0:01:50 > 0:01:52This is a fuel tank.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55The cap's missing and somebody's just put a plastic bag in.

0:02:00 > 0:02:01From the heart of London,

0:02:01 > 0:02:04the A1 stretches nearly 400 miles north,

0:02:04 > 0:02:08through rural Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire, past the industrial

0:02:08 > 0:02:10heartlands of Leeds and Newcastle,

0:02:10 > 0:02:14before finally ending in the city of Edinburgh.

0:02:14 > 0:02:16On the section just north of Newcastle,

0:02:16 > 0:02:19evening rush hour traffic is starting to build.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24A1 patrol officer PC Alan Keenleyside

0:02:24 > 0:02:28has stopped to investigate a heavy goods vehicle with Spanish plates.

0:02:28 > 0:02:32It's pulled over on the side of the road and is causing

0:02:32 > 0:02:34a dangerous obstruction.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37- HORN BLARES - What's wrong?- No, no. Two minutes.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39I go.

0:02:39 > 0:02:40This is not a place to stop.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42- No, I go.- Now.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44- Yes.- OK.

0:02:44 > 0:02:46- OK.- Let me see your chart.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49The driver's tachograph reveals that she's reached the maximum

0:02:49 > 0:02:53number of driving hours allowed before taking a break.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55You've been driving all day.

0:02:58 > 0:03:00You should have stopped one, two miles up the road.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03But as Alan advises the driver about her rest break,

0:03:03 > 0:03:07another HGV pulls up.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10And the driver's eager to talk to Alan.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17All right, boss. No worries. Cheers, buddy. Thank you.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19And another driver has also seen the accident.

0:03:19 > 0:03:21Whereabouts?

0:03:24 > 0:03:27A pile up in rush hour traffic is serious.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35POLICE SIREN

0:03:36 > 0:03:38Alan needs to get there quickly.

0:03:42 > 0:03:44To be perfectly honest,

0:03:44 > 0:03:48it's now quarter past five on a Monday afternoon.

0:03:48 > 0:03:50Couldn't happen at a worse time.

0:03:50 > 0:03:54Multi-car crashes often result in casualties,

0:03:54 > 0:03:56but Alan's hoping for the best.

0:03:56 > 0:04:01The ideal scenario is when we get here is nobody's seriously injured,

0:04:01 > 0:04:05the vehicles aren't particularly badly damaged,

0:04:05 > 0:04:07we can get everything moved.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10The level of injury at the scene isn't confirmed at the minute.

0:04:10 > 0:04:12But ambulances have been asked for.

0:04:12 > 0:04:14It's these people going about their business,

0:04:14 > 0:04:16probably coming home from work,

0:04:16 > 0:04:19to see their families and their loved ones,

0:04:19 > 0:04:21and all of a sudden, they've left work,

0:04:21 > 0:04:24they don't think they're going to be involved in something big like this.

0:04:24 > 0:04:26There's a car in a tree, down the ditch.

0:04:26 > 0:04:29This is really, really key in people's lives.

0:04:29 > 0:04:31These are life-changing events.

0:04:35 > 0:04:36When Alan arrives at the scene,

0:04:36 > 0:04:39it's clear that he's dealing with a major accident.

0:04:50 > 0:04:52We've got a car over there with some serious damage.

0:04:57 > 0:04:59Got a Land Rover here.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03And two vehicles, three vehicles here, so quite a sizeable scene.

0:05:05 > 0:05:07With several injured motorists,

0:05:07 > 0:05:11vehicles and debris everywhere, and rush hour traffic thundering

0:05:11 > 0:05:13past, this job will push Alan to the limit.

0:05:18 > 0:05:23This is just one of more than 320 serious accidents that happen

0:05:23 > 0:05:25on the A1 every year.

0:05:25 > 0:05:27And it's the job of traffic officers,

0:05:27 > 0:05:30as well as the police, to deal with them.

0:05:30 > 0:05:34In Doncaster, two are about to head out on the early shift.

0:05:38 > 0:05:42It's 6:30am and Paul Day and Rob Larkin will be patrolling one

0:05:42 > 0:05:44of the busiest sections of the road.

0:05:44 > 0:05:46Turn them all on. All off.

0:05:46 > 0:05:48Yeah.

0:05:49 > 0:05:53And it's not long before they have a major collision to deal with.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57- RADIO:- 'Just hearing about a few problems on the A1.

0:05:57 > 0:05:59'Looks like we could have accident involving at least

0:05:59 > 0:06:01'a couple of vehicles on the southbound side,

0:06:01 > 0:06:05'it's now slowing to queue there, so looks like we could have a problem.'

0:06:05 > 0:06:09What we've got reports of is a multi-vehicle crash,

0:06:09 > 0:06:11so we're heading south to attend it.

0:06:11 > 0:06:14Four cars have piled into each other and, with rush hour traffic

0:06:14 > 0:06:16hurtling towards them at 70mph,

0:06:16 > 0:06:20Paul and Rob know the stranded road users are in danger.

0:06:22 > 0:06:25We'll stop traffic, we'll see if anybody's injured,

0:06:25 > 0:06:27make sure everybody's OK.

0:06:27 > 0:06:30We try and get everything back to normal as quickly as possible,

0:06:30 > 0:06:34- but as safely as possible as well. - There you go.

0:06:34 > 0:06:36Is it there?

0:06:36 > 0:06:39Yeah, lane two's blocked.

0:06:39 > 0:06:42Even though the accident has only just happened,

0:06:42 > 0:06:44traffic is already starting to build.

0:06:44 > 0:06:48One three, lane two's currently blocked. At the location given.

0:06:48 > 0:06:52Paul and Rob need to get back down the other carriageway quickly,

0:06:52 > 0:06:56but the northbound section is also virtually at standstill.

0:06:56 > 0:06:58Look at that traffic.

0:06:59 > 0:07:02Fortunately, help is at hand. SIREN

0:07:02 > 0:07:05That should make it a little bit easier for us.

0:07:05 > 0:07:09What's good here is police attending gives forward traffic

0:07:09 > 0:07:10a way of moving out of the way.

