0:00:06 > 0:00:09SHE GASPS My jewellery! Oh, no!

0:00:09 > 0:00:14It's an invasion of your personal space. Somebody has been in your house going through stuff.

0:00:14 > 0:00:17It's not just your expensive gadgets that are under threat -

0:00:17 > 0:00:21it's your priceless, irreplaceable heirlooms, too...

0:00:21 > 0:00:24What's that football expression? You feel gutted.

0:00:24 > 0:00:28..items of huge sentimental value.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31Dad was very proud of his entire career in the flying service

0:00:31 > 0:00:35so to have the medals stolen... I know he was absolutely devastated.

0:00:35 > 0:00:36It can be a difficult time...

0:00:36 > 0:00:41What's that saying? An Englishman's home is his castle.

0:00:41 > 0:00:43..but dedicated teams of police are on the case...

0:00:43 > 0:00:46- Police!- Police!- Police!

0:00:46 > 0:00:49..with specialist burglary units across the country

0:00:49 > 0:00:51chasing down the villains...

0:00:51 > 0:00:54- Just calm down. - And let us do our checks.

0:00:54 > 0:00:58..using every high-tech tool at their disposal,

0:00:58 > 0:01:01working with the Good Samaritans among us...

0:01:01 > 0:01:03Do you think you recognise them if you saw them again?

0:01:03 > 0:01:06- Yeah, I think I probably would. - ..to make sure justice is done.

0:01:09 > 0:01:12Their ultimate aim - to recover your prized possessions...

0:01:12 > 0:01:14We're dancing.

0:01:14 > 0:01:17Just found a bag of sat navs.

0:01:17 > 0:01:19..and return them to you.

0:01:19 > 0:01:22- It's amazing, the work that they've done. - And we've got all our stuff back.

0:01:22 > 0:01:25I'm very pleased with the police, and they've been so good and kind.

0:01:25 > 0:01:29I have nothing but gratitude for the efforts they've made.

0:01:29 > 0:01:33This is Robbed, Raided, Reunited.

0:01:33 > 0:01:36- Thank you so much.- Thank you so much.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38Thank you ever so, ever so much.

0:01:48 > 0:01:52On today's programme, a family's home is ransacked,

0:01:52 > 0:01:55leaving a young student's future in jeopardy...

0:01:55 > 0:01:59On the computer there's my schoolwork from the past four or five years.

0:01:59 > 0:02:03..but the hunt for the burglars leads to an unexpected result...

0:02:03 > 0:02:06- Have you had a sat nav stolen?- Yes.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09- Did it look like that?- Yeah.

0:02:11 > 0:02:14..and a local theatre group whose equipment is stolen

0:02:14 > 0:02:17turn detective to make sure the show does go on.

0:02:17 > 0:02:21Suddenly, one of our members saw the lighting control board

0:02:21 > 0:02:24on the online auction site.

0:02:27 > 0:02:30Southend-on-Sea is a visitor's playground,

0:02:30 > 0:02:32but unfortunately for some residents,

0:02:32 > 0:02:35it's also a burglar's playground.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40At Southend Central police station, detectives Paul Brown

0:02:40 > 0:02:44and Gary Jackets are due to interview two suspected burglars

0:02:44 > 0:02:48caught red-handed this afternoon with two bags of stolen goods.

0:02:48 > 0:02:51When he made off, he ran quite a way, didn't he?

0:02:51 > 0:02:53I'll quote you something from this statement.

0:02:53 > 0:02:56"I was 10m away from him, the visibility was good

0:02:56 > 0:02:59- "and as- BLEEP- turned and looked at me,

0:02:59 > 0:03:02"beyond the green metal fence that he had just climbed,

0:03:02 > 0:03:05"the suspect dropped the holdall that he was carrying

0:03:05 > 0:03:08"and made off out of my sight."

0:03:09 > 0:03:12The officers want to have a closer look at where the suspects were caught.

0:03:12 > 0:03:14I'm just going on Street Map

0:03:14 > 0:03:17to see if we can get a better look at the area.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20They still don't know where they got stolen items from.

