0:01:27 > 0:01:30a minority of hardened criminals
0:01:30 > 0:01:35and a dedicated police task force codenamed Quartz.
0:01:36 > 0:01:39Quartz was set up five years ago now.
0:01:39 > 0:01:41We do a lot of work around drugs
0:01:41 > 0:01:43and drug supply and
0:01:43 > 0:01:45dealing with people who
0:01:45 > 0:01:48enforce drugs markets through the use,
0:01:48 > 0:01:51or the criminal use, of firearms.
0:01:52 > 0:01:55The team target Leeds' most wanted criminals,
0:01:55 > 0:01:59and their reputation for getting results precedes them.
0:01:59 > 0:02:02The plan is to go down there, sense it out,
0:02:02 > 0:02:05arrest the occupant and search the premises.
0:02:06 > 0:02:09This morning, they've received live intelligence
0:02:09 > 0:02:12that a suspected drug dealer is currently supplying
0:02:12 > 0:02:14in the Harehills district of the city.
0:02:16 > 0:02:18SIRENS WAIL
0:02:21 > 0:02:24Obviously, we don't know what we're going to come up against
0:02:24 > 0:02:27but, you know, if we need to get off and running,
0:02:27 > 0:02:28then we'll see how we get on.
0:02:30 > 0:02:35The team's target is 20-year-old Nathan Murphy.
0:02:35 > 0:02:38The officers intend to pay him a visit without warning.
0:02:40 > 0:02:44Element of surprise is usually what we go for and, er...
0:02:44 > 0:02:47When you get it right, it means that
0:02:47 > 0:02:50someone's not got the opportunity to get away.
0:02:51 > 0:02:55There are various levels of drugs dealers in the chain.
0:02:55 > 0:02:57We'd look at this as being a mid-level dealer,
0:02:57 > 0:02:59and we believe that this person
0:02:59 > 0:03:02would be in possession of quite a large amount of drugs.
0:03:02 > 0:03:04Typically, it would be, Class A controlled drugs
0:03:04 > 0:03:07which would be crack cocaine and heroin.
0:03:12 > 0:03:16On arrival at their stakeout point, the team hear from colleagues
0:03:16 > 0:03:19who already have the suspect under surveillance.
0:03:19 > 0:03:21He's on the move.
0:03:21 > 0:03:23We're just going to have to try and be a bit more fluid with it
0:03:23 > 0:03:26and see if we can take him out in the street.
0:03:26 > 0:03:28Are you happy that that lad is dealing?
0:03:28 > 0:03:31- Are you happy that he's in possession of drugs?- 'Yeah, yeah.'
0:03:31 > 0:03:34Stuart were saying that it were Bexley Road when he dealt it before.
0:03:35 > 0:03:39To catch their suspect, timing will be critical.
0:03:40 > 0:03:43Officers must try to predict the route he'll take.
0:03:43 > 0:03:44He's coming out of there.
0:03:44 > 0:03:47They said he's turning left and going up to the junction,
0:03:47 > 0:03:48so he's dealing on Bexley Road.
0:03:48 > 0:03:51If he goes right out of there, he's going to come on to here,
0:03:51 > 0:03:54walk along the gable end of the house and go up the next one.
0:03:54 > 0:03:57We need to get him as he's gone up. If we park short...
0:03:57 > 0:03:59- If we park short then... - And get out.
0:03:59 > 0:04:01- So Grove is this way, yeah?- Yeah.
0:04:01 > 0:04:04And Place is the one after.
0:04:05 > 0:04:09With this particular operation, the plan was to try
0:04:09 > 0:04:13and identify the dealer, which we did, which was Nathan Murphy.
0:04:13 > 0:04:16Erm...it was to detain him and to achieve or obtain
0:04:16 > 0:04:20the best possible evidence to show that he is...
0:04:20 > 0:04:23he's been drug dealing and...
0:04:23 > 0:04:26Because, ultimately, we need to build a case that goes to court
0:04:26 > 0:04:29and is evidentially sound, and the best way to do that
0:04:29 > 0:04:34would be to find the subject in possession of drugs.
0:04:34 > 0:04:37- There's an old people's home there. - So he's walking up the hill.
0:04:37 > 0:04:40The issue here is we don't want to be premature and stop him
0:04:40 > 0:04:42and to have no drugs on him. That's the...
0:04:44 > 0:04:48The team have only one chance to take their suspect down.
0:04:48 > 0:04:52It's now a question of waiting for him to make his move.
0:05:02 > 0:05:07Greater Manchester - famed for music, football, fashion...
0:05:07 > 0:05:08and car crime.
0:05:10 > 0:05:13The county has a higher rate of vehicle thefts
0:05:13 > 0:05:15than anywhere else in England and Wales.
0:05:15 > 0:05:17It's going to be a short briefing
0:05:17 > 0:05:20- cos we need to get out to- BLEEP - address before he gets to work.
0:05:20 > 0:05:23Hunting down those wanted for this type of crime
0:05:23 > 0:05:26is the Nominal Enforcement Team.
0:05:26 > 0:05:29The Nominal Enforcement Team is set up to tackle
0:05:29 > 0:05:32the most prolific offenders on the division.
0:05:32 > 0:05:34These are the sort of people that we recognised
0:05:34 > 0:05:36were active in burglaries,
0:05:36 > 0:05:38robberies and other serious offences.
0:05:39 > 0:05:43This morning, they're targeting a group of young petrol heads
0:05:43 > 0:05:45who definitely aren't camera shy.
0:05:46 > 0:05:48Most of the evidence that we've managed to get
0:05:48 > 0:05:50so far is via mobile phone.
0:05:50 > 0:05:53There is a number of photos of various vehicles.
0:05:53 > 0:05:56What we need to be looking for as soon as we arrest the offenders
0:05:56 > 0:05:59is that we take those phones straight off them.
0:05:59 > 0:06:02In just nine months, this gang are thought to have stolen
0:06:02 > 0:06:0514 cars from outside their owners' homes.
0:06:07 > 0:06:09The police have been able to connect them to the thefts
0:06:09 > 0:06:13after seizing a mobile phone linked to another crime.
0:06:15 > 0:06:19Through that mobile phone, we've been able to evidence vehicles
0:06:19 > 0:06:22that have been taken from the actual addresses.
0:06:22 > 0:06:24There were pictures of the actual vehicles themselves
0:06:24 > 0:06:28and taking the photographs quite brazenly on their own mobile phones.
0:06:28 > 0:06:30What we're able to do is build that intelligence picture up
0:06:30 > 0:06:33in terms of who were in the vehicles
0:06:33 > 0:06:36and then associate those vehicles with the actual locations
0:06:36 > 0:06:38where they were taken from.
0:06:41 > 0:06:45It's 5.00am and the team are preparing to swoop
0:06:45 > 0:06:47on their first suspect -
0:06:47 > 0:06:50a teenager with previous convictions.
