0:00:02 > 0:00:04From the Highlands of Scotland
0:00:04 > 0:00:06to the coast of Cornwall,
0:00:06 > 0:00:09the Great British countryside is spectacular.
0:00:11 > 0:00:14But we work and play in it at our peril.
0:00:16 > 0:00:19And when things go wrong,
0:00:19 > 0:00:22the emergency services race to the rescue...
0:00:22 > 0:00:24This chap here's having a heart attack
0:00:24 > 0:00:25and we need to get him in quickly.
0:00:27 > 0:00:30There's no police courses for this.
0:00:30 > 0:00:33..going hundreds of miles against the clock,
0:00:33 > 0:00:35battling the elements
0:00:35 > 0:00:37and braving the weather.
0:00:38 > 0:00:40MAN GOANS
0:00:40 > 0:00:43From fields and forests
0:00:43 > 0:00:45to cliffs and country roads,
0:00:45 > 0:00:48we'll be right at the heart of the action...
0:00:49 > 0:00:51..with police fighting crime...
0:00:51 > 0:00:53Could seize your dogs, could seize your van,
0:00:53 > 0:00:55but I'm going to summons you all to court.
0:00:55 > 0:00:57..paramedics saving lives...
0:00:57 > 0:00:59BABY CRIES
0:00:59 > 0:01:02..and wardens safeguarding our lakes.
0:01:02 > 0:01:03Come out of the way!
0:01:04 > 0:01:07We're there as the emergency services pull together
0:01:07 > 0:01:11to pick up, patch up and protect the public.
0:01:12 > 0:01:15This is Countryside 999.
0:01:33 > 0:01:38Coming up, it's agricultural show carnage for the County Durham cops.
0:01:38 > 0:01:41Lads, no, you're not. Get yourselves away.
0:01:41 > 0:01:42Get yourselves away.
0:01:42 > 0:01:44I would prefer you to go and get checked out.
0:01:47 > 0:01:49Cornwall's Air Ambulance hit the beach
0:01:49 > 0:01:51to rescue a collapsed body boarder.
0:01:56 > 0:02:00And in Penzance, a surfer gets a nasty surprise.
0:02:00 > 0:02:02- Did you see this thing that bit you? - Yeah.
0:02:02 > 0:02:03Was it a big one?
0:02:18 > 0:02:19County Durham.
0:02:19 > 0:02:21Home of the northern Pennines.
0:02:21 > 0:02:25A landscape of high moorlands and dales.
0:02:28 > 0:02:31Tasked with policing one of England's most beautiful beats
0:02:31 > 0:02:33are the bobbies of Weardale and Teesdale.
0:02:36 > 0:02:37I can see a bit of blood there.
0:02:40 > 0:02:42Officers like PC Geoff Moore.
0:02:42 > 0:02:44Come up here. I'm not going to be messing around tonight.
0:02:45 > 0:02:47Well, to be honest with you, I'm a local lad.
0:02:47 > 0:02:51I'm from Tow Law and I'd been away down in London when I was young,
0:02:51 > 0:02:54didn't really appreciate what was around us till I come back.
0:02:54 > 0:02:56Got the opportunity to work up here again,
0:02:56 > 0:02:59and when you see what surrounds us, it's fantastic.
0:03:00 > 0:03:03Geoff's beat covers almost 180 square miles.
0:03:05 > 0:03:09He knows only too well being a country cop isn't a cushy number.
0:03:09 > 0:03:11Could you either go that way or this way.
0:03:11 > 0:03:13I never know what I'll be faced with from one day to the next.
0:03:13 > 0:03:15Could be a neighbour dispute one day,
0:03:15 > 0:03:17it could be destruction of a bat colony the next day.
0:03:24 > 0:03:26Because we're based in a rural area,
0:03:26 > 0:03:31they tend to look for officers with quite a few years' experience.
0:03:31 > 0:03:35I'll have 19 years' experience in the force this Christmas.
0:03:35 > 0:03:39We are basically trusted to work by ourselves.
0:03:40 > 0:03:42We haven't got that many officers in Durham
0:03:42 > 0:03:45compared to some of the other forces in the UK.
0:03:45 > 0:03:47Sometimes you've got to learn to think on your feet
0:03:47 > 0:03:50and sometimes discretion is a better part of valour
0:03:50 > 0:03:52and you've got a good bit of chat,
0:03:52 > 0:03:55which hopefully has worked with me so far.
0:03:55 > 0:03:57Touch wood.
0:03:58 > 0:04:02And Geoff's practical approach is about to be tested
0:04:02 > 0:04:04as the tiny town of Wolsingham gears up
0:04:04 > 0:04:06to host Britain's oldest agricultural show.
0:04:15 > 0:04:20The town of just 2,250 is expecting up to 30,000 visitors.
0:04:20 > 0:04:23Here they come. Aah!
0:04:23 > 0:04:26It's the highlight of their countryside calendar.
0:04:34 > 0:04:36Known as the Gateway to Weardale,
0:04:36 > 0:04:38Wolsingham sits on the eastern end
0:04:38 > 0:04:40of a 20-mile stretch of the Wear Valley.
0:04:44 > 0:04:46Over the weekend, it is the agricultural show which
0:04:46 > 0:04:49will be taking place on Saturday and Sunday a mile out of the village.
0:04:49 > 0:04:53However, the fairground will be open here on Friday and Saturday nights
0:04:53 > 0:04:55for the benefit of the local community
0:04:55 > 0:04:56and lots of tourists who come for the shows.
0:04:58 > 0:05:02In the town centre, the funfair is setting up in the market square.
0:05:05 > 0:05:08With road closures, rides and rural revellers,
0:05:08 > 0:05:11it's Geoff's job this weekend to keep everything under control.
0:05:13 > 0:05:15Nice to see you again.
0:05:15 > 0:05:17I know you've obviously got the waltzers set up today.
0:05:17 > 0:05:19Are you doing anything else in the market tonight?
0:05:21 > 0:05:22Right.
0:05:24 > 0:05:26And the burger vans and stuff like that,
0:05:26 > 0:05:28are they going the same as last year?
0:05:28 > 0:05:30And will they be going all the way around the corner again?
0:05:30 > 0:05:33OK. Well, I'm on again this weekend, so I'll see you this weekend.
0:05:33 > 0:05:35Anyway, thanks very much. Cheers.
0:05:35 > 0:05:37PHONE RINGS Geoff Moore..
0:05:40 > 0:05:43Tonight, we are out in Wolsingham marketplace,
0:05:43 > 0:05:45so all the local youths will be down there
0:05:45 > 0:05:47and there'll be lost of youths from other areas
0:05:47 > 0:05:49coming in on the buses tonight.
0:05:49 > 0:05:52So we're looking for underage drinking, any antisocial behaviour,
0:05:52 > 0:05:54possible drunk and disorderly offences
0:05:54 > 0:05:56and anything else that happens tonight.
0:05:56 > 0:05:58Cos with the flashing lights and the alcohol
0:05:58 > 0:05:59and with the kids and stuff like that,
0:05:59 > 0:06:02there is a potential it at all to go horribly wrong quite quickly.
