0:00:02 > 0:00:04Meet the Whewells. They're an average Welsh family,
0:00:04 > 0:00:06with two average Welsh teenagers,
0:00:06 > 0:00:12both with a growing Welsh problem - they're not too keen on exercise...
0:00:12 > 0:00:15I don't do anything sporty.
0:00:15 > 0:00:17..but they do like their food.
0:00:17 > 0:00:19I eat different kinds of junk food -
0:00:19 > 0:00:22kebabs, burgers, chocolate.
0:00:22 > 0:00:26In fact, like many of us, they're a bit too fond of their food...
0:00:26 > 0:00:32We eat way too much and I've done up from a size eight to ten, to 14.
0:00:32 > 0:00:34..which makes their story our story.
0:00:35 > 0:00:39Because Welsh youth is wrestling with a hefty problem.
0:00:39 > 0:00:42Wales has the largest number of overweight
0:00:42 > 0:00:44under-18s in Western Europe.
0:00:46 > 0:00:48And just like the Whewell sisters,
0:00:48 > 0:00:51three-quarters of those affected are teenage girls.
0:00:52 > 0:00:57So, what's happening? And can anything be done about it?
0:00:57 > 0:00:58In a unique experiment,
0:00:58 > 0:01:02we are going to get the Whewell sisters to swap lives, lifestyles
0:01:02 > 0:01:05and diets with the Thompson sisters -
0:01:05 > 0:01:08two super-fit, super-healthy teens
0:01:08 > 0:01:10with very different ideas about the food you should eat.
0:01:12 > 0:01:14I couldn't eat takeaways every night.
0:01:14 > 0:01:16It'd be horrible.
0:01:18 > 0:01:21But can the Thompsons inspire the Whewells and us
0:01:21 > 0:01:24to overcome our national battle with the bulge?
0:01:34 > 0:01:38The village of Abersychan in the Afon Lloyd Valley, Gwent
0:01:38 > 0:01:40is home to the Whewell family.
0:01:42 > 0:01:46Mum Helen and Dad Warren have been married for 13 years -
0:01:46 > 0:01:48it is their second marriage.
0:01:49 > 0:01:53Between them, they have three dogs, two cars,
0:01:53 > 0:01:55one hot tub
0:01:55 > 0:01:59and two teenage daughters worried about their weight.
0:01:59 > 0:02:0318-year-old Bonnie from Helen's first marriage
0:02:03 > 0:02:06and 12-year-old Jenni, who is all their own work.
0:02:09 > 0:02:12The Whewells are a busy, bustling, close-knit family,
0:02:12 > 0:02:15whose love for each other is matched by only one thing -
0:02:15 > 0:02:18their collective love of food.
0:02:18 > 0:02:20We're into food a lot.
0:02:20 > 0:02:23I like all different kinds of food,
0:02:23 > 0:02:26but mostly at the moment it's junk food.
0:02:26 > 0:02:29I enjoy cooking. You know, it's a real treat for me to cook.
0:02:29 > 0:02:31Yeah, she really likes cooking.
0:02:31 > 0:02:32On a normal day,
0:02:32 > 0:02:35if we're all together, we'd have a cooked breakfast.
0:02:35 > 0:02:37A full Welsh breakfast today.
0:02:37 > 0:02:42For lunch, she'd usually makes some sort of sandwich and chips,
0:02:42 > 0:02:44or some chicken and chips.
0:02:44 > 0:02:47Jenni, yours is ready!
0:02:47 > 0:02:49I'm very guilty, actually.
0:02:49 > 0:02:53I'll cook a meal and if they won't eat it,
0:02:53 > 0:02:56I can't bear to think that they'll go hungry,
0:02:56 > 0:02:57so I'll cook them something else.
0:02:57 > 0:03:00There have been times where I've had all the kids home
0:03:00 > 0:03:02and I've cooked six different meals.
0:03:02 > 0:03:04So, at the moment, Mum's into lamb shanks.
0:03:04 > 0:03:07Beef bourguignon or casserole or curry.
0:03:07 > 0:03:10Steaks and stuff like that, we do overload on that.
0:03:10 > 0:03:11Snacking is awful.
0:03:11 > 0:03:15Fizzy drinks, crisps, chocolate.
0:03:15 > 0:03:17We do have quite a lot of takeaways now.
0:03:18 > 0:03:21Burgers, kebabs, chicken nuggets...
0:03:21 > 0:03:26With takeaways, I would say, on a very bad week, we might have three.
0:03:26 > 0:03:27Cos it's easy, isn't it?
0:03:27 > 0:03:30You know, it is very easy just to go out and get a takeaway.
0:03:30 > 0:03:33We have eaten like this for quite some time, I would say.
0:03:33 > 0:03:37But I think where we've gone wrong is that you're meant to eat
0:03:37 > 0:03:41to live, but we now live to eat.
0:03:41 > 0:03:44Burgers? Onions? Onions?
