0:00:02 > 0:00:04It's the most famous shopping street in the world

0:00:04 > 0:00:07in the heart of Britain's capital city,

0:00:07 > 0:00:111.5 miles long with 30 million visitors each year,

0:00:11 > 0:00:16with some of the world's most famous shops, biggest stars...

0:00:16 > 0:00:21- Kate Moss!- ..and busiest stations. - Sorry, guys. Stand back for me.

0:00:21 > 0:00:25What does it take to keep it running 24 hours a day...

0:00:25 > 0:00:27Busiest street in the world so it needs constant attention.

0:00:27 > 0:00:30- ..seven days a week?- Oi! Clear off!

0:00:30 > 0:00:33You're going to be arrested on suspicion of attempted theft.

0:00:33 > 0:00:38- Are you ready, London? - A street that never sleeps...

0:00:38 > 0:00:42This sort of thing wouldn't happen anywhere else.

0:00:42 > 0:00:43..Oxford Street.

0:00:46 > 0:00:50Coming up... Skimming devices on cash machines.

0:00:50 > 0:00:54The Oxford Street police hunt down the gangs responsible.

0:00:56 > 0:01:00Simon Cowell's coming to Oxford Street. Can the paps get a snap?

0:01:00 > 0:01:04Just look at the state of that! That is incredible, that is.

0:01:04 > 0:01:06And bread of heaven.

0:01:06 > 0:01:10It's St David's Day at John Lewis and the store's in full voice.

0:01:10 > 0:01:14THEY SING

0:01:21 > 0:01:25Oxford Street has its own team of specialist police tasked with

0:01:25 > 0:01:30keeping it safe for all those that use it. They're known as ORB.

0:01:30 > 0:01:34It's 9am and one of the ORB team, PC Barry Nicholls, has been

0:01:34 > 0:01:37- called to a West End bank. - 'South-west 1, over.'

0:01:37 > 0:01:41- Can you just tell us what number it is, please?- '35.'

0:01:41 > 0:01:44He's off to deal with the latest example of a crime

0:01:44 > 0:01:48that's afflicting Oxford Street and city centres up and down the UK -

0:01:48 > 0:01:51ATM, or cash machine, fraud.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54We've got a suspect device that's been put on one of the cash points.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57Inside the bank, all becomes clear.

0:01:57 > 0:02:01A member of staff has removed the devices to show them to the police.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03Ah!

0:02:04 > 0:02:08Card clips. They're not actual readers. Do you know how they work?

0:02:08 > 0:02:13- No.- Basically, the device is stuck inside the machine, like that.

0:02:13 > 0:02:15So you put your card into the machine.

0:02:15 > 0:02:17So it goes underneath, works as normal,

0:02:17 > 0:02:20and when the card goes to go out, gets stuck, then the machine

0:02:20 > 0:02:24says "out of order" and the person thinks they've had their card eaten.

0:02:24 > 0:02:27The person will stand near them and try and get the PIN number.

0:02:27 > 0:02:31The person will walk away and all they'll do is unclip that,

0:02:31 > 0:02:34the card will pop out, so they've got a PIN number and a card.

0:02:34 > 0:02:38PC Nicholls and Rickett ask to inspect the bank's CCTV

0:02:38 > 0:02:40to try and spot the criminal.

0:02:41 > 0:02:44Then, after a few minutes of studying the footage...

0:02:44 > 0:02:47- Yeah, yeah, yeah.- Yup. - It's him, isn't it?

0:02:47 > 0:02:50Yeah, he's just lining it up, isn't he, to get it right?

0:02:50 > 0:02:51Moments later,

0:02:51 > 0:02:55an unwitting member of the public becomes the first victim.

0:02:55 > 0:02:57She just keeps putting her hand up,

0:02:57 > 0:03:00and that's where the little clip will have just held it in.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03The skimmer waits around, looking for the moment to retrieve the device

0:03:03 > 0:03:05and the card it's trapped.

0:03:05 > 0:03:07There he is.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10PCs Nicholls and Rickett, on the other hand,

0:03:10 > 0:03:12are hoping for a clear shot of his face.

0:03:12 > 0:03:18Especially there. That was awesome. What time is it? 10.08 and 51.

0:03:18 > 0:03:19It's a good facial shot.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22ATM skimming is on the rise in the UK.

0:03:22 > 0:03:29Fraud from skimmed cards has risen 15%, according to latest figures.

0:03:29 > 0:03:33But few places have the resources Oxford Street does to combat it.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35Barry and colleague take the device

0:03:35 > 0:03:38and CCTV evidence back to the station.

