0:00:02 > 0:00:04This time on Police 24/7...

0:00:06 > 0:00:09PC Steph Samuel gets into the spirit of Student Freshers Week...

0:00:09 > 0:00:12I'm standing in the middle of the road with a balloon.

0:00:12 > 0:00:14I feel like I'm going to a party!

0:00:14 > 0:00:17It's weapons disposal day in Property Stores...

0:00:17 > 0:00:19I'm almost loath to put it in for destruction,

0:00:19 > 0:00:22I was just going to keep it by my desk!

0:00:22 > 0:00:26And Response Officers are called to a shooting in the capital.

0:00:26 > 0:00:28This weapon is the allegation to assault someone.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31You don't have to say anything, but it may harm your defence

0:00:31 > 0:00:34if you do not mention when questioned, something you later rely on in court.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40This is a week in the life of South Wales Police.

0:00:42 > 0:00:46Seven days of action with the cops on the street

0:00:46 > 0:00:48and the criminals they try to beat.

0:00:49 > 0:00:53This is Police 24/7.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02Oh, a dead squirrel!

0:01:02 > 0:01:05There's a lot of roadkill.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09We could get a pie out of that!

0:01:09 > 0:01:10Squirrel pie!

0:01:12 > 0:01:16Response Officers PCs Bushell and Doherty are on patrol in Cardiff.

0:01:18 > 0:01:19I bet it tastes like chicken!

0:01:19 > 0:01:22Everything tastes like chicken, doesn't it?

0:01:22 > 0:01:29Crocodile? Chicken! Snake? Chicken! Rabbit, rabbit tastes like rabbit.

0:01:30 > 0:01:34One Cardiff resident is about to get an early wake-up call from the duo.

0:01:34 > 0:01:37Hiya, mate. Sorry to bother you. What flat are you in?

0:01:37 > 0:01:42- Number two.- Number two? Do you own a Vauxhall?- Corsa?- Yeah.

0:01:42 > 0:01:44- Somebody smashed your passenger window.- Okay-dokes.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47Do you want to come and have a look? See if anything's gone and that?

0:01:47 > 0:01:48Yeah.

0:01:48 > 0:01:51- Can you see if anything's missing? - Not that I can see.

0:01:53 > 0:01:56- Got your sat nav on?- Yeah.- You have? - Everything's on there.

0:01:56 > 0:01:59That's what they'll do, they'll see that in there, it's left there,

0:01:59 > 0:02:03and they think, "Oh, we'll have a go, see what the sat nav's like."

0:02:05 > 0:02:09I thought you were a bit old for a boy racer like this now!

0:02:09 > 0:02:10HE LAUGHS

0:02:12 > 0:02:15Vehicle owner Phillip's been unlucky.

0:02:15 > 0:02:19He's become one of the ten victims of car crime a day in Cardiff.

0:02:22 > 0:02:26The police van is a mobile office where Response Officers

0:02:26 > 0:02:28await their next emergency call.

0:02:28 > 0:02:31And PC Doherty, or "Doc", as he's affectionately known,

0:02:31 > 0:02:34has seen it all.

0:02:34 > 0:02:38You go, like, from driving round rather fast and dealing with stuff,

0:02:38 > 0:02:41to stopping and dealing with nothing at all.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46But it's a young man's job these days, I think.

0:02:46 > 0:02:48Why's that?

0:02:49 > 0:02:51Because the older you get,

0:02:51 > 0:02:53the harder you find you've to start running after people

0:02:53 > 0:02:55who are a lot more sprightly than what you are,

0:02:55 > 0:02:59and don't carry as much weight! That's why I wear my vest, see?

0:02:59 > 0:03:00To keep it all tucked in!

0:03:06 > 0:03:09The capital is made up of many different districts

0:03:09 > 0:03:12and each one is served by a Neighbourhood Police team.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15Morning, everybody. Well, it's afternoon now, isn't it?

