0:00:02 > 0:00:06'Every summer, thousands of young Brits travel to Magaluf in Majorca.

0:00:07 > 0:00:10'Not so much for the sun... but for what happens when the sun goes down.'

0:00:10 > 0:00:17This programme contains some strong language and some scenes which some viewers might find upsetting

0:00:17 > 0:00:19'I'm Stacey Dooley, and tonight,

0:00:19 > 0:00:21'I discover the darker side of this notoriously wild resort.'

0:00:29 > 0:00:33'I'm going to work with the people who deal with the chaos in Magaluf,

0:00:33 > 0:00:34'day in and day out.'

0:00:34 > 0:00:36Hello, you're talking to the police.

0:00:36 > 0:00:37Oh, nice, nice, nice!

0:00:37 > 0:00:38Eh, eh, eh, eh, eh! Eh!

0:00:42 > 0:00:43Gracias.

0:00:43 > 0:00:44'Through them,

0:00:44 > 0:00:48'can I uncover what's really going on in this party paradise?'

0:00:58 > 0:01:02But the atmosphere here is horrible, people are telling us to F off.

0:01:02 > 0:01:05'It's a story we've never seen before.'

0:01:05 > 0:01:10It's the volume that some people are consuming that is causing

0:01:10 > 0:01:11these deaths.

0:01:13 > 0:01:14'From the crime...

0:01:14 > 0:01:16You should be able to walk home without having

0:01:16 > 0:01:18everything stolen off you.

0:01:18 > 0:01:19Girls, come and speak to me!

0:01:19 > 0:01:21These girls have got free rein.

0:01:21 > 0:01:24They're going around mugging vulnerable people.

0:01:24 > 0:01:26'..To the tourists who don't make at home.'

0:01:32 > 0:01:35The rooms, the mess, the sperm on the windows.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38That's all grim, but actually, people are dying here.

0:01:47 > 0:01:48'A short hop on a plane,

0:01:48 > 0:01:52'Magaluf has become a go-to destination for young Brits.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56'You can do it on a budget,

0:01:56 > 0:02:00'it's hot and it's made for people who like to party.

0:02:00 > 0:02:01'So here I am. I've made it.

0:02:01 > 0:02:05'I'm in Magaluf on the Spanish island of Majorca.

0:02:05 > 0:02:09'I've decided to come here, like so many other British people do.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12'I think there's millions of holidaymakers every single year.'

0:02:12 > 0:02:16I can imagine my time spent here is going to be very different to

0:02:16 > 0:02:18that of the typical 25-year-old holidaymaker.

0:02:18 > 0:02:21I've come to see the other side of Magaluf.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24So what's it like to work here, to live here, day in, day out?

0:02:28 > 0:02:32'A mecca for first-time holidaymakers, stags and hens,

0:02:32 > 0:02:37'Magaluf now holds one of the worst reputations for binge drinking.'

0:02:37 > 0:02:39So far, I've just walked down the strip.

0:02:39 > 0:02:41There's a Union Jack flags everywhere.

0:02:41 > 0:02:44Everyone's boozed, everyone's eating pizzas and kebabs.

0:02:44 > 0:02:46It's like being down the wine bars in Luton.

0:02:48 > 0:02:49'Walking along the beach,

0:02:49 > 0:02:52'it's hard not to notice that the bars are already full.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55'Cheap alcohol is on offer everywhere,

0:02:55 > 0:02:58'and everyone looks like they're either nursing a hangover

0:02:58 > 0:03:00'or already completely trollied.'

0:03:01 > 0:03:05There's all-you-can-drink, there's sangria, beer. Get wrecked!

0:03:05 > 0:03:07I've just come off and I look like this!

0:03:07 > 0:03:09And how many hours were you on the booze cruise?

0:03:09 > 0:03:10Err... About...

0:03:12 > 0:03:14- About three hours!- About three hours?

0:03:14 > 0:03:17So you guys have been taking full advantage of the free bar?

0:03:17 > 0:03:18- Yes.- Yeah.

0:03:18 > 0:03:20All you can drink? Drink, drink, drink?

0:03:20 > 0:03:23The sun's out, your boobs have been out, your willy's out.

0:03:23 > 0:03:24You're on holiday!

0:03:24 > 0:03:27I mean, you literally couldn't script it here.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30You hear "Magaluf, Shagaluf."

0:03:30 > 0:03:34Everyone is on such a different level to anywhere else that I've

0:03:34 > 0:03:35ever experienced.

0:03:35 > 0:03:39And that's in the day! So you can imagine they're quite tame.

0:03:39 > 0:03:41You know, they're quite reserved in the day.

0:03:41 > 0:03:44Soon as the sun goes down, they all go out to play,

0:03:44 > 0:03:46and I just can't wait to see it for myself.

0:04:04 > 0:04:06So here I am.

0:04:06 > 0:04:09I'm in the main strip, Punta Ballena, as the locals call it.

0:04:09 > 0:04:11Other people call it Psycho Alley, I've been told.

0:04:13 > 0:04:17'With over 200 bars in Magaluf, competition is fierce.

0:04:17 > 0:04:21'Every bar employs a promoter to offer tourists on the street more

0:04:21 > 0:04:24'cheap, or even free, booze.

0:04:24 > 0:04:25'The deals are endless.'

0:04:25 > 0:04:28We can do discounts, we take people in for free,

0:04:28 > 0:04:31stags and hen groups, the stag or the hen will go in for free entry.

0:04:31 > 0:04:33And what about drinks and stuff like that? Is there a deal?

0:04:33 > 0:04:36It's a free bar all night till 6am in the morning.

0:04:43 > 0:04:45Talk me through this. What is this?

0:04:45 > 0:04:48- We asked for the strongest drink they had.- Orange!

0:04:48 > 0:04:51- That's a jug.- And that was that.

0:04:51 > 0:04:53- That's a jug, no?- That's a jug, yeah.- And what is it?