0:06:06 > 0:06:09And if it does go wrong, there's only a thin blue line
0:06:09 > 0:06:12of four cops and a couple of police community support officers
0:06:12 > 0:06:13on shift to deal with it.
0:06:16 > 0:06:19So, the key is to keep things under control from early on.
0:06:19 > 0:06:21Which school do you go to?
0:06:21 > 0:06:24But already, things are starting to kick off.
0:06:24 > 0:06:25- How much have you had to drink?- Nothing.
0:06:25 > 0:06:27You have, I can smell it on you.
0:06:27 > 0:06:30Underage drinkers have been caught in the local park.
0:06:30 > 0:06:34- I've just had a bit, not a lot. - Right. Address?
0:06:34 > 0:06:37Basically, we've found an underage girl in possession of alcohol.
0:06:37 > 0:06:39Because it's an open container,
0:06:39 > 0:06:41we're allowed by law just to pour it away.
0:06:41 > 0:06:43What you two need to understand is
0:06:43 > 0:06:45we're out trying to stop underage drinking.
0:06:45 > 0:06:47- How old are you, young lady? - I'm 15.- 14.
0:06:47 > 0:06:49And you've had a drink of that cider? Right.
0:06:49 > 0:06:51And your friend's obviously had some cos I can smell it on her.
0:06:51 > 0:06:54- This is the first time... - What you lot need to understand
0:06:54 > 0:06:56is you need to tell us who this other young lady is,
0:06:56 > 0:06:58otherwise you'll be in a whole lot more bother.
0:06:58 > 0:06:59Are you going to tell us who she is?
0:06:59 > 0:07:02- Cos you seem more... - Why do you want to...?
0:07:02 > 0:07:04..sensible then your colleague here.
0:07:04 > 0:07:06Right, this is how it's going to work out.
0:07:06 > 0:07:09For those who don't know us... Do you know who I am or not?
0:07:09 > 0:07:12- Eh?- PC Moore. - Oh, so my reputation goes be...
0:07:12 > 0:07:13- You're PC Moore?!- I am.
0:07:13 > 0:07:15- I've heard about you, mind. - Is it all bad?
0:07:15 > 0:07:18- SHE LAUGHS Right.- You catch everyone.- Good.
0:07:18 > 0:07:22I've found the older I've got, the more intolerant I maybe get.
0:07:24 > 0:07:27Lots of the problems that we've had this year
0:07:27 > 0:07:29has been with underage drinking
0:07:29 > 0:07:31and, basically, kids coming up en masse
0:07:31 > 0:07:33from Crook and Wellington and Tow Law
0:07:33 > 0:07:37and being involved in more like nuisance stuff, really.
0:07:37 > 0:07:38As far as it goes, ladies, right?
0:07:38 > 0:07:40You've had a drink cos I can smell it on you...
0:07:40 > 0:07:41- I've only had a couple.- You say...
0:07:41 > 0:07:44Right, what time are you going home tonight, ladies?
0:07:44 > 0:07:47- We get the five past...- 19:55. - That's the last bus.
0:07:47 > 0:07:48- The 19:55 bus?- Yeah.
0:07:48 > 0:07:52Right. I'm working here till four o'clock in the morning, right?
0:07:52 > 0:07:54I'm expecting to see you two on that bus.
0:07:54 > 0:07:56If you're not, what we'll end up doing,
0:07:56 > 0:07:58because we've already had some dealings tonight,
0:07:58 > 0:08:01we'll put you in the police car and we will take you back home.
0:08:01 > 0:08:03Can I make it any clearer than that?
0:08:03 > 0:08:05How old are you?
0:08:05 > 0:08:08- 15.- Right. How old do you have to be when you drink?
0:08:08 > 0:08:10- I don't know.- 18.
0:08:10 > 0:08:13And if I find a reason to deal with you again tonight
0:08:13 > 0:08:16and you're under the influence, I'll be looking to arrest you.
0:08:16 > 0:08:19OK? What you need to understand is you're 15.
0:08:19 > 0:08:22- You need to be 18 to drink lawfully in this country, yeah?- No.
0:08:22 > 0:08:24That's why we've confiscated the alcohol.
0:08:24 > 0:08:28I'll see you down the shows tonight and I expect you on the bus later on.
0:08:30 > 0:08:33We've obviously stopped the girls hiding in the toilets there
0:08:33 > 0:08:34and they've done a bit of a starburst.
0:08:34 > 0:08:37One of them has had a half drunk bottle of cider in their bag.
0:08:37 > 0:08:40All the girls have admitted to drinking alcohol,
0:08:40 > 0:08:41that's why we've seized it.
0:08:41 > 0:08:42They're all under the age of 18.
0:08:43 > 0:08:45To be honest with you, we find that the North East
0:08:45 > 0:08:48is one of the worst places for the underage drinking.
0:08:48 > 0:08:50- How old are you, young lady? - I'm 15.- 14.
0:08:50 > 0:08:53A lot of the kids from Crook, Willington and surrounding areas
0:08:53 > 0:08:55will come down, bring alcohol down with them,
0:08:55 > 0:08:57go to the parks and stuff like that,
0:08:57 > 0:08:59have a few drink before they go on the rides and, like I say,
0:08:59 > 0:09:01we're just trying to nip it in the bud
0:09:01 > 0:09:03before they get completely intoxicated.
0:09:05 > 0:09:08But it looks like the boozing teens are back.
0:09:08 > 0:09:10Geoff's called to a street just off the town centre.
0:09:12 > 0:09:14- Right, is this all the alcohol? - Yeah.
0:09:14 > 0:09:17- Right, have my colleagues got your details?- Yes.- Yes.
0:09:17 > 0:09:18Have we met before?
0:09:18 > 0:09:21Right, get yourself away. Away.
0:09:21 > 0:09:24I don't expect to have any more dealings with you tonight.
0:09:26 > 0:09:29What they'll normally do is bring the booze with them in bags,
0:09:29 > 0:09:32get the girls to carry it with them, find a quiet street
0:09:32 > 0:09:35and arrange, basically, to text up on the phones to meet in the street,
0:09:35 > 0:09:37have all this booze and then go down on the rides
0:09:37 > 0:09:40cos they know we'll be patrolling the fair later on.
0:09:40 > 0:09:42So, it's our role to go round the side streets
0:09:42 > 0:09:43and try and eliminate all this
0:09:43 > 0:09:46because the more of this that goes in,
0:09:46 > 0:09:47the more problems we'll have later on.
0:09:48 > 0:09:52It's a game of cat and mouse between the cops and the kids.
0:09:52 > 0:09:56But Geoff's battle to keep booze off the streets has only just begun.
0:10:08 > 0:10:10The great British coastline.
0:10:11 > 0:10:16Its varied landscape of secluded coves and busy beaches
0:10:16 > 0:10:18a draw for millions of us seeking peace...
0:10:20 > 0:10:21..or adventure.
0:10:24 > 0:10:27In Cornwall, you're never more than 20 miles from the sea.
