0:00:38 > 0:00:42Maurizio's farm in the southern Tuscan hills is up for sale.

0:00:46 > 0:00:47Before he sells,

0:00:47 > 0:00:51he's handing over the running of his business to ten strangers.

0:00:51 > 0:00:54- Hello.- Hello.- Bottoms up.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56They all share the same dream...

0:00:56 > 0:00:59I am too young to go in my rocking chair quite yet.

0:01:01 > 0:01:04..of starting a new life in Italy.

0:01:04 > 0:01:08Being a farmer, living in Tuscany, is what I should be doing.

0:01:08 > 0:01:12But this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity comes with responsibility.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15- What have you done all morning? - You will not get an answer from me.

0:01:17 > 0:01:22By taking over the whole farm, they must tend the 13-acre vineyard...

0:01:22 > 0:01:24It's just really, really hard work.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28..and five acres of olive trees.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31The little babies are starting to be made into oil.

0:01:31 > 0:01:34As well as breathe new life into the bed and breakfast...

0:01:34 > 0:01:36I can't quite believe this is happening.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38..and serve food to paying customers.

0:01:38 > 0:01:42Come with us to our...ristorante.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47This is their chance to put their dreams to the test.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50MESSAGE IN ITALIAN: Nove, due, zero, due...

0:01:50 > 0:01:54We perhaps need someone who speaks Italian to know what that's saying.

0:01:54 > 0:01:59After two months, will any of the group decide to buy the farm together?

0:01:59 > 0:02:03I'd never be able to afford to do this sort of thing on my own.

0:02:03 > 0:02:07Or will they find other ways to make Tuscany their new home?

0:02:07 > 0:02:09What could possibly go wrong?

0:02:25 > 0:02:28This is beautiful scenery.

0:02:30 > 0:02:35It's the beginning of the group's second week at the Banditaccia farm

0:02:35 > 0:02:37and they're settling in to their new way of life.

0:02:37 > 0:02:43Every day, walking the electric fence at six in the morning,

0:02:43 > 0:02:47I get to see the light, the dawn break over Tuscany.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50It's wonderful.

0:02:51 > 0:02:53So the dream I have...

0:02:55 > 0:02:56..is happening.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02This is why I like getting up early because...

0:03:03 > 0:03:04..it's just beautiful.

0:03:08 > 0:03:09Hello, girls.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13Look at the colours on that one.

0:03:13 > 0:03:17- They're beautiful.- I am actually bowled over with Tuscany.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20I love it much more than I thought I would.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22This is magical.

0:03:23 > 0:03:24- Hey!- Have you found one?

0:03:26 > 0:03:29- Oh, wow.- It's only tiny.

0:03:45 > 0:03:48- Morning.- Buongiorno.

0:03:52 > 0:03:53Freshly laid chicken eggs.

0:03:53 > 0:03:55Yeah, these eggs are from our chicken.

0:03:55 > 0:03:57Two yesterday and one today.

0:03:59 > 0:04:00Yay, look at that!

0:04:00 > 0:04:02LAUGHTER

0:04:02 > 0:04:05It's truly fantastic here.

0:04:05 > 0:04:07Kind of a little bit like I'm back in time.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10Like, seeing tractors on the roads with all the grapes on and,

0:04:10 > 0:04:13you know, understanding this part of the world.

0:04:13 > 0:04:14It's phenomenal.

0:04:24 > 0:04:29It's harvest time in Tuscany and on farms all across the region,

0:04:29 > 0:04:31grape picking is underway.

0:04:32 > 0:04:35Only days ago at La Banditaccia,

0:04:35 > 0:04:40Rob and the group harvested 20 rows of Merlot grapes.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43It didn't go that well, but it's kind of given us insight

0:04:43 > 0:04:48into the bigger picture and how much work is involved.

0:04:48 > 0:04:50It's backbreaking work.

0:04:50 > 0:04:56Now 55,000 square metres of Sangiovese vines are days away

0:04:56 > 0:05:00from being ready to harvest and owner Maurizio has entrusted

0:05:00 > 0:05:03the group to bring in the farm's largest crop.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28For former hotel manager Rob,

0:05:28 > 0:05:33taking charge of the grape harvest is a step closer to his dreams.

0:05:33 > 0:05:37To make your own wine and sell it and export it and be able to walk

0:05:37 > 0:05:41into a shop and go, "I made that." Like, how cool would that be?

0:05:41 > 0:05:43The thought of it just... It makes me really emotional.

0:05:43 > 0:05:47Like, you know, to be given this chance,

0:05:47 > 0:05:49why would you not give it a go?

0:06:05 > 0:06:09The farm's entire crop has been bought in advance by an

0:06:09 > 0:06:13award-winning winery, banking on making over 9,000 bottles

0:06:13 > 0:06:15from their investment.

0:06:15 > 0:06:19- Hi, guys.- Ciao. How are you? Ciao. - Yeah, I'm good. How are you?

0:06:19 > 0:06:20- Ciao.- Arrivederci.

0:06:22 > 0:06:24Ooh, this is very posh.

0:06:24 > 0:06:26Yeah.

0:06:26 > 0:06:29To ensure the grapes make a high-quality wine,

0:06:29 > 0:06:33they must be perfectly ripe at the moment of harvesting.

0:06:33 > 0:06:37Rob and Andy are visiting the winery to discuss the condition of the crop

0:06:37 > 0:06:40and learn about the craft of making wine.

0:06:40 > 0:06:4590% of the things we want to extract are in the skins.

0:06:45 > 0:06:47- Yes.- They are not in the fluids,

0:06:47 > 0:06:52and so you need to take the wine from the tap and pump it over,

0:06:52 > 0:06:59over the skins because otherwise it gets dry and it produces a cappello,

0:06:59 > 0:07:01like a hat, a hat of skins.

0:07:01 > 0:07:02- Crust on the top.- Yeah.

0:07:08 > 0:07:12I love the wine. I love Italian wine.

0:07:12 > 0:07:15I just want to immerse myself in the wine industry.

0:07:15 > 0:07:18As a younger guy, I didn't have a plan.

0:07:18 > 0:07:21Did warehouse work for a while and then I fell into sales.

0:07:21 > 0:07:25I was selling garden decking as a Saturday job, and I was good at it,

0:07:25 > 0:07:27and I thought, I could probably make a go of this and then I got

0:07:27 > 0:07:31into recruitment and from there more sales, telecoms,

0:07:31 > 0:07:32and then from there into hotels,

0:07:32 > 0:07:36hospitality and sort of got into wine, and something I was passionate

0:07:36 > 0:07:40about and I wanted to do. But Italian wine, it's the passion.

0:07:41 > 0:07:46This winery makes fine wines from grapes harvested all over Tuscany,

0:07:46 > 0:07:49including a Brunello di Montalcino,

0:07:49 > 0:07:53a red wine exclusive to this region and regarded as one of the best

0:07:53 > 0:07:55in the world.

0:07:55 > 0:07:57We noticed they harvest a lot by machine here, don't they?

0:07:57 > 0:08:00Is it all done by machine on this estate, or...?

0:08:00 > 0:08:03No, no. The brand-new machines are very good to harvest.

0:08:03 > 0:08:06- Yeah.- Because they are really delicate,

0:08:06 > 0:08:08but the hand is a different thing.

0:08:08 > 0:08:11If you harvest handily, you can choose.

0:08:11 > 0:08:12The machine can't choose.

0:08:12 > 0:08:15Well, like you said, cos we can pick the good and the...

0:08:15 > 0:08:17- Yeah.- This is good - this part is good, this part is not good.

0:08:17 > 0:08:20- Bunches, yeah.- With the scissors, you can just take the right part.

0:08:20 > 0:08:24It's a very good area, as I explained to you, because of the climate,

0:08:24 > 0:08:27because of the wind, because of the exposure.

0:08:27 > 0:08:31So it's one of the best soils you can find in Tuscany.

0:08:35 > 0:08:39What I've picked up, it's not just winemaking.

0:08:39 > 0:08:43Here, it's more than just a process, it's actually life.

0:08:46 > 0:08:48For me the ultimate thing would be to grow the grapes,

0:08:48 > 0:08:51harvest them and then do what we've seen today.

0:08:51 > 0:08:53The fact-finding for me was important.