0:04:53 > 0:04:54What's it tastes like?

0:04:54 > 0:04:57It tastes like orange, but it's meant to have, like, vodka...

0:04:57 > 0:05:00- I think it's a Sex on the Beach. - Yeah.- They just throw everything in?

0:05:00 > 0:05:02And how much do you have to pay for drinks?

0:05:02 > 0:05:08On the strip, five euros for a shot, two drinks and a jug.

0:05:08 > 0:05:12'In order to compete with the bars, clubs in Magaluf charge a fee

0:05:12 > 0:05:15'at the door, entitling ticket holders to a free,

0:05:15 > 0:05:17'unlimited bar all night.

0:05:22 > 0:05:24'For the equivalent of £20-30,

0:05:24 > 0:05:28'people can drink as much as they want for up to eight hours.'

0:05:31 > 0:05:34Absolute carnage! Everyone's totally boozed.

0:05:34 > 0:05:36They leave their minds at home,

0:05:36 > 0:05:38they leave any common sense on the kitchen table.

0:05:38 > 0:05:41They come here and they just absolutely go for it.

0:05:41 > 0:05:43It's nearly twenty to five, and I'm off to bed.

0:05:43 > 0:05:44Grandma Dooley can't keep up!

0:05:44 > 0:05:47This lot are carrying on.

0:05:47 > 0:05:53Without question, tonight has shown me why people are drawn to Magaluf.

0:05:53 > 0:05:59ALL: Magaluf, Magaluf, Shagaluf, Shagaluf, Shagaluf, Shagaluf!

0:06:05 > 0:06:07'My first day in Magaluf was quite an eye-opener.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10'But from tonight, I start working in the resort.

0:06:10 > 0:06:15'My first job is right on the front line, in one of its bars.'

0:06:15 > 0:06:18You know what the thing I find really interesting about here?

0:06:18 > 0:06:22It's almost like a frantic panic. It's like a rush, like,

0:06:22 > 0:06:23"Aaaarghh!

0:06:23 > 0:06:27"I've got to drink as much drink as I possibly can because it's free."

0:06:27 > 0:06:32Whereas in Ibiza and other parts of Spain, everything's pricey.

0:06:32 > 0:06:34So you kind of pace yourself.

0:06:34 > 0:06:36It's a very different mentality here, and I think that's been

0:06:36 > 0:06:39created by the workers, the promoters,

0:06:39 > 0:06:42the bars, the club owners.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45And of course, we've come over here and reacted to it, you know.

0:06:45 > 0:06:46We lap it up.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51So I think I'll probably see more of that tonight.

0:06:58 > 0:06:59That's me, ready.

0:06:59 > 0:07:02The hair's out, the lippie's on, I've got me

0:07:02 > 0:07:04cut-offs on cos all the girls were wearing these yesterday.

0:07:04 > 0:07:07All Magalufed up!

0:07:07 > 0:07:11"35 euros, darling! Come on, come on! What you drinking?

0:07:11 > 0:07:14"Seven-and-a-half hours' free bar. Come in!"

0:07:14 > 0:07:15SHE LAUGHS

0:07:15 > 0:07:18That's what they do. I'm off. I'm off for work!

0:07:20 > 0:07:22'I'll be working in a bar that's part of a chain of clubs

0:07:22 > 0:07:24'on the strip.

0:07:24 > 0:07:26'My shift starts at 9.30

0:07:26 > 0:07:29'and finishes when the bar closes at 4am.'

0:07:29 > 0:07:31Damian normally uses number one.

0:07:31 > 0:07:33So if you use number two, that's up here.

0:07:33 > 0:07:37- Yeah?- OK. So tell me about the drinks, Helen.- OK.

0:07:38 > 0:07:42- Right. All your local mixers are here.- Is that the vodka?

0:07:42 > 0:07:44- Yes, this is our local vodka. - What is this? Is it Spanish?

0:07:44 > 0:07:47Yeah, it's our cheap vodka. Tastes really nice as well(!)

0:07:47 > 0:07:50- Gives you a sore throat!- Does it? - Yeah.- Gives you a sore throat?- Yup.

0:07:50 > 0:07:54- We don't have measures. It's just all free pour.- Are you joking?!- Nope!

0:07:54 > 0:07:56That's probably why they all get so drunk!

0:07:56 > 0:08:00'Free pouring in Magaluf means one drink here can equal two or

0:08:00 > 0:08:01'three back in the UK.

0:08:01 > 0:08:04'But for some, size is everything.'

0:08:04 > 0:08:06It's going to be...

0:08:06 > 0:08:07Have you opened the bar yet?

0:08:07 > 0:08:10..One of the biggest fish bowls I've ever seen!

0:08:12 > 0:08:15'This giant cocktail contains half a litre of vodka

0:08:15 > 0:08:17'and half a litre of schnapps.'

0:08:17 > 0:08:20- That's not enough, is it? - Keep going!- Keep going.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23I could never, ever, ever drink anything like this.

0:08:23 > 0:08:27- I'd be really, really poorly. Could you drink this?- No, never.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30- Tastes horrible.- How big are the groups that you sell these to?

0:08:30 > 0:08:34- At least four people.- Four people?

0:08:36 > 0:08:41'This fish bowl has enough alcohol to make 24 individual cocktails.'

0:08:41 > 0:08:45I actually feel quite irresponsible, giving them this.

0:08:45 > 0:08:48Let's put more straws in so they don't...

0:08:48 > 0:08:53The idea is tonight, that the people will pay 25 euros for a wristband.

0:08:53 > 0:08:56And that wristband means you're allowed to drink

0:08:56 > 0:08:59unlimited amounts of drink for seven-and-a-half hours.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02And there's separate bar crawls that are on a completely different

0:09:02 > 0:09:03pricing list.

0:09:03 > 0:09:06And they'll pay two euros per drink.

