0:00:02 > 0:00:08This programme contains some strong language

0:00:08 > 0:00:10Well done, you.

0:00:10 > 0:00:11Behind every new mum...

0:00:11 > 0:00:13HE BELCHES

0:00:13 > 0:00:14..is a new dad.

0:00:15 > 0:00:17That is disgusting.

0:00:17 > 0:00:21Two thirds of new fathers feel useless during the pregnancy...

0:00:21 > 0:00:24All we're good for is just putting it in there.

0:00:24 > 0:00:27..and nearly half feel unprepared for the birth.

0:00:27 > 0:00:31Let's not think about it cos that makes it worse.

0:00:31 > 0:00:34But all that is about to change.

0:00:34 > 0:00:37I'm not ready for this. No, seriously.

0:00:38 > 0:00:41Under the watchful eye of experienced midwives...

0:00:41 > 0:00:42This is harder than it looks.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45Think it's easy for her having a baby?

0:00:45 > 0:00:48..these first-time fathers are going on a crash course.

0:00:50 > 0:00:51Get this baby out.

0:00:52 > 0:00:54They'll be stretched to their limits...

0:00:54 > 0:00:58It's really uncomfy. In fact, it's very painful.

0:00:58 > 0:01:01..to try to become the perfect birthing partner.

0:01:01 > 0:01:03Better go, she's calling me.

0:01:03 > 0:01:05There you are.

0:01:05 > 0:01:07With each other for moral support...

0:01:07 > 0:01:08God.

0:01:08 > 0:01:10That's scarred me for life.

0:01:10 > 0:01:14..they'll get closer to the delivery action than they'd ever imagined.

0:01:14 > 0:01:15Spread 'em.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20But when push comes to shove...

0:01:20 > 0:01:21I'm here, I'm here, I'm here.

0:01:21 > 0:01:23..will these dads deliver?

0:01:23 > 0:01:25I'm shitting myself.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33This week, two dads-to-be in Portsmouth are both battling

0:01:33 > 0:01:38to get to grips with childbirth for very different reasons.

0:01:38 > 0:01:43In a month's time, 25-year-old football fanatic Shane is expecting

0:01:43 > 0:01:47with girlfriend Lauren, who has twins from a previous relationship.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50When the sonographer said, "I've got some news, it's a boy,"

0:01:50 > 0:01:54he did this little "yeah" punch. Like, "Get in there."

0:01:54 > 0:01:55And then cried like a baby.

0:01:56 > 0:02:02An electrician by trade, Shane is wired up to be in charge.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04I like to be in control.

0:02:04 > 0:02:05- You got your toothbrush?- Yeah.

0:02:05 > 0:02:07For everything.

0:02:07 > 0:02:08Toothpaste?

0:02:08 > 0:02:10You make that sound like it's a bad thing.

0:02:10 > 0:02:11How about Luca?

0:02:12 > 0:02:14No, I don't like Luca.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18If I try and say something to him, he'll just sort of palm it off

0:02:18 > 0:02:20cos he's always right and I'm always wrong.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22These are Shane's favourite shoes.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25No, they're not. He is not wearing them.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28They shouldn't even be in the wardrobe. Sorry.

0:02:28 > 0:02:31And not only is he a control freak, Shane is competitive too.

0:02:32 > 0:02:34Did you cut the cord?

0:02:34 > 0:02:37Yeah. Yeah.

0:02:37 > 0:02:38Not to be outdone,

0:02:38 > 0:02:42Shane's goal is to be more than just on the sidelines at the birth.

0:02:42 > 0:02:46Shane's aim is basically to deliver the baby.

0:02:46 > 0:02:48I think he thinks he's going to do it on his own.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50It's my son and I want to be the one to bring him in.

0:02:50 > 0:02:54Why should someone else that doesn't know her from Adam be there to

0:02:54 > 0:02:56pull the baby out?

0:02:56 > 0:02:59And it's not just the midwives that Shane's hoping

0:02:59 > 0:03:00to send to the subs bench.

0:03:00 > 0:03:04I don't want all these bloke doctors running around like...

0:03:04 > 0:03:07- Bloke doctors? - Well, no, all right.

0:03:07 > 0:03:08It is probably jealousy.

0:03:08 > 0:03:10I don't want anyone else... Do you know what I mean?

0:03:10 > 0:03:12She's my girlfriend, she's who I want to...

0:03:12 > 0:03:14I wouldn't want another male seeing that.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17If you go to the doctor's with a problem, you don't go to see

0:03:17 > 0:03:19- a male doctor, you see a woman doctor.- Right, so either

0:03:19 > 0:03:21I'm going to die or a man has to stick his hand up my bits.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24- All right, yeah, let's leave it there.- There you go, then.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27There's just one big flaw with Shane's

0:03:27 > 0:03:29ambition to deliver his own baby.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32I'm not even going to lie. I don't know how...

0:03:32 > 0:03:34I know nothing about what's going to happen.

0:03:34 > 0:03:35You put it on backwards.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37He just thinks this pretty little baby comes out,

0:03:37 > 0:03:40probably dressed in a cute, blue Baby-gro.

0:03:40 > 0:03:42See, I'm having a mare here already.

0:03:44 > 0:03:48While Shane wants to be the don of the delivery room, across town

0:03:48 > 0:03:51another daddy disaster is brewing.

0:03:51 > 0:03:5426-year-old Martyn is king of the kitchen.

0:03:55 > 0:03:59Can't serve that. Get another one on, plus another garnish, yeah.

0:03:59 > 0:04:01I go to work to get a job done, you know

0:04:01 > 0:04:04what I mean? And I like to have things done properly.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07While he may be a grafter in the kitchen, Martyn refuses to

0:04:07 > 0:04:10put in a shift when it comes to his home life.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14I don't take much too serious.

0:04:14 > 0:04:16We play games and we drink beer,

0:04:16 > 0:04:18this is your responsibility as a man.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21Apart from Xbox, I take that quite seriously.

0:04:21 > 0:04:23But, apart from that...

0:04:23 > 0:04:26That's all about to change as girlfriend Holly's

0:04:26 > 0:04:27expecting his baby.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30But Martyn's refusing to keep his eye on the target.

0:04:30 > 0:04:35When it comes to important things, like the baby, etc, coming,

0:04:35 > 0:04:37he needs a bit of guidance.

0:04:40 > 0:04:46I don't think he's thought about the actual labour, have you?

0:04:46 > 0:04:47No.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53This is to take milk out your tits and that?

0:04:53 > 0:04:56I didn't know if the waters breaking, if that was just

0:04:56 > 0:04:58something that happened on TV, if that was actually real.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01But apparently it's real, innit?

0:05:01 > 0:05:04Holly's worried Martyn's scared to face up to

0:05:04 > 0:05:06the reality of becoming a dad.

0:05:06 > 0:05:08For him, ignorance is bliss.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11What you don't know can't hurt you. The less I know, the better.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14Just bury my head in the sand and just carry on like normal,

0:05:14 > 0:05:17you know what I mean? Keep calm and carry on.

0:05:17 > 0:05:20I need to bring a bit of what he's like in work to how

0:05:20 > 0:05:22he is with the pregnancy.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25I don't think Holly expects anything of me.

