0:00:02 > 0:00:04Police!
0:00:04 > 0:00:07Teams of police are fighting a rise in burglaries across the UK.
0:00:07 > 0:00:14- Timberlands have gone.- Oh! - Oh, for God's sake!
0:00:14 > 0:00:18The people that do this are professionals. This is what they do for a living.
0:00:18 > 0:00:20Delta 600.
0:00:20 > 0:00:24Specialist units working with the latest technology
0:00:24 > 0:00:26and the community-minded among us...
0:00:26 > 0:00:29I just wondered if you were around, if you had anything?
0:00:29 > 0:00:30..to track down the thieves...
0:00:30 > 0:00:32Hold it right there, stop!
0:00:32 > 0:00:36..and make sure they are held to account.
0:00:36 > 0:00:40It's not just our expensive gadgets being taken from us.
0:00:40 > 0:00:44They just went in, took what they could and went.
0:00:44 > 0:00:46It's our cherished heirlooms too.
0:00:46 > 0:00:49The that upset me most was the loss of my mother's engagement ring.
0:00:49 > 0:00:54It's going to take a while to just get used to what has happened and get over it.
0:00:54 > 0:00:57Items that mean the world to us.
0:00:57 > 0:01:01I still get very upset over it. I do, really.
0:01:01 > 0:01:05But police officers love nothing more than to recover these prized possessions...
0:01:05 > 0:01:09They can confirm it is their sat-nav, so, result.
0:01:09 > 0:01:11..and return them to us.
0:01:11 > 0:01:14I didn't expect to see it again.
0:01:14 > 0:01:17To get those items back to people is really fantastic.
0:01:17 > 0:01:23I think the owners might be crying in happy tears.
0:01:23 > 0:01:27The police are amazing. I am forever indebted to them.
0:01:27 > 0:01:30This is Robbed...
0:01:30 > 0:01:32Raided... Reunited.
0:01:32 > 0:01:33Thanks very much.
0:01:33 > 0:01:36I never thought I'd see this again.
0:01:36 > 0:01:39I thank them from the bottom of my heart.
0:01:50 > 0:01:51Coming up...
0:01:51 > 0:01:56The police are determined to catch the thieves who looted a family's new home.
0:01:56 > 0:01:58The biggest thing is that somebody has been in my house.
0:01:58 > 0:02:03Someone has been in my bedroom, someone has been through my house, ransacking.
0:02:06 > 0:02:10The Surrey Police helicopter traps two suspicious men making a run for it.
0:02:15 > 0:02:21And a raid on a wanted burglar uncovers an unlikely tool of the trade.
0:02:21 > 0:02:25They put it through the letterbox and they'll grab the keys.
0:02:28 > 0:02:31It's 12.30pm at Staines Police Station.
0:02:31 > 0:02:39Detective Constable Dion O'Shea and learner DC Sonya Hudson of Staines CID's anti-burglary team
0:02:39 > 0:02:40have received an urgent call.
0:02:40 > 0:02:45They're on their way to a burglary reported in a nearby village.
0:02:45 > 0:02:48The occupant of the house left this morning at 8.30,
0:02:48 > 0:02:51and he's returned home at 12.10,
0:02:51 > 0:02:55and found the premises had been entered into.
0:02:55 > 0:03:01So what we need to do is we need to see what's been stolen and find out what we need to do forensics wise.
0:03:01 > 0:03:04This quiet, secluded area, four miles from the town centre,
0:03:04 > 0:03:08is an unusual destination for Staines CID.
0:03:08 > 0:03:10It's very, very rural as you can see.
0:03:10 > 0:03:14The likelihood of us having anybody that's witnessed this
0:03:14 > 0:03:18or any CCTV opportunities are probably fairly low.
0:03:23 > 0:03:24There we go.
0:03:26 > 0:03:29Anne Griffiths is waiting outside.
0:03:29 > 0:03:33We've just called the locksmith as we didn't know how he's got into the house.
0:03:33 > 0:03:36- We want to make it secure as quickly as possible. - Yes, I understand.
0:03:36 > 0:03:41Anne had a suspicious encounter with a man three days earlier.
0:03:41 > 0:03:43She's now wondering if this was significant.
0:03:43 > 0:03:47- OK.- We were getting rid of the cooker, someone stopped in their van and said,
0:03:47 > 0:03:50"Oh, we'll take that away." He asked us what work we were doing on the house,
0:03:50 > 0:03:53- he was quite a young guy, in his 20s.- OK.
