0:00:03 > 0:00:06For a week, the peaceful island of Lusty Beg
0:00:06 > 0:00:08in the Lakelands of Fermanagh
0:00:08 > 0:00:12has become home to three families desperate to change their lives.
0:00:12 > 0:00:16They're part of Northern Ireland's growing obesity crisis
0:00:16 > 0:00:20and these families have decided to do something about it.
0:00:22 > 0:00:24Isobel, Nick and daughter Rachael,
0:00:24 > 0:00:28Ryan, Ellie, Mum Cara and stepdad Johnny,
0:00:28 > 0:00:31and mother and daughter Rosie and Ellen
0:00:31 > 0:00:35have come to the island to take part in a tough regime designed
0:00:35 > 0:00:40and delivered by a team of experts to tackle the families' nutrition,
0:00:40 > 0:00:42fitness and well-being.
0:00:42 > 0:00:45It's a week of new experiences...
0:00:45 > 0:00:47Relax. I want you to take a nice deep breath in.
0:00:47 > 0:00:49..Of hard work...
0:00:49 > 0:00:51Take it up.
0:00:51 > 0:00:54..And the chance to open their hearts.
0:00:54 > 0:00:59You would hear them saying something, you know, and I'd feel like saying,
0:00:59 > 0:01:02"I know I'm fat but I'm not deaf."
0:01:11 > 0:01:15It's midway through the families' week on the island.
0:01:15 > 0:01:20They've already started to make progress towards their goal of a lighter, happier life.
0:01:20 > 0:01:24Add 15 seconds to this one, OK? 15 seconds more to go.
0:01:24 > 0:01:26- You're cruel, John.- I am cruel!
0:01:26 > 0:01:31Fitness expert John is introducing them to physical activity.
0:01:31 > 0:01:34They're learning about good nutrition
0:01:34 > 0:01:37and healthier ways of eating and cooking.
0:01:39 > 0:01:42And intensive mind work with clinical psychologists
0:01:42 > 0:01:46is allowing them to step back and look at their lives.
0:01:52 > 0:01:55With by far the most weight to lose in the group,
0:01:55 > 0:01:58Cara has thrown herself into all the activities.
0:01:58 > 0:02:03People think that fat people are lazy people. People give the impression
0:02:03 > 0:02:08that you're fat because you go home and you never do anything.
0:02:08 > 0:02:12But with only a few days left before going home,
0:02:12 > 0:02:15Amanda is concerned that Cara could fall
0:02:15 > 0:02:17straight back into her old habits
0:02:17 > 0:02:22and has asked to meet her in private for a no holds barred pep talk.
0:02:22 > 0:02:24The reason I brought you up here, Cara,
0:02:24 > 0:02:29and I'm going to be really frank, is that I'm worried about motivation.
0:02:29 > 0:02:33You more than anyone have got a longer journey here.
0:02:34 > 0:02:37There is a very real and present danger of diabetes.
0:02:37 > 0:02:42There's a very real and present danger of premature heart problems,
0:02:42 > 0:02:46the whole manner of things that are scary and horrible to look at.
0:02:49 > 0:02:52Where is your motivation on a kind of one to ten?
0:02:53 > 0:02:57At the minute, I would say it's probably a six or a seven,
0:02:57 > 0:03:01but there's definitely room for improvement.
0:03:01 > 0:03:05But I find, Amanda, that I get more motivated when I get into routine.
0:03:05 > 0:03:10Routine is an essential part of any programme for me.
0:03:10 > 0:03:13I mean the challenge with that is that life's not routine.
0:03:13 > 0:03:16You just yourself into a routine and something happens.
0:03:19 > 0:03:22A busy working mum of two,
0:03:22 > 0:03:2633-year-old Cara has been a yo-yo dieter for years.
0:03:26 > 0:03:29'I have always had weight issues.
0:03:29 > 0:03:32'I suppose when I was a teenager in particular
0:03:32 > 0:03:35'and had the money to start buying sweets,'
0:03:35 > 0:03:39then I had the children, which was a great excuse to ignore what was happening.
0:03:41 > 0:03:45There were so much more important things to focus on.