0:08:53 > 0:08:56The weather's a big thing. I hadn't really thought about that when he said,

0:08:56 > 0:08:59"Look at the weather a couple of days before planning a harvesting."

0:08:59 > 0:09:01It needs to be dry.

0:09:01 > 0:09:02Then look at during the harvest.

0:09:02 > 0:09:05We need at least a good, you know, six or seven days, I think,

0:09:05 > 0:09:07of sunshine.

0:09:07 > 0:09:10- Lovely. Thank you very much again. - Thank you. Bye.

0:09:31 > 0:09:33Right, come on. No, you don't use your gloves,

0:09:33 > 0:09:36cos you're picking leaves, you don't need anything.

0:09:38 > 0:09:42The main task today is pick all the leaves off the Sangiovese

0:09:42 > 0:09:44because it's not maturing fast enough.

0:09:45 > 0:09:47Before harvesting commences,

0:09:47 > 0:09:52the farm's Sangiovese crop needs more time to fully ripen.

0:09:52 > 0:09:55If you think we're closing in on rainy season, you know,

0:09:55 > 0:09:56the last thing we want is to be thinking,

0:09:56 > 0:09:59"We've got to harvest these grapes" and it's raining every other day.

0:09:59 > 0:10:02So by picking these leaves off,

0:10:02 > 0:10:05you can see now the sun's getting to them all and it'll help them ripen

0:10:05 > 0:10:07a lot quicker. This is a prime example.

0:10:07 > 0:10:10So at the moment, the sun's hitting here and it's not getting to

0:10:10 > 0:10:14the grapes, so what we need to do is completely expose it.

0:10:14 > 0:10:17So it's about making sure these grapes can ripen at a faster rate.

0:10:17 > 0:10:20Ce voila. Now the sun is going straight onto the grapes,

0:10:20 > 0:10:23and that's what we need to do.

0:10:23 > 0:10:25So if we just take one each, yeah?

0:10:25 > 0:10:27So one on this side, one on that side, one on that side,

0:10:27 > 0:10:31one on that side and then we just work our way down.

0:10:31 > 0:10:34The stage I've hit in my life, I'm looking to build something.

0:10:34 > 0:10:37I'm looking to kind of almost leave my stamp on the world.

0:10:37 > 0:10:39It's not going to be a family cos I'm single at the moment,

0:10:39 > 0:10:41but mum and dad left me some money,

0:10:41 > 0:10:44so maybe I want to start my own business.

0:10:44 > 0:10:45Buy a house, build a house.

0:10:45 > 0:10:48You know, do something that I can say, you know, "I made this."

0:10:52 > 0:10:54Gavin, how come you're so fast?

0:10:54 > 0:10:56I can't do it slow, I've got to really rock on with it.

0:10:56 > 0:10:59- I don't know.- Remember, it's not a sprint, it's a marathon.

0:11:04 > 0:11:08The harvest isn't the only venture underway.

0:11:08 > 0:11:09- Done.- Thank you.

0:11:09 > 0:11:12Like many farms in Tuscany, La Banditaccia has

0:11:12 > 0:11:15agriturismo status, meaning it offers

0:11:15 > 0:11:17bed and breakfast accommodation.

0:11:17 > 0:11:20In peak season, the best agriturismos can earn

0:11:20 > 0:11:23over 100 euros per room, per night.

0:11:23 > 0:11:27I love, I just love getting my hands into something like this.

0:11:27 > 0:11:31Owner Maurizio has always hosted paying guests,

0:11:31 > 0:11:35but with the group occupying every room in the farmhouse, the plan

0:11:35 > 0:11:39is to convert the empty annexe into a brand-new guest room.

0:11:39 > 0:11:41Oh!

0:11:42 > 0:11:44Everyone has things that they're particularly interested in.

0:11:44 > 0:11:47The only thing I'm thinking about is the bed-and-breakfast.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50You know, this was something I wanted to do years and years ago

0:11:50 > 0:11:53and it's never left me and suddenly I've got to this point

0:11:53 > 0:11:55where I really want to do it.

0:11:57 > 0:11:59- Is that enough? - Yeah, that's perfect.

0:11:59 > 0:12:02And there's cobwebs on the back, masses of them.

0:12:02 > 0:12:04Eugh! Eugh!

0:12:04 > 0:12:06'There is no reason not to give it a go.'

0:12:06 > 0:12:09If it goes wrong, at least I've tried,

0:12:09 > 0:12:12and I think that's what you realise as you get older.

0:12:12 > 0:12:14You have to step out of your comfort zone sometimes,

0:12:14 > 0:12:17but I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work.

0:12:19 > 0:12:20It's the most beautiful place.

0:12:22 > 0:12:25Woo! This is the kind of thing I love to do.

0:12:25 > 0:12:27We're trying to whitewash the wall,

0:12:27 > 0:12:31but still retain the character, and as long as we can do that

0:12:31 > 0:12:34to the best quality that we can with what we've got,

0:12:34 > 0:12:38then we would be able to capture that luxurious sort of feel.

0:12:40 > 0:12:41Oh, it's fairly...

0:12:41 > 0:12:43Look at this, what do you think?

0:12:43 > 0:12:46I've never used such cheap paint.

0:12:46 > 0:12:48We'll have two-star paint and then five-star bedding,

0:12:48 > 0:12:53cos we've actually got some nice bedding.

0:12:53 > 0:12:56I really like the idea of turning this property

0:12:56 > 0:12:59into a bed-and-breakfast

0:12:59 > 0:13:04and actually have something tangible to show for this experience.

0:13:04 > 0:13:07I think when you start, just be as generous as possible,

0:13:07 > 0:13:09but move as fast as you can.

0:13:09 > 0:13:14I definitely know that I want to do something new at this stage in my life.

0:13:14 > 0:13:20I don't have a commitment that, you know,

0:13:20 > 0:13:22has me tied to London.

0:13:22 > 0:13:26So for me, this is one great option.

0:13:27 > 0:13:30With the first booking already taken,

0:13:30 > 0:13:35the group have agreed to charge 50 euros a night for the en-suite room.

0:13:35 > 0:13:38Lesley, you are honestly doing such a brilliant job.

0:13:38 > 0:13:41It looks fantastic. Really looks fantastic,

0:13:41 > 0:13:43and it's obvious that this is what you love doing at home.

0:13:43 > 0:13:45Well, my home's immaculate.

0:13:45 > 0:13:47I can tell. I can tell.

0:13:47 > 0:13:50We do have issues in here.

0:13:50 > 0:13:52When you come to the shower...

0:13:52 > 0:13:54OK. Right.

0:13:55 > 0:13:58Well, obviously, the hot water doesn't work.

0:13:58 > 0:14:00That goes without saying really, doesn't it?

0:14:00 > 0:14:02Oh, OK.

0:14:02 > 0:14:05But when you put the cold on,

0:14:05 > 0:14:08it actually turns the tap on over there.

0:14:08 > 0:14:10- How does that work? - Now I can't actually turn...

0:14:10 > 0:14:13- Now you can't actually turn it off? - ..either of them off! Oh, you've got off.

0:14:13 > 0:14:16Good, good. Let me see if I can get off as well.

0:14:18 > 0:14:21Unbelievable. That is amazing.

0:14:21 > 0:14:22Oh, my God!

0:14:24 > 0:14:26How are we going to call...

0:14:26 > 0:14:28an Italian number, OK?

0:14:28 > 0:14:31Because I don't claim to know everything.

0:14:31 > 0:14:34With the arrival of their first guests imminent,

0:14:34 > 0:14:38Tracy and Chi search for someone to help solve the broken bathroom.

0:14:38 > 0:14:42- I don't know if you just dial that...- I think so.

0:14:58 > 0:14:59It's Chi.

0:15:00 > 0:15:02'Chi is my favourite person here.

0:15:02 > 0:15:04'She's so funny.'

0:15:04 > 0:15:06We seem to bounce off one another.

0:15:06 > 0:15:10I don't know if this is a recording cos I have no idea how Italian phones work.

0:15:10 > 0:15:12It was telling you something before.

0:15:12 > 0:15:15I don't know Italian but he did say...

0:15:15 > 0:15:17"Zero, zero." So he's obviously saying,

0:15:17 > 0:15:21"To dial this number from that phone, you have to put 00..."

0:15:23 > 0:15:25- So listen again.- So you want me to just ring the number?

