0:00:48 > 0:00:50On the trail of the pickpockets...

0:00:50 > 0:00:52Hi, Acting Sgt Bond.

0:00:52 > 0:00:54..police crack down.

0:00:54 > 0:00:55Cuffs.

0:00:56 > 0:00:58There's a flagship store opening...

0:00:58 > 0:01:01if they can get it ready on time.

0:01:01 > 0:01:02We're all upset about it.

0:01:02 > 0:01:04It's going to be open and this guy's not really working.

0:01:04 > 0:01:07It's not good enough, Mike. Not good enough at all.

0:01:07 > 0:01:09The streets' drains spring a surprise.

0:01:09 > 0:01:12- Ooh! - It really, really, really reeks.

0:01:20 > 0:01:24To make sure Oxford Street stays as one of the safest major

0:01:24 > 0:01:26shopping destinations in the world,

0:01:26 > 0:01:30the Metropolitan Police have set up a dedicated team just to police it

0:01:30 > 0:01:32known as ORB.

0:01:36 > 0:01:40Today, two plainclothes members of the team, Acting Sgt Darren Bond

0:01:40 > 0:01:44and PC Alex, are out on patrol in an unmarked car

0:01:44 > 0:01:47when a call comes through that snaps them into action.

0:01:58 > 0:02:01A security guard at a nearby shop has called to say

0:02:01 > 0:02:03he's spotted a suspected dipper,

0:02:03 > 0:02:07someone who surreptitiously fishes in bags to steal valuables.

0:02:07 > 0:02:11He believes he's seen her trying her luck in a customer's handbag

0:02:11 > 0:02:12and he's begun to follow her.

0:02:18 > 0:02:22The officers are only minutes away but moving far too slowly.

0:02:22 > 0:02:26Darren won't let the midday traffic come between him and a thief.

0:02:33 > 0:02:34Still on the wrong side of the road,

0:02:34 > 0:02:37Alex tries to get to the bottom of what's going on.

0:02:44 > 0:02:45Leaving the car on the pavement,

0:02:45 > 0:02:48they race towards the last sighting of the suspect.

0:02:53 > 0:02:56The officers have to catch up with her without being noticed.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59Although they have the security guard's report, they want to see

0:02:59 > 0:03:03if she'll try and steal again, so they can catch her in the act.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06She's walking up Regent Street, towards Oxford Street.

0:03:06 > 0:03:09They begin what they call the follow.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12So you really need this to play out, yeah? OK.

0:03:12 > 0:03:17The officers don't want her to see them and take every precaution.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19Just mix up the appearance a little bit.

0:03:19 > 0:03:21They follow for 300 metres,

0:03:21 > 0:03:24doing their best to stay at a safe distance.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27But the woman is no longer lingering in shops.

0:03:27 > 0:03:31She's walking a direct route to the Oxford Circus underground entrance,

0:03:31 > 0:03:34and Darren thinks he might be in trouble.

0:03:34 > 0:03:35I think she's spooked.

0:03:35 > 0:03:39Darren's sure the woman has now worked out she's being followed.

0:03:39 > 0:03:41She heads down the steps to the station.

0:03:41 > 0:03:43He can't risk losing her,

0:03:43 > 0:03:46so Darren makes the call for his colleague to move in.

0:03:48 > 0:03:49Cuffs.

0:03:53 > 0:03:55The search doesn't turn up anything of interest,

0:03:55 > 0:03:59but Darren wasn't expecting her to have any of the victim's property.

0:03:59 > 0:04:03In England, if you try to steal and put your hand in somebody's bag,

0:04:03 > 0:04:07you try to unzip somebody's handbag, that's an offence.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10PC Alex speaks to the security guard who first alerted them

0:04:10 > 0:04:13and is now back in his own shop retrieving the CCTV.

0:04:18 > 0:04:23And their investigations throw up something else totally unexpected.

0:04:23 > 0:04:27Despite being dressed like a wealthy Arab shopper in a headscarf,

0:04:27 > 0:04:31the woman is Bulgarian and, police believe, not a Muslim.

0:04:33 > 0:04:37She's not dangerous, so they take her back to the station in the same car.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40Darren thinks the headscarf is a disguise.

0:04:40 > 0:04:42It's very easy for them to dress up with a headscarf

0:04:42 > 0:04:45to look like another Arab female.

0:04:45 > 0:04:49Allows them to get close to their victims and not be noticed.

0:04:49 > 0:04:51Stand against here and look.

0:04:51 > 0:04:54It's an aggravating factor to the offence.

0:04:54 > 0:04:56Almost like going equipped to steal

0:04:56 > 0:04:58from somebody with a foil-lined bag, etc.