0:07:10 > 0:07:12Cos they've got blue lights and sirens.

0:07:16 > 0:07:20- Within a few minutes, Rob and Paul are on the scene.- We're here now.

0:07:20 > 0:07:23You want to stop everybody from that blue wagon?

0:07:26 > 0:07:29The damaged vehicles are blocking a whole lane.

0:07:29 > 0:07:32And the drivers are stood perilously in the middle of the road.

0:07:32 > 0:07:36HE WHISTLES With traffic still flowing past,

0:07:36 > 0:07:39they're in serious danger of being knocked down.

0:07:39 > 0:07:43I've got traffic stopped with code six. Police on scene.

0:07:48 > 0:07:52Having removed the vehicles safely from the carriageway...

0:07:52 > 0:07:55One three, all vehicles cleared of the lane two now.

0:07:55 > 0:07:58..Paul and Rob can reopen one of the lanes.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03A lane one close is better than a lane two.

0:08:03 > 0:08:07So that's what we've done, is put a lane one out.

0:08:07 > 0:08:10Now he needs to make sure the drivers are OK.

0:08:13 > 0:08:16- How are you? - Shaking like a leaf, to be honest.

0:08:16 > 0:08:19Are you? You're all right. Can you tell us what happened?

0:08:19 > 0:08:21Right, so, big queue of cars in front of me.

0:08:21 > 0:08:25They all sort of suddenly stopped. I've managed to stop.

0:08:25 > 0:08:29But then just felt this car come straight into the back of me.

0:08:29 > 0:08:33Um, and then, it was almost instant, bang, bang, bang.

0:08:33 > 0:08:35Everything happened all at once.

0:08:35 > 0:08:36- I felt it.- Did you?- Yeah.

0:08:36 > 0:08:39Shaking a bit. Are you all right? Are you warm enough?

0:08:39 > 0:08:42- I'm all right, yeah.- You sure? Got a coat in your car?

0:08:42 > 0:08:44- I'm fine, honest.- Sure?

0:08:45 > 0:08:48Even with just one lane closed,

0:08:48 > 0:08:52the usual A1 traffic flow is halved and tailbacks are building fast.

0:08:54 > 0:08:57It's vital that Rob and Paul get the drivers and their damaged

0:08:57 > 0:09:01vehicles safely off the hard shoulder and open the whole

0:09:01 > 0:09:03carriageway as quickly as possible.

0:09:03 > 0:09:06I bet this is going back at least ten mile, this traffic.

0:09:06 > 0:09:09This could take all day to clear.

0:09:09 > 0:09:10The pressure is on.

0:09:10 > 0:09:14Can Paul and Rob get traffic moving before the repercussions

0:09:14 > 0:09:15reverberate for hours to come?

0:09:21 > 0:09:24For most people, a traffic jam simply means frustration.

0:09:25 > 0:09:30But in Warwickshire, a 200 mile journey is about to begin,

0:09:30 > 0:09:33where delays on the Great North Road will really mean someone

0:09:33 > 0:09:35getting the hump.

0:09:40 > 0:09:43Very curious animals.

0:09:43 > 0:09:46They like to know what's happening, what's going on.

0:09:46 > 0:09:47But that's a good thing really.

0:09:47 > 0:09:50You can always tell if an animal's happy, that they're curious,

0:09:50 > 0:09:52they want to see and look around.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57The Fossett family have eight camels.

0:09:57 > 0:10:02And tonight, three of their finest are the star attraction in Durham

0:10:02 > 0:10:06City's Nativity, giving the Three Kings a ride to see Baby Jesus.

0:10:07 > 0:10:10Right, hang on. Hang on.

0:10:10 > 0:10:13They'll just go straight to the food and then I'll tie them up

0:10:13 > 0:10:16once they're there.

0:10:16 > 0:10:18No, no, no. You've got one each. Go on.

0:10:21 > 0:10:25This is Kazak. Kazak's going today and also, we're taking Max.

0:10:25 > 0:10:27This is a young camel, Max.

0:10:27 > 0:10:29And Kokoso, you can't miss Kokoso.

0:10:29 > 0:10:33You're the best camel in the world, aren't you, Kokoso? Yes!

0:10:33 > 0:10:38But how do you persuade a camel to take a journey along the A1 highway?

0:10:38 > 0:10:40Max! Maxy!

0:10:40 > 0:10:41Maxy, come on!

0:10:41 > 0:10:43Max, don't disappear. There's a good boy.

0:10:45 > 0:10:48Max! Max!

0:10:50 > 0:10:52Where are you off to?

0:10:52 > 0:10:56You've got to be very patient with camels and very careful.

0:10:56 > 0:10:59It's no good trying to bully a camel,

0:10:59 > 0:11:01you've got to coax it into doing it.

0:11:01 > 0:11:02Come on.

0:11:02 > 0:11:04Good boy. Here you are.

0:11:04 > 0:11:05Look.

0:11:05 > 0:11:07Here you are.

0:11:09 > 0:11:11It's like people, isn't it? And children, you know?

0:11:11 > 0:11:13How you train your children

0:11:13 > 0:11:15is how they behave, isn't it?

0:11:20 > 0:11:22Kokoso, don't be barging!

0:11:22 > 0:11:24Back up, back up, back up.

0:11:28 > 0:11:31After travelling across the country, they'll face

0:11:31 > 0:11:36a 100 mile trip up the A1, so it could be a long and bumpy ride.

0:11:40 > 0:11:44Born into a circus family, Joseph spent a lifetime on the road,

0:11:44 > 0:11:47with all manner of weird and wonderful beasts.

0:11:49 > 0:11:54I've transported horses, elephants, I've transported lions down the A1.

0:11:54 > 0:11:56All sorts of different animals at different times.

0:11:56 > 0:11:58The rewards of being with the camels,

0:11:58 > 0:12:02because that's such a privilege, is so amazing. I mean, it's hard work.

0:12:02 > 0:12:05- Don't get me wrong. - And no day's ever the same.

0:12:05 > 0:12:07Yeah, it's not for the faint-hearted.