0:15:25 > 0:15:29- Ring again, yeah. - Don't look at me like that. You better know what you're doing.

0:15:29 > 0:15:32Ay-ay-ay.

0:15:32 > 0:15:33Right, listen. Listen.

0:15:37 > 0:15:39- Write it down.- What's "due"?

0:15:44 > 0:15:46It was definitely numbers she was giving us.

0:15:54 > 0:15:58So hot. You know, it's physical work as well in the sun and the heat,

0:15:58 > 0:16:00and none of us are used to it.

0:16:02 > 0:16:04It don't bother the dog, he loves it.

0:16:04 > 0:16:08He don't care what he does, as long as he's with me.

0:16:08 > 0:16:10And vice versa. Eh?

0:16:12 > 0:16:14It is almost midday.

0:16:14 > 0:16:19Rob and his team have been picking leaves off the vines for three hours.

0:16:19 > 0:16:2291, 92, 93...

0:16:22 > 0:16:24194 rows of Sangiovese.

0:16:24 > 0:16:26They only grow 25.

0:16:28 > 0:16:31That's... Yeah, astronomical amount of work.

0:16:32 > 0:16:34Was I on that one?

0:16:34 > 0:16:37I had to go back there and I've lost where I was.

0:16:37 > 0:16:39I think it was the next one.

0:16:41 > 0:16:47The vineyard is planted on 5.5 hectares of fertile Tuscan farmland,

0:16:47 > 0:16:51an area the equivalent size of seven football pitches.

0:16:52 > 0:16:54So much for...

0:16:54 > 0:16:57getting any sleep at night, I think it's going to be a few

0:16:57 > 0:16:59sleepless nights thinking about this.

0:17:03 > 0:17:06Do you know what's important to me about making it a success to live here?

0:17:07 > 0:17:10If I can take myself, mentally,

0:17:10 > 0:17:12to the place of having to go back to England,

0:17:12 > 0:17:15it actually makes me want to be sick.

0:17:15 > 0:17:18I'd feel like a failure.

0:17:18 > 0:17:20I've got nowhere to live, I don't have a job.

0:17:20 > 0:17:24But isn't that what this is all about?

0:17:24 > 0:17:27You don't get a do-over with life, you don't get another go.

0:17:27 > 0:17:28You don't live forever.

0:17:28 > 0:17:31Like, my mum was 57 when she died, that's...

0:17:31 > 0:17:34She'd barely lived half her life, you know.

0:17:34 > 0:17:37So I'm not afraid to give it a crack and see what happens.

0:17:47 > 0:17:51In some ways, it's dawning, it is coming home to roost that,

0:17:51 > 0:17:53hang on,

0:17:53 > 0:17:55we're responsible for a lot here.

0:17:55 > 0:17:57If we don't get the harvest in for Maurizio...

0:17:59 > 0:18:03..it's going to cause him a massive financial hardship.

0:18:06 > 0:18:09I was working on farms at 12.

0:18:09 > 0:18:13When we broke up from school, I was out working on the farms,

0:18:13 > 0:18:15doing the harvests.

0:18:15 > 0:18:20Starting at 7am, finishing at 9pm.

0:18:20 > 0:18:22I used to work side-by-side with my dad.

0:18:24 > 0:18:26It's coming back full circle.

0:18:26 > 0:18:29That's what I did when I was young and that's what I want to recapture.

0:18:34 > 0:18:36With the annexe bathroom out of action,

0:18:36 > 0:18:40Chi and Tracy are looking to reclaim a room originally used for

0:18:40 > 0:18:42bed and breakfast by Maurizio.

0:18:44 > 0:18:47Right, let's open this door now, cos I haven't even seen this.

0:18:47 > 0:18:51But it's currently occupied by harvest manager Rob.

0:18:51 > 0:18:53Oh, you're having a laugh.

0:18:53 > 0:18:56- What?- This is a suite, not a room.

0:18:56 > 0:18:58Oh, wow. Come and have a look in here.

0:18:58 > 0:19:01This is not even funny. This is our best option.

0:19:01 > 0:19:05Yeah, yeah. The problem with Rob is that his priorities were simply just

0:19:05 > 0:19:07the grapes, the wine and all of that.

0:19:07 > 0:19:10- Yeah, I get that. - So he's not really thinking...

0:19:10 > 0:19:12the same way that we are.

0:19:12 > 0:19:13At the end of the day, as far as I'm concerned,

0:19:13 > 0:19:16I came here for us to get something done.

0:19:16 > 0:19:19And I think, now that we have assessed this room,

0:19:19 > 0:19:22I think Rob would be 100% fine about moving out.

0:19:22 > 0:19:25Where he moves to, that's his prerogative.

0:19:25 > 0:19:29- Yeah.- Just do a clean sweep, measure up the mattresses...

0:19:29 > 0:19:31- It's quite easy. - Take some things out.- Yeah.

0:19:31 > 0:19:34Rob will be like, "What happened to all my things?"

0:19:57 > 0:19:59Right, there's a white pillowcase.

0:19:59 > 0:20:01Yep.

0:20:04 > 0:20:06Did you not know about your room?

0:20:06 > 0:20:07No.

0:20:09 > 0:20:11- Oh.- Ugh!

0:20:12 > 0:20:14The hits just keep on coming today, don't they?

0:20:16 > 0:20:17It's all right.

0:20:18 > 0:20:21The girls have kind of, like, stole his room and didn't tell him.

0:20:23 > 0:20:26- Oops.- I'm going in there for a shower in a minute,

0:20:26 > 0:20:27so you'll have to leave.

0:20:30 > 0:20:33That's what you want, you want to come home and find out you've got nowhere to sleep.

0:20:33 > 0:20:35Wasted my life...

0:20:41 > 0:20:42- Nice stew, love.- Good work.

0:20:42 > 0:20:45- Really nice.- Good.

0:20:45 > 0:20:47It's very, very good, to be honest.

0:20:47 > 0:20:49It's a bit made up.

0:20:49 > 0:20:52- What time is it now?- We actually get a bit of a lie in tomorrow,

0:20:52 > 0:20:54- don't we?- Yeah.- We're not starting till 9.30.

0:20:54 > 0:20:56- Wow.- Some of you are.

0:21:01 > 0:21:02CORK POPS

0:21:04 > 0:21:08Uncertain of where he'll stay tomorrow, for tonight,

0:21:08 > 0:21:11Rob remains in his old room.

0:21:11 > 0:21:15I know we've said all along, the B&B is not going to make us money.

0:21:15 > 0:21:17It's not. This is like a...

0:21:17 > 0:21:19Like another revenue stream.

0:21:19 > 0:21:22But you have to be ready for people to come and stay here.

0:21:22 > 0:21:26I don't want people to go, "Go and stay at this farm, it's like Fawlty Towers."

0:21:28 > 0:21:31- At this moment... - But it is called La Banditaccia,

0:21:31 > 0:21:34which is where the bandits hide, and that's what we'd be, bandits.

0:21:34 > 0:21:37- Come and stay...- Come and stay with a shower of bandits.

0:21:40 > 0:21:42- Hug time.- Hug time.

0:21:54 > 0:21:56Good morning. Did you want some breakfast?

0:21:56 > 0:21:59I've only had one cup of coffee and I can't actually think straight yet.

0:22:02 > 0:22:04Not in here. Outside. Come on.

0:22:04 > 0:22:06Not in here, take it outside.

0:22:06 > 0:22:09We're not having fighting in here, boys and girls.

0:22:09 > 0:22:10Yes. Go on.

0:22:10 > 0:22:14- Have you got a watch on, do you know what time it is?- No idea.- OK.

0:22:14 > 0:22:16So another busy day.

0:22:16 > 0:22:19You've got the B&B people to look after and...

0:22:19 > 0:22:21Yeah. I think it's better to be busy.

0:22:23 > 0:22:26With B&B guests due to arrive this morning,

0:22:26 > 0:22:31working out the farm's sleeping arrangements is top of the agenda.

0:22:31 > 0:22:33I think, in fairness to Rob,

0:22:33 > 0:22:36he is going to be doing a lot of work at the farm,

0:22:36 > 0:22:39so we need to strip my bed and change it,

0:22:39 > 0:22:41- cos Rob's going to have my room now.- OK.