0:06:51 > 0:06:53He's well known to the police
0:06:53 > 0:06:55and he has been done for a long time.
0:06:55 > 0:06:59Our suspicion is he was actually one of the main organisers
0:06:59 > 0:07:02and one of the main people responsible for the thefts.
0:07:03 > 0:07:05KNOCKING AT DOOR
0:07:05 > 0:07:09The officers are calling at the suspect's girlfriend's house
0:07:09 > 0:07:11hoping to catch him before he wakes up.
0:07:11 > 0:07:12Police. Hello?
0:07:15 > 0:07:17- Morning. It's the police.- Morning.
0:07:17 > 0:07:19- Is- BLEEP- up there?
0:07:19 > 0:07:22- Is he? I just need a quick word with him.- A quick word with him.
0:07:22 > 0:07:23Anybody else in at the moment?
0:07:23 > 0:07:26Come on, mate. Get yourself up, pal. Keep yourself covered up, darling.
0:07:26 > 0:07:28- Come on, mate.- I'm up!
0:07:37 > 0:07:38Yes, mate. You will be in a minute.
0:07:41 > 0:07:44The suspect hasn't been in trouble with the police for a while.
0:07:44 > 0:07:49He's unhappy at making their acquaintance again.
0:07:49 > 0:07:51We'll explain everything to you.
0:07:51 > 0:07:52Yeah.
0:07:53 > 0:07:57Right. I'll explain to you the reasons why we're here. All right?
0:07:57 > 0:07:59We've explained to you it's historic, haven't we?
0:07:59 > 0:08:01He was very upset.
0:08:01 > 0:08:03He was actually arrested at his girlfriend's address,
0:08:03 > 0:08:07quite a respectable family, and that's where we attended.
0:08:07 > 0:08:09And I think he was very shocked,
0:08:09 > 0:08:12the fact that we'd attended his address after, in his words,
0:08:12 > 0:08:14he'd stopped offending.
0:08:16 > 0:08:19I think, to an extent, he always knew that his past might
0:08:19 > 0:08:22catch up with him at some point, which it obviously did.
0:08:28 > 0:08:31But absolutely no compassion for him cos of the amount of damage that
0:08:31 > 0:08:34he's actually done, through his crimes, to victims.
0:08:35 > 0:08:38The team search for anything relating to
0:08:38 > 0:08:41the current spate of car thefts
0:08:41 > 0:08:44and they immediately find incriminating evidence.
0:08:45 > 0:08:47Sarge, these have been seized from the wall of the bedroom.
0:08:51 > 0:08:54These are the same images that we recovered from the mobile phones
0:08:54 > 0:08:56that were seized earlier on.
0:08:56 > 0:08:59They show the person that's been arrested with some associates
0:08:59 > 0:09:01in vehicles that we believe to be stolen.
0:09:01 > 0:09:03It's really good evidence in relation to
0:09:03 > 0:09:06the offence that we're investigating because, erm...
0:09:06 > 0:09:08obviously, he's been brazen enough
0:09:08 > 0:09:10to display these on his bedroom wall,
0:09:10 > 0:09:14and we'll definitely use some of this as evidence against him.
0:09:14 > 0:09:16And it's a total disregard for the victims of the crimes.
0:09:16 > 0:09:18You saw him this morning -
0:09:18 > 0:09:20he was trembling, he was shaking, clearly upset.
0:09:20 > 0:09:22But you sort of go through the mind-set of the victim
0:09:22 > 0:09:26when the vehicle was taken, and you've got people, young families,
0:09:26 > 0:09:29and a lot of the time the vehicles were taken for pure pleasure,
0:09:29 > 0:09:31so it wasn't even for any financial gain.
0:09:31 > 0:09:33So it sort of puts it into perspective, really.
0:09:39 > 0:09:42CLOCK TICKING
0:09:46 > 0:09:47Back in Leeds...
0:09:47 > 0:09:49We just wait now.
0:09:49 > 0:09:51..the Quartz team are on a stakeout.
0:10:01 > 0:10:03He's dealing on Bexley Road.
0:10:03 > 0:10:07So...if they can scare him there...
0:10:07 > 0:10:11They've received a tip-off that 20-year-old Nathan Murphy
0:10:11 > 0:10:15is dealing drugs, and they're hoping to catch him in the act.
0:10:16 > 0:10:19After an hour of waiting, a possible sighting.
0:10:21 > 0:10:23- This is him. This is him. - Just get ready.
0:10:23 > 0:10:25- 'Are you going to go for it?' - Yeah, course we are.
0:10:26 > 0:10:27Just get out...
0:10:31 > 0:10:33- Police, mate.- Police!
0:10:33 > 0:10:35Down! Down!
0:10:35 > 0:10:38- Down! - Police officers, calm down.
0:10:40 > 0:10:42Have you got any drugs on you?
0:10:42 > 0:10:44You are detained for the purposes of a search
0:10:44 > 0:10:46under the Misuse of Drugs Act, do you understand?
0:10:46 > 0:10:48- You've been detained by the police, OK?- All right.
0:10:48 > 0:10:51Can we get on the radio, please, and inform them we've got him?
0:10:51 > 0:10:53You don't have to say anything, but it may harm your defence
0:10:53 > 0:10:55if you do not mention when questioned
0:10:55 > 0:10:56something you later rely upon in court.
0:10:56 > 0:10:59Anything you do say may be given in evidence.
0:10:59 > 0:11:02You've been arrested on suspicion of being in possession
0:11:02 > 0:11:04of controlled drugs with intent to supply.
0:11:04 > 0:11:05We were concerned,
0:11:05 > 0:11:06as he was walking towards us,
0:11:06 > 0:11:08if he sees us, he's going to be off.
0:11:08 > 0:11:10And because of the layouts
0:11:10 > 0:11:14of the houses, and you can be down an alleyway or one of the back roads
0:11:14 > 0:11:16and out of view within seconds.
0:11:16 > 0:11:19Any drugs he's got on him are going to be gone, thrown in a bush,
0:11:19 > 0:11:22thrown down the drain, and he's laughing then.
0:11:22 > 0:11:25So we wanted to grab him or detain him
0:11:25 > 0:11:27before he had the opportunity to do that.
0:11:28 > 0:11:30Yeah, we need to move forward to the house now.
0:11:32 > 0:11:34- He's locked up. - We've got him, we've got him.
0:11:34 > 0:11:35- He's in.- Yeah, he's got gear on him.
0:11:35 > 0:11:38He had street deals of heroin and crack cocaine,
0:11:38 > 0:11:41so therefore he was arrested under suspicion of intent to supply.
0:11:41 > 0:11:43Erm...
0:11:43 > 0:11:46The heroin and crack cocaine, which was the Class A drugs.