0:09:06 > 0:09:09But ultimately, the idea is it's all very, very cheap.

0:09:09 > 0:09:11And if it's not cheap, it's free.

0:09:11 > 0:09:14And that does make you wonder, "How are you able to run a business

0:09:14 > 0:09:16"when you're giving so much stuff away?"

0:09:27 > 0:09:31'Almost 100 people turn up on an organised bar crawl.

0:09:32 > 0:09:36'They've paid 30 euros each for five hours of drinking.

0:09:36 > 0:09:38'And with plenty of free shots along the way,

0:09:38 > 0:09:42'I was about to see first-hand just how crazy things could get.'

0:10:01 > 0:10:04'Part of the attraction of these regular bar crawls

0:10:04 > 0:10:07'are the sexually explicit drinking games they play

0:10:07 > 0:10:09'in each of the five bars they visit.'

0:10:18 > 0:10:21'I was really shocked when I discovered what these complete

0:10:21 > 0:10:24'strangers were just about to do to each other.'

0:11:05 > 0:11:08'I was stunned by what I'd seen, and wanted to talk to the two guys

0:11:08 > 0:11:11'who make their living running the bar crawl.'

0:11:11 > 0:11:13- Are you responsible? - Yeah, well, we are.

0:11:13 > 0:11:15If someone's too drunk, yeah, we look after them.

0:11:15 > 0:11:18As you've seen there, get them absolutely wasted at the strip,

0:11:18 > 0:11:20drop them off, take them to the club.

0:11:20 > 0:11:24I can't believe I've just seen two girls give two lads a blow job.

0:11:24 > 0:11:26- Does that happen all the time? - It's Magaluf.

0:11:26 > 0:11:29- You know the reputation, of course. - It happens every time.

0:11:29 > 0:11:33- We just encourage it.- So it's different rules out here?- Totally.

0:11:33 > 0:11:37- There aren't any rules.- You can't do things like that back home.

0:11:37 > 0:11:40Out here, everything's more lenient.

0:11:40 > 0:11:42So you can get away with stuff like this.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50The first reaction is to kill yourself laughing,

0:11:50 > 0:11:52and then you think, "That's someone's baby,

0:11:52 > 0:11:55"that's someone's sister.

0:11:55 > 0:11:58"How much has she had to drink? Is she wanting to do this?

0:11:58 > 0:11:59"Is she feeling pressured?"

0:12:03 > 0:12:06Just the amount of drink that is being thrown at some of these

0:12:06 > 0:12:09kids, and some of them are just 18.

0:12:09 > 0:12:13It's just endless. You can drink yourself into oblivion.

0:12:13 > 0:12:16I've not enjoyed it tonight. Last night was great fun.

0:12:18 > 0:12:21Tonight, it just feels a bit...

0:12:23 > 0:12:27..darker. It feels a bit more irresponsible.

0:12:29 > 0:12:34Perhaps Magaluf has taken it to a level that no-one else has.

0:12:45 > 0:12:48'After my night at work, I had some questions.

0:12:51 > 0:12:56'So I arranged to meet the general director of the bar, Alvaro Reyes.'

0:12:56 > 0:12:58Can you see the link

0:12:58 > 0:13:02between drinking for seven-and-a-half hours and problems?

0:13:02 > 0:13:04When they have the free bar all night,

0:13:04 > 0:13:06they don't have to rush drink.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09So what I'm going to do is drink it like normal because it go all night.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12But they don't drink like normal here, do they? That's the thing.

0:13:12 > 0:13:15- To be honest...- When I see them, it's like a panic.

0:13:15 > 0:13:18It's like a frenzy, like, "drink, drink, drink, drink, drink!"

0:13:18 > 0:13:20Wouldn't it be better for your business

0:13:20 > 0:13:22if you were able to charge a bit more?

0:13:22 > 0:13:24Maybe they wouldn't get as hammered

0:13:24 > 0:13:26and there wouldn't be as many problems.

0:13:26 > 0:13:28To be honest, the system works.

0:13:28 > 0:13:32And also, you must compete with all these all-inclusive hotels.

0:13:32 > 0:13:35While they let the people drinking and eating for free till 12,

0:13:35 > 0:13:39half past twelve, so you have to change, you know?

0:13:39 > 0:13:42'Alvaro says he's forced by the competition to offer a free bar,

0:13:42 > 0:13:44'but what really concerned me

0:13:44 > 0:13:48'were the sexually explicit drinking games happening in his bar.'

0:13:48 > 0:13:52I guess my question is, is that OK? Are you happy for that to go on?

0:13:52 > 0:13:55Nobody's forcing you to do silly things like that.

0:13:55 > 0:13:59- Are they encouraging you? - All depends on your behaviour.

0:13:59 > 0:14:02All depends what you're being teaching at home.

0:14:02 > 0:14:06I don't think any normal girl is going to do things like that.

0:14:06 > 0:14:10What about if she's been drinking for seven-and-a-half hours?

0:14:10 > 0:14:14If everything I do in my life wrong, the excuse is going to be,

0:14:14 > 0:14:17"I'm sorry because I was drunk"? And then?

0:14:17 > 0:14:19- That will be the answer for everything.- Yeah.

0:14:19 > 0:14:21"I'm sorry I was drunk."

0:14:22 > 0:14:25'From talking to Alvaro, it seems the cut-throat competition will

0:14:25 > 0:14:27'make it hard for anything to change.

0:14:29 > 0:14:33'But does more business for the bars mean trouble for everyone else?

0:14:42 > 0:14:46'It's Friday night in Magaluf, and the Punta Ballena is heaving.

0:14:47 > 0:14:48'On an average summer weekend,

0:14:48 > 0:14:53'this 800-metre strip has an estimated 20,000 tourists.

0:14:54 > 0:14:56'Mix with heat and excessive alcohol,

0:14:56 > 0:15:00'and you've got the potential for one dangerous cocktail.

