0:00:19 > 0:00:20Ah, no.

0:00:20 > 0:00:24..that began 800 years ago.

0:00:24 > 0:00:26Thank you very much, father.

0:00:30 > 0:00:32My kilt!

0:00:32 > 0:00:34...serving the poor...

0:00:34 > 0:00:36What would St Francis think of our friends?

0:00:36 > 0:00:38He would love them to bits.

0:00:38 > 0:00:41..and praying at least five hours a day.

0:00:41 > 0:00:42It's not that much.

0:00:42 > 0:00:44We want to pray more.

0:00:44 > 0:00:47If they weren't busy enough, they're also striving to bring

0:00:47 > 0:00:49an empty Catholic Church back to life.

0:00:49 > 0:00:52It needs some work, but we're working on it.

0:00:52 > 0:00:55God willing, it will open.

0:00:55 > 0:01:00In the lead up to Easter, can the brothers pull it off?

0:01:14 > 0:01:15Leroy.

0:01:15 > 0:01:18He is living rough.

0:01:18 > 0:01:21I had to chase him off the step last week so

0:01:21 > 0:01:23people could get into the church, you know.

0:01:23 > 0:01:24He just wanted five more minutes.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27You know, it sounds like us in the morning, you know.

0:01:27 > 0:01:29"Just five more minutes!"

0:01:29 > 0:01:32I don't know how they do it, wrap themselves in a blanket

0:01:32 > 0:01:34and then sleep on the step.

0:01:34 > 0:01:35All night, it's like...

0:01:35 > 0:01:38Wow.

0:01:38 > 0:01:39It's complicated.

0:01:39 > 0:01:42Think you've got it figured out?

0:01:42 > 0:01:43No.

0:01:43 > 0:01:46Are you going to wake him up, Father Gabriel?

0:01:46 > 0:01:49Come on, you've got this nice jam sandwich, nice hot coffee.

0:01:49 > 0:01:53Who wouldn't want to be woken up to that?

0:01:53 > 0:01:54Leroy?

0:01:54 > 0:01:56What?

0:01:56 > 0:01:58It's Brother Joshua.

0:01:59 > 0:02:00What were you doing?

0:02:00 > 0:02:03Were you hiding?

0:02:03 > 0:02:04You know you can't sleep here.

0:02:04 > 0:02:08There's people coming into church.

0:02:10 > 0:02:13Yeah.

0:02:13 > 0:02:15All right.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18Leroy's had an accident, so we're going to get him

0:02:18 > 0:02:19some new clothes.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21You can go in there, Leroy.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24Jesus said, right, if you do it to the least of my brothers,

0:02:24 > 0:02:25you did it to me and...

0:02:25 > 0:02:26That's it.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29He's one of the least of his brothers, so...

0:02:29 > 0:02:31Yeah, I asked for the grace to be loving and not judgmental.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33Leroy?

0:02:33 > 0:02:36Here, your clean trousers.

0:02:49 > 0:02:52Being a Franciscan, I gave up everything to be with Jesus

0:02:52 > 0:02:55and Leroy comes with that.

0:02:55 > 0:02:57And I find Jesus in these people.

0:02:57 > 0:03:03HE YAWNS LOUDLY

0:03:03 > 0:03:06I have nightmares about the past.

0:03:06 > 0:03:09Buckled belts, bars, sticks, bamboo sticks,

0:03:09 > 0:03:11throwing me down to the cellar.

0:03:11 > 0:03:12I've been through hell, me.

0:03:12 > 0:03:16A lot of crap.

0:03:23 > 0:03:2630 years ago, the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal

0:03:26 > 0:03:29were founded in the Bronx, New York.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32Their ranks now come from all over the world to follow the teachings

0:03:32 > 0:03:38of Saint Francis, a 13th-century friar and preacher.

0:03:38 > 0:03:40The expanding order set up St Pio Friary

0:03:40 > 0:03:44in Bradford 12 years ago.

0:03:44 > 0:03:46The superior here is Canadian National

0:03:46 > 0:03:47Father Gabriel.

0:03:47 > 0:03:50So, a little tour here.

0:03:50 > 0:03:52This is my room.

0:03:52 > 0:03:55Austerity and minimum necessary.

0:03:55 > 0:03:59That's it, simple as.

0:03:59 > 0:04:03So we're given a couple of changes of our habit.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06It's got a hood.

0:04:06 > 0:04:08It's in the shape of a cross.

0:04:08 > 0:04:10We don't have a belt, but we've got a rope

0:04:10 > 0:04:12and there's three knots on the rope

0:04:12 > 0:04:14and they represent the vows that we take.

0:04:14 > 0:04:18One is poverty, chastity and obedience.

0:04:18 > 0:04:19And our rosary.

0:04:19 > 0:04:21This is our prayer beads.

0:04:21 > 0:04:23Francis was a knight.

0:04:23 > 0:04:25You always carried your sword on your left-hand side

0:04:25 > 0:04:30so your right hand could grab the sword quickly.

0:04:30 > 0:04:32Can't hurt anybody with this, but it's the way

0:04:32 > 0:04:36that we fight the real battles in life, with prayer and with love

0:04:36 > 0:04:39for people's good, so...

0:04:39 > 0:04:42That's our weapon.

0:04:42 > 0:04:43I have nothing.

0:04:43 > 0:04:44I gave it all up.

0:04:44 > 0:04:47Here we are.

0:04:47 > 0:04:51I'll show you where I put the stuff I don't have.

0:04:51 > 0:04:54So, this is my wardrobe here on the back of the door.

0:04:54 > 0:04:55You never have to decide

0:04:55 > 0:04:59what you are going to wear in the morning.

0:04:59 > 0:05:00Ta-dah!

0:05:00 > 0:05:04This, my friend, is contraband.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07HE LAUGHS

0:05:07 > 0:05:10It's an MP3 player and we're technically...

0:05:10 > 0:05:12We're not supposed to have it and I'm going to ask

0:05:12 > 0:05:15special permission so I can use it.

0:05:15 > 0:05:17It just helps me to learn songs off the Internet.

0:05:17 > 0:05:20We try to do without as much technology as we can

0:05:20 > 0:05:26so we can live really simple.

0:05:26 > 0:05:29Over the centuries, Franciscans have targeted areas

0:05:29 > 0:05:33to live among and serve the poor.

0:05:33 > 0:05:37St Pio continues that tradition.

0:05:37 > 0:05:39Their soup kitchen opens twice a week and today,

0:05:39 > 0:05:43it's Brother Joshua's turn to do the cooking.

0:05:43 > 0:05:45Some brothers prefer to make home-made.

0:05:45 > 0:05:46Some brothers prefer to make the tins.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49I like home-made soup.

0:05:49 > 0:05:50There is a very secret ingredient

0:05:50 > 0:05:53that makes all the difference.

0:05:53 > 0:05:56We're going to have at least 60, 70 people here to enjoy our

0:05:56 > 0:06:05wonderful food in God's beautiful paradise in Bradford.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07This is a donation from a local supermarket.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10Every little thing in our life, God provides for.

0:06:10 > 0:06:17And without God, we can't do anything.

0:06:17 > 0:06:18With the friary relying on donated food,

0:06:18 > 0:06:20ingredients aren't always to hand.

0:06:20 > 0:06:22Improvisation is the order of the day.

0:06:22 > 0:06:24The first time I did tomato soup with rice pudding,

0:06:24 > 0:06:25it was a huge hit.

0:06:25 > 0:06:27And everyone kept asking me what was in the soup.

0:06:27 > 0:06:32I told them and they wouldn't eat any more!

0:06:32 > 0:06:35You have the sugar and the milk, which gives it a creamy texture,

0:06:35 > 0:06:37and the rice just thickens it up.

