0:02:41 > 0:02:43Amanda is there to greet them.

0:02:45 > 0:02:50Acknowledging a problem in the first place is often half the battle,

0:02:50 > 0:02:52and although it's not easy,

0:02:52 > 0:02:56single mum Rosie from Portrush is facing some difficult emotions.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59'Do I blame myself for being this weight?

0:03:04 > 0:03:09'When I look in the mirror I do not like what I see.'

0:03:09 > 0:03:13And I know all the right things to say to myself to make myself better,

0:03:13 > 0:03:15but, at the end of the day,

0:03:15 > 0:03:19the bottom line is, no, I am not happy with the way I look.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23'There are some shops where things fit me perfectly,

0:03:23 > 0:03:25'then that's the only ones I shop in.

0:03:25 > 0:03:30'but it's hard when you're overweight.'

0:03:30 > 0:03:32It's a bit...

0:03:32 > 0:03:34It makes me feel a bit down.

0:03:35 > 0:03:36Hellooo!

0:03:36 > 0:03:40Next onto the island are family of four, the Toners.

0:03:40 > 0:03:44- How you doing, Cara? - Great.- Nice to see you again.

0:03:44 > 0:03:47Johnny has recently married Cara,

0:03:47 > 0:03:51mum to Ryan, 12, and Ellie, nine.

0:03:51 > 0:03:53'I've got so much weight to lose,

0:03:53 > 0:03:56'it's like I don't know where to start.'

0:03:56 > 0:04:00It's like climbing a mountain when you're at the bottom of it.

0:04:00 > 0:04:01Like getting that start on it.

0:04:01 > 0:04:05I just feel it's too far to climb.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08'And, for the children, it's one thing me having weight issues,

0:04:08 > 0:04:13'but I have suddenly realised that my children are that way as well,

0:04:13 > 0:04:17'and that's really upsetting.'

0:04:17 > 0:04:20So, I'm dreading the change, but it has to be done.

0:04:24 > 0:04:29Last to arrive are Nick, Isobel and Rachael from Dundonald.

0:04:29 > 0:04:33A family desperate to end their intense love affair with takeaways.

0:04:33 > 0:04:38'Chippy, Chinese, Indian, pizzas, so much choice out there!

0:04:38 > 0:04:40'A variety of carry outs you eat every day.'

0:04:40 > 0:04:43We eat something different every day.

0:04:43 > 0:04:46Far too easy.

0:04:46 > 0:04:49I just remember Mum saying, "If you don't lose weight, girl,

0:04:49 > 0:04:53"you're never going to be around whenever those kids grow up,"

0:04:53 > 0:04:56and I suppose that's always been in the back of my head -

0:04:56 > 0:04:58a wee warning bell.

0:04:58 > 0:05:03And, ideally, we're at that stage now wee warning bells going off big time!

0:05:03 > 0:05:05And its time to do something about it.

0:05:08 > 0:05:10Heading deep into the woods,

0:05:10 > 0:05:14our three families leave their home comforts and old lives

0:05:14 > 0:05:17further and further behind.

0:05:17 > 0:05:19Amanda and her team of experts are waiting.

0:05:19 > 0:05:24There is a very distinct link between emotions and how much somebody eats.

0:05:24 > 0:05:25Or why they eat.

0:05:25 > 0:05:27'Stresses and strains in life

0:05:27 > 0:05:32'can often lead to people stuffing down emotion with food.'

0:05:32 > 0:05:34Often you're going way back, years and years and years

0:05:34 > 0:05:37trying to find out why they've picked up that food habit.

0:05:37 > 0:05:42Just want to take this opportunity to introduce the rest of the expert team

0:05:42 > 0:05:46that will be working with you over the next seven days.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49We can't read minds, at least if we could we're not going to tell you!

0:05:49 > 0:05:51But we need you to be open with us.

0:05:51 > 0:05:55The more you speak to us, let us know what's going on with you,

0:05:55 > 0:05:57the more that we can help.