0:10:30 > 0:10:33So, when summer arrives and the crowds descend...
0:10:34 > 0:10:36..getting help to the holiday hordes
0:10:36 > 0:10:39poses big challenges for rural emergency services.
0:10:40 > 0:10:42Cornwall is a fairly large county.
0:10:42 > 0:10:46We've got a huge amount of coastline and we've got two hospitals
0:10:46 > 0:10:49that we take our patients to primarily in the area.
0:10:49 > 0:10:53And in places in Cornwall, it is quite a distance by road
0:10:53 > 0:10:57to get these patients to the hospital and can take up to an hour.
0:10:57 > 0:11:00So, the aircraft is a vital piece of equipment in Cornwall
0:11:00 > 0:11:02to get these patients to hospital quickly.
0:11:04 > 0:11:06It's August bank holiday weekend.
0:11:06 > 0:11:10Air Paramedic Mark Fuszard and the Cornwall Air Ambulance team
0:11:10 > 0:11:12are braced for a busy day.
0:11:16 > 0:11:20Today being Saturday of the August bank holiday weekend,
0:11:20 > 0:11:22it is going to bring its own kind of problems.
0:11:22 > 0:11:24Luckily, we've got a great day for flying,
0:11:24 > 0:11:28which means it's going to be a great day for people to get down the beach,
0:11:28 > 0:11:30so we're expecting high volumes of people to be using the beach,
0:11:30 > 0:11:33to be using the water and hopefully enjoying themselves
0:11:33 > 0:11:34and hopefully keeping themselves safe.
0:11:38 > 0:11:42In 2013, the hot summer pushed visitor numbers up,
0:11:42 > 0:11:45putting pressure on emergency services across the county.
0:11:45 > 0:11:48SIREN WAILS
0:11:48 > 0:11:522014 promises more of the same.
0:11:59 > 0:12:01A call has just come in.
0:12:01 > 0:12:03How old is this chap? 40-year-old male.
0:12:03 > 0:12:05And the lifeguard's on the scene, yeah?
0:12:05 > 0:12:06Brilliant. OK, mate. We're on our way.
0:12:06 > 0:12:08Thanks, Paul. Bye.
0:12:09 > 0:12:12OK, we've got a 40-year-old male that has been pulled out of the water
0:12:12 > 0:12:14at Widemouth Bay, which is up near Bude,
0:12:14 > 0:12:16so quite a long way from hospital.
0:12:16 > 0:12:19Pulled out of the water and he's not recovering very well.
0:12:19 > 0:12:21In fact, he's actually deteriorating now,
0:12:21 > 0:12:22so possibly secondary drowning.
0:12:22 > 0:12:24But until we get there, we won't know.
0:12:24 > 0:12:26So, we'll get on our way to Bude.
0:12:31 > 0:12:33In serious medical emergencies like this,
0:12:33 > 0:12:37the team aim to be scrambled and airborne in just two minutes.
0:12:39 > 0:12:41On shift today with Mark
0:12:41 > 0:12:44are paramedic Stu Croft and pilot Nick James.
0:12:53 > 0:12:55The team are heading 30 miles north-east
0:12:55 > 0:12:57to Widemouth Bay, near Bude.
0:13:05 > 0:13:07It's quite a large beach.
0:13:07 > 0:13:09From hospital, it is probably a good hour,
0:13:09 > 0:13:11an hour and 20 minutes from the nearest hospital.
0:13:11 > 0:13:13It is quite out in the sticks, really.
0:13:13 > 0:13:16We're going to a 40-year-old male who has been pulled from the water,
0:13:16 > 0:13:19which initially, he was responsive,
0:13:19 > 0:13:22but has no become unresponsive and is deteriorating.
0:13:22 > 0:13:26He's hypotensive, which means got a very low blood pressure.
0:13:28 > 0:13:30A lot of watersports activity in this area, obviously,
0:13:30 > 0:13:34with the surfing, windsurfing, that kind of thing.
0:13:34 > 0:13:35People do get themselves into difficulty.
0:13:35 > 0:13:38Luckily, we've got a good lifeguard service down this way
0:13:38 > 0:13:40that manages to get them out, rescue them
0:13:40 > 0:13:43and then it becomes our job to take them to hospital.
0:13:44 > 0:13:48But getting this patient to hospital will involve landing on a beach.
0:14:02 > 0:14:04The beach is going to be really quite busy.
0:14:04 > 0:14:07Looking at the state of the tide and knowing the tide times,
0:14:07 > 0:14:10we're looking at the tide fairly high up.
0:14:11 > 0:14:13So, the problem is, have we got enough beach
0:14:13 > 0:14:16that we can actually land on or look at another site?
0:14:16 > 0:14:19So, we might look at landing from the beach
0:14:19 > 0:14:20and getting the patient brought to us.
0:14:22 > 0:14:25Stu makes contact with the land paramedic treating the casualty.
0:14:46 > 0:14:48Gentlemen didn't have any radial pulses at the time,
0:14:48 > 0:14:50which means they couldn't find a pulse in his wrist,
0:14:50 > 0:14:52which means his blood pressure is too low
0:14:52 > 0:14:54to support normal bodily functions.
0:14:54 > 0:14:56It can be a sign of shock,
0:14:56 > 0:14:59which could be cardiogenic shock, which is a heart attack.
0:14:59 > 0:15:01He could have anaphylactic shock,
0:15:01 > 0:15:03which is a massive allergic reaction.
0:15:03 > 0:15:06They're all life threatening, so that is a time-critical emergency.
0:15:29 > 0:15:30The lifeguards do that very well.
0:15:30 > 0:15:32They'll clear an area then they'll mark it.
0:15:32 > 0:15:36Usually on the wet sand, which stops the dry sand recirculating
0:15:36 > 0:15:40and causing, you know, sandblasting people having their picnics.
0:16:00 > 0:16:03The lifeguards, my first question to them as I walked over was,
0:16:03 > 0:16:04"Oh, where's the patient?"
0:16:04 > 0:16:07And they pointed to half a mile away to a little hut and said,
0:16:07 > 0:16:08"Oh, he's over there."
0:16:13 > 0:16:17It's a speedy and co-ordinated response from the lifeguards,
0:16:17 > 0:16:20who train with the air ambulance teams for emergencies like this.
0:16:22 > 0:16:25So, we're going to make way through on the vehicle,
0:16:25 > 0:16:27through all the beach-goers.
0:16:27 > 0:16:29There's a paramedic up there.
0:16:29 > 0:16:33We'll assess him and get him down to the helicopter as quick as we can.
0:16:33 > 0:16:35It's obviously a very busy beach
0:16:35 > 0:16:37and we're causing a bit of a distraction.
0:16:39 > 0:16:41Just up these steps and you're up the tower
0:16:41 > 0:16:44and he's just on the medical bed.
0:16:45 > 0:16:47How you doing, guys? Are you OK?
0:16:47 > 0:16:51Good, thank you. How are you doing? All right?
0:17:06 > 0:17:07OK.
