0:01:35 > 0:01:36- Thank you so much.- That's all right.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39Thank you ever so, ever so much for that.

0:01:49 > 0:01:53On today's programme: the incredible story of how one thief

0:01:53 > 0:01:58went to extraordinary lengths to cover his tracks.

0:01:58 > 0:02:00This is certainly one of the most unusual cases

0:02:00 > 0:02:05where we've managed to recover stolen property and return it.

0:02:05 > 0:02:08A group of young treasure-hunters give police a puzzle to solve

0:02:08 > 0:02:11when they uncover a mysterious haul.

0:02:11 > 0:02:15I said to my dad, "William has found some gold and silver."

0:02:15 > 0:02:18And he said, "Oh, my Lord!"

0:02:18 > 0:02:21And then I was like, "Yeah, I know."

0:02:22 > 0:02:25And the police race to stop an unusual robbery in progress.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28Stay! Put your hands up!

0:02:28 > 0:02:30What have you got on you?

0:02:33 > 0:02:36Opportunist thieves usually want to get away

0:02:36 > 0:02:39from the scene of their crime as quickly as possible.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46In September 2010, on the M62 near Hull,

0:02:46 > 0:02:50Humberside Police are in hot pursuit of a suspect car.

0:02:50 > 0:02:54Inside the car is a man police think is responsible for burglaries in the local area.

0:02:58 > 0:03:02The police chase the car until suddenly pulls over on the hard shoulder.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06The suspect jumps out and heads for a nearby field.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12The police pursue him, when he suddenly stops,

0:03:13 > 0:03:15gives up and is arrested.

0:03:17 > 0:03:22That same day, 80-year-old widow, Leonie Thornhill

0:03:22 > 0:03:25was cleaning her car at the front of her house.

0:03:25 > 0:03:31When she came in and walked into her bedroom, she made a shocking discovery.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34My two boxes in which I keep my jewellery were on the bed

0:03:34 > 0:03:36with all the contents spread out.

0:03:36 > 0:03:39And I realised we'd had a burglary.

0:03:41 > 0:03:46I then looked at my ring stand to see if my rings were there.

0:03:46 > 0:03:48And they were gone.

0:03:50 > 0:03:53I thought, "Oh my gosh. What do I do now?"

0:03:53 > 0:03:58The items that had been taken from Leonie were irreplaceable.

0:03:58 > 0:04:02When it was taken, I was upset, because my husband bought me one

0:04:02 > 0:04:06many years ago and that was the ring I was most proud of, yes.

0:04:06 > 0:04:09When the police went house to house for witnesses,

0:04:09 > 0:04:13a neighbour reported seeing a young man acting suspiciously.

0:04:13 > 0:04:16Crucially, they had noted down the registration number of his car.

0:04:18 > 0:04:22This registration was then matched to the car of the man

0:04:22 > 0:04:24police had chased on the M62.

0:04:24 > 0:04:28However, no stolen goods had been found on the suspect or in his car.

0:04:29 > 0:04:33Detective Sergeant Gavin Osborne was responsible for finding out

0:04:33 > 0:04:37what the suspected burglar had done with Leonie's stolen items.

0:04:37 > 0:04:41We quickly established from the victim exactly what had been

0:04:41 > 0:04:43taken from within her property.

0:04:43 > 0:04:47That gave us an indication as to what we are looking for

0:04:47 > 0:04:50and where he may have possibly disposed of it

0:04:50 > 0:04:52as he's been making his way along this field.

0:04:52 > 0:04:56But after an extensive search of the area, nothing.

0:04:56 > 0:04:59For DS Osborne, that left only one other option.

0:04:59 > 0:05:03It was only some hours later it became apparent he'd actually swallowed the jewellery.

0:05:03 > 0:05:05The suspect was arrested

0:05:05 > 0:05:09and taken to hospital for X-rays to see what he had swallowed.

