0:19:29 > 0:19:33I still have my cup of coffee here.

0:19:33 > 0:19:37After all, I've got a couple of Norwegians over here, you see.

0:19:37 > 0:19:41Since I'm only half Norwegian, they only gave me half a cup.

0:19:41 > 0:19:43And I wanted to finish it off.

0:19:45 > 0:19:49Anyway, when you're out speaking as I have been, once in a while,

0:19:49 > 0:19:52a good cup of coffee sort of braces you up for the next meeting.

0:19:53 > 0:19:57Gentlemen, I am one of the candidates

0:19:57 > 0:20:01in your Wisconsin presidential primary race.

0:20:01 > 0:20:07We're going to have an election here, Tuesday April 5th,

0:20:07 > 0:20:13and this election is of course a very important one in terms of your state.

0:20:13 > 0:20:17Now, my friends, during my service to the United States Senate

0:20:17 > 0:20:19of 12 years,

0:20:19 > 0:20:23I have given more time, more attention,

0:20:23 > 0:20:26to matters of agriculture, than any other one subject.

0:20:29 > 0:20:34Senator Humphrey is not out here just to please you by these comments.

0:20:34 > 0:20:37I say that Wisconsin

0:20:37 > 0:20:43has lost hundreds of millions of dollars of sales.

0:20:43 > 0:20:45I say that the businessmen of Wisconsin

0:20:45 > 0:20:49have lost hundreds of millions of dollars worth of business

0:20:49 > 0:20:52because of reduced farm income.

0:20:52 > 0:20:55I charge here that not a single candidate in this primary election

0:20:55 > 0:20:57has paid any attention to the farmer at all,

0:20:57 > 0:20:59except Hubert Humphrey.

0:21:01 > 0:21:05And I make that statement without any boast or any claims.

0:21:05 > 0:21:08Instead of you reading about who you want to have as president

0:21:08 > 0:21:13in Life magazine, you want to take a good look at them in the flesh.

0:21:13 > 0:21:16You want to hear what they've got to say.

0:21:16 > 0:21:17Because let me tell you something,

0:21:17 > 0:21:19Life, Time, Fortune, Look and Newsweek

0:21:19 > 0:21:22don't give a hoot about your dairy prices.

0:21:23 > 0:21:25And I know. They laugh at you.

0:21:27 > 0:21:30I've been down to their editorial boards, some of them,

0:21:30 > 0:21:33and I'll tell you they have no more appreciation of a farmer's problem

0:21:33 > 0:21:38than they have of what's going on on the other side of the moon.

0:21:38 > 0:21:40Frankly, they don't know the difference

0:21:40 > 0:21:42between a corncob and a ukulele.

0:21:44 > 0:21:47I can tell you that my votes aren't very popular sometimes

0:21:47 > 0:21:49in New York City, or Boston,

0:21:51 > 0:21:53because back there, what they want,

0:21:53 > 0:21:59when I read the editorials, the Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe,

0:21:59 > 0:22:05New York Times, they want a price support programme that's lower.

0:22:05 > 0:22:08They say that the farmer is being subsidised,

0:22:08 > 0:22:11and they look at Hubert Humphrey's record, and they say,

0:22:11 > 0:22:14"This fellow, Humphrey, he's from the Midwest,

0:22:14 > 0:22:16"he's just for those farmers."

0:22:16 > 0:22:18That's what they say. They are right. I am.

0:22:19 > 0:22:21But I am not, if you please,

0:22:21 > 0:22:24for a farm programme that will destroy agriculture.

0:22:25 > 0:22:29I think Benson's farm programme is insane!

0:22:29 > 0:22:30And I'll guarantee you one thing,

0:22:30 > 0:22:33if I get to be president of the United States,

0:22:33 > 0:22:35I will buy that man a ticket personally

0:22:35 > 0:22:38and send him right back to Utah where he ought to live all the time.

0:22:38 > 0:22:40APPLAUSE

0:22:47 > 0:22:49Thank you very much for letting me speak to you,

0:22:49 > 0:22:51you've been a fine and a good audience.

0:22:51 > 0:22:52Good luck. Safe journey home.

0:22:52 > 0:22:55We're going onto La Crosse, and by the way, tune in tonight at 7.30.

0:22:55 > 0:22:58We're going to have another one of those television shows.

