0:01:49 > 0:01:50Hello, darling.

0:01:50 > 0:01:53So for me to do this now, where all I do all day is talk to people,

0:01:53 > 0:01:57I think that, in itself, is a brilliant job.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00Plus, I like being in the high visibility side of things, as well.

0:02:02 > 0:02:06It's nice to have the old people grabbing you by the wrist,

0:02:06 > 0:02:09telling you how nice it is to see a policeman on the street.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12They don't realise how strong they are, some of them!

0:02:12 > 0:02:13Let's have a look round here.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22Oops, don't panic yet, you don't know how much trouble you're in.

0:02:22 > 0:02:24- Is it just cannabis?- Yeah.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26- How old are you?- I'm 18.

0:02:26 > 0:02:28You're 18, are you?

0:02:32 > 0:02:36You never had nothing for cannabis or for any drug before? OK.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39What we'll do, as soon as they come back with previous,

0:02:39 > 0:02:41- if you've got nothing for drugs... - A street warning.

0:02:41 > 0:02:44- A street warning. You've never had one of those before?- Nope.

0:02:44 > 0:02:46You can't have two of those, either.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49I just can't believe I've been caught, like. I didn't even smoke one!

0:02:49 > 0:02:53You haven't had a chance to have a puff of it and it's taken off you.

0:02:54 > 0:02:58This is the same as being arrested, it is a conviction.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01It will show you've been done for possession on this occasion

0:03:01 > 0:03:03and not been arrested and taken to the station.

0:03:03 > 0:03:05All right, mate. OK?

0:03:05 > 0:03:07Cheers, Rhys. Enjoy the sunshine.

0:03:07 > 0:03:09All right. Take care. Ta-ra.

0:03:10 > 0:03:12Cheers, Rhys.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17Policing has evolved over the years,

0:03:18 > 0:03:20as the nature of crime changes.

0:03:23 > 0:03:27In Cardiff, a team are on their way to seize a suspected dangerous dog,

0:03:27 > 0:03:32under the expert supervision of Dog Legislation Officer, Walter Pennell.

0:03:34 > 0:03:37A lot of the time, these people buy these dogs,

0:03:37 > 0:03:40thinking they're Staffordshire bull terriers.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43And all of a sudden, they grow up into these pit bull-type dogs.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46Like what we're doing today, we execute warrants

0:03:46 > 0:03:49to seize them and for me to examine them.

0:03:51 > 0:03:55Already this year, Officer Pennell has removed over 100 dogs

0:03:55 > 0:03:57from homes in South Wales.

0:03:57 > 0:04:01And it's not easy taking away the family pet.

0:04:01 > 0:04:04I've got a warrant here, under the Dangerous Dogs Act.

0:04:04 > 0:04:05Is your mum here at the moment?

0:04:05 > 0:04:09We've got to take the dog, because it's possibly a prohibited dog,

0:04:09 > 0:04:10under the Dangerous Dogs Act.

0:04:10 > 0:04:13- Does that look like a pit bull? - Yes, it does.

0:04:13 > 0:04:15- Does it look like a dangerous dog to you?- It does, actually.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18- Look, you're all here... - Chill out, mate.

0:04:18 > 0:04:20We've come for the dog.

0:04:20 > 0:04:22We've come for the dog.

0:04:22 > 0:04:25Wait there. You said to me it was a Staff cross.

0:04:25 > 0:04:28- What do you think a Staff cross is? - What do you mean? A Staff bullmastiff.

0:04:28 > 0:04:31A Staff crossed with another dog, mate, is a type pit bull.

0:04:31 > 0:04:33Trying to take a dog that's friendly with everyone.

0:04:33 > 0:04:38All right, shut up. Shut your mouth. You're making it worse, Shut up!

0:04:38 > 0:04:41Mum of the house has returned in the nick of time.

0:04:43 > 0:04:48And PC Pennell takes the opportunity to explain why the dog is being removed.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51We've seized the dog, as a suspected pit bull-type dog.

0:04:51 > 0:04:55Therefore, he needs to be taken away to our secure kennels,

0:04:55 > 0:04:58so I can formally carry out an examination on him.

0:04:58 > 0:05:02Obviously, your boy there's a bit upset, agitated.