0:03:47 > 0:03:51But all of this fun with food has its dark side.
0:03:51 > 0:03:53Like 59% of Welsh adults,
0:03:53 > 0:03:56the Whewell family now fall into the category of being
0:03:56 > 0:03:58overweight, or obese,
0:03:58 > 0:04:00and it's having a negative impact on all of them.
0:04:03 > 0:04:04For 12-year-old Jenni,
0:04:04 > 0:04:08peer pressure and social acceptance are already a worry.
0:04:08 > 0:04:12I am a bit more aware of my body weight since I've been 12,
0:04:12 > 0:04:15because when you're in primary school you don't really care
0:04:15 > 0:04:16what you look like.
0:04:16 > 0:04:19So, when you go up from primary school to high school,
0:04:19 > 0:04:21you feel more self-conscious.
0:04:21 > 0:04:24Some people, you look at them and you want to be like them -
0:04:24 > 0:04:26they're kind of your role model.
0:04:26 > 0:04:29And you think, "They're much prettier than you.
0:04:29 > 0:04:31"They're much slimmer than me."
0:04:33 > 0:04:37It's a teenage world of perceived prejudice and harsh self-judgement
0:04:37 > 0:04:40that 18-year-old Bonnie and her friends are acutely aware of.
0:04:42 > 0:04:46I think there's a lot of emphasis on weight now.
0:04:46 > 0:04:51At this age, people expect size ten, I suppose.
0:04:51 > 0:04:52Do you know what I mean?
0:04:52 > 0:04:55The thing is now, I kind of judge myself by other people.
0:04:55 > 0:04:57So, if I see a girl which I think is around my size,
0:04:57 > 0:05:00I'll say to myself, "Do I look that big?"
0:05:00 > 0:05:01And then, yeah...
0:05:01 > 0:05:05I don't think they look as good as other people,
0:05:05 > 0:05:07but that sounds really shallow.
0:05:08 > 0:05:12And whilst Bonnie and Jenni worry about how diet and lifestyle affect
0:05:12 > 0:05:17their appearance, Helen and Warren fear the impact to their insides.
0:05:17 > 0:05:19Physically, I feel tired a lot of the time.
0:05:19 > 0:05:22I get worried about the processed meat and that sort of thing.
0:05:22 > 0:05:24I'm a bit paranoid about it because cancer was quite high
0:05:24 > 0:05:27up in my family. And when you read all of the things,
0:05:27 > 0:05:31especially about processed meat, that worries me more than anything.
0:05:31 > 0:05:35I've got a heart condition called supraventricular tachycardia
0:05:35 > 0:05:38and I get quite significant heart arrhythmia,
0:05:38 > 0:05:42and I then get chest pain and very, very chronic fatigue.
0:05:42 > 0:05:45It's a condition that can be treated, but my consultant is very
0:05:45 > 0:05:50reluctant to do that unless I've lost a significant amount of weight.
0:05:50 > 0:05:54Hello, my darling. Mum, don't do that.
0:05:54 > 0:05:56We've decided to do this experiment
0:05:56 > 0:06:00because things really do need to change, for all of us.
0:06:00 > 0:06:02I'm not sure if we can do that gradually
0:06:02 > 0:06:05without a very stark lesson being learnt, because I think we've got
0:06:05 > 0:06:08in to that sort of mind set where food is central to everything.
0:06:08 > 0:06:12So, I think we really need to learn some new habits
0:06:12 > 0:06:14and break the old ones.
0:06:14 > 0:06:18And who better to teach the Whewells some vigorous new habits than
0:06:18 > 0:06:19the ultra-fit...
0:06:19 > 0:06:21Ready, steady, go!
0:06:21 > 0:06:24..ultra-competitive Thompson family?
0:06:26 > 0:06:29Sports mad sisters Rosie, 15,
0:06:29 > 0:06:34and Eva, 13, train and compete seven days a week.
0:06:34 > 0:06:37This is for gymnast of the year.
0:06:37 > 0:06:39This is for gymkhana.
0:06:39 > 0:06:42These are for athletics.
0:06:42 > 0:06:46That's my gymnastics trophy, when I was five.
0:06:46 > 0:06:47They're ice skating.
0:06:47 > 0:06:51They're my medals for gym - I have 40.
0:06:52 > 0:06:55And Mum and Dad are no sporting slouches either.
0:06:55 > 0:06:59I was the only one who brought home a medal from the Welsh Champs.
0:06:59 > 0:07:03In fact, the whole Thompson family, including the horses,
0:07:03 > 0:07:08the chickens and the dog are exhausting just to watch.
0:07:10 > 0:07:11And juggling this high energy,
0:07:11 > 0:07:15time-intensive lifestyle requires planning and discipline.
0:07:16 > 0:07:20And so home life on a sprawling Cardiff estate is run like a
0:07:20 > 0:07:22mini commando unit.
