0:00:02 > 0:00:05This programme contains some scenes of a sexual nature

0:00:05 > 0:00:10Pornography is everywhere, and with smartphones and tablets making it easier than ever to get hold of,

0:00:10 > 0:00:13there are fears that each generation is seeing porn earlier than the one before.

0:00:13 > 0:00:16- How old were you when this happened?- Eight.

0:00:16 > 0:00:17You were eight?!

0:00:17 > 0:00:21So how much porn do kids REALLY see?

0:00:21 > 0:00:23I haven't even had to prove my age yet

0:00:23 > 0:00:26and some of the most explicit images I have...

0:00:26 > 0:00:29EVER seen are on this website.

0:00:29 > 0:00:32And what does that mean for a generation

0:00:32 > 0:00:34that always has porn at their fingertips?

0:00:34 > 0:00:38I've seen some pretty scary stuff on the internet.

0:00:38 > 0:00:41To us, it's just normal, because we've seen it that many times.

0:00:41 > 0:00:46To discover the truth about kids and porn, we've done an exclusive survey

0:00:46 > 0:00:51with over 1,000 teens giving it to us straight about what they've seen.

0:00:51 > 0:00:53Who watches porn?

0:00:53 > 0:00:55- Me.- Me.- I'm not going to lie, innit?

0:00:55 > 0:00:57- Yeah.- All of us do.- Yeah.

0:00:57 > 0:00:59And how it makes them feel.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02It sort of makes you feel a bit embarrassed, er,

0:01:02 > 0:01:05because I don't want to look at stuff like that.

0:01:07 > 0:01:10I'll meet the people behind some of what the kids are watching...

0:01:10 > 0:01:14I think people need to understand that, that it's not real. It's...

0:01:14 > 0:01:17It's not how I would have sex at home at all.

0:01:17 > 0:01:19..and find out if they're worried about who's watching.

0:01:19 > 0:01:21GASPS: Aw!

0:01:21 > 0:01:23'I definitely wouldn't change it.'

0:01:23 > 0:01:26I'd do it again, if I could go back in time to do it.

0:01:26 > 0:01:30And as I hear about the effect some say porn has had on them...

0:01:30 > 0:01:32For him to just think that... that I was an object

0:01:32 > 0:01:37that he could use seemed so similar to the images that I saw.

0:01:37 > 0:01:41..I'll discover whether teaching kids about porn is the answer

0:01:41 > 0:01:45and, if so, at what age should that start?

0:01:45 > 0:01:47When we said we were going to school,

0:01:47 > 0:01:49I didn't know it would be primary.

0:01:49 > 0:01:51I mean, these are kids who are sort of 10 and under.

0:01:59 > 0:02:01My name's Jameela Jamil.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03I'm a writer, a presenter and a DJ

0:02:03 > 0:02:06and, every week, I host the Radio 1 Official Chart.

0:02:06 > 0:02:08Last week, I announced that

0:02:08 > 0:02:12Calvin Harris, Alleso and Hurts topped the official chart.

0:02:12 > 0:02:14MUSIC: "Feel So Close" by Calvin Harris

0:02:14 > 0:02:17I've been working in the music industry since I was 19,

0:02:17 > 0:02:19and I'm in touch with thousands of teenagers

0:02:19 > 0:02:21through my blog and on Twitter.

0:02:21 > 0:02:23So, although I'm now in my twenties,

0:02:23 > 0:02:26I still like to think I know what's going on.

0:02:26 > 0:02:27But it seems there's one area

0:02:27 > 0:02:31where I don't know quite as much as I thought I did.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34I think the first time young people see porn,

0:02:34 > 0:02:36they're probably around 12, 13,

0:02:36 > 0:02:38like going into the first and second years of high school.

0:02:38 > 0:02:40I don't really watch it,

0:02:40 > 0:02:45but my friends tell me some of it is really disturbing and they might...

0:02:45 > 0:02:48Like, say if they wanted to try it out and...

0:02:48 > 0:02:50I don't think that'd be good.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53My mum can't even access the computer and if she knew how to

0:02:53 > 0:02:58and if she went on the sites which young people were looking at,

0:02:58 > 0:03:02she'd just be horrified. Cos it is, in my mind, it's disgusting.

0:03:06 > 0:03:08When it comes to sex and relationships,

0:03:08 > 0:03:11I'm pretty open minded. And although I don't use porn myself,

0:03:11 > 0:03:15I know a lot of adults who do and I don't have a problem with that.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19But like most people, I've seen all the scare stories

0:03:19 > 0:03:21about how much young kids now watch it too.

0:03:21 > 0:03:23So I want to know if that's true

0:03:23 > 0:03:27and if we really do have a generation growing up watching porn.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31I remember I was 15 the first time

0:03:31 > 0:03:34I ever came across proper pornography, because it was

0:03:34 > 0:03:38at a time really before the internet was as huge as it is.

0:03:38 > 0:03:40I was at a friend's house and they were watching it,

0:03:40 > 0:03:44and I had a little look and I'm not going to get too graphic,

0:03:44 > 0:03:50but the things that I saw done with a cucumber and a woman

0:03:50 > 0:03:54genuinely made me not eat a salad for 12 years.

0:03:55 > 0:03:57That was in 2002 and, to be honest,

0:03:57 > 0:03:59I haven't really seen much porn since.

0:03:59 > 0:04:01But today's 15-year-olds have grown up in

0:04:01 > 0:04:04an age of smartphones and tablets,

0:04:04 > 0:04:07and it's reckoned that a quarter of 9 to 16-year-olds

0:04:07 > 0:04:10will have seen porn in the last 12 months.

0:04:10 > 0:04:12So what exactly is pornography?

0:04:14 > 0:04:16Legally, it's defined as an image that's

0:04:16 > 0:04:19"assumed to have been produced solely or principally

0:04:19 > 0:04:21"for the purpose of sexual arousal"

0:04:23 > 0:04:27I've genuinely never searched for porn before, but I'm now so curious

0:04:27 > 0:04:31to see what it is that young people are seeing out there

0:04:31 > 0:04:34and, more so, how easy it is to actually access.

0:04:34 > 0:04:36So OK, I'm just going to type in the word porn...

0:04:36 > 0:04:39I know this seems really basic, but I'm just going to type in

0:04:39 > 0:04:42the word porn into a search engine and just see what happens.

0:04:42 > 0:04:45OK...porn.

0:04:45 > 0:04:52There are 436 million results in 28 seconds,

0:04:52 > 0:04:57so just an abundance of free porn sites have come up.

0:04:57 > 0:04:58So I'll click on the first one.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03OK, I haven't even had to prove my age yet

0:05:03 > 0:05:06and some of the most explicit images I have...

0:05:06 > 0:05:09EVER seen are on this website.

0:05:09 > 0:05:13There's a lot of use of the words "teen slut".

0:05:16 > 0:05:17It's just...

0:05:19 > 0:05:22- It's lot of really... - SHE SIGHS

0:05:22 > 0:05:24..sort of distressing images of women

0:05:24 > 0:05:26looking like they're in quite a lot of pain.

0:05:26 > 0:05:30Just performing these unbelievably explicit sex acts.

0:05:30 > 0:05:32They all look really young.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35I'm not even a parent yet and I'm already terrified

0:05:35 > 0:05:38of the idea of having children knowing what's out there.

0:05:38 > 0:05:40I completely get why people would be concerned

0:05:40 > 0:05:44about their children going on the internet. This is unbelievable!

0:05:48 > 0:05:50'But easy access to porn is

0:05:50 > 0:05:53'something that ordinary families have to deal with every day.'

0:05:53 > 0:05:57- Hi.- Hi.- I'm Jameela.- Nice to meet you.- Nice to meet you.- Do come in.

0:06:00 > 0:06:02Alison and her husband James have two sons -

0:06:02 > 0:06:06Cameron, aged 10, and 18-year-old Brandon.

0:06:06 > 0:06:09It's only an eight-year age gap, but in terms of access to porn,

0:06:09 > 0:06:13these boys might as well come from different worlds.

0:06:13 > 0:06:14When Brandon was ten,

0:06:14 > 0:06:16he'd have been playing on a little games console. No wi-fi,

0:06:16 > 0:06:20no internet. I don't even think we had a computer when Brandon was 10.

0:06:20 > 0:06:22Certainly no smartphones.

0:06:22 > 0:06:25So there wasn't... We were still doing the thing of

0:06:25 > 0:06:28"Don't walk backwards up the slide, cos you'll bump yourself."

0:06:28 > 0:06:30How young do you think it is

0:06:30 > 0:06:33that young people can start watching pornography or do start

0:06:33 > 0:06:36coming across at least pornography, even if it's accidental?

0:06:37 > 0:06:39I would've said about 8, 10.

0:06:39 > 0:06:44We actually had an incident here where Cameron was upstairs

0:06:44 > 0:06:47and we only found out by chance, because of the phone bill.

0:06:47 > 0:06:49And one of his friends had gone upstairs

0:06:49 > 0:06:50and put the porn channel on.

0:06:52 > 0:06:54'I'm intrigued by this revelation,

0:06:54 > 0:06:58'so I decide to have a little chat with ten-year-old Cameron.'

0:06:58 > 0:07:03My friend came over to my house one time, we put on my TV,

0:07:03 > 0:07:06and he said, "Put this porn channel on."

0:07:06 > 0:07:10And he rang the porn channel up and it cost money.

0:07:10 > 0:07:13- How old were you when this happened? - Er, eight.

0:07:13 > 0:07:18You were eight?! And your friend knew about the porn channel,

0:07:18 > 0:07:21- what it was and how to get onto it?- Yeah.

