastic. The pleasure's been all mine, my friend.

0:00:11 > 0:00:13..and has even been immortalised on film

0:00:13 > 0:00:15by the fictional Dixon Of Dock Green.

0:00:15 > 0:00:16Good evening, all.

0:00:16 > 0:00:18SIREN WAILS

0:00:18 > 0:00:22Today's neighbourhood police teams continue that tradition,

0:00:22 > 0:00:25but also tackle the root causes of crime head-on...

0:00:25 > 0:00:28SMASHING ..by targeting known hot spots...

0:00:28 > 0:00:29Unlucky.

0:00:29 > 0:00:32..stamping down on antisocial behaviour...

0:00:32 > 0:00:34I'm arresting you for a public order offence.

0:00:34 > 0:00:36..and waging war on illegal drugs.

0:00:36 > 0:00:38I can smell cannabis already.

0:00:38 > 0:00:40On this new series of Neighbourhood Blues,

0:00:40 > 0:00:43we follow the police men and women of Somerset,

0:00:43 > 0:00:47as they continue their quest to make our streets a safer place.

0:01:02 > 0:01:03Coming up...

0:01:03 > 0:01:07A shocking, unprovoked attack is caught on CCTV.

0:01:07 > 0:01:09I saw him run towards him. Yeah.

0:01:09 > 0:01:13And the guy's... I didn't actually see it go in. OK.

0:01:13 > 0:01:18The neighbourhood team go undercover to catch drug abusers by surprise.

0:01:18 > 0:01:21He's running. He's running. He's heading towards the train station on

0:01:21 > 0:01:23Redgate Street. He's running.

0:01:23 > 0:01:25And the sorrowful drunk...

0:01:25 > 0:01:27I'm sorry, mate. I'm begging you, mate.

0:01:27 > 0:01:30..is hacked off about his new living quarters.

0:01:30 > 0:01:32BLEEP! Calm down.

0:01:32 > 0:01:35Stand up. BLEEP! Stand up.

0:01:39 > 0:01:43Serious unprovoked assaults are rare, thank goodness,

0:01:43 > 0:01:47but whenever one does take place, it can shock the whole community.

0:01:47 > 0:01:49So, it's vital the neighbourhood police are seen

0:01:49 > 0:01:52to deal with them quickly and effectively

0:01:52 > 0:01:55to keep a lid on people's fear of violence.

0:01:57 > 0:02:01In Weston-super-Mare, an emergency call has come in.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04Jon Phippen is responding.

0:02:04 > 0:02:08Someone has been the victim of a senseless and violent assault.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12The attack happened outside an office

0:02:12 > 0:02:15and the building CCTV cameras

0:02:15 > 0:02:19have recorded the whole shocking incident.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21The ambulance is on the way, bud, all right?

0:02:23 > 0:02:26The youth comes out of the front door for a cigarette.

0:02:26 > 0:02:30He lights up and then walks around to the side of the building.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34While innocently enjoying his smoke,

0:02:34 > 0:02:38the CCTV camera back at the front picks up a car

0:02:38 > 0:02:40stopped on the road outside.

0:02:41 > 0:02:45A man wearing a hoodie suddenly jumps out of the car

0:02:45 > 0:02:50and leaps over the wall before, for some reason, returning to his car.

0:02:51 > 0:02:54The lad with a cigarette is still minding his own business,

0:02:54 > 0:02:57making the most of his break.

0:02:57 > 0:03:01When suddenly, his world changes.

0:03:01 > 0:03:04The man in the hoodie runs back to the building and makes a beeline for

0:03:04 > 0:03:06his prey.

0:03:06 > 0:03:09He chases the youth round to the car park

0:03:09 > 0:03:12where he brings him to the ground and then starts hitting him.

0:03:14 > 0:03:16The lad tries to defend himself,

0:03:16 > 0:03:20but his attacker is too strong and brings him down again.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23With the victim now defenceless,

0:03:23 > 0:03:26it appears the assailant has got something to say to him

0:03:26 > 0:03:31while jabbing his back with what turned out to be some scissors,

0:03:31 > 0:03:34before he casually walks off.

0:03:34 > 0:03:37As the man leaves, he is joined by a woman,

0:03:37 > 0:03:40she appears to be the driver of the car.

0:03:42 > 0:03:44Office staff who witnessed the attack

0:03:44 > 0:03:46quickly come to the lad's aid.

0:03:47 > 0:03:49Were you here when it happened, were you?

0:03:49 > 0:03:53We were in the office, we looked at the CCTV and could see something.

0:03:53 > 0:03:55So, we came straight out,

0:03:55 > 0:03:58he was just going up that little path there

0:03:58 > 0:04:00and I said, "What's going on?"

0:04:00 > 0:04:02And he turned to talk to us, he had the scissors.

0:04:02 > 0:04:04He was trying to hide them up his sleeve. OK.

0:04:04 > 0:04:08Realising the attacker had scissors makes the whole incident

0:04:08 > 0:04:12even more horrifying, as they can be as dangerous as a knife.

0:04:14 > 0:04:17For the log, the male's been stabbed with scissors.

0:04:19 > 0:04:24The air ambulance has been called in and paramedics are now at the scene,

0:04:24 > 0:04:29but why has such a mindless attack happened in broad daylight?

0:04:29 > 0:04:32Any idea what it's about? They were stopped at the lights

0:04:32 > 0:04:36and the guy sticking fingers and BLEEP smiling. So, BLEEP reacted

0:04:36 > 0:04:37and went like that too.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40And with that, he jumped out of the car and chased him. All right.

0:04:40 > 0:04:42So, did you see the stabbing itself?

0:04:42 > 0:04:44I saw him run towards him. Yeah.

0:04:44 > 0:04:46And the guy's...

0:04:46 > 0:04:49I didn't actually see it go in. OK. And then he...

0:04:49 > 0:04:54The attacker's car caught on CCTV is a vital clue.

0:04:54 > 0:04:56Did you see the car that left?

0:04:56 > 0:04:59I didn't see the reg, but it's a grey Volkswagen Beetle.

0:04:59 > 0:05:03Grey, was it? Yeah. They were all saying it was blue.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06It looked grey/blue. Was it? It looked grey to me. OK.

0:05:06 > 0:05:08It's the index I need. Yeah.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11With no registration number at this stage,

0:05:11 > 0:05:16it is going to be difficult to track down the grey/blue VW.

0:05:16 > 0:05:20So, Jon's next thought is to see if CCTV picked it up.

0:05:20 > 0:05:23Yeah, can you ask if they've got view of BLEEP Street

0:05:23 > 0:05:24with any of their cameras?

0:05:24 > 0:05:27And if so, is there a new shaped, blue VW Beetle about,

0:05:27 > 0:05:30potentially three up - two males and one female?

0:05:30 > 0:05:33One thing that is agreed about the Beetle is

0:05:33 > 0:05:35that it's a convertible.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38And there aren't many of those in Weston.

0:05:38 > 0:05:40We've got to know we've got scant details,

0:05:40 > 0:05:43but apparently, it's a dark, dark navy blue...

0:05:44 > 0:05:46So there shouldn't be too many.

0:05:48 > 0:05:53We are quite away from being able to find out who our offender is,

0:05:53 > 0:05:55but there are checks going on,

0:05:55 > 0:05:58so hopefully, we can come up with an index.