0:15:01 > 0:15:05'Tonight, I will be going to work with the public ambulance service.'

0:15:05 > 0:15:09From May through till about October time, a lot of their time,

0:15:09 > 0:15:13a lot of their efforts and their resources, are spent in Magaluf.

0:15:13 > 0:15:16Now in the summer, they're having to hire extra staff, just to try

0:15:16 > 0:15:18and deal with the sheer volume of calls.

0:15:18 > 0:15:21So I'm going to meet a man called Manu and trying to understand what

0:15:21 > 0:15:24it's like working here on a typical summer night.

0:15:25 > 0:15:30- Hello!- Hello!- You Manu?- Yes. - I'm Stacey.- Hello.- Nice to meet you.

0:15:30 > 0:15:32Thank you for agreeing to have me.

0:15:32 > 0:15:35- Yeah, you're coming with me, you put this, all right?- I wear this?- Yes.

0:15:35 > 0:15:38'This year in Magaluf, the public ambulance service have seen

0:15:38 > 0:15:41'a disturbing increase in alcohol-related incidents.'

0:15:41 > 0:15:43Tell me what the

0:15:43 > 0:15:46typical things are that you'll get a call for on a summer night.

0:15:53 > 0:15:57'Manu tells me it's not just guys fighting that's on the increase.'

0:16:19 > 0:16:23'This year, Manu's also seen a rise in sexual abuse, especially rape.'

0:16:29 > 0:16:31- Really?- Yes.- Every summer...- Yes.

0:16:31 > 0:16:34- ..can be around 15 to 20 girls...- Yes.

0:16:34 > 0:16:36..who are calling and saying,

0:16:36 > 0:16:38"I've been raped. I need you to come and help me."

0:16:38 > 0:16:42Yes, this problem is more serious.

0:21:50 > 0:21:55'En route, Manu tells me about the increase in the number of calls he's attended this year

0:24:10 > 0:24:13No-one wants to talk about it, because you don't...

0:24:13 > 0:24:16want to dampen the mood, but that's what happens.

0:24:18 > 0:24:21Thousands of accidents happen on the streets of Magaluf,

0:25:37 > 0:25:39Some people are very aggressive...

0:25:39 > 0:25:43So, you know... And, as well, if they are drunk at the time, then...

0:25:44 > 0:25:47'With most guests not being early risers,

0:33:46 > 0:33:48There you go again, look.

0:33:48 > 0:33:50I mean, there's four people on that balcony now.

0:33:50 > 0:33:53They're on the exactly the same balcony that that young girl was

0:33:53 > 0:33:54when she fell off it.

0:33:54 > 0:33:58Alex is out having a fag, and he panics, you can see him panicking.

0:33:58 > 0:34:00He's been up to them twice already.

0:34:00 > 0:34:03And you can just so easily see how it can go from...

0:34:05 > 0:34:06..a wicked night to...

0:34:08 > 0:34:11..you know, a tragedy. It's just a slip, isn't it?

0:34:11 > 0:34:15It's just that one second. I mean, it's happened.

0:34:15 > 0:34:17That's not me stood here trying to be really dramatic

0:34:17 > 0:34:20and ruining everyone's holidays. It's happened.

0:34:20 > 0:34:22In that room, on that balcony, it's happened.

0:34:22 > 0:34:25It's happened this summer. It happened a couple of months ago.

0:34:25 > 0:34:28'Alex's job is hard, but he believes it's made even harder

0:34:28 > 0:34:30'when the guests drink to excess.'

0:34:30 > 0:34:32If you're drunk, it's OK. The problem is if you are too drunk.

0:34:32 > 0:34:35I think it's also because we have...

0:34:35 > 0:34:36really, really young people.

0:34:36 > 0:34:41Like from 18, 19 or 22, 23, and they love to drink.

0:34:41 > 0:34:44For example, they can be screaming in the rooms

0:34:44 > 0:34:46or throwing chairs from the balcony,

0:34:46 > 0:34:49and you have to go to the rooms, talk to them,

0:34:49 > 0:34:52and sometimes, they get really aggressive.

0:34:52 > 0:34:54Be honest with me, Alex. You can tell me the truth.

0:34:54 > 0:34:57Are you ever scared when you have to confront big lads,

0:34:57 > 0:35:00- four, five boys? - A lot of times.- Of course.

0:35:00 > 0:35:01Just a moment, sorry.

0:35:04 > 0:35:06- God, we can't let that go! - SHE LAUGHS

0:35:06 > 0:35:09We have to have our wits about us at all times!

0:35:11 > 0:35:14He's got an incredibly tough job.

0:35:14 > 0:35:18You know, when this hotel's in full swing, he's responsible...

0:35:19 > 0:35:20..for 100 people.

0:35:22 > 0:35:24Listen, please, can you keep it down?

0:35:24 > 0:35:28Please. People are complaining and everything, OK? Thank you.

0:35:29 > 0:35:30100 drunk people...

0:35:33 > 0:35:35..who are difficult to handle.

0:35:35 > 0:35:38I think it takes a certain type of person

0:35:38 > 0:35:41to work in this type of hotel in Magaluf.

0:35:41 > 0:35:42It's constant.

0:35:42 > 0:35:46It's a constant battle to try and keep everything...

0:35:47 > 0:35:49..ticking along nicely.

0:36:00 > 0:36:05'This year, over 200 tourists have suffered unnatural deaths in Majorca,

0:36:05 > 0:36:09'and I want to know how much of a part alcohol plays in the death toll.'

0:36:12 > 0:36:15I'm meeting local pathologist Javier Alarcon to find out more.

0:36:15 > 0:36:19- Hola, que tal? Como estas? - Hola, como estas?- Muy bien, tu?

0:36:20 > 0:36:24How many tourists have died

0:36:24 > 0:36:28because, you believe, they've drunk too much?