0:07:22 > 0:07:24Paramedic Dad Freddie is ex-military,
0:07:24 > 0:07:28but it's Mum Sarah, a nurse, who's in charge of this particular unit.
0:07:31 > 0:07:32I don't want to call it a regime
0:07:32 > 0:07:35because that sounds too Hitler or Stalin.
0:07:35 > 0:07:38Does one of you want to go and sort the chickens out?
0:07:38 > 0:07:41Cos...they're coming in the conservatory.
0:07:41 > 0:07:43The kids would call me controlling.
0:07:43 > 0:07:45They call me a control freak.
0:07:45 > 0:07:47Will you sort the chickens out, Eva?
0:07:47 > 0:07:49I think you'll find that the kids would probably say,
0:07:49 > 0:07:50"Mum's a control freak."
0:07:50 > 0:07:52You must go and check the eggs after.
0:07:52 > 0:07:57She means well, but she's a control freak.
0:07:57 > 0:08:00It's a harsh description for someone who simply cares passionately
0:08:00 > 0:08:04that her super-fit family are properly fuelled.
0:08:04 > 0:08:07I think that the diet is hugely important.
0:08:07 > 0:08:10You get out what you put in, basically, so if you don't have
0:08:10 > 0:08:14good fuel inside you, then what do you expect to ask of your body?
0:08:14 > 0:08:17My mum monitors every food we have.
0:08:17 > 0:08:19Everything has to be healthy with her.
0:08:19 > 0:08:24Carbohydrates, protein and fruit and vegetables.
0:08:24 > 0:08:26We've got a meal planner in the kitchen.
0:08:26 > 0:08:30We've got ideas for breakfast, lunch when they're in school,
0:08:30 > 0:08:34they have a packed lunch, and dinner and ideas for snacks.
0:08:34 > 0:08:37They're organised then and they don't have to think,
0:08:37 > 0:08:39because when they come home from school,
0:08:39 > 0:08:41they don't seem to have that capacity to think.
0:08:41 > 0:08:43Can you come and get your lunch, please?
0:08:43 > 0:08:45Everybody has the same.
0:08:45 > 0:08:49I'm not really making a fuss of their likes and their dislikes.
0:08:49 > 0:08:52They'll have it. If they don't want it, they can pick it out.
0:08:52 > 0:08:57I really do think it is a battle and I think if you, for a moment,
0:08:57 > 0:08:59take your eye off the ball, that's it.
0:08:59 > 0:09:01When I'm out with my friends and
0:09:01 > 0:09:03I pick up something that's not healthy,
0:09:03 > 0:09:07I have my mum's voice at the back of my head, like,
0:09:07 > 0:09:10"You shouldn't be doing that. You shouldn't eat that."
0:09:10 > 0:09:15And then I feel guilty and I'm like, "Oh, no, I can't do it."
0:09:15 > 0:09:19I think you can eat some rubbish with a good balanced diet
0:09:19 > 0:09:21and it's all about balance.
0:09:21 > 0:09:24If I eat a piece of chocolate cake, I won't go and say,
0:09:24 > 0:09:28"That chocolate cake was really nice. Can I have six more pieces, please?"
0:09:28 > 0:09:30Cos that would be...
0:09:30 > 0:09:33That's greedy and that's sick.
0:09:33 > 0:09:34It's knowing what's right and what's wrong.
0:09:34 > 0:09:37I know what's good for me and what isn't.
0:09:37 > 0:09:39I am what I am and we are what we are.
0:09:39 > 0:09:42Did you know that if you talk for 52 minutes,
0:09:42 > 0:09:43you burn 100 calories?
0:09:45 > 0:09:49The Thompsons and the Whewells - two extremely different families.
0:09:49 > 0:09:51One happy with their lifestyle and their diets.
0:09:51 > 0:09:54One who really wants to change.
0:09:56 > 0:10:00But can the Thompsons help the Whewells achieve those changes?
0:10:00 > 0:10:02We're about to find out
0:10:02 > 0:10:04because it's time to begin our unique experiment.
0:10:05 > 0:10:09For the next week, Bonnie and Jenni will swap homes, parents,
0:10:09 > 0:10:12lifestyles and diets with Rosie and Eva.
0:10:13 > 0:10:16Will the healthy habits of the goody two shoes Thompsons
0:10:16 > 0:10:18rub off on the Whewells?
0:10:18 > 0:10:25Nice Thompson hoodie, which says, "British Finals."
0:10:25 > 0:10:28Or will the Whewells corrupt the Thompsons with a steady
0:10:28 > 0:10:32stream of cakes, pies and takeaways?
0:10:32 > 0:10:35And four poppadoms, please.
0:10:35 > 0:10:39We've no idea and neither have they.
0:10:39 > 0:10:41At this point, the girls don't even know where
0:10:41 > 0:10:45they are going, let alone who's shoes they'll be stepping into.
0:10:45 > 0:10:48So, we've asked both sets of sisters to make each other
0:10:48 > 0:10:49an introductory DVD.