0:03:21 > 0:03:23So he's jumped over here and he's in here

0:03:23 > 0:03:26and then he ran over the other side, I imagine.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28Yeah, but he was the other side of that fence

0:03:28 > 0:03:31when he looked at him and dropped the bag and ran.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34Basically, we're getting all our evidence together

0:03:34 > 0:03:37and information for interview so we know what we're talking about

0:03:37 > 0:03:40when we go in there and we know what questions we can put to the suspects.

0:03:40 > 0:03:42We have two guys in custody at the moment

0:03:42 > 0:03:44who are known to us for dwelling burglaries.

0:03:44 > 0:03:47They've got on them items that unquestionably aren't theirs

0:03:47 > 0:03:50so they're going to have to account for that.

0:03:50 > 0:03:54So now is up to them to tell us where they got the stuff from.

0:03:54 > 0:03:58And the time they have to find out the full story is heavily regulated.

0:03:58 > 0:04:00They can be here for up to 24 hours.

0:04:00 > 0:04:02If we deem necessary, we can go to the superintendent

0:04:02 > 0:04:04and get an extension for another 12 hours.

0:04:08 > 0:04:13Southend-on-Sea has a lower than average rate of burglaries,

0:04:13 > 0:04:16but when they do happen they are just as traumatic.

0:04:20 > 0:04:22The Peer family have come from work

0:04:22 > 0:04:25to discover their entire house has been ransacked.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30I think the word that sums up my feelings now is "violated".

0:04:30 > 0:04:33Not only has stuff been nicked, but we're going to have to replace the doors.

0:04:35 > 0:04:37What's been happening?

0:04:37 > 0:04:41Scenes Of Crime officer Paul Clark arrives to start the investigation.

0:04:41 > 0:04:43How have they got in?

0:04:43 > 0:04:46The back patio door has been jimmied.

0:04:46 > 0:04:47Right, OK.

0:04:47 > 0:04:51I came in from work, I picked my son up from school, came in,

0:04:51 > 0:04:55turned on the lights, saw the stuff on the floor and thought,

0:04:55 > 0:05:00"That's a bit odd," looked down the room and saw the laptop had gone

0:05:00 > 0:05:05and I said, "Hang on - don't touch anything. I think we've been burgled."

0:05:05 > 0:05:08The burglars have forced the patio doors.

0:05:08 > 0:05:10Has that got a lock? Yeah, it has as well, hasn't it?

0:05:10 > 0:05:13I mean, this is obviously quite thick aluminium here, but it's...

0:05:13 > 0:05:15Yeah, but inside they've done the same.

0:05:15 > 0:05:17- My main concern is securing it tonight.- That's right.

0:05:17 > 0:05:21Just make sure there's no blood or anything on there.

0:05:22 > 0:05:24It's quite sharp as well, isn't it?

0:05:25 > 0:05:28The police are keen to gather any trace of DNA

0:05:28 > 0:05:30that might lead them to a suspect.

0:05:33 > 0:05:35They've broken the side of the shed.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39The burglars appear to have used

0:05:39 > 0:05:41the victim's own possessions to break-in.

0:05:41 > 0:05:43Yeah, I mean, the padlock's still intact,

0:05:43 > 0:05:47but with wood, obviously, they've just ripped the whole thing off.

0:05:47 > 0:05:50I mean, people think of burglars walking around with a big crowbar,

0:05:50 > 0:05:53but it's easier to go to someone's house

0:05:53 > 0:05:56and find something at the house that they can use.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59We think that these items which have been taken out the shed,

0:05:59 > 0:06:02which unfortunately are soaking wet now, but there's...

0:06:03 > 0:06:07..this item here which could have been used.

0:06:07 > 0:06:11It's obviously something quite big for it actually bend all that,

0:06:11 > 0:06:12and this part as well.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15Obviously here quite a while trying to get in.

0:06:17 > 0:06:21They didn't appear to be too worried about the noise they were making

0:06:21 > 0:06:23and we've established that it's probably happened

0:06:23 > 0:06:26between two o'clock and four o'clock in the afternoon.

0:06:26 > 0:06:30- Right.- The Xbox was sitting here and the transducer thing across the back.

0:06:30 > 0:06:32They've taken one handset, but not that one.

