0:04:34 > 0:04:36and we're taking the problem of drugs supply and use

0:04:36 > 0:04:39seriously here at Tenbury.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01she'll indicate on the person.

0:05:01 > 0:05:03And then we will then decide

0:05:06 > 0:05:08and perhaps conduct a search.

0:05:12 > 0:05:15With Nick are three PCs and two special constables.

0:05:17 > 0:05:19Just because of the safety aspect

0:05:19 > 0:05:21and people being under the influence of alcohol,

0:05:21 > 0:05:25we just need to have enough bobbies to be able to make sure

0:06:11 > 0:06:16She's got a very good nose and it's very useful in this sort of work.

0:06:17 > 0:06:19If only she could talk

0:06:19 > 0:06:20and drive a car.

0:06:24 > 0:06:28The officers hit the pubs on Tenbury's main street first.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32Go and have a word with them, make sure everything's OK,

0:06:32 > 0:06:35and then hopefully reassure the public

0:06:35 > 0:06:37that, you know, the police are about

0:06:37 > 0:06:40and we take a hard line on drugs.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45While some enter through one door...

0:14:55 > 0:14:59Isabel, it seems, has inherited that no-nonsense attitude.

0:16:43 > 0:16:45Drug use! Are you having a laugh?

0:16:45 > 0:16:49We're just trying to do something about it. Just doing our job.

0:16:49 > 0:16:52Some of the customers fear their local's being targeted.

0:16:52 > 0:16:55PC Nick Prosser reassures them.

0:16:55 > 0:16:58- OK. We're just doing our job. - OK. I beg your pardon.

0:16:58 > 0:17:01- All right. No probs. - OK, I'm sorry.- No probs.

0:17:03 > 0:17:06Poppy's given the all clear on the drugs front.

0:17:07 > 0:17:10What we're going to do is we're going to go back to the car

0:17:10 > 0:17:13and just add another pub on the list. One at the top of the town.

0:17:15 > 0:17:19We got a little bit of hostility in the one pub

0:17:19 > 0:17:24but our main purpose, if you like, is to reassure people

0:17:24 > 0:17:27that we're about and that's exactly what we've done tonight.

0:17:27 > 0:17:30Their next pub is up town.

0:17:30 > 0:17:33It's where, on Saturday nights, you get all the partygoers.

0:17:33 > 0:17:34It's a little lively.

0:17:34 > 0:17:36We'll crack on. We'll see what we've got.

0:17:40 > 0:17:44Poppy and dog handler PC Ade Hunting do a sweep.

0:17:52 > 0:17:55And it's not long before Poppy takes an interest in someone.

0:18:00 > 0:18:02Just searching around the local pubs, OK?

0:18:02 > 0:18:04The dog's indicated on you

0:18:04 > 0:18:06that she's quite interested in smells around your...

0:18:06 > 0:18:08Have you got anything on you?

0:18:08 > 0:18:11Have you been around any controlled drugs?

0:18:12 > 0:18:14Little bit of weed.

0:18:14 > 0:18:18I'm PC Nick Prosser, all right, from Tenbury police station, all right?

0:18:18 > 0:18:19I'm detaining you at the moment

0:18:19 > 0:18:21under Section 23 Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.

0:18:21 > 0:18:25The reasons for that is because a passive drugs dog has indicated

0:18:25 > 0:18:28by the side of you that they're very interested in your pocket, OK?

0:18:28 > 0:18:30For those reasons, you're just detained,

0:18:30 > 0:18:32just the purposes of the search, OK?

0:18:32 > 0:18:34We'll take you somewhere a little bit more private

0:18:34 > 0:18:37and we'll just have a chat about what you've disclosed to us

0:18:37 > 0:18:42- is in your pocket. Is that all right?- Yeah, that's fine.

0:18:42 > 0:18:45The man's admitted to carrying a small amount of cannabis.

0:18:45 > 0:18:48The dog walked past a gentleman sat at the bar

0:18:48 > 0:18:51and basically did a double take, went back and checked

0:18:51 > 0:18:55and she was quite positive in what she was trying to tell me,

0:18:55 > 0:18:57so we had a chat with the gentleman,

0:18:57 > 0:19:01he disclosed he had some controlled drugs on him

0:19:01 > 0:19:03and Nick's just talking to him now.