0:11:46 > 0:11:51And as officers had seen him leave his home address
0:11:51 > 0:11:52immediately prior to his arrest,
0:11:52 > 0:11:56we were then given the power to enter that address and to search
0:11:56 > 0:11:59for evidence relating to the offence for which he's been arrested.
0:12:03 > 0:12:06As Murphy is taken in for questioning,
0:12:06 > 0:12:10the remainder of the Quartz team begin the search of his family home.
0:12:10 > 0:12:13- Calm down! - DOGS BARKING
0:12:14 > 0:12:16Hey. Shut up!
0:12:18 > 0:12:20BARKING CONTINUES
0:12:20 > 0:12:24If there's any drugs in this house, you will be arrested, OK?
0:12:24 > 0:12:25Right, well, they won't be mine.
0:12:25 > 0:12:28No, if you tell me about them now, you won't be, possibly.
0:12:28 > 0:12:30- I don't know of any.- All right.
0:12:30 > 0:12:32I've got a spliff on there.
0:12:32 > 0:12:35I'm not too worried about that at the moment. We'll sort that out.
0:12:35 > 0:12:38Yeah, dog's in there. He's chained up, though.
0:12:38 > 0:12:40What's his name, the guy that's just left the house?
0:12:40 > 0:12:42- My son?- Yeah.- Nathan.
0:12:42 > 0:12:44- Is it Nathan?- Yeah.
0:12:44 > 0:12:47And which is his bedroom, then?
0:12:47 > 0:12:49- The right attic, the smallest one. - OK.
0:12:49 > 0:12:51At that side.
0:12:51 > 0:12:53Knowing how the deals operate, they usually keep the drugs
0:12:53 > 0:12:59in the bedroom, so special effort was made on his bedroom.
0:13:00 > 0:13:02We didn't find any drugs in the bedroom,
0:13:02 > 0:13:03a little bit disappointed.
0:13:03 > 0:13:07And it was then that we started searching in the kitchen
0:13:07 > 0:13:11and hung up on the back of the door which led up to the staircase
0:13:11 > 0:13:12was, like, a hooded top.
0:13:12 > 0:13:16- 'Just calm yourself down.- Calm down!'- There's some shots of either
0:13:16 > 0:13:20heroin or crack cocaine in that pocket and then some more in here.
0:13:20 > 0:13:22I would suspect that the brown one is the heroin
0:13:22 > 0:13:25- and then the white ones are wraps of crack cocaine.- 'Just calm down!'
0:13:25 > 0:13:28There's several bowls of shots here.
0:13:28 > 0:13:30- 'What is it?- Class A drugs find. - Is it?'
0:13:30 > 0:13:34Lofty! Lofty! We've found the shots, mate.
0:13:35 > 0:13:37The search is proving to be fruitful.
0:13:37 > 0:13:40But you are in the house where drugs have been found so you could be...
0:13:40 > 0:13:42- I don't live here!- I know, I know.
0:13:42 > 0:13:45You've already got your hand on my back for one thing.
0:13:45 > 0:13:47Your stuff's upstairs, isn't it?
0:13:47 > 0:13:49Your stuff is upstairs, isn't it?
0:13:49 > 0:13:51Why are you in there with the cameras?!
0:13:51 > 0:13:56Downstairs, the officers think they may have found another substance,
0:13:56 > 0:13:58this time under the kitchen sink.
0:13:58 > 0:14:00Cleaning lint.
0:14:00 > 0:14:02Brasso, you know, for pans.
0:14:02 > 0:14:05If we test it, it's not amphetamine, is that what you're saying?
0:14:05 > 0:14:10It smelt like amphetamine to me, it looked like amphetamine to me
0:14:10 > 0:14:14and he was saying it was Ajax or Brasso or something, I don't know.
0:14:14 > 0:14:17I mean, there's only one way of finding out, really,
0:14:17 > 0:14:19is to get it sent off to the lab.
0:14:19 > 0:14:24But because we suspected that it was drugs, he was arrested as well.
0:14:24 > 0:14:28Well, anyway, you're under arrest on possession of a Class B drug,
0:14:28 > 0:14:30amphetamine. You don't have to say anything, but it may harm
0:14:30 > 0:14:33- your defence if you don't mention... - I'm under arrest for what?
0:14:33 > 0:14:36You're under arrest on suspicion of possession of that.
0:14:36 > 0:14:37It's as simple as that, all right?
0:14:37 > 0:14:39Let me get it right - you're charging me with this?
0:14:39 > 0:14:41No, you're not getting charged.
0:14:41 > 0:14:43We'll just ask you a few questions about that, and if it's not yours,
0:14:43 > 0:14:45there's no issues.
0:14:45 > 0:14:48But because we've got a procedure, you're going to have to come.
0:14:48 > 0:14:51- All right? - I'll come. Not a problem.
0:14:51 > 0:14:54So I'll just put these on you and then we'll take you down the road.
0:14:54 > 0:14:56Right, have a seat in there, fella.
0:14:58 > 0:15:01Following questioning at the police station, the male occupant
0:15:01 > 0:15:05of the house was released with no further action taken against him.
0:15:07 > 0:15:10But the outcome for Nathan Murphy was far worse.
0:15:11 > 0:15:14He was charged with possessing Class A drugs
0:15:14 > 0:15:16with the intent to supply
0:15:16 > 0:15:19and is now serving a two-year prison sentence.
0:15:31 > 0:15:35In Manchester, Sergeant Nasim and his colleagues are continuing
0:15:35 > 0:15:38their dawn raids on a group of suspected car thieves.
0:15:40 > 0:15:42They've already arrested one
0:15:42 > 0:15:46and are hoping he hasn't alerted his partners in crime.
0:15:46 > 0:15:48They obviously know each other quite well.
0:15:48 > 0:15:52Especially with social media these days, it's very easy to communicate.
0:15:52 > 0:15:55And we had a look at one of the tablets upstairs in the bedroom,
0:15:55 > 0:15:58and there was a message there from one of the other males
0:15:58 > 0:15:59that we're interested in.
0:15:59 > 0:16:02So they obviously communicate quite easily with each other,
0:16:02 > 0:16:05which further hampers the investigation.
0:16:05 > 0:16:07And one of the things that we need to be conscious about
0:16:07 > 0:16:11is the alerting each other that they've been arrested.
0:16:11 > 0:16:14So when we got in, we straightaway seized his mobile phone
0:16:14 > 0:16:17to take that sort of avenue away from him.
0:16:17 > 0:16:19So hopefully, when we arrive at the next address,
0:16:19 > 0:16:22they're unaware that we are attending this morning.
0:16:23 > 0:16:28Next up for an early morning wake-up call is Jordan Irving.
0:16:28 > 0:16:29Jordan had gained a bit of a
0:16:29 > 0:16:31reputation in the community as being the driver.
0:16:31 > 0:16:34They nicknamed him Stig, actually, because of his driving skills.