0:03:53 > 0:03:56This is the first day the house has been empty since then.
0:03:56 > 0:03:59The burglars may have staked out the house,
0:03:59 > 0:04:01waiting for the chance to strike.
0:04:02 > 0:04:07The police need to determine how the thief or thieves got in.
0:04:07 > 0:04:10Anne's son Matt was first on the scene.
0:04:10 > 0:04:11Who discovered the burglary?
0:04:11 > 0:04:17- That's me. I came home and noticed the TV was missing.- Right, OK.
0:04:17 > 0:04:19- They just kicked the lock in for some reason.- Oh, OK.
0:04:19 > 0:04:24DC O'Shea examines the front door for signs of damage.
0:04:24 > 0:04:28Basically, they used a screwdriver. They've got some marks here.
0:04:28 > 0:04:31They've used it, literally, to get the screwdriver in and pop open the door.
0:04:31 > 0:04:33It's just popped open.
0:04:35 > 0:04:38Inside, the back door also appears damaged.
0:04:38 > 0:04:43- Right, OK.- Did you say something was broken?- The key. And the lock.
0:04:43 > 0:04:44All right, yeah, I see.
0:04:44 > 0:04:47That'll be to stop anybody getting in while they're here.
0:04:47 > 0:04:51- OK, where was...? The items that have been taken, where were they? - TV over there.
0:04:51 > 0:04:54I mean, I've only been home about 20 minutes, sort of looking through.
0:04:54 > 0:04:57Did you say you had cash in this property?
0:04:57 > 0:05:00- There was cash upstairs in the bedroom.- Is that gone?- Yeah.
0:05:00 > 0:05:04It's becoming clear just how much was taken.
0:05:04 > 0:05:08The police must check what's missing from each room of the house.
0:05:08 > 0:05:12Yeah, they broke that. They kind of shoved things in this room.
0:05:16 > 0:05:23- Erm, so the laptop was in there.- OK. - These were out, in there as well.
0:05:23 > 0:05:26Was the cash...? It was in here, was it? It was with the laptop?
0:05:26 > 0:05:32The thieves have left the family's home in a state of disarray.
0:05:32 > 0:05:35They've also searched the sons' bedrooms,
0:05:35 > 0:05:38but as far as we can see at the moment, they can't see anything has been stolen.
0:05:38 > 0:05:43But, as you can see, they have pulled everything out the wardrobes and just discarded it.
0:05:43 > 0:05:47So far, two TVs, three laptops
0:05:47 > 0:05:49and a large amount of cash have been confirmed missing.
0:05:49 > 0:05:54The family only moved into the house two weeks ago.
0:05:54 > 0:05:57For me, the biggest thing is that someone has been in my house.
0:05:57 > 0:06:01It's not so much the possessions they've taken, because they can be replaced.
0:06:01 > 0:06:04It's really the sort of personal invasion.
0:06:04 > 0:06:10Someone's been in my bedroom, someone has been through my house, ransacking.
0:06:10 > 0:06:13And that is really what I think I am going to find upsetting,
0:06:13 > 0:06:15and the security for my house.
0:06:16 > 0:06:20Don't know. I feel very vulnerable. So, yeah, range of emotions,
0:06:20 > 0:06:24and now it's coming out as a bit upset.
0:06:26 > 0:06:29It's an hour since the emergency call came in.
0:06:30 > 0:06:34A forensics officer arrives to examine the house for prints and DNA.
0:06:34 > 0:06:40Anne's partner Gary Whitmarsh arrives to find his new home has been robbed and ransacked.
0:06:40 > 0:06:46We've not long been here. As you can see, we're sort of in the process of unpacking still, had work going on.
0:06:46 > 0:06:48You know, electrical, plumbing, all sorts of...
0:06:48 > 0:06:52We haven't really had a chance to settle in, but it's very unnerving
0:06:52 > 0:06:56that you've only just arrived somewhere and you're immediately broken into.
0:06:56 > 0:07:01And while surveying the damage, Gary discovers items of huge personal value are missing.
0:07:01 > 0:07:06There was a little pink case which was my mother's.
0:07:06 > 0:07:11My mother passed away and some of her jewellery...