0:22:41 > 0:22:45And that was my process as to what I want to do with that.

0:22:45 > 0:22:47No, it's not sweet, it's just sensible.

0:22:47 > 0:22:49I think he definitely deserves it.

0:22:51 > 0:22:53Tracy's quite kindly given up her room for me to move into,

0:22:53 > 0:22:58which is honestly probably one of the most lovely things anyone's done since I've been here.

0:22:58 > 0:23:02While Tracy takes up residency in the incomplete annexe...

0:23:02 > 0:23:04I have no hot water, I have no shower.

0:23:04 > 0:23:06So how are you going to go with no hot water?

0:23:06 > 0:23:09I'm just going to stink until somebody says, "You can use my shower."

0:23:09 > 0:23:12Any time. But not yet, until I've cleaned it.

0:23:12 > 0:23:14LAUGHTER

0:23:14 > 0:23:19..Jill is sprucing up the B&B room, ready for the imminent arrival.

0:23:19 > 0:23:22I think we've left it to the last minute, to be honest.

0:23:22 > 0:23:24I didn't realise how much work was to be done.

0:23:27 > 0:23:29See all these bins? We need a binman.

0:23:29 > 0:23:33Why didn't they take them this morning when they went out?

0:23:33 > 0:23:37To make matters worse, the driveway is full of clutter.

0:23:39 > 0:23:40All this stuff needs put back in the house.

0:23:40 > 0:23:43When these B&B guests arrive, they'll be seeing this stuff...

0:23:43 > 0:23:46That's what I'm saying. That's what I said, but it's...

0:23:46 > 0:23:49Old mattresses out there. What...? You know, you can imagine the first impression.

0:23:49 > 0:23:53You drive down the beautiful drive and the first thing you're going to see is Steptoe's yard.

0:23:55 > 0:23:59My part in the B&B is I'm going to be one of the people legally capable

0:23:59 > 0:24:01of preparing food. Other than that,

0:24:01 > 0:24:04I have no participation in the B&B at all, really.

0:24:06 > 0:24:09I'm trying to do like I saw in hotels I've been to abroad,

0:24:09 > 0:24:11where they always fold back the toilet roll.

0:24:11 > 0:24:13I think they're going to be quite blown away.

0:24:13 > 0:24:15I think it's going to be a bit of a wow factor.

0:24:15 > 0:24:18I've got to be honest, if I turned up to a B&B and it looked like this,

0:24:18 > 0:24:20I'd turn right round and go out of the gate again.

0:24:20 > 0:24:22There's a new bit there. I don't know why that is.

0:24:22 > 0:24:24'They're in the middle of Tuscany,

0:24:24 > 0:24:27'they're on a farm and they've got lovely people from Great Britain'

0:24:27 > 0:24:29there to be able to share their time with them.

0:24:29 > 0:24:33What we've got here is a semi-derelict farm with a bunch

0:24:33 > 0:24:37of people who are total amateurs. It's just a nonstarter.

0:24:37 > 0:24:39Give us a hoist with this, bud. At least it will look presentable.

0:24:39 > 0:24:41Uh-oh.

0:24:41 > 0:24:43GIGGLING

0:24:43 > 0:24:45We have no bed linen.

0:24:45 > 0:24:47This isn't going to work cos it's not a double.

0:24:47 > 0:24:50It's two singles put together, which means it's king-size

0:24:50 > 0:24:53and we can't find anything to fit it.

0:25:03 > 0:25:05I can't quite believe this is happening.

0:25:15 > 0:25:17Shit the bed.

0:25:17 > 0:25:20The guests are here and we've got stuff scattered all over the table.

0:25:20 > 0:25:22Let's pack everything in the fridge.

0:25:31 > 0:25:32Hello.

0:25:32 > 0:25:35- I'm Altaf, pleased to meet you. - Pleased to meet you.

0:25:35 > 0:25:38- You are?- Fabio.- Fabio, pleased to meet you, sir.

0:25:38 > 0:25:40- Welcome to our house. - Do you want to follow Altaf

0:25:40 > 0:25:42- and he'll take you through?- OK.

0:25:45 > 0:25:49- Absolutely breathtaking views here.- Wow.

0:25:49 > 0:25:50Make yourself at home.

0:25:50 > 0:25:52Indeed. OK.

0:25:52 > 0:25:53OK. Give us two minutes.

0:25:53 > 0:25:55OK. We will wait.

0:25:55 > 0:25:57Thank you.

0:26:00 > 0:26:02Karen, your guest has arrived, love.

0:26:10 > 0:26:12Karen.

0:26:12 > 0:26:14We just speak English, yes?

0:26:14 > 0:26:16The Italian is not good.

0:26:16 > 0:26:17One week here only.

0:26:17 > 0:26:19OK, OK.

0:26:19 > 0:26:22- Very good English. Thank you. - We try. We try.

0:26:22 > 0:26:25OK. So can I show you to your room?

0:26:25 > 0:26:26Would you like to see your room?

0:26:26 > 0:26:28OK. Would you like to come this way?

0:26:28 > 0:26:29Yeah, thank you.

0:26:32 > 0:26:34So come through.

0:26:34 > 0:26:37- Do you just want to walk through and have a look?- Oh, this is nice.

0:26:37 > 0:26:41Yes, really. Really comfortable, too.

0:26:43 > 0:26:46This is something I wanted to do years ago and it's never left me.

0:26:46 > 0:26:50Actually, to be in a position to do it is amazing.

0:26:50 > 0:26:52There's some towels in here for you.

0:26:52 > 0:26:54If you'd like to go by the pool there's some towels.

0:26:54 > 0:26:56My daughters don't need me any more.

0:26:56 > 0:26:58They're at university.

0:26:58 > 0:27:01So now I can give it a go and just see if it is what I want to do.

0:27:03 > 0:27:05Please come and find me if you want anything.

0:27:05 > 0:27:08- Yeah, yeah.- Or any questions.- OK. Thank you. Thank you very much.

0:27:08 > 0:27:09- Bye.- Bye.

0:27:14 > 0:27:17- There's loads of rocket. - That's not rocket. Rocket's...

0:27:21 > 0:27:23Oh, don't look.

0:27:24 > 0:27:26You dropped the lot.

0:27:28 > 0:27:30OK. So five-day forecast.

0:27:35 > 0:27:37It just makes me think of The Fast Show when you see this.

0:27:37 > 0:27:39This is just like... Sunshine.

0:27:41 > 0:27:45OK, so it looks like it's going to rain.

0:27:45 > 0:27:47Yeah, that's a bit of a bummer, really.

0:27:47 > 0:27:49That really is a bit of a bummer.

0:27:49 > 0:27:51For a successful harvest,

0:27:51 > 0:27:54Rob needs to find the balance between allowing the grapes time

0:27:54 > 0:27:57to fully ripen in the sun and picking them

0:27:57 > 0:28:00before the onset of bad weather.

0:28:00 > 0:28:01Seeing what it's like here, when it rains,

0:28:01 > 0:28:04it just honks it down and then stops.

0:28:04 > 0:28:06If it does that, there's going to be a lot of water on the ground.

0:28:06 > 0:28:09Then we need to think, there's got to be two dry days

0:28:09 > 0:28:11before we can start again.

0:28:11 > 0:28:15It's obviously coming in that way, it's coming south, the rain.

0:28:15 > 0:28:17It clears up again.

0:28:17 > 0:28:19It seems like it might just be showers.

0:28:19 > 0:28:22If we're lucky, it will kind of stay that side and not come down and get us.

0:28:24 > 0:28:26We might miss it.

0:28:26 > 0:28:27Hopefully we do.

0:28:57 > 0:29:02It's late morning and Dr Santini, the winery's grape expert,

0:29:02 > 0:29:04has arrived to meet Rob.

0:29:06 > 0:29:08- Good morning.- Good morning. How are you?- Fine, thanks, and you?

0:29:08 > 0:29:10Yeah, very well. Good to see you.

0:29:10 > 0:29:13So the grapes are OK.

0:29:13 > 0:29:15- OK.- The ripening is good.

0:29:15 > 0:29:19So we have very good, good quality of grapes...

0:29:19 > 0:29:22- Yeah, OK.- ..in order to produce a very good quality wine.

0:29:22 > 0:29:27- OK.- But actually, I have to tell you about the news, because...