0:16:35 > 0:16:37The thing about Jordan is he's very distinctive.
0:16:37 > 0:16:42He's very tall and very skinny, so he sticks out like a sore thumb.
0:16:45 > 0:16:46Open the door, please. Police!
0:16:48 > 0:16:51It's the police. Can you open the door?
0:16:55 > 0:16:57- Hey.- Morning.- Sorry to disturb you.
0:16:57 > 0:17:00- Is Jordan in?- Yeah.- Is he in bed?
0:17:00 > 0:17:02No, he's not in bed. He's on the couch.
0:17:04 > 0:17:06Where is he?
0:17:06 > 0:17:08- Where is he?- Police!- Upstairs.- Eh?
0:17:08 > 0:17:12The officers find their man in an upstairs bedroom.
0:17:12 > 0:17:16Sergeant Nasim lays out what Irving's suspected to have done.
0:17:16 > 0:17:20Jordan has absolutely no respect for the police or the community.
0:17:20 > 0:17:22Quite often he'll be involved in stealing these vehicles.
0:17:22 > 0:17:25And you think in terms of what they're actually getting out of it -
0:17:25 > 0:17:27it was a car to use for that night
0:17:27 > 0:17:31before they were dumped or sold on for peanuts, basically.
0:17:31 > 0:17:34So it was quite satisfying going round to his address
0:17:34 > 0:17:35and arresting him.
0:17:43 > 0:17:46There's a number of items that we've seized from the address.
0:17:46 > 0:17:49Couple of pair of trainers and a mobile phone.
0:17:49 > 0:17:52Previously, we've used footwear for forensic analysis
0:17:52 > 0:17:55from addresses where burglaries have taken place
0:17:55 > 0:17:56and match the pattern.
0:17:56 > 0:17:59So maybe that's why, one of the reasons why he was a bit reluctant
0:17:59 > 0:18:01to tell us which trainers he'd been wearing.
0:18:01 > 0:18:03We've recovered a pair from the stairs,
0:18:03 > 0:18:05and if you look at the bottom of them,
0:18:05 > 0:18:07they look like they're quite fresh,
0:18:07 > 0:18:08i.e. - they've been worn quite recently.
0:18:08 > 0:18:12'Are you being serious? Have you seen the state of the...bedrooms?'
0:18:12 > 0:18:15Have you? Have the seen the state of the bedrooms?!
0:18:15 > 0:18:20He's a 13-year-old lad and he's abused his bedroom...on camera!
0:18:20 > 0:18:21So...
0:18:21 > 0:18:23We've got a job to do, we've got to go in there.
0:18:23 > 0:18:25We were reasonable in terms of the search
0:18:25 > 0:18:29and what we left there, but she was obviously upset about
0:18:29 > 0:18:31the invasion of her private space.
0:18:31 > 0:18:34But at the end of the day, if her son's going to commit a crime,
0:18:34 > 0:18:36we are going to go to the address.
0:18:37 > 0:18:41With two suspects arrested and now in custody,
0:18:41 > 0:18:44the Nominal Enforcement Team can continue their hunt
0:18:44 > 0:18:46for the rest of the gang.
0:18:57 > 0:19:02Each year in the UK, there are around 50,000 robberies.
0:19:05 > 0:19:08Surveillance cameras in businesses and banks
0:19:08 > 0:19:11have helped bring many of those responsible to justice.
0:19:12 > 0:19:16But CCTV footage alone isn't enough.
0:19:16 > 0:19:20Violent offences like armed robbery need thorough investigation.
0:19:23 > 0:19:25And in Greater Manchester,
0:19:25 > 0:19:28that's the job of the Serious Organised Crime Group.
0:19:29 > 0:19:32Right, thanks very much, everybody, for coming to this meeting
0:19:32 > 0:19:35in relation to Operation Saker.
0:19:35 > 0:19:38I'm sure you're all aware we've got four people in custody now
0:19:38 > 0:19:40who we're going to be interviewing in due course.
0:19:40 > 0:19:42And what we need to do today is to go through
0:19:42 > 0:19:46the offences that we suspect that these four have been involved in.
0:19:46 > 0:19:48Every single day that you come into work,
0:19:48 > 0:19:50you never know what you'll come in to.
0:19:50 > 0:19:54Robbery, drugs, kidnap, extortion.
0:19:54 > 0:19:56the run of the mill stuff, really.
0:19:59 > 0:20:02The group are currently investigating eight armed robberies
0:20:02 > 0:20:05carried out in Greater Manchester and beyond.
0:20:06 > 0:20:10The gang behind them has terrorised bookmakers and shop workers,
0:20:10 > 0:20:13brandishing firearms and making threats.
0:20:13 > 0:20:15These were really nasty robberies.
0:20:15 > 0:20:17They were going in with their faces covered,
0:20:17 > 0:20:19they had a sawn-off shotgun,
0:20:19 > 0:20:22so it must have been absolutely terrifying for the victims
0:20:22 > 0:20:24in these cases.
0:20:24 > 0:20:26You know, they're just doing an honest day's work,
0:20:26 > 0:20:29and the next thing, they've got people coming in
0:20:29 > 0:20:32with their faces covered, balaclavas, face coverings
0:20:32 > 0:20:33and they're pointing guns in their face.
0:20:33 > 0:20:36Some of them, they actually put the guns to the heads of these people.
0:20:39 > 0:20:42So far, the police have arrested and charged four men
0:20:42 > 0:20:44in relation to the robberies -
0:20:44 > 0:20:50Rahman Richards, Kyodo Freeman, Jake Prempay and Omar Berryman.
0:20:50 > 0:20:54But they believe there could be a fifth gang member out there.
0:20:54 > 0:20:56We had intelligence which suggested
0:20:56 > 0:20:59that there was another person involved.
0:20:59 > 0:21:02Albeit we had four people who we knew were responsible,
0:21:02 > 0:21:05in these kind of offences, you always have other people
0:21:05 > 0:21:08that drop in and drop out at any point.
0:21:08 > 0:21:11And that's why it's really important that we follow every line of inquiry
0:21:11 > 0:21:14just to make sure that we're not missing owt.
0:21:14 > 0:21:17The team have a Photofit image of a suspect
0:21:17 > 0:21:19and an address in the Salford area.
0:21:24 > 0:21:27A covert detective is leading the operation on the ground.
0:21:31 > 0:21:3219442 Foxtrot.
0:21:32 > 0:21:34'Morning. Go ahead.'
0:21:34 > 0:21:37Good morning. Could you create us a flin, please,
0:21:37 > 0:21:39for a Section 8 PACE warrant execution?
0:21:42 > 0:21:43'I will do.
0:21:43 > 0:21:45'You're on the wrong channel.'
0:21:45 > 0:21:48MAN SPEAKS INDECIPHERABLY OVER RADIO
0:21:49 > 0:21:52- With the Lexus in the drive?- Yeah.