0:10:51 > 0:10:54Hi, I'm Rosie. And I'm Eva.
0:10:54 > 0:10:56We lead quite busy lives.
0:10:56 > 0:11:00On a Monday, I do athletics training. I do long distance.
0:11:00 > 0:11:04On Mondays, I do hurdles and pole vaults.
0:11:04 > 0:11:06On Tuesday, I do athletics training.
0:11:06 > 0:11:09Wednesday, I go for a long bike ride.
0:11:09 > 0:11:12Thursdays, I do gym...
0:11:12 > 0:11:15and ice skate in the morning at seven.
0:11:15 > 0:11:17Hi, I'm Bonnie. I'm Jenni.
0:11:17 > 0:11:20We're the sisters you'll be swapping with. Welcome to our home.
0:11:20 > 0:11:24While you're here, I'm sure Mum will make you a loads of strange food,
0:11:24 > 0:11:27which you've probably never tasted before.
0:11:27 > 0:11:30A lot of deserts, cakes cake pops, panna cotta...
0:11:30 > 0:11:34We usually go to the kebab shop, chip shop, McDonald's.
0:11:34 > 0:11:36I reckon we eat too many takeaways.
0:11:36 > 0:11:43With Mum, we could impolitely describe her as control freak.
0:11:43 > 0:11:46My mum is very friendly. She's very happy. She's very soppy.
0:11:46 > 0:11:48To get around her, just make her feel guilty about something
0:11:48 > 0:11:50and she'll give in straight away.
0:11:50 > 0:11:55In this family, we compete with each other a lot.
0:11:55 > 0:11:59Good luck to you both. You'll have a pretty busy week.
0:12:00 > 0:12:04Ooh... Oh, no. This is going to be a nightmare!
0:12:04 > 0:12:07It probably will be a dietary nightmare.
0:12:07 > 0:12:11I think we could come back and we could be the unhealthy ones.
0:12:11 > 0:12:16I've had a wakeup call already, really. Have you? Yeah. Right.
0:12:16 > 0:12:19We do nothing. They are just going to think we're slobs.
0:12:19 > 0:12:22ALL LAUGH
0:12:22 > 0:12:26Oh, dear. Not quite the reactions we were hoping for.
0:12:26 > 0:12:27But there's no turning back now,
0:12:27 > 0:12:30and it's time to get this swap on the road.
0:12:31 > 0:12:33So, any final hopes and fears?
0:12:35 > 0:12:38I feel quite good. Excited. Nervous.
0:12:38 > 0:12:40Intrigued.
0:12:40 > 0:12:42Nervous about meeting the mum and dad,
0:12:42 > 0:12:45about doing all the sporty activities.
0:12:45 > 0:12:46You're excited, aren't you?
0:12:46 > 0:12:49I just don't want to embarrass myself.
0:12:49 > 0:12:51I'm feeling really worried about what the family eat -
0:12:51 > 0:12:53unhealthy food all of the time.
0:12:54 > 0:12:58In a week's time, I'd like to say that I know how to have a
0:12:58 > 0:13:01healthy diet, how to live a more active lifestyle,
0:13:01 > 0:13:02lose a bit of weight.
0:13:02 > 0:13:06Just feel good about myself in my own skin, I suppose.
0:13:06 > 0:13:10Don't cry. Don't kiss me cos you've got lipstick on.
0:13:10 > 0:13:16Basically, be more healthy, be more active, do more sports...
0:13:16 > 0:13:19No, Mum.
0:13:19 > 0:13:21..and to gain self-confidence.
0:13:21 > 0:13:24Well, it's clear what Bonnie and Jenni hope to gain from the swap.
0:13:24 > 0:13:27Right, party!
0:13:27 > 0:13:30But how do Rosie and Eva feel about their challenge of getting
0:13:30 > 0:13:33Helen and Warren to try a healthier lifestyle?
0:13:33 > 0:13:37If, at the end of the week, they've changed then I think I'd be
0:13:37 > 0:13:38a bit flattered.
0:13:38 > 0:13:45I might be quite proud of myself and Eva for having an impact on them.
0:13:45 > 0:13:48There is one worrying fact that we've kept from the Thompson
0:13:48 > 0:13:51family - that a young person is five times more likely to be
0:13:51 > 0:13:55overweight if one of the adults they live with is also overweight.
0:13:57 > 0:14:00So, what happens if a week with the Whewells turns Eva
0:14:00 > 0:14:03and Rosie into fast food junkies?
0:14:03 > 0:14:07My worst fear for them would be burgers and chips,
0:14:07 > 0:14:13takeaway pizza every night, soft drinks, full fat coke.
0:14:13 > 0:14:16That would be my worst nightmare.
0:14:16 > 0:14:19Looking forward to trying Helen's cake.
0:14:19 > 0:14:23If they came home and told me that they wanted burgers
0:14:23 > 0:14:27and chips for breakfast, lunch and dinner, it'd be a big fat no.