0:05:26 > 0:05:29Well, unless I've got that wrong.

0:05:30 > 0:05:32And he needs to be strong, he needs to be strong for me as well

0:05:32 > 0:05:36cos obviously it's my first time as well and obviously I'm scared.

0:05:36 > 0:05:41If I was to go into labour now, I think he would be an absolute wreck.

0:05:44 > 0:05:46So, one daddy-to-be who's

0:05:46 > 0:05:50so hands-on he thinks he can deliver his own baby,

0:05:50 > 0:05:54and another who's so hands-off, he's running a mile.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57And both completely clueless about birth.

0:05:58 > 0:05:59But these two aren't alone.

0:06:01 > 0:06:05A new BBC Three poll found that nearly half of young dads felt

0:06:05 > 0:06:06unprepared for the birth.

0:06:07 > 0:06:11So we've called in expert midwives at Queen Alexandra Hospital

0:06:11 > 0:06:16in Portsmouth to try to transform these clueless lads into super dads

0:06:16 > 0:06:19in the delivery room in just four weeks.

0:06:20 > 0:06:24Martyn is going to be whipped into shape by midwife Isla Campbell,

0:06:24 > 0:06:27who's delivered over 100 babies.

0:06:27 > 0:06:28Dads struggle with pregnancy

0:06:28 > 0:06:30cos obviously it's not them going through it.

0:06:30 > 0:06:32Especially when it's their first.

0:06:32 > 0:06:34So as much as they're excited about the birth of the baby

0:06:34 > 0:06:37and, you know, becoming a new father they're not having all these

0:06:37 > 0:06:40physical changes that reminds them every minute of every day

0:06:40 > 0:06:43of the change that's about to take place in their life.

0:06:44 > 0:06:47First things first, Isla wants to find out if chef Martyn

0:06:47 > 0:06:51knows his onions when it comes to Holly's labour and the birth.

0:06:51 > 0:06:53- Hi.- Hello.- Hi, Martyn. - Hello.- Hi, I'm Isla...

0:06:53 > 0:06:56- Nice to meet you.- I'm the midwife. Hiya. How you doing?- Good.

0:06:56 > 0:06:58Good? How far along is Holly?

0:06:58 > 0:07:01Er...eight months?

0:07:01 > 0:07:03Eight months. OK. Do you know that in weeks?

0:07:03 > 0:07:05Should be about 34 or 35.

0:07:05 > 0:07:07- Yeah, about 34 or something.- OK.

0:07:07 > 0:07:10Any idea what the signs of labour are, the initial signs?

0:07:10 > 0:07:11She starts screaming.

0:07:11 > 0:07:14That's probably more of a later-on sign I'd say.

0:07:14 > 0:07:18When Holly goes into labour, what do you think your role will be?

0:07:21 > 0:07:24I don't know, just...turn up?

0:07:24 > 0:07:28Have you got any ideas of how you're going to help Holly with the pain?

0:07:28 > 0:07:30No. Cups of tea.

0:07:30 > 0:07:33Yeah, how were you planning on preparing yourself for the birth?

0:07:33 > 0:07:39I wasn't preparing. I just thought you sort of show up and...

0:07:39 > 0:07:42- OK.- So do you actually expect anything from me?

0:07:42 > 0:07:45Say if me and Holly walked in here now, would you expect me

0:07:45 > 0:07:47- to do something? - Absolutely, definitely.

0:07:47 > 0:07:48What would you expect me to do?

0:07:48 > 0:07:50We'd expect you to be giving her emotional support.

0:07:50 > 0:07:53Show her you know what you're talking about, she'll have more

0:07:53 > 0:07:56faith in you. Especially at home, and you're trying to keep her home.

0:07:56 > 0:07:58If you say, "The contractions aren't four in ten yet,

0:07:58 > 0:08:00"we want to wait until we've got four in ten minutes

0:08:00 > 0:08:02"or three good contractions..."

0:08:02 > 0:08:04I think she'd pass out if I said that.

0:08:05 > 0:08:07I think just saying that you're just going to turn up

0:08:07 > 0:08:10when your partner's in labour is maybe a little bit naive.

0:08:10 > 0:08:13Not really understanding actually what it entails.

0:08:16 > 0:08:20To make up for lost time, Isla goes back to basics.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23So, I think carrying that around, plus the placenta,

0:08:23 > 0:08:25plus all the waters and everything...

0:08:25 > 0:08:28- So she's 34 so she's bigger than that?- Yeah.

0:08:28 > 0:08:32After the session today, I know that I've got miles to go.

0:08:32 > 0:08:34The size of the hole compared to the size of the baby.

0:08:34 > 0:08:37More than I thought that I needed and I thought I needed a lot.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40And they just clamp the cord and then this bit

0:08:40 > 0:08:41and the cord stays attached.

0:08:41 > 0:08:44And then normally between about sort of five days

0:08:44 > 0:08:47to sort of 12 days it'll fall off.

0:08:47 > 0:08:49- We'll have baby for five days with that on it?- Yeah.

0:08:49 > 0:08:50Minimum.

0:08:52 > 0:08:55Let's not think about it, cos... cos that makes it worse.

0:08:58 > 0:09:03If Isla faces a hard task teaching Martyn the daddy basics...

0:09:03 > 0:09:04OK, um...

0:09:06 > 0:09:09..her colleague, midwife Emma Kellagher,

0:09:09 > 0:09:11has an equally tough challenge.

0:09:11 > 0:09:14She's taking on control freak Shane.

0:09:14 > 0:09:15GURGLING

0:09:15 > 0:09:17I'm sorry. I know, I know.

0:09:17 > 0:09:19Dads do have a huge role, particularly

0:09:19 > 0:09:23when they're in labour, and we obviously support them as well.

0:09:24 > 0:09:27And support them in supporting their partners - getting them

0:09:27 > 0:09:30involved in their care as much as possible.

0:09:30 > 0:09:34But, at the birth, Shane doesn't want to play a supporting role,

0:09:34 > 0:09:36he's hoping to run the show.

0:09:36 > 0:09:39I want to be able to help deliver him.

0:09:39 > 0:09:42And what do you perceive that to be, to deliver the baby?

0:09:42 > 0:09:44Just when he's coming out, you know, like, hold him,

0:09:44 > 0:09:47- support him as he's coming out.- Hold him when he's born and cut the cord.

0:09:47 > 0:09:50- Supporting him when he's coming out. - As midwives, we've got a legal

0:09:50 > 0:09:53obligation to make sure mum and baby are safe and deliver them.

0:09:53 > 0:09:55The actual, as it's sort of, being born, we actually,

0:09:55 > 0:09:58we have to do that ourselves.

0:09:58 > 0:10:01But overprotective Shane's determined to be the only

0:10:01 > 0:10:03man in the delivery room.

0:10:03 > 0:10:06The majority of our doctors are males.

0:10:06 > 0:10:09They don't look it as a sexual thing. It's a...

0:10:09 > 0:10:13Yeah, I guess... I know it's their job,

0:10:13 > 0:10:16- it's just a private area, isn't it? - A baby's got to be born,

0:10:16 > 0:10:19if you like, this is the road it's got to come out of.