0:06:37 > 0:06:39I don't have rice, but I have rice pudding,

0:06:39 > 0:06:43so I can put the rice pudding in.

0:06:43 > 0:06:45BLENDER WHIRRS

0:06:48 > 0:06:52A civilian army of volunteers help the brothers keep on track

0:06:52 > 0:06:55for a late morning opening.

0:06:55 > 0:06:59In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

0:06:59 > 0:07:01OK.

0:07:01 > 0:07:03The soup kitchen welcomes an average of 80 people

0:07:03 > 0:07:04at every sitting...

0:07:04 > 0:07:06Good morning.

0:07:06 > 0:07:07Martin, you're on the cooker.

0:07:07 > 0:07:10..all with different backgrounds and needs.

0:07:10 > 0:07:12You make friends, you know.

0:07:12 > 0:07:15Instead of staying in the house 24 hours.

0:07:15 > 0:07:16I just like company.

0:07:16 > 0:07:21I come with my granddaughter and my great-granddaughter.

0:07:21 > 0:07:22Yes.

0:07:22 > 0:07:24Coming to see me?

0:07:24 > 0:07:25Come on.

0:07:25 > 0:07:26There you are.

0:07:26 > 0:07:27This is Kayla.

0:07:27 > 0:07:30She's one of our VIP members and it's really great for us

0:07:30 > 0:07:32just to share in the family life.

0:07:32 > 0:07:34How was the soup?

0:07:34 > 0:07:35It was all right, lovely.

0:07:35 > 0:07:39But we like your chicken and sweetcorn better.

0:07:39 > 0:07:42The soup flipping went down well, didn't it?

0:07:42 > 0:07:43I mean, it's the rice pudding.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46It's got to be!

0:07:46 > 0:07:49But primarily, St Pio caters for the vulnerable,

0:07:49 > 0:07:53like Tony who's sleeping rough.

0:07:57 > 0:07:58Sometimes it's that cold, it's unbelievable

0:07:58 > 0:08:00and you can never understand the British weather,

0:08:00 > 0:08:02can you, really?

0:08:02 > 0:08:07I have a sleeping bag and necessary equipment

0:08:07 > 0:08:10to keep me warm that the friars have supplied for me, yeah.

0:08:10 > 0:08:15And I put that away in a safe place until I need it.

0:08:17 > 0:08:22Tony has a deep love for Saint Patrick's.

0:08:22 > 0:08:27He used to serve, I believe, as an altar server.

0:08:27 > 0:08:31He still lingers here as much as possible.

0:08:31 > 0:08:36It takes him out of a difficult living situation.

0:08:36 > 0:08:39I used to take heroin, but not any more.

0:08:39 > 0:08:41I haven't touched that for 11 years now.

0:08:41 > 0:08:44I was taking crack cocaine and that, yeah.

0:08:48 > 0:08:49Yes, thank you, sir.

0:08:49 > 0:08:53Thank you very much.

0:08:53 > 0:08:56If it wasn't for the friars, there is a very good possibility

0:08:56 > 0:08:57I'd be dead now, anyway.

0:08:57 > 0:09:01A very good possibility.

0:09:02 > 0:09:03Good to see you.

0:09:03 > 0:09:04Thanks for the company.

0:09:04 > 0:09:05Take care.

0:09:05 > 0:09:07Thank you.

0:09:07 > 0:09:11God bless you.

0:09:11 > 0:09:14The brothers don't just serve the poor.

0:09:14 > 0:09:18They cater for the devout as well.

0:09:18 > 0:09:20With the people of Bradford's inner-city increasingly from another

0:09:20 > 0:09:25faith, the fortunes of Catholicism and Saint Patrick's Church

0:09:25 > 0:09:28have been tested in recent years.

0:09:28 > 0:09:30I think there's only four or five Catholics

0:09:30 > 0:09:33in the region of the parish.

0:09:33 > 0:09:35People come from outside the city and they love to come,

0:09:35 > 0:09:38even if they have to travel.

0:09:38 > 0:09:42It's because the demographic has changed so much in the city,

0:09:42 > 0:09:45so we're reaching out and we're here to stay in Bradford

0:09:45 > 0:09:49and we're here to grow.

0:09:49 > 0:09:53We're using our friary chapel for the Saint Patrick's

0:09:53 > 0:09:59congregation, because we're waiting in hopeful anticipation for the

0:09:59 > 0:10:01opening of the church next door to hear that's been closed

0:10:01 > 0:10:05for a number of years for repairs.

0:10:08 > 0:10:11You ready?

0:10:11 > 0:10:15Welcome to Saint Patrick's.

0:10:17 > 0:10:19To see Saint Patrick's full again would be a sign

0:10:19 > 0:10:24that Catholicism is alive and well in the heart of Bradford.

0:10:24 > 0:10:29A well-loved parish of many, many generations of people here.

0:10:29 > 0:10:32It was built by Irish immigrants.

0:10:32 > 0:10:39Needs some work, but we're working on it.

0:10:41 > 0:10:44Lots of hope, lots of potential.

0:10:44 > 0:10:46You can see, there's lots of old plasterwork

0:10:46 > 0:10:50that needs to be redone.

0:10:50 > 0:10:56Stained-glass window to Saint Francis, our patron saint.

0:10:56 > 0:10:58Someone was trying to break into the church

0:10:58 > 0:11:02and they were starting to kick through Saint Francis' window here,

0:11:02 > 0:11:05but he held the line.

0:11:05 > 0:11:07They couldn't get in.

0:11:07 > 0:11:10So Saint Francis is looking after Saint Patrick's still.

0:11:10 > 0:11:15It will be a great day when we can gather around the altar again,

0:11:15 > 0:11:18as so many generations of Catholics have done before.

0:11:18 > 0:11:22Yeah, it's going to be beautiful when it's done.

0:11:25 > 0:11:29It was really, really a lovely community.

0:11:29 > 0:11:33My three sons all went to the school.

0:11:33 > 0:11:38It were the first time that our boys went into long pants.

0:11:38 > 0:11:41Two of them were married here.

0:11:41 > 0:11:44We met through the church.

0:11:44 > 0:11:47This is our anchor, really, isn't it?

0:11:47 > 0:11:50We sat on the second row there.

0:11:50 > 0:11:52We knew within a short time

0:11:52 > 0:11:55that we wanted to spend our lives together.

0:11:55 > 0:11:59We're longing for it to be opened again.

0:11:59 > 0:12:02We formed a committee.

0:12:02 > 0:12:06And I'm sorry to say that there is only four

0:12:06 > 0:12:10in this picture that are still alive.

0:12:10 > 0:12:13Oh, that was when I was in my 20s.

0:12:13 > 0:12:17In young and foolish days.

0:12:17 > 0:12:20The church was packed on a Sunday.

0:12:20 > 0:12:22And all the people that were there that we knew,

0:12:22 > 0:12:27I'd go dancing with the night before, but then never miss Mass.

0:12:27 > 0:12:30I think them years were the happiest times of our lives.

0:12:30 > 0:12:34Such a beautiful, big community.

0:12:38 > 0:12:39What have you lads got me into?

0:12:39 > 0:12:44We live for this, man.

0:12:44 > 0:12:46The soup kitchen and the friars themselves are

0:12:46 > 0:12:49totally dependent on the generosity of the people of Bradford.

0:12:49 > 0:12:51I just have a reasonably sized allotment,

0:12:51 > 0:12:53plus a lot of the lads on the allotments,

0:12:53 > 0:12:54they give me stuff as well,

0:12:54 > 0:12:56because they know where it all goes.

0:12:56 > 0:12:57I'll just...

0:12:57 > 0:12:58I'll have to move my car.

0:12:58 > 0:12:59There it is!

0:12:59 > 0:13:02The gift of God.