0:19:03 > 0:19:07Listen, we've got a job to do, all right? I'm not judging you.

0:19:12 > 0:19:15I appreciate your honesty. Thanks very much for that.

0:19:15 > 0:19:17I just rewarded the dog there

0:19:17 > 0:19:21because I saw that Nick had got some drugs there

0:19:21 > 0:19:22so I was able to reward her

0:19:22 > 0:19:25so that she knows she's done a good job, basically.

0:19:25 > 0:19:29In this case, I've given her her ball.

0:19:29 > 0:19:31You happy to come down to the station next week

0:19:31 > 0:19:34and we'll just have a quick chat about that?

0:19:34 > 0:19:37No, that's cool. We can do that. That's not an issue.

0:19:41 > 0:19:43Just seized a very small amount of cannabis.

0:19:43 > 0:19:45It's properly only £5-6 worth.

0:19:45 > 0:19:48There's not a great deal, but it's a positive.

0:19:48 > 0:19:50It shows she knows what she's doing.

0:19:50 > 0:19:52It is a good result and we'll seize that and interview him next week.

0:19:52 > 0:19:54We've got his details now.

0:19:56 > 0:19:58It's just sending out a great message.

0:19:58 > 0:20:01We've obviously got a positive.

0:20:01 > 0:20:02So it's a good result.

0:20:05 > 0:20:08They haven't found any class-A drugs,

0:20:08 > 0:20:11but the operation sent out an important message.

0:20:13 > 0:20:14It's only a small amount,

0:20:14 > 0:20:17but at least everybody in Tenbury's going to know

0:20:17 > 0:20:18we've been around with the drugs dog

0:20:18 > 0:20:21and that we've seized a little bit of cannabis -

0:20:21 > 0:20:22it'll soon be round the town.

0:20:22 > 0:20:25It'll probably go a little quiet, I would suggest, the next few weeks,

0:20:25 > 0:20:27possibly leading up to Christmas.

0:20:46 > 0:20:48From Scotland's highest peaks...

0:20:52 > 0:20:53..to Northern Ireland...

0:20:56 > 0:20:58..and the Lake District.

0:21:01 > 0:21:06Every day, HMS Gannet scrambles its Search and Rescue helicopters

0:21:06 > 0:21:10in order to save lives in some of Britain's most remote locations.

0:21:12 > 0:21:14Today, a call's come in.

0:21:17 > 0:21:20The crew must transport a critically ill patient to Glasgow.

0:21:35 > 0:21:38The driver of a coach tour visiting the island

0:21:38 > 0:21:40has had a cardiac arrest behind the wheel,

0:21:40 > 0:21:42with 40 tourists on board.

0:21:51 > 0:21:55Flying today are pilots James Bullock and NV Hammond...

0:21:59 > 0:22:04..winchman paramedic Taff Ashman and observer Richie Lightfoot.

0:22:13 > 0:22:15From their base in Prestwick,

0:22:15 > 0:22:19they're flying 130 miles to Broadford on the Isle of Skye.

0:22:21 > 0:22:23But first, they have to pick up

0:22:23 > 0:22:26a specialist emergency medical retrieval team from Glasgow.

0:22:49 > 0:22:53The retrieval team includes consultant doctor Neil McMahon,

0:22:53 > 0:22:56who'll supervise the casualty's transfer.

0:22:56 > 0:22:58His heart stopped.

0:22:58 > 0:23:00He's required CPR and defibrillation,

0:23:00 > 0:23:02so electric shocks to restart his heart.

0:23:02 > 0:23:05And he's now... His heart is beating and he is breathing,

0:23:05 > 0:23:08but he's deeply unconscious as a result of that cardiac arrest,

0:23:08 > 0:23:10so he needs his airway secured

0:23:10 > 0:23:13and he needs transferred to a specialist cardiology centre,

0:23:13 > 0:23:16which will be the Golden Jubilee Hospital in Clydebank.

0:23:16 > 0:23:17And our job is to get him there

0:23:17 > 0:23:20in the best physiological state possible.

0:23:20 > 0:23:22Bear right.

0:23:22 > 0:23:25- You are now...feet wet.- Roger.

