0:00:02 > 0:00:04In Sheffield, 12 families live together.
0:00:04 > 0:00:06This is our house!
0:00:06 > 0:00:08But these are no ordinary families...
0:00:11 > 0:00:12MAN LAUGHS
0:00:12 > 0:00:14..and this is no ordinary house.
0:00:16 > 0:00:18This is the only family rehab in the UK.
0:00:20 > 0:00:22This is about your recovery.
0:00:22 > 0:00:24This is about your children.
0:00:25 > 0:00:28More children than ever are being taken into care because their parents
0:00:28 > 0:00:31are addicted to drugs or alcohol.
0:00:33 > 0:00:36This place believes in giving them a second chance.
0:00:36 > 0:00:41My mum said before she got into rehab, "Failure is not an option."
0:00:41 > 0:00:42Say bye.
0:00:42 > 0:00:44Unlike any other rehab,
0:00:44 > 0:00:47it helps mums and dads give up their addiction
0:00:47 > 0:00:49while they care for their children.
0:00:49 > 0:00:53My mum told me she would do whatever she could.
0:00:53 > 0:00:54To get you back.
0:00:54 > 0:00:56Happy birthday, Mum!
0:00:56 > 0:00:57Thank you!
0:00:57 > 0:00:59Recovery will be tough.
0:01:00 > 0:01:02I'm sorry!
0:01:02 > 0:01:05But these parents know if they don't get clean,
0:01:05 > 0:01:08they'll lose their children for good.
0:01:08 > 0:01:11This is not a bail hostel - you don't choose to stay in bed all day.
0:01:11 > 0:01:14Following six months of treatment,
0:01:14 > 0:01:16this is the story of one addicted family
0:01:16 > 0:01:19facing the hardest challenge of their lives.
0:01:19 > 0:01:23Right now, your placement with your son hangs in the balance
0:01:23 > 0:01:24over the next seven days.
0:01:24 > 0:01:27Try and take my kid, mate - over my dead body.
0:01:28 > 0:01:30If somebody wants to play games,
0:01:30 > 0:01:31go and play them somewhere else,
0:01:31 > 0:01:33because the stakes are too high here.
0:01:41 > 0:01:44At Phoenix Futures Family Service,
0:01:44 > 0:01:47parents and children stay in a therapeutic community,
0:01:47 > 0:01:48confronting addiction together.
0:01:50 > 0:01:53The parents are often motivated by the fact
0:01:53 > 0:01:54that they're here with the children.
0:01:54 > 0:01:57We don't want the children to be in foster care,
0:01:57 > 0:01:59we don't want the families to be broken up,
0:01:59 > 0:02:03and it's often a reminder that this is the last chance for them.
0:02:03 > 0:02:05Oh, look at that big smile this morning.
0:02:05 > 0:02:08I know, beautiful smile, he's got, Kyle!
0:02:11 > 0:02:14Oh, that's mine!
0:02:14 > 0:02:16Says, "I'll have a little look at it, though."
0:02:16 > 0:02:1936-year-old Micky is a crack and heroin addict.
0:02:19 > 0:02:21He started taking drugs at 13.
0:02:23 > 0:02:26He's beginning six months of treatment with his son Kyle.
0:02:26 > 0:02:28Feel better than what I did yesterday morning.
0:02:28 > 0:02:30The programme has three stages.
0:02:31 > 0:02:33The first is to detox.
0:02:34 > 0:02:37A daily dose of methadone, a heroin substitute,
0:02:37 > 0:02:40should wean Micky off the physical craving.
0:02:40 > 0:02:41One, two, three, whee!
0:02:41 > 0:02:43KYLE SQUEALS
0:02:43 > 0:02:45See you later.
0:02:45 > 0:02:46Bye!
0:02:46 > 0:02:49Well, me and my partner were going to come in as a family,
0:02:49 > 0:02:51me, Kyle and Faye.
0:02:51 > 0:02:54But then Faye got sent down, well,
0:02:54 > 0:02:58remanded for a short time, which messed it all up.
0:02:58 > 0:03:02So, I thought I'd come in and start it off with Kyle.
0:03:02 > 0:03:04Social services were on my back a bit.
0:03:05 > 0:03:09If I hadn't have come in here, they were going to take us to court,
0:03:09 > 0:03:11because we've been doing it for such a long time.
0:03:11 > 0:03:14You know, it's just a bad habit, and we just need to kick it out,
0:03:14 > 0:03:17and I know people say, you know, you shouldn't do it,
0:03:17 > 0:03:19your kids, and that, and we used to be one of the people
0:03:19 > 0:03:22that used to say that, but you don't realise how hard it is.
0:03:23 > 0:03:27Micky - his preferred method is injecting,
0:03:27 > 0:03:29so he's been injecting prior to coming to us.
0:03:29 > 0:03:32He started using heroin when he was 18 years of age,
0:03:32 > 0:03:35and that has spanned over 17 years,
0:03:35 > 0:03:39so he's got quite a lengthy history of heroin addiction.
0:03:39 > 0:03:40He is in a relationship with Kyle's mother.
0:03:42 > 0:03:46Faye - she's 28 years of age.
0:03:46 > 0:03:49Substances of choice are heroin, crack and alcohol.
0:03:52 > 0:03:55Faye is also trying to control her addiction,
0:03:55 > 0:03:57and to resist the temptation of heroin
0:03:57 > 0:03:59with her daily dose of methadone.
0:04:00 > 0:04:02But she's doing it on the outside.
0:04:04 > 0:04:08Because Micky and Kyle had gone away, obviously, all of a sudden,
0:04:08 > 0:04:09I'm on my own, and...
0:04:09 > 0:04:13come up here to the chemist, and there's all people
0:04:13 > 0:04:16who are on heroin, and they're talking about it and saying,
0:04:16 > 0:04:19"Oh, such and such has got some really good gear,"
0:04:19 > 0:04:22and then you're dead down, and you think one won't hurt,
0:04:22 > 0:04:25and then you have it, and then it's another, then it's another,
0:04:25 > 0:04:28and then you've got a habit on top of your methadone.
0:04:32 > 0:04:35The reason why I went to prison was because I was offending,
0:04:35 > 0:04:38I was pinching, to support my drug habit.
0:04:41 > 0:04:45The local authority have been involved with Kyle from birth,
0:04:45 > 0:04:47and they've had some concerns, obviously,
0:04:47 > 0:04:52about Kyle's safety in terms of Mum and Dad's substance misuse,
0:04:52 > 0:04:56and there's been some concerns about Kyle's development and any harm that
0:04:56 > 0:05:00he may have suffered as a consequence of Mum and Dad's use.
0:05:00 > 0:05:02I do love you.
0:05:02 > 0:05:05Social services issued an ultimatum -
0:05:05 > 0:05:09give up drugs and go to rehab, or lose Kyle.
0:05:09 > 0:05:11If I lost him, that would be the end of me -
0:05:11 > 0:05:13I'd go completely out of control.
0:05:13 > 0:05:18I'd end up in prison, and it'd be a downward spiral,
0:05:18 > 0:05:19and I'd go...
0:05:19 > 0:05:25And I need to be going with them and changing my life and being a mum,
0:05:25 > 0:05:26a mother to my little boy.
0:05:26 > 0:05:29KYLE CRIES
0:05:29 > 0:05:33It's been strange - it's been all about drugs in the past,
0:05:33 > 0:05:35except for now when it's about Kyle.
0:05:35 > 0:05:38So she's going to come in here, we're both going to be drug-free...
0:05:38 > 0:05:40and build a new life together,
0:05:40 > 0:05:43and find out if we're compatible off drugs!
0:05:43 > 0:05:44HE CHUCKLES
0:05:44 > 0:05:48Which is, like... Which is what we'll all work on in here, isn't it?
0:05:49 > 0:05:54The only thing that worries me is, like, if we argue and that,
0:05:54 > 0:05:58you know what I mean, and she, or me for that matter, go out and use,
0:05:58 > 0:05:59do you know what I mean?
0:05:59 > 0:06:01It's always going to be there, isn't it?
0:06:01 > 0:06:02Always, forever.
0:06:04 > 0:06:10That worries me, but I know for a fact that I won't, because of Kyle.
0:06:10 > 0:06:12And I like to think she wouldn't, and all.
0:06:12 > 0:06:13Only time will tell.
0:06:14 > 0:06:16One, two, three...
0:06:16 > 0:06:17Change this bum-bum.
0:06:17 > 0:06:20KYLE CHATTERS
0:06:20 > 0:06:21Every weekday morning,
0:06:21 > 0:06:24the children are looked after at an on-site nursery,
0:06:24 > 0:06:27where they're assessed by Jen and the childcare team.
0:06:28 > 0:06:31In here, it's very noisy.
0:06:31 > 0:06:34Kyle doesn't seem to respond very well to a lot of noise.
0:06:34 > 0:06:36Kyle, when he gets frustrated, head-butts the floor.
0:06:36 > 0:06:39Not uncommon for kids to do that.
0:06:39 > 0:06:41It seems to be a way that they express their frustrations
0:06:41 > 0:06:44when they can't verbalise what they're feeling.