0:06:32 > 0:06:35They've taken his iPod that was on here,

0:06:35 > 0:06:40been in his wallet, taken the money that was in there - it was about 20 quid...

0:06:40 > 0:06:43The burglars have been through every room in the house.

0:06:43 > 0:06:48- The other one, this is... My other son's at uni.- OK.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51- This is his tin that were sitting on there.- So they've opened that.

0:06:51 > 0:06:54That's all that was in it. Just old change.

0:06:54 > 0:06:58- The other computer was laying down there. That's gone.- Right.

0:06:58 > 0:07:02I know my son was upset. Just the look on his face,

0:07:02 > 0:07:05and he was going round and it was nearly all his stuff.

0:07:06 > 0:07:10- This is your bedroom?- Yes. They've been in there. There was loads of rings.

0:07:10 > 0:07:13- They've taken the ones that were worth money.- OK.

0:07:13 > 0:07:15The television that they've moved. OK.

0:07:15 > 0:07:17The electrical goods can be replaced,

0:07:17 > 0:07:21but as dad Mike reflects, memories can't.

0:07:21 > 0:07:26When my father died, my brother and myself and my mother

0:07:26 > 0:07:30each bought something to remind us of him

0:07:30 > 0:07:37and the ring has markings on, initials, and a small diamond.

0:07:37 > 0:07:42There's also some of my late mother's rings - not very valuable -

0:07:42 > 0:07:44and a watch she had as well.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47It's the sentimental value.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50And perhaps I was foolish leaving it on the bedside,

0:07:50 > 0:07:52but you just don't think of these things.

0:07:52 > 0:07:56It's not just the past that's been stolen from the family -

0:07:56 > 0:07:58it could be their future, too.

0:07:58 > 0:08:01Son Nick has an interview at Cambridge University next week,

0:08:01 > 0:08:04but one of the items stolen was his laptop

0:08:04 > 0:08:07with all his academic files and documents on it.

0:08:07 > 0:08:10He's got an interview on the 9th at Cambridge

0:08:10 > 0:08:14and he needs to do some research before he goes for the interview

0:08:14 > 0:08:17which he was going to start tonight.

0:08:17 > 0:08:20There's my schoolwork from the past four or five years.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23There's coursework I was going to hand in on Monday,

0:08:23 > 0:08:25there's notes for books I've got to read,

0:08:25 > 0:08:28there's various pieces of other work, there's essays,

0:08:28 > 0:08:30and there's also my personal files,

0:08:30 > 0:08:33so music and photos and things like that.

0:08:34 > 0:08:37With the prospect of Nick's education now in jeopardy,

0:08:37 > 0:08:41all in all, it's been a miserable night for the family.

0:08:41 > 0:08:43But coming up...

0:08:43 > 0:08:48A startling connection between the two cases leads to a breakthrough.

0:08:48 > 0:08:52We've recovered quite a large amount of property. We're hoping it is your stuff.

0:08:52 > 0:08:58And Officer Brown and his team pay the burglary suspect's home a visit.

0:08:58 > 0:08:59I've got a search warrant,

0:08:59 > 0:09:01if you don't open the door we'll force the entry.

0:09:01 > 0:09:04RAM THUDS

0:09:06 > 0:09:09- But first...- Is your ladyship at home this afternoon?

0:09:09 > 0:09:11- Yes - who has called? - Lord Darlington, my lady.

0:09:11 > 0:09:17In Romford, Essex, a community drama group - The Guildonian Players -

0:09:17 > 0:09:20meets every week to rehearse in the local church.

0:09:20 > 0:09:23But one evening in September 2011,

0:09:23 > 0:09:26Suzy Faulkner and her group made a shocking discovery.

0:09:26 > 0:09:31One of the church members came in to me and said, "We've had a burglary.

0:09:31 > 0:09:33"Have you got anything missing?"

0:09:33 > 0:09:36And then I opened our stage management office

0:09:36 > 0:09:40and discovered that our lighting control board

0:09:40 > 0:09:44and all our sound control equipment had gone.

0:09:46 > 0:09:48The way that the burglars got in,

0:09:48 > 0:09:52they broke a window in the playschool area

0:09:52 > 0:09:55and they managed to find the keys.

