0:00:02 > 0:00:05Two sets of very different sisters living very different lifestyles

0:00:05 > 0:00:07are taking part in an unique life swap.

0:00:09 > 0:00:1212-year-old Jenni Whewell and her 18-year-old sister Bonnie

0:00:12 > 0:00:15are struggling with exercise...

0:00:15 > 0:00:17I don't do anything sporty.

0:00:17 > 0:00:19..their diets...

0:00:19 > 0:00:21I eat all this different kind of junk food.

0:00:21 > 0:00:23Kebabs, burgers.

0:00:23 > 0:00:25..and their weight.

0:00:25 > 0:00:28I've gone up from a size 8-10 to a 14.

0:00:28 > 0:00:30But Bonnie and Jenni are not alone.

0:00:32 > 0:00:35Because Welsh teenagers are the most overweight in Western Europe.

0:00:35 > 0:00:39And 75% of those fighting the flab are girls.

0:00:41 > 0:00:42In a week-long experiment,

0:00:42 > 0:00:46Bonnie and Jenni have swapped lives with the Thompson sisters.

0:00:48 > 0:00:52Rosie, 15, and Eva, 13, are super-healthy, super-active

0:00:52 > 0:00:55and very conscious of what they eat.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02But can the Thompson family inspire the Whewells, and us,

0:01:02 > 0:01:05to overcome our national battle with the bulge?

0:01:17 > 0:01:20It's halfway through the seven-day experiment that is Family Life Swap.

0:01:20 > 0:01:21What sauce, please?

0:01:21 > 0:01:24And in Cardiff, Bonnie and Jenni's attempts

0:01:24 > 0:01:27to adopt a healthier lifestyle and diet

0:01:27 > 0:01:29have seen food fallouts...

0:01:29 > 0:01:31- Do you like couscous?- No.

0:01:31 > 0:01:34- She's driving me mad!- 'Why?' - She won't try anything!

0:01:34 > 0:01:36..and physical challenges.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38Oh, no!

0:01:38 > 0:01:39I feel like I'm falling off!

0:01:40 > 0:01:43In Abersychan, meanwhile, Rosie and Eva's attempts

0:01:43 > 0:01:45to get the Whewell parents to change their ways

0:01:45 > 0:01:49have largely fallen foul of Rosie's sweet tooth...

0:01:49 > 0:01:52They're my weakness! They even match my nails.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55..and a mountain of fabulous food.

0:01:55 > 0:01:57Girls, kebabs!

0:01:57 > 0:01:58But in a Skype call home,

0:01:58 > 0:02:02the finger of blame is pointed firmly at mum Helen.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04- It's you that need to change! - HE LAUGHS

0:02:04 > 0:02:06You need to buy the right food.

0:02:06 > 0:02:08- It's actually my fault. - It's you.- Yeah.

0:02:08 > 0:02:10- You're the only one, I'm afraid. - Right.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12And whilst her daughters have been embracing

0:02:12 > 0:02:14a new diet and lifestyle in Cardiff...

0:02:14 > 0:02:15Aaah!

0:02:15 > 0:02:18..can Helen meet the challenge and change hers?

0:02:18 > 0:02:21We're obviously too indulgent.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24Or is she too firmly stuck in her ways?

0:02:24 > 0:02:26I'm sorry, I just love it all.

0:02:26 > 0:02:27LAUGHTER

0:02:33 > 0:02:35Day four of the swap,

0:02:35 > 0:02:38and in Abersychan, last night's Skype call

0:02:38 > 0:02:41appears to have given Helen some real food for thought.

0:02:41 > 0:02:43Instead of a full fry-up on the go,

0:02:43 > 0:02:45she's accepted Rosie and Eva's offer

0:02:45 > 0:02:48of a fresh fruit salad for breakfast.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50Oh, fantastic. Thank you so much.

0:02:50 > 0:02:54- It's absolutely fabulous. Isn't it lovely?- Mm.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56Helen's also got out of bed in a reflective mood.

0:02:56 > 0:03:00What I think has become clear over the last couple of days

0:03:00 > 0:03:02is there's actually quite a psychological element

0:03:02 > 0:03:04to food in this house.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06And it's not necessarily about eating

0:03:06 > 0:03:08the right things for the right reasons.

0:03:08 > 0:03:12It's about, um...probably over-nurturing a little bit.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15I think I need to toughen up a little bit and, um...

0:03:15 > 0:03:17You know, they won't starve,

0:03:17 > 0:03:20because humans aren't programmed to starve, are they? They will eat.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23So I think I just need to get a bit of a grip on that

0:03:23 > 0:03:25and not be too indulgent with them.

0:03:25 > 0:03:26- So I am learning.- Mm.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29I've got two very good teachers, though, I've got to say.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32- Yep.- We're quite proud of being the good teachers.