0:03:15 > 0:03:16Thanks for all attending.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19Can we just get it done and we'll have a good bit of fun.

0:03:19 > 0:03:21I do want you to tell people today...

0:03:21 > 0:03:27PC Steph Samuel's patch is Cathays, which is heavily populated by students.

0:03:27 > 0:03:32What we're trying to do is to advise people on crime prevention

0:03:32 > 0:03:34and how to make their premises more secure.

0:03:34 > 0:03:37The reason why this is being done is, as you all know,

0:03:37 > 0:03:41Cathays is one of the highest areas for burglaries

0:03:41 > 0:03:44within the South Wales area. So what we have done in the past

0:03:44 > 0:03:48is small crime walkabouts. And statistically, it shows

0:03:48 > 0:03:51that if you speak to people personally, it does work.

0:03:55 > 0:03:59Officer Samuel's crime prevention project involves both students and

0:03:59 > 0:04:04the police working together in one of South Wales's most-burgled roads.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07I'm standing in the middle of the road with a balloon.

0:04:07 > 0:04:09I feel like I'm going to a party!

0:04:11 > 0:04:14Anyone who's left their home insecure gets a little present

0:04:14 > 0:04:17of a helium-filled balloon with a message,

0:04:17 > 0:04:19"Lock it, hide it, keep it.".

0:04:21 > 0:04:25Students do get drunk, they do think that somebody

0:04:25 > 0:04:29has closed the door behind them, or closed the window.

0:04:29 > 0:04:32And it does happen. 60 percent of all the burglaries that happened

0:04:32 > 0:04:37on this street last year were due to insecure premises.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40I want it to come up a bit more, though. It's deflated a bit.

0:04:53 > 0:04:58Hidden away in a secret location is a criminal Aladdin's Cave.

0:04:58 > 0:04:59Property Stores.

0:05:02 > 0:05:04Anything seized by the police ends up here.

0:05:06 > 0:05:12And its Becky Morris's job to catalogue and care for the weird and wonderful things in it.

0:05:12 > 0:05:16On the left is where we keep the majority of all the computers.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19They might be from frauds or thefts and indecent images, things like that.

0:05:19 > 0:05:24On the top shelf, we've unfortunately got a motorcycle helmet.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27That's from a road traffic collision. And you can see,

0:05:27 > 0:05:33it's kind of leaking blood through the bag. We'd be keen to get rid of as soon as possible, obviously.

0:05:33 > 0:05:38On the bottom shelf by here, we have one of the more unusual items,

0:05:38 > 0:05:39which is a rhino horn.

0:05:40 > 0:05:45Which is quite big and so that's actually worth quite an amount of money.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49Got a drum kit on the bottom shelf which was thrown out of a window.

0:05:50 > 0:05:54Got a really nice flat-screen TV that's been stolen

0:05:54 > 0:05:57and there's a gentleman who thinks that it's his.

0:05:57 > 0:06:00But unfortunately, because they've taken all the serial numbers off,

0:06:00 > 0:06:03and he hasn't put his address or anything on it,

0:06:03 > 0:06:06it's very hard to prove that it's his. So it's always worth marking your property.

0:06:08 > 0:06:12Becky has spent the last six years looking after criminal evidence for the force.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15Even when I applied for the job, it wasn't overly clear

0:06:15 > 0:06:17from the job description what it was going to entail.

0:06:17 > 0:06:19I kind of had images, you know, from the movies,

0:06:19 > 0:06:24where there's some little old man in a basement with a cage around him!

0:06:24 > 0:06:26Which is essentially what we are!

0:06:30 > 0:06:33'Hello, Ambulance.'

0:06:33 > 0:06:36'Hello, could we have your assistance to gain entry for us, please?

0:06:36 > 0:06:39'We've got a male who's called us to say that he can't breathe.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41'The crew's saying they can't get in.'

0:06:41 > 0:06:44'OK, then. I'll pass that on to them now.'