0:09:55 > 0:09:59They basically went wherever they could find a key that fitted.

0:09:59 > 0:10:02They opened the doors and in the few places

0:10:02 > 0:10:04where there was something they couldn't get into,

0:10:04 > 0:10:06they broke the locks.

0:10:08 > 0:10:10The items the burglars stole

0:10:10 > 0:10:13were vital to the running of the drama group -

0:10:13 > 0:10:16their high-tech light control desk and sound equipment.

0:10:16 > 0:10:20The lighting equipment we replaced about three or four years ago.

0:10:20 > 0:10:25The sound equipment - our most recent purchase - just cost us so much

0:10:25 > 0:10:30and, of course, since now, all gone, so we start from square one again.

0:10:30 > 0:10:34The theatre group had invested a huge amount of time and energy

0:10:34 > 0:10:37raising the money to buy the expensive equipment.

0:10:37 > 0:10:40Without it, it was clear the show could not go on.

0:10:40 > 0:10:43Their next performance was due within weeks,

0:10:43 > 0:10:46rehearsals nearly complete, tickets already sold.

0:10:46 > 0:10:50The drama group may have been facing their final curtain.

0:10:51 > 0:10:55The Guildonian Players was formed 66 years ago

0:10:55 > 0:10:59and is run by volunteers from the local community.

0:10:59 > 0:11:03We are all unpaid. We do it because we love doing it.

0:11:03 > 0:11:07Every year the group puts on plays

0:11:07 > 0:11:10to raise money for maintenance work on the church.

0:11:10 > 0:11:12An essential part of the community,

0:11:12 > 0:11:15the church also provides vital services for local people.

0:11:15 > 0:11:18The theft of the equipment would have a massive impact -

0:11:18 > 0:11:22not just on the play, but also on the group's fundraising efforts.

0:11:23 > 0:11:27We'd got to plays about to be produced only weeks away.

0:11:27 > 0:11:31We were looking into hiring equipment,

0:11:31 > 0:11:33which would take away from any funding

0:11:33 > 0:11:36that we could get from that play.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38We were very, very worried.

0:11:40 > 0:11:44Days passed and the police reported little progress in the case.

0:11:44 > 0:11:47Lighting engineer Nigel Cooke decided to surf the internet,

0:11:47 > 0:11:52desperately looking in case someone try to sell the stolen equipment.

0:11:54 > 0:11:57And there was a sighting.

0:11:57 > 0:12:02After six days, suddenly, one of our members

0:12:02 > 0:12:07saw the lighting control board on the online auction site.

0:12:09 > 0:12:12Nigel had discovered their lighting desk was being sold online.

0:12:12 > 0:12:17Lo and behold, this board came up with lots of pictures of it

0:12:17 > 0:12:21and it was so identifiable because even stickers that I'd put on,

0:12:21 > 0:12:23like, pre-show, they were still on the board.

0:12:23 > 0:12:26The guys hadn't even removed that when they tried to sell it.

0:12:27 > 0:12:30It was for sale with a local second-hand dealer

0:12:30 > 0:12:34who had bought the light-box without realising it was stolen.

0:12:34 > 0:12:36Nigel went straight to the shop,

0:12:36 > 0:12:39but he still had to prove the equipment belonged to the group.

0:12:39 > 0:12:42They asked me how could I finally identify it

0:12:42 > 0:12:45from something that wasn't visible

0:12:45 > 0:12:48and I told them it was the lid.

0:12:48 > 0:12:52Our lighting engineer had written on the box "base" and "top"

0:12:52 > 0:12:56so that when we opened it we didn't open it the wrong way up.

0:12:56 > 0:12:59Without looking at it, he was able to say these things,

0:12:59 > 0:13:01so it was very obvious that it was ours.

0:13:01 > 0:13:04It was a remarkable discovery,

0:13:04 > 0:13:06but not everything stolen could be recovered.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09Sadly, the sound equipment wasn't there.

0:13:09 > 0:13:11The assistant manager told us,

0:13:11 > 0:13:15"Yes, it had been there until the Saturday morning."

0:13:15 > 0:13:19If we'd only seen the online auction site sooner,

0:13:19 > 0:13:22we might have recovered all of the equipment.

