0:00:05 > 0:00:12The Gower Peninsula. 70 square miles of raw, natural beauty.

0:00:12 > 0:00:16Only minutes from the industry and commerce of Swansea

0:00:16 > 0:00:20and Port Talbot, the wild beaches and country lanes

0:00:20 > 0:00:24are a magnet for over three million visitors per year.

0:00:24 > 0:00:26There's an island mentality here.

0:00:26 > 0:00:30Gower people don't like to be told what to do or what not to do.

0:00:30 > 0:00:35Traditional farming is dying out and landowners have to adapt to survive.

0:00:35 > 0:00:38I have the sheepdog and all that,

0:00:38 > 0:00:41but times are changing and you have to go

0:00:41 > 0:00:43and seize the opportunity, really.

0:00:43 > 0:00:47The Gower Society is dead set on conservation.

0:00:47 > 0:00:50If we don't respect it, we may as well kick it into touch totally

0:00:50 > 0:00:55and turn the whole of Gower over to some sort of scene park.

0:00:55 > 0:00:59But locals say Gower shouldn't become a museum either.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02We're not slating anybody off here.

0:01:02 > 0:01:04But at the end of the day,

0:01:04 > 0:01:07local people have to have local work and money.

0:01:07 > 0:01:11And people here can be fiercely private, but as a year

0:01:11 > 0:01:15on the peninsula unfolds we are witness to events both everyday...

0:01:15 > 0:01:19When does it have to be made? Is it the same morning?

0:01:19 > 0:01:21Cos cucumber gets soggy.

0:01:21 > 0:01:23..and highly personal.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26Because it was Dad, I really panicked.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28I really thought he was dying.

0:01:28 > 0:01:32This land inspires conflict in those who want to make a living here

0:01:32 > 0:01:34and those who want to conserve it.

0:01:34 > 0:01:40But everyone agrees Gower is both extraordinary and unique.

0:01:58 > 0:02:03The Gower Peninsula juts 22 miles into the Bristol Channel.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06It has its own mild microclimate,

0:02:06 > 0:02:09but the weather can change like the direction of the sea breeze.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13The water can become treacherous.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16It's this constant dance of the elements

0:02:16 > 0:02:20that draws many of the people who choose to live here.

0:02:22 > 0:02:26It's a beautiful part of the world. Life is pretty good.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29We live by the sea, we are lucky enough to have a nice view,

0:02:29 > 0:02:33go in the water for a swim or go boating whenever we want.

0:02:33 > 0:02:36The Gower Peninsula is a wonderful place to live.

0:02:36 > 0:02:40Lawrie Grove and his family have always been involved with the sea.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43They've been in Horton for generations.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46Gower has a way of calling to its own.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49The place is so nice that a lot of us do come back.

0:02:49 > 0:02:53My brother was in the Merchant Navy, I was in the Royal Navy,

0:02:53 > 0:02:56my father was in the Merchant Navy during the war,

0:02:56 > 0:02:58but Gower has that draw on people.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01Lawrie, like many local people, not only takes

0:03:01 > 0:03:05the benefits of what Gower has to offer but also gives something back.

0:03:05 > 0:03:09Like his family before him, he's a volunteer with the RNLI.

0:03:11 > 0:03:15It cost over £140 million last year to run the institution.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18When you think this is all done on donations,

0:03:18 > 0:03:24it's quite an amazing charity that we are part of.

0:03:24 > 0:03:28And there are over 230 lifeboat stations around the country

0:03:28 > 0:03:31and we're one of the smaller ones.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34So it's up to volunteers like these to drum up their own support

0:03:34 > 0:03:36and plans are already afoot for Horton

0:03:36 > 0:03:40and Port Eynon's next big fundraiser.

0:03:44 > 0:03:46It's late autumn

0:03:46 > 0:03:51and over at Hillend Caravan Park in Llangennith, Gareth Howells

0:03:51 > 0:03:54is busy siting a new van for one of Gower's surfing legends

0:03:54 > 0:03:56and his wife.

0:03:56 > 0:03:58This is PJ's. PJ and Carol.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01She's been looking forward to this for some time.

0:04:01 > 0:04:04So hopefully we can, as I say, in the next fortnight,

0:04:04 > 0:04:07get it on, get all the ancillary work done as well.

0:04:07 > 0:04:11She's been quite specific about what she wants.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14So hopefully we can get it all done for her.