0:07:11 > 0:07:15And also some letters from my grandmother to her in there as well, so that was all in the...
0:07:15 > 0:07:17And has that gone, that little pink...?
0:07:17 > 0:07:19- Yeah, it is the whole laptop. - Oh, it was all together? OK.
0:07:19 > 0:07:21It was all in the bag, and also my wallet.
0:07:23 > 0:07:27These letters and jewellery were irreplaceable family heirlooms.
0:07:27 > 0:07:29Jewellery is money, it's expensive,
0:07:29 > 0:07:33and it's personal things behind it, because you know if it's an engagement ring
0:07:33 > 0:07:37passed down through the family, you're never going to replace those if you don't see them again.
0:07:37 > 0:07:41For me, the writings are just as important as the jewellery,
0:07:41 > 0:07:44because, you know, it's handwritten. It is very personal, you know.
0:07:44 > 0:07:47So, yeah, I'll be very sad not to have those,
0:07:47 > 0:07:52because I've kept them for the reasons that you want to pass them on through generations.
0:07:52 > 0:07:54If they can be found that would be brilliant,
0:07:54 > 0:07:59and it would be lovely to get them all back, but who knows. I don't know how it works.
0:07:59 > 0:08:05The first eight hours following a burglary represent the best window of opportunity for the police
0:08:05 > 0:08:07to catch those responsible.
0:08:07 > 0:08:11To stand any chance of recovering the family's possessions,
0:08:11 > 0:08:14the team needs to establish some solid leads.
0:08:14 > 0:08:19The forensic officer continues to go through each room searching for clues.
0:08:19 > 0:08:23PC Emma Nuttall is on hand to take a statement from Anne.
0:08:23 > 0:08:26- What did you think was there? How much, roughly?- Roughly- BLEEP.
0:08:26 > 0:08:29I'm starting to feel quite angry.
0:08:29 > 0:08:37If I got hold of them... Quite a few expletives came out earlier.
0:08:37 > 0:08:40Despite their efforts, there is little to go on for the police.
0:08:42 > 0:08:46But one dramatic discovery could change the course of the entire investigation.
0:08:51 > 0:08:55Basically, there's been an alien object left at the property.
0:08:55 > 0:08:59It doesn't belong to anybody that lives here and it's a mobile phone.
0:08:59 > 0:09:03It's an incredible find.
0:09:03 > 0:09:05And the screensaver is a picture.
0:09:05 > 0:09:10The picture on the phone is of a local man already known to the police.
0:09:13 > 0:09:17Obviously, we are very keen to speak to him, why his phone is in this address.
0:09:17 > 0:09:20They suspect this is the same man Anne saw outside their home three days ago.
0:09:20 > 0:09:22And you can have a look for it there.
0:09:22 > 0:09:2740362 to Sergeant Parry, Staines CID.
0:09:27 > 0:09:29And when PC Nuttall runs a check on the man,
0:09:29 > 0:09:32they get another remarkable break in the case.
0:09:32 > 0:09:36There's currently a warrant on the address. Officers are there now,
0:09:36 > 0:09:40so we're just time to get hold of the officers who are there so we can possibly
0:09:40 > 0:09:43add our enquiries to their enquiries.
0:09:43 > 0:09:46It just so happens another police unit were doing a warrant
0:09:46 > 0:09:49at the address of the person we think this phone belongs to.
0:09:49 > 0:09:52They weren't doing a warrant for this incident,
0:09:52 > 0:09:54it was just a coincidence they were there at the time.
0:09:54 > 0:09:57But can the police capitalise?
0:09:57 > 0:10:02While PC Nuttall stays in contact with the warrant team at the man's address,
0:10:02 > 0:10:07the phone is analysed for forensic evidence further linking the suspect to the crime scene.
0:10:08 > 0:10:10An update comes through.
0:10:10 > 0:10:14RADIO: 'At that address but they're not here.'
0:10:14 > 0:10:17The man is not at home.
0:10:17 > 0:10:21It's a setback but DC O'Shea remains confident.
0:10:21 > 0:10:22I'd be quite hopeful at the moment
0:10:22 > 0:10:25because of the phone and we've got a named suspect,
0:10:25 > 0:10:28so, OK, we've been round the address and he's not there at the moment
0:10:28 > 0:10:30but attempts will be continue to be made,
0:10:30 > 0:10:33and hopefully if we can get him soon.
