0:00:02 > 0:00:06I'm 15.5 stone, 5 foot 11 and I probably eat too much,

0:00:06 > 0:00:08drink too much and don't do enough exercise.

0:00:08 > 0:00:10If I was a member of the Welsh rugby team,

0:00:10 > 0:00:1415.5 stone would probably be OK.

0:00:14 > 0:00:18But I'm not. Like half the Welsh population, I'm overweight.

0:00:31 > 0:00:32Hello, good evening.

0:00:32 > 0:00:35PE should be given the same status as maths

0:00:35 > 0:00:38and English to tackle our obesity time bomb, that's the conclusion...

0:00:38 > 0:00:41'I'm Jamie Owen and I present Wales Today.

0:00:41 > 0:00:45'20 years of working newsroom shifts, taking little exercise

0:00:45 > 0:00:49'and eating fast food has taken its toll.'

0:00:49 > 0:00:51Hello, good afternoon. A row has broken out...

0:00:51 > 0:00:54'And looking back at old footage is sobering.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57'My hairline has receded, my neck has grown wider

0:00:57 > 0:00:59'and my waistline has expanded.'

0:00:59 > 0:01:02It's quality, not quantity, that counts...

0:01:02 > 0:01:05I'm a real foodie, I love food. I particularly like rubbish.

0:01:05 > 0:01:11I like Chinese food, Indian food, I like pasta...

0:01:11 > 0:01:14Chips and steak-and-kidney pie, please.

0:01:14 > 0:01:17'If it's been a long day, I need cheering up.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20'I'll treat myself with a pork pie.'

0:01:20 > 0:01:23All the things that are essentially bad for you, I like.

0:01:25 > 0:01:26Have I mentioned crisps?

0:01:26 > 0:01:28Thanks very much, see you later.

0:01:28 > 0:01:30'So, I've set myself a challenge.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33'From today, I'm on a ten-week mission to turn my life around,

0:01:33 > 0:01:35'to lose weight and get fit.

0:01:36 > 0:01:40'Exercising three times a week, reducing my alcohol intake

0:01:40 > 0:01:43'and eating a healthy diet of fruit and vegetables,

0:01:43 > 0:01:47'fish and white meat will, I hope, make me fitter and thinner.'

0:01:47 > 0:01:52If I can lose a stone over the next couple of months,

0:01:52 > 0:01:55I will feel an enormous sense of achievement.

0:01:55 > 0:01:58No-one lives for ever.

0:01:58 > 0:02:02But you can drastically improve your chances of a longer life

0:02:02 > 0:02:06and a healthier life, if you do something about it.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12- You're not having these as well, are you?- Yeah, yeah.

0:02:12 > 0:02:14'And my other half, Suzanne,

0:02:14 > 0:02:17'will do everything in her power to ensure that I succeed.'

0:02:17 > 0:02:21So, this is the magic naughty cupboard.

0:02:21 > 0:02:25And if you know what I mean, you can go in further back, so...

0:02:25 > 0:02:27Get in at the back.

0:02:28 > 0:02:31Chocolates! They are out of date.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34So, hopefully, Jamie won't find these.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36Coming back after a late shift, there is

0:02:36 > 0:02:39the temptation just to have a look and see what might be there.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42But supplies are a bit limited at the moment, sadly.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44If he can do this, then he can be, hopefully,

0:02:44 > 0:02:47an inspiration for other people to think,

0:02:47 > 0:02:51"Actually, I need to make some big choices about my life, too."

0:02:51 > 0:02:54So, that will keep him going, I think, that driver.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00Hello. How are you? Nice to see you.

0:03:00 > 0:03:04'I'm going to be making some radical changes, so before

0:03:04 > 0:03:08'I get started, I'm seeing my GP, Dr Marina Arulanandam,

0:03:08 > 0:03:11'for a full body MOT.

0:03:11 > 0:03:15'Body mass index, or BMI, is a measure that anyone can use

0:03:15 > 0:03:17'to check if your weight is healthy for your height.

0:03:17 > 0:03:21'I'm 5 foot 11 and weigh 15.5 stone.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24'That's 98 kilos, if you're younger than me!'

0:03:24 > 0:03:31- Your BMI is 30.- Right.- Ideally, it should be between 21 and 25.- Right.

0:03:31 > 0:03:33So, you are overweight.

0:03:33 > 0:03:37You are 45, you have a stressful job, so you are the typical

0:03:37 > 0:03:42candidate who is more prone to having a heart attack, having a stroke, OK?

0:03:42 > 0:03:44And we want to prevent you from having that.

