0:00:04 > 0:00:08Tara Hammett is a fitness instructor from Swansea.

0:00:12 > 0:00:13When her husband, Justin,

0:00:13 > 0:00:15swapped a job digging the roads

0:00:15 > 0:00:18for a job in the offices of the DVLA,

0:00:18 > 0:00:19Tara noticed a change.

0:00:19 > 0:00:21Within a couple of weeks,

0:00:21 > 0:00:25we noticed that he wasn't feeling as fit as he used to,

0:00:25 > 0:00:27and not as strong as he was.

0:00:27 > 0:00:29His fitness was deteriorating.

0:00:30 > 0:00:32If Justin could change in weeks,

0:00:32 > 0:00:37what happens to people when they sit down to work for decades?

0:00:38 > 0:00:40Tara resolved to find out

0:00:40 > 0:00:42and change things for the better.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45Look at all those cakeys!

0:00:47 > 0:00:50What she did was challenging...

0:00:50 > 0:00:53terrifying...

0:00:53 > 0:00:55and sometimes confusing.

0:00:55 > 0:00:57- All right, babes?- Mm-hm.

0:00:57 > 0:00:59Shock to the system.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02It shook the lives of all those it touched

0:01:02 > 0:01:05and challenged offices everywhere

0:01:05 > 0:01:07to rethink the way we work.

0:01:17 > 0:01:19The government office of the DVLA

0:01:19 > 0:01:22is based in a 16-storey block in Swansea.

0:01:22 > 0:01:27It's dominated the city skyline for 40 years

0:01:27 > 0:01:31and today employs some 5,000 local people.

0:01:33 > 0:01:36To find out if any of them share her husband Justin's experience,

0:01:36 > 0:01:38Tara has permission to meet

0:01:38 > 0:01:41some of the people who work inside.

0:01:41 > 0:01:43Do you mind if I ask you a couple of questions

0:01:43 > 0:01:45whilst you're busy working away there?

0:01:45 > 0:01:48I'm just wondering if I could ask you a couple of questions today.

0:01:48 > 0:01:51- Do you mind if I ask you a few questions?- No, that's fine.

0:01:51 > 0:01:52Excellent.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55- You're sitting down, I'd say, 95% of the time.- Oh, my gosh.

0:01:55 > 0:01:57I've been doing this job now for 13 years,

0:01:57 > 0:02:03and the result is lots of weight put on and stuff like that.

0:02:03 > 0:02:07I have no motivation to do anything when I get home.

0:02:07 > 0:02:10I've only been here this month so far, it's a new job.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12But I'm finding myself becoming lazier.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16Four out of five of us now work at desks jobs,

0:02:16 > 0:02:19and studies reveal that inactivity

0:02:19 > 0:02:22in work can quickly lead to inactivity at home.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25I've been here a couple of hours chatting with people.

0:02:25 > 0:02:29It's like some kind of infectious sedentary disease.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32I hope I'm resistant to it!

0:02:32 > 0:02:36- I think it's about time I got up and did something, to be honest!- Yeah.

0:02:36 > 0:02:38I'm going to have a think about it.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42Tara is scratching the surface

0:02:42 > 0:02:45of an issue that is sweeping Western society.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47Hi, I'm just going to come down the Dragon now.

0:02:47 > 0:02:5150 years ago, it was discovered that people who sit down all day

0:02:51 > 0:02:55are much more likely to live shorter lives than people who move around.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58Since then, we have been increasingly sitting down to work,

0:02:58 > 0:03:01getting bigger and dying earlier.

0:03:01 > 0:03:03Tara wants to see if she can help

0:03:03 > 0:03:06and wants to test her ideas on a team drawn from across the DVLA.

0:03:08 > 0:03:09Definitely.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12Definitely going to be working with this one.

0:03:12 > 0:03:13She's definitely in.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16Yeah, that'll be fab.

0:03:16 > 0:03:18Having made her choice,

0:03:18 > 0:03:21Tara's ready to meet her team for the first time.

0:03:24 > 0:03:28Morning, guys. How are you all feeling? All right?

0:03:28 > 0:03:31First of all I just want to say a big massive thank you

0:03:31 > 0:03:35for all agreeing to take part in this experiment.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37First things first, we're going on the bus.

0:03:37 > 0:03:39I want to check you all out.

0:03:42 > 0:03:44Life's changing now!

0:03:49 > 0:03:50Before Tara begins in earnest,

0:03:50 > 0:03:53she's taking her team to Gower College

0:03:53 > 0:03:55for a full health check.

0:03:55 > 0:03:57All right, OK, jump on, then.

0:04:00 > 0:04:02Tracy Phillips is a self-confessed sugar addict

0:04:02 > 0:04:06who avoids exercise at all costs.

0:04:06 > 0:04:08They're very accurate, these.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11Kirsty Evans joined the DVLA a month ago

0:04:11 > 0:04:13but has already putting on a stone.

0:04:15 > 0:04:16Ashleigh Williams has a secret

0:04:16 > 0:04:19that means he won't up his heart rate.

0:04:22 > 0:04:25Rob Hudson is embarrassed to be outrun by his daughter.