0:04:14 > 0:04:18This caravan will be Pete's escape from the busy shop.

0:04:18 > 0:04:22He was almost killed when he was hit on the head by a stray surfboard.

0:04:22 > 0:04:26His daughter Lucy and the rest of the family

0:04:26 > 0:04:27try to keep an eye on him.

0:04:29 > 0:04:31I worry about him sometimes now

0:04:31 > 0:04:36because you can see he just gets a little bit more tired

0:04:36 > 0:04:39and I suppose...

0:04:39 > 0:04:44just getting older, I suppose, really.

0:04:44 > 0:04:47Pete had seven shards of bone removed from his brain

0:04:47 > 0:04:49after his accident last year.

0:04:49 > 0:04:52Although he's made a remarkable recovery,

0:04:52 > 0:04:55a recent seizure was a shock for the family.

0:04:55 > 0:04:58I think if it was anybody else, I would have been a lot calmer,

0:04:58 > 0:05:03because I'm quite calm in tricky situations but because

0:05:03 > 0:05:08it was dad, I really panicked and I really thought he was dying.

0:05:09 > 0:05:13But now PJ and Carol have a new bolthole

0:05:13 > 0:05:15in which to get away from it all.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19Look at the view. It's fabulous.

0:05:19 > 0:05:23Gareth's finished siting the caravan

0:05:23 > 0:05:26and they're here with their grandson Jake.

0:05:26 > 0:05:28It's a chance for Pete to slow down.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31The memory of his accident is still raw.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34I sort of had a little bit of a flashback,

0:05:34 > 0:05:37I went sort of like, "Oh, it's coming here," you know.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40Probably like being... Fighting Mike Tyson or something.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43Something hit me so hard, so quick, I didn't feel anything

0:05:43 > 0:05:46and didn't feel any pain.

0:05:46 > 0:05:51And then I remember being face down in the water. And I wasn't scared.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54It has taken me to a more spiritual place cos

0:05:54 > 0:05:56we are all going to go one day.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59The accident is something I wouldn't choose to have,

0:05:59 > 0:06:03but now it has sort of taught me other things about myself.

0:06:03 > 0:06:08PJ has, if possible, developed an even deeper appreciation of Gower.

0:06:08 > 0:06:09If this was Hollywood,

0:06:09 > 0:06:12it would have cost millions of pounds to live here.

0:06:12 > 0:06:14With that view. Where are we?

0:06:14 > 0:06:17We're by one of the most beautiful beaches in Britain

0:06:17 > 0:06:21- and the wife can walk about... - The wife's got a name, you know!

0:06:21 > 0:06:23The lovely wife, yeah.

0:06:23 > 0:06:25SHE LAUGHS

0:06:27 > 0:06:31Pete's son James has been training to raise money for the

0:06:31 > 0:06:35air ambulance, as they probably saved his father's life.

0:06:35 > 0:06:38Now he's entered the Ironman competition in Tenby.

0:06:38 > 0:06:40I have raised over £8,000 now.

0:06:40 > 0:06:44My main goal is to finish it, but I'd like to finish it well.

0:06:44 > 0:06:48If I can finish before it gets dark, I will be more than happy.

0:06:48 > 0:06:50If I don't, so be it.

0:06:50 > 0:06:52I'm just going to take it all in and enjoy it and try

0:06:52 > 0:06:56and make sure I do enjoy the whole experience cos I don't think

0:06:56 > 0:06:58I'll be doing another one.

0:06:58 > 0:07:02The RNLI volunteers are also responsible for saving

0:07:02 > 0:07:06lives in Gower and they don't need to be reminded of the dangers.

0:07:06 > 0:07:08Traditionally,

0:07:08 > 0:07:12Gower families throughout the generations man the lifeboats

0:07:12 > 0:07:16and all remember the story of the raging storm of 1916.

0:07:19 > 0:07:23The crew launched in the morning, in awful conditions,

0:07:23 > 0:07:28the winds were reported as being the strongest in living memory.

0:07:28 > 0:07:32And they went down to Pwll Du, to the aid of the SS Dunvegan

0:07:32 > 0:07:38and stood by while the crew were rescued by the local rocket crew.

0:07:38 > 0:07:42And it was when they turned to come back home that the boat

0:07:42 > 0:07:47capsized twice, although the boat righted each time.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50Three of the crew members drowned.