0:05:09 > 0:05:13He went for the X-ray, and on that X-ray we could quite clearly see

0:05:13 > 0:05:17that he had two pieces of what appeared to be rings inside his body.

0:05:17 > 0:05:21The dilemma we then had was how we were going to get them back.

0:05:22 > 0:05:26It could take anything up to a week for those to pass naturally

0:05:26 > 0:05:29through his body, and again, we spoke to him

0:05:29 > 0:05:34and emphasised the sentimental value of what we believed was inside him.

0:05:34 > 0:05:39And he took that on board and after about a week of being in prison,

0:05:39 > 0:05:43I got a phone call to say there was a package there for me to collect.

0:05:43 > 0:05:45And then before we could return them,

0:05:45 > 0:05:49because of the obvious health risks, we took them to a local company

0:05:49 > 0:05:53who agreed to professionally clean them free of charge.

0:05:55 > 0:05:58Shall I put a bit in your basket?

0:05:58 > 0:06:01The rings were delivered back to their rightful owner.

0:06:01 > 0:06:03I got my rings back, and they came back sparkling.

0:06:03 > 0:06:06Beautiful, they were.

0:06:06 > 0:06:09She was amazed that we had managed to recover the property

0:06:09 > 0:06:12and when she became aware of the process that the rings

0:06:12 > 0:06:16had been through, she was even more amazed at the lengths we'd gone to.

0:06:16 > 0:06:20Now I don't know how they found them, I don't know who found them,

0:06:20 > 0:06:23that's up to them, but bless him, I wouldn't want his job.

0:06:23 > 0:06:27My rings came back looking better than they did when they went.

0:06:27 > 0:06:32And all my friends say, how can you even think of wearing those when you know where they've been?

0:06:32 > 0:06:35And I say I don't care where they've been, I'm still wearing them.

0:06:35 > 0:06:39One of Leonie's rings was not found,

0:06:39 > 0:06:43but she was pleased to get the other two, and life went back to normal.

0:06:43 > 0:06:46Little did she know that this was not quite the end of the matter.

0:06:46 > 0:06:50Out of the blue, the police received a call about the burglar.

0:06:50 > 0:06:53He'd been taken into hospital having collapsed.

0:06:53 > 0:06:57It turned out that they'd taken him into hospital and when they opened up

0:06:57 > 0:07:02his chest cavity, they found a third ring inside his left lung.

0:07:02 > 0:07:06This single ring came and yes, it was mine,

0:07:06 > 0:07:11and he had apparently swallowed this ring with the other two

0:07:11 > 0:07:15but this one, unfortunately for him, went down into his lung.

0:07:15 > 0:07:17Bless him. He deserved everything he got.

0:07:17 > 0:07:20I've been in the police service for 29 years.

0:07:20 > 0:07:23This is certainly one of the most unusual cases

0:07:23 > 0:07:27where we've managed to recover stolen property and return it.

0:07:27 > 0:07:29I'm very pleased with the police because they couldn't

0:07:29 > 0:07:32have been quicker, they couldn't have been more pleasant,

0:07:32 > 0:07:35and they've been so good and kind. That's all I can really say about them.

0:07:39 > 0:07:44The strange behaviour of burglars is something the police have to constantly second guess.

0:07:44 > 0:07:48Why, for instance, would a burglar hide his haul

0:07:48 > 0:07:52of expensive silver outside a suburban garage?

0:07:52 > 0:07:56That's just what happened in January 2012 in Guildford, Surrey.

0:07:56 > 0:07:59The hoard of silver was discovered by three local children,

0:07:59 > 0:08:02Max, William and Shona.

0:08:02 > 0:08:07I said to my dad that William's found some gold and silver

0:08:07 > 0:08:09and he said he didn't believe it.

0:08:09 > 0:08:15So we went down and he said, "Oh, my Lord, it's real."

0:08:15 > 0:08:17I was like, "Yeah, I know."