0:17:07 > 0:17:1147-year-old Andrew had been body boarding with wife Briony
0:17:11 > 0:17:13and their kids when he took ill in the water.
0:17:14 > 0:17:18He is conscious, but feeling too sick to sit up.
0:17:18 > 0:17:21- No big meals at anything before...? - No, no. Nothing is such, no.
0:17:21 > 0:17:23You didn't go underwater and inhale any water
0:17:23 > 0:17:24or swallow any water that you know of?
0:17:27 > 0:17:28OK, that's fine. Sure.
0:17:28 > 0:17:30You didn't pass out in the water?
0:17:39 > 0:17:42Andrew's very low blood pressure is a big concern.
0:17:43 > 0:17:46He must be transferred flat on a stretcher,
0:17:46 > 0:17:47but there's no ambulance
0:17:47 > 0:17:50and the helicopter's too far away for him to be carried.
0:18:00 > 0:18:03Back at the Wolsingham Agricultural Show in County Durham,
0:18:03 > 0:18:07PC Geoff Moore's making sure everyone is behaving themselves.
0:18:07 > 0:18:10Just so you understand, it's a public place.
0:18:10 > 0:18:12That's a private place, so I want you all to get down.
0:18:14 > 0:18:17With the agricultural show winding down,
0:18:17 > 0:18:19people are spilling out and into town.
0:18:21 > 0:18:24Geoff's bracing himself for a busy night ahead.
0:18:24 > 0:18:27Some of the families are starting to go home with little kids now.
0:18:27 > 0:18:30Some of the teenagers are obviously starting to play up a little bit.
0:18:30 > 0:18:32They're seeing we're out, it's a bit of sport for them
0:18:32 > 0:18:33to have a laugh and a joke,
0:18:33 > 0:18:35but sometimes they push it a little too far.
0:18:35 > 0:18:37We've confiscated a little bit of alcohol.
0:18:37 > 0:18:40I'm sure you can go down there and probably see you down there.
0:18:40 > 0:18:44And we're still, basically, looking around some of the side streets,
0:18:44 > 0:18:46some of the parks, just to see where the kids are at the moment.
0:18:50 > 0:18:51For Geoff and the team,
0:18:51 > 0:18:54tonight's beat isn't all about spoiling people's fun.
0:18:56 > 0:18:58Hello, Robert!
0:18:58 > 0:19:00- Evening, ladies.- Hiya.
0:19:01 > 0:19:04Some of the officers I work with are also local lads like me.
0:19:04 > 0:19:08It's a good way of meeting people I was at school with 30 years ago,
0:19:08 > 0:19:10catching up, meeting their families.
0:19:10 > 0:19:13And there's also people who I might not have seen, like, you know,
0:19:13 > 0:19:14in maybe a week.
0:19:20 > 0:19:22Basically, it's cleared out an awful lot.
0:19:22 > 0:19:25All the families have gone home with the little 'uns,
0:19:25 > 0:19:27so a lot of the kids are just hanging around
0:19:27 > 0:19:28probably till the last knockings.
0:19:28 > 0:19:30Last orders in the pubs are at 10.30.
0:19:30 > 0:19:33Pubs will be shut up here at 11 o'clock.
0:19:33 > 0:19:35Last ride will finish at 11 o'clock as well.
0:19:35 > 0:19:37However, what we tend to find is
0:19:37 > 0:19:38because the kids are from out of the area,
0:19:38 > 0:19:41the buses are finished now, they'll have to wait to get lifts home,
0:19:41 > 0:19:45so we'll end up hanging around here waiting for them to go
0:19:45 > 0:19:46and we can't go till they go.
0:19:48 > 0:19:49And until then,
0:19:49 > 0:19:52the cops will be keeping a close eye on the revellers.
0:19:55 > 0:19:56Young man.
0:20:01 > 0:20:04I've just confiscated four bottles of alcohol
0:20:04 > 0:20:07from a 15-year-old local male that we've found in a bag.
0:20:11 > 0:20:13I think also, we've probably seized somewhere in the region
0:20:13 > 0:20:16of about £40 to £50 worth of alcohol
0:20:16 > 0:20:19from six or seven youths, all told.
0:20:20 > 0:20:22By taking the alcohol off them, it does keep the lid on it,
0:20:22 > 0:20:25otherwise it just gets out of control and gets silly.
0:20:25 > 0:20:28They start to fight and their behaviour just goes downhill.
0:20:32 > 0:20:34The cops also check in on the pubs,
0:20:34 > 0:20:36where the party spirit is in full swing.
0:20:38 > 0:20:42Wolsingham Show, we have Tom...
0:20:42 > 0:20:43Today at the Black Bull, Wolsingham.
0:20:43 > 0:20:45..we have the police doing a good job.
0:20:45 > 0:20:47What they are doing is settling everyone down,
0:20:47 > 0:20:50keeping everyone calm.
0:20:50 > 0:20:52We've got the shows in the background,
0:20:52 > 0:20:54if you'd pan around to them, sir.
0:20:54 > 0:20:57Everyone should come down from all over to come and watch these shows.
0:20:57 > 0:21:00- Then you've got this on at night. - You've got the shows on the night.
0:21:00 > 0:21:03It brings the atmosphere to Wolsingham. Best night of the year.
0:21:03 > 0:21:06It's not just about the alcohol. You have a good time.
0:21:09 > 0:21:11As kicking-out time approaches,
0:21:11 > 0:21:14the party starts to spill out into the streets.
0:21:14 > 0:21:17Whoop-whoop!
0:21:17 > 0:21:18Takes all sorts.
0:21:18 > 0:21:21He's one of my old customers from Tow Law.
0:21:21 > 0:21:23- Can I have a go of your hat?- No.
0:21:23 > 0:21:25GEOFF LAUGHS
0:21:27 > 0:21:29As people have come out tonight,
0:21:29 > 0:21:32they've taken a little bit of alcohol on board.
0:21:32 > 0:21:34Sometimes it affects people in different ways.
0:21:34 > 0:21:36Sometimes people become very friendly and want to give you cuddles
0:21:36 > 0:21:39and put their arms round you and take lots of selfies, like tonight.
0:21:39 > 0:21:41But it's also got the potential to escalate.
0:21:44 > 0:21:46We'll end up taking her home. She's only 16.
0:21:46 > 0:21:48I'm best friends with her brother.
0:21:48 > 0:21:49- She's coming with us. - Makes no difference.
0:21:49 > 0:21:52We're going to take her home to make sure she gets home.
0:21:52 > 0:21:54No, you're not. Get yourselves away. Get yourselves away.
0:21:54 > 0:21:56Is your mam at home?
0:21:56 > 0:21:59We have to be seen to do the right thing when necessary.
0:21:59 > 0:22:02We have to make arrests where offence is committed.
0:22:02 > 0:22:03MAN LAUGHS
0:22:03 > 0:22:05- All right, son.- Don't be a complete tool.- I'm sorry.
0:22:05 > 0:22:07- Get yourself away.- Sorry.