0:13:22 > 0:13:25The audio equipment couldn't be traced,

0:13:25 > 0:13:29but thankfully the group had managed to borrow some.

0:13:29 > 0:13:33With the imminent return of the lighting desk, the play was back on.

0:13:33 > 0:13:35However, the police needed to carry out

0:13:35 > 0:13:38forensic tests on the desk before returning it.

0:13:38 > 0:13:41The group were left with another agonising wait.

0:13:41 > 0:13:44We didn't know whether we were going to get the equipment back,

0:13:44 > 0:13:47whether they were going to hold it for the court and so we waited.

0:13:49 > 0:13:52Finally, with only three days left,

0:13:52 > 0:13:54The Guildonian Players' lighting desk was returned

0:13:54 > 0:13:57and the show could go on.

0:13:57 > 0:14:00APPLAUSE

0:14:00 > 0:14:04- That dammed poster. - Jumper and breeches.

0:14:04 > 0:14:08Standing at the back seeing the lights working properly

0:14:08 > 0:14:10as they should do is just great.

0:14:10 > 0:14:15The play proved a great success, raising over £1,000 for the church.

0:14:15 > 0:14:17It just goes to show, sometimes

0:14:17 > 0:14:19a bit of amateur detective work does pay off.

0:14:19 > 0:14:22APPLAUSE

0:14:27 > 0:14:31Earlier, we were in Southend where police had arrested two men

0:14:31 > 0:14:34carrying stolen goods in broad daylight.

0:14:34 > 0:14:37They've got on them items that unquestionably aren't theirs.

0:14:37 > 0:14:39Later that day, the Peer family

0:14:39 > 0:14:43reported they'd been burgled while they were out.

0:14:44 > 0:14:45It's the sentimental value

0:14:45 > 0:14:48and perhaps I was foolish leaving it on the bedside,

0:14:48 > 0:14:50but you just don't think of these things.

0:14:50 > 0:14:53They had several thousand pounds worth of their possessions stolen,

0:14:53 > 0:14:57including a laptop which contained vital coursework

0:14:57 > 0:15:00for son Nick's interview at Cambridge University.

0:15:00 > 0:15:03I know my son was upset. Just the look on his face,

0:15:03 > 0:15:06and he was going round and it was nearly all his stuff.

0:15:09 > 0:15:14It's now 5pm. Detectives Paul Brown and Gary jackets from Southend CID

0:15:14 > 0:15:17have been briefed on the Peer's burglary.

0:15:17 > 0:15:20We've got here a map of where the action took place,

0:15:20 > 0:15:22where they were seen, where they were arrested

0:15:22 > 0:15:27and were they made off from. So now it's up to them to tell us

0:15:27 > 0:15:30where they got the stuff from and if they did that burglary.

0:15:30 > 0:15:33They decide it's worth taking the goods seized

0:15:33 > 0:15:37from the two suspected burglars that afternoon over to the house.

0:15:40 > 0:15:41At the Peer family home,

0:15:41 > 0:15:45Scene Of Crime officer Clark is determined to gather fingerprints.

0:15:50 > 0:15:53We spend quite a lot of time looking at the point of entry

0:15:53 > 0:15:58because that's where we tend to find quite a lot of our finger marks,

0:15:58 > 0:16:03because normally you've either got to force something or get through a small gap

0:16:03 > 0:16:06and you're more likely to leave your fingerprints.

0:16:08 > 0:16:12At 5.30pm, detectives Brown and Jackets arrive at the house.

0:16:12 > 0:16:14- Have you reported a burglary? - Correct.

0:16:14 > 0:16:17Yeah, PC Brown from Southend police station.

0:16:17 > 0:16:20We've recovered quite a large amount of property.

0:16:20 > 0:16:23We've got it all with us so we're hoping it is your stuff.

0:16:34 > 0:16:37What do you know is missing at the moment?

0:16:37 > 0:16:39We've got a list.

0:16:42 > 0:16:45A lot of stuff, I have to say, at the moment matching that description

0:16:45 > 0:16:47we have with us, so hopefully that's good.

0:16:49 > 0:16:53But what about the all-important laptop,

0:16:53 > 0:16:55critical to Nick's Cambridge prospects?