0:03:45 > 0:03:49Now this is something that I really have to address.
0:03:49 > 0:03:52I know people say, "Just take one wee bit at a time."
0:03:52 > 0:03:56I find that hard. I'm a person that wants it all today
0:03:56 > 0:04:01and it's just trying to just cope with doing it gradually.
0:04:01 > 0:04:05What was your mum's relationship with food?
0:04:05 > 0:04:08Sometimes daughters pick up mum's relationship with food.
0:04:08 > 0:04:11Mummy loves to feed people. Mummy doesn't work.
0:04:11 > 0:04:16- She's a feeder.- She's a big, big feeder, even the dog...
0:04:16 > 0:04:22She loves feeding and my auntie jokes the dog is ready to burst!
0:04:22 > 0:04:25- And is that how she showed love? - Yeah.
0:04:25 > 0:04:32So food became something that was, this is what we do when you love someone.
0:04:32 > 0:04:38Mummy cooks every Sunday and she doesn't just do a dinner and a dessert,
0:04:38 > 0:04:40there's cake and tea after that.
0:04:40 > 0:04:44Cos you talked about it being rude almost to say no,
0:04:44 > 0:04:47- so is that how you've been brought up almost...- Yeah.
0:04:47 > 0:04:52When it's set in front of me I find it very hard to say no, I really do.
0:04:52 > 0:04:54Time's going to tell with Cara.
0:04:54 > 0:04:57I think we're going to know quite soon
0:04:57 > 0:04:59if she follows through with the hard stuff.
0:04:59 > 0:05:04If she has a conversation with her mother,
0:05:04 > 0:05:07if she starts to take more control in the household.
0:05:07 > 0:05:12All the things that will be uncomfortable, difficult, taking her out of her comfort zone,
0:05:12 > 0:05:15that's when we're going to see is this a reality or is this just
0:05:15 > 0:05:17something that's never going to quite hold.
0:05:17 > 0:05:21You've now got a year's worth of work ahead, eight months maybe.
0:05:21 > 0:05:23Next week, I want you to go to your doctor,
0:05:23 > 0:05:26tell your doctor what you're doing, I want you to get your GP on board.
0:05:26 > 0:05:30Think about it, get practical about it, say, we're going to do this,
0:05:30 > 0:05:35because the weight will come off as soon as you start living even within
0:05:35 > 0:05:38the realms of a healthy life, but if you start exercising a bit every day,
0:05:38 > 0:05:43keeping the food real, keeping out of the junk, it'll come off.
0:05:43 > 0:05:45There's no other way for it to happen.
0:05:45 > 0:05:49I'm going to be hard on you today.
0:05:49 > 0:05:52How is that different from any other day?
0:05:53 > 0:05:57The families have all confessed to doing virtually no exercise at all.
0:05:57 > 0:06:01Personal Trainer John Coulter hopes that a dose of early morning
0:06:01 > 0:06:05physical activity will leave them energised and ready to take on
0:06:05 > 0:06:07the other challenges of the day.
0:06:07 > 0:06:10- Have a guess what we're doing. - THEY LAUGH
0:06:10 > 0:06:12We're doing the assault course.
0:06:12 > 0:06:17And not only are we doing the assault course, I thought I'd make it challenging.
0:06:17 > 0:06:21To make it challenging, we've got the kids versus the adults.
0:06:21 > 0:06:28- In your face!- Are we ready? - Yes!- Are we ready?- YES!
0:06:28 > 0:06:30Everybody, are we ready?
0:06:30 > 0:06:34- Yes!- Good! Three, two, one.
0:06:34 > 0:06:36Let's go!
0:06:40 > 0:06:4312-year-old Ryan and 42-year-old Nick
0:06:43 > 0:06:46are probably the most competitive in the group
0:06:46 > 0:06:49and they're not going to let a 30 year age gap,
0:06:49 > 0:06:53excess pounds or lack of fitness get in the way of a good contest.
0:06:58 > 0:07:01Everyone's approaching the task with grit and determination,
0:07:01 > 0:07:04but Amanda wants to know if they've shown the same commitment
0:07:04 > 0:07:07in their kitchens this morning.