0:10:19 > 0:10:21Obviously if I got more of an understanding of what

0:10:21 > 0:10:22- they were doing...- Yeah.

0:10:22 > 0:10:25..then I supposed I'd be more relaxed about the situation.

0:10:27 > 0:10:30To help Shane get over his hang-ups, Emma wants him

0:10:30 > 0:10:34to look in a different light at the coalface of childbirth.

0:10:36 > 0:10:38I've got some vaginas to show you.

0:10:38 > 0:10:40I can't touch any of them. That's not normal.

0:10:43 > 0:10:47Emma wants Shane to see vaginas in a medical, not a sexual, way.

0:10:47 > 0:10:49So if you just touch the top of her tummy, you don't

0:10:49 > 0:10:52- have to touch that bit. - That's all I'm touching.

0:10:52 > 0:10:55And you can't feel any sort of lumpy bits or anything.

0:10:55 > 0:10:59To demonstrate a medical examination, Emma wants Shane to

0:10:59 > 0:11:03take the plunge and find the cervix - the opening to the womb.

0:11:03 > 0:11:06- Go on, give it a go. - Oh, I can't do that.

0:11:06 > 0:11:09You can. Honestly, it's not lifelike, it's fine.

0:11:09 > 0:11:12- This don't count as cheating, does it?- No, no, no.

0:11:12 > 0:11:15I'm not going to get into... Oh, that's disgusting.

0:11:15 > 0:11:17Go right to the back. You need to feel the cervix

0:11:17 > 0:11:18and the little dip in it.

0:11:18 > 0:11:22Yeah, that's dis... That's vile.

0:11:22 > 0:11:24So you've got Emma the midwife stood next to me

0:11:24 > 0:11:27and she's trying to make me stick my fingers inside this vagina

0:11:27 > 0:11:31and feel for things and that. It's just not natural.

0:11:31 > 0:11:33We had a giggle with the models, but you just don't

0:11:33 > 0:11:36look at it in that way, whether you're a male or female.

0:11:36 > 0:11:37Like, I can't stop laughing at it,

0:11:37 > 0:11:39but obviously they see them day in, day out.

0:11:39 > 0:11:42You don't see it in a sexual way or a funny way or anything,

0:11:42 > 0:11:45it's just when you're looking after somebody, it's the birth canal,

0:11:45 > 0:11:47the baby's got to come out and that's where it comes out.

0:11:47 > 0:11:49You look at it completely differently.

0:11:49 > 0:11:51On that side of things I can understand, but can we...?

0:11:51 > 0:11:53I just don't... It keeps, like, looking at me.

0:11:53 > 0:11:56I swear, it's not normal.

0:11:56 > 0:11:59- It's a good shape, though, isn't it? She's trains hard.- Good figure.- Yeah.

0:12:01 > 0:12:02Oh, wow.

0:12:05 > 0:12:09After the shock of his deep explorations...

0:12:09 > 0:12:10KNOCKING

0:12:12 > 0:12:16..Shane has a confession for Lauren.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19- Down.- Get down, get down. - What did you do? What did you do?

0:12:19 > 0:12:21- HE LAUGHS - I don't know why you're laughing.

0:12:21 > 0:12:24- This doesn't count as cheating, OK? - OK.

0:12:24 > 0:12:25They brought out...

0:12:25 > 0:12:28Basically...it was a fan...

0:12:28 > 0:12:30it was a fanny. Yeah.

0:12:30 > 0:12:33- Vagina. Did you get excited, Shane? - No, of course not.

0:12:33 > 0:12:35- I couldn't stop laughing. - Did you get all nervous?

0:12:35 > 0:12:40- Yeah, it was weird having to stick my fingers in another...- Ugh.

0:12:40 > 0:12:41..noo-noo.

0:12:41 > 0:12:43I didn't look at it in that sort of way.

0:12:43 > 0:12:46I can now see they wouldn't. They are literally there to...

0:12:46 > 0:12:49Yeah, it's their job, isn't it?

0:12:49 > 0:12:51'Shane's learnt a lot from that session.'

0:12:51 > 0:12:53He was really concerned about the doctors,

0:12:53 > 0:12:55male doctors having a look in that area.

0:12:55 > 0:12:58I think he's realised that the doctor doesn't want to

0:12:58 > 0:13:01look at me in a sexual way, he's doing his job.

0:13:01 > 0:13:03Well, it was a nice looking one.

0:13:03 > 0:13:06'I think he still wants to be in control about the whole'

0:13:06 > 0:13:09labour thing cos he likes to be the main man.

0:13:11 > 0:13:15While Shane's still determined to be the don of the delivery room,

0:13:15 > 0:13:19Martyn is taking baby steps to understanding the basics.

0:13:21 > 0:13:22You all right?

0:13:22 > 0:13:27And he's going to impress girlfriend Holly with his new knowledge.

0:13:27 > 0:13:31- Do you know what a contraction is now?- Yeah, er, yeah.- Yeah.

0:13:31 > 0:13:36It's basically it's your... Not 100% sure.

0:13:36 > 0:13:40Martyn has still got a long way to go, but it's a good starting point

0:13:40 > 0:13:44for him and he wants to learn more now, I can see that in his eyes.

0:13:44 > 0:13:46I can see that he wants to learn a little bit more.

0:13:49 > 0:13:53With both their babies due within a few days of each other,

0:13:53 > 0:13:56Shane and Martyn have a lot to talk about.

0:13:56 > 0:13:58- Hi, you all right? I'm Shane. - Martyn, mate. You all right?

0:13:58 > 0:14:03- When's your missus due? - 11th.- September?- Yeah.

0:14:03 > 0:14:04That's four days before us.

0:14:04 > 0:14:07I've got it all mapped out in my head exactly what'll happen.

0:14:07 > 0:14:09I'll be at work, she's going to give me a call.

0:14:09 > 0:14:12Phone her a taxi. Meet her up there. Pop the baby out. Come home.

0:14:14 > 0:14:18To prepare them for the miracle of childbirth, the midwives have

0:14:18 > 0:14:21given these dads-to-be a video of real labour.

0:14:21 > 0:14:22This ain't the start of Karate Kid 2.

0:14:22 > 0:14:25No, it's definitely not, it's got "birth" writ on it.

0:14:25 > 0:14:26SHRIEKING

0:14:28 > 0:14:29Oh, wow.

0:14:29 > 0:14:31SHRIEKING CONTINUES

0:14:32 > 0:14:34BLOOD-CURDLING SCREAM

0:14:35 > 0:14:37Didn't want the pizza anyway.

0:14:38 > 0:14:41- I'm trying not to look, but for some reason...- Fucking hell.

0:14:41 > 0:14:43SCREAMING

0:14:51 > 0:14:52Oh, God!

0:14:54 > 0:14:57Everyone told me it's a great experience.

0:14:57 > 0:14:58HE LAUGHS

0:15:00 > 0:15:01That was vile.

0:15:01 > 0:15:03I don't want to talk about that.

0:15:03 > 0:15:07- I actually feel traumatised. - I feel ill.- It really is vile.