0:22:07 > 0:22:10Sometimes, you've got to have a little bit of common sense,
0:22:10 > 0:22:12weigh everything up, and if we get taken away
0:22:12 > 0:22:14or me and one of my other colleagues makes an arrest,
0:22:14 > 0:22:17then that puts more pressure on my other colleagues
0:22:17 > 0:22:19to deal with any potential disorder later on that night.
0:22:23 > 0:22:24Despite the odd upset,
0:22:24 > 0:22:27the cops have managed to keep everything under control.
0:22:27 > 0:22:28We've had a good night.
0:22:28 > 0:22:31To be honest with you, the evening's been quite quiet tonight,
0:22:31 > 0:22:34which has been nice. There hasn't been any serious incidents.
0:22:34 > 0:22:38I'd rather have a quiet weekend with no crime, no people getting injured.
0:22:38 > 0:22:40To me, that's always a positive.
0:22:41 > 0:22:46But reports suddenly come through of an accident over by the fairground.
0:22:47 > 0:22:51Geoff might not be getting his incident-free night after all.
0:22:59 > 0:23:01From a busy beat to a busy beach.
0:23:04 > 0:23:06At Widemouth Bay in Cornwall,
0:23:06 > 0:23:10air paramedic Stu is dealing with 47-year-old Andrew,
0:23:10 > 0:23:12who collapsed while body boarding.
0:23:13 > 0:23:16He's being treated in the lifeguard hut.
0:23:16 > 0:23:19But Stu now needs to work out how to get him back to the helicopter
0:23:19 > 0:23:21without an ambulance.
0:23:21 > 0:23:24Just had a quick chat with the lifeguards. Yeah, good, thanks.
0:23:24 > 0:23:26Have we got...?
0:23:30 > 0:23:33Or from the helicopter to here and then back with the patient.
0:23:33 > 0:23:34Do you have a large flatbed truck?
0:23:34 > 0:23:35Yeah.
0:23:35 > 0:23:37While Stu works out transport,
0:23:37 > 0:23:40road paramedic Darren is keeping a close eye on Andrew.
0:23:46 > 0:23:49Blood pressure was low and he had a very, very weak radial pulse
0:23:49 > 0:23:51and his oxygen levels were very low as well,
0:23:51 > 0:23:55so we reversed that by giving him some oxygen, some fluids.
0:23:55 > 0:23:59With people this age and they present with collapses, it's heart attacks.
0:23:59 > 0:24:01Not always with pains or shortness of breath.
0:24:01 > 0:24:04Sometimes they just present in a collapsed state.
0:24:04 > 0:24:07So, my initial thoughts were, "This guy might be having a heart attack."
0:24:08 > 0:24:11They must get Andrew to the helicopter and to hospital.
0:24:12 > 0:24:14Where we are in Bude and certain areas,
0:24:14 > 0:24:18it's the longest distance to any main hospital in the UK.
0:24:18 > 0:24:21So, we can cut a lot of time off and save a lot of time
0:24:21 > 0:24:23and lives with the air ambulance. They're great.
0:24:25 > 0:24:28On hand to help is lifeguard supervisor Ross.
0:24:28 > 0:24:30We're going to transport him in the back of the vehicle
0:24:30 > 0:24:31over to the helicopter.
0:24:31 > 0:24:33We usually like to have the helicopter at the top here.
0:24:33 > 0:24:36Cos we're busy in the car park, there's no landing space.
0:24:36 > 0:24:38So, we're going to put him in the back of the truck
0:24:38 > 0:24:41and transport him down to the helicopter on the beach there.
0:24:41 > 0:24:43But a crowded beach means the lifeguards
0:24:43 > 0:24:45can't take their eye off the ball.
0:24:45 > 0:24:47Got all our battle stations on that one incident.
0:24:47 > 0:24:50We've got to keep an eye as well on what's going on around us.
0:24:50 > 0:24:51It's a busy day the beach today.
0:24:51 > 0:24:53A lot of water users, a lot of strong rips as well,
0:24:53 > 0:24:56so the guards have to be vigilant on everything that's going on.
0:24:58 > 0:25:02Also keeping a close watch on the sea and the tide is pilot Nick.
0:25:03 > 0:25:05We're trying to keep in contact,
0:25:05 > 0:25:07keeping each other updated with what's going on.
0:25:07 > 0:25:09We're going to bring him across to you ASAP.
0:25:09 > 0:25:11We're moving it on as fast as we can.
0:25:14 > 0:25:15Ready, set, lift.
0:25:19 > 0:25:23OK, it's got feet on it so it will slide once it gets in the grooves.
0:25:23 > 0:25:25With seriously low blood pressure,
0:25:25 > 0:25:29Andrew's kept flat to ensure he gets enough blood and oxygen
0:25:29 > 0:25:30to his major organs.
0:25:31 > 0:25:34How are you feeling after that little bit of standing up?
0:25:35 > 0:25:38OK. Not feeling dizzy?
0:25:38 > 0:25:39OK.
0:25:41 > 0:25:45Doing quite well. He's made quite a good recovery
0:25:45 > 0:25:49with the treatment provided by the first paramedics here.
0:25:49 > 0:25:51So, we're just going to take a steady trip
0:25:51 > 0:25:52across to the helicopter now.
0:25:53 > 0:25:56Come for a nice day out at the beach and then suddenly,
0:25:56 > 0:25:57your worst nightmare.
0:25:57 > 0:25:59You're on holiday, you're poorly
0:25:59 > 0:26:01and you haven't a clue where you are.
0:26:01 > 0:26:04And certainly, you know, in quite a remote area.
0:26:04 > 0:26:07But great team effort. Lifeguards are well trained.
0:26:07 > 0:26:10RRV paramedic came very quickly, made a good assessment.
0:26:10 > 0:26:13So, a good early call from him means we can do our bit,
0:26:13 > 0:26:16get here quickly and get him to hospital straightaway.
0:26:20 > 0:26:22OK there, guys?
0:26:22 > 0:26:24Without the truck, the team would have struggled
0:26:24 > 0:26:27to stretcher Andrew the rugged half mile to the helicopter.
0:26:30 > 0:26:31OK, yep.
0:26:38 > 0:26:39Thank you very much, mate. Cheers.
0:26:39 > 0:26:42We're looking to go to the most appropriate unit
0:26:42 > 0:26:45and because we didn't know what was wrong with him at this time,
0:26:45 > 0:26:48then we decided to head for Derriford Hospital in Plymouth,
0:26:48 > 0:26:49which is a sort of a major trauma centre
0:26:49 > 0:26:51and has lots of specialist areas.
0:26:54 > 0:26:59From taking the call, it took the Helimed team just 40 minutes
0:26:59 > 0:27:02to get Andrew safely in the air and en route to hospital...
0:27:04 > 0:27:06..thanks to a multi-team effort
0:27:06 > 0:27:09with the RNLI lifeguards and ground paramedics.
0:27:14 > 0:27:15He's in a stable condition.
0:27:15 > 0:27:18Conscious and feeling a lot better for it and obviously,
0:27:18 > 0:27:20with the guys in the helicopter,
0:27:20 > 0:27:22they can get him straight to Derriford Hospital,
0:27:22 > 0:27:24which is probably by air about 20 minutes.