0:07:07 > 0:07:11I'm just going to check how much breakfast they had.
0:07:15 > 0:07:17Porridge - that's a good sign.
0:07:17 > 0:07:22So they had porridge this morning, brilliant! (Let's sneak back out.)
0:07:22 > 0:07:24I'm going to sneak into Rosie and Ellen's house.
0:07:24 > 0:07:29No sign of any cooking, but fruit. Hmm.
0:07:29 > 0:07:33I'm thinking they slept in and didn't have any breakfast.
0:07:33 > 0:07:35Nick and Isobel's lodge.
0:07:35 > 0:07:40Ahh. Looks like they might have had a smoothie. That's good news.
0:07:40 > 0:07:43They've made smoothies and they've had some of the fruit.
0:07:43 > 0:07:45Very good.
0:07:45 > 0:07:50Doing well. Keep it up. Keep it up.
0:07:50 > 0:07:54- That's it!- Just a few days ago, none of the families would have
0:07:54 > 0:07:58thought they'd be starting the day with an assault course,
0:07:58 > 0:07:59let alone enjoying it.
0:07:59 > 0:08:02John hoped that by pitting the adults against the children
0:08:02 > 0:08:05it would push all of them beyond their expectations,
0:08:05 > 0:08:07and it's paid off.
0:08:07 > 0:08:10But sometimes there's just no way forward.
0:08:10 > 0:08:15- Push on the next tyre, that's it. - Leave it to me, Mother!- I can't!
0:08:15 > 0:08:18That's all right, it's only one penalty point.
0:08:18 > 0:08:20Don't worry you tried hard.
0:08:20 > 0:08:22Team adults, I've got you!
0:08:22 > 0:08:25Despite Cara's valiant efforts,
0:08:25 > 0:08:29the children have still beaten the parents hands down.
0:08:29 > 0:08:34Look at that! Yes! Great work! Great work! Brilliant!
0:08:34 > 0:08:39High five for the winning team. Good. Great work.
0:08:39 > 0:08:44- Well, how was it? - I was exhausted after it.
0:08:44 > 0:08:48It was horrendous. The hoops were...
0:08:48 > 0:08:52I knew I couldn't do the hoops before I started, so that was a big dread.
0:08:52 > 0:08:55- So you had to default on them, then? - Yeah.
0:08:55 > 0:08:59- But I done the rest. - The kids are gloating that they won.
0:08:59 > 0:09:02They're smaller, they fit through the hoops easier.
0:09:02 > 0:09:06- It's nothing to do with fitness then?- Not at all.
0:09:10 > 0:09:14Clinical psychologist Dr Rachel Andrew
0:09:14 > 0:09:17specialises in working with children and young adults.
0:09:17 > 0:09:21She understands the pressures they'll be under when they go home
0:09:21 > 0:09:26and all the obstacles that may stand in the way of success.
0:09:26 > 0:09:31Well, in the last session when Ryan had been talking about being
0:09:31 > 0:09:34a superhero and that idea, it had made me think about life
0:09:34 > 0:09:36being a battle sometimes.
0:09:36 > 0:09:39It can feel like you're dealing with one thing after another.
0:09:41 > 0:09:46I was thinking about you and the qualities you have that might
0:09:46 > 0:09:49make it more likely that you would win that battle and also about
0:09:49 > 0:09:52the people who would be on your side with it,
0:09:52 > 0:09:56and I guess that for me would be these soldiers.
0:09:59 > 0:10:04So then, what do you think the dinosaurs and the bugs would represent then in that battle?
0:10:04 > 0:10:08- Things trying to stop you. - Yeah, exactly, well done.
0:10:11 > 0:10:15What about for you? Is there anything that you're immediately thinking that
0:10:15 > 0:10:18would get in the way, or that would help me?
0:10:18 > 0:10:21I think people putting you down,
0:10:21 > 0:10:27or bullies or whatever. I think they try to stop you from doing it,
0:10:27 > 0:10:30- sort of making you think that it's wrong.- Right.
0:10:30 > 0:10:34I think you're saying something really important about the things
0:10:34 > 0:10:39that other people can say to you and then that you can internalise a bit.