0:03:32 > 0:03:33LAUGHTER

0:03:33 > 0:03:35I feel very virtuous.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37HE LAUGHS

0:03:39 > 0:03:43So is this really Helen seeing the lifestyle light,

0:03:43 > 0:03:46or is she just paying lip service? Well, we're about to find out.

0:03:49 > 0:03:52As part of the experiment, we've encouraged both swap families

0:03:52 > 0:03:54to go on a mini break.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58In Cardiff, regular campers Sarah and Freddie

0:03:58 > 0:04:01are going to take Bonnie and Jenni to Mid Wales,

0:04:01 > 0:04:04where ex-soldier Freddie is going to introduce them

0:04:04 > 0:04:07to the harsh delights of living off the land

0:04:07 > 0:04:10and push their desire for a healthier lifestyle to the limits.

0:04:11 > 0:04:13I've never been in a tent before,

0:04:13 > 0:04:17so I'm looking forward to that experience.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20I'm a bit nervous about sleeping in a forest overnight.

0:04:20 > 0:04:23If there's an axe murderer or something.

0:04:23 > 0:04:27Um... But apart from that, I'm quite excited as well.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30Remember, girls, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33Except perhaps forest-dwelling axe murderers.

0:04:33 > 0:04:35We're off.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39In Abersychan, regular Caravan Clubbers Warren and Helen

0:04:39 > 0:04:42are planning to introduce the Thompson sisters

0:04:42 > 0:04:44to the seaside charms of Porthcawl.

0:04:46 > 0:04:49But the question is, will Helen make full use

0:04:49 > 0:04:52of this box of fruit and veg she's decided to take,

0:04:52 > 0:04:55or will the allure of hot dogs and pink candyfloss

0:04:55 > 0:04:58see her falling back on old habits?

0:05:00 > 0:05:02Only time will tell.

0:05:02 > 0:05:04But whilst the caravaners motor to Porthcawl,

0:05:04 > 0:05:08on this Builth Wells campsite, the survivalists have arrived.

0:05:08 > 0:05:09Come on, then.

0:05:09 > 0:05:12Before the swap, Bonnie and Jenni's idea

0:05:12 > 0:05:13of experiencing the great outdoors

0:05:13 > 0:05:16was sitting in the hot tub at the bottom of their garden.

0:05:18 > 0:05:21Up in the rolling hills, Freddie's going to use his military background

0:05:21 > 0:05:25to show them the benefits of some brisk and free alfresco exercise.

0:05:27 > 0:05:29Starting with how quickly they can put up a tent

0:05:29 > 0:05:32before it and them are soaked through by the rain.

0:05:35 > 0:05:37- Bon, that's your side. - No, that goes that way!

0:05:37 > 0:05:40That goes that way, cos this is the door, I think.

0:05:40 > 0:05:41You're not listening, are you?

0:05:41 > 0:05:44- What are you doing?! - It's got to be of equal length!

0:05:44 > 0:05:48After six minutes and 42 seconds, Freddie's tent is military grade.

0:05:48 > 0:05:50Push it up, push it up, push it up!

0:05:50 > 0:05:53But the girls are lacking one essential army ingredient.

0:05:53 > 0:05:56We're not very good at teamwork.

0:05:56 > 0:05:57Ow!

0:05:57 > 0:05:58I think I just broke a nail.

0:05:58 > 0:06:00Which is why...

0:06:00 > 0:06:03Oh, crikey! It's like a paddling pool!

0:06:03 > 0:06:05..47 minutes later...

0:06:05 > 0:06:09My hair's wrecked, my make-up's wrecked, and my nails are wrecked.

0:06:09 > 0:06:11I just don't care any more.

0:06:11 > 0:06:13..they finally get there.

0:06:13 > 0:06:15- You've done it!- Wahey!- Kind of.

0:06:15 > 0:06:18Let's hope the afternoon yomp goes a bit smoother.

0:06:26 > 0:06:28In Porthcawl, meanwhile,

0:06:28 > 0:06:31things are a bit more chillaxed and home from home.

0:06:32 > 0:06:34The most important thing, kettle's on.

0:06:34 > 0:06:37Whilst Warren and the girls get on with the awning,

0:06:37 > 0:06:39Helen's in the kitchen.

0:06:39 > 0:06:42But is she going straight for the crisps and the biscuits?

0:06:42 > 0:06:44I'm going to do some lunch in a minute.

0:06:44 > 0:06:45I'm going to make a batch of fajitas,

0:06:45 > 0:06:49which is a traditional thing we do when we come away in the caravan,

0:06:49 > 0:06:52um...but, you know, we're going to have some healthy options as well.

0:06:52 > 0:06:54Today, I've brought some asparagus,

0:06:54 > 0:06:58which I'm going to wrap in Parma ham and then barbecue,

0:06:58 > 0:07:00and we'll do some chargrilled peppers as well.

