0:00:02 > 0:00:05This programme contains strong language and scenes which some viewers may find disturbing.

0:00:05 > 0:00:08I spent last summer making a film about the Ku Klux Klan.

0:00:08 > 0:00:09- White Power!- White Power!

0:00:09 > 0:00:12At private gatherings and public demonstrations...

0:00:12 > 0:00:14- White Power!- White Power!

0:00:14 > 0:00:16..I saw first-hand

0:00:16 > 0:00:19the furious reaction of many Americans to racism.

0:00:19 > 0:00:23- White Power!- Black Power! - White Power!- Black Power!

0:00:25 > 0:00:28But I also met a lot of people flying the Pan-African flags

0:00:28 > 0:00:31calling for revolution and chanting "Black Power".

0:00:31 > 0:00:34Black Power! Black Power!

0:00:34 > 0:00:37I didn't really know what Black Power meant.

0:00:37 > 0:00:39We are here because black people are the creators of the world and

0:00:39 > 0:00:43wherever we go, we're going to take over. You just forgot.

0:00:43 > 0:00:46I'm back to find out what the Black Liberation Movement

0:00:46 > 0:00:47are fighting for...

0:00:47 > 0:00:50- Arm yourself, defend yourself! - Arm yourself, defend yourself!

0:00:50 > 0:00:53Every time you look at the media, one of our people got murdered.

0:00:53 > 0:00:57..and meet America's armed resistance.

0:00:57 > 0:01:01If the police attempt to derail us, we'll take an offensive position.

0:01:01 > 0:01:04Ain't no power like the power of the people,

0:01:04 > 0:01:07- cos the power of the people don't stop!- Say what?!

0:01:13 > 0:01:17Last summer, the white supremacist Dylann Roof walked into

0:01:17 > 0:01:22a famous African-American church and slaughtered nine black worshippers

0:01:22 > 0:01:25in an attack that shocked the world.

0:01:25 > 0:01:29It's been six months since the massacre and I'm back in Charleston

0:01:29 > 0:01:32to meet local activists Indeya and Shakem, who are still demonstrating

0:01:32 > 0:01:35outside Emanuel Church.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38None of these mayoral candidates in Charleston have addressed

0:01:38 > 0:01:42race and race relations. Nobody wants to talk about it.

0:01:42 > 0:01:46What happened here was an act of terrorism.

0:01:46 > 0:01:50The media refuses to label this as terrorism.

0:01:50 > 0:01:52They want to say, "Wait, wait, wait,

0:01:52 > 0:01:54"wait till all of the details come out."

0:01:54 > 0:01:57But had it been reversed, had it been one of us to go into

0:01:57 > 0:02:01a white church and gun down nine people,

0:02:01 > 0:02:02it would have been terrorism.

0:02:02 > 0:02:05Why have you got that flag and what does it mean?

0:02:05 > 0:02:08Red represents the blood, black represents the people,

0:02:08 > 0:02:10and green represents the land.

0:02:10 > 0:02:13It's reflective of Africa and it's reflective of Africans

0:02:13 > 0:02:15and black people all across the world.

0:02:15 > 0:02:17I think that anyone who fears this flag...

0:02:20 > 0:02:24..they fear the abolishment of white supremacy.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26This flag means black unity.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29We are simply trying to do what every other ethnicity

0:02:29 > 0:02:33has in this country, which is building their own communities,

0:02:33 > 0:02:36their own economics, and it's not a problem when anyone else does it

0:02:36 > 0:02:38except for black people.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41You don't see anyone go to any city that has Chinatown

0:02:41 > 0:02:46or Little Italy or an area with a zillion Irish pubs and shamrocks,

0:02:46 > 0:02:49no-one goes and says, "Oh, my God! They're racist over there!

0:02:49 > 0:02:52"Why do they have this Irish pub?"

0:02:52 > 0:02:54So you want to be able to celebrate black identity?

0:02:54 > 0:02:57Exactly. It's about black empowerment,

0:02:57 > 0:03:01it's about embodying and learning and being proud of our own culture.

0:03:01 > 0:03:05It's about building a sense of community within our people.

0:03:05 > 0:03:09That's the difference and that's what people don't understand

0:03:09 > 0:03:10and they make it hate.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16Charleston has a long history of racial inequality.

0:03:16 > 0:03:20At least 40% of America's African slaves came through the port.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25Shakem and his friend, Azeez, wanted to take me

0:03:25 > 0:03:28to one of Charleston's most historic institutions,

0:03:28 > 0:03:31a military university called the Citadel.

0:03:31 > 0:03:36Everybody outside of South Carolina and especially Charleston

0:03:36 > 0:03:41has this perception that the Citadel is the creme de la creme,

0:03:41 > 0:03:44but when you peel back

0:03:44 > 0:03:47the layers, it's not.

0:03:47 > 0:03:53When I was growing up, they told us that the Citadel is a private school

0:03:53 > 0:03:56that blacks couldn't apply to because it was private.

