0:01:03 > 0:01:04No way!
0:01:13 > 0:01:17All over Britain, nearly 100,000 goats are now farmed.
0:01:24 > 0:01:26Are you coming?
0:01:26 > 0:01:29Despite being domesticated 10,000 years ago,
0:01:29 > 0:01:33they have taken their time to become popular in this country.
0:01:33 > 0:01:36But that moment has arrived.
0:01:36 > 0:01:38You're going to get a shock tomorrow when you go to the show.
0:01:38 > 0:01:41Today, we are meeting two of the many farmers who have started
0:01:41 > 0:01:43breeding these cheeky animals.
0:01:44 > 0:01:46Betty Judge
0:01:46 > 0:01:50and Laura Ketley are both passionate about their goats,
0:01:50 > 0:01:54and they're heading to this year's Moreton-in-Marsh show,
0:01:54 > 0:01:59to try to win coveted red rosettes and prove they are top breeders.
0:01:59 > 0:02:02I'm over the moon. It's worth getting up for.
0:02:11 > 0:02:14Faringdon, a market town in Oxfordshire,
0:02:14 > 0:02:18is home to specialist breeders Betty and Stewart Judge.
0:02:18 > 0:02:20Here, on an 11-acre farm,
0:02:20 > 0:02:22they raise an array of animals
0:02:22 > 0:02:25which they sell in the UK and internationally.
0:02:27 > 0:02:29I've always been obsessional, I think.
0:02:29 > 0:02:33My family have always said "Betty could never have one".
0:02:33 > 0:02:35Well, I think it is a good obsession, actually.
0:02:38 > 0:02:40This is Opal
0:02:40 > 0:02:43and this is Halo.
0:02:43 > 0:02:45That is Snazzy.
0:02:45 > 0:02:47Maize is the light-coloured one.
0:02:50 > 0:02:53Betty and Stewart bought the farm in 1976,
0:02:53 > 0:02:56and have built it up into a successful breeding business.
0:02:58 > 0:03:04I've got 13 sheep and 28 pygmy goats.
0:03:05 > 0:03:07And nine kunekune pigs.
0:03:08 > 0:03:11I have to keep remembering!
0:03:11 > 0:03:13And of course, their pet cat Lola.
0:03:13 > 0:03:16If you want to feed the others, I will put Lee-Lee away.
0:03:16 > 0:03:18Come on, Lee-Lee.
0:03:18 > 0:03:21Soon to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary,
0:03:21 > 0:03:24Betty and Stewart work like a well-oiled machine.
0:03:24 > 0:03:27But there is no doubt who is in the driving seat.
0:03:28 > 0:03:32I do the overall management of the place.
0:03:32 > 0:03:37We have a chart in the kennels so that we know exactly which animals
0:03:37 > 0:03:40are where. Even the field is accounted for.
0:03:40 > 0:03:41He is my foreman.
0:03:42 > 0:03:44- You are looking well.- Small...
0:03:44 > 0:03:46Yes, we'll go and do those now. Yes, yes.
0:03:46 > 0:03:49Neither of us would be without each other.
0:03:49 > 0:03:53I think, you know, we do have our differences and different ideas,
0:03:53 > 0:03:54as you should have.
0:03:54 > 0:03:59But, you know, basically we are on the same line,
0:03:59 > 0:04:03that the animals have got to be looked after to the best of our ability.
0:04:09 > 0:04:13- Come on then.- Come on, babies. The dish is out. That's good.
0:04:13 > 0:04:15That is easier.
0:04:15 > 0:04:16Little Snowy.
0:04:18 > 0:04:21Don't spill so much on the floor.
0:04:21 > 0:04:22- Do you want to do it?- No.
0:04:23 > 0:04:26Goats have been a late addition to this farm.
0:04:26 > 0:04:33It was only in 2011 that Betty and Stewart started their first herd.
0:04:33 > 0:04:36It was a way to overcome a devastating family tragedy.
0:04:37 > 0:04:40They lost their 19-year-old son, Richard,
0:04:40 > 0:04:42when he suffered a fatal heart attack.
0:04:45 > 0:04:49That was a huge, huge blow to anybody.
0:04:50 > 0:04:56While it was crushing to them both, Stewart took it particularly hard.
0:04:56 > 0:05:00Since then, he's had one or two bouts of depression, since then.
0:05:00 > 0:05:07And then it culminated in this really, really bad one in 2011.
0:05:07 > 0:05:10And, as I say, he was...
0:05:12 > 0:05:13..seriously ill and...
0:05:15 > 0:05:17..he was for some time.
0:05:17 > 0:05:24But eventually, he came home and we started about building a new...
0:05:24 > 0:05:27..interest and reason to live.
0:05:34 > 0:05:36Without a doubt, they are really good therapy.
0:05:36 > 0:05:41The animals were a method of giving him something to get out of bed in
0:05:41 > 0:05:44the morning and out of the chair, and help me with.
0:05:46 > 0:05:48I think he enjoys the animals as much as I do.
0:05:48 > 0:05:50Tremendously. I love them all.
0:05:50 > 0:05:53They are great fun.
0:05:53 > 0:05:55And they give me something to do.
0:05:55 > 0:05:58He used to help me feed them with the bottles.
0:05:58 > 0:06:00They were in the new dining room in a pen.
0:06:00 > 0:06:03And... I mean, he was so protective of them.
0:06:03 > 0:06:06These pygmy goats haven't just brought joy to this couple.
0:06:08 > 0:06:09I adore them all.
0:06:09 > 0:06:13But one or two make special marks in your heart.
0:06:13 > 0:06:17As an average height of 20 inches, their cute factor,
0:06:17 > 0:06:20along with their ability to adapt to all climates,
0:06:20 > 0:06:26have made them extremely popular as pets, as well as livestock.
0:06:26 > 0:06:28They are little sweethearts, aren't you?
0:06:30 > 0:06:33They are so rewarding because they give you so much.
0:06:35 > 0:06:38I wouldn't be without them. I don't know what I would go without my animals.