0:05:58 > 0:06:04Finding the car will, with any luck, lead Jon straight to the suspect.

0:06:05 > 0:06:11Thankfully, the victim's condition isn't critical, but he is in shock.

0:06:11 > 0:06:13Obviously, we don't want someone as violent as that

0:06:13 > 0:06:16walking about, so the sooner we can trace the vehicle

0:06:16 > 0:06:19and find out who he might be, the sooner we can get him into custody.

0:06:19 > 0:06:21After being checked out by the paramedics,

0:06:21 > 0:06:24it's apparent the lad has had a lucky escape.

0:06:24 > 0:06:26What has he got injury-wise? Is he just...

0:06:31 > 0:06:33The puncture wound is not too deep, though?

0:06:35 > 0:06:37That's good.

0:06:37 > 0:06:39Appears our...

0:06:39 > 0:06:42victim has got a small puncture wound to the back.

0:06:42 > 0:06:44Doesn't look like the scissors have gone in too deep.

0:06:44 > 0:06:46I think the bigger concern is where he's banged his head

0:06:46 > 0:06:48when he's gone to the ground.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51Obviously, he is with the ambulance, so he's with the right people.

0:06:52 > 0:06:55Suddenly, Jon gets a call.

0:06:55 > 0:07:00CCTV picked up a vehicle that might possibly be our vehicle.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03So, we're just going to go off and make that inquiry now.

0:07:03 > 0:07:07Later, we will discover whether the inquiry leads to the suspect.

0:07:14 > 0:07:17Getting to grips with complaints about illegal drugs is

0:07:17 > 0:07:20one of the neighbourhood police's most pressing concerns,

0:07:20 > 0:07:25particularly because as so many other crimes are connected to drugs.

0:07:25 > 0:07:26It causes lots of problems.

0:07:26 > 0:07:29Yeah, you've got the people stealing for the money.

0:07:29 > 0:07:33You've got the actions that people do under the influence of drugs.

0:07:33 > 0:07:34So, it just brings down everything.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37If it has consequences on other people, which it does,

0:07:37 > 0:07:39it's not the right thing.

0:07:39 > 0:07:41The neighbourhood team in Bridgwater are doing whatever

0:07:41 > 0:07:45they can to take out the dealers and users.

0:07:45 > 0:07:49The neighbourhood officers are really focusing on those issues,

0:07:49 > 0:07:51if you like, that keep coming back.

0:07:51 > 0:07:52And their focus is around

0:07:52 > 0:07:55preventing issues from occurring in the first place.

0:07:55 > 0:07:58So, they are looking at that preventative strategy

0:07:58 > 0:08:02and dealing with problems in the medium to long term.

0:08:02 > 0:08:06Today, Andy's team are running an operation to clamp down on people

0:08:06 > 0:08:12openly buying and selling illegal drugs on Bridgwater's streets.

0:08:12 > 0:08:16Rachel Aston is briefing officers on today's plan of action.

0:08:16 > 0:08:19Today is going to mainly be about intel gathering.

0:08:19 > 0:08:22We've got some local people complaining about drug dealing

0:08:22 > 0:08:26in the area and the areas of dealing will be around the train station.

0:08:26 > 0:08:30We know they are using the trains to come to and from Bridgwater.

0:08:30 > 0:08:32The station is not the only concern.

0:08:32 > 0:08:38..and Sydenham have lots of needles being found by staff members

0:08:38 > 0:08:42from the school, lots of children are accessing that area as well.

0:08:42 > 0:08:44So pay particularly close attention to that.

0:08:44 > 0:08:47Uniforms have been left behind today.

0:08:47 > 0:08:50Being in civvies means the cops can go unnoticed

0:08:50 > 0:08:53and take offenders off their guard.

0:08:53 > 0:08:56Rachel and Jen Atkinson are in an unmarked car

0:08:56 > 0:08:58that also won't draw attention.

0:08:58 > 0:09:02We know the faces of the people, but unfortunately, they also know us.

0:09:02 > 0:09:05So, we're staying very much in the plain car,

0:09:05 > 0:09:07going around the areas that we know the dealers are coming from

0:09:07 > 0:09:09or they're likely to be doing the deals in.

0:09:09 > 0:09:13And we'll be acting with CCTV as a bit of a spotter car

0:09:13 > 0:09:16and then directing people to the places they need to go,

0:09:16 > 0:09:20and hopefully, getting the deals and the naughty people at the time.

0:09:21 > 0:09:24Collette Ranson and Kev Curd are going to patrol

0:09:24 > 0:09:26around the railway station.

0:09:28 > 0:09:34PCSO Jo Farrow is observing from the council CCTV control room

0:09:34 > 0:09:38and she will relay the movements of people on the street to Rachel

0:09:38 > 0:09:39and Jen in the car.

0:09:43 > 0:09:45We've got these...three men and they've just walked all the way

0:09:45 > 0:09:49from West Street all the way through the town. Acting quite suspiciously.

0:09:49 > 0:09:52They are just hovering around. It looks like they're waiting

0:09:52 > 0:09:56for somebody at the moment, but two of them are disappearing off

0:09:56 > 0:09:58towards The Church Street direction.

0:09:58 > 0:10:00I'm going to keep an eye on them.

0:10:00 > 0:10:04Within moments, Jo is back in contact with Rachel and Jen.

0:10:04 > 0:10:06She has seen someone else acting strangely.

0:10:09 > 0:10:13That's no... We just happen to be at the end,

0:10:13 > 0:10:15so we will float around and see

0:10:15 > 0:10:16if he pops out anywhere.

0:10:16 > 0:10:20Nothing wrong with walking funny, unless it is

0:10:20 > 0:10:24because they've got drugs concealed between their butt cheeks,

0:10:24 > 0:10:27something that has been found to be going on here.

0:10:27 > 0:10:30She believes he might have drugs plugged at the moment

0:10:30 > 0:10:33because he is walking quite uncomfortably, shall we say.

0:10:33 > 0:10:37Having drugs plugged is a rather unpleasant way to hide drugs

0:10:37 > 0:10:39when travelling around.

0:10:39 > 0:10:44We use it to refer to drug dealers or runners that will conceal

0:10:44 > 0:10:49the drugs anywhere they can, usually up their backsides.

0:10:49 > 0:10:52Because then when we search them, we can't find anything on them.

0:10:55 > 0:10:57Whereabouts are you?

0:10:57 > 0:11:00Jen's just had a call from one of her plainclothed colleagues.

0:11:00 > 0:11:03SHE MUMBLES

0:11:03 > 0:11:06..the address on the actual estate that we are interested in,

0:11:06 > 0:11:09so we're just going to head over there at the moment.

0:11:09 > 0:11:12We don't know exactly what's going on, but they sounded quite

0:11:12 > 0:11:15rushed with it, so I'm assuming they've got someone stopped.

0:11:15 > 0:11:19Uniformed officers backing up the team chased two lads.

0:11:19 > 0:11:23One has been caught, but the other has managed to get away.

0:11:23 > 0:11:25Rachel and Jen go after him.

0:11:29 > 0:11:32Almost straightaway, they spot a lad in a blue jacket.