0:12:07 > 0:12:10With hundreds of spectators expected, and the camels the

0:12:10 > 0:12:14Nativity's star attraction, the Fossetts can't afford to be late.

0:12:14 > 0:12:18We allow a certain amount of time with a bit of wriggle room to

0:12:18 > 0:12:22get to where we're going but, you know, we have to be there on time.

0:12:22 > 0:12:26You can't kind of let the situation dominate you, if you like.

0:12:26 > 0:12:29So, I mean, the Highways is on speed dial on my phone.

0:12:32 > 0:12:36And they're only halfway to Durham when Rebecca spots trouble ahead.

0:12:36 > 0:12:42Oh, dear. That is not good. That's not good. Where's my phone?

0:12:42 > 0:12:44Time to get on to Highways England.

0:12:47 > 0:12:50Oh, hello. We're on the A1M, going north.

0:12:50 > 0:12:54We're just by Ferrybridge Services and we've seen a slow down incident.

0:12:54 > 0:12:55Can you tell us what's going on?

0:13:00 > 0:13:03With trouble looming ahead, and nearly 100 miles to go,

0:13:03 > 0:13:07Joseph and Rebecca may need their own Christmas miracle to make

0:13:07 > 0:13:09it to the Nativity on time.

0:13:18 > 0:13:19Whatever the cargo,

0:13:19 > 0:13:22hold-ups are a frustrating part of life on the motorway.

0:13:24 > 0:13:27While roadworks and congestion account for the majority of

0:13:27 > 0:13:30delays, accidents are the main cause of jams.

0:13:32 > 0:13:35Nearly 120 miles north of the Fossetts on the A1, near

0:13:35 > 0:13:40Gosforth in Newcastle, the rush hour has been brought to a standstill.

0:13:44 > 0:13:47A1 patrol officer PC Alan Keenleyside is still dealing

0:13:47 > 0:13:50with a multiple crash in the fast lane.

0:13:53 > 0:13:55- So, he's coming at speed. He's hit that one.- Yeah.

0:13:55 > 0:13:59- Which has then connected with either that one or that one.- That one.

0:14:00 > 0:14:03His priority is to get the injured driver seen to,

0:14:03 > 0:14:05now that the ambulance has arrived.

0:14:08 > 0:14:11The paramedics are seeing to the driver of the vehicle that's

0:14:11 > 0:14:13taken the biggest hit of them all really.

0:14:13 > 0:14:16I think the driver is going to be suffering typically of

0:14:16 > 0:14:17whiplash-type injuries.

0:14:17 > 0:14:20So we're going to put a neck collar on him and I imagine that

0:14:20 > 0:14:23driver will be going off to hospital to be properly looked at.

0:14:23 > 0:14:26The rear end of that vehicle, it's unrecognisable.

0:14:27 > 0:14:31The lady driving the Land Rover has been fortunate to have

0:14:31 > 0:14:32escaped unhurt.

0:14:40 > 0:14:41Yeah.

0:14:41 > 0:14:44But she witnessed the whole thing.

0:14:44 > 0:14:47Footage taken from her dashcam captured the terrifying

0:14:47 > 0:14:48moment of impact...

0:14:51 > 0:14:54..when congestion turned into a multicar collision.

0:14:55 > 0:14:58I was driving along, traffic was slowing down,

0:14:58 > 0:15:02I'm slowing down with the traffic. And then, it was a silver car,

0:15:02 > 0:15:05and then it smashed into the front of me.

0:15:11 > 0:15:14And then, next thing, that car ended up in the ditch.

0:15:16 > 0:15:19It was as if something off like a Hollywood film.

0:15:19 > 0:15:21Just chuck a car into the mix.

0:15:21 > 0:15:25The positive thing is I'm walking away, I'm OK.

0:15:25 > 0:15:27It's a car. I can replace the car.

0:15:27 > 0:15:29My baby wasn't in the car, luckily.

0:15:29 > 0:15:33Or that could have been very bad for my little boy.

0:15:33 > 0:15:36- With the injured drivers receiving treatment...- Come on, come on. OK.

0:15:36 > 0:15:38..the officers now need to get

0:15:38 > 0:15:41the road reopened as quickly as possible.

0:15:44 > 0:15:46We've got a clear front end impact

0:15:46 > 0:15:48with what we call vehicle number one.

0:15:48 > 0:15:51Cos that's the vehicle that we're looking at as potentially

0:15:51 > 0:15:54being responsible. But over there, we've got vehicle number two,

0:15:54 > 0:15:56which has taken a heavy impact.

0:16:03 > 0:16:05OK, would you like to follow over?

0:16:09 > 0:16:12Although police are trying to keep traffic moving,

0:16:12 > 0:16:15there's still dangerous wreckage strewn across the road.

0:16:16 > 0:16:18If we leave a bit of debris,

0:16:18 > 0:16:20a motorbike or car could see that debris,

0:16:20 > 0:16:24especially at night-time with the headlights, and they could actually

0:16:24 > 0:16:28swerve to avoid that debris, which could result in another collision.

0:16:28 > 0:16:31So we need to make sure when we clean the road that it's

0:16:31 > 0:16:33- cleaned properly. - But there's another problem.

0:16:33 > 0:16:36The crashed vehicles have also spilled fluid all over the

0:16:36 > 0:16:39- northbound carriageway. - It's mainly water,

0:16:39 > 0:16:42but there's a little bit of engine oil in it as well.

0:16:42 > 0:16:44It means that Alan has to hold up the whole of the southbound

0:16:44 > 0:16:49section, so that absorbent material can quickly be laid on the road.

0:16:49 > 0:16:52It'll only take about two or three minutes,

0:16:52 > 0:16:55so we need to get that absorbed to make the carriageway safe, so

0:16:55 > 0:16:59things like motorbikes don't slide on the road, that type of thing.

0:17:02 > 0:17:04The only thing left to do is to safely remove the wrecked

0:17:04 > 0:17:06vehicles from the side of the road.

0:17:17 > 0:17:21What you see on the back of the car there, that's all energy.

0:17:21 > 0:17:24That's probably 60 to 70mph's worth of energy.