0:10:33 > 0:10:36If it's him, we may be able recover some of the property.
0:10:36 > 0:10:39The team make another discovery that may help match
0:10:39 > 0:10:42the suspect to the scene.
0:10:42 > 0:10:45There's no post been delivered to the family today
0:10:45 > 0:10:46and nobody's brought that in.
0:10:46 > 0:10:49But it's been found on the coffee table in the lounge.
0:10:49 > 0:10:53It would seem to be a footprint, a partial trainer mark
0:10:53 > 0:10:56or, you know, shoe mark on there.
0:10:56 > 0:10:59The forensic officer uses electrostatic lifting
0:10:59 > 0:11:01to draw out the full shoe print,
0:11:01 > 0:11:04which may not be visible to the naked eye.
0:11:05 > 0:11:08By passing an electric charge through the foil,
0:11:08 > 0:11:11the shoe print is transferred off the envelope
0:11:11 > 0:11:14onto the back of the foil, ready for analysis.
0:11:14 > 0:11:16- Let's see.- Bit at the end, yeah.
0:11:16 > 0:11:20You've actually got in the dust the whole rest of the footprint.
0:11:22 > 0:11:25With the phone and footprint as evidence,
0:11:25 > 0:11:27Staines CID are determined to solve this case -
0:11:27 > 0:11:30especially having seen first-hand the emotional trauma
0:11:30 > 0:11:33this family is having to deal with.
0:11:33 > 0:11:36It's going to take a while to just get used to what's happened
0:11:36 > 0:11:38and get over it.
0:11:38 > 0:11:40It's a new house. We've only just moved in.
0:11:40 > 0:11:43It's taken off the gloss of moving in and having your own property,
0:11:43 > 0:11:46having your own house. Not good.
0:11:47 > 0:11:50It's not nice for anybody to come home
0:11:50 > 0:11:52and know that that's all happened,
0:11:52 > 0:11:55because everybody is sad, everybody is unhappy.
0:11:55 > 0:11:59You're all thinking similar things along the same lines - why us?
0:11:59 > 0:12:04Um, why can't people just go out and work like we do?
0:12:04 > 0:12:08Why do they have to rely on stealing other people's property,
0:12:08 > 0:12:11and causing damage in many instances,
0:12:11 > 0:12:13um, when it's, you know,
0:12:13 > 0:12:17it's not the way we should be living in this world.
0:12:17 > 0:12:20Later in the programme, the police make a breakthrough
0:12:20 > 0:12:24in the search for Gary and Ann's stolen property.
0:12:24 > 0:12:28I must say that this is part of the job that means so much
0:12:28 > 0:12:30is to give this property back to these people.
0:12:30 > 0:12:34And the couple is reunited with some cherished family items.
0:12:34 > 0:12:39Some pictures of my mum and dad and sister. It's nice to have the memories back.
0:12:42 > 0:12:45Across the country, police are taking the fight to burglars.
0:12:45 > 0:12:48For Surrey police,
0:12:48 > 0:12:52helicopter surveillance is a powerful tool at their disposal.
0:12:52 > 0:12:53Its hi-tech infra-red camera
0:12:53 > 0:12:56means there's nowhere to hide for the criminals.
0:12:58 > 0:13:0111.30pm. A vigilant neighbour
0:13:01 > 0:13:05raises the alarm of a burglary in progress at a Guildford family home.
0:13:19 > 0:13:22Before police officers reach the house,
0:13:22 > 0:13:26the thieves escape, taking with them several expensive items.
0:13:27 > 0:13:31These criminals hadn't reckoned on the South East Air Support Unit
0:13:31 > 0:13:32responding to the call.
0:13:32 > 0:13:37DC James West of Guildford CID takes us through what happened next.
0:13:37 > 0:13:40You can see them coming into shot where the camera picks them up straight away.
0:13:40 > 0:13:43And they're walking away about 30 yards
0:13:43 > 0:13:46from the property that was broken into.
0:13:46 > 0:13:49What you'll see next is the officer coming round the corner
0:13:49 > 0:13:52and the two persons run away from the officer.
0:13:52 > 0:13:54He calls out to them that he's a police officer
0:13:54 > 0:13:57and for them to stop and they run from the officer.
0:14:05 > 0:14:08They split around this block of flats
0:14:08 > 0:14:10and the officer is obviously chasing them
0:14:10 > 0:14:12but the helicopter has them in his sights.