0:04:58 > 0:05:00She's using that as a disguise

0:05:00 > 0:05:03to allow her to facilitate her stealing.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06Running her details through the system has thrown up

0:05:06 > 0:05:07some interesting results.

0:05:07 > 0:05:12She is apparently known in Germany as a member of an organised crime gang

0:05:12 > 0:05:15and the address she's given doesn't feel right.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27We're going to try and see if that is a good address.

0:05:27 > 0:05:30If we're not happy, we're going to ask the custody sergeant

0:05:30 > 0:05:33to consider not giving her bail, put her straight in front of the court.

0:05:35 > 0:05:40Over 300 notes in the police database for one address rings alarm bells.

0:05:40 > 0:05:42They think she might be giving out a common holding address

0:05:42 > 0:05:45that's nothing to do with her.

0:05:45 > 0:05:48This is something they want to check out.

0:05:48 > 0:05:52Sgt Carling decides to take a small team to go and have a look.

0:05:53 > 0:05:56Later, the team reach the address,

0:05:56 > 0:05:59but it looks like someone's been here before them.

0:05:59 > 0:06:01This door has been put in by the police.

0:06:09 > 0:06:13Opening a new flagship store on Oxford Street is a big deal.

0:06:13 > 0:06:16Soaring rents in such a prime shopping location

0:06:16 > 0:06:21mean it's expensive and any new arrival has to be profitable.

0:06:21 > 0:06:24And the best way to ensure your new place is a smash hit

0:06:24 > 0:06:28is to make as big a splash as possible with the opening.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31Which is what trainer chain JD is planning to do

0:06:31 > 0:06:34with its brand-new flagship Oxford Street store.

0:06:35 > 0:06:38It's a massive undertaking for the chain.

0:06:38 > 0:06:40It's the biggest shop that we've ever opened.

0:06:40 > 0:06:43At the moment, we've got an empty shell, and in under a week,

0:06:43 > 0:06:46we'll have a brand-new megastore to open for everyone.

0:06:46 > 0:06:49So today, we've got 12 18-tonne trucks coming

0:06:49 > 0:06:51with all the stock on them.

0:06:51 > 0:06:53Shop manager James is in charge of getting

0:06:53 > 0:06:57all 216 tonnes of stock into the store.

0:06:57 > 0:06:58All right, guys!

0:06:58 > 0:07:01Get everyone spread out and then we'll start loading it off.

0:07:02 > 0:07:04To cope with such a massive new store,

0:07:04 > 0:07:08the company has invested in some cutting-edge tech wizardry.

0:07:09 > 0:07:12They've got a brand-new bespoke trainer lift.

0:07:12 > 0:07:15It's been designed to get trainers from the stock room shelf

0:07:15 > 0:07:18to customers' feet in no more than 30 seconds.

0:07:20 > 0:07:22It should be running constantly,

0:07:22 > 0:07:27but the experimental technology is having teething problems.

0:07:27 > 0:07:29You can see here that somebody has actually

0:07:29 > 0:07:31pushed the boxes forward too much.

0:07:31 > 0:07:33"Do not push the boxes forward."

0:07:33 > 0:07:35And now we have to restart the system.

0:07:36 > 0:07:38This should be idiot proof.

0:07:38 > 0:07:41No doubt some idiot will find a way of causing a problem

0:07:41 > 0:07:43that I'll have to come back and address.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46The shop have only got a week to get

0:07:46 > 0:07:48the lift up and running properly before they open.

0:07:48 > 0:07:51While the shop team work on getting that right, across town,

0:07:51 > 0:07:53JD are working on something else

0:07:53 > 0:07:55to make sure the opening goes with a bang.

0:07:55 > 0:07:59JD's marketing team have set up a nationwide competition

0:07:59 > 0:08:02to find a new face for the Oxford Street store.

0:08:05 > 0:08:08Thousands of youngsters have attended photo shoots

0:08:08 > 0:08:11up and down the UK to try and get chosen.

0:08:11 > 0:08:16The winners will be plastered on advertising across the new shop.

0:08:16 > 0:08:20It's the brainchild of marketing director Steve White.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23It gives a reality to the people that we photograph and use

0:08:23 > 0:08:25cos they come from an everyday stable.

0:08:25 > 0:08:27The main thing is, I would say, close to the consumer.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30Every time I take a photo, I want to see something a bit different, OK?

0:08:30 > 0:08:32- A bit different?- That's great.

0:08:34 > 0:08:38And a week later in Manchester, Steve's overseeing the final audition

0:08:38 > 0:08:41with the winners of the regional heats.

0:08:41 > 0:08:44- Come on, smile. That's it! Cool. - That's great.