0:17:27 > 0:17:30Now, Alan is able to review the footage from the dashcam

0:17:30 > 0:17:32for the first time.

0:17:35 > 0:17:36Wow!

0:17:36 > 0:17:40That Micra's taken a really sizeable collision there. Big collision.

0:17:44 > 0:17:46The roads are a cruel place.

0:17:46 > 0:17:49We hear stories from all over the country of a family in

0:17:49 > 0:17:54a car doing nothing wrong, sitting in traffic, and all of a sudden,

0:17:54 > 0:17:57there's children and adults tragically killed in a split second.

0:18:01 > 0:18:05And when you see things like this, it does hit it home. It really does.

0:18:05 > 0:18:09Because you get one chance at life and it's a really,

0:18:09 > 0:18:11really precious thing.

0:18:19 > 0:18:21Everyone is safe for now in Gosforth.

0:18:21 > 0:18:23But nearly 120 miles south,

0:18:23 > 0:18:27back at the multicar pile up in Doncaster, it's a different story.

0:18:31 > 0:18:32HE WHISTLES

0:18:32 > 0:18:36Traffic officers Paul Day and Rob Larkin are still battling to

0:18:36 > 0:18:38keep stranded motorists out of harm's way.

0:18:42 > 0:18:45Vehicles cleared of the lane two now.

0:18:48 > 0:18:51Having closed both lanes whilst damaged vehicles were removed

0:18:51 > 0:18:52from the carriageway,

0:18:52 > 0:18:55they've now reopened one of them to ease the traffic.

0:19:01 > 0:19:04Around 50 people are killed or seriously injured on Britain's

0:19:04 > 0:19:08hard shoulders ever year, so Paul's priority is the drivers' safety.

0:19:08 > 0:19:12What we do now is keep an eye on people because of the

0:19:12 > 0:19:15tendency to wander about without a view for any safety.

0:19:15 > 0:19:18So that's what I'm doing at the minute is keeping an eye on

0:19:18 > 0:19:19people who are in cars.

0:19:19 > 0:19:21We don't want anybody getting further injured.

0:19:21 > 0:19:24Like, there's a bloke I'm going to move now cos he's stood

0:19:24 > 0:19:26outside of that car.

0:19:28 > 0:19:31- Mate! - HE WHISTLES

0:19:35 > 0:19:40The danger is somebody not seeing this lane closure and coming

0:19:40 > 0:19:41in to him.

0:19:41 > 0:19:45They'd just take him out. He's just not looking behind him at anything.

0:19:48 > 0:19:50To ensure everyone's safe,

0:19:50 > 0:19:54Paul needs to get the drivers and their vehicles off the carriageway.

0:19:54 > 0:19:56Watch yourselves, boys!

0:19:58 > 0:20:00But only two of the cars are roadworthy.

0:20:00 > 0:20:03The others will have to be recovered.

0:20:03 > 0:20:05That'll just save it coming off in the road then.

0:20:05 > 0:20:07Instead of leaving these two vehicles here,

0:20:07 > 0:20:11what we're planning to do is get the police to escort the Fiesta

0:20:11 > 0:20:15off to the next exit, so he can get recovered from there.

0:20:15 > 0:20:18With the white Fiesta safely chaperoned off,

0:20:18 > 0:20:21there's just the grey BMW left to shift.

0:20:24 > 0:20:26But it won't start.

0:20:26 > 0:20:28There's nothing there.

0:20:28 > 0:20:30So Rob and Paul will have to push it off the road.

0:20:34 > 0:20:38Right, we're going down this hard shoulder and the first little

0:20:38 > 0:20:41yard, we're going in there, all right?

0:20:41 > 0:20:46But weighing in at around 1.5 tonnes, this isn't going to be easy.

0:20:46 > 0:20:49It's a German BMW, great engineering,

0:20:49 > 0:20:53they make them out of solid steel. It's really, really hard to push.

0:20:53 > 0:20:55I hope he's had his porridge this morning.

0:20:58 > 0:21:03No need for a workout today. Luckily, the car is facing downhill.

0:21:03 > 0:21:04That's better. I've got grip.

0:21:09 > 0:21:11Job's a good 'un.

0:21:14 > 0:21:18Minutes later, a recovery truck arrives to pick up the grey BMW.

0:21:22 > 0:21:27Finally, Rob and Paul can now start to get both lanes fully reopened.

0:21:27 > 0:21:30Everybody's cleared the live lane, so we can open this lane.

0:21:30 > 0:21:32We're trying to get it open as quick as we can.

0:21:32 > 0:21:35It's taken nearly an hour and a half to clear the smash and the

0:21:35 > 0:21:39effects on this two-lane stretch will be long lasting.

0:21:39 > 0:21:40If it was normal motorway,

0:21:40 > 0:21:43it'd clear a lot quicker cos you've got three lanes.

0:21:43 > 0:21:45It can handle more volume.

0:21:45 > 0:21:48But with it being two lanes, it'll take forever.

0:21:48 > 0:21:51It can have knock-on effects all the way down.

0:21:54 > 0:21:57- That can be pretty much everyday job, can't it, on here?- Oh, yeah.

0:21:57 > 0:21:59Every day, every shift.

0:21:59 > 0:22:03It's because of the amount of traffic that uses this road.

0:22:03 > 0:22:07- And people drive too close to each other.- Too close, too fast.

0:22:07 > 0:22:10Thankfully, this incident has ended without anyone getting hurt.

0:22:15 > 0:22:18The A1 is one of Britain's key routes for lorries

0:22:18 > 0:22:20transporting cargo.

0:22:20 > 0:22:24More than 20 miles north, near Wetherby, an operation is under

0:22:24 > 0:22:28way to identify HGVs that present a danger to other road users.

0:22:33 > 0:22:37Lorries are responsible for one in five deaths or injuries in

0:22:37 > 0:22:39accidents on the A1 each year.

0:22:39 > 0:22:42So the stakes are high.

0:22:43 > 0:22:46Faults like dodgy brakes or worn tyres on any vehicle are

0:22:46 > 0:22:51a hazard, but on a 40-tonne truck, the results can be terrifying.