0:06:44 > 0:06:49However, Kyle does it on such a regular basis that we're concerned,
0:06:49 > 0:06:50as a childcare department,
0:06:50 > 0:06:54because there's definitely some delay in his learning at the minute.
0:06:57 > 0:07:01When Faye and Micky were at home,
0:07:01 > 0:07:05apparently, Kyle was placed in a pushchair in front of the telly,
0:07:05 > 0:07:08whilst the parents were misusing substances.
0:07:09 > 0:07:13It's very difficult at this point to tell if Kyle is delayed
0:07:13 > 0:07:16because of the lack of interaction,
0:07:16 > 0:07:22or if it's something that will later have a diagnosis, ADHD or autism -
0:07:22 > 0:07:23we don't know.
0:07:24 > 0:07:28- Got nowhere to go, Micky. - Go in my room, if you want.
0:07:28 > 0:07:29Don't be cheeky!
0:07:29 > 0:07:31Polly has weekly sessions with Micky.
0:07:33 > 0:07:37As his key worker, she keeps social services informed of his progress.
0:07:38 > 0:07:40You're a good member of the community, aren't you?
0:07:40 > 0:07:42I like to think so, but I can get carried away,
0:07:42 > 0:07:45- so I have to engage brain sometimes. - Yeah, all right.
0:07:45 > 0:07:47- And I am working on it, I do try. - Yeah.
0:07:47 > 0:07:51- What's difficult, then? What are you finding difficult?- It's just...
0:07:52 > 0:07:54Erm... My emotions are like a roller-coaster.
0:07:54 > 0:07:57One minute, I'm dead happy, then dead sad, and then dead angry.
0:07:57 > 0:07:58You know what I mean?
0:07:58 > 0:08:00- I'm like, boom, where's that come from?- OK.
0:08:00 > 0:08:03- And the slightest little thing will piss me off.- All right.
0:08:03 > 0:08:05So you're aware of that, you're reflecting on that.
0:08:05 > 0:08:08- Do you know what's causing it?- I know it's the detox causing that,
0:08:08 > 0:08:11I know it is. I've not been opiate or drug-free since 18,
0:08:11 > 0:08:13since I can remember, you know what I mean?
0:08:13 > 0:08:17Drinking methadone this morning, there's only about that much in it,
0:08:17 > 0:08:19- it's like, well... - "What am I doing?"- Mmm.
0:08:19 > 0:08:20But I know for a fact, Faye,
0:08:20 > 0:08:23she won't take it as easy as me, cos she's got bad health, anyway.
0:08:23 > 0:08:24OK.
0:08:24 > 0:08:26There has been times where she's been that sick,
0:08:26 > 0:08:29ambulance has had to come to give her a sickness injection.
0:08:29 > 0:08:32- OK.- And if that don't happen, normally, we'd have some gear,
0:08:32 > 0:08:35- and that would soothe it down, but we can't do that, can we?- No.
0:08:37 > 0:08:40He seems to have a pretty good routine with Kyle.
0:08:40 > 0:08:43He's involving himself in groups and the community,
0:08:43 > 0:08:47so it's all going in the right direction, I think, for him.
0:08:47 > 0:08:50There will probably come at a stage where he digs his heels in,
0:08:50 > 0:08:52and doesn't like something about the programme,
0:08:52 > 0:08:55and then we can perhaps see more of his real self,
0:08:55 > 0:08:58rather than this happy-go-lucky chappie
0:08:58 > 0:09:00who's just going to sail through it all.
0:09:00 > 0:09:01I'm sure it won't be that easy.
0:09:05 > 0:09:08The daily routine is strict.
0:09:08 > 0:09:10Parents must share household chores.
0:09:11 > 0:09:14I don't want to be cleaning, but it's part of the rota, isn't it?
0:09:14 > 0:09:18Supposed to try and take your mind off feeling whatever.
0:09:19 > 0:09:22I don't do it at home, Faye does it.
0:09:27 > 0:09:30I suppose, after doing all this,
0:09:30 > 0:09:32I'll be qualified for a cleaner job, won't I?
0:09:34 > 0:09:36I want better than a cleaning job, anyway,
0:09:36 > 0:09:38but there's nowt wrong in it.
0:09:38 > 0:09:41I want to go back to forklift truck driving.
0:09:42 > 0:09:44I enjoyed that.
0:09:44 > 0:09:47So what happened to that job?
0:09:47 > 0:09:50That were about ten, 11 years ago.
0:09:50 > 0:09:53My brother did a five-year stint in jail.
0:09:53 > 0:09:55Luke, the one who's dead now, bless him.
0:09:55 > 0:09:59And he said, "Micky, can I come and live with you?
0:09:59 > 0:10:02"I don't want to go in a hostel, back on drugs, and that."
0:10:02 > 0:10:03So I said yeah.
0:10:03 > 0:10:07Within a week, him and my missus had started seeing each other.
0:10:09 > 0:10:10And that just did it - I didn't go to work.
0:10:10 > 0:10:14I just didn't go back, and started back on Class A drugs.
0:10:14 > 0:10:15I went on self-destruct.
0:10:18 > 0:10:19We didn't talk for a long time.
0:10:21 > 0:10:25But then my auntie died, and we went to her funeral,
0:10:25 > 0:10:27and me and Luke made up, like, you know what I mean?
0:10:27 > 0:10:28And...
0:10:28 > 0:10:32And then he died when Kyle were about a week old.
0:10:33 > 0:10:37He got a nasty infection through his, erm...
0:10:37 > 0:10:38site where he injects.
0:10:39 > 0:10:41From catching it to dying only took four days.
0:10:43 > 0:10:45So I'm glad I made up with him.
0:10:47 > 0:10:50Are you ready? Go upstairs?
0:10:53 > 0:10:55Whee! Whoo-whoo-whoo!
0:10:55 > 0:10:57Are we going to see Mama and Grandad?
0:10:57 > 0:11:00KYLE CHATTERS
0:11:00 > 0:11:02Look - Mama and Grandad!
0:11:02 > 0:11:04After detoxing,
0:11:04 > 0:11:07residents are allowed occasional visits from family members
0:11:07 > 0:11:11to help maintain a connection with the outside world.
0:11:11 > 0:11:13For Micky's parents, Pete and Carol,
0:11:13 > 0:11:15it's the first time in 23 years
0:11:15 > 0:11:17they've seen their son clean of drugs.
0:11:18 > 0:11:22He had his difficulties as a very small boy,
0:11:22 > 0:11:27with a speech impediment, and he only had the infant school -
0:11:27 > 0:11:29he didn't have much of his senior school.
0:11:29 > 0:11:31He got expelled, which is a shame,
0:11:31 > 0:11:34and we were never able to get him into another school.
0:11:35 > 0:11:37That's when he was out on the street, from the age of 12.
0:11:39 > 0:11:41Him and his younger brother, they were out on the streets -
0:11:41 > 0:11:44we could not bring them back into the home.
0:11:44 > 0:11:45CAROL SIGHS
0:11:45 > 0:11:49They would do things, like, for the older boys,
0:11:49 > 0:11:51get through windows,
0:11:51 > 0:11:54to actually open the windows for robbery, burglary,
0:11:54 > 0:11:56and that's how it all started.
0:11:57 > 0:12:00But the thing is, because there was so much lies,
0:12:00 > 0:12:02so much deceit,
0:12:02 > 0:12:05it's very, very difficult for us now -
0:12:05 > 0:12:07it's 36 years -
0:12:07 > 0:12:09to actually break down the barriers.
0:12:11 > 0:12:14We've got a terminology that the parasites have come in,
0:12:14 > 0:12:17cos we know that we're going to be ripped off.
0:12:17 > 0:12:20All they want to do is drain you of your blood, your lifeblood.
0:12:21 > 0:12:24They're not your children, so you can't think of them
0:12:24 > 0:12:29as that little hairy-backed boy that popped out, and...
0:12:29 > 0:12:32- HE CHUCKLES - ..gave us a smile at such an early age
0:12:32 > 0:12:34that, you know, you fell in love with.
0:12:34 > 0:12:37So, you've actually...
0:12:37 > 0:12:40A parasite has been created out of the husk of your child,
0:12:40 > 0:12:44as you might say, just to get that next fix.
0:12:44 > 0:12:46You try everything, don't you, everything.
0:12:46 > 0:12:47Nothing.
0:12:47 > 0:12:51It's too strong a thing to do anything.
0:12:51 > 0:12:57With not just having one addict, we've had two addicts. Erm...
0:12:58 > 0:13:00If you look on the far wall,
0:13:00 > 0:13:03you'll actually see a picture of his brother, Luke.
0:13:03 > 0:13:09After a 20-year journey, he didn't have the immunity,
0:13:09 > 0:13:10and finally, it killed him.
0:13:12 > 0:13:14And that's the only way that I can explain it.
0:13:16 > 0:13:18CAROL SOBS
0:13:33 > 0:13:37Residents must attend daily group therapy sessions,
0:13:37 > 0:13:39which start with everyone sharing their feelings.
0:13:40 > 0:13:42- Morning, people! - OTHERS:- Morning.
0:13:42 > 0:13:44I feel like crap tonight!
0:13:44 > 0:13:45LAUGHTER
0:13:45 > 0:13:48You know, my body's aching all over me, and...
0:13:48 > 0:13:50You know what I mean, up and down.