0:13:02 > 0:13:05This is kind of a before picture and this is an after picture.

0:13:05 > 0:13:06What can I say?

0:13:06 > 0:13:07It's just coming down.

0:13:07 > 0:13:11Coming down, man!

0:13:18 > 0:13:20I've got a photograph of when I was a baby.

0:13:20 > 0:13:22About 14 months old.

0:13:22 > 0:13:25I grew up in Manchester.

0:13:25 > 0:13:27I liked Manchester City.

0:13:27 > 0:13:29I used to go to the games.

0:13:29 > 0:13:32When I was seven years old, my parents split up,

0:13:32 > 0:13:36so that was pretty...

0:13:36 > 0:13:40rough for me, you know what I mean?

0:13:40 > 0:13:42Around 11 or 12, I started getting into stealing,

0:13:42 > 0:13:46robbing people's houses.

0:13:46 > 0:13:49Part of it was because I didn't have a father.

0:13:49 > 0:13:51You know, you need that structure.

0:13:51 > 0:13:53This was when I was a teenager.

0:13:53 > 0:13:55I was growing my hair out.

0:13:55 > 0:13:59So that is me and my mother.

0:13:59 > 0:14:01I liked getting off my head on drugs.

0:14:01 > 0:14:03I liked women.

0:14:03 > 0:14:06A lot of girls, a lot of women.

0:14:06 > 0:14:09Yeah, very promiscuous.

0:14:09 > 0:14:11Then I got into the acid house scene.

0:14:11 > 0:14:16Ecstasy and amphetamine and I got into cocaine.

0:14:16 > 0:14:18I was on it, man.

0:14:18 > 0:14:21I was raving, it was what I lived for.

0:14:21 > 0:14:24I was living with a girl at the time.

0:14:24 > 0:14:28I was assaulted outside a snooker hall in Stockport.

0:14:28 > 0:14:31I had multiple haemorrhages in my brain.

0:14:31 > 0:14:33Thank God I survived.

0:14:33 > 0:14:36Probably about seven months after that, I woke up.

0:14:36 > 0:14:38I just had a...

0:14:38 > 0:14:41An experience with God.

0:14:41 > 0:14:44You know, that he was present and he was really

0:14:44 > 0:14:48drawing me back to himself.

0:18:01 > 0:18:04He's also got something in his hood.

0:18:04 > 0:18:07We all have different roles within the friary.

0:19:20 > 0:19:23"I just want to leave this job."

0:19:23 > 0:19:25And so I left quite happily.

0:19:25 > 0:19:27And now, 20-something years later,

0:19:27 > 0:19:31here I am looking after the finances.

0:19:31 > 0:19:33One of my little pieces of joy.

0:19:33 > 0:19:34It's a necessary evil.

0:19:34 > 0:19:38Don't get me into the theology of that!

0:19:38 > 0:19:42But it just needs doing, especially as we're a registered charity.

0:19:42 > 0:19:47Saint Francis would have never done this.

0:19:47 > 0:19:50Through your son, Jesus Christ.

0:19:50 > 0:19:53Since the middle ages and well before any state benefits,

0:19:53 > 0:19:59Franciscans have been living among and serving Europe's vulnerable.

0:19:59 > 0:20:03People like Henrietta, who hails from Slovakia

0:20:03 > 0:20:05and now lives on Bradford's streets.

0:20:05 > 0:20:06So what are you doing today, Hen?

0:20:06 > 0:20:07What's going on?

0:20:13 > 0:20:14Yes.

0:20:14 > 0:20:15No, you know we don't...

0:20:15 > 0:20:17You know we don't give you money.

0:20:17 > 0:20:18We don't give anybody money, Henrietta.

0:20:24 > 0:20:25Like...

0:20:25 > 0:20:28Help them in the best way you can instead of just

0:20:28 > 0:20:29throwing things at them.

0:20:29 > 0:20:30SHE LAUGHS

0:20:30 > 0:20:33I'm going to give you just some warm clothes,

0:20:33 > 0:20:34OK?

0:20:34 > 0:20:35Is that OK?

0:20:35 > 0:20:36No!

0:20:36 > 0:20:37Huh?

0:20:37 > 0:20:38No.

0:20:38 > 0:20:39No?

0:20:39 > 0:20:40Hmm...

0:20:40 > 0:20:41Yeah?

0:20:41 > 0:20:42No.

0:20:42 > 0:20:44It's nice to be able to just give them something practical,

0:20:44 > 0:20:47even if you haven't been able to solve all their problems.

0:20:47 > 0:20:50It's a little bit beyond us, most of the time.

0:20:50 > 0:20:51Father, for myself!

0:20:51 > 0:20:53You want this one, yeah?

0:20:53 > 0:20:54Yes!

0:20:54 > 0:20:57Would you like the gloves to go with it?

0:20:57 > 0:20:58That looks nice together.

0:20:58 > 0:20:59No.

0:20:59 > 0:21:01OK.

0:21:01 > 0:21:04We would choose what clothes we would like to wear as well.

0:21:04 > 0:21:06Something that is an expression of their dignity.

0:21:06 > 0:21:08It is part of serving them as a person.

0:21:08 > 0:21:09These!

0:21:09 > 0:21:14Henrietta, come on.

0:21:14 > 0:21:15Oh, there you go.

0:21:15 > 0:21:17God bless you.

0:21:17 > 0:21:20Bless you.

0:21:23 > 0:21:25So, did City win?

0:21:25 > 0:21:26I think they drew.

0:21:26 > 0:21:27Did they?

0:21:27 > 0:21:28Yeah, they drew.

0:21:28 > 0:21:30At least Nottingham Forest got a win in

0:21:30 > 0:21:32at the weekend, which was nice.

0:21:32 > 0:21:36I'll pray for your family and all of your intentions today, OK?

0:21:36 > 0:21:38I'm in the soup kitchen.

0:21:38 > 0:21:4117, on drugs, yeah.

0:21:41 > 0:21:44Sometimes people call us for prayer, and this was a woman

0:21:44 > 0:21:46asking for her grandson.

0:21:46 > 0:21:53Yeah, I'll just keep it in my heart as I'm serving the beans and soup.

0:21:53 > 0:21:54You can pray on the run, too.

0:21:54 > 0:21:57Working with the poor is not, like, this romantic, idealistic thing.

0:21:57 > 0:21:59It's gritty, it's messy.

0:21:59 > 0:22:02If you want to do this for the long haul, you've got to be willing

0:22:02 > 0:22:03to forgive and keep loving.

0:22:03 > 0:22:05Just see them as God sees them.

0:22:05 > 0:22:09And dealing with the poor brings constant challenges

0:22:09 > 0:22:10for the friars.

0:22:10 > 0:22:11Today's no exception.

0:22:11 > 0:22:14A lot of the people who come to the soup kitchen

0:22:14 > 0:22:16are using the fella's garden as a toilet.

0:22:16 > 0:22:20Which is not the best situation, you know what I mean?

0:22:20 > 0:22:22If you're desperate, you've got nowhere to go.

0:22:22 > 0:22:24So obviously, the lad's not too happy.

0:22:24 > 0:22:31Like he wasn't yesterday.

0:22:31 > 0:22:35It's just a case of if there is some sort of message you can pass out.

0:22:35 > 0:22:37This has been going on, please stop.

0:22:37 > 0:22:38Bless you.

0:22:38 > 0:22:38All right, mate.

0:22:38 > 0:22:39Thanks a lot.

0:22:39 > 0:22:40Take care.

0:22:40 > 0:22:41Thank you, officer.

0:22:41 > 0:22:43So, it is a result, isn't it?

0:22:43 > 0:22:48Less stress.

0:22:48 > 0:22:51He said he'd pick anything up if anything happens in the future.

0:22:51 > 0:22:57I like that line!