0:14:12 > 0:14:16One of them has ducked down behind what's probably a fence or a wall.
0:14:16 > 0:14:18Here is where the officer comes round the corner
0:14:18 > 0:14:20and the first man is arrested.
0:14:20 > 0:14:24The camera from the helicopter then stays with the second male.
0:14:31 > 0:14:33He's walking up this road, he's been followed all the way
0:14:33 > 0:14:36from what we would call the attack premises.
0:14:36 > 0:14:40With the eye in the sky directing the officers on the ground,
0:14:40 > 0:14:42there was no getting away for this man.
0:14:47 > 0:14:49Moments later, he was apprehended.
0:14:55 > 0:14:58It seemed two more burglars would be off the streets.
0:14:58 > 0:15:01However, as no stolen goods were found on either man,
0:15:01 > 0:15:02both were released.
0:15:06 > 0:15:09Now, crucial new evidence has emerged,
0:15:09 > 0:15:12linking one of the men to the crime scene.
0:15:12 > 0:15:15CID detective Russell Cannon
0:15:15 > 0:15:17is briefing his team at Guildford police station.
0:15:17 > 0:15:22They're gearing up for an early-morning raid on the suspect's Surrey home.
0:15:22 > 0:15:26The outstanding property is a laptop, white iPod,
0:15:26 > 0:15:30a Verbatim external hard drive, Fuji camera,
0:15:30 > 0:15:31um, and a set of books.
0:15:33 > 0:15:36The team have a warrant to arrest the suspect
0:15:36 > 0:15:39and search his home for the stolen goods.
0:15:39 > 0:15:40Any questions?
0:15:43 > 0:15:47It's 7.50am.
0:15:47 > 0:15:50DC James West is leading this morning's operation.
0:15:54 > 0:15:58The address is 12 minutes away on a quiet residential street.
0:16:03 > 0:16:05As it's early morning, for the neighbours' sake,
0:16:05 > 0:16:08the police try a low-key approach to getting in.
0:16:14 > 0:16:18The other two raid officers are positioned at the back of the house,
0:16:18 > 0:16:21cutting off the suspect's escape route.
0:16:24 > 0:16:26There's no answer at the door at the moment
0:16:26 > 0:16:28so we're going to force entry.
0:16:28 > 0:16:31We've got a warrant to gain entry.
0:16:31 > 0:16:35It's the police. Last chance, else we'll be forcing the door.
0:16:35 > 0:16:36Come to the door now, please.
0:16:36 > 0:16:39Ah, at last.
0:16:39 > 0:16:44The occupants of the house have decided opening the door is the better option.
0:16:47 > 0:16:50The raid team make the arrest.
0:16:50 > 0:16:51The burglary took place...
0:16:51 > 0:16:55You've obviously been arrested before for that offence. All right?
0:16:55 > 0:16:59- Yeah.- Something else has come to light as part of the investigation,
0:16:59 > 0:17:02so therefore you are being further arrested for that offence.
0:17:02 > 0:17:06He's remarkably calm for a man being arrested in his own bed.
0:17:06 > 0:17:08Can you shut the door, please?
0:17:08 > 0:17:11Can you pull the front door to a minute?
0:17:13 > 0:17:15The arrest has been made with a minimum of fuss.
0:17:15 > 0:17:19Now the team can concentrate on the search for stolen items.
0:17:21 > 0:17:2515 minutes later, they find something of interest.
0:17:25 > 0:17:30- Again. - Yeah, I'll do that if you want.
0:17:30 > 0:17:35DC West is suspicious about the origin of a silver necklace found in a wardrobe.
0:17:37 > 0:17:40He phones the station to check it out.
0:17:40 > 0:17:45They've recovered a necklace off the female here.
0:17:45 > 0:17:49She says she can account for where it came from. it's in a small bag.
0:17:49 > 0:17:53Um, it's, er, heart shaped with flowers on the front.
0:17:53 > 0:17:55Silver.
0:17:55 > 0:17:58Describing jewellery over the phone isn't easy.
0:17:58 > 0:18:03Luckily, DC West has another tool at the modern policeman's disposal -
0:18:03 > 0:18:05his phone.
0:18:08 > 0:18:10I mean, that's really the first time I've done that,
0:18:10 > 0:18:13sending it from my phone, cos that's my personal phone, sending a picture.