0:27:24 > 0:27:27In respect with us, it is probably over an hour by land.
0:27:27 > 0:27:30So, you can see he is far better off going by air.
0:27:30 > 0:27:33He'll get there a lot quicker and he'll get the care he needs.
0:27:46 > 0:27:50While the hot weather in Cornwall continues,
0:27:50 > 0:27:51record water temperatures
0:27:51 > 0:27:54are drawing the crowds down to the beaches.
0:27:59 > 0:28:02The county's only major emergency department in Truro
0:28:02 > 0:28:04is facing their busiest August in four years.
0:28:06 > 0:28:09But helping to take the strain off the holiday influx
0:28:09 > 0:28:11is the Urgent Care Centre in Penzance.
0:28:14 > 0:28:16Have you hurt your nose? Aww.
0:28:20 > 0:28:22That's it.
0:28:22 > 0:28:24LAUGHTER
0:28:24 > 0:28:25Let's put them up a little bit higher.
0:28:33 > 0:28:35The team here deal with minor injuries,
0:28:35 > 0:28:38from cuts and scrapes to bumps and breaks.
0:28:40 > 0:28:41Brilliant.
0:28:41 > 0:28:43- All done and dusted.- Cool.
0:28:44 > 0:28:48Today, they've been kept busy with a steady stream of surfers.
0:28:48 > 0:28:50Can't you just dab this?
0:28:52 > 0:28:55But some, like 26-year-old local lad Sean,
0:28:55 > 0:28:57haven't even managed to make it into the water.
0:29:00 > 0:29:02My name's Katie. How can I help?
0:29:04 > 0:29:05It's swollen up a bit.
0:29:05 > 0:29:08I don't know whether I'm just getting a bit panicky. I'm not sure.
0:29:10 > 0:29:14Sean was checking out the surf at Gwenver Beach half an hour ago,
0:29:14 > 0:29:15when the adder struck.
0:29:18 > 0:29:21He's been brought in by his mum and aunt.
0:29:22 > 0:29:23Yeah.
0:29:24 > 0:29:26LAUGHTER
0:29:28 > 0:29:31Adders are Britain's only venomous snakes.
0:29:31 > 0:29:34They're found across the UK, often in rough countryside.
0:29:37 > 0:29:40And in summer, the warmth brings these cold blooded creatures
0:29:40 > 0:29:41out into the open.
0:29:42 > 0:29:45This, combined with a well-camouflaged body,
0:29:45 > 0:29:49can mean bad news for an inattentive surfer in flip-flops.
0:29:49 > 0:29:52- Any nausea or vomiting or anything at all?- No.
0:29:52 > 0:29:56- Any aches or pains or anything anywhere else?- Uh, I don't know.
0:29:56 > 0:29:59- It's kind of feeling weird all coming up there, yeah.- OK.
0:29:59 > 0:30:01Not really... It doesn't hurt, it just feel numbish.
0:30:01 > 0:30:04I'll do your blood pressure in a minute, if that's OK.
0:30:07 > 0:30:10Blood pressure's up a little bit, but...
0:30:10 > 0:30:12it's understandable, really.
0:30:12 > 0:30:15- Are you in much pain at the moment? - No. Not really.
0:30:18 > 0:30:22Katie takes Sean for an ECG to check his heart.
0:30:22 > 0:30:24Any irregularities could be a sign
0:30:24 > 0:30:27he's suffering a serious allergic reaction.
0:30:31 > 0:30:35Are you all right to just take your top off there for me a second?
0:30:35 > 0:30:38- Have you had an ECG done before? - I don't think so.
0:30:38 > 0:30:41It doesn't hurt anything, just takes a couple of minutes, OK?
0:30:41 > 0:30:44Adders aren't aggressive so bites are rare,
0:30:44 > 0:30:47with roughly 100 a year reported.
0:30:48 > 0:30:52Severe reactions are uncommon, but the venom can cause a lot of pain.
0:30:55 > 0:30:59Dr Catriona Johnstone comes to check on Sean.
0:30:59 > 0:31:00- Hello there, Sean?- Yeah.
0:31:00 > 0:31:03I'm Catriona. Hello. I'm the doctor.
0:31:03 > 0:31:05- Did you see this thing that bit you? - Yeah.- Was it a big one?
0:31:08 > 0:31:09Where did he get you? Here?
0:31:09 > 0:31:11Oh, it's quite swollen, isn't it?
0:31:12 > 0:31:15I may need to pump the trolley up to allow it to tilt.
0:31:15 > 0:31:18- RATTLING - Oh, glory. It's the noisy one.
0:31:18 > 0:31:21LAUGHTER
0:31:22 > 0:31:24He said it doesn't matter.
0:31:24 > 0:31:28I can't possibly do this cos this one makes the most awful noise.
0:31:28 > 0:31:30You can hear it in Scotland.
0:31:30 > 0:31:31- It's fine.- It's fine, it's fine.
0:31:31 > 0:31:34RATTLING AND SQUEAKING
0:31:38 > 0:31:40LAUGHTER
0:31:42 > 0:31:44- Is it awfully tender?- Mm. - How are you feeling in yourself?
0:31:44 > 0:31:49I can feel it right up here, like, full-on. It's spread right up here.
0:31:49 > 0:31:51You know, that's where the glands are.
0:31:51 > 0:31:54If there's any trouble in the rest of your leg, any inflammation,
0:31:54 > 0:31:58- then that's where it tends to travel up the leg.- Yeah.
0:32:00 > 0:32:02The other lady said it was normal.
0:32:03 > 0:32:05Bend your knee for me.
0:32:05 > 0:32:07Just stretch your leg out a little bit.
0:32:09 > 0:32:12You don't look as though you've had a serious reaction so far.
0:32:12 > 0:32:14You'd be unlucky to, but sometimes it does happen.
0:32:18 > 0:32:20We're just going to keep an eye on him for a while
0:32:20 > 0:32:24in case he develops a reaction, an allergic reaction or anything,
0:32:24 > 0:32:25but so far, he looks pretty well.
0:32:25 > 0:32:28He was a bit... His heartbeat was quite rapid on admission.
0:32:30 > 0:32:33Sean settles in for an afternoon staring at the ceiling.
0:32:34 > 0:32:36- Are you feeling hot? - No, I'm all right.
0:32:36 > 0:32:38- Are you sure?- Yeah. - You're very pink.- Yeah?
0:32:38 > 0:32:39Around the face.
0:32:39 > 0:32:42His ECG results have just come through.
0:32:42 > 0:32:45I need to ask you, I was going to do blood tests,
0:32:45 > 0:32:49but did you have a problem with your heart before at all?
0:32:52 > 0:32:53Oh, that's what it is.
0:32:53 > 0:32:56- You've got a variation from the normal tracing on your heart.- OK.
0:32:56 > 0:32:59But we don't really need to worry about it if it's pre-existing, OK?
0:32:59 > 0:33:01- That makes sense now.- Yeah, yeah.