0:22:58 > 0:23:00And if you've got a question you want to ask,

0:23:00 > 0:23:03pick up the phone and call me collect.

0:23:03 > 0:23:05Just pick it up and say, "I want to talk to that fellow Humphrey

0:23:05 > 0:23:07"at the TV station at La Crosse."

0:23:07 > 0:23:11And put that call through and ask me on the air.

0:23:11 > 0:23:12You can make it tough, make it real tough,

0:23:12 > 0:23:14because people like it better that way.

0:23:14 > 0:23:16They like to see me squirm.

0:23:16 > 0:23:19You make it real tough and I'll try to give you a good answer.

0:23:19 > 0:23:21Thanks very, very much.

0:23:21 > 0:23:23APPLAUSE

0:23:31 > 0:23:34Yes, sir. Good to be with you.

0:23:37 > 0:23:41INDISTINCT CHATTER

0:23:50 > 0:23:52That reminds me,

0:23:52 > 0:23:55I got to get my coat out of the bags over there too.

0:23:55 > 0:23:58I don't want to put on the wrong coat.

0:23:58 > 0:23:59What you have to do tonight

0:23:59 > 0:24:02is to be sure to remind these people to call person to person.

0:24:02 > 0:24:05- Person to person.- Rather than the collect station to station,

0:24:05 > 0:24:08because we just get all these extra calls, isn't that the idea?

0:24:08 > 0:24:14All right. Well, I gave Norman... I gave Norm...

0:24:17 > 0:24:19On this chart...

0:24:19 > 0:24:23The way this thing works is the Lieutenant Governor says,

0:24:23 > 0:24:26"Well Senator, there's been quite a lot of talk about the record.

0:24:26 > 0:24:27"What's this all about?"

0:24:27 > 0:24:30Then I say something about that I've put my campaign on the basis

0:24:30 > 0:24:34of the public issues and the record, and I've been trying to emphasise

0:24:34 > 0:24:38some of the differences that exist between the Democratic candidates.

0:24:38 > 0:24:42- Here for example are some.- All right. Will this be early in the programme?

0:24:42 > 0:24:44Right in the beginning.

0:24:44 > 0:24:47And then you focus in, you phase right in on that,

0:24:47 > 0:24:49and then when I say, "All right, now we have a telephone,

0:24:49 > 0:24:52"now we have a call here," and at that point

0:24:52 > 0:24:53when they're saying now we have a call

0:24:53 > 0:24:56you get off that and get back onto me.

0:24:56 > 0:24:57You must end about one minute.

0:24:57 > 0:25:02Now, when it comes down...

0:25:26 > 0:25:28- We want to get on those questions. - All right.

0:25:28 > 0:25:30We want Muriel to have 30 seconds

0:26:22 > 0:26:24There are about six of us.

0:37:57 > 0:38:01MAN: I'm for Humphrey and that's who I voted for today.

0:38:01 > 0:38:03I believe in the man, I believe he's sincere,

0:38:03 > 0:38:05with his Civil Rights programme

0:38:05 > 0:38:10and his progressive instinct that I think that he has.

0:38:10 > 0:38:14I think it'd be a great thing for the country if he were President.

0:38:16 > 0:38:19'A factory gate. A few last handshakes.'

0:38:21 > 0:38:23Primaries are very risky.

0:38:23 > 0:38:26But my judgement is, I never could have been nominated

0:38:26 > 0:38:29if I hadn't run in primaries, so I'm taking the risk,

0:38:29 > 0:38:31but I would say you have to keep coming up sevens.

0:38:34 > 0:38:38- WOMAN:- I feel quite strongly on the religious angle of it.

0:38:40 > 0:38:44I probably would not vote for Kennedy, because of the fact

0:38:44 > 0:38:48that he would have an allegiance outside of the United States.

0:38:48 > 0:38:52There is no difference, either one. Humphrey or Kennedy, there's no difference.

0:38:52 > 0:38:55We were hoping for Mr Kennedy to win today.

0:38:55 > 0:38:58We're looking forward to a win in Wisconsin

0:38:58 > 0:39:01and that will carry him right on through into November.

0:39:02 > 0:39:03This will be the start.

0:39:03 > 0:39:06I feel I'm in favour of Kennedy very much.

0:39:08 > 0:39:09I think he's determined.