0:06:38 > 0:06:43I'm not sort of a person that goes on holidays or goes shopping -
0:06:43 > 0:06:44only for animals!
0:06:45 > 0:06:49Or anything else, you know, I'm absolutely... Adore them.
0:07:03 > 0:07:05Just 60 miles north is Warwickshire,
0:07:05 > 0:07:07home to the Ketley family.
0:07:10 > 0:07:12Laura lives with her mother Vicky,
0:07:12 > 0:07:16and grandparents Shirley and Steve on their 22 acres.
0:07:20 > 0:07:22Come and then, girls. Everyone calls me the crazy goat lady.
0:07:24 > 0:07:26And that's, like, how I'm known.
0:07:26 > 0:07:28And well, I don't think I'll ever live it down.
0:07:28 > 0:07:33But no, I don't mind, but it is slightly unusual and I don't...
0:07:33 > 0:07:37Before I started doing this, I didn't know anyone else that, you know,
0:07:37 > 0:07:40had goats at the age of 20 and loved it as much as I do.
0:07:40 > 0:07:43Only two years out of agricultural college,
0:07:43 > 0:07:47Laura's building a herd of Toggenburg dairy goats.
0:07:47 > 0:07:51When you spend so much time with them and you milk than twice a day
0:07:51 > 0:07:53and...you do just build up some kind of bond,
0:07:53 > 0:07:55especially with the ones that you milk.
0:07:57 > 0:08:00It's just... You bond every day
0:08:00 > 0:08:03while you are doing it. And, oh, and that's it. He doesn't want any more.
0:08:10 > 0:08:15Not one for the easy life, Laura also has a full-time job.
0:08:15 > 0:08:18I work for an organisation within DEFRA called the Animal And Plant Health Agency.
0:08:18 > 0:08:23We work towards safeguarding animals and human health.
0:08:24 > 0:08:26I absolutely love my job.
0:08:26 > 0:08:28I really do.
0:08:28 > 0:08:33DEFRA, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs,
0:08:33 > 0:08:39was established in 2001 following a devastating foot and mouth epidemic.
0:08:39 > 0:08:41Laura is one of its many inspectors,
0:08:41 > 0:08:46sent across the country to ensure farms now meet certain standards.
0:08:46 > 0:08:49With my age, it does throw up challenges.
0:08:49 > 0:08:53However, I think the fact that I do understand where they're coming from
0:08:53 > 0:08:54and having, you know,
0:08:54 > 0:08:57the goats and having met so many different people and understanding
0:08:57 > 0:09:00what they're going through, it definitely helps.
0:09:00 > 0:09:05But I do think they see me and they think, "what does she know?"
0:09:05 > 0:09:06Yeah, you do that one.
0:09:09 > 0:09:10I look cleaner than I normally do.
0:09:11 > 0:09:15Since Laura and her mother moved to the country to live with her
0:09:15 > 0:09:20grandparents, the whole family have immersed themselves in rural life.
0:09:20 > 0:09:23I'm from the town, definitely a townie, and we moved here.
0:09:23 > 0:09:26I wanted to move here to give Laura a better life, really.
0:09:26 > 0:09:30I just felt that because my parents love animals and we came and Laura
0:09:30 > 0:09:32took to it like a duck to water, really.
0:09:32 > 0:09:34She loves it.
0:09:39 > 0:09:43Laura's grandfather Steve, a former property developer,
0:09:43 > 0:09:45shares her love of farming.
0:09:45 > 0:09:47I didn't know what keeping land was all about.
0:09:47 > 0:09:49I thought you just mowed and that's it.
0:09:49 > 0:09:52But it's a full-time job.
0:09:52 > 0:09:54But we did what we did, and it's took a few years.
0:09:57 > 0:10:01My job here really now, now that the house is finished and everything, is I keep the land,
0:10:01 > 0:10:06and it's to go along with, build Laura up. I'm happy to do it.
0:10:12 > 0:10:17She's brilliant. Absolutely brilliant with animals.
0:10:18 > 0:10:20Me and Grandad are really close.
0:10:20 > 0:10:23He's definitely been there for me.
0:10:23 > 0:10:25I remember I used to sit in bed with him and be like right,
0:10:25 > 0:10:28what are we going to... Like, when I was really, really young,
0:10:28 > 0:10:30we'd be like, one day, we are going to have a quad bike and lambs and we
0:10:30 > 0:10:32can bottle-feed them and all this.
0:10:32 > 0:10:35Like, never ever thinking it would ever happen.
0:10:35 > 0:10:36Laura is...
0:10:40 > 0:10:41She's everything.
0:10:43 > 0:10:44I love...
0:10:47 > 0:10:48I love my grandkids.
0:10:51 > 0:10:53Laura's the sort of person I don't...
0:10:53 > 0:10:56I would have loved to be when I was younger.
0:10:56 > 0:10:58I'd have loved her life.
0:11:06 > 0:11:09While the others run the farm side of things...
0:11:09 > 0:11:14- Hi, girls.- ..Laura's grandmother Shirley also digs in to help.
0:11:15 > 0:11:17Growing vegetables.
0:11:18 > 0:11:20We'll have these later for dinner.
0:11:20 > 0:11:22And that's the other thing, really,
0:11:22 > 0:11:26it's nice to pick things and then take it straight to the kitchen and
0:11:26 > 0:11:27in 24 hours, you've eaten it.
0:11:27 > 0:11:31It just feels like you've produced something for yourself,
0:11:31 > 0:11:33you haven't had to go and buy it.
0:11:33 > 0:11:36Out the way, come on. There you go.
0:11:37 > 0:11:39Good girls.
0:11:39 > 0:11:41Let's see if you've laid me any eggs.
0:11:41 > 0:11:44And proving home-grown is always satisfying.
0:11:45 > 0:11:48Just the one. Good girls.
0:11:48 > 0:11:50They're lovely, the chickens. Two eggs each day.
0:11:50 > 0:11:52And I don't care what anybody says,
0:11:52 > 0:11:55your own eggs are much better than the ones you have in the shops.
0:11:59 > 0:12:04However, a farming life has meant serious adjustments.