0:03:44 > 0:03:47Because it's cheaper for the NHS to prevent it than to treat you.

0:03:47 > 0:03:50- It's a cheery thought, isn't it? - Absolutely.

0:03:52 > 0:03:54Well...!

0:03:54 > 0:03:55Thanks, bye now.

0:03:55 > 0:04:01I would like Jamie to lose a couple of stone, which would be realistic.

0:04:01 > 0:04:07And I think he can do it if he had the time and if he had...

0:04:07 > 0:04:09I mean, he is very, very motivated.

0:04:09 > 0:04:12But I think, with Jamie, it's the lifestyle factor

0:04:12 > 0:04:13and it's a time issue.

0:04:13 > 0:04:17'So, as well as heart disease, stroke and diabetes,

0:04:17 > 0:04:21'the latest research shows that obesity can increase the risk

0:04:21 > 0:04:25'of developing dementia, another good reason to change my life.'

0:04:25 > 0:04:28It is quite sobering to be sat there,

0:04:28 > 0:04:31being told all those things face-to-face.

0:04:31 > 0:04:38And I guess now, there is no escape, there is ten weeks to put it right.

0:04:38 > 0:04:42DOOR BELL RINGS, KNOCK AT DOOR

0:04:42 > 0:04:45'To help me kick-start my new regime, I've called in the services

0:04:45 > 0:04:47'of a personal trainer,

0:04:47 > 0:04:50'who I fear is about to turn my life upside down.'

0:04:50 > 0:04:54- Hello.- Good morning!- Nice to see you.- Nice to see you.- Come in.

0:04:54 > 0:04:58'Health guru Catrin is here to assess my fitness, and she has got

0:04:58 > 0:05:01'more than just a skipping rope in that kit bag of hers.'

0:05:02 > 0:05:04Like something out of medieval Britain!

0:05:04 > 0:05:07Is there an anaesthetic before I have to do this?

0:05:07 > 0:05:09SHE LAUGHS

0:05:09 > 0:05:12'As the scales don't differentiate between body fat and muscle,

0:05:12 > 0:05:16'Catrin is using the callipers to measure the amount of fat

0:05:16 > 0:05:19'I'm carrying in different parts of my body.'

0:05:19 > 0:05:21You know when you said I'd really enjoy this?

0:05:21 > 0:05:24- Which bit of it did you mean? - The results at the end.

0:05:24 > 0:05:28- Yes, that's what I'm looking forward to.- OK, that's 15.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31If you're going to lose some fat, we're going to look at...

0:05:31 > 0:05:33You need to lose inches.

0:05:33 > 0:05:35'By the end of my challenge,

0:05:35 > 0:05:37'I hope there will be much less fat to pinch.'

0:05:37 > 0:05:41Over the next ten weeks, I want Jamie to lose some fat.

0:05:41 > 0:05:44In order to do that, I want him to come

0:05:44 > 0:05:47and see me in the gym, three times a week.

0:05:47 > 0:05:51I want him to clean up his diet act and start eating healthier.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54He needs to eat clean and train dirty!

0:05:55 > 0:06:00The very idea of squats, weights and treadmills fills me with horror.

0:06:00 > 0:06:02Down.

0:06:02 > 0:06:04Push.

0:06:04 > 0:06:07Breathing in and out.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10He will get to like the burn.

0:06:10 > 0:06:14He will be craving for it. Mark my words!

0:06:14 > 0:06:19And lift. Pull. Good. Down. Pull.

0:06:19 > 0:06:24She is small and terrifying. And she is very, very disciplined.

0:06:24 > 0:06:26She is everything I'm not.

0:06:26 > 0:06:30Aah! Ohh! Ohh!

0:06:30 > 0:06:33Oh, it's like watching the wrestling,

0:06:33 > 0:06:35Giant Haystacks beating the canvas.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37Hoping the pain will stop!

0:06:37 > 0:06:42Ohh! Ohh! Ohh!

0:06:42 > 0:06:43I am the boss!

0:06:43 > 0:06:45HE GROANS

0:06:48 > 0:06:50- Stiff?- Yeah.

0:06:52 > 0:06:54It hasn't clicked yet, I mean,

0:06:54 > 0:06:57I need to find a way of enjoying this and looking forward to it.

0:06:59 > 0:07:00I would get up, but I can't.

0:07:02 > 0:07:08He powered through it, so he's got that sort of willpower,

0:07:08 > 0:07:12and he's obviously got his good endurance to push through.

0:07:12 > 0:07:16But, um, yeah, lots of work to do.