0:11:32 > 0:11:35He's running. He's running.

0:11:35 > 0:11:38He's heading toward the train station, Redgate Street and running.

0:11:38 > 0:11:42They believe he sold drugs to the lad who has been being detained.

0:11:43 > 0:11:44Where is he now?

0:11:50 > 0:11:52If the seller is from out of town,

0:11:52 > 0:11:55it is likely he will make his getaway by train.

0:11:55 > 0:12:01It might've been that he scooted down the alley.

0:12:01 > 0:12:03OVER RADIO: 'So unless he comes over the bridge,

0:12:03 > 0:12:04'we are not going to see him.'

0:12:06 > 0:12:08Yeah, we just saw him on Redgate Street

0:12:08 > 0:12:10and as soon as he clocked us, he started running.

0:12:10 > 0:12:12So we thought he might come over the foot bridge,

0:12:12 > 0:12:15but if you've not seen him, he's obviously circled back on himself.

0:12:17 > 0:12:19Either way, he has disappeared,

0:12:19 > 0:12:24so Rachel and Jen head back to where the other suspect is being detained.

0:12:27 > 0:12:31Kev gives a rundown on what's just happened.

0:12:31 > 0:12:34We identified ourselves as police officers because this lad

0:12:34 > 0:12:36and another lad have climbed over a school fence.

0:12:36 > 0:12:38This lad has then decided to run off,

0:12:38 > 0:12:40dropped his rucksack in the lane.

0:12:40 > 0:12:43I've then just given chase on foot to here,

0:12:43 > 0:12:46where he has decided to become a bit uncooperative

0:12:46 > 0:12:49and fought with me in the middle of the road.

0:12:51 > 0:12:54Just a couple of scrapes to my knuckles,

0:12:54 > 0:12:56but nothing major.

0:12:56 > 0:12:58The desperate suspect threw whatever

0:12:58 > 0:13:00he was carrying down a drain.

0:13:00 > 0:13:03As he sort of stopped running, he's crouched over that drain

0:13:03 > 0:13:06and turned to face me and dropped something down through.

0:13:06 > 0:13:10He said it was a Spice bag, bag of Spice.

0:13:10 > 0:13:14Luckily, whatever it was hasn't gone far.

0:13:14 > 0:13:16They've just had a look down there

0:13:16 > 0:13:18and he is telling us it's Spice, which is a legal high,

0:13:18 > 0:13:22but Herbal Haze has been found down the drain.

0:13:22 > 0:13:23Wow.

0:13:23 > 0:13:27A mixture of possibly cannabis and legal high.

0:13:27 > 0:13:31Blueberry-smelling cannabis, at the moment, is what we've got, I think.

0:13:31 > 0:13:35These substances, known as synthetic cannabis, are a mix of herbs

0:13:35 > 0:13:37and man-made chemicals often flavoured.

0:13:37 > 0:13:42But they can be stronger and more addictive than cannabis.

0:13:42 > 0:13:44And that's not all that went down the drain.

0:13:44 > 0:13:48A substance inside a piece of foil has also been found.

0:13:48 > 0:13:50You'll get it tested, won't you?

0:13:50 > 0:13:52It's something, a fairly small amount.

0:13:52 > 0:13:55Jen has got a good idea of what it is.

0:13:55 > 0:13:57He's trying to say it's a legal high,

0:13:57 > 0:13:59but the way it is wrapped up inside the packet,

0:13:59 > 0:14:02we are pretty sure it's going to come back as heroin.

0:14:02 > 0:14:04So, he will get interviewed later on.

0:14:04 > 0:14:07The drugs will have to go for testing, but good start.

0:14:07 > 0:14:10With the suspect now off to custody,

0:14:10 > 0:14:12back at his desk,

0:14:12 > 0:14:16Kev takes a closer look at what's inside the foil wrap.

0:14:16 > 0:14:21A brown powder. There's a possibility it's going to be heroin.

0:14:21 > 0:14:24A small amount just there inside the foil,

0:14:24 > 0:14:27which he has had concealed inside his legal high.

0:14:29 > 0:14:30So, he may need to be further arrested

0:14:30 > 0:14:33for possession of a Class A substance.

0:14:33 > 0:14:34And he will be interviewed

0:14:34 > 0:14:37and that will be tested following his interview.

0:14:37 > 0:14:41After questioning, it was discovered that the drug user was

0:14:41 > 0:14:45wanted in relation to two other offences and is currently

0:14:45 > 0:14:49on bail pending confirmation of the substance found in the foil.

0:14:51 > 0:14:52This day has been really successful.

0:14:52 > 0:14:56We've gained a lot of intelligence today just from being out

0:14:56 > 0:15:00on the street in plain clothes, as well as having officers in our CCTV.

0:15:00 > 0:15:02So, yeah, really positive day today.

0:15:09 > 0:15:11Earlier in Weston-super-Mare,

0:15:11 > 0:15:14Jon Phippen was responding to an unprovoked attack.

0:15:16 > 0:15:20A youth standing outside a building was attacked by a stranger

0:15:20 > 0:15:21out of the blue.

0:15:23 > 0:15:27He chased the youth, brought him to the ground and started punching him

0:15:27 > 0:15:30before getting away in a blue VW Beetle convertible.

0:15:31 > 0:15:35In the fight, the victim received a stab wound from a pair

0:15:35 > 0:15:39of scissors, but thankfully, he wasn't seriously injured.

0:15:40 > 0:15:44From CCTV footage and witness accounts,

0:15:44 > 0:15:47police have a description of the attacker and his car,

0:15:47 > 0:15:51but unfortunately, not the registration number.

0:15:51 > 0:15:55Now, all of Weston's neighbourhood team are on the hunt

0:15:55 > 0:15:56for the vehicle.

0:15:56 > 0:16:00With only three dark blue VW Beetle convertibles registered

0:16:00 > 0:16:01in Weston-super-Mare,

0:16:01 > 0:16:06it should hopefully just be a process of elimination.

0:16:06 > 0:16:09Sharp-eyed Jon Phippen has just spotted one of them.

0:16:09 > 0:16:12Ooh, ooh, there's one at the back. Is there?

0:16:12 > 0:16:15We need to get that way. Yeah.

0:16:16 > 0:16:19If the this Beetle doesn't lead to the attacker,

0:16:19 > 0:16:23at least there are only two other ones to investigate.

0:16:27 > 0:16:29Can someone do some checks?

0:16:29 > 0:16:32See if this vehicle is known to us or anything.

0:16:32 > 0:16:34Yeah, that's needed, thank you.

0:16:34 > 0:16:37Because the assault on the youth was so random,

0:16:37 > 0:16:40they need to find the suspect as soon as possible.

0:16:40 > 0:16:45For update information, my colleague is going in.

0:16:45 > 0:16:48You've got CCTV covering the service area where the vehicle is parked.

0:16:48 > 0:16:49The worry for us is, you know,

0:16:49 > 0:16:52has this person got mental health issues

0:16:52 > 0:16:55or are they just someone who's just going to go around

0:16:55 > 0:16:56randomly stabbing people?

0:16:56 > 0:16:58You know, we just don't want those people around town, really.

0:16:58 > 0:17:02After checking the store's CCTV footage,

0:17:02 > 0:17:05it's discovered this Beetle belongs to an elderly couple.