0:10:39 > 0:10:43- They become things that make you doubt yourself.- Yeah.
0:10:45 > 0:10:49I think people rarely have the opportunity
0:10:49 > 0:10:54to have some space to think about why they do the things that they do,
0:10:54 > 0:10:58and what is helpful and what isn't helpful.
0:10:58 > 0:11:02So therapy, to me, would be about just providing that space.
0:11:04 > 0:11:08I was hoping you might be able to draw out your own battle scenes.
0:11:08 > 0:11:11'I don't think enough people self-reflect.
0:11:11 > 0:11:16'I think we can be so busy and spend so much time just doing
0:11:16 > 0:11:18'that we forget about being,'
0:11:18 > 0:11:23and don't really reflect very much on the choices that we make day-to-day.
0:11:23 > 0:11:27Would you tell me a bit about your picture, Ryan?
0:11:27 > 0:11:34There's a war going on and I'm sort of in the middle of it.
0:11:34 > 0:11:42Two sides are fighting - evil Mr Sugar and he's saying, "Fitness is not important."
0:11:42 > 0:11:47Then this is all the qualities that will help me beat him.
0:11:47 > 0:11:53- Yeah! And you're the Lightning Kid? - Yeah.- I like that, I like it a lot.
0:11:53 > 0:11:56I've really enjoyed today.
0:11:56 > 0:12:01I love seeing the pictures and how you see things in your mind,
0:12:01 > 0:12:04so thanks for that.
0:12:05 > 0:12:08As part of the week's new approach to food and nutrition,
0:12:08 > 0:12:12Amanda wants to give the adults' digestive systems an extra boost
0:12:12 > 0:12:15and she has a special surprise for them.
0:12:15 > 0:12:19Colon hydrotherapy, sometimes called colonic irrigation,
0:12:19 > 0:12:23involves flushing out the bowels with water
0:12:23 > 0:12:25to remove impacted waste and toxins.
0:12:25 > 0:12:28- How are you feeling?- Nervous.- OK.
0:12:28 > 0:12:30If you were to describe your stools...
0:12:30 > 0:12:34- do they have a...- They've got a fun-loving personality!
0:12:34 > 0:12:38- And if you can tell me... - It's something you don't normally look at!
0:12:38 > 0:12:40It's always a good idea to look at your stools.
0:12:40 > 0:12:44It tells you an awful lot about how the digestive system is coping.
0:12:44 > 0:12:46So what would you say...
0:12:46 > 0:12:50I'm going to get you to put on a very nice pair of little knickers.
0:12:50 > 0:12:53With colon hydrotherapy the clue's really in the title -
0:12:53 > 0:12:55the hydrotherapy.
0:12:55 > 0:12:59Its principal aim is to try to hydrate through the gut wall.
0:12:59 > 0:13:02Now the gut, sometimes called the bowel, and even more confusingly
0:13:02 > 0:13:05sometimes called the colon, is all the same part of the body,
0:13:05 > 0:13:10It's the waste pipe at the end of the digestive system that resides in the lower gut area.
0:13:10 > 0:13:12When you said they were quite small,
0:13:12 > 0:13:15you didn't say, "I'm giving you a paper posing pouch."
0:13:15 > 0:13:18You found out which way round they go on?
0:13:18 > 0:13:20- Oh, they're still in there! - They're still in there?
0:13:20 > 0:13:24It's a treatments that people feel really worried about.
0:13:24 > 0:13:26So first things first, I'm just going to lift here.
0:13:26 > 0:13:30What we now understand is that you can collect waste in that part
0:13:30 > 0:13:33of the body and it can auto-intoxicate
0:13:33 > 0:13:37through the bowel wall into the blood stream causing a whole manner of problems.
0:13:37 > 0:13:39- Are you ready for me to insert? - Yeah.
0:13:39 > 0:13:42Yeah, so we're going to work with your breathing. OK.
0:13:42 > 0:13:46So just relax. I want you to take a nice deep breath in.
0:13:46 > 0:13:49- Oooh. Ahhh? Owww!- And breathe out.