0:07:21 > 0:07:25So after your friend had shown you the pornography,

0:07:25 > 0:07:28how did it come about, like how where you able

0:07:28 > 0:07:32- to talk about it? What happened next?- Um...

0:07:32 > 0:07:35I went downstairs feeling confused.

0:07:35 > 0:07:39- I didn't tell my mum, but... - How come?- Um...

0:07:39 > 0:07:42I didn't feel safe about it, I didn't know what it was,

0:07:42 > 0:07:46so I didn't feel right to tell her about it.

0:07:46 > 0:07:49But then, a phone bill came in

0:07:49 > 0:07:52and my mum started questioning me about it.

0:07:52 > 0:07:56- So what did your mum do? How did she react?- She was furious.

0:07:57 > 0:07:5918-year-old Brandon is concerned

0:07:59 > 0:08:02about what else his little brother might be exposed to.

0:08:02 > 0:08:04I do worry about him. I do worry about the stuff out there

0:08:04 > 0:08:07that he hasn't seen, because of the explicit material out there.

0:08:07 > 0:08:11So it's just a worry of if he's going to see it,

0:08:11 > 0:08:15when he's going to see it, cos, one day, he most likely will

0:08:15 > 0:08:16and how it's going to affect him.

0:08:16 > 0:08:19I just hope that it doesn't affect him too much.

0:08:25 > 0:08:27So is it inevitable that online porn

0:08:27 > 0:08:29will become part of every teenager's life?

0:08:29 > 0:08:34To find out, I need to hear from kids themselves.

0:08:34 > 0:08:36And first, I've come to one of the very few schools

0:08:36 > 0:08:39where pornography is openly discussed.

0:08:39 > 0:08:42This workshop is run by Rape Crisis South London.

0:08:43 > 0:08:45- Who watches porn?- Me.- Me.

0:08:45 > 0:08:48- I'm not going to lie, innit? Yeah.- All of us do.

0:08:48 > 0:08:50We'd be lying if we told you we didn't.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52Every single teenage guy watches porn.

0:08:52 > 0:08:56- You think every single guy watches porn?- Yeah, definitely.- True story.

0:08:56 > 0:08:59There's not a guy out there who doesn't watch porn?

0:08:59 > 0:09:02- I'd be surprised. - You'd be surprised? OK.

0:09:02 > 0:09:06'I'm sitting in on sessions with boys and girls and, like me,

0:09:06 > 0:09:10'they're shocked to learn that the porn industry is worth billions!'

0:09:10 > 0:09:134 billion by the end of 2012

0:09:13 > 0:09:17was spent on pornography via mobile phones.

0:09:17 > 0:09:19When young people watch pornography,

0:09:19 > 0:09:23do you think young people feel pressured?

0:09:23 > 0:09:25Well, the girls watching it might think, like,

0:09:25 > 0:09:28they need to act like that, and the same for the boys.

0:09:28 > 0:09:31- How do girls act in porn? - Like they're liking it.

0:09:31 > 0:09:32Yeah, they put it on a little bit, I think.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35- GIRL: A little bit?! - Quite a lot, I think.

0:09:35 > 0:09:37Do you think it means that young people sometimes

0:09:37 > 0:09:39have different expectations of what sex will be like?

0:09:39 > 0:09:41Yeah, because I think young people will see it

0:09:41 > 0:09:43and think they can treat a woman in that way

0:09:43 > 0:09:45and it's not right to treat a woman in that way.

0:09:45 > 0:09:48Like, with porn videos, they last bear long, innit, yeah?

0:09:48 > 0:09:49But if you're having sex for the first time,

0:09:49 > 0:09:52you're not going to last, like, 25 minutes, are you?

0:09:52 > 0:09:55- No.- More like 10... - Maybe.- Seconds.

0:09:55 > 0:09:58LAUGHTER

0:09:58 > 0:10:02And do you, young ladies, feel like there is a pressure among girls

0:10:02 > 0:10:05to maybe behave like the porn starlets?

0:10:05 > 0:10:08If we started, like, behaving like a porn star,

0:10:08 > 0:10:10we'd get called slut.

0:10:10 > 0:10:12But if the boys do it...

0:10:12 > 0:10:14GIGGLING

0:10:14 > 0:10:15- It's true!- Yeah, it is true.

0:10:15 > 0:10:18When girls go around having sex with boys,

0:10:18 > 0:10:21they're called a slag, but when boys do it...

0:10:21 > 0:10:24- It's like an achievement, yeah. - An achievement. They'll be like...

0:10:24 > 0:10:26- It's just boys! - It's like, "Good on you, mate,"

0:10:26 > 0:10:28but with a girl, it's not good.

0:10:28 > 0:10:30Do you think that that promotes young people

0:10:30 > 0:10:32- using that language about women? - Yeah, it does.

0:10:32 > 0:10:34- Do you agree with it? - It depends what they've done.

0:10:34 > 0:10:38Like, obviously, if you hear about a girl sleeping with loads of boys,

0:10:38 > 0:10:40- you're not going to be attracted to her, are you?- Mmm.

0:10:40 > 0:10:43I think some boys, the way they speak about girls,

0:10:43 > 0:10:45sometimes, they forget that, like, when they're older,

0:10:45 > 0:10:49would they want boys to speak about their daughter like that?

0:10:49 > 0:10:51That's true. I've started to think about that recently as well.

0:10:51 > 0:10:54Would I like it if another boy was talking about my sister like that

0:10:54 > 0:10:57or doing things with my sister?

0:10:57 > 0:10:59'I'm amazed that these 15 and 16-year-olds

0:10:59 > 0:11:02'seem to know so much about the porn that's out there,

0:11:02 > 0:11:06'and that they understand the impact that it's having on them.'

0:11:07 > 0:11:11'But it's no surprise to people like sex educator Lynnette Smith,

0:11:11 > 0:11:13'who work with teenagers every day.'

0:11:13 > 0:11:17I've been involved in sex education for about 20 years now

0:11:17 > 0:11:21and it was literally one summer, one summer we saw a change,

0:11:21 > 0:11:24and that was summer 2002. Now most of the classes,

0:11:24 > 0:11:28- at that time, we worked just in senior schools...- Yeah.

0:11:28 > 0:11:33..in year nines and year tens, which is 14 and 15-year-olds,

0:11:33 > 0:11:36and up until that, in a class of 30, we would maybe have

0:11:36 > 0:11:40three lads out of the 15 in the class that had accessed pornography,

0:11:40 > 0:11:44and that would have been through Fiesta magazines,

0:11:44 > 0:11:47- that type of...- Yeah, yeah, top shelf.- Yeah, that's the thing.

0:11:47 > 0:11:49And then, after that summer,

0:11:49 > 0:11:54when everybody seemed to get the internet piped into their homes,

0:11:54 > 0:11:57in the September, the October, we found that it was only

0:11:57 > 0:12:02three lads out of 15 that HADN'T actually accessed pornography.

0:12:02 > 0:12:04SHE CLICKS HER FINGERS It was literally that quick.

0:12:05 > 0:12:09And now, one in three 9-16 year olds in the UK

0:12:09 > 0:12:13has access to the internet via their mobile phone. So the days

0:12:13 > 0:12:17when porn had an age limit that could be enforced are long gone.

0:12:17 > 0:12:21The Government says it's clamping down on easy access to porn,

0:12:21 > 0:12:22encouraging internet providers

0:12:22 > 0:12:26to introduce new filters only adults can lift.

0:12:26 > 0:12:29But some say it's too late and that countless children

0:12:29 > 0:12:32have already been exposed to shocking images

0:12:32 > 0:12:35at an age when I was still playing with dolls.

0:12:35 > 0:12:37So how do we know for sure

0:12:37 > 0:12:40just how much online porn teenagers are seeing?

0:12:40 > 0:12:42And what effect does that have on them?

0:12:46 > 0:12:47To find out, we've carried out

0:12:47 > 0:12:51the biggest survey of its kind ever done in the UK.

0:12:52 > 0:12:57Over 1,000 people aged between 16 and 21 took part,

0:12:57 > 0:13:00answering questions on everything to do with porn.

0:13:00 > 0:13:02How old they were when they first saw it.

0:13:02 > 0:13:05How often they watch it now.

0:13:05 > 0:13:09And how they think it affects what men and women expect from sex.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12Their answers were sent anonymously to a market research company.

0:13:15 > 0:13:17And then, we got two of the country's leading experts

0:13:17 > 0:13:22on pornography and sexualisation to help us analyse the results.

0:13:22 > 0:13:25What was so exciting about this was it was an opportunity to really go

0:13:25 > 0:13:26to a large number of young people

0:13:26 > 0:13:29in the UK, which is where there hasn't been

0:13:29 > 0:13:32a lot of research in the past and really get them to tell us

0:13:32 > 0:13:34what they thought, what they felt.

0:13:34 > 0:13:37The answers that young people gave us in the survey were

0:13:37 > 0:13:40so interesting, so inspiring, so thoughtful.

0:13:40 > 0:13:43This is the biggest survey in the UK that has been done

0:13:43 > 0:13:47of young people's experiences and really gives them a chance

0:13:47 > 0:13:50to talk about what they think about pornography and they did.

0:13:50 > 0:13:53They had really interesting, thoughtful things to say.

0:13:55 > 0:13:59At the same time, I also talked to dozens of teenagers aged 14 and up

0:13:59 > 0:14:04from all over the UK, so we could get the most accurate picture yet

0:14:04 > 0:14:07of the truth about young people and porn.

0:14:07 > 0:14:10It boosts confidence of men a lot more, and it makes them think,

0:14:10 > 0:14:15"Well," you know, "it looks quite easy, you know, I could do that."

