0:01:12 > 0:01:16has decided that he won't make the starting line-up.

0:01:16 > 0:01:18For the nine that are still running,

0:01:18 > 0:01:21they've hit the 10K milestone.

0:01:21 > 0:01:23APPLAUSE

0:01:23 > 0:01:24But there's a long way to go.

0:01:24 > 0:01:26I'm in a lot of pain.

0:01:26 > 0:01:27So am I.

0:01:28 > 0:01:29Oh, jeez!

0:01:29 > 0:01:32I just feel like I'm not going to be able to do it.

0:01:32 > 0:01:34- This has knocked my confidence, though.- OK.

0:01:34 > 0:01:35As the marathon approaches,

0:01:35 > 0:01:38they'll be getting some special support from the royals...

0:01:38 > 0:01:40- Hello!- Hi, guys!

0:01:40 > 0:01:43..whose charity, Heads Together, aims to change the way we talk

0:01:43 > 0:01:45about our mental health.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48The shock is the biggest thing and I still feel, 20 years later,

0:01:48 > 0:01:51about my mother, I still have shock within me.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54You're the heroes because you're standing up there,

0:01:54 > 0:01:55very bravely, telling your stories.

0:01:55 > 0:01:59Taking on the 26 punishing miles will not just be

0:01:59 > 0:02:02a tough physical undertaking, but a mental one too...

0:02:03 > 0:02:05Why do people do this?

0:02:06 > 0:02:08I'm doing it, I'm doing it, I'm doing it!

0:02:08 > 0:02:13..but it could set them on a new path for the rest of their lives.

0:02:21 > 0:02:25We are now halfway through training, and coaches Charlie and Chevy,

0:02:25 > 0:02:27who have both found running an effective tool

0:02:27 > 0:02:29for dealing with their own mental health issues,

0:02:29 > 0:02:32are starting the second phase of our runners' training,

0:02:32 > 0:02:33where the marathon will finish.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35- Ta-da!- Morning, gentlemen. - Morning, sir.

0:02:35 > 0:02:37- How are we... - Well, thank you. How are you?

0:02:37 > 0:02:39..this bright frozen morning here?

0:02:39 > 0:02:41Not a morning to be wearing Lycra, is it?

0:02:41 > 0:02:43There are plenty of layers underneath!

0:02:43 > 0:02:45Here we are in front of Buckingham Palace.

0:02:45 > 0:02:48This is the last corner as you come towards the end of the marathon.

0:02:48 > 0:02:49We've brought all our team down today.

0:02:49 > 0:02:53Why bring them out when they are still only halfway through training?

0:02:53 > 0:02:55It's important to just start visualising it, really.

0:02:55 > 0:02:57The better they can visualise it,

0:02:57 > 0:03:00the more prepared they are going to be for the day at hand.

0:03:00 > 0:03:01This last part on the curve

0:03:01 > 0:03:04is a really difficult part of the marathon.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06It really kicks in at that stage?

0:03:06 > 0:03:07The enormity of what you've achieved

0:03:07 > 0:03:10suddenly starts to hit you once your feet hit The Mall.

0:03:10 > 0:03:12- Morning! - Billy, how are you? Nice to see you.

0:03:12 > 0:03:14- Hey! You know where it's at! - Hello!

0:03:14 > 0:03:17- There's a lot of love! - I know, it's all these cuddles!

0:03:17 > 0:03:18A lot of love.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22In 10 weeks' time, The Mall will be a sea of runners

0:03:22 > 0:03:26reaching the end of 26.2 gruelling miles.

0:03:26 > 0:03:31Completing it will be as much of a challenge mentally as physically

0:03:31 > 0:03:35and Chevy has a strategy to help them prepare themselves emotionally.

0:03:35 > 0:03:36Traffic lights.

0:03:36 > 0:03:38That's your finish line.

0:03:38 > 0:03:43I want to talk about visualisation and there is a lot of science behind

0:03:43 > 0:03:47top athletes using their imagination to help them perform better.

0:03:47 > 0:03:49If we can imagine something,

0:03:49 > 0:03:52our brains will learn to do it more efficiently.

0:03:52 > 0:03:54So, we're going to close our eyes.

0:03:54 > 0:03:58I really want you to start creating this picture in your mind, guys.

0:03:58 > 0:04:00All this training and you're at the start line.

0:04:00 > 0:04:03I want you to look around and I want you to see each other.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06What does the energy of the crowd feel like?

0:04:06 > 0:04:08I want you to imagine that.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11Halfway through the process, they have overcome huge amounts

0:04:11 > 0:04:13to get to this point.

0:04:13 > 0:04:17They've shown real strength of character to take on the training.

0:04:17 > 0:04:19All of us at some stage have got some level

0:04:19 > 0:04:21of mental health difficulty in their life.

0:04:21 > 0:04:25These aren't a group of people that are outside of society.

0:04:25 > 0:04:26This is society.

0:04:26 > 0:04:29And what I like about it is they're so different

0:04:29 > 0:04:33and so representative of different people across the board.

0:04:33 > 0:04:35Amongst them, Jake. He's a bar manager.

0:04:35 > 0:04:37Georgie is a police detective.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40Paul works as a removal man.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43And Mel is a hairdresser and mum of three.

0:04:43 > 0:04:45Who are you looking out for in the crowds?

0:04:45 > 0:04:47I want you to find a loved one.

0:04:48 > 0:04:50How does that make you feel?

0:04:51 > 0:04:52It did make me feel quite sick

0:04:52 > 0:04:54when we were talking about it,

0:04:54 > 0:04:55but in a good way, you know?

0:04:55 > 0:04:58This is going to be, probably... well, the biggest challenge

0:04:58 > 0:05:01of my life, really, as far as physically.

0:05:01 > 0:05:03And also mentally, as well.

0:05:05 > 0:05:09Rhian recently completed a 17-mile run to commemorate the fifth

0:05:09 > 0:05:12anniversary of her little boy, George,

0:05:12 > 0:05:14who died suddenly of pneumonia.

0:05:15 > 0:05:19Five days later, traumatised by the loss, her husband, Paul,

0:05:19 > 0:05:21took his own life.

0:05:23 > 0:05:26Rhian has since been suffering severe anxiety

0:05:26 > 0:05:29and the effects of post-traumatic stress.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34I can't live my life forever in their shadows.

0:05:34 > 0:05:35I can't.

0:05:35 > 0:05:39I want to, but I can't, and it's time I got out there

0:05:39 > 0:05:43and to cross that finish line will make me feel

0:05:43 > 0:05:46like I've accomplished something,

0:05:46 > 0:05:49but for the first time in a long time, I'm worth something.

0:05:50 > 0:05:51You've done it.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54You've completed 26.2 miles...

0:05:54 > 0:05:56Yeah, it does seem way more real.

0:05:56 > 0:05:58Yeah, it's like, actually, in a few months' time,

0:05:58 > 0:06:01we'll be right here running it and crossing the finish line,

0:06:01 > 0:06:03- which is pretty crazy. - Yeah. Mad, isn't it?

0:06:03 > 0:06:05You're running your race,

0:06:05 > 0:06:07hear people cheering.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10So, I was just imagining myself, like, wanting to give.

0:06:10 > 0:06:11Then I imagined that I continued

0:06:11 > 0:06:15and then I saw, like, my son's head and, you know,

0:06:15 > 0:06:16then I saw my daughter, you know?

0:06:16 > 0:06:19It just... It just got me a bit emotional.

0:06:23 > 0:06:24I want you to do one final thing for me.

0:06:26 > 0:06:27A little dance.

0:06:28 > 0:06:33What does that little victory dance in your minds look like?

0:06:33 > 0:06:34- You OK?- Yeah.

0:06:34 > 0:06:36- Aww! - It's emotional.

0:06:38 > 0:06:40Have you allowed yourself to think about not finishing it,

0:06:40 > 0:06:42- or not doing it?- No.- No.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45- No.- The only way I see myself not finishing is if I get injured.- Yeah.

0:06:45 > 0:06:47And that will be heartbreaking.

0:06:47 > 0:06:49- For me, I'm not just doing this for myself.- Yeah.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52If I had heard my story come from someone else,

0:06:52 > 0:06:55- that would have changed my life. - Not a psychiatrist or a counsellor.

0:06:55 > 0:06:57- Yeah.- Just somebody else.

0:06:57 > 0:06:59Just a normal person that I could identify with

0:06:59 > 0:07:01or I had something in common with

0:07:01 > 0:07:03or that I felt it was coming from a real place.

0:07:03 > 0:07:05It would have changed my life.

0:07:06 > 0:07:10At 23, Claudia is the youngest runner.

0:07:10 > 0:07:15She works in public relations and lives with purely obsessional OCD,

0:07:15 > 0:07:17Obsessive Compulsive Disorder,

0:07:17 > 0:07:22which means she has intense and distressing intrusive thoughts.

0:07:22 > 0:07:27I remember as a child having weird mental rituals

0:07:27 > 0:07:30that I thought were normal.