0:05:57 > 0:06:00Now, at times you'll be out of your comfort zone,

0:06:00 > 0:06:01it will be a bit challenging,

0:06:01 > 0:06:05but what we're aiming to do is really set a road map.

0:06:05 > 0:06:09Not just for today, not just for this week, but for the rest of your lives.

0:06:09 > 0:06:14So, this can be the moment in which you change your life.

0:06:14 > 0:06:16I'm John, I'm your trainer for the week.

0:06:16 > 0:06:21I'm here HOPEFULLY to support you and help you get your goals and achieve it

0:06:21 > 0:06:26and more importantly give you ideas you take away from this to help get your fitness on track.

0:06:26 > 0:06:29So, I'm Rachel, I'm one of the psychologists here.

0:06:29 > 0:06:34My main focus for the week is to help you think about your relationships.

0:06:34 > 0:06:37Whether that's relationships with food and exercise

0:06:37 > 0:06:41and importantly your relationships with each other.

0:06:41 > 0:06:45I'm Raman Kapur, I'm going to be working with the adults,

0:06:45 > 0:06:47and the main thing I want from the adults

0:06:47 > 0:06:51is to be able to say what you think and feel - spontaneously.

0:06:51 > 0:06:52My job is to work with that

0:06:52 > 0:06:56and then in the individual sessions I'll follow that up.

0:06:56 > 0:06:59And the other piece of good news we have got you all some gifts.

0:06:59 > 0:07:02If you'd like to head over, there's some crates there

0:07:02 > 0:07:10and that's full of some goodies for the week ahead and, er, welcome!

0:07:10 > 0:07:12The boxes hold clues to what lies ahead.

0:07:12 > 0:07:15Exercise is definitely on the agenda,

0:07:15 > 0:07:17and Nick's already making jokes.

0:07:17 > 0:07:20Imagine giving fat people a skipping rope?

0:07:22 > 0:07:24Boing! Boing!

0:07:26 > 0:07:29Nick, Isobel and Rachael are just recently back from holiday,

0:07:29 > 0:07:32and Isobel recalls an embarrassing moment.

0:07:32 > 0:07:37Coming home from France and the girl at the boarding desk asked me,

0:07:37 > 0:07:39"I need to ask you, are you pregnant?"

0:07:41 > 0:07:45You know? And I thought, "That's it, I'm never eating again!"

0:07:49 > 0:07:52Nick and Isobel have a real taste for takeaway.

0:07:52 > 0:07:56It's become much more than an occasional treat,

0:07:56 > 0:07:59and Nick's really worried about the future.

0:07:59 > 0:08:02'Although she's only ten now, maybe in 20 years' time'

0:08:02 > 0:08:04when she does decide to walk down the aisle,

0:08:04 > 0:08:07I'd like to be the one to walk her down the aisle

0:08:07 > 0:08:09and at the present rate of going

0:08:09 > 0:08:11I'm not going to be around at that point.

0:08:13 > 0:08:18Amanda has made a home visit to each of the families in the weeks leading to the retreat.

0:08:20 > 0:08:24How long have you had a weight problem? How long would you say you've felt overweight?

0:08:24 > 0:08:28I'm 43 this coming birthday, so, about 42 years.

0:08:28 > 0:08:31I joined a gym and I went for a class.

0:08:31 > 0:08:33It was a half-hour class, lasted 15 minutes

0:08:33 > 0:08:37and felt, you know, I need to push myself here and I'm not

0:08:37 > 0:08:39and feeling I can't do it.

0:08:39 > 0:08:42It was easier just to quit, go and have a shower

0:08:42 > 0:08:43and cry while I was in the shower.

0:08:45 > 0:08:49Like many children, Rachael spends a lot of time in front of the TV,

0:08:49 > 0:08:51often with a snack,

0:08:51 > 0:08:54and when it does come to meal times it seems she's still hungry.

0:08:54 > 0:08:58Rach, do you want some more? Seconds? Help yourself, do you want this?

0:08:58 > 0:09:02'Possibly something to do with portion size is niggling away at me.