0:07:00 > 0:07:04Rather than sort of going and looking for maybe some chips

0:07:04 > 0:07:06or something stodgy to go with it,

0:07:06 > 0:07:08we're going to go for a healthy option.

0:07:08 > 0:07:11And continuing this spirit of culinary adventure,

0:07:11 > 0:07:14Rosie's undertaking a new experience, too,

0:07:14 > 0:07:18preparing the raw chicken for the fajitas.

0:07:18 > 0:07:20It feels like jelly.

0:07:20 > 0:07:22It's really weird.

0:07:22 > 0:07:24But it's like...

0:07:24 > 0:07:27I don't know, you can't stop feeling it, it's...ugh!

0:07:29 > 0:07:32Do you reckon slugs feel like this?

0:07:33 > 0:07:38There's a healthy mollusc-textured lunch on the go in Porthcawl.

0:07:38 > 0:07:40Whilst in Builth, the weather's finally broken

0:07:40 > 0:07:43and they've got a wholesome hike on the menu.

0:07:43 > 0:07:45# I want to be your drill instructor. #

0:07:45 > 0:07:49- It's a good warm-up for your legs, Bonnie, this.- Yep.

0:07:49 > 0:07:50For a healthy lifestyle,

0:07:50 > 0:07:54experts recommend 30 minutes of brisk exercise every day.

0:07:54 > 0:07:56Happy campers!

0:07:56 > 0:08:00But for a long time now, Bonnie's had next to no exercise at all.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03I like a hike, I just haven't walked in about a year.

0:08:04 > 0:08:08Whilst it might not be the arduous army yomp that Freddie's used to,

0:08:08 > 0:08:10it's certainly a push for the girls.

0:08:10 > 0:08:13- It's a never-ending hill!- It'll end.

0:08:13 > 0:08:16- I'm boiling now.- You're boiling now?

0:08:16 > 0:08:19They're covering three miles in around 40 minutes.

0:08:19 > 0:08:21I can't really feel anything.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24You're numb? Bonnie's gone numb!

0:08:25 > 0:08:29Ah, look! There's our campsite. Ah, isn't that pretty?

0:08:29 > 0:08:31But are they feeling any benefit?

0:08:31 > 0:08:35I think changing our activities is making a massive change in myself.

0:08:35 > 0:08:40We wouldn't normally do half as much stuff we've done this week at all.

0:08:40 > 0:08:44It'd be more relaxed, like...watching television,

0:08:44 > 0:08:48going in the hot tub, going for a drive, say.

0:08:48 > 0:08:50So there's a massive difference.

0:08:56 > 0:08:59Meanwhile, in Porthcawl, Helen's conversion to healthy living

0:08:59 > 0:09:01might not yet have got to the point

0:09:01 > 0:09:02where she's thrown out the frying pan,

0:09:02 > 0:09:06but it's definitely gaining in zeal.

0:09:06 > 0:09:08I'm being very mindful about portion control.

0:09:08 > 0:09:11Normally, the compulsion is that if I've got that many asparagus,

0:09:11 > 0:09:14I would need to wrap every single one of them in Parma ham

0:09:14 > 0:09:15and cook every single one,

0:09:15 > 0:09:18but I'm trying to convince myself

0:09:18 > 0:09:21that, actually, it's OK to leave some for the next meal.

0:09:21 > 0:09:23But it is quite difficult.

0:09:23 > 0:09:27In a society where we're brought up to be told not to waste anything,

0:09:27 > 0:09:29it is quite a challenge, actually.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32Because I can remember my grandparents saying,

0:09:32 > 0:09:34"There's children in the world who haven't got any food,

0:09:34 > 0:09:36"so use up everything, eat up everything."

0:09:36 > 0:09:39So I'm trying to remember it's OK to leave it until the next meal.

0:09:39 > 0:09:42It's not going to cause any problem. So I'm getting there, I think.

0:09:42 > 0:09:45And Helen's not just getting there on the food front.

0:09:45 > 0:09:49Both she and Warren are getting physical, too.

0:09:49 > 0:09:51LAUGHTER

0:09:56 > 0:09:59Oh, look, you need to get it, Warren!

0:09:59 > 0:10:00Helen! Helen!

0:10:02 > 0:10:03CHEERING

0:10:05 > 0:10:07Dinner.

0:10:08 > 0:10:10If my cardiologist could see me now!

0:10:11 > 0:10:13He'd have a heart attack.

0:10:13 > 0:10:17And after all that vigorous exercise, how about refuelling

0:10:17 > 0:10:21on some healthy low-fat white meat and fresh vegetable fajitas?

0:10:23 > 0:10:26Not so sure about the fizzy drinks and lashings of sour cream,

0:10:26 > 0:10:28but they could always burn it off with more Swingball.