0:03:38 > 0:03:40It will now go to a specialist team

0:03:40 > 0:03:43to see if they can identify the suspect.

0:03:43 > 0:03:45What it means for the ORB team is

0:03:45 > 0:03:48there are cash machine gangs on the loose in the West End

0:03:48 > 0:03:52and they need to do everything they can to disrupt them.

0:03:52 > 0:03:57Doing his bit is PC Darren Bond, part of the team's plain-clothes squad.

0:03:57 > 0:04:01Today, he's on patrol with colleague Hadees Iper.

0:04:01 > 0:04:05One of the ATMs around Oxford Street will be having a device,

0:04:05 > 0:04:07a skimming device, on it on a daily basis.

0:04:07 > 0:04:09It's an ongoing war.

0:04:09 > 0:04:11They're on the lookout for the telltale signs

0:04:11 > 0:04:13of the card skimmers

0:04:13 > 0:04:16and as they patrol, the team spots something.

0:04:17 > 0:04:21Just been keeping an eye on a guy who's been walking down the road,

0:04:21 > 0:04:24probably walked along behind him for about 200 metres.

0:04:26 > 0:04:31And now he's crossed over, but he's going back the way he's come.

0:04:31 > 0:04:33Yeah, not quite sure what to make of him.

0:04:33 > 0:04:36The man has stopped at several cash machines.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39Darren thinks he might be planting card skimmers on them.

0:04:43 > 0:04:44A definite job.

0:04:44 > 0:04:47Just seen two males standing very close

0:04:47 > 0:04:50and observing the ATMs just down here.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53Darren glances at the machines the men were at.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55It's not clear if they have a skimming device on them

0:04:55 > 0:04:57and he doesn't want to get too close.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00Got to be very aware of the third eye

0:05:00 > 0:05:03they may have left, watching the machines,

0:05:03 > 0:05:05if there is a device on them.

0:05:05 > 0:05:08Darren and Hadees call in more officers to covertly follow the two

0:05:08 > 0:05:12and the officers report the men are heading towards a bank.

0:05:17 > 0:05:19When they're at the cashpoint, bang!

0:05:20 > 0:05:24Later, Darren finds a lot more than he bargained for.

0:05:24 > 0:05:26That has a pinhole camera here.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40In the dog-eat-dog world of the paparazzi photographer,

0:05:40 > 0:05:44there's no patch more crucial than Oxford Street,

0:05:44 > 0:05:48where a steady stream of stars come to work, shop and play.

0:05:50 > 0:05:54No-one knows this better than leading celebrity snapper Andy Barnes.

0:05:54 > 0:05:56Got to be there at the right time.

0:05:56 > 0:05:58You've got to have the right equipment.

0:05:58 > 0:05:59I mean, I'm all kitted out.

0:05:59 > 0:06:03And it's all about preparation and also, perhaps, sometimes,

0:06:03 > 0:06:07just that little bit of luck can help you just get the right moment.

0:06:08 > 0:06:11And today, Andy's got a hot tip he's hoping will land him

0:06:11 > 0:06:14some lucrative picture sales.

0:06:14 > 0:06:17The auditions for ITV's Britain's Got Talent show

0:06:17 > 0:06:21are taking place at the Dominion Theatre at the east end of the street

0:06:21 > 0:06:24and the celebrity judges are due to arrive.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27We're expecting some really good names to turn up -

0:06:27 > 0:06:29the likes of Simon Cowell.

0:06:29 > 0:06:31They always sell really well in magazines.

0:06:31 > 0:06:34They're always absolutely brilliant, price-wise.

0:06:34 > 0:06:39Yesterday, the show's judges staged a red carpet entrance

0:06:39 > 0:06:42at the front door of the theatre especially for the press.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45But Andy's learnt there's a second day of auditions,

0:06:45 > 0:06:48and all four judges - Simon Cowell, David Walliams,

0:06:48 > 0:06:51Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon -

0:06:51 > 0:06:54are expected to make a low-key entrance to the theatre.

0:06:54 > 0:06:58- What's going on?- Britain's Got Talent.- Oh, is it here?- Yeah.

0:06:58 > 0:07:02Oh, right. Didn't realise. Do you like Simon Cowell?

0:07:02 > 0:07:05- See if he gets out of that car. - No. Not really!

0:07:05 > 0:07:06SHE LAUGHS

0:07:06 > 0:07:09- Oh, well. I hope you see him. - Yeah, so do I.

