:00:23. > :00:27.Burglaries are on the increase. is a real, for all of us. Taxi-

:00:27. > :00:34.drivers, emergency services and villains are moving around in their

:00:34. > :00:40.vehicles at night. Thieves are taking our cherish their limbs.

:00:40. > :00:45.your home is your sanctuary. No one should be in your home. Items

:00:45. > :00:53.impossible to replace. Why take away things that are important to

:00:53. > :00:57.people. The it is hard to take. They have no scruples. But these

:00:57. > :01:05.prized possessions are often recovered. The police are on our

:01:05. > :01:14.side., out of the door. Police with a warrant. Spare shoelace units

:01:14. > :01:21.across the UK. They are working with the latest technology. And the

:01:21. > :01:26.good citizens among stars. stopped to make sure that the whole

:01:26. > :01:32.family was all right. They will track down the burglars and get us

:01:32. > :01:42.back our stolen goods. They took so much trouble. When they said they

:01:42. > :01:42.

:01:42. > :01:52.were coming round with it, it was fantastic. It was really lucky.

:01:52. > :01:56.

:01:57. > :02:00.This is Robbed, Raided, Reunited. So rewarding, such a happy day.

:02:00. > :02:07.today's programme, the man caught on CCTV selling a stolen car to a

:02:07. > :02:12.scrapyard. When we get the recovered vehicles, it is sometimes

:02:12. > :02:14.awkward to link these people to the broker raised, but as soon as we

:02:14. > :02:17.get an identification, we will arrest him.

:02:17. > :02:26.Local residents make a citizen's arrest to stop a neighbour's house

:02:26. > :02:29.from being broken into. I grabbed one. I put him in a lock.

:02:29. > :02:34.I quite enjoyed that. And we reunite a couple with a car

:02:34. > :02:39.stolen while they were on holiday. The car had been parked on the

:02:39. > :02:43.driveway when we went on holiday, when we came back, the car was no

:02:43. > :02:46.longer here. A holiday should be a time when you

:02:46. > :02:56.can relax and forget about the cares of the world, but they are

:02:56. > :03:01.

:03:02. > :03:04.also a time for burglars to break When Graham and Linda Beams from

:03:04. > :03:09.Essex came home in December from a holiday in Argentina, they

:03:09. > :03:15.discovered they had been burgled. We came to the front door and it

:03:15. > :03:24.was opened by our son, Gregory. He said, we have some bad news, you

:03:24. > :03:28.had better come in. You have been burgled and the car has been stolen.

:03:28. > :03:31.The Beams asked their son and daughter to keep an eye on the

:03:31. > :03:36.house and suggested they use the car to make it look like someone

:03:36. > :03:41.was coming and going from the house. Our daughter arrived here on Monday

:03:41. > :03:49.and discovered the car had gone. She rang our son Gregory to see if

:03:49. > :03:51.he had borrowed it. Greg said he had not borrowed it. She contacted

:03:51. > :03:59.the police. The thieves helped themselves to

:03:59. > :04:03.other valuables. I had several jewellery boxes here.

:04:03. > :04:08.The thing that upset me the most was the loss of my mother's

:04:08. > :04:13.engagement ring. It would not have had a lot of value, but to me it

:04:13. > :04:22.was a great loss. When you think, someone has been in here, a

:04:22. > :04:25.stranger, going through your things, it is upsetting.

:04:25. > :04:28.When checking through house, the Beams' daughter, Abigail, made a

:04:28. > :04:34.shocking discovery. A knife in her parents' bed which the burglars had

:04:34. > :04:40.taken from the kitchen. I think she found it like this, it was lying

:04:40. > :04:44.there. It is rather sobering to think that had we been in the house,

:04:44. > :04:48.they had come upstairs with a knife, and they had come through the door

:04:48. > :04:53.in the middle of the night, brandishing that, it would have

:04:53. > :05:03.been scary. The car was the most expensive item

:05:03. > :05:07.

:05:07. > :05:09.stolen. We think that they probably got in through the front door. The

:05:09. > :05:15.car keys were on a little table there.