0:10:31 > 0:10:32And whilst Helen's trying to address

0:10:32 > 0:10:35her dependence on unhealthy convenience foods,

0:10:35 > 0:10:39in Builth, the Thompsons are about to go to the other extreme.

0:10:39 > 0:10:41Guys, we're all getting a bit hungry.

0:10:41 > 0:10:43Should we go and catch our own dinner for tonight?

0:10:43 > 0:10:46Do some fishing? See if we can catch a big trout?

0:10:46 > 0:10:48GIRLS LAUGH

0:10:48 > 0:10:51- All right, Jenni?- Yeah.- Go fishing?

0:10:51 > 0:10:53- Yeah, I'll try it.- Good.

0:10:54 > 0:10:56When they go off camping,

0:10:56 > 0:10:59Freddie and Sarah regularly forage and fish for their food.

0:10:59 > 0:11:00And without the easy temptation

0:11:00 > 0:11:03of a takeaway or supermarket for miles around,

0:11:03 > 0:11:06it's a great opportunity for Bonnie and Jenni

0:11:06 > 0:11:10to have a go at sourcing their supper the way nature intended.

0:11:11 > 0:11:12I am not happy.

0:11:12 > 0:11:15I can't even believe I've been persuaded to do this.

0:11:15 > 0:11:17Or not.

0:11:17 > 0:11:20Jenni, you're on a dry fly, you fish upstream.

0:11:20 > 0:11:22And, Bonnie, you're on a wet fly.

0:11:23 > 0:11:26Food experts say we don't eat enough fish,

0:11:26 > 0:11:29which is not just rich in protein, vitamins and minerals,

0:11:29 > 0:11:32it is also a natural source of Omega 3,

0:11:32 > 0:11:34which is very good for our brains,

0:11:34 > 0:11:38making fish, quite literally, food for thought.

0:11:40 > 0:11:41- Ooh!- You've got a fish.

0:11:41 > 0:11:44- Jenni!- It's not big.

0:11:44 > 0:11:46Jenni's just caught in her first cast -

0:11:46 > 0:11:49hold your rod up - a brown trout.

0:11:49 > 0:11:54I am really excited because I've caught a fish.

0:11:54 > 0:11:56But it's a fish that's too small for the pot.

0:11:56 > 0:11:58And away he goes.

0:11:58 > 0:12:02And that's the inconvenience of non-convenience food.

0:12:02 > 0:12:05You can't just grab it off the shelf and go.

0:12:05 > 0:12:07I'm really bored.

0:12:09 > 0:12:13In Porthcawl, they're also embracing the outdoor life - kind of.

0:12:13 > 0:12:1529.602.

0:12:15 > 0:12:17They've gone geocaching,

0:12:17 > 0:12:21which is like a treasure hunt with sat-navs and cars.

0:12:21 > 0:12:22Yeah, OK.

0:12:24 > 0:12:26It's a regular hobby of Helen and Warren's

0:12:26 > 0:12:30and although they usually go geocaching solely by car,

0:12:30 > 0:12:33today they're also incorporating a bit of physical exercise.

0:12:35 > 0:12:37Go, Helen! Go, Helen!

0:12:37 > 0:12:39The basic premise of geocaching

0:12:39 > 0:12:41is that you are given a set of coordinates to locate...

0:12:41 > 0:12:4451, 29, 627.

0:12:44 > 0:12:46..and some riddles to solve.

0:12:46 > 0:12:48If it's a G, then it's probably a T.

0:12:48 > 0:12:53- And an L is a Y, so the first word is "try", got it?- Oh.

0:12:53 > 0:12:56And even if you're pretty clueless...

0:12:56 > 0:12:57Which direction are we heading?

0:12:59 > 0:13:00..it's good clean fun.

0:13:00 > 0:13:02- We're enjoying it. - We're enjoying this.

0:13:02 > 0:13:04It's like going on an adventure.

0:13:04 > 0:13:07- And if you can get over the hiccups...- What's the code? Helen?

0:13:07 > 0:13:10Where am I? That's a very good question.

0:13:10 > 0:13:11...and the hurdles...

0:13:11 > 0:13:15- I'm stuck again!- Wait, wait.

0:13:15 > 0:13:18..and you finally find your little treasure...

0:13:18 > 0:13:20Got it!

0:13:20 > 0:13:22..it even comes with a little prize.

0:13:23 > 0:13:25"Congratulations,

0:13:25 > 0:13:30"you've won tickets to the magical Coney Beach amusement park."

0:13:30 > 0:13:32Whoo!

0:13:32 > 0:13:33Brilliant.

0:13:33 > 0:13:35What do you like to do at the fair?

0:13:35 > 0:13:37Go on rides.

0:13:37 > 0:13:39- Go on rides? Scary rides?- Yeah.

0:13:41 > 0:13:42Oh, no.

0:13:45 > 0:13:48In Builth, the fly-fishers are back on dry land.