0:03:58 > 0:04:00The Citadel is a public school.

0:04:00 > 0:04:05Everybody that goes to public schooling that has the grades

0:04:05 > 0:04:08should be able to apply there.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11Despite 28% of Charleston residents being black,

0:04:11 > 0:04:17black students make up just 8% of the undergraduates at the Citadel.

0:04:17 > 0:04:21We have an article right here where it talks about a Christmas party

0:04:21 > 0:04:24that was done at the Citadel with cadets.

0:04:24 > 0:04:29At this party, they actually dressed up in hoods and white sheets

0:04:29 > 0:04:32and they began to sing Christmas carols.

0:04:32 > 0:04:35There's a lot of these children coming from these schools,

0:04:35 > 0:04:37these are going to be future lawyers, these are going to be

0:04:37 > 0:04:40future doctors, these are going to be police officers.

0:04:40 > 0:04:44So now you have these young Citadel military cadets

0:04:44 > 0:04:47engaging in this type of behaviour and shows you that the attitude

0:04:47 > 0:04:49is still prevalent in this society

0:04:49 > 0:04:52in these future lawyers, doctors and judges.

0:04:55 > 0:04:57The Citadel investigation concluded the students

0:04:57 > 0:05:01didn't mean to cause offence, but still disciplined them.

0:05:01 > 0:05:05To many onlookers, the incident showed just how widely accepted

0:05:05 > 0:05:07the Ku Klux Klan are in this part of the world.

0:05:12 > 0:05:16The KKK are still the poster boys of white supremacy,

0:05:16 > 0:05:20so I went to catch up with America's largest Klan chapter,

0:05:20 > 0:05:22the Loyal White Knights.

0:05:22 > 0:05:24It was the first time I'd seen them

0:05:24 > 0:05:27since they marched on Columbia last summer.

0:05:27 > 0:05:29- What do we want?- White Power!

0:05:29 > 0:05:31- When do we want it?- Now!

0:05:31 > 0:05:35- Coward! Coward!- Go to them fields, you fucking monkeys.

0:05:35 > 0:05:37IMITATES MONKEY

0:05:37 > 0:05:38Fucking gorillas.

0:05:38 > 0:05:42They invited me to their first rally of the year.

0:05:42 > 0:05:46All I've heard all day is nigger this, nigger that.

0:05:46 > 0:05:48These niggers are so sorry, a single brigade of the military

0:05:48 > 0:05:51could take these niggers out at the weekend.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54I could throw in a book like this one.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57These are by a good author, too.

0:05:57 > 0:06:00I think he's locked up in prison.

0:06:00 > 0:06:03I wanted to know what the Klan made of the rise

0:06:03 > 0:06:05of black activist groups.

0:06:05 > 0:06:10You got all this Black Lives Matter, the Jews are financing them

0:06:10 > 0:06:13and they're out, they've already called war

0:06:13 > 0:06:17against all whites and cops.

0:06:17 > 0:06:19They're our mortal enemy.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22Were you at South Carolina at the rally?

0:06:22 > 0:06:24- Yes.- OK.- In Columbia, yeah.

0:06:24 > 0:06:26You heard Black Lives Matter.

0:06:26 > 0:06:28What were they chanting? "Kill whitey."

0:06:28 > 0:06:30Were we yelling, "Kill niggers"?

0:06:30 > 0:06:33No, we were standing up for our heritage.

0:06:33 > 0:06:35In fairness, some people were making monkey noises.

0:06:35 > 0:06:38Oh, yeah, that's just joking, you know?

0:06:38 > 0:06:40He was having a good time.

0:06:40 > 0:06:45Blacks, they're known to be drug dealers, carry guns.

0:06:45 > 0:06:48What gives you the impression that black people

0:06:48 > 0:06:50are more heavily involved in crime than whites?

0:06:50 > 0:06:53Because of the way they are brought up. They're brought up in projects,

0:06:53 > 0:06:57they're brought up in single-parent homes. Their dad's in prison,

0:06:57 > 0:07:00their mom's a coke whore, most of the time,

0:07:00 > 0:07:04and they're a product of their environment.

0:07:04 > 0:07:06If they would have stayed in Africa,

0:07:06 > 0:07:08they would have been fine.

0:07:08 > 0:07:12So is this same environment also affecting white people?

0:07:12 > 0:07:15No, because we stay away from the slums.

0:07:15 > 0:07:20We have brains to say, "Hey, that's a crime neighbourhood,

0:07:20 > 0:07:22"I don't want to live there."

0:07:22 > 0:07:24These blacks, they say,

0:07:24 > 0:07:29"Oh, we're going to get on welfare, we're going to get housing."

0:07:29 > 0:07:32Do you think that's a conscious decision or that's just...?

0:07:32 > 0:07:33That's their way of life.

0:07:35 > 0:07:38Hate group watcher the Southern Poverty Law Centre

0:07:38 > 0:07:42claim the number of active Klan groups increased in 2015

0:07:42 > 0:07:46for the first time in years. They reckon there's now 190 Klans

0:07:46 > 0:07:49in America, up from 72 the year before.