0:29:27 > 0:29:29- OK.- The weather forecast says...

0:29:29 > 0:29:33- Rain on the weekend. - Yeah, not just rain, a storm.

0:29:33 > 0:29:36- Oh.- A very...hard rain.

0:29:36 > 0:29:37- OK.- At the weekend.- OK.

0:29:37 > 0:29:41So we have to harvest...

0:29:41 > 0:29:43before it rains.

0:29:43 > 0:29:46- That's a problem.- Yeah. Yeah. OK. So...

0:29:49 > 0:29:53So we have just three days to prepare and to harvest.

0:29:53 > 0:29:56So you said prepare and harvest?

0:29:56 > 0:29:57So today's going to be preparation.

0:29:57 > 0:29:59Getting the crates clean, getting them laid out.

0:29:59 > 0:30:01- Tomorrow, we will start.- Yeah.

0:30:01 > 0:30:04You have to hurry up, because we really don't have time.

0:30:04 > 0:30:08OK. So in realistic terms, we've got two days of picking, right?

0:30:08 > 0:30:14Yeah, because if we leave the grapes on the plant, the storm can destroy.

0:30:14 > 0:30:18- Yeah, I understand.- We have to harvest everything or we lose.

0:30:20 > 0:30:23I think the shock is that we've got to do it in two days.

0:30:23 > 0:30:24We need a week to do it.

0:30:24 > 0:30:27Unless they're going to floodlight the entire field, it's going to be

0:30:27 > 0:30:29a real stretch, a real stretch.

0:30:31 > 0:30:34But at the same time, we can't fail.

0:30:38 > 0:30:41Rob begins harvest preparations immediately

0:30:41 > 0:30:44and, with thousands of kilograms of grapes to be picked,

0:30:44 > 0:30:50a small mountain of crates need sterilising by ex-detective Andy.

0:30:50 > 0:30:51It might be a boring...

0:30:53 > 0:30:56..nothing job, but without this boring, nothing job,

0:30:56 > 0:30:57the big jobs can't be done.

0:31:00 > 0:31:03The gorgeous thing about this is, there's no trauma in this job.

0:31:05 > 0:31:07Nobody's going to die, or get lost, or...

0:31:08 > 0:31:09Out of this.

0:31:12 > 0:31:14I am proud of being a police officer.

0:31:15 > 0:31:17It's making a difference.

0:31:19 > 0:31:21When I was on the kidnap squad at Scotland Yard,

0:31:21 > 0:31:23you just can't pack up and go home

0:31:23 > 0:31:25because a hostage is still out there,

0:31:25 > 0:31:28therefore you don't go home until the hostage is rescued

0:31:28 > 0:31:30and the bad people are locked up.

0:31:30 > 0:31:34It was cops and robbers. I loved it. It was living.

0:31:35 > 0:31:39Unfortunately, for those who are at home, my wife at the time...

0:31:40 > 0:31:42..I guess I wasn't there.

0:31:46 > 0:31:50When I learned that we were breaking up,

0:31:50 > 0:31:54it was very painful and it really upset me.

0:31:58 > 0:32:00Yeah, talk about a dagger to the heart, but...

0:32:01 > 0:32:02..it was also...

0:32:04 > 0:32:06Yeah, painful.

0:32:06 > 0:32:09And does make you...

0:32:10 > 0:32:13..look at yourself and it

0:32:13 > 0:32:15did make me look at myself.

0:32:15 > 0:32:17But by that time, I was already...

0:32:18 > 0:32:21..single and living in my flat in Hemel Hempstead.

0:32:28 > 0:32:30Have I ever felt lonely?

0:32:30 > 0:32:32Sometimes, yes.

0:32:33 > 0:32:38Getting into bed at night on your own with nobody to cuddle,

0:32:38 > 0:32:40that's when I realise I'm missing out on things.

0:32:49 > 0:32:51Now, Leslie, did you order a mushroom?

0:32:51 > 0:32:53I did, yes.

0:32:53 > 0:32:55You can have that one.

0:32:55 > 0:32:57- A mushroom...- That's the bresaola one, isn't it?

0:32:57 > 0:33:00- Yeah, with the rocket. - Oh, a bit of chilli flakes.

0:33:02 > 0:33:05Over dinner, Rob briefs the rest of the group on his plans

0:33:05 > 0:33:06for the harvest.

0:33:07 > 0:33:10- We've got two days to do it. - Kicking off at...?

0:33:10 > 0:33:147am. Need to be there at, like, 6.50, 6.55.

0:33:14 > 0:33:17And it's going to be a bit of a mess.

0:33:17 > 0:33:21I really hope that Rob can control this.

0:33:21 > 0:33:24He's got to manage it. He's got to manage the people.

0:33:24 > 0:33:26Rob feels the pressure.

0:33:26 > 0:33:29It's not a laugh, it's serious work, it's hard work.

0:33:29 > 0:33:32It is worrying, because there's so much work.

0:33:32 > 0:33:33I honestly think...

0:33:35 > 0:33:38...there's more work than we can handle.

0:33:38 > 0:33:41We don't have experience in doing this.

0:33:41 > 0:33:43We don't have enough people to do this.

0:33:43 > 0:33:45We don't have enough time to do this.

0:33:45 > 0:33:47I haven't heard from Dr Santini.

0:33:47 > 0:33:50I need to chase him up and see if he can give us some people to help us out.

0:33:50 > 0:33:53But I know tomorrow everyone will get up at the crack of dawn

0:33:53 > 0:33:55and we will go and just work.

0:33:57 > 0:33:59I think it's quite a big deal for him.

0:33:59 > 0:34:03He does appear confident, but I think he's probably nervous.

0:34:05 > 0:34:08- Good night, guys. - Good night, everybody.

0:34:23 > 0:34:25- BANGING ON DOOR - Come on. Roberto.

0:34:25 > 0:34:27In the fields.

0:34:27 > 0:34:29Chi, see you in a minute.

0:34:29 > 0:34:32Come on, rise and shine!

0:34:32 > 0:34:35Do you feel like you're in shellshock about how much we're going to have to do?

0:34:35 > 0:34:38It has all come at once. It is like it's...

0:34:38 > 0:34:40Like, real work time.

0:34:40 > 0:34:43- Yeah.- And it's quite daunting, really.

0:34:48 > 0:34:51- Stand by.- Hold on!- Whoa, whoa. - I didn't realise it was on, sorry.

0:34:51 > 0:34:53- Bloody hell.- Sorry.

0:35:00 > 0:35:03With the storm set to arrive in 48 hours,

0:35:03 > 0:35:09the group and five farm hands begin the race to harvest 195 rows

0:35:09 > 0:35:10of grapes.

0:35:12 > 0:35:13It's nice to be out here.

0:35:13 > 0:35:15It's what we came for, lad.

0:35:15 > 0:35:18- Oh, yeah, yeah. - Less talking, more snipping.

0:35:24 > 0:35:28Rob and Gavin are working a line, Altaf and I are working a line,

0:35:28 > 0:35:30Karen and Jill are doing a line.

0:35:30 > 0:35:33Andy's washing the boxes and that's it.

0:35:33 > 0:35:35So there's the six of us up here.

0:35:35 > 0:35:40When the guests, kind of, have their rooms serviced at the B&B,

0:35:40 > 0:35:42then Tracy and Chi are going to come up and join us as well.

0:35:42 > 0:35:45So everybody here but Leslie today, so we'll have all hands to the pump.

0:35:45 > 0:35:47Buongiorno.

0:35:47 > 0:35:49Thank you. No problem.

0:35:49 > 0:35:51Would you like anything to drink?

0:35:51 > 0:35:52Some coffee, tea?

0:35:53 > 0:35:55We are fine.

0:35:55 > 0:35:58- Have a beautiful day. - Yes, you, too.- All right, then.

0:35:58 > 0:36:00- OK. Bye-bye.- Bye-bye.

0:36:05 > 0:36:07I'm enjoying it. It's out in the fresh air.

0:36:09 > 0:36:11Never thought I'd hear me say that.

0:36:11 > 0:36:14"Out the new fresh air, it's good."

0:36:14 > 0:36:15God, these are just perfect.

0:36:18 > 0:36:22You know, when you get one like that, that is just perfection.

0:36:23 > 0:36:25It's amazing.

0:36:25 > 0:36:27Are there empty crates down there?