0:33:01 > 0:33:04- It's not going horribly fast or anything like that.- Yeah.
0:33:04 > 0:33:07- Did they keep an eye on you for a while when you were little?- Mm...
0:33:07 > 0:33:11Yes. He saw a specialist on a regular basis.
0:33:11 > 0:33:13One of the valves didn't close down full.
0:33:15 > 0:33:17I was worried initially about his heart tracing
0:33:17 > 0:33:19because it looked a bit abnormal,
0:33:19 > 0:33:22and that's why we were going to do some blood tests,
0:33:22 > 0:33:23just to follow up with that.
0:33:26 > 0:33:29All being well, hopefully he'll get home with instructions
0:33:29 > 0:33:32to sit with his leg elevated until it settles down a bit.
0:33:35 > 0:33:39Two hours later, Sean's finally free to go,
0:33:39 > 0:33:43his surfing plans - for now, at least - scuppered by a snake bite.
0:33:43 > 0:33:45It's been common here this year.
0:33:45 > 0:33:50I've only seen one other adder bite here in the last two years here,
0:33:50 > 0:33:53but you do read of them in the local paper and whatnot
0:33:53 > 0:33:55and I know my colleagues have seen a few as well.
0:33:57 > 0:34:00He's been well warned if he gets unwell to come back,
0:34:00 > 0:34:02so hopefully he won't have to.
0:34:10 > 0:34:14But the next day, there's a familiar face in the cubicles.
0:34:16 > 0:34:20Sean's back and his leg is still giving him gyp.
0:34:20 > 0:34:23It's looking quite swollen now, and that was fine yesterday.
0:34:23 > 0:34:26It's spreading... Well, it's spreading all up the leg, really.
0:34:26 > 0:34:30Nurse Richard Owen preps the ECG again.
0:34:30 > 0:34:31- Looking a bit flushed.- Yeah.
0:34:31 > 0:34:33- That normal for you?- Um...
0:34:33 > 0:34:36- Or is that too many days on the waves?- Maybe.
0:34:36 > 0:34:41It's Doctor Daisy Peters' turn to check on Sean.
0:34:41 > 0:34:45This is a little bit more swollen. That is to be expected, all right?
0:34:45 > 0:34:47You haven't got any loss of sensation,
0:34:47 > 0:34:49you haven't got any actual numbness.
0:34:49 > 0:34:50What the venom does is
0:34:50 > 0:34:52it causes things to bleed a little bit inside you,
0:34:52 > 0:34:55so it's unlikely that you're going to get a clot in your leg...
0:34:55 > 0:34:57- OK.- ..that would be causing major problems.
0:34:57 > 0:34:59It's more likely you'll get a bit of bleeding.
0:34:59 > 0:35:02- OK.- But you need to keep off your leg for a few days, OK?- OK.
0:35:02 > 0:35:04- You can sign yourself off work for up to a week.- OK.
0:35:04 > 0:35:07And if you need longer than that, then you can see the GP.
0:35:07 > 0:35:08- OK, then.- All right?- Yep.
0:35:11 > 0:35:14It's an awful long weekend. But, no, no...
0:35:15 > 0:35:17..West Cornwall are always fantastic.
0:35:19 > 0:35:23So, it's back home again with even stricter orders to rest the leg.
0:35:23 > 0:35:25I think it's always worth getting checked out.
0:35:25 > 0:35:27I mean, never been bitten before,
0:35:27 > 0:35:30don't even know anyone that has been bitten before,
0:35:30 > 0:35:34so, I mean, guessing it's lucky it happened in this country,
0:35:34 > 0:35:36not somewhere else more tropical.
0:35:37 > 0:35:40Sean's week ahead looks like a total wipe-out.
0:35:40 > 0:35:43The only surfing he'll be doing is on his mum's sofa.
0:35:44 > 0:35:46There's actually some good surf at the moment as well
0:35:46 > 0:35:50and the sun's shining, so...it's a bit annoying.
0:36:04 > 0:36:08460 miles north of Cornwall in Wolsingham Market Square,
0:36:08 > 0:36:09it's kicking-out time at the pubs.
0:36:15 > 0:36:19After spending the evening tackling underage drinkers,
0:36:19 > 0:36:22PC Geoff Moore has been called to an incident.
0:36:22 > 0:36:25And this time, it isn't drink related.
0:36:25 > 0:36:26We've come across because the paramedics
0:36:26 > 0:36:29have got out of the vehicle and they've been told
0:36:29 > 0:36:30that somebody's fallen over,
0:36:30 > 0:36:32so they're just going to administer first aid.
0:36:32 > 0:36:35So, we'll pop over there now and just see what the score is.
0:36:39 > 0:36:41Event paramedics are treating a woman
0:36:41 > 0:36:44who's tripped over some cabling and injured herself.
0:36:44 > 0:36:47I take nobody's been pushed or 'out like that?
0:36:47 > 0:36:48- No, no.- Just fallen over?
0:36:49 > 0:36:50Do you just live by yourself?
0:36:53 > 0:36:54The thing is...
0:36:56 > 0:36:57..with something like that,
0:36:57 > 0:36:59it might be worth going to get checked out.
0:37:03 > 0:37:05And I think, with something like that,
0:37:05 > 0:37:07I would prefer you to go and get checked out.
0:37:07 > 0:37:10Go and just get checked out by an ambulance, if that's OK.
0:37:11 > 0:37:14Because if you've hit your head and your nose is bleeding as well...
0:37:15 > 0:37:18I know, but with something like a head injury or something like that,
0:37:18 > 0:37:22you could go home later on tonight, feel dizzy and fall over.
0:37:22 > 0:37:26And I'd never forgive myself if something happened to you.
0:37:26 > 0:37:28When we attended, the lady was obviously
0:37:28 > 0:37:30in a little bit of distress on the ground,
0:37:30 > 0:37:32her face was covered in blood.
0:37:32 > 0:37:34There was the potential that she could have broken her knee.
0:37:34 > 0:37:38Not only that, but we believe she could have broken her nose as well.
0:37:40 > 0:37:43Yeah, would it be possible you could maybe call us an ambulance
0:37:43 > 0:37:45to Wolsingham marketplace?
0:37:45 > 0:37:48There's a lady who's fallen over on the slippery surface here.
0:37:50 > 0:37:53She's breathing, conscious and she's bleeding from her nose.
0:38:01 > 0:38:04An ambulance is en route, but it could be coming from Barnard Castle,
0:38:04 > 0:38:0620 miles away.
0:38:06 > 0:38:11It may be a long wait in the cold for 76-year-old Annabel.
0:38:11 > 0:38:12One, two, three.
0:38:12 > 0:38:15There we go. Oh.
0:38:15 > 0:38:18That's all right, we've got you. That's all right.
0:38:18 > 0:38:20We'll put this blanket round you to keep warm.
0:38:21 > 0:38:25So, at the moment, we've got her off the cold ground, cos it's raining,
0:38:25 > 0:38:27trying to keep her warm, wrapped her up in blankets.