0:15:14 > 0:15:17After showing signs of wanting to learn...

0:15:17 > 0:15:19He has learnt how to wear an apron.

0:15:19 > 0:15:22..it seems watching the birth video has sent Martyn

0:15:22 > 0:15:24back to where he started.

0:15:24 > 0:15:26I know what I'm doing.

0:15:26 > 0:15:30Do you know that the baby, it spits out of its arse green stuff?

0:15:30 > 0:15:33What are you actually going to do when that happens?

0:15:33 > 0:15:37I'll be like, "Holly! The baby's spitting out green stuff again."

0:15:37 > 0:15:39He's a lovely bloke, he's got a heart of gold.

0:15:39 > 0:15:40No, he's fucking not.

0:15:40 > 0:15:43- There's no need to swear, is there?- He's an idiot.

0:15:45 > 0:15:48And it's not just Martyn's mates who aren't convinced he's going

0:15:48 > 0:15:50to be ready for the birth.

0:15:52 > 0:15:55Midwife Isla has concerns he's back to

0:15:55 > 0:15:57burying his head in the sand again.

0:15:57 > 0:16:00When we first met, he had absolutely no idea what his role

0:16:00 > 0:16:03was in supporting Holly through her delivery and birth.

0:16:03 > 0:16:05Isla's cooked up a plan to show him

0:16:05 > 0:16:09he'll need to deal with unexpected situations out of his comfort zone.

0:16:09 > 0:16:12He's a sous chef here, so I want to see him take control

0:16:12 > 0:16:15and be in charge and kind of help him

0:16:15 > 0:16:18realise that he needs to have that sort of presence in the labour room.

0:16:18 > 0:16:21Cos I'm in my comfort zone here, there's nothing that sort of

0:16:21 > 0:16:24can get chucked at me that I don't think I'll be able to handle.

0:16:26 > 0:16:28OK? Yeah.

0:16:28 > 0:16:30So do you want to make me something quick and easy, maybe?

0:16:30 > 0:16:32- Do you like prawns? - Yeah, that sounds good.

0:16:35 > 0:16:37Martyn's in command when he knows the recipe.

0:16:37 > 0:16:40You're very in control of everything here. You know your stuff.

0:16:40 > 0:16:44But, unlike cooking, childbirth is unpredictable.

0:16:44 > 0:16:47Isla wants to know how Martyn will cope when, as in labour,

0:16:47 > 0:16:49the plan goes out the window.

0:16:51 > 0:16:54Actually I didn't want that, I wanted chicken pasta.

0:16:54 > 0:16:57- Do you want chicken pasta? - Yeah. I don't like prawns.

0:16:57 > 0:17:01You don't like prawns. OK.

0:17:02 > 0:17:06Martyn's keeping his cool and staying in control so far.

0:17:08 > 0:17:10I don't think I've ever cut so many onions in one morning before.

0:17:12 > 0:17:14But Isla turns the heat up.

0:17:14 > 0:17:18See if you can leave it, see how you cope with it and just watch it.

0:17:18 > 0:17:20- What, on the heat?- Yeah.

0:17:23 > 0:17:27She suspects that Martyn has a fear of being taken out of his comfort

0:17:27 > 0:17:31zone and it's holding him back from being more involved in the birth.

0:17:31 > 0:17:33- Is it painful?- A little bit.

0:17:33 > 0:17:35I've just make it for you and we're just going to let it burn.

0:17:37 > 0:17:40The fact I spend all day keeping this from happening

0:17:40 > 0:17:44and now standing here just watching it happening is...

0:17:44 > 0:17:46well, it's painful.

0:17:46 > 0:17:48I don't like it.

0:17:52 > 0:17:54I'm calm here cos things are in my control.

0:17:54 > 0:17:57I control things that happen whereas if something happens

0:17:57 > 0:17:59out of my control it's hard for me to keep calm. I'm very...

0:17:59 > 0:18:02I reckon I'll be a panicker.

0:18:02 > 0:18:04Maybe you can try and focus your control

0:18:04 > 0:18:06- on sort of coping with Holly... - Yeah.

0:18:06 > 0:18:08..by helping her with her breathing

0:18:08 > 0:18:11exercises or getting into a position that she finds comfortable.

0:18:11 > 0:18:15If I stay calm in any situation, then Holly will stay calm.

0:18:18 > 0:18:21That sounds like the perfect birth partner response.

0:18:21 > 0:18:24- We haven't got there yet, all right? - Just stay calm.

0:18:25 > 0:18:30To ram home to Martyn just how vital his role is, Isla throws him

0:18:30 > 0:18:33out of the frying pan and into the fire.

0:18:34 > 0:18:36It's a lot more... Well, not relaxing....

0:18:36 > 0:18:38WOMAN SCREAMS

0:18:38 > 0:18:41Isla has arranged for an actress to play the part of a woman

0:18:41 > 0:18:45in the early stages of labour to see how Martyn will cope.

0:18:45 > 0:18:47Just help her with some breathing exercises.

0:18:47 > 0:18:51I'm not ready for this. No, seriously.

0:18:51 > 0:18:52What do you want me to do?

0:18:52 > 0:18:57Just help me stand. Oh, that hurts so much.

0:18:57 > 0:18:58Just breathe.

0:19:01 > 0:19:05- Tell her to keep breathing, Martyn. - Keep breathing.

0:19:05 > 0:19:06'Basically I was shitting myself.

0:19:06 > 0:19:09'Just out of nowhere it was like, I was sort of shaking it was...'

0:19:09 > 0:19:11it was nerve-racking.

0:19:11 > 0:19:14SHE GASPS AND PANTS

0:19:14 > 0:19:16- Just keep calm.- OK.

0:19:16 > 0:19:17It'll be all right.

0:19:17 > 0:19:19'I dealt with that awfully.'

0:19:19 > 0:19:22I need to know more what's going on as to what I need to do,

0:19:22 > 0:19:23what's going to happen.

0:19:23 > 0:19:25- All right.- Can you help me in?

0:19:25 > 0:19:27- All right, do you want to get the other side?- Yeah, oh...

0:19:27 > 0:19:30'That's a bit of an eye-opener. I was like a rabbit in the headlights.

0:19:30 > 0:19:32'I didn't know what to do.'

0:19:32 > 0:19:34If that happened to Holly, I'd be useless.

0:19:37 > 0:19:40All right, we're going to go to the hospital now, yeah?

0:19:40 > 0:19:41Oh, I got another one coming.

0:19:41 > 0:19:45It's all right, it's all right. Keep breathing.

0:19:45 > 0:19:48'I don't expect to be responsible outside of work.

0:19:48 > 0:19:50'And that's sort of what I had to be then and I wasn't.'

0:19:50 > 0:19:51SHE WAILS

0:19:53 > 0:19:56So I need to know how to be to help everyone.

0:19:56 > 0:19:58cos I was no help to her whatsoever.

0:19:58 > 0:20:01She was sort of looking to me to help and I didn't.

0:20:01 > 0:20:03I don't want that to be Holly.