0:18:13 > 0:18:17But with the technology we have today it's a much easier way
0:18:17 > 0:18:20of sending it through to the guy in the office
0:18:20 > 0:18:22who's going to do some checks.
0:18:22 > 0:18:24An unorthodox approach.
0:18:24 > 0:18:27But five minutes later, an officer at the station calls back
0:18:27 > 0:18:33with a possible match - to an item stolen during another burglary.
0:18:33 > 0:18:36He's found on our system a similar...item
0:18:36 > 0:18:39that possibly could have come from a burglary in the Woking area.
0:18:39 > 0:18:42So we'll be seizing that.
0:18:42 > 0:18:46We won't arrest anyone for that at the moment just because
0:18:46 > 0:18:49we need to really prove that that's come from a burglary first.
0:18:49 > 0:18:52But we'll be taking that with us.
0:18:53 > 0:18:55With one suspicious item in the bag,
0:18:55 > 0:18:59the team soon makes another interesting discovery.
0:18:59 > 0:19:01We found this in the cupboard in the address.
0:19:01 > 0:19:04Now, this just collects litter.
0:19:04 > 0:19:08But it can also be used, and is used, as an implement by burglars.
0:19:08 > 0:19:10They put it through the letter box.
0:19:10 > 0:19:15And they'll grab the keys if they're on the other side of the door
0:19:15 > 0:19:18and, obviously, then they can gain entry to people's addresses.
0:19:18 > 0:19:23So it is a tool that burglars do use and a way of getting into addresses.
0:19:23 > 0:19:25Obviously, there may be a legitimate reason
0:19:25 > 0:19:28and he may just like going around collecting litter.
0:19:28 > 0:19:30To counter this threat,
0:19:30 > 0:19:34police advise us never to leave our house keys in locks
0:19:34 > 0:19:37and to keep all car and door keys out of sight
0:19:37 > 0:19:39and reach from the letter box.
0:19:39 > 0:19:42The suspect is keeping quiet.
0:19:42 > 0:19:45He seems to be no stranger to police procedure.
0:19:45 > 0:19:49He's fairly relaxed. He's been arrested many times for similar offences.
0:19:49 > 0:19:53He's used to the searches that are being conducted at the moment.
0:19:53 > 0:19:57No items stolen from the burglary are found at the man's home.
0:20:00 > 0:20:02But with their prime suspect safely back in custody,
0:20:02 > 0:20:06it's been a productive morning for the team.
0:20:07 > 0:20:10Repeat offenders already known to the police are responsible
0:20:10 > 0:20:14for a large proportion of all burglaries committed each year.
0:20:15 > 0:20:17This man has many previous convictions
0:20:17 > 0:20:20and will be questioned at length back at the station.
0:20:26 > 0:20:29Earlier on Robbed, Raided, Reunited,
0:20:29 > 0:20:32we saw the shocking aftermath of a daring daylight burglary.
0:20:34 > 0:20:37Gary and Anne's family home had been robbed
0:20:37 > 0:20:39just two weeks after they moved in.
0:20:39 > 0:20:42I think, to me, the biggest thing is that somebody's been in my house,
0:20:42 > 0:20:44someone's been in my bedroom,
0:20:44 > 0:20:46someone's been throughout my house, ransacking.
0:20:46 > 0:20:48The thieves got away with
0:20:48 > 0:20:52several expensive items and also a large quantity of cash.
0:20:52 > 0:20:54What did you think was there? How much?
0:20:54 > 0:20:55- I would...- BLEEP.
0:20:57 > 0:21:00The burglars also took Gary's precious collection
0:21:00 > 0:21:02of family letters and photographs.
0:21:02 > 0:21:04I'll be very sad not to have those
0:21:04 > 0:21:08because I've kept them for the reasons that you want to pass them on through generations.
0:21:08 > 0:21:12But the criminals made a crucial mistake.
0:21:12 > 0:21:14They left a mobile phone at the crime scene
0:21:14 > 0:21:16containing a picture leading the police straight to a suspect.
0:21:16 > 0:21:20Hopefully, if we can get him soon, if it's him,
0:21:20 > 0:21:22we may be able to recover some of the property.
0:21:23 > 0:21:25It's now a week later.