0:09:02 > 0:09:07'Maybe we shouldn't be feeding her as big a portion as she gets.'

0:09:07 > 0:09:10I'm going to stop you there cos see when you say the, "we"?

0:09:10 > 0:09:12It's You!

0:09:12 > 0:09:16- Well, thanks!- You know, we have had that argument plenty of times,

0:09:16 > 0:09:20but I've seen you dishing up food and I'm saying, "Don't just give her...",

0:09:20 > 0:09:24if she's hungry, by all means and she's still got some room...

0:09:24 > 0:09:26but she'll maybe have seconds

0:09:26 > 0:09:30- and then she'll reach for the chocolate biscuit! - That was my next statement,

0:09:30 > 0:09:32was going to be that if you give her a smaller portion,

0:09:32 > 0:09:35she eats it and asks for more.

0:09:40 > 0:09:42'The only tops I like is baggy ones

0:09:42 > 0:09:45'cos if they're really tight I don't really like them.'

0:09:45 > 0:09:50I always feel that I am uncomfortable with...

0:09:50 > 0:09:53My mum says I've got...puppy fat,

0:09:53 > 0:09:56but sometimes I just don't believe her,

0:09:56 > 0:10:01sometimes it's a just THING that I think is my fault for doing it.

0:10:03 > 0:10:08I have a terrible image of...

0:10:08 > 0:10:09the pointing and the laughing,

0:10:09 > 0:10:12and there's a behind-the-back snickering,

0:10:12 > 0:10:13"Look at the fat family".

0:10:13 > 0:10:18And I hide behind bravado and bluff

0:10:18 > 0:10:23and I try and...hide behind my personality...

0:10:23 > 0:10:25a lot.

0:10:25 > 0:10:28Rather than to be seen to be...

0:10:28 > 0:10:30As the, jolly fat bloke,

0:10:30 > 0:10:32is the mask that I wear.

0:10:32 > 0:10:35Behind the mask, I'm not really the jolly fat bloke at all.

0:10:35 > 0:10:36I'm just the fat bloke.

0:10:43 > 0:10:47There will be food on the menu this week,

0:10:47 > 0:10:50but it's very different from what the families are used to.

0:10:50 > 0:10:54You've got to taste everything and if you don't like it you don't need to eat it.

0:10:54 > 0:10:57- BOTH: Er, no.- No, we've got to shake on it. That's the deal.

0:10:57 > 0:11:01- No, I'm no shaking on it.- That's the deal, come on, get your hand out.

0:11:01 > 0:11:03Oh, look, we just made our deal.

0:11:03 > 0:11:05Here we go.

0:11:05 > 0:11:08Chef Sue and her team are working closely with Amanda

0:11:08 > 0:11:11to deliver tasty, nutritionally balanced meals,

0:11:11 > 0:11:13including today's healthy barbecue.

0:11:13 > 0:11:16It's Ryan, isn't it? You know what I am going to ask you to do?

0:11:16 > 0:11:18Put some on your plate.

0:11:18 > 0:11:23And I'm going to give you a TINY bit, just so it looks pretty.

0:11:23 > 0:11:26- OK?- Yeah.- Little bit of tomato?

0:11:26 > 0:11:30- Dressing?- There's a surprising amount of food on offer.

0:11:30 > 0:11:32The high fat content of ready meals and takeaways

0:11:32 > 0:11:37has been replaced with nutritious vegetables, lean meat and fish.

0:11:37 > 0:11:40Designed to be filling and what the body needs.

0:11:42 > 0:11:45But not everyone's enjoying it.

0:11:45 > 0:11:49It was terrible, really,

0:11:49 > 0:11:53but I'm sure, maybe tomorrow will be a better day. Hopefully.

0:11:55 > 0:11:56With lunch over,

0:11:56 > 0:11:59the families finally get to see where they're going to be living

0:11:59 > 0:12:01for the next seven days.

0:12:04 > 0:12:06Ellie, balcony, quickly!