0:08:44 > 0:08:48Brooke was selected in London and is one of the first on set.

0:08:48 > 0:08:50She's good but needs some coaching.

0:08:50 > 0:08:51Just take the tension out of your legs.

0:08:51 > 0:08:55So just slightly bring them forward, your knees. Slightly relax them.

0:08:55 > 0:08:57It's quite a change for Charlie,

0:08:57 > 0:09:00who was preparing to join the Royal Marines.

0:09:00 > 0:09:04Getting used to people just jumping in and fixing things.

0:09:04 > 0:09:06It's all part of the job, I suppose.

0:09:06 > 0:09:09- Just been demonstrating how to model.- You have? How brilliant.

0:09:09 > 0:09:11HE LAUGHS

0:09:11 > 0:09:12Have you seen my legs?

0:09:12 > 0:09:15Steve's legs might not impress but Ramone,

0:09:15 > 0:09:19who came through the Manchester casting, certainly does.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22He's got that dead masculine structure to the top of his body,

0:09:22 > 0:09:23- hasn't he?- Fantastic.

0:09:23 > 0:09:25It's still early but the photographers

0:09:25 > 0:09:27already have some favourites.

0:09:27 > 0:09:30- It's really good. I love that. - Yeah, she's brilliant.

0:09:30 > 0:09:33- Good. A good find, then. - Yeah.- Great.

0:09:33 > 0:09:37If I could be the face of JD Oxford Street, that would just be amazing.

0:09:37 > 0:09:39Absolutely loved it, can't wait to come back.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41Fingers crossed I will be a winner.

0:09:43 > 0:09:46Both Charlie and Brooke, as well as fellow finalist Ramone,

0:09:46 > 0:09:51were selected to be the faces of the new Oxford Street store.

0:09:51 > 0:09:53- This is mental! - HE LAUGHS

0:09:53 > 0:09:57Later, it's the day before the opening and the boss is in town.

0:09:57 > 0:09:58Here he comes.

0:09:58 > 0:10:01And the store's teething problems continue.

0:10:01 > 0:10:03I haven't got a clue at the moment.

0:10:11 > 0:10:13Visitors come to Oxford Street to soak up

0:10:13 > 0:10:17the glamour of its high-end stores and luxury products.

0:10:17 > 0:10:19What they don't see is the work

0:10:19 > 0:10:23that goes on behind the scenes to keep it running.

0:10:23 > 0:10:27There's a small army of tradesmen and engineers that operate unseen.

0:10:27 > 0:10:30And one of those is Dave Taylor.

0:10:30 > 0:10:33He's been a plumber for over 20 years.

0:10:33 > 0:10:36Today, he's covering the West End of London.

0:10:36 > 0:10:39And at the centre of that patch is Oxford Street.

0:10:40 > 0:10:42The West End ain't my favourite place.

0:10:42 > 0:10:44I'd rather much be out in the suburbs

0:10:44 > 0:10:46on a lovely little cul-de-sac somewhere

0:10:46 > 0:10:49having a nice cup of tea and unblocking an old lady's drain.

0:10:49 > 0:10:50But it's not always like that.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53Today, he's primed for emergency callouts,

0:10:53 > 0:10:56and that could mean anything and everything.

0:10:56 > 0:11:01Out in the van, it's not long before he gets his first call of the day.

0:11:01 > 0:11:05Hello? Yeah, I'll be as quick as I can. I'm in the area.

0:11:05 > 0:11:07Place just off the back of Oxford Street.

0:11:07 > 0:11:10Old lady seems to be in a bit of a panic. Very bad smells.

0:11:12 > 0:11:14Moments later, Dave's at the address.

0:11:14 > 0:11:18Nina runs a beauty PR company from the ground floor of her home.

0:11:18 > 0:11:21- Nina?- Yes, hi.- Dave Taylor. - Hi, Dave.- How are you doing?

0:11:21 > 0:11:24She's got some kind of plumbing problem in her boardroom,

0:11:24 > 0:11:26and it's not very nice.

0:11:26 > 0:11:29Yes, this is where all my clients come and it stinks.

0:11:29 > 0:11:34- OK.- Keep getting a really horrible smell in here.- OK.

0:11:34 > 0:11:36Nina needs the problem sorted.

0:11:36 > 0:11:40She has to be able to meet with clients here.

0:11:40 > 0:11:44Everything here is about beautiful smells and lovely products.

0:11:44 > 0:11:46It's slightly embarrassing, to say the least,

0:11:46 > 0:11:49that they come to this prestigious PR consultancy

0:11:49 > 0:11:53to just smell this rank smell of drains, actually.

0:11:53 > 0:11:55Drains, sewage.