0:39:09 > 0:39:13My husband and I met him the other night down Wisconsin Avenue

0:39:13 > 0:39:16and I think he can give us what we need.

0:39:16 > 0:39:18And being that...

0:39:18 > 0:39:21I suppose I shouldn't say this, but being that he is a Catholic

0:39:21 > 0:39:24and we're Catholic also, I think that has a lot to do with it.

0:39:24 > 0:39:29I'm a pretty good judge of people, because I'm a cab driver.

0:39:29 > 0:39:33Well, Kennedy... is more for the upper class.

0:39:34 > 0:39:37I could say he's for the Eastern class.

0:39:37 > 0:39:39Like, I had Mrs Humphrey in the cab.

0:39:39 > 0:39:43The way she put herself to me was real nice.

0:39:43 > 0:39:46- MAN:- I was surprised the Catholic issue didn't come up earlier

0:39:46 > 0:39:49- than it did.- Bob Kennedy has stated,

0:39:49 > 0:39:54very emphatically, that he will not be dictated by Rome...

0:39:54 > 0:39:58- They shouldn't bring religion into politics.- Very correct.

0:39:58 > 0:39:59You think they have, though?

0:39:59 > 0:40:03I look at it this way, that if he is a God-fearing man,

0:40:03 > 0:40:07be it Catholic or Protestant or Jew, I respect him for it and I certainly

0:40:07 > 0:40:12would rather have a man that was a God-fearing man than one who isn't.

0:40:12 > 0:40:14WOMAN: I believe most people that are Republican

0:40:14 > 0:40:17will be voting for Humphrey.

0:40:17 > 0:40:21- WOMAN:- I think Humphrey sounded pretty good.

0:40:21 > 0:40:23I really do.

0:40:23 > 0:40:27Doing his chair and fighting for the working people all this time,

0:40:27 > 0:40:29and I think he's going to continue.

0:40:29 > 0:40:33- WOMAN:- He's younger, I don't think he's that good-looking,

0:40:33 > 0:40:36just because his sister is married to a movie star...

0:40:36 > 0:40:39- I don't think he's good-looking. - Doesn't make him a glamour puss.

0:40:39 > 0:40:42- I don't see what's good-looking about him.- No.

0:40:42 > 0:40:46He's just a glamour boy. Got a good head of hair on him.

0:40:46 > 0:40:49The Humphrey and Kennedy camps at this hour

0:40:49 > 0:40:50are almost identical.

0:40:50 > 0:40:53Each side says it will win in six of the ten districts.

0:40:53 > 0:40:56Each side it will win the popular vote,

0:40:56 > 0:40:59and each side says it will stage

0:41:31 > 0:41:34What did Nixon do in the Fourth and Fifth?

0:41:34 > 0:41:36In the Fourth and Fifth, give me Nixon.

0:41:55 > 0:41:58Pierre said it's not a correct quote.

0:41:58 > 0:41:59Now that is an exact quote.

0:41:59 > 0:42:04It just says I would find it difficult to be nominated.

0:42:04 > 0:42:07If I lost here, I'd find it extremely difficult to be nominated.

0:42:41 > 0:42:44'Kennedy, of course, is a Roman Catholic,

0:42:44 > 0:42:45'Humphrey is Congregationalist,

0:42:45 > 0:42:48'and Nixon a Quaker, and some observers think

0:42:48 > 0:42:51'that the election has resolved into a religious struggle.'

0:42:51 > 0:42:53Ignore that religious thing.

0:42:53 > 0:42:55Whatever, if it breaks you wider.

0:42:55 > 0:42:59See, it makes religion to be of disproportionate importance.

0:42:59 > 0:43:03It makes it a front page story when under ordinary conditions

0:43:03 > 0:43:06it wouldn't have been even printed in the paper.

0:43:06 > 0:43:09- Well, it's endemic. - It is. I see it every week.

0:43:09 > 0:43:12After all, Jack came out here.

0:44:03 > 0:44:04Yeah.

0:44:07 > 0:44:10All right. What's happened, of course,

0:44:10 > 0:44:13is that these Republicans are voting for maybe Nixon,

0:44:13 > 0:44:14voting from Humphrey, is that it?

0:44:21 > 0:44:23(Hi, Jerry! How are you?)

0:44:29 > 0:44:33It'd be all right if this was November you're going through this.