0:12:06 > 0:12:09Oh, it's beautiful.

0:12:10 > 0:12:13- Very nice, very nice. - I'm loving this!

0:12:13 > 0:12:16I'm really loving this!

0:12:16 > 0:12:17Wow!

0:12:17 > 0:12:20- Do you like it?- Yes.

0:12:20 > 0:12:21Isn't it amazing?

0:12:23 > 0:12:25We'll be very comfortable here.

0:12:38 > 0:12:43After the recent wedding, Johnny is keen to support Cara and the kids,

0:12:43 > 0:12:46and realises he's going to play an important part

0:12:46 > 0:12:48in their bid to lose weight.

0:12:48 > 0:12:52'It's about the family and it's about trying to change our lives.'

0:12:52 > 0:12:54I might say you're eating too much at home,

0:12:54 > 0:12:56or you're eating too much of this thing,

0:12:56 > 0:12:59then I'm accused of being the food police.

0:13:02 > 0:13:04'I actually don't think about it. I try not too.

0:13:04 > 0:13:06'I'm in total denial.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09'Wouldn't watch anything on the TV to do with weight loss.'

0:13:09 > 0:13:12If anybody mentions going for a walk to me in work

0:13:12 > 0:13:15I just look the other way, or say I'm busy.

0:13:16 > 0:13:19'I suppose Ellie always carried a wee bit of weight

0:13:19 > 0:13:21'and that has increased,

0:13:21 > 0:13:24'but Ryan never carried any and he's starting to.'

0:13:24 > 0:13:29I've never ate a vegetable in a couple of years.

0:13:29 > 0:13:33The closest vegetable he eats is beans.

0:13:33 > 0:13:34Closest one!

0:13:36 > 0:13:38'Ellie especially loves her sugar hit.

0:13:38 > 0:13:40'She's like me, she loves a sugar hit'

0:13:40 > 0:13:43and she'll be so grumpy when she doesn't get it

0:13:43 > 0:13:46and I don't know how I'm going to handle that.

0:13:46 > 0:13:49Cara will have her work cut out for her,

0:13:49 > 0:13:52but Amanda is on her way to offer professional support.

0:13:52 > 0:13:54Is it kind of anything sweet you go for?

0:13:54 > 0:13:55Biscuits or buns,

0:13:55 > 0:13:59at night we would love getting a cup of tea and wee biccy or a bun.

0:13:59 > 0:14:02Cara talks there about going and getting buns, or whatever.

0:14:02 > 0:14:05We would get a cake, it wouldn't be a bun, there's no point in saying that.

0:14:05 > 0:14:08See, this is why I need him here, Cara.

0:14:08 > 0:14:10It's a cake its not a bun, you know.

0:14:10 > 0:14:12There's a great ice cream shop in Armagh,

0:14:12 > 0:14:15we would go to it at least once a week.

0:14:15 > 0:14:20- At least three times.- Och, not three times! Depends on how busy we are,

0:14:20 > 0:14:23but we love just sitting eating a wee tub of ice cream.

0:14:23 > 0:14:26You mentioned lack of exercise as well.

0:14:26 > 0:14:30Are you basically, driving to work, sedentary at work and driving home?

0:14:30 > 0:14:33I think it was when I got the car, that was the end of the walking.

0:14:33 > 0:14:35You had to walk to get to places before that,

0:14:35 > 0:14:39but then when I got me own car it was the end of it.

0:14:39 > 0:14:41I would drive INTO the shop

0:14:41 > 0:14:44if I could get the car in through the door!

0:14:44 > 0:14:46'I might seem outgoing and bubbly,

0:14:46 > 0:14:50'but I'd say I probably lack a lot of self-confidence.'

0:14:50 > 0:14:55People can be very nasty or hurtful, I mean strangers.

0:14:55 > 0:14:56I suppose I live in a cocoon.

0:14:56 > 0:15:00I'm surrounded by people that I know and love

0:15:00 > 0:15:02and they would never be nasty or mean to me,

0:15:02 > 0:15:05but when you go outside of that and people kind of look at you,

0:15:05 > 0:15:09it's very hurtful and it makes you want to do something about it.