0:11:56 > 0:12:00Dave moves outside to have a look under the manhole by the front door.

0:12:01 > 0:12:03Ooh, there's your problem!

0:12:04 > 0:12:07Ooh! Wow!

0:12:07 > 0:12:09HE COUGHS

0:12:09 > 0:12:10That is pretty straightforward,

0:12:10 > 0:12:12to tell you where the smell's coming from.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15I would say that's been blocked for quite a while because...

0:12:15 > 0:12:19..that is extra thick compacted sewage.

0:12:20 > 0:12:22That...

0:12:22 > 0:12:23is not good.

0:12:23 > 0:12:27Dave's seen a lot of drains, and it takes a lot of sewage to impress him.

0:12:27 > 0:12:29But he can't resist sharing the experience.

0:12:29 > 0:12:32- Hi, Nina?- Coming down.

0:12:32 > 0:12:34- Have you got a second, sweetheart? - Yeah, yeah, yeah.

0:12:34 > 0:12:35Oh, no!

0:12:35 > 0:12:38- Look.- Oh, I can't bear it. That...

0:12:38 > 0:12:40It shouldn't be there, it should be down below the ground.

0:12:40 > 0:12:45- It should be gone.- Grace? Gracie!

0:12:45 > 0:12:47- That's the whole street's. - No, that's you.

0:12:47 > 0:12:49SHE LAUGHS

0:12:49 > 0:12:51It's disgusting.

0:12:51 > 0:12:52I've never seen anything like that.

0:12:54 > 0:12:56Yeah, not very nice. Not very nice.

0:12:56 > 0:12:58Dave's found the problem,

0:12:58 > 0:13:01but now he has to work out how to deal with it.

0:13:01 > 0:13:03I need to get it clear to see if there could be something

0:13:03 > 0:13:05stuck in the trap at the bottom.

0:13:05 > 0:13:06It could be collapsed.

0:13:06 > 0:13:08He's got a high-pressure hose in his van

0:13:08 > 0:13:12and he taps into the mains water supply down the street.

0:13:12 > 0:13:16Until he can clean out the drain, he won't know if it's a simple fix.

0:13:16 > 0:13:17If he can't get it running,

0:13:17 > 0:13:20Nina might have to put up with the smell for a while.

0:13:22 > 0:13:24What I'm trying to do here -

0:13:24 > 0:13:26it's probably going to smell a bit worse now -

0:13:26 > 0:13:28I'm going to try and break this up a bit on the top,

0:13:28 > 0:13:29this crust.

0:13:30 > 0:13:35Later, we'll see if Dave can get Nina's pipes flowing again.

0:13:35 > 0:13:36It's pretty nasty.

0:13:44 > 0:13:47Back at the new JD store on Oxford Street,

0:13:47 > 0:13:51it's 24 hours until opening, and there's still much to do.

0:13:51 > 0:13:53Oh, no, not like that!

0:13:54 > 0:13:55No!

0:13:55 > 0:13:57The last-minute preparations continue.

0:13:57 > 0:14:01Downstairs, Steve is waiting for chairman Peter Cowgill

0:14:01 > 0:14:02to show off his team's work.

0:14:02 > 0:14:04Where is he now? I'm getting anxious.

0:14:04 > 0:14:06Has he got lost? Here he comes!

0:14:07 > 0:14:10- Welcome to the new store, chairman.- Thank you.

0:14:10 > 0:14:13Immediately, Peter spots something he doesn't like.

0:14:13 > 0:14:14We don't need the G.

0:14:14 > 0:14:16The problem with the G is, obviously,

0:14:16 > 0:14:18I think there are very few people who don't understand

0:14:18 > 0:14:19that they're on the ground floor

0:14:19 > 0:14:21when they've just walked in off the pavement,

0:14:21 > 0:14:25so I don't really think we need to tell 'em that, G for ground.

0:14:25 > 0:14:27Steve here will have that done for Monday.

0:14:27 > 0:14:29Certainly, chairman. Certainly.

0:14:29 > 0:14:31Aside from some minor design quibbles,

0:14:31 > 0:14:33Peter's pleased with the shop.

0:14:33 > 0:14:36I mean, it's on the prime street in Europe, top of the tree.

0:14:36 > 0:14:39Um, and I've not seen anything that competes with it.

0:14:39 > 0:14:42The marketing team are also in town.

0:14:42 > 0:14:46Last time, we saw them pick three faces of JD -

0:14:46 > 0:14:50Brooke, Charlie and Ramone.

0:14:50 > 0:14:54And it's Ramone they've brought with them to film a special video

0:14:54 > 0:14:57to showcase some more of the store's new technology.

0:14:57 > 0:15:00And he's been working on a new look for the occasion.