0:14:15 > 0:14:19My brother, he's 13 and I wouldn't like the idea of him at all,

0:14:19 > 0:14:22like, looking at porn and sexual things like that,

0:14:22 > 0:14:25because I don't think it's sort of real life.

0:14:25 > 0:14:30It's all like an act and it's not really sort of sex.

0:14:30 > 0:14:35Most young boys, they, like, before they actually go to have sex,

0:14:35 > 0:14:38they do, like, watch porn to get a bit of experience

0:14:38 > 0:14:40and knowledge in the whole game.

0:14:43 > 0:14:46First in our survey, we asked people to tell us how old they were

0:14:46 > 0:14:50when they first saw porn online, including downloads.

0:14:55 > 0:14:57The average age for first time porn viewing

0:14:57 > 0:14:59turned out to be 14 years old.

0:14:59 > 0:15:02But that doesn't give the whole picture.

0:15:02 > 0:15:05Just over 60% of those who answered the question

0:15:05 > 0:15:07told us they were 14 years old or younger

0:15:07 > 0:15:10the first time they saw pornography online.

0:15:10 > 0:15:14Nearly a quarter were 12 or younger.

0:15:14 > 0:15:18And 7% said they were 10 years old or younger.

0:15:18 > 0:15:21Having seen how easily accessible it is,

0:15:21 > 0:15:27I shouldn't be surprised by the fact that 7% of our respondents

0:15:27 > 0:15:30were 10 or younger when they first came across porn,

0:15:30 > 0:15:33but I am. I'm still horrified.

0:15:33 > 0:15:36As a grown woman, I'm horrified seeing these images.

0:15:36 > 0:15:38I can't imagine seeing that through the eyes of a child.

0:15:46 > 0:15:49Our survey also asked young people why they look for porn.

0:15:49 > 0:15:52Perhaps not surprisingly, the most common reason given

0:15:52 > 0:15:55was that men and women use it for sexual stimulation

0:15:55 > 0:15:57or as an aid to masturbation.

0:15:58 > 0:16:02However, around 10% of the 1,000 young people

0:16:02 > 0:16:04said that, while men look at porn for sexual pleasure,

0:16:04 > 0:16:08young women do so in order to learn about sex.

0:16:08 > 0:16:13As one young woman put it, "women for education, men for arousal".

0:16:13 > 0:16:17And that worries me. Because if they're turning to porn to learn,

0:16:17 > 0:16:19how much of what they're seeing

0:16:19 > 0:16:22is a true reflection of what sex is really like?

0:16:24 > 0:16:26I'm going to meet a woman who should know.

0:16:26 > 0:16:30She describes herself as Britain's highest paid porn star.

0:16:30 > 0:16:33- Hello.- Hi. How are you? - I'm good, thank you.

0:16:33 > 0:16:36- I'm Jameela.- Nice to meet you. - How's things?- Good, thank you.

0:16:39 > 0:16:41Gemma Massey appeared in more than 20 porn films

0:16:41 > 0:16:45over a two year period, but she's now left the industry.

0:16:47 > 0:16:50- THEY LAUGH - Oh, my God!

0:16:50 > 0:16:53- Your shoes have a bedroom!- I know!

0:16:53 > 0:16:56- This is amazing!- A whole bedroom just for my clothes and shoes.

0:16:56 > 0:16:59- That's a weapon! That's not at shoe! - LAUGHTER

0:16:59 > 0:17:03'Although Gemma stopped working in porn two years ago,

0:17:03 > 0:17:06- 'her films are on the web for ever.' - MOANING ON VIDEO

0:17:06 > 0:17:08- Would you ever go back into porn?- No.

0:17:08 > 0:17:11- Why?- Cos no-one would else would pay me that sort of money to do it

0:17:11 > 0:17:15and I would never do it for the standard going rate.

0:17:15 > 0:17:18- What is the standard going rate? - 300 quid.

0:17:18 > 0:17:21- For what, what would you do for 300 quid?- For a scene.

0:17:21 > 0:17:23- How long does a scene take?- Er...

0:17:23 > 0:17:26Some companies, 12 hour days. Some girls may need money and think,

0:17:26 > 0:17:28"I'll do anal, cos I'll get a bit more,"

0:17:28 > 0:17:30and they're not doing it cos they want to do it,

0:17:30 > 0:17:34they're doing it cos they need to do it, cos they need money or whatever.

0:17:34 > 0:17:36Then, that's when I'd be like, "No."

0:17:36 > 0:17:39I don't want to end up how some of the girls have ended up.

0:17:39 > 0:17:44- What have they ended up like? - Mad in the head.- In what way?

0:17:44 > 0:17:46You know, some might have to take drugs to then do the job,

0:17:46 > 0:17:48which, again, I would never want to do that.

0:17:48 > 0:17:52- So they can be, like, in another place?- Yeah.

0:17:52 > 0:17:56- What I want to know is do you think that porn reflects real sex?- No.

0:17:56 > 0:18:00- Why?- And I think people need to understand that it's not real.

0:18:00 > 0:18:03It's...it's not how I would have sex at home at all.

0:18:03 > 0:18:06'Although Gemma wants people to understand that porn isn't real,

0:18:06 > 0:18:09'I'm not sure she's faced up to the reality

0:18:09 > 0:18:12'of how young a lot of her audience is.'

0:18:12 > 0:18:15How do you feel about the fact that 11-year-olds now

0:18:15 > 0:18:19- are watching your films? - I know, that is quite disturbing

0:18:19 > 0:18:22that it's getting younger and younger. Um...

0:18:22 > 0:18:25They can't really stop it, can they?

0:18:25 > 0:18:27What do your family think about the porn?

0:18:27 > 0:18:34My mum and dad wasn't too happy about it when I told them,

0:18:34 > 0:18:36like most parents, I suppose.

0:18:36 > 0:18:40What parent would want to see their daughter doing porn?

0:18:40 > 0:18:43It's kind of one of those ones. It's not the most normal...

0:18:43 > 0:18:47- So you do recognise it's...- Oh, yeah, I know that it's not normal.

0:18:47 > 0:18:51That's why I want to get out of it and do something different, because,

0:18:51 > 0:18:53if I was to stay in that industry and carry on,

0:18:53 > 0:18:56mentally it's just going to mess you up in the head,

0:18:56 > 0:18:59doing that all the time. You can't do porn for ever.

0:19:01 > 0:19:05'That wasn't what I expected. I've never met a porn star.'

0:19:05 > 0:19:06So I thought I was going to come in here

0:19:06 > 0:19:10and she was going to be a dominatrix and be really fierce and sassy,

0:19:10 > 0:19:13'the way that she's portrayed in films and online.

0:19:13 > 0:19:16'She was nothing like that. She's really sweet.'

0:19:16 > 0:19:19There's some pictures of when I was younger, going from four boob jobs.

0:19:19 > 0:19:23'There's something about her that's almost just not completely there.

0:19:23 > 0:19:25'She's lovely, she's adorable,'

0:19:25 > 0:19:29but she's just almost like in a fantasy world of thinking it's OK

0:19:29 > 0:19:32and that's the same fantasy I feel kids have when they're watching it.

0:19:36 > 0:19:39When we talk about young people seeing porn online,

0:19:39 > 0:19:41it's often assumed they're looking for it.

0:19:41 > 0:19:45But our nationwide survey showed this isn't always the case.

0:19:47 > 0:19:51Of the hundreds of young people who took part, only 22%

0:19:51 > 0:19:55were looking for it on purpose the first time they saw porn online.

0:19:55 > 0:19:59The rest saw it accidentally or were shown it by someone else.

0:19:59 > 0:20:01And in their day-to-day lives,

0:20:01 > 0:20:05young people just continue to be bombarded with pornographic images.

0:20:05 > 0:20:08Nearly a quarter said that they see porn online

0:20:08 > 0:20:11when they don't expect to at least once a week.

0:20:11 > 0:20:13Some of the most commonly reported ways were

0:20:13 > 0:20:16when they're searching for something else online.

0:20:16 > 0:20:18Someone said that, "I click on a game or website

0:20:18 > 0:20:21"which says it's something else, but then it's porn,"

0:20:21 > 0:20:22so there's no escaping it.

0:20:24 > 0:20:27'And these days, you don't even have to visit an explicit site

0:20:27 > 0:20:29'to see pornographic images.'

0:20:29 > 0:20:32We've got six new entries and four re-entries, including tracks

0:20:32 > 0:20:36from Pharrell Williams, James Arthur and Mariah Carey.

0:20:36 > 0:20:39'Sexual images are everywhere - in adverts, magazines,

0:20:39 > 0:20:41'and, more than ever, in music videos.'

0:20:41 > 0:20:47And this at number 26 is Miley Cyrus and that big old Wrecking Ball.

0:20:47 > 0:20:51# I came in like a wrecking ball... #

0:20:51 > 0:20:54Music stars, like Miley Cyrus, Kanye West,

0:20:54 > 0:20:56Rihanna and Robin Thicke,

0:20:56 > 0:21:00are often singled out for criticism, accused of using pornographic images

0:21:00 > 0:21:03and editing techniques in their videos.

0:21:03 > 0:21:05But it's grime artist Skepta

0:21:05 > 0:21:11who's taken the sexual imagery in music videos to a whole new level.

0:21:11 > 0:21:15# We were chilling then we had sex... #

0:21:15 > 0:21:17The video for his single All Over the House

0:21:17 > 0:21:21features him singing as two porn actors have explicit sex.

0:21:21 > 0:21:24This is a hardcore porn film labelled as a music video.

0:21:25 > 0:21:28'In fact, with close ups of genitals,

0:21:28 > 0:21:32'the images are SO explicit, we can't even show them.'

0:21:32 > 0:21:37So talk me through the decision to use a porno as a music video.