0:22:02 > 0:22:04KNOCKING AT DOOR
0:22:05 > 0:22:06Got the warrant, Ray?
0:22:09 > 0:22:11HE KNOCKS FORCEFULLY
0:22:13 > 0:22:14It's the police.
0:22:17 > 0:22:20Good morning. Greater Manchester Police.
0:22:20 > 0:22:22Got a warrant to search your property. All right to come in?
0:22:22 > 0:22:24Is anybody else in the house?
0:22:26 > 0:22:28Right, OK. We've got a warrant to search the house, all right?
0:22:28 > 0:22:31It's in connection with a robbery investigation.
0:22:31 > 0:22:35We're looking for items in connection with robbery offences.
0:22:35 > 0:22:36OK?
0:22:36 > 0:22:38The suspect isn't at home.
0:22:38 > 0:22:41His mother is, and she's distressed.
0:22:42 > 0:22:44It can be upsetting for family members.
0:22:44 > 0:22:47You know, they don't particularly want the police in their house
0:22:47 > 0:22:49at the end of the day, but we've got a job to do.
0:22:49 > 0:22:52And at the end of the day, we had a lot of really, really upset victims
0:22:52 > 0:22:54and people have been absolutely petrified,
0:22:54 > 0:22:56so it's only right and proper that we do
0:22:56 > 0:22:59a really thorough investigation to get to the bottom of these crimes.
0:23:03 > 0:23:05The manhunt may have drawn a blank for now,
0:23:05 > 0:23:09but the team hope the search will yield positive results.
0:23:11 > 0:23:13We did recover some clothing and some footwear,
0:23:13 > 0:23:17which we then are able to take away and examine that
0:23:17 > 0:23:22in comparison to CCTV evidence, and that's what we did in this case.
0:23:22 > 0:23:24We were able to then establish whether that person
0:23:24 > 0:23:27or if those clothes or the footwear were present or not.
0:23:39 > 0:23:41Earlier, Manchester's
0:23:41 > 0:23:44Nominal Enforcement Team made two arrests.
0:23:46 > 0:23:49They're investigating a spate of recent car thefts
0:23:49 > 0:23:54and are now about to give a third suspect a surprise alarm call.
0:23:59 > 0:24:00Come on, open the door.
0:24:02 > 0:24:04Watch that razor wire there, lad.
0:24:06 > 0:24:10One of the team heads round the back to prevent a possible escape.
0:24:13 > 0:24:16They've got a dog. Just let them know at the back.
0:24:16 > 0:24:17A dog?
0:24:17 > 0:24:20I can hear a dog, mate. It might be next door but just let them know.
0:24:22 > 0:24:24- Hiya. Are you doing OK? - Morning. Give me a minute.
0:24:26 > 0:24:29- Police!- Put some clothes on, mate.
0:24:29 > 0:24:33Once again, he was in bed with his girlfriend.
0:24:33 > 0:24:34Not best pleased.
0:24:34 > 0:24:37Quite a cocky attitude, in terms of he didn't think we'd got
0:24:37 > 0:24:38a lot of evidence in terms of
0:24:38 > 0:24:40getting him in to the police station.
0:24:42 > 0:24:43He'd taken these photographs of cars
0:24:43 > 0:24:45which obviously didn't belong to them
0:24:45 > 0:24:47and they felt, obviously, they were quite proud
0:24:47 > 0:24:50they were getting these vehicles, evading capture,
0:24:50 > 0:24:53and taking photos as a group.
0:24:53 > 0:24:55And then putting them on social media.
0:24:56 > 0:25:00The suspect is detained and taken off to custody for questioning.
0:25:01 > 0:25:05It's been a productive morning for the Nominal Enforcement Team.
0:25:06 > 0:25:08We've sort of hit gold, really, this morning.
0:25:08 > 0:25:11We've done lucky. I think the five o'clock start's helped us.
0:25:11 > 0:25:13We were able to get out early and we've...
0:25:13 > 0:25:14Yeah, we've done OK, getting all three.
0:25:17 > 0:25:20The team have now arrested three suspects,
0:25:20 > 0:25:23but the operation is only just beginning.
0:25:24 > 0:25:27That's the easy bit out of the way, if you like, the arrest phase.
0:25:27 > 0:25:30Now comes the hard work with the interviewing
0:25:30 > 0:25:33and, obviously, liaising with the CPS.
0:25:33 > 0:25:36And that'd leave... The last thing of the day would be
0:25:36 > 0:25:38ringing the victims of crime
0:25:38 > 0:25:41that these lads have been, sort of, wreaking havoc on
0:25:41 > 0:25:45and informing them that we've got someone charged with,
0:25:45 > 0:25:47sort of, their incident.
0:25:51 > 0:25:52Watch your step.
0:25:54 > 0:25:56Before officers can interview their suspect
0:25:56 > 0:25:59about any possible connection to the stolen cars,
0:25:59 > 0:26:02he must be booked in by the custody sergeant.
0:26:04 > 0:26:07Conspiracy to commit burglary, Sarge.
0:26:07 > 0:26:09Between 26/8/13
0:26:09 > 0:26:13and 14/8/14,
0:26:13 > 0:26:1713 burglaries where high-powered vehicles have been stolen.
0:26:17 > 0:26:20This lad is believed to be one of five responsible.
0:26:21 > 0:26:24- Yeah, I will do.- 'What, are they getting seized, then?'
0:26:24 > 0:26:25Yeah. Here's your trainers.
0:26:25 > 0:26:28They're obviously quite foolish in terms of the actions that
0:26:28 > 0:26:30led us towards apprehending them,
0:26:30 > 0:26:34but they're very brazen, they've absolutely no respect for the law,
0:26:34 > 0:26:35they've absolutely no respect for
0:26:35 > 0:26:37the people that they take the property from.
0:26:37 > 0:26:39Erm...
0:26:39 > 0:26:41They feel like everything revolves around them,
0:26:41 > 0:26:43in terms of their offending.
0:26:43 > 0:26:45And I'm sure they get quite a bit of a buzz out of it, in terms of
0:26:45 > 0:26:49the excitement they got planning where they're going to and stuff.
0:26:49 > 0:26:53But absolutely no regard for the victims and the damage,
0:26:53 > 0:26:56the untold damage it leaves them with for the future.
0:27:10 > 0:27:14In Greater Manchester, the Serious Organised Crime Group
0:27:14 > 0:27:17are investigating a series of violent armed robberies.
0:27:19 > 0:27:23The police have arrested four people they believe are responsible.
0:27:27 > 0:27:32But they think there may be a fifth gang member still at large.
0:27:32 > 0:27:35KNOCKING AT DOOR
0:27:35 > 0:27:37Good morning. Greater Manchester Police.
0:27:37 > 0:27:39Got a warrant to search your property.
0:27:39 > 0:27:42So far, they've been unable to find him.