0:17:05 > 0:17:09Weston's two other blue soft top Beetles were also eliminated

0:17:09 > 0:17:11from the inquiry.

0:17:11 > 0:17:16So, over the next few days, police widen their search.

0:17:16 > 0:17:19And with the help of hundreds of CCTV cameras,

0:17:19 > 0:17:2325 miles away in Bristol, they find the car

0:17:23 > 0:17:26and the man they've been hunting for.

0:17:26 > 0:17:29We've managed to get a male in custody.

0:17:29 > 0:17:32And through using all of our resources

0:17:32 > 0:17:35and partner agencies like North Somerset Council

0:17:35 > 0:17:37and their CCTV system

0:17:37 > 0:17:40as well as the ANPR cameras, we were able to trace the vehicle.

0:17:44 > 0:17:48Checks against that vehicle have shown the female owner.

0:17:48 > 0:17:52And checks on our intelligence system have shown her boyfriend

0:17:52 > 0:17:53to be the offender.

0:17:55 > 0:17:58It has sent shocks through the community.

0:17:58 > 0:18:01From a reassurance point of view, it's great that, you know,

0:18:01 > 0:18:03from what we had on the night, which was very little

0:18:03 > 0:18:06in terms of a suspect, so actually through the work we've done

0:18:06 > 0:18:08with our agencies and colleagues and detectives,

0:18:08 > 0:18:09actually lead to an arrest.

0:18:09 > 0:18:11So, it is absolutely fantastic

0:18:11 > 0:18:13and now all we want is a good result at court.

0:18:14 > 0:18:19Despite all the detective work, witnesses were not able to

0:18:19 > 0:18:21pick out the suspect in an identity parade.

0:18:21 > 0:18:25And with no weapon or DNA ever found,

0:18:25 > 0:18:29the decision to go ahead with the prosecution was dropped by the CPS.

0:18:37 > 0:18:40Still to come on Neighbourhood Blues...

0:18:40 > 0:18:44A store manager is threatened after a tussle with an irate customer.

0:18:44 > 0:18:46As he was leaving, got his camera out, tried filming me,

0:18:46 > 0:18:49told me he was going to get all his mates to pull up outside

0:18:49 > 0:18:51and they were going to wait for me.

0:18:51 > 0:18:54And a woman is the victim of daylight robbery.

0:18:54 > 0:18:56"Don't scream, I'm taking your handbag."

0:18:56 > 0:18:59And by the time that's registered and you've actually turned around,

0:18:59 > 0:19:02he was actually out there and running up the step.

0:19:08 > 0:19:11It's fair to say that youth and fashion go hand-in-hand,

0:19:11 > 0:19:14especially urban fashion.

0:19:14 > 0:19:16In Weston-super-Mare,

0:19:16 > 0:19:19the latest must-have fashion accessory

0:19:19 > 0:19:21is the man bag.

0:19:21 > 0:19:24Working the streets, neighbourhood cops get to know all

0:19:24 > 0:19:25the latest trends.

0:19:28 > 0:19:32This morning, Russ Millier is responding to a call.

0:19:32 > 0:19:34Two fashion-conscious youths,

0:19:34 > 0:19:36who are wanted for a robbery earlier today,

0:19:36 > 0:19:39have just been seen on Bournville estate

0:19:39 > 0:19:41and the stolen item is...

0:19:41 > 0:19:42a man bag.

0:19:43 > 0:19:47The victim has given full descriptions of the suspects,

0:19:47 > 0:19:49so as he approaches the estate,

0:19:49 > 0:19:52Russ calls CCTV to help with the search.

0:19:57 > 0:20:00Grasmere, mate. If you'd zoom that camera that's on Grasmere,

0:20:00 > 0:20:04down to the far left-hand corner

0:20:04 > 0:20:06and just keep it on there. I'm going to go on the other side.

0:20:06 > 0:20:08Just see if they pop back out.

0:20:08 > 0:20:12He's wearing an all-in-one sort of tracksuit.

0:20:12 > 0:20:14And the other one is wearing, like, a grey hooded top.

0:20:14 > 0:20:19As CCTV keeps an eye on one end of the road,

0:20:19 > 0:20:21Russ spots a youth up ahead on the other.

0:20:23 > 0:20:26And he is wearing a grey hoodie matching the description

0:20:26 > 0:20:31of one of the suspects, plus the latest male accessory - a man bag.

0:20:34 > 0:20:35All right?

0:20:36 > 0:20:39Stay where you are a minute. Huh? Stay where you are a minute.

0:20:39 > 0:20:43Russ is familiar with most of the lads on the estate,

0:20:43 > 0:20:44but not this one.

0:20:45 > 0:20:47Never met you before.

0:20:47 > 0:20:49Never seen you on the Bournville.

0:20:49 > 0:20:51How long have you lived down here?

0:20:51 > 0:20:52Really?

0:20:52 > 0:20:54Are you known to us, mate?

0:20:54 > 0:20:55No?

0:20:57 > 0:21:00Just wear the same old man bags that the rest of them wear.

0:21:02 > 0:21:05But before Russ can have a proper word with the youth,

0:21:05 > 0:21:07he gets an emergency call.

0:21:09 > 0:21:10I'll leave you to it, mate. All right?

0:21:10 > 0:21:13Russ had realised the lad isn't one of the two suspects.

0:21:13 > 0:21:16Now, he has been told they've just been seen across the estate.

0:21:18 > 0:21:19Russ wastes no time.

0:21:19 > 0:21:22SIREN WAILS

0:21:28 > 0:21:31Two sharp-eyed PCSOs recognised the suspects

0:21:31 > 0:21:32and have got them detained.

0:21:32 > 0:21:35That's fine. I'm not saying that you have. I'm just saying...

0:21:35 > 0:21:38I haven't been in town today, mate. I know. I'm not saying you have.

0:21:38 > 0:21:40I'm saying you've both been named, so therefore...

0:21:40 > 0:21:45This time, the youth in the grey hoodie is one that Russ knows.

0:21:45 > 0:21:46Come and take a seat in my car.

0:21:46 > 0:21:50Alongside providing a visible presence in a neighbourhood,

0:21:50 > 0:21:53the PCSO's role also includes intelligence gathering.

0:21:53 > 0:21:55Being on the beat, I get to know the regular people

0:21:55 > 0:21:58who are out and about, especially the two gentlemen

0:21:58 > 0:22:00I've stopped today. One of them is very well known to me

0:22:00 > 0:22:03for other offences. I can recognise them at quite a distance as well.

0:22:03 > 0:22:06It's really handy being able to know these people locally,

0:22:06 > 0:22:07and being able to stop them.

0:22:07 > 0:22:10While the youth in black is detained,

0:22:10 > 0:22:12Russ searches the one in the grey hoodie.

0:22:12 > 0:22:13What's in here?

0:22:16 > 0:22:17Your laptop?

0:22:18 > 0:22:21Right. Man bags. Is there anything in there that shouldn't be?

0:22:23 > 0:22:24A load of random stuff.

0:22:25 > 0:22:28As well as a possible stolen man bag,

0:22:28 > 0:22:31there's confusion over whom the laptop belongs to.

0:22:34 > 0:22:35So, it's your mate's laptop?