0:07:49 > 0:07:52Do not turn your back on the cross.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57The cross is an inspiration, a sign of Christian religion,

0:07:57 > 0:08:00a symbol of faith, hope and love.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03- White Power! - ALL:- White Power!

0:08:03 > 0:08:05MEN YELL AND CHEER

0:08:08 > 0:08:10MAN YELLS

0:08:13 > 0:08:16As new recruits were measured for Klan hoods,

0:08:16 > 0:08:20talk turned to chartering a new Klan chapter in Texas.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23Is there a big Klan presence in Texas?

0:08:23 > 0:08:24Yes, yes, there is.

0:08:26 > 0:08:28It's getting bigger and bigger.

0:08:28 > 0:08:31Do you think there's any Klansmen in the police force?

0:08:31 > 0:08:33Oh, yes, I know there are.

0:08:33 > 0:08:37There's policeman, there's politicians, there's congressmen,

0:08:37 > 0:08:39there's city councilmen.

0:08:39 > 0:08:45If you're a police officer, you have to be a Klansman first

0:08:45 > 0:08:47and then a police officer.

0:08:47 > 0:08:50So your loyalty should be to the Klan first?

0:08:50 > 0:08:54Right, yes. Police officers' loyalty are to the Klan first.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02It wasn't the first time I'd heard Klansmen claim

0:09:02 > 0:09:04they have members who are cops.

0:09:04 > 0:09:09It was the first time anyone had mentioned Dallas,

0:09:09 > 0:09:11a city where videos of police brutality

0:09:11 > 0:09:13have been making headlines.

0:09:13 > 0:09:15Move! Move!

0:09:18 > 0:09:21Neighbours called the cops when these black kids turned up

0:09:21 > 0:09:23at a white kids' pool party.

0:09:23 > 0:09:26- Get on the ground!- Look, sir... - I told you to stay!

0:09:26 > 0:09:28Get your asses down on the ground!

0:09:33 > 0:09:35On the grass!

0:09:35 > 0:09:37- What's the matter?!- Sir... - We just got here.

0:09:37 > 0:09:39Sir, we just came for a birthday party.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41What the fuck is going on?

0:09:42 > 0:09:45KIDS SCREAM

0:09:51 > 0:09:56This officer felt it necessary to draw his gun on kids in swimsuits.

0:10:02 > 0:10:04On your face!

0:10:05 > 0:10:07The officer was suspended and then resigned.

0:10:09 > 0:10:13There's no suggestion he has anything to do with the KKK,

0:10:13 > 0:10:16but the videos provide a glimpse into how some cops

0:10:16 > 0:10:18treat the black community.

0:10:21 > 0:10:23PEOPLE CHANT

0:10:23 > 0:10:27When the video dropped, protests erupted in this part of Dallas,

0:10:27 > 0:10:29with this man, LA, at the forefront.

0:10:32 > 0:10:35He tried to build bridges with rival demonstrators

0:10:35 > 0:10:40who were supporting the police by joining hands and praying.

0:10:40 > 0:10:42They want to make it a black and white thing,

0:10:42 > 0:10:44and it's not a black and white thing,

0:10:44 > 0:10:48it's a community versus the police that are abusing their power.

0:10:48 > 0:10:52I went to a Dallas peace rally to meet up with LA,

0:10:52 > 0:10:55who was exercising his legal right to carry a gun.

0:10:55 > 0:10:58You've come not just as an activist, you're armed, as well.

0:10:58 > 0:11:01I'm armed with the AR-15, the 30-round clip.

0:11:02 > 0:11:04Infrared beam.

0:11:04 > 0:11:06Can you just tell me why?

0:11:06 > 0:11:08We are here to protect ourselves and our people,

0:11:08 > 0:11:11we're not out here just to put ourselves in harm's way at all.

0:11:11 > 0:11:15I mean, I'm here to protect my family, my fellow countrymen.

0:11:15 > 0:11:17But what are you protecting people from at a peace rally?

0:11:17 > 0:11:20We're here just in case the opposition shows up.

0:11:20 > 0:11:23We're taking on the Dallas police force,

0:11:23 > 0:11:26the Philadelphia police force, the Los Angeles police force,

0:11:26 > 0:11:28the United States Government police force -

0:11:28 > 0:11:31any force that stands against our human rights.

0:11:31 > 0:11:35The police have more murders in the US than Isis

0:11:35 > 0:11:38and all the other terrorist groups alone this year.

0:11:38 > 0:11:40Who do we call? Who do we call for help and safety?

0:11:40 > 0:11:44I call my family, and I call myself, and I call my AR-15, my best friend.

0:11:49 > 0:11:51So why are people scared to call the Dallas PD?

0:11:54 > 0:11:56Saturday afternoon in Dallas.

0:11:56 > 0:11:59Shirley Harrison has called the cops,

0:11:59 > 0:12:03asking them to take her schizophrenic son Jason to hospital.