:05:15. > :05:20.The thieves made their getaway in the family car. It is the

:05:20. > :05:26.inconvenience, having to get another car, how much we might get

:05:26. > :05:31.for this car, what sort of state would it be any fate was found. If

:05:31. > :05:34.we got it back, would we actually want to use it again? There is that

:05:34. > :05:37.element to it. In the first quarter of 2011, over

:05:37. > :05:41.a third of cars stolen were from the owner's home address or close

:05:41. > :05:48.by. Nearly 20% of thefts involved breaking into properties to obtain

:05:48. > :05:54.the keys. Officer Christian Forbes from Southend CID has handled many

:05:54. > :05:57.cases of stolen cars. Today he receives a call from a scrapyard.

:05:58. > :06:07.They were sold a car for very little money and have reported it.

:06:08. > :06:08.

:06:08. > :06:13.Christian inspects the car at the recovery agent. We have the officer

:06:13. > :06:20.at the scrap dealer's at the moment, making inquiries into who brought

:06:20. > :06:27.TV:. They were offered to his hundred and 50 for this car. --

:06:27. > :06:29.they were offered 250 for this car. It is worth 5,000. That is well

:06:29. > :06:39.below Standard police procedure is that

:06:39. > :06:42.

:06:42. > :06:46.forensics carry out tests on the car. I am wearing gloves so that I

:06:46. > :06:53.do not ruined the evidence. I am looking for containers or anything

:06:53. > :06:58.that we might find DNA on. I am looking at the vehicle for any

:06:58. > :07:03.paperwork or documents that might lead us to a suspect. Newer cars

:07:03. > :07:08.are fitted with an immobiliser or an alarm. So they are harder to

:07:08. > :07:13.steal. They are stilled by in -- they are stolen by criminals

:07:13. > :07:17.breaking into the victim's address and stealing the car keys. Breaking

:07:17. > :07:20.into a house to get the keys for a car has become much more common in

:07:20. > :07:28.the last decade. Police started calling it a Millennium Burglary.

:07:28. > :07:36.The usual type of vehicle that is subjected to this crime at are the

:07:36. > :07:41.German vehicles, BMWs, Volkswagens. The plates are changed and their

:07:41. > :07:46.soul to innocent buyers. But this one was stolen to commit crime, p

:07:46. > :07:52.use until they got bored with it. The police now have to identify the

:07:52. > :07:55.owner of the vehicle and return it to them. Vital information has come

:07:55. > :07:58.through from the scrapyard. CCTV clearly shows the man who sold the

:07:58. > :08:01.stolen car. He also has the log book of the car, meaning the police

:08:01. > :08:05.can identify its true owner. A quick check with the DVLA confirms

:08:05. > :08:15.this to be the Beams' car. PC Forbes rings Graham Beam

:08:15. > :08:23.straightaway. Hello, it is PC Christian Forbes. I have some good

:08:23. > :08:29.news for you. Your vehicle that was stolen has been found. Yes, it has.

:08:29. > :08:34.They tried to sell it to a scrapyard. The vehicle itself,

:08:34. > :08:39.there is no damage to it. It is a little dirty. It looks like it

:08:39. > :08:46.needs a good clean, but other than that, it seems like a straight

:08:46. > :08:53.vehicle. There is no damage to it. It still needs to be tested by the

:08:53. > :08:57.scenes of crime officers. Just out of curiosity, when the bloke when

:08:57. > :09:07.Dane to sell your vehicle to the scrap merchant, he had the lot

:09:07. > :09:09.

:09:09. > :09:18.-- he had the log book as well. Now police must track down who

:09:18. > :09:24.illegally sold the car. We have got the CCTV footage from the scrapyard.

:09:24. > :09:32.These are still images. It shows the man going into the scrap

:09:32. > :09:39.dealer's. He has hit head covered up. He has gloves and a jacket. --

:09:39. > :09:44.he has his head covered up. Because he is wearing gloves, we may not

:09:44. > :09:46.find any forensics in the car. But we will try anyway. He has the log

:09:46. > :09:52.book in his hand. These images will be immediately

:09:52. > :09:58.circulated to neighbouring police forces and local media. We have got

:09:58. > :10:03.an invoice. This man has used the victim's name. He has also put the

:10:03. > :10:07.same address that is on the log book. He has also signed the

:10:07. > :10:09.document to say that it is his vehicle to sell.