0:16:55 > 0:16:58Were just trying to identify that this is the same laptop

0:16:58 > 0:17:01that was stolen from his house earlier on today

0:17:01 > 0:17:04is the one that we've recovered.

0:17:04 > 0:17:07What's the password? NICK ANSWERS INDISTINCTLY

0:17:07 > 0:17:08- P?- Yeah.

0:17:08 > 0:17:11If it is Nick's, it will also connect

0:17:11 > 0:17:13the two suspects with this exact crime.

0:17:13 > 0:17:18And the first thing down there should be the Google Chrome logo.

0:17:19 > 0:17:21Is that fair to say that is...?

0:17:21 > 0:17:25- Yes, and there's Google Chrome there.- Yeah?- Yeah.

0:17:25 > 0:17:28This is a remarkable break-through

0:17:28 > 0:17:30reuniting the family with most of their stolen items.

0:17:32 > 0:17:35I'm happy it's all back.

0:17:35 > 0:17:38Less destructive than if it hadn't been found.

0:17:39 > 0:17:42And because it's happened so quickly,

0:17:42 > 0:17:46there's plenty more time to question the suspects about the other items they've stolen.

0:17:46 > 0:17:48It's surprising, really, isn't it?

0:17:48 > 0:17:51That they manage to get it. Which is quite nice.

0:17:51 > 0:17:53These, I think, were known criminals

0:17:53 > 0:17:56that they've caught that have just come out

0:17:56 > 0:17:59from wherever they were tucked away.

0:17:59 > 0:18:01I don't know what their age is or anything.

0:18:01 > 0:18:06Just low-life that have probably got nothing better to do.

0:18:06 > 0:18:08I'd just like to meet them.

0:18:10 > 0:18:13Officer Brown is pleased with the night's work.

0:18:13 > 0:18:16It's just a good result, you know?

0:18:16 > 0:18:19And we're hoping, obviously, the people's fingerprints

0:18:19 > 0:18:22will be on the stuff, because that'll tie them to the property

0:18:22 > 0:18:25which will then tie them to the burglary. Fingers crossed.

0:18:28 > 0:18:30The two suspects are questioned overnight.

0:18:30 > 0:18:33They won't say what has happened to the Peer family's jewellery,

0:18:33 > 0:18:36but have revealed two addresses they use.

0:18:36 > 0:18:38Officer Brown and his raid squad

0:18:38 > 0:18:41head for the addresses first thing the next morning.

0:18:41 > 0:18:45What we'll be looking for is anything used to commit burglaries

0:18:45 > 0:18:47and anything from burglaries.

0:18:48 > 0:18:50We know these guys are active burglars anyway

0:18:50 > 0:18:53and we've had loads of burglaries in this area,

0:18:53 > 0:18:56so there is a likelihood there may be property there

0:18:56 > 0:18:59from other burglaries or from this burglary,

0:18:59 > 0:19:01so we'll see when we get inside.

0:19:02 > 0:19:05Can I have an entry code, please?

0:19:05 > 0:19:08The family of one of the lads in custody.

0:19:08 > 0:19:12I think his dad lives there. Whether he'll be there not, we don't know.

0:19:29 > 0:19:30Come to the door - it's the police.

0:19:32 > 0:19:34BANGS LETTERBOX

0:19:34 > 0:19:38Police officers, come to the door now or the door will be forced.

0:19:44 > 0:19:47- RAM THUDS - Stop! All right! - Open the door!- Hang on!

0:19:47 > 0:19:49LATCH CLICKS

0:19:53 > 0:19:56Once inside, they must establish exactly who's there.

0:19:59 > 0:20:02- Is anyone else here? - No, it's only me here.

0:20:02 > 0:20:04Only the suspect's father is present

0:20:04 > 0:20:06and is told exactly why they are there.

0:20:06 > 0:20:08Obviously we've got the authority

0:20:08 > 0:20:11to search the premises under section 18 of PACE.

0:20:11 > 0:20:14- The aim is to try and find stolen goods.- Right.- OK?

0:20:14 > 0:20:16And anything in relation to a burglary.