0:07:30 > 0:07:34Which would be things like if I didn't touch the bedpost

0:07:34 > 0:07:37within one second then my whole family is going to die

0:07:37 > 0:07:38and stuff like that.

0:07:38 > 0:07:41It would go through phases and I thought they were completely normal,

0:07:41 > 0:07:44I thought everyone did that - it was just a kind of game in my head.

0:07:45 > 0:07:49It became more intense as I grew up and I was terrified.

0:07:49 > 0:07:51I couldn't be alone with my own thoughts.

0:07:53 > 0:07:57I couldn't do anything, couldn't feed myself, I couldn't...

0:08:00 > 0:08:01I couldn't do anything.

0:08:02 > 0:08:05And I just didn't see the point in life any more.

0:08:07 > 0:08:11Claudia didn't seek help with her problems until she was 17

0:08:11 > 0:08:15and has also since been diagnosed with depression and anxiety.

0:08:17 > 0:08:19Something that I wish I'd known when I was 17,

0:08:19 > 0:08:22is that mental illness isn't the end of your life.

0:08:22 > 0:08:24It's not a death sentence.

0:08:24 > 0:08:25It's not...

0:08:26 > 0:08:29It's not you committing yourself to being mentally ill forever.

0:08:29 > 0:08:31It's something you can live with.

0:08:36 > 0:08:38The training's only going to get harder.

0:08:38 > 0:08:40The intensity's going to ramp up,

0:08:40 > 0:08:45so how many will we have by the time we hit the start of the marathon?

0:08:45 > 0:08:47I really believe in this lot.

0:08:47 > 0:08:49I think they're going to do all right,

0:08:49 > 0:08:51but then I'm not running, they are.

0:08:56 > 0:08:59All of the runners suffer from depression

0:08:59 > 0:09:02and we are hoping that running, the release of endorphins,

0:09:02 > 0:09:05the routine of training, can provide a coping mechanism

0:09:05 > 0:09:07to help them gain control of it.

0:09:07 > 0:09:09DOG BARKS

0:09:12 > 0:09:14When I joined up to this,

0:09:14 > 0:09:17it was about how I can improve my depression.

0:09:17 > 0:09:18It's definitely helped me.

0:09:18 > 0:09:20I'm finding my feet again. I'm finding me again.

0:09:22 > 0:09:24I don't like the training.

0:09:24 > 0:09:26I don't like running, but running feels necessary for me.

0:09:26 > 0:09:28If I've done a decent run in the day,

0:09:28 > 0:09:31the next morning I get up feeling OK.

0:09:31 > 0:09:33It's a release, I think.

0:09:33 > 0:09:36We're all putting one foot in front of the other.

0:09:39 > 0:09:42But one runner is behind schedule in their training.

0:09:42 > 0:09:45- More?- Yes, please.

0:09:45 > 0:09:49Shereece has been struggling to find the time between family commitments

0:09:49 > 0:09:51and juggling her career as a singer

0:09:51 > 0:09:54and now she's picked up a knee injury.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57- Cheers! - Cheers!

0:10:01 > 0:10:03Shereece lived with depression as a teenager

0:10:03 > 0:10:06and after the birth of her first child

0:10:06 > 0:10:08she suffered postnatal depression -

0:10:08 > 0:10:11something that her family struggled to accept.

0:10:11 > 0:10:14I was so low. I couldn't see the world again.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16I kind of didn't want to be here any more.

0:10:16 > 0:10:19I didn't see the worth of me being here, being around.

0:10:19 > 0:10:23And it sounds really bad, but at that time you go blank.

0:10:23 > 0:10:26You don't actually see the cup half-full, you see it just empty.

0:10:26 > 0:10:27You don't see any positive.

0:10:27 > 0:10:29You don't see the good bits.

0:10:29 > 0:10:31And even though I saw the positive in my daughter,

0:10:31 > 0:10:33I still couldn't see that at the time.

0:10:33 > 0:10:35Everything just washed away from me.

0:10:37 > 0:10:40There were times when she came in

0:10:40 > 0:10:42and she just broke down crying

0:10:42 > 0:10:44with the little baby in a buggy.

0:10:44 > 0:10:47I said, "What's wrong? What's going on with my daughter?

0:10:47 > 0:10:48"What's wrong with her?"

0:10:49 > 0:10:53A lot of people don't really understand the real meaning

0:10:53 > 0:10:55of depression and what it can lead to.

0:10:55 > 0:10:59It's only now that I'm beginning to learn, at my age,

0:10:59 > 0:11:01I'm beginning to learn a lot more about depression.

0:11:08 > 0:11:11Claudia, Jake and Paul are taking on the next milestone.

0:11:11 > 0:11:16It's their most difficult challenge so far - the half marathon.

0:11:17 > 0:11:20Yeah. No, I feel really good, I feel really confident.

0:11:20 > 0:11:21Not this confident!

0:11:21 > 0:11:25Have you seen this?! I'm in the athletes' pen!

0:11:25 > 0:11:27I really don't think I said on the sign-up thing

0:11:27 > 0:11:30that I thought I was going to do it in one hour 30 or less,

0:11:30 > 0:11:33but that's what my number says, so that's a bit embarrassing!

0:11:33 > 0:11:36Even if I have to walk the whole bloomin' thing,

0:11:36 > 0:11:37I know I can finish it.

0:11:37 > 0:11:40Mentally, I feel a bit on edge at the moment.

0:11:40 > 0:11:44ALL: Three, two, one!

0:11:44 > 0:11:45STARTING HORN SOUNDS

0:11:49 > 0:11:52Jake has only recently moved back to Brighton.

0:11:53 > 0:11:5612 months ago, he reached a crisis point

0:11:56 > 0:11:59and returned to his mum's to recover.

0:11:59 > 0:12:02Everything feels out of your control when you're depressed.

0:12:03 > 0:12:07My mind forces these really negative thoughts upon me

0:12:07 > 0:12:10and I just have to deal with them and I can't snap out of it.

0:12:10 > 0:12:14You forget what feeling happy feels like and what's the point

0:12:14 > 0:12:17and wouldn't my family be better off without me, you know?

0:12:17 > 0:12:20Really horrible stuff enters your mind,

0:12:20 > 0:12:24which is why it's so important for me to now have an effective way

0:12:24 > 0:12:26of dealing with those feelings.

0:12:27 > 0:12:30Because without them, I...

0:12:32 > 0:12:34You know, I wouldn't even want to say.

0:12:39 > 0:12:41It's quite hot, as you can tell.

0:12:41 > 0:12:43Red face.

0:12:46 > 0:12:48- How are you feeling?- Good. - Happy?- Yeah.

0:12:48 > 0:12:49I need a wee!

0:12:49 > 0:12:51Need a wee! Ha-ha!

0:12:51 > 0:12:53At this stage in training,

0:12:53 > 0:12:59completing 13.1 miles will keep them on schedule for the London Marathon.

0:13:00 > 0:13:04It's the furthest distance Paul, the man who hates running,

0:13:04 > 0:13:06has ever covered.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09There's no way I could ever dream of doing that six months ago.

0:13:09 > 0:13:11I just ran for 13 miles and I didn't stop!

0:13:11 > 0:13:13That's ridiculous!

0:13:16 > 0:13:20These three runners are doing far better than they ever thought.

0:13:21 > 0:13:22Oh, I feel great.

0:13:22 > 0:13:25I might just carry on running and never feel depressed again

0:13:25 > 0:13:27and just not care what anyone thinks of me.

0:13:30 > 0:13:31Well done!

0:13:33 > 0:13:36I was so happy to see you.

0:13:36 > 0:13:37I never do that.

0:13:37 > 0:13:39I never go, "Woo!"

0:13:41 > 0:13:42Oh, it was amazing.

0:13:42 > 0:13:44I feel a bit, like, high.

0:13:44 > 0:13:46- Yeah, I know. I do, as well. - Endorphins.

0:13:46 > 0:13:49I feel proud of you!

0:13:52 > 0:13:56It's now six-and-a-half weeks to the marathon

0:13:56 > 0:13:59and Rhian's training has come to a standstill.

0:13:59 > 0:14:02She's making her second visit in a week to the physio.

0:14:02 > 0:14:03Oh, jeez!

0:14:03 > 0:14:05- It's quite tender, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:14:05 > 0:14:08- It makes me want to be sick. - Yeah. You all right?- Yeah, yeah.

0:14:08 > 0:14:11- Do you want some water? - No, I'm fine. It's just so painful.

0:14:11 > 0:14:14It's all fallen apart a bit and my mood's dropped, as well.

0:14:14 > 0:14:18You think... You were so excited and my confidence was getting better

0:14:18 > 0:14:20and now I'm, like, "I can't do anything."

0:14:20 > 0:14:22So, I feel...

0:14:24 > 0:14:26I just feel like I'm not going to be able to do it.

0:14:26 > 0:14:28I just want to prove that I am worth something.