:10:09. > :10:12.Filling in Mr Beam's name and address immediately makes the

:10:12. > :10:17.suspect guilty of deception but PC Forbes wants to connect him

:10:17. > :10:22.directly to the burglary at the Beams' house. When we get be

:10:22. > :10:28.recovered vehicles, it is sometimes awkward to link these people to the

:10:28. > :10:34.burglaries. This man has sold the vehicle for 250, which is not a

:10:34. > :10:37.lot of money. As soon as we get an identification, we will arrest him

:10:37. > :10:42.and take fingerprints because he may be linked to the burglary

:10:42. > :10:49.itself. $$NEWLINE. Later on Robbed, Raided, Reunited, PC Forbes finds

:10:49. > :10:54.the suspect from the scrapyard. have been identified on CCTV as

:10:54. > :11:02.stealing a car from this address. And the Beams are reunited with

:11:02. > :11:05.their car. This is great, we are very lucky.

:11:05. > :11:09.The popular Essex resort of Southend on Sea has a population of

:11:09. > :11:12.almost 200,000. But like many towns in the UK, there are always some

:11:12. > :11:21.who want to spoil it. However, in one neighbourhood, the residents

:11:21. > :11:25.have decided enough is enough. is that saying? An Englishman's

:11:25. > :11:28.home is his castle. And you have scumbags like that.

:11:29. > :11:38.Early evening in the residential streets of Southend, a 999 call has

:11:39. > :12:01.

:12:01. > :12:04.Because the area has recently been hit with a number of break-ins,

:12:04. > :12:12.local residents have been keeping a watchful eye on their homes and

:12:12. > :12:15.spotted two suspicious men. As police units converge on the scene,

:12:15. > :12:22.including an undercover officer, a uniformed PC brings them up to date

:12:22. > :12:27.with what has happened. These gentlemen here, various different

:12:27. > :12:31.neighbours, they have watched these lads, pure and knock-on various

:12:31. > :12:37.different doors. They came to this one and knocked on the door several

:12:37. > :12:42.times and sat there. They quickly knocked on that neighbour's aura,

:12:42. > :12:47.and said, could you phone the police quickly? In the meantime, as

:12:47. > :12:50.he went to the end of the garden, and covered the back.

:12:50. > :12:53.Worried that the two men might make their getaway before the police

:12:53. > :13:03.arrived, local residents Stephen Gymer and Lee Robinson decided to

:13:03. > :13:05.

:13:05. > :13:12.lie in wait for them. -- Sean Gymer. We were at this side of the gate,

:13:12. > :13:16.and he came men from the gate. wanted to see what they would do.

:13:16. > :13:24.They did split up, one of them went that way and the other one went for

:13:24. > :13:30.the gate. I grabbed one, and Lee Grad the other one. We piled them

:13:30. > :13:35.to the ground. He does a bit of judo, this one does. They were not

:13:35. > :13:41.going anywhere. I enjoyed that. The two suspects were held by Lee

:13:41. > :13:44.and Steve until they could be put into a police patrol car. -- Lee

:13:44. > :13:48.and Sean. This was a successful citizen's arrest, as outlined by PC

:13:49. > :13:53.Mark Sawyer of the Essex Robbery Squad. As members of the public,

:13:53. > :13:57.you have the ability to make a citizen's arrest. Everyone can

:13:57. > :14:02.arrest somebody, but there are certain criteria for making that

:14:02. > :14:06.arrest. Members of the public have to see a crime being committed for

:14:06. > :14:09.them to make an arrest, whereas the police can arrest somebody on

:14:09. > :14:12.suspicion. With the two suspects safely held

:14:12. > :14:18.in the car, the police can now investigate how they got into the

:14:18. > :14:24.house, and what, if anything, they might have stolen. There are gloves

:14:24. > :14:32.in the side alleyway. They have been discarded. One of the charts

:14:32. > :14:35.has a holdall and his back with a screwdriver and what not. -- one of