0:12:03 > 0:12:06It's a call she's made dozens of times before.

0:12:06 > 0:12:08How you doing, ma'am? What's going on?

0:12:13 > 0:12:14What's going on?

0:12:14 > 0:12:17- Can you drop that for me? Drop that for me, guy.- Jay!

0:12:17 > 0:12:19- Jay!- Drop it. Drop it.

0:12:19 > 0:12:20- Don't shoot! - MULTIPLE GUN BLASTS

0:12:20 > 0:12:23- SHIRLEY SCREAMS - You killed my son!

0:12:23 > 0:12:26You killed my child! You killed my son!

0:12:26 > 0:12:30- Drop it!- Shots fired. Code three.

0:12:30 > 0:12:33- Drop that.- Drop it. Drop it!

0:12:33 > 0:12:35Put it down.

0:12:35 > 0:12:38Cops say Jason lunged at them with a screwdriver.

0:12:38 > 0:12:41They were boxed in and had to protect themselves.

0:12:41 > 0:12:43SHIRLEY CONTINUES SCREAMING

0:12:43 > 0:12:45A grand jury agreed.

0:12:45 > 0:12:47Neither cop was indicted.

0:12:48 > 0:12:50This wasn't an isolated incident.

0:12:50 > 0:12:5539 people have been shot dead by Dallas cops in the last five years.

0:12:55 > 0:12:59To put that in context, in the same period, London's Met Police,

0:12:59 > 0:13:01which patrols a city five times the size of Dallas,

0:13:01 > 0:13:04have shot dead four people.

0:13:04 > 0:13:07LA thinks the police are a serious threat to the black community.

0:13:07 > 0:13:10They're the biggest gang across the country, is the police force.

0:13:10 > 0:13:12They do what they want to do at no consequence.

0:13:12 > 0:13:17Kill people in broad daylight on camera and they get away with it,

0:13:17 > 0:13:19so... I mean, it's just a terrible system.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22There's so many instances where people call the police

0:13:22 > 0:13:24because they're trying to do the right thing.

0:13:24 > 0:13:25And the police come, foolhardily,

0:13:25 > 0:13:28and hurt people that are close to them,

0:13:28 > 0:13:30and they regret calling the police.

0:13:30 > 0:13:34'LA is an unmarried father with ten kids.

0:13:34 > 0:13:37'He is raising five of them on his own.'

0:13:37 > 0:13:41If your kids were having trouble, would you tell them to call 911?

0:13:41 > 0:13:43My kids call their dad.

0:13:43 > 0:13:45We call our family.

0:13:45 > 0:13:47We don't call 911.

0:13:49 > 0:13:52My kids are afraid of the police.

0:13:52 > 0:13:55How can you respect somebody that kills people?

0:13:55 > 0:13:59These are kids of the revolution, man. These are pretty cool kids.

0:13:59 > 0:14:02- Where you guys going when you get older?- ALL:- College.

0:14:02 > 0:14:04- Where are you going when you get older?- College.

0:14:04 > 0:14:07- Black lives...?- Matter. - Black lives...?- Matter.

0:14:07 > 0:14:09- All power to the people. - All power to the people.

0:14:09 > 0:14:12- All power to the people! - All power to the people!

0:14:13 > 0:14:15We don't fear the police.

0:14:15 > 0:14:17Although they bully us and they shoot us and they kill us,

0:14:17 > 0:14:20we don't fear them. So we let the people know,

0:14:20 > 0:14:23and the communities know, that we're not afraid.

0:14:23 > 0:14:25And the people that are afraid,

0:14:25 > 0:14:27there are people out here that will defend them, as well.

0:14:27 > 0:14:29It's no longer going to be hands up,

0:14:29 > 0:14:32and we're just going to allow you to shoot us, and we're unarmed.

0:14:32 > 0:14:34So we're going to be hands down, shoot back.

0:14:34 > 0:14:36If you shoot at us, we're going to shoot back.

0:14:42 > 0:14:45- What you got in there? - A Smith and Wesson .40 Glock.

0:14:45 > 0:14:47Why are you getting it out now?

0:14:47 > 0:14:50Man, we've got to make sure that...

0:14:51 > 0:14:55..that we're prepared. We're not looking for any trouble,

0:18:35 > 0:18:38"How dare you, dog, put your hand on me."

0:18:40 > 0:18:45And what made it even worse is you see Officer Slager turn around,

0:18:52 > 0:18:55Slager claims Walter Scott fought him

0:20:28 > 0:20:32- LOUDSPEAKER:- Attention, there is a murderer on the loose.

0:20:32 > 0:20:34Who are you organising this with?

0:20:34 > 0:20:37Whilst you have Black Lives Matter and you have other groups,

0:20:37 > 0:20:40but a lot of times you just have the average people on the street

0:21:04 > 0:21:08Is it fair to keep a citizen inside for months

0:21:08 > 0:21:11when he hasn't been found guilty?