0:20:05 > 0:20:07That was a real shock for Martyn and, although it was

0:20:07 > 0:20:10an actress, it simulates how it's actually going to be like

0:20:10 > 0:20:11when Holly goes into labour

0:20:11 > 0:20:14and the sort of level of support that he's got to give

0:20:14 > 0:20:16right from her very first contraction to getting

0:20:16 > 0:20:17her in the car and being organised

0:20:17 > 0:20:20and how he'll get her to hospital to supporting her

0:20:20 > 0:20:22through the delivery and birth of this baby.

0:20:23 > 0:20:26While it's finally dawned on Martyn that he has a big part to

0:20:26 > 0:20:27play at the birth...

0:20:29 > 0:20:32..Shane still wants to make it a one-man show.

0:20:32 > 0:20:35He's seeking the advice of his dad, who helped bring Shane's

0:20:35 > 0:20:37younger brother into the world.

0:20:37 > 0:20:42So I had the top of the head and then I just pulled him out.

0:20:42 > 0:20:45- It's not a feeling like you've ever had before.- Yeah.

0:20:45 > 0:20:47But once you've had it, it is a buzz.

0:20:47 > 0:20:49I want to be able to do it, though.

0:20:49 > 0:20:53I do... I want to actually, like you said, like, hold the head

0:20:53 > 0:20:54and everything when it comes out.

0:20:54 > 0:20:59- The only advice I can give you is you need to be there for Lauren.- Hm.

0:20:59 > 0:21:06- You need to be calm for her. Cos she's not going to be calm.- Yeah.

0:21:06 > 0:21:10If she gets wound up, then it's going to put the baby in stress.

0:21:10 > 0:21:12But he'll be all right, he'll be all right.

0:21:14 > 0:21:17When it comes to it, I just want to be able to deliver the baby.

0:21:17 > 0:21:20Why should someone else get to bring my son into the world?

0:21:20 > 0:21:23Why should, why should I miss out on that chance?

0:21:31 > 0:21:33Despite his dad's words of wisdom,

0:21:33 > 0:21:37Shane's still set on taking control of his son's birth.

0:21:37 > 0:21:38What Shane wanted to do,

0:21:38 > 0:21:41he wanted to actually deliver the baby himself.

0:21:41 > 0:21:44And whilst he can be involved as much as he wants to be,

0:21:44 > 0:21:46there are limits.

0:21:46 > 0:21:49Midwife Emma has the perfect thing to give him a reality check

0:21:49 > 0:21:52and show him why he has to leave it to the experts.

0:21:54 > 0:21:56So, Shane, you'd like to deliver your own baby,

0:21:56 > 0:21:58so let's go and have a baby.

0:22:02 > 0:22:03SHANE LAUGHS

0:22:03 > 0:22:05Now this is Noelle.

0:22:05 > 0:22:07And we're going to help her have her baby today.

0:22:07 > 0:22:10I'm actually really nervous and it's just a doll.

0:22:12 > 0:22:15But Noelle isn't just a pretty face.

0:22:15 > 0:22:18She's a state-of-the-art training model for midwives.

0:22:18 > 0:22:20Controlled via computer,

0:22:20 > 0:22:25she can be programmed to demonstrate all kinds of labour scenarios.

0:22:26 > 0:22:28She does everything a normal mum would do

0:22:28 > 0:22:29when she's having a baby.

0:22:29 > 0:22:32It's actually, like, blinking and everything.

0:22:32 > 0:22:34She's blinking, breathing and is going to push a baby out.

0:22:34 > 0:22:38Minus the blood and everything, though, obviously.

0:22:38 > 0:22:39It's a very realistic model.

0:22:41 > 0:22:44Getting him to actually deliver the baby, I think, will really

0:22:44 > 0:22:48make him think, "Actually, that's not quite what I had in mind."

0:22:48 > 0:22:49NOELLE SHRIEKS

0:22:49 > 0:22:52We try and keep mums covered as much as possible, but obviously

0:22:52 > 0:22:53- when they're pushing...- Yeah.

0:22:53 > 0:22:56..we need to be able to see what we're doing.

0:22:56 > 0:22:58So if you just tell her we're going to move her legs.

0:22:58 > 0:22:59Just going to bring your legs up.

0:22:59 > 0:23:02Emma wants this exercise to show Shane why, by law,

0:23:02 > 0:23:07a qualified midwife or doctor is required to deliver his baby.

0:23:07 > 0:23:10Just keep going, go on, you're all right. Keep pushing.

0:23:10 > 0:23:12I think at the moment Shane doesn't really have an idea

0:23:12 > 0:23:15exactly what's involved in the delivery room.

0:23:15 > 0:23:18- It looks like... Oh, baby's head is coming out.- See the head now.

0:23:18 > 0:23:20- Get her to breathe now, get her to breathe.- Breathe.

0:23:20 > 0:23:22'He will really have his eyes opened

0:23:22 > 0:23:25'and I hope he will understand more what his role is going to be'

0:23:25 > 0:23:28and what mine is and that they are very different.

0:23:28 > 0:23:30That's it, keep going. Keep pushing, keep pushing.

0:23:30 > 0:23:32Big push and baby's going to come.

0:23:32 > 0:23:34- That's it.- That's it.

0:23:34 > 0:23:36But no sooner has the baby been born...

0:23:36 > 0:23:39- Give baby to mummy.- ..than something goes seriously wrong.

0:23:39 > 0:23:41Ooh, she's had a big bleed.

0:23:41 > 0:23:43Noelle is haemorrhaging badly.

0:23:43 > 0:23:46Tell you what, Shane, can you pull that red buzzer for me there,

0:23:46 > 0:23:50- just on the side there?- It's an emergency and could be fatal.

0:23:50 > 0:23:53She needs the attention of the medical team fast.

0:23:53 > 0:23:56Hi, Georgia, she's just having a PP8.

0:23:56 > 0:23:58MONITOR BEEPS

0:24:00 > 0:24:02We're going to just pop a drip in her arm,

0:24:02 > 0:24:04so we're just going to try and stop the bleeding.

0:24:09 > 0:24:13I'm actually feeling quite, like, light-headed and sick now.

0:24:13 > 0:24:14That's fine.

0:24:14 > 0:24:17'That really scared me then. It's only a doll'

0:24:17 > 0:24:19but the rushing around and everything, it made it so realistic.

0:24:19 > 0:24:22Could you get me a catheter in a minute, would you mind? Thank you.

0:24:22 > 0:24:26It's scary to know that that situation could happen with Lauren.

0:24:26 > 0:24:29Having had a baptism of fire, Shane is reassessing

0:24:29 > 0:24:32his responsibilities in the delivery room.

0:24:32 > 0:24:34I'd never in a million years expect that to happen

0:24:34 > 0:24:36and nothing I could do there, I'd be useless.

0:24:36 > 0:24:38As much as I want to help deliver,

0:24:38 > 0:24:41by me just doing the things, making sure Lauren's breathing right

0:24:41 > 0:24:44- and she's pushing at the correct times and that...- Yep.

0:24:44 > 0:24:46- ..that is still helping and still being involved.- It is.

0:24:46 > 0:24:49That role is just as important as my role.