0:07:50 > 0:07:54For the three members of two small villages to drown

0:07:54 > 0:07:58in the way that they did, it must have been an awful thing for them.

0:07:58 > 0:08:01They actually didn't know until the following day

0:08:01 > 0:08:04when the surviving crew members were bought back to Port Eynon

0:08:04 > 0:08:08actually what had happened on New Year's Day.

0:08:10 > 0:08:13The loss of life certainly drew the community closer.

0:08:13 > 0:08:16The statue in Port Eynon churchyard ensures that

0:08:16 > 0:08:20no-one will forget the sacrifice that those men made.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30In North Gower, overlooking Weobley Castle

0:08:30 > 0:08:33and the tranquil Loughor estuary, there's a perfect

0:08:33 > 0:08:37location for a Gower wedding of a very different kind.

0:08:37 > 0:08:42He'll walk to the centre. He'll wait for me. I'll walk after him.

0:08:42 > 0:08:44We'll both walk to the altar.

0:08:44 > 0:08:48- During which time we will actually get bound together.- Right.

0:08:48 > 0:08:52At the end of that, we will be untied, we'll jump the broom,

0:08:52 > 0:08:55we will then give wine and cake to each other.

0:08:55 > 0:08:58And then we give it to everybody else

0:08:58 > 0:09:01because it's welcoming them into our circle.

0:09:01 > 0:09:05Luke and Emma are having a pagan wedding

0:09:05 > 0:09:08and are sorting out the final details with the wedding planner.

0:09:08 > 0:09:11But as with any family event, there are always going to be problems.

0:09:11 > 0:09:15A handful of people are going to be leaving after the ceremony.

0:09:15 > 0:09:19- No, they're not. - My dad has said that one or two people have said that they

0:09:19 > 0:09:23- will watch the wedding but then they have to go.- But we're paying for them to eat food.

0:09:23 > 0:09:27- Yeah, but then other people are going to turn up after. - No, they're not.

0:09:27 > 0:09:30- OK, I'll find out the numbers. Chill.- Honestly!

0:09:30 > 0:09:35- I've had to organise his stag do! - Yes, cos my best man is useless.

0:09:35 > 0:09:39Luke and Emma chose Windmill Farm at Llanrhidian because the

0:09:39 > 0:09:42owners are willing to accommodate their unusual wedding choice.

0:09:42 > 0:09:46How could you want anything more than this? This is exactly what we want.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49But a lot of other venues, they weren't interested.

0:09:49 > 0:09:54They wouldn't let us get married outside. And if they would be OK with getting married outside,

0:09:54 > 0:09:58certain bits of the ceremony they weren't OK with. You think, Jesus Christ, this is a wedding!

0:09:58 > 0:10:01I'm paying you a phenomenal amount of money and you're going to

0:10:01 > 0:10:05turn around and give me excuses and reasons why I can't do what I want!

0:10:05 > 0:10:08Let's go and find someone who will let us do what we want!

0:10:08 > 0:10:13With all the arrangements finalised, Luke and Emma just need their gods to be with them on the day

0:10:13 > 0:10:18to bless them with good weather for their open-air ceremony.

0:10:18 > 0:10:21In the fields above the south coast of Gower,

0:10:21 > 0:10:23between Horton and Port Eynon,

0:10:23 > 0:10:28preparations are under way for the next big RNLI fundraiser.

0:10:28 > 0:10:30Stuart and Will, an accountant and a doctor,

0:10:30 > 0:10:33have taken up hog farming part-time.

0:10:34 > 0:10:39Went to the auction a few days ago and we've bought ourselves two

0:10:39 > 0:10:42new females that are going to become our breeding stock.

0:10:42 > 0:10:45There's one just over there and one here,

0:10:45 > 0:10:48we've named in honour of the Olympic gold athletes.

0:10:48 > 0:10:50We've got Jessica and Jade.

0:10:51 > 0:10:55But it's only the breeding sows the boys have named.

0:10:55 > 0:10:58Unfortunately, one of the other pigs is destined to be the star

0:10:58 > 0:11:02attraction at the fundraiser and there's no chance of a reprieve.

0:11:02 > 0:11:05People are expecting a hog roast.

0:11:05 > 0:11:08It is on the posters now, it's too late.

0:11:08 > 0:11:13But first, the boys have to choose which pig is for the chop.

0:11:13 > 0:11:17I think this one is probably the favourite. Aren't you?