0:21:37 > 0:21:40I always think to try and do something what nobody else has done.

0:21:40 > 0:21:43I didn't think too much about it or how big it would be or whatever.

0:21:43 > 0:21:46I just did it. I never tweeted that video once. I never spoke about it.

0:21:46 > 0:21:49- I never did anything... - Yeah, but it's the internet.

0:21:49 > 0:21:51Right, so it found its way back to me.

0:21:51 > 0:21:55I just didn't want to promote it. I know that I have young fans...

0:21:55 > 0:21:59- Mm-hm.- ..that follow me on Twitter, so for me to put that on there,

0:21:59 > 0:22:02it is a stupid thing for me to do, so I kind of left it for people to find.

0:22:02 > 0:22:05- So if people find it... - But it's so easy to find.

0:22:05 > 0:22:08Literally, you Google it, if I even write in "Skepta",

0:22:08 > 0:22:11the first thing that comes up is All Over The House, then they say

0:22:11 > 0:22:13you have to be 18-plus to watch it, but I mean, I could be five

0:22:13 > 0:22:16and could've gotten through to that. It just comes up immediately.

0:22:16 > 0:22:20OK, you found it, but you still clicked it.

0:22:20 > 0:22:22Do you know what I mean? That's what it was for me.

0:22:22 > 0:22:27- Now you know how many kids have seen it...- Yeah.- ..how do you feel?

0:22:27 > 0:22:29I don't feel any different. I definitely wouldn't change it.

0:22:29 > 0:22:32I'd do it again if I could go back in time to do it.

0:22:32 > 0:22:35I didn't put that much thought into it when I did it in the first place

0:22:35 > 0:22:38and I do a lot of stuff in life, just wanting to do something different.

0:22:38 > 0:22:39# She came closer

0:22:39 > 0:22:41# I popped up like bread in a toaster... #

0:22:41 > 0:22:44'Skepta was happy to appear in the video

0:22:44 > 0:22:46'and for it to show real sex, but I'm curious

0:22:46 > 0:22:50'as to why he wasn't prepared to be filmed having sex himself.'

0:22:50 > 0:22:53I think there's a quite lot of reasons. That's probably

0:22:53 > 0:22:56- why I can't pinpoint what it is. - Well, I'd love some of them.

0:22:56 > 0:22:58One is because I'm me. That is definitely one.

0:22:58 > 0:23:00- It's because of who I am. - What about you?- Um...

0:23:00 > 0:23:04- Like my mum would be very upset if I did it.- Why?- Because...

0:23:04 > 0:23:07I know my mum, innit? So I know she wouldn't like me to do that.

0:23:07 > 0:23:08A quick search on the internet

0:23:08 > 0:23:12shows just how shocked some young fans were by Skepta's video.

0:23:12 > 0:23:15LOUD GASPS

0:23:17 > 0:23:19Oh, my God!

0:23:19 > 0:23:22'This girl was filmed on webcam as she watched it for the first time.'

0:23:24 > 0:23:25Eugh!

0:23:25 > 0:23:27# She knows I've got this Open it up like a locksmith... #

0:23:27 > 0:23:29What the hell is wrong with this man?!

0:23:29 > 0:23:32First of all, what I would say, yeah, straightaway,

0:23:32 > 0:23:35this girl's an attention seeker, definitely.

0:23:35 > 0:23:37So are you! Look at your porno video.

0:23:37 > 0:23:41# All over the house All over the house... #

0:23:41 > 0:23:45'I met up with Naomi, the girl who found Skepta's video so shocking.'

0:23:45 > 0:23:47Eugh! How can you be doing that?!

0:23:47 > 0:23:49SHE LAUGHS

0:23:49 > 0:23:51'She told me her friend had sent her the link to the video

0:23:51 > 0:23:54'without telling her it had explicit sex in it.

0:23:54 > 0:23:57'Naomi posted her reaction online.'

0:23:59 > 0:24:02Do you remember that reaction? Do you want to tell me a bit about it?

0:24:02 > 0:24:05Yeah, that reaction was genuine. I was like, "What the actual hell?"

0:24:05 > 0:24:09Like I expected a music video, and I got a porno and, like,

0:24:09 > 0:24:12if I'd knew it was going to be a porno, I'd have put headphones in,

0:24:12 > 0:24:15so that it wouldn't be out loud for my mum to hear.

0:24:15 > 0:24:17- It was just shocking. - When I showed the video to Skepta,

0:24:17 > 0:24:19he felt like you were just attention seeking.

0:24:19 > 0:24:22Were you just attention seeking or was that genuine?

0:24:22 > 0:24:24I was shocked. I was too shocked to hold it all in.

0:24:24 > 0:24:27My mouth... The way it was open the majority of the video,

0:24:27 > 0:24:30it was literally like, "Oh, my God, this is nasty!"

0:24:30 > 0:24:32What he was trying to do was

0:24:32 > 0:24:35almost as if he knew controversy would come with it.

0:24:35 > 0:24:39Therefore, whether it's good or bad, you're going to get attention.

0:24:39 > 0:24:40# She knows I've got this

0:24:40 > 0:24:42# I'm-a open it up like a locksmith... #

0:24:42 > 0:24:44But despite such hostile reactions,

0:24:44 > 0:24:48Skepta says he still doesn't regret his porn music video.

0:24:48 > 0:24:49He's says it's up to parents

0:24:49 > 0:24:52to educate their kids about the internet.

0:24:52 > 0:24:55These parents need to take time out,

0:24:55 > 0:24:58get off the couch and leave the Kardashians and the X-Factors alone

0:24:58 > 0:25:00and go and chill with your child.

0:25:00 > 0:25:04Why do children of today connect more with me than their own parents?

0:25:04 > 0:25:07You shouldn't watch my video or you shouldn't watch a video

0:25:07 > 0:25:10and not feel comfortable to go back to your dad or your mum

0:25:10 > 0:25:12and say, "What's going on here?"

0:25:12 > 0:25:14# Let me show you something you won't forget

0:25:14 > 0:25:16# Just hold me around my neck... #

0:25:16 > 0:25:20That was really intense, because I know him

0:25:20 > 0:25:24and he's someone that I respect and really like and it was a video

0:25:24 > 0:25:26that was very poignant to me when it first came out,

0:25:26 > 0:25:29because I felt uncomfortable about its existence,

0:25:29 > 0:25:32knowing the audience that were going to watch it.

0:25:32 > 0:25:36Even though I believe he didn't have any intention for kids to see that,

0:25:36 > 0:25:39and he didn't think it would become as viral as it did,

0:25:39 > 0:25:42you have to think, with our platform and our responsibility,

0:25:42 > 0:25:44you have to think, you have to be responsible.

0:25:47 > 0:25:49In our survey, we wanted to find out more

0:25:49 > 0:25:52about the impact that online pornography has on teenagers.

0:25:52 > 0:25:55And we discovered there's a massive difference

0:25:55 > 0:25:58in the views and experiences of young men and young women.

0:25:58 > 0:26:01There are clear gender differences in how young people

0:26:01 > 0:26:04first see pornography, how they feel when they first see it,

0:26:04 > 0:26:06why they look for it, how often they look for it,

0:26:06 > 0:26:08and how it affects what they expect from sex.

0:26:10 > 0:26:14In our survey, 30% of the boys said the first time they saw porn,

0:26:14 > 0:26:20they'd looked for it on purpose, compared to just 12% of girls.

0:26:20 > 0:26:21And nearly 20% of girls told us

0:26:21 > 0:26:28they have never seen porn online, compared to only 4% of boys.

0:26:28 > 0:26:31And those differences between girls and boys persist.

0:26:31 > 0:26:34So a quarter of young men say they go looking for porn all the time,

0:26:34 > 0:26:36so let's say every couple of days.

0:26:36 > 0:26:39A quarter of young men say that they look for porn some of the time,

0:26:39 > 0:26:41so at least once a week,

0:26:41 > 0:26:45and 50% of women say they never go looking for online pornography.

0:26:52 > 0:26:54It seems one reason for that

0:26:54 > 0:26:58could be that young women don't like what they see in porn.

0:26:58 > 0:27:02In our survey, 229 of our 1,000 young people

0:27:02 > 0:27:05told us there is nothing good about porn.

0:27:05 > 0:27:07Almost three quarters of them were women.

0:27:12 > 0:27:14'At the Salmon Centre in South London,

0:27:14 > 0:27:17'they provide a space for teenagers to meet,

0:27:17 > 0:27:20'let off steam and get support. And as I discover,

0:27:20 > 0:27:25'some of the older boys have strong views about porn.'

0:27:25 > 0:27:27Why do you think young people look at porn?

0:27:27 > 0:27:31- Develop their understanding of sex. - So you think they learn about it?

0:27:31 > 0:27:34- Mm-hm.- Some schools, you have sex education, innit?

0:27:34 > 0:27:37So it's just like verbally explaining it to you,

0:27:37 > 0:27:41whereas, if you were to watch porn, you can see what's actually going on.

0:27:41 > 0:27:44Sometimes, it helps. It's like theory and practical.

0:27:44 > 0:27:47And where do you guys find porn? Where do people...?

0:27:47 > 0:27:50- Where do young people find porn? - Internet or like...

0:27:50 > 0:27:54You know they have them vine videos and, you know, they have girls...

0:27:54 > 0:27:57- You know?- Doing what?- Like, you know, doing sexual things, innit?

0:27:57 > 0:27:59And people just click on it.

0:27:59 > 0:28:03When you watch one link, it leads to another link and it just carries on.

0:28:03 > 0:28:06Do you think girls and boys see porn differently?

0:28:06 > 0:28:10- I think that it affects boys more. - In what way?

0:28:10 > 0:28:14- In a sexual way.- It makes you more eager to have sex.- Yeah.

