0:01:45 > 0:01:48Paramedics face blizzard conditions on a blue light run.

0:01:51 > 0:01:55And a tip-off helps police officers on a drugs raid.

0:01:55 > 0:01:57This one's obviously quite a young plant.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00Normally they grow to maybe three or four feet high, sometimes taller.

0:02:09 > 0:02:14Britain's countryside boasts some of the most staggering mountain ranges.

0:02:20 > 0:02:25Wild landscapes like these lure millions of walkers each year.

0:02:25 > 0:02:27Outdoor addicts, hooked on adventure.

0:02:32 > 0:02:36But amid this wild and rugged terrain lurks danger,

0:02:36 > 0:02:39and when the forces of nature take a turn for the worse,

0:02:39 > 0:02:42the emergency services race to the rescue.

0:02:46 > 0:02:50On Scotland's southwest coast, HMS Gannet is home to

0:02:50 > 0:02:53one of Britain's busiest search and rescue teams.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57They help people stranded in the most remote locations.

0:03:01 > 0:03:06Today, the four-strong crew is led by co-pilot Geoff Richardson.

0:03:06 > 0:03:08They're about to head out on a training exercise

0:03:08 > 0:03:11when an urgent call comes in from their national control centre

0:03:11 > 0:03:15for not just one, but two, mountain rescues.

0:03:36 > 0:03:40In operations like this, every second counts.

0:03:40 > 0:03:42They have a 15-minute window to get airborne

0:03:42 > 0:03:44and start the 87-mile journey south.

0:03:49 > 0:03:53They're travelling to the Lake District Western Fell range,

0:03:53 > 0:03:56where two climbers have been injured in separate incidents.

0:04:01 > 0:04:04Two minutes after takeoff, the crew get an update on both casualties.

0:04:25 > 0:04:29The crew prioritise, and head first to the climber

0:04:29 > 0:04:34who's dislocated his shoulder coming down the 648-metre Fleetwith Pike.

0:04:35 > 0:04:39He's three miles away, across a rugged mountain range, from Pillar,

0:04:39 > 0:04:41the location of the second casualty.

0:04:55 > 0:04:59In order to reach the casualty, they fly up Buttermere Valley.

0:04:59 > 0:05:02But as they make their approach, the weather worsens.

0:05:32 > 0:05:37A local mountain rescue team has been despatched to the second casualty.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40As the Navy approach their first job, they're in luck.

0:05:40 > 0:05:44A brief weather window means the pilot can climb to the summit.

0:05:44 > 0:05:46Clear door. Clear door. Roger, clear door.

0:05:50 > 0:05:53Fleetwith Pike reveals itself as sheer sided.

0:05:55 > 0:05:58Rescue by helicopter is the best option for the injured climber

0:05:58 > 0:06:00stuck in this precarious location.

0:06:02 > 0:06:04- Just coming round.- Oh yeah, visual.

0:06:10 > 0:06:14The Sea King helicopter circles round to get into a rescue position.

0:06:16 > 0:06:20The question is, how long will the weather hold?

0:06:28 > 0:06:31Police in Dumfries and Galloway

0:06:31 > 0:06:35cover over 2,500 square miles of the southwest of Scotland.

0:06:36 > 0:06:40Plenty of space for the cultivation of illegal drugs.

0:06:40 > 0:06:45Last year, the police here seized drugs with the street value of over £2.5 million.

0:06:47 > 0:06:49Over 10% of that was cannabis.

0:06:52 > 0:06:55Today, the Dumfries officers are responding to tip-offs

0:06:55 > 0:06:59about two local residents allegedly dealing in drugs

0:06:59 > 0:07:01at separate addresses on their patch.

0:07:09 > 0:07:11The briefing involves drug squad officers,

0:07:11 > 0:07:13whose identities must be protected.

0:07:15 > 0:07:20Their information suggests that the men are producing cannabis in their homes.

0:07:20 > 0:07:24The officers are planning simultaneous raids on the two properties.