0:21:11 > 0:21:15I sat in the county jail for two years on a drug charge with no bond.

0:21:15 > 0:21:17What makes him any different than me?

0:21:17 > 0:21:19He's on a murder charge, I'm on a federal drug charge.

0:21:19 > 0:21:22I sat in county jail two years. Why he can't sit?

0:21:35 > 0:21:38You're in a restricted area, you need to leave.

0:21:38 > 0:21:43It's sad. It's sad, but it lets you know that racism

0:21:59 > 0:22:03That's evening, there was a public meeting about Slager's release.

0:22:03 > 0:22:05Despite the open invitation,

0:22:05 > 0:22:09when I turned up, I found all white people had been asked to leave.

0:22:12 > 0:22:14Basically, it was a flyer saying,

0:22:14 > 0:22:18"Community town hall meeting now. 6pm tonight."

0:22:18 > 0:22:21OK? That's why we came here. And you see what's happening.

0:22:21 > 0:22:23And you got here, what's happened?

0:22:23 > 0:22:25And we got here and they won't let us in. They locked the doors.

0:22:25 > 0:22:28I just wanted to hear what they had to say.

0:22:28 > 0:22:33Luckily, I bumped into Indeya, who I'd met back at Emanuel Church.

0:22:33 > 0:22:37You actually just missed a very interesting confrontation.

0:22:37 > 0:22:40'There's a guy that's been following us around...

0:22:40 > 0:22:43'and threatening us, and he's got a weapon,

0:22:43 > 0:22:45'and he's carrying his weapon

0:22:45 > 0:22:47'and telling us, "Black brains splatter."

0:22:47 > 0:22:49'So he just tried to infiltrate our meeting.

0:22:49 > 0:22:51'We had to remove him from the room.'

0:22:51 > 0:22:53- I never said "Black brains splatter!"- Let's go.

0:22:53 > 0:22:56So what we did is we created an African-only space for a second,

0:22:56 > 0:23:00just to regroup and think about security and who's who.

0:23:00 > 0:23:03- I've got to ask you to please leave. - I'm going. I'm leaving.

0:23:03 > 0:23:06- Can somebody follow him?- Keep your hands where we can see them.

0:23:06 > 0:23:09And some of our European alliances, who are very consistent,

0:23:09 > 0:23:13that we love, they felt a little upset.

0:23:13 > 0:23:16And so we had to explain to them why there's that tension and

0:23:16 > 0:23:19apprehension, and the only example we could give them is Dylann Roof

0:23:19 > 0:23:22sat in the church and prayed with our elders for an hour,

0:23:22 > 0:23:25and they welcomed him with open hands and he shot each one of them

0:23:25 > 0:23:26execution-style in the back.

0:23:26 > 0:23:29These are the kind of things that we're up against as we're trying to

0:23:29 > 0:23:31unify and mobilise our committee.

0:23:31 > 0:23:33We have people following us around with guns

0:23:33 > 0:23:35and telling us, "Black brains splatter."

0:23:40 > 0:23:43So who is this armed white guy

0:23:43 > 0:23:46infiltrating meetings and making threats?

0:23:48 > 0:23:50It didn't take me long to find him.

0:23:52 > 0:23:54How many tanks have you got?

0:23:54 > 0:23:56Five tanks.

0:23:56 > 0:23:59And these fish know that you are strangers.

0:23:59 > 0:24:00There you go, buddy.

0:24:00 > 0:24:02This is Scott Garland,

0:24:02 > 0:24:07a retired, single Trump supporter with a love of fish.

0:24:07 > 0:24:09Why did you want to go to their meeting on Friday night?

0:24:12 > 0:24:14Cos I knew that eventually I would be recognised,

0:24:14 > 0:24:18and it would somewhat get under their skin

0:24:18 > 0:24:21that I had gotten into that meeting.

0:24:21 > 0:24:23And all hell broke loose.

0:24:23 > 0:24:25'Everybody is standing up and pointing at me...'

0:24:25 > 0:24:29I never said... I never said, "Black brains spatter."

0:24:29 > 0:24:31Let's go.

0:24:31 > 0:24:32'Saying, "Oh, yeah, that's the guy

0:24:32 > 0:24:35"that always says black brains spatter",'

0:24:35 > 0:24:39which I have never, ever said anything like that.

0:24:42 > 0:24:45They've actually claimed that I had a gun with me,

0:24:45 > 0:24:47which is absolutely untrue.

0:24:47 > 0:24:50- You didn't have a gun? - I absolutely did not have a gun.

0:24:50 > 0:24:54I carry a gun in my console, which is legal here.

0:24:54 > 0:24:56So you have a gun in your car?

0:24:56 > 0:24:59I do. I keep... I take a gun with me.

0:24:59 > 0:25:00Why do you want to carry a pistol?

0:25:00 > 0:25:03It just... To me, it seems a natural thing.

0:25:03 > 0:25:08It's just a smart thing to do, is to have some protection.