0:12:04 > 0:12:05It's never-ending, really.
0:12:05 > 0:12:09It's not something that you can't just not do one day.
0:12:09 > 0:12:11When Laura said that she wanted to have goats,
0:12:11 > 0:12:12I was really quite concerned
0:12:12 > 0:12:15as I was thinking how are we going to go on holiday?
0:12:15 > 0:12:18How can we go out for the day because we have to get back for milking?
0:12:18 > 0:12:20But it's become a way of life for all of us now,
0:12:20 > 0:12:24and we really don't know what we'd do without them, really.
0:12:24 > 0:12:28You don't want to be getting in at three o'clock in the morning and then milking at 6-7 o'clock.
0:12:28 > 0:12:30I don't really drink or go out, and I don't mind that,
0:12:30 > 0:12:33I do think it probably does come down to the goats.
0:12:33 > 0:12:36But I think, I think my grandad's probably quite happy about that.
0:12:37 > 0:12:39With no farming background,
0:12:39 > 0:12:43the Ketleys are finding their feet together to build a future.
0:12:44 > 0:12:47And for Laura, that future is goat meat.
0:12:49 > 0:12:53I'd like, eventually, like, 100 breeding nannies.
0:12:53 > 0:12:55I've sent, like, the kids for meat before,
0:12:55 > 0:12:57instead of sending them for pets.
0:12:57 > 0:13:00And I just can't keep up with demand, it's unbelievable.
0:13:00 > 0:13:03I sold it to local restaurants, just the local people,
0:13:03 > 0:13:05and it goes down really, really well,
0:13:05 > 0:13:08so there's definitely a market out there for it.
0:13:08 > 0:13:11We got the space, and I don't mind, I've got the time.
0:13:11 > 0:13:17But it's just, I can't detach from them being my pets or friends
0:13:17 > 0:13:19to them going to the meat market, sort of thing.
0:13:22 > 0:13:25If that's what she wants to do, then we'll back her 100%
0:13:25 > 0:13:27because I do think there is a future in goat meat.
0:13:27 > 0:13:29And I think that's the way she wants to go.
0:13:31 > 0:13:36It's not just her future business plans Laura's thinking about.
0:13:36 > 0:13:37I'd love to marry a farmer.
0:13:38 > 0:13:39That is all I want.
0:13:41 > 0:13:42Scruffy old thing.
0:13:44 > 0:13:49Marry a farmer, milk cows, have sheep, goats, everything.
0:13:56 > 0:14:01Down in Oxfordshire, with only a few days until the Moreton-in-Marsh show,
0:14:01 > 0:14:03Betty's hoping to add to her collection.
0:14:04 > 0:14:06If she can find any space, that is.
0:14:06 > 0:14:08It's called the trophy room,
0:14:08 > 0:14:12and the number of people that have come in here and they've sort of like,
0:14:12 > 0:14:14"Oh, my God."
0:14:16 > 0:14:18"Do you know how many rosettes there?" Not a clue.
0:14:20 > 0:14:2440 years of showing livestock has brought a lot of accolades,
0:14:24 > 0:14:28making Betty one of the most decorated exhibitors in the country.
0:14:28 > 0:14:31Well, it's like a haven in a way.
0:14:31 > 0:14:34It's like nostalgia, isn't it?
0:14:34 > 0:14:36They can't take this away from me.
0:14:36 > 0:14:38I've proven myself.
0:14:39 > 0:14:42It's not just a flash in the pan, it's been dedication over...
0:14:42 > 0:14:46Well, I first started showing early '70s with the ponies,
0:14:46 > 0:14:50we had a lead rein pony, which is that pony up there with my husband.
0:14:50 > 0:14:55This was '84, at the Royal Welsh, where I was presented to the Queen.
0:14:55 > 0:14:57Nobody's got wallpaper like I have.
0:15:04 > 0:15:07I like to come in here when we've had a really busy day,
0:15:07 > 0:15:09perhaps come in with a drink, sit down,
0:15:09 > 0:15:12and that I can look round and
0:15:12 > 0:15:15think, yeah, that's a lovely rosette, isn't it?
0:15:15 > 0:15:17But then I remember that day vividly.
0:15:17 > 0:15:19What a day, what a day.
0:15:22 > 0:15:24Now, you're a naughty boy.
0:15:24 > 0:15:29This year, Betty is recruiting two very special helpers for show day.
0:15:29 > 0:15:34Granddaughters Sophie, who's 16, and Lily, who's just five.
0:15:34 > 0:15:37- Oh, look who's arrived! Hello.- Hi.
0:15:38 > 0:15:41- Lovely to see you! - Grandma and Grandad.
0:15:41 > 0:15:45Oh, I haven't seen you for a while, have we?
0:15:45 > 0:15:46Hello, sweetheart.
0:15:47 > 0:15:52Son Philip and his wife Claire have brought Lily and grandson Harry to
0:15:52 > 0:15:54meet the goats before the big day.
0:15:54 > 0:15:56And do you know what his name is?
0:15:56 > 0:15:58Toy Boy. He's a toy boy.
0:15:58 > 0:16:01Cos he likes toys?
0:16:01 > 0:16:02Yes, he likes toys.
0:16:04 > 0:16:05Come on, hidey ho.
0:16:05 > 0:16:08Lily is going to need some practice before showing
0:16:08 > 0:16:10Grandma's prized goats.
0:16:10 > 0:16:13Do you want to try that? Stand over her, go on, it's like a pony.
0:16:13 > 0:16:16She won't hurt you. Go on, stand over her.
0:16:16 > 0:16:18That's it, I'll hold you.
0:16:18 > 0:16:20I'm a bit small.
0:16:20 > 0:16:22Well, I am, too.
0:16:22 > 0:16:26Right, now you've got to get your fingers, gently, one each side,
0:16:26 > 0:16:27and just show their teeth.
0:16:37 > 0:16:41Philip is no stranger to his mother's grand passion.
0:16:41 > 0:16:44To be fair, if she could get a lead on a caterpillar, she would.