0:36:28 > 0:36:31I'm going to go up to the top to get some.

0:36:31 > 0:36:34They've only got one, two, three more rows and they are out of baskets.

0:36:34 > 0:36:38So as soon as we run out of baskets, that's it, it's tools down.

0:36:39 > 0:36:41With clean crates running low,

0:36:41 > 0:36:43Andy's up against it, working on his own.

0:36:45 > 0:36:48I'm trying to wash as fast as I possibly can.

0:36:48 > 0:36:52Unfortunately, we seem to be light in numbers.

0:36:52 > 0:36:57I can understand Leslie is looking after the farm so my question is,

0:36:57 > 0:37:01what are the other two persons who are not here doing?

0:37:05 > 0:37:06Having a coffee break.

0:37:06 > 0:37:09I can't believe they are all up there like mad and we are down here,

0:37:09 > 0:37:11we've done nothing, really.

0:37:31 > 0:37:34So they've got two days to get the harvest in

0:37:34 > 0:37:37because it's got to be done before the weekend storms.

0:37:37 > 0:37:41So once we get that done... I'm sure one of those guys, if I said,

0:37:41 > 0:37:45"OK, let's do a sewing class," trust me, they would.

0:37:45 > 0:37:47- They would?- Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

0:37:47 > 0:37:49LAUGHTER

0:37:49 > 0:37:51Right, we'll catch up later.

0:37:57 > 0:37:59That's it. Oui, si, si.

0:38:01 > 0:38:04With the help of some local workers,

0:38:04 > 0:38:07Rob and Andy safely stow the fruit of the morning's labour

0:38:07 > 0:38:10into the cool of the cantina.

0:38:10 > 0:38:13It's just, get everyone out of the midday sun and get some chow

0:38:13 > 0:38:14and then we'll crack on again.

0:38:16 > 0:38:18Thank you so much for this, girls.

0:38:18 > 0:38:20- Good work.- Who made it?

0:38:20 > 0:38:21- Leslie.- Oh, bless her.

0:38:21 > 0:38:25- I tell you what, that's lovely soup, is that, beautiful.- Right, yeah.

0:38:25 > 0:38:27It's just like my mama used to make.

0:38:38 > 0:38:42This is very good, Leslie. Seriously, thank you so much, we really appreciate that. It's good.

0:38:48 > 0:38:51- I love that little kick in there as well.- It's lovely.- You like that?

0:38:51 > 0:38:55Good, well, I thought this is great stuff because it's full of all your

0:38:55 > 0:38:57proteins and your lentils and stuff.

0:38:57 > 0:39:00Plus, it's got the chilli which is also good for you, the heat, as well,

0:39:00 > 0:39:05because it actually helps your body to expel so it's really good stuff.

0:39:07 > 0:39:10- It's the first chance she's had to cook.- Do it again, soon.

0:39:10 > 0:39:12Who else is coming...?

0:39:12 > 0:39:15They are all up there, some of them took their own lunch up with them

0:39:15 > 0:39:18so they're sat in a dusty field eating a dry sandwich.

0:39:29 > 0:39:31That's a bit tough.

0:39:35 > 0:39:36We've got a lot left to do.

0:39:36 > 0:39:38When you sit down...

0:39:38 > 0:39:42- I'm not sure I want to get back up again.- Thinking about getting back up again.

0:39:42 > 0:39:45So what are you guys going to need us to do this afternoon?

0:39:45 > 0:39:47Come up and clear the weeds or what?

0:39:48 > 0:39:51We're just cutting grapes, all of us.

0:39:54 > 0:39:57It's one o'clock and in the vineyard,

0:39:57 > 0:40:04Rob has two new farm hands, Tracey and Chi, to bolster his workforce.

0:40:04 > 0:40:06So the plan of attack for this afternoon,

0:40:06 > 0:40:09is that somebody needs to stay up here with Andy and give him a hand.

0:40:09 > 0:40:12- Anyone want to volunteer?- We're in a race now, pressure's on.- Yes.

0:40:12 > 0:40:14When you say, "Stay up with Andy," to do what?

0:40:14 > 0:40:17- To wash the rest of the crates. - Basically, we've got that lot to wash.

0:40:17 > 0:40:20It's basically a race because they are picking them faster than I'm

0:40:20 > 0:40:22- washing them.- You probably need more than one person.

0:40:22 > 0:40:26Oh. Chi, did you want to help wash boxes or do you want to pick?

0:40:26 > 0:40:29I really don't care, I'm just here to help.

0:40:29 > 0:40:30Break the girls in easily.

0:40:30 > 0:40:34- Do we need to change this water now? - I'm just changing it now.

0:40:34 > 0:40:36So are we just tipping it over?

0:40:36 > 0:40:40If you can lift that, you're a stronger man than me, Gunga Din.

0:40:40 > 0:40:42- If we all go on one side, surely we can.- We can just tip it.

0:40:42 > 0:40:45- It's very heavy.- Let's have a go.

0:40:45 > 0:40:48Isn't that going to affect...? Make that whole grass...?

0:40:48 > 0:40:50- Yeah, don't worry. - Just do as you're told.

0:40:50 > 0:40:54- Ideally.- I'm sorry? Is this a serious conversation you are having?

0:40:54 > 0:40:57Yes, because what have you been doing all day?

0:40:57 > 0:40:59- Are you having a laugh? - No, I'm not having a laugh.

0:40:59 > 0:41:01Oh, OK. Shall we go down on a picket?

0:41:03 > 0:41:04- Are you having a laugh?- No, I'm not,

0:41:04 > 0:41:08I'm seriously asking you, what have you done all morning?

0:41:08 > 0:41:09- You want me to answer you? - I'm asking you.

0:41:09 > 0:41:11I'm not actually going to answer that.

0:41:11 > 0:41:14We have been working all day and what have you been doing?

0:41:14 > 0:41:18- Right.- It's a serious question, what have you been doing all morning?

0:41:18 > 0:41:20A very simple question.

0:41:20 > 0:41:22You will not get an answer from me if you even paid.

0:41:22 > 0:41:25No, because maybe you can't... Maybe you are too embarrassed to tell me.

0:41:25 > 0:41:26Embarrassed about what?

0:41:26 > 0:41:29I can't actually believe this is a serious conversation.

0:41:29 > 0:41:31You let me... I was hurt by...

0:41:31 > 0:41:33You let me... I'm not even having this stupid conversation.

0:41:33 > 0:41:36OK, you carry on, just go.

0:41:36 > 0:41:38Go and do some work.

0:41:38 > 0:41:40- Tell him to not talk to me.- Ssh.

0:41:40 > 0:41:43- Andy, Andy, Jesus Christ. - Criticising who?

0:41:43 > 0:41:45Hang on, hang on, hang on. Go get in the field. Leave it be,

0:41:45 > 0:41:47- I'll sort this.- No, no...- OK. - I'm not having this.- Come on.

0:41:47 > 0:41:49- But he...- Come on, girls.

0:41:52 > 0:41:54I knew we could tip it.

0:41:54 > 0:41:56- Yeah, yeah.- Get the hose and fill it up.

0:41:56 > 0:41:59- We're wasting time.- I'm not going to stand here and have to defend what I

0:41:59 > 0:42:03was doing. I came up here to work.

0:42:03 > 0:42:06And maybe Andy thinks I came up here to have a dance, I don't know.

0:42:08 > 0:42:12Where has she been? This is the most important day of this project.

0:42:12 > 0:42:16Priorities. The priority is the harvest.

0:42:16 > 0:42:18Hopefully, when things have settled down,

0:42:18 > 0:42:23I'm going to go and apologise because of possibly the way I spoke

0:42:23 > 0:42:25but not for what I actually asked.

0:42:26 > 0:42:29And how she takes that, that is entirely up to her.

0:42:35 > 0:42:38I need to start taking Valium or something, I think, to calm me down.

0:42:39 > 0:42:42With the storm due in just over 24 hours,

0:42:42 > 0:42:46the group can't afford to take any more breaks.

0:42:46 > 0:42:49It's actually so much harder than I imagined.

0:42:49 > 0:42:53Eight hours straight working in the fields in the sun.

0:42:55 > 0:42:58My feet are so hot, it's unbelievable.

0:42:58 > 0:43:00My back is killing me.