0:05:02 > 0:05:06Can you have a word with him? Mum's always the best to have a word.

0:05:06 > 0:05:10- I'm sure you can handle him. - I'll try.- OK.

0:05:10 > 0:05:12- Good lad, there you are.- Good boy.

0:05:17 > 0:05:21Sometimes it's a bird's eye view that's required to solve a crime.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27Whisky Oscar Nine Nine is the police eye in the sky.

0:05:28 > 0:05:32- OK, log number of the last one.- Yeah.

0:05:32 > 0:05:36On duty today are police observers, PC Peter Edwards and Nick Kane.

0:05:38 > 0:05:40Air Support is a close knit team,

0:05:40 > 0:05:44and Officer Kane has been part of the family for 17 years.

0:05:44 > 0:05:48As this is a converted house, it does feel like a second home.

0:05:48 > 0:05:54You know, and we keep everything, our own fridge, our own food,

0:05:54 > 0:05:58and everything here is very much like a home, with a big hobby

0:05:58 > 0:06:00that occupies most of your time.

0:06:06 > 0:06:09Last year, The South and East Wales Air Support Unit

0:06:09 > 0:06:11attended almost 2,000 incidents...

0:06:13 > 0:06:16from tracking down offenders, to missing persons.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19We are just like a CCTV camera in the air.

0:06:19 > 0:06:21If you wanted to search an open area for somebody,

0:06:21 > 0:06:23a helicopter's an ideal resource.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33Fine to Penarth west. Any further updates?

0:06:33 > 0:06:38Today's shout is to Penarth, on the hunt for a wanted person.

0:06:38 > 0:06:41Do you think he would have kept running onto the cliff path

0:06:41 > 0:06:44or do you think he's going to be hiding around there somewhere?

0:06:44 > 0:06:47RADIO: I think he's going to be hiding, from what my colleague said.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50'He's probably in a garden somewhere - or he was, at least.'

0:06:50 > 0:06:53OK, if you can hold that position, I'll have a search of the gardens

0:06:53 > 0:06:55and we'll make a lot of noise.

0:06:55 > 0:06:58If somebody sees something unusual, hopefully, they'll ring it in.

0:06:59 > 0:07:02Can you see any place for our suspect?

0:07:02 > 0:07:06Despite making a lot of noise in the sky, the crew spot nothing.

0:07:07 > 0:07:09It's like looking for a needle in a haystack.

0:07:11 > 0:07:13It's frustrating for all the team.

0:07:14 > 0:07:16It's like pulling teeth, this one.

0:07:18 > 0:07:22- OK, guys, are you happy if I head home?- Definitely.- OK.

0:07:23 > 0:07:25RADIO: That's great. Thanks for the assistance. Out.

0:07:27 > 0:07:30The helicops never know when the next shout will come

0:07:30 > 0:07:32and that's part of the job's appeal for Officer Kane.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37The opportunity come to go on air support and I thought it was a great police job.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40Before I was on traffic, on the motorbikes,

0:07:40 > 0:07:45which was great, but I was just dealing with traffic, traffic matters.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47But now I've got a full remit.

0:07:47 > 0:07:49I deal with every police aspect of policing.

0:07:49 > 0:07:51That was the attraction for me.

0:07:59 > 0:08:01It's market day in Pontypridd.

0:08:01 > 0:08:04Morning, girls. All right? How are we? All right?

0:08:06 > 0:08:09- Morning.- How are you, sir? - I'm all right, how are you?

0:08:09 > 0:08:12And time for PC Price to carry out some crime prevention.

0:08:14 > 0:08:16At night time, leave your till drawer open, leave it empty

0:08:16 > 0:08:19and obviously the doors locked.

0:08:19 > 0:08:22They won't damage the till trying to get in, anyway.

0:08:22 > 0:08:26Proactive policing has helped Colin make the town feel safer.

0:08:26 > 0:08:27Are you OK?

0:08:27 > 0:08:29You being a good boy?

0:08:29 > 0:08:32- Yeah!- Yeah? Good boy.

0:08:32 > 0:08:35But there is one hot spot he's desperate to clear up.

0:08:38 > 0:08:41This is the area where we've got a few drug problems.