0:16:47 > 0:16:49I think it's incredibly good to see my parents happy,
0:16:49 > 0:16:51you know, in the twilight years as such.
0:16:51 > 0:16:53You know, they've been through a lot,
0:16:53 > 0:16:57and the job's been incredibly hard work, and as with anybody, you know,
0:16:57 > 0:17:01they have their ups and downs. And absolutely amazing to see the kids
0:17:01 > 0:17:05having a fantastic time with the animals.
0:17:05 > 0:17:06First time,
0:17:06 > 0:17:08so what more can you ask?
0:17:09 > 0:17:11That's it, keep walking.
0:17:11 > 0:17:13You are doing well there, Lily.
0:17:19 > 0:17:22So you're going to get your goat ready for the show, Lily?
0:17:22 > 0:17:26- Wow.- Even with decades of showing experience behind her,
0:17:26 > 0:17:29Betty's still relatively new to goats.
0:17:29 > 0:17:33Showing is important because then you know whether you're on the right
0:17:33 > 0:17:37track, that you're actually breeding to the right standard
0:17:37 > 0:17:38and that you are improving.
0:17:38 > 0:17:40I think that looks good.
0:17:40 > 0:17:42Just a bit here because it's a little bit rough.
0:17:42 > 0:17:47We're taking 20 pygmy goats to the show.
0:17:47 > 0:17:48Which is about normal for me.
0:17:48 > 0:17:52I'm taking some of my very, very best and special ones.
0:17:52 > 0:17:56My high hopes are that everything goes well, that's all you can ask,
0:17:56 > 0:17:58and we have a good day and we come back happy,
0:17:58 > 0:18:02and we bring the best goats home, no matter what.
0:18:02 > 0:18:04Regardless of what the judge feels.
0:18:04 > 0:18:05We might not win anything.
0:18:05 > 0:18:07No, well, there's always that.
0:18:07 > 0:18:09- Somebody's opinion. - It's somebody's opinion.
0:18:09 > 0:18:11It's just somebody's opinion. That's showing.
0:18:11 > 0:18:14- Yep.- It's not the winning, it's the taking part.- Part!
0:18:23 > 0:18:24Up in Warwickshire,
0:18:24 > 0:18:27Laura and her family also have show day in their sights.
0:18:29 > 0:18:32What do you actually win? Anything? Or is it just...
0:18:32 > 0:18:34I think there's quite good prize money.
0:18:34 > 0:18:36Best in show is about £100, I think.
0:18:36 > 0:18:38- Is it?- I don't know.- But just...
0:18:38 > 0:18:41I didn't realise how competitive I was until I started showing
0:18:41 > 0:18:43the goats, and then I think it's just...
0:18:43 > 0:18:45I just want to keep improving.
0:18:45 > 0:18:49I'd like them all to do well, and they're all capable of doing well,
0:18:49 > 0:18:52I suppose. It just depends who is there on the day.
0:18:52 > 0:18:56- A red rosette is all we really want, isn't it?- Yeah, the red, yeah.
0:18:56 > 0:18:58- Not blue.- No.- No.
0:18:58 > 0:19:02- Laura doesn't settle for anything but first.- Oh.
0:19:04 > 0:19:06Good girl. Come and get it.
0:19:06 > 0:19:08Final preparations are under way.
0:19:08 > 0:19:13They're ready. Good girls.
0:19:13 > 0:19:18And Laura's goats enjoy nothing more than a good wash and shave.
0:19:18 > 0:19:23So this is just a normal men's beard trimmer, but it does the job.
0:19:23 > 0:19:27Cos now it's got a nice... It's got a nice line.
0:19:27 > 0:19:31Oh, a little bit there. Come here.
0:19:31 > 0:19:33That's it. All done.
0:19:33 > 0:19:36- GOAT BLEATS - I know. Don't be miserable.
0:19:39 > 0:19:42But prizes won't be handed out on appearances alone.
0:19:43 > 0:19:46For some, tomorrow will be more than a beauty pageant.
0:19:48 > 0:19:49So this is Abbey.
0:19:49 > 0:19:51She's going in the milking class.
0:19:51 > 0:19:54So she'll be judged on how much milk she gives
0:19:54 > 0:19:57and then also her milk will be sampled and be sent to the lab,
0:19:57 > 0:20:01where they find out how much percentage of protein's in it
0:20:01 > 0:20:04and the butter fats as well.
0:20:04 > 0:20:05Thanks, Abs.
0:20:08 > 0:20:12The final touch is a home-sewn show jacket.
0:20:12 > 0:20:15These coats actually keep their coats nice and smooth
0:20:15 > 0:20:18after they've been washed, so that's why we put these on.
0:20:18 > 0:20:20And then when they're travelling in
0:20:20 > 0:20:22the trailer, they should stay as clean as possible.
0:20:22 > 0:20:24That's it. They look posh now.
0:20:25 > 0:20:26Ready?
0:20:28 > 0:20:29Look at that little girl.
0:20:33 > 0:20:37We are going to put mummy and baby in here because they are only tiny
0:20:37 > 0:20:39and she knows where she's going. Don't you?
0:20:39 > 0:20:44With nothing else left to shave, shine, clip or cover,
0:20:44 > 0:20:47both farming families can only hope they've done enough.
0:20:49 > 0:20:54In Oxfordshire, Betty loads her strongest pygmy goats.
0:20:54 > 0:20:55- Off we go.- While, in Warwickshire,
0:20:55 > 0:20:57Laura has her four dairy Toggenburgs.
0:20:57 > 0:21:01In you go. Steady, steady.
0:21:02 > 0:21:07- In you go.- Come on, girls. Go on.
0:21:07 > 0:21:08Watch your head.
0:21:08 > 0:21:10There we go.
0:21:10 > 0:21:12- Brilliant.- Off to the show you go.
0:21:12 > 0:21:14Careful.
0:21:16 > 0:21:18Let's go!
0:21:35 > 0:21:38As the sun rises over the Cotswolds,
0:21:38 > 0:21:41the 68-year-old Moreton-In-Marsh show is coming to life.