:14:35. > :14:38.the chaps. The SOCO or Scene of Crime Officer,

:14:38. > :14:41.who has since gone undercover, now starts a thorough search for any

:14:41. > :14:45.evidence that the suspects might have left. We suspect they have

:14:45. > :14:49.dropped some gloves. I'm going to record where they are so there is

:14:49. > :14:51.no ambiguity. You can look at a photograph and see where they have

:14:52. > :14:54.been found. The gloves are an important piece

:14:55. > :15:03.of evidence and have to be checked with the householder, Malvert May,

:15:03. > :15:13.if they belong to him or his family. They have left gloves at the side.

:15:13. > :15:16.

:15:16. > :15:26.They are not yours? I will double- I am pretty sure they are not ours.

:15:26. > :15:30.

:15:30. > :15:37.Anything that helps the case. It's time consuming, taking photos.

:15:37. > :15:43.What I'll do is seize the gloves. We have the potential of getting

:15:43. > :15:47.DNA. Cigarette butts. Anything like that really. House owner Malvert

:15:47. > :15:50.May is no stranger to break-ins. He has been a victim before. But that

:15:50. > :15:53.has not diminished his respect for the police.

:15:53. > :15:57.People moan about the police. They've caught the people every

:15:57. > :16:00.time. The suspects were taken back to

:16:00. > :16:07.Leigh on Sea police station, to be interviewed. Amazingly, they were

:16:07. > :16:10.only 13 and 14 years old. But, without the quick intervention of

:16:11. > :16:14.Steve and Lee, they might have never been caught at all.

:16:14. > :16:24.Members of the public are very key to policing, because they are our

:16:24. > :16:25.

:16:25. > :16:32.eyes and ears. It is not that common for it to happen. People are

:16:32. > :16:38.very nervous or quite concerned to get involved. But, when they do, we

:16:38. > :16:46.some excellent results. What's that saying: "An Englishman's home is

:16:46. > :16:51.his castle." Earlier, we were in Essex, for the case of a family car

:16:51. > :16:59.stolen, and illegally sold to a scrap dealer.

:16:59. > :17:06.They were referred to hundred and 50, it is a 5,000 car. Obviously

:17:06. > :17:09.it is well below the price. The car belongs to Graham and Linda

:17:09. > :17:13.Beams, who came home from holiday to discover that it had been stolen.

:17:13. > :17:17.The car had been parked on the driveway. We came back to discover

:17:17. > :17:26.the car was no longer there. Officer Christian Forbes is on the

:17:26. > :17:30.trail of the man caught on CCTV selling the car to the scrap dealer.

:17:30. > :17:35.As soon as I get an identification, we will arrest him for burglary and

:17:35. > :17:38.take it from there. Nearly two months since the initial burglary,

:17:38. > :17:42.the police haven't caught the thieves who broke into the Beams'

:17:42. > :17:46.house and stole their car. In the past few days, there has

:17:46. > :17:50.been a breakthrough. They now know who the man is from the CCTV at the

:17:50. > :17:58.scrap yard. It's 8am, and PC Christian Forbes is briefing his

:17:58. > :18:04.team. A burglary happened. On the 5th December, 2011. The suspect

:18:04. > :18:13.took the car keys and the car. A week later, the vehicle is sold to

:18:13. > :18:19.a scrap dealer. 250. It is worth 5,000. We got CCTV from the scrap

:18:19. > :18:24.dealer and the vehicle was recovered. Receipts went to local

:18:24. > :18:32.police officers. From the newspaper adverts, somebody has phoned in

:18:32. > :18:35.saying they know that person. I can confirm it is hymns from CCTV.

:18:35. > :18:38.A member of the public has identified the suspect from the

:18:38. > :18:42.picture in the paper. The police plan to raid his house. Officer

:18:42. > :18:45.Forbes has a list of items which he is looking for, which may connect

:18:45. > :18:50.the suspect with the burglary at the Beams'.