0:24:49 > 0:24:52I think he's learnt a lot about my role as a midwife

0:24:52 > 0:24:54and he realises that actually delivering his own baby

0:24:54 > 0:24:56isn't quite what he'd like to do.

0:24:56 > 0:24:58I think he'll be a good support to Lauren

0:24:58 > 0:25:01and he'll hopefully be able to do the bits he wants to do,

0:25:01 > 0:25:03but most of all be there to support her.

0:25:10 > 0:25:13As Shane has realised his limitations...

0:25:13 > 0:25:15Two chicken curries instead, yeah?

0:25:15 > 0:25:18..chef Martyn's wised up to how much Holly will need him

0:25:18 > 0:25:20in the delivery room.

0:25:21 > 0:25:24But he's still daunted by the responsibility and, like many men,

0:25:24 > 0:25:28struggling to grasp the reality of becoming a parent.

0:25:31 > 0:25:34I think for any geezer to relate to a pregnancy,

0:25:34 > 0:25:35I think, is difficult, innit?

0:25:37 > 0:25:40I dunno what she said but Holly doesn't see me

0:25:40 > 0:25:43as a part of it at the moment, I don't think.

0:25:43 > 0:25:46I can physically feel it every day.

0:25:46 > 0:25:48In the middle of the night I will think about it

0:25:48 > 0:25:51because he'll be kicking me or whatever.

0:25:51 > 0:25:53But Martyn will be in a deep sleep,

0:25:53 > 0:25:56probably dreaming about something else.

0:25:56 > 0:25:59I need to be a part of it, cos I don't...it doesn't happen

0:25:59 > 0:26:00every day, does it?

0:26:03 > 0:26:07To help Martyn feel more connected to his baby, Isla's had a bold idea

0:26:07 > 0:26:09and invites him to a water park.

0:26:11 > 0:26:15Isla's just told me to meet her here with my swimming stuff

0:26:15 > 0:26:17and that's all I know.

0:26:17 > 0:26:21Isla wants Martyn to understand staying in control and keeping calm

0:26:21 > 0:26:25at the birth is just as important to his child as it is to Holly.

0:26:25 > 0:26:27- Hiya, Martyn.- You all right?

0:26:27 > 0:26:29- Yeah, are you?- Yeah, good.

0:26:29 > 0:26:33- Good. Recovered from last time? - Yeah, pretty much.- OK.

0:26:33 > 0:26:35So, here at the water park...

0:26:36 > 0:26:39..I just want to, in a very small way, give you an indicator as to

0:26:39 > 0:26:44the kind of experience a baby might go through on the birth process.

0:26:44 > 0:26:46- Have you got your trunks with you, Martyn?- I have indeed.

0:26:46 > 0:26:49Lovely, well, go and get changed

0:26:49 > 0:26:51- and then I'll meet you by the pool.- Lovely.

0:26:51 > 0:26:54'I brought Martyn here today to have an experience

0:26:54 > 0:26:55'which will hopefully represent'

0:26:55 > 0:26:59how stressed a baby can feel during the labour and birth experience.

0:26:59 > 0:27:02Going to take him through a situation where he's feeling nice

0:27:02 > 0:27:04and calm to quite a stressed environment

0:27:04 > 0:27:08and that's representing a little bit of what birth's like for babies.

0:27:08 > 0:27:11Hopefully, this'll teach Martyn how important his role is in labour

0:27:11 > 0:27:13in keeping Holly nice and calm and hopefully

0:27:13 > 0:27:17that'll have a knock-on effect in keeping baby nice and calm.

0:27:17 > 0:27:21To give Martyn a sense of panic a baby can feel during labour,

0:27:21 > 0:27:23she's going to send him down a water slide

0:27:23 > 0:27:27but with something that's going to take all the fun out of it.

0:27:27 > 0:27:30What I want you to do is wear these goggles.

0:27:31 > 0:27:33They're a little bit blacked out.

0:27:33 > 0:27:37So it'll just give you more of an idea of how disorientating it is

0:27:37 > 0:27:39- for a baby, all right?- Yeah.

0:27:39 > 0:27:40- So off you go.- Right.

0:27:43 > 0:27:45- I literally can't see a thing. - That's great!

0:27:48 > 0:27:50- Go, yeah?- Yeah, go!

0:28:26 > 0:28:28You literally can't see anything.

0:28:31 > 0:28:33That's horrible with the glasses on.

0:28:33 > 0:28:36I can imagine it being a lot more fun without it.

0:28:36 > 0:28:38I understand what Isla's trying to say.

0:28:38 > 0:28:41Then you come out and it's pitch black, you can't see where you are,

0:28:41 > 0:28:42you don't know what's going on,

0:28:42 > 0:28:45and I'm an adult, do you know what I mean?

0:28:45 > 0:28:47And if you're a little baby, you don't know where,

0:28:47 > 0:28:52first time out in the world, in the pitch black,

0:28:52 > 0:28:54not knowing where you are...

0:28:54 > 0:28:56You could've helped me there!

0:29:00 > 0:29:02With both dads now on track

0:29:02 > 0:29:05and with just days till their due date,

0:29:05 > 0:29:07it's time to cram in some last-minute revision.

0:29:07 > 0:29:10Martyn's come a very long way from the beginning,

0:29:10 > 0:29:12from coming from not knowing what a contraction was,

0:29:12 > 0:29:15to coming home and telling me all sorts of things.

0:29:15 > 0:29:18He's even telling me stuff that I don't even know.

0:29:19 > 0:29:23Question number two - what are Braxton Hicks?

0:29:24 > 0:29:27They're pre-birth contractions.

0:29:27 > 0:29:31'Anything I can do to make it easier for her is needed.

0:29:31 > 0:29:33'Not just a, "There you go,'

0:29:33 > 0:29:36"get on with it," and sit in the corner and play on my phone,

0:29:36 > 0:29:38which is what I thought I was going to have to do.

0:29:38 > 0:29:42After a slow start, they are both making real progress.

0:29:42 > 0:29:46Giving birth - it will also put pressure on your rectum,

0:29:46 > 0:29:48which can result in involuntary bowel movements.

0:29:48 > 0:29:52You're in some serious trouble, you've got some of them already.

0:29:52 > 0:29:54Compared to how he was four weeks ago when we met,

0:29:54 > 0:29:56he's come on leaps and bounds.

0:29:58 > 0:30:01I thought the more you knew, like, the more worried I'd be.

0:30:01 > 0:30:03It's not, is it? It's the opposite.

0:30:03 > 0:30:06The more I know, the more confident I am it's all going to go fine.

0:30:06 > 0:30:08If you're not as worried as much,

0:30:08 > 0:30:10then I'm not going to be as worried as much.

0:30:10 > 0:30:15But will they manage to remember everything when the labour starts?

0:30:16 > 0:30:19For Martyn, it's already begun.

0:30:19 > 0:30:22Overnight, Holly's barely slept

0:30:22 > 0:30:24because she started to have painful contractions.

0:30:24 > 0:30:27Yeah, she hasn't got any sleep all night.

0:30:27 > 0:30:31Collectively, I think she's had four hours in the last three days.

0:30:31 > 0:30:35It's still every six minutes, so it's, like, they told us that

0:30:35 > 0:30:38until they get closer together,

0:30:38 > 0:30:40we shouldn't be... we can't really do anything.