0:22:39 > 0:22:40OK.

0:22:44 > 0:22:46I don't know what's what at the minute. I'll find out for you.

0:22:51 > 0:22:53Yeah. Bummer, isn't it?

0:22:54 > 0:22:57RUSS WHISTLES

0:22:57 > 0:22:59Russ does a quick search of the lad...

0:23:02 > 0:23:03All right, take a seat back in there.

0:23:03 > 0:23:06..before taking a look inside the backpack

0:23:06 > 0:23:09where the two man bags are.

0:23:09 > 0:23:10Whose man bag is this one?

0:23:10 > 0:23:13Russ has seen a lot of man bags in his time,

0:23:13 > 0:23:17but not a top-of-the-range, designer one like this,

0:23:17 > 0:23:20which matches the description of the one stolen earlier.

0:23:20 > 0:23:22You are under arrest on suspicion of robbery this morning.

0:23:22 > 0:23:24You've been named responsible.

0:23:24 > 0:23:26Is there anything else in there you shouldn't have?

0:23:26 > 0:23:30But it's what's inside the bag that gets the lad into even more trouble.

0:23:30 > 0:23:34Also under arrest for possession of cannabis.

0:23:34 > 0:23:36It's a good piece of teamwork.

0:23:36 > 0:23:38PCSOs working with us on the Bournville,

0:23:38 > 0:23:41out on patrol, just come across it.

0:23:41 > 0:23:44You know, radioed us all in at different times.

0:23:44 > 0:23:47Yeah, really good piece of work, teamwork.

0:23:47 > 0:23:49It just shows that it works.

0:23:50 > 0:23:53The youth was sentenced to a month in prison for possession

0:23:53 > 0:23:56of the cannabis found in the man bag.

0:23:56 > 0:23:59Interestingly, the person who had the bag stolen

0:23:59 > 0:24:02decided not to press charges.

0:24:02 > 0:24:05The other youth was released without being charged.

0:24:11 > 0:24:14It takes a special kind of person to be a neighbourhood police officer.

0:24:14 > 0:24:17From the PCSOs in a team up to the inspector,

0:24:17 > 0:24:20they all possess a determination to make local neighbourhoods

0:24:20 > 0:24:26safer places and a resolve to improve people's lives.

0:24:26 > 0:24:27I bet any money you like that

0:24:27 > 0:24:30if we looked at their application forms for every single officer

0:24:30 > 0:24:32that has been part of this programme,

0:24:32 > 0:24:35you would see that they want to make a difference,

0:24:35 > 0:24:37they want to help people.

0:24:37 > 0:24:38And that's exactly what they do.

0:24:38 > 0:24:42Kev Curd is one of those who likes to help people.

0:24:42 > 0:24:46This morning in Bridgwater, he is on his way to aid a motorist

0:24:46 > 0:24:49who's broken down, blocking a busy main road.

0:24:49 > 0:24:52It's not appropriate to sit and wait for him to get recovery.

0:24:52 > 0:24:55It's going to cause us more problems in the long run.

0:24:55 > 0:24:57Right, you've got steering, have you?

0:24:57 > 0:25:00The sooner the car is out of the way,

0:25:00 > 0:25:02the sooner the traffic can move on.

0:25:02 > 0:25:05But it is going to require some manpower...

0:25:05 > 0:25:06Oh, my...

0:25:06 > 0:25:09..not just push the car to one side,

0:25:09 > 0:25:12but to manoeuvre it around a roundabout.

0:25:16 > 0:25:19One final push... KEV GROANS

0:25:19 > 0:25:21..and the workout is over for Bridgwater's strongmen.

0:25:21 > 0:25:23HE BLOWS RASPBERRIES

0:25:23 > 0:25:25Kev is still feeling the burn.

0:25:27 > 0:25:29I've been better. It's harder than it looks.

0:25:29 > 0:25:32And after a day of training yesterday,

0:25:32 > 0:25:35my shoulders and legs are hurting now.

0:25:35 > 0:25:38But he is off the road, traffic is flowing.

0:25:39 > 0:25:41With the traffic on the move again,

0:25:41 > 0:25:44no sooner is Kev back in the driving seat

0:25:44 > 0:25:47when he gets another call to do with cars.

0:25:48 > 0:25:50Thank you. En route to that person,

0:25:50 > 0:25:534891 is not a code one, so I'm making a first instance.

0:25:55 > 0:25:58The manager of a large motor accessories store has hit

0:25:58 > 0:26:01the panic button for immediate help.

0:26:01 > 0:26:06He has had a fight with a customer who tried to return a power unit,

0:26:06 > 0:26:08claiming it was bought from the store.

0:26:08 > 0:26:12Unfortunately, Kev is too late to catch him.

0:26:14 > 0:26:15OK.

0:26:15 > 0:26:17All right, thank you.

0:26:17 > 0:26:19Although the customer has driven off,

0:26:19 > 0:26:23Kev still needs to speak to the manager who pushed the panic button.

0:26:23 > 0:26:28The guy came in, trying to return an item, huge power unit. OK, like a...

0:26:28 > 0:26:31Like a... I can show you. Yeah, show me, then.

0:26:31 > 0:26:35Till staff and the manager refused to give the customer a refund

0:26:35 > 0:26:37for the power unit without proof

0:26:37 > 0:26:39that he had bought it from the store,

0:26:39 > 0:26:44which happens to be the most expensive one on sale at ?150.

0:26:44 > 0:26:47Unable provide any proof of purchase,

0:26:47 > 0:26:49the customer began making threats.

0:26:49 > 0:26:50Gave it a lot of mouth.

0:26:50 > 0:26:52Asked him to leave, as he was leaving,

0:26:52 > 0:26:54got his camera out, tried filming me.

0:26:54 > 0:26:57Telling me he was going to get all his mates to pull up outside

0:26:57 > 0:26:58and they were going to wait for me.

0:26:58 > 0:27:00I took his camera off him and deleted the photos.

0:27:00 > 0:27:02Cos he can't film me in my shop without my permission.

0:27:02 > 0:27:04That's why you've had a bit of a tumble

0:27:04 > 0:27:06cos he was trying to get his phone back? Yeah.

0:27:06 > 0:27:08It was a brave move by the manager to try to

0:27:08 > 0:27:12protect his privacy as the fight could have got out of hand.

0:27:12 > 0:27:16The manager also explains that after a recent stock check,

0:27:16 > 0:27:20staff had discovered that a power unit had gone missing.

0:27:20 > 0:27:25And it was the same kind as the one the customer was trying to return.

0:27:25 > 0:27:28So, the original theft, there is no CCTV of that at all? OK.

0:27:28 > 0:27:30Similar to a product you've had stolen. Yeah.

0:27:30 > 0:27:34You don't know if it's exactly the same one. Yeah. So, yeah.

0:27:35 > 0:27:37The original power unit theft may not have been

0:27:37 > 0:27:41caught on the store's CCTV cameras, but today's incident with

0:27:41 > 0:27:43the hostile customer has.

0:27:43 > 0:27:46He decided to tell me... That was him waving his hands, telling me he

0:27:46 > 0:27:49was going to get all his mates to park out in front of the store

0:27:49 > 0:27:51and make my life a misery unless I gave him a refund.