0:15:00 > 0:15:03I think they quite like it when I look stern.

0:15:03 > 0:15:05Um, so I've nicknamed that one Black Steel,

0:15:05 > 0:15:07because I use it quite regularly now.

0:15:07 > 0:15:09Then give us the Black Steel.

0:15:11 > 0:15:13Looking cool. Cool as you like, innit?

0:15:13 > 0:15:14HE LAUGHS

0:15:14 > 0:15:16He nails it every time!

0:15:17 > 0:15:21After months of planning, the new store is ready.

0:15:21 > 0:15:24The doors will open at 9am tomorrow morning.

0:15:24 > 0:15:26Regional manager Kevin is a happy man.

0:15:26 > 0:15:28Just wanted to thank everyone, it's been fantastic.

0:15:28 > 0:15:30Thanks very much and well done.

0:15:33 > 0:15:36But the store has one final challenge to throw at them,

0:15:36 > 0:15:39the escalator to the first floor has broken.

0:15:39 > 0:15:44Manager Moz has tried turning it off and on again, but that hasn't worked.

0:15:44 > 0:15:45It's not happening, mate.

0:15:46 > 0:15:48An engineer is called.

0:15:48 > 0:15:52If it can't be fixed, staff will have to direct customers

0:15:52 > 0:15:56to the upper floors through the shop via the stairs or lift.

0:15:56 > 0:15:58All right. So, boys, I'll see you in the morning, yeah?

0:15:58 > 0:15:59HE LAUGHS

0:16:05 > 0:16:09Finally, at 11.30pm, the engineer arrives.

0:16:09 > 0:16:13But it's immediately apparent this might not be a simple fix.

0:16:13 > 0:16:14I haven't got a clue at the moment.

0:16:15 > 0:16:17Is it a case of one of the belts going?

0:16:17 > 0:16:19I just don't know, there's something not right there.

0:16:19 > 0:16:22The reset button feels a bit moody and all.

0:16:22 > 0:16:25The store opens at nine o'clock tomorrow morning.

0:16:25 > 0:16:28We have up until then to get this sorted,

0:16:28 > 0:16:30so we're working on the next nine hours.

0:16:30 > 0:16:34Later, the success of opening day hangs by a shoelace.

0:16:34 > 0:16:38- Sweetie, you got a scanner?- They're all dead.- They're all dead?- Yes!

0:16:47 > 0:16:52At a property just off Oxford Street, plumber Dave Taylor is battling

0:16:52 > 0:16:55a huge back-up of sewage at PR consultant Nina's house.

0:16:55 > 0:16:59It's disgusting. I've never seen anything like that.

0:16:59 > 0:17:02He thinks the drain's been blocked up for a while.

0:17:02 > 0:17:05So you wouldn't drive your car, would you, for three years

0:17:05 > 0:17:06without servicing it?

0:17:06 > 0:17:07It's a bit like a drain.

0:17:07 > 0:17:10People think they can chuck everything down the drain

0:17:10 > 0:17:12and it's just all going to go away. Well, actually, it don't.

0:17:12 > 0:17:15So they need a bit of service every now and again.

0:17:16 > 0:17:20Dave's used to the smell, but Nina is struggling to cope.

0:17:20 > 0:17:22It really, really, really, really reeks.

0:17:24 > 0:17:26But thank God we've got some candles.

0:17:26 > 0:17:27Candles?

0:17:27 > 0:17:30Probably won't make any difference at all, but you know...

0:17:30 > 0:17:33Luckily as a beauty PR, Nina has a number of different products

0:17:33 > 0:17:36to try and cover up the odour.

0:17:36 > 0:17:38I've got to say, the smell is so, so bad.

0:17:40 > 0:17:44Oh, that nothing is going to do it, nothing's going to do it.

0:17:44 > 0:17:47Outside, Dave is still trying to get to the bottom of the sewage problem.

0:17:47 > 0:17:48Keeps you fit!

0:17:49 > 0:17:52You see, that's what happens, it gets caught in there.

0:17:52 > 0:17:53There's a big U-bend there.

0:17:54 > 0:17:57Finally, with the blockage removed, it's clear.

0:17:57 > 0:18:01After a hose down and some disinfectant, it's all good as new.

0:18:01 > 0:18:04- Thank you so much.- It was my pleasure, you're more than welcome.

0:18:04 > 0:18:06Thank you. OK, I'm going to go and do the big flush.

0:18:06 > 0:18:09- Yeah, on both toilets, yeah? - Yeah, OK.

0:18:10 > 0:18:12Perfect, that's how they're supposed to work.

0:18:12 > 0:18:14It's taken an hour and a half,

0:18:14 > 0:18:17but Dave's got everything working again.