0:36:39 > 0:36:41Yo creo que si que tiene que cambiar...

0:36:41 > 0:36:45'In some autopsies, Javier tells me he's found people's alcohol levels

0:36:45 > 0:36:48'to be ten times over the Spanish limit.'

0:36:48 > 0:36:54It's the amount, it's the volume that some people are consuming

0:36:54 > 0:36:55that is causing...

0:36:56 > 0:36:57..these deaths?

0:37:00 > 0:37:04You know, you're dealing with 15, 16, 17-year-olds, sometimes.

0:37:04 > 0:37:06How does that make you feel?

0:37:18 > 0:37:23If excessive drinking wasn't popular in Magaluf, in Punta Ballena...

0:37:25 > 0:37:29..would you be dealing with less people?

0:37:35 > 0:37:37You think it will always exist?

0:37:58 > 0:37:59Umm...

0:38:00 > 0:38:03Yeah, a bit of a reality check in there.

0:38:03 > 0:38:06I guess Javier just confirmed, really,

0:38:06 > 0:38:10that it's the excessive drinking that's playing a massive part

0:38:10 > 0:38:13in the incidents that he's dealing with.

0:38:13 > 0:38:19He said 80 to 90% have got large volumes of alcohol in their system.

0:38:19 > 0:38:23You know, it's not necessarily the drink, it's not the place,

0:38:23 > 0:38:25it's the amount,

0:38:25 > 0:38:27it's the excessiveness that's causing problems.

0:38:27 > 0:38:31You know, he's completely impartial, and he himself says,

0:38:31 > 0:38:33"Yeah, things...things need to change."

0:38:40 > 0:38:43'I've seen the effect alcohol has on tourists,

0:38:43 > 0:38:47'but what effect does tourism have on the 4,500 residents

0:38:47 > 0:38:50'who live and work in Magaluf all year round?'

0:38:53 > 0:38:56'I've arranged to meet a local shop owner, Rene Nes.

0:38:56 > 0:39:00'She's been living on the Punta Ballena almost 40 years.'

0:39:00 > 0:39:04- Hola!- Buenas tardes.- Buena seres.

0:39:04 > 0:39:07- How are you?- Pleased to meet you. - Pleasure to meet you.

0:39:07 > 0:39:11- I hear that you have lived here for a very long time.- Mm-hmm.

0:39:11 > 0:39:14How has Magaluf changed, if it has?

0:39:14 > 0:39:15The people are different.

0:39:15 > 0:39:19We do want the families back, the families we used to have.

0:39:20 > 0:39:23Whereas now, the youngsters will come over,

0:39:23 > 0:39:27the only thing they like to do is drink, drink, drink, and be hooligans.

0:39:27 > 0:39:32Obviously, we always want tourism here, but we don't want THIS tourism.

0:39:32 > 0:39:36Tell me what it's like to live on Punta Ballena.

0:39:36 > 0:39:39Well, in the summer, it's a hell,

0:39:39 > 0:39:42and in the winter, it's paradise.

0:39:42 > 0:39:47People started feeling comfortable just using the street as toilets.

0:39:47 > 0:39:50Others will strip off completely

0:39:50 > 0:39:54and they will have sex in front of everybody.

0:39:54 > 0:39:55Where I live, there's a lot of kids,

0:39:55 > 0:40:00there's a lot of, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, 11-year-old kids,

0:40:00 > 0:40:02and they're not supposed to see that.

0:40:02 > 0:40:07To me, lately, Magaluf seems the place without a law.

0:40:09 > 0:40:13Rene goes on to say that the biggest worry for local residents

0:40:13 > 0:40:17is that this type of tourism is causing a new wave of street crime.

0:40:17 > 0:40:21The biggest problem is the prostitute on the street,

0:40:21 > 0:40:25and even people who live here are scared of them.

0:40:25 > 0:40:27The prostitutes are not prostitutes.

0:40:27 > 0:40:29They are thieves.

0:40:29 > 0:40:32- Are they prostitutes that steal, or...?- No, they are just thieves.

0:40:32 > 0:40:36- Pretending?- Yeah, they are pretending they are prostitutes,

0:40:36 > 0:40:38but they are just after the money.

0:40:38 > 0:40:41- So, the man thinks that he's going to get a service...?- Mm-hmm.

0:40:41 > 0:40:43..and then she'll take his things?

0:40:43 > 0:40:46Anything he has in his pocket goes. Mobile, anything.

0:40:46 > 0:40:50And have you seen this? You've seen this happen?

0:40:50 > 0:40:53- Yes. Too often.- Too often?- Too often.

0:40:53 > 0:40:55And everyone knows this is happening?

0:40:55 > 0:40:57Oh, yeah. Even the police and Guardia Civil.

0:40:57 > 0:41:01- This isn't just one prostitute...? - No, it's a bunch. It's a group.

0:41:01 > 0:41:03It's a known thing? A group?

0:41:03 > 0:41:06Yeah, 20, 30...

0:41:06 > 0:41:09I don't... I can't count them no more, there's too many.

0:41:09 > 0:41:12So, they're coming here solely...

0:41:14 > 0:41:16- ..to rob from drunk British tourists?- Yeah.

0:41:16 > 0:41:20- That's tourism.- That's tourism? - I suppose.

0:41:20 > 0:41:24'I wanted to see for myself how the prostitutes operated...'

0:41:28 > 0:41:32'..and it's not long after midnight that the women begin to appear.'

0:41:38 > 0:41:41There's been a couple of girls floating around

0:41:41 > 0:41:43for the past half an hour, an hour,

0:41:43 > 0:41:45and you can see, every time a drunk guy walks past,

0:41:45 > 0:41:48they're are kind of approaching him...

0:41:50 > 0:41:53'Local bar manager Daniel works close by

0:41:53 > 0:41:56'and sees this all the time.'

0:41:56 > 0:41:58Every night without fail, there's probably,

0:41:58 > 0:42:01I don't know, between 20 and 30...