0:07:16 > 0:07:20He hasn't made that link between his brain and his body yet.

0:07:20 > 0:07:22I think there's a few links missing!

0:07:22 > 0:07:26I quite like my old life, you know, I quite like my food,

0:07:26 > 0:07:28my way of life.

0:07:28 > 0:07:32I know it's probably not good for me in the long term, but I'm trying

0:07:32 > 0:07:38to turn to something else that I'm struggling with, and it's hard.

0:07:41 > 0:07:43A pear.

0:07:43 > 0:07:45Just in case you thought I might have

0:07:45 > 0:07:48slipped from the straight and narrow.

0:07:48 > 0:07:50'Within a week, I've reduced alcohol,

0:07:50 > 0:07:53'I've replaced my nightly carbohydrate fix with

0:07:53 > 0:07:57'a healthy alternative, and I'm also trying to build some daily

0:07:57 > 0:07:59'exercise around my irregular working hours.'

0:08:01 > 0:08:05This is my new weapon in the fight against the fat.

0:08:10 > 0:08:15I've not had any takeaways, I've not been out to any restaurants,

0:08:15 > 0:08:21I'm aching all over, I feel physically tired.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24It's a tough regime, and at the end of week one, you just think,

0:08:24 > 0:08:29"Well, am I going to stick at this for two months?"

0:08:31 > 0:08:35'Going home for a family gathering in Pembrokeshire reminds me

0:08:35 > 0:08:39'that junk food hasn't always been part of my life.'

0:08:39 > 0:08:41We grew up in a very healthy household.

0:08:41 > 0:08:45My mum was a great cook and made sure that we had

0:08:45 > 0:08:49lots of home-cooked, healthy meals provided for us every day.

0:08:49 > 0:08:51She was a health visitor and a nurse.

0:08:51 > 0:08:53We had a very active, outdoor life.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02- THEY SHOUT - 'Today is particularly special.

0:09:02 > 0:09:05'Our family has organised a surprise lunch party to

0:09:05 > 0:09:07'celebrate my mum's big birthday.'

0:09:07 > 0:09:10- Happy birthday.- Thank you, darling.

0:09:10 > 0:09:12Looking very good for 85!

0:09:12 > 0:09:14- Lovely to see all of you. - CORK POPS

0:09:14 > 0:09:17'This is the first time I've seen my younger brothers,

0:09:17 > 0:09:19'Huw and Richard, together for 12 months.'

0:09:19 > 0:09:22I'd like to think I was physically closer to Richard,

0:09:22 > 0:09:24but I am probably physically closer to Huw.

0:09:24 > 0:09:26We are closer in age, anyway.

0:09:26 > 0:09:29Well, the slimmest and fittest, I would say, is Richard,

0:09:29 > 0:09:33the youngest boy, because he does the half marathon

0:09:33 > 0:09:35every year for charity,

0:09:35 > 0:09:39and he is very keen on not eating junk.

0:09:39 > 0:09:44Richard is more into this sort of, you know, marathon running, athlete.

0:09:44 > 0:09:47He'll tell you he was the good-looking one of the family.

0:09:47 > 0:09:50Obviously, he is slightly misguided in that!

0:09:50 > 0:09:53Huw and Jamie would be first to admit that they are a bit lazy,

0:09:53 > 0:09:56with regard to keeping fit and keeping a routine.

0:09:56 > 0:09:57That's why they've piled on the pounds.

0:09:57 > 0:10:01I'm quite happy every night to go out for a six-mile run,

0:10:01 > 0:10:02and those two don't.

0:10:02 > 0:10:07Dad does, like, loads of half marathons, and then, Jamie...

0:10:07 > 0:10:11just doesn't hardly even... He hardly runs about.

0:10:13 > 0:10:16Huw works away from home, he's driving a lot, takeaway food,

0:10:16 > 0:10:19so of course his weight has gone up tremendously,

0:10:19 > 0:10:22and then he's got diabetes as well, which is a problem.

0:10:23 > 0:10:26Jamie has dabbled in fitness once or twice before.

0:10:26 > 0:10:30I've seen several pushbikes in his hallway, wherever he's lived.

0:10:30 > 0:10:33But they are not there for long, you know, I think they get

0:10:33 > 0:10:37put into raffle prizes for the local church bazaar, or what have you.

0:10:37 > 0:10:38HE CHUCKLES

0:10:38 > 0:10:40'To the shock of my family,

0:10:40 > 0:10:43'I've organised a truly healthy birthday lunch.'

0:10:43 > 0:10:50Tomatoes, potato salad, fruit and lots of salads.