0:18:17 > 0:18:19Nina, however, has another problem.

0:18:19 > 0:18:22Since you've done that, I'm now hearing in my wall by my desk

0:18:22 > 0:18:26this scratching. I absolutely promise you, three times.

0:18:27 > 0:18:29Scratching on the wall.

0:18:29 > 0:18:31If you've got rats, they've come in from somewhere else

0:18:31 > 0:18:33and they've got in behind the cavity.

0:18:33 > 0:18:34That scratching continues,

0:18:34 > 0:18:38- you're probably better off to get pest control in, all right?- OK.

0:18:38 > 0:18:40- Sorry about that. - No, don't you worry.

0:18:40 > 0:18:42- I can sort your drain out but... - No, no!

0:18:42 > 0:18:44HE LAUGHS

0:18:44 > 0:18:46And with that, Dave's done.

0:18:46 > 0:18:48Another happy customer. And he can get back on the road,

0:18:48 > 0:18:51ready for the next Oxford Street flood or blockage.

0:18:55 > 0:18:58Oh, God, it's going again, Grace!

0:19:05 > 0:19:09The Oxford Street police team have arrested a suspected pickpocket

0:19:09 > 0:19:11who was posing as a wealthy Arab shopper.

0:19:11 > 0:19:14Stand against here and look.

0:19:14 > 0:19:16She's provided them with an address,

0:19:16 > 0:19:19and now they're on their way to check it out.

0:19:19 > 0:19:21But they have their suspicions about it.

0:19:21 > 0:19:24They think it might be a fake holding address.

0:19:24 > 0:19:26If they have reason to believe she doesn't live there,

0:19:26 > 0:19:28then they won't need to bail her

0:19:28 > 0:19:32and can keep her overnight to charge her the next day.

0:19:32 > 0:19:34They arrive at the building.

0:19:34 > 0:19:37They are looking for someone to corroborate the woman lives here.

0:19:37 > 0:19:40But already, her story is beginning to fall apart.

0:19:41 > 0:19:47She put 1/4, we've got 8. So we shall try each one in turn.

0:19:50 > 0:19:51They're in.

0:19:51 > 0:19:54And although they still don't know which door is their target,

0:19:54 > 0:19:56one stands out.

0:19:56 > 0:19:58My first impression is, at some point,

0:19:58 > 0:20:00this door has been put in by the police.

0:20:00 > 0:20:04Because that damage and that damage has been caused by a door enforcer.

0:20:04 > 0:20:06OK, so this looks a good place to start.

0:20:09 > 0:20:13Without confirmation she lives there, they can't enter without a warrant.

0:20:15 > 0:20:18There's no sound from inside, so they move on.

0:20:20 > 0:20:24- Hello? Sgt Carling, Met Police. - Yeah?- We are looking for a...

0:20:24 > 0:20:29- Natalia Simionova.- Do you know who she is? You don't know?- No.

0:20:29 > 0:20:31- No luck here.- All right, let's keep trying flats.

0:20:35 > 0:20:37- Nor here.- We're looking for...

0:20:38 > 0:20:41- This lady.- I don't know her. - You don't know, yeah?

0:20:41 > 0:20:42I'm still working here.

0:20:42 > 0:20:45The neighbours either don't know her or don't want to help the police.

0:20:45 > 0:20:47The officer checks the roof

0:20:47 > 0:20:50while his colleagues go through the communal post.

0:20:50 > 0:20:52Their target's name isn't on anything.

0:20:52 > 0:20:55Obviously, because we can't get access into her property,

0:20:55 > 0:20:57she didn't have any keys with her for us to access,

0:20:57 > 0:20:59no-one else is in the property.

0:20:59 > 0:21:02So we're going to have to give up on searching the property.

0:21:04 > 0:21:07The police can find nothing to indicate that the woman lives here.

0:21:07 > 0:21:10Their suspicion remains that the address is a fake.

0:21:10 > 0:21:13The lack of proof that this is her residence means the police

0:21:13 > 0:21:15don't have to grant her bail

0:21:15 > 0:21:19as there's too much risk she could evade court.

0:21:19 > 0:21:20Oh, OK.

0:21:20 > 0:21:22As they prepare to return to the station,

0:21:22 > 0:21:26Sgt Carling gets a call with more good news.

0:21:26 > 0:21:29PC Alex has been talking to the manager of another shop

0:21:29 > 0:21:32who thinks the suspect paid them a recent visit, too.

0:21:32 > 0:21:37The manager's just looked at the CCTV, seen her face and he says

0:21:37 > 0:21:41that she matches the description of someone who did a pickpocket there.

0:21:41 > 0:21:43Same venue on the 16th of August.