0:08:17 > 0:08:21There were over 30 pieces of silver and gold.

0:08:21 > 0:08:26I think it's worth billions and billions of pounds. Quite a lot.

0:08:26 > 0:08:29All of it, all together. It would be billions of pounds.

0:08:29 > 0:08:32It might not be worth billions of pounds,

0:08:32 > 0:08:35but at Guildford Police Station, DC James West

0:08:35 > 0:08:38and DC Barry Jutsam are given the task of finding out

0:08:38 > 0:08:41who this treasure belonged to in the first place

0:08:41 > 0:08:43so they can give it back.

0:08:43 > 0:08:46What we will probably do is take the property out

0:08:46 > 0:08:50and have a look at it and maybe just do a few more inquiries on it.

0:08:50 > 0:08:56With no obvious reason why the items were dumped, this is a real mystery.

0:08:56 > 0:09:00- Thanks very much.- No problem. - It's only one exhibit, isn't it?

0:09:00 > 0:09:05Yes, it's all in one. Is it going back to the owner now?

0:09:05 > 0:09:09No, we're looking into it. We are not sure who the owner is at the moment. Thanks very much!

0:09:11 > 0:09:14Max, William and Shona's find doesn't match anything listed

0:09:14 > 0:09:17on the police stolen goods database.

0:09:17 > 0:09:22And as the loot was exposed to the weather, there was a lack of forensic evidence.

0:09:22 > 0:09:26West and Jutsam must examine the recovered items for clues

0:09:26 > 0:09:30as to who they might have belonged to and where they came from.

0:09:30 > 0:09:33So this one here is inscribed on the bottom,

0:09:33 > 0:09:36"Good wishes from us all. Happy 21st! 1968."

0:09:38 > 0:09:42So some significance to someone.

0:09:42 > 0:09:46- DC West spots something else.- "DBL."

0:09:46 > 0:09:47DBL?

0:09:47 > 0:09:50It's another possible lead, but they will need to get more

0:09:50 > 0:09:54than just initials to track down the owner of the property.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57One of the last items out provides an even more intriguing clue.

0:09:57 > 0:10:02- This one here.- What's that?- This is a plate from Ackworth School.

0:10:02 > 0:10:05That's just got the inscription of the school name on there.

0:10:05 > 0:10:08The initials on the tankard and school crest on the plate

0:10:08 > 0:10:10give the team a strong lead.

0:10:12 > 0:10:16Ackworth School would appear to be in West Yorkshire.

0:10:18 > 0:10:20West Yorkshire.

0:10:20 > 0:10:25I'll phone the school and see if they have heard about this.

0:10:25 > 0:10:28Hello, my name's James West, I'm a police officer with Surrey police.

0:10:28 > 0:10:31We've found some property

0:10:31 > 0:10:33and we're trying to work out where it's come from.

0:10:33 > 0:10:38If the school can match the initials and birthdate on the tankard with a former pupil

0:10:38 > 0:10:42or member of staff, their records could be key to solving this case.

0:10:43 > 0:10:48All right then, thanks very much for your time. Thanks. Goodbye.

0:10:49 > 0:10:51They're going to call us back.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56Then another discovery connected to the mystery.

0:10:56 > 0:10:59DC Jutsam gets a message to call Mark Cremmin, Max's father,

0:10:59 > 0:11:03who originally reported the recovered silverware to the police.

0:11:04 > 0:11:07Morning, Mark. Barry Jutsam, CID Guildford.

0:11:07 > 0:11:12Mark has found another bit of treasure and thinks it might be part of the same haul.

0:11:12 > 0:11:17Would it be convenient if somebody pops up later to recover that item?

0:11:17 > 0:11:21It will be this morning and somebody from the team will pop and see you.

0:11:21 > 0:11:22Thank you, bye.