0:14:27 > 0:14:29That's not going to happen.
0:14:29 > 0:14:30We shall see.
0:14:31 > 0:14:35Hello. Hello. Welcome. Good trip up? Yeah.
0:14:35 > 0:14:37Nice to meet you. Come on in.
0:14:37 > 0:14:41Hello! Come on in. Nice to meet you.
0:14:41 > 0:14:43Nice to see you. Nice to see you.
0:14:43 > 0:14:45You're Jenni, are you? Yeah.
0:14:45 > 0:14:48First up, house rules.
0:14:48 > 0:14:51We have one rule in this house. If you want anything,
0:14:51 > 0:14:54please don't wait to be asked, just go and get it when you want it, OK?
0:14:54 > 0:14:58So, if there's anything you fancy, just raid the cupboards.
0:14:58 > 0:15:02Anything you fancy doing, whether it's cooking, going anywhere,
0:15:02 > 0:15:04anything you want to eat, say.
0:15:04 > 0:15:07We haven't really got any other rules, have we?
0:15:07 > 0:15:09Apart from make your bed.
0:15:09 > 0:15:11Have you got any questions?
0:15:11 > 0:15:14No, not really, not yet.
0:15:14 > 0:15:17So, are you hungry? Yeah.
0:15:17 > 0:15:19Do you want a snack? Yes, please.
0:15:19 > 0:15:22OK. What about some crisps? Yes, please.
0:15:22 > 0:15:24Lovely. I shall get you a bowl each now.
0:15:24 > 0:15:29Start as you mean to go on, so it's probably mung beans in Cardiff.
0:15:29 > 0:15:33From a dinners point of view as well, this is where my kids
0:15:33 > 0:15:36will have told you I'm a bit of a control freak.
0:15:36 > 0:15:41I tend not to pander to any specific needs unless it's an allergy.
0:15:41 > 0:15:44Girls, this is some of the meal planners.
0:15:44 > 0:15:45What do you think of the dinners?
0:15:45 > 0:15:48Yeah, I like all of that.
0:15:48 > 0:15:50You're the fussy eater, aren't you?
0:15:51 > 0:15:56I think I might struggle cos I'm not a fan of fish.
0:15:56 > 0:16:00- Erm... - Do you wonder what that is?
0:16:00 > 0:16:03Yeah. It's where we have a takeaway.
0:16:03 > 0:16:05Dirty food.
0:16:05 > 0:16:09Street food. Dirty food.
0:16:09 > 0:16:12The kids have gone off having dirty food night.
0:16:12 > 0:16:14They prefer to have it homemade.
0:16:14 > 0:16:16My gosh. Homemade kebabs as well.
0:16:17 > 0:16:20- What sort of takeaways do you have? - Kebabs.
0:16:20 > 0:16:26Yeah, we have kebabs, Indian, Chinese, McDonald's, Domino's. KFC.
0:16:26 > 0:16:29You know that beef bourguignon you were looking forward to for lunch?
0:16:29 > 0:16:33Well, it's probably more likely to be beans on toast.
0:16:35 > 0:16:38I'd rather that.
0:16:39 > 0:16:42So, with the ice broken, it's healthy beans
0:16:42 > 0:16:44for the new regime in Cardiff.
0:16:44 > 0:16:46Whilst in Abersychan,
0:16:46 > 0:16:50the girls are limbering up for their lunch with baskets full of crisps.
0:16:50 > 0:16:53And guess what's on the menu for the main course?
0:16:53 > 0:16:55We've got beef bourguignon.
0:16:55 > 0:16:59We've got some potatoes, which were picked off the patio this morning.
0:16:59 > 0:17:02We're going to have quite a simple lunch really, and then for dessert
0:17:02 > 0:17:08we've got elderflower and Prosecco jelly with fruit set in to it.
0:17:08 > 0:17:11We don't want to fill them up too much cos we've got quite
0:17:11 > 0:17:14a lot of food for tonight for the barbeque.
0:17:14 > 0:17:16And because I know they like chocolate,
0:17:16 > 0:17:18I've made them a chocolate torte.
0:17:18 > 0:17:20Food, glorious food.
0:17:20 > 0:17:22The crisps were a bit big.
0:17:22 > 0:17:25When they came out, I was like, "OK..."
0:17:26 > 0:17:30There's lunch and then we've got dinner. Then we've got a barbeque.
0:17:33 > 0:17:34Oh dear.
0:17:34 > 0:17:36It's just so much.
0:17:36 > 0:17:39I'm quite full after the crisps.
0:17:39 > 0:17:41I'll try to eat as much as I can.
0:17:41 > 0:17:43We'll see how the first day goes, then we'll...
0:17:43 > 0:17:48Start the changes on the second day.
0:17:48 > 0:17:50They're really nice people. They're really nice.
0:17:50 > 0:17:52I don't know how I'm going to cope for the week.