0:21:43 > 0:21:45I think the Moreton show is very,
0:21:45 > 0:21:47very important to the local community.
0:21:47 > 0:21:50It brings an awful lot of kudos to the area.
0:21:50 > 0:21:51Being able to go around the whole show
0:21:51 > 0:21:53and see all the different sections,
0:21:53 > 0:21:55and to see the number of people
0:21:55 > 0:21:57that have come and enjoyed the show with us.
0:21:57 > 0:21:59That is a wonderful, wonderful thing.
0:21:59 > 0:22:02Months of hard work and preparation will come together today.
0:22:03 > 0:22:08Over 20,000 people are expected at this annual celebration of
0:22:08 > 0:22:10Gloucestershire rural life.
0:22:10 > 0:22:14Moreton-In-Marsh is important for the people around here to be able
0:22:14 > 0:22:16to come and exhibit their animals, to be able to show them off,
0:22:16 > 0:22:20to be able to let the public know and to try and encourage the public
0:22:20 > 0:22:22to start keeping goats.
0:22:23 > 0:22:26Across 150 acres of green fields,
0:22:26 > 0:22:30hundreds of exhibitors ready themselves and their livestock
0:22:30 > 0:22:32for a packed day of competition.
0:22:37 > 0:22:42It's a community that is no stranger to early mornings and Betty arrives
0:22:42 > 0:22:43in high spirits.
0:22:45 > 0:22:46Oh, what a beautiful day.
0:22:48 > 0:22:52That's nice. I hope it's going to be successful.
0:22:52 > 0:22:55Let's hope. Let's just check my babies in the back.
0:22:59 > 0:23:04Betty's first job is to settle the goats into their pens, and she has
0:23:04 > 0:23:07friends Rowan and Dennis on hand to help her.
0:23:07 > 0:23:09Showing is a shop window, really.
0:23:09 > 0:23:11Proving that you've got good animals and good stock.
0:23:13 > 0:23:19It is important to get them out and let them be seen in public.
0:23:22 > 0:23:24I think it's a natural thing, you get nervous.
0:23:24 > 0:23:29You hope that the little goat will go well for you and that the goats
0:23:29 > 0:23:32enjoy it as well. And they are not stressed at all.
0:23:32 > 0:23:34They are all very calm, as you can see,
0:23:34 > 0:23:36and they're taking it all in their stride.
0:23:36 > 0:23:39Even the little babies that have never been off the farm before.
0:23:42 > 0:23:46Moreton-In-Marsh may be Betty's first show of the year,
0:23:46 > 0:23:48but she's been doing the show circuit for long enough
0:23:48 > 0:23:51to know it doesn't hurt to check out the competition.
0:23:52 > 0:23:55There's a lot of exhibitors here today
0:23:55 > 0:23:57that go from show to show to show
0:23:57 > 0:24:00throughout the year, so they are well seasoned and they've done
0:24:00 > 0:24:02a lot of showing.
0:24:02 > 0:24:06It would be really nice to be in the first three in every class,
0:24:06 > 0:24:07at least.
0:24:13 > 0:24:16In the dairy goat tent, the farmers are looking sprightly,
0:24:16 > 0:24:19despite being up since 5am.
0:24:22 > 0:24:25They had to deliver their competition entry milk for analysis.
0:24:28 > 0:24:32Abbey got the highest morning yield,
0:24:32 > 0:24:35which she's never done before, so that's quite good.
0:24:35 > 0:24:37And hopefully, she'll do just as well tonight.
0:24:37 > 0:24:40Yeah, and then at ten o'clock we are back in the ring,
0:24:40 > 0:24:43empty udders, and then that's when we'll get placed.
0:24:49 > 0:24:52I've got the highest hopes...
0:24:53 > 0:24:55I don't... I'm not quite... I wouldn't like to say.
0:24:55 > 0:24:57Abbey has done quite good on her milk,
0:24:57 > 0:24:59so I'm quite pleased with that,
0:24:59 > 0:25:01so we'll see.
0:25:04 > 0:25:06Come on. Get you some food.
0:25:10 > 0:25:13Food is the most important thing cos that's what makes the milk,
0:25:13 > 0:25:15and that's half the competition, so...
0:25:16 > 0:25:18Good girl. When she doesn't eat,
0:25:18 > 0:25:21it makes me think she is not entirely...
0:25:22 > 0:25:27..happy about being here,, but I think she's settled in now.
0:25:27 > 0:25:30I think, as long as they are with their friends, then they are fine.
0:25:30 > 0:25:34Abbey is her mum as well, so she's with mummy.
0:25:34 > 0:25:36Hey? Happy?
0:25:40 > 0:25:45While Laura waits for her big moment in the ring, the gates have opened.
0:25:45 > 0:25:47Like the Cotswolds around it,
0:25:47 > 0:25:50the show attracts country and city folk alike.
0:25:50 > 0:25:55And we wait just for a moment or two more
0:25:55 > 0:25:59as our exhibitors prepare their champions to come
0:25:59 > 0:26:01into this ring.
0:26:01 > 0:26:04Betty looks the part and is ready for competition.
0:26:04 > 0:26:10This one is the male class for goats aged eight weeks to a year.
0:26:10 > 0:26:11This is Lionheart.
0:26:13 > 0:26:14He's a little billy.
0:26:16 > 0:26:18Eh? A little boy.
0:26:18 > 0:26:20A little billy in the making.
0:26:20 > 0:26:23The quality of goats is getting far better and better,
0:26:23 > 0:26:26and it's going to be a struggle probably today to find
0:26:26 > 0:26:29anyone with faults, as such,
0:26:29 > 0:26:31so you are nit-picking, really.
0:26:31 > 0:26:33Come on, then. Come on.
0:26:33 > 0:26:38Betty and Lionheart enter the ring but find themselves quarantined.
0:26:38 > 0:26:40Her goats have been officially cleared
0:26:40 > 0:26:42of a viral form of goat arthritis,
0:26:42 > 0:26:45while the rest of today's competitors have not.
0:26:47 > 0:26:51Being in a separate ring away from the others doesn't worry me at all
0:26:51 > 0:26:55because the judge judges each animal individually anyway.