0:10:50 > 0:10:54This is the kind of, you know, food of my new life. No puddings.

0:10:54 > 0:10:56It's killing me!

0:10:57 > 0:10:59The important thing, of course, J,

0:10:59 > 0:11:02is that you stick to it now for the rest of you life.

0:11:02 > 0:11:06Healthy eating and all that, you know! No rich cream gravy.

0:11:06 > 0:11:09No delicious desserts.

0:11:09 > 0:11:12- You don't think I'll stick the course?- Absolutely!

0:11:12 > 0:11:15I bet you £20 that this time next year,

0:11:15 > 0:11:20you'll be encouraged to eat things that you like eating.

0:11:20 > 0:11:22- Really?- Yes.

0:11:26 > 0:11:30'Half of all adults in the UK starting diets fail to make it

0:11:30 > 0:11:32'to the end of the month.

0:11:32 > 0:11:35'I'm hoping that I won't be joining their ranks.

0:11:35 > 0:11:39'At my GP's request, I'm here to have an MRI scan,

0:11:39 > 0:11:42'to find out what hidden damage all those years

0:11:42 > 0:11:46'of little exercise and overeating has done.

0:11:46 > 0:11:49'Using state-of-the-art projection, the MRI pictures have been

0:11:49 > 0:11:53'transformed into a living, breathing autopsy.'

0:11:53 > 0:11:57Wow, look at that! That's the inside of me.

0:11:57 > 0:12:00- That looks amazing, doesn't it?- Yeah.

0:12:00 > 0:12:02What we want to do is surprise Jamie and say,

0:12:02 > 0:12:04this is what your insides look like right now, mate.

0:12:06 > 0:12:09What we're looking at here now is a 3D image of your liver, Jamie.

0:12:09 > 0:12:11What you can see here is a little bit of fat there,

0:12:11 > 0:12:14but your liver looks essentially healthy.

0:12:14 > 0:12:15If you don't do anything about your diet,

0:12:15 > 0:12:18if you don't do anything about your alcohol consumption,

0:12:18 > 0:12:20this is what is going to happen in the future.

0:12:20 > 0:12:24Now, that is the only bit of normal liver that we can see there.

0:12:24 > 0:12:27The rest of it is mottled, it's covered in fat,

0:12:27 > 0:12:30this is where people have jaundice, they have liver failure,

0:12:30 > 0:12:33- they may even need to have a liver transplant.- Wow!

0:12:33 > 0:12:38Now, what we're going to try and do is have a look at your heart. OK?

0:12:38 > 0:12:40Oh, bizarre! Look at that.

0:12:40 > 0:12:43Now, what we are seeing here,

0:12:43 > 0:12:46a little bit of fatty deposit in a few places there, OK?

0:12:46 > 0:12:48Which isn't healthy.

0:12:48 > 0:12:52And that probably is dietary. It's very, very minor,

0:12:52 > 0:12:56so it's not causing you any effects at the moment.

0:12:56 > 0:12:58But if you carry on with the bad diet,

0:12:58 > 0:13:00you will find that that's going to get worse.

0:13:00 > 0:13:04It's so unnerving to see small deposits of fat around your heart.

0:13:04 > 0:13:07But it's a good thing that we're looking at this now,

0:13:07 > 0:13:09because you can do something about it.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12What we can do is show you what this heart is going to do

0:13:12 > 0:13:16if you don't look after it. Can you see how awful it is?

0:13:16 > 0:13:19You get all these horrible, yellow deposits of fat.

0:13:19 > 0:13:21The arteries are narrowed,

0:13:21 > 0:13:24if you look at the big artery that takes the blood supply

0:13:24 > 0:13:27everywhere, it's got all yellowed, it's fatty,

0:13:27 > 0:13:31so what we are seeing here is a fairly diseased heart.

0:13:31 > 0:13:34It's been the most extraordinary and unique experience,

0:13:34 > 0:13:37and rather an unnerving one, as well.

0:13:37 > 0:13:41I know it seems very boring to harp on it, but diet, exercise,

0:13:41 > 0:13:45alcohol consumption, so important for you to curb all of those.

0:13:47 > 0:13:50'Well, I'd be a fool not to take all that on board.'

0:13:50 > 0:13:51Come on!

0:13:51 > 0:13:54'I'm halfway through and I'm gripped by a new resolve not to be

0:13:54 > 0:13:57'beaten by my new, healthy regime.'

0:13:57 > 0:13:58Keep going!

0:14:00 > 0:14:04Skip, skip, and a hop! Punch!