0:28:14 > 0:28:18- When you watch porn, you want sex straight away.- Trust me.- Honest.

0:28:18 > 0:28:21Why do you think girls watch pornography?

0:28:21 > 0:28:24Do you think it's the same reason as why boys do?

0:28:24 > 0:28:27- It's hard to see girls watching porn, man.- How come?

0:28:27 > 0:28:32You'd normally, stereotypically, you'd associate porn with boys,

0:28:32 > 0:28:33like...

0:28:33 > 0:28:37I've watched porn with a girl and it just made it awkward.

0:28:37 > 0:28:40She didn't want to talk about it or nothing.

0:28:40 > 0:28:41- Really?- Yeah.

0:28:41 > 0:28:44- And do you think it's good for girls to watch porn or not good?- No.

0:28:44 > 0:28:46Why do you not think it's good for girls?

0:28:46 > 0:28:50- Most girls find it disgusting.- It's unattractive.- They're like, "Eugh!"

0:28:53 > 0:28:56Schools in the UK don't have to cover issues like pornography

0:28:56 > 0:28:59in sex and relationships classes, so most don't do so.

0:29:02 > 0:29:05Which makes this workshop for 14 and 15-year-old girls

0:29:05 > 0:29:09at a school in Cardiff extremely unusual.

0:29:09 > 0:29:11I'm going to say the word "pornography" to you

0:29:11 > 0:29:13and I want you to think about what comes to mind.

0:29:13 > 0:29:15You can discuss it between yourselves,

0:29:15 > 0:29:18but just write something down on the paper.

0:29:18 > 0:29:20So there's pens there and paper.

0:29:20 > 0:29:24So what comes to mind when you hear the word "pornography"?

0:29:24 > 0:29:27All done? Would you like to start?

0:29:27 > 0:29:30- Um...sex was the first one that came to mind.- OK.

0:29:30 > 0:29:32- Sex.- Sex?- Sex.- Sex?

0:29:32 > 0:29:35- Sexual video.- Sexual videos. OK, well, that...

0:29:35 > 0:29:38'It's interesting that, like the young men in South London,

0:29:38 > 0:29:41'these girls think that porn is for boys.'

0:29:41 > 0:29:44So I'll read out a statement. Go with your own gut reaction, OK?

0:29:44 > 0:29:48"All young people are interested in pornography."

0:29:48 > 0:29:50So what do you think there?

0:29:50 > 0:29:53I don't want to be sexist, but it's sort of mostly boys.

0:29:53 > 0:29:57- Mostly boys? Not all young people, but maybe mostly boys?- Yeah.- OK.

0:29:57 > 0:29:59And how do young people come across...

0:29:59 > 0:30:01different types of pornography, generally?

0:30:01 > 0:30:06When you're 11-12, you have a page on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram,

0:30:06 > 0:30:10and, um, the little advertisements will come up on the side

0:30:10 > 0:30:13without you necessarily wanting to look at porn

0:30:13 > 0:30:17and they'll have an advert and, if you click on the advert,

0:30:17 > 0:30:20it'll take you straight to a pornography website.

0:30:20 > 0:30:23Is it quite explicit, what you see?

0:30:23 > 0:30:27It's sort of half-naked men and half-naked women.

0:30:27 > 0:30:30How do you think young women like yourself

0:30:30 > 0:30:34feel when they're suddenly, like, confronted with that image?

0:30:34 > 0:30:36It sort of makes you feel a bit embarrassed,

0:30:36 > 0:30:40because I don't want to look at stuff like that

0:30:40 > 0:30:44and, um, like, to other people, sort of...

0:30:44 > 0:30:47it'd be as if they have to click on it, because it's come up

0:30:47 > 0:30:50on their Facebook and stuff, so they want to check out what it is.

0:30:50 > 0:30:54But to me, it makes me feel a bit awkward, cos I don't really want to.

0:30:57 > 0:31:00But if many young people are having to deal with sexual images

0:31:00 > 0:31:02earlier than they ever did in the past,

0:31:02 > 0:31:05what exactly might be the consequences of that?

0:31:05 > 0:31:08One of the most worrying results from our survey

0:31:08 > 0:31:10was when we asked the question

0:31:10 > 0:31:14"Do you think pornography affects what young people expect from sex?"

0:31:15 > 0:31:19Nearly 75% said young men's expectations of sex

0:31:19 > 0:31:23are affected by porn, while 53% said young women's

0:31:23 > 0:31:28expectations of sex are affected by porn. When we asked young people

0:31:28 > 0:31:31how porn affects what young men expect from sex,

0:31:31 > 0:31:35one of the top three most common responses was that boys

0:31:35 > 0:31:38expect girls' bodies to look like they do in pornography,

0:31:38 > 0:31:42with no pubic hair and with large breasts.

0:31:42 > 0:31:46An 18-year-old boy said they want skinny women with big boobs.

0:31:46 > 0:31:49A 16-year-old boy said that boys expect girls

0:31:49 > 0:31:52to have a perfect, shaved vagina like porn stars.

0:31:52 > 0:31:56I mean, that's quite a lot of pressure for young women.

0:31:56 > 0:32:00I often see reports in the media linking porn to a dramatic increase

0:32:00 > 0:32:03in the number of women asking for labiaplasty.

0:32:03 > 0:32:04That's a cosmetic procedure

0:32:04 > 0:32:07where the inner labia, or vaginal lips, are reduced.

0:32:09 > 0:32:13And what's worse, gynaecologists like Dr Gail Busby

0:32:13 > 0:32:17say more and more young girls are now requesting this procedure.

0:32:18 > 0:32:20She believes education is the key

0:32:20 > 0:32:22to stopping media images giving young people

0:32:22 > 0:32:26such limited views on what a woman's body is like.

0:32:28 > 0:32:31So we've invited two groups of teenage volunteers -

0:32:31 > 0:32:34one boys and one girls - to take part in a workshop.

0:32:36 > 0:32:38Dr Busby starts by correcting

0:32:38 > 0:32:41a common misunderstanding about female genitals.

0:32:41 > 0:32:45The vagina's actually the part inside that you can't see.

0:32:45 > 0:32:49The part on the outside that you can see is actually called the vulva.

0:32:54 > 0:32:57Dr Busby is going to use a sculpture

0:32:57 > 0:33:00called 57 Women from the Great Wall of Vagina series

0:33:00 > 0:33:04to show the wide range of normal vaginas or vulvas.

0:33:04 > 0:33:08The artist, Jamie McCartney, took plaster casts of real women.

0:33:08 > 0:33:10Although they look very different,

0:33:10 > 0:33:13they are all normal and none needs surgery.

0:33:16 > 0:33:20So these are all actual vulvas from actual women.

0:33:20 > 0:33:23- They're horrible!- They're horrible? - ALL: Yeah.

0:33:23 > 0:33:26- They're all different.- Yeah. - OK. What makes them horrible?

0:33:26 > 0:33:28- Some are like saggy and... - GIGGLING

0:33:30 > 0:33:34The one in the middle looks weird. That one there.

0:33:34 > 0:33:35- That one?- Yes.- OK.

0:33:35 > 0:33:39- That one looks dodgy there. - This one looks dodgy.

0:33:39 > 0:33:45- This one?- Yeah.- It's a bit bigger! - It's a bit larger? OK.- Yeah, yeah.

0:33:45 > 0:33:48'Although dozens of girls under 18 ask Dr Busby for labiaplasty,

0:33:48 > 0:33:50'because they think they're abnormal,

0:33:50 > 0:33:53'none of them have needed surgery.'

0:33:53 > 0:33:56- Is it really common?- Yeah, it's common and getting more common.

0:33:56 > 0:33:59It's definitely noticeable and getting younger and younger as well.

0:33:59 > 0:34:03Really? So, what's the youngest age you would have a girl worrying about

0:34:03 > 0:34:06the size and shape of her vagina and wanting to alter it?

0:34:06 > 0:34:09Um, the youngest, somewhere between 12 and 14.

0:34:09 > 0:34:16Is this the first time that you have seen images of adult women's vulvas?

0:34:16 > 0:34:18Unless it's been all over Facebook.

0:34:18 > 0:34:20SOME GIGGLING

0:34:20 > 0:34:22You don't really take much notice of what they look like.

0:34:22 > 0:34:26Unless it's seen, like on social networking sites, stuff like that.

0:34:26 > 0:34:29Sorry, do you guys see a lot of vaginas on social media?

0:34:29 > 0:34:33- It's not pictures, it's videos. - How do you see videos?

0:34:33 > 0:34:36- They just pop up!- They all scroll and people share them

0:34:36 > 0:34:38and put them on, like, Facebook and stuff.

0:34:38 > 0:34:42- So people your age share videos of their own vaginas?- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:34:42 > 0:34:47- Like a page...- There's a page on Facebook.- And they put them on.

0:34:47 > 0:34:49So what do those vaginas look like?

0:34:49 > 0:34:51They stick things up themselves, so you can't really see it.

0:34:53 > 0:34:57In my clinics, I see many, many girls your age who come along

0:34:57 > 0:35:01asking me to operate and remove bits of their vulvas.

0:35:01 > 0:35:05And do you think that would be a good idea in a 15, 16-year-old?

0:35:05 > 0:35:09- No.- No? Why do you not think it would be a good idea?

0:35:09 > 0:35:12- Because it could change by the time they grow up.- That is exactly it.

0:35:12 > 0:35:13If these are all our age, well,

0:35:13 > 0:35:15it's just you haven't gone through development yet,

0:35:15 > 0:35:18so it's just going to mess up your system more, to be honest.

0:35:18 > 0:35:21I couldn't agree with you more. They might change. They're still growing.