0:23:25 > 0:23:28With only 25 beds, the hospital on the Isle of Skye

0:23:28 > 0:23:31has limited resources for specialist cardiac treatment.

0:23:32 > 0:23:36Relatively common, obviously, cardiac arrest.

0:23:36 > 0:23:39There's at least one in the west of Scotland every day.

0:23:39 > 0:23:42And, obviously, if that happens close to a metropolitan hospital,

0:23:42 > 0:23:44a city centre - Glasgow, for example -

0:23:44 > 0:23:46then you'll be treated by local staff and paramedics

0:23:46 > 0:23:48first of all, and then the hospital staff.

0:23:48 > 0:23:53But because remote and rural places don't have intensive care units

0:23:53 > 0:23:58and easy access to cardiac catheterisation labs, etc,

0:23:58 > 0:24:00then, actually, transport for them becomes...

0:24:00 > 0:24:04a transfer becomes more of a challenge and more important.

0:24:04 > 0:24:06The crew sets course for Skye.

0:24:15 > 0:24:18There's concern about the weather.

0:24:18 > 0:24:21But this being Scotland, it can change in an instant.

0:24:49 > 0:24:51Pilots Bullock and Hammond

0:24:51 > 0:24:53familiarise themselves with the landmarks.

0:25:12 > 0:25:14An hour after leaving Glasgow,

0:25:14 > 0:25:16Gannet lands near the hospital on Skye.

0:25:30 > 0:25:32Over two and a half hours ago,

0:25:32 > 0:25:3666-year-old Terence's heart had stopped beating entirely.

0:25:38 > 0:25:41To keep this guy stable during the flight,

0:25:41 > 0:25:44he's effectively going to be put in an induced coma.

0:25:44 > 0:25:49So he's being kept unconscious and he's on a ventilator,

0:25:49 > 0:25:51so the machine is breathing for him.

0:25:51 > 0:25:55And he's obviously going to be wired up to a defib monitor throughout.

0:25:59 > 0:26:01Terence's condition is life-threatening.

0:26:01 > 0:26:04They need to get him to the chopper now.

0:26:24 > 0:26:26In Worcestershire...

0:26:31 > 0:26:33..PC Nick Prosser of West Mercia Police

0:26:33 > 0:26:36is back on his beat in the town of Tenbury.

0:26:40 > 0:26:43Nick believes there's been a recent increase

0:26:43 > 0:26:46in illegal drug use in town, and he's cracking down on it.

0:26:46 > 0:26:49Seized a very small amount of cannabis.

0:26:49 > 0:26:52It's probably only £5, £6 worth there.

0:26:52 > 0:26:55There's not a great deal, but it's a positive, it is a good result,

0:26:55 > 0:26:57and we'll seize that and interview him next week.

0:26:57 > 0:26:59We'll get his details now.

0:27:01 > 0:27:04It's nearly 11pm.

0:27:04 > 0:27:06Thursday night in this rural market town.

0:27:06 > 0:27:08Things look quiet.

0:27:09 > 0:27:12Until Nick spies something suspicious.

0:27:12 > 0:27:14Oh, he HAS shot off.

0:27:15 > 0:27:21It's just a small little motorbike that's left an address

0:27:21 > 0:27:26where we believe that cannabis might be being sold from,

0:27:26 > 0:27:28so we're just going to have a...

0:27:28 > 0:27:31a chat with this guy in a minute, pull him over.

0:27:36 > 0:27:41We followed the motorbike, did a check on the registration,

0:27:41 > 0:27:43and it came back to an individual

0:27:43 > 0:27:46who I had my suspicions about that might be using cannabis.

0:27:48 > 0:27:50He indicates to the rider to pull over.

0:27:54 > 0:27:57Fella, do you want to pull over on the petrol station?

0:27:57 > 0:27:59Pull over on the petrol station.

0:28:08 > 0:28:11Thank you, 1189 to move and check, Teme Street, Tenbury.

0:28:16 > 0:28:20- I do know your mate that you've just been to.- Yeah.- OK?

0:28:21 > 0:28:24And the reason why I'm stopping you, I've got suspicions

0:28:24 > 0:28:28that there might be cannabis being used at that address.