0:07:09 > 0:07:10The problem for Andy is

0:07:10 > 0:07:14he doesn't know where the stars will be arriving.

0:07:14 > 0:07:19There are at least three separate entrances a good distance apart.

0:07:19 > 0:07:21At the stage door at the back,

0:07:21 > 0:07:23Andy thinks he might have the field to himself.

0:07:24 > 0:07:28Have any of the judges actually arrived yet? Nothing at all?

0:07:28 > 0:07:30Brilliant. That's lovely, that.

0:07:30 > 0:07:33But it's not long before other snappers are on the case.

0:07:35 > 0:07:39Andy goes on the hunt for insider information.

0:07:39 > 0:07:41Do you know if they'll be coming this way?

0:07:41 > 0:07:43- We've been told front doors. - Oh, really?

0:07:43 > 0:07:47- They're going straight in at the front door?- Yeah.- Lovely. OK.

0:07:47 > 0:07:49Andy heads back to the front.

0:07:49 > 0:07:52Getting this right could mean the difference between

0:07:52 > 0:07:55thousands of pounds of picture sales or nothing at all.

0:07:57 > 0:08:00He was just saying that, if it's quiet,

0:08:00 > 0:08:04he might drop them off here and then they walk through the front door.

0:08:04 > 0:08:07But then, the driver might think that it's a little bit too busy

0:08:07 > 0:08:10so he might just take them round the corner and put them

0:08:10 > 0:08:11through the stage door.

0:08:11 > 0:08:15If I hear that they've gone round the back, we leg it.

0:08:15 > 0:08:19We leg it as fast as we can possibly go, and I've got a bad leg.

0:08:19 > 0:08:25But with the arrival imminent, Andy suddenly gets fresh info.

0:08:25 > 0:08:27They're coming in the back exit through there.

0:08:27 > 0:08:28- Over there on the right.- Lovely.

0:08:28 > 0:08:31- Definitely that way, is it?- 100%. - Lovely. Thank you.

0:08:31 > 0:08:33We'd better run.

0:08:33 > 0:08:34Think we'd better go and see

0:08:34 > 0:08:36if we can get something round the back here now.

0:08:36 > 0:08:38Andy gets moving, bad leg and all...

0:08:38 > 0:08:39Good for a bit of exercise.

0:08:43 > 0:08:47..and just in time, as David Walliams's Range Rover swoops in.

0:08:51 > 0:08:54- Hi, David.- Hi, David.- Hi, David.

0:08:54 > 0:08:56- Thank you.- David?

0:09:00 > 0:09:03That was a bit rubbish, wasn't it? Didn't get anything at all there.

0:09:05 > 0:09:07I got him in the car, so it's not too bad.

0:09:07 > 0:09:10I got a couple of frames out of it, so it's not too bad,

0:09:10 > 0:09:13but, if I'm honest with you, he can be a bit...

0:09:13 > 0:09:15He doesn't like just posing up outside.

0:09:16 > 0:09:20Andy's hoping for better luck with the ladies.

0:09:20 > 0:09:23I reckon Alesha or Amanda will probably do something for us now.

0:09:23 > 0:09:25And he hasn't got long to wait.

0:09:25 > 0:09:27Hold on a minute.

0:09:27 > 0:09:29Here's Amanda.

0:09:31 > 0:09:34Let's hope we get a better shot than Mr Walliams.

0:09:37 > 0:09:40Guys, is there any chance we can get a photo?

0:09:40 > 0:09:44But today, Amanda's not keen on being seen.

0:09:46 > 0:09:51Oh, clever stuff! Oh, look at that!

0:09:51 > 0:09:53All he gets is a view of her footwear.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57Just look at the state of that! That is incredible, that is.

0:09:57 > 0:10:01The lengths they've gone to to hide what she's wearing!

0:10:01 > 0:10:02Just unbelievable.

0:10:02 > 0:10:04This is new territory for Andy -

0:10:04 > 0:10:09a celebrity that, today at least, doesn't want publicity.

0:10:11 > 0:10:16Later, we'll see if he gets any more luck bagging himself a Cowell.

0:10:16 > 0:10:19There's quite a few snappers there but we've all got very, very little.

0:10:28 > 0:10:31Standing out from the crowd amongst Oxford Street's 200 shops

0:10:31 > 0:10:35are its four huge department stores.

0:10:35 > 0:10:38These giants of the retail world have battled for customers

0:10:38 > 0:10:42on the street for decades and each seeks to outdo the others

0:10:42 > 0:10:45with events and offerings to entice shoppers in.