0:27:42 > 0:27:43Let's get inside and I'll explain to you.
0:27:43 > 0:27:45We were then contacted by his
0:27:45 > 0:27:47solicitor, who wanted to make
0:27:47 > 0:27:49arrangements so that he could
0:27:49 > 0:27:50hand himself in.
0:27:50 > 0:27:53That's something that happens on quite a few occasions.
0:27:53 > 0:27:54So we make those arrangements.
0:27:54 > 0:27:56At the end of the day, it's just important that
0:27:56 > 0:27:58we speak to that person, find out if
0:27:58 > 0:28:01they were involved in the offence or not,
0:28:01 > 0:28:03if they've got any kind of alibi.
0:28:03 > 0:28:07We have to keep a really open mind in relation to these investigations.
0:28:09 > 0:28:11The man proves true to his word.
0:28:11 > 0:28:14He does turn up to the police station as promised.
0:28:15 > 0:28:19He's been arrested by myself at 2.30, call number is 14832.
0:28:19 > 0:28:23He was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit robbery.
0:28:23 > 0:28:28It's a series of eight linked robberies across Greater Manchester
0:28:28 > 0:28:32and Derbyshire area, whereby black males have been committing
0:28:32 > 0:28:36armed robberies against convenience stores and bookmakers
0:28:36 > 0:28:39with the use of a single-barrel sawn-off shotgun.
0:28:39 > 0:28:40Can I have your hat?
0:28:40 > 0:28:42- Yeah.- Cheers.
0:28:42 > 0:28:46When he came into the police station and then he was interviewed
0:28:46 > 0:28:50at the police station and gave various pieces of information,
0:28:50 > 0:28:52which we then followed up on.
0:28:52 > 0:28:55And as a result of that, he was initially bailed
0:28:55 > 0:28:57and then no further action was taken against him.
0:29:00 > 0:29:02Following a thorough investigation,
0:29:02 > 0:29:06the male who handed himself in was released without charge.
0:29:06 > 0:29:09You've got to follow every line of inquiry in relation to
0:29:09 > 0:29:11these types of investigations, and we do that.
0:29:11 > 0:29:13We make sure it's really thorough and,
0:29:13 > 0:29:15albeit there's sometimes that people don't like
0:29:15 > 0:29:18the fact that they've been arrested or that the house has been searched,
0:29:18 > 0:29:20it's really important that we do it
0:29:20 > 0:29:22because if we're going to prove they're innocent,
0:29:22 > 0:29:25then we've got to follow all those valid lines of inquiry,
0:29:25 > 0:29:27and that's what happened on this occasion.
0:29:28 > 0:29:33But for the four already in custody, it was a very different outcome.
0:29:33 > 0:29:36All later appeared in court and received sentences
0:29:36 > 0:29:40ranging from six to 15 years for the armed robberies.
0:29:42 > 0:29:45Operation Saker was a fantastic investigation
0:29:45 > 0:29:48into a group of criminals who had absolutely no regard at all
0:29:48 > 0:29:50for the public.
0:29:50 > 0:29:52They produced a firearm, which was a sawn-off shotgun,
0:29:52 > 0:29:54on a number of these offences.
0:29:54 > 0:29:58The people who were working in these locations were absolutely petrified,
0:29:58 > 0:30:01and I'm sure are still scared to this day.
0:30:01 > 0:30:03And they had no regard at all for those people.
0:30:03 > 0:30:06At the end of the day, we all have family and friends
0:30:06 > 0:30:08who perhaps work in these types of establishments
0:30:08 > 0:30:10where they were committing offences,
0:30:10 > 0:30:13so you know that people are safer, the public are safer.
0:30:13 > 0:30:16So you just know that deep down - you've done your job,
0:30:16 > 0:30:18you've taken dangerous criminals off the streets.
0:30:18 > 0:30:21And it just makes the world a little bit safer place
0:30:21 > 0:30:23for everybody else to live in.
0:30:33 > 0:30:37West Yorkshire - over 2,000 square kilometres
0:30:37 > 0:30:40policed by almost 5,000 officers.
0:30:41 > 0:30:46Its largest city is Leeds, home of the Operation Quartz team,
0:30:46 > 0:30:48which tackles drugs and firearms offences.
0:30:49 > 0:30:51OK. Good morning, everybody, and welcome.
0:30:51 > 0:30:53I'm just going to go through...
0:30:53 > 0:30:56Today, they're on the trail of a man who's wanted for both.
0:30:56 > 0:31:00Information we have is intelligence states that a Steven Deegan,
0:31:00 > 0:31:03born 11/7/70, is dealing controlled drugs,
0:31:03 > 0:31:06namely cocaine and amphetamine.
0:31:06 > 0:31:08So the intention for today is to execute a warrant
0:31:08 > 0:31:10under the Misuse of Drugs Act,
0:31:10 > 0:31:12secure the property and the occupants present,
0:31:12 > 0:31:14conduct a thorough search of the premises
0:31:14 > 0:31:17and arrest for any substantive offences.
0:31:20 > 0:31:25Along with drugs, officers also expect to find weapons.
0:31:25 > 0:31:29Deegan is believed to possess two unserviceable shotguns
0:31:29 > 0:31:32and one serviceable high-powered air rifle.
0:31:35 > 0:31:38Because of the seriousness of the alleged offences,
0:31:38 > 0:31:41the officers will give their suspect no warning.
0:31:51 > 0:31:52Police!
0:31:52 > 0:31:54A man appears at the door...
0:31:54 > 0:31:57- If you've got a lock on that door, undo it now.- Open the door.
0:31:57 > 0:32:00..but then decides against letting the officers in.
0:32:00 > 0:32:03He's running upstairs. Keep going. Get out of the road, Jim.
0:32:04 > 0:32:06There's another bolt there.
0:32:06 > 0:32:09Watch it, mate. On the chin.
0:32:09 > 0:32:11- Go, in!- Police officers!
0:32:11 > 0:32:14- Get him secured.- Police officers!
0:32:14 > 0:32:16It's 25 past. Get some clothes for him, yeah?
0:32:16 > 0:32:19If you were to hear a great big banging
0:32:19 > 0:32:21coming from your door, you're going to look to see what it is
0:32:21 > 0:32:22and who it is.
0:32:22 > 0:32:26And, er...if you're in that world,
0:32:26 > 0:32:28erm...it could be a variety of people.
0:32:28 > 0:32:31It could be the police, it could be a rival drug dealer,
0:32:31 > 0:32:33it could be anybody.
0:32:33 > 0:32:37And we've had operations in the past where, believe it or not,
0:32:37 > 0:32:40the people have been relieved that it is the police
0:32:40 > 0:32:42because if it wasn't us, it was someone else coming
0:32:42 > 0:32:45with a more sinister intention than what we've got for them.
0:32:45 > 0:32:49With their suspect detained, the officers can start
0:32:49 > 0:32:51the search for the items detailed on the warrant.