0:07:26 > 0:07:30If their intelligence stands up, it will be down to these officers,

0:07:30 > 0:07:33PC Matt Tate, Allistair Hope and Adam Potts

0:07:33 > 0:07:35to bring the criminals in.

0:07:38 > 0:07:41Both the raid teams leave together,

0:07:41 > 0:07:43PCs Adam Potts and Allistair Hope

0:07:43 > 0:07:45taking the lead in the raid on the first property.

0:07:46 > 0:07:50The plan'll be when we arrive at the address, we go to the door,

0:07:50 > 0:07:54initially see if it's open, try and take the person inside by surprise.

0:07:54 > 0:07:59If not, we'll knock the door, see if we get any answer.

0:07:59 > 0:08:02And if we do, we'll negotiate our way in.

0:08:02 > 0:08:04If not, there's an MOA team here who'll force entry

0:08:04 > 0:08:06and allow us to search after that.

0:08:09 > 0:08:13Raids like this still get the adrenaline flowing.

0:08:13 > 0:08:16I look forward to it, doing this,

0:08:16 > 0:08:19it's...excitement.

0:08:19 > 0:08:21With the team split between two operations,

0:08:21 > 0:08:24Adam and Allistair proceed with caution.

0:08:25 > 0:08:29One-five-seven to three-nine-five, that's us pulling up outside. Over.

0:08:37 > 0:08:43The tip-off suggested one of the suspects is producing cannabis from this address.

0:08:43 > 0:08:44Hello! It's the police!

0:08:44 > 0:08:47It seems no-one's at home.

0:08:47 > 0:08:50But the officers also have the suspect's work address,

0:08:50 > 0:08:53so they decide to pick him up there,

0:08:53 > 0:08:56rather than force entry to search the house.

0:09:02 > 0:09:06They move fast before anyone tips him off about their house call.

0:09:06 > 0:09:10The plan is now we're going to go to this guy's work and if he's there,

0:09:10 > 0:09:13we'll detain him for a drugs search and bring him back here.

0:09:13 > 0:09:16Roger, sergeant, are you in a position to pull along again?

0:09:16 > 0:09:21Just in case he returns and in case it gets out the police were at his door.

0:09:21 > 0:09:24The suspect works at a local garage.

0:09:24 > 0:09:27He's taken by surprise when the officers arrive.

0:09:27 > 0:09:29I need to take you to your home address to search it, right?

0:09:29 > 0:09:31And I need to tell you you've been detained

0:09:31 > 0:09:35- under Section 23 of the Misuse Of Drugs Act for the drug search. - What, right now?- Right now.

0:09:35 > 0:09:39You don't need to say anything, but anything you do say we'll note down, and use as evidence, OK?

0:09:39 > 0:09:42- All right.- You want to put that down?

0:09:42 > 0:09:45Once arrested, the suspect shuts up shop and accompanies the officers

0:09:45 > 0:09:50back to his home, so they can search for drugs and drug-making equipment.

0:10:00 > 0:10:03We go up to the house, I'll show you the search warrant, OK,

0:10:03 > 0:10:04let you read over it,

0:10:04 > 0:10:07and then we'll carry out a search of your home address, OK? Good man.

0:10:07 > 0:10:10With the suspect now detained, the officers must now find

0:10:10 > 0:10:13evidence of drug dealing to back up his arrest.

0:10:15 > 0:10:19And it'll need to be hard evidence to make any charges stick.

0:10:19 > 0:10:23It's not long before the officers discover that this man's interest

0:10:23 > 0:10:25in gardening is not just ornamental.

0:10:27 > 0:10:31Search of the loft has recovered a small scale cannabis cultivation.

0:10:31 > 0:10:33This one's obviously quite a young plant.

0:10:33 > 0:10:36Normally they grow to three or four feet high, sometimes taller,

0:10:36 > 0:10:38and it's just confirming the intelligence has been accurate...

0:10:38 > 0:10:41and, er, quite pleased with the result we've got.

0:10:44 > 0:10:48A total of nine cannabis plants are confiscated, and the suspect

0:10:48 > 0:10:51is taken to the police station to be formally charged.