0:13:48 > 0:13:51It's not been an altogether successful expedition.

0:13:51 > 0:13:53There might be fish on the barbie,

0:13:53 > 0:13:56but ironically they've come from the shop.

0:13:57 > 0:14:00We all caught smaller brown trout in the river today.

0:14:00 > 0:14:02Unfortunately, they weren't of suitable size

0:14:02 > 0:14:05in order to keep and eat tonight,

0:14:05 > 0:14:07so we've had to rely on the local fishmonger

0:14:07 > 0:14:10supplying us with our fish.

0:14:10 > 0:14:13Furthermore, watching Freddie prepare their supper

0:14:13 > 0:14:17is threatening to put Bonnie and Jenni off fish for life.

0:14:17 > 0:14:19- Insert the knife.- Ugh!

0:14:20 > 0:14:23That's disgusting.

0:14:23 > 0:14:25I think it's cos we haven't seen

0:14:25 > 0:14:28what's on the inside of a fish before,

0:14:28 > 0:14:31and we're just shocked by what we see.

0:14:31 > 0:14:33Ugh!

0:14:33 > 0:14:38In a supermarket, you wouldn't see all the gross insides,

0:14:38 > 0:14:41and you wouldn't have to do that yourself unless you chose to.

0:14:41 > 0:14:45That's all his internals gone.

0:14:45 > 0:14:48- I don't think I'll be able to eat that one!- No!

0:14:49 > 0:14:53Freddie's hoping the sumptuous smell of barbecued fresh trout

0:14:53 > 0:14:55will help change the girls' minds.

0:14:55 > 0:14:57Here's a portion coming in, guys.

0:14:57 > 0:15:00But can he win over Jenni, a notoriously fussy eater?

0:15:00 > 0:15:05- That looks good.- This is the brown trout. This is the rainbow trout.

0:15:05 > 0:15:10- It smells!- Right, come on now. - It smells!

0:15:10 > 0:15:12Why do I have to have it next to me?

0:15:12 > 0:15:13We're all going to have it next to us.

0:15:13 > 0:15:17Why don't you taste a bit? Are you going to try a bit, Jen, of fish?

0:15:17 > 0:15:19I'm not looking forward to this.

0:15:19 > 0:15:22- It's nice!- Here we go.

0:15:26 > 0:15:28Yeah, I don't like that.

0:15:28 > 0:15:31- What don't you like about it? - It's too strong.

0:15:33 > 0:15:35- It's not strong at all.- It is!

0:15:35 > 0:15:37What's strong about it? What do you mean by strong?

0:15:37 > 0:15:40- Fishy.- It's fish!

0:15:40 > 0:15:42Not for me. Nope.

0:15:42 > 0:15:46- Try the other one.- Nope.

0:15:46 > 0:15:48It's official, I don't like fish.

0:15:48 > 0:15:51- Just give it another go. - I'm not, no.

0:15:52 > 0:15:55Well, make sure you fill up on salad and potatoes, then,

0:15:55 > 0:15:57and you can be veggie for the night, eh?

0:15:57 > 0:16:00- Yeah, I'll be a veggie for the night.- Okey-dokey.

0:16:04 > 0:16:07And whilst they've been having their fill of fishy fun in Builth,

0:16:07 > 0:16:10in Porthcawl, they've been hitting the fairground rides.

0:16:12 > 0:16:15After limbering up on a diet of Dodgems...

0:16:17 > 0:16:19..cuddly toys

0:16:19 > 0:16:20and ghost trains...

0:16:22 > 0:16:24..Rosie and Eva persuade Warren

0:16:24 > 0:16:26to undertake an alternative weight-loss regime.

0:16:28 > 0:16:30Called the gravity gut buster,

0:16:30 > 0:16:33it involves hitting enough high-velocity fairground rides

0:16:33 > 0:16:34to make you feel so sick

0:16:34 > 0:16:38that you completely lose your appetite for a week.

0:16:41 > 0:16:42Helen is excused this torment

0:16:42 > 0:16:46as she has a heart condition serious enough to require surgery,

0:16:46 > 0:16:49treatment she can't have until she loses weight.

0:16:49 > 0:16:51So it's just as well they keep moving past

0:16:51 > 0:16:53those on-site easy temptations.

0:16:56 > 0:16:59But no fun-fair visit's complete without winning...

0:16:59 > 0:17:01Yes!

0:17:01 > 0:17:03..a goldfish.

0:17:03 > 0:17:06See? The other team are not the only team who can go fishing.

0:17:08 > 0:17:10And they leave the fair with their winnings bagged,

0:17:10 > 0:17:13and all hot dogs, candyfloss and toffee apples avoided.

0:17:17 > 0:17:20But after a great day full of good intentions...

0:17:23 > 0:17:26..they fall at the final chip shop.

0:17:26 > 0:17:31Um, can I have a small portion of chips with fish, please?