0:15:10 > 0:15:13I don't like myself.

0:15:13 > 0:15:18There's nothing I would call good about myself or my body.

0:15:18 > 0:15:20And I just want to change.

0:15:20 > 0:15:22Yeah.

0:15:27 > 0:15:30They're not the only ones ready for change.

0:15:30 > 0:15:33All three families have made a serious commitment

0:15:33 > 0:15:35to improving their lifestyles.

0:15:35 > 0:15:37In preparation for this week

0:15:37 > 0:15:39the adults have been monitored 24 hours a day.

0:15:39 > 0:15:43Eating habits, sleeping patterns and physical activity

0:15:43 > 0:15:46have all been recorded on computerized arm bands

0:15:46 > 0:15:49and Amanda has kept a close eye on them.

0:15:49 > 0:15:55And now the time has come for the inevitable and dreaded weigh in.

0:15:55 > 0:15:57Knowledge is power. We've got to know where we are.

0:15:57 > 0:16:00And remember it's onwards and upwards from here.

0:16:00 > 0:16:02As a base line for the week

0:16:02 > 0:16:07every one needs to know exactly what their starting point is.

0:16:09 > 0:16:11Have you heard the expression pinch an inch?

0:16:11 > 0:16:12Pinch more than an inch!

0:16:12 > 0:16:14Exactly what we're going to do today.

0:16:14 > 0:16:16Using special callipers,

0:16:16 > 0:16:20John can work out each adult's percentage of body fat.

0:16:20 > 0:16:23He's using a different method for the children.

0:16:23 > 0:16:27He's passing a current through electrodes on the hands and feet.

0:16:27 > 0:16:28And they don't feel a thing.

0:16:28 > 0:16:29Ready to go?

0:16:32 > 0:16:36Before you fall asleep I'll let you put your shoes and socks back on.

0:16:39 > 0:16:41While they wait for the results,

0:16:41 > 0:16:44Rosie and Ellen enjoy a moment of quiet contemplation.

0:16:44 > 0:16:47Spurred on by simply signing up for the show,

0:16:47 > 0:16:51Rosie has already managed to make some changes and has shed 10lbs

0:16:51 > 0:16:54before even arriving on the island.

0:16:54 > 0:16:57Because we live in a seaside resort

0:16:57 > 0:17:00during the summer I work very long hours.

0:17:04 > 0:17:07My day is 9:30 to maybe 8:30 or nine in the evening

0:17:07 > 0:17:10and when I come home in the evening,

0:17:10 > 0:17:15cooking is not always what I want to do, to be perfectly honest.

0:17:15 > 0:17:17And we love our Chinese's.

0:17:17 > 0:17:21And we would make use of those more often than we should.

0:17:24 > 0:17:29Really our opportunities for hard physical exercise are not there,

0:17:29 > 0:17:34so we're not a very active pair.

0:17:38 > 0:17:41Ellen and her friends are typical teenagers.

0:17:41 > 0:17:44Body image is a common topic of conversation

0:17:44 > 0:17:47and Ellen is clear that she'd like to change.

0:17:47 > 0:17:50Id prefer to be more active

0:17:50 > 0:17:52and self-confident

0:17:52 > 0:17:57and be able to do more things that other people can do and I cant.

0:17:57 > 0:17:59I'm not physically capable of.

0:17:59 > 0:18:01We do talk about it a lot, don't we?

0:18:01 > 0:18:06Yeah, I think, when we're having a little coffee after school

0:18:06 > 0:18:08it always comes up in conversation.

0:18:08 > 0:18:10Our body weight, what we look like.

0:18:12 > 0:18:15It's just another part of being a girl, I suppose.

0:18:20 > 0:18:23So what do you think is motivating you then?

0:18:23 > 0:18:26I've always wanted, ever since the past few years,

0:18:26 > 0:18:29I've always wanted to try and lose weight.