0:26:57 > 0:26:59As the only billy Betty is showing today,
0:26:59 > 0:27:03she hopes young Lionheart will do her proud.
0:27:03 > 0:27:06But it seems the poor kid is already at a disadvantage.
0:27:07 > 0:27:10Lionheart has only got one eye.
0:27:10 > 0:27:15We had to have the left eye removed because somehow he ruptured his
0:27:15 > 0:27:18eyeball when he was about two weeks old, and here he is today.
0:27:19 > 0:27:22And it doesn't seem to hamper him too much anyway.
0:27:22 > 0:27:23Just do a small circle.
0:27:23 > 0:27:25Yeah, surely, yes. I'll do my best.
0:27:25 > 0:27:26Come on, lovely man.
0:27:26 > 0:27:29- SHE CLICKS TONGUE - Come on.
0:27:29 > 0:27:31Come on. Come on.
0:27:31 > 0:27:32Come on. That's it.
0:27:32 > 0:27:34That's it. Thank you.
0:27:34 > 0:27:35Thank you.
0:27:36 > 0:27:40Time for judge Ian to inspect the others.
0:27:40 > 0:27:42It's a strong turnout today.
0:27:42 > 0:27:46With seven entries, competition will be tough for one-eyed Lionheart.
0:27:54 > 0:27:56Thank you.
0:27:56 > 0:27:59- Right, so... And third for yourself. - Thank you very much.
0:28:00 > 0:28:03While it's not a red, it is a third place.
0:28:05 > 0:28:10Great! I'm pleased that he did well, cos of his having one eye, you know.
0:28:10 > 0:28:13You never know whether it will be taken against him,
0:28:13 > 0:28:15but obviously it wasn't his fault, so...
0:28:15 > 0:28:18He's done really well. Haven't you, darling, eh?
0:28:21 > 0:28:24With competition in full swing at ground level,
0:28:24 > 0:28:28others are heading skywards to show off their hard-earned rural skills.
0:28:30 > 0:28:32Tree surgeons are so called
0:28:32 > 0:28:35because of their in-depth knowledge of tree biology.
0:28:35 > 0:28:39I think in this area we can be sort of very lax on thinking that,
0:28:39 > 0:28:42because we live in the countryside, we know all about trees.
0:28:42 > 0:28:45And it's not so much about wearing wellies and having a Land Rover.
0:28:45 > 0:28:47It is about actually understanding
0:28:47 > 0:28:50what trees do and what good tree pruning is
0:28:50 > 0:28:51and what bad tree pruning is.
0:28:51 > 0:28:54It's a natural asset that we've got in the countryside,
0:28:54 > 0:28:56and we need to look after it.
0:28:56 > 0:28:59These men are the guardians of the countryside. And if being an
0:28:59 > 0:29:01airborne hero isn't enough,
0:29:01 > 0:29:06this year they are trying to spread the word with a woodchip lucky dip.
0:29:06 > 0:29:08All you've got to do is root around in there,
0:29:08 > 0:29:12you've got to find a pine cone just like that with a raffle ticket.
0:29:12 > 0:29:16Just to get kids' hands dirty and get them involved in something.
0:29:16 > 0:29:18Oh, what have you got there?
0:29:18 > 0:29:21It's just quirkiness, to get us talking to people about trees
0:29:21 > 0:29:23and what can be done.
0:29:28 > 0:29:35And then a very large display of the Cotswold sheep.
0:29:35 > 0:29:37With her feet firmly on the ground,
0:29:37 > 0:29:40Laura is getting ready to show off her big haul,
0:29:40 > 0:29:42Abbey.
0:29:42 > 0:29:44- Is that straight, yeah? - Number one, can't be bad.
0:29:44 > 0:29:46I know, yes. Started off well.
0:29:50 > 0:29:51OK, good luck.
0:29:52 > 0:29:57- Right, let's go.- Abbey might have scored top marks in the highest milk
0:29:57 > 0:30:00yield, but now she's got to trot her stuff in the show ring.
0:30:07 > 0:30:09Today's judge is Paul Mounter.
0:30:09 > 0:30:13As a champion breeder of dairy goats for 26 years,
0:30:13 > 0:30:15he knows what to look for in the show ring.
0:30:16 > 0:30:18It's not a bad turnout today.
0:30:18 > 0:30:21Most of the classes have filled up, which is quite nice.
0:30:21 > 0:30:23I'm excited to see what we've got.
0:30:23 > 0:30:25Good girl.
0:30:25 > 0:30:27- Thanks very much.- Thank you.
0:30:27 > 0:30:28Ever the support team,
0:30:28 > 0:30:31Laura's family anxiously wait to see
0:30:31 > 0:30:34if she can scoop the coveted red rosette.
0:30:35 > 0:30:36She looks good, actually.
0:30:36 > 0:30:38I think she's got a chance.
0:30:38 > 0:30:41Let's hope so. Otherwise Laura is not going to be very happy.
0:30:41 > 0:30:43She takes it very seriously.
0:30:50 > 0:30:52Thank you. Brilliant, thank you.
0:30:52 > 0:30:53She got first!
0:30:53 > 0:30:55Yay! Well done, Laura.
0:30:55 > 0:30:57It's a fantastic start for Laura.
0:31:00 > 0:31:03That's excellent. Well done, Laura.
0:31:03 > 0:31:05We are pleased.
0:31:05 > 0:31:07I like to see the red rosette.
0:31:08 > 0:31:10That's excellent. Well done, you.
0:31:13 > 0:31:15Oh, clever Abbey.
0:31:15 > 0:31:17Such a good girl.
0:31:17 > 0:31:19Oh, that's great.
0:31:19 > 0:31:21Another one for the collection.
0:31:21 > 0:31:23- Let's have a look. - It's a nice rosette, as well.
0:31:23 > 0:31:25Smashing. That's great.
0:31:25 > 0:31:28Really good start. Let's hope it carries on that way now.
0:31:28 > 0:31:31Hopefully we'll carry on like that way.
0:31:31 > 0:31:33There's still life in the old 'uns.