0:35:21 > 0:35:25That growth and development keeps going on until adulthood.

0:35:25 > 0:35:29So if they had an operation when they were 16, it may grow again.

0:35:29 > 0:35:31- Yeah.- And they may need another or another or another.

0:35:31 > 0:35:35These women don't need surgery, cos there's nothing wrong with them.

0:35:36 > 0:35:40But porn doesn't just affect the way young people think they should look.

0:35:40 > 0:35:43It also influences how they behave.

0:35:43 > 0:35:45In our survey, after we asked if porn affects

0:35:45 > 0:35:48what boys AND girls expect from sex,

0:35:48 > 0:35:52we went on to ask those who took part to tell us how.

0:35:52 > 0:35:55The most common answer that we got back was that

0:35:55 > 0:35:58young men expect women to behave like sex objects

0:35:58 > 0:36:02and young women expect to be TREATED like sex objects.

0:36:02 > 0:36:05So we had this wealth of just quotes from young people.

0:36:05 > 0:36:07I picked out a few that I thought were quite poignant.

0:36:07 > 0:36:09A 19-year-old young woman said that,

0:36:09 > 0:36:12"I think that because porn is so easily obtainable

0:36:12 > 0:36:14"and the fact that more boys than girls watch it

0:36:14 > 0:36:17"that men expect girls to be like the women in porn,"

0:36:17 > 0:36:19you know, which I can see is completely true.

0:36:19 > 0:36:22A 17-year-old boy said that, "Guys will expect the chance

0:36:22 > 0:36:25"for rougher sex or for a girl to be very flexible, etc."

0:36:25 > 0:36:28Um, a 16-year old girl said that, "Boys think that all girls

0:36:28 > 0:36:30"will behave like the girls in porn

0:36:30 > 0:36:34"and that quite a lot of the extreme stuff is totally normal."

0:36:37 > 0:36:40For me, one of the most worrying things about all this

0:36:40 > 0:36:44is that sexual images have become so normal, that many young people

0:36:44 > 0:36:47don't see a problem with creating and sharing their own.

0:36:48 > 0:36:50The trouble starts when explicit photographs

0:36:50 > 0:36:54or videos taken on phones are passed around or posted

0:36:54 > 0:36:57on social media websites like Facebook or Twitter.

0:37:03 > 0:37:05- Hi.- Hi.

0:37:05 > 0:37:08'These students are ambassadors for a project in Manchester,

0:37:08 > 0:37:13'which aims to warn school children about the dangers of "sexting".'

0:37:13 > 0:37:16People are becoming more used to seeing, like,

0:37:16 > 0:37:19indecent images of people and therefore thinking it's OK for them

0:37:19 > 0:37:22to take, you know, sort of a half naked photo of themself.

0:37:22 > 0:37:24And boys are getting a high expectation of women

0:37:24 > 0:37:27and what they think they should be doing and should look like

0:37:27 > 0:37:29and then asking for that off girls.

0:37:29 > 0:37:32Yeah, and then, girls feel like they need to live up to this standard.

0:37:32 > 0:37:35That's when, you know, they may start sending things round.

0:37:35 > 0:37:38Obviously, since the emergence of Snapchat,

0:37:38 > 0:37:41things have become, like, a lot worse, because obviously send them

0:37:41 > 0:37:44and they're like, "It's only a few seconds," but then,

0:37:44 > 0:37:48you can screen shot it, you replay it, and then it just reappears,

0:37:48 > 0:37:50people will save it, send it, Facebook, Twitter.

0:37:50 > 0:37:53Like, before the end of the night, if you send it at 7 o'clock,

0:37:53 > 0:37:56- 8 o'clock...- Yeah. - ..it could be everywhere.

0:37:56 > 0:37:58I mean, there's been cases we know where, in two days,

0:37:58 > 0:38:00it's travelled from another part of the country into our area

0:38:00 > 0:38:03and we've seen these images and we've gone like,

0:38:03 > 0:38:05- "Oh, we used to know them, we knew them."- Oh, my word!

0:38:05 > 0:38:06SOME LAUGHTER

0:38:06 > 0:38:09Why do think no-one talks about this at school?

0:38:09 > 0:38:12Adults sometimes try to ignore it a little bit,

0:38:12 > 0:38:13think that it doesn't really happen,

0:38:13 > 0:38:17especially teachers who work in schools. I mean, they're not stupid.

0:38:17 > 0:38:19They see that sort of thing going on every day.

0:38:19 > 0:38:22- Mmm.- Bullying between people, but I just think,

0:38:22 > 0:38:25because it's a sensitive issue, and it's quite a new issue as well,

0:38:25 > 0:38:27they just kind of try to ignore it.

0:38:27 > 0:38:29'But being talked about and bullied

0:38:29 > 0:38:31'is not necessarily the worst thing that can happen

0:38:31 > 0:38:35'if someone under 18 sends or posts an explicit image of themselves.

0:38:35 > 0:38:38'They could be arrested and charged.

0:38:39 > 0:38:41'Because what they're doing is

0:38:41 > 0:38:45'classed as generating and distributing a child abuse image.

0:38:45 > 0:38:49'And anyone else who re-sends or re-posts that image

0:38:49 > 0:38:51'could also be prosecuted.'

0:38:51 > 0:38:53So, what kind of trouble can you get in

0:38:53 > 0:38:56for posting a picture of someone under 18 naked?

0:38:56 > 0:38:59You could be put on the sex offenders' register.

0:38:59 > 0:39:03- And what is that?- For people like paedophiles and people like that.

0:39:03 > 0:39:05It stays with you your whole life, can hinder you getting a job,

0:39:05 > 0:39:07you can never work with children your entire life.

0:39:09 > 0:39:12Studies have found that kids across the UK

0:39:12 > 0:39:16are unaware of the legal implications of sexting.

0:39:16 > 0:39:19But police in Devon, along with other forces in England,

0:39:19 > 0:39:22are going into schools to try and change that

0:39:22 > 0:39:25by showing a video and discussing the risks.

0:39:25 > 0:39:29'I wanted to show him how much I liked him. I wanted to do it.'

0:39:38 > 0:39:41Thinking about that film,

0:39:41 > 0:39:44do you think that any laws were broken in that film?

0:39:44 > 0:39:46I think she broke the law by sending them,

0:39:46 > 0:39:49her boyfriend broke the law by keeping them and sending them on,

0:39:49 > 0:39:52and then everyone kind of broke the law by looking at them

0:39:52 > 0:39:56and keeping them on their phones and sending them around

0:39:56 > 0:39:59- and setting up a page and stuff.- OK.

0:39:59 > 0:40:01We've certainly found that, since we've started

0:40:01 > 0:40:03completing the presentations in a number of schools now,

0:40:03 > 0:40:05it is clear that young people

0:40:05 > 0:40:09have unfortunately fallen foul of having sent an image to another.

0:40:09 > 0:40:12So we're certainly seeing an increase.

0:40:12 > 0:40:15It does appear to be almost perceived as

0:40:15 > 0:40:17a normal part of a relationship,

0:40:17 > 0:40:20so, unfortunately, it does appear to be quite an up and coming issue

0:40:20 > 0:40:22that we're facing now.

0:40:22 > 0:40:26I'm not going to tell you not to share information online

0:40:26 > 0:40:28because that's your choice to do that...

0:40:28 > 0:40:31'The police will normally take a softer line the first time

0:40:31 > 0:40:33'a young person is caught sexting

0:40:33 > 0:40:37'or posting sexual images of themselves or another under-18.'

0:40:39 > 0:40:42The way that we would deal with that situation is to speak to the

0:40:42 > 0:40:46young person and almost treat them as a victim because, actually,

0:40:46 > 0:40:49they've made a mistake that they didn't appreciate the consequences.

0:40:59 > 0:41:03'Sophia is a 20-year-old student from Blackpool.

0:41:03 > 0:41:08'When she was 14 a boy she was seeing persuaded her to text him

0:41:08 > 0:41:09'a naked photo of herself.'

0:41:10 > 0:41:14We'd been texting and it got a bit rude and I reciprocated it

0:41:14 > 0:41:17and then he asked me for, basically, a naked image of myself.

0:41:17 > 0:41:19You were 14 years old. What was your reaction?

0:41:19 > 0:41:22Well, initially I was quite reluctant to send anything.

0:41:22 > 0:41:25I played it quite coy, I was like, "Oh, no I don't want to do that,"

0:41:25 > 0:41:26I was quite shy with it.

0:41:26 > 0:41:29But then because he was being so consistent with asking,

0:41:29 > 0:41:31I eventually gave in.

0:41:31 > 0:41:32So what did he do with the image?

0:41:32 > 0:41:35He showed his friends initially first and they said,

0:41:35 > 0:41:37"Oh, will you send me that image?"

0:41:37 > 0:41:40- And he was like, "Yeah, sure, why not?"- And then what happened?

0:41:40 > 0:41:43They sent it on to their friends and so forth and so forth.

0:41:43 > 0:41:44I sent it him on the weekend

0:41:44 > 0:41:49and then I'd say by Wednesday, all the local schools had it.

0:41:49 > 0:41:52How did you feel? I mean, everybody has got a picture of you naked,

0:41:52 > 0:41:55- you're 14 years old.- I felt completely stripped of my value,

0:41:55 > 0:41:59I felt like I was completely accessible. It's like, they were...

0:41:59 > 0:42:01It's like, I felt almost as though

0:42:01 > 0:42:03people were having intimate relationships with me

0:42:03 > 0:42:05that I wasn't even engaged with

0:42:05 > 0:42:07because they'd seen me in that light.

0:42:07 > 0:42:10Were people mean at all? Were they cruel?