0:13:49 > 0:13:53A lot of people have a very sluggish digestive system,
0:13:53 > 0:13:57so it's a chance to clear out excess waste,
0:13:57 > 0:14:00to help actually stimulate peristalsis,
0:14:00 > 0:14:05improve the bowel tone, if you like, and get that hydrotherapy...
0:14:05 > 0:14:06really improving.
0:14:06 > 0:14:10OK. What we were hoping to see as the treatment progresses
0:14:10 > 0:14:13is that we can see quite often through the tube,
0:14:13 > 0:14:18is that the tube starts to move as the colon starts to work.
0:14:18 > 0:14:21So at the moment, there isn't an awful lot of indication that
0:14:21 > 0:14:26there's much tone or strength in your colon and again that's where
0:14:26 > 0:14:31your fibre in your diet is going to really help your colon to get stronger.
0:14:31 > 0:14:34It's kind of like the workout for the colon.
0:14:34 > 0:14:36All right, Johnny.
0:14:36 > 0:14:40- Getting quite a lot of gas there. Can you hear it?- Yeah.
0:14:41 > 0:14:43Good.
0:14:43 > 0:14:46A few little bits of stools coming through.
0:14:46 > 0:14:50So really starting to stimulate the colon to work.
0:14:51 > 0:14:53- OK?- Mm-hm.
0:14:53 > 0:14:56It's just so weird!
0:14:56 > 0:15:00Surreal experiences!
0:15:03 > 0:15:06Keep coming, duck. Keep coming, the kitchen's that way.
0:15:08 > 0:15:10Crispy duck! Yummy!
0:15:11 > 0:15:15No, I hope Amanda doesn't hear me after our big motivational talk.
0:15:15 > 0:15:16That was only a joke.
0:15:16 > 0:15:21With meat on their minds, the lunchtime Greek salad gets a poor reception.
0:15:21 > 0:15:25You haven't even tasted it, guys.
0:15:26 > 0:15:29Anything that's green is good for you.
0:15:29 > 0:15:31And you like tomatoes, don't you?
0:15:31 > 0:15:33- No.- Do you not like tomatoes?- No.
0:15:33 > 0:15:37Nutritionally, the meal isn't lacking but the absence of meat
0:15:37 > 0:15:41clearly feels like deprivation to some of the group.
0:15:41 > 0:15:43Disappointing, in a word.
0:15:43 > 0:15:47After invasive therapies, et cetera, et cetera,
0:15:47 > 0:15:51I was expecting something a little more substantial than a bowl of leaves,
0:15:51 > 0:15:55which was ultimately what we were handed at lunchtime today.
0:15:55 > 0:15:58We've got some tomato and cucumber there.
0:15:58 > 0:16:02I was disappointed more for the children than the adults.
0:16:02 > 0:16:04- Do you want an omelette?- I'm OK.
0:16:04 > 0:16:09There were four very long faces this afternoon when lunch was revealed
0:16:09 > 0:16:11and it was lunch for everyone.
0:16:11 > 0:16:13Is there none for the rest of them?
0:16:13 > 0:16:17I see no reason why it couldn't have been salad with a slice of ham,
0:16:17 > 0:16:22salad with a piece of fish, rather than salad.
0:16:22 > 0:16:25How's your side salad?
0:16:28 > 0:16:32As part of their journey to a healthier future,
0:16:32 > 0:16:37it's important that the children become much more aware of and in tune with their bodies.
0:16:37 > 0:16:41Amanda has arranged a yoga session for them.
0:16:41 > 0:16:43Stay really focused on that point, good.
0:16:43 > 0:16:49Now try reaching the arms all the way to the sky. Good, really lovely.
0:16:49 > 0:16:54Come all the way down. Good. Breathe in, reach all the way up.
0:16:54 > 0:16:58Good. Exhale, hands back to your heart. Good.
0:16:58 > 0:17:00The practice of yoga...
0:17:00 > 0:17:04it really allows kids to feel grounded.
0:17:04 > 0:17:07Breathe in, dip your back, lift your head, your tail.
0:17:07 > 0:17:09'It gets them connected to their body'
0:17:09 > 0:17:12and to their emotions.
0:17:12 > 0:17:14Sweep the back arm around. Pull it all the way back,
0:17:14 > 0:17:18open your chest and shoot it to the sky.