0:44:58 > 0:45:02Listen, don't let these guys get you congratulating too early.

0:45:02 > 0:45:04They run it, and then afterwards they say,

0:45:04 > 0:45:06"He thought he was in, but he wasn't."

0:45:06 > 0:45:08HE LAUGHS

0:45:08 > 0:45:09Do they do that?

0:45:09 > 0:45:12- I've seen this before. - They seem so friendly.

0:45:12 > 0:45:15They are, but they're... Copydesk boys are not always...

0:45:19 > 0:45:20They're all right.

0:45:20 > 0:45:22When I first ran for mayor,

0:45:22 > 0:45:24I was ahead till six o'clock in the morning.

0:45:26 > 0:45:28- RADIO:- 'Polls are now saying

0:45:28 > 0:45:31'that Humphrey possibly may carry five districts,

0:45:31 > 0:45:34'but it's now clear that the chances of a Kennedy sweep

0:45:34 > 0:45:36'have almost slipped away.

0:45:36 > 0:45:39'But it could be a long night for newspaper and radio men

0:45:39 > 0:45:40'covering the election,

0:45:40 > 0:45:43'and that one of the most elaborate and intense campaigns

0:45:43 > 0:45:47'in the state's history could wind up meaning almost nothing.'

0:45:47 > 0:45:50This guy. Yes, they...

0:46:28 > 0:46:30571.

0:46:30 > 0:46:35The worst we'll get...the worst we can get tonight is six to four

0:46:35 > 0:46:37with the popular vote,

0:46:37 > 0:46:40and that would end up with 20 and a half to 10 and a half,

0:46:40 > 0:46:43counting the National Committeeman for Humphrey

0:46:43 > 0:46:45and the National Committeewoman for Jack.

0:46:45 > 0:46:48So that actually the 20 and a half to 10 and a half

0:46:48 > 0:46:50would be a two to one victory to Jack on delegates.

0:46:50 > 0:46:53It would be a great victory, actually.

0:46:53 > 0:46:55The only ones who stood are the people who've been talking

0:46:55 > 0:46:57about Jack taking all 10.

0:46:57 > 0:47:01Which, er...is impossible at this point.

0:47:01 > 0:47:03I mean, here in Wisconsin.

0:48:24 > 0:48:26- RADIO:- 'Boy, what a thrill it is, what excitement,

0:48:26 > 0:48:29'watching these important races tonight.

0:48:32 > 0:48:35'I will mention that some other very exciting things are happening

0:48:35 > 0:48:37'right here in our city these days.'

0:48:37 > 0:48:40Kennedy first. The senator will come over here.

0:48:55 > 0:48:57it's a very interesting evening.

0:48:57 > 0:49:00How has the vote as it's been thus far shaped up

0:49:00 > 0:49:02according to your expectations?

0:49:02 > 0:49:04Well, I was hopeful we could take six districts,

0:49:04 > 0:49:07and I think we have a good chance to do that, which would give us,

0:49:07 > 0:49:10and I hope, the majority of the popular vote,

0:49:10 > 0:49:12which would give us a very good result.

0:49:12 > 0:49:15Senator, how do you feel after this exhaustive campaign?

0:49:15 > 0:49:19I've campaigned many months, but I think if we're successful,

0:49:19 > 0:49:22I've run against a very hard-working, formidable opponent,

0:49:22 > 0:49:25my colleague and friend Senator Humphrey,

0:49:25 > 0:49:28and if I can be successful against him I'll be delighted,

0:49:28 > 0:49:30particularly in Wisconsin, which is, of course,

0:49:30 > 0:49:32the heart of the Midwest next to Minnesota.

0:49:32 > 0:49:35So we've had a very long, gruelling campaign.

0:49:35 > 0:49:39- What are your plans after tonight? - Well, to continue on.

0:49:39 > 0:49:41The next primary, of course, is Indiana

0:49:41 > 0:49:45and the first part of Maine, then I hit West Virginia, Maryland

0:49:45 > 0:49:48and Oregon and Nebraska, all in the short space of two and a half weeks.

0:49:48 > 0:49:51Very typical of the whole thing. It makes good.

0:49:51 > 0:49:53Smile here.

0:49:53 > 0:49:56If you wait a little while, I may smile even more!

0:50:22 > 0:50:25How are you going to come out of this election?