0:10:53 > 0:10:55Meanwhile, at the raid on the second property,

0:10:55 > 0:10:59PC Matt Tate has got his hands on another sizeable haul.

0:11:09 > 0:11:12The Royal Navy Search and Rescue Team has been dispatched

0:11:12 > 0:11:15to two separate climbing accidents in the Lake District.

0:11:24 > 0:11:27They battled bad weather to reach the first casualty,

0:11:27 > 0:11:29stranded on the 648-metre Fleetwith Pike.

0:11:38 > 0:11:41A break in the clouds meant the crew was able to spot

0:11:41 > 0:11:45the Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team and the casualty on the summit.

0:11:45 > 0:11:50- Visual. We could land it on there, yeah.- OK.

0:11:52 > 0:11:54In such hostile conditions,

0:11:54 > 0:11:57the weather could close in again at any time.

0:11:58 > 0:12:00Winchman Lee Haggerty descends.

0:12:02 > 0:12:05Steady there. Good position. Good position.

0:12:05 > 0:12:08On the heather, OK, the winch, winch is disconnected,

0:12:08 > 0:12:10raise the winch.

0:12:16 > 0:12:21He races up a steep rocky incline towards the casualty,

0:12:21 > 0:12:24and is met by one of the mountain rescue team.

0:12:24 > 0:12:26Hello, mate, how you doing?

0:12:27 > 0:12:32The casualty has already been secured on a stretcher

0:12:32 > 0:12:34and given morphine for the pain.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37Send you both up together.

0:12:38 > 0:12:42Hello, mate, we've got the MRT leader and the doctor

0:12:42 > 0:12:46we'd like to come with us, so if you're happy, I'll send them

0:12:46 > 0:12:49up to you first, and then we'll recover the stretcher.

0:12:54 > 0:12:58The mountain rescue team leader and their doctor are uplifted first,

0:12:58 > 0:13:01while winchman Lee waits with the climber below.

0:13:10 > 0:13:12With the mountain rescue team on board,

0:13:12 > 0:13:16the crew now turn their attention to safely retrieving the casualty.

0:13:29 > 0:13:32Uplifting people from treacherous icy terrain onto a moving aircraft

0:13:32 > 0:13:36is a high risk activity in a mountain rescue.

0:13:49 > 0:13:5233-year-old mountain climber Lee slipped on ice

0:13:52 > 0:13:55and dislocated his shoulder coming down the Pike.

0:13:57 > 0:14:02Last year, HMS Gannet crews attended 298 incidents.

0:14:02 > 0:14:06They joined forces with Lake District MRTs five times.

0:14:06 > 0:14:08Lee is their latest successful rescue.

0:14:12 > 0:14:13Now, co-pilot Geoff

0:14:13 > 0:14:16turns his attention to the second injured climber,

0:14:16 > 0:14:19whose precise location is still unclear.

0:14:19 > 0:14:22And there's also the issue of fuel to consider.

0:14:46 > 0:14:49Facing bad weather, and low fuel, the team decide to drop

0:14:49 > 0:14:53the first casualty off before they embark on the second rescue.

0:15:04 > 0:15:08In southern Scotland's vast Dumfries and Galloway region,

0:15:08 > 0:15:1140% of the population live in the country.

0:15:16 > 0:15:21With such a massive patch to cover, paramedics have their work cut out

0:15:21 > 0:15:23reaching young and old residents.

0:15:25 > 0:15:28And winter weather poses big problems.

0:15:37 > 0:15:40Dumfries paramedics Michael Harmjanz, in the driver's seat,

0:15:40 > 0:15:44and John West, have a combined 36 years in the ambulance service.

0:15:46 > 0:15:49It's 11am and they've just received a 999 call.

0:16:01 > 0:16:05Of all the jobs they get, chest pains are one of the most urgent.

0:16:09 > 0:16:13They're heading to a small village eight miles out of Dumfries.

0:16:13 > 0:16:16It may look like a winter wonderland,

0:16:16 > 0:16:18but the conditions make driving treacherous.