0:11:23 > 0:11:28He found a box which he describes as where the knives and forks were,

0:11:28 > 0:11:32so it could be just a cutlery box or something like that,

0:11:32 > 0:11:36but he's there this morning and wants someone to pop up and see.

0:11:36 > 0:11:41It is fascinating to try and work out where this property has come from.

0:11:41 > 0:11:45The police are hoping that the new items found by Mark

0:11:45 > 0:11:49will provide the final clue and lead them to the owner of the entire haul.

0:11:51 > 0:11:55- Hi, is it Mark?- Yes.- DC West. I spoke you to on the phone.

0:11:55 > 0:11:58- Nice to meet you. - Nice to meet you too.

0:11:58 > 0:12:01I've just come round about you finding some more property.

0:12:01 > 0:12:03The one you found last night.

0:12:03 > 0:12:06Is it quite close to where you actually found it, those garages over the back?

0:12:06 > 0:12:08That way.

0:12:08 > 0:12:12- OK, you all right to come up and show us?- Yes.- That's OK.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15- I'll take that off you.- OK.

0:12:15 > 0:12:17It's a few days since Max, William and Shona

0:12:17 > 0:12:19made their initial discovery.

0:12:19 > 0:12:22As they're at school, DC West needs Mark to show him

0:12:22 > 0:12:24where the first haul of items was found.

0:12:24 > 0:12:29This is where I came round the corner here,

0:12:29 > 0:12:33and I saw - basically there was a bag with a load of stuff in.

0:12:33 > 0:12:38- What was the bag?- It was like a blue bag, like polythene.

0:12:38 > 0:12:41- A polythene bag, not a holdall?- No.

0:12:43 > 0:12:47It'll be difficult to get evidence from the new item Mark recovered.

0:12:47 > 0:12:48The box is actually sealed.

0:12:48 > 0:12:53There is a key at the front that would fit in there.

0:12:53 > 0:12:55Maybe we could get in and see if there's anything

0:12:55 > 0:12:58that may identify the owners of the property.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01The best thing would be something with a name and address.

0:13:01 > 0:13:05It's unlikely, these things don't usually happen, but it is quite

0:13:05 > 0:13:09intriguing and exciting to find out where it's come from.

0:13:10 > 0:13:12Back at the station,

0:13:12 > 0:13:15DC Jutsam has found some keys amongst the silver haul.

0:13:16 > 0:13:17We've got two keys.

0:13:23 > 0:13:26That one doesn't fit, I don't think.

0:13:26 > 0:13:30Cinderella is not going to the ball at the moment.

0:13:32 > 0:13:35No. Both keys don't fit.

0:13:36 > 0:13:40Coming up, the team get a potential breakthrough in the case.

0:13:40 > 0:13:45We've been able to trace those initials to a pupil in school

0:13:45 > 0:13:48at that time and the age would seem to be a very close match.

0:13:48 > 0:13:50That's excellent. That's fantastic.

0:13:55 > 0:14:00It's 7:20pm in Northampton, officers Watters and Greenham are responding to a robbery in progress.

0:14:00 > 0:14:05We had reports of a phone box down here on this road,

0:14:05 > 0:14:10someone has tampered with it and possibly taken the money, or stolen the money from it.

0:14:10 > 0:14:13When they arrive, there's no one to be found.

0:14:15 > 0:14:19But they do find evidence that someone has tried to get the money.

0:14:19 > 0:14:24We have a small drill hole just there where someone has tried to get the coins out from there.

0:14:24 > 0:14:27And there's fresh particles on the floor there.

0:14:27 > 0:14:29Someone's only just done it.

0:14:29 > 0:14:32We need to locate someone who has a sort of drill piece on him.

0:14:33 > 0:14:37No money is missing, but attempted phone box robbery is serious.

0:14:37 > 0:14:40Over £7 million a year is lost

0:14:40 > 0:14:43due to theft and vandalism of phone boxes.

0:14:43 > 0:14:47PC Greenham notices the local shop has CCTV.