0:10:46 > 0:10:48And today, John Lewis has got an event

0:10:48 > 0:10:50it's hoping will do exactly that.

0:10:50 > 0:10:56It's St David's Day, the national day of Wales, and to celebrate it,

0:10:56 > 0:11:00the shop's food hall has lined up a special series of events.

0:11:00 > 0:11:04Half a dozen boutique Welsh food producers have sent samplers

0:11:04 > 0:11:06to promote their products in store.

0:11:06 > 0:11:08Hi, would you like to try?

0:11:08 > 0:11:13Food sampler Lucinda is here on behalf of pate-maker Patchwork.

0:11:13 > 0:11:15Hello, how are you?

0:11:15 > 0:11:18This is tequila and cranberry with a chicken liver base. OK?

0:11:19 > 0:11:22South Wales baker James's family have been making

0:11:22 > 0:11:26classic Welsh cakes and pastries for three generations.

0:11:27 > 0:11:31Today, he's hoping shoppers like his bara brith - a type of cake.

0:11:31 > 0:11:34We soak the sultanas in tea overnight.

0:11:34 > 0:11:37You've got mixed spices in there, the whole combination going on.

0:11:37 > 0:11:39Well, I hope you enjoy my products on St David's Day.

0:11:39 > 0:11:41Thank you very much.

0:11:41 > 0:11:44At the end of the day, all the samplers will get a sales report

0:11:44 > 0:11:46to see if they've hit their targets.

0:11:49 > 0:11:51To add a bit of theatre to the event,

0:11:51 > 0:11:54the store's pulling out all the stops.

0:11:54 > 0:11:58There's a harpist on hand to accompany the food tasting

0:11:58 > 0:12:01and they've got another special Welsh treat in store.

0:12:01 > 0:12:04They've booked a choir to perform some of the principality's

0:12:04 > 0:12:07most famous songs as part of a surprise flash mob.

0:12:07 > 0:12:13But this morning, choir leader Alice has already run into difficulties.

0:12:13 > 0:12:17The alto in our group fell over in the Tube

0:12:17 > 0:12:20and fell down some stairs and hit her head

0:12:20 > 0:12:22and had to go to casualty,

0:12:22 > 0:12:25so frantically trying to call everyone we knew in London

0:12:25 > 0:12:27who was a singer and could speak Welsh

0:12:27 > 0:12:29and who knew the songs we were going to sing.

0:12:29 > 0:12:34And one of those calls has found them a saviour in the shape of Becca.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37So I've just arrived here and, hopefully, I'll know the songs

0:12:37 > 0:12:40and maybe I'll be able to make up some harmony.

0:12:40 > 0:12:41So hopefully, it will be OK.

0:12:43 > 0:12:47# Mae bys Meri Ann wedi brifo

0:12:47 > 0:12:49# A Dafydd y gwas... #

0:12:49 > 0:12:51First rehearsals do not bode well.

0:12:53 > 0:12:55# Dai bach... #

0:12:55 > 0:12:57Sorry.

0:12:57 > 0:12:59I'll do that again. I apologise.

0:13:01 > 0:13:03The choir plan to surprise shoppers,

0:13:03 > 0:13:06coming out of nowhere as store staff and customers

0:13:06 > 0:13:09to sing traditional Welsh songs.

0:13:09 > 0:13:11So I'm just putting on this staff apron,

0:13:11 > 0:13:15so that I blend in with the rest of the Waitrose staff.

0:13:15 > 0:13:18A flash mob is quite a bizarre thing to do anyway, and to know that

0:13:18 > 0:13:21you're doing it in about half an hour is even more bizarre.

0:13:21 > 0:13:26I reckon people will stop and just stare.

0:13:27 > 0:13:30Later, it's iechyd da at the food hall,

0:13:30 > 0:13:34as the harp plays, the public tuck in and the choir get ready to sing.

0:13:43 > 0:13:46The undercover Oxford Street police team are on the hunt

0:13:46 > 0:13:50for the criminal gangs targeting cash machines.

0:13:50 > 0:13:51As they patrol,

0:13:51 > 0:13:55they think they've spotted two men behaving suspiciously.

0:13:55 > 0:13:58They could be planting skimmers on Oxford Street.

0:13:58 > 0:13:59Time to find out.

0:13:59 > 0:14:01I think I have one now.

0:14:03 > 0:14:05Police.

0:14:05 > 0:14:07The two men have just withdrawn cash,

0:14:07 > 0:14:11but no-one has seen if they were interfering with the cash machines.