0:27:51 > 0:27:53I open the door and said, "Please leave.

0:27:53 > 0:27:55"I don't want you in the building any more."

0:27:55 > 0:27:57But instead of going out of the door,

0:27:57 > 0:28:01the customer started taking pictures of the manager on his mobile phone

0:28:01 > 0:28:04to which the manager took exception.

0:28:04 > 0:28:08So, a little bit of a ruckus down there.

0:28:08 > 0:28:10And then he gets up.

0:28:13 > 0:28:17The customer then left, but quickly came back for more.

0:28:17 > 0:28:20Yeah, he goes down to his car and comes back with his phone again

0:28:20 > 0:28:24while I was sat there and tries taking photos of my face again.

0:28:24 > 0:28:26That's when he asked me to come outside,

0:28:26 > 0:28:28so he could talk about it with me outside.

0:28:28 > 0:28:30Would I like to come outside and discuss it?

0:28:30 > 0:28:33Have you got registration on the car he was in?

0:28:33 > 0:28:35A white transit van.

0:28:35 > 0:28:38Kev takes the details to run through the PNC,

0:28:38 > 0:28:42police national computer, to find out who owns the van.

0:28:42 > 0:28:46All of a sudden, the manager gets an unexpected call.

0:28:46 > 0:28:47Yeah?

0:28:47 > 0:28:50I think this is him on the phone. Oh. Must be him on the phone.

0:28:51 > 0:28:55It sounds like the irate customer wants another word.

0:28:55 > 0:28:56Hello.

0:28:56 > 0:28:59But it isn't the customer.

0:28:59 > 0:29:01It's someone claiming to be his dad.

0:29:02 > 0:29:05He says he's not calling to complain,

0:29:05 > 0:29:08but to apologise for his son's behaviour.

0:29:10 > 0:29:12That's entirely up to you.

0:29:12 > 0:29:14If you want to return that item and you can prove, you know,

0:29:14 > 0:29:18proof of purchase with whatever - a receipt or bank details...

0:29:18 > 0:29:21The man on the phone says he does have a receipt

0:29:21 > 0:29:24and Kev asks him to pass on some advice to his son.

0:29:24 > 0:29:27What he needs to do, if he is trying to legitimately return an item,

0:29:27 > 0:29:28is one - have a receipt for it

0:29:28 > 0:29:30and two - if he hasn't got a receipt for it,

0:29:30 > 0:29:33just walk out the door when he is refused one.

0:29:33 > 0:29:35All right? Bye-bye.

0:29:35 > 0:29:37It sounds like his son has taken it upon himself to try

0:29:37 > 0:29:41and return that item without Dad sort of knowing what's going on.

0:29:41 > 0:29:44But if the phone call wasn't enough of a surprise,

0:29:44 > 0:29:46Kev's just found out something interesting

0:29:46 > 0:29:48about the customer's van.

0:29:48 > 0:29:51So, they want us potentially... If this vehicle is seen again

0:29:51 > 0:29:55is to stop and obtain the VIN number to make sure it belongs

0:29:55 > 0:29:56on these plates.

0:29:56 > 0:30:00The information is that the van might have the same number plates

0:30:00 > 0:30:04as those register to another transit van in Peterborough.

0:30:04 > 0:30:06So they've asked us to try and...

0:30:06 > 0:30:09If we see the vehicle again, stop the vehicle and obtain...

0:30:09 > 0:30:11try and marry up the vehicle identification number

0:30:11 > 0:30:13with the number plates.

0:30:15 > 0:30:18There was no hard evidence to prove that the power unit

0:30:18 > 0:30:22the customer tried to return was stolen from the store.

0:30:22 > 0:30:25And police are still keeping an eye out for the van.

0:30:32 > 0:30:34According to a recent report,

0:30:34 > 0:30:40police spent 53% of their time tackling drink-related crime.

0:30:41 > 0:30:43Dealing with aggressive drunks,

0:30:43 > 0:30:45who have had too much to drink,

0:30:45 > 0:30:47prevents officers like Jim Murray

0:30:47 > 0:30:50from dealing with other important issues.

0:30:51 > 0:30:53Jim has just spotted something going on up ahead.

0:30:53 > 0:30:55It looks like we might have a fight just here.

0:30:55 > 0:30:57I'm not sure what's going on.

0:30:57 > 0:30:59SHOUTING

0:30:59 > 0:31:02Listen to BLEEP me now!

0:31:02 > 0:31:05A young man is shouting at another lad who is holding on to him

0:31:05 > 0:31:06trying to calm him down.

0:31:06 > 0:31:08Put me down! Harry, listen...

0:31:08 > 0:31:12He is angry at being thrown out of a bar by security for being drunk.

0:31:12 > 0:31:16No! Harry, don't bite. CHATTER

0:31:16 > 0:31:19It's mayhem and the lad has just lashed out.

0:31:19 > 0:31:22Mate, has he...? Smile, you are on telly.

0:31:22 > 0:31:25Has he bitten someone? He just bit me.

0:31:25 > 0:31:29In the scuffle, the lad has bitten the security man from the bar.

0:31:29 > 0:31:32Jim needs to find out exactly what has happened.

0:31:32 > 0:31:34He came back several times.

0:31:34 > 0:31:36He got asked to move away, he stepped up again,

0:31:36 > 0:31:38he came through, tried to go through the doorman.

0:31:38 > 0:31:41Sat on him, lifted him up, moved away, brought him down here,

0:31:41 > 0:31:43started going crazy, came back again.

0:31:43 > 0:31:46The lad's drunken rage continues,

0:31:46 > 0:31:49but luckily, the bite isn't serious

0:31:49 > 0:31:52and the security man doesn't want to press charges.

0:31:52 > 0:31:54Sorry, do you want to make a complaint? Has he got you?

0:31:54 > 0:31:57Mate, I don't even know if he realised it was my arm

0:31:57 > 0:31:58he was biting, in all fairness.

0:31:58 > 0:32:02Even without a complaint, Jim is of a mind to arrest the lad.

0:32:02 > 0:32:04He needs to go home.

0:32:04 > 0:32:06I might have to, I'm just trying to find out what's going on.

0:32:06 > 0:32:08What's going on?

0:32:08 > 0:32:12He's claiming he was assaulted first, but he is so inebriated,

0:32:12 > 0:32:15it's difficult to get anything sensible out of him.

0:32:15 > 0:32:17Are you taking him home? You taking him home?

0:32:17 > 0:32:19Who's...

0:32:19 > 0:32:21CHATTER Oi, oi, oi.

0:32:21 > 0:32:24Listen, you are going to get arrested in a minute.

0:32:24 > 0:32:27Now, calm yourself down. Calm yourself down.

0:32:27 > 0:32:28He attacked me first.

0:32:28 > 0:32:30I understand. Now, calm yourself down. All right?

0:32:30 > 0:32:34The lad says he isn't to blame, but Jim has had enough anyway.

0:32:36 > 0:32:38Trying to get you away from the door...

0:32:38 > 0:32:40Mate, you came back several, several times.

0:32:40 > 0:32:42Come on. Come on.

0:32:42 > 0:32:45Look, mate, just go home. Have a good...

0:32:45 > 0:32:49No, they won't, mate. They're not going to touch you. Mate...