0:11:17 > 0:11:20It's easy to tell because he's got a black spot on him.

0:11:20 > 0:11:24Last year we made nearly £400 for the RNLI, which is a pretty good result from a single pig.

0:11:24 > 0:11:27These pigs, I think, are slightly bigger than the one

0:11:27 > 0:11:30we roasted last year, so hopefully we will do even better again.

0:11:30 > 0:11:34I'm kind of happy that they had a nice time here, so it makes it slightly easier, I guess.

0:11:34 > 0:11:37But a whole hog takes a long time to roast,

0:11:37 > 0:11:40which means an all-nighter for the boys.

0:11:40 > 0:11:43We're going to start cooking probably around two o'clock

0:11:43 > 0:11:46in the morning, maybe three, which is a bit of a stretch

0:11:46 > 0:11:49and we will do it in shifts overnight, trying to make

0:11:49 > 0:11:53sure it is ready for our customers at about midday the following day.

0:11:59 > 0:12:03Gordon Howe, Gower Society planning monitor,

0:12:03 > 0:12:07spends as much time in the surf with his family as he does getting

0:12:07 > 0:12:09involved in controversial planning issues.

0:12:09 > 0:12:11His granddaughter Milly has entered the

0:12:11 > 0:12:15Welsh National Surf Championships, hoping to win a place in the

0:12:15 > 0:12:19Welsh team, but on the first day, she doesn't even get in the water.

0:12:19 > 0:12:22You get all worked up and you're like getting ready for it all day,

0:12:22 > 0:12:24and then I didn't even go in.

0:12:24 > 0:12:28I worked myself up yesterday for nothing.

0:12:28 > 0:12:31So now I just know there's no point thinking about it.

0:12:31 > 0:12:35But now the wait is over, there are other problems for Milly.

0:12:35 > 0:12:39The surf is relentless, pounding and hard to paddle out through.

0:12:39 > 0:12:42Her dad's advice to select only a couple of waves

0:12:42 > 0:12:44hasn't gone down well.

0:12:44 > 0:12:46I did what I wanted to do,

0:12:46 > 0:12:49I didn't do what everybody else wanted me to do.

0:12:49 > 0:12:53- Do it.- I just don't want to like, "Right, this surf,

0:12:53 > 0:12:55"I'm going to go in here for 20 minutes,

0:12:55 > 0:12:59"and I'm going to catch two good waves, and not going to paddle..."

0:12:59 > 0:13:04- You can't go in there and not paddle! - It was my fault.

0:13:04 > 0:13:09- Everything that happened.- I'm not having a tantrum over what happened.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12I'm having a tantrum over how you always think,

0:13:12 > 0:13:15"It would have been easier if you just caught two little waves."

0:13:15 > 0:13:19- You go in there and try and stand up on a wave!- I couldn't. I couldn't.

0:13:19 > 0:13:21Do as I say, not as I do.

0:13:21 > 0:13:26- Definitely.- Right, well. There we go then. Point proven.- Come on.

0:13:26 > 0:13:29You don't mean it really.

0:13:29 > 0:13:31Despite Milly's frustration,

0:13:31 > 0:13:35the judges have given her first place and in a few hours' time,

0:13:35 > 0:13:38she will be in the final, fighting for a spot on the Welsh team.

0:13:42 > 0:13:46Back in North Gower at Windmill Farm,

0:13:46 > 0:13:49Emma and Luke are gearing up for their pagan wedding.

0:13:49 > 0:13:54Emma is trying to regain some calm before the storm.

0:13:54 > 0:13:57I think when you get to this point, things that go wrong,

0:13:57 > 0:13:59you can't do anything about it.

0:13:59 > 0:14:02If you let it bother you, it's just going to ruin the day.

0:14:02 > 0:14:06It's a case of, you have got to have a kind of "whatever"

0:14:06 > 0:14:09kind of attitude towards it.

0:14:09 > 0:14:14The high priestess, Buffy, is a friend of the couple.

0:14:14 > 0:14:16It's all about spreading love.

0:14:16 > 0:14:20It's all about the vows that they exchange with each other.

0:14:20 > 0:14:24It's all about their freedom of expression.

0:14:24 > 0:14:27It's all about the fact that they want to encompass

0:14:27 > 0:14:31everybody in their circle of love and it really is

0:14:31 > 0:14:35all about the love that they have for each other and want to share.

0:14:35 > 0:14:38Poor Luke, he's had to go away and write his vows.