0:16:46 > 0:16:50They've travelled eight miles in under ten minutes in poor weather.

0:16:50 > 0:16:54When they arrive, the paramedics are met by the casualty's son-in-law.

0:16:55 > 0:16:58Got one of these things here...

0:16:58 > 0:17:01First, they check 74-year-old June's vital signs.

0:17:01 > 0:17:04Chest pains can be a symptom of a heart attack.

0:17:04 > 0:17:08And you say it's in your chest. Is it central or more to one side?

0:17:08 > 0:17:10This was in the central...

0:17:10 > 0:17:15June travelled to Scotland from Kent for her granddaughter's birthday.

0:17:15 > 0:17:17June has a history of heart problems, so when she started

0:17:17 > 0:17:21to get pains in her chest, her family called 999.

0:17:23 > 0:17:27John hooks her up to an ECG machine for a heart reading.

0:17:27 > 0:17:29Within minutes, he discovers an anomaly.

0:17:29 > 0:17:33This thing here that we're seeing on the ECG could be old.

0:17:33 > 0:17:37There's wee things called rabbit ears, which means that

0:17:37 > 0:17:40there's wee anomalies in the... what they call the myocardium.

0:17:40 > 0:17:43So how's the pain, or the ache, is it away altogether?

0:17:43 > 0:17:45Not altogether, no.

0:17:45 > 0:17:48Is it just up here in the shoulder?

0:17:48 > 0:17:50It seems to go into here.

0:17:50 > 0:17:51Hm-mm. Right.

0:17:51 > 0:17:54John's not taking any chances.

0:17:54 > 0:17:58June needs to get checked out by A&E consultants at hospital.

0:18:00 > 0:18:02I feel very trembly.

0:18:02 > 0:18:03You do, do you?

0:18:04 > 0:18:06Well, we'll see if we can get that sorted out.

0:18:06 > 0:18:11- You need these tests done and the only way you'll get them done is by coming with Michael and I.- I know.

0:18:11 > 0:18:15I bet you didn't expect this weather when you came up from Kent.

0:18:15 > 0:18:18- OK to go? - Just whenever, Michael. Thank you.

0:18:21 > 0:18:22Right, date of birth, June.

0:18:22 > 0:18:25An important part of John's job

0:18:25 > 0:18:29is collating the patient's medical history to help the hospital team.

0:18:36 > 0:18:37Half eight, right, so...

0:18:46 > 0:18:48June is in less danger,

0:18:48 > 0:18:51but there's still an urgency to get her to hospital.

0:18:51 > 0:18:55I'm going to mark down the fact I gave you aspirin, things like that.

0:18:59 > 0:19:02You're at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.

0:19:06 > 0:19:0944 minutes after they received the 999 call,

0:19:09 > 0:19:11June's handed over to the A&E team,

0:19:11 > 0:19:13who'll get to the roots of her chest pain.

0:19:14 > 0:19:18With 27 years on the job, John thinks this time,

0:19:18 > 0:19:20the symptoms aren't serious.

0:19:20 > 0:19:24We brought her into Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.

0:19:24 > 0:19:26We've calmed her down, she's quite calm at the moment,

0:19:26 > 0:19:29she says it's still... she can feel something.

0:19:29 > 0:19:34Hopefully, they will be able to get her ECGs from her,

0:19:34 > 0:19:37her tests that were done down in London, and compare them,

0:19:37 > 0:19:40and if they're identical, everything's OK.

0:19:45 > 0:19:48With their patient safely transported to hospital,

0:19:48 > 0:19:52the guys in green are ready for their next rural emergency.

0:20:00 > 0:20:03Drugs are often perceived as being an inner city problem,

0:20:03 > 0:20:09but as rural police forces know only too well, they're everywhere.

0:20:09 > 0:20:13Obviously a substantial quantity of herbal cannabis.

0:20:13 > 0:20:16In Dumfries, the drug squad have had a tip-off about two men

0:20:16 > 0:20:20allegedly dealing drugs and cultivating cannabis in their homes,

0:20:20 > 0:20:24so they've set up a double drugs bust.