0:14:31 > 0:14:34I just want to do something for myself

0:14:34 > 0:14:36that will make me feel better.

0:14:40 > 0:14:44Coping with the mental pressure of marathon training is a challenge,

0:14:44 > 0:14:46but it's even tougher for our runners.

0:14:48 > 0:14:51Since training started, Poppy has found her own way of dealing

0:14:51 > 0:14:55with negative thoughts that stem from a troubled childhood.

0:14:55 > 0:14:57Yeah, I write a lot.

0:14:57 > 0:14:58A heck of a lot.

0:14:58 > 0:15:01This one says, "Today I started off wanting to quit

0:15:01 > 0:15:03"and not wanting to ever run again,

0:15:03 > 0:15:06"but then I finally got out and went for a run. Yea!

0:15:06 > 0:15:08"After the run I felt amazing.

0:15:08 > 0:15:10"As the day has gone on and I've started to feel like

0:15:10 > 0:15:12"I can't do anything right or well enough.

0:15:12 > 0:15:15"This is all a learning curve and I will get there,

0:15:15 > 0:15:17"with or without the people around me."

0:15:17 > 0:15:22Obviously, the more personal ones I don't want people to read.

0:15:22 > 0:15:25Yeah, I'm not going to read you that one, that one's a bit neep.

0:15:31 > 0:15:34Poppy is 26.

0:15:34 > 0:15:36Her childhood depression and anxiety

0:15:36 > 0:15:39have been compounded by post-traumatic stress

0:15:39 > 0:15:41following a robbery in her home.

0:15:41 > 0:15:45PTSD is a humongous thing in my life.

0:15:45 > 0:15:49Prime example, I was in Camden the other day walking around,

0:15:49 > 0:15:52and just the sheer amount of people

0:15:52 > 0:15:53set me off.

0:15:53 > 0:15:58And I just went into a mad, anxious panic attack-ish mode

0:15:58 > 0:16:00and I am either going to break down and start crying

0:16:00 > 0:16:02or I'm going to get really angry

0:16:02 > 0:16:05and do anything and everything to protect myself.

0:16:05 > 0:16:10So that is what I deal with on an every-single-day basis.

0:16:13 > 0:16:16I think for me, running a marathon,

0:16:16 > 0:16:20I want to show everyone and anyone that's ever doubted me,

0:16:20 > 0:16:23or looked for the worst in me,

0:16:23 > 0:16:25to see that I have actually done something...

0:16:26 > 0:16:28..that is pretty incredible.

0:16:31 > 0:16:35To have any chance of completing this year's London Marathon,

0:16:35 > 0:16:38the runners must now not only clock up the miles...

0:16:38 > 0:16:41Get that breath under control.

0:16:41 > 0:16:44..but engage in an intense strengthening regime

0:16:44 > 0:16:45to ensure their bodies

0:16:45 > 0:16:48are capable of withstanding the strain.

0:16:48 > 0:16:51Tighten up the core. I want everything nice and tight.

0:16:51 > 0:16:56Go down. Hold it, hold it, hold it!

0:16:56 > 0:17:01Running on the spot, welcome to your hamstrings. Go, go, go.

0:17:05 > 0:17:08But not everyone is on course.

0:17:08 > 0:17:10With six-and-a-half weeks to go,

0:17:10 > 0:17:14Jake has developed a debilitating ankle injury.

0:17:14 > 0:17:16I'm gutted, obviously,

0:17:16 > 0:17:22cos Brighton Half Marathon was just probably one of the best experiences

0:17:22 > 0:17:27of my life, and I'm really starting to see the correlation

0:17:27 > 0:17:31between exercise and my state of mind.

0:17:31 > 0:17:33I want you to push hard against my hand.

0:17:33 > 0:17:35It's been a tough week.

0:17:35 > 0:17:37I feel really worried about my ankle.

0:17:37 > 0:17:42Hopefully, I can carry on and be there on the start line on the 23rd.

0:17:45 > 0:17:47Yeah.

0:17:49 > 0:17:53Shereece has managed to come back from her knee injury.

0:17:53 > 0:17:56But she's now several weeks behind in training.

0:17:56 > 0:17:59With her partner at home looking after the children,

0:17:59 > 0:18:03- Chevy has asked Shereece to come to a one-to-one.- How are you?

0:18:03 > 0:18:06I've lost it. I don't know where to start.

0:18:06 > 0:18:09- Basically, it just got worse and worse.- Start at the beginning.

0:18:09 > 0:18:12I'm so tired and I'm so drained, however, I can't stop.

0:18:12 > 0:18:15I just feel it's impossible for me to stop.

0:18:15 > 0:18:17Even if I get a day off, it's never a day off,

0:18:17 > 0:18:19I am always still wakening up at six in the morning,

0:18:19 > 0:18:23just to make a life for myself and my children, you know.

0:18:23 > 0:18:25I think everyone thinks I'm dealing with it nicely

0:18:25 > 0:18:27instead of, like, "OK"...

0:18:27 > 0:18:30So you need a conversation. Right?

0:18:30 > 0:18:32- SOBS:- Cos everyone thinks I'm so strong.

0:18:32 > 0:18:34OK, all right. I know. I know.

0:18:34 > 0:18:36My family just think I've got it wrapped tight

0:18:36 > 0:18:39because I'm usually so good at everything I do,

0:18:39 > 0:18:40but this is not my comfort zone.

0:18:42 > 0:18:45OK. So...

0:18:45 > 0:18:48- Do you want some backup?- Yeah. - Yeah, all right.

0:18:49 > 0:18:53This is the time that you need for you to do this.

0:18:53 > 0:18:56- This is the support that we need to get there, right?- Yeah.

0:18:56 > 0:18:58And you need to be honest with them about your journey, right?

0:18:58 > 0:19:01You know, you need to ask for help.

0:19:01 > 0:19:04This doesn't feel like it's going to be

0:19:04 > 0:19:06too much of a challenge to get over, to get everyone on side.

0:19:06 > 0:19:07I could do so much more.

0:19:07 > 0:19:09We'll do that. We'll plan it. We'll sort it out.

0:19:09 > 0:19:13- We'll get you on track. Cool? - Yeah, absolutely.- Yeah? Yeah?

0:19:13 > 0:19:14All right, good.

0:19:16 > 0:19:18We'll provide Shereece with all the support we can

0:19:18 > 0:19:21to give her the best chance of making it

0:19:21 > 0:19:22to the marathon start line.

0:19:33 > 0:19:36This is Silverstone, the home of Formula 1 Grand Prix racing,

0:19:36 > 0:19:39but this weekend, it's got the pre-London Marathon half marathon.

0:19:39 > 0:19:42It's suggested that people who are going to run the marathon

0:19:42 > 0:19:45take part in this as a bit of a warm up, and our guys and girls

0:19:45 > 0:19:48are here today to test themselves and see how far they can get.

0:19:51 > 0:19:53For Sam, Georgie and Poppy,

0:19:53 > 0:19:56it's their first half marathon during training.

0:19:56 > 0:19:59Do you know what? I need this today. I need this in my life.

0:20:01 > 0:20:02- For Claudia, it's her second.- Cool?

0:20:02 > 0:20:05I know I can do it. That's the main thing.

0:20:05 > 0:20:07Mel isn't quite ready yet,

0:20:07 > 0:20:11and she'll join Jake on the sidelines, along with Rhian.

0:20:11 > 0:20:13- You look fantastic.- Mwah. Thank you.

0:20:13 > 0:20:15I can't run today, and I can't train.

0:20:15 > 0:20:18Yeah, but isn't the problem that you've been over-training anyway?

0:20:18 > 0:20:21- Yeah.- Cos you're the other one that's not running cos you've got,

0:20:21 > 0:20:24- like, again, injury.- Yeah. What ankle is it? Is it your left?

0:20:24 > 0:20:27- This one.- Oh, mine's the other one. - Inside. The inside.- Yeah. Same.

0:20:27 > 0:20:30- Right on the inside.- You've got one pair of good legs between you.- Yeah.

0:20:30 > 0:20:33- We could've done it like this. - Yeah, I know.

0:20:33 > 0:20:35There is some extra moral support.

0:20:35 > 0:20:39Steve, who had to drop out, has already achieved a victory today.

0:20:39 > 0:20:42He's overcome his severe anxiety of long train journeys

0:20:42 > 0:20:45and large crowds to spur the runners on.

0:20:45 > 0:20:47- Hello, sweetheart.- Oh!

0:20:50 > 0:20:53- How are you?- I'm so tired. - Are you tired?

0:20:53 > 0:20:54- Were you at work?- Yeah. - Oh, no.

0:20:54 > 0:20:56What time did you finish work?

0:20:56 > 0:20:59- Four in the morning.- Sweetheart, go on, are you running?- Yeah.

0:20:59 > 0:21:02Oh, come on. You'll be fine. Do your best. Do what you can.

0:21:04 > 0:21:08Working a late night shift has heightened Poppy's anxiety.