0:28:28 > 0:28:31- OK, and you've just come from there, haven't you?- Yeah.- OK.

0:28:31 > 0:28:33So for that reason, at the moment,

0:28:33 > 0:28:36you're detained under Section 23 of the Misuse of Drugs Act, all right?

0:28:36 > 0:28:40- So for the purposes of a search, do you understand that?- Yeah.

0:28:40 > 0:28:42What you need to know is who I am, all right?

0:28:42 > 0:28:44I'm PC 1189, Nick Prosser.

0:28:44 > 0:28:46I'm attached to Tenbury Police Station,

0:28:46 > 0:28:47one of the local bobbies here.

0:28:47 > 0:28:49- Yeah.- All right?

0:28:49 > 0:28:51Are you happy with why I'm detaining you at the moment?

0:28:51 > 0:28:53You've just come from an address

0:28:53 > 0:28:55where I believe drugs are being used from.

0:28:55 > 0:28:57- Yeah, that's fine. - Have you got any cannabis on you?

0:28:57 > 0:28:59- I do, yeah. - You have got some on you? OK.

0:28:59 > 0:29:02- How much have you got on you? - Just one...

0:29:02 > 0:29:05- Just a gram?- Yeah... Well, not even that.- OK.

0:29:05 > 0:29:07- Take your helmet off for me, buddy, please.- Yeah.

0:29:07 > 0:29:09Is it on you, or is it on or in the bike somewhere?

0:29:09 > 0:29:12- No, it's in my pocket... It's in my pocket, mate.- OK.

0:29:18 > 0:29:21How much is there? Ten quid's worth? Is it just a gram, is it?

0:29:21 > 0:29:23Not even that, mate. It's just the tiniest bit.

0:29:23 > 0:29:25Nick seizes the cannabis....

0:29:27 > 0:29:29..and searches for more.

0:29:29 > 0:29:33- Appreciate you being honest with me. - That's OK, mate.- All right?

0:29:33 > 0:29:36- I knew you were going to stop me, anyway.- How did you know that?

0:29:36 > 0:29:38- Cos I just heard.- You heard?

0:29:38 > 0:29:41I heard that... Yeah, that you were stopping people.

0:29:43 > 0:29:48News has been getting around town about Nick's recent drugs crackdown.

0:29:48 > 0:29:50Certainly, he'd obviously heard of me

0:29:50 > 0:29:52and that we were stopping people for drugs round here,

0:29:52 > 0:29:54which we do a lot of.

0:29:54 > 0:29:55We try to stay on top of it,

0:29:55 > 0:29:58cos we do have a problem with it round here, in particular cannabis.

0:29:58 > 0:30:00So it sends a clear message out.

0:30:00 > 0:30:02But we'll deal with him in the back of the car now,

0:30:02 > 0:30:05and then we'll take it from there.

0:30:06 > 0:30:07You need to be aware, mate,

0:30:07 > 0:30:10I'm blitzing this town on drugs at the moment,

0:30:10 > 0:30:14and I will deal with everybody that's using drugs in this town.

0:30:14 > 0:30:16All right?

0:30:16 > 0:30:19You've heard that we've been stopping people for a good reason.

0:30:19 > 0:30:21Have you smoked some dope tonight? Cos your eyes do look pretty big.

0:30:23 > 0:30:26The suspect was driving his motorbike,

0:30:26 > 0:30:28so there could be another charge.

0:30:28 > 0:30:32He's admitted that he's smoked a small amount of cannabis,

0:30:32 > 0:30:35and he's been riding on his bike,

0:30:35 > 0:30:37so he could be unfit through drink or drugs.

0:30:37 > 0:30:39OK, fella.

0:30:41 > 0:30:45At the moment, as of 11.10,

0:30:45 > 0:30:48you are under arrest on suspicion of possession of cannabis,

0:30:48 > 0:30:52and also suspicion of riding your motorbike while being unfit.

0:30:52 > 0:30:55- OK, do you understand that?- Yeah. - You do not have to say anything.

0:30:55 > 0:30:58It may harm your defence if you do not mention now something which you later rely on in court.

0:30:58 > 0:31:02Anything you do say may be given in evidence. Do you understand that?