0:17:18 > 0:17:20It helps with their concentration,
0:17:20 > 0:17:25their focus, their balance and also with mental and physical flexibility.
0:17:26 > 0:17:30Can you feel the person in front of you, the person that you've got your hands on?
0:17:30 > 0:17:34Can you feel them breathing? Can everyone take a deep breath?
0:17:34 > 0:17:38Breathe in...and breathe out.
0:17:38 > 0:17:42'They cultivate this beautiful inner peace that
0:17:42 > 0:17:45'they can connect to at any time and I think'
0:17:45 > 0:17:48all of that allows them or helps them
0:17:48 > 0:17:53to make really healthy, good lifestyle choices,
0:17:54 > 0:17:56Feel your body.
0:17:56 > 0:18:00It creates this unbelievable self-awareness
0:18:00 > 0:18:05and it makes you conscious of all the choices that you make.
0:18:11 > 0:18:16Raman's therapy sessions are also about developing self-awareness
0:18:16 > 0:18:18and being in control of life choices.
0:18:18 > 0:18:24So far, Cara hasn't found Raman's style of psychotherapy particularly helpful.
0:18:31 > 0:18:32Not easy to start?
0:18:32 > 0:18:37I'm totally distracted now, Raman. I'm in a bit of pain.
0:18:38 > 0:18:40I hurt my foot.
0:18:40 > 0:18:46Just stood up and walked and I've hurt it
0:18:46 > 0:18:49and I'm really frustrated.
0:18:49 > 0:18:51I think I'm more conscious anyway today.
0:18:51 > 0:18:54We'd done the assault course this morning and...
0:18:54 > 0:18:59they all could finish it and the last one was jumping through the hoops
0:18:59 > 0:19:03and there was more of me, to tell you the truth,
0:19:03 > 0:19:09than there was of the hoop. And I tried to do it but I just couldn't possibly do it,
0:19:09 > 0:19:12So that...I didn't think about it at the time,
0:19:12 > 0:19:14but I'm thinking about it now.
0:19:17 > 0:19:21Perhaps that moment this morning felt a bit humiliating?
0:19:21 > 0:19:23Yeah, very much so, yeah.
0:19:37 > 0:19:40I think one of the most difficult things for you
0:19:40 > 0:19:47is not only having to keep in your mind that this is a long haul,
0:19:47 > 0:19:52but also having a relationship with yourself where
0:19:52 > 0:19:56- you're not humiliating or belittling yourself when things go wrong.- Yeah.
0:20:03 > 0:20:08When it comes to weight, it's a very private subject to me.
0:20:08 > 0:20:12It's not something that I... or when people I feel humiliate me,
0:20:12 > 0:20:18I kind of do like to keep it to myself or I would get upset, you know?
0:20:18 > 0:20:22But the other way is maybe it goes more inside of you
0:20:22 > 0:20:25and that can contribute to you
0:20:25 > 0:20:27comfort eating to deal with that discomfort.
0:20:29 > 0:20:35I suppose it was like the time I was going to look at wedding dresses,
0:20:35 > 0:20:39and I went into one particular shop and as soon as I walked in,
0:20:39 > 0:20:43I could see the reaction on the woman's face as if to say,
0:20:43 > 0:20:47"God, no. You're going to be a problem," before I'd even said hello.
0:20:47 > 0:20:52And some people even, you would hear them saying something, you know,
0:20:52 > 0:20:58and I feel like saying, "You know, I know I'm fat but I'm not deaf."
0:21:00 > 0:21:03One of the most difficult things for you to do,
0:21:03 > 0:21:06if you put the weight problem to the side,
0:21:06 > 0:21:11is in your mind to deal with all of these things.
0:21:11 > 0:21:17You know, the reaction of other people to you as you are
0:21:17 > 0:21:22and then trying to manage the humiliating responses,
0:21:22 > 0:21:26the negative responses,
0:21:26 > 0:21:31because your natural personality is to kind of let that bounce off you,
0:21:31 > 0:21:35but privately it has a massive effect on you.
0:21:38 > 0:21:41Cara has uncovered feelings that were deeply buried.