0:14:38 > 0:14:42We haven't had any time at all. He's gone somewhere.

0:14:42 > 0:14:45I don't know where he's gone.

0:14:45 > 0:14:49If he doesn't come back, we'll be in trouble. He will be in trouble.

0:14:49 > 0:14:53And there'll also be trouble if the open-air circle and altar

0:14:53 > 0:14:54aren't finished in time,

0:14:54 > 0:14:57as they are a crucial part of a pagan ceremony.

0:14:57 > 0:15:01Luke's dad and friends have all taken part in the building.

0:15:01 > 0:15:05I think when you're first told that it's going to be a pagan wedding,

0:15:05 > 0:15:06you have all sorts of ideas.

0:15:06 > 0:15:10I didn't know what it was in the beginning, to be honest.

0:15:10 > 0:15:14But it's been good. I've really enjoyed helping him to do it.

0:15:14 > 0:15:17I think it has brought us closer together.

0:15:17 > 0:15:20I've just been down to will be Weobley Castle now to write out all

0:15:20 > 0:15:23the reasons why I love the woman I'm marrying today.

0:15:23 > 0:15:27Which sounds like a very easy thing to do because there's lots

0:15:27 > 0:15:33of reasons, but to articulate them into a way which sounds coherent and

0:15:33 > 0:15:37not me standing there going, "I love you, babe, because...you know...

0:15:37 > 0:15:40"Yeah, and that stuff."

0:15:40 > 0:15:42So it's been quite difficult

0:15:42 > 0:15:45and quite touching to actually write them down.

0:15:45 > 0:15:48I've been thinking of them for months but to finally get them

0:15:48 > 0:15:51on paper, it feels like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders.

0:15:51 > 0:15:55And as the morning wears on, all semblance of calm

0:15:55 > 0:15:57and tranquillity slowly fades away.

0:15:57 > 0:16:00I've lost my two ushers now and I need to explain to them

0:16:00 > 0:16:03- what they need to do. - Chris is there.- Chris.

0:16:03 > 0:16:07Simon! The goblets need to have wine in them!

0:16:07 > 0:16:10Simon! Si!

0:16:10 > 0:16:12We've given up on the plan,

0:16:12 > 0:16:15so everything is going and that's all that really matters.

0:16:15 > 0:16:19Behind the scenes, the venue's owners, Viv and Lynne,

0:16:19 > 0:16:21have their own problems to deal with.

0:16:21 > 0:16:22Can I just have a word?

0:16:22 > 0:16:25I've been to see your bride, she is a little bit stressed.

0:16:25 > 0:16:28- We've had a call from a children's entertainer?- Right.

0:16:28 > 0:16:32- Are we expecting a children's entertainer?- I'm not sure.

0:16:32 > 0:16:35I might be a bit nervous now.

0:16:35 > 0:16:38Especially as I've heard the other half's vows are wonderful

0:16:38 > 0:16:42- and I hope mine are up to scratch. - They are. I promise they are.

0:16:42 > 0:16:46We're going to have to find a glass to put it in, otherwise it's going to go out.

0:16:46 > 0:16:49- But that represents fire. - OK. Not a problem.

0:16:49 > 0:16:52- You'll sort that out. - Sort what out? What am I doing?

0:16:52 > 0:16:55- I don't know, but can I go to the loo now?- Yes.

0:16:55 > 0:16:58As the high priestess is given permission to leave the altar,

0:16:58 > 0:17:01there is just time to sort out the last-minute glitches,

0:17:01 > 0:17:03as the guests arrive.

0:17:03 > 0:17:06For the majority, it will be their first pagan wedding.

0:17:09 > 0:17:13It's also a new experience for James, who's attempting

0:17:13 > 0:17:16the world-famous Ironman competition in Tenby.

0:17:16 > 0:17:19Over 1,700 international athletes have come to compete.

0:17:22 > 0:17:27The first leg of the race is a 2.4 mile free for all in open water.

0:17:27 > 0:17:31The swim is James's strongest point after years of surfing

0:17:31 > 0:17:33and paddling in Gower's seas.

0:17:38 > 0:17:42James completes the swim in a magnificent 54 minutes

0:17:42 > 0:17:46and is among the front-runners as he arrives at the transition tent.

0:17:46 > 0:17:48Every second counts.

0:17:50 > 0:17:53A bit tired. But that's to be expected.