0:22:57 > 0:22:59As the loyal congregation gather from all over Bradford,

0:22:59 > 0:23:03there's news on the restoration of Saint Patrick's Church.

0:23:03 > 0:23:05Well, good news.

0:23:05 > 0:23:09The parish received ?50,000 towards the refurbishment

0:23:09 > 0:23:12of the church and the diocese will be making a sizeable contribution

0:23:12 > 0:23:17towards the restoration.

0:23:17 > 0:23:19I've been trying to keep the vision alive for them,

0:23:19 > 0:23:22reminding them of what we're doing and the progress,

0:23:22 > 0:23:24the little progress that's being made.

0:23:24 > 0:23:28Isn't this good about the church?

0:23:28 > 0:23:29Isn't it good about the church?

0:23:29 > 0:23:31Oh, excellent.

0:23:31 > 0:23:33It will demand a little celebration today.

0:23:33 > 0:23:39That's it.

0:23:40 > 0:23:42With the long-term renovation looking positive,

0:23:42 > 0:23:45Father Gabriel's focusing on the short-term,

0:23:45 > 0:23:47by hatching a plan with the local parish priest

0:23:47 > 0:23:51to celebrate the day dedicated to the church's namesake,

0:23:51 > 0:23:54which is just weeks away.

0:23:54 > 0:23:57So...

0:23:57 > 0:24:01We've got to do something for Saint Paddy's day.

0:24:01 > 0:24:05Even if we can get them in there, I think it would give them a boost.

0:24:05 > 0:24:07But I think it will also make them even more eager

0:24:07 > 0:24:09to get it up and running again.

0:24:09 > 0:24:12Have a look in the church at maybe where we can put Saint Patrick.

0:24:12 > 0:24:14That would be awesome.

0:24:14 > 0:24:18Is it too much to have it, like, somewhere up here?

0:24:18 > 0:24:21I don't think so, because it's only going to be

0:24:21 > 0:24:22a temporary thing, isn't it?

0:24:22 > 0:24:23Yeah.

0:24:23 > 0:24:25It will bring back a lot of memories.

0:24:25 > 0:24:26Yeah.

0:24:26 > 0:24:28It's important in a church which is dedicated

0:24:28 > 0:24:33to Saint Patrick to do something on Saint Patrick's Day.

0:24:33 > 0:24:35If we say that there will be opportunity to look round

0:24:35 > 0:24:37the church, I think...

0:24:37 > 0:24:40I think quite a lot of people will want to come.

0:24:40 > 0:24:41Yeah.

0:24:44 > 0:24:48CHATTER

0:24:48 > 0:24:54There was a very big presence of Irish people in Bradford.

0:24:54 > 0:24:55There was the mills, of course, and people

0:24:55 > 0:24:59came over for work.

0:24:59 > 0:25:01But they didn't have a Catholic Church,

0:25:01 > 0:25:05so they decided to build one.

0:25:05 > 0:25:08Irish immigrants...

0:25:08 > 0:25:11Six pences, pennies got the churchgoing.

0:25:11 > 0:25:12Unbelievable.

0:25:12 > 0:25:14Brick by brick.

0:25:14 > 0:25:17Where did they get the money from?

0:25:17 > 0:25:18Oh...

0:25:18 > 0:25:21Everybody went mad on Saint Patrick's Day.

0:25:21 > 0:25:24Saint Patrick's Day was green!

0:25:24 > 0:25:26They'd come to mass here and they'd all wear shamrocks,

0:25:26 > 0:25:33which were sent over from Ireland.

0:25:33 > 0:25:37You'd have to come early to get a seat if you wanted a seat.

0:25:37 > 0:25:38All the pubs were alive.

0:25:38 > 0:25:40They all got drunk on Guinness and then...

0:25:40 > 0:25:42SHE LAUGHS

0:25:42 > 0:25:45..the priest many a time used to join them.

0:25:45 > 0:25:48Getting ready, going to the Saint Patrick's dance.

0:25:48 > 0:25:50Yeah.

0:25:50 > 0:25:54Happy days.

0:26:07 > 0:26:10I said a prayer to help me wake up.

0:26:10 > 0:26:11Otherwise, I think, left to my own resources,

0:26:11 > 0:26:15I might still have been in bed.

0:26:15 > 0:26:18It's the best bit of the day, it's worth getting up for.

0:26:18 > 0:26:21It's the bit when I encounter the one I want most.

0:26:21 > 0:26:24God.

0:26:24 > 0:26:27ALL: Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for our sins.

0:26:27 > 0:26:29Amen.

0:26:29 > 0:26:31Know that he, the Lord, is God.

0:26:31 > 0:26:32He made us.

0:26:32 > 0:26:33We belong to him.

0:26:33 > 0:26:35# Hear his word and...#

0:26:35 > 0:26:38Being with the Lord for the first couple of

0:26:38 > 0:26:40hours of the day really gives you the strength

0:26:40 > 0:26:42for the rest of the day, really.

0:26:42 > 0:26:43To serve the Lord.

0:26:43 > 0:26:45Serve him and the poor especially.

0:26:45 > 0:26:49Set prayers, five different times during the day.

0:26:49 > 0:26:51INTERVIEWER: How many hours is that of prayer?

0:26:51 > 0:26:53Six or seven, something like that?

0:26:53 > 0:26:56That's a lot of prayer for a day.

0:26:56 > 0:26:58Yeah!

0:26:58 > 0:27:02Couldn't do it without it.

0:27:02 > 0:27:04I enjoy the morning hours, the solitude.

0:27:04 > 0:27:07The meditation period.

0:27:07 > 0:27:09Quite wonderful to watch the light come into the world

0:27:09 > 0:27:12and to rise with it.

0:27:12 > 0:27:16It takes you all the way through with the one who loves you

0:27:16 > 0:27:19to turn your thoughts and your heart to him.

0:27:29 > 0:27:32# Those who dwell in the shadow of death

0:27:32 > 0:27:36# And guide us into the way of peace

0:27:50 > 0:27:54I need to speak to the Lord, I need to hear him speak to me,

0:27:54 > 0:27:55to have that relationship.

0:27:55 > 0:27:57Otherwise I'm not going to be a friar.

0:27:57 > 0:27:58I'd just be a...

0:27:58 > 0:28:03I don't know, I'd be a social worker helping poor people.

0:28:03 > 0:28:07We want to pray more.

0:28:09 > 0:28:12It's kind of the centre of our day, the mass.

0:28:12 > 0:28:16Crescendo after the morning meditation and common prayer.

0:28:16 > 0:28:20In the Eucharist, we receive his body and blood.

0:28:20 > 0:28:23It looks like bread and it tastes like bread,

0:28:23 > 0:28:26it looks like wine and it tastes like wine,

0:28:26 > 0:28:30but the very essence of it is Christ Jesus.

0:28:30 > 0:28:32It's his body and blood.

0:28:32 > 0:28:35That's what we're living as Friars, too.

0:28:35 > 0:28:41Where he gives everything and we give everything.

0:28:44 > 0:28:48It's not easy to keep this out of your beard.

0:28:49 > 0:28:55Many of their neighbours may be Muslim

0:28:55 > 0:28:57but when the friars take trips into Bradford,

0:28:57 > 0:28:59they're happy to meet, greet and talk to people

0:28:59 > 0:29:01of all faiths and none.

0:29:01 > 0:29:04Everybody has the right to hear the gospel.

0:29:04 > 0:29:06Yeah, they're missing out if they don't hear

0:29:06 > 0:29:09about God's love for them.

0:29:09 > 0:29:11This guy!

0:29:11 > 0:29:15And it's not about forcing it on them, or making an imposition,

0:29:15 > 0:29:17but it's really like, "Let me tell you what the Lord did,"

0:29:17 > 0:29:19and then they can decide.