0:14:06 > 0:14:08Jamie's doing really well, he's really disciplined

0:14:08 > 0:14:09and he's sticking to it.

0:14:09 > 0:14:13That's how much weight I've lost.

0:14:13 > 0:14:15I'm not sure this is suitable for tea-time television!

0:14:15 > 0:14:20This is the fifth week, so I reckon I've lost half a stone.

0:14:20 > 0:14:24- I do feel a sense of achievement. - Good. So you should.- Yeah.

0:14:24 > 0:14:27I think he's now seeing a physical difference in how

0:14:27 > 0:14:31his body is changing and adapting, and I suppose, actually,

0:14:31 > 0:14:33that does give you a bit of motivation, to keep

0:14:33 > 0:14:37going and make sure that he does reach the stone marker.

0:14:37 > 0:14:41Some spinach. Some celery sticks...

0:14:41 > 0:14:43'To help me lose another half a stone, Catrin wants me

0:14:43 > 0:14:46'to increase my metabolism.

0:14:46 > 0:14:49'That means eating more of the right stuff.

0:14:49 > 0:14:53'As well as my three healthy meals, she wants to add in regular snacks.'

0:14:53 > 0:14:56His metabolism is going to shoot up now,

0:14:56 > 0:14:59I mean, fed every three or four hours.

0:14:59 > 0:15:01That means he's going to be burning calories,

0:15:01 > 0:15:04so he will eventually start creating more good, healthy foods.

0:15:04 > 0:15:07Linseed is really high in omega three,

0:15:07 > 0:15:13so I've soaked them overnight and they're a bit gloopy.

0:15:13 > 0:15:14They're a bit like a...

0:15:14 > 0:15:16um...

0:15:16 > 0:15:19- tadpoles type of thing. - Oh, good(!)- Lovely(!)

0:15:27 > 0:15:28Go for it.

0:15:28 > 0:15:31Can I tell you, this looks like one of the most disgusting things

0:15:31 > 0:15:33I've ever drunk in my life?

0:15:33 > 0:15:36But so good for you. Take a good gulp of it.

0:15:45 > 0:15:49- You haven't spat it out yet, that's a good thing.- It's...

0:15:50 > 0:15:51..interesting.

0:16:01 > 0:16:04Catrin wants me to plan my healthy snacks and meals

0:16:04 > 0:16:08a day in advance, but my other half Suzanne knows this might be tricky.

0:16:08 > 0:16:11I think the biggest pitfalls and challenges for Jamie

0:16:11 > 0:16:14are based around the strange hours that he works.

0:16:14 > 0:16:17I can see lots of people eating at their desks

0:16:17 > 0:16:21and it's the usual sort of stuff, bags of crisps and pies.

0:16:21 > 0:16:24Everyone pretty much grazes at their desk,

0:16:24 > 0:16:26which probably isn't terribly healthy.

0:16:26 > 0:16:30Going into the office and creating a programme, having a few hours,

0:16:30 > 0:16:33maybe an hour or a break before the late bulletin,

0:16:33 > 0:16:36but sometimes not coming home until 11 o'clock at night.

0:16:37 > 0:16:39I've just got back from work

0:16:39 > 0:16:44and I'm having a moment of severe weakness and I'm perusing one of my

0:16:44 > 0:16:50favourite Indian takeaways and, to be honest with you, I am fantasising

0:16:50 > 0:16:55about what chicken tikka masala might taste like this evening.

0:16:55 > 0:17:00And after a long day and many days of being good and staying off

0:17:00 > 0:17:06the takeaways and rubbish, and eating lots of healthy things

0:17:06 > 0:17:10I don't think I really like that much,

0:17:10 > 0:17:12I have a yearning for takeaway.

0:17:20 > 0:17:22'Staying on the wagon is tough

0:17:22 > 0:17:26'when all around us we're bombarded by temptation.'

0:17:26 > 0:17:29- CHILDREN:- Good morning, Mr Owen.

0:17:29 > 0:17:31'And if it's hard for me as an adult,

0:17:31 > 0:17:34'it must be even tougher for children like this group

0:17:34 > 0:17:37'of year fives at my old school in Pembroke Dock.'

0:17:37 > 0:17:42- What's your favourite food? - Fish.- Fish?- Cod.- Cod.

0:17:43 > 0:17:47You sound like a really healthy young man.

0:17:47 > 0:17:51But the thing is, we get addicted to rubbish, to junk.

0:17:51 > 0:17:54What's the most naughty thing that you eat that you know

0:17:54 > 0:17:55you really shouldn't?