0:17:54 > 0:17:57But he's been in too much of a hurry.

0:17:57 > 0:17:59Hang on, I got the wrong bag.

0:18:00 > 0:18:04With so many coming through the transition area, it is easily done.

0:18:04 > 0:18:07But James is losing valuable time.

0:18:07 > 0:18:10And there is a daunting bike ride coming up.

0:18:10 > 0:18:12This is the tricky bit now.

0:18:14 > 0:18:17It's starting to rain, making the roads more difficult to

0:18:17 > 0:18:21negotiate and it is a gruelling hilly course.

0:18:21 > 0:18:26But after 112 miles and just over four hours later,

0:18:26 > 0:18:28James comes in unscathed.

0:18:29 > 0:18:32The last few hills were horrendous though.

0:18:34 > 0:18:37Now it's a quick change of kit before James heads out

0:18:37 > 0:18:41into the hills around Tenby for a 26 mile marathon.

0:18:41 > 0:18:43He'll have two draw on a year's training

0:18:43 > 0:18:47and the thoughts of why he is fundraising for the air ambulance

0:18:47 > 0:18:50that saved his dad's life to get him to the finish line.

0:18:53 > 0:18:56It's the day of the RNLI hog roast.

0:18:57 > 0:19:01Everything runs on donations, so at this annual open day,

0:19:01 > 0:19:03every penny they bring in counts.

0:19:04 > 0:19:09And Will and Stuart's pig is sacrificed to a good cause.

0:19:09 > 0:19:12Well, we got down here at two o'clock this morning and lit the fire,

0:19:12 > 0:19:17got the pig on the spit and starting cooking at about three.

0:19:17 > 0:19:22- We've been sitting here ever since. - The secret of it is that everyone over there thinks

0:19:22 > 0:19:26it's really hard work and we're getting more credit for coming down in the middle of the night to put

0:19:26 > 0:19:30the pig on and we've been left alone from all of the heavy lifting.

0:19:30 > 0:19:33But the reality is we just sat there drinking beer for most of the night.

0:19:33 > 0:19:37- Don't say that, we won't get away with it next year.- That's true.

0:19:37 > 0:19:43Roll up, roll up. RNLI open day now officially open. Roll up, roll up.

0:19:44 > 0:19:48Will and Stuart now have to make sure that the roast is done,

0:19:48 > 0:19:52carved and ready to serve as soon as possible.

0:19:52 > 0:19:56But what good's a slice of pork and crackling without the stuffing?

0:19:56 > 0:19:59They've assigned the station's vegetarian, Lizzie, to make it.

0:19:59 > 0:20:03- Do you want it all, by the way? - It was the smallest packet they had unfortunately.

0:20:03 > 0:20:07- So make all that and we'll have enough stuffing for the whole pig. - I can do that.

0:20:09 > 0:20:12As the morning unfolds and local start arriving,

0:20:12 > 0:20:17everyone is getting hungry and the hog roast is eagerly anticipated.

0:20:17 > 0:20:21Right then, the pig is pretty much cooked now. It is 11:30.

0:20:21 > 0:20:23We're aiming to start serving at around 12.

0:20:23 > 0:20:26The only drawback at the moment is Lizzie,

0:20:26 > 0:20:31who we sent for stuffing some hours ago, hasn't appeared with it yet. I don't know what's happened.

0:20:31 > 0:20:35We might have to send someone out on a reconnaissance mission soon.

0:20:35 > 0:20:37Will has drawn the short straw

0:20:37 > 0:20:40and the pressure is on to bring back the stuffing ASAP.

0:20:40 > 0:20:43It said on the packet, cook for half an hour.

0:20:43 > 0:20:47We've been two hours now and there's no sign of it yet.

0:20:47 > 0:20:50There is a ray of light at the end of the lane.

0:20:50 > 0:20:54- We've found the stuffing. - Well, I rang to come and get them.

0:20:54 > 0:20:57- Is it hot?- Yeah. It's just come out of the oven.

0:20:57 > 0:21:00I dunno if it's edible.

0:21:00 > 0:21:02It looks like stuffing, smells like stuffing.

0:21:04 > 0:21:05But there's a problem.

0:21:05 > 0:21:08Despite Lizzie's lengthy spell in the kitchen,

0:21:08 > 0:21:10head chef Stuart is not satisfied.

0:21:10 > 0:21:12I haven't made enough.