0:20:16 > 0:20:18That's the reason we're here at the moment.

0:20:18 > 0:20:21Paul and his team must meticulously go through the flat

0:20:21 > 0:20:24to see if any of the contents could be stolen.

0:20:27 > 0:20:30Unruly kids can often make their parents' life a misery,

0:20:30 > 0:20:33but for this dad, having a serial burglar has a son

0:20:33 > 0:20:35is getting beyond a joke.

0:20:35 > 0:20:38I know the police have been here a few times before, haven't they?

0:20:38 > 0:20:40But I haven't done anything. They've taken my stuff before

0:20:40 > 0:20:43because of my boys then come round and give it back to me

0:20:43 > 0:20:46and I've lost my stuff twice now because of their aggro.

0:20:47 > 0:20:50I ain't involved, I'll tell you that. I don't get involved.

0:20:52 > 0:20:56Nevertheless, Paul's team must conduct a thorough search.

0:20:56 > 0:20:59We're looking for things like boxes of jewellery,

0:20:59 > 0:21:03new electrical items that they just wouldn't have here.

0:21:03 > 0:21:06If they've got any Xboxes or Wiis. Cos obviously,

0:21:06 > 0:21:09when you're somewhere like this, things stick out a bit more.

0:21:10 > 0:21:12It looks like Paul and his officers

0:21:12 > 0:21:14have drawn a blank at the first address,

0:21:14 > 0:21:17although they are going to take some martial arts equipment

0:21:17 > 0:21:19to see if it's involved in any offences.

0:21:21 > 0:21:24He's going to sign them over for us.

0:21:25 > 0:21:28Not the normal thing that I'd keep in my house.

0:21:32 > 0:21:34Undeterred, the raid team move on.

0:21:34 > 0:21:37The second address belongs to the pregnant girlfriend

0:21:37 > 0:21:40of one of the suspects who lives in the same block of flats.

0:21:44 > 0:21:47It's police officers, can you come to the door, please?

0:21:49 > 0:21:51We've got a search warrant.

0:21:51 > 0:21:53If you don't open the door, we'll force entry.

0:21:53 > 0:21:56THEY BANG ON DOOR

0:21:56 > 0:21:58It's not clear if she's at home...

0:21:58 > 0:22:00All right, stand clear of the door.

0:22:00 > 0:22:03..but the team must be sure no-one is near the door

0:22:03 > 0:22:06and at risk of being hit by shattered wood and metal.

0:22:08 > 0:22:12- BABY CRIES - Can you hear something? - That's next door.

0:22:13 > 0:22:17False alarm - the baby crying is from next door

0:22:17 > 0:22:21so Dan gets on with the job in hand.

0:22:21 > 0:22:24THUDS

0:22:24 > 0:22:29- Police!- Police!- Police officers.

0:22:30 > 0:22:32Not too exciting.

0:22:35 > 0:22:36There's no-one at home

0:22:36 > 0:22:39and there doesn't seem to be anything else here either.

0:22:39 > 0:22:43Yeah, sometimes that happens, but it's clear she's just moved in,

0:22:43 > 0:22:47she's decorating the place, so we'll get the door boarded up and we'll go.

0:22:47 > 0:22:51Cos as you can tell, there's absolutely nothing here - not even any carpets -

0:22:51 > 0:22:54so I don't think there's a great deal were going to be seizing.

0:22:57 > 0:23:00But just as it looks like another dead end...

0:23:01 > 0:23:03There's a bag of sat navs here.

0:23:05 > 0:23:08It's unusual to have three sat navs. Most people have only got ONE.

0:23:08 > 0:23:10If you've got an old one, you chuck 'em away.

0:23:10 > 0:23:12The fella in custody is known for stealing from cars,

0:23:12 > 0:23:14Him and his brother have been at it a long while

0:23:14 > 0:23:18and these will hopefully be returned to someone who owns them. Result.

0:23:25 > 0:23:28Back at the station, officer Gary Jackets has made good progress

0:23:28 > 0:23:32on the original burglary at the Peer family's home.