0:21:25 > 0:21:28Detective Constable Dion O'Shea and Learner DC Sonya Hudson
0:21:28 > 0:21:32have made two arrests, including the owner of the phone.
0:21:33 > 0:21:37No trace of the stolen items has yet been found
0:21:37 > 0:21:40and it looks unlikely Gary will see his family mementoes again.
0:21:42 > 0:21:46But some items have been found outside a retirement home,
0:21:46 > 0:21:48which may be linked to the burglary.
0:21:48 > 0:21:50This property has been returned to us
0:21:50 > 0:21:51by a member of a the public.
0:21:51 > 0:21:54We believe that these items belong to the burglary
0:21:54 > 0:21:56where the mobile phone was left.
0:21:56 > 0:22:00The family need to come in and just identify the items
0:22:00 > 0:22:01as belonging to them,
0:22:01 > 0:22:05and, hopefully, we can bring some closure and hand the items back.
0:22:05 > 0:22:10I must say that this is part of the job that means so much
0:22:10 > 0:22:11is to give property back to people.
0:22:11 > 0:22:14Because it means an awful lot to them.
0:22:14 > 0:22:17- Hi. I'm from CID.- Hi. I'm Gary.
0:22:17 > 0:22:21- I don't know if you remember. I was at the house the first time you reported it.- Yeah.
0:22:21 > 0:22:25- Do you want to come through? - OK, thank you. - Have a look at some property.
0:22:26 > 0:22:30Some of the discarded property has suffered water damage.
0:22:30 > 0:22:32Let's go through all this property
0:22:32 > 0:22:36and hopefully there'll be things in here that belong to yourselves,
0:22:36 > 0:22:38and... But we'll just go through them one at a time.
0:22:38 > 0:22:41Right, um...
0:22:41 > 0:22:46- Yeah, that's my dad's letter opener from years gone by.- OK.
0:22:46 > 0:22:48So quite sentimental for you.
0:22:48 > 0:22:51Yeah, it is. I think it was given to him by my grandfather.
0:22:51 > 0:22:55So yeah. It's nice to have something back.
0:22:55 > 0:23:02Amongst these recovered items are some of Gary's most treasured possessions.
0:23:02 > 0:23:05You've also got pictures of my mum and dad and sister.
0:23:07 > 0:23:10That's the important things.
0:23:10 > 0:23:12My sister, my father and my mother have all passed away
0:23:12 > 0:23:14so that's really important to me.
0:23:14 > 0:23:17OK. That's really good that you've got these back.
0:23:17 > 0:23:20There are some important receipts the couple need to present
0:23:20 > 0:23:23to their insurance company.
0:23:23 > 0:23:24- That's the Apple...- Yeah. - ..receipt.
0:23:24 > 0:23:28That's quite good. Again, that will help you, won't it?
0:23:28 > 0:23:32I know it's not having your items returned but that will perhaps make it a little easier
0:23:32 > 0:23:35whilst you're dealing with insurance and things.
0:23:35 > 0:23:38Despite being left undiscovered outside overnight,
0:23:38 > 0:23:41one of Gary's cherished letters has survived unscathed.
0:23:42 > 0:23:48You can just imagine them going through this and slinging things...
0:23:48 > 0:23:50Yeah.
0:23:50 > 0:23:52That's very nice to get back.
0:23:52 > 0:23:56- 26.4.1954.- Wow.
0:23:56 > 0:24:01When my mother was 21. This is from my aunt to my mother.

0:24:05 > 0:24:08"What a pleasure it has been to have you for 21 years,
0:24:08 > 0:24:11"not only as a sister, but as a pal,
0:24:11 > 0:24:14"and someone to share my joys and sorrows with.
0:24:14 > 0:24:20"We have always shared what we have had and been glad to."

0:24:34 > 0:24:38"I only have one sister but, believe me,
0:24:38 > 0:24:41"I would rather just have the one like you than have five or six.
0:24:41 > 0:24:44"If you need any help and are in any trouble,
0:24:44 > 0:24:48"I will always be there ready to stand by you and help you.
0:24:48 > 0:24:51"For there is always a corner in my heart reserved just for you.
0:24:51 > 0:24:54"God bless you always. Your loving sister Joyce."
0:24:56 > 0:24:59Expensive things, nice that they are,
0:24:59 > 0:25:02but sometimes it's the personal ones that have been passed on through generations.