0:18:29 > 0:18:32But it's motivation that stops me.

0:18:32 > 0:18:35I suppose I am interested to see

0:18:35 > 0:18:39where my association with food comes from.

0:18:39 > 0:18:41Why I use it the way I do.

0:18:41 > 0:18:44There's a wee bit of fear around that as well, I guess, but...

0:18:44 > 0:18:46It's uncovering the layers.

0:18:46 > 0:18:48We've got to do. There's food,

0:18:48 > 0:18:52and nutrition but it's what drives people to eat certain ways.

0:18:52 > 0:18:56Can you remember the last time you felt really good about you body.

0:18:56 > 0:18:58What were you doing? How old were you? Can you recall?

0:18:58 > 0:19:01Was there a time, a moment frozen in time,

0:19:01 > 0:19:03where you think, "I felt great that day"?

0:19:03 > 0:19:06Or in that dress or at that...

0:19:07 > 0:19:09No, not right now.

0:19:09 > 0:19:11- Nothing comes to mind?- No.

0:19:11 > 0:19:16- So it been a long, long time then? - Yeah, it has.

0:19:25 > 0:19:29The results are in and the families gather to hear the news.

0:19:29 > 0:19:33Thank you for your patience and thank you for all being willing

0:19:33 > 0:19:37to get measured and weighed and prodded and what ever else,

0:19:37 > 0:19:38but now we know where we are.

0:19:38 > 0:19:41Got professor Varman who's a cardiologist.

0:19:41 > 0:19:45He looks after your heart and very important parts of your body.

0:19:47 > 0:19:52Cara, Ellie, come and stand beside your mum.

0:19:54 > 0:19:57Cara has weighed in at 20st 10lbs,

0:19:57 > 0:20:01to reach her ideal weight she would need to loose 11 stone.

0:20:01 > 0:20:04That's not far off the weight of her daughter, Ellie.

0:20:04 > 0:20:08At 10½ stone, nine-year-old Ellie's health and well being

0:20:08 > 0:20:10are seriously compromised.

0:20:10 > 0:20:13So you've got 11st to lose,

0:20:13 > 0:20:18in other words you've got more than your daughter to loose.

0:20:22 > 0:20:24Ryan, at 9st 8lbs,

0:20:24 > 0:20:28is also well above the healthy weight range for his height and age.

0:20:28 > 0:20:3235-year-old Jonny has weighed in at exactly 15 stone.

0:20:32 > 0:20:37You're in the lucky position that you're really here as a supporter for your family.

0:20:37 > 0:20:39You've got the least to lose,

0:20:39 > 0:20:41just two ½ stone. So, a very manageable amount.

0:20:41 > 0:20:44Hold this. That's 5lbs of fat.

0:20:44 > 0:20:47So you've still got to lose at least five of them.

0:20:47 > 0:20:49You hold on to that for a little while.

0:20:49 > 0:20:52OK, thank you.

0:20:52 > 0:20:56- Nick, any idea what your target weight should be?- Honestly, no.

0:20:58 > 0:21:04At 19 stone five, Nick is clinically obese and about five stone over his ideal weight.

0:21:04 > 0:21:07But it's his poor diet that concerns Amanda.

0:21:07 > 0:21:12- I read your food diaries, and see the red apples there? - Mmm-hmm.

0:21:12 > 0:21:16The week of your typical family diet, your intake

0:21:16 > 0:21:19- of fresh fruit and vegetables, have you heard of five a day? - Mmm-hmm.

0:21:19 > 0:21:22- You were having three servings a week.- Oh, dear.

0:21:22 > 0:21:27What you needed to have a week was represented by the green apples.

0:21:29 > 0:21:33Nicks partner Isobel is 15 stone ten.

0:21:33 > 0:21:37She is carrying a lot more weight than she is comfortable with

0:21:37 > 0:21:39and a whopping six stone more than is healthy.

0:21:39 > 0:21:41- You like ice cream, don't you? - Mmm-hmm.