0:13:50 > 0:13:53But I'm positive. I'm thinking about Faye coming, that's making my year,
0:13:53 > 0:13:55- that has.- First day substance-free! - Yeah.
0:13:55 > 0:13:57THEY CHEER AND APPLAUD
0:13:59 > 0:14:00Oh, Faye!
0:14:03 > 0:14:05Seven weeks in for Micky and Kyle,

0:14:40 > 0:14:42Yeah, so I've been Micky's key worker,
0:14:42 > 0:14:46- so I'll be looking after both of you together.- Yeah.
0:14:46 > 0:14:48Keep going. Keep you trim!
0:14:48 > 0:14:50FAYE LAUGHS

0:14:55 > 0:14:58Smuggled drugs and alcohol, mobile phones,
0:14:58 > 0:15:00or even addictive energy drinks
0:15:00 > 0:15:03can put the recovery of all the housemates at risk.
0:15:04 > 0:15:07Faye's come in while I've come off it, methadone,
0:15:07 > 0:15:09and I'll be feeling better for when she's feeling worse,
0:15:09 > 0:15:13so we'll be able to help each other through it, especially with Kyle.
0:15:13 > 0:15:16But Faye - it's going to be a lot harder for Faye, I know it is.
0:15:16 > 0:15:19- Right, there you are, missus. - My birthday on Monday.- Ah!
0:15:19 > 0:15:21Very good!
0:15:23 > 0:15:27As Faye detoxes, her methadone will be gradually reduced.
0:15:27 > 0:15:28These bottles are getting very small.
0:15:30 > 0:15:32It normally takes a month to complete the detox.
0:15:34 > 0:15:37Trying to stop using substances, either heroin or methadone...
0:15:38 > 0:15:42..all those emotions that they've suppressed for quite a long time
0:15:42 > 0:15:45kind of come to the surface, sometimes through anger.
0:15:45 > 0:15:49It is quite a sensitive time, and it can be quite overwhelming.
0:15:50 > 0:15:52Am I allowed to go and get my meds before I feed Kyle?
0:15:53 > 0:15:57Well, that's your decision, isn't it? Do what you want.
0:15:57 > 0:15:58I'll go and get my meds, yeah.
0:15:58 > 0:16:01You go and carve the meal up, and I'll get it when I get back, yeah?
0:16:03 > 0:16:05So, you mean, me give Kyle his dinner,
0:16:05 > 0:16:08cos there's about ten people waiting for meds downstairs.
0:16:08 > 0:16:11- Right, well, I'll do it, then.- No, I'll do it. Just go, Faye, just go.
0:16:11 > 0:16:14- Just get gone.- I'll do it now, then. - No, I'll do it!
0:16:14 > 0:16:17You shouldn't make a job out of it, you should do it easily,
0:16:17 > 0:16:19you should WANT to do it.
0:16:19 > 0:16:22I am. Micky, I fed him earlier on.
0:16:22 > 0:16:27Sweetheart, how do you think I coped for all them seven weeks on my own?
0:16:27 > 0:16:29Get on with it - soldier on.
0:16:30 > 0:16:32# Oh, baby Kyle... #
0:16:32 > 0:16:36Show Daddy that beautiful smile!
0:16:36 > 0:16:39Show Daddy that beautiful smile!
0:16:41 > 0:16:44Whee! Good boy!
0:16:44 > 0:16:47Me and Faye - that's hard work at the minute.
0:16:47 > 0:16:48For me, it is, anyway.
0:16:50 > 0:16:52We've got to get in a routine, haven't we?
0:16:52 > 0:16:53Do you know what I mean?
0:16:53 > 0:16:56Me and Kyle were in a good routine, and now it's just gone to pot,
0:16:56 > 0:16:58and we need to focus on that.
0:17:01 > 0:17:03Don't head-butt the water!
0:17:04 > 0:17:07Me and Micky are really stressed out.
0:17:07 > 0:17:09You know, cos he's done his detox.
0:17:09 > 0:17:14Erm...but sometimes he says I don't do a lot with Kyle, which I do.
0:17:14 > 0:17:16Most people see me with Kyle a lot.
0:17:16 > 0:17:22But he isn't... You know, he thinks he does everything, so...
0:17:22 > 0:17:23But, erm...
0:17:23 > 0:17:29I just wish he'd communicate more with me instead of...going off...
0:17:29 > 0:17:31If I talk to him, he says I'm moaning.
0:17:32 > 0:17:34Me and Faye, we'll soldier on, we'll get through it.
0:17:34 > 0:17:37I know I say to her sometimes, "Oh, piss off and leave,"
0:17:37 > 0:17:40you know what I mean, but she should know I just...
0:17:40 > 0:17:43I just say stuff in temper, and I don't mean it.
0:17:45 > 0:17:47We've been through a lot, me and Micky.
0:17:47 > 0:17:51So I just hope that I get the strength, and...
0:17:52 > 0:17:54..that if there is a God above, he doesn't give me
0:17:54 > 0:17:57too much of a bad detox, you know,
0:17:57 > 0:17:59and he helps me through it, and gives me some strength.
0:17:59 > 0:18:01Oh...
0:18:01 > 0:18:03Just stay here two minutes.
0:18:03 > 0:18:06KYLE CRIES
0:18:08 > 0:18:12Until now, Kyle's been happier in the quiet baby room.
0:18:12 > 0:18:14But things are changing.
0:18:14 > 0:18:20Sarah, I'm wondering if Kyle's asking to go next door.
0:18:20 > 0:18:21Yeah?
0:18:21 > 0:18:23I think this is what we're getting upset about.
0:18:23 > 0:18:25I think he's, like, "Get me out of here"!
0:18:26 > 0:18:28Kyle's doing really well.
0:18:28 > 0:18:30From being in here and being quite settled in here,
0:18:30 > 0:18:33we've noticed that he started to get a little bit fractious.
0:18:33 > 0:18:36As soon as we let him into the sleep room,
0:18:36 > 0:18:39he went straight over to the door which leads to nursery,
0:18:39 > 0:18:41and was really excited and laughing.
0:18:43 > 0:18:45And I think Kyle's trying to tell us
0:18:45 > 0:18:48that he's ready to explore somewhere else,
0:18:48 > 0:18:52and be challenged by more advanced activities, so that's great.
0:18:52 > 0:18:56Initially, there didn't seem to be any particular focus.
0:18:56 > 0:18:59Now, he's really engaging with IT, toys,
0:18:59 > 0:19:01so he's just naturally progressing,
0:19:01 > 0:19:04and got to a point where he is actually interested in toys
0:19:04 > 0:19:07that are going to be a bit more involving for him.
0:19:14 > 0:19:18Six weeks in, and Faye's prayers for an easy detox have gone unanswered.
0:19:19 > 0:19:22She's skipping the compulsory group sessions
0:19:22 > 0:19:25because of her struggle to come off heroin.
0:19:25 > 0:19:29On a methadone reduction, we usually reduce by 5ml every three days.
0:19:29 > 0:19:32So, that first day might be a little bit uncomfortable,
0:19:32 > 0:19:38the middle day should have levelled out, third day will be fine,
0:19:38 > 0:19:39and then you'll reduce again.
0:19:39 > 0:19:42It's been worked out as the perfect reduction.
0:19:43 > 0:19:45I didn't think they reduced you as quick as they did.
0:19:48 > 0:19:50Micky didn't tell me.
0:19:50 > 0:19:52I think he did that for a reason.
0:19:56 > 0:19:59Cos that would have probably... It might have put me off coming,
0:19:59 > 0:20:00that might have.
0:20:00 > 0:20:03Or I would have tried to get it changed before I come.
0:20:05 > 0:20:06He should have told me, really.
0:20:10 > 0:20:11KNOCKING
0:20:11 > 0:20:13Come in!
0:20:13 > 0:20:16Faye, why are you walking round with your dressing gown on?
0:20:16 > 0:20:18I've got my clothes on underneath.
0:20:18 > 0:20:21Yes, but still, you can't be walking round with your dressing gown on.
0:20:23 > 0:20:27Faye doesn't want her methadone to be reduced so quickly.
0:20:27 > 0:20:32What Faye wants to do is start going down by 1ml or 2ml,
0:20:32 > 0:20:34and it's just not practical.
0:20:34 > 0:20:38It doesn't make sense - it just extends it and extends it.
0:20:38 > 0:20:39Erm...
0:20:39 > 0:20:42And, you know, by the time they're down to the last 5ml,
0:20:42 > 0:20:43you can barely...
0:20:43 > 0:20:45you know, you can barely see, it's very little.
0:20:45 > 0:20:50So there isn't actually very much methadone still in her system.
0:20:53 > 0:20:54KYLE SIGHS
0:20:55 > 0:20:56SHE MURMURS
0:21:01 > 0:21:02Ohh...
0:21:04 > 0:21:05Oh, big boy.
0:21:05 > 0:21:07Oh! Careful.
0:21:10 > 0:21:12No! Ouchy.
0:21:15 > 0:21:16No.
0:21:20 > 0:21:22KYLE CHATTERS
0:21:24 > 0:21:26You know I'm poorly, don't you?
0:21:27 > 0:21:30I've got no energy, I'm aching, I feel sick.