0:22:58 > 0:23:02Parked up on the A1 is senior traffic inspector Paul Berryman.

0:23:02 > 0:23:05Victor two in position. Northbound.

0:23:05 > 0:23:08It's his job to spot suspect trucks.

0:23:11 > 0:23:14It's hard to actually tell you what I'm looking for.

0:23:14 > 0:23:16It's something that you...

0:23:16 > 0:23:19It's an instinct you get over a period of time.

0:23:19 > 0:23:22It's something just doesn't look right on the road.

0:23:22 > 0:23:25If it looks a little heavy, if it's not being driven right.

0:23:28 > 0:23:31And it's not long before Paul sees something that warrants

0:23:31 > 0:23:33a closer look.

0:23:34 > 0:23:38I'm just going to get that tanker there. That Belgian tanker.

0:23:39 > 0:23:43Paul needs to overtake the lorry so he can signal him to pull over.

0:23:46 > 0:23:48So I'll just get in front of him.

0:23:48 > 0:23:51But he knows we want him now cos he's slowing right down.

0:23:51 > 0:23:55The other thing I've got to watch is as I pull off the motorway,

0:23:55 > 0:23:58if he doesn't feel like following me, he'll just continue straight on

0:23:58 > 0:24:02up, which is an offence, of course, and he can be prosecuted for that.

0:24:03 > 0:24:07And Paul leads him to a weighbridge site, just off the motorway, where

0:24:07 > 0:24:10the team from the Driver And Vehicle Standards Agency are running

0:24:10 > 0:24:12today's operation.

0:24:15 > 0:24:17Hiya.

0:24:17 > 0:24:19How are you?

0:24:20 > 0:24:22I'm just giving it a quick look round,

0:24:22 > 0:24:25recording the registration number.

0:24:25 > 0:24:29Just make sure he's got all his necessary markings and

0:24:29 > 0:24:31there's nothing hanging off.

0:24:33 > 0:24:36With 30,000 litres of Belgian chocolate on board,

0:24:36 > 0:24:39the driver's heading for York. For now though,

0:24:39 > 0:24:43he'll be the one taking a break while Paul checks his paperwork.

0:24:45 > 0:24:48Meanwhile, another lorry that was brought in earlier is getting

0:24:48 > 0:24:50its mechanical once over.

0:24:50 > 0:24:53And it doesn't take examiner Steve White long to find

0:24:53 > 0:24:55a serious problem.

0:24:58 > 0:24:59Right.

0:24:59 > 0:25:03This is a fuel tank but obviously the cap's missing.

0:25:03 > 0:25:06Somebody's just put a plastic bag in.

0:25:06 > 0:25:09Obviously, that's going to result in immediate prohibition,

0:25:09 > 0:25:12so the vehicle can't be going any further with that defect on it

0:25:12 > 0:25:14until it's been rectified.

0:25:15 > 0:25:18With only a plastic bag stopping hundreds of litres of fuel

0:25:18 > 0:25:22from spilling all over the A1, it could be lethal.

0:25:24 > 0:25:28Even the smallest patch of diesel can be dangerous to motorists.

0:25:28 > 0:25:30So, until it's fixed,

0:25:30 > 0:25:33Romanian driver Sorin and his truck full of clothing

0:25:33 > 0:25:34won't be going anywhere.

0:25:34 > 0:25:38You need to phone your boss and get him to send a fuel cap.

0:25:44 > 0:25:47While Sorin makes his call, Steve moves on to the Belgian chocolate

0:25:47 > 0:25:50tanker and spots a fault with one of the tyres.

0:25:51 > 0:25:53I'll just show you this defect.

0:25:53 > 0:25:55- You've got some damage on a tyre.- Yeah?

0:25:55 > 0:25:58It's not down to the wires or structure,

0:25:58 > 0:26:00so at this moment in time, it's just advisory.

0:26:00 > 0:26:02You just need to keep an eye on it, that's all.

0:26:02 > 0:26:05With advice given and his paperwork all in order,

0:26:05 > 0:26:07the driver and his delicious haul are on their way.

0:26:09 > 0:26:14But things aren't quite so sweet for driver Sorin.

0:26:22 > 0:26:25That'll be about 15 miles away.

0:26:25 > 0:26:28About 20 miles... 15/20 miles away.

0:26:28 > 0:26:31How are you going to get there? Taxi?

0:26:32 > 0:26:34Taxi?

0:26:34 > 0:26:37Sorin's day isn't getting any better.

0:26:37 > 0:26:40First came the fixed penalty fine and now he's facing

0:26:40 > 0:26:44a 30 mile round trip in a taxi to try and get a fuel cap.

0:26:44 > 0:26:47Will he ever get back on the road?

0:26:52 > 0:26:54On the A1 northbound near Pontefract,

0:26:54 > 0:26:57Joseph and Rebecca Fossett are still en route to Durham

0:26:57 > 0:26:59with their exotic load.

0:27:01 > 0:27:04Tonight, their camels are carrying the Three Kings in the city's

0:27:04 > 0:27:06Christmas Nativity.

0:27:09 > 0:27:12I mean, at the moment the traffic's going but there's been two

0:27:12 > 0:27:15signs saying "Incident, slow down, 50."

0:27:15 > 0:27:17But with nearly 100 miles still to go,

0:27:17 > 0:27:20a potential hold up ahead could be disastrous.

0:27:22 > 0:27:25Junction 62 is clear.

0:27:25 > 0:27:29It is. OK. That's brilliant.

0:27:29 > 0:27:32Thank you very much. And you. Thanks. Bye.

0:27:32 > 0:27:35Despite the warning signs, traffic keeps moving.

0:27:37 > 0:27:40And after three hours, the Fossetts decide to take a break.

0:27:42 > 0:27:44- Hello!- Hello, my babies.

0:27:44 > 0:27:49In the desert, camels can go days without water...

0:27:50 > 0:27:52Back up, poppet.

0:27:52 > 0:27:54..but on the car park of some local services...

0:27:54 > 0:27:56In you go. Back up, back up.