0:42:01 > 0:42:04well, prostitutes/robbers, more like robbers...

0:42:04 > 0:42:05between here and there.

0:42:05 > 0:42:08Every drunk man that comes stumbling along,

0:42:08 > 0:42:10two or three of them straight round him,

0:42:10 > 0:42:13whether they proposition him to have sex or whatever,

0:42:13 > 0:42:15or they're just straight, hands in pockets...

0:42:15 > 0:42:17And has it got worse? Are there more muggings?

0:42:17 > 0:42:20Yeah, I think it has. I think there's got more and more girls.

0:42:20 > 0:42:23They are, like, tooled up and that. They cut people and stuff.

0:42:23 > 0:42:25They're not just... They're violent.

0:42:25 > 0:42:27You should be able to walk home safely

0:42:27 > 0:42:29without having everything stolen off you.

0:42:29 > 0:42:31There's the argument to be had though,

0:42:31 > 0:42:34if they didn't get SO drunk, they wouldn't be as vulnerable?

0:42:34 > 0:42:37In the UK, I can get plastered, fall asleep on a bench and wake up with everything.

0:42:37 > 0:42:39What you want to happen? What you hope...?

0:42:39 > 0:42:41What do you think needs to be done?

0:42:41 > 0:42:43It needs to be sorted out, just to make it safe.

0:42:43 > 0:42:47If I went and robbed someone, I'd get arrested for it.

0:42:47 > 0:42:50But they do it night in, night out, and get away with it.

0:42:52 > 0:42:56'Within minutes, I see the women picking out and following lone men.'

0:43:03 > 0:43:06'I can't believe it when I see one of the women

0:43:06 > 0:43:08'attempt to put her hand in a man's pocket.'

0:43:08 > 0:43:10It's so obvious! I mean, it's...it's...

0:43:12 > 0:43:14..it's blatantly obvious what they're doing.

0:43:14 > 0:43:17They don't even try and hide it, that's the mad thing.

0:43:17 > 0:43:18They do it in front of people.

0:43:19 > 0:43:23I'd be so surprised if I ever got one of them girls to speak to me.

0:43:23 > 0:43:26- SHE GASPS - She's pulling him!

0:43:26 > 0:43:27What's going on, girls?!

0:43:29 > 0:43:33We're just wondering why you keep chasing them guys?

0:43:33 > 0:43:34Girls, come and speak to me!

0:43:36 > 0:43:38Here we are.

0:43:38 > 0:43:39Girls, talk to me!

0:43:45 > 0:43:48Girls, come and have a chat with me!

0:43:48 > 0:43:49Girls, where are you going?

0:43:49 > 0:43:51Here we are, look.

0:43:51 > 0:43:52WOMAN CRIES OUT

0:43:53 > 0:43:57The two guys that work in the pub said to me,

0:43:57 > 0:43:59"Come out here, come and have a look at this..."

0:44:02 > 0:44:05..and I saw her pulling him, trying to get in his pockets.

0:44:05 > 0:44:07I saw it with my own eyes.

0:44:09 > 0:44:12'I hardly catch my breath when the girls are back.'

0:44:13 > 0:44:15It's almost laughable,

0:44:15 > 0:44:17but it does seem like these girls have got free rein.

0:44:17 > 0:44:20They're going around mugging vulnerable people,

0:44:20 > 0:44:22but it is a worry, it is a concern,

0:44:22 > 0:44:25especially when you've got 18-year-old lads coming out here.

0:44:25 > 0:44:28They're on their holidays, they're getting really boozed,

0:44:28 > 0:44:31they've fell away from the crowds... It's totally going on.

0:44:31 > 0:44:34It certainly makes you want to have a chat with the people up above,

0:44:34 > 0:44:37and see if, (a) they know about it

0:44:37 > 0:44:39and, (b) what they plan to do about it,

0:44:39 > 0:44:43because tourism is the most important thing on this island.

0:44:43 > 0:44:47So, surely, if you're happy enough to take all the tourists' money,

0:44:47 > 0:44:50you have to...you have to be looking after these people

0:44:50 > 0:44:53and making sure their safety is a priority

0:44:53 > 0:44:56when they're on your island, when they're in Magaluf.

0:44:59 > 0:45:03'I want to take this right to the top, but my first port of call

0:45:03 > 0:45:06'are the people whose job it is to protect and serve.'

0:45:07 > 0:45:10'I want to see how the local police cope with the violence

0:45:10 > 0:45:12'and the crime on Magaluf's streets.'

0:45:17 > 0:45:20'Tonight, I'll be working with two of Magaluf's finest,

0:45:20 > 0:45:22'Pablo and Cisco.'

0:45:22 > 0:45:25OK, so you've got your vest on, you got a gun there,

0:45:25 > 0:45:28- walkie-talkie, gloves...- Yes.

0:45:28 > 0:45:31- All this is for back-up... - Correct.- ..if necessary?- Yes.

0:45:32 > 0:45:34Punta Ballena, here we come!

0:45:34 > 0:45:36Out with the police...

0:45:41 > 0:45:44'The officers begin their nightly patrol of Magaluf.

0:45:44 > 0:45:48'In the summer, there are six cars patrolling the strip every night.

0:45:48 > 0:45:51'Each car deals with up to 40 calls.'

0:45:51 > 0:45:55- When you're all told, "Oh, you going to Punta Ballena tonight..."- Yes?

0:45:55 > 0:45:57..do you know that you're in for a busy night?

0:45:57 > 0:46:01- Yes, especially when it's weekend. - And weekends in summertime?

0:46:01 > 0:46:05- There is no weekend in summertime. Every day is a weekend.- Oh!

0:46:05 > 0:46:09Has there been an increase in alcohol-related incidents

0:46:09 > 0:46:10for you guys this year?

0:46:10 > 0:46:13Yes. Compared from other years.