0:21:41 > 0:21:48OK, this little test tube here represents seven grams of saturated fat, half a cup of ice cream.

0:21:48 > 0:21:52It's got that much fat in it.

0:21:52 > 0:21:54With Rachel at seven stone two,

0:21:54 > 0:21:58and Ellen just over 13 stone, they are both in a high risk category

0:21:58 > 0:22:02for carrying their weight problems with them into adult hood.

0:22:02 > 0:22:06Having lost ten pounds in the previous weeks when she was wearing

0:22:06 > 0:22:11her monitor at home, Rosie tips the scales at 15 stone 9lbs.

0:22:11 > 0:22:14Amanda is curious to know what she'd been up too.

0:22:14 > 0:22:16What were you doing in the mornings?

0:22:16 > 0:22:22- I started to walk. Once I had the monitor on I started to walk in the mornings.- It really worked?- Yeah.

0:22:22 > 0:22:24That daily exercise really worked?

0:22:24 > 0:22:26That's what helped you burn that fat so quickly.

0:22:28 > 0:22:31You might be wondering what the potatoes are all about?

0:22:31 > 0:22:35That represents the total weight of what the five adults,

0:22:35 > 0:22:39not the children, have got to lose to get to their target weights.

0:22:39 > 0:22:42You've got to lose 192 kilos.

0:22:44 > 0:22:48All the adults, except you, Jonny,

0:22:48 > 0:22:51have over 50% of their body as body fat.

0:22:51 > 0:22:56Over 50% of you body is currently made up of that.

0:22:57 > 0:23:02You are carrying what I would call blubber in your hand.

0:23:02 > 0:23:07Now, if I could just ask you to look at this model here for a moment.

0:23:07 > 0:23:12The outside of this model, this tube represents a blood vessel,

0:23:12 > 0:23:16a blood vessel that has become furred up.

0:23:16 > 0:23:20And immediately those blood vessels get blocked, you end up with a stroke.

0:23:20 > 0:23:22I think all of you know what a stroke is.

0:23:22 > 0:23:26Heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, stokes

0:23:26 > 0:23:30are all on the increase in our society.

0:23:30 > 0:23:35Professor Varman has been straight talking and its been hard to listen to.

0:23:35 > 0:23:40Amanda is quick to turn the negatives into a positive.

0:23:40 > 0:23:44The most important thing is that we have you here as your family groups.

0:23:44 > 0:23:48Research show that if families work together to lose weight

0:23:48 > 0:23:52they get the results in the longer term more than if you're individuals.

0:23:52 > 0:23:56I know it can be difficult to swallow some of that information

0:23:56 > 0:23:59and remember that every single thing that you put into your mouth

0:23:59 > 0:24:02will translate into what happens in your body.

0:24:04 > 0:24:05Deep breath, everyone.

0:24:05 > 0:24:09Why don't you give each other a hug as your family groups.

0:24:09 > 0:24:10Och, it's not pleasant,

0:24:10 > 0:24:15it's the reality of the situation, its easier to not know it

0:24:15 > 0:24:20but, at the end of the day, we're here to do something about it.

0:24:20 > 0:24:26My dad was 64 or 65 when he died of a stroke and I thought, "that's all?"

0:24:26 > 0:24:28You know, everyone's in the same boat.

0:24:28 > 0:24:33So there's lots of similar thoughts and feelings and comments

0:24:33 > 0:24:35and what we're hoping to get out of it all.

0:24:35 > 0:24:37So if I had this...

0:24:37 > 0:24:43It would take about two weeks, just two weeks of healthy eating

0:24:43 > 0:24:48and a bit of exercise, and that would be gone.

0:24:48 > 0:24:52That's the power you have. That's why your body's amazing

0:24:52 > 0:24:55because you can change it. Just like that.

0:25:04 > 0:25:06As the first day draws to a close,

0:25:06 > 0:25:09appetites are satisfied with another simple healthy meal.

0:25:09 > 0:25:13And while the families tuck in the experts have gathered.