0:21:08 > 0:21:12It's very overwhelming. This is extremely overwhelming.

0:21:12 > 0:21:14There's thousands of people here.

0:21:14 > 0:21:17For me, this is the most scariest thing I've done.

0:21:17 > 0:21:19HOOTER

0:21:22 > 0:21:25Yay!

0:21:27 > 0:21:30It's great to have most of the team back together.

0:21:30 > 0:21:35But I've noticed that being unable to run is affecting Jake's mood.

0:21:35 > 0:21:37So how are you doing now? Are you managing?

0:21:37 > 0:21:41Me, about a year or two ago, just wouldn't have come today,

0:21:41 > 0:21:42there is no way,

0:21:42 > 0:21:45cos I haven't been feeling great all week, and it's just,

0:21:45 > 0:21:47I don't want to be the downer.

0:21:47 > 0:21:51So there's obviously some improvement there.

0:21:51 > 0:21:53Today would have been a total write-off if I'd have been at home.

0:21:53 > 0:21:56I would have had the most horrible day knowing that everyone was here

0:21:56 > 0:21:59and I've just binned it off because I don't want to do it.

0:21:59 > 0:22:03I'd rather you were here, because it feels like you're still part of it.

0:22:03 > 0:22:07You are one of the better people to be here to maybe offer advice and...

0:22:08 > 0:22:10- Yeah.- ..that kind of thing.- Maybe.

0:22:10 > 0:22:12THEY LAUGH

0:22:12 > 0:22:15Oh, Jake!

0:22:20 > 0:22:22Feeling good.

0:22:22 > 0:22:27Whether my legs will say the same thing after, I don't know.

0:22:27 > 0:22:29THEY SHOUT ENCOURAGEMENT

0:22:29 > 0:22:31Are we ready to hit fifth gear yet, Chev?

0:22:31 > 0:22:33No, nice and light! Nice and light.

0:22:36 > 0:22:39- I'm having a lot of pain.- So am I.

0:22:39 > 0:22:40We're in pain.

0:22:42 > 0:22:44I'm worried about Poppy.

0:22:44 > 0:22:46You know, she really wants to do this today,

0:22:46 > 0:22:47she needs to do this today.

0:22:47 > 0:22:49This can make and it can break you,

0:22:49 > 0:22:50and she's had a lot of bad days lately,

0:22:50 > 0:22:52so it would just be lovely for her

0:22:52 > 0:22:55to have a really great day and feel really good about herself.

0:22:56 > 0:22:58My knees are just hurting.

0:23:00 > 0:23:03I'm finding it really hard to take control of my breath.

0:23:04 > 0:23:08I want to show the people that are really close around me that,

0:23:08 > 0:23:10"Look, I've done something really good

0:23:10 > 0:23:12"and I've done something that's amazing."

0:23:12 > 0:23:16My siblings, we all came from, like, the same background.

0:23:17 > 0:23:20And we've all gone in different directions, so for me,

0:23:20 > 0:23:22it will be acceptance for myself.

0:23:22 > 0:23:26But I think I'm running it for them, as well, to prove to them that...

0:23:26 > 0:23:28Oh, my God, I'm going to cry.

0:23:28 > 0:23:33This is what I don't want to happen. To prove to them that I can do it.

0:23:35 > 0:23:37(Oh, my God.)

0:23:44 > 0:23:46- Do you want to walk for a minute? - Yeah.

0:23:51 > 0:23:54Sam and George are the fittest and most experienced runners

0:23:54 > 0:23:56in the whole group.

0:23:56 > 0:24:01- There he is! Sam!- Sam! - Eyes up, eyes up, eyes up.

0:24:04 > 0:24:07- Moving well.- He looked good, didn't he?

0:24:07 > 0:24:09Yeah, really good.

0:24:09 > 0:24:11Are you all right? I'm proud of you. Well done.

0:24:13 > 0:24:15Come on!

0:24:18 > 0:24:20- You look energised again. - Thank you. Thank you.

0:24:25 > 0:24:29Poppy and Claudia have been on their feet for over two hours.

0:24:30 > 0:24:35Poppy has never pushed herself this hard, either mentally or physically.

0:24:35 > 0:24:39- You are a legend, Claudia.- Why?

0:24:39 > 0:24:40I wouldn't have done it.

0:24:40 > 0:24:42I'm just doing what you're doing, mate.

0:24:44 > 0:24:48Poppy set out on just two hours' sleep.

0:24:48 > 0:24:51But with help from Claudia, she's found the mental strength

0:24:51 > 0:24:56to keep going and make it to the finish line.

0:24:56 > 0:24:58Here they are. Here they are. Here they are! Yes!

0:25:01 > 0:25:04Yes, yes, yes, yes!

0:25:07 > 0:25:08Go on!

0:25:12 > 0:25:13You looked beautiful.

0:25:14 > 0:25:17Brilliant. That was amazing!

0:25:17 > 0:25:20- Thank you.- Come on. Come on.

0:25:20 > 0:25:22SHE SOBS

0:25:22 > 0:25:24You are allowed to be proud of yourself, you know.

0:25:24 > 0:25:27You are allowed to be proud of yourself.

0:25:27 > 0:25:31SHE CRIES

0:25:31 > 0:25:33You are putting one foot in front of the other

0:25:33 > 0:25:35every single day at the moment.

0:25:35 > 0:25:38This is your day. This is to celebrate you.

0:25:44 > 0:25:51Are you proud of Claudia? Who did it with you? Who did it with her?

0:25:51 > 0:25:54Be proud together. Be proud together.

0:25:54 > 0:25:57You're amazing. Amazing.

0:25:59 > 0:26:03Hearing everyone say to me how proud they are

0:26:03 > 0:26:06is really hard for me to accept.

0:26:06 > 0:26:10And the people that I WANT the appreciation from aren't here.

0:26:10 > 0:26:12And aren't supporting me through this.

0:26:12 > 0:26:15People that I've only just met are already showing me

0:26:15 > 0:26:19more than I get anywhere else.

0:26:19 > 0:26:21I cannot understand that in my head.

0:26:21 > 0:26:24Do you think it might be to do with the fact that these people,

0:26:24 > 0:26:28because of their own situations, and their own mental health issues,

0:26:28 > 0:26:31understand better than the average person?

0:26:31 > 0:26:34- That might be something to do with that.- Yeah, of course. Of course.

0:26:34 > 0:26:37When they see this, they'll understand better.

0:26:38 > 0:26:40I just want to go home and sleep now.

0:26:42 > 0:26:45- You did really good. You did amazing today.- Thank you.

0:26:46 > 0:26:50I'm still making the mistake of trying to rationalise my way

0:26:50 > 0:26:54through mental health. So, succeed in a marathon, you'll be happy.

0:26:54 > 0:26:57Fail, you won't be. Not really as simple as that.

0:26:57 > 0:27:00Have just crossed the line, not feeling happy

0:27:00 > 0:27:02because it's brought up all kinds of other emotions.

0:27:02 > 0:27:04It's always counterintuitive,

0:27:04 > 0:27:07and if you try to stick with the "rationalise your way through",

0:27:07 > 0:27:08it doesn't work.

0:27:08 > 0:27:11You just have to accept how people are telling you that they feel

0:27:11 > 0:27:14on the day and be there to support them. That's what I'm learning.

0:27:14 > 0:27:16You just have to listen and be there to support them.

0:27:18 > 0:27:20But they make a hell of a group, don't they?

0:27:21 > 0:27:22I'm hungry.

0:27:22 > 0:27:24Let's go and find something to eat.

0:27:36 > 0:27:40Let's go down the line. Let's go! Get those feet going.

0:27:40 > 0:27:41A little while ago,

0:27:41 > 0:27:44I did an interview with Prince William who told me that

0:27:44 > 0:27:47he would like to come down and meet some of the guys, so today,

0:27:47 > 0:27:50we have brought everybody to St Mary's University in Twickenham.

0:27:50 > 0:27:53He's bringing his wife and his brother, too.

0:27:53 > 0:27:56So it will be a nice little surprise for our runners.

0:27:58 > 0:28:01'The young royals are patrons of the charity Heads Together.'

0:28:01 > 0:28:03How are you, Your Royal Highness? Good to see you. Hello.

0:28:03 > 0:28:06'Through their work with young people, emergency response,

0:28:06 > 0:28:09'homeless charities and with veterans,

0:28:09 > 0:28:10'they've been inspired

0:28:10 > 0:28:12'to break the stigma surrounding our mental health,

0:28:12 > 0:28:15'raise awareness, and get the nation talking.'

0:28:16 > 0:28:21- Hello.- Hello.- Hi, guys. - We brought some people to say hello.

0:28:22 > 0:28:24Hi, I'm Rhian, nice to meet you.

0:28:24 > 0:28:26Through her involvement with the children's charity,

0:28:26 > 0:28:29Shereece has met the Duchess of Cambridge before.

0:28:29 > 0:28:32- Hi, good to see you again. How are you?- Your hair looks amazing.