0:17:56 > 0:17:58- Custard creams.- Custard creams!

0:17:58 > 0:18:02How many custard creams do you have, when you have a custard cream?

0:18:02 > 0:18:03I have...

0:18:03 > 0:18:04HE LAUGHS

0:18:04 > 0:18:07I usually have a whole packet.

0:18:07 > 0:18:09LAUGHTER

0:18:09 > 0:18:12You have a whole packet of custard creams?

0:18:12 > 0:18:15I'm amazed you don't look like a custard cream.

0:18:15 > 0:18:19'Well, we're all allowed our naughty moments, but I wonder what

0:18:19 > 0:18:22'tips these children have to help me stay on track.'

0:18:22 > 0:18:24Stick with it.

0:18:24 > 0:18:27Stick with it? So I can't quit.

0:18:27 > 0:18:30Don't buy junk food, and lock the cupboard.

0:18:30 > 0:18:33Don't buy any junk food and what? Lock the cupboard?

0:18:33 > 0:18:35That's a very good idea, actually.

0:18:35 > 0:18:40- Perhaps think of it as a punishment. - That's really good advice, isn't it?

0:18:40 > 0:18:43- Yeah.- Go jogging in the morning and jogging in the night.

0:18:43 > 0:18:46Jogging in the morning and the night? You're a hard man.

0:18:46 > 0:18:49That's a brutal regime.

0:18:49 > 0:18:51You know, we all know it, don't we?

0:18:51 > 0:18:55They know it, eat the right things, don't eat takeaways,

0:18:55 > 0:18:59don't do snacks, stay off all those sugary drinks and do more exercise.

0:18:59 > 0:19:05It's an interesting thing. We all know what we should do.

0:19:05 > 0:19:08The test is doing it.

0:19:11 > 0:19:12How are you? Nice to see you.

0:19:12 > 0:19:15'Radiologist Dr Simon Blease spends a lot of his time

0:19:15 > 0:19:20'looking at the damage that sweet, sugary foods do to our insides.

0:19:20 > 0:19:24'Today, he's looking at me. That's my stomach on his screen.'

0:19:24 > 0:19:26All this grey mass inside is fat.

0:19:26 > 0:19:29And of course it bulges out sideways, but also forwards,

0:19:29 > 0:19:32to give what you would typically call the potbelly, which is

0:19:32 > 0:19:35the typical male pattern of fat deposition.

0:19:35 > 0:19:38Why have we got a weight problem in the UK?

0:19:38 > 0:19:41I think we've developed a dysfunctional relationship with food.

0:19:41 > 0:19:45And one which has been pushed by the food industry.

0:19:45 > 0:19:48Part of the problem, I believe, is that, for too long,

0:19:48 > 0:19:51we've been fingering the wrong villain.

0:19:51 > 0:19:55We talk about a low-fat diet, we talk about fat being harmful.

0:19:55 > 0:19:57Whereas, in fact, all along,

0:19:57 > 0:20:01it's sugar that is the harmful product in modern food.

0:20:01 > 0:20:04- So you're saying we've got it wrong for years.- Yes.

0:20:04 > 0:20:08'The convenience foods and takeaways I ate in my old life

0:20:08 > 0:20:12'and that we all love often contain hidden sugars.'

0:20:12 > 0:20:15It's the sugar in the food that makes you store fat, which is

0:20:15 > 0:20:17the real problem. It's almost like a drug to us.

0:20:17 > 0:20:20Sugar is doing enormous damage to our health,

0:20:20 > 0:20:25and we can see the consequences of a population hooked on sugar.

0:20:25 > 0:20:28And yet we don't do anything about it, really.

0:20:31 > 0:20:33Quitting is out of the question,

0:20:33 > 0:20:37but why, oh, why doesn't training get any easier?

0:20:37 > 0:20:40I'm sure my fitness fanatic of a brother Richard will have

0:20:40 > 0:20:43a few motivational words for me.

0:20:43 > 0:20:47- It's gone down a bit.- It's gone down a bit? Is that all you can say?

0:20:47 > 0:20:51Is that the most encouragement you can come up with for your more

0:20:51 > 0:20:55- good-looking brother?- It's gone down a bit, I'll give you that.

0:20:55 > 0:20:59But you've still got a bit of work to do. Let's just do a few circuits.

0:20:59 > 0:21:02- Where do you have in mind?- On the perimeter of this nice, lovely park.

0:21:02 > 0:21:04Around the perimeter of the park?

0:21:04 > 0:21:07- Just a section of it, see how you get on.- It's about 32 acres.