0:21:45 > 0:21:47Footage clearly shows the woman entering the shop

0:21:47 > 0:21:50and finding a likely victim.

0:21:50 > 0:21:53She takes a shirt from a rack to use as a cover

0:21:53 > 0:21:55to try and get her hand in the victim's bag.

0:22:00 > 0:22:04On the basis of this evidence and that of their earlier security guard,

0:22:04 > 0:22:06the custody sergeant agrees with the team.

0:22:06 > 0:22:09With no confidence the woman has given her real address,

0:22:09 > 0:22:11she isn't bailed.

0:22:11 > 0:22:14Instead, she'll be kept in the station cells overnight.

0:22:16 > 0:22:18Now we're going to the Crown Prosecution Service

0:22:18 > 0:22:20with the evidence that we've got,

0:22:20 > 0:22:23and we'll put her through to courts tomorrow, hopefully.

0:22:24 > 0:22:27And after we filmed, the woman pleaded guilty

0:22:27 > 0:22:31to one count of theft from person and one count of attempted theft.

0:22:32 > 0:22:36She was given a 12-week sentence in total for both offences,

0:22:36 > 0:22:39a result the team are delighted with.

0:22:50 > 0:22:52As dawn breaks on Oxford Street,

0:22:52 > 0:22:54it's all hands on deck at trainer store JD.

0:22:56 > 0:22:59It's opening day for their brand-new world flagship store.

0:23:00 > 0:23:03Manager James is working hard.

0:23:03 > 0:23:07- Unfortunately, his main escalator is not.- It's broken.

0:23:08 > 0:23:11My team were here till midnight last night trying to resolve the issue

0:23:11 > 0:23:16and the engineer was meant to be in again at 8.15 this morning but...

0:23:16 > 0:23:20It's now 8.30 and it's not been resolved, so we'll see what happens.

0:23:20 > 0:23:23In a competitive market and paying prime rents,

0:23:23 > 0:23:25the shop's got to do well.

0:23:25 > 0:23:27And a successful launch is critical.

0:23:27 > 0:23:30Regional manager Kevin Dalston

0:23:30 > 0:23:33is another who's put months of planning into getting it right.

0:23:33 > 0:23:37We got a shop that's going to be open. And this guy's not going to be working.

0:23:37 > 0:23:39- We're all upset about it, Kevin. - It's not good enough.

0:23:39 > 0:23:40Not good enough at all.

0:23:40 > 0:23:44While they wait, James has no option but to continue as planned

0:23:44 > 0:23:47and give his staff one last encouraging word.

0:23:47 > 0:23:49Well, I think what we've achieved over the last

0:23:49 > 0:23:51couple of weeks has been amazing.

0:23:51 > 0:23:55Obviously, you're all here because you deserve to be, all right?

0:23:55 > 0:23:57All right, guys. Good luck today and just enjoy it.

0:24:00 > 0:24:02Finally, the engineer has arrived,

0:24:02 > 0:24:0520 minutes after they were expecting him

0:24:05 > 0:24:08and less than half an hour before they wanted to start trading.

0:24:08 > 0:24:12- Is it... Is it sortable? - It should be, yeah.

0:24:15 > 0:24:18While the engineers battle to get the escalator working,

0:24:18 > 0:24:19preparations continue around it.

0:24:21 > 0:24:25- OTHERS LAUGH - I love that! Excellent. Wicked.

0:24:25 > 0:24:28But as the nine o'clock opening draws near,

0:24:28 > 0:24:31Steve and the team are forced to make a big call.

0:24:31 > 0:24:35Nine o'clock, couple of minutes now, about 9.07.

0:24:35 > 0:24:37We're going to put the opening back to 9.30.

0:24:37 > 0:24:40So the shutters will be coming up at 9.30.

0:24:40 > 0:24:42All in a day's work.

0:24:42 > 0:24:45Ten minutes later, the engineer's job is done

0:24:45 > 0:24:47and the escalator finally starts.

0:24:47 > 0:24:50You can't explain how happy I am that this is working.

0:24:50 > 0:24:51How proud are we now?

0:24:51 > 0:24:56We're up and running and in fact, ten minutes earlier than 9.30.

0:24:56 > 0:24:57The store bursts into life.

0:25:03 > 0:25:04Before long, however,

0:25:04 > 0:25:08there are problems with getting shoes to the customers to try on.

0:25:08 > 0:25:10Yeah, I've been waiting for about 15 minutes.

0:25:10 > 0:25:14It's obviously opening-day, so I'm not expecting it to be quick.

0:25:14 > 0:25:18It's not just them waiting. The trainer lift has stopped.

0:25:18 > 0:25:21It's just tripping out. It's going to slow us down.