0:17:31 > 0:17:35Which they then take back to the caravan,

0:17:35 > 0:17:38where Helen and Warren, chip-shop visit aside,

0:17:38 > 0:17:41can reflect on what's been a pivotal day.

0:17:41 > 0:17:42It has been a good day.

0:17:42 > 0:17:46It's ironic, really, because the girls think probably

0:17:46 > 0:17:50that they're having a not very active week, but I've never done so much.

0:17:50 > 0:17:54- Yeah, it's been pretty hectic, hasn't it?!- I'm really tired.

0:17:54 > 0:17:57It's sort of mixed feelings, really,

0:17:57 > 0:18:01because it's quite a stark reminder for me that I can't go on the rides

0:18:01 > 0:18:03because I've got a heart condition,

0:18:03 > 0:18:05and again it sort of reinforces, you know,

0:18:05 > 0:18:08I'd like to be fitter and active, lose a bit of weight.

0:18:08 > 0:18:11I can have this done, then I can do all those things again.

0:18:11 > 0:18:14But, you know, we have managed to eat healthier...

0:18:14 > 0:18:17What we're about to indulge in.

0:18:17 > 0:18:20..apart from the curry and chips behind me.

0:18:20 > 0:18:22It's a well-deserved treat, I think.

0:18:22 > 0:18:23It is a well-deserved treat,

0:18:23 > 0:18:27and maybe, because we've been so active today, you know,

0:18:27 > 0:18:31perhaps the impact of having curry and chips as a treat

0:18:31 > 0:18:33- isn't so significant. - No, indeed, yeah, I agree.

0:18:38 > 0:18:39It's lovely.

0:18:39 > 0:18:42I'm quite happy with the chicken and chips.

0:18:42 > 0:18:44We did quite a bit of exercise today,

0:18:44 > 0:18:48walking around looking for the geocaching stuff.

0:18:48 > 0:18:51And the fruit salad this morning for breakfast.

0:18:51 > 0:18:53I thought that was yesterday.

0:18:53 > 0:18:55I know, it feels like yesterday.

0:18:55 > 0:18:59And the walking around the rides today and then Swingball.

0:18:59 > 0:19:01I think we did well.

0:19:01 > 0:19:04I've never been so tired in my life.

0:19:04 > 0:19:07But it's been a good day, it's been a lovely day.

0:19:12 > 0:19:15The morning after the camping night before,

0:19:15 > 0:19:17and it's also the final day of the swap.

0:19:17 > 0:19:20In Porthcawl, it's time to head back home,

0:19:20 > 0:19:22though not before Rosie's woken up to the realisation

0:19:22 > 0:19:25that the junk food she's been gorging on all week

0:19:25 > 0:19:28has left her not only lethargic,

0:19:28 > 0:19:31but - horror of teenage horrors - she's got spots!

0:19:31 > 0:19:36I'm starting to see the side effects of all these takeaways.

0:19:36 > 0:19:42My skin's going greasy and I've come out in spots this morning.

0:19:42 > 0:19:43I'm having a break-out.

0:19:44 > 0:19:45Hmm!

0:19:47 > 0:19:49I can't cope with this anymore.

0:19:49 > 0:19:52Healthy foods today, lots of fruit today.

0:19:54 > 0:19:57Whilst fresh fruit is the order of the final day for Rosie...

0:19:59 > 0:20:02..in Cardiff, Bonnie and Jenni are enjoying

0:20:02 > 0:20:04more fresh outdoor activities.

0:20:06 > 0:20:07More walking...

0:20:10 > 0:20:12..more free outdoor exercise...

0:20:13 > 0:20:16Go on, Jenni! Go in!

0:20:16 > 0:20:18- ..More...- It's a hard choice.

0:20:18 > 0:20:19..ice cream?!

0:20:19 > 0:20:21Can I have a chocoholic heaven, please?

0:20:21 > 0:20:23Hold on a minute, Sarah.

0:20:23 > 0:20:25I don't really have a moral dilemma here,

0:20:25 > 0:20:28cos we've got the good with the bad.

0:20:28 > 0:20:30We had a nice walk. That's just a nice treat.

0:20:30 > 0:20:32If you are going to have a treat,

0:20:32 > 0:20:34you do need to do some exercise to make up for it,

0:20:34 > 0:20:37so that's what I'm planning on doing in the future.

0:20:37 > 0:20:39And that future starts now,

0:20:39 > 0:20:41with an activity Bonnie hasn't done in years.

0:20:50 > 0:20:51Aaah!

0:21:00 > 0:21:03And whilst everyone's having good, clean fun in Cardiff,

0:21:03 > 0:21:07in Abersychan, Helen and Warren's commitment to a healthier lifestyle

0:21:07 > 0:21:10is about to be sorely tested.