0:31:33 > 0:31:37She's the oldest one here, but she won, so I'm over the moon.
0:31:37 > 0:31:39It's worth getting up for.
0:31:39 > 0:31:42Excellent. Let's just hope we do well with the others next.
0:31:49 > 0:31:54The morning has flown by, and with rosettes for both Laura and Betty,
0:31:54 > 0:31:57everyone is making the most of the bank holiday.
0:32:00 > 0:32:04Moreton-In-Marsh is an agricultural show celebrating
0:32:04 > 0:32:06all the Cotswolds has to offer.
0:32:08 > 0:32:11At every turn, you can sample an abundance of crafts,
0:32:11 > 0:32:13hobbies and pastimes.
0:32:16 > 0:32:19But today, it's also a perfect opportunity
0:32:19 > 0:32:21to see some entertainment that
0:32:21 > 0:32:23only the countryside could offer.
0:32:24 > 0:32:27That's the one we want.
0:32:27 > 0:32:29The spectacle that is...
0:32:31 > 0:32:33..the dancing diggers!
0:32:35 > 0:32:37These monster machines have a combined weight
0:32:37 > 0:32:41of over 80 tonnes, but they wouldn't look out of place on Strictly.
0:32:42 > 0:32:46And it looks like Steve's got his eye on one of the dancers.
0:32:46 > 0:32:47Think of the work you could do with that!
0:32:58 > 0:33:03After an act of that calibre, the goat tent seems very quiet.
0:33:08 > 0:33:11But things are about to kick off because Laura has two entries
0:33:11 > 0:33:15in the next competition, and she can't show them alone.
0:33:15 > 0:33:16Are you ready now to go in the ring?
0:33:16 > 0:33:18- What, have I got to go in now? - Yeah, yeah.
0:33:18 > 0:33:22Oh, no, really? I need my coat then. I don't know where it is.
0:33:22 > 0:33:25So now we are going to goating class
0:33:25 > 0:33:26with Scarlett and Pearl,
0:33:26 > 0:33:29and my mum is going to have to be thrown in the deep end!
0:33:29 > 0:33:30I need a number?
0:33:30 > 0:33:32- Yeah.- 21.
0:33:32 > 0:33:33My age.
0:33:37 > 0:33:40This might be Vicky's first time in the show ring,
0:33:40 > 0:33:42but she's doubling their chances of winning.
0:33:44 > 0:33:46Laura is keeping the best for herself.
0:33:46 > 0:33:48- Well...- No, mine is going to win.
0:33:48 > 0:33:52- Beginners' luck.- Keep the collar under her chin. Come on, baby.
0:33:52 > 0:33:54- Just wait there for me. - You've got to win.
0:33:54 > 0:33:56You've got to do well.
0:33:59 > 0:34:01Stress!
0:34:01 > 0:34:03Behave.
0:34:04 > 0:34:05It's fine!
0:34:09 > 0:34:11One eye on the goat. One eye on the judges.
0:34:13 > 0:34:15If you can. Facing that way.
0:34:15 > 0:34:17That's it. That's it, perfect.
0:34:17 > 0:34:20It's the first time Vicky has done it.
0:34:20 > 0:34:23- She's all right, though. - Face that way, please.
0:34:25 > 0:34:28HE TUTS
0:34:28 > 0:34:31Not a lot of competition in this one, so...
0:34:31 > 0:34:32No.
0:34:34 > 0:34:36- JUDGE:- Leave them like that.
0:34:36 > 0:34:3822 is first.
0:34:38 > 0:34:4021 is second.
0:34:40 > 0:34:41Thank you very much.
0:34:42 > 0:34:44- Good girl.- Not bad.
0:34:45 > 0:34:49- Thank you so much.- And it's another great result for Laura as she takes
0:34:49 > 0:34:53first place and Vicky comes a close second.
0:34:53 > 0:34:54- Happy?- Oh, yeah.
0:34:58 > 0:35:00I think it's beginners' luck somehow.
0:35:02 > 0:35:03I'm feeling really chuffed.
0:35:04 > 0:35:06Another red, that's great.
0:35:06 > 0:35:07But, yeah, they did well.
0:35:07 > 0:35:11- Really good. I'm really pleased with them.- I've learned a bit. I'm going to come next time.
0:35:11 > 0:35:14If you give me a bit of training, I'll beat you next time.
0:35:14 > 0:35:16Does that put them in good stead for the next one?
0:35:16 > 0:35:19Yeah. I can't wait for next year!
0:35:19 > 0:35:22For a novice, Laura is having an excellent day.
0:35:28 > 0:35:31The spotlight is now on veteran Betty.
0:35:31 > 0:35:36We are starting the first section of the adult female,
0:35:36 > 0:35:38and we've got three in it,
0:35:38 > 0:35:40so we'll have to get a move on.
0:35:40 > 0:35:44Technically, there will be four goats going into the ring,
0:35:44 > 0:35:47as this young kid has no intention of leaving his mother.
0:35:49 > 0:35:52He's got to come in with her, as well,
0:35:52 > 0:35:54Just cos he can't be left on his own.
0:35:54 > 0:35:56Three is a lot to wrangle,
0:35:56 > 0:36:00and Betty will need her show friends to lend a hand.
0:36:01 > 0:36:03If you just stand her behind.
0:36:07 > 0:36:10Her eye is all right? Yes.
0:36:24 > 0:36:28Right, so when you line up, first, second and then third.
0:36:28 > 0:36:30OK?
0:36:30 > 0:36:34The judge makes a call on which of Betty's three goats he likes best.
0:36:35 > 0:36:37- Right, relax.- But he still has
0:36:37 > 0:36:40to inspect the six others in this class.
0:36:40 > 0:36:42Well, I'm pleased she's come first of these.
0:36:42 > 0:36:44This was one of
0:36:44 > 0:36:47the ones I was hopeful for, but that's only just the start.
0:36:47 > 0:36:48We haven't finished yet.
0:36:49 > 0:36:53Betty is starting to wonder if things are going to go her way.