0:27:56 > 0:28:00..Kazak, Max and Kokoso look grateful for some refreshments.

0:28:02 > 0:28:05- Look at the way Kazak just... - SHE MIMICS MUNCHING

0:28:05 > 0:28:08He just takes the most enormous mouthful.

0:28:08 > 0:28:12Look at you, it's all falling out your mouth, you greedy thing!

0:28:15 > 0:28:19And this little taste of Arabia is certainly causing

0:28:19 > 0:28:21a stir at this Yorkshire service station.

0:28:23 > 0:28:26You get some strange looks, yes, with members of the public

0:28:26 > 0:28:28But we have to be careful.

0:28:28 > 0:28:31I like to keep it closed up as much as possible because otherwise we

0:28:31 > 0:28:33get crowds of people round wanting to take photographs.

0:28:36 > 0:28:37We always get the same joke -

0:28:37 > 0:28:40which one's called Humphrey?

0:28:40 > 0:28:43So before anyone gets the hump...

0:28:43 > 0:28:45Hey, hey! Don't do that. That's not nice.

0:28:45 > 0:28:47..it's time to get these camels back on the road.

0:28:53 > 0:28:58Thankfully, the A1 gods are on their side and the road ahead looks clear.

0:29:00 > 0:29:03The Fossetts are hoping red sky at night is less shepherd,

0:29:03 > 0:29:05more camel's delight.

0:29:10 > 0:29:11Meanwhile in Durham,

0:29:11 > 0:29:14the crowds are building as the city prepares

0:29:14 > 0:29:16for the annual Nativity parade.

0:29:16 > 0:29:19With the Star of David to guide them,

0:29:19 > 0:29:22all's in place for the camels' shining role.

0:29:22 > 0:29:25So will they make it to the inn on time?

0:29:27 > 0:29:29With less than an hour to spare,

0:29:29 > 0:29:32it looks like the crowd's prayers have been answered.

0:29:32 > 0:29:34Come on, then, Kazak.

0:29:34 > 0:29:36With the three camels delivered safely...

0:29:37 > 0:29:40..the rush is on to make them fit for their kings.

0:29:43 > 0:29:48We've got 45 minutes to get these camels fed, watered, tacked up.

0:29:48 > 0:29:5245 minutes isn't very long, so that's what we're doing now.

0:29:58 > 0:30:01But the festive period isn't just the busiest time of year

0:30:01 > 0:30:03for camels.

0:30:03 > 0:30:06In December, our road networks creak under the pressure

0:30:06 > 0:30:09of millions of us rushing to get our Christmas shopping done.

0:30:10 > 0:30:13And just outside the retail mecca of Newcastle,

0:30:13 > 0:30:16A1 patrol officer PC Darren Lant is using the latest

0:30:16 > 0:30:20technology to track cars driving illegally on the road.

0:30:27 > 0:30:30So we've pulled up, and we're letting the automatic number plate

0:30:30 > 0:30:33recognition system camera that's fitted to the car

0:30:33 > 0:30:35just read the registration numbers of passing vehicles

0:30:35 > 0:30:38and that'll alert us to anything that we need to know of -

0:30:38 > 0:30:40stolen cars, uninsured cars.

0:30:40 > 0:30:43Driving without insurance is one of the most common offences

0:30:43 > 0:30:44Darren deals with.

0:30:46 > 0:30:50Not only do these drivers force up premiums for us all,

0:30:50 > 0:30:53but it can be a nightmare getting compensation if you're

0:30:53 > 0:30:57unlucky enough to be in an accident with an uninsured vehicle.

0:30:59 > 0:31:01And here on the A1,

0:31:01 > 0:31:05it's never long before Darren gets an alert about a suspect car.

0:31:05 > 0:31:08The ANPR camera that reads all the numberplates and lets us know

0:31:08 > 0:31:11if there's anything of note - and it's activated telling

0:31:11 > 0:31:14me this car in front has no insurance details.

0:31:15 > 0:31:19Darren follows the car until it's safe to pull the driver over

0:31:19 > 0:31:21into a car park.

0:31:22 > 0:31:25Hello, there. How are you doing? Is this your car, is it?

0:31:25 > 0:31:27How long have you had it?

0:31:27 > 0:31:30- When did we get it? October.- October.

0:31:30 > 0:31:32Can I see your insurance documents, please?

0:31:32 > 0:31:35Can you see if the black folder's in there?

0:31:36 > 0:31:40- No, babe.- I had to change a bulb and I took it out.

0:31:40 > 0:31:42- All right, OK. No problem. - I've got my licence...

0:31:42 > 0:31:44OK, no problem. Switch your car off and come and have a chat with

0:31:44 > 0:31:47me for two seconds and I'll explain to you why I've stopped you.

0:31:47 > 0:31:49Take a seat in the back on that side.

0:31:49 > 0:31:52The reason why I've stopped you is this car's showing as having

0:31:52 > 0:31:55no insurance held for it. There's no insurance on the details.

0:31:55 > 0:31:58You haven't missed any of the payments or anything, have you?

0:31:58 > 0:32:00- Not that I know of.- Not that you know of.- I haven't...

0:32:00 > 0:32:03- To be fair, I haven't checked but... - Right.

0:32:03 > 0:32:05You haven't had any letters or anything from them saying

0:32:05 > 0:32:07it's been cancelled? OK, no problem.

0:32:07 > 0:32:11We'll give them a ring and find out what the craic is.

0:32:11 > 0:32:14But after a quick check on the police national computer,

0:32:14 > 0:32:15Darren has some bad news to deliver.

0:32:15 > 0:32:19I'm going to have to caution you. You don't have to say anything but it may harm your defence

0:32:19 > 0:32:22if you don't mention when questioned something which you later rely on in court.

0:32:22 > 0:32:26Anything you do say may be given in evidence. You're not under arrest, it's just something I've got to

0:32:26 > 0:32:29say to you when I suspect an offence has been committed.

0:32:29 > 0:32:33- The offence that I suspect has been committed is driving with no insurance.- Right.

0:32:34 > 0:32:38The offence itself carries a fixed penalty of £300.