0:28:32 > 0:28:35- Thank you.- Are you guys enjoying it? - ALL:- Yes.

0:28:36 > 0:28:38This is a whole new sort of venture for everybody, right?

0:28:38 > 0:28:41Do you find the fact that you are all doing it together,

0:28:41 > 0:28:43and you've all got sort of similar experiences, does that help you all?

0:28:43 > 0:28:46It makes a huge difference when you are doing something

0:28:46 > 0:28:49so big with people that you can relate to.

0:28:49 > 0:28:51Right, take us through a warm up. Start gently running on the spot,

0:28:51 > 0:28:53running on the spot, nice and gently.

0:28:53 > 0:28:55Good, we're going to go quickly, quickly, quickly...

0:28:55 > 0:28:58Back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, back and forth.

0:28:58 > 0:29:01Do you not normally train with three members of the Royal Family?

0:29:01 > 0:29:03I certainly do whenever I want to go down the gym.

0:29:03 > 0:29:05HE LAUGHS

0:29:05 > 0:29:08Is it possible to pull a hamstring on a warm up, that's the question.

0:29:08 > 0:29:10We are going to teach you a few drills.

0:29:10 > 0:29:13Keep your arms nice and locked in. Three, two, one, off you go.

0:29:13 > 0:29:17Can you keep the arms stable without letting them sway? Use that core.

0:29:17 > 0:29:20- Like holding a balloon. - Yeah, exactly, that's it.

0:29:20 > 0:29:24- I feel like I should have a rugby ball.- Surreal, very, very crazy.

0:29:24 > 0:29:29- I ran with Her Royal Highness, Kate. - Let's go. Thank you very much.

0:29:29 > 0:29:31APPLAUSE

0:29:31 > 0:29:33Do you mind me asking you how you guys ended up

0:29:33 > 0:29:35getting involved in the first place?

0:29:35 > 0:29:40A lot of my stuff, except for the PTSD, comes from my childhood.

0:29:40 > 0:29:43I wanted to do it so that younger children

0:29:43 > 0:29:46who might be in a similar environment that I was,

0:29:46 > 0:29:49or a little bit of a turbulent whatever,

0:29:49 > 0:29:52don't have to go down that path and follow their surroundings.

0:29:52 > 0:29:54For me, it was, I love my parents,

0:29:54 > 0:29:56and they've been incredibly supportive,

0:29:56 > 0:29:58but they're of the generation where you didn't talk about it.

0:29:58 > 0:30:01And going through this journey, for me and for them,

0:30:01 > 0:30:03it's been a huge learning curve.

0:30:03 > 0:30:04That it is OK to talk about it,

0:30:04 > 0:30:06and talking about it is the best thing to do.

0:30:06 > 0:30:08That's a huge part of why we are doing this.

0:30:08 > 0:30:10That early intervention,

0:30:10 > 0:30:11do you think that is crucial for both of you?

0:30:11 > 0:30:13The earlier, the better.

0:30:13 > 0:30:16100%. If I would have had good intervention from a young age,

0:30:16 > 0:30:18it would've been perfect for me.

0:30:18 > 0:30:20I mean, presumably once you started realising

0:30:20 > 0:30:22you had mental health issues,

0:30:22 > 0:30:24did you find that the stigma, the taboo was there a lot?

0:30:24 > 0:30:27I think people automatically think, as soon as you say mental health,

0:30:27 > 0:30:29"We have to put you in a straitjacket."

0:30:29 > 0:30:32- It's really not.- I know. - Anxiety is a mental health issue.

0:30:32 > 0:30:35And I reckon half the public have anxiety. You just don't know it.

0:30:35 > 0:30:38- I think you two are incredibly brave. I really do.- Thank you.

0:30:38 > 0:30:40The fact that you are here talking about this,

0:30:40 > 0:30:42it's incredible, it really is. You should be very proud of yourselves.

0:30:42 > 0:30:45- Thank you very much.- I want to give both you both a big hug

0:30:45 > 0:30:47cos I think you are very, very special.

0:30:49 > 0:30:54The reason why I push and fight so much for younger children

0:30:54 > 0:30:57to get recognised, I feel like I've just completed it.

0:30:57 > 0:31:01Cos I've just told, potentially, the future King of the country,

0:31:01 > 0:31:04- why I am doing what I'm doing. - What was his reaction?

0:31:04 > 0:31:06Do you think he's engaged? Do you think he's listening?

0:31:06 > 0:31:07Do you think he cares?

0:31:07 > 0:31:08He was really positive

0:31:08 > 0:31:11and he truly believed and understood what I was saying.

0:31:11 > 0:31:13And then he gave me a hug, which completely blew my mind.

0:31:13 > 0:31:15THEY LAUGH

0:31:15 > 0:31:17What advice would you give, out of interest?

0:31:17 > 0:31:19I mean, experience in the forces, men talking,

0:31:19 > 0:31:21it must be a very hard place.

0:31:21 > 0:31:23I think it's always going to be a big thing.

0:31:23 > 0:31:25Some people want to go to their doctor.

0:31:25 > 0:31:27Some people will go to brothers, sisters, parents.

0:31:27 > 0:31:28Other people will go to mates.

0:31:28 > 0:31:31Other people will go to complete strangers. Try it all.

0:31:31 > 0:31:33And go to wherever you feel more comfortable.

0:31:33 > 0:31:35It was my mum and my dad and my stepmum who said,

0:31:35 > 0:31:37"You need to go to the doctor's."

0:31:37 > 0:31:40You know, and it wasn't me that did it, at first.

0:31:40 > 0:31:42And I could have gone earlier and I could have made the choice.

0:31:42 > 0:31:46And I knew I should have gone. And it's just a case of, like, just go.

0:31:46 > 0:31:49If you think that you have got a problem, just go and see a doctor.

0:31:49 > 0:31:51I think the lads similar to me, or whatever,

0:31:51 > 0:31:54- they probably just think, "I'm just down."- I'm just having a bad day.

0:31:54 > 0:31:56"I'm just having a bad day. You know, like, I'm just down.

0:31:56 > 0:32:00"Pull yourself out of it..." kind of mentality. And it doesn't matter.

0:32:00 > 0:32:02Just go and talk to someone about it.

0:32:02 > 0:32:04What do your families think about you guys doing this?

0:32:04 > 0:32:07I guess for a lot of us, we don't really discuss...

0:32:07 > 0:32:09We keep this to ourselves, you know?

0:32:09 > 0:32:12We don't really talk about it with our close friends and family.

0:32:12 > 0:32:15But even the process of making this documentary has been massive

0:32:15 > 0:32:16because we're going to have to start

0:32:16 > 0:32:18talking to our friends and family about it.

0:32:18 > 0:32:20That's one of the reasons why we started this whole thing,

0:32:20 > 0:32:23cos there was a national conversation that was happening

0:32:23 > 0:32:26and people were talking about mental health more and more and more.

0:32:26 > 0:32:27As a nation, we need to grip this.

0:32:27 > 0:32:29Talking about mental health is best for everybody.

0:32:29 > 0:32:31It doesn't matter who you are.

0:32:31 > 0:32:35How has the training helped with everything? Has it been...

0:32:35 > 0:32:38Have you found that sort of physical-mental connection?

0:32:38 > 0:32:40It was difficult in the beginning because my body was not used

0:32:40 > 0:32:44to anything, I was in such pain. I was miserable. I was stressed.

0:32:44 > 0:32:46But for the past four times I've been training,

0:32:46 > 0:32:48I've had very good runs,

0:32:48 > 0:32:50- but obviously with the kids, it's a bit difficult.- I know.

0:32:50 > 0:32:53- I don't know how you find time. - Running has really helped me.

0:32:53 > 0:32:55I didn't believe it at first.

0:32:55 > 0:32:57When people said, "Oh, running can help you," I said, "No."

0:32:57 > 0:33:00But now that I'm running I'm like, "You know what? They were right.

0:33:00 > 0:33:01"It really does help."

0:33:01 > 0:33:04And that's why I'm so proud and I'm just so thankful that,

0:33:04 > 0:33:08you know, you, and, like, someone as supportive as you,

0:33:08 > 0:33:10have recognised it and is putting it out there.

0:33:10 > 0:33:11You are the heroes, really,

0:33:11 > 0:33:15because you are standing up there very bravely telling your stories.

0:33:15 > 0:33:19And, you know, we hope to shine a light on people like you.

0:33:19 > 0:33:21Because I think that is what the public need to hear.

0:33:21 > 0:33:23Best of luck with your running.

0:33:23 > 0:33:28- Thank you so much.- And the rest of the training as well.

0:33:29 > 0:33:33- I love your jacket.- Thanks, I love yours, too. It's really cool.

0:33:34 > 0:33:37I feel so blessed because they believe in this.

0:33:37 > 0:33:39So it's not like they're just here because they have to,

0:33:39 > 0:33:41they actually believe in this.