0:21:41 > 0:21:47The next step is to work on breaking the vicious cycle of negative thoughts and comfort eating.
0:21:50 > 0:21:53The body is a product of what we put into it
0:21:53 > 0:21:56and the eye can reflect the way we eat.
0:21:56 > 0:21:59The practise of iridology, based on scientific study,
0:21:59 > 0:22:03uses analysis of the iris to flag up potential health issues.
0:22:03 > 0:22:06The tone of the bowel is really out of balance.
0:22:06 > 0:22:10There's a lot of diverticular pockets and these little openings,
0:22:10 > 0:22:13and there's a constriction there, so that's in the ileum.
0:22:13 > 0:22:17Can you miss? Do you have a tendency to miss when you go to the toilet?
0:22:17 > 0:22:22- No.- You go every day, no problem? - Oh, yeah!- More than once?- Oh, yeah!
0:22:22 > 0:22:24All right. He's proud of that.
0:22:24 > 0:22:27Iridology is just fascinating.
0:22:27 > 0:22:33When you realise that someone can look into your eye and tell you all the strengths and weaknesses
0:22:33 > 0:22:38about how your body works and maybe what you've inherited, your genetic predisposition,
0:22:38 > 0:22:42it really is a very insightful analysis of how well your body's operating.
0:22:42 > 0:22:46That's the uterus area there. See that big opening there?
0:22:46 > 0:22:51- With your menstruation, did you have problems?- In the past, yes.
0:22:53 > 0:22:57Iridology originated in Germany, but is used extensively
0:22:57 > 0:23:01in countries like Australia where it's quite normal, everyone knows what it is.
0:23:01 > 0:23:03We've got a lot of dark in the middle of the eye,
0:23:03 > 0:23:07so there's under-activity in the digestive tract.
0:23:07 > 0:23:08It's not a diagnostic tool.
0:23:08 > 0:23:14Our iridologist isn't telling them they have a disease or a certain condition.
0:23:14 > 0:23:19It's more a feeling of how well their body systems are operating.
0:23:19 > 0:23:23It's a little bit wobbly here, so you can be a little bit anxious
0:23:23 > 0:23:26and stress easy. Can you get really affected by stress?
0:23:26 > 0:23:30Out of ten being really bad, where would you put your stress?
0:23:30 > 0:23:34- Probably between seven and eight on average.- So it is really high.
0:23:34 > 0:23:36I got a bit of a surprise.
0:23:36 > 0:23:41I had set it in a box marked new age mumbo-jumbo,
0:23:41 > 0:23:45but then expecting nothing but that,
0:23:45 > 0:23:50was told that I had had respiratory problems,
0:23:50 > 0:23:55that it was my left-hand side and I was told it was the lower lobe of my left lung,
0:23:55 > 0:23:58and she was right on all counts.
0:23:58 > 0:24:00I was very surprised at that.
0:24:00 > 0:24:05So maybe I'll take it out of the box marked new age mumbo-jumbo
0:24:05 > 0:24:09and pay a bit more attention to it.
0:24:10 > 0:24:13For these families caught in the takeaway trap,
0:24:13 > 0:24:17Amanda needs to give them practical healthy alternatives.
0:24:17 > 0:24:20It's Rosie and Ellen's turn to learn some new cooking skills
0:24:20 > 0:24:22as they make dinner for the others.
0:24:22 > 0:24:25Right, your turn for Thinner Dinner.
0:24:25 > 0:24:29What I thought we'd do is a take on fried chicken.
0:24:29 > 0:24:34What we're going to do is chicken drumsticks, so it's still quite familiar but done in the oven
0:24:34 > 0:24:38with a tiny bit of salt, a bit of pepper and a little bit of soy sauce, nothing else.
0:24:38 > 0:24:41Pre-scooped out some potatoes, which we're going to fill
0:24:41 > 0:24:44so it's a bit more interesting than a baked potato.
0:24:44 > 0:24:47Do you want to start scooping them into the potatoes?
0:24:47 > 0:24:49Do you tend to have roasted vegetables?
0:24:49 > 0:24:55I like roasted vegetables. The children wouldn't really go for it, but let's see.