0:32:38 > 0:32:42But what's worse for the motorist is that Darren cannot allow her

0:32:42 > 0:32:43to continue to drive.

0:32:43 > 0:32:46- The car will be taken from you now. OK?- Right.

0:32:46 > 0:32:48We'll arrange recovery for the car.

0:32:48 > 0:32:53And she'll have to pay £150 release fee on top of the fine.

0:32:53 > 0:32:55Not what you want two days before Christmas, eh?

0:32:59 > 0:33:03To make matters worse, the car is full of Christmas presents.

0:33:03 > 0:33:06They said that they didn't receive my...

0:33:06 > 0:33:10proof of no claims, which was from when I was driving my mam's car

0:33:10 > 0:33:12and I was insured on that.

0:33:12 > 0:33:14But they were all uploaded.

0:33:14 > 0:33:19But I'd probably have to find the e-mail that I sent, I would think.

0:33:19 > 0:33:23It means that my Christmas shopping is not going to plan,

0:33:23 > 0:33:26because I won't have as much money.

0:33:26 > 0:33:28I'll live.

0:33:28 > 0:33:30There's nothing I can do about it.

0:33:32 > 0:33:35Soon a flatbed truck arrives to pick up the car,

0:33:35 > 0:33:40leaving the driver and her passenger to wait by the roadside for a lift.

0:33:42 > 0:33:45If it gets too cold or it starts getting too late,

0:33:45 > 0:33:48please go to the waiting room. Just wait in there, all right?

0:33:48 > 0:33:50- I'm going to sit in Greggs. - Excellent.

0:33:50 > 0:33:52- A great place to sort out your insurance, Greggs.- Aye!

0:33:52 > 0:33:54Get a nice festive bake and a Belgian bun,

0:33:54 > 0:33:58they're the best ones. All right. Watch where you're going. Ta-ra.

0:34:07 > 0:34:09We're not ogres and I know certain traffic cops

0:34:09 > 0:34:12get bad reputations and we're here just to pick on

0:34:12 > 0:34:14the innocent motorists and all that sort of stuff.

0:34:14 > 0:34:17But, no, insurance offences costs people a lot of money.

0:34:17 > 0:34:20And it's a bit of a sickener when you open a car

0:34:20 > 0:34:21when it's full of Christmas presents,

0:34:21 > 0:34:24especially when they're kids' Christmas presents,

0:34:24 > 0:34:26but it's unfortunate.

0:34:30 > 0:34:33There are over 1 million uninsured drivers in Britain,

0:34:33 > 0:34:36so while Darren hates spoiling anyone's Christmas,

0:34:36 > 0:34:39he knows stopping as many offenders as possible

0:34:39 > 0:34:41is good for all other motorists.

0:34:45 > 0:34:47More than 80 miles away near Wetherby,

0:34:47 > 0:34:52some other A1 road users are also falling foul of the law.

0:34:52 > 0:34:55The team from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency

0:34:55 > 0:34:58is continuing their operation to stop and check lorries

0:34:58 > 0:35:02to ensure they're roadworthy.

0:35:02 > 0:35:05Earlier, this wagon was found to have a serious fault

0:35:05 > 0:35:08by enforcement vehicle examiner Steve White.

0:35:10 > 0:35:13The fuel cap is missing and a plastic bag is the only thing

0:35:13 > 0:35:16stopping a lethal spill.

0:35:17 > 0:35:20Driver Sorin has gone to find a replacement cap,

0:35:20 > 0:35:25but with no sign of his return, Steve has to take action.

0:35:25 > 0:35:27We're going to immobilise the vehicle now.

0:35:27 > 0:35:31He's had an hour from issuing the probation notice.

0:35:31 > 0:35:34Obviously, the vehicle's still got the defect on,

0:35:34 > 0:35:37so it gets immobilised.

0:35:39 > 0:35:43And with the front wheel locked, this lorry really is going nowhere.

0:35:47 > 0:35:51Fellow Inspector Paul Berryman is back on the A1 and pulling in

0:35:51 > 0:35:53another truck for inspection.

0:35:59 > 0:36:03Hello, we're just going to do a quick control. Is that OK?

0:36:03 > 0:36:06Steve checks the truck for mechanical faults and gives

0:36:06 > 0:36:08it the all clear.

0:36:08 > 0:36:10But Paul is suspicious about the tachograph

0:36:10 > 0:36:14which records the driver's hours, speed and distance.

0:36:14 > 0:36:19Well, the indication is that there's some sort of interference

0:36:19 > 0:36:25but it's not solid enough to give any, sort of, evidence or proof.

0:36:26 > 0:36:28We would need a bit more to go on.

0:36:31 > 0:36:33The truck has done over 1 million kilometres,

0:36:33 > 0:36:37so Paul would expect to see about 50 small mechanical faults

0:36:37 > 0:36:39recorded in that time.

0:36:40 > 0:36:44Things like a flat battery, but there's nothing.

0:36:44 > 0:36:46That's the first time I've ever come across a printout like that

0:36:46 > 0:36:50with no faults on in ten years.

0:36:50 > 0:36:53I've never seen a printout with no faults on, ever.

0:36:53 > 0:36:55Not even on trucks that are weeks olds.

0:36:55 > 0:36:57There's always faults.

0:36:57 > 0:37:00But this just hasn't any faults whatsoever.

0:37:00 > 0:37:02So either it has been very, very lucky

0:37:02 > 0:37:05and never had a fault or it's never recorded a fault

0:37:05 > 0:37:09or it's been manipulated some way and the faults have been erased.

0:37:12 > 0:37:15Paul suspects a magnet may have been used to tamper with the

0:37:15 > 0:37:19tachograph but the inspectors can't find one.

0:37:19 > 0:37:23So with no physical evidence, all Paul can do is ask the driver.

0:37:23 > 0:37:25I guarantee you he's going to say no.

0:37:29 > 0:37:32Have you been using a magnet?

0:37:32 > 0:37:35A magnet? Switch?

0:37:35 > 0:37:37- Switch? Zapper?- No.- No?

0:37:37 > 0:37:39Are you sure?