0:08:41 > 0:08:44I mean, there's paraphernalia here, on the floor.

0:08:45 > 0:08:47That's a syringe wrapper.

0:08:47 > 0:08:50The orange tip there is off a syringe.

0:08:50 > 0:08:53This is before we get down... A drug packet.

0:08:56 > 0:08:58Yeah, it's powder residue.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01I would imagine that's probably cocaine or amphet.

0:09:03 > 0:09:07One of my personal things, being a dad and worried about the kids

0:09:07 > 0:09:12is, when they've injected, they'll discard needles down the banking, down here.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15The channel is actually a flood channel for the river

0:09:15 > 0:09:18and, last week, with all the heavy rain, the needles were washed down.

0:09:18 > 0:09:22Where they go under the bridge down there, they come out to Ynysangharad Park,

0:09:22 > 0:09:25which, in the summer, is packed.

0:09:25 > 0:09:27Young kids use, what we call, the beach.

0:09:27 > 0:09:31They go down paddling and, unfortunately, we are looking at

0:09:31 > 0:09:34possible syringes being down on the beach area, washed up from here.

0:09:34 > 0:09:38What I'd like to do with the council is to block this area off

0:09:38 > 0:09:42at that end and at this end, so this whole area can be sterilised

0:09:42 > 0:09:45and we can, not get rid of the drug problem,

0:09:45 > 0:09:48but at least we can force them away from the town centre

0:09:48 > 0:09:50and tidy this place up a bit.

0:10:01 > 0:10:05Hiya, love. It's the police. Can you come down a sec? Nothing to worry about.

0:10:05 > 0:10:08Dog Legislation Officer Walter Pennell has received intelligence

0:10:08 > 0:10:11about another potential pit bull-type dog.

0:10:11 > 0:10:14Hiya, love. Sorry to bother you. We didn't wake you up?

0:10:14 > 0:10:17He and PC Hicks have a warrant to take the animal today,

0:10:17 > 0:10:20even though the legal owner is not at home.

0:10:20 > 0:10:24What I've got here is a warrant, OK, to enter the address.

0:10:24 > 0:10:27- For what?- I'll explain that to you once we come inside, OK.

0:10:27 > 0:10:29- All right?- He's not a pit bull.

0:10:29 > 0:10:33He's got characteristics of a pit bull-type dog, all right.

0:10:33 > 0:10:37What we need to do is take him away for me to examine him formally.

0:10:37 > 0:10:42And then, once I've decided what he is, I'll let you know

0:10:42 > 0:10:44and we'll take it from there, my love.

0:10:44 > 0:10:46I don't want you taking my dog.

0:10:46 > 0:10:50- Unfortunately...- He's not a dangerous dog. Do I get him back?

0:10:50 > 0:10:53I'll explain that to you in a moment, all right.

0:10:53 > 0:10:55Don't get upset over it now.

0:10:55 > 0:10:58I wouldn't like it if someone came into my house and took my pet.

0:10:58 > 0:11:01- They're my babies. - Of course they are.

0:11:01 > 0:11:04People get upset when they have their dogs taken.

0:11:08 > 0:11:10It's like a death in the family, I suppose,

0:11:10 > 0:11:12when a dog is taken away from them.

0:11:12 > 0:11:15You take the dog out of the home environment

0:11:15 > 0:11:18and it leaves a bit of a void.

0:11:18 > 0:11:21Up, come on, then. Good lad. Good boy.

0:11:21 > 0:11:23- You will look after him, won't you?- Look...

0:11:25 > 0:11:28A policeman's promise, if that's of any good anymore.

0:11:28 > 0:11:32- OK.- Yeah? Our kennel manager is brilliant with them.

0:11:32 > 0:11:34He treats them like his own dogs.

0:11:35 > 0:11:39Both the seized animals will be taken away to a secret location,

0:11:39 > 0:11:44where PC Pennell will decide if they are illegal pit bull type dogs.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55The helicops have just received an urgent call.

0:11:56 > 0:11:59A man has been reported missing.

0:11:59 > 0:12:02He's young and vulnerable and could be in danger.

0:12:03 > 0:12:05According to Jeff, he's slight build...

0:12:06 > 0:12:09Response police are already on the ground looking for him.

