0:01:53 > 0:01:55APPLAUSE

0:02:25 > 0:02:27- So, just a wee...- That'll be grand.

0:02:27 > 0:02:30- So, Thursday week?- Thursday week. - That's grand. See you. Bye.

0:03:11 > 0:03:14LOW CHATTER

0:03:54 > 0:03:56Marketing is a big...

0:03:56 > 0:03:58a key issue.

0:04:34 > 0:04:38TRADITIONAL MUSIC PLAYS

0:05:46 > 0:05:51- I'm from the Acosta School of Music in New York.- Wonderful!

0:06:18 > 0:06:21'They've been very open and honest, the people that we've met.

0:06:21 > 0:06:24'They let you know. You could get a picture that it's all great'

0:06:24 > 0:06:25and there's no problems,

0:06:25 > 0:06:28but when they tell you such and such a thing might happen

0:06:28 > 0:06:31or, "This was a disaster," or, "I wish you hadn't done that,"

0:06:31 > 0:06:33that makes a wild difference.

0:06:56 > 0:06:59They had a problem with some of the campsites,

0:06:59 > 0:07:01so hopefully we won't have that in Derry.

0:07:01 > 0:07:05We've been ahead of the game, cos we've known we're getting the Fleadh,

0:07:05 > 0:07:08to think out the possibilities of where we could have the campsites.

0:07:08 > 0:07:12So, overall, it's just getting an opportunity to be here at the Fleadh,

0:07:12 > 0:07:17here, and see, overall, all the things we have to do next year.

0:09:20 > 0:09:23ROCK MUSIC PLAYS

0:11:02 > 0:11:04MUSIC: "The Sash"

0:11:58 > 0:12:02So, what we're going to do tonight, we're going to make a presentation

0:12:02 > 0:12:04on some of the history and the culture

0:12:04 > 0:12:06of the marching band tradition

0:12:06 > 0:12:08but concentrating on the flute bands,

0:12:08 > 0:12:12to give people a better idea of a tradition

0:12:12 > 0:12:16that sometimes, as we would say, can be misrepresented.

0:12:22 > 0:12:25Over the last couple of months, there's been an engagement with the Fleadh.

0:12:25 > 0:12:27I suppose, in our community,

0:12:27 > 0:12:30the Fleadh is one of these things that's been...

0:12:30 > 0:12:33It's almost like a lot of people think it should be avoided

0:12:33 > 0:12:36and protested against, or whatever,

0:12:36 > 0:12:39but I mean we've begun to understand it's big music,

0:12:39 > 0:12:41and our bands are big music.

0:12:57 > 0:13:00I can hardly get the high notes on it.

0:13:00 > 0:13:03- You have to bring it in a bit. - That's what I was going to tell you,

0:13:03 > 0:13:06but you already know. I don't need to tell you.

0:13:16 > 0:13:18I think we're starting to wake up to the fact

0:13:18 > 0:13:21- that we are much more the same than we are different.- Aye.

0:13:21 > 0:13:24And that's a direction I want to take.

0:13:24 > 0:13:26- I'm open to taking... - That's unbelievable.

0:13:59 > 0:14:03I'm a member of the Pride of the Orange and Blue Auld Boys in Newbuildings.

0:14:03 > 0:14:06I'm also a committee member of the Londonderry Bands' Forum,

0:14:06 > 0:14:10and I can see nothing but positivity coming out of this

0:14:10 > 0:14:15for the Fleadh, plus ourselves. And I think that,

0:14:15 > 0:14:18if it happens, it'll be a good thing for the city, on the whole.

0:14:41 > 0:14:45We have been in possession of the Galway hooker for quite a few years,

0:14:45 > 0:14:49but it's been out of the water for several years, lying in dry dock,

0:14:49 > 0:14:53so we're hoping to secure the funding before the Fleadh to make the boat seaworthy again.