0:23:32 > 0:23:36We've had results back from Fingerprints,

0:23:36 > 0:23:39we've had a positive fingerprint for one of the suspects

0:23:39 > 0:23:43come back on a laptop and also on a cash tin

0:23:43 > 0:23:45that was not taken from the house,

0:23:45 > 0:23:49so it never left the house as far as we're concerned,

0:23:49 > 0:23:50it stayed in the house,

0:23:50 > 0:23:54and it's got one of the suspects' fingerprints on.

0:23:54 > 0:23:57So that puts them in the house.

0:23:58 > 0:24:00Liz was particularly interested

0:24:00 > 0:24:03in who could have done such a heartless thing to her family.

0:24:03 > 0:24:09Just low-life that probably have nothing better to do.

0:24:10 > 0:24:13Now Gary is keen to let her know justice is being done

0:24:13 > 0:24:16and to put her mind at rest.

0:24:17 > 0:24:20All the paperwork is being put before the Crown Prosecution Service

0:24:20 > 0:24:23and they've recommended they both be charged with dwelling burglary.

0:24:23 > 0:24:28- Good.- OK?- Will they stay in custody?

0:24:28 > 0:24:30Or are you going to let them out on bail?

0:24:30 > 0:24:33No, I didn't mention that, sorry - no, they're on remand now

0:24:33 > 0:24:37so they'll be before the judge tomorrow morning.

0:24:37 > 0:24:39- Oh, brilliant.- And they'll either be let out tomorrow

0:24:39 > 0:24:42or they'll stay in prison until the case,

0:24:42 > 0:24:45which'll probably be mid January or early February.

0:24:45 > 0:24:48Oh, OK. So are they likely to be detained?

0:24:48 > 0:24:50I'd be very disappointed if they're not.

0:24:53 > 0:24:56The officers must now trace the owners of the stolen sat navs.

0:24:59 > 0:25:02The sat navs that were found in the address,

0:25:02 > 0:25:05obviously gone through the history

0:25:05 > 0:25:08and looked on to the home screen for the home address.

0:25:08 > 0:25:12We've got two addresses to try, to try and locate the owners of these two sat navs.

0:25:12 > 0:25:16The hope is that the home address programmed into the sat nav

0:25:16 > 0:25:20will lead them to someone also burgled by the suspects

0:25:20 > 0:25:23and they can be reunited with their property.

0:25:28 > 0:25:30Hello there. Police officers from Southend.

0:25:30 > 0:25:34- Nothing to worry about at all. Have you had a sat nav stolen?- Yes.

0:25:34 > 0:25:37- Did it look like that?- Yeah.- OK.

0:25:37 > 0:25:39We found this in someone's address

0:25:39 > 0:25:41and the home address comes back to here

0:25:41 > 0:25:43- so I'm guessing this is your sat nav.- Yes.

0:25:45 > 0:25:48- That's a bit of good news anyway, isn't it?- Yeah, it is - I'm very surprised!

0:25:50 > 0:25:56I thought I'd never see that any more so I feel very good, yeah.

0:25:56 > 0:25:59It's another victory in the battle to beat the burglars.

0:25:59 > 0:26:03I can confirm it is their sat nav, so result.

0:26:06 > 0:26:10Apart from two phones, all of the Peer family's stolen items

0:26:10 > 0:26:14have been recovered, including their jewellery.

0:26:14 > 0:26:16Nick, aided by his reunited laptop,

0:26:16 > 0:26:19passed his interview at Cambridge

0:26:19 > 0:26:22and has been offered a place to study philosophy.

0:26:22 > 0:26:27The martial-arts equipment seized wasn't connected to further offences

0:26:27 > 0:26:32and the stolen sat nav wasn't proven to be linked to the suspects.

0:26:32 > 0:26:35But the older suspect did plead guilty to the Peer family's burglary

0:26:35 > 0:26:38and was sentenced to two and a half years in prison.

0:26:38 > 0:26:41The second suspect also later pleaded guilty

0:26:41 > 0:26:44and was sentenced to 16 months.

0:26:44 > 0:26:47In Romford, the show has gone on

0:26:47 > 0:26:50despite the theft of vital technical equipment.

0:26:52 > 0:26:56The drama group continued to perform using their returned lighting desk

0:26:56 > 0:26:59and borrowed audio equipment while they save for replacement.