0:32:55 > 0:32:56Blimey.
0:33:00 > 0:33:04Sam's located the drugs here, so looks like there's
0:33:04 > 0:33:08the amphetamine there and the cocaine in that little yellow tub.
0:33:08 > 0:33:11I'd say that's a substantial amount for anybody to have,
0:33:11 > 0:33:13you know, as a street dealer.
0:33:13 > 0:33:16Probably a couple of thousand pounds of street money there.
0:33:16 > 0:33:19OK, mate. You're under arrest for suspicion of supplying Class A drug.
0:33:19 > 0:33:21You don't have to say anything, but it may harm your defence
0:33:21 > 0:33:23if you don't mention when questioned
0:33:23 > 0:33:25something you later rely on in court.
0:33:25 > 0:33:27Anything you do say may be given in evidence.
0:33:27 > 0:33:28Do you understand that?
0:33:29 > 0:33:33So other than this, is there another firearm here at this address?
0:33:33 > 0:33:36Just stay there. Just sit down.
0:33:36 > 0:33:38- If you just, sort of, explain. - There's one here.
0:33:43 > 0:33:45Even just looking round, straightaway there's
0:33:45 > 0:33:48what looked to be a shotgun on the mantelpiece.
0:33:48 > 0:33:51Just into the dining room, there looked to be another shotgun
0:33:51 > 0:33:54in two or three pieces leaned up against the wall.
0:33:54 > 0:33:58And then there was what looked to be an all-signing, all-dancing
0:33:58 > 0:34:00high-powered air rifle.
0:34:00 > 0:34:03And so, we found them sort of...
0:34:03 > 0:34:06Well, you just seen them in the address straightaway.
0:34:06 > 0:34:07Do you hold a shotgun licence?
0:34:07 > 0:34:08OK.
0:34:08 > 0:34:12Arrest him for possession of a Section 1 without certificate.
0:34:12 > 0:34:15OK, so obviously, you're...
0:34:16 > 0:34:19You're also under arrest, at this time, on suspicion of
0:34:19 > 0:34:23possession of Section 1 firearm, OK?
0:34:26 > 0:34:29Steven Deegan is taken off to custody for questioning
0:34:29 > 0:34:32and the team will continue their search for evidence.
0:34:39 > 0:34:42CLOCK TICKING
0:34:44 > 0:34:48In North Manchester, the Nominal Enforcement Team have tracked down
0:34:48 > 0:34:52three suspects in connection with a spate of car thefts.
0:34:53 > 0:34:57The gang believed to have been responsible have been brazen enough
0:34:57 > 0:35:01to take trophy photographs of themselves in the stolen vehicles.
0:35:01 > 0:35:06Evidence of Megane turning up and dropping off the Mercedes.
0:35:06 > 0:35:08- The silver one?- A-Class, yeah.
0:35:08 > 0:35:11It's an '06 plate.
0:35:11 > 0:35:12But there were two Meganes stolen.
0:35:12 > 0:35:14- So we don't know which one of the two it is?- No.
0:35:14 > 0:35:17- Renault Megane.- Yeah.
0:35:17 > 0:35:20Officers have had to analyse all the photos in preparation
0:35:20 > 0:35:22for the court hearing,
0:35:22 > 0:35:25a detailed and painstaking process.
0:35:25 > 0:35:27They always stood in front of the registration plate,
0:35:27 > 0:35:31so we couldn't actually make out the registration plate of that car.
0:35:31 > 0:35:33So what we had to do was link that car to a particular burglary.
0:35:33 > 0:35:36And the sort of things we did were look at
0:35:36 > 0:35:38particular details of that vehicle - there might have been
0:35:38 > 0:35:41a sticker in the rear window - then speak to the victim
0:35:41 > 0:35:43to see if they could identify
0:35:43 > 0:35:45if there's any sort of stickers in their vehicle.
0:35:45 > 0:35:47Because there was a number of vehicles,
0:35:47 > 0:35:49it's putting all that together as a jigsaw
0:35:49 > 0:35:52and making sense of where these vehicles have gone from,
0:35:52 > 0:35:54who was actually associated to those vehicles
0:35:54 > 0:35:56and those people on the photos that we didn't know,
0:35:56 > 0:35:59so we had to go through a process of identifying them,
0:35:59 > 0:36:01making those associations,
0:36:01 > 0:36:04so we could present a good, solid case at court.
0:36:10 > 0:36:13A few weeks later, four suspects are attending a bail hearing
0:36:13 > 0:36:15at Manchester Magistrates' Court.
0:36:18 > 0:36:22Sergeant Nasim and Detective Chadwick are there to witness the outcome.
0:36:23 > 0:36:25- Any news?- Yeah, it's good news.
0:36:25 > 0:36:27All four have been remanded in custody
0:36:27 > 0:36:29and it's adjournment for the next couple of weeks.
0:36:29 > 0:36:31Erm...
0:36:31 > 0:36:34It was hard work, really, because the case was complex.
0:36:34 > 0:36:37And I think, in all fairness to the CPS,
0:36:37 > 0:36:41though he did his best to explain the various aspects of the case,
0:36:41 > 0:36:44Jack actually had to take the witness stand and swear oath
0:36:44 > 0:36:48and clarify some points, which definitely went in our favour,
0:36:48 > 0:36:50so I'm really glad we actually came this morning.
0:36:53 > 0:36:57In the end, there was insufficient evidence to connect
0:36:57 > 0:36:59the suspects with the burglary charges.
0:37:01 > 0:37:05However, one suspect received a two-year suspended sentence
0:37:05 > 0:37:08and 100 hours community service for ten counts
0:37:08 > 0:37:11of handling stolen goods, namely the cars.
0:37:14 > 0:37:17Jordan Irving is currently serving 14 months in prison
0:37:17 > 0:37:21for four counts of handling stolen goods.
0:37:21 > 0:37:24Quite often we feel that people are committing offences
0:37:24 > 0:37:25and sometimes laughing in our faces,
0:37:25 > 0:37:27but we haven't quite got enough evidence
0:37:27 > 0:37:29to actually put in front of the court,
0:37:29 > 0:37:31and actually being able to do that
0:37:31 > 0:37:33gives us a massive sense of satisfaction.
0:37:43 > 0:37:45- Go! In!- Police officers!
0:37:45 > 0:37:46Get him secured.
0:37:46 > 0:37:50In the Beeston area of Leeds, the Quartz team have raided the home
0:37:50 > 0:37:53of suspected drug dealer Steven Deegan.
0:37:55 > 0:37:57As he is taken away for questioning,
0:37:57 > 0:37:59the search for evidence gets under way.
0:38:08 > 0:38:10Well, everything has a place, doesn't it?
0:38:10 > 0:38:12And everything's got to go in its place.
0:38:12 > 0:38:14So this, yeah. No, I'm not happy about that.