0:29:19 > 0:29:20Good.

0:29:20 > 0:29:21How are you?

0:29:35 > 0:29:37had if I was walking through the street dressed

0:29:37 > 0:29:38like a normal person.

0:29:38 > 0:29:42People want to stop and say hello, we kind of let that be an open door.

0:29:55 > 0:29:57Do you receive any funding or support from

0:29:57 > 0:29:58the Government whatsoever?

0:29:58 > 0:29:59None.

0:29:59 > 0:30:02People are very generous with us, and you don't want to take that

0:30:02 > 0:30:04for granted because it comes from God.

0:30:04 > 0:30:05You're welcome, bro.

0:30:17 > 0:30:20God bless you guys.

0:30:20 > 0:30:23Spreading the word is an experience of receiving a gift, not something

0:30:23 > 0:30:26that being imposed on them.

0:30:26 > 0:30:29And they were free to say yes or no.

0:31:12 > 0:31:14"You're going where?

0:31:14 > 0:31:18You don't have any money, you don't have a job and you're

0:31:18 > 0:31:21going to beg for your food, you're going to live on the floor,

0:31:21 > 0:31:24sleep on the floor and you're going to live in the ghetto?

0:31:24 > 0:31:26In New York City, of all places, in Harlem?

0:31:26 > 0:31:27Oh, my gosh!"

0:31:27 > 0:31:30When the brothers first visited my family, my dad said

0:31:30 > 0:31:36it was like 12 Apostles walking up the driveway.

0:31:36 > 0:31:38He didn't know what was coming.

0:31:38 > 0:31:40Just sat around, "What you want to drink?"

0:31:44 > 0:31:46It became real for my parents.

0:31:46 > 0:31:48It wasn't like, "My son has gone to join

0:31:48 > 0:31:50a bunch of whacks in New York."

0:31:50 > 0:31:52That was the beginning of them warming up

0:31:55 > 0:32:00# You lead me home. #

0:32:04 > 0:32:08It's not just the soup kitchen which relies on donations.

0:32:08 > 0:32:10The friars need essentials, too, and the asking

0:32:10 > 0:32:14falls to Father Conrad.

0:32:14 > 0:32:17We call it begging.

0:32:17 > 0:32:22So that we have that sense that the poor would have.

0:32:26 > 0:32:29Katie, I was going to ask you for milk.

0:33:01 > 0:33:03I don't see it as begging.

0:33:03 > 0:33:05They're lovely people, they've taken a vow of poverty

0:33:05 > 0:33:09and I want to do whatever I can to help them.

0:33:09 > 0:33:11So what other things do you beg for?

0:33:11 > 0:33:14Well, everything from soup to nuts, as they say.

0:33:14 > 0:33:16If you can think of it, we need it.

0:33:16 > 0:33:18Do you beg for loo paper as well?

0:33:18 > 0:33:22Oh, yes.

0:33:22 > 0:33:23Hello, are you Christine?

0:33:23 > 0:33:25Yes.

0:33:29 > 0:33:30Oh, wonderful.

0:33:30 > 0:33:32You know we always consider you first after the children.

0:33:32 > 0:33:34Beyond my expectations.

0:33:34 > 0:33:37Very generous, wonderful gift.

0:33:37 > 0:33:39One of the basics of life.

0:33:39 > 0:33:41More than I anticipated!

0:33:41 > 0:33:44More than the cow can give.

0:33:44 > 0:33:48We do freeze some.

0:33:48 > 0:33:49This is amazing.

0:33:49 > 0:33:55But it's not quite large enough to hold all this.

0:33:55 > 0:33:59Having too much of anything is contrary to the friars' beliefs.

0:33:59 > 0:34:02Sometimes, they need a type of religious spring clean.

0:34:02 > 0:34:04Good morning.

0:34:04 > 0:34:06Of everything they've been given.

0:34:06 > 0:34:08Saint Francis encouraged his brothers to live

0:34:08 > 0:34:13without anything in the world.

0:34:13 > 0:34:15And today we're going to look at whether we've taken

0:34:15 > 0:34:18anything on that's extra.

0:34:18 > 0:34:20With guidance laid out in the order's constitution,

0:34:20 > 0:34:21it is termed a poverty check.

0:34:25 > 0:34:28Do we have any thing in the friary which is superfluous or unnecessary

0:34:28 > 0:34:34for our life and work?

0:34:34 > 0:34:37Everything in Brother Joshua's room.

0:34:37 > 0:34:41This also applies to furniture.

0:34:41 > 0:34:44So any extra furniture that we can liquidate.

0:34:44 > 0:34:47That armchair I brought down from the loft, not our style.

0:34:47 > 0:34:50No offence, but it looks like grandmother's living room style -

0:34:50 > 0:34:54floral print, you know?

0:34:54 > 0:34:56Anything else?

0:34:56 > 0:35:00The CDs and DVDs, some of them definitely want to go.

0:35:00 > 0:35:05Unless anybody really wants to watch RoboCop!

0:35:05 > 0:35:09So, kitchen.

0:35:09 > 0:35:12Tell me what we want, what we don't want.

0:35:12 > 0:35:15This guy, cool.

0:35:15 > 0:35:20This is the giveaway section.

0:35:23 > 0:35:26They love you so much that they give you things.

0:35:26 > 0:35:29Sometimes the gifts they give you, you know, are not useful.

0:35:29 > 0:35:30Ice cream scoopers.

0:35:30 > 0:35:32Which one do we prefer?

0:35:32 > 0:35:34On a couple of occasions...

0:35:34 > 0:35:35We did that.

0:35:35 > 0:35:41..friars have given back to somebody what they gave to us.

0:35:41 > 0:35:43That's the one to get rid of.

0:35:43 > 0:35:45"Master of Disaster" on.

0:35:45 > 0:35:46OK, Roger that.

0:35:46 > 0:35:48Let's just go to the library.

0:35:50 > 0:35:52Chickens As Pets.

0:35:52 > 0:35:55I don't know if we want to keep that.

0:36:10 > 0:36:14I think it's helpful to have some commentary on trees

0:36:14 > 0:36:19and birds and animals.

0:36:19 > 0:36:20These are good, these poverty checks.

0:36:20 > 0:36:22You can get a lot of superfluous stuff,

0:36:22 > 0:36:25and it's always books and clothes.

0:36:25 > 0:36:27You just find you stick them in the corner

0:36:27 > 0:36:29and just stick more in the corner.

0:36:29 > 0:36:31Next thing you know, you've got a flipping library,

0:36:31 > 0:36:33you know what I mean?

0:36:33 > 0:36:37Poverty check, the journey continues.

0:36:43 > 0:36:45Hope it's not too hot.

0:36:45 > 0:36:48So how does a friar who owns nothing maintain a lifelong passion?

0:36:48 > 0:36:50It's a conundrum.

0:36:50 > 0:36:52But tucked away on the friary's rooftop,

0:36:52 > 0:36:57Brother Benedict seems to have found a way.

0:37:00 > 0:37:00Wow.

0:37:00 > 0:37:03Here we are.

0:37:03 > 0:37:06These are all carnivorous plants.

0:37:06 > 0:37:12They eat insects, flies, stuff like that.

0:37:12 > 0:37:15Think it was a lad when I was about 12,

0:37:15 > 0:37:18he had them on his porch.

0:37:18 > 0:37:19That's how I got into them.

0:37:19 > 0:37:24The rest of them are in the polytunnel.

0:37:24 > 0:37:26This is it.

0:37:26 > 0:37:28Yes!

0:37:28 > 0:37:32Once the insect comes on the lip, I mean, it's finished.

0:37:32 > 0:37:36When it falls down there, it's like a watery grave.

0:37:36 > 0:37:38Oh, they're beautiful.