0:14:47 > 0:14:51- Someone's had a go at drilling the phone box.- When, now?

0:14:51 > 0:14:52A short while ago, yeah.

0:14:52 > 0:14:55The owner may not have noticed anything

0:14:55 > 0:14:58but the shop surveillance system may have recorded the attempted theft.

0:14:58 > 0:15:02The shop does have CCTV, so hopefully that will pick it up

0:15:02 > 0:15:05and give us a description of anyone messing around in there.

0:15:05 > 0:15:08The officers scroll through the footage.

0:15:08 > 0:15:10Can you take that back a touch, because I saw two guys,

0:15:10 > 0:15:12and the one guy went to the floor.

0:15:12 > 0:15:16- Two figures catch their eye. - You see the two at the back?

0:15:16 > 0:15:20At 7:09pm you can see two lads going to the phone box

0:15:20 > 0:15:23and one of them keeps bending down to the floor

0:15:23 > 0:15:27and getting back up again and looks to be passing him.

0:15:27 > 0:15:30The suspected thieves have been caught on camera interfering with the phone box.

0:15:30 > 0:15:35For the police, it's an interesting turn of events, but the men have vanished.

0:15:38 > 0:15:39Then a call comes in.

0:15:39 > 0:15:43'We've got two people at the phone box now and it looks like they've got a drill.'

0:15:43 > 0:15:46Council CCTV is witnessing another phone box being attacked.

0:15:46 > 0:15:51The robbery is happening 15 minutes away on the other side of town.

0:15:51 > 0:15:56Again, there's two males at a phone box trying to get the money out.

0:15:56 > 0:15:59Will they get there in time?

0:15:59 > 0:16:02An update comes through from the Council CCTV room.

0:16:02 > 0:16:05The CCTV still has two lads on camera,

0:16:05 > 0:16:07one of them potentially with a drill.

0:16:09 > 0:16:12They're a few minutes away from the phone box location.

0:16:18 > 0:16:21It's a race to catch the vandals red-handed.

0:16:21 > 0:16:25..In that case I'll wait at the top end.

0:16:25 > 0:16:29RADIO COMMENTARY CONTINUES

0:16:29 > 0:16:33They make it. And one of the men is still there.

0:16:33 > 0:16:36Stay there, mate. Stay! Have you got anything on you now?

0:16:36 > 0:16:39Put your hands up. What have you got on you?

0:16:39 > 0:16:41What have you got on you?

0:16:43 > 0:16:46The second man has run off. This man didn't have that chance.

0:16:46 > 0:16:52All right, chap, put your hands just behind your back for a minute for us.

0:16:52 > 0:16:53Good lad.

0:16:53 > 0:16:56Just take a seat in the back here.

0:16:56 > 0:16:59With the suspect detained, Sergeant Watters checks

0:16:59 > 0:17:02with the CCTV operator to make sure they have the right man.

0:17:02 > 0:17:04Yeah, just confirm, this one we've got here,

0:17:04 > 0:17:06was he at the scene doing anything?

0:17:06 > 0:17:11'The one male you have got had a drill put into the cash box.'

0:17:11 > 0:17:14The physical evidence backs up the CCTV.

0:17:14 > 0:17:18Again, another fresh drill mark there with particles on the floor,

0:17:18 > 0:17:20so it's obviously recently been done.

0:17:20 > 0:17:24Both phone boxes have been damaged in exactly the same way...

0:17:24 > 0:17:28by drilling into the money box.

0:17:28 > 0:17:31No money was taken, but it's enough to arrest the man and take him into custody.

0:17:33 > 0:17:36The officers are still missing the other man...and a drill.

0:17:36 > 0:17:39The other male we're looking for has disappeared into the estate,

0:17:39 > 0:17:43so he could potentially have taken it with him.

0:17:43 > 0:17:47We'll try and see if they've chucked the drill away or hid it somewhere.