0:21:07 > 0:21:09I was kind of assuming

0:21:09 > 0:21:12when we agreed to meet this evening that we would have a circuit

0:21:12 > 0:21:15of the rugby pitch, rather than the entire acreage of the park.

0:21:15 > 0:21:20That's to loosen up. Come on. That's a bit heavy as well.

0:21:20 > 0:21:21It's getting colder.

0:21:22 > 0:21:25'To stay healthy, it is advised

0:21:25 > 0:21:27'we do about 20 minutes of activity every day

0:21:27 > 0:21:31'and about two to three hours of aerobic and muscle-strengthening

0:21:31 > 0:21:33'exercise each week.'

0:21:37 > 0:21:40I can't believe you're not out of breath.

0:21:40 > 0:21:43That normally would be the warm-up.

0:21:44 > 0:21:47That's just the warm-up, on a night like this,

0:21:47 > 0:21:49just to have a good time outdoors. It's good for the mind.

0:21:49 > 0:21:52A good time outdoors for me on a night like tonight is a nice

0:21:52 > 0:21:56picnic down by the side of the river with a bottle of wine and a chiller.

0:21:56 > 0:22:00- Food, drink, food, drink again. - Equals a good time.

0:22:00 > 0:22:05- But there's nothing stopping you in moderation.- Running is the picnic?

0:22:05 > 0:22:08Yeah, but do get three good sessions in.

0:22:08 > 0:22:10Just a bit of cardiovascular work.

0:22:11 > 0:22:15Because that will really help you reach overall fitness.

0:22:15 > 0:22:19'Though I hate to admit it, my brother's advice is right.

0:22:19 > 0:22:21'But old habits die hard.'

0:22:21 > 0:22:23- RAPPING: - Got to get back to my life again

0:22:23 > 0:22:25Don't want to be sidetracked

0:22:25 > 0:22:26Living my life on the edge...

0:22:29 > 0:22:33I've just got back from a couple of days away where I've been

0:22:33 > 0:22:36making a programme walking the coastal paths of Wales.

0:22:37 > 0:22:41It's come-clean time, where I have to admit that,

0:22:41 > 0:22:43at the end of it, the producer

0:22:43 > 0:22:50and I rewarded our extraordinary athleticism with fish and chips.

0:22:50 > 0:22:53Which obviously isn't in the plan.

0:22:54 > 0:23:00I'm hoping that Catrin, my trainer, doesn't get to hear about that.

0:23:02 > 0:23:07Good, OK. Sit back. And push.

0:23:07 > 0:23:10One more. Down. Push up. Good.

0:23:12 > 0:23:14I feel like a man who's been run over by a bus.

0:23:14 > 0:23:16Stop moaning, come on.

0:23:17 > 0:23:21Three. Get up, go. One more. Good.

0:23:24 > 0:23:28'Three punishing gym sessions with Catrin every week could drive

0:23:28 > 0:23:30'a grown man to breaking point.'

0:23:30 > 0:23:33He is changing very quickly.

0:23:34 > 0:23:37From years of desk abuse, we've got

0:23:37 > 0:23:43to fix quite a bit of his body in such a short period of time

0:23:43 > 0:23:46and he's actually doing a miraculous turnaround.

0:23:46 > 0:23:47Exhausting.

0:23:47 > 0:23:50- Did he tell you he had fish and chips last night?- No, he didn't.

0:23:50 > 0:23:52He had fish and chips last night?!

0:24:00 > 0:24:03Jamie, you had fish and chips last night. I've just been told.

0:24:03 > 0:24:05I can't believe you did that.

0:24:05 > 0:24:09'I hope you're not going to be rubbish after this.

0:24:09 > 0:24:12'We're going to have words about this on Monday.'

0:24:12 > 0:24:15I hope you don't have a good weekend, by the way.

0:24:20 > 0:24:24'After a weekend spent dreading the wrath of Catrin,

0:24:24 > 0:24:26'it's time for me to bite the bullet.'

0:24:26 > 0:24:29I can't believe you didn't tell me - that's what hurts the most,

0:24:29 > 0:24:33- Jamie, is that you broke the trust. - I should have told you.

0:24:33 > 0:24:34Because, do you know what?

0:24:34 > 0:24:38It's one thing... Motivation is what gets you here,

0:24:38 > 0:24:43and habit is what makes you do it, isn't it, for the rest of your life?

0:24:43 > 0:24:47- There were quite a few chips. - How many, on average, do you reckon?

0:24:47 > 0:24:50God, I don't know. 100. 100 chips.