:18:50. > :18:57.When we search the address, we are after a distinctive dark-coloured

:18:57. > :19:02.check jacket with a hood. A bean knee hat and grey trousers. The

:19:02. > :19:10.outstanding property from the burglary, which is a kindle, a baby

:19:10. > :19:20.seat, david green London jewellery box. Full stab vest to be worn. Any

:19:20. > :19:20.

:19:20. > :19:24.Questions? A knife was found at the scene of the crime, so the police

:19:24. > :19:26.don't know how violent the suspect may be. Stab vests are worn, as a

:19:26. > :19:30.precaution. The suspect has lived at several

:19:30. > :19:40.addresses in recent months, so the police have to visit each one,

:19:40. > :19:42.

:19:42. > :19:49.until they find him. There is obviously someone in there. Any

:19:49. > :19:59.movement? No one answers, so they ask next door if they recognise the

:19:59. > :20:01.

:20:01. > :20:10.man. Never seen him before? Never. Thanks for your time. No luck at

:20:10. > :20:18.this address. They move on to the next one.

:20:18. > :20:23.No? Another blank, but Officer Forbes is undeterred. It is like

:20:23. > :20:27.hunting, we will keep on trying until we get them. We have a third

:20:27. > :20:33.address to try, you never know, somebody might say he is that in

:20:33. > :20:37.other address. Berkeley it is not too far away. It seems he likes to

:20:37. > :20:42.live in the local area, within less than a mile. Hopefully we will find

:20:42. > :20:52.him at this address. The This is the final address which the police

:20:52. > :21:05.

:21:05. > :21:10.have for the suspect. Could you The suspect opens the door.

:21:10. > :21:20.Burglary happened on 5th December, 1920 11, you were identified from

:21:20. > :21:23.CCTV, I am arresting you on suspicion of burglary. The suspect

:21:23. > :21:33.isn't offering any form of resistance and allows the police in,

:21:33. > :21:41.to search the property. So what's this all about? Suspicion of a

:21:41. > :21:49.burglary. We have to find out the details. That takes place by way of

:21:49. > :21:52.an interview. I have nothing to hide. The police discover the

:21:52. > :22:01.clothing which the suspect was wearing in the CCTV pictures. So

:22:01. > :22:09.they know that this is definitely their man. We have the jacket. We

:22:09. > :22:16.have issues and trousers as well. I am happy to say we have got the

:22:16. > :22:21.staff. I'll arrest him on suspicion of burglary. Even though he was the

:22:21. > :22:28.one who sold the car, I am happy with the close he wore, but we do

:22:28. > :22:34.not know if he went into the house. We will interview him over the

:22:34. > :22:37.selling of the vehicle. A It's 10am, and the suspect is taken to the

:22:37. > :22:43.station for interview. Whether this man is a potentially violent

:22:43. > :22:48.burglar is yet to be proven. This was publicised in the paper.

:22:48. > :22:55.If he saw the newspaper, any clued up criminal would have dumped the

:22:55. > :22:59.clothing. That is how we link them. This man isn't one of our well

:22:59. > :23:04.known people. I think he was under the impression he would never be

:23:04. > :23:09.caught. Luckily the information received led us to him and we

:23:09. > :23:19.recovered all the clothing he was wearing. Also confiscated was the

:23:19. > :23:27.suspect's mobile phone. We have seized his mobile phone, we can

:23:27. > :23:30.look at the knowledge, he might have sent texts to the other person.

:23:30. > :23:33.At the station, the suspect is booked in, and his fingerprints

:23:33. > :23:35.taken. While the officers catalogue the

:23:35. > :23:45.evidence, the suspect is interviewed, and gives Officer

:23:45. > :23:47.

:23:47. > :23:53.Forbes an explanation. He has given the story, he was

:23:53. > :23:58.given the car, with the keys and a log book, by one of his friends.

:23:58. > :24:04.His friend told him the bottom end of the engine had gone, and the car

:24:04. > :24:12.was no good. He was instructed to take it to scrap dealer, get 250,

:24:12. > :24:15.and he would be paid 10. He admitted the CCTV footage is of him.

:24:15. > :24:20.The police have the suspect's mobile phone. And a number they

:24:20. > :24:28.think is the man who was at the scrap yard with him. We've got his