0:14:11 > 0:14:14They seem surprised and are cooperating.

0:14:14 > 0:14:18- Is this your card, sir?- Yeah. - Right, saw you earlier,

0:14:18 > 0:14:21hanging around the cashpoint further down the road.

0:14:21 > 0:14:23On that basis, we get a lot of distraction thefts

0:14:23 > 0:14:25and a lot of devices put on ATMs.

0:14:25 > 0:14:28We're going to search you for articles for use in fraud

0:14:28 > 0:14:30and for stolen property.

0:14:30 > 0:14:33And officer Paul Penrose has met this man before.

0:14:33 > 0:14:37It's not first time. I remember this guy before in that other street.

0:14:37 > 0:14:41Maybe six months. This is second time he has made me have a check.

0:14:41 > 0:14:43Yeah, before.

0:14:46 > 0:14:48Thankfully, everyone's smiling.

0:14:48 > 0:14:52Despite some of their behaviour matching that of the skimmers,

0:14:52 > 0:14:55checks have confirmed the men have no previous

0:14:55 > 0:14:56and nothing suspicious on them.

0:14:56 > 0:15:01He walks very fast, going from ATM to ATM, but it's all checked out.

0:15:01 > 0:15:04Sometimes, there's an innocent explanation.

0:15:04 > 0:15:07- Have a good day. - Have a good day, you, too.

0:15:07 > 0:15:11The skimming gangs are hard to catch, and although this was a false alarm,

0:15:11 > 0:15:15stops like this are essential to try and root out the real criminals.

0:15:18 > 0:15:21And as Darren and the team continue their patrols,

0:15:21 > 0:15:25it's not long before they find more examples of the gangs at work.

0:15:25 > 0:15:28Another skimming device on another ATM.

0:15:29 > 0:15:34I've come along today, noticed an ATM that has been targeted before,

0:15:34 > 0:15:37seen there is a device on it from my experience before.

0:15:37 > 0:15:43Darren takes a closer look at this much more sophisticated skimmer.

0:15:43 > 0:15:46Your card would go in there and there'd be electronics

0:15:46 > 0:15:49before it goes in to the machine to skim your card,

0:15:49 > 0:15:53take the details off your card like any magnetic strip reader.

0:15:53 > 0:15:57They insert it into the mouth, glue it in position. Your card goes through there.

0:15:57 > 0:16:02Normally into the machine, you use the card and the machine perfectly normally, but as it's gone through,

0:16:02 > 0:16:05the electronics in here have skimmed your card details.

0:16:05 > 0:16:06So this is the camera,

0:16:06 > 0:16:11so that's been fixed across the legitimate cash sign...

0:16:13 > 0:16:16..with their own, as you can see, like that.

0:16:17 > 0:16:21It has a pinhole camera here, that tiny pinhole there,

0:16:21 > 0:16:25will read as you put your PIN number in.

0:16:25 > 0:16:28So they've got your card details and your PIN number.

0:16:28 > 0:16:31Then they can go away, make their own cards.

0:16:31 > 0:16:35With the skimmer in his hands, Darren recognises an opportunity

0:16:35 > 0:16:38to try and catch himself an elusive cash machine crook.

0:16:38 > 0:16:41Rather than remove the skimmer, he makes it safe

0:16:41 > 0:16:45and decides to wait across the street, in a nearby handbag shop.

0:16:45 > 0:16:49He hopes the crooks will turn up to retrieve their device.

0:16:55 > 0:16:59After 45 minutes of waiting, someone is using the machine

0:16:59 > 0:17:02and looks to be tampering with it.

0:17:02 > 0:17:06Unfortunately, it turns out to be a vigilant member of the public

0:17:06 > 0:17:08and he's told the bank staff.

0:17:08 > 0:17:09Darren decides to step in.

0:17:14 > 0:17:15Hi, guys. Police.

0:17:15 > 0:17:17We've been watching.

0:17:17 > 0:17:20We saw it a while ago, we've been waiting for somebody to come

0:17:20 > 0:17:23- and take it off. Obviously, not you guys.- Sorry.

0:17:23 > 0:17:27Cos I use this machine quite regularly, I was just trying

0:17:27 > 0:17:31to slide my card in and it was a little bit funny this time.

0:17:31 > 0:17:34And I know those things happen, especially in this area.

0:17:34 > 0:17:38And then I saw that the cash sign here was a little bit...

0:17:38 > 0:17:41sticking out, so I've touched and it moved.