0:12:09 > 0:12:11The lower crossing, yeah?

0:12:11 > 0:12:14But in the dark, they need the helicopter's night vision camera

0:12:14 > 0:12:16to assist in their search.

0:12:17 > 0:12:19..those trees is the railway line.

0:12:19 > 0:12:22We want to be going down to the right, to look for him.

0:12:22 > 0:12:25November Lima Six Five to Whisky Oscar Nine Nine.

0:12:25 > 0:12:29Six Five, I think if we can confirm we've only got the one person on the railway.

0:12:29 > 0:12:32Have we got any police officers on the railway?

0:12:32 > 0:12:33We've got somebody in sight now.

0:12:33 > 0:12:36There's two Kilo Delta units.

0:12:36 > 0:12:38There's one male, who is chasing after the boy,

0:12:38 > 0:12:40who wanted to harm himself,

0:12:40 > 0:12:43and a member of the public now's just come onto the line, as well.

0:12:43 > 0:12:45RADIO: Roger. Over.

0:12:45 > 0:12:47Whisky Oscar Nine Nine, it's quite urgent.

0:12:47 > 0:12:50We've got somebody on the railway.

0:12:50 > 0:12:53The helicops need to work out who is who on the railway line

0:12:53 > 0:12:55and with the missing person's family joining in the search,

0:12:55 > 0:13:00the situation is becoming confusing and dangerous.

0:13:00 > 0:13:03No, I'm looking off thermal.

0:13:03 > 0:13:06Just up ahead of you there is a single person.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09- Can you confirm you can see him. - Yes, I can.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12I believe that's the other son, who's looking for the one who's missing. Over.

0:13:12 > 0:13:16Can you catch up with him and get him out of there?

0:13:16 > 0:13:20Nine Nine, can you confirm you're getting our pictures, please,

0:13:20 > 0:13:22just in case a train comes along?

0:13:30 > 0:13:34On a Saturday night, town becomes a honey pot

0:13:34 > 0:13:39for Pontypridd party people, as they come out to play.

0:13:39 > 0:13:41SHOUTS

0:13:43 > 0:13:45Policing the night-time economy

0:13:45 > 0:13:48is part of the Neighbourhood Team's job.

0:13:48 > 0:13:51The CCTV tells me every weekend, on the night, we do have people up there

0:13:51 > 0:13:53using recreational drugs.

0:13:53 > 0:13:56Officer Colin Price is leading tonight's drugs crackdown

0:13:56 > 0:14:00and PC Jonathan Handy will be his patrolling partner.

0:14:03 > 0:14:05SHOUTS

0:14:05 > 0:14:08- Do you know what I mean? - OK. All right, OK, OK.

0:14:08 > 0:14:10- Do you want to calm down? - It's her birthday.

0:14:10 > 0:14:14- I know that but that's unacceptable. - Just a bit too much, we're going now.

0:14:14 > 0:14:16There's a completely different vibe tonight,

0:14:16 > 0:14:18a different feeling in the air.

0:14:18 > 0:14:21Whether it's drink or drugs fuelled, people act slightly differently,

0:14:21 > 0:14:24so the atmosphere from the normal day job is flipped on its head.

0:14:27 > 0:14:31It's not long before the CCTV cameras give the officers a tip off.

0:14:32 > 0:14:35Right, guys. What's happened?

0:14:35 > 0:14:38You've just been filmed by CCTV snorting, what I believe to be,

0:14:38 > 0:14:40a white powder behind Tesco's.

0:14:40 > 0:14:42On the basis of what they've just told us,

0:14:42 > 0:14:45it gives us grounds to search you under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

0:14:45 > 0:14:48- Keep still.- Keep hold of it, because I don't want to break it.

0:14:48 > 0:14:51- So what was it? Cocaine?- Yeah, yeah.

0:14:51 > 0:14:54Is there any more on you? Let's have a look, then.

0:14:56 > 0:14:59So, you work with school children and you're snorting cocaine?

0:14:59 > 0:15:03Not exactly the role model we want, is it?

0:15:03 > 0:15:07Be very grateful I found nothing on you, because the impact that would have had

0:15:07 > 0:15:10on your job and your lifestyle would have been massive.

0:15:10 > 0:15:11I am sorry.