0:33:41 > 0:33:43And it makes you feel stronger as a person, to fight more

0:33:43 > 0:33:45and get the message out there.

0:33:46 > 0:33:49Do you feel there is still the stigma connected to mental health?

0:33:49 > 0:33:51With me, now, I'm out about it.

0:33:51 > 0:33:53I won't shut up now talking about mental health.

0:33:53 > 0:33:56And people who know me are just so supportive.

0:33:56 > 0:33:58To think back where I was 12 months ago,

0:33:58 > 0:33:59I'm proud of having depression,

0:33:59 > 0:34:02I'm proud of suffering a mental health disorder,

0:34:02 > 0:34:04and I'm using it in a positive way.

0:34:04 > 0:34:06It has sort of set us on a life journey,

0:34:06 > 0:34:08not just until the marathon,

0:34:08 > 0:34:11it's what we are going to do for the rest of our lives, really.

0:34:11 > 0:34:13How have you managed to deal, yourself,

0:34:13 > 0:34:15with some of these mental health challenges?

0:34:15 > 0:34:17Have you had to just literally deal with them yourself

0:34:17 > 0:34:20and kind of like just take each day as it comes, at times?

0:34:20 > 0:34:22You've had really dark days where that's been just...

0:34:22 > 0:34:25Yeah, obviously, when my son George died, you know,

0:34:25 > 0:34:27life was just, for me, over, really,

0:34:27 > 0:34:29and then when Paul died a few days later...

0:34:31 > 0:34:32I just really struggled.

0:34:32 > 0:34:34So I found my friends were my counsellors, really.

0:34:34 > 0:34:37I think being open about it must help as well, doesn't it?

0:34:37 > 0:34:39Because a lot of people really do hunker down about it

0:34:39 > 0:34:40and don't want to talk about it.

0:34:40 > 0:34:43One of the things we're trying to promote through the campaign

0:34:43 > 0:34:45is just having a conversation with a friend, like you were saying,

0:34:45 > 0:34:48and it's great to hear that that has also helped you.

0:34:48 > 0:34:50It is, and, obviously, what happened to my husband, as well,

0:34:50 > 0:34:52you know, Paul was just such a positive person,

0:34:52 > 0:34:54and for him to hide those feelings of despair...

0:34:54 > 0:34:56Most men do not talk about their mental health issues at all,

0:34:56 > 0:35:00let alone any other problems. Mental health problems is really deep down.

0:35:00 > 0:35:01We don't talk about that.

0:35:01 > 0:35:03I worry about my son, obviously, you know,

0:35:03 > 0:35:05he was only three when my...his dad died,

0:35:05 > 0:35:06and his brother died, you know,

0:35:06 > 0:35:09so I worry about him growing up as well in society,

0:35:09 > 0:35:12so I want to lift the mental health thing, you know,

0:35:12 > 0:35:14for my children, really, as well, as they grow older.

0:35:14 > 0:35:16Yeah. Well, I think you're incredibly strong.

0:35:16 > 0:35:18I don't know how you're managing to do all this.

0:35:18 > 0:35:21- It's incredibly impressive. - Can ask you one question?- Please do.

0:35:21 > 0:35:22- When your mum passed away...- Yeah.

0:35:22 > 0:35:24..you were obviously a bit older than my children,

0:35:24 > 0:35:27- but I obviously worry about them growing up.- Yeah.

0:35:27 > 0:35:29- They'll be OK, won't they? - They'll be absolutely fine.

0:35:29 > 0:35:31With a mum like you, they'll be absolutely fine.

0:35:31 > 0:35:32I promise. That's true. They will be.

0:35:32 > 0:35:35- You've got to...- It's about what's around you, isn't it?- I know, but...

0:35:35 > 0:35:38No, it's the fact that, because you're aware of all this,

0:35:38 > 0:35:41you're already a step ahead of what could happen.

0:35:41 > 0:35:45You try and understand your emotions a lot more than, probably,

0:35:45 > 0:35:47- someone who's just lived life without any issues.- Yeah.

0:35:47 > 0:35:49And I think that's... That's quite critical,

0:35:49 > 0:35:52because it's then explaining to them what

0:35:52 > 0:35:54those emotions mean and why they feel like they do,

0:35:54 > 0:35:57because once you start rationalising a little bit, and you understand,

0:35:57 > 0:35:59"OK, so I'm really angry, or I'm really down,

0:35:59 > 0:36:01"or I'm really upset about something,"

0:36:01 > 0:36:04then you can, kind of, I think, sort of, relativize it

0:36:04 > 0:36:05and, sort of, deal with it.

0:36:05 > 0:36:07Because, like you said, the shock is the biggest thing,

0:36:07 > 0:36:10and I still feel, you know, 20 years later about my mother...

0:36:10 > 0:36:13I still have shock within me, you know, 20 years later.

0:36:13 > 0:36:15And you think... People go, "Shock? That can't last that long,"

0:36:15 > 0:36:17but it does. You never get over it.

0:36:17 > 0:36:21- It's such an unbelievably big moment in your life...- Yeah.

0:36:21 > 0:36:22..that it never leaves you.

0:36:22 > 0:36:24- You just learn to deal with it. - Yeah.

0:36:24 > 0:36:26And, you know, you being there for Holly and Isaac

0:36:26 > 0:36:27is the most important thing,

0:36:27 > 0:36:31because you will provide the blanket of, kind of,

0:36:31 > 0:36:33- stability and understanding that they need.- Yeah.

0:36:33 > 0:36:35And I can't tell you enough, you know,

0:36:35 > 0:36:38that you doing this is an incredibly big, positive step,

0:36:38 > 0:36:42and I really hope it brings you what you need.

0:36:42 > 0:36:43It's something I've been thinking about

0:36:43 > 0:36:46a lot over the last few years, because you see them out there

0:36:46 > 0:36:49in the public eye, happy and getting on with life.

0:36:49 > 0:36:51It just made me want to know,

0:36:51 > 0:36:54"Will my kids be all right?" You know? And when he...

0:36:54 > 0:36:55He was so honest, and he just answered,

0:36:55 > 0:36:58and he said straight up, you know, "They will be all right, you know,

0:36:58 > 0:37:00"if they are brought up in a loving, caring environment."

0:37:00 > 0:37:02Because they've got a great mum?

0:37:04 > 0:37:05- Yeah.- Haven't they?

0:37:05 > 0:37:06Yeah.

0:37:17 > 0:37:21The runners are entering the final stage of training.

0:37:21 > 0:37:24Putting in the miles is now essential.

0:37:25 > 0:37:27And there's good news for Jake -

0:37:27 > 0:37:30after intensive physio, he's back on the road.

0:37:31 > 0:37:33And so is Rhian -

0:37:33 > 0:37:37training with George is reaping benefits for them both.

0:37:37 > 0:37:39- So, Fridays you can do? - Good for me.

0:37:39 > 0:37:41And I'll come over and we'll run your little loop,

0:37:41 > 0:37:43- cos that's what I'm bad at. - Good. And do you know what?

0:37:43 > 0:37:45- It'll make me go out with someone, cos I'm rubbish at that.- Yes.

0:37:45 > 0:37:48- Yes, we'll have each other. - I'll stop being such a loner.

0:37:48 > 0:37:50- Cheers!- Cheers!

0:37:50 > 0:37:53But marathon training never runs smoothly -

0:37:53 > 0:37:56Claudia has been managing a long-term back injury...

0:37:56 > 0:37:58See, that hurts there.

0:37:58 > 0:38:00..and the pain has forced her to stop.

0:38:00 > 0:38:02Oh!

0:38:02 > 0:38:03There we go.

0:38:03 > 0:38:05I feel like I've got quite a high pain threshold,

0:38:05 > 0:38:08but I still want to enjoy it.

0:38:08 > 0:38:11I still want...

0:38:11 > 0:38:13I still want to feel like I've made an accomplishment,

0:38:13 > 0:38:17and I've not just, like, bullied myself into doing it.

0:38:17 > 0:38:20I guess I'm just worried, because it feels like a, kind of,

0:38:20 > 0:38:22tipping point, where I need to make these decisions,

0:38:22 > 0:38:24and I don't really want to,

0:38:24 > 0:38:26because now it's so close that I'm thinking,

0:38:26 > 0:38:28"Am I actually going to be able to do this?"

0:38:28 > 0:38:32And not just that, but, "Is it a good idea?"

0:38:32 > 0:38:33Which is really scary.

0:38:33 > 0:38:34Let that relax.

0:38:36 > 0:38:39It's also a crucial time for Shereece.

0:38:39 > 0:38:43Today she must complete 13.1 miles to stay on track.

0:38:44 > 0:38:48Her partner, Chavez, her children and the rest of her family

0:38:48 > 0:38:51have turned up en masse to help her cross the finish line.

0:38:51 > 0:38:53Go, Shereece!

0:38:53 > 0:38:54Mummy!

0:38:54 > 0:38:56Your mummy, your mummy!