0:24:50 > 0:24:52As your reward for having fish and chips,

0:24:52 > 0:24:54you're going to do 100 press-ups.

0:24:56 > 0:24:59So one press-up for each chip that you ate.

0:24:59 > 0:25:03- Yeah.- We'll work on the fish, the battered fish, another day.

0:25:07 > 0:25:11'That's ten sets of ten press-ups on top of my normal session.'

0:25:16 > 0:25:17And up, lift.

0:25:19 > 0:25:22Seven chip, eight chip,

0:25:22 > 0:25:25nine chip, 100 chip!

0:25:31 > 0:25:34It's a tough call. Fish and chips is off the Christmas-card list.

0:25:36 > 0:25:38I'll never darken their door again.

0:25:40 > 0:25:43'Here's hoping my moment of weakness doesn't stop me

0:25:43 > 0:25:45'from reaching my goal.'

0:25:46 > 0:25:50I'm being sent off for a couple of days, making a programme,

0:25:50 > 0:25:53and this is usually where I go wrong on my regime.

0:25:53 > 0:25:57It gets to lunch time and I bolt to the garage and buy a pork pie,

0:25:57 > 0:26:01some crisps and sandwiches, a can of something unmentionable,

0:26:01 > 0:26:05and bang goes the regime. So, a little bit of forward planning.

0:26:05 > 0:26:07This time, I'm taking a packed lunch.

0:26:07 > 0:26:09I'll be chewing a carrot, just like Bugs Bunny.

0:26:09 > 0:26:12I'll be starving by two o'clock.

0:26:14 > 0:26:17He's enjoying it, aren't you? When you can see a slight difference.

0:26:17 > 0:26:21- Not enjoying it.- Well, you are enjoying the results.

0:26:21 > 0:26:23You're not enjoying the process, maybe.

0:26:23 > 0:26:26But I'm amazed at how disciplined you've been, because I didn't

0:26:26 > 0:26:29think you would find it easy to actually stick to it.

0:26:29 > 0:26:30I don't find it easy.

0:26:30 > 0:26:33There's no point doing anything that isn't sustainable,

0:26:33 > 0:26:36because you just give it up. You hate it and you give it up.

0:26:37 > 0:26:41It's been a long, hard ten weeks, but I certainly feel healthier

0:26:41 > 0:26:42for it. The big question is,

0:26:42 > 0:26:47will I make the grade in Catrin's final fitness tests?

0:26:47 > 0:26:49And while I'm put through my paces,

0:26:49 > 0:26:52little do I know I'm being watched by some sneaky onlookers.

0:26:56 > 0:26:59- You fought like a girl when you first started.- I was being gentlemanly.

0:27:04 > 0:27:09- Keep going, Jamie. - Keep going, get to 30.

0:27:09 > 0:27:12- 22. 23.- Go on, Jamie!

0:27:14 > 0:27:18- Oh! Well done.- 23! That's incredible. Well done.

0:27:18 > 0:27:22'Well, 23 in one go is a first for me.'

0:27:23 > 0:27:26You can't pinch an inch any more, can you?

0:27:26 > 0:27:30'But at the end of my challenge, just how much weight have I lost?'

0:27:31 > 0:27:35100. So you've lost 8cm.

0:27:37 > 0:27:4291.7. That's...14 stone.

0:27:42 > 0:27:46- So over a stone.- Well done.

0:27:46 > 0:27:49I feel a sense of personal satisfaction.

0:27:49 > 0:27:52There are a lot of people around me, largely my family,

0:27:52 > 0:27:56who thought I could never do it. So, having done it, I feel smug.

0:27:56 > 0:27:59You've done so well, and you look so fit and trim.

0:27:59 > 0:28:01Make sure you keep it up.

0:28:01 > 0:28:05I honestly thought he would have a tremendous job losing the weight,

0:28:05 > 0:28:08especially with the sort of job that he's got.

0:28:08 > 0:28:10He's done very well, I'm very proud of him.

0:28:10 > 0:28:15I like the way that he's learnt to get to know his body again.

0:28:15 > 0:28:16He's moving right

0:28:16 > 0:28:20and he's woken up some muscles that had definitely fallen asleep.

0:28:20 > 0:28:23It's a massive achievement for somebody who's not really

0:28:23 > 0:28:28- been to the gym hardly ever.- I'm going to carry on with this regime.

0:28:28 > 0:28:30It will have been a complete waste of everyone's time,

0:28:30 > 0:28:34including mine, if I put loads of weight back on

0:28:34 > 0:28:39and go back to my old ways, so I'm going to give it a go.