0:42:10 > 0:42:13- Girls were mean, girls were awful. - What happened?

0:42:13 > 0:42:14In the street, they'd be like,

0:42:14 > 0:42:16"Oh, that's that so-and-so, that Sophia girl.

0:42:16 > 0:42:18"She sent that naked picture."

0:42:18 > 0:42:22And they called me a slag, they called me a slut, a camera whore.

0:42:22 > 0:42:23How did it play out?

0:42:23 > 0:42:25I'd say for a good year and a half,

0:42:25 > 0:42:30people still associated me with the girl that did that at that school.

0:42:30 > 0:42:31A year and a half?

0:42:31 > 0:42:34Yeah, yeah, a year and a half later.

0:42:34 > 0:42:36Oh, my God! That's insane.

0:42:36 > 0:42:38Yeah, no, they did.

0:42:38 > 0:42:41Why do you think young girls still do it?

0:42:41 > 0:42:42To be desired is to feel empowered,

0:42:42 > 0:42:46and I think that's what I felt when I was younger.

0:42:46 > 0:42:47I thought, "This person wants me,

0:42:47 > 0:42:49"therefore I'm sending out this image,

0:42:49 > 0:42:52"therefore I'm empowered as a female because I am desired,"

0:42:52 > 0:42:55when in fact it's weakening your image.

0:42:55 > 0:42:58As soon as something becomes accessible it loses value.

0:42:58 > 0:43:00If everyone's got it, nobody wants it any more

0:43:00 > 0:43:02and you feel somewhat worthless.

0:43:04 > 0:43:07'Because any sexual image of someone under 18

0:43:07 > 0:43:09'counts as a child abuse image,

0:43:09 > 0:43:11'once it's out there on the internet,

0:43:11 > 0:43:13'it can be taken and used in a way

0:43:13 > 0:43:16'that whoever posted it would never even think of.

0:43:21 > 0:43:25'This is the Headquarters of the Internet Watch Foundation or IWF.

0:43:25 > 0:43:27'It's their job to identify

0:43:27 > 0:43:30'and remove child sexual abuse images from the internet.

0:43:30 > 0:43:36'Last year, their hotline received 50,000 calls and e-mails

0:43:36 > 0:43:39'tipping them off about such images on the net.

0:43:39 > 0:43:43'And analysts here are finding that more and more of those images

0:43:43 > 0:43:44'are photographs and videos

0:43:44 > 0:43:48'originally posted by young people on social networking sites.'

0:43:48 > 0:43:52We've certainly seen a big rise in the last few years in the amount of

0:43:52 > 0:43:54self-generated content featuring young people.

0:43:54 > 0:43:56This would be an example of an adult website

0:43:56 > 0:43:59which accepts user-generated content.

0:43:59 > 0:44:02The reason everything is so pixellated right now is because

0:44:02 > 0:44:04we would be committing an offence

0:44:04 > 0:44:09- by actually looking at these images and downloading them.- That's right.

0:44:09 > 0:44:12These are images that have been taken from a Facebook profile,

0:44:12 > 0:44:13and you can see, it says here,

0:44:13 > 0:44:17"This is dedicated to self-shot amateur teens."

0:44:17 > 0:44:20"All teens, all curvy, with big tits only."

0:44:20 > 0:44:22Again another adult website

0:44:22 > 0:44:25with collections, specifically of young teens.

0:44:25 > 0:44:28Several descriptions of the type of content you can expect to see there.

0:44:28 > 0:44:30And down there we have "Jail bait collection."

0:44:30 > 0:44:32So anyone can go on to Facebook or Twitter,

0:44:32 > 0:44:35and let's say someone doesn't have a protected account,

0:44:35 > 0:44:38- they can just take that picture off...- That's the problem, yes.

0:44:38 > 0:44:39..then they can put it anywhere.

0:44:39 > 0:44:42Where is the worst place that these photos can end up?

0:44:42 > 0:44:46We have seen, over the last couple of years, this content is starting

0:44:46 > 0:44:51to migrate onto the traditional commercial child sexual abuse sites.

0:44:51 > 0:44:52So they can be sold?

0:44:52 > 0:44:55And this content is now being sold commercially.

0:44:55 > 0:45:00This is a sanitised screenshot of an extremely prolific commercial

0:45:00 > 0:45:02child sex distribution website.

0:45:02 > 0:45:07It claims to have 723 webcam captures available for purchase.

0:45:07 > 0:45:11The youngest victim is between the age of three and six.

0:45:11 > 0:45:15The three to six-year-old would not have generated that themselves.

0:45:15 > 0:45:19It was not generated by them but there are other individuals

0:45:19 > 0:45:23in the room who are assessed as being slightly older.

0:45:23 > 0:45:26Other children being involved, performing sex acts.

0:45:26 > 0:45:28They're all children.

0:45:37 > 0:45:41I didn't expect to learn quite so much today, I knew what they did

0:45:41 > 0:45:44was so incredibly important, I knew it was very serious,

0:45:44 > 0:45:45but I don't think I realised

0:45:45 > 0:45:48how accessible such explicit material is.

0:45:48 > 0:45:52'Also I found it quite staggering to realise the consequence of

0:45:52 > 0:45:57'something as simple as a sext and realise how fast the process is,

0:45:57 > 0:45:59'that it can literally just take over your life.'

0:45:59 > 0:46:03I am so glad that every boyfriend I've had before now

0:46:03 > 0:46:05was before picture messaging.

0:46:05 > 0:46:08I can't even tell you. It's terrifying.

0:46:10 > 0:46:13'If there are clear consequences for young people

0:46:13 > 0:46:15'when it comes to sexting and posting sexual images,

0:46:15 > 0:46:20'the effects of childhood exposure to porn are harder to gauge.

0:46:21 > 0:46:25'In February, news broke that a 12-year-old boy

0:46:25 > 0:46:27'raped his seven-year-old sister

0:46:27 > 0:46:30'after watching hardcore pornography on the internet.

0:46:30 > 0:46:33'Blackburn Youth Court heard that he'd watched it with friends

0:46:33 > 0:46:35'and gained "a desire to try it out."

0:46:39 > 0:46:42'With other sexual crimes frequently linked to porn,

0:46:42 > 0:46:46'it's easy to see why parents and politicians are so concerned.

0:46:53 > 0:46:56'Sally is in her early 20s.

0:46:56 > 0:46:59'She says she was raped by someone she thought was a friend.

0:46:59 > 0:47:01'She was drunk at the time

0:47:01 > 0:47:03'and was slipping in and out of consciousness.

0:47:03 > 0:47:08'She's convinced pornography played a part in the attack.'

0:47:08 > 0:47:11I actually came across a blog that they had

0:47:11 > 0:47:15and it was mostly made up of pornographic images.

0:47:15 > 0:47:18Erm, and that made it quite clear to me how his mind worked

0:47:18 > 0:47:23and the opinion that he had of women.

0:47:23 > 0:47:28That they were... They just existed to be used in porn.

0:47:28 > 0:47:33It just made me realise that for certain people that do these things

0:47:33 > 0:47:38it's just so ingrained in their mind that that's OK.

0:47:38 > 0:47:40- You mean rape?- Yeah. Uh-huh.

0:47:41 > 0:47:44'Sally didn't report the rape to the police

0:47:44 > 0:47:46'because she didn't think she'd be believed.

0:47:46 > 0:47:49'But she did seek support from Rape Crisis.'

0:47:49 > 0:47:53So what nature of pornography was on his blog?

0:47:53 > 0:47:56Erm, it was mostly soft porn.

0:47:56 > 0:47:59But there were other images that were quite graphic.

0:47:59 > 0:48:05And a lot of them sort of revolved around women being used

0:48:05 > 0:48:09and being abused, and women having no control over what was going on.

0:48:09 > 0:48:13So do you think that that had an influence on what he did to you?

0:48:13 > 0:48:16Yeah, because I feel as though seeing that,

0:48:16 > 0:48:20it made it clear to me that that was what he was interested in

0:48:20 > 0:48:23and that he thought that that was completely normal,

0:48:23 > 0:48:29and for him to just think that I was an object that he could use

0:48:29 > 0:48:32seemed so similar to the images that I saw.

0:48:36 > 0:48:39'Everything I've seen and heard makes me convinced

0:48:39 > 0:48:42'that children need to learn about porn,

0:48:42 > 0:48:46'so they can understand the risks and put it into context.

0:48:46 > 0:48:48'But most schools don't want to teach it,

0:48:48 > 0:48:50'partly because it's so controversial,

0:48:50 > 0:48:52'but also because they can have so much trouble

0:48:52 > 0:48:55'teaching even the most basic sex education.

0:48:56 > 0:48:58'Regulator Ofsted says the sex education

0:48:58 > 0:49:01'in a third of English schools isn't up to scratch,

0:49:01 > 0:49:05'while in Scotland there's no obligation to teach it all.

0:49:05 > 0:49:09'But there are schools like the Limes College in South London

0:49:09 > 0:49:13'where they believe the dangers of porn can no longer be ignored.'

0:49:13 > 0:49:15"Pornography shows men and women

0:49:15 > 0:49:18"as equal partners in a sexual relationship."

0:49:18 > 0:49:20They're not equal partners at all.

0:49:20 > 0:49:22If you see a porn video, the woman is like the dogsbody.

0:49:22 > 0:49:24The man can do whatever he wants to that woman.

0:49:24 > 0:49:26No respect towards a woman at all.

0:49:26 > 0:49:28You guys agree?

0:49:28 > 0:49:29- Yeah.- Yeah?

0:49:29 > 0:49:33'Sex education consultant Lynnette Smith has been going into schools

0:49:33 > 0:49:35'in North Lincolnshire for 20 years,

0:49:35 > 0:49:39'and she is concerned about what she's hearing from teenage boys.'