0:24:55 > 0:25:00The carrots and parsnips need nothing more than a light drizzle of oil and a little seasoning.
0:25:00 > 0:25:04- It's a press a button. - The baked potatoes, refilled with a sweet corn,
0:25:04 > 0:25:08red pepper and potato mixture, are a filling alternative to chips.
0:25:08 > 0:25:11They can be finished with a sprinkling of Parmesan.
0:25:11 > 0:25:14Not too much cheese when people are trying to lose weight,
0:25:14 > 0:25:18but Parmesan is really strong so you need very little of it.
0:25:18 > 0:25:22A little oil, light seasoning and soy sauce is a quick and easy way
0:25:22 > 0:25:24to make drumsticks delicious.
0:25:24 > 0:25:29So we have half an hour while that's all in the oven. Is the table ready?
0:25:29 > 0:25:35For busy families, cooking together is a great chance to spend time in each other's company.
0:25:35 > 0:25:40Even young children can get involved in mealtimes by helping to lay the table.
0:25:40 > 0:25:45And research shows that families who eat home-cooked meals together are happier and healthier.
0:25:45 > 0:25:51- Hello.- Girls, you've really excelled yourselves.
0:25:51 > 0:25:55- Chicken in a basket.- It's chicken! - LAUGHTER
0:25:57 > 0:26:00It's real chicken not surprise chicken.
0:26:00 > 0:26:03There you go.
0:26:03 > 0:26:05Now, I know you really, really want this,
0:26:05 > 0:26:08but I thought I might do you a salad?
0:26:08 > 0:26:09LAUGHTER
0:26:09 > 0:26:11Speechless!
0:26:14 > 0:26:16It's not only Nick that's happy.
0:26:16 > 0:26:19Everyone's enjoying Rosie and Ellen's inexpensive,
0:26:19 > 0:26:24simple to prepare and super healthy chicken in a basket.
0:26:30 > 0:26:31As a treat after dinner,
0:26:31 > 0:26:36it's movie night, but there's more than just a movie on offer -
0:26:36 > 0:26:39a tempting array of crisps, sweets and chocolate,
0:26:39 > 0:26:42as well as healthy snacks, has been laid out.
0:26:42 > 0:26:45It's the first real test of the week.
0:26:47 > 0:26:50Look, Minstrels.
0:26:50 > 0:26:52There's marshmallows.
0:26:57 > 0:27:01Oh, it's a trick. They wouldn't be this...kind.
0:27:06 > 0:27:09- Take one square and leave it?- No!
0:27:11 > 0:27:14The group has done really well over the last few days,
0:27:14 > 0:27:19as they've left their high sugar, high fat habits behind them.
0:27:19 > 0:27:21Can they resist temptation and do the right thing?
0:27:21 > 0:27:23Just think about this.
0:27:23 > 0:27:26It's your decision, I'm not going to make it for you,
0:27:26 > 0:27:29but I'm just telling you we've had a hard week,
0:27:29 > 0:27:33if you want to go back to that way of life, it's up to you. No pressure.
0:27:36 > 0:27:40Cara's resolve, like everyone else's, is standing firm.
0:27:40 > 0:27:42Amanda should be proud.
0:27:42 > 0:27:44Anybody else for water?
0:27:44 > 0:27:46What did you just do?
0:27:46 > 0:27:48Remove temptation.
0:27:51 > 0:27:54In the end, we all got through the movie,
0:27:54 > 0:27:59munching on our carrot sticks, our celery and our fruit,
0:27:59 > 0:28:02and I think we all feel better for it.
0:28:03 > 0:28:05Next time...
0:28:07 > 0:28:10I'm really angry that you've decided to kick me where it really hurts.
0:28:10 > 0:28:14Why would kick me? Do you not think I'm good to you?
0:28:16 > 0:28:19It's the loss of this, the loss of five of us and the kids.
0:28:19 > 0:28:22That bond seems to be very strong.
0:28:23 > 0:28:27Sometimes I'll get very shallow and say, "No, I do care.
0:28:27 > 0:28:30"I want to be the way I used to be." There's no harm in it,
0:28:30 > 0:28:33but it would be nice to have somebody to flirt with you.