0:21:10 > 0:21:14This could be a whole new positive experience for us

0:21:14 > 0:21:15and the horse.

0:21:15 > 0:21:18- Hmm. - HE CHUCKLES

0:21:18 > 0:21:20I am nervous.

0:21:20 > 0:21:24As the activity for the day, Eva and Rosie have decided

0:21:24 > 0:21:27they should all saddle up and go trekking.

0:21:27 > 0:21:28Oh, Molly!

0:21:28 > 0:21:32Helen hasn't mounted a horse since she was a teenager,

0:21:32 > 0:21:36and for Warren this is a completely new and holy undesired experience.

0:21:36 > 0:21:40- Feels like a fish out of water, I think.- Oh, my God!

0:21:40 > 0:21:44You know when you tense up every muscle in your body?

0:21:44 > 0:21:48That's what I feel like now, really tense.

0:21:48 > 0:21:51It's scarier than I remember it, but that's probably

0:21:51 > 0:21:55because I'm older and the horse is bigger, but I feel fine.

0:21:55 > 0:21:58HE LAUGHS

0:21:58 > 0:22:02It's exercising some long unused muscles.

0:22:02 > 0:22:03I can feel the muscles in my legs,

0:22:03 > 0:22:08but, no, I didn't think I'd enjoy it quite as much as I have, actually.

0:22:08 > 0:22:11It's brill, really brilliant.

0:22:11 > 0:22:13Warren's doing good for this first time.

0:22:13 > 0:22:15HE MUTTERS

0:22:15 > 0:22:19Getting Helen back on the horse, maybe she'll want to ride again.

0:22:19 > 0:22:24And Warren, maybe he'll start riding with Helen.

0:22:24 > 0:22:26Whoo!

0:22:26 > 0:22:28HE LAUGHS

0:22:33 > 0:22:37I reckon they should do it more often.

0:22:37 > 0:22:40It was good, I might do that again, actually, saying that.

0:22:40 > 0:22:43We could come with the kids.

0:22:43 > 0:22:45Helen's done more exercise in the last 24 hours

0:22:45 > 0:22:49than she has in the previous decade.

0:22:49 > 0:22:51Jenni and Bonnie have had more healthy food

0:22:51 > 0:22:54and activities in the last week than they have in years.

0:22:55 > 0:23:00And Rosie and Eva have eaten enough cakes for a lifetime's sugar rush.

0:23:04 > 0:23:07But the experiment is now drawing to a close.

0:23:07 > 0:23:09And on the last evening of the swap,

0:23:09 > 0:23:11it's time to reflect on what the week has meant.

0:23:13 > 0:23:17In Cardiff, Bonnie and Jenni have offered to make tea.

0:23:17 > 0:23:19Utilising all of the good habits they have learnt

0:23:19 > 0:23:21in their week with the Thompsons,

0:23:21 > 0:23:25they're cooking up a Whewell family favourite with a difference.

0:23:26 > 0:23:29This dish is called Pasta La Vista,

0:23:29 > 0:23:35so it has chicken breasts, leaks, peppers, onions and mushrooms.

0:23:35 > 0:23:39And then, instead of the cream, we're going to use creme fraiche.

0:23:39 > 0:23:42It's got much less calories, it's got much less fat.

0:23:42 > 0:23:45It's the healthier option.

0:23:45 > 0:23:48And what else will the girls take away from this week?

0:23:48 > 0:23:53I think I've learnt myself that I'm up for a challenge, um,

0:23:53 > 0:23:56I don't give up when the going gets tough, I suppose,

0:23:56 > 0:24:02and I can learn how to put health into my lifestyle as well as fun.

0:24:02 > 0:24:06I've been afraid of being...

0:24:06 > 0:24:10becoming overweight for a... a few years,

0:24:10 > 0:24:14so this is the time when I can stop and start a new lifestyle,

0:24:14 > 0:24:18start a new diet, and I think it'll help a lot.

0:24:19 > 0:24:21It is sad that I've got to this point,

0:24:21 > 0:24:23but I've let myself get to this point.

0:24:23 > 0:24:25It's not just everyone else's fault.

0:24:25 > 0:24:27You know, so I hold myself completely at blame.

0:24:27 > 0:24:30If I had wanted to change, I should have,

0:24:30 > 0:24:32but I think now is the turning point.

0:24:32 > 0:24:36I think now I'm still young enough to change something,

0:24:36 > 0:24:38and Jenni's young enough to change something

0:24:38 > 0:24:40about what's going to happen in our lives,

0:24:40 > 0:24:42and I think now is the perfect chance.

0:24:43 > 0:24:48In Abersychan, there have been big realisations for Helen, too.

0:24:48 > 0:24:51You know, I don't need to be told that I need to lose weight.

0:24:51 > 0:24:53I can see that quite clearly.

0:24:53 > 0:24:57I'm quite acutely aware of that in terms of my health problems.