0:25:22 > 0:25:25Without the technology the store relies on, it's impossible

0:25:25 > 0:25:30for the stock room staff to meet the 30-second trainer delivery target.

0:25:30 > 0:25:32You on it? You need to be a little bit quicker. Yeah?

0:25:32 > 0:25:34Maybe get two people...

0:25:34 > 0:25:36Stock room - Ben to the lift, Ben to the lift.

0:25:36 > 0:25:38With the main lift still out of action,

0:25:38 > 0:25:41problems emerge with more of the store's new tech.

0:25:41 > 0:25:45Floor staff have scanners to read barcodes on the display shoes

0:25:45 > 0:25:47to order them from the stock room.

0:25:47 > 0:25:52It's only mid-afternoon and all of the scanners have got flat batteries.

0:25:52 > 0:25:55- Sweetie, you got a scanner?- They're all dead.- They're all dead?- Yes!

0:25:55 > 0:25:58We're trying to order trainers, but all the scanners are dead,

0:25:58 > 0:26:01so we're going to use the radios now.

0:26:01 > 0:26:03Which no-one has prepared for.

0:26:03 > 0:26:06Stock room, stock room, stock room, stock room.

0:26:06 > 0:26:08No-one answers.

0:26:08 > 0:26:12Sales Assistant Anthony can't get anything for customers to try on.

0:26:12 > 0:26:16This is not how JD saw opening-day going.

0:26:16 > 0:26:19- That means I can't order trainers. - Clear your orders.

0:26:19 > 0:26:20Clear your orders, please.

0:26:20 > 0:26:22Downstairs, with neither the lift

0:26:22 > 0:26:26nor the electronic ordering system working, staff are feeling the heat.

0:26:26 > 0:26:29Down here, everyone's sweating. It's all a bit stressed.

0:26:29 > 0:26:32Technology is letting us down today. Let's just say that.

0:26:32 > 0:26:35But cometh the hour, cometh the man.

0:26:35 > 0:26:38Floor manager Moz takes things into his own hands.

0:26:38 > 0:26:41First, he finds replacement batteries upstairs,

0:26:41 > 0:26:45so his floor staff can get back to full functionality,

0:26:45 > 0:26:46before heading downstairs

0:26:46 > 0:26:49to single-handedly get things moving again.

0:26:49 > 0:26:51Next one, now it's coming.

0:26:51 > 0:26:53Superstar childrens.

0:26:53 > 0:26:57Got to go 727, size two, please.

0:26:57 > 0:26:59Come on, guys! It's 20 seconds now.

0:26:59 > 0:27:03Trainers should be out in 30 seconds. You got it?

0:27:04 > 0:27:07He even finds time to reset the lift.

0:27:07 > 0:27:09For the third time today.

0:27:09 > 0:27:11Starting again? Setting up and all.

0:27:11 > 0:27:12It's working now, it's going to work.

0:27:14 > 0:27:17With the machine back in action and the party still going,

0:27:17 > 0:27:20it's down to the staff to try and reach that sales target

0:27:20 > 0:27:21in the time left.

0:27:24 > 0:27:26You want these, huh? I'll put these at the till.

0:27:26 > 0:27:27Connor, Connor!

0:27:31 > 0:27:35Now two of the new faces of JD, Charlie and Brooke,

0:27:35 > 0:27:39make their appearance and see their pictures for the first time.

0:27:39 > 0:27:41- Oh, my God! - SHE GIGGLES

0:27:41 > 0:27:44- That's so crazy.- We are everywhere.

0:27:45 > 0:27:47This is a mental!

0:27:47 > 0:27:49- Two of me.- Three, three!

0:27:49 > 0:27:50You can't speak, can you?

0:27:50 > 0:27:53- Not yet, it's cool. - Speechless.- It's so cool.

0:27:53 > 0:27:55I think we're all speechless, really.

0:27:55 > 0:27:58A new store opening is always a step into the unknown.

0:27:58 > 0:28:01Moz has had to do some firefighting.

0:28:01 > 0:28:04Everyone's struggling, but you learn from your mistakes, innit?

0:28:04 > 0:28:06You learn every single day, that's how I learn.

0:28:08 > 0:28:11At 9pm, finally the shutters come down.

0:28:11 > 0:28:13All right, listen. I've said it all week.

0:28:13 > 0:28:16I want to say thank you and I want to say well done. All right?

0:28:16 > 0:28:18OTHERS CLAP

0:28:18 > 0:28:20It's been a difficult day,

0:28:20 > 0:28:23but the team still manage to beat their sale targets.

0:28:23 > 0:28:27It just goes to show the power of a flagship store on Oxford Street.