0:14:53 > 0:14:57So I'm in the process of getting quotations and then sending off an application

0:14:57 > 0:15:00with the aim to getting the Galway hooker into the water

0:15:00 > 0:15:03for around May or June, so we can use it during the Fleadh

0:15:03 > 0:15:05to sail up and down the Foyle,

0:15:05 > 0:15:09more as a visual spectacle, to enhance the overall festival.

0:15:09 > 0:15:10It won't be open for passengers,

0:15:10 > 0:15:14but there will be people sailing on the Foyle.

0:15:25 > 0:15:28First impression is it seems to have dried out a lot

0:15:28 > 0:15:30since the last time I saw it.

0:15:30 > 0:15:33You can see the cracks straight on through, which is the problem,

0:15:33 > 0:15:36because it's been out of the water so long it's dried out,

0:15:36 > 0:15:39and it's all separate planks. They're all contracted,

0:15:39 > 0:15:43so that means it leaves these gaps that open up in between...

0:15:43 > 0:15:46which means that if it goes in the water, water will get in,

0:15:46 > 0:15:49so it will need to be corked up and put in the water so it can expand

0:15:49 > 0:15:53and close again. So, obviously, here...it's pretty rotted,

0:15:53 > 0:15:56so this will all need to be replaced.

0:15:56 > 0:16:00You can just hear... That's completely rotted through, that one.

0:16:00 > 0:16:03It'll all have to be taken off and replaced.

0:16:15 > 0:16:18The company that's supposed to be fixing the boat up

0:16:18 > 0:16:22have another few orders in before us, so we've been delayed in them,

0:16:22 > 0:16:24so that's pushing us back,

0:16:24 > 0:16:27so something needs to be decided in the next week or two,

0:16:27 > 0:16:31whether they can do it within the timeframe or not.

0:16:31 > 0:16:33We'll have to look at other options.

0:16:33 > 0:16:36Hopefully, this Friday, they're getting back to me,

0:16:36 > 0:16:39to say whether they can do it or not.

0:17:11 > 0:17:14CHEEPING Ooh!

0:17:30 > 0:17:34# No dear, I don't know why

0:17:34 > 0:17:37# No dear, I don't know why. #

0:18:55 > 0:18:57Aw, he's so cute!

0:18:57 > 0:18:59Can I pet him?

0:18:59 > 0:19:02He's just a wee bit feared, that's all, but touch him.

0:19:02 > 0:19:05CHICK CHEEPS

0:19:29 > 0:19:32This is the second year of the festival

0:19:32 > 0:19:34and there's a range of events on -

0:19:34 > 0:19:36concerts and workshops.

0:19:38 > 0:19:42We've got a double-headline performance tonight

0:19:42 > 0:19:44with Dave Munnelly and Morga,

0:19:44 > 0:19:46and Steve Cooney's joining us.

0:19:46 > 0:19:49Steve's actually here doing a guitar workshop,

0:19:49 > 0:19:52as are a number of other well-known musicians.

0:19:52 > 0:19:55They're tutoring workshops. Lisa Kelly's doing the harp.

0:20:47 > 0:20:50It's my first time here. It's a beautiful building.

0:20:50 > 0:20:53I'm highly impressed with the architecture.

0:20:53 > 0:20:57I've heard great reports about this room, acoustically.

0:20:57 > 0:21:00The acoustics are supposed to be very good,

0:21:00 > 0:21:03so I'm looking forward to testing that out tonight.

0:21:51 > 0:21:53Ready...and...

0:21:56 > 0:21:58Last year's numbers were good,

0:21:58 > 0:22:01but I can see the increase in the numbers in the workshops

0:22:01 > 0:22:05and the fact that tonight's concert, the tickets are all sold out as well,

0:22:05 > 0:22:09so it is taking on a bit of momentum from last year,

0:22:09 > 0:22:13because you have a good experience and know what to expect -

0:22:13 > 0:22:16they're going to come and get great workshops, great music,

0:22:16 > 0:22:19so I do notice an increase in numbers and that's what you want,

0:22:19 > 0:22:21so we're happy with that as well.