0:06:44 > 0:06:45SIREN BLARES

0:06:45 > 0:06:49Responding to this emergency call are Officers Bushell and Doherty.

0:06:56 > 0:06:58It's only the one door we've got to go through.

0:06:58 > 0:06:59Police. Can you open the door?

0:06:59 > 0:07:02If Doc suspects that somebody's life is in danger,

0:07:02 > 0:07:04there is only one thing to do...

0:07:06 > 0:07:08Use the big red key.

0:07:09 > 0:07:11Now the paramedics can gain entry.

0:07:14 > 0:07:15Hello?

0:07:17 > 0:07:19Hello?

0:07:20 > 0:07:24But the man who called for an ambulance is nowhere to be found.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27Door's broke. Yeah, he's in need of assistance, he can't breathe.

0:07:27 > 0:07:28All right, lovely.

0:07:28 > 0:07:32He's been assaulted earlier on today and we thought he'd still be here.

0:07:32 > 0:07:35Usually, it's basically either attention or

0:07:35 > 0:07:38they just need to speak to somebody, that's all.

0:07:38 > 0:07:41Broke it. I fixed that up, best I can. Hopefully, it should lock.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47As we said, we've checked the premises and he's not there.

0:07:49 > 0:07:53With no-one at home, there's not much a policeman can do,

0:07:53 > 0:07:55so it's on to the next job.

0:08:00 > 0:08:04That's great. How's it going? "How's it going?!"

0:08:04 > 0:08:07On the streets of Cathays, PC Samuel's operation

0:08:07 > 0:08:08is well under way.

0:08:12 > 0:08:16With many students living in one property, this area is full

0:08:16 > 0:08:18of rich pickings for burglars.

0:08:18 > 0:08:21Why would you go to one house where there may be one laptop,

0:08:21 > 0:08:27one TV, whereas here, you might have eight or nine or ten?

0:08:28 > 0:08:32And down the road is exactly what Officer Samuel is trying to prevent.

0:08:33 > 0:08:37This student house has just been burgled.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40- So they've forced this door, have they?- Yes. We fixed it,

0:08:40 > 0:08:44- but you can see it's been broken. - Yeah. Yeah.

0:08:44 > 0:08:49- Look how weird that is.- Yeah. Yeah. It's a bit odd that they've opened a tin of sardines!

0:08:50 > 0:08:53Alex Filmer is a Crime Scene Investigator.

0:08:53 > 0:08:57He's on the prowl for prints and DNA.

0:08:57 > 0:09:01- So they've taken my phone out of there. That little black bit.- OK.

0:09:01 > 0:09:06- And jewellery from there.- OK. I'll crack on, then.- OK.

0:09:06 > 0:09:11For student Nia, the break-in has been unwelcome news.

0:09:11 > 0:09:14The neighbours noticed that my door was broken.

0:09:14 > 0:09:16And then the police went and rung me,

0:09:16 > 0:09:18because I was back at home at the time.

0:09:18 > 0:09:23And they found, like, a casual tin of sardines and my place literally trashed, basically.

0:09:23 > 0:09:24So, yeah.

0:09:24 > 0:09:28Could there be a cat burglar on the loose?

0:09:28 > 0:09:30Maybe Alex should be dusting for paw prints!

0:09:30 > 0:09:33There's nothing on there, unfortunately.

0:09:33 > 0:09:40I'll do the ring-pull part of it, if I can get it off, for DNA.

0:09:40 > 0:09:45For CSI guys like Alex, there's one thing he's definitely looking for.

0:09:46 > 0:09:50Mostly it's blood we kind of hope for. Sometimes they cut themselves.

0:09:50 > 0:09:55So hopefully, if they leave blood, that makes our job easier.

0:09:55 > 0:10:00And if they're on the DNA database, it's case closed, really.

0:10:02 > 0:10:06Obviously, doing this job, you hear and see a lot of things that aren't very nice.