0:25:13 > 0:25:15So lets talk about each family,

0:25:15 > 0:25:18now that we are almost at the end of the first day.

0:25:18 > 0:25:21Shall we go through Nick, Isobel and Rachel first?

0:25:21 > 0:25:26I find them, as a family, really articulate, really in touch

0:25:26 > 0:25:30and I think we've all got to tap into that somehow because they get it.

0:25:30 > 0:25:34It's just the doing, I think. What do you guys think?

0:25:34 > 0:25:37Defiantly be interested, particularly with Nick

0:25:37 > 0:25:40and his description of himself as the jolly fat bloke.

0:25:40 > 0:25:43- Yeah.- There's a sad side behind the joke fat bloke.

0:25:43 > 0:25:45I think what Isobel says is very important.

0:25:45 > 0:25:48She, when she went back to the gym, took too much on.

0:25:48 > 0:25:53I think the main thing is it to try and get it into her lifestyle and what's achievable now.

0:25:53 > 0:25:58- Yeah.- What stood out for me was some of the issues potentially around Rachel.

0:25:58 > 0:26:04The way they set limits around what she eats, or perhaps shy away from doing that.

0:26:04 > 0:26:08I guess the question would be how would that might make them feel

0:26:08 > 0:26:13if they weren't able to give Rachel what she was asking for.

0:26:13 > 0:26:17So Rosie and Ellen, I really find them close,

0:26:17 > 0:26:22they're intertwined, their lives are intertwined.

0:26:22 > 0:26:25At times they seem more like sisters than mother and daughter

0:26:25 > 0:26:30and within a relationship like that then if one party were to change

0:26:30 > 0:26:35or start to change, it would be important that the other does as well.

0:26:35 > 0:26:39Otherwise there might be a risk then that that change

0:26:39 > 0:26:41might be too much for the other person.

0:26:41 > 0:26:43When she stepped off the boat

0:26:43 > 0:26:47I felt she was carrying herself differently.

0:26:47 > 0:26:50I mean she seemed proud of the fact that she has lost weight.

0:26:50 > 0:26:54I saw a spark of, "I'm feeling quite good."

0:26:54 > 0:26:56No I think there's a window with Rosie.

0:26:56 > 0:27:01I think it's just strengthening that improvement

0:27:01 > 0:27:04in how she relates to herself.

0:27:05 > 0:27:09Cara and Jonny and the kids.

0:27:09 > 0:27:12Cara's obviously got the most weight to lose out of everyone

0:27:12 > 0:27:17and she said that it's so much weight to loose

0:27:17 > 0:27:22it's going to take a long time that it's almost "why bother starting"?

0:27:22 > 0:27:25She wanted fast results, that was a big concern for me.

0:27:25 > 0:27:32I think maybe it's just educate to how small losses will help.

0:27:32 > 0:27:36If they have a pretty awful relationship with themselves,

0:27:36 > 0:27:40really all the medical facts in the world wont make a difference,

0:27:40 > 0:27:43cos she's not going to use the medical facts to turn things around.

0:27:43 > 0:27:47Because she doesn't actually feel good enough about herself

0:27:47 > 0:27:48or that she's worth it.

0:27:48 > 0:27:52We have to transition out of this week, giving them the tools

0:27:52 > 0:27:56for the long term because they have a long road ahead. But...

0:27:56 > 0:27:58Hopefully, this week.

0:27:58 > 0:28:02It's got to come from every single angle, hasn't it? In order to work.

0:28:04 > 0:28:06Next time, the group get started

0:28:06 > 0:28:09on making changes for a happier, healthier future.

0:28:09 > 0:28:14A lot of years wasted that could have been so much fuller.

0:28:14 > 0:28:20You don't even let me finish or say why, whatever,

0:28:20 > 0:28:21you just say no.

0:28:21 > 0:28:24Why you not taking your gym kit with you?

0:28:24 > 0:28:28Why you not going to the gym before work? Why not after work?

0:28:28 > 0:28:29And always having an excuse.

0:28:29 > 0:28:32Touche!