0:31:02 > 0:31:06Driving under the influence of cannabis is a more serious offence

0:31:06 > 0:31:09than possessing a small amount of the drug.

0:31:12 > 0:31:14The suspect could have posed a danger to himself

0:31:14 > 0:31:16and other road users.

0:31:20 > 0:31:22Right now, Nick must take him over 20 miles

0:31:22 > 0:31:25to Hereford Police Station for testing.

0:31:26 > 0:31:29You've got about...

0:31:29 > 0:31:32probably about a 25-minute drive to Hereford custody now,

0:31:32 > 0:31:37where there'll be a... a road policing unit waiting

0:31:37 > 0:31:40so they can carry out the appropriate test.

0:31:40 > 0:31:43Try and find out how much cannabis is in his system.

0:31:43 > 0:31:45We'll deal with that offence at custody,

0:31:45 > 0:31:47and possession of the cannabis.

0:32:00 > 0:32:03PC Leon Symms tests him for cannabis use.

0:32:11 > 0:32:12OK.

0:32:14 > 0:32:16Test is positive for cannabis,

0:32:16 > 0:32:19so it'll be a doctor to come out and take a blood sample.

0:32:20 > 0:32:23Like drunk driving, driving while unfit due to cannabis use

0:32:23 > 0:32:25is only prosecuted

0:32:25 > 0:32:28if a certain level of the drug is found in the blood.

0:32:29 > 0:32:31So next is a blood test.

0:32:31 > 0:32:34I've had plenty of drink drivers, but not drug drivers,

0:32:34 > 0:32:37so, yeah, it's the first one in the bin for me.

0:32:37 > 0:32:38The Chief Constable's tasked us

0:32:38 > 0:32:41with trying to reduce deaths on the road.

0:32:41 > 0:32:44Obviously, cannabis has been found in his saliva

0:32:44 > 0:32:47so, yeah, it's a good result,

0:32:47 > 0:32:50and the roads are slightly safer tonight in Tenbury.

0:33:10 > 0:33:13In Scotland, on the Isle of Skye...

0:33:20 > 0:33:23..the crew of Royal Navy Search and Rescue unit HMS Gannet

0:33:23 > 0:33:26have rushed to a man who suffered a sudden heart attack

0:33:26 > 0:33:29while driving a coach full of tourists.

0:33:36 > 0:33:39At Dr MacKinnon Memorial Hospital in the town of Broadford,

0:33:39 > 0:33:44Gannet paramedic Taff Ashman is about to help transfer the casualty.

0:33:46 > 0:33:4866-year-old Terence.

0:33:49 > 0:33:54The guy was a bus driver that was up taking a sort of tour group.

0:33:54 > 0:33:58He's taken unwell, I believe at the wheel of the bus,

0:33:58 > 0:34:00so when they've got him out of the bus,

0:34:00 > 0:34:02he's gone into cardiac arrest.

0:34:02 > 0:34:05There just so happened to be a medic who was passing.

0:34:06 > 0:34:09- Thank you.- See you later.

0:34:09 > 0:34:13At the roadside, Terence's heart stopped beating.

0:34:13 > 0:34:16Incredibly, local ambulance technician Hamish Robertson

0:34:16 > 0:34:17was driving past

0:34:17 > 0:34:20and stopped in his patient transport vehicle.

0:34:21 > 0:34:24There was a man lying on the side of the road,

0:34:24 > 0:34:26on his side, not breathing.

0:34:26 > 0:34:28His colour was blue.

0:34:28 > 0:34:30There was people round about him trying to help him.

0:34:30 > 0:34:35I then got my kit from the vehicle, cleared his airway,

0:34:35 > 0:34:39applied a defibrillator to him and gave him five shocks.

0:34:39 > 0:34:41And, eventually, he started breathing again

0:34:41 > 0:34:43and his heart started working.

0:34:45 > 0:34:50His heart restarted, but still unconscious and in a critical state,

0:34:50 > 0:34:53Terence was transferred by ambulance to the hospital here on Skye.

0:34:58 > 0:35:01He's been brought into A & E on the island

0:35:01 > 0:35:04and we're now going to package him up

0:35:04 > 0:35:06and take him back down to intensive care in Glasgow.