0:21:30 > 0:21:32My stomach's killing.
0:21:32 > 0:21:36Ohh... It's just like flu, but a million times worse.
0:21:38 > 0:21:41And my mental health's not good - I've been crying all morning.
0:21:43 > 0:21:44That's how...
0:21:44 > 0:21:48That's how my mum went - she went like that, and had a breakdown.
0:21:51 > 0:21:56And my mum has got schizophrenia and bipolar, which is hereditary...
0:21:57 > 0:22:00..and they won't assess me until I've come off my methadone.
0:22:00 > 0:22:05Well, last night, when I was, erm... up and about...
0:22:06 > 0:22:09..you know, my head... were thinking all sorts.
0:22:09 > 0:22:11KYLE'S TOY PLAYS MUSIC
0:22:13 > 0:22:16You know, like me head were talking to me saying,
0:22:16 > 0:22:18"Just go, just leave, just go, leave."
0:22:24 > 0:22:26She seems to now be hitting this mental block
0:22:26 > 0:22:31in terms of convincing herself that the symptoms are potentially worse
0:22:31 > 0:22:32than what they are,
0:22:32 > 0:22:35convincing herself that she needs to slow it down,
0:22:35 > 0:22:38and hanging on to that medication for as long as possible.
0:22:38 > 0:22:41You know, I don't doubt that the experience that she's having,
0:22:41 > 0:22:44whether that be physical and mental, is very real for her.
0:22:44 > 0:22:48However, I've got no doubt in my mind it's a little bit, erm...
0:22:48 > 0:22:49fabricated.
0:22:51 > 0:22:53- MURMURS:- Kyle, play nicely, please.
0:22:53 > 0:22:57While on detox, residents are not allowed out without supervision.
0:22:58 > 0:23:01Micky's entered the second stage of treatment -
0:23:01 > 0:23:03learning to live without drugs.
0:23:03 > 0:23:05He's now trusted to go out alone.
0:23:05 > 0:23:08It's nothing like jail, obviously, but...
0:23:08 > 0:23:10when I were on staff escort,
0:23:10 > 0:23:13it were like having your mum and dad follow you round everywhere.
0:23:13 > 0:23:16And because the house is so busy, you know,
0:23:16 > 0:23:20they could only take you out for an hour, or sometimes not even that,
0:23:20 > 0:23:21and I felt like I was...
0:23:21 > 0:23:24you know what I mean, just locked in all the time.
0:23:25 > 0:23:26Ladies first.
0:23:27 > 0:23:29Freedom brings temptation.
0:23:31 > 0:23:33The wanderer returns!
0:23:33 > 0:23:37Micky buys forbidden contraband as a gift for Faye.
0:23:37 > 0:23:39You know, you didn't even make a very good job
0:23:39 > 0:23:40of trying to get it in, did you?
0:23:40 > 0:23:42Shoved under your jacket.
0:23:42 > 0:23:43That shows how daft I am, innit?
0:23:43 > 0:23:47Well, yeah. I mean, how do you see rules? Do you...
0:23:47 > 0:23:49The choice were bad what I made, trying to bring Red Bull in,
0:23:49 > 0:23:52but it wasn't for my person, you know what I mean?
0:23:52 > 0:23:53And Faye didn't know nowt about it -
0:23:53 > 0:23:56I brought it in cos she were weak that night, weak the morning before,
0:23:56 > 0:23:58- so I thought it'd give her some energy, innit?- But even...
0:23:58 > 0:24:00I know it was a stupid choice.
0:24:00 > 0:24:02Apart from the stupidity of using energy drinks...
0:24:04 > 0:24:08Cos... It was my behaviour - if I'd have got that Red Bull in,
0:24:08 > 0:24:10what would she have probably said the day after -
0:24:10 > 0:24:12"Will you go and get me some gear?" You know what I mean?
0:24:12 > 0:24:15And I've reflected on it after, and I understand, and I know that.
0:24:18 > 0:24:19OK.
0:24:38 > 0:24:40She's got tummy problems, anyway.
0:24:40 > 0:24:42Her tummy's swelled up.
0:24:44 > 0:24:46And she is...
0:24:46 > 0:24:49being sick constantly on and off, for three days, now.
0:24:52 > 0:24:55So she's drinking her methadone, spewing it up, having her diaze,
0:24:55 > 0:24:56spewing it up.
0:24:56 > 0:24:58It just a vicious circle, isn't it?
0:25:03 > 0:25:06- Have you been told to move off the landing?- No.
0:25:08 > 0:25:09Not good.
0:25:11 > 0:25:12Some toast, yeah?
0:25:19 > 0:25:21Just imagine...
0:25:22 > 0:25:25..if you was in here on your own, innit?
0:25:25 > 0:25:27You wouldn't be able to look after your kid, would you?
0:25:27 > 0:25:30And what would happen in that case, innit?
0:25:30 > 0:25:31SHE RETCHES
0:25:40 > 0:25:41SHE GROANS
0:25:41 > 0:25:42SHE SIGHS
0:25:46 > 0:25:47KNOCKING
0:25:48 > 0:25:50- Hello, Faye?- Yeah.
0:25:52 > 0:25:54Micky's asked me to ask you to come down.
0:25:58 > 0:26:01Faye's been in treatment for two months.
0:26:01 > 0:26:03She should have detoxed a month ago.
0:26:03 > 0:26:04But she's not progressing.
0:26:08 > 0:26:12Thank you for everybody that was on time, but group starts at eight.
0:26:14 > 0:26:15So, if you're not on time,
0:26:15 > 0:26:17there will be sanctions, and things like that.
0:26:17 > 0:26:20So it's really important that people are down here for eight.
0:26:23 > 0:26:25Evening group starts with parents exchanging notes
0:26:25 > 0:26:28to comment on each other's behaviour.
0:26:28 > 0:26:30Go on, Faye, you go. Go on.
0:26:30 > 0:26:32"To Faye, from Micky.
0:26:32 > 0:26:35"For your, mine and Kyle's future, you can do it. I have faith in you.
0:26:35 > 0:26:38"Just keep thinking of the life we will have
0:26:38 > 0:26:40"after this pain you're going through.
0:26:40 > 0:26:43"Love, your number one fan, Micky."
0:26:43 > 0:26:45All it is is that she's detoxing.
0:26:45 > 0:26:50And we can't really have people here that aren't going to get out of bed.
0:26:50 > 0:26:52It just doesn't work.
0:26:52 > 0:26:54We're not that sort of place.
0:26:54 > 0:26:58So, if she needs medical care, then she needs to think about
0:26:58 > 0:27:02going to...somewhere that can take care of that.
0:27:02 > 0:27:03Being sick.
0:27:06 > 0:27:11I'm not making any progress therapeutically with Faye at all.
0:27:12 > 0:27:14She's a bit of a drama queen.
0:27:15 > 0:27:19Just think of the life we'll have after, yeah?
0:27:26 > 0:27:30Micky and Faye are leading increasingly separate lives.
0:27:30 > 0:27:32While Faye's bed-bound in the house,
0:27:32 > 0:27:35Micky's doing voluntary work with the rest of the community.
0:27:37 > 0:27:40Recovery through nature, they call it, isn't it? RTN.
0:27:40 > 0:27:42And we're out in the wilderness.
0:27:42 > 0:27:43And...
0:27:43 > 0:27:45fresh air, good for your skin.
0:27:46 > 0:27:48And just crack on with it.
0:27:48 > 0:27:51Makes the day go a bit quicker, splits the weeks up, doesn't it?
0:27:53 > 0:27:56And...without robbing, and that, you need to work, don't you?
0:27:58 > 0:28:00So, that's the way forward for me.
0:28:01 > 0:28:02That's the way forward.
0:28:03 > 0:28:04Woohoo! Ha-ha-ha!
0:28:15 > 0:28:18- Bribing the governor. - Bribery will get you everywhere!
0:28:18 > 0:28:19LAUGHTER
0:28:19 > 0:28:23Micky is now halfway through the six-month programme.
0:28:23 > 0:28:25As one of the senior members of the house,
0:28:25 > 0:28:27he's been given extra responsibilities.
0:28:30 > 0:28:33Every morning, he must check residents are cleaning properly,
0:28:33 > 0:28:37and find out how each person feels, so he can report back to staff.
0:28:38 > 0:28:40Faye?
0:28:40 > 0:28:41How are you feeling today?
0:28:41 > 0:28:45Terrible. Leave me alone. Want to go back to sleep.
0:28:45 > 0:28:47- Feeling terrible and want to go back to sleep.- Yeah.
0:28:47 > 0:28:49Did you have a bad night?
0:28:49 > 0:28:50Yeah.
0:28:52 > 0:28:55Right. I'll see you after.
0:28:58 > 0:29:00- Good morning.- Morning!
0:29:00 > 0:29:02- You're very fresh today. - Thank you very much.
0:29:04 > 0:29:07Faye - "Feeling terrible, and want to go back to sleep,
0:29:07 > 0:29:08"I had a really bad night."
0:29:08 > 0:29:10She's feeling it, man.
0:29:10 > 0:29:13- She is.- OK. But she needs to be up, yeah?
0:29:13 > 0:29:15I know, I agree, and I've been telling her, "You need to get up."