0:17:52 > 0:17:55Here we go. Right, that one's yours.
0:17:55 > 0:17:57And I'll get yours now.
0:17:59 > 0:18:01Mad.
0:18:02 > 0:18:08It's a feast for Rosie and Eva, but is it famine for Bonnie and Jenni?
0:18:09 > 0:18:12We're making beans on toast with cheese,
0:18:12 > 0:18:15but I've never tried beans on toast with cheese before.
0:18:15 > 0:18:17No way!
0:18:17 > 0:18:21When I was a student, we used to do great things with a tin of beans.
0:18:21 > 0:18:24I think we'll be needing a lot of energy later today,
0:18:24 > 0:18:28so we'll have a bit of protein and some energy-giving food.
0:18:28 > 0:18:29Wow!
0:18:29 > 0:18:33It's adventurous really, isn't it?
0:18:33 > 0:18:36Something different.
0:18:38 > 0:18:43Beans on toast with onions in. I quite like it. It's a change...
0:18:43 > 0:18:46No butter on the toast. Don't need the butter on the toast.
0:18:46 > 0:18:50I don't like butter on toast that much anyway. Good.
0:18:50 > 0:18:56Adventurous? Maybe. Healthy? Definitely. And cheap.
0:18:56 > 0:19:00Helen's beef bourginion is not only five times the calorie
0:19:00 > 0:19:05count of those humble beans, but at £5 a head, it also costs five
0:19:05 > 0:19:09times as much, which may go some way to explain her weekly food bill.
0:19:11 > 0:19:16Our average is about £180 and that's what we try...
0:19:16 > 0:19:19On a week where we're not doing anything special,
0:19:19 > 0:19:23but then we have a sort of entertainment budget, if you like.
0:19:23 > 0:19:25So, you could easily go another £100 over that
0:19:25 > 0:19:30if you've got something going on, or you're having people around.
0:19:30 > 0:19:35We only spend about £20 a week on what we buy.
0:19:35 > 0:19:38Then, on one week, its £30 or £40 cos of the veg box.
0:19:38 > 0:19:41Yeah, cos we have a veg box delivered.
0:19:41 > 0:19:43That's once a fortnight. Yeah.
0:19:43 > 0:19:46I'm guessing you don't go hungry on that.
0:19:46 > 0:19:49You know, you've got plenty of food there. Wow.
0:19:49 > 0:19:54Just think what we could do if we only spent that much on food.
0:19:54 > 0:19:56I'm really really impressed by that.
0:19:56 > 0:19:58Perhaps we ought to try that.
0:19:58 > 0:20:01Right, scrub this then. Beans on toast all week?
0:20:02 > 0:20:06That fortnightly veg box is key to the Thompson's pre-planned
0:20:06 > 0:20:07cheap and healthy diet,
0:20:07 > 0:20:11but it's certainly not the way to Jenni's heart, or stomach.
0:20:13 > 0:20:16Do you like stuffed mushrooms? No.
0:20:16 > 0:20:21No. Loads of courgettes. Do you like courgettes? Nope.
0:20:21 > 0:20:22We'll hide them for you.
0:20:22 > 0:20:24Do you like tomatoes? Nope.
0:20:24 > 0:20:29Do you like fruit? Pears? A Pear? No. No? Apples? Yeah.
0:20:29 > 0:20:31Bananas? Yeah.
0:20:31 > 0:20:32Peaches? I've never tried them.
0:20:32 > 0:20:36You haven't tried peaches. Strawberries? Nope.
0:20:36 > 0:20:39Olives? No. Couscous?
0:20:41 > 0:20:43I like couscous. I've never tried it.
0:20:43 > 0:20:46I don't usually have vegetables at home -
0:20:46 > 0:20:48it's usually chips.
0:20:48 > 0:20:54What do you have for breakfast normally? Nothing.
0:20:54 > 0:20:57But Mum started buying Pop Tarts
0:20:57 > 0:21:02and we've started having them for breakfast, and that's not good.
0:21:02 > 0:21:04Why is that not good, Bonnie?
0:21:04 > 0:21:07Chocolate for breakfast.
0:21:07 > 0:21:10So, we're just four hours into this seven-day experiment
0:21:10 > 0:21:14and some pronounced local difficulties are already surfacing.
0:21:14 > 0:21:18Jenni's extreme fussy eating could seriously hamper any attempt
0:21:18 > 0:21:21to wean her off kebabs, Pop Tarts and chips.
0:21:23 > 0:21:26And things are no better in Abersychan,
0:21:26 > 0:21:27where far from encouraging Helen
0:21:27 > 0:21:32to follow her dreams of a healthier diet and £20 a week food bills,
0:21:32 > 0:21:34Eva and Rosie appear to have gone native.
0:21:34 > 0:21:38We haven't been that active today and it's made me
0:21:38 > 0:21:42more tired than I normally would be after doing exercise.
0:21:42 > 0:21:45I think I might feel really tired, not being active.