0:49:39 > 0:49:41We're asked quite often,

0:49:41 > 0:49:44and this is not just at one school but several schools...

0:49:46 > 0:49:49"If I'm being intimate, or if I'm trying it on with a girl

0:49:49 > 0:49:51"and she doesn't like it,

0:49:51 > 0:49:57"if I keep going and going, she will finally like it, won't she?"

0:49:57 > 0:49:59When we first started getting these questions,

0:49:59 > 0:50:01we started exploring this,

0:50:01 > 0:50:04and it links back to what they're seeing on pornography.

0:50:06 > 0:50:09'When porn is something so many kids are being exposed to,

0:50:09 > 0:50:11'I can see why people like Lynette

0:50:11 > 0:50:15'say schools need to adapt what they teach to keep up with that.

0:50:17 > 0:50:20'But just how young should the process start?

0:50:22 > 0:50:24'I'm about to get a shock.'

0:50:24 > 0:50:27I'm slightly surprised cos when we said we were going to a school,

0:50:27 > 0:50:28I didn't know it would be a primary.

0:50:28 > 0:50:31I mean, these are kids who are sort of 10 and under,

0:50:31 > 0:50:34and we're having a sex education lesson today.

0:50:34 > 0:50:36It's going to be...I mean, the kids are going to be

0:50:36 > 0:50:40learning about pornography, which is slightly terrifying

0:50:40 > 0:50:46that there is even a need to educate such young children about porn.

0:50:48 > 0:50:49This should be interesting.

0:50:52 > 0:50:57'And then I discover that it's the Year Ones, five-year-olds,

0:50:57 > 0:50:58'who will be getting this lesson.

0:51:00 > 0:51:01'So, not surprisingly,

0:51:01 > 0:51:04'that means worried parents need to be reassured.'

0:51:04 > 0:51:07I always like to have a meeting with parents

0:51:07 > 0:51:12so you know exactly what I'm talking about to your children.

0:51:12 > 0:51:14'I never work in a primary school'

0:51:14 > 0:51:16without at least first having a session with the parents

0:51:16 > 0:51:20because if I was the parent I would want to know

0:51:20 > 0:51:24who was teaching my child about pornography at five and why.

0:51:24 > 0:51:25When we were all young,

0:51:25 > 0:51:29we couldn't access the things that children can access now.

0:51:29 > 0:51:31Even though there may be fear,

0:51:31 > 0:51:35there may be suppressed anger and shock at the beginning,

0:51:35 > 0:51:38parents come round when they suddenly realise,

0:51:38 > 0:51:41"Yeah, this is necessary. This is needed."

0:51:41 > 0:51:43From ages three to six

0:51:43 > 0:51:46they're interested in the differences between boys and girls.

0:51:46 > 0:51:48It's the whole title, "Porn and Pornography"

0:51:48 > 0:51:51and those words that are terrifying for parents.

0:51:51 > 0:51:53Now I've been in and learned what it's going to be

0:51:53 > 0:51:56and that it's in the right context, I'm at ease with it.

0:51:56 > 0:51:58My husband was terrified thinking his little girl's

0:51:58 > 0:52:01going to be taught about pornography, but it's not.

0:52:01 > 0:52:04'After 45 minutes reassuring the parents,

0:52:04 > 0:52:07'it's time to bring in the five-year-olds.'

0:52:07 > 0:52:09I find this so interesting cos I don't know how you explain

0:52:09 > 0:52:12where babies come from to a five-year-old.

0:52:12 > 0:52:14It's a lot easier than you think.

0:52:14 > 0:52:15Oh, really? Cos I'm 27

0:52:15 > 0:52:19and I don't think I've still spoken about it with my parents.

0:52:19 > 0:52:24Would you like to just sit down here, please? Let's have a little line.

0:52:24 > 0:52:27I've got lots of you. That's brilliant, isn't it?

0:52:27 > 0:52:28Now what we're going to do today

0:52:28 > 0:52:31is we're going to talk about keeping safe.

0:52:31 > 0:52:34Does anybody know the correct scientific word

0:52:34 > 0:52:35for what a boy's got?

0:52:35 > 0:52:37The penis.

0:52:37 > 0:52:41Excellent, that's said like a proper scientist or a doctor or a nurse.

0:52:41 > 0:52:45- Yes.- I know the other one. - You know what a girl's got, do you,

0:52:45 > 0:52:48- the correct scientific word, and what's that?- Vagina.

0:52:48 > 0:52:49Excellent.

0:52:49 > 0:52:53'So far so good, but I'm still not sure how Lynnette is going to

0:52:53 > 0:52:56'broach the subject of porn with five-year-olds.'

0:52:56 > 0:53:03Now, we've got a boy taking a picture of another boy.

0:53:03 > 0:53:06- Is that OK?- Yeah.- Yes!

0:53:06 > 0:53:09But I want you to look closely at this picture.

0:53:09 > 0:53:11- Is that OK?- No!

0:53:11 > 0:53:14KIDS GIGGLE

0:53:14 > 0:53:16Shh.

0:53:16 > 0:53:18That's not OK, is it?

0:53:18 > 0:53:20- No!- No!- No.

0:53:20 > 0:53:24Nobody should ever take photographs of you like that

0:53:24 > 0:53:26or the private parts of your body.

0:53:26 > 0:53:29Let's have a look at this next picture.

0:53:31 > 0:53:34If you look at that, somebody's got a phone or a tablet,

0:53:34 > 0:53:38- and can you see on that phone or tablet?- It's women!

0:53:38 > 0:53:43- It's a woman with no clothes on, isn't it?- Naked!- Yeah.

0:53:43 > 0:53:46Right, if any older children

0:53:46 > 0:53:50try to show you photos or pictures on their phones like that,

0:53:50 > 0:53:53you need to tell an adult or a grown-up.

0:53:53 > 0:53:57I really think we owe it to children and young people to keep them safe,

0:53:57 > 0:54:00and, as we all know, knowledge is power.

0:54:00 > 0:54:05But if we can't get over the basics of straightforward sex education,

0:54:05 > 0:54:09how on earth can we tackle these stronger issues like pornography?

0:54:09 > 0:54:12Nobody should touch us there between our legs,

0:54:12 > 0:54:15and nobody should touch our bottoms.

0:54:15 > 0:54:16KIDS GIGGLE

0:54:16 > 0:54:19We need to take this far more seriously.

0:54:19 > 0:54:21It's not an optional extra.

0:54:21 > 0:54:26We've got to wake up and realise that it's becoming a big, big issue.

0:54:26 > 0:54:29Now what I want us to do very quietly

0:54:29 > 0:54:32is to go back to our class room.

0:54:32 > 0:54:34KIDS LAUGH AND CHATTER

0:54:34 > 0:54:37When I first walked in, you know, it being a primary school

0:54:37 > 0:54:39and then finding out it was five-year-olds

0:54:39 > 0:54:41broaching the topic of pornography,

0:54:41 > 0:54:44I was a little bit reluctant because I thought...

0:54:44 > 0:54:46It felt slightly unnecessarily young.

0:54:46 > 0:54:49And yet within about five minutes of the lesson

0:54:49 > 0:54:54you realise how armed they are with knowledge.

0:54:56 > 0:54:57'What I found really interesting

0:54:57 > 0:55:00'was that in the sessions with the youngest children,

0:55:00 > 0:55:03'the word "pornography" wasn't even used.

0:55:03 > 0:55:07'So I can see that if these ideas are introduced carefully early on,

0:55:07 > 0:55:09'it could make a big difference

0:55:09 > 0:55:12'when kids come across real porn as they get older.

0:55:12 > 0:55:15'And certainly many of the teenagers I've met

0:55:15 > 0:55:18'wish they'd been better prepared for what they've seen.'

0:55:18 > 0:55:23I heard a group of, erm, Year 8 boys talking about...

0:55:23 > 0:55:27They'd been watching porn and they're only, like, 12, 13,

0:55:27 > 0:55:29and they were saying stuff like,

0:55:29 > 0:55:32"Oh, is this normal, is that normal?" and stuff like that,

0:55:32 > 0:55:34so I don't think they really understand that

0:55:34 > 0:55:38not everything that you see on porn is normal and what's expected.

0:55:40 > 0:55:44I think it would be a good idea to teach kids about porn

0:55:44 > 0:55:48and what it's all about and the things that they watch,

0:55:48 > 0:55:52they shouldn't be expecting that in real life.

0:55:53 > 0:55:56I have seen some pretty scary stuff on the internet.

0:55:56 > 0:55:59If parents did see that they'd be like, "Whoa, why is that on there?"

0:55:59 > 0:56:01Or, "That shouldn't be on there, that's disgraceful."

0:56:01 > 0:56:04And to us it's just normal cos we've seen it that many times.

0:56:04 > 0:56:06So I don't think parents have any idea

0:56:06 > 0:56:08that that type of stuff is out there.

0:56:10 > 0:56:13I don't think there's ever going to be a way of protecting all children

0:56:13 > 0:56:15from seeing online pornography.

0:56:15 > 0:56:19The internet's too big, it's too vast and it's way too accessible.

0:56:19 > 0:56:22But there is a huge difference between the kids who are scared

0:56:22 > 0:56:23and affected by what they see

0:56:23 > 0:56:27and those who aren't necessarily, the ones who put it into context

0:56:27 > 0:56:30and they really understand what it is that they're seeing.

0:56:30 > 0:56:35We have to understand that this is something that is in the homes

0:56:35 > 0:56:37and in the lives and in the minds of our children,

0:56:37 > 0:56:40and we have to protect them by discussing it

0:56:40 > 0:56:42and educating them about what it is that they're seeing.