0:10:06 > 0:10:11And you do question, like, humanity and what goes through

0:10:11 > 0:10:14people's minds when they're obviously doing these things.

0:10:16 > 0:10:19This is my fourth time that I've been burgled. Yeah.

0:10:19 > 0:10:23And I've lived in four different places, it's ridiculous.

0:10:23 > 0:10:25But it's because it's the Cathays area. I think that's why.

0:10:25 > 0:10:29I need to get out of the student area, to be honest.

0:10:29 > 0:10:33And Alex is making a move too. He's off to process his handiwork.

0:10:33 > 0:10:37It's got some potential for DNA with the sardine tin.

0:10:37 > 0:10:39So, hopefully, it will come back with something.

0:10:48 > 0:10:54In Property Stores, Becky keeps a keen eye on any officers booking in evidence.

0:10:54 > 0:10:57Have you got the phone and the...?

0:10:57 > 0:11:01Yeah, I've kept those, because I've had the phone finger-printed.

0:11:01 > 0:11:04There are strict protocols and procedures to be followed.

0:11:07 > 0:11:14And it's the officers booking in out of hours that are giving Becky a bit of a headache.

0:11:14 > 0:11:19The first thing I'm spotting as a Property Officer is that the items haven't been sealed.

0:11:19 > 0:11:21You need to seal them so we can prove the continuity on them.

0:11:21 > 0:11:23So I'm not going to touch them too much.

0:11:23 > 0:11:28And we should have a yellow label, which shows where they were seized.

0:11:28 > 0:11:30So there's two things there that are wrong.

0:11:30 > 0:11:33So I'm not going to take them into the store, I'm going to email the officer.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36This item's still out in the holding area because it was used

0:11:36 > 0:11:41as part of an assault and I think it was taken for forensic evidence.

0:11:41 > 0:11:44But it's not been packaged at all or sealed.

0:11:44 > 0:11:46So then Scenes of Crime aren't going to take it,

0:11:46 > 0:11:48because it could have been handled by people.

0:11:48 > 0:11:50Sue and I have sent out an email

0:11:50 > 0:11:52and we've made sure we're not touching it at all.

0:11:52 > 0:11:54And we're not getting our DNA or fingerprints on it.

0:11:54 > 0:11:57But it does show the importance of making sure everything's

0:11:57 > 0:12:00properly done when it comes in the store.

0:12:00 > 0:12:04Becky's attention to detail benefits the whole of the force.

0:12:04 > 0:12:06I'm a bit picky on it, but then,

0:12:06 > 0:12:08it's not going to be me that has to stand up in court.

0:12:08 > 0:12:11So it's for their own good, really.

0:12:11 > 0:12:15Some people say, "Oh, I come to work to get away from the wife!"

0:12:15 > 0:12:17Life's rough!

0:12:24 > 0:12:25If you guys go in that one,

0:12:25 > 0:12:30and then if Dave can go into that one after that, that would be brill.

0:12:30 > 0:12:33Hello. I'm sorry to trouble you. Just to let you know...

0:12:33 > 0:12:36Officer Samuel's crime prevention operation is in full swing.

0:12:38 > 0:12:42Having worked this patch for four years, she knows it's sometimes

0:12:42 > 0:12:47a delicate relationship between students and local residents.

0:12:47 > 0:12:49Morning! No, it's afternoon now, isn't it?

0:12:49 > 0:12:50Good morning.

0:12:50 > 0:12:52You're going to ask what we're doing, aren't you?

0:12:52 > 0:12:55No, what I'm going to ask is why on earth...?

0:12:56 > 0:13:01- Don't be negative. - This area is not their campus.

0:13:01 > 0:13:06We've lived here all our lives. Yeah? Are you with me in that?

0:13:06 > 0:13:09- I am totally with you.- You cannot come out to a club and say,

0:13:09 > 0:13:13"We are on campus now and we can create holy havoc

0:13:13 > 0:13:16"up and down the roads and streets of Cardiff

0:13:16 > 0:13:18"and keep everybody awake at night."