0:38:56 > 0:39:00We've got the family supporting her, so hopefully that should

0:39:00 > 0:39:02give her the motivation and make her feel like,

0:39:02 > 0:39:04"You know what? I don't want to give up.

0:39:04 > 0:39:07"I want to make myself proud, my kids proud and my family proud.

0:39:07 > 0:39:09Go on, Shereece!

0:39:10 > 0:39:12I can't believe she's actually doing it.

0:39:12 > 0:39:13I look at her and I think, "Wow!"

0:39:13 > 0:39:16You know what I mean? She's actually out there. She's running.

0:39:16 > 0:39:18She's come out of her little shell.

0:39:18 > 0:39:22As her family, it really does encourage all of us.

0:39:22 > 0:39:25Go, girl! You're doing well!

0:39:25 > 0:39:27I've told my mum things, and she's listened to me,

0:39:27 > 0:39:30but I don't think she understood it well enough. She was like, "OK."

0:39:30 > 0:39:32But I'm so happy now that I've helped her recognise that

0:39:32 > 0:39:35your mental health is very important.

0:39:36 > 0:39:42It's exciting to watch Mummy because she's not giving up.

0:39:42 > 0:39:44Shereece, just keep going, yeah? Keep going!

0:39:45 > 0:39:48She's on her last lap! She's looking great. She's smiling.

0:39:48 > 0:39:51She's loving it. Her kids and family are running with her.

0:39:51 > 0:39:52What more do you want? It's amazing.

0:39:52 > 0:39:54Keep going!

0:39:54 > 0:39:57Before this project, Shereece had only ever run at school,

0:39:57 > 0:40:00but now she's conquered 13.1 miles.

0:40:00 > 0:40:04Shereece Foster, well done! Finishing her first half-marathon...

0:40:06 > 0:40:07Get your medal!

0:40:07 > 0:40:08Thank you.

0:40:10 > 0:40:12- Auntie SeSe with a medal!- Yay!

0:40:12 > 0:40:14Auntie SeSe with a medal!

0:40:15 > 0:40:17- CHEERING - Yay!

0:40:19 > 0:40:24Do you understand how proud they are of you right now?

0:40:24 > 0:40:27- Shereece... - Go and give them a cuddle!

0:40:27 > 0:40:29CHEERING

0:40:29 > 0:40:31I'm not on the floor. I'm not trying to gasp for air.

0:40:31 > 0:40:33I'm still standing up.

0:40:33 > 0:40:36I'm just really...just proud of myself.

0:40:36 > 0:40:38I did a half-marathon!

0:40:38 > 0:40:39Erm...

0:40:39 > 0:40:41I did a half-marathon!

0:40:49 > 0:40:52All of the runners have now successfully completed

0:40:52 > 0:40:56a half-marathon, but heading for a full marathon will mean

0:40:56 > 0:40:59so much more than just doubling the miles.

0:41:00 > 0:41:01For the last two weeks,

0:41:01 > 0:41:06we've all been willing Claudia's back injury to improve.

0:41:06 > 0:41:08So, where are you at with it at the moment?

0:41:08 > 0:41:09What's the... What's the news?

0:41:09 > 0:41:13- It's just unbelievably painful. - Is it?

0:41:13 > 0:41:17I can't run, so I've not...

0:41:17 > 0:41:18I'm... I've decided not...

0:41:18 > 0:41:21- Not to do the marathon. - ..not to put myself through it.

0:41:21 > 0:41:24I genuinely... Hand on heart, it's one of the hardest decisions

0:41:24 > 0:41:26I've ever had to make.

0:41:26 > 0:41:28And I still, now, seeing everyone running,

0:41:28 > 0:41:31and seeing everyone excited about the marathon -

0:41:31 > 0:41:34you know, it's two weeks tomorrow -

0:41:34 > 0:41:36I still think, "Have I made the right decision?"

0:41:38 > 0:41:40But this was never really about the marathon, was it?

0:41:40 > 0:41:43Are you identifying things that you've got from the process?

0:41:43 > 0:41:45Yeah, absolutely. Yeah.

0:41:45 > 0:41:49I have learnt a lot. I've learnt that it's OK not to be OK.

0:41:49 > 0:41:51You can tell people how you feel,

0:41:51 > 0:41:54and they probably won't react how you expect them to react.

0:41:54 > 0:41:56I'm so... I'm so happy,

0:41:56 > 0:41:59and I'm so grateful that I got to do this, and I...

0:41:59 > 0:42:02I genuinely feel like one day I will finish the marathon...

0:42:02 > 0:42:04- Good. - ..but now's just not the right time.

0:42:04 > 0:42:05But you're not NOT part of it,

0:42:05 > 0:42:08because we're all going to be part of it, right the way up to the end.

0:42:10 > 0:42:12For those able to make the start line,

0:42:12 > 0:42:17the final stage of marathon training is a long run to build up endurance.

0:42:17 > 0:42:19OK, start running on the spot, nice and gently.

0:42:19 > 0:42:23Six of the runners have come together to give each other support.

0:42:23 > 0:42:25Being here with everyone again today,

0:42:25 > 0:42:26you just realise you're not alone,

0:42:26 > 0:42:28and it's going to be a real joint effort,

0:42:28 > 0:42:31and, however nervous we are, we're all going to be in the same boat.

0:42:31 > 0:42:33We're going in three, two, one...

0:42:33 > 0:42:34- TIMER BEEPS - Get lost.

0:42:34 > 0:42:36Go, go, go, go!

0:42:38 > 0:42:42Chevy has assigned individual targets.

0:42:42 > 0:42:45They've each to spend three-and-a-half hours on their feet...

0:42:47 > 0:42:51..but Poppy has decided not to take part.

0:42:51 > 0:42:55He's going to have a go at me, but I just don't feel in it today.

0:42:55 > 0:42:57Do you think you're sabotaging it?

0:42:57 > 0:42:59- No.- No?- Yes. - Are you sure? Yeah.- Maybe.

0:42:59 > 0:43:01- There we go, self-sabotage.- Maybe.

0:43:01 > 0:43:03You know you can do the work and you want to do the work,

0:43:03 > 0:43:05but if you don't do the work, you can say,

0:43:05 > 0:43:07- "Just cos I didn't put the work in," right?- Mm-hmm.

0:43:07 > 0:43:09Stop self-sabotaging. Believe.

0:43:10 > 0:43:11OK.

0:43:11 > 0:43:13Deal? Think about it?

0:43:13 > 0:43:14- Yeah.- OK.

0:43:14 > 0:43:18Like everything, it has its days where it rears its head,

0:43:18 > 0:43:22and I do stuff like this,

0:43:22 > 0:43:23and then instantly regret it,

0:43:23 > 0:43:26cos I want to be there with them running it.

0:43:26 > 0:43:28If I had my running trainers on me right now,

0:43:28 > 0:43:30I would have been trying to catch them up.

0:43:34 > 0:43:38The runners have been on the go for one-and-a-half hours.

0:43:38 > 0:43:39I think I need my knee checked.

0:43:39 > 0:43:41- Shall we have a chat with the physio?- Yes, please.

0:43:41 > 0:43:44Of course. I think that would be a great idea.

0:43:46 > 0:43:47Ugh!

0:43:47 > 0:43:50- OK, so, since my half, which was two weeks ago...- Yeah.

0:43:50 > 0:43:53..I was recovering, obviously, with the pain everywhere,

0:43:53 > 0:43:55but I noticed that this was left painful.

0:43:55 > 0:43:58OK. Have you noticed it if you're out walking upstairs or downstairs?

0:43:58 > 0:44:00- I notice when I come...- Does it hurt more when you come down?

0:44:00 > 0:44:01Yeah, when I come down.

0:44:01 > 0:44:03- It hurts when you come down? - Yeah.- OK.

0:44:03 > 0:44:06Yeah, that's going to be rest and ice.

0:44:06 > 0:44:07Oh, so...

0:44:07 > 0:44:09- SHEREECE GROANS - Oh, no, no, no.

0:44:10 > 0:44:13- What are you thinking, Shereece? - Can I just do some more, like?

0:44:13 > 0:44:18If we push through, the injury's likely to get worse.

0:44:18 > 0:44:21We've done really, really well, but we can't, you know...

0:44:21 > 0:44:24The body is giving you warning signals, as it has been doing.

0:44:24 > 0:44:26The thing that makes this get better is rest.

0:44:26 > 0:44:28This is a hard process.

0:44:28 > 0:44:30I'm not going to be able to do the full marathon, then,

0:44:30 > 0:44:31if that's the case.

0:44:34 > 0:44:37Let's think about everything that you've achieved.

0:44:37 > 0:44:41It's not failure, it's just learning about yourself.

0:44:41 > 0:44:42All right?

0:44:42 > 0:44:44And you've got to listen to your body.

0:44:48 > 0:44:53Shereece's knee injury will take at least two weeks to heal,

0:44:53 > 0:44:57but, like Claudia, it must be her decision to pull out.