0:37:38 > 0:37:42Obviously, because we take a vow of poverty, I don't have any money

0:37:42 > 0:37:44to buy any of these plants.

0:37:44 > 0:37:46I've grown a lot from seed.

0:37:46 > 0:37:49People have bought me them, like my mother.

0:37:49 > 0:37:51I mean, for my birthday or something, you know what I mean?

0:37:51 > 0:37:54To be perfectly honest with you, if I was told

0:37:54 > 0:37:55to get rid of these tomorrow,

0:37:55 > 0:37:57it wouldn't be that much of a sacrifice.

0:37:57 > 0:37:59There's more important things than flesh-eating plants,

0:37:59 > 0:38:03you know what I mean?

0:38:03 > 0:38:05That's it.

0:38:24 > 0:38:25Pie day.

0:38:25 > 0:38:27Oh, yeah.

0:38:29 > 0:38:30OK.

0:38:30 > 0:38:31Is that all right?

0:38:31 > 0:38:32Yeah.

0:38:32 > 0:38:35A special treat amongst the donations that we get.

0:38:35 > 0:38:36Why don't we put them in?

0:38:36 > 0:38:37Let's put them in.

0:38:37 > 0:38:38Yeah, put them in.

0:38:38 > 0:38:41Helping with the pies is the soup kitchen's longest serving volunteer,

0:38:46 > 0:38:49Just a love for, like, people and a willingness

0:38:49 > 0:38:54to go out of her way.

0:38:59 > 0:39:02Today, it's Sarah's turn to feel the love.

0:39:06 > 0:39:08I have to live on the streets.

0:39:08 > 0:39:09Very tired.

0:39:09 > 0:39:12Drained to the point where I've just gone...

0:39:12 > 0:39:15blank.

0:39:15 > 0:39:17Nowhere to turn.

0:39:17 > 0:39:20Never mind, you never know what's around the corner.

0:39:20 > 0:39:22Christine's a lovely lady and she said,

0:39:22 > 0:39:26"If you ever come to the friary, ask for Christine."

0:39:26 > 0:39:28So I've come to ask for Christine!

0:39:28 > 0:39:31She's going to see if she can get me a bed for the night.

0:39:31 > 0:39:34Sarah.

0:39:34 > 0:39:35It's great.

0:39:35 > 0:39:38As friars, we have a brotherly or a fatherly presence,

0:40:20 > 0:40:24The Lord did it 2,000 years ago, he can do it again here.

0:40:36 > 0:40:39Yeah, I'm just waiting for them to ring back.

0:40:39 > 0:40:45That's our Lady, the mother of Jesus.

0:40:45 > 0:40:47Obviously, when my mum died, I died, so now I'm an orphan.

0:40:47 > 0:40:48What happened to your mum?

0:40:48 > 0:40:50She died of lung cancer.

0:40:50 > 0:40:56I just spiralled out of control and here I am, out on the street.

0:40:56 > 0:40:57I felt like I had no-one.

0:40:57 > 0:40:59I'm a lost soul.

0:40:59 > 0:41:02I mean, there's no-one that's lost, really, because God has come down.

0:41:02 > 0:41:03That's the whole point of Jesus.

0:41:03 > 0:41:05You just need to find your path.

0:41:05 > 0:41:08Yeah, yeah.

0:41:08 > 0:41:12It's hard sometimes, especially now in the winter months,

0:41:12 > 0:41:17it's even worse for people, with it being so cold.

0:41:17 > 0:41:21So that means most places for the homeless get full.

0:41:21 > 0:41:23OK then, I'll have a chat with Sarah now.

0:41:29 > 0:41:32Just plod on, eh?

0:41:32 > 0:41:33Sorry, love.

0:41:33 > 0:41:34It's OK.

0:41:34 > 0:41:39OK then.

0:41:40 > 0:41:41I'm a tough cookie.

0:41:41 > 0:41:46I've got to be, I'm on my own.

0:41:46 > 0:41:48Yeah, if I wasn't strong, I wouldn't be here.

0:41:48 > 0:41:49Bye.

0:41:49 > 0:41:51See you.

0:42:02 > 0:42:08This is the bulletin of the last mass, and we were all in tears.

0:42:08 > 0:42:14We're hoping for a mass to be said on St Patrick's Day.

0:42:14 > 0:42:16I'd be over the moon.

0:42:16 > 0:42:18We'll have a big celebration.

0:42:18 > 0:42:22To see if that dream can come true, there's a meeting with the most

0:42:22 > 0:42:28powerful Catholic in West Yorkshire, the Bishop of Leeds.

0:42:28 > 0:42:32I mean, the bishop is really the shepherd of the flock here.

0:42:32 > 0:42:34We wouldn't be here if it wasn't for his invitation.

0:42:34 > 0:42:38Father Gabriel's got an ambitious proposal for St Patrick's Day

0:42:38 > 0:42:41that he wants to discuss.

0:42:41 > 0:42:45We're hoping to be able to not just have a little procession in and out

0:42:45 > 0:42:47of the church but to actually have the service, the mass

0:42:47 > 0:42:51in the church, which would be absolutely fantastic.

0:42:51 > 0:42:58You know, we're talking about marking St Patrick's Day this year.

0:42:58 > 0:43:03There was thought of, could we have the mass in the church?

0:43:03 > 0:43:05Be wonderful if we could have the mass, I agree.

0:43:05 > 0:43:09Symbolically, it would be wonderful.

0:43:09 > 0:43:13But we obviously must comply with health and safety regulations.

0:43:13 > 0:43:16It may not prove to be possible.

0:43:16 > 0:43:20In principle, I have no objection.

0:43:23 > 0:43:25It's not my intention to preside over decline.

0:43:25 > 0:43:29I became a bishop to make Christ known and to build up the Christian

0:43:29 > 0:43:33community in this city, and indeed across the diocese.

0:43:36 > 0:43:38Just a word of thanks for your prayers.

0:43:38 > 0:43:40The meeting with the bishop went very, very well.

0:43:40 > 0:43:42So things are on the up and up.

0:43:42 > 0:43:44We're just...

0:43:44 > 0:43:46cruising, you know?

0:43:46 > 0:43:48So pray for the friars, because we're on this...

0:43:48 > 0:43:55You know, "Hold on, we're going!"

0:43:55 > 0:43:56Hi, Susan.

0:43:56 > 0:43:58Hello.

0:43:58 > 0:43:59Real good news, isn't it?

0:43:59 > 0:44:01Just on the up and up and up.

0:44:01 > 0:44:04Do you think we might have a service on St Patrick's Day?

0:44:04 > 0:44:05Yeah, well, I couldn't say it publicly,

0:44:05 > 0:44:07but that's what we're praying for.

0:44:07 > 0:44:09We're talking to the health and safety at the diocese,

0:44:09 > 0:44:12we're hoping to get in the church.

0:44:12 > 0:44:13It will be special.

0:44:13 > 0:44:15I know it is.

0:44:15 > 0:44:18She's great.

0:44:18 > 0:44:21Praise the Lord, man.

0:44:23 > 0:44:26Part of the commitment to their way of life means the friars

0:44:26 > 0:44:31are obliged to live together in what is termed a brotherhood.

0:44:31 > 0:44:33For Father Conrad, a friar of 40 years' standing,

0:44:33 > 0:44:36this comes with certain parameters.

0:44:36 > 0:44:39When you live in some kind of community,

0:44:39 > 0:44:44it increases your possibility of becoming a charitable person.

0:44:44 > 0:44:46The thing is, obviously all of you are men living

0:44:46 > 0:44:49together as well, Father.

0:44:49 > 0:44:55There have been communities that have both men and women in them.