0:22:21 > 0:22:24MAN LILTS

0:22:27 > 0:22:30LILTING CONTINUES

0:23:08 > 0:23:10LILTING RESTARTS

0:23:16 > 0:23:19GUITAR PLAYS

0:23:32 > 0:23:34# Mary, dear... #

0:23:34 > 0:23:39I was playing, the year before last actually, at the Cavan Fleadh

0:23:39 > 0:23:43and I think Martin Donoghue did a great job there in Cavan

0:23:43 > 0:23:45over the last two years,

0:23:45 > 0:23:48particularly getting musicians from different disciplines in.

0:23:48 > 0:23:50I did a lot of cross-border cross-cultural work.

0:23:50 > 0:23:54There was one great evening with Willie Drennan playing the Lambeg,

0:23:54 > 0:23:57and a gang of musicians from Antrim,

0:23:57 > 0:24:01and the bringing together of the different cultures

0:24:01 > 0:24:03I thought was very successful.

0:24:03 > 0:24:06I think Martin has put a lot of work into that,

0:24:06 > 0:24:08so I think he's raised the game,

0:24:08 > 0:24:11and it'd be interesting to see now how Derry delivers

0:24:11 > 0:24:15and the surprises that are in store. I'm sure there'll be great things here.

0:24:15 > 0:24:19# But how cruel me father will be

0:24:20 > 0:24:22# To banish me darling

0:24:22 > 0:24:25# Far away from thee

0:24:26 > 0:24:29# And I'll leave them all

0:24:29 > 0:24:32# And I'll go with thee

0:24:33 > 0:24:41# Me bold, undaunted soldier... #

0:24:46 > 0:24:48Brilliant.

0:24:48 > 0:24:50APPLAUSE

0:24:52 > 0:24:54This is Kevin's birthday.

0:24:54 > 0:24:58And he loved his birthday. And he loved...

0:24:58 > 0:25:00APPLAUSE

0:25:00 > 0:25:04He loved a real excuse to have all his friends

0:25:04 > 0:25:07and family all together

0:25:07 > 0:25:09and have one big session,

0:25:09 > 0:25:11so this weekend has been one big session...

0:25:11 > 0:25:14'The Fleadh, obviously, is the big event of this year,

0:25:14 > 0:25:17'and it's really down to Kevin

0:25:17 > 0:25:20'because he was the one that spearheaded us all'

0:25:20 > 0:25:22to just keep going for it.

0:25:22 > 0:25:24But we're looking towards the legacy.

0:25:24 > 0:25:27The legacy's what this year's all about,

0:25:27 > 0:25:30and the legacy's what we were going to do next year,

0:25:30 > 0:25:33so the Fleadh will definitely be growing for next year,

0:25:33 > 0:25:37so whilst the Fleadh's here, and it's great,

0:25:37 > 0:25:40we've other things that we intend to grow on

0:25:40 > 0:25:42throughout the years ahead.

0:25:55 > 0:25:58I remembered that among the people that Kevin

0:25:58 > 0:26:03brought to Derry on a regular basis was Len Graham and Joe Holmes,

0:26:03 > 0:26:07and they actually performed their last concert together here in Derry

0:26:07 > 0:26:10just after Christmas, I think it was 1977,

0:26:10 > 0:26:13and this was one of the songs that they used to sing.

0:26:13 > 0:26:15I'll just give it a quick burst.

0:26:15 > 0:26:17# Here I am amongst yous

0:26:17 > 0:26:20# And I'm here because I'm here

0:26:20 > 0:26:22# And I'm only 12 months older

0:26:22 > 0:26:25# Than I was this time last year... #

0:27:00 > 0:27:03I feel like I'm the Fleadh coming over the border.

0:27:03 > 0:27:06It's so positive in so many different ways.

0:27:06 > 0:27:10I mean, it's just one of those things that maybe might have been unheard of

0:27:10 > 0:27:12a few years ago, the All-Ireland Fleadh,

0:27:12 > 0:27:16and I think it's just a great thing for everybody involved.

0:27:26 > 0:27:28We're good.