0:21:12 > 0:21:17Delegate it to the girls and we still can't do it. Bad instructions. But...

0:21:17 > 0:21:21She'll have to turn this around faster than the first batch,

0:21:21 > 0:21:24as hog roast sales are key to the success of the event.

0:21:27 > 0:21:30At the Welsh National Surf Competition at Freshwater East

0:21:30 > 0:21:35in Pembrokeshire, Milly has reached the final of the women's under 18 section.

0:21:35 > 0:21:40If she wins this, she'll be in line for a place in the national team.

0:21:40 > 0:21:44But the conditions are tough and Milly is tired after a long day.

0:21:44 > 0:21:48She's got two OK waves and I'm not quite sure,

0:21:48 > 0:21:51all of the girls seem to have one good wave.

0:21:51 > 0:21:55But then a couple of them had a good take-off. Big take-off.

0:21:55 > 0:21:58They didn't do anything with it. I don't know.

0:21:58 > 0:22:01It's been two hard days of competition

0:22:01 > 0:22:04and as the sun sets over the bay, the final results are in.

0:22:06 > 0:22:09In first place, please excuse my pronunciation of the surname,

0:22:09 > 0:22:12Milly Zoestig?

0:22:12 > 0:22:14CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:22:18 > 0:22:23Success for Milly will mean a Welsh team place and unusually,

0:22:23 > 0:22:27she's quite overcome with emotion. Her dad, Jem, is very proud of her.

0:22:27 > 0:22:32But she hasn't quite forgotten their differences earlier in the day.

0:22:32 > 0:22:36You just shouldn't try and tell me what to do because... I don't know.

0:22:36 > 0:22:39He's just a bit annoying sometimes, isn't he?

0:22:39 > 0:22:43Doing a little dance. Unlock the doors. Dad, I'm in the front.

0:22:43 > 0:22:45Oh, my God!

0:22:45 > 0:22:49But it's soon all smiles, as they pack the van

0:22:49 > 0:22:51and head off back to Gower.

0:22:51 > 0:22:56She's the best daughter in the world, look. She's got a cup saying "Best Daughter In The World".

0:22:56 > 0:22:58You would get one saying "Best Dad".

0:22:58 > 0:23:01But unfortunately you didn't enter the competition.

0:23:07 > 0:23:10That was close. Nearly went in.

0:23:10 > 0:23:13Punters are gathering and the money

0:23:13 > 0:23:15is rolling in at the RNLI fundraiser.

0:23:15 > 0:23:19And community teamwork has resolved the stuffing shortage.

0:23:19 > 0:23:24The stuffing is in the oven, serving dishes stolen from the village hall.

0:23:24 > 0:23:27We're nearly there, hopefully.

0:23:27 > 0:23:32- Just falling off the bone, like butter.- Beautifully cooked, as we knew it would be.

0:23:32 > 0:23:34Ladies and gentlemen,

0:23:34 > 0:23:38the Horton and Port Eynon RNLI Hog Roast is now open.

0:23:38 > 0:23:41As the hordes descend, Will and Stuart's offering looks set

0:23:41 > 0:23:43to become the main money-spinner once again.

0:23:43 > 0:23:48Absolutely fantastic. I came down this morning to walk my dog at seven o'clock and there

0:23:48 > 0:23:51was a lot of cider bottles, empty cider bottles, by the hog roast.

0:23:51 > 0:23:55But the hog looked fantastic and it looks even better now.

0:23:55 > 0:23:57- Lush!- It's good.

0:23:57 > 0:24:00The customers must be happy, judging by what is left on the spit.

0:24:00 > 0:24:03We did sell out, I didn't think we would at one point.

0:24:03 > 0:24:06It was very quiet. We've sold at least 150 rolls.

0:24:06 > 0:24:10We should have raised in the region of £500, which is more than last year.

0:24:10 > 0:24:14We will have to tot it up and check, of course. I'm very happy with that.

0:24:14 > 0:24:17As the day draws to a close and the takings are counted,

0:24:17 > 0:24:20it seems that everyone is pretty satisfied.

0:24:20 > 0:24:24A lot better than we could have hoped for because the forecast was for rain early morning.

0:24:24 > 0:24:27It has cleared up. It is fantastic now.

0:24:27 > 0:24:30We've had a steady stream of people coming through.

0:24:30 > 0:24:33It has been as busy as we could have hoped for really.