0:25:08 > 0:25:10- Are you dangerous, Scott? - Am I dangerous?

0:25:10 > 0:25:12No. I'm a pretty courteous guy.

0:25:12 > 0:25:17I open doors for people, I smile at people, I say hello to people,

0:25:17 > 0:25:20regardless of their colour.

0:25:20 > 0:25:22Scott is retired Air Force,

0:25:22 > 0:25:25now dedicating some of his time to demonstrating on the street

0:25:25 > 0:25:27with home-made signs.

0:25:27 > 0:25:29So this is a very touchy one.

0:25:29 > 0:25:32I haven't used it, I don't know if I ever will use it.

0:25:32 > 0:25:34It's a little bit edgy.

0:25:34 > 0:25:36What does it mean?

0:25:36 > 0:25:39It means that the Black Lives Matter...

0:25:40 > 0:25:44..is starting to feel very much like they hate whites.

0:25:44 > 0:25:45And...

0:25:47 > 0:25:49..there's just that...

0:25:49 > 0:25:53that feeling of it, that, you know, they're racist.

0:25:53 > 0:25:56A lot of people are saying that they're a hate group,

0:25:56 > 0:26:01that they're the, you know, the modern day KKK of black people.

0:26:04 > 0:26:06Scott is a big supporter of the police,

0:26:06 > 0:26:10so I wanted to know what he made of the Walter Scott shooting.

0:26:10 > 0:26:13Mr Scott stepped out of that car and ran away.

0:26:13 > 0:26:16That's fleeing a police officer. It's resisting arrest.

0:26:16 > 0:26:18So now, he's a criminal.

0:26:18 > 0:26:22You mention running and tackling him again.

0:26:22 > 0:26:26For a second or, who knows, maybe a third or fourth time.

0:26:26 > 0:26:29We don't know what happened before that camera started rolling.

0:26:29 > 0:26:31So how many times do I have to get away from you

0:26:31 > 0:26:33before you're allowed to shoot me?

0:26:33 > 0:26:36I mean, if you're running after me, and I'm running away,

0:26:36 > 0:26:38and you tackle me and I get up and run,

0:26:38 > 0:26:40and you tackle me and I get up and I run,

0:26:40 > 0:26:42and you Taser me and I get up and I run...

0:26:42 > 0:26:43And I'm out of Taser darts.

0:26:43 > 0:26:45..at that point, it's justified to shoot me?

0:26:47 > 0:26:49Yes. Yes, it is.

0:26:49 > 0:26:52I feel like, if I was in the same situation,

0:26:52 > 0:26:53I might do the same thing.

0:26:57 > 0:26:59Sometimes police kill people.

0:26:59 > 0:27:00It's life.

0:27:00 > 0:27:02It's just the way things are.

0:27:02 > 0:27:05- FEMALE:- Oh, my God, drop it!

0:27:05 > 0:27:06Drop it!

0:27:06 > 0:27:08SHE CRIES

0:27:08 > 0:27:10"Sometimes police kill people."

0:27:10 > 0:27:11Drop it! Just drop it!

0:27:11 > 0:27:14But how many? The US Government doesn't even keep count.

0:27:14 > 0:27:17- Drop it! - GUNSHOTS

0:27:17 > 0:27:20Oh, my God! Oh, my God!

0:27:20 > 0:27:22Are you fucking serious?

0:27:22 > 0:27:24Are you fucking serious?

0:27:24 > 0:27:30But if, like this man, Mario Woods, you're aged 15 to 34 and black,

0:27:30 > 0:27:33you're nine times more likely to be killed than anyone else.

0:27:33 > 0:27:35Oh, my God!

0:27:35 > 0:27:37Nine times.

0:27:37 > 0:27:43Best estimate is 1,100 people were killed by American cops in 2015.

0:27:43 > 0:27:47Compare that to just three killed by police in the UK.

0:27:47 > 0:27:50Do you have to shoot them dead every fucking time?

0:27:50 > 0:27:54Yes, America is a bigger country with one of the highest murder rates

0:27:54 > 0:27:58in the developed world, and 300 million privately owned firearms.

0:27:58 > 0:28:01But 1,100 people?

0:28:01 > 0:28:04I approached the Dallas PD to get their thoughts.

0:28:04 > 0:28:07They repeatedly turned down my request for an interview,

0:28:07 > 0:28:09but I did manage to track down

0:28:09 > 0:28:12an officer who was prepared to speak anonymously.

0:28:12 > 0:28:15He's black and worked a Dallas beat for three years.

0:28:17 > 0:28:20When you talk to officers who've actually been in shootings,

0:28:20 > 0:28:22I've talked to quite a few of them

0:28:22 > 0:28:24that have actually been in shootings

0:28:24 > 0:28:25that have killed people.

0:28:25 > 0:28:27Some, they kind of glorify it.

0:28:29 > 0:28:30Is there such a thing as bad cops?

0:28:30 > 0:28:33Yeah, yeah. There is such a thing as bad cops.