0:13:18 > 0:13:22Irrespective of whether they've got children, youngsters,

0:13:22 > 0:13:25work in the morning. They haven't got work in the morning.

0:13:25 > 0:13:29They can lie in bed until ten, eleven, twelve or one o'clock in the morning.

0:13:29 > 0:13:32And where on earth they get the money from, I don't know.

0:13:32 > 0:13:34I'm not going to say I'm going to advocate it,

0:13:34 > 0:13:37it's never going to stop. You're not going to get rid of them.

0:13:37 > 0:13:40- It's never going to happen. - It's never going to stop, you say?

0:13:40 > 0:13:42What I'm saying is you're never going to get rid of the students.

0:13:42 > 0:13:47They're here to stay. What we need to do is work together with them.

0:13:49 > 0:13:52- That's really bad. Horrendous. - Shocking.

0:13:52 > 0:13:55And Steph's team are doing that very thing,

0:13:55 > 0:13:57to help keep students' belongings safe.

0:13:57 > 0:14:00- So, it's a name, and then...? - Name and postcode.

0:14:00 > 0:14:02Something so simple, but...

0:14:02 > 0:14:04Yeah, something simple, but that is really effective.

0:14:04 > 0:14:07And it is something that deters a lot of criminals.

0:14:07 > 0:14:10Thank you very much for that. That's very helpful. Thank you for your time.

0:14:10 > 0:14:14Hopefully, student Iolo's laptop is safe and sound.

0:14:16 > 0:14:21And PC Samuel's not giving up on persuading Anthony to work with her.

0:14:21 > 0:14:23What I'm asking you to do is, I'm not going to sit here

0:14:23 > 0:14:25and argue with you and say you're wrong or anything,

0:14:25 > 0:14:28- because I know you're dead right in what you're saying.- Thank you.

0:14:28 > 0:14:31- But I want you to attend that meeting.- I'll be there.

0:14:31 > 0:14:34You'd better be there! Because it is people like you,

0:14:34 > 0:14:36Anthony, that I need.

0:14:39 > 0:14:40'South Wales Police.'

0:14:40 > 0:14:42'Oh, hi, can I report an incident, please?'

0:14:42 > 0:14:43'Yeah, what's happened?'

0:14:43 > 0:14:46'I'm an off-duty police officer, I've just been shot at

0:14:46 > 0:14:49'by some sort of pellet gun on Salisbury Road.

0:14:49 > 0:14:51'We've identified where they're shooting from as well.'

0:14:54 > 0:14:58Response officers John Manders and Alex Smith are on their way.

0:15:00 > 0:15:03They're checking in with the off duty officers who were shot at

0:15:03 > 0:15:07and who have already caught the culprits of the crime.

0:15:12 > 0:15:15- So we're in with the gang.- OK.

0:15:15 > 0:15:17So we've knocked the door, come in,

0:15:17 > 0:15:20- they've showed us the gun which was in their cupboard.- OK.

0:15:20 > 0:15:22This gentleman's admitted having drugs in his room.

0:15:22 > 0:15:25He's taken me upstairs and I recovered a small bit of cannabis.

0:15:25 > 0:15:27OK, and that's the weapon there?

0:15:27 > 0:15:30With this weapon, it's the allegation to assault someone.

0:15:30 > 0:15:35HE CAUTIONS THEM

0:15:35 > 0:15:38Anything you do say may be given in evidence. Do you understand that?

0:15:38 > 0:15:40- I understand, yes. - Do you understand?- Yeah.- OK.

0:15:40 > 0:15:43- So anything you say now can be used against you, got it?- Yeah.- OK, cool.

0:15:43 > 0:15:47- Who owns this?- Me, that's mine. - That's yours, is it?- Yes.- OK.

0:15:47 > 0:15:49Been in trouble before, boys?