0:30:40 > 0:30:42But they're a lot more stronger.

0:30:42 > 0:30:46Although Holly's contractions aren't getting closer together,

0:30:46 > 0:30:50the pain is intensifying, so she calls the hospital to see

0:30:50 > 0:30:52if there is cause for concern.

0:30:52 > 0:30:56Hiya, um, I have rung up already today. My contractions,

0:30:56 > 0:30:59they said come in, ring back if they're closer together.

0:30:59 > 0:31:02They're actually further apart but a lot stronger.

0:31:04 > 0:31:06A midwife has asked Holly to come in.

0:31:06 > 0:31:08All ready to rumble, babes.

0:31:08 > 0:31:11And Martyn makes sure he's there to comfort her.

0:31:11 > 0:31:13Here you are.

0:31:21 > 0:31:24- Hello, Holly.- Hello.- Come through.

0:31:24 > 0:31:27- You look tired.- I'm shattered.

0:31:27 > 0:31:30So how often are they coming now?

0:31:30 > 0:31:32- About every six...- Five, six minutes.

0:31:32 > 0:31:36- Is it all right to have a feel of your tummy?- Yeah, yeah.

0:31:36 > 0:31:39- So these are every sort of five to six minutes, then?- Yeah.

0:31:39 > 0:31:44Sometimes with a first baby, the early stages of labour can take...

0:31:44 > 0:31:47- Longer.- Yeah. You're not always talking several hours,

0:31:47 > 0:31:50- sometimes you are talking of several days.- Yeah.- OK?

0:31:50 > 0:31:54I think your best place at the moment is home.

0:31:54 > 0:31:56There's no reason for you to be in yet.

0:31:56 > 0:31:59You're managing beautifully with the breathing through

0:31:59 > 0:32:00with your contractions.

0:32:00 > 0:32:04I would probably hope that maybe towards the end of today

0:32:04 > 0:32:05that you'll be phoning,

0:32:05 > 0:32:08saying, "They're coming every three to four minutes,

0:32:08 > 0:32:10"I need to come in for pain relief."

0:32:10 > 0:32:13They'll have to return home and wait for the labour to begin.

0:32:13 > 0:32:17But can Martyn continue to keep it together when he's alone with Holly?

0:32:29 > 0:32:33Holly might be heading home, but Lauren is on her way in.

0:32:33 > 0:32:34She's reached her due date,

0:32:34 > 0:32:38so is having a scan to see if the baby's head is engaged.

0:32:39 > 0:32:43So we're basically measuring the full...

0:32:46 > 0:32:49At home, Shane is putting the finishing touches

0:32:49 > 0:32:52to a very personal project he's spent weeks on.

0:32:53 > 0:32:56The transfer says, "Always kiss me good night."

0:32:57 > 0:33:00But whether or not it actually goes on right, I doubt very much.

0:33:09 > 0:33:11I wanted to do this room all myself.

0:33:11 > 0:33:15Basically, it's probably the only way I feel I could've bonded with him.

0:33:15 > 0:33:19Obviously, Lauren's had nine months of him growing inside her,

0:33:19 > 0:33:22so she's already got, like, a big bond with him already.

0:33:24 > 0:33:27Everything else I can't be in control of. It's sort of

0:33:27 > 0:33:28cos he's growing inside Lauren.

0:33:28 > 0:33:34But this is kind of like the only maybe physical sort of input

0:33:34 > 0:33:35I could have had towards...

0:33:36 > 0:33:38..before he's been born.

0:33:39 > 0:33:42This is all my input. There's no-one saying,

0:33:42 > 0:33:44"Oh, do it this way, do it that way."

0:33:44 > 0:33:45One part of the story to tell him

0:33:45 > 0:33:48when he's a little bit older that I decorated his first bedroom.

0:33:48 > 0:33:50MUSIC: 21 by Delilah

0:33:50 > 0:33:52# I'll wait for you to waken

0:33:52 > 0:33:56# I'll find the words to say

0:33:56 > 0:34:00# I'll smile and take a picture on the day... #

0:34:04 > 0:34:06Done.

0:34:06 > 0:34:09It's a little bit lopsided, isn't it?

0:34:16 > 0:34:19At the hospital, Lauren receives good news.

0:34:19 > 0:34:22The baby is in the right position for labour.

0:34:22 > 0:34:26Now he's head down, is there any chance that he could turn around

0:34:26 > 0:34:27and be breech again?

0:34:27 > 0:34:29It's unlikely at this stage.

0:34:34 > 0:34:35You've got to get dressed, babes.

0:34:35 > 0:34:38Across town, Holly's contractions are getting stronger.

0:34:38 > 0:34:42Unfazed, Martyn takes charge and times them.

0:34:43 > 0:34:47That's nine you've had within three and a half to four minutes.

0:34:47 > 0:34:49I don't want to get in and they send me home.

0:34:49 > 0:34:50They said between three to four minutes

0:34:50 > 0:34:53- and that's what you're having. I'll ring, yeah?- Yeah.

0:34:59 > 0:35:01She said, yeah, come in.

0:35:01 > 0:35:03Bring her bag, bring her notes.

0:35:03 > 0:35:05A midwife called Kate will be looking after us.

0:35:11 > 0:35:13All right?

0:35:16 > 0:35:20Only a month ago, chef Martyn had his head buried firmly in the sand

0:35:20 > 0:35:22when it came to the birth of his baby boy...

0:35:22 > 0:35:25What you don't know can't hurt you. The less I know, the better.

0:35:25 > 0:35:28..and had no plan to get involved in the labour.

0:35:28 > 0:35:32When Holly goes in to labour, what do you think your role will be?

0:35:32 > 0:35:33Turn up.

0:35:33 > 0:35:38After a big wake-up call in his midwife sessions...

0:35:38 > 0:35:39I'm not ready for this.

0:35:39 > 0:35:41- No, seriously. - SHE CRIES OUT

0:35:41 > 0:35:44..can he now help Holly when it matters most?

0:35:46 > 0:35:48Keep breathing, babes. Keep breathing.

0:35:50 > 0:35:53Martyn lost his nerve in a trial run,

0:35:53 > 0:35:56but so far he's keeping his head together for Holly.

0:35:56 > 0:35:59No, you can. It's fine, it's fine. Lean on me.

0:35:59 > 0:36:03'Getting her here, I felt like I was sort of controlling the situation.

0:36:03 > 0:36:05'Work is a lot more high pressured

0:36:05 > 0:36:07'but that is a different type of pressure.'

0:36:07 > 0:36:09It's like a personal pressure.

0:36:10 > 0:36:11You all right?

0:36:11 > 0:36:14The work I'm doing it for myself, whereas now I'm doing it for her.

0:36:18 > 0:36:20Nice to meet you.

0:36:20 > 0:36:23Shall we do a little antenatal check?

0:36:23 > 0:36:24Yeah.

0:36:24 > 0:36:27Midwife Kate wants to check to see how far Holly's dilated,

0:36:27 > 0:36:30which will show what stage of labour's she's in.