0:44:55 > 0:44:59I am of the understanding that they are genuinely

0:44:59 > 0:45:04tried by their experience because if you have a man

0:45:04 > 0:45:07who is in charge of a convent full of women, or you have a nun

0:45:07 > 0:45:13who is in charge of a monastery full of men, it doesn't take too much

0:45:13 > 0:45:17to figure out that there's going to be a problem.

0:45:17 > 0:45:22I love our sisters, but I am glad they live in the next town!

0:45:31 > 0:45:33Sometimes when you see your guitar sitting there,

0:45:33 > 0:45:40you just have to pick it up.

0:45:40 > 0:45:42Evening time for the brothers -

0:45:42 > 0:45:48an opportunity to kick back and relax.

0:45:48 > 0:45:50I just love the fraternal dimension.

0:45:50 > 0:45:55Like, the laughing and joking and the brotherhood.

0:45:55 > 0:45:58It's a happy thought that the Lord has called me

0:45:58 > 0:46:02to spend my life with these guys, because these are good men.

0:46:02 > 0:46:06That's why the grey hairs are coming!

0:46:06 > 0:46:11Shall I sing No Woman, No Cry?

0:46:11 > 0:46:14He's got another groove going on.

0:46:14 > 0:46:17HARMONICA TRILL

0:46:17 > 0:46:18Oh, that's an amazing sound, man.

0:46:18 > 0:46:21Oh!

0:46:27 > 0:46:29It's great when it happens spontaneously.

0:46:29 > 0:46:33You know, just one of the brothers picks up the guitar and you hear it

0:46:33 > 0:46:35down the hall and you're like, "Get me in there,

0:46:35 > 0:46:40there's a groove there."

0:46:40 > 0:46:42Who needs television when you've got this?

0:46:42 > 0:46:45We decided not to have TV in the friary because we thought

0:46:45 > 0:46:47it would take away from our fraternal life

0:46:47 > 0:46:48and our life of prayer.

0:46:48 > 0:46:55I haven't watched TV probably in...

0:46:55 > 0:47:05Like, really watched TV in maybe like 15 years, 20 years.

0:47:06 > 0:47:09It pushes you to be creative about how you spend your time together.

0:47:22 > 0:47:25THEY LAUGH

0:47:25 > 0:47:26That was so good.

0:47:26 > 0:47:32There you go.

0:47:35 > 0:47:40So this is our stuff we poverty checked the other day.

0:47:40 > 0:47:42See if any of our people need it.

0:47:42 > 0:47:43Probably not the knives, though.

0:47:43 > 0:47:46We're going to keep the knives out in case they want to use it

0:47:46 > 0:47:47for something other than cooking.

0:47:47 > 0:47:50What about the ice cream scoop?

0:47:50 > 0:47:53I don't know, we'll see who wants it.

0:47:58 > 0:48:01Usually, if you just lay it out, they come right in

0:48:01 > 0:48:03and take it if they need it.

0:48:03 > 0:48:06I don't know if they'll need all these hangers

0:48:06 > 0:48:08the brothers cleared from their property check.

0:48:08 > 0:48:11No sense hanging onto it here.

0:48:11 > 0:48:13OK.

0:48:13 > 0:48:20Looks like some kind of book cover.

0:48:20 > 0:48:22I'm just assessing its junkitude.

0:48:22 > 0:48:24You know, people bring junk and get this attitude like,

0:48:24 > 0:48:25"Well, they'll use it."

0:48:25 > 0:48:26You know?

0:48:26 > 0:48:28Would you want that?

0:48:28 > 0:48:29Throw it out!

0:48:29 > 0:48:30We don't want that.

0:48:30 > 0:48:31Even the poor don't want that.

0:48:31 > 0:48:36Nobody wants junk.

0:48:38 > 0:48:39Only going to be thrown away, isn't it?

0:48:39 > 0:48:44You know, take it home and use it.

0:48:46 > 0:48:50I've got a cooker, but it's not working.

0:48:53 > 0:48:54Sarah's back.

0:48:54 > 0:48:56Soup kitchen volunteer Christine's been desperate

0:48:56 > 0:48:59to find her a bed in a hostel.

0:48:59 > 0:49:01And there's news.

0:49:01 > 0:49:03Oh, did she?

0:49:03 > 0:49:07Oh, I like happy ending.

0:49:07 > 0:49:08Bye now, bye.

0:49:08 > 0:49:11She's got a place.

0:49:11 > 0:49:12I'm pleased for Sarah!

0:49:12 > 0:49:14Yeah, that's awesome.

0:49:14 > 0:49:16Christine got me a place you can actually sleep.

0:49:16 > 0:49:18You don't have to sleep with one eye open.

0:49:18 > 0:49:22So, yeah, you don't have to keep looking over your shoulder.

0:49:29 > 0:49:30She looks better today.

0:49:30 > 0:49:33She looks happier, doesn't she, today?

0:49:33 > 0:49:35I'm really chuffed.

0:49:35 > 0:49:38Now do you mind if I get on with my washing up?

0:49:38 > 0:49:41Looks like some of our items have gone that we poverty checked.

0:49:41 > 0:49:45The ice cream scoop is gone.

0:49:45 > 0:49:46Which is a good sign, they're enjoying life,

0:49:46 > 0:49:48they're having ice cream too.

0:49:48 > 0:49:52So praise God for that.

0:49:56 > 0:49:57Today's an important moment in deciding

0:49:57 > 0:50:07whether a mass will be held in St Patrick's Church.

0:50:07 > 0:50:09At the moment, the only obstacle is health and safety.

0:50:09 > 0:50:10Welcome to England.

0:50:10 > 0:50:12A meeting's been scheduled next week to decide

0:50:12 > 0:50:15whether it is fit for that purpose.

0:50:15 > 0:50:17But first church supporter Matt Campbell is on a fact-finding

0:50:17 > 0:50:21mission to report back to that meeting.

0:50:21 > 0:50:24We just need to move stuff like this so that if somebody

0:50:24 > 0:50:26does bump against it, it is unlikely to fall.

0:50:26 > 0:50:30I came to assess, before I meet with the diocese office,

0:50:30 > 0:50:33that the building is fundamentally safe.

0:50:33 > 0:50:36Slips, trips, falls, the risks for that.

0:50:36 > 0:50:39And that we have identified what we need to move

0:50:39 > 0:50:44in order to avoid any risk of accident happening.

0:50:44 > 0:50:47We'd consider cordoning off, possibly, at the end

0:50:47 > 0:50:51of the back pillar so that people can come in here, safely.

0:50:51 > 0:50:54But the floor is equally sound there, I think, generally.

0:50:54 > 0:50:56We will go through all of the risk assessments

0:50:56 > 0:50:59and any of the other public safety type stuff.

0:50:59 > 0:51:00OK, good.

0:51:00 > 0:51:03Here's hoping.

0:51:03 > 0:51:09Not a done deal.

0:51:09 > 0:51:12As everyone waits for the health and safety meeting and a decision,

0:51:12 > 0:51:16Father Gabriel's appealing to a higher authority.

0:51:16 > 0:51:20But even before the building is restored, Jesus,

0:51:20 > 0:51:22let this be a place of light, a place of welcome.

0:51:22 > 0:51:27It would be awesome to have a mass in here on St Patrick's Day.

0:51:27 > 0:51:31God is going to answer our prayers, whether it's yes, no or later.

0:51:31 > 0:51:34It will be an answer.

0:51:34 > 0:51:42Jams are good, prayer jams are even better.

0:51:42 > 0:51:46Thank you for the plans you have for this place, Jesus.

0:51:46 > 0:51:49To make it a place of light, a place of truth.

0:51:49 > 0:51:50There's no...

0:51:50 > 0:51:53No bricks falling on us yet.

0:51:53 > 0:51:58You know, these Yorkshire people are ruddy.