0:17:48 > 0:17:52An update comes in from a second police team searching nearby.

0:17:52 > 0:17:57Another colleague has found the other suspect, so hopefully we'll get some sort of result there.

0:17:57 > 0:18:00A police van has arrived to take the man in for questioning.

0:18:00 > 0:18:05At this time, you're under arrest for attempted theft from a machine.

0:18:05 > 0:18:09Everything will be explained when you get to custody. Yeah, there you go.

0:18:09 > 0:18:13All right? Up we go, watch your head.

0:18:13 > 0:18:14Yeah, good lad.

0:18:16 > 0:18:20At the station, the other man has already been taken into custody.

0:18:20 > 0:18:23This man continues to deny everything.

0:18:23 > 0:18:27- I've been charged.- You haven't been charged, you've been arrested.

0:18:27 > 0:18:30- On suspicion.- Suspicion of what? - I've told you already.

0:18:30 > 0:18:33At this stage he is unaware he has been caught on CCTV.

0:18:36 > 0:18:40Is there any evidence of me holding any tools?

0:18:40 > 0:18:44Or in possession of any tools? No, no, no. I'm asking you.

0:18:44 > 0:18:48That's what I'm saying to you. Everything will be explained to you in the interview, won't it?

0:18:48 > 0:18:52Listen! Do you really think I'd rob a phone box? Are you mad?

0:18:52 > 0:18:54- I'm not mad, no.- No, neither am I!

0:18:56 > 0:18:58If you're being aggressive...

0:18:58 > 0:19:00I ain't being aggressive! Am I being aggressive?

0:19:00 > 0:19:02We're going to take you to a cell.

0:19:02 > 0:19:05Cell 10. Cell 10!

0:19:05 > 0:19:07Right, this way.

0:19:07 > 0:19:11The police will not accept any threatening behaviour from suspects.

0:19:12 > 0:19:16- BLEEP- doing?- Come on.

0:19:16 > 0:19:19The man is safely restrained in a holding cell.

0:19:19 > 0:19:22- Is there anything else on you?- No.

0:19:22 > 0:19:24No jewellery or anything like that?

0:19:24 > 0:19:26Suddenly, he collapses.

0:19:29 > 0:19:31The police act fast.

0:19:33 > 0:19:35They need to check if he is unconscious

0:19:35 > 0:19:37and shine a light into his eyes.

0:19:37 > 0:19:41- Yeah, that's unusual. - We know you're awake.

0:19:41 > 0:19:43You're just being silly now.

0:19:43 > 0:19:45Come on, come on, fella!

0:19:46 > 0:19:50We've checked his pulse, he's got a pulse, he's got eye movements,

0:19:50 > 0:19:53he's blinking, and you can feel his breathing.

0:19:53 > 0:19:56But just to be on the safe side we've called an ambulance.

0:19:56 > 0:19:57The paramedics arrive.

0:19:57 > 0:20:02You're not unconscious, because unconscious people don't respond when you tickle their eyelashes.

0:20:02 > 0:20:04Come on!

0:20:04 > 0:20:05Come on, mate.

0:20:05 > 0:20:08You need to talk to us, come on.

0:20:09 > 0:20:14A check of his vital signs shows nothing out of the ordinary.

0:20:14 > 0:20:17Come on, talk to us. Come on!

0:20:17 > 0:20:19The officers can't take any chances.

0:20:19 > 0:20:24We'll take him down the hospital, where he can be checked over.

0:20:24 > 0:20:28- That's the way.- He's actually quite lighter than I thought he'd be.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31The man is taken to A&E, escorted by police officer.

0:20:31 > 0:20:37When he's back and given the all-clear, we'll take him back here and he'll be interviewed.

0:20:37 > 0:20:42Whether his condition is genuine or not will make no difference to the arrest procedure.

0:20:42 > 0:20:47We can keep somebody for a maximum of 24 hours without applying to a magistrate.