0:29:15 > 0:29:18- It makes it easier. - It does make it easier. It does.
0:29:18 > 0:29:20Yeah, so we need to be encouraging her up and down,
0:29:20 > 0:29:22because lying in that bed, you know,
0:29:22 > 0:29:24detox will be the least of her worries.
0:29:24 > 0:29:26The thing she'll have to worry about is blooming bedsores...
0:29:26 > 0:29:28- MICKY CHUCKLES - ..if you don't get up and get moving!
0:29:28 > 0:29:30- And the day will go so much slower for her.- That's right.
0:29:30 > 0:29:33And I know, I've stressed this, but you can only say it so many times.
0:29:33 > 0:29:36Yeah, so she needs to be up this morning.
0:29:36 > 0:29:39- I'll leave that in your capable hands.- Yeah, I don't mind.
0:29:42 > 0:29:43KNOCKING
0:29:43 > 0:29:44You decent?
0:29:48 > 0:29:49Come on!
0:29:49 > 0:29:50No.
0:29:50 > 0:29:53This stops here.
0:29:53 > 0:29:56This is not a bail hostel - you don't choose to stay in bed all day.
0:29:56 > 0:29:57You get up, and you come to the groups.
0:29:57 > 0:30:00You're in residential rehab, not...
0:30:00 > 0:30:03- Yeah, but...- ..in a bail hostel where you can lay in bed all day.
0:30:03 > 0:30:06I'm know. I'm being sick! I've got gastroenteritis!
0:30:06 > 0:30:10She told... They said, "You need to rest, you're detoxing.
0:30:10 > 0:30:12"You're not sleeping. It is draining you."
0:30:12 > 0:30:15- I'm on dehydration things, and everything. I've not...- That's fine.
0:30:15 > 0:30:20- So...- Faye, you have been in this bedroom for over a week.
0:30:20 > 0:30:22You're picking and choosing what bits you want to do,
0:30:22 > 0:30:24and I appreciate that you feel a little bit run-down
0:30:24 > 0:30:28because of detox, but you are not dying, let me reassure you that.
0:30:28 > 0:30:31Just detoxing? I can't even walk!
0:30:31 > 0:30:34Well, you're quick to get down them stairs when you need a fag!
0:30:34 > 0:30:36I don't... People help me up and down the stairs.
0:30:36 > 0:30:38Well, I'll help you down now.
0:30:38 > 0:30:40- What, you want me to go like this? - Get yourself dressed.
0:30:40 > 0:30:43If there is any more of you not coming to groups,
0:30:43 > 0:30:48then we will be looking at you going to an alternative placement, Faye.
0:30:48 > 0:30:49Get up, get ready.
0:30:49 > 0:30:51It's now ten past.
0:30:51 > 0:30:54- It will take me longer than that... - Not a chance, Faye!
0:30:54 > 0:30:57- Ten minutes. Get ready.- What, I have to get down the stairs as well?
0:30:57 > 0:30:59Yeah - I'll be back up. It's ten past.
0:30:59 > 0:31:02I'll be back up at 20 past, and I'll help you down the stairs.
0:31:06 > 0:31:07They know that they're playing a game -
0:31:07 > 0:31:10they know that they're trying to, you know, kind of get allowances
0:31:10 > 0:31:12where allowances shouldn't be due.
0:31:12 > 0:31:14That's the kind of behaviour that we're dealing with.
0:31:15 > 0:31:18You've got to just keep moving, that's what it is.
0:31:18 > 0:31:22The minute you stop is the minute you start to feel ropey and rough.
0:31:22 > 0:31:25People are, you know, manipulative, they're demanding, they're needy,
0:31:25 > 0:31:28they want instant gratification a lot of the time.
0:31:28 > 0:31:31And part of them recovering is about learning
0:31:31 > 0:31:32that there is prosocial etiquette.
0:31:32 > 0:31:35You can't always have what you want all of the time.
0:31:35 > 0:31:37You can't just take all of the time.
0:31:38 > 0:31:41You should never, in my eyes,
0:31:41 > 0:31:44stop yourself from showing different emotions to your children.
0:31:44 > 0:31:46- CROSSTALK - Because how will...
0:31:46 > 0:31:47- How will they learn?- True.
0:31:47 > 0:31:51And it is completely OK to be upset.
0:31:51 > 0:31:54And as long as you're explaining it to them...
0:31:54 > 0:31:56I think it's healthy to cry, like,
0:31:56 > 0:31:59it gets a lot of emotion out, doesn't it?
0:31:59 > 0:32:00SHE COUGHS
0:32:00 > 0:32:03- You all right, Faye? - No. I'm freezing.
0:32:03 > 0:32:06- MICKY:- You're doing really well, babe, you're smashing it.
0:32:06 > 0:32:08- I'm dead proud of you.- Proper.
0:32:08 > 0:32:12You're on your last stretch, duck, last stretch.
0:32:12 > 0:32:16You're giving everybody strength just to see you down here,
0:32:16 > 0:32:17and that's for real, that is.
0:32:17 > 0:32:19Don't be sick there, duck.
0:32:19 > 0:32:21I think... Faye, just leave.
0:32:21 > 0:32:22Thank you.
0:32:25 > 0:32:27Did I feel any better sat in that room?
0:32:27 > 0:32:28Don't shout at me.
0:32:28 > 0:32:29No, I didn't.
0:32:30 > 0:32:32I'm on your side.
0:32:32 > 0:32:34I didn't feel any better at all.
0:32:34 > 0:32:36- No...- I just thought, "Ooh, I've got a virus,
0:32:36 > 0:32:38"and everyone else is going to get it now."
0:32:38 > 0:32:41Poor people, and I'm sat in front of everyone dead ill.
0:32:41 > 0:32:44Well, I'm afraid, sweetheart, you're in here to work the programme.
0:32:44 > 0:32:45If you don't work the programme...
0:32:45 > 0:32:48- She's threatened to kick me out, anyway.- Yeah, exactly.
0:32:48 > 0:32:50If you don't do the programme, they will do.
0:32:50 > 0:32:52And do you want to lose me and Kyle? No, so get on with it.
0:32:56 > 0:32:59- Have you seen Micky or Faye?- Micky's just gone that way, to his bedroom.
0:32:59 > 0:33:03If you see him, could you just remind him we've got a key session?
0:33:05 > 0:33:07- INTERVIEWER:- So, what got you into the line of work?
0:33:07 > 0:33:10Because I didn't know how to do anything else!
0:33:10 > 0:33:14Because I was one of those self-obsessed drug addicts, I guess.
0:33:14 > 0:33:17So I did rehab, and then thought...
0:33:17 > 0:33:19..I don't actually know how to do anything else,
0:33:19 > 0:33:21so maybe this is the field for me.
0:33:21 > 0:33:23I understand this a bit.
0:33:23 > 0:33:29And don't mind telling service users that I used to be a user.
0:33:29 > 0:33:31I don't mind at all, and they really like it.
0:33:31 > 0:33:34They feel that I understand.
0:33:34 > 0:33:36Erm...
0:33:36 > 0:33:39And I think sometimes they expect me to be sympathetic when I'm not.
0:33:41 > 0:33:44So I'm struggling a bit as to what the answer is, as well.
0:33:44 > 0:33:51If your only way out of feeling bad, is opiate-based medication...
0:33:51 > 0:33:53How does that pan out for the rest of your life?
0:33:55 > 0:33:58Well, my mum was on opiates, you know?
0:33:58 > 0:34:01She lives and all, she works. She's... Do you know what I mean?
0:34:01 > 0:34:04We could all be using heroin and look after the kids,
0:34:04 > 0:34:06and we don't see a problem with that,
0:34:06 > 0:34:09- but obviously, there is a problem with it.- Mmm.
0:34:10 > 0:34:13Do you know what I mean? It's all right saying loads of people do it,
0:34:13 > 0:34:14but they shouldn't be.
0:34:16 > 0:34:17Be... You know, their life's shit.
0:34:19 > 0:34:20Cos they don't know what's going on.
0:34:20 > 0:34:22And they're dead to everything.
0:34:22 > 0:34:26That's not really what it's about, is it?
0:34:26 > 0:34:28Normally, rheumatoid arthritis,
0:34:28 > 0:34:30normally people only get it in their legs or their knees.
0:34:30 > 0:34:34It's managed by opiates, and opiates aren't allowed in here.
0:34:35 > 0:34:40So are you saying that you'd rather be on an opiate painkiller?
0:34:40 > 0:34:42Yeah, for my arthritis, yeah.
0:34:42 > 0:34:44OK.
0:34:44 > 0:34:47So that's going to throw some problems up, isn't it?
0:34:50 > 0:34:51And I suppose it's like, you know,
0:34:51 > 0:34:54we need to think about Kyle in this, as well.
0:34:54 > 0:34:56You've got a lovely little boy growing up there,
0:34:56 > 0:34:59and you're dead from the neck up.
0:34:59 > 0:35:02- That's not good.- Well, I'm not... I'm not going to be dead.
0:35:02 > 0:35:05And, you know, because Kyle is who he is,
0:35:05 > 0:35:07he's going to need a lot of love and attention,
0:35:07 > 0:35:09isn't he, through his life?