0:44:57 > 0:44:59SHEREECE SOBS

0:45:02 > 0:45:04I'm not running.

0:45:04 > 0:45:05- You're not running?- No.

0:45:05 > 0:45:07SOBBING

0:45:08 > 0:45:11I've been through exactly the same thing,

0:45:11 > 0:45:13just a little bit sooner.

0:45:13 > 0:45:16It's heartbreaking, and it really feels like you've, kind of,

0:45:16 > 0:45:17let yourself down, but you haven't.

0:45:17 > 0:45:18In fact, it's...

0:45:18 > 0:45:22I think it's the braver decision to decide that you're not going to

0:45:22 > 0:45:23do it this year.

0:45:23 > 0:45:25- You know?- So, what am I going to tell my daughter, then?

0:45:25 > 0:45:27SHE SIGHS

0:45:27 > 0:45:29Would you want your daughter to do something

0:45:29 > 0:45:31she physically couldn't do? You wouldn't. If she said,

0:45:31 > 0:45:35"Mummy, I've hurt my leg. Should I still run in sports day?"

0:45:35 > 0:45:37You'd say no, wouldn't you?

0:45:37 > 0:45:40- And that doesn't take anything away from her journey.- OK.

0:45:40 > 0:45:42It doesn't take anything away from yours.

0:45:42 > 0:45:46You physically can't run, if you're in physical pain.

0:45:46 > 0:45:47I just need to accept it.

0:45:47 > 0:45:49I just have a hard time accepting defeat.

0:45:49 > 0:45:51I don't know...

0:45:51 > 0:45:53SHEREECE SIGHS

0:45:56 > 0:46:00I need to put the day aside and look at what I gained from this.

0:46:00 > 0:46:05The biggest thing I've learnt is that I've got to accept,

0:46:05 > 0:46:07you know, when I've done something good.

0:46:07 > 0:46:10I've got to learn to just appreciate myself,

0:46:10 > 0:46:13and to say, "All right, you've done well. It's OK. Relax."

0:46:13 > 0:46:15So, it's making me aware of myself.

0:46:15 > 0:46:18It really is making me aware of my mental health

0:46:18 > 0:46:21and saying, "OK, you know what? I do that quite a lot."

0:46:21 > 0:46:24So I can only be in a... I can only be in a better place, right?

0:46:27 > 0:46:31I managed 11.3 miles, which in my language is 18K,

0:46:31 > 0:46:33which sounds much better.

0:46:33 > 0:46:36So, yeah, I feel really good.

0:46:36 > 0:46:38I've done 15 miles.

0:46:38 > 0:46:40I'd probably say it's probably time to stop, just in case,

0:46:40 > 0:46:42cos of my ankle.

0:46:42 > 0:46:43So, yes! Yahoo!

0:46:45 > 0:46:47I mean, this is our final run before the marathon,

0:46:47 > 0:46:49- which is crazy to think.- Mm-hmm.

0:46:49 > 0:46:51This is it. We've got two weeks to go.

0:46:51 > 0:46:53Yeah, I'm just more excited about everything now.

0:46:53 > 0:46:56I'm eager to get to the start, to the start line, yeah.

0:47:03 > 0:47:06After 144 days of hard graft,

0:47:06 > 0:47:11many miles and emotional highs and lows, the big day has arrived.

0:47:12 > 0:47:14I've got up, had a couple of cups of tea,

0:47:14 > 0:47:17showered, hair done..

0:47:17 > 0:47:18All ready.

0:47:20 > 0:47:21Pre-match nerves.

0:47:23 > 0:47:26Once I've put this on, it gets really real.

0:47:26 > 0:47:30My sisters messaged me and told me they was coming, which is amazing.

0:47:30 > 0:47:35It means a lot for me to have them there, and for them to see me

0:47:35 > 0:47:38cross the finish line, which is what they're going to see.

0:47:38 > 0:47:41Obviously, I've got my number, now, ready on my vest.

0:47:41 > 0:47:43I've got a picture of my boys to keep me going.

0:47:43 > 0:47:46I wanted it up on my heart, really, but, erm, obviously,

0:47:46 > 0:47:48the number's going to be in the way.

0:47:48 > 0:47:51I feel like I'm living a future memory. Do you know what I mean?

0:47:51 > 0:47:55Like, I know I'm going to look back on this day forever,

0:47:55 > 0:47:57and that's amazing, and I'm really chuffed.

0:47:57 > 0:48:00I'm relaxed enough and happy enough to just enjoy it.

0:48:00 > 0:48:02Let's rock and roll.

0:48:06 > 0:48:07We started off with ten,

0:48:07 > 0:48:10and we wondered how many would get to the start line.

0:48:10 > 0:48:11They're all here.

0:48:11 > 0:48:13The three that aren't running are sad that they're not,

0:48:13 > 0:48:15but they are going to be here to support the others.

0:48:15 > 0:48:18There's no doubt that they are a team together.

0:48:18 > 0:48:19I think it's amazing.

0:48:19 > 0:48:21- Yay!- Let's get on!

0:48:21 > 0:48:24And the royals have come along to offer some last-minute support.

0:48:24 > 0:48:26CHEERING

0:48:27 > 0:48:29We're here. This is our time.

0:48:29 > 0:48:32We said from day one that you have got this.

0:48:32 > 0:48:37The road will kick back on you, but the road cannot take your mind

0:48:37 > 0:48:39- anywhere that it has not already been.- Yeah.

0:48:39 > 0:48:42You have been into the darkest of places, so when it is kicking

0:48:42 > 0:48:45- back at you, you keep pushing forward...- Whoo!

0:48:45 > 0:48:49..you run with that power, that energy,

0:48:49 > 0:48:52- you keep going even though you don't want to...- Yeah.

0:48:52 > 0:48:53..and you own today.

0:48:53 > 0:48:56- One, two, three... - ALL:- Mind over marathon!

0:49:11 > 0:49:13Have a great run!

0:49:22 > 0:49:26At the six-mile point, Shereece, Claudia and Steve have joined

0:49:26 > 0:49:30thousands of spectators, and the royals, to cheer the runners on.

0:49:30 > 0:49:31Whoo!

0:49:32 > 0:49:36Just five months ago, Steve's anxiety wouldn't have allowed

0:49:36 > 0:49:39him to battle crowds like this.

0:49:39 > 0:49:41I've done something I never thought I do,

0:49:41 > 0:49:43and I've done it on my own.

0:49:43 > 0:49:44I'm actually here,

0:49:44 > 0:49:48and I hope I can move forward from this now for something better.

0:49:49 > 0:49:51CHEERING

0:49:54 > 0:49:56It's so emotional to think that, you know,

0:49:56 > 0:49:59I should have been there but I'm here supporting everybody.

0:49:59 > 0:50:02I just want to see everybody, and then I can relax,

0:50:02 > 0:50:03so I'm a bit anxious right now.

0:50:03 > 0:50:05I want to see everybody and then I can calm down.

0:50:10 > 0:50:12- Yeah!- Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes!

0:50:12 > 0:50:16Words will never describe how much I want to be with them.

0:50:16 > 0:50:19I desperately, desperately want to be running with them...

0:50:21 > 0:50:24..but it doesn't take away from how happy I am for them.

0:50:24 > 0:50:26CLAUDIA SCREAMS JOYFULLY

0:50:35 > 0:50:38Along the course, family are here to support their loved ones.

0:50:40 > 0:50:42CHEERING

0:50:42 > 0:50:44I think this has been so good for him,

0:50:44 > 0:50:49and I think, without this, I think it would have been very hard,

0:50:49 > 0:50:51and not just for him, but for the family.

0:50:51 > 0:50:53You know, your... The families go through it with them,

0:50:53 > 0:50:57but this has been the best thing ever.

0:50:57 > 0:50:59CHEERING

0:51:07 > 0:51:08Good luck.

0:51:08 > 0:51:11He's still got quite a lot of bound in him, hasn't he?

0:51:11 > 0:51:13- Oh, bless him...- Oh, dear.

0:51:13 > 0:51:15Come on, Rhian!

0:51:15 > 0:51:16- CHEERING - Thank you.

0:51:16 > 0:51:17- She's OK...- Yeah.

0:51:21 > 0:51:25Amazing. Everyone's just shouting my name and supporting me.

0:51:25 > 0:51:26It's absolutely phenomenal.

0:51:51 > 0:51:54just a matter of miles from the finishing line -

0:51:54 > 0:51:59a scene of human strength, determination and compassion.

0:51:59 > 0:52:02All our runners are now entering unknown territory,

0:52:02 > 0:52:05reaching distances beyond their training.

0:52:05 > 0:52:06It's ridiculous.

0:52:06 > 0:52:08I... I...

0:52:08 > 0:52:10- Well, why do people do this? - MAN LAUGHS

0:52:10 > 0:52:14I agree with the running, but do they need to run so far?

0:52:33 > 0:52:35CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:52:38 > 0:52:41After four long hours pounding the streets of London,