0:43:00 > 0:43:03Apart from that, it's another day in paradise(!)

0:43:09 > 0:43:12After ten hours toiling in the vineyard,

0:43:12 > 0:43:14Rob has called the group together.

0:43:15 > 0:43:17Well, we've done 45 rows today.

0:43:17 > 0:43:20- That's not bad.- Is that good? - Out of 195.

0:43:20 > 0:43:22LAUGHTER

0:43:22 > 0:43:23OK.

0:43:23 > 0:43:25Erm... Yeah.

0:43:28 > 0:43:30'It was pretty soul-destroying today.'

0:43:30 > 0:43:34If the storm hits and we haven't finished the harvest, the wine's knackered.

0:43:34 > 0:43:37You know, Dr Santini was here yesterday - I'll give him a call tonight,

0:43:37 > 0:43:40I'll see if he can call some of his guys and say,

0:43:40 > 0:43:43"Look, can you hustle any troops together?" Cos it's manpower

0:43:43 > 0:43:46and boxes, that's the only way you get through this.

0:43:46 > 0:43:48Thank you very much for today, people, it's been...

0:43:48 > 0:43:50- Interesting.- Horrific.

0:43:50 > 0:43:52- Yeah.- No, it hasn't.

0:43:52 > 0:43:54- It's not been that bad. - It's not been that bad.

0:43:54 > 0:43:56No.

0:43:57 > 0:44:00- You all right?- I'll get there, lad.

0:44:07 > 0:44:09OK. OK.

0:44:11 > 0:44:15The last job of the day is to pack up the winery's van and deliver

0:44:15 > 0:44:17the grapes to the press.

0:44:18 > 0:44:20Look at that, calluses.

0:44:20 > 0:44:23Real working man's hands.

0:44:23 > 0:44:25There is an amazing line in one of my favourite songs and it's about

0:44:25 > 0:44:29having hands like my father's and that's what I feel like -

0:44:29 > 0:44:30gnarly, old, calloused hands.

0:44:32 > 0:44:35Sitting in the field thinking about my dad,

0:44:35 > 0:44:37I realised how much like him I am.

0:44:40 > 0:44:44Dad was from a really poor home and for him, it was... He worked.

0:44:44 > 0:44:47We were growing up and he would work in the military and in the time off,

0:44:47 > 0:44:49he'd go and bale hay on the farm.

0:44:51 > 0:44:54Andy and I were chatting about our hands and...

0:44:56 > 0:44:59I've got old, calloused hands like my old man,

0:44:59 > 0:45:02from working in the field.

0:45:02 > 0:45:04Yeah.

0:45:04 > 0:45:08Don't know, there's just a lot of stuff reminded me of him.

0:45:08 > 0:45:10I miss... I obviously miss my mum but it's been a lot longer.

0:45:10 > 0:45:13Dad will be three years on the 5th of November.

0:45:15 > 0:45:18For him to see that I'm trying to make a change and do something else,

0:45:18 > 0:45:20would be important.

0:45:22 > 0:45:23Yeah, I miss him.

0:45:23 > 0:45:25He's my hero.

0:46:04 > 0:46:06Oh, dear, cheers, thanks, Leslie.

0:46:06 > 0:46:08Pleasure.

0:46:10 > 0:46:12Is anybody feeling as tired as me?

0:46:12 > 0:46:14- Much more.- More?

0:46:14 > 0:46:19- Much more.- I just feel like I could go like that.

0:46:19 > 0:46:21- Has Chi gone to bed as well? - No, she's in the kitchen.

0:46:21 > 0:46:24Is she? I couldn't see her.

0:46:24 > 0:46:27'I did get frustrated with Chi.'

0:46:27 > 0:46:31I didn't like it, cos that's not me.

0:46:33 > 0:46:35It's probably since I left the police that I'm trying to be

0:46:35 > 0:46:38less confrontational.

0:46:38 > 0:46:44Unfortunately, I maybe do explode and therefore that's what I find

0:46:44 > 0:46:48embarrassing about myself and what I should work on.

0:46:50 > 0:46:54Just two quick things - I want to thank you all for today.

0:46:54 > 0:46:58It's not easy terrain, it was hot and I know tomorrow's not going to

0:46:58 > 0:47:02be something to look forward to when you bounce out of bed in the morning all happy and joyful,

0:47:02 > 0:47:05but can we all be up there for 7am again, please?

0:47:05 > 0:47:07- Yeah.- Is that all right?

0:47:07 > 0:47:10It's literally just all hands to the pump, picking.

0:47:11 > 0:47:14- Can I go to bed now, please? - Yeah, as I say...

0:47:32 > 0:47:34Do you want breakfast now, or in a minute?

0:47:34 > 0:47:37- I just think we need to get going before it gets too hot.- Yeah.

0:47:38 > 0:47:41So maybe a coffee and then go.

0:47:41 > 0:47:43Yeah.

0:47:43 > 0:47:46It's 7am and under cloudy skies,

0:47:46 > 0:47:50nine of the group are back in the vineyard and ready for work.

0:47:52 > 0:47:54There's a lot to do today.

0:47:54 > 0:47:57We did 45 rows yesterday out of 194.

0:47:57 > 0:48:00It's almost a superhuman feat to try and do the rest of it today

0:48:00 > 0:48:04but we'll give it a fair old crack, that's what we'll do.

0:48:06 > 0:48:10Can you just work your way along to the very end and then head that way?

0:48:10 > 0:48:14I do feel responsible for the grape harvest and ensuring it works

0:48:14 > 0:48:16and ensuring we pull it off.

0:48:16 > 0:48:19Two girls I think are two rows ahead of you so then just hop like a row

0:48:19 > 0:48:22ahead of them and you just overlap each other all day.

0:48:22 > 0:48:26I don't want to be a... "I almost made a success of my life in Italy,

0:48:26 > 0:48:31"I almost took this opportunity and did everything I could to make it happen."

0:48:31 > 0:48:36Cos at the end of the day, when this all comes to an end and I've got nothing to go back to...

0:48:54 > 0:48:57Rob, the cavalry's here!

0:48:59 > 0:49:01Amazing, that's really going to help us out today.

0:49:01 > 0:49:03Guys, do you want to come with me?

0:49:03 > 0:49:05We'll go and find some rows to pick.

0:49:05 > 0:49:09Thanks a lot, guys, it's good to have you here today.

0:49:09 > 0:49:13Having only covered a quarter of the vineyard yesterday, this morning,

0:49:13 > 0:49:17ten extra workers have arrived to help Rob complete the harvest

0:49:17 > 0:49:20before the weather breaks.

0:49:20 > 0:49:22There's ten professional pickers, there's eight of us.

0:49:22 > 0:49:26They start at this end, they are going to work all the way around this side of the hill

0:49:26 > 0:49:28and then from there, we'll go,

0:49:28 > 0:49:31work our way along the bottom of the hill down to the bottom right-hand corner.

0:49:31 > 0:49:35And that's us done. Makes it sound so easy when you say it like that.

0:49:39 > 0:49:42These local workers - incredible.

0:49:42 > 0:49:45I thought we were moving on quite well but these...

0:49:46 > 0:49:49Swarmed over the top of me.

0:49:49 > 0:49:50Thank God!

0:50:17 > 0:50:21It's hot now, it's really hot, it's, like, 26 degrees.

0:50:21 > 0:50:24Everyone's been out since seven o'clock this morning so

0:50:24 > 0:50:26they haven't stopped all day.

0:50:26 > 0:50:31The strain of working 18 hours across 13 acres of vineyard...

0:50:31 > 0:50:34It's absolutely backbreaking work.

0:50:34 > 0:50:37..carrying crates weighing up to 20kg...

0:50:37 > 0:50:41Not a chance in hell would I ever want to buy a vineyard.

0:50:41 > 0:50:43..is starting to show.

0:50:43 > 0:50:44I don't see any romance in this now.

0:50:44 > 0:50:47- No.- I'm going to go round and make sure everything is OK,

0:50:47 > 0:50:49make sure everyone's got water.

0:50:49 > 0:50:51Make sure no-one's sitting down.

0:50:51 > 0:50:53Give them a last pump to the end.

0:50:55 > 0:50:57They are motoring.

0:50:59 > 0:51:02It's late afternoon and the storm is on the horizon.