0:37:39 > 0:37:42- Are you sure?- Yeah, yeah. - 100%?- No.

0:37:42 > 0:37:45No magnet? Really?

0:37:45 > 0:37:50OK. It just seems too clean.

0:37:53 > 0:37:57Reluctantly, Paul has to let the lorry go.

0:37:57 > 0:38:01And Romanian driver Sorin is back with a new fuel cap.

0:38:05 > 0:38:09Yeah, that's fine. The gentleman's paid his fee for the immobilisation.

0:38:09 > 0:38:13He's also paid his fixed penalty fee for the defect.

0:38:13 > 0:38:16Once we remove this, the gentleman is on his way.

0:38:16 > 0:38:18- OK.- OK. Thank you.

0:38:20 > 0:38:23It's been a successful day for the team.

0:38:23 > 0:38:26They've pulled over 11 vehicles, identified four dangerous faults

0:38:26 > 0:38:31and insured these drivers are safe to keep on trucking.

0:38:34 > 0:38:3770 miles away in the historic city of Durham,

0:38:37 > 0:38:39the Fossetts and their camels have arrived

0:38:39 > 0:38:42for the Christmas Nativity procession.

0:38:49 > 0:38:52After a long journey north, Rebecca and Joseph have just

0:38:52 > 0:38:5745 minutes to transform Kazak, Max and Kokoso for the big moment.

0:38:58 > 0:39:00See, we have bells.

0:39:01 > 0:39:02We like to make them look...

0:39:02 > 0:39:06You know, they look the business, don't they?

0:39:06 > 0:39:09This is what makes it more than just camels,

0:39:09 > 0:39:12it's glamour camels, I suppose.

0:39:12 > 0:39:14It's about having a spectacle.

0:39:16 > 0:39:20With the crowds gathering outside, the freshly adorned camels

0:39:20 > 0:39:22are ready just in time for the arrival

0:39:22 > 0:39:24of their masters of the night.

0:39:24 > 0:39:26Kings! Very good!

0:39:26 > 0:39:29But are these royal riders up to the job?

0:39:33 > 0:39:37Oh, I think when I was a child I may have gone on a camel at Bristol Zoo.

0:39:37 > 0:39:40And not really since then!

0:39:40 > 0:39:43Fortunately, Rebecca has some helpful advice on how to

0:39:43 > 0:39:45mount these six-foot beasts.

0:39:45 > 0:39:47Leg up behind, left leg, OK?

0:39:47 > 0:39:49And then one, two...

0:39:49 > 0:39:53OK, bounce, one, two, three and on the third one Brian will... Voomph!

0:39:53 > 0:39:55One, two, three...

0:39:55 > 0:39:58Slightly more tricky than it sounds.

0:39:58 > 0:40:01There's nothing regal about the mount.

0:40:01 > 0:40:03One, two, three. Up you go.

0:40:05 > 0:40:07Leg up now.

0:40:07 > 0:40:09Two, three.

0:40:13 > 0:40:16Well done.

0:40:16 > 0:40:19The Kings may have once come from the east...

0:40:20 > 0:40:23..but tonight, it's the less exotic confines

0:40:23 > 0:40:26of Durham's multistorey car park.

0:40:29 > 0:40:31- But no matter. - Stand back, please!

0:40:32 > 0:40:36As they wind their way through the city's shopping thoroughfare...

0:40:38 > 0:40:40..they present a pretty arresting sight.

0:40:44 > 0:40:48He snorted down my neck. He blew his nose, basically.

0:40:50 > 0:40:53Their behaviour might not always be majestic...

0:40:54 > 0:40:58..but their arrival is eagerly awaited by the exuberant crowds.

0:41:06 > 0:41:12Really enthusiastic. I mean, a lot of very excited children around.

0:41:12 > 0:41:14I've never seen a camel in my life!

0:41:14 > 0:41:16I've never seen camels walking through

0:41:16 > 0:41:18the streets of Durham before.

0:41:18 > 0:41:21It was quite a nice surprise, but odd in the marketplace!

0:41:26 > 0:41:29Once at the inn, the camels safely deposit their load

0:41:29 > 0:41:33to deliver offerings of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

0:41:37 > 0:41:41And Kazak, Max and Kokoso are free to retire.

0:41:41 > 0:41:43You silly Billy.

0:41:43 > 0:41:44You silly Billy.

0:41:47 > 0:41:51Their starring role over for another year, it's back to the lorry

0:41:51 > 0:41:54for these Three Kings and a well earned rest.

0:41:57 > 0:42:00Oh, I think they'll sleep very well this evening.

0:42:01 > 0:42:04They'll be snoozing on the way back.

0:42:04 > 0:42:07There's just time for a brief show of appreciation...

0:42:08 > 0:42:10Eww, that's not very nice, is it?

0:42:12 > 0:42:14..before they join the A1 southbound

0:42:14 > 0:42:16for their long journey home.

0:42:28 > 0:42:34Everyone involved in the multicar smash made a full recovery.

0:42:34 > 0:42:38The driver of the white van is being investigated for careless driving.

0:42:40 > 0:42:44And lorry driver Sorin made one last trip back to the DVSA...

0:42:44 > 0:42:47He set off and he forgot his documents.

0:42:47 > 0:42:49- ..before getting back on the road... - OK!

0:42:49 > 0:42:51..and completing his A1 journey.

0:42:53 > 0:42:57Next time, the careless drivers putting lives at risk...

0:42:57 > 0:43:01The worst-case scenario is that it's a fatality.

0:43:01 > 0:43:02..officers race to the scene...

0:43:02 > 0:43:04This is high priority.

0:43:04 > 0:43:06..of a treacherous tyre blowout...

0:43:06 > 0:43:08Traffic's just too busy.

0:43:08 > 0:43:11The chances of somebody getting struck on that offside

0:43:11 > 0:43:13is really high.

0:43:13 > 0:43:17..and Santa's reindeer head south.

0:43:17 > 0:43:20You often get this expression of pure delight when people see

0:43:20 > 0:43:21the reindeer for the first time.

0:43:21 > 0:43:23They really are the spirit of Christmas.