0:24:58 > 0:25:00But actually understanding that

0:25:00 > 0:25:03and being able to put that in practice is a very different thing,

0:25:03 > 0:25:07and that, I think, has been the difference of this week.

0:25:07 > 0:25:10Rather than being told and thinking, "Yeah, I know that.

0:25:10 > 0:25:13"It's common sense, you know, it's not rocket science,"

0:25:13 > 0:25:16actually being in the moment and actually doing that stuff,

0:25:16 > 0:25:19and actually feeling pretty good about yourself.

0:25:19 > 0:25:24The understanding that goes with that, I think, is really powerful.

0:25:26 > 0:25:29The following morning, the swap comes to an end

0:25:29 > 0:25:31and the families were reunited.

0:25:33 > 0:25:36- Do I get a kiss?- No.

0:25:36 > 0:25:38But that was eight weeks ago, when the Whewells were still

0:25:38 > 0:25:41stuffed full of good intentions and healthy food.

0:25:43 > 0:25:45So what has happened since?

0:25:45 > 0:25:48Have they slipped back into their old indulgences?

0:25:48 > 0:25:52That oh-so-appealing life of hot tubs, BBQs...

0:25:52 > 0:25:54- Burgers? - ..and rich takeaway food?

0:25:56 > 0:25:58Well...

0:25:59 > 0:26:02I haven't had a chocolate bar for two months.

0:26:02 > 0:26:05I haven't eaten a packet of crisps for two months.

0:26:05 > 0:26:09I haven't had that many takeaways since being home. I think two, maybe?

0:26:09 > 0:26:10I've certainly altered portion size.

0:26:10 > 0:26:13Lots more fruit and vegetables in the house than there were.

0:26:13 > 0:26:15I think my mum's changed quite a bit.

0:26:15 > 0:26:17She's taking salads to work.

0:26:17 > 0:26:19Definitely the way I look at food has changed.

0:26:19 > 0:26:21I'm tending to go for the healthier option.

0:26:21 > 0:26:25In college, you know, they have burger and chips, pizza and chips,

0:26:25 > 0:26:27which is stuff I would have gone for before.

0:26:27 > 0:26:31And I'm having jacket potato with salad, or a jacket potato with beans.

0:26:31 > 0:26:34- Is that sparkling water? - Yeah, do you want some?

0:26:34 > 0:26:37I'm trying loads of new things now,

0:26:37 > 0:26:39except for fish, cos I really don't like it.

0:26:39 > 0:26:43Jenni came back positively evangelical.

0:26:43 > 0:26:45Jenni was a nightmare when she came back.

0:26:45 > 0:26:47I've been a bit more stricter with my mum and dad.

0:26:47 > 0:26:50She had us doing meal plans...

0:26:50 > 0:26:53She's drew up a menu for the week, that's stuck on the fridge now,

0:26:53 > 0:26:54so we do try and stick to that.

0:26:54 > 0:26:57If they say, "Oh, can we have a takeaway or something?"

0:26:57 > 0:26:58I'll be like, "No."

0:26:58 > 0:27:04We're been doing a lot more activities than we used to.

0:27:04 > 0:27:06Since the swap, I've been going to the gym.

0:27:07 > 0:27:09If you told me before the swap

0:27:09 > 0:27:11that I would get up on a Sunday morning,

0:27:11 > 0:27:14cycle 14 miles and enjoy it,

0:27:14 > 0:27:17and then have enough energy to go on and do stuff the rest of the day,

0:27:17 > 0:27:21I would never have believed you, so that's been a significant change.

0:27:21 > 0:27:24In terms of the medical condition, it's still there.

0:27:24 > 0:27:27I'm definitely nearer having it done

0:27:27 > 0:27:28because the weight is starting to go,

0:27:28 > 0:27:31and obviously I think, because I'm now fitter,

0:27:31 > 0:27:35I think my recovery time is obviously going to be much better.

0:27:37 > 0:27:39My body shape's changing, I know that,

0:27:39 > 0:27:40because I've lost a lot of weight.

0:27:40 > 0:27:43I've had a couple of tattoos done.

0:27:43 > 0:27:45It's my name and that's Helen in Klingon.

0:27:45 > 0:27:46HE LAUGHS

0:27:46 > 0:27:49Everybody said, "You're having a mid-life crisis."

0:27:49 > 0:27:50And I said "No, I'm not.

0:27:50 > 0:27:53"It's just my whole different outlook on life, I guess."

0:27:53 > 0:27:55I know I've lost weight,

0:27:55 > 0:27:58and I think other people have noticed as well,

0:27:58 > 0:28:02so that makes me feel happier in myself.

0:28:02 > 0:28:04I'm so glad I did it.

0:28:05 > 0:28:06I definitely see a change,

0:28:06 > 0:28:10and I hope that I can take that on with me further in life.