0:28:33 > 0:28:3590% of cops are doing their job,

0:28:35 > 0:28:39but it's that small percent that makes everybody look bad.

0:28:39 > 0:28:43I've met a few, you know, in my academy class.

0:28:43 > 0:28:46And, you know, they were from...

0:28:46 > 0:28:48they weren't from a metropolitan city,

0:28:48 > 0:28:51they actually grew up in the suburbs.

0:28:51 > 0:28:54They even told me that they had never had any interaction

0:28:54 > 0:28:56with any minorities.

0:28:56 > 0:29:01His only interaction with minorities is what he sees on TV.

0:29:01 > 0:29:04And then you take him, you put him through the academy,

0:29:04 > 0:29:06you train him and you put them out here

0:29:06 > 0:29:10in that community and tell him to enforce the law,

0:29:10 > 0:29:12it's going to be a culture shock.

0:29:13 > 0:29:16Can you understand why members of the black community

0:29:16 > 0:29:20across the country feel that the police are brutalising them,

0:29:20 > 0:29:24- when they see all these incidents? - Yeah, because you can't have

0:29:24 > 0:29:27a whole group of people, er...

0:29:27 > 0:29:29black citizens of America,

0:29:29 > 0:29:32all saying the same thing from different parts of the country.

0:29:34 > 0:29:35All of them are wrong?

0:29:38 > 0:29:41I think some officers don't know

0:29:41 > 0:29:43when enough is enough, or when it's just like,

0:29:43 > 0:29:46"OK, just leave well enough alone."

0:29:46 > 0:29:50They kind of instigate things, and it kind of goes on from there,

0:29:50 > 0:29:51and they take it personally.

0:29:51 > 0:29:53Some officers really take that personally.

0:29:53 > 0:29:57Everybody standing here, they'll tell you I didn't do nothing.

0:31:00 > 0:31:03from across the country that have been caught on camera.

0:31:05 > 0:31:08It makes you wonder how many incidents must happen

0:31:08 > 0:31:10which don't get filmed and never come to light.

0:31:10 > 0:31:12Stop resisting!

0:31:12 > 0:31:15- Get your hands behind your back! - Stop resisting!

0:31:49 > 0:31:53These police officers are not being held accountable.

0:32:10 > 0:32:14who do not have our best interests in mind.

0:32:14 > 0:32:18We feel that the community has the power to take care of ourselves.

0:32:21 > 0:32:25Not for gang banging, it's not for robbing, it's not for selling crack.

0:32:25 > 0:32:29It's for, "Hey, if I can't find food, I can go hunting.

0:32:29 > 0:32:31"If someone is coming to try and kick on my door

0:32:31 > 0:32:33"and do a home invasion,

0:32:33 > 0:32:35"I can defend the babies that's in the house."

0:32:35 > 0:32:37We have a universal sign,

0:32:37 > 0:32:40the X, two fists in the air crossing each other.

0:32:46 > 0:32:49I suppose, if there's bunches of white folks who are watching,

0:32:49 > 0:32:53who see you guys here out and armed, some of them might be alarmed.

0:32:53 > 0:32:54They should not be alarmed,

0:32:54 > 0:32:57but I can definitely understand their reaction.

0:32:57 > 0:32:59When they portray a black criminal in the news,

0:32:59 > 0:33:03they portray him as the lowest, wicked, inhumane person possible.

0:33:03 > 0:33:05But when they portray white criminals,

0:33:05 > 0:33:09they're portrayed as still someone humane who just made a bad judgment.

0:33:09 > 0:33:12So I definitely understand, growing up here

0:33:12 > 0:33:13in the United Snakes of America,

0:33:13 > 0:33:16why a white person would feel intimidated by seeing us.

0:33:16 > 0:33:20Because when they see us with guns, they think boys in the hood.

0:33:20 > 0:33:25You know? Instead of thinking black deacons of defence.

0:33:25 > 0:33:27Instead of thinking Black Panther Party.

0:34:07 > 0:34:10- Let's go!- Whose street? - Our street!

0:34:10 > 0:34:12- Whose street?- Our street!

0:34:12 > 0:34:13- Whose street?- Our street!

0:34:13 > 0:34:17And they've started to attract the attention of the police.

0:34:17 > 0:34:20Can you understand why the police would be slightly nervous

0:34:20 > 0:34:23- about your presence?- No, we've done over 400 manoeuvres here like this

0:34:23 > 0:34:24in the city of Dallas.

0:34:24 > 0:34:28If the police attempt to derail us, and we feel threatened,

0:34:28 > 0:34:31we'll take an offensive position.

0:34:31 > 0:34:33What does an offensive position mean?

0:34:33 > 0:34:35Offensive position means we'll be prepared to defend ourselves

0:34:35 > 0:34:37if necessary. If they choose to cross their line,

0:34:37 > 0:34:40we will defend ourselves.

0:34:40 > 0:34:45Our beef with them is them pushing institutional racism.