0:15:11 > 0:15:14They haven't got any more on them. It was only the one bag they have.

0:15:14 > 0:15:17As far as we're concerned, there's nothing we can do.

0:15:17 > 0:15:20They're not in possession of the drug although they've inhaled the drug.

0:15:24 > 0:15:27The neighbourhood officers are on the lookout

0:15:27 > 0:15:31for any drunken behaviour or fights that may happen at kicking-out time.

0:15:31 > 0:15:33Get it, get it.

0:15:33 > 0:15:34No!

0:15:38 > 0:15:42And for PC Price, Saturday night is always a sobering experience.

0:15:43 > 0:15:47Well, my oldest is nearly 17 and I'm absolutely petrified.

0:15:48 > 0:15:51You know, the age of some of these out tonight is...

0:15:51 > 0:15:53My daughter looks older than them.

0:15:55 > 0:15:57Hey! Put that away.

0:15:57 > 0:16:01And I've just seen you urinating on the floor, with the stream of urine coming out.

0:16:01 > 0:16:04Don't treat me as stupid, OK.

0:16:04 > 0:16:05Nice one, thank you.

0:16:05 > 0:16:09You could be arrested for it. A stupid thing to do.

0:16:09 > 0:16:11Do you know why I'm taking this so personally?

0:16:11 > 0:16:16- Yeah, it's inappropriate. - No, I eat here during my day job.

0:16:16 > 0:16:19- So, I'm not impressed. - That's far from... Yeah.- OK?

0:16:21 > 0:16:25That's my tolerance level now getting quite low.

0:16:25 > 0:16:28I'm cold, I'm tired and I'm fed up with drunken people.

0:16:34 > 0:16:38High in the night sky, the helicops are continuing the search

0:16:38 > 0:16:39for the missing person.

0:16:42 > 0:16:45PC Nick Kane needs to point the response officers on the ground

0:16:45 > 0:16:47in the right direction.

0:16:47 > 0:16:50Whisky Oscar Nine Nine to the officers on the railway.

0:16:50 > 0:16:54Can you put your hands up wide, so I can establish I've got you, please?

0:16:54 > 0:16:57- He's coming back towards them. - Right.

0:16:57 > 0:17:01We've got the first person just about 100 metres in front of you.

0:17:01 > 0:17:04Now we've got another person, who's meeting up with him now

0:17:04 > 0:17:07on the other railway to your right, they're meeting up together.

0:17:07 > 0:17:10About 200 metres in front of you.

0:17:10 > 0:17:14Yeah, noted. I'm looking at five on the line the moment.

0:17:16 > 0:17:18I can't tell now. I'll be up there as soon as I can.

0:17:19 > 0:17:21OK, it looks like they're making up now,

0:17:21 > 0:17:25so he looks as if he's been forgiven for all his sins.

0:17:25 > 0:17:27They're not moving.

0:17:27 > 0:17:29- So, it looks all in order. - Yeah, marvellous.

0:17:29 > 0:17:32I'll see you, over.

0:17:32 > 0:17:35Right, it's all in order, as long as no trains come along.

0:17:37 > 0:17:39The trains are on stop, aren't they?

0:17:41 > 0:17:45OK, that's great. All officers are on their way back to the rail station,

0:17:45 > 0:17:46if you could wait for them.

0:17:50 > 0:17:52Whisky Oscar Nine Nine, we're on our way back.

0:17:54 > 0:17:57Roger, Nine Nine, thanks for your assistance for that.

0:18:00 > 0:18:06On a daily basis, we go searching for missing, vulnerable people

0:18:06 > 0:18:08who are threatening to harm, hurt themselves.

0:18:08 > 0:18:13Some people who are desperately wanting to harm themselves genuinely,

0:18:13 > 0:18:19for various reasons, and others who genuinely want some help.

0:18:19 > 0:18:22It's a cry for help and they want some attention.

0:18:22 > 0:18:26Unfortunately, it's going to the police or to emergency services

0:18:26 > 0:18:28looking for that help.

0:18:33 > 0:18:35At a secure kennels in Wales,

0:18:35 > 0:18:40it's judgement day for the dogs seized by Officer Pennell.

0:18:43 > 0:18:47The first thing we look at in the confirmation, is the dog square.