0:51:03 > 0:51:06The guys that are coming up from the bottom of the field...

0:51:06 > 0:51:08- Yeah.- They are four rows away.

0:51:08 > 0:51:10- Really?- So this whole bottom field is going to be completed

0:51:10 > 0:51:12in the next half an hour.

0:51:15 > 0:51:17We are going to have this cracked.

0:51:29 > 0:51:31- Finito?- Si.- Oh, OK.- That's it.

0:51:34 > 0:51:35With the extra help,

0:51:35 > 0:51:40the group have completed the harvest and brought in enough grapes to make

0:51:40 > 0:51:42over 9,000 bottles of wine.

0:51:42 > 0:51:45From panicking and thinking we weren't going to do it,

0:51:45 > 0:51:48to hitting it with a load of people today,

0:51:48 > 0:51:52it's nice. It would be nice to have a couple of days of not thinking

0:51:52 > 0:51:55about grapes and harvesting and just, like, relaxing.

0:51:55 > 0:51:57That'll be good.

0:51:57 > 0:52:00I can't actually put one foot in front of the other very well.

0:52:03 > 0:52:06It's quite emotional, actually, cos when I finished, I thought,

0:52:06 > 0:52:10"Hmm, just a couple of swallows, just fight back the tears."

0:52:10 > 0:52:11I felt very proud.

0:52:16 > 0:52:18You can tell there is a bit of weight in the back.

0:52:18 > 0:52:20As the sun sets,

0:52:20 > 0:52:25Rob and Andy head to the winery to personally deliver the final batch

0:52:25 > 0:52:26of grapes.

0:52:26 > 0:52:29It's eight bottles to a 20 kilo crate, isn't it?

0:52:29 > 0:52:32So on here, we are virtually carrying...

0:52:32 > 0:52:34A good night out.

0:52:35 > 0:52:39I'm not going to bad-mouth the UK, but there's always been something

0:52:39 > 0:52:42in me, an itch in me, that knows I'm not meant to be there,

0:52:42 > 0:52:44I'm not meant to live there.

0:52:44 > 0:52:47I'm too good at this kind of lifestyle.

0:52:47 > 0:52:53So we must ask her if they can put x-amount aside for us.

0:52:53 > 0:52:57We're not going to see it for a couple of years. It's not going to be good for a couple of years.

0:52:57 > 0:53:00But, actually, it would be a reason for a wee get-together.

0:53:02 > 0:53:06I think you'll have to come out here and get together with me, though, cos I don't plan on going home.

0:53:09 > 0:53:13It would be amazing to buy a vineyard with a plot of land

0:53:13 > 0:53:15with a little house on it and just live off that.

0:53:19 > 0:53:21If you can pull out a pretty good harvest,

0:53:21 > 0:53:24you can survive off that for a little while and then you look at

0:53:24 > 0:53:27the other revenue streams - you go down from there.

0:53:27 > 0:53:33Their final resting place before they go off and make a nice bottle of Sangiovese.

0:53:33 > 0:53:36When I first came here, I wasn't really sure, but now,

0:53:36 > 0:53:38it seems like it would be good fun.

0:53:40 > 0:53:42- Do you want to shake or high-five? - High-five.

0:53:42 > 0:53:45Let's pretend we're young. Good work, man.

0:54:19 > 0:54:24As the storm arrives, the annual Cinigiano wine festival

0:54:24 > 0:54:26continues regardless.

0:54:26 > 0:54:30Local wineries open their cellar doors and welcome in

0:54:30 > 0:54:34weary grape pickers to enjoy a tipple of the latest vintage.

0:54:34 > 0:54:37- Christ, what's this? - Buonasera.- Buonasera.

0:54:37 > 0:54:39Are you buying, old man?

0:54:39 > 0:54:42I can imagine being sat in here with some friends on a Saturday night,

0:54:42 > 0:54:45drinking wine and talking shit.

0:54:45 > 0:54:47I could be happy here.

0:54:47 > 0:54:48This is really nice.

0:55:16 > 0:55:18It's Sunday morning

0:55:18 > 0:55:22and while some of the group sleep off a big night...

0:55:22 > 0:55:25- Oh!- Buongiorno.

0:55:25 > 0:55:27- Yay!- ..the bed and breakfast guests are up early,

0:55:27 > 0:55:29having reached the end of their stay.

0:55:29 > 0:55:32How was your stay? It would be lovely if you would come back.

0:55:32 > 0:55:34We might even be able to do you a deal on the room,

0:55:34 > 0:55:37being as you were such a good guest.

0:55:37 > 0:55:40- Thank you.- Lovely to meet you, I hope you have a good journey.

0:55:40 > 0:55:45- Goodbye.- Arrivederci. - Ciao.- Arrivederci.

0:55:45 > 0:55:48Full English breakfast, but as we can't get bacon,

0:55:48 > 0:55:50I'm going to use pancetta.

0:55:53 > 0:55:57I must admit, it's nice to have the harvest of the grapes behind us

0:55:57 > 0:56:00because it's taken a lot of pressure. I actually had a lie-in

0:56:00 > 0:56:04this morning, I got up at 8.30, which is...

0:56:04 > 0:56:07I tell you, you've no idea how welcome that was.

0:56:21 > 0:56:25With the harvest complete, the group take a well-earned break.

0:56:25 > 0:56:29They've returned to the town of Cinigiano for the main day of

0:56:29 > 0:56:33the Festa dell'Uva - the town's traditional wine festival.

0:56:33 > 0:56:35That's not bad, that's not bad.

0:56:35 > 0:56:37Go, quick, quick!

0:56:40 > 0:56:44The high point of the festival is a huge street parade.

0:56:47 > 0:56:52Taking part is an honour reserved for residents and, this year,

0:56:52 > 0:56:55there is a new addition among the ranks.

0:56:57 > 0:56:59Here's Rob in his tights.

0:56:59 > 0:57:01Where? Oh, there!

0:57:01 > 0:57:03LAUGHTER

0:57:04 > 0:57:06CHEERING

0:57:07 > 0:57:10You've got a ladder in your tights now!

0:57:10 > 0:57:12UPROARIOUS LAUGHTER

0:57:13 > 0:57:16I've said the wine is my focus and my challenge and something I want

0:57:16 > 0:57:18to do, so I think more and more,

0:57:18 > 0:57:21I'll be thinking of making plans of how I can pursue my passion

0:57:21 > 0:57:23and potentially my career out here.

0:57:25 > 0:57:29I feel totally better. I feel lighter,

0:57:29 > 0:57:32I'm now down to the last notch on my belt.

0:57:32 > 0:57:37Possibly being a farmer, living in Tuscany, is what I should be doing.

0:57:37 > 0:57:40I know he told me orange was his colour but I did not expect that.

0:57:40 > 0:57:42Not like that.

0:57:42 > 0:57:45Maybe I'm looking at things through rose-tinted spectacles but I think

0:57:45 > 0:57:49we actually bonded over the grape harvest because it was such a massive effort.

0:57:49 > 0:57:52We've all realised that we can work together

0:57:52 > 0:57:54and do something successfully.

0:57:55 > 0:57:59It's a nice sensation of everyone kind of feeling like they are part of one, big, happy family.

0:58:00 > 0:58:03However, it's a slightly dysfunctional family.

0:58:05 > 0:58:09Come with us to our ristorante.

0:58:09 > 0:58:12The group are under pressure on restaurant night,

0:58:12 > 0:58:14when they invite their first paying guests.

0:58:14 > 0:58:17I can't find the tagliatelle, where is it?

0:58:17 > 0:58:19I have no idea, doll. I don't know where you got it from.

0:58:19 > 0:58:21That's what I'm saying, somebody needs to find it.

0:58:21 > 0:58:23I have never worked so hard in my life.

0:58:23 > 0:58:26But the light at the end of the tunnel, which is not quite

0:58:26 > 0:58:28the oncoming train, but very close,

0:58:28 > 0:58:31is the fact that I've actually made the dessert.

0:58:31 > 0:58:34And the realities of farming hit home...

0:58:34 > 0:58:38Oh, look. This is the beginning of the attack.

0:58:38 > 0:58:43..when a potential fly attack blights the farm's valuable olive crop.

0:58:43 > 0:58:46Stavros was saying we've caught it early but we have to wait

0:58:46 > 0:58:48for the results to come back and take it from there.