0:38:14 > 0:38:16And...
0:38:16 > 0:38:19I mean, how can you go to bed on the night and leave that like that?
0:38:19 > 0:38:21I wouldn't be able to sleep.
0:38:21 > 0:38:24Even if the dishes were like that and I got in at 3am,
0:38:24 > 0:38:26I'd have to wash them all before I went to sleep.
0:38:33 > 0:38:40Officers discover large wads of cash inside the house...
0:38:40 > 0:38:41920.
0:38:41 > 0:38:45..along with CS gas spray and other weapons.
0:38:45 > 0:38:47This is a samurai sword.
0:38:47 > 0:38:50People use them as ornaments.
0:38:50 > 0:38:53And the blade has had some use.
0:38:53 > 0:38:56So, yeah, obviously another nasty piece of kit.
0:38:56 > 0:39:00And there's the issue of the potentially unlicensed guns
0:39:00 > 0:39:02that still needs to be addressed.
0:39:02 > 0:39:04Looks like a dismantled shotgun,
0:39:04 > 0:39:06full-barrelled, double-barrelled one.
0:39:06 > 0:39:11One's on display on the mantelpiece, which is a double-barrelled as well,
0:39:11 > 0:39:15and then there's this really...looks like high-powered air weapon as well
0:39:15 > 0:39:17with, like, all the canisters and stuff,
0:39:17 > 0:39:19so...SOCO here.
0:39:21 > 0:39:23We're not firearms experts.
0:39:23 > 0:39:26We have the luxury of several
0:39:26 > 0:39:29brilliant firearms experts on tap.
0:39:29 > 0:39:31So, erm...
0:39:31 > 0:39:34whenever we recover a firearm or a suspected firearm,
0:39:34 > 0:39:37the golden rule which we can't go wrong with
0:39:37 > 0:39:42is we treat it as though it's a genuine, viable, live,
0:39:42 > 0:39:46lethal firearm that's illegal, until we're told otherwise.
0:39:51 > 0:39:54CHATTER OVER RADIO
0:39:54 > 0:39:57There's knives and that.
0:39:57 > 0:39:59I think they're the ones that go on your belt.
0:39:59 > 0:40:01Following PC Herbert's call,
0:40:01 > 0:40:04specialist firearms officers are sent in.
0:40:04 > 0:40:08They're legal to own, them. It's purely for an air rifle,
0:40:08 > 0:40:11and the only way of determining whether an air rifle's illegal
0:40:11 > 0:40:12is by testing the power on it.
0:40:12 > 0:40:15Obviously, if it's over 12ft/lbs, then it's illegal.
0:40:15 > 0:40:18- All right, OK. - But we can't tell you that today.
0:40:18 > 0:40:20Yeah, that's fine. Yeah.
0:40:21 > 0:40:24If we ever find a firearm, or a suspected firearm,
0:40:24 > 0:40:28we stop straightaway. And that's because we don't know
0:40:28 > 0:40:32the condition of it, where it's been, who's handled it,
0:40:32 > 0:40:35if it's loaded or not, if it's safe to handle.
0:40:35 > 0:40:40So we then ask for armed officers to attend at the scene.
0:40:40 > 0:40:44And what they do is what's called prove, or make the firearm safe
0:40:44 > 0:40:47to handle and safe to carry and so on.
0:40:47 > 0:40:50What's the legitimate use for these, then?
0:40:50 > 0:40:52- Hunting. Hunting vermin. - Hunting?- Yeah.
0:40:52 > 0:40:57- Farmland, sort of?- Yeah. Rabbits, squirrels, rats - stuff like that.
0:40:57 > 0:40:59Safety's off.
0:40:59 > 0:41:05- It has got a magazine in it, mate, underneath.- Right.
0:41:05 > 0:41:07Scenes of Crime Officers are also requested to attend,
0:41:07 > 0:41:11who photograph the exhibits as best as you can in situ.
0:41:11 > 0:41:14Then only when the Firearms and Scenes of Crimes Officers
0:41:14 > 0:41:16are happy they've finished,
0:41:16 > 0:41:19we can then remove the firearms from the scene.
0:41:19 > 0:41:21It's a very sophisticated bit of kit.
0:41:21 > 0:41:24If I saw that green dot on me, I wouldn't be happy.
0:41:26 > 0:41:29Armed officers have examined the weapons now.
0:41:29 > 0:41:31The first one, which was on the mantelpiece,
0:41:31 > 0:41:33is going to have to be sent off to the lab
0:41:33 > 0:41:35cos we don't know whether it can be fired or not
0:41:35 > 0:41:37or whether it can be adapted to fire,
0:41:37 > 0:41:40so that's the...we're arranging that now.
0:41:40 > 0:41:42The one that was on the floor down here looks like
0:41:42 > 0:41:45an all-singing, all-dancing, high-powered air weapon,
0:41:45 > 0:41:48again, which may or may not be illegal, depending on
0:41:48 > 0:41:49how powerful it is.
0:41:49 > 0:41:52And they're examining the third one now, which looks to be
0:41:52 > 0:41:55in very similar condition to that one that was up there.
0:41:55 > 0:41:56There's quite a fair amount
0:41:56 > 0:41:59that looks like amphetamine, cocaine in there as well.
0:41:59 > 0:42:02So you've got a house here with a guy who's got guns,
0:42:02 > 0:42:06he's got CS spray, he's got drugs, he's got cash.
0:42:06 > 0:42:08Everything we look for, we've found here,
0:42:08 > 0:42:11so it's been a successful warrant.
0:42:11 > 0:42:15Even though there was a substantial haul of weapons,
0:42:15 > 0:42:18in the end, they were all legally licensed.
0:42:19 > 0:42:22However, Steven Deegan later appeared in court regarding
0:42:22 > 0:42:26the Class B substances and the CS gas spray.
0:42:26 > 0:42:28He was found not guilty of supply
0:42:28 > 0:42:31but guilty of possession of amphetamine
0:42:31 > 0:42:35and ordered to pay £255.
0:42:35 > 0:42:39We've had some fantastic results over the years and recovered
0:42:39 > 0:42:42some really significant and substantial firearms -
0:42:42 > 0:42:46by that I mean automatic weapons and things like that -
0:42:46 > 0:42:48and we've recovered large quantities of drugs
0:42:48 > 0:42:52which are worth hundreds of thousands of pounds,
0:42:52 > 0:42:54and that's got to affect...
0:42:54 > 0:42:56Someone's going to be really annoyed,
0:42:56 > 0:43:00whoever that may be, whether that's ultimately the person we've got
0:43:00 > 0:43:03or someone else connected to it, either financially
0:43:03 > 0:43:05or to the drugs themselves.
0:43:05 > 0:43:08It's not a good day for them if they've lost that amount of drugs,
0:43:08 > 0:43:09but it's a good day for us.