0:15:49 > 0:15:52- Um, never before, no. - Mate, what's your name?

0:15:52 > 0:15:55- Are you students?- We are students, yes.- You're a million miles away.

0:15:55 > 0:15:59For these drama students, it seems like a prank has gone very wrong.

0:15:59 > 0:16:02What they've done, though, is really, really dangerous.

0:16:02 > 0:16:04The allegation is they fired a BB gun,

0:16:04 > 0:16:08which is really powerful, er, at people using the cash point,

0:16:08 > 0:16:12so they've fired it from that first-floor flat.

0:16:12 > 0:16:15Do you want to get the bag, John? We'll put them in together.

0:16:15 > 0:16:18This shouldn't be doing it, it's as simple as that. It's dangerous.

0:16:18 > 0:16:20There just happened to be a police officer, who'll report it.

0:16:20 > 0:16:23She was hurt, I seen the mark on her neck, so, er,

0:16:23 > 0:16:27- it's an assault, so, you know. - We're off.- OK, Carrick Bay.

0:16:29 > 0:16:33The performance is over for these two students

0:16:33 > 0:16:35with a trip to the police station.

0:16:35 > 0:16:37They were both cautioned for assault

0:16:37 > 0:16:40and one of them for cannabis possession.

0:16:47 > 0:16:50Property office, Becky speaking.

0:16:50 > 0:16:55I'm going out on a gun run shortly, but I'll be back this afternoon.

0:16:55 > 0:16:59When BB guns or other weapons are used in crimes,

0:16:59 > 0:17:02they often end up in the police property store.

0:17:02 > 0:17:05Today, Becky's gathering together guns and knives

0:17:05 > 0:17:07where the cases have been closed.

0:17:10 > 0:17:12They're going to be destroyed,

0:17:12 > 0:17:15so that they can never get back into the hands of criminals.

0:17:15 > 0:17:19Two times CS sprays, so I've got both of those.

0:17:19 > 0:17:22It's surprising how many weapons there are

0:17:22 > 0:17:24and how many are sort of out on the street.

0:17:24 > 0:17:27The number that come in, just subject of enquiry,

0:17:27 > 0:17:31is so many compared to what you'd expect for somewhere like Cardiff.

0:17:31 > 0:17:33It's not London and it's not America.

0:17:33 > 0:17:37It's really quite scary. Because I work for South Wales Police,

0:17:37 > 0:17:40I know that we're doing the best job, so...

0:17:40 > 0:17:43and at least I know that all of these are in my store

0:17:43 > 0:17:44and not in somebody's hands.

0:17:44 > 0:17:50With around 8,000 items on the shelves and barely any room left,

0:17:50 > 0:17:52it's important to de-clutter.

0:17:52 > 0:17:55So, every other month, a gun run takes place.

0:17:55 > 0:18:00Getting rid of stuff always makes me happy

0:18:00 > 0:18:03and, um, a trip out of the office is always a bonus as well.

0:18:03 > 0:18:04I don't get out often.

0:18:07 > 0:18:08So we've got a box inside the van

0:18:08 > 0:18:12for keeping everything secure while we're in transit,

0:18:12 > 0:18:17just in case anything were to happen en route.

0:18:17 > 0:18:20The amount of ammo, we need to keep it separately from the weapons,

0:18:20 > 0:18:23so if we were to get hit and somebody take the weapons,

0:18:23 > 0:18:25they can't get the ammo as well.

0:18:30 > 0:18:35Er, this is my favourite weapon for destruction this month.

0:18:35 > 0:18:38And I'm almost loath to put it in for destruction. I was just

0:18:38 > 0:18:41going to keep it by my desk. SHE LAUGHS

0:18:44 > 0:18:49The weapons will be taken to a secret location to be crushed.

0:18:51 > 0:18:54ON RADIO: 'Just been flagged down by a member of the public

0:18:54 > 0:18:56'regarding some lady has fallen on a bus,

0:19:10 > 0:19:13Right, um, she didn't say anything till she got here.