0:17:41 > 0:17:43It got me scared for a second, but...

0:17:43 > 0:17:44Thanks, guys.

0:17:44 > 0:17:47No, no, no. That's one of those things.

0:17:47 > 0:17:50We were monitoring it for about an hour.

0:17:50 > 0:17:52They'll leave it on for up to five, six hours,

0:17:52 > 0:17:57getting everybody who uses that card machine's details,

0:17:57 > 0:18:00so that could be hundreds of people being victims of that type of crime.

0:18:00 > 0:18:04A few of those devices put in the area soon adds up

0:18:04 > 0:18:06to thousands of victims, so it's a priority crime.

0:18:06 > 0:18:11So far, Darren's hunt for the ATM gangs has drawn a blank twice.

0:18:13 > 0:18:18Later, there's another gang in action. Will Darren's luck change?

0:18:18 > 0:18:20Right, let's go.

0:18:26 > 0:18:28Outside the Dominion Theatre

0:18:28 > 0:18:32and celebrity photographer Andy Barnes is not having a good day.

0:18:32 > 0:18:36Just look at the state of that. That is incredible, that is.

0:18:36 > 0:18:38He was hoping to catch exclusive photos

0:18:38 > 0:18:41of the Britain's Got Talent judges.

0:18:41 > 0:18:45He got a glimpse of David Walliams, but missed Amanda Holden.

0:18:45 > 0:18:48But nobody's got anything at all. I just...

0:18:48 > 0:18:51I just find it quite amusing that the lengths they went to,

0:18:51 > 0:18:52trying to hide.

0:18:52 > 0:18:55He heads back to the front of the theatre,

0:18:55 > 0:18:58in the hope that Simon Cowell will be arriving there.

0:18:58 > 0:19:01It's getting close now cos he's only got about another quarter of an hour

0:19:01 > 0:19:04before he's got to be at the event, so...

0:19:04 > 0:19:07We're looking at about five or six points

0:19:07 > 0:19:09where he could possibly be, so...

0:19:10 > 0:19:14Andy waits it out at the front, but all the action is happening

0:19:14 > 0:19:19at the other door and Alesha Dixon sneaks in, away from Andy's lens.

0:19:20 > 0:19:23Then Andy sees a Rolls Royce sweeping past,

0:19:23 > 0:19:24heading round the back.

0:19:25 > 0:19:28He throws the bad leg back into action.

0:19:32 > 0:19:36It's the main event. Talent judge and media mogul Simon Cowell.

0:19:39 > 0:19:42Nice to see you, Simon.

0:19:42 > 0:19:44- Are you well? - Yeah, good.- Good, good, good.

0:19:44 > 0:19:47- How are you doing, OK? - Just getting one shot.

0:19:47 > 0:19:51Just one more, looking back, Simon. Lovely, thank you.

0:19:54 > 0:19:55Yeah, nice one.

0:19:55 > 0:19:56Oof!

0:19:56 > 0:19:59Dear me! I'm getting too old for this game now!

0:19:59 > 0:20:03And that's it for the day. It's been a mixed bag for Andy.

0:20:03 > 0:20:06He missed Alesha, and Amanda hid,

0:20:06 > 0:20:10but he's landed Walliams and the biggest fish of all, Cowell.

0:20:10 > 0:20:11They're not bad.

0:20:11 > 0:20:14Cowell always sells, so...

0:20:14 > 0:20:16That'll pay for a few coffees.

0:20:16 > 0:20:19I'm going to get these pictures sent off now.

0:20:19 > 0:20:21So...on to the next one.

0:20:22 > 0:20:24Good.

0:20:25 > 0:20:27That's the magic of Oxford Street.

0:20:27 > 0:20:31You never know what's going to happen from one day to the next.

0:20:40 > 0:20:42John Lewis, Oxford Street,

0:20:42 > 0:20:46is celebrating St David's Day with an action-packed Welsh food tasting.

0:20:46 > 0:20:49- What's it got to do with Wales? - It's made in Wales.

0:20:49 > 0:20:51- Oh, right.- In Ruthin.

0:20:51 > 0:20:53Lucinda is one of a dozen food samplers,

0:20:53 > 0:20:58getting shoppers to try and hopefully buy Welsh produce.

0:20:58 > 0:21:00- Ooh, hello. Feeding you.- Mm.

0:21:00 > 0:21:02And lunchtime has just arrived.

0:21:02 > 0:21:05You can take it from here, if you want. Thank you very much.

0:21:05 > 0:21:07Bye-bye. Take care.