0:46:13 > 0:46:16The actual incidents that you're getting called out for,

0:46:16 > 0:46:19because people have drunk too much alcohol, what are they?

0:46:19 > 0:46:23An increase of fights, especially when there is not many ladies.

0:46:24 > 0:46:26So, the guys are fighting, maybe.

0:46:26 > 0:46:29Don't ask me why, but they decide to fight.

0:46:29 > 0:46:32'They tell me, as the heat rises, so does the violence,

0:46:32 > 0:46:36'and they can deal with up to ten fights on a hot summer night.'

0:46:36 > 0:46:38How serious can the fights get?

0:46:38 > 0:46:41Sometimes only a punch or a hit, or something like this,

0:46:41 > 0:46:44- and sometimes with the bottles... - Drunk, knife...

0:46:44 > 0:46:47'For these police officers, violence is never far away,

0:46:47 > 0:46:50'as we're soon called to defuse a brawl at a bar.'

0:46:51 > 0:46:53Easy, easy, man. Easy, easy.

0:46:53 > 0:46:54Busted for no reason!

0:46:54 > 0:46:58INDISTINCT CHATTER, RADIO BEEPS

0:46:58 > 0:46:59One of them just smacked me,

0:46:59 > 0:47:01and then I had about 12 of them, like, fucking...

0:47:01 > 0:47:02RADIO CHATTER

0:47:02 > 0:47:06'The young man claims it was the bar staff who attacked him...'

0:47:06 > 0:47:07Hey!

0:47:09 > 0:47:11He's calling me!

0:47:11 > 0:47:15- Come with me. Come with me. - OK, I'm coming with you. What?

0:47:15 > 0:47:17'..but the bar's promoter has a different story.'

0:47:17 > 0:47:19I was having a drink in a bar...

0:47:20 > 0:47:24- ..and somebody threw an ashtray at somebody.- OK.

0:47:24 > 0:47:28'With no reliable witnesses, there's nothing more the police can do.'

0:47:28 > 0:47:31- So, there's two very different stories?- Two different stories.

0:47:31 > 0:47:33So, where... Where do you go from here? Do you...?

0:47:43 > 0:47:47'It's not just the Punta Ballena that keeps the police busy.'

0:47:47 > 0:47:50There is a person laying down on the beach, dressed,

0:47:50 > 0:47:52and it seems that he's unconscious.

0:47:52 > 0:47:56'At night, Magaluf's beach is a dark and dangerous place.'

0:47:56 > 0:47:58- Where is he, love?- Just over there.

0:47:58 > 0:48:02'This August in Magaluf, there were 300 reported robberies.'

0:48:08 > 0:48:10Mister? Mister?

0:48:10 > 0:48:13Hello, you're talking to the police.

0:48:13 > 0:48:15Do we think that he could have already been robbed?

0:48:15 > 0:48:18He has a wallet, and I think that nobody touched him.

0:48:18 > 0:48:21- Oh, that's good!- Nobody's stolen...has stolen anything.

0:48:21 > 0:48:23Mister! Are you OK? Are you fine?

0:48:23 > 0:48:25'Luckily, he's not been robbed,

0:48:25 > 0:48:27'but it's immediately obvious he HAS been drinking

0:48:27 > 0:48:29'and he's not out of danger.'

0:48:33 > 0:48:35The worry is how vulnerable he is.

0:48:35 > 0:48:38I mean, there's literally one, two, three of us stood around him,

0:48:38 > 0:48:41- and he has absolutely no idea that we're even here.- No, no, no.

0:48:41 > 0:48:44What could have happened, realistically?

0:48:48 > 0:48:51RADIO CHATTER

0:48:51 > 0:48:52Give me your name, please...

0:48:52 > 0:48:56- SLURRED:- J-O-N-A-T-H-A-N.

0:48:56 > 0:48:58- MOCKS ACCENT:- Junahata? That's not a name!

0:48:58 > 0:49:01Mister! Hey, Mister, we're the police!

0:49:01 > 0:49:04Oh, nice, nice, nice! Nice!

0:49:04 > 0:49:06Mister, Mister, be quiet. Police. Police.

0:49:06 > 0:49:08Which hotel do you stay?

0:49:08 > 0:49:10Do you remember where is your hotel?

0:49:10 > 0:49:12Je peux pas en anglais...

0:49:14 > 0:49:17Right, listen. The...

0:49:17 > 0:49:19OK, listen to me.

0:49:19 > 0:49:22What you're going to do now is go outside the beach.

0:49:22 > 0:49:24This boy is completely trollied. I mean...

0:49:24 > 0:49:28he's in no fit state to string a sentence together.

0:49:30 > 0:49:32Apartment?

0:49:32 > 0:49:33Umm...

0:49:33 > 0:49:35I'm sure when you sign up as a policeman,

0:49:35 > 0:49:37this isn't what you have in mind,

0:49:37 > 0:49:40trying to get boozed people to talk to you,

0:49:40 > 0:49:43because there's so many other things that need taking care of.

0:49:43 > 0:49:47'After half an hour, the young man gave the police his name and hotel,

0:49:47 > 0:49:51'but refused any further treatment and went on his way.'

0:49:54 > 0:49:55'Returning to the car,

0:49:55 > 0:49:59'Cisco points out some women he knows to be working as prostitutes.'

0:50:05 > 0:50:07Is prostitution illegal here?

0:50:10 > 0:50:15'They tell me that prostitution on the streets is not illegal.

0:50:15 > 0:50:18'Their concern, like many of the residents in Magaluf,

0:50:18 > 0:50:20'is the growing number of tourists

0:50:20 > 0:50:24'being propositioned by the prostitutes and then being robbed.'

0:50:24 > 0:50:27This is a new strategy of prostitution.

0:50:27 > 0:50:32Prostitution is shown as a hook to later on commit a further crime.

0:50:32 > 0:50:36- And that creates a new prototype of criminality.- Yeah.