0:36:30 > 0:36:33She's four centimetres,

0:36:33 > 0:36:35but then when she contracts she goes to five.

0:36:37 > 0:36:40Her cervix is really soft and thin,

0:36:40 > 0:36:42so we're going to get her in the pool now.

0:36:45 > 0:36:47But now labour has fully taken hold,

0:36:47 > 0:36:50will Martyn continue to play an active role?

0:36:53 > 0:36:57Things are also moving along for Lauren and Shane,

0:36:57 > 0:36:59but there's been a complication.

0:36:59 > 0:37:01Despite the all-clear at her scan,

0:37:01 > 0:37:03blood tests have revealed

0:37:03 > 0:37:05that Lauren's liver isn't functioning properly,

0:37:05 > 0:37:08which could be dangerous for the baby.

0:37:08 > 0:37:12Got a phone call today to say that her blood tests have come back

0:37:12 > 0:37:14that her bile acids were too high.

0:37:14 > 0:37:16Very scary. I'm really scared.

0:37:16 > 0:37:18You'll be all right.

0:37:20 > 0:37:22They've now said the safest option for the baby is to,

0:37:22 > 0:37:24obviously, put you on the induce list.

0:37:24 > 0:37:26Inducing the baby

0:37:26 > 0:37:30means a midwife has to start Lauren's labour artificially.

0:37:30 > 0:37:32The news has come as a surprise,

0:37:32 > 0:37:36and now Shane has to show he is able to trust the experts.

0:37:36 > 0:37:38It is a bit of a shock and it's a little bit scary now.

0:37:38 > 0:37:41I've had no time to kind of think about it as such...

0:37:41 > 0:37:43- But I said... - ..but then at the same time

0:37:43 > 0:37:44we have - we've had nine months.

0:37:44 > 0:37:47- But now it's...- Oh, my God. - ..it's here now.

0:37:49 > 0:37:50It's all good. Give us a kiss.

0:37:50 > 0:37:52THEY LAUGH

0:37:52 > 0:37:53You're excited.

0:37:54 > 0:37:58Four weeks ago, control freak Shane wanted total command

0:37:58 > 0:37:59of the delivery room.

0:37:59 > 0:38:02I want to be able to help deliver.

0:38:03 > 0:38:06But after the shock of his midwife sessions...

0:38:06 > 0:38:08I'm actually feeling quite... light-headed and sick now.

0:38:08 > 0:38:11..he's decided to leave delivering his baby to the experts.

0:38:13 > 0:38:15But will he be a team player at the birth?

0:38:17 > 0:38:20When he started learning about pregnancy,

0:38:20 > 0:38:22Shane knew next to nothing.

0:38:22 > 0:38:25But now he considers himself something of an expert.

0:38:25 > 0:38:27This here is the baby's heartbeat.

0:38:27 > 0:38:30And he isn't shy about showing it!

0:38:30 > 0:38:33It's always around 130, the baby...the baby's baseline.

0:38:35 > 0:38:37Once he moves and kicks, it does shoot up to, like, 157.

0:38:39 > 0:38:44This line at the bottom is Lauren's muscle contraction.

0:38:46 > 0:38:48He's clever. Clever, aren't you?

0:38:48 > 0:38:50You keep pushing that down, because you keep moving it

0:38:50 > 0:38:52and it's not going to pick it up.

0:38:52 > 0:38:54It's dropped right down where you're messing about with it.

0:38:56 > 0:38:58Did you turn the iron off?

0:38:58 > 0:39:00But he can't be in control of everything.

0:39:00 > 0:39:05The midwife gives Lauren a pessary - a drug that will soften her cervix.

0:39:05 > 0:39:09She's keen Shane understands he has an important role to play.

0:39:09 > 0:39:11..half an hour, and some they don't find...

0:39:11 > 0:39:14I want him to be...to feel sort of part of the experience, really,

0:39:14 > 0:39:16because the more he feels part of it,

0:39:16 > 0:39:18the more he's going to do for, you know, for Lauren.

0:39:21 > 0:39:23But for now, it's a waiting game.

0:39:23 > 0:39:24It could take up to six hours

0:39:24 > 0:39:26before the drug manages to kick-start labour.

0:39:26 > 0:39:29MUSIC: Sitting, Waiting, Wishing by Jack Johnson

0:39:29 > 0:39:32# Must I always be waiting, waiting on you... #

0:39:32 > 0:39:36And Shane is determined to keep Lauren and himself entertained.

0:39:36 > 0:39:43# Must I always be playing, playing your fool?

0:39:43 > 0:39:45HE BREATHES HEAVILY

0:39:47 > 0:39:49# I keep playing your part

0:39:49 > 0:39:51# But it's not my scene... #

0:39:52 > 0:39:54I could do with a pillow, really.

0:39:57 > 0:39:59Oh-ho, that's much better!

0:39:59 > 0:40:01Maybe one more.

0:40:01 > 0:40:03What if I want to go asleep?

0:40:03 > 0:40:06You'll be OK, princess. You're doing a good job already.

0:40:06 > 0:40:09You just keep bouncing on that ball and it'll come.

0:40:09 > 0:40:11And you just lay there and watch the telly.

0:40:11 > 0:40:14My star sign says, "A joint or team effort needs a rethink.

0:40:14 > 0:40:16"You're doing all the work."

0:40:16 > 0:40:18Yeah, and since when have star signs come through?

0:40:18 > 0:40:21Find out in a minute. Literally, any second now she's coming in

0:40:21 > 0:40:24to have another check to see if she can have her waters broken.

0:40:24 > 0:40:27So then it'll be all go from there, really.

0:40:27 > 0:40:30OK, if I CAN break the waters, I will. All right?

0:40:30 > 0:40:33It's been six hours since Lauren was given a drug

0:40:33 > 0:40:36to stimulate her cervix ready for labour.

0:40:36 > 0:40:38Now the midwife wants to break her waters

0:40:38 > 0:40:40to start the birthing process.

0:40:40 > 0:40:43This is when you're allowed to squeeze him really tight

0:40:43 > 0:40:44because it's his fault.

0:40:44 > 0:40:47And Shane also has to take the strain.

0:40:47 > 0:40:48- You ready?- Mm-hm.

0:40:48 > 0:40:52It shouldn't hurt any more than what I'm doing at the moment, all right?

0:40:52 > 0:40:55- Ow! - You all right? Squeeze my hand, then.

0:40:55 > 0:40:58- I'm squeezing!- Oh! It's a big loss. Fabulous. Loads coming out.

0:40:58 > 0:41:00Is there loads? I really wanted to see that as well.

0:41:00 > 0:41:02Come and have a look.

0:41:02 > 0:41:05Oh, my. Oh, my God.

0:41:06 > 0:41:07Easy-peasy.

0:41:07 > 0:41:10Sorry, I'm just letting more of it trickle out.

0:41:10 > 0:41:13- Oh, my God.- That noise! - Did you hear that?

0:41:13 > 0:41:15This is really weird.

0:41:15 > 0:41:17- Can I take a photo of that?- No. - Please?

0:41:17 > 0:41:19Lauren, that's only to show you, babe.

0:41:19 > 0:41:21You wanted a bath.