0:19:13 > 0:19:16I asked her if she was all right. She said yes.

0:19:16 > 0:19:20- OK.- I asked her if she wanted assistance. She said no.- Right.

0:19:20 > 0:19:23I've asked her, "Do you want my name and address?" "No."

0:19:23 > 0:19:25- I said, "Can I have your name and address?" "No."- OK.

0:19:25 > 0:19:27People in there know her.

0:19:30 > 0:19:34The lady's name is Lyz, and she's recently out of hospital.

0:19:34 > 0:19:36She's suffered some sort of injury,

0:19:36 > 0:19:40according to the card she's shown us, where she's had a brain injury,

0:19:40 > 0:19:42um, she's indicated to us as well

0:19:42 > 0:19:45that she's had a heart attack previously.

0:19:45 > 0:19:46Yeah, sorry to be a nag.

0:19:46 > 0:19:50Have you got an ET for the ambulance or paramedics?

0:19:50 > 0:19:54- Could turn up...hour?- Yeah. - What have we got, an hour?

0:19:54 > 0:19:56That is the problem we've got.

0:19:56 > 0:19:59We don't know how long an ambulance is going to be,

0:19:59 > 0:20:01so we can take you up to hospital. INAUDIBLE RESPONSE

0:20:01 > 0:20:04All right? So you finish your coffee

0:20:04 > 0:20:07- and we'll take you up to hospital, OK?- OK.

0:20:11 > 0:20:13All right?

0:20:13 > 0:20:19- Right, big step now.- OK.- OK, do you want to sit in this one?- Yeah.- OK?

0:20:22 > 0:20:25For response officers Doc and Bushell,

0:20:25 > 0:20:27the job isn't just about catching criminals.

0:20:28 > 0:20:32It's also about keeping people like Lyz safe.

0:20:33 > 0:20:36All part of the job, the service we provide.

0:20:38 > 0:20:39Lovely lady.

0:20:48 > 0:20:51When most of us have been tucked up in bed for hours,

0:20:51 > 0:20:55Cardiff's students are just thinking about heading home

0:20:55 > 0:20:57and some make use of the safe bus.

0:20:59 > 0:21:02EVERYONE CHATTERS

0:21:02 > 0:21:04I'm like a little kid sitting here.

0:21:04 > 0:21:06SHE LAUGHS

0:21:06 > 0:21:08PC Steph Samuel was one of the brains

0:21:08 > 0:21:10behind the idea of a student safe bus,

0:21:10 > 0:21:13in partnership with Cardiff University.

0:21:15 > 0:21:17At night, it trawls the streets,

0:21:17 > 0:21:21transporting any vulnerable students safely home.

0:21:21 > 0:21:25- Just getting a lift home free, mind. - This is better than a taxi, innit?

0:21:25 > 0:21:28We had quite a high spate of robberies, um,

0:21:28 > 0:21:32and, um, sexual assaults, so it was trying to think of a way

0:21:32 > 0:21:36in which we can take the vulnerable people off the streets.

0:21:36 > 0:21:38Can you put the sirens on?

0:21:38 > 0:21:40LAUGHTER AND CHATTER

0:21:40 > 0:21:44And, obviously, the very nature of the population here again,

0:21:44 > 0:21:47being students, um, they do get into states which put them

0:21:47 > 0:21:50into situations that maybe they wouldn't ordinarily be in.

0:21:50 > 0:21:54- We're well behaved there. - All right, OK, we're here.

0:21:54 > 0:21:56- Let's go to their house!- No...

0:21:59 > 0:22:02for near on 14 years, um,

0:22:02 > 0:22:05but you can never make a massive difference,

0:22:05 > 0:22:10because you literally just go and deal with what you got to deal with

0:22:10 > 0:22:14and move away, whereas in the role, with a neighbourhood role,

0:22:14 > 0:22:15you can make a difference.