0:18:47 > 0:18:49That is, is he as tall, as wide?

0:18:53 > 0:18:5522.5.

0:18:56 > 0:18:59As you can see, this dog does appear square.

0:19:00 > 0:19:03Although he's a little bit upset, you can see that in him,

0:19:03 > 0:19:05in his demeanour.

0:19:05 > 0:19:09What we're looking at here is the masseter muscles here.

0:19:09 > 0:19:14These are all about the fighting dog's ability for biting.

0:19:14 > 0:19:17As you can see they're well developed,

0:19:17 > 0:19:19nice strong neck, long neck.

0:19:19 > 0:19:24Again that's all about the fighting dog's reach, when they're fighting another dog.

0:19:24 > 0:19:27I'm not saying this dog has been used in dog fighting,

0:19:27 > 0:19:32however, that's the pit bull-type confirmation.

0:19:32 > 0:19:35In my view, he is a pit bull-type dog.

0:19:35 > 0:19:37There are genuine people out there who believe

0:19:37 > 0:19:41that they've got a large, Staff-type dog.

0:19:41 > 0:19:43So they honestly believe,

0:19:43 > 0:19:47"Oh, my God, this little Staff Bull Terrier I've just bought

0:19:47 > 0:19:50"has now grown up to a large dog."

0:19:50 > 0:19:52They don't understand what pit bulls are,

0:19:52 > 0:19:55until someone gets attacked by a pit bull-type dog.

0:19:56 > 0:20:01Officer Pennell decided both animals were illegal pit bull-types

0:20:01 > 0:20:03and their owners were prosecuted.

0:20:05 > 0:20:09But the dogs were allowed to return home, as long their owners complied

0:20:09 > 0:20:12to a strict list of rules and conditions.

0:20:16 > 0:20:20In Pontypridd, PC Price is making his way down to the River Taff.

0:20:21 > 0:20:24Where are they? All right, lovely.

0:20:25 > 0:20:29He's calling in on the council workers who've responded to his request

0:20:29 > 0:20:31to block off access to the drug den.

0:20:33 > 0:20:36Is it going right up tight to that? And the other side?

0:20:36 > 0:20:39Oh, to the drop? Oh, excellent.

0:20:39 > 0:20:41I am really pleased with that.

0:20:41 > 0:20:44They've obviously realised how dangerous this area is

0:20:44 > 0:20:46and what a health hazard it is.

0:20:46 > 0:20:48In doing so, they've secured the funding really quickly,

0:20:48 > 0:20:50so I'm really pleased with it.

0:20:50 > 0:20:52It's going to make a huge difference, as well

0:20:52 > 0:20:54with regards to the needles, the health hazard,

0:20:54 > 0:20:56all that sort of stuff.

0:20:57 > 0:21:00It is that cliche, you are making that difference.

0:21:00 > 0:21:03So that is really good and it's a difference to the town centre,

0:21:03 > 0:21:04so I am pleased about that.

0:21:07 > 0:21:11Neighbourhood police officers each have their own little patch in which they serve

0:21:11 > 0:21:16and, for PC Jonathan Handy, being out on the beat is important.

0:21:16 > 0:21:19How are you? All right? How's it going?

0:21:19 > 0:21:21Been doing a bit of shopping, have you?

0:21:22 > 0:21:25It's traditional policing and the public like to see it.

0:21:25 > 0:21:28It's one of the best parts of neighbourhood policing.

0:21:28 > 0:21:31You actually get to get out in the community,

0:21:31 > 0:21:35it's a bit different from being stuck in a panda car chasing people with blue lights.

0:21:35 > 0:21:38Nice to get out and have a chat with people and see what's happening out on the street.

0:21:38 > 0:21:42It's, you know, they always say we don't see a bobby on the beat,

0:21:42 > 0:21:43but you can see us on the bus.

0:21:43 > 0:21:47The initial reaction is, "They're coming for me, what have I done wrong?"

0:21:47 > 0:21:49"Will we be arrested on the bus?"

0:21:49 > 0:21:53But once they see we're just on the bus to have a chat, they relax then.

0:21:53 > 0:21:56- Thanks for that. See you again.- Ta-ra.- Cheers.