0:20:47 > 0:20:52If somebody is taken to hospital, that clock is suspended

0:20:52 > 0:20:57and restarts when they come back, so it makes no difference.

0:20:57 > 0:21:00They're here in police custody for longer, but some people think

0:21:00 > 0:21:05it's a quick, easy way out and it will eat up some time if they go down the hospital.

0:21:09 > 0:21:12Earlier, on Robbed Raided Reunited,

0:21:12 > 0:21:16we saw DCs James West and Barry Jutsam trying to trace the

0:21:16 > 0:21:21owner of a large haul of silverware discovered by three local children.

0:21:21 > 0:21:25With no police record of the stolen items, they searched the property

0:21:25 > 0:21:29for clues, finding a tankard with a birth date and initials.

0:21:29 > 0:21:31DBL.

0:21:31 > 0:21:34As well as a silver platter with a school crest.

0:21:36 > 0:21:39Within just a few days, DC West gets back in touch with the school

0:21:39 > 0:21:43to see if they've been able to discover the mysterious DBL.

0:21:44 > 0:21:48- Hello there, it's James West calling from Surrey Police.- Hello, James.

0:21:48 > 0:21:49I've got a message to give you a call

0:21:49 > 0:21:52just in relation to that property that was found.

0:21:52 > 0:21:55'Yes, we've looked through the archives and we have had some of

0:21:55 > 0:22:00- 'our scholars do a tour around their extensive network.'- OK, fantastic.

0:22:00 > 0:22:05'One of the tankards you've recovered had got some initials on

0:22:05 > 0:22:10'and we've been able to trace those initials to a pupil in school at that time.'

0:22:10 > 0:22:12Yeah, DBL.

0:22:12 > 0:22:15- The tankard with the 21st birthday inscribed?- 'That's right.

0:22:15 > 0:22:18'I believe you'll find that will be Desmond Brook Lawrence.'

0:22:18 > 0:22:20That's excellent, thanks very much.

0:22:20 > 0:22:22We'll get back in contact to let you know how we get on.

0:22:22 > 0:22:24- 'Thank you very much.'- Thanks a lot.

0:22:24 > 0:22:28Desmond Brook Lawrence is an old pupil of Ackworth School.

0:22:28 > 0:22:32A quick search of the voters' database brings up his address.

0:22:32 > 0:22:33There he is.

0:22:33 > 0:22:38DC West runs the address through the police computer.

0:22:38 > 0:22:40Here we go.

0:22:40 > 0:22:42We've got a burglary at the home address

0:22:42 > 0:22:47between 25th December last year and 3rd January.

0:22:47 > 0:22:49Let's have a look at the property screens.

0:22:49 > 0:22:54A silver trophy is missing. I would imagine that property has come from this burglary.

0:22:54 > 0:22:59The system reveals the victim was out of the country when the crime took place,

0:22:59 > 0:23:01meaning an accurate list of the stolen property

0:23:01 > 0:23:05has not yet been supplied to the police.

0:23:05 > 0:23:10This explains why the items didn't show up on DC West's original search of the police computer.

0:23:10 > 0:23:12It's a fantastic breakthrough.

0:23:12 > 0:23:14We haven't got a telephone number.

0:23:14 > 0:23:17We'll do some research on that and go round and see him.

0:23:17 > 0:23:19We're dancing!

0:23:21 > 0:23:23DC West loads up the stolen silverware

0:23:23 > 0:23:27and sets off to reunite them with their rightful owner.

0:23:27 > 0:23:32The mystery may be about to be solved.

0:23:32 > 0:23:36- Hi, Mr Lawrence.- Good evening. - Detective West.

0:23:36 > 0:23:42DC West finally comes face-to-face with the elusive DBL.

0:23:42 > 0:23:46The home of Desmond Brook Lawrence was burgled six weeks ago.