0:51:58 > 0:52:03They can handle the dusty pews and the cold.

0:52:03 > 0:52:05Lord, let the poor find a place of the richness

0:52:05 > 0:52:07of your love here, Lord.

0:52:07 > 0:52:08If it happens, it happens.

0:52:08 > 0:52:12If not, we're going to keep praying.

0:52:12 > 0:52:18# My spirit rejoices in God, the saviour... #

0:52:36 > 0:52:39PHONE RINGS

0:52:39 > 0:52:41Hello, Father Gabriel speaking.

0:52:41 > 0:52:43They've given us the green light.

0:52:43 > 0:52:44Green for go.

0:52:44 > 0:52:45Wow!

0:52:45 > 0:52:46Which is brilliant.

0:52:46 > 0:52:49Praise God.

0:52:49 > 0:52:54The bishop has given permission to have mass

0:52:54 > 0:52:57on St Patrick's Day in the church.

0:52:57 > 0:53:01We need to help setting up the statue of Saint Patrick in there.

0:53:01 > 0:53:03The probation services are going to come and clean

0:53:03 > 0:53:06the church and sort it out with the pews and everything.

0:53:06 > 0:53:12But bundle up, it's not going to be heated as normal, of course.

0:53:12 > 0:53:14Isn't it great about St Patrick's?

0:53:14 > 0:53:16Put your big coat on!

0:53:16 > 0:53:17We'll just wrap up.

0:53:17 > 0:53:20Might be warmer by then.

0:53:20 > 0:53:22Don't forget, the holy spirit is there and everything.

0:53:22 > 0:53:23You know?

0:53:23 > 0:53:29Yes!

0:53:29 > 0:53:33We'll be done on Friday, when we're here, serving Saint Patrick.

0:53:36 > 0:53:40Things are looking more like a church in here

0:53:40 > 0:53:44than a building site.

0:53:45 > 0:53:46I wouldn't say anything,

0:53:46 > 0:53:55but he is lighter than what St Francis was!

0:53:55 > 0:53:59Saint Patrick hasn't aged since I was here before.

0:53:59 > 0:54:01He's probably been pining to come back.

0:54:01 > 0:54:02Yeah, I know.

0:54:02 > 0:54:05Yeah.

0:54:09 > 0:54:12For Susan, opening the church for St Patrick's Day mass

0:54:12 > 0:54:17is the first step in her longer term plans.

0:54:17 > 0:54:19God willing, it will open.

0:54:19 > 0:54:23I imagine a couple of years or something like that.

0:54:23 > 0:54:29I hope I can last, because I'm hoping to have my funeral there!

0:54:35 > 0:54:43I feel very blessed and humbled, just grateful, really grateful.

0:54:44 > 0:54:49The history of St Patrick's is a bit of a metaphor for the Easter story.

0:54:49 > 0:54:51Or the Christian faith, you know?

0:54:51 > 0:54:55That life comes through death.

0:54:55 > 0:54:57You know, death isn't the end of the story,

0:54:57 > 0:55:04isn't the last word, but life is the last word.

0:55:13 > 0:55:15It's going to be a cold church,

0:55:15 > 0:55:17so I'm putting the legs on my shorts.

0:55:17 > 0:55:19Actually, those blower heaters in there, they look promising

0:55:19 > 0:55:22but they don't do much!

0:55:22 > 0:55:25I haven't decided if I'm going to put socks on yet.

0:55:25 > 0:55:28Socks and sandals just don't really work for me.

0:55:30 > 0:55:31We're bringing this church back.

0:55:31 > 0:55:33It's not dying.

0:55:33 > 0:55:34It's good.

0:55:34 > 0:55:35It's a beautiful Easter story.

0:55:35 > 0:55:38There's life coming.

0:55:38 > 0:55:41It's also a sign of hope for the people that we serve

0:55:41 > 0:55:44in the soup kitchen, who been coming here for 12 years

0:55:44 > 0:55:46to get a bowl of super and a plate of beans.

0:55:46 > 0:55:48Like, never give up hope.

0:55:48 > 0:55:50You give them a high viz jacket, they come into their own.

0:55:50 > 0:55:53It's a lot of responsibility as well, isn't it?

0:55:53 > 0:55:556 or 12 months ago, I wouldn't have even dreamt

0:55:55 > 0:55:57of doing a responsible thing like looking after cars,

0:55:57 > 0:55:59I wouldn't have been trusted to do that.

0:55:59 > 0:56:03Giving something back and being appreciated and accepted.

0:56:03 > 0:56:07Not accepted for being an addict, being accepted as a person.

0:56:09 > 0:56:13They're such a visible presence, their long beards and their long

0:56:13 > 0:56:16grey habits, people immediately say, "Who are these guys?"

0:56:16 > 0:56:18In many ways, they are returning to

0:56:18 > 0:56:19a more ancient tradition in the church,

0:56:19 > 0:56:23of being in the service of the local community.

0:56:23 > 0:56:25Because before the Reformation, most of what we now call

0:56:25 > 0:56:29social services were provided by the religious orders

0:56:29 > 0:56:33like the Franciscan Friars.

0:56:33 > 0:56:35It's properly one of the best St Patrick's Days

0:56:35 > 0:56:37I will have ever experienced.

0:56:37 > 0:56:40It's just such a proper joyful day.

0:56:40 > 0:56:45During Lent, that doesn't happen too often!

0:56:45 > 0:56:46Almost there.

0:56:46 > 0:56:51We're vested and ready to go.

0:56:52 > 0:56:58In green for Saint Patrick!

0:56:58 > 0:57:00Long time since I've been in here, isn't it?

0:57:00 > 0:57:02It is a long time.

0:57:02 > 0:57:04The doors are open again.

0:57:04 > 0:57:07That's my dream!

0:57:07 > 0:57:11Seen the church packed, wow!

0:57:11 > 0:57:13This is what the old Saint Patrick's used to be.

0:57:13 > 0:57:15I could feel tears in the back of my eyes.

0:57:15 > 0:57:18A little bit of heaven in there.

0:57:18 > 0:57:24And I'm sure Saint Patrick will be smiling down on us all today.

0:57:24 > 0:57:28THE CONGREGATION SINGS A HYMN

0:57:37 > 0:57:39This is, in a sense,

0:57:39 > 0:57:42a lovely anticipation of the joy of Easter.

0:57:42 > 0:57:47Coming to new life from something that was believed dead.

0:57:47 > 0:57:54This place, it looks tired now, it is going to be beautiful again.

0:57:54 > 0:57:58We're not going to have just stepped back into the darkness quietly.

0:57:58 > 0:58:02BELL RINGS

0:58:02 > 0:58:05We started in a battered building next door,

0:58:05 > 0:58:08and now the church is being opened.

0:58:08 > 0:58:10The whole site is coming back to life,

0:58:10 > 0:58:13and we've been a big part of that.

0:58:13 > 0:58:15This is us.

0:58:15 > 0:58:17The Friary is here to stay.

0:58:17 > 0:58:20And we're really happy about that.

0:58:20 > 0:58:21Yeah, it's great.

0:58:21 > 0:58:28We don't want anything else.

0:58:28 > 0:58:29We're on the next level now.

0:58:29 > 0:58:31We're pushing out into the deep,

0:58:31 > 0:58:33really going fishing for the big ones.

0:58:33 > 0:58:38Yeah, we're going all the way, man.

0:58:38 > 0:58:42Hot coffee, tea, something to warm up.

0:58:42 > 0:58:45I just forgot to invite people to the reception!

0:58:45 > 0:58:49Tea and coffee, refreshments in the Friary on the right.

0:58:49 > 0:58:51Don't you think they're lovely?

0:58:51 > 0:58:55Absolutely.

0:58:55 > 0:58:56They're really wonderful, aren't they?