0:38:27 > 0:38:29Obviously, the paramedics from the fair
0:38:29 > 0:38:31are attending to her until the ambulance turns up.
0:38:31 > 0:38:33Because of the nature of her injury,
0:38:33 > 0:38:36we're trying to raise her leg up to take a bit of pressure off it,
0:38:36 > 0:38:40so I've come into the nearest club to get a stool and just go back out
0:38:40 > 0:38:41and obviously administer some first aid.
0:38:44 > 0:38:47The ambulance will come from the nearest available station.
0:38:47 > 0:38:49Obviously, it's a Friday night, so it's busy everywhere
0:38:49 > 0:38:52in the whole of County Durham, so we just wait for one to come.
0:38:54 > 0:38:58Meanwhile, Annabel is kept warm by her knight in high-vis armour.
0:38:58 > 0:39:00- Here's our Geoff.- My very nice coat.
0:39:00 > 0:39:03- Here's our Geoff coming to your rescue.- Coming for you.
0:39:04 > 0:39:06Geoff? I'm your beat officer!
0:39:08 > 0:39:10The team are keen to move Annabel
0:39:10 > 0:39:13into the warmth of a nearby social club.
0:39:13 > 0:39:16Annabel, what were going to do is, me and Nick here,
0:39:16 > 0:39:18we're going to quite happily carry you into the club,
0:39:18 > 0:39:20if that's all right, so you can get out...
0:39:20 > 0:39:21Annabel, listen to me, right?
0:39:23 > 0:39:25Annabel, you've got two lovely, strapping police officers here
0:39:25 > 0:39:28who're going to carry you in. Is that all right?
0:39:31 > 0:39:32I know, but I don't know how long.
0:39:32 > 0:39:34That was our control room saying...
0:39:34 > 0:39:37No, no. I've had a word with Lillian. There's no problem.
0:39:37 > 0:39:39She's not going to lose his licence. I'm the beat officer!
0:39:41 > 0:39:43But Annabel doesn't want to cause a fuss.
0:39:45 > 0:39:46I know you're not cold,
0:39:46 > 0:39:49but obviously... You're not cold cos you've got all our coats on!
0:39:50 > 0:39:52She insists she can walk.
0:39:54 > 0:39:55Right?
0:39:55 > 0:39:59Neighbour Abigail saw her trip and has stayed to help.
0:39:59 > 0:40:01Don't put any weight on that leg.
0:40:01 > 0:40:04She's well known in the village. She's a lovely lady.
0:40:05 > 0:40:08I'm a nurse, I'm a trained nurse, so I'm going to go with her
0:40:08 > 0:40:09cos I don't want her to be on her own.
0:40:14 > 0:40:15It's typical Annabel.
0:40:15 > 0:40:20She's a very strong-minded lady and likes to do things on her own.
0:40:20 > 0:40:23But I'm not going to let her go on her own, to be fair.
0:40:23 > 0:40:26She's an elderly lady and needs somebody to go with her.
0:40:26 > 0:40:27That's it.
0:40:29 > 0:40:32After 50 minutes, the ambulance finally arrives.
0:40:32 > 0:40:34I'm enjoying this, mind, girls.
0:40:34 > 0:40:36- LAUGHTER - I'm enjoying this!
0:40:36 > 0:40:38I'm enjoying this, I am.
0:40:38 > 0:40:40- Shall we carry on, then?- Yes.
0:40:40 > 0:40:41LAUGHTER
0:40:41 > 0:40:44It's been having a good bleed, while we've been waiting.
0:40:44 > 0:40:46It hasn't affected your natural beauty, though.
0:40:46 > 0:40:48- How do you know? - LAUGHTER
0:40:48 > 0:40:51- You never saw me when I was... - I didn't, no.
0:40:51 > 0:40:52You'll have to show us some pictures.
0:40:54 > 0:40:56How do you feel at the minute?
0:40:56 > 0:40:58- I'm very tired.- Very tired.
0:40:58 > 0:40:59And it's hurting. It's hurting.
0:40:59 > 0:41:02- Can I just borrow your wrist for a minute?- Hurting.
0:41:07 > 0:41:09Don't worry about it.
0:41:09 > 0:41:11You're swearing enough to lock you up, man!
0:41:11 > 0:41:13LAUGHTER
0:41:13 > 0:41:15- I didn't say...- I know!
0:41:17 > 0:41:18Basically, we've got a duty of care,
0:41:18 > 0:41:21so to put our minds at rest, she's agreed to go off to hospital.
0:41:21 > 0:41:24She's going through to Durham Hospital.
0:41:24 > 0:41:27Luckily, one of her old neighbours is going to travel through with her,
0:41:27 > 0:41:28who happens to be a nurse,
0:41:28 > 0:41:30and then she's going to basically stay with her.
0:41:30 > 0:41:33Cos of the circumstances behind it and because it involves
0:41:33 > 0:41:36the allegation that she'd fallen over a cable at the funfair,
0:41:36 > 0:41:39basically, I've spoken to the funfair owner.
0:41:39 > 0:41:42He's going to notify the Health and Safety Executive.
0:41:42 > 0:41:44Thanks very much for coming through tonight.
0:41:44 > 0:41:45Much appreciated. All right, all right.
0:41:45 > 0:41:49And it seems Annabel's not the only one taking a trip.
0:41:49 > 0:41:50Puh!
0:41:50 > 0:41:52HE LAUGHS
0:41:56 > 0:42:00With revellers heading home and just a few stragglers left,
0:42:00 > 0:42:02it's the end of a hectic shift for Geoff
0:42:02 > 0:42:03and this small band of bobbies.
0:42:04 > 0:42:08I like to think that the shows, once they're finished,
0:42:08 > 0:42:11that's the summer over for the beat team.
0:42:11 > 0:42:13The show's gone quite well.
0:42:13 > 0:42:16There's been no arrests for any public order or anything like that.
0:42:16 > 0:42:19Luckily, like I say, nobody was badly injured
0:42:19 > 0:42:21and I'd like to think it was a successful show
0:42:21 > 0:42:24and people enjoyed themselves, which is what we want.
0:42:29 > 0:42:33It's been all go for the emergency services in Britain's rural areas.
0:42:34 > 0:42:37After collapsing at the beach, body boarder Andrew
0:42:37 > 0:42:39was given the all-clear and released from hospital.
0:42:41 > 0:42:43Doctors suspect his very low blood pressure
0:42:43 > 0:42:46could have been due to being too cold in the water.
0:42:48 > 0:42:51After falling at the Wolsingham Show funfair,
0:42:51 > 0:42:53Annabel was treated for a broken nose.
0:42:54 > 0:42:57And Geoff had a busy weekend dealing with more underage drinkers.
0:42:59 > 0:43:02And surfer Sean has recovered from his adder bite.
0:43:02 > 0:43:04After nearly treading on another one,
0:43:04 > 0:43:07he's now paying a bit more attention,
0:43:07 > 0:43:08a relief to the adders of Cornwall.
0:43:10 > 0:43:13And you thought it was quite in the countryside.