0:21:57 > 0:22:01This morning, Jonathan is visiting Pontypridd's Mission for the Deaf.

0:22:01 > 0:22:04They have been teaching him how to sign.

0:22:07 > 0:22:10Hello. Hello. Everything OK? Fantastic.

0:22:10 > 0:22:14J-O-NA...

0:22:14 > 0:22:18..erm, T-HA-N.

0:22:18 > 0:22:20- Jonathan.- Very good.

0:22:20 > 0:22:25- Was that OK? - HE LAUGHS

0:22:25 > 0:22:28There's part of the community out there don't really use the police,

0:22:28 > 0:22:30because we're not really that accessible to them,

0:22:30 > 0:22:33so it's vital we do work like this, just to keep those links going.

0:22:33 > 0:22:36And it's great fun coming here. They're fabulous people.

0:22:38 > 0:22:40Before, there was no way of understanding people.

0:22:40 > 0:22:44But now, the police here in Pontypridd sign.

0:22:44 > 0:22:47It's better now in Pontypridd. Much better.

0:22:47 > 0:22:49I just want to say to everyone,

0:22:49 > 0:22:56thank you for coming here to see me today.

0:22:56 > 0:22:57Thank you.

0:22:57 > 0:23:00Just basically, helping people is the main motivation for me.

0:23:00 > 0:23:03Some people, it's catching criminals.

0:23:03 > 0:23:05I tend to want to help the good guy, type of thing.

0:23:07 > 0:23:08Thank you.

0:23:12 > 0:23:15Perfect! Thank you.

0:23:18 > 0:23:23Last year in Wales, over 300 people were attacked by dogs.

0:23:24 > 0:23:28The consequences of being bitten by an animal can be life changing.

0:23:28 > 0:23:30Hello.

0:23:30 > 0:23:33Hiya. PC Walter Purnell. Dog Legislation Officer.

0:23:33 > 0:23:35I spoke to you on the phone earlier.

0:23:35 > 0:23:38Today, Walter is visiting eight-year-old Caitlin,

0:23:38 > 0:23:41who was savaged by a dog in the street.

0:23:41 > 0:23:43Hiya, Caitlin. How are you?

0:23:43 > 0:23:46- Did the dog frighten you that day? - Yes.

0:23:46 > 0:23:49Yeah, it's not nice, is it? She's very lucky, in fact.

0:23:49 > 0:23:52She could have lost an eye. That's how close it was.

0:23:52 > 0:23:56When I saw the hole there. It was that close.

0:23:56 > 0:23:59The dog has been destroyed, so it's been taken out of the community.

0:23:59 > 0:24:03- Which is the most important thing. - That's right.

0:24:03 > 0:24:05Because, unfortunately, it's happened to Caitlin.

0:24:05 > 0:24:07It will not happen again, hopefully.

0:24:07 > 0:24:09And we couldn't say it wasn't going to happen again.

0:24:09 > 0:24:11So at least that's been sorted out.

0:24:11 > 0:24:16I had to go in the ambulance to the hospital.

0:24:16 > 0:24:18Are you feeling better now?

0:24:19 > 0:24:21I tell you what, perhaps we'll organise,

0:24:21 > 0:24:25and you can come down to the kennels and have a look at the police dogs?

0:24:25 > 0:24:27- Would you like that? - You'd like that, wouldn't you?- Yeah?

0:24:27 > 0:24:31And perhaps bring your family down and have a look? Yeah?

0:24:31 > 0:24:35Because we've got lots and lots of police dogs.

0:24:35 > 0:24:37Some are used to bite people, because they need to.

0:24:37 > 0:24:40But there's others who will just play games.

0:24:40 > 0:24:43They like playing hide and seek, with a ball.

0:24:43 > 0:24:46- Thank you, Gareth, for your time. - No problem.- We'll be in touch.

0:24:46 > 0:24:49Any time you need to contact me, you can ring me.

0:24:49 > 0:24:51- And I'll return the phone call, as soon as I can.- No problem.

0:24:51 > 0:24:53Caitlin, bye.

0:24:54 > 0:24:58The dog that attacked Caitlin was not an illegal type

0:24:58 > 0:25:01and the police are still working on the case.