0:20:25 > 0:20:29PCs Adam Potts and Allistair Hope have already arrested one suspect

0:20:29 > 0:20:32at his work, and a search of his home

0:20:32 > 0:20:37found his interest in horticulture was evident in his loft as well as his lawn.

0:20:37 > 0:20:41A search of the loft has recovered a small scale cannabis cultivation,

0:20:41 > 0:20:43and it's just confirming that the intelligence we had

0:20:43 > 0:20:46has been accurate and...quite pleased with the result we've got.

0:20:49 > 0:20:51And four miles away,

0:20:51 > 0:20:56PC Matt Tate has success with another significant haul.

0:20:56 > 0:21:01A raid on a second property reveals evidence of a cannabis plantation in the roof space.

0:21:01 > 0:21:05This'll be where they've used for...

0:21:05 > 0:21:09He's been using these to actually grow the plants in,

0:21:09 > 0:21:13put the soil and that in it and then it's used just to grow it, so...

0:21:15 > 0:21:19The discovery of this number of plants and drug-making equipment

0:21:19 > 0:21:22suggests it's been cultivated on a commercial scale.

0:21:23 > 0:21:26It's obviously been good intelligence,

0:21:26 > 0:21:31it's been worth all of us doing it, so... We just attended

0:21:31 > 0:21:34and knocked the door, female occupier answered the door,

0:21:34 > 0:21:39explained who we were, what we were here for, and she let us in,

0:21:39 > 0:21:44and it was as straightforward as that, yeah, no problems at all, it worked quite well.

0:21:44 > 0:21:47And then, obviously we done the quick search

0:21:47 > 0:21:52and found the plants in the attic, so, end of a good day.

0:21:54 > 0:21:57Back at Dumfries police station,

0:21:57 > 0:22:01the first suspect is formally charged by PC Adam Potts.

0:22:01 > 0:22:03Do you want a private consultation with us

0:22:03 > 0:22:08- before being questioned by the police?- No.

0:22:08 > 0:22:11The gentleman's said to us that all that was in the house

0:22:11 > 0:22:15was a small amount of cannabis that he kept in his kitchen.

0:22:15 > 0:22:17It's a common thing that people will say to us,

0:22:17 > 0:22:21that there's a small amount in the house, so they think that we'll take that and then leave, really.

0:22:21 > 0:22:26We've got a drugs search warrant, we're going to search the premises, and this is exactly why.

0:22:26 > 0:22:30With this suspect in custody, it's now time to do the paperwork

0:22:30 > 0:22:33and gather samples of the plants they discovered in their raids.

0:22:33 > 0:22:37This is the samples that'll be sent away to be tested.

0:22:37 > 0:22:39Cut off the plant so it's just a random leaf that we've taken,

0:22:39 > 0:22:43that gets sent away to confirm whether it's a cannabis plant,

0:22:43 > 0:22:46but it certainly looks like it.

0:22:46 > 0:22:50The evidence is then labelled and bagged for submission to the court.

0:22:50 > 0:22:53Today's been a good result, we've got...

0:22:53 > 0:22:56I think the total is about £5,000 worth of cannabis

0:22:56 > 0:22:58off the streets today,

0:22:58 > 0:23:02so that's £5,000 worth of drugs that the drug dealers have lost out on.

0:23:02 > 0:23:04But the other big thing as well is,

0:23:04 > 0:23:07we've took all their equipment away which they use to make the drugs,

0:23:07 > 0:23:11so that'll be their big loss, and they'll have to either restart,

0:23:11 > 0:23:14and buy all that again, or give it up, so, good result today.

0:23:17 > 0:23:20If found guilty of dealing or supplying,

0:23:20 > 0:23:23their suspect could face up to a 14-year prison sentence,

0:23:23 > 0:23:27an unlimited fine, or both.

0:23:35 > 0:23:39The Royal Navy Search and Rescue team has travelled 87 miles

0:23:39 > 0:23:41from its Ayrshire base to the Lake District

0:23:41 > 0:23:44to rescue a climber with a dislocated shoulder.