0:34:45 > 0:34:48You know, just like driving. You know, driving while black.

0:34:48 > 0:34:52When I'm in my vehicle, and when I see a police officer, I cringe.

0:34:52 > 0:34:57Literally. It's literally like how seeing an alligator in the swamp,

0:34:57 > 0:34:59and you're in the swamp and that's how I live.

0:34:59 > 0:35:02As the gun club fanned out,

0:35:02 > 0:35:05it was my first opportunity to see how people react

0:35:05 > 0:35:08to an armed black militia.

0:35:08 > 0:35:12Black Power. One nation under God.

0:35:12 > 0:35:13- Too strong!- Too black, too strong.

0:35:13 > 0:35:15- Too black, too strong. - Too black, too strong.

0:35:15 > 0:35:18Can I ask you what you thought seeing all those folks?

0:35:18 > 0:35:21I don't know, it's scary. It's scary. Shit.

0:35:21 > 0:35:25Could be a massacre out here, if it gets stupid.

0:35:25 > 0:35:27It's a race war and we know that.

0:35:27 > 0:35:33- I feel uneasy.- Really? Why?- As soon as I turned round and saw them.

0:35:33 > 0:35:35I have kids over here.

0:35:35 > 0:35:37There's a place for it, but this is not it.

0:35:37 > 0:35:39All kind of people do it all the time.

0:35:39 > 0:35:41You see white folks with their guns and protesting,

0:35:41 > 0:35:44so why can't black people protest peacefully?

0:35:44 > 0:35:46Hey, I love them.

0:35:46 > 0:35:47They protected my son's school

0:35:47 > 0:35:50when he went to school in downtown Dallas.

0:35:50 > 0:35:53They do more than just walk around rallying,

0:35:53 > 0:35:56they feed the community too, and I'm very proud of that.

0:35:56 > 0:35:58They're giving knowledge about the guns,

0:35:58 > 0:36:00because now you know it's open carry, a lot of people don't know

0:36:00 > 0:36:02if we can have guns to protect ourselves or not.

0:36:02 > 0:36:05I'm handing out gun laws, squad information

0:36:05 > 0:36:10and then how to act when you are approached by officers.

0:36:10 > 0:36:12We're targets. It's good to know different things.

0:36:12 > 0:36:14We think that we have to answer every question they ask,

0:36:14 > 0:36:16"Where are you going, why are you going there?"

0:36:16 > 0:36:18We feel like we have to answer that - we don't have to.

0:36:18 > 0:36:20First thing to ask, "Am I being detained?

0:36:20 > 0:36:22"No? All right, then, I'm walking off."

0:36:22 > 0:36:24There's a lot of our young men going to jail behind something

0:36:24 > 0:36:28they truly could've avoided just by knowing their rights.

0:36:28 > 0:36:30So how do people react when you give them this?

0:36:58 > 0:37:00Arm yourself, defend yourself!

0:37:00 > 0:37:03The people I met on the street said that Black Power

0:37:03 > 0:37:05shouldn't be seen as a threat.

0:37:05 > 0:37:08They said it's not a call for black supremacy,

0:37:08 > 0:37:10but a cry for black equality.

0:37:20 > 0:37:21We have them all over.

0:37:21 > 0:37:23We're an example of the black family,

0:37:23 > 0:37:27not of just the black militant man or the black militant culture.

0:37:27 > 0:37:29But this culture is for the black family.

0:37:29 > 0:37:32LA was marching with the gun club.

0:37:32 > 0:37:34He's one person who still thinks

0:37:34 > 0:37:36he can change the system from the inside.

0:37:36 > 0:37:39What next for you? I mean, it's the beginning of 2016.

0:37:39 > 0:37:42- What does the future hold? - It doesn't change, man.

0:37:42 > 0:37:46My everyday life as a barber is rotating information

0:37:46 > 0:37:49and getting young people in and feeding them the information,

0:37:49 > 0:37:50getting it from the elders,

0:37:50 > 0:37:53getting it from the community and feeding it back.

0:37:53 > 0:37:55Every client is an opportunity.

0:38:35 > 0:38:37All the way to the working-class black man,

0:38:37 > 0:38:40all the way to the working-class white man.

0:38:43 > 0:38:47The KKK may be the poster boys for white supremacy in America,

0:38:47 > 0:38:51but many of the black Americans I met felt little direct threat

0:38:51 > 0:38:54from the hooded men lighting crosses in the woods.

0:38:54 > 0:38:58Instead, to them, white supremacy is a system of oppression

0:38:58 > 0:39:03that stretches through politics, education, the prisons, the economy,

0:39:03 > 0:39:07but most obviously, through policing.

0:39:07 > 0:39:10The police force is where a country's civic institutions

0:39:10 > 0:39:12meet its population.

0:39:12 > 0:39:16And when law-abiding members of society live in fear of the police

0:39:16 > 0:39:18that are meant to be protecting them,

0:39:18 > 0:39:21it's hard to see how things can carry on as they are.