0:50:36 > 0:50:39'It's hard for the police to arrest the women.

0:50:39 > 0:50:42'To do so, they need to catch them stealing,

0:50:42 > 0:50:45'get a positive ID from the victim, who's often drunk,

0:50:45 > 0:50:47'or catch them with stolen goods.'

0:50:49 > 0:50:54'Pablo and Cisco regularly patrol streets away from the strip,

0:50:54 > 0:50:56'knowing prostitutes get met by cars

0:50:56 > 0:50:59'which they use to hide anything they may have stolen from tourists.'

0:51:11 > 0:51:13I think they think he's their pimp,

0:51:13 > 0:51:17because she was stood at the corner of the road waiting for someone

0:51:17 > 0:51:21and now this guy has come down a dark road, away from the strip.

0:51:21 > 0:51:25Can you please back him up, to tell him where was the lady hidden?

0:51:25 > 0:51:26Yeah...

0:51:29 > 0:51:32So, you're suspicious because the lady was hiding from you?

0:51:32 > 0:51:36Yeah, totally. And this is the moment more important for us,

0:51:36 > 0:51:39because it's the moment that she has all the...

0:51:39 > 0:51:41If she's stolen something, she has it on her.

0:51:41 > 0:51:45'Pablo found nothing in the car, so the driver was free to go.'

0:51:48 > 0:51:52'As they searched the area for any suspected stolen goods,

0:51:52 > 0:51:55'I take the opportunity to speak to the prostitute.'

0:51:55 > 0:51:59What they are saying is that some of the prostitutes

0:51:59 > 0:52:01are stealing and robbing.

0:52:03 > 0:52:04I shouldn't believe them?

0:52:06 > 0:52:08I'm not suggesting it's you...

0:52:15 > 0:52:16'This summer,

0:52:16 > 0:52:21'the police have identified approximately 200 prostitutes,

0:52:21 > 0:52:24'many of whom they believe are stealing from tourists in Magaluf.'

0:52:27 > 0:52:31'Her documents reveal she HAS been in trouble with the police before,

0:52:31 > 0:52:33'and has a trial pending,

0:52:33 > 0:52:36'but on this occasion, there has been no evidence of robbery.'

0:52:36 > 0:52:40- Thank you.- Thank you for speaking to me.- OK.- Bye.

0:52:40 > 0:52:41'The woman is free to go.'

0:52:44 > 0:52:47- So, it's not been a quiet night? - No. It hasn't.

0:52:47 > 0:52:51- This is a normal night for you? - Yeah, it can be more.

0:52:51 > 0:52:52How do you do it?

0:52:52 > 0:52:56If you keep your mind to serve and protect, you'll have the solution.

0:52:58 > 0:53:01The guys were saying to me that things seem to be getting worse.

0:53:01 > 0:53:03They don't know what happened this summer,

0:53:03 > 0:53:06but for some reason, they were just...

0:53:06 > 0:53:07inundated with calls.

0:53:07 > 0:53:09It's just so, so busy this year.

0:53:09 > 0:53:12Way more than last year. Way more than previous years.

0:53:14 > 0:53:17If it continues...going that way,

0:53:17 > 0:53:20where are we going to be in two, three, four, five years?

0:53:20 > 0:53:22SIRENS WAIL

0:53:29 > 0:53:31'It's clear that most of the people I've met

0:53:31 > 0:53:35'who work and live in Magaluf are not only stretched,

0:53:35 > 0:53:38'but really worried about the rising problems.

0:53:38 > 0:53:41'And as more and more tourists visit the Punta Ballena,

0:53:41 > 0:53:43'they think it's only going to get worse.'

0:53:43 > 0:53:46THEY SHOUT AND CHANT

0:53:47 > 0:53:50'I want to find out what, or if anything,

0:53:50 > 0:53:53'is being done about these issues.

0:53:53 > 0:53:57'So, before I leave, I want to question the mayor, Manu Onieva.'

0:53:57 > 0:54:02Do you recognise the problems that come with Punta Ballena?

0:54:25 > 0:54:29I guess what I'm saying is, you are the mayor in charge of Magaluf,

0:54:29 > 0:54:34so it's your responsibility to focus on the issues that need addressing,

0:54:34 > 0:54:36and implement them changes.

0:54:36 > 0:54:40So, why do you think people are dying sometimes?

0:54:40 > 0:54:44Why do you think people are getting seriously, seriously injured?

0:54:44 > 0:54:45Some girls are getting raped.

0:54:45 > 0:54:48Why do you think these things are happening?

0:54:48 > 0:54:51Do you think it's the cheap alcohol? The free bars?

0:55:01 > 0:55:02What would you like to change,

0:55:02 > 0:55:05and when do you plan on making that happen?

0:55:13 > 0:55:17When might new laws be introduced that can make sure

0:55:17 > 0:55:19things like this aren't happening so often?

0:55:29 > 0:55:33I asked him three times what he thinks needs to change,

0:55:33 > 0:55:35and he accepted that things did need to change

0:55:35 > 0:55:38but he didn't tell me what they were,

0:55:38 > 0:55:42or when the changes would be put in place. So...

0:55:42 > 0:55:45Do I think if I come here next summer things will be the same?

0:55:45 > 0:55:49Yes. Do I think we're going to have the same problems? Yes.

0:55:49 > 0:55:53And, really, if I'm honest, honest, honest, I only think...

0:55:54 > 0:55:55..things will really change,

0:55:55 > 0:55:59and the change will be fast and the change will be drastic...

0:55:59 > 0:56:02when we stop coming here, because it's got...

0:56:02 > 0:56:05It's got to a point where we don't want to come here on holiday,

0:56:05 > 0:56:07and the money dries up. That's...

0:56:07 > 0:56:10That's when they'll be...

0:56:10 > 0:56:14eager and keen to make sure changes are put in place.