0:21:45 > 0:21:50It's kind of draining, being inside all day.
0:21:50 > 0:21:52You're a bit like...
0:21:53 > 0:21:55I can't be bothered.
0:21:55 > 0:21:58Well, there's been a modicum of outdoor activity -
0:21:58 > 0:22:02a trip to the local butchers to get meat for the barbeque.
0:22:02 > 0:22:05I'll have 20 burgers,
0:22:05 > 0:22:09ten plain sausages and ten dragon sausages, please.
0:22:09 > 0:22:11Do you like...?
0:22:11 > 0:22:14I guess the barbecue will be fun. Oh, that's perfect. Thank you.
0:22:15 > 0:22:18There won't be a shortage of food.
0:22:18 > 0:22:22I'm looking forward to trying the food and what there is.
0:22:22 > 0:22:25If it comes with salad and stuff.
0:22:28 > 0:22:31Whilst Eva and Rosie contemplate their next meal,
0:22:31 > 0:22:34there's no time to slouch on the couch in Cardiff.
0:22:34 > 0:22:35Fuelled up on beans and cheese,
0:22:35 > 0:22:39it's time for Bonnie and Jenni to get physical.
0:22:39 > 0:22:43What we've planned for this afternoon is to go for a nice long bike ride,
0:22:43 > 0:22:46and hopefully we'll get to Castell Coch.
0:22:46 > 0:22:47SHE GASPS
0:22:47 > 0:22:50Really? That is long!
0:22:50 > 0:22:52But it's all downhill on the way back.
0:22:52 > 0:22:54So, we've gotta go uphill? Slightly.
0:22:54 > 0:22:56Oh, my God. I'm going to be rolling back down.
0:22:56 > 0:22:59ALL LAUGH
0:22:59 > 0:23:01What was that? I don't know what to wear!
0:23:01 > 0:23:03With what you're about to do, Bonnie,
0:23:03 > 0:23:05fashion will be the least of your worries.
0:23:05 > 0:23:08Countdown to the go.
0:23:08 > 0:23:12I've been told it's about five miles there, about five miles back.
0:23:12 > 0:23:15Yeah, if I can start going.
0:23:15 > 0:23:18I haven't been on a bike in years.
0:23:20 > 0:23:22Jen, Jen, Jen, Jen!
0:23:22 > 0:23:24Put your breaks on then.
0:23:24 > 0:23:26I am! You're not even that close.
0:23:26 > 0:23:29I was. Now I'm getting close.
0:23:29 > 0:23:32I don't think many people my age do exercise at all,
0:23:32 > 0:23:35unless they're overweight and they're trying to lose weight.
0:23:35 > 0:23:38I know a lot of my friends don't walk anywhere anymore.
0:23:38 > 0:23:40If we're going somewhere, we always try and get a lift.
0:23:43 > 0:23:46In Abersychan, party preparations are under way.
0:23:48 > 0:23:54Tonight, we're having a little welcome party for Rosie and Eva.
0:23:54 > 0:23:58We're going to have a barbeque and do a lot of the things that
0:23:58 > 0:24:00we would do if our girls were home,
0:24:00 > 0:24:02so we'll cook a lot of the same things.
0:24:04 > 0:24:06Yeah, that's lovely. Thank you.
0:24:06 > 0:24:10With a tub of pop to drink and a mountain of meat to consume,
0:24:10 > 0:24:12Eva and Rosie have taken it upon themselves to prepare
0:24:12 > 0:24:16something a little healthier - a super salad.
0:24:16 > 0:24:21Raisins, grapes, lettuce, avocados,
0:24:21 > 0:24:24pepper, sweetcorn and...
0:24:24 > 0:24:27Raisins. Looks like little rabbit droppings.
0:24:30 > 0:24:32I think the nice thing is that Rosie and Eva
0:24:32 > 0:24:35have had a little bit of input into tonight's menu.
0:24:35 > 0:24:38They've done an absolutely amazing salad, really beautiful.
0:24:38 > 0:24:42Already I can see that they're starting to have a very small
0:24:42 > 0:24:43but definite impact on us,
0:24:43 > 0:24:46because I can't wait to eat the salad, whereas normally I'd be
0:24:46 > 0:24:48thinking, "I can't wait to get my teeth around that steak."
0:24:48 > 0:24:50But I'm actually thinking how nice the salad looks,
0:24:50 > 0:24:52so I think that's brilliant.
0:24:53 > 0:24:56Back on the bikes, Bonnie's feeling the burn.
0:24:56 > 0:24:59Oh, my God, I don't know what to do.
0:25:00 > 0:25:03I'm not as fit as I thought I would be.
0:25:03 > 0:25:05Oh, my legs.
0:25:05 > 0:25:07My bum is hurting already.
0:25:07 > 0:25:09My bum is killing.
0:25:09 > 0:25:12'This is kind of a wakeup call.
0:25:12 > 0:25:13'I should be way fitter than this.'