0:35:09 > 0:35:10I give it him.
0:35:10 > 0:35:13I don't know, until we speak to the doctor, I don't know, do we?
0:35:13 > 0:35:14OK.
0:35:15 > 0:35:18I'm thinking more about speaking to your workers tomorrow
0:35:18 > 0:35:20to try and get a plan in place, really.
0:35:20 > 0:35:26Cos I do feel that they're going to want some answers, really,
0:35:26 > 0:35:31or some sort of plan as to what is the best way forward.
0:35:32 > 0:35:34And I don't really know what that is.
0:35:38 > 0:35:40KNOCKING
0:35:41 > 0:35:43- Who is it?- Hello!- Ooh, who's this?
0:35:43 > 0:35:45- Hello!- Kyle!
0:35:46 > 0:35:48Ten weeks in for Faye,
0:35:48 > 0:35:51and Kyle's social worker Steph comes to assess
0:35:51 > 0:35:54if funding for her place should continue.
0:35:54 > 0:35:55Unless Faye can give up opiates
0:35:55 > 0:35:58and start to take part in the therapeutic work,
0:35:58 > 0:36:00she may lose her place.
0:36:00 > 0:36:02They don't give me any leeway, do they?
0:36:02 > 0:36:04I guess it's because you're missing
0:36:04 > 0:36:07a big part of what the programme's about,
0:36:07 > 0:36:09and they want to make sure...
0:36:09 > 0:36:12Well, if I'm being sick, they know that I'm being sick,
0:36:12 > 0:36:14and I can't keep nothing down.
0:36:14 > 0:36:17- I hate being like this.- I know - I can't imagine you enjoying it.
0:36:18 > 0:36:20You look dreadful. And I don't mean that in...!
0:36:20 > 0:36:22- I know, I know I do. - You don't look very well.- I know.
0:36:22 > 0:36:25Can you have a word with Rhiannon and that,
0:36:25 > 0:36:28and say they shouldn't make me go into group like that.
0:36:28 > 0:36:30I've not only been detoxing, I've had a sickness bug.
0:36:30 > 0:36:32I'm not going to step on anybody's toes,
0:36:32 > 0:36:34cos they know what they're doing.
0:36:34 > 0:36:37My job is to make sure Kyle's OK,
0:36:37 > 0:36:40and it's about the impact you being ill has on him.
0:36:40 > 0:36:44You know, that's what... my concern at the minute.
0:36:44 > 0:36:46- Right.- OK.- I'll pop downstairs, then,
0:36:46 > 0:36:49- have a chat with everyone, and then...- All right, cheers, Steph.
0:36:56 > 0:36:57Polly?
0:36:57 > 0:37:01She's not really seeing the bigger picture, is she?
0:37:01 > 0:37:04It won't be detox that's making her poorly.
0:37:04 > 0:37:08If there is an underlying health issue that's not being detected,
0:37:08 > 0:37:09which I find quite hard to believe,
0:37:09 > 0:37:12considering she's been to hospital two or three times,
0:37:12 > 0:37:15she's down at the doctor's pretty much every other day.
0:37:15 > 0:37:18Detox will make you feel unwell, a bit of discomfort,
0:37:18 > 0:37:19a bit of lack of sleep,
0:37:19 > 0:37:23and never does detox make people poorly like this.
0:37:23 > 0:37:26- No, I've never seen...- Never. - I've never seen it before.
0:37:26 > 0:37:27It doesn't.
0:37:27 > 0:37:28Would you worry, if Faye leaves,
0:37:28 > 0:37:30do you think Micky's strong enough to stay and commit?
0:37:30 > 0:37:33- I think he would stay. - I think he would stay, yeah.
0:37:33 > 0:37:35- Yeah, I know. - I think he'd be heartbroken,
0:37:35 > 0:37:37but I think he would choose Kyle over Faye,
0:37:37 > 0:37:39which is pretty much what he said, isn't it?
0:37:39 > 0:37:40Yeah, Oh, God, absolutely.
0:37:40 > 0:37:41And you can see him filling up...
0:37:41 > 0:37:44- I know.- I had to turn away!
0:37:44 > 0:37:46- I know. - So I do think Micky's genuinely...
0:37:46 > 0:37:48But there may come a point in the not too distant future
0:37:48 > 0:37:51- where he has to make that decision. - I know, yeah.
0:37:51 > 0:37:53And it's not just because of the placement here -
0:37:53 > 0:37:54let's take that out of it a little bit -
0:37:54 > 0:37:57but really about safeguarding himself and Kyle.
0:37:57 > 0:37:59Yeah, and the fact that, actually,
0:37:59 > 0:38:01the only thing that they've got in common is...
0:38:01 > 0:38:02- is using.- Yeah.
0:38:08 > 0:38:09SHE SIGHS
0:38:11 > 0:38:14She's very vulnerable, so I guess there's the risk
0:38:14 > 0:38:17that she would go back to her old life.
0:38:18 > 0:38:20Erm...
0:38:20 > 0:38:22Which is awful, so sad.
0:38:23 > 0:38:26And again, puts tremendous pressure on Micky,
0:38:26 > 0:38:28because they've been together for such a long time,
0:38:28 > 0:38:31so when he leaves, is he strong enough to...
0:38:31 > 0:38:33You know, to cut ties, and...
0:38:33 > 0:38:35..for his new life?
0:38:37 > 0:38:38Poo-poos!
0:38:38 > 0:38:43I think I need to start talking to Micky about the future,
0:38:43 > 0:38:46and what happens if...erm...
0:38:46 > 0:38:52Faye doesn't make it, or he ends up being not in the family unit
0:38:52 > 0:38:56that he really wanted to be in, and how he's going to manage that.
0:38:57 > 0:39:00He needs to face up to the fact that that may happen.
0:39:00 > 0:39:03Not that it will, but it might do, there's a possibility it might do.
0:39:05 > 0:39:09Faye and Micky have been summoned to a meeting with the management.
0:39:09 > 0:39:11The anticipation's killing me.
0:39:11 > 0:39:13Anticipation!
0:39:14 > 0:39:16We're going downstairs.
0:39:19 > 0:39:21We've just been in the room.
0:39:21 > 0:39:23- I ain't got them.- We're going downstairs to talk about it.
0:39:23 > 0:39:26This isn't the appropriate place, in the middle of the foyer.
0:39:30 > 0:39:33I've had a conversation, and had word from your funders.
0:39:33 > 0:39:36You know that we're in the process of looking at the additional funding
0:39:36 > 0:39:39for you to take you up until after Christmas,
0:39:39 > 0:39:41which would have been in line with the end of the placement.
0:39:41 > 0:39:44- They've not agreed it.- They've not?
0:39:44 > 0:39:47They've not agreed it. So, what that kind of means for you...
0:39:47 > 0:39:48- What, for Faye?- For Faye.
0:39:49 > 0:39:53And what that means for you, Faye, is, erm...
0:39:54 > 0:39:57..you'll no longer be staying with us at this project.
0:39:57 > 0:40:01But the offer on the table for you, and for you to seriously consider,
0:40:01 > 0:40:03is for you to move to our adult service.
0:40:03 > 0:40:05You're going to take me away from Micky and Kyle?
0:40:05 > 0:40:08I'm going home. I'm not going to the adult service.
0:40:08 > 0:40:09- I'm going home.- Why?
0:40:09 > 0:40:14- Go up to adult service, do the rest of your programmes, change...- No!
0:40:14 > 0:40:15- You know what I mean?- No!
0:40:15 > 0:40:17Do what they've got to offer, and we can be a family, innit?
0:40:17 > 0:40:19If you go back home, Faye, you could score across the road.
0:40:19 > 0:40:21- That'll be it.- I'm going home.
0:40:21 > 0:40:23Just repeat back to me what your understanding is
0:40:23 > 0:40:25- of the conversation so far. - That you're kicking me out.
0:40:25 > 0:40:26Right, OK.
0:40:26 > 0:40:29They're not kicking you out - the... The fund...
0:40:30 > 0:40:31The...
0:40:32 > 0:40:35- They're not kicking you...- I'm not going up to the adult service.
0:40:35 > 0:40:37No chance.
0:40:37 > 0:40:39I hear how difficult this is for you to hear
0:40:39 > 0:40:42right at this minute in time, and I appreciate that.
0:40:42 > 0:40:44However, nobody is kicking you out,
0:40:44 > 0:40:47so let me make that very, very clear to you.
0:40:47 > 0:40:50What this is, is about what is going to be best for you, Faye.
0:40:50 > 0:40:53- And this is...- So how long have I got to get my stuff out?
0:40:53 > 0:40:55So, we're going to be talking about a week's time.
0:40:55 > 0:40:58So, this isn't something that's going to happen immediately,
0:40:58 > 0:41:01and the reason for that is the very fact for you to get your head around
0:41:01 > 0:41:04things, and for us to start putting an appropriate plan in place
0:41:04 > 0:41:06for the transition.
0:41:06 > 0:41:09What's the point? There's no point, is there?
0:41:11 > 0:41:14- There's no point!- You're still here. - No, but I'm not here, though, am I?
0:41:14 > 0:41:17Cos I'm not with you and Kyle, so I may as well go home.
0:41:17 > 0:41:20I only come in here because you and Kyle was in here.