0:24:33 > 0:24:38And the event eventually raised well over £1,000 to help the RNLI

0:24:38 > 0:24:41to keep watch over Gower's shores night and day.

0:24:45 > 0:24:50Back at Windmill Farm, the pagans are going head-to-head with the elements.

0:24:50 > 0:24:53Bride and groom are delivering their home-made vows

0:24:53 > 0:24:56and have to fight against the wind to make themselves heard.

0:24:56 > 0:25:01Today I am joined with you, my best friend, my lover, and my soul mate.

0:25:01 > 0:25:05I give myself to you completely, with a promise to love,

0:25:05 > 0:25:09cherish and support you for the rest of our lives and beyond.

0:25:09 > 0:25:12Emma, from the first time I saw you, I knew that I loved you.

0:25:12 > 0:25:15You're the woman that I want to spend my life with.

0:25:15 > 0:25:19You're the reason for getting out of bed in the morning and going to bed at night.

0:25:19 > 0:25:23So Luke gets through his vows and despite the high winds,

0:25:23 > 0:25:25the tension drops.

0:25:25 > 0:25:27It's celebration time.

0:25:27 > 0:25:31OK, ladies and gentlemen, Mr and Mrs Newton will now jump the broom

0:25:31 > 0:25:36to signify the start of their new life together.

0:25:37 > 0:25:39CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:25:39 > 0:25:44Although the wind almost took the bride's veil into the estuary,

0:25:44 > 0:25:47and blew all the candles out, Emma and Luke are happy.

0:25:47 > 0:25:49As with everything else it didn't go to plan,

0:25:49 > 0:25:52but it was still lovely and we're married and we're happy.

0:25:52 > 0:25:56That's all that matters. The wind has had the veil.

0:25:56 > 0:25:59We certainly did play with the elements, we did.

0:25:59 > 0:26:03It was challenging. It was very challenging.

0:26:03 > 0:26:06I'm now going to get very, very, very drunk.

0:26:06 > 0:26:10- I thought it was really good. - Different.- Yeah, I wasn't expecting any of this. It's really nice.

0:26:10 > 0:26:13It's nice to be outside as well.

0:26:13 > 0:26:15- It was beautiful.- Amazing. - Really beautiful.

0:26:15 > 0:26:17It was so much more tender

0:26:17 > 0:26:22and meaningful than your normal scripted Christian wedding.

0:26:22 > 0:26:27It was... Honestly, I can't describe it. I was just in tears.

0:26:27 > 0:26:32- It's been flipping crazy!- Yes. - But, do you know what, we're married.

0:26:32 > 0:26:35Yes, and I wouldn't change a second of it for the world.

0:26:35 > 0:26:40It's been fun. It's been interesting.

0:26:40 > 0:26:43- It's just typical of us really, isn't it?- Yes.

0:26:43 > 0:26:47Luke and Emma's pagan ritual appears to have pleasantly surprised

0:26:47 > 0:26:51the guests, but the evening's entertainment looks set to play out

0:26:51 > 0:26:53in a more traditional style.

0:26:58 > 0:27:03In Tenby, at the finish of the 2012 Ironman Wales, four hours

0:27:03 > 0:27:07and three minutes after James Jones set off for his 26 mile

0:27:17 > 0:27:20Under 12 hours! Amazing!

0:27:20 > 0:27:23It's a good hour and a half quicker than I was expecting.

0:27:23 > 0:27:27James's Gower fan club and family are elated

0:27:27 > 0:27:29and overcome by his achievements.

0:27:33 > 0:27:37Amazing, brilliant! Really chuffed for him!

0:27:37 > 0:27:40He has done so amazingly well. My mum is chuffed.

0:27:40 > 0:27:43And he still looks like he could do another one!

0:27:43 > 0:27:47James's best friend Huw has been with him all the way.

0:27:47 > 0:27:51Four o'clock this morning, we were sitting there contemplating, 14 hours is a good result.

0:27:51 > 0:27:55I said, "James, finishing is a good result." 11,54. Magnificent.

0:27:55 > 0:27:58Done Gower proud. Fantastic.

0:28:18 > 0:28:20Yes!

0:28:20 > 0:28:25Sadnesses, moments of joy, disputes.

0:28:25 > 0:28:27And you're knocking it.

0:28:27 > 0:28:31How to maintain Gower is subject to fierce debate.

0:28:31 > 0:28:3540 years ago, Gower was designated the UK's first