0:36:53 > 0:36:57Everything we've had in here, he's criticised really harshly,
0:36:57 > 0:37:00and all those in there, they get away with murder.
0:37:03 > 0:37:04And this one doesn't want to walk.
0:37:06 > 0:37:07Not in the right mood.
0:37:11 > 0:37:13Is it lame? I can't see.
0:37:13 > 0:37:14It's not right.
0:37:23 > 0:37:24Six and seven, yeah, OK.
0:37:26 > 0:37:30It's not the result Betty had hoped for...
0:37:30 > 0:37:34- So that one's six.- ..with her best pygmy goat placing in sixth.
0:37:35 > 0:37:37I don't believe it.
0:37:38 > 0:37:39I'm so sorry.
0:37:41 > 0:37:43I know it slipped out of my hand.
0:37:43 > 0:37:44Unbelievable. Come on.
0:37:45 > 0:37:48- Unbelievable.- Not our day today.
0:37:48 > 0:37:49No.
0:37:49 > 0:37:52Bit disappointing because I thought my goats were good enough
0:37:52 > 0:37:58to at least win one or two classes, as they normally do.
0:37:58 > 0:38:04But obviously, the judges' type is not the same as what I have,
0:38:04 > 0:38:07so...there we go.
0:38:07 > 0:38:08Onwards and upwards!
0:38:13 > 0:38:16But Betty remembers what today is all about.
0:38:18 > 0:38:21Today, we are going to have a lovely family day.
0:38:21 > 0:38:24Five-year-old Lily will be leading Bambi in the pet class,
0:38:24 > 0:38:28specifically for goats that are not used for breeding stock.
0:38:28 > 0:38:30Here is your goat, Lils.
0:38:30 > 0:38:33- And Sophie will help you. - Ready, steady, go.
0:38:34 > 0:38:37- Don't let go.- Bambi is the only goat in the class.
0:38:37 > 0:38:41- This way.- But, when showing any animal, placing is never guaranteed.
0:38:43 > 0:38:45Just walk out there.
0:38:45 > 0:38:46Ready?
0:38:50 > 0:38:53This way, Lils. Bring him this way.
0:38:53 > 0:38:57Betty hopes Bambi and the girls can do enough to impress the judge
0:38:57 > 0:39:00and secure her first red rosette.
0:39:00 > 0:39:02Lily, I think you've won!
0:39:03 > 0:39:05There we go, then. First place for you.
0:39:06 > 0:39:07Thank you.
0:39:08 > 0:39:12Lily's first time in the ring is a successful one.
0:39:12 > 0:39:14Grandma and Grandad couldn't be happier.
0:39:14 > 0:39:16Well done, Lily! You got a red one.
0:39:16 > 0:39:18Thank you. Ready?
0:39:20 > 0:39:22Right, hold on.
0:39:27 > 0:39:29And at Moreton-In-Marsh show,
0:39:29 > 0:39:31there's just one more competition left.
0:39:33 > 0:39:34The Straw Challenge,
0:39:34 > 0:39:37devised by a local hay and straw supplier.
0:39:37 > 0:39:40And the idea is they have to manoeuvre
0:39:40 > 0:39:43all the straw off the lorry
0:39:43 > 0:39:45on to the trailer as quickly as they possibly can.
0:39:50 > 0:39:53On your marks, get set, go.
0:39:53 > 0:39:56Betty's son, Philip, loves to get in on the fun
0:39:56 > 0:39:58and doesn't like to lose.
0:40:04 > 0:40:07The Great Straw Challenge is a couple of guys on loaders,
0:40:07 > 0:40:11moving straw from the front half of the lorry to the back half of the
0:40:11 > 0:40:13lorry with assistance to remove
0:40:13 > 0:40:17the straps and put the straps back on when they've finished.
0:40:17 > 0:40:22The UK harvests an estimated 12.2 million tonnes of straw
0:40:22 > 0:40:23a year.
0:40:24 > 0:40:28With vast quantities being exported across the country and abroad,
0:40:28 > 0:40:31it takes heavy-duty equipment and teamwork
0:40:31 > 0:40:33to keep the industry moving.
0:40:46 > 0:40:48Ladies and gentlemen, give them around of applause.
0:40:48 > 0:40:50They're all fantastic.
0:40:50 > 0:40:52- Well done. - It was a foregone conclusion.
0:40:52 > 0:40:54We just went through the motions.
0:40:54 > 0:40:58We actually took it steady, keep it real.
0:40:58 > 0:41:01- CHILD:- I still couldn't believe how you cheated!
0:41:01 > 0:41:03PHILIP LAUGHS
0:41:11 > 0:41:15As the day draws to a close at Moreton-In-Marsh show,
0:41:15 > 0:41:19we say farewell to the green fields of the Cotswolds for another year.
0:41:21 > 0:41:24It's been an eventful day for both the families.
0:41:24 > 0:41:29- Thank you very much. - Filled full of highs and a few lows.
0:41:29 > 0:41:31I don't believe it.
0:41:31 > 0:41:35Their hard work and dedication has shown commitment to their animals,
0:41:35 > 0:41:37their families and their future.
0:41:38 > 0:41:40I wouldn't have changed anything that we've done today.
0:41:40 > 0:41:43This is probably one of the best shows that we've ever done.
0:41:43 > 0:41:45It was really nice to have the family here,
0:41:45 > 0:41:47to have some help, as well,
0:41:47 > 0:41:48and they all got stuck in,
0:41:48 > 0:41:50for my mum to come and do some training as well.
0:41:50 > 0:41:52We've had a really, really good day.
0:41:52 > 0:41:54I think my mum has got the bug for showing,
0:41:54 > 0:41:56and I think competition is on between us.
0:42:00 > 0:42:03My highlight today would have been the children being involved with me.
0:42:03 > 0:42:07To have them involved and actually enjoying it was...
0:42:07 > 0:42:10..that was more important than anything else, or any rosette.
0:42:11 > 0:42:15I'm still proud of my goats whether we win or lose.
0:42:15 > 0:42:19It doesn't matter. I'm still taking the best goats home from this show.