0:41:21 > 0:41:23Yeah, but you... That's it.
0:41:23 > 0:41:24Hit the nail on the head, hasn't it?
0:41:26 > 0:41:27Faye, you get yourself out for a fag -
0:41:27 > 0:41:29I just want to talk to Micky for a second.
0:41:31 > 0:41:33Right, I'm going to be honest with you.
0:41:33 > 0:41:35You look like you've used, to me.
0:41:35 > 0:41:37- Test me, then.- I am going to, yeah.
0:41:37 > 0:41:40You look... Your eyes look slightly pinned.
0:41:40 > 0:41:43You look like you've been rubbing your nose and rubbing your face.
0:41:43 > 0:41:45You don't look right to me, Micky.
0:41:49 > 0:41:51So, this is your opportunity to be honest with us,
0:41:51 > 0:41:54because whether we capture you now on some kind of opiate-based test,
0:41:54 > 0:41:57or you're evading our test because it isn't an opiate-based,
0:41:57 > 0:42:00and it's something like pregab or gabapentin, I'll catch you out.
0:42:00 > 0:42:02You mark my words, but I'm telling you now,
0:42:02 > 0:42:04you're not right, and you've used something.
0:42:05 > 0:42:10So, you either tell me now, or we do it on a long, drawn-out test,
0:42:10 > 0:42:13where I go and request a hair strand test.
0:42:14 > 0:42:17Ain't got enough hair to do that. Do one if you want one.
0:42:17 > 0:42:20Just be honest with us, Micky, so we can help you through this.
0:42:20 > 0:42:22Because if you're not, the consequences for this
0:42:22 > 0:42:24is massive for you.
0:42:24 > 0:42:26It's only going to get worse if you don't,
0:42:26 > 0:42:28and I don't mean that in a way of getting worse
0:42:28 > 0:42:30because we'll take some action - what I mean is,
0:42:30 > 0:42:33it will get worse for you, because you're not talking to us about it.
0:42:33 > 0:42:35Because something's happening for you
0:42:35 > 0:42:36that you're not talking to us about,
0:42:36 > 0:42:39and we can't help you if you don't talk to us, can we?
0:42:49 > 0:42:51Talk to us.
0:42:53 > 0:42:57It wouldn't have to be today, and all. Yesterday, innit?
0:42:58 > 0:43:02Well, yesterday, when I went out, I walked on...do you know Spiderweb?
0:43:03 > 0:43:06- In town?- That homeless bloke in there, isn't he? He was...
0:43:06 > 0:43:09- And he had some gear, so I had some wi' him.- OK.
0:43:09 > 0:43:12- Is it gear you've used?- Mmm.
0:43:12 > 0:43:14- That yesterday?- Yeah.
0:43:14 > 0:43:15- Have you had some this morning?- No.
0:43:15 > 0:43:17No?
0:43:17 > 0:43:18And how much have you used?
0:43:20 > 0:43:22A tenner's worth.
0:43:22 > 0:43:24And pin.
0:43:24 > 0:43:26- You injected?- Yeah.
0:43:26 > 0:43:29Micky...
0:43:29 > 0:43:31- Eh?- Risks with that is massive.
0:43:32 > 0:43:35- Anybody else know?- No.
0:43:35 > 0:43:36Not even Faye.
0:43:38 > 0:43:40What I'm going to have to do is test you.
0:43:40 > 0:43:41Mm-hm.
0:43:45 > 0:43:46Come on, let's...
0:43:53 > 0:43:55I think that...
0:43:55 > 0:43:57if he has scored, I think he's fetched it
0:43:57 > 0:44:00and used it later on last night, or he's done it today.
0:44:00 > 0:44:04So, I don't buy his story that he's gone and used,
0:44:04 > 0:44:06then this chap just happened to have all the equipment on him.
0:44:06 > 0:44:08What, clean pins and a clean spoon?
0:44:09 > 0:44:11But we need to break the news to Faye, really.
0:44:11 > 0:44:13It might be worth bringing Faye across.
0:44:15 > 0:44:18We've had two members of staff in Faye's presence
0:44:18 > 0:44:21to go and facilitate the search of the bedroom,
0:44:21 > 0:44:25and already we've uncovered a needle, spoon,
0:44:25 > 0:44:28and what looks like some kind of paraphernalia
0:44:28 > 0:44:30that's, erm... associated with a crack pipe.
0:44:30 > 0:44:32- BANGS ON WINDOW - What the fuck?

0:44:46 > 0:44:50You're a lying bastard. You're a lying bastard!
0:44:50 > 0:44:53Kyle was in that bedroom!
0:44:53 > 0:44:54No!
0:44:54 > 0:44:55Come on. Faye.
0:44:57 > 0:45:00FAYE SHOUTS INDISTINCTLY
0:45:01 > 0:45:03Where's Kyle? No, I'm not.
0:45:03 > 0:45:05Come here. Don't.
0:45:05 > 0:45:08FAYE SHOUTS INDISTINCTLY
0:45:08 > 0:45:10What's going to happen to Kyle?
0:45:16 > 0:45:19After such a serious breach of the rules,
0:45:19 > 0:45:22Micky is given a week's notice to leave.
0:45:22 > 0:45:25He will only be allowed to stay, and to keep Kyle,
0:45:25 > 0:45:30if he can demonstrate he can be trusted to have a second chance.
0:45:30 > 0:45:31KYLE CRIES
0:45:31 > 0:45:33I'm sorry.
0:45:33 > 0:45:38Cos I've not seen you all day, and I've missed you.

0:45:49 > 0:45:53There was something upsetting Kyle that we couldn't figure out.
0:45:53 > 0:45:58As it turns out, this happens to be coinciding with Micky's use.
0:45:58 > 0:46:00You're pooping, aren't you?
0:46:00 > 0:46:02KYLE CHATTERS
0:46:02 > 0:46:04You don't know what he's seen and what he hasn't seen,
0:46:04 > 0:46:07what he understands, what he doesn't understand,
0:46:07 > 0:46:10but a child will be able to read their parent
0:46:10 > 0:46:12better than anybody else.
0:46:12 > 0:46:15Like, with the simple raise of an eyebrow, or...
0:46:15 > 0:46:18you know, the twitch of a smile on someone's face.
0:46:18 > 0:46:22You can communicate with a child without needing words.
0:46:24 > 0:46:28The behaviour of his dad will have changed significantly,
0:46:28 > 0:46:31and if he's experienced that quite a lot in the past,
0:46:31 > 0:46:34it wouldn't take Kyle very long to put two and two together,
0:46:34 > 0:46:37and perhaps feel a little bit insecure
0:46:37 > 0:46:40about what was happening in his environment.
0:46:40 > 0:46:42Come on.
0:46:43 > 0:46:45- KYLE:- Quack, quack!

0:46:56 > 0:46:57I'm mad at myself.
0:46:57 > 0:46:59I really am disappointed in myself.
0:46:59 > 0:47:01No-one can look after Kyle like I can.
0:47:02 > 0:47:05Why on earth didn't you consider that when you were out to use,
0:47:05 > 0:47:07- that's what I can't get my head round.- Cos it's a drug.
0:47:07 > 0:47:10- It's powerful.- It is, Micky, and I know that - I've been there.
0:47:10 > 0:47:13- It's just the way it is, isn't it? - But you've come far enough now...
0:47:13 > 0:47:17You should have come far enough now to be able to control those feelings
0:47:17 > 0:47:21and those cravings, and know damn well what the consequences are.
0:47:21 > 0:47:22I know.
0:47:24 > 0:47:26So, where do we go from here, then?
0:47:26 > 0:47:28Where do you see yourself going now?
0:47:28 > 0:47:29What's the future?
0:47:29 > 0:47:31I want to stay here, and...
0:47:32 > 0:47:36..just carry on with the programme, open up more,
0:47:36 > 0:47:39talk about what's getting at me...
0:47:39 > 0:47:41and start again.
0:47:41 > 0:47:43That's what I want to do.
0:47:43 > 0:47:45So why should your funders continue to invest money in you?
0:47:45 > 0:47:48They can or they can't, I'm not bothered. They do what they want.
0:47:48 > 0:47:50I've done what I've done, they make their own...
0:47:50 > 0:47:53- If they pull your funding, you'll lose Kyle.- No, I won't.- You will.
0:47:53 > 0:47:54No, I won't - I've been told I won't.
0:47:54 > 0:47:56Well, somebody's telling you wrong.
0:47:56 > 0:47:58I let them try to see I'm standing with a knife and stabbing me.
0:47:58 > 0:47:59Well, that'll help.
0:47:59 > 0:48:04I'm not using... Part of addiction, getting better, are relapses.
0:48:04 > 0:48:06It isn't, especially in the position you're in.
0:48:06 > 0:48:11If you're a single adult, fine, get on with it, nobody's bothered.
0:48:11 > 0:48:12But you're not.
0:48:12 > 0:48:17- I know.- And that's the... absolute crucial point.
0:48:17 > 0:48:19You're NOT a single adult.
0:48:19 > 0:48:22- You've got responsibilities. - I know.
0:48:22 > 0:48:26And you're a grown-up father of a child
0:48:26 > 0:48:30that needs even more input than most children.