0:21:07 > 0:21:09At lunchtime, people are ridiculously hungry.

0:21:09 > 0:21:11They realise something's going on

0:21:11 > 0:21:13and it's amazing how people's behaviour changes.

0:21:13 > 0:21:15They just ponder and then they just linger

0:21:15 > 0:21:19and they come back for another one and then they linger, another one.

0:21:19 > 0:21:21It's really funny. Hello. How are you?

0:21:21 > 0:21:25She ain't interested in any products. She's a hungry shopper.

0:21:25 > 0:21:27Meanwhile, on the other side of the store,

0:21:27 > 0:21:30a specially arranged choir is getting ready

0:21:30 > 0:21:32to stage a flash mob in the food hall.

0:21:32 > 0:21:36They plan to surprise shoppers by coming out of nowhere

0:21:36 > 0:21:40as shop staff and customers and singing traditional Welsh songs.

0:21:42 > 0:21:45They've had an enforced line-up change already,

0:21:45 > 0:21:48after their original alto had an accident on the Tube.

0:21:48 > 0:21:52But with substitute Becca in place, they're ready for the kick-off.

0:21:55 > 0:21:59# Mae bys Meri Ann wedi brifo

0:21:59 > 0:22:03# A Dafydd y gwas ddim yn iach

0:22:03 > 0:22:07# Mae'r baban yn y crud yn crio

0:22:07 > 0:22:12# A'r gath wedi sgramo Joni bach

0:22:12 > 0:22:16# Dai bach y sowldiwr

0:22:16 > 0:22:19# Dai bach y sowldiwr

0:22:19 > 0:22:24# Dai bach y sowldiwr

0:22:24 > 0:22:28# A'i gwt ei grys e mas

0:22:28 > 0:22:32# Sosban fach yn berwi ar y tan

0:22:32 > 0:22:36# Sosban fawr yn berwi ar y llawr

0:22:36 > 0:22:44# A'r gath wedi sgramo Joni bach. #

0:22:47 > 0:22:49CHEERS AND APPLAUSE

0:22:49 > 0:22:51It went very well.

0:22:51 > 0:22:55We were all quite nervous for it, but it went really well, I think.

0:22:55 > 0:23:00I felt quite strange because it's not every day you see

0:23:00 > 0:23:04someone next to the crisp aisle in Waitrose just burst in to song,

0:23:04 > 0:23:07performing in the middle of Oxford Street and making people

0:23:07 > 0:23:11stop for a second and it's quite an experience actually.

0:23:12 > 0:23:15It was quite good that I only knew about this half an hour ago,

0:23:15 > 0:23:18so I didn't have time to get nervous or think about what I was doing.

0:23:18 > 0:23:20Basically, get in and get the job done.

0:23:20 > 0:23:22Meanwhile, back at the food tasting,

0:23:22 > 0:23:25their aim was to get people trying Welsh foods

0:23:25 > 0:23:29they might not have tried before and hopefully, to make some sales.

0:23:29 > 0:23:32It's been busy. Tequila and cranberry is sold out.

0:23:32 > 0:23:33I've had one negative customer

0:23:33 > 0:23:37and then I killed her with lots of love and she left happy.

0:23:37 > 0:23:39I'm quite tempted to get a sales report.

0:23:39 > 0:23:41I usually get a sales report after I've done a sampling

0:23:41 > 0:23:43and it boosts me and motivates me.

0:23:43 > 0:23:47And it's the moment of truth for Lucinda and her fellow samplers.

0:23:47 > 0:23:51- Has it gone well?- It has, yes. - Oh, it has. Thank you.

0:23:51 > 0:23:54OK, so at least we sold something of everything.

0:23:54 > 0:23:57I've done OK. I mean, I think I could have done better.

0:23:58 > 0:24:00Here he is now.

0:24:02 > 0:24:06It's been actually quite good. We had about 74% sales.

0:24:06 > 0:24:08So I'm quite happy for that afternoon.

0:24:08 > 0:24:12The figures show that James has sold three-quarters of the stock

0:24:12 > 0:24:15he has in the food hall.

0:24:15 > 0:24:17And with that, it's all over for the day

0:24:17 > 0:24:20and as far as food hall manager Toni's concerned,

0:24:20 > 0:24:25it's been a successful one for Welsh food, Welsh wine and Welsh song.

0:24:25 > 0:24:29Sales were really good, especially the Welsh cakes.

0:24:29 > 0:24:32So I'm going to head home for a bit of cake and a nice glass of wine.