0:25:01 > 0:25:05PC Purnell has to get back to his job of investigating dangerous dogs.

0:25:08 > 0:25:10A lot of people don't understand

0:25:10 > 0:25:15that these dogs are quite human-loving type dogs.

0:25:15 > 0:25:20But unfortunately, when they do turn, they don't stop biting

0:25:20 > 0:25:24and they'll quite happily kill anything that they are biting.

0:25:27 > 0:25:31And that's the whole point of the Dog Legislation Officer,

0:25:31 > 0:25:34is to seize and get these dogs before the courts.

0:25:39 > 0:25:43In Pontypridd, the neighbourhood team are planning a raid.

0:25:43 > 0:25:47There is a warrant being issued for an address in Pontypridd,

0:25:47 > 0:25:49where we believe an offence has taken place,

0:25:49 > 0:25:50under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

0:25:50 > 0:25:54Possession offences and also possession with intent to supply.

0:25:54 > 0:25:59PC Handy is briefing and Officer Price is part of the team.

0:25:59 > 0:26:01Customers include schoolchildren,

0:26:01 > 0:26:03so this is somebody we need to take out.

0:26:03 > 0:26:06He's one of our divisional priorities.

0:26:06 > 0:26:07Let's rock and roll.

0:26:11 > 0:26:15The suspect is potentially violent and, for extra protection,

0:26:15 > 0:26:18Jonathan has drafted in the Tactical Support Team.

0:26:26 > 0:26:29Police! Police!

0:26:29 > 0:26:31SHOUTING

0:26:36 > 0:26:39- Mike, are you all right? - Yes, all right.

0:26:39 > 0:26:42- What have we got upstairs? - One female.- One female, yeah?

0:26:42 > 0:26:46A female officer.

0:26:46 > 0:26:49The main target of the raid isn't home.

0:26:49 > 0:26:52I'll secure the door.

0:26:52 > 0:26:55Anything else in the car? In the bags?

0:26:55 > 0:26:56Nothing in there.

0:26:58 > 0:27:01But officers continue to search every possible hiding place

0:27:01 > 0:27:04in the house, for a stash of drugs.

0:27:09 > 0:27:12There we are. Cannabis.

0:27:14 > 0:27:18In the main, what we've got is a small piece of cannabis bush,

0:27:18 > 0:27:20here on this tray.

0:27:20 > 0:27:22Just there.

0:27:22 > 0:27:25This, as far as I'm aware, looks like part of a bong,

0:27:25 > 0:27:27which again is used in the taking of drugs.

0:27:31 > 0:27:34The woman in the house was cautioned for possession of cannabis

0:27:34 > 0:27:38and Valium, but was not suspected of dealing.

0:27:38 > 0:27:41I feel any result is a good result, in terms of community impact.

0:27:41 > 0:27:44Everyone has seen us going to the address, from the local community.

0:27:44 > 0:27:48So they know that we're onto the drugs problem in the area

0:27:48 > 0:27:49and we are taking action.

0:27:49 > 0:27:53We have recovered a small quantity of cannabis and some Valium tablets.

0:27:53 > 0:27:56So any drugs taken off the street is a positive result.

0:27:56 > 0:27:59And I think we've had a dramatic effect on the female herself.

0:27:59 > 0:28:00She's quite shaken up.

0:28:00 > 0:28:03So I think it will make her think twice about dabbling in drugs

0:28:03 > 0:28:04in the future.

0:28:06 > 0:28:08The main target of the raid may have got away this time,

0:28:08 > 0:28:11but the neighbourhood team are watching.

0:28:14 > 0:28:16Next time on Police 24/7...

0:28:16 > 0:28:20Officers call time on a pub in Merthyr Tydfil...

0:28:20 > 0:28:21SHARP KNOCKING

0:28:21 > 0:28:23This is as bad as it gets, in a public house.

0:28:23 > 0:28:27In the custody suites, the cleaners are fighting grime...

0:28:27 > 0:28:31Sometimes it's best not to try and overthink it. Just clean it.

0:28:31 > 0:28:35..and the mounted police get into the swing of things

0:28:35 > 0:28:37at Porthcawl's Elvis Festival.

0:28:37 > 0:28:41# Because I love you too much, baby! #