0:48:30 > 0:48:32And you wander off and use?
0:48:35 > 0:48:37What if you'd have died in that underpass?
0:48:40 > 0:48:42You don't think that's a possibility?
0:48:42 > 0:48:44You don't know what the gear's like round here.
0:48:46 > 0:48:49You might have got a right... Really good, strong batch.
0:48:50 > 0:48:53You've not used for months.
0:48:53 > 0:48:55"So, Kyle, what happened to your dad?"
0:48:59 > 0:49:00I'm sorry.
0:49:01 > 0:49:02Thank you.
0:49:02 > 0:49:04I was quite upset.
0:49:06 > 0:49:09- We'll leave it there. No doubt we'll pick it up again.- Mmm.
0:49:14 > 0:49:18It gets on my nerves when people think, "Oh, it just happened to me."
0:49:18 > 0:49:23It doesn't just happen - you have to put yourself there for it to happen.
0:49:23 > 0:49:28You don't trip up and accidentally inject yourself in the groin.
0:49:29 > 0:49:31You know, he's made that decision to do that.
0:49:31 > 0:49:32A really dangerous decision.
0:49:32 > 0:49:35He didn't even have the brains to just smoke it.
0:49:35 > 0:49:38He's gone straight back to how he used to use before.
0:49:39 > 0:49:43It does make... It makes me really... Really quite angry.
0:49:46 > 0:49:50Leave me alone! I've got too many on me head!
0:49:50 > 0:49:52Faye is still refusing the offer of a place
0:49:52 > 0:49:56at Phoenix's nearby adult-only rehab.
0:49:56 > 0:49:59I'm not going up there to people who I used to use with
0:49:59 > 0:50:01and I used to deal to.
0:50:01 > 0:50:02I may as well go home.
0:50:02 > 0:50:06There's people there from my town who I used to use with.
0:50:06 > 0:50:08There's somebody up there who I used to be with.
0:50:08 > 0:50:10No!
0:50:10 > 0:50:13For God's sake, you want me to get rid of people from my past,
0:50:13 > 0:50:15but you want me to live with them.
0:50:15 > 0:50:18No, what happening is another option is being given to you,
0:50:18 > 0:50:22and it's the difference between embracing that, or going home,
0:50:22 > 0:50:25and putting yourself in a really vulnerable position.
0:50:25 > 0:50:27If I use, I lose Micky and Kyle!
0:50:27 > 0:50:29I've got something to fight for.
0:50:29 > 0:50:32I'd rather fight for it outside, and get my health problems looked at,
0:50:32 > 0:50:36and get medically looked at, and get treated for my pain,
0:50:36 > 0:50:40than... than stay in here, and be in pain all the time.
0:50:45 > 0:50:47If Faye leaves,
0:50:47 > 0:50:50the concern is that she could easily resort to using heroin.
0:50:50 > 0:50:53We need to really think about harm reduction.
0:50:54 > 0:50:56So, you know what the dangers are, aren't you, around drugs?
0:50:56 > 0:50:58Oh, yeah, I'm not stupid.
0:50:58 > 0:51:01OK, so how are you going to implement those risks?
0:51:01 > 0:51:02Not use.
0:51:02 > 0:51:04But what if you DO use?
0:51:04 > 0:51:06- What will you do? - I'll use with somebody else.
0:51:06 > 0:51:08And how will you use?
0:51:08 > 0:51:09Smoke it.
0:51:09 > 0:51:10Will you do that?
0:51:10 > 0:51:12- Yeah.- Promise me.- I will.
0:51:12 > 0:51:14Cos you know you're really susceptible at the moment
0:51:14 > 0:51:16to overdose, aren't you?
0:51:16 > 0:51:17Yeah, I know.
0:51:17 > 0:51:19Seriously, Faye, don't just nod your head at me -
0:51:19 > 0:51:20it's really serious.
0:51:20 > 0:51:23- Yeah, I know.- OK. So watch what you're doing.
0:51:23 > 0:51:28- If you do decide to use...- Yeah. - ..that's your prerogative, but...
0:51:28 > 0:51:29just make sure you use safely.
0:51:29 > 0:51:31- Yeah.- All right.- OK.
0:51:33 > 0:51:36With her mind made up, Faye has to say goodbye to Kyle.
0:51:41 > 0:51:44She's going back home, and will stay with old friends.
0:51:49 > 0:51:51- TEARFULLY:- I were crying when I went.
0:51:53 > 0:51:55SHE SOBS
0:51:55 > 0:51:57I'm sorry.
0:51:58 > 0:52:01You're not going to leave me, are you?
0:52:01 > 0:52:03- Eh?- No.
0:52:04 > 0:52:07- I love you.- I love you, too.
0:52:07 > 0:52:08SHE SOBS
0:52:12 > 0:52:14- Take care of yourself.- All right.
0:52:24 > 0:52:25I hope she don't use.
0:52:27 > 0:52:29- Only time will tell.- Yeah.
0:52:30 > 0:52:33She's going back to that house, dealer's across the road.
0:52:33 > 0:52:36Dealer's across the road from our house, well, down the road.
0:52:36 > 0:52:37Up the road, sorry.
0:52:37 > 0:52:39Dealer's in my house, I want to go home!
0:52:39 > 0:52:42THEY LAUGH
0:52:49 > 0:52:53And this little baby is the one I love the best.
0:52:53 > 0:52:56Micky has been given a reprieve.
0:52:56 > 0:52:59He can stay in rehab with Kyle.
0:52:59 > 0:53:02And he's been granted an extension to make up for lost time
0:53:02 > 0:53:04caused by Faye's illness.
0:53:05 > 0:53:08The final stage of treatment involves looking back,
0:53:08 > 0:53:12and facing the consequences of past mistakes.
0:53:12 > 0:53:14So, what about Kyle?
0:53:14 > 0:53:15Before I come in here,
0:53:15 > 0:53:20health professionals were saying he's got traits of autism,
0:53:20 > 0:53:22and stuff like that, or learning difficulties, and that.
0:53:22 > 0:53:25I'm going, "Nah, man, Kyle's Kyle.
0:53:25 > 0:53:27"He's the way he is. There's nowt wrong with him."
0:53:27 > 0:53:29Cos that's all I had known, innit?
0:53:29 > 0:53:30You know.
0:53:30 > 0:53:34But I have thought, is the lifestyle we used to lead...
0:53:34 > 0:53:36Did that contribute to him being like this?
0:53:36 > 0:53:39And after I had my lapse...
0:53:40 > 0:53:43..you know, Kyle was up for hours that night.
0:53:43 > 0:53:45He must have known that I wasn't myself,
0:53:45 > 0:53:48and I couldn't get him back to sleep for hours.
0:53:48 > 0:53:50Do you know I could have died that night?
0:53:50 > 0:53:55And that's when I realised, what we used to do DID affect him.
0:53:55 > 0:53:57It did. I might not have thought it or known it at the minute,
0:53:57 > 0:53:59but it did.
0:53:59 > 0:54:01Just look at that, what I did, that one lapse.
0:54:01 > 0:54:04Cos he's very tuned into his emotions, Kyle is,
0:54:04 > 0:54:07and he would have been feeling that I wasn't right,
0:54:07 > 0:54:09so that's why he were like that.
0:54:09 > 0:54:11And that ain't going to happen again.
0:54:12 > 0:54:14# Old MacDonald had a farm
0:54:16 > 0:54:18# Ee-ey-ee-ey-oh
0:54:18 > 0:54:20# Ee-ey-ee-ey-oh
0:54:20 > 0:54:24- Good boy! So clever! - # Ee-ey-ee-ey-oh
0:54:24 > 0:54:27# And on that farm they had some ducks... #
0:54:27 > 0:54:30Verbally, Kyle is progressing quite rapidly, it seems.
0:54:30 > 0:54:33# Ee-ay-ee-ay-oh! #
0:54:33 > 0:54:35We're seeing it in his development every day,
0:54:35 > 0:54:38that there's so much positivity coming out of Micky and Kyle.
0:54:38 > 0:54:39Buh-buh-boo!
0:54:39 > 0:54:41Boo! Whoo-hoo-hoo!
0:54:41 > 0:54:43It's just lovely to see them both blossoming,
0:54:43 > 0:54:46because they're obviously, like, rubbing off on each other,
0:54:46 > 0:54:48and it's just such a lovely bond, and a lovely friendship
0:54:48 > 0:54:51that they've got going on. It's...
0:54:51 > 0:54:54It's just kind of what you want to see, really, at this point.
0:54:54 > 0:54:57Night-night, everybody.
0:54:57 > 0:55:00It's Micky and Kyle's last night in the house.
0:55:00 > 0:55:02Night-night, my Kyle.
0:55:02 > 0:55:04I love you.
0:55:06 > 0:55:08Night-night, Igglepiggle.
0:55:08 > 0:55:10When I kind of think back to our...
0:55:10 > 0:55:12The very first time that I kind of met you,
0:55:12 > 0:55:14and had conversations with you...
0:55:15 > 0:55:18..it was even touch and go whether you would ever get here
0:55:18 > 0:55:21in the first place, and then kind of moving forward...
0:55:22 > 0:55:25..I couldn't be prouder and happier to see you sat here today,