0:23:46 > 0:23:48Raise the winch.

0:23:48 > 0:23:50With their casualty Lee now safely on board,

0:23:50 > 0:23:53they must get him to hospital, then refuel,

0:23:53 > 0:23:57so they can fly to a second casualty still stuck on a nearby peak.

0:24:10 > 0:24:14The team must get the first casualty to hospital in Carlisle.

0:24:14 > 0:24:19But it's a hairy journey involving a low flight path over some dangerous hazards.

0:24:26 > 0:24:30When the weather's poor, that's when the pilots have fun, that's when we earn our corn.

0:24:30 > 0:24:35So the job, the job in question, we were required to fly

0:24:35 > 0:24:37particularly low level, so we were below 200 feet,

0:24:37 > 0:24:41using a small scale map, and literally at one point

0:24:41 > 0:24:45we were following roads and wires just to try and keep us located.

0:24:55 > 0:24:59Particular hazards, 250 foot power lines, etc,

0:24:59 > 0:25:01we were flying around at that particular level, so,

0:25:01 > 0:25:05you have to be very, very wary, it's an extremely hazardous environment.

0:25:13 > 0:25:15Overcoming challenges with the weather,

0:25:15 > 0:25:18the search and rescue team have already pulled off

0:25:18 > 0:25:22a tricky mountain rescue, but they want to make it two in one day.

0:26:09 > 0:26:13The team swiftly hand over the casualty to waiting paramedics.

0:26:13 > 0:26:17Lee will be rushed to Carlisle Hospital for treatment in A&E.

0:26:19 > 0:26:22But the Royal Navy shift is far from over.

0:26:22 > 0:26:24Next they need a weather update,

0:26:24 > 0:26:28and the latest from the mountain rescue team already dispatched to the other climber.

0:26:28 > 0:26:30Yes.

0:26:32 > 0:26:33Right.

0:26:35 > 0:26:36Right...

0:26:39 > 0:26:43The news from the Search and Rescue Met Office isn't good.

0:26:45 > 0:26:49Time to speak to the second mountain rescue team's control HQ.

0:26:49 > 0:26:50Hello there.

0:26:50 > 0:26:53What's your plan if... cos it's looking...

0:26:53 > 0:26:56We've just had a Met update from our weatherman

0:26:56 > 0:27:01and it's not looking good on us being able to get inland.

0:27:01 > 0:27:05The problem is if the cloud is on the deck all around the coast,

0:27:05 > 0:27:07so we need to get in, we need somehow to get inland

0:27:07 > 0:27:10and that'll be the difficulty, so, certainly with it cooling,

0:27:10 > 0:27:14it's getting worse as well as the night sort of draws in.

0:27:16 > 0:27:18More bad weather means there's no choice

0:27:18 > 0:27:20but to abort the second rescue.

0:27:21 > 0:27:24It's disappointing, but they've learnt that

0:27:24 > 0:27:27a 12-man mountain rescue team has now reached the climber.

0:27:29 > 0:27:34I've spoken to the MRT base and they've got about a dozen personnel

0:27:34 > 0:27:36plus, and some vehicles out on the scene.

0:27:36 > 0:27:39They have a back-up plan, they can walk him off, it'll be a long,

0:27:39 > 0:27:42slow process, so if we can't make it, all is not lost.

0:27:53 > 0:27:57It's been all go for the emergency services in Scotland's rural areas.

0:27:59 > 0:28:01The Lakeland climber, Lee,

0:28:01 > 0:28:03had an operation on his dislocated shoulder.

0:28:03 > 0:28:07He's recovering well and looking forward to reaching his next summit.

0:28:10 > 0:28:12June was monitored in hospital overnight

0:28:12 > 0:28:14and given the all-clear the next day.

0:28:17 > 0:28:20And both suspects detained in the drugs raids were charged

0:28:20 > 0:28:23with production and possession of controlled drugs.

0:28:23 > 0:28:25A date in court awaits.

0:28:26 > 0:28:29And you thought it was quiet in the countryside.