0:23:46 > 0:23:53We got quite a lot of silver here, it's like the Antiques Roadshow!

0:23:54 > 0:23:58Since their discovery by Max, William and Shona, behind a garage,

0:23:58 > 0:24:03the items alone provided the only clues to the identity of their rightful owner.

0:24:03 > 0:24:07Desmond recognises them immediately.

0:24:07 > 0:24:08Here's the tankards.

0:24:08 > 0:24:11That was a 21st birthday present.

0:24:11 > 0:24:13Do you remember who bought you it?

0:24:13 > 0:24:15I think it was my mother or father.

0:24:15 > 0:24:20Fantastic. Where did you get all these items from?

0:24:20 > 0:24:22My parents.

0:24:22 > 0:24:26My parents died about 10 years ago

0:24:26 > 0:24:29and they had been collecting all this all their married life.

0:24:29 > 0:24:32How long were they together for?

0:24:32 > 0:24:35- About 60 years.- 60 years!

0:24:35 > 0:24:40They collected these and then left them to you as an inheritance?

0:24:40 > 0:24:41- Yeah.- Fantastic.

0:24:41 > 0:24:47Among the items is another tankard with a different set of initials.

0:24:48 > 0:24:50This is my father's initials.

0:24:50 > 0:24:55- I think it was a wedding present from my mother to him.- Oh blimey!

0:24:55 > 0:24:59Being able to reunite Desmond with his family heirlooms

0:24:59 > 0:25:02is the best part of the job for DC West.

0:25:02 > 0:25:06Those items that Desmond was telling us about there, were very personal to him.

0:25:06 > 0:25:10There was a tankard for his dad, and for him for his 21st birthday

0:25:10 > 0:25:14and there's a plate that's come from the school on the 200th anniversary.

0:25:14 > 0:25:16That means nothing to the people who've taken it,

0:25:16 > 0:25:19other than some money when they sell it.

0:25:19 > 0:25:23So to get those items back to Desmond is really fantastic.

0:25:24 > 0:25:27Desmond also had the key to the mysterious box

0:25:27 > 0:25:30but it turned out to be empty after all.

0:25:30 > 0:25:33Thanks to Surrey Police and Max, William and Shona,

0:25:33 > 0:25:37these irreplaceable family items are back where they belong.

0:25:42 > 0:25:44The man arrested by police at the phone box

0:25:44 > 0:25:48and later taken to A&E was examined as a precaution,

0:25:48 > 0:25:50then returned to the police station for interview.

0:25:50 > 0:25:55The drill wasn't found and no money was stolen from either phone box.

0:25:55 > 0:25:59So no further action was taken against him or the other man arrested.

0:26:02 > 0:26:06In the case of the stolen jewellery, the suspect pleaded guilty

0:26:06 > 0:26:09and was sentenced to 30 months in prison.

0:26:09 > 0:26:12After having a ring surgically removed from his lung,

0:26:12 > 0:26:15he now has health problems that will affect him for the rest of his life.

0:26:15 > 0:26:19I feel sorry for him, really, because he went through all that pain

0:26:19 > 0:26:21and I've got them back.

0:26:21 > 0:26:24So he's really suffered for nothing, hasn't he?

0:26:24 > 0:26:28The case is still open on Desmond's haul of stolen silverware

0:26:28 > 0:26:32and it's still a mystery as to why these precious items were dumped.

0:26:32 > 0:26:38But returning them to Desmond was a satisfying result for the police and the young treasure-hunters.

0:26:38 > 0:26:40Really pleased they've got their stuff back.

0:26:40 > 0:26:46I think the owners might be crying in happy tears.

0:26:46 > 0:26:49From the children who first called it in,

0:26:49 > 0:26:52through to the Ackworth School,

0:26:52 > 0:26:55I suppose it's like a jigsaw that we're trying to piece together

0:26:55 > 0:26:57to put the property back into his cabinet.