0:32:49 > 0:32:51Mate, they're not going to send you to jail.

0:32:51 > 0:32:52Give me a hand.

0:32:52 > 0:32:55Mate, they're not going to send you to jail.

0:32:55 > 0:32:59Mopping up Friday night drunks takes a disproportionate

0:32:59 > 0:33:01amount of the emergency service's time...

0:33:01 > 0:33:02Come on.

0:33:02 > 0:33:05..and costs everybody millions of pounds a year.

0:33:05 > 0:33:08Come on, get in the van. No, I've done nothing wrong. Please!

0:33:08 > 0:33:11I'm begging you. Please. I've done nothing.

0:33:16 > 0:33:19No, sorry, we're just struggling to get him in the van.

0:33:19 > 0:33:23He is in the van now. One in custody for D, please.

0:33:23 > 0:33:25He's been arrested for drunk disorderly.

0:33:25 > 0:33:27Can't have that behaviour in the town.

0:33:27 > 0:33:30So, we are going to take him back, book him in for the night.

0:33:37 > 0:33:39He's obviously well lubricated.

0:33:39 > 0:33:42Very fortunate we just happened to be driving down,

0:33:42 > 0:33:44driving down the road at the right time, really,

0:33:44 > 0:33:46and saw a bit of a scuffle going on.

0:33:46 > 0:33:49Managed to intervene before anybody got seriously hurt.

0:33:49 > 0:33:53So, that's one of the benefits of being in the town, isn't it?

0:33:53 > 0:33:56Hopefully, the journey to the station has helped

0:33:56 > 0:33:58the lad calm down.

0:33:58 > 0:33:59Come on, mate. You going to behave?

0:34:01 > 0:34:02Come on. No, I know we haven't.

0:34:02 > 0:34:05Just relax, yeah? Shh, shh, shh. Don't be silly.

0:34:05 > 0:34:07You ain't got nothing on me. I didn't do nothing.

0:34:07 > 0:34:09All I know is you were kicking off. I wasn't...

0:34:09 > 0:34:10HE SLURS HIS WORDS I know.

0:34:10 > 0:34:13He attacked me first, mate. I swear to God. All right.

0:34:13 > 0:34:14All I want to do...

0:34:14 > 0:34:18But he's going nowhere until he has seen the custody sergeant.

0:34:18 > 0:34:20No, I'm sorry, mate. I'm begging you, please.

0:34:20 > 0:34:24I'm going to speak to you when you are sober. No, I promise you...

0:34:24 > 0:34:26You got some gloves on? He's going straight down...

0:34:26 > 0:34:28Because he is so drunk and volatile,

0:34:28 > 0:34:30they're going to search him in the cell,

0:34:30 > 0:34:32but the sight of more officers...

0:34:32 > 0:34:34Come on, let's get you down to the cell. Come on.

0:34:34 > 0:34:36I'm begging you, please. Can I...?

0:34:36 > 0:34:38..just winds him up again.

0:34:38 > 0:34:39HE SLURS HIS WORDS

0:34:39 > 0:34:41Calm down. Stand up, come on.

0:34:41 > 0:34:43Stand up, come on. Come on. Get up!

0:34:43 > 0:34:46Put me down.

0:34:46 > 0:34:49Put me down now! I swear to God, I'm going to BEEP. Put me down.

0:34:49 > 0:34:54It is easy to see how so much police time is wasted dealing with

0:34:54 > 0:34:55people who have been drinking.

0:34:55 > 0:34:58Put him down this way. HE MUMBLES

0:34:58 > 0:35:01The lad will have to be restrained in order to be searched.

0:35:01 > 0:35:04All right now. Relax, Harry. Come on. I've done nothing wrong.

0:35:04 > 0:35:05You know it. Just relax.

0:35:05 > 0:35:09BLEEP! HARRY MUMBLES

0:35:09 > 0:35:11BLEEP!

0:35:11 > 0:35:14You know what they are. Tell me what they are.

0:35:14 > 0:35:15BLEEP! BLEEP!

0:35:15 > 0:35:17I've done nothing BLEEP wrong, mate.

0:35:18 > 0:35:22A night in the cell should help the lad see some sense.

0:35:23 > 0:35:27He's obviously got himself very upset, very worked up,

0:35:27 > 0:35:30so we've taken him straight down to the cell

0:35:30 > 0:35:32and, obviously, searched him in the cell.

0:35:32 > 0:35:35We will leave him there to calm down for a little bit

0:35:35 > 0:35:37and then we will have a chat with him.

0:35:38 > 0:35:42The suspect eventually pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly

0:35:42 > 0:35:45and his evening turned out to be even more

0:35:45 > 0:35:47expensive than he'd bargained for...

0:35:47 > 0:35:51after being landed with a fine and costs of ?100.

0:35:57 > 0:36:02Neighbourhood police units are made up of beat managers, PCs and PCSOs.

0:36:02 > 0:36:06But there is another very important member of the team -

0:36:06 > 0:36:08the police dog.

0:36:08 > 0:36:13So, when drugs, weapons or other evidence needs to be found,

0:36:13 > 0:36:15the dogs are sent in.

0:36:15 > 0:36:20And with noses thousands of times more sensitive than a human's,

0:36:20 > 0:36:24dogs are an invaluable tool for tracking down a suspect.

0:36:25 > 0:36:30Dog handler Mandy Gornicki has great confidence in her dog's abilities.

0:36:30 > 0:36:35Tracking is one of the things that my dog does completely

0:36:35 > 0:36:37without my help, to a certain degree.

0:36:37 > 0:36:40I have to rely 100% on him

0:36:40 > 0:36:43cos I have no idea where the person has gone.

0:36:43 > 0:36:45Mandy has been working with Argo,

0:36:45 > 0:36:49a three-year-old German shepherd, for a few months now.

0:36:49 > 0:36:51He is new to the job,

0:36:51 > 0:36:54so Mandy takes every opportunity to keep him on his toes.

0:36:56 > 0:37:00Today, Mandy is making her own scent trail for Argo to track

0:37:00 > 0:37:02while a toy plays the part of the suspect.

0:37:03 > 0:37:05The dog has no idea where I'm going.

0:37:05 > 0:37:08Yes, he's in the back of the van barking and he can see me,

0:37:08 > 0:37:10but he won't see me once I go that way.

0:37:12 > 0:37:15ARGO BARKS Argo can't wait to get sniffing.

0:37:15 > 0:37:20Getting a result all depends on the weather and the ground surface.

0:37:20 > 0:37:23And lush grass on a day like this is ideal

0:37:23 > 0:37:26for hanging onto a strong scent.

0:37:26 > 0:37:29Argo is doing well and he is getting close to the toy.

0:37:32 > 0:37:34Yeah! Good boy.

0:37:37 > 0:37:39Good boy.

0:37:39 > 0:37:41Well done.

0:37:41 > 0:37:43When the dog is tracking, they are pulling.

0:37:43 > 0:37:47I mean, so much so that you can sometimes get rope burns.

0:37:47 > 0:37:48All we do is,

0:37:48 > 0:37:50they are tracking to find a toy,

0:37:50 > 0:37:52so they can play with it at the end with you.

0:37:52 > 0:37:54So, it's all about the enjoyment of it.