0:25:13 > 0:25:17Jenni, on the other hand, is loving the challenge.
0:25:17 > 0:25:18OK, Jen? Yeah.
0:25:18 > 0:25:21Attacking the one-in-ten gradient up to Castell Coch
0:25:21 > 0:25:24with grit and determination.
0:25:24 > 0:25:28Just keep your legs steady. That's it. You're doing well. Well done.
0:25:28 > 0:25:31Now cycle faster. Cracking.
0:25:31 > 0:25:33Helped out by her able new fitness instructor -
0:25:33 > 0:25:36ex-army corporal Frederick Thompson.
0:25:40 > 0:25:43Big cheer, yay! Come on, we did it. Well done.
0:25:43 > 0:25:46She did absolutely fantastic, fair due to her.
0:25:46 > 0:25:48How you feeling?
0:25:48 > 0:25:53Tired, but proud of myself.
0:25:53 > 0:25:55That's good.
0:25:57 > 0:25:59The meat is on in Abersychan.
0:25:59 > 0:26:02The salad's on the table, but will there be any takers amongst
0:26:02 > 0:26:04the arriving guests?
0:26:04 > 0:26:06Jenni's school friends Beth and Grace...
0:26:08 > 0:26:11..Bonnie's boyfriend Joel and her best friend Amber.
0:26:13 > 0:26:14As the burgers broil,
0:26:14 > 0:26:18there's a chance to compare some very different lifestyles.
0:26:20 > 0:26:22How far did you say you run?
0:26:22 > 0:26:25I do 800, 1,500, cross country.
0:26:25 > 0:26:29Cross country is quite long, isn't it? Yeah. 4K?
0:26:29 > 0:26:31Really? Oh, my God.
0:26:31 > 0:26:33Can you see Bonnie doing that?
0:26:33 > 0:26:36I don't know. She's just not a sporty person.
0:26:36 > 0:26:40I think she wants to be more sporty and stuff
0:26:40 > 0:26:43because she does get proper worried about her weight.
0:26:43 > 0:26:47It's constantly on her mind, about her weight, and she hates it.
0:26:47 > 0:26:51She's only put the weight on over the past two years, I'd say.
0:26:51 > 0:26:56She looks back at pictures and thinks, "Why am I not the same size?"
0:26:56 > 0:26:59The last time I rode a bike would have been...
0:26:59 > 0:27:03six years ago at least, maybe even longer.
0:27:03 > 0:27:05Well done, Bonnie.
0:27:05 > 0:27:08I haven't done anything like that for a long time.
0:27:08 > 0:27:11Woo! I'm feeling really good.
0:27:11 > 0:27:14Exercise gives you a good feeling, I think.
0:27:14 > 0:27:16All the blood is rushing around my body.
0:27:19 > 0:27:24It's been a first day of contrasting experiences and contrasting foods.
0:27:24 > 0:27:26There you go, sweetheart. You want the works?
0:27:26 > 0:27:29And there's a long way to go if the Whewell family truly want to
0:27:29 > 0:27:31get to grips with their lifestyle and their diet,
0:27:31 > 0:27:34and some big questions to be answered.
0:27:34 > 0:27:36Burgers? Onions?
0:27:36 > 0:27:38Can Bonnie stop bingeing on takeaways?
0:27:38 > 0:27:42I feel like, in my head now, I know I can do it more
0:27:42 > 0:27:46and I've got the will there to get fitter.
0:27:46 > 0:27:48Can Jenni overcome her fussy attitudes to food?
0:27:48 > 0:27:50Try it. You've gotta try stuff.
0:27:50 > 0:27:52The whole point of this experience is to trying new stuff.
0:27:52 > 0:27:54Nope, I'm not eating it.
0:27:55 > 0:27:56Fine.
0:27:56 > 0:27:59Chicken's off, I'm afraid, nobody can have any.
0:27:59 > 0:28:01And will Helen and Warren accept
0:28:01 > 0:28:04that it is them who need to take the lead?
0:28:04 > 0:28:06Why? Cos I'm having it all.
0:28:06 > 0:28:09I feel that parents have quite a big responsibility
0:28:09 > 0:28:12in the upbringing of the children because they are the key educators.
0:28:12 > 0:28:16So, if those behaviours are there from the start,
0:28:16 > 0:28:18the child is going to learn bad behaviours
0:28:18 > 0:28:22and that's not going to be preferable for a long life.
0:28:25 > 0:28:29In the next Family Life Swap, Sarah tells it like it is...
0:28:29 > 0:28:32Life is tough - it is a competition.
0:28:32 > 0:28:34..Rosie has a confectionary confession...
0:28:34 > 0:28:38I dream about cake and I dream about my teeth falling out.
0:28:38 > 0:28:40Really?
0:28:40 > 0:28:43..and Bonnie has some candid online advice for Helen and Warren.
0:28:43 > 0:28:45It's you that need to change!