0:24:41 > 0:24:45The Oxford Street police team are dealing with a priority problem -

0:24:45 > 0:24:50gangs targeting cash machines to get their hands on shoppers' money.

0:24:50 > 0:24:53The ATM thieves are hard to catch, but back at the station,

0:24:53 > 0:24:57Darren thinks he might have just found a crucial lead.

0:24:57 > 0:24:59Footage has come in from an Oxford Street bank

0:24:59 > 0:25:02of another scam being committed.

0:25:02 > 0:25:06So, this is a classic ATM distraction theft.

0:25:06 > 0:25:09The two males here have targeted this female.

0:25:09 > 0:25:12They've encouraged her to use the ATM,

0:25:12 > 0:25:14she had initially used it but had problems with it.

0:25:14 > 0:25:17And they've convinced her to go back and as you can see,

0:25:17 > 0:25:20he's taken an angle where he can see her put the PIN number.

0:25:20 > 0:25:23Second member comes in and he's using a piece of paper to

0:25:23 > 0:25:26confuse the person at the ATM.

0:25:26 > 0:25:29And he's got the bank card, told his mate he's got the bank card

0:25:29 > 0:25:30and off he goes with it.

0:25:30 > 0:25:34She's now noticed something's wrong, but the second one's here

0:25:34 > 0:25:37to reassure her - oh, the card may have been swallowed by the machine.

0:25:37 > 0:25:39They're working a team,

0:25:39 > 0:25:42doing a number of these jobs across London every day.

0:25:42 > 0:25:47This female lost her card, and the guys then went to a nearby ATM

0:25:47 > 0:25:50and withdrew cash from the machines.

0:25:50 > 0:25:54And it turns out the gang tried the same distraction crime

0:25:54 > 0:25:56at the same machine just a few weeks before.

0:25:58 > 0:26:00But have they made a mistake?

0:26:00 > 0:26:04Darren Bond is a police super recogniser with a unique ability

0:26:04 > 0:26:07to recall the faces and features of regular offenders

0:26:07 > 0:26:12to help identify culprits on the street and on grainy CCTV.

0:26:12 > 0:26:13And in this case,

0:26:13 > 0:26:17he thinks he might have recognised the man in the footage.

0:26:17 > 0:26:21He's got a name and an address where his family lives.

0:26:23 > 0:26:26So, this morning, the team are heading up the motorway

0:26:26 > 0:26:30where they hope they'll find the suspect from the bank.

0:26:30 > 0:26:33He's got plenty of previous for ATM distraction thefts

0:26:33 > 0:26:36and that's what we're looking at in today.

0:26:36 > 0:26:38I've ID'd him from CCTV.

0:26:38 > 0:26:41Darren and the team have no way of knowing

0:26:41 > 0:26:44if their man is at the target address.

0:26:44 > 0:26:48The number of thefts related to ATMs has trebled in recent years.

0:26:48 > 0:26:53Hoping to make a dent in these figures, Darren heads in.

0:26:53 > 0:26:55OK. Right, let's go.

0:27:00 > 0:27:03Not quite as, er...picturesque

0:27:03 > 0:27:05or as affluent as Oxford Street,

0:27:05 > 0:27:08but we've got to go to the criminals where they live

0:27:08 > 0:27:10and get them out of their houses,

0:27:10 > 0:27:12then we'll take them back to nice, pleasant Westminster.

0:27:28 > 0:27:32Amazingly, the suspect is already behind bars for something else.

0:27:32 > 0:27:35How long's he been in since?

0:27:37 > 0:27:38Yesterday?

0:27:39 > 0:27:40For six years?

0:27:40 > 0:27:43Well, we'll have to go and talk to him in prison and...

0:27:43 > 0:27:46about some other offences.

0:27:46 > 0:27:49He's been sentenced to six years' imprisonment,

0:27:49 > 0:27:51from what his mother is telling us,

0:27:51 > 0:27:54that hasn't come up on the national computer yet,

0:27:54 > 0:27:56for similar offences, I would imagine,

0:27:56 > 0:27:58that we're wanting to talk to him about.

0:28:00 > 0:28:04It turns out the man was sentenced only the day before

0:28:04 > 0:28:07for a serious motoring offence.

0:28:07 > 0:28:11Darren's delighted that a serious criminal is safely behind bars,

0:28:11 > 0:28:15but his fight against the ATM gangs is far from over.

0:28:16 > 0:28:17It's an ongoing war,

0:28:17 > 0:28:20but a war we're coming up against and tackling as hard as we can.