0:37:55 > 0:37:58Good boy, Args. Leave.

0:37:58 > 0:38:00Good lad. You ready? Good boy.

0:38:06 > 0:38:12A few days later, Argo is tracking again, but this time for real.

0:38:12 > 0:38:15He is in Weston-super-Mare searching for a burglar

0:38:15 > 0:38:18who has just stolen a bag from a woman.

0:38:18 > 0:38:21Jon Phippen is on his way to the scene.

0:38:21 > 0:38:27We've got a report of a burglary that has just taken place.

0:38:27 > 0:38:29A male knocked on the door of address,

0:38:29 > 0:38:32a female has answered it, and then he stole her handbag.

0:38:32 > 0:38:34Officers have flooded the area.

0:38:34 > 0:38:38The woman lives in a ground-floor flat approached by stairs

0:38:38 > 0:38:40leading down from the street.

0:38:40 > 0:38:44And as it is a warm day, her front door was open

0:38:44 > 0:38:46when the suspect knocked asking for help.

0:38:49 > 0:38:50So he asked for directions.

0:38:50 > 0:38:53I walked up with him, gave him the directions,

0:38:53 > 0:38:55turned around, walked back down.

0:38:55 > 0:38:57Walked straight back in and sat down there.

0:38:57 > 0:38:59And I had my back to the door cos I picked my iPad up,

0:38:59 > 0:39:02which I was holding. I was going to do my grocery order.

0:39:02 > 0:39:04And at that point, a voice said,

0:39:04 > 0:39:06"Don't scream, I'm taking your handbag."

0:39:06 > 0:39:07Just like that.

0:39:07 > 0:39:10By the time that's registered and you've actually turned around,

0:39:10 > 0:39:13he was actually out there and running up the steps.

0:39:14 > 0:39:18While Argo tries to pick up the scent,

0:39:18 > 0:39:21Jon checks to see if the burglar has binned the handbag he stole.

0:39:22 > 0:39:25HE MUMBLES

0:39:27 > 0:39:29We've, obviously, flooded the scene initially

0:39:29 > 0:39:32in the hope that we could catch the offender nearby.

0:39:32 > 0:39:34That hasn't led us to an arrest at this point,

0:39:34 > 0:39:38so now what we are doing is starting to search around on foot,

0:39:38 > 0:39:43see if anyone is hiding or the stolen item has been discarded.

0:39:45 > 0:39:47Argo has picked up a scent trail.

0:39:49 > 0:39:52So I think, even if you're burgled and you come home and they've been

0:39:52 > 0:39:55in your house. It's the fact you're actually in it when they come in

0:39:55 > 0:39:57and speak to you, that's what's frightening.

0:39:57 > 0:39:59And that you don't hear them coming...

0:39:59 > 0:40:01I think that's what is unnerving.

0:40:01 > 0:40:04For that victim, it's a quite traumatic experience.

0:40:04 > 0:40:08So, now what we've got to do is our absolute best to try

0:40:08 > 0:40:11and catch this person because it's highly unlikely

0:40:11 > 0:40:13it's the first time they've done it.

0:40:13 > 0:40:17And bring them to swift justice, if we can.

0:40:18 > 0:40:21While Argo continues putting his nose to work,

0:40:21 > 0:40:23Jon get some good news.

0:40:23 > 0:40:26INCOHERENT MESSAGE OVER RADIO

0:40:26 > 0:40:29I did. Kyle, where did you find it?

0:40:29 > 0:40:30One of my PSA colleagues,

0:40:30 > 0:40:32who's also out doing an area search,

0:40:32 > 0:40:33has found the bag.

0:40:35 > 0:40:38The stolen handbag was discovered by neighbours

0:40:38 > 0:40:40tossed into their garden.

0:40:40 > 0:40:44Now Argo finds something -

0:40:44 > 0:40:46a purse.

0:40:46 > 0:40:48We've come from the scene of the burglary, turned left into

0:40:48 > 0:40:51this street. We came along a bit further and he has indicated

0:40:51 > 0:40:55on an item of property, which is a wallet, from a handbag

0:40:55 > 0:40:56that was stolen from the burglary.

0:40:56 > 0:41:01Argo's training has paid off.

0:41:01 > 0:41:03It is a good result, good result for the victim

0:41:03 > 0:41:06if all the bank cards are there because that saves the grief

0:41:06 > 0:41:09and the hassle of having to cancel all those kinds of things.

0:41:09 > 0:41:12Although the handbag and purse have been recovered,

0:41:12 > 0:41:15around ?30 in cash is still missing.

0:41:15 > 0:41:19And unfortunately, the thief has gone to ground.

0:41:19 > 0:41:21We've caught him going up the road.

0:41:21 > 0:41:23We've gone right, he's then changed his mind,

0:41:23 > 0:41:26crossed over the road and gone up a set of steps towards a door.

0:41:28 > 0:41:31Argo has led the police to the door of some flats.

0:41:32 > 0:41:36But alas, that's where the trail goes cold.

0:41:38 > 0:41:40I can only say that is where my dog has gone.

0:41:40 > 0:41:43I can't say someone has run in there from the burglary,

0:41:43 > 0:41:46but, you know, it's a very good job that he's done today

0:41:46 > 0:41:49because these sort of tracks this time of day are very,

0:41:49 > 0:41:52very rare and there's a lot of contamination around.

0:41:52 > 0:41:55Hard surface is very difficult tracking and it's very dry.

0:41:55 > 0:41:58It's windy. So the scent would disperse quite quickly.

0:41:58 > 0:42:02But, yeah, I'm pleased with just the wallet. That suits me.

0:42:02 > 0:42:03I'm happy with that.

0:42:03 > 0:42:05And Mandy is not the only ones who is happy.

0:42:06 > 0:42:10It was nice to know you were getting everything back, bar the cash, so...

0:42:10 > 0:42:14yeah, I thought the neighbourhood police was brilliant in Weston.

0:42:14 > 0:42:16I was quite impressed with the whole thing. Yeah.

0:42:16 > 0:42:20Now, it will be down to the crime scene investigators.

0:42:20 > 0:42:22We are going to go back to the police station,

0:42:22 > 0:42:26put in some forms to request CSI to come out

0:42:26 > 0:42:29and do some forensic work on the items we've recovered.

0:42:29 > 0:42:35And hopefully, that will lead to a positive result and a conviction.

0:42:35 > 0:42:38To date, no-one has been caught for the crime,

0:42:38 > 0:42:40but investigations will continue.

0:42:40 > 0:42:44The combined work of police, the public and Argo

0:42:44 > 0:42:47has enabled forensic evidence to be collected.

0:42:47 > 0:42:49And if the suspect slips up again,

0:42:49 > 0:42:51the neighbourhood police will be ready for him.

0:42:57 > 0:43:00The variety of crimes we've seen dealt with today bears witness

0:43:00 > 0:43:03to the skills required for the difficult

0:43:03 > 0:43:05task of neighbourhood policing.

0:43:05 > 0:43:09Thankfully, officers are always ready for whatever comes their way.

0:43:09 > 0:43:12Until next time, evening, all.

0:43:42 > 0:43:43We know we're the last thing

0:43:43 > 0:43:45between something disastrous...

0:43:47 > 0:43:48..and something hopeful.