0:04:25 > 0:04:27184.5.

0:04:27 > 0:04:31Jackie Francis is a serial dieter who wants to stop bouncing back.

0:04:33 > 0:04:37And Carole Hughes put on so much weight sitting still

0:04:37 > 0:04:39that her knees crumbled.

0:04:39 > 0:04:41168 and a half.

0:04:41 > 0:04:44Tara's first discovery

0:04:44 > 0:04:47is that her team share their experiences and issues

0:04:47 > 0:04:49with people from right across the country.

0:04:49 > 0:04:51I think, in Wales, they're typical of people

0:04:51 > 0:04:53who work in offices,

0:04:53 > 0:04:57remembering that we are one of the fattest nations on earth.

0:04:57 > 0:05:01It's a fact that's now hitting us hard.

0:05:01 > 0:05:05It's the biggest cause of death, obesity, in this country.

0:05:05 > 0:05:09It can cause heart disease.

0:05:09 > 0:05:10It can cause cancer.

0:05:10 > 0:05:14It is causing an epidemic of type 2 diabetes.

0:05:14 > 0:05:17It is a huge problem that needs to be addressed

0:05:17 > 0:05:20and it's getting worse.

0:05:20 > 0:05:23Tara has asked her team to bring a packed lunch

0:05:23 > 0:05:25to get them through the afternoon,

0:05:25 > 0:05:28but she's surprised by what is produced.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31Strawberry-flavoured cereal. Would you like some?

0:05:31 > 0:05:33This pot will probably last about two days,

0:05:33 > 0:05:36- and I'll just graze at it throughout the week.- And is this for afters?

0:05:36 > 0:05:41- Yeah.- Very interesting again. That's another first for me.

0:05:41 > 0:05:45Some jelly jots and now strawberry cereal shapes.

0:05:49 > 0:05:5318-stone Tracy has been processing driving licences

0:05:53 > 0:05:54for the agency for six years.

0:05:57 > 0:06:00In that time, she's put on four and a half stone.

0:06:00 > 0:06:02After just a few minutes,

0:06:02 > 0:06:05Tracy drops out of the afternoon's first test.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07Deep breathing. You're doing fab.

0:06:07 > 0:06:09That's good. Catch your breath back.

0:06:09 > 0:06:13That's it. No, you did amazing. Well done. Big, deep breathing.

0:06:13 > 0:06:14That's it. Good job.

0:06:18 > 0:06:23That's it. Your breathing's come down loads and loads. You're doing fab.

0:06:23 > 0:06:24OK?

0:06:26 > 0:06:30I always feel as if people are staring at me.

0:06:30 > 0:06:34I always feel as if somebody's whispering.

0:06:34 > 0:06:35Kind of, "Look at her,

0:06:35 > 0:06:37"look at what she's wearing,

0:06:37 > 0:06:40"she's too big to be wearing something like that."

0:06:40 > 0:06:42- INTERVIEWER:- How much exercise do you do now?

0:06:42 > 0:06:44Honestly? I walk to and from the car

0:06:44 > 0:06:48from the office, and that's about it.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52The tests show that inactivity and poor diet

0:06:52 > 0:06:54have resulted in every member of the team

0:06:54 > 0:06:58being heavier and less fit than they should be.

0:06:58 > 0:07:02The real surprise is for the DVLA's new recruit, Kirsty Evans.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05There's 26% body fat,

0:07:05 > 0:07:08which is not obese, but it is more than the average

0:07:08 > 0:07:10for women, more than you should be.

0:07:10 > 0:07:13'With young women, sometimes they can look in good shape,

0:07:13 > 0:07:16'but when you actually test them,'

0:07:16 > 0:07:19what we find is there's very little muscle there,

0:07:19 > 0:07:20and what you're seeing is all fat.

0:07:20 > 0:07:22The calculation takes into account the visceral fat,

0:07:22 > 0:07:25which is around your organs, inside your body.

0:07:25 > 0:07:27It's much more detrimental to your health, and that you can't see

0:07:27 > 0:07:29from the outside.

0:07:29 > 0:07:31The whole team are in shock. Everyone's like,

0:07:31 > 0:07:34"You're the smallest person on the team. How can you be overweight?"

0:07:34 > 0:07:38But if that's what they say, that's what they say, isn't it?

0:07:38 > 0:07:41She looks lovely, but she's not of a healthy body.

0:07:41 > 0:07:43If she's not careful,

0:07:43 > 0:07:46if she sits down at the desk in DVLA for the next 20 years,

0:07:46 > 0:07:49things could get out of control.

0:07:49 > 0:07:53Though the toughest news of all is kept for Tracy.

0:07:53 > 0:07:55Anything over 35, 40,

0:07:55 > 0:07:57would be clinically obese.

0:07:57 > 0:07:59Your BMI came out as 48.

0:07:59 > 0:08:03That means there's a high propensity for certain diseases,

0:08:03 > 0:08:05especially cardiac, heart disease.

0:08:05 > 0:08:09It's classified as morbidly obese, because it is likely

0:08:09 > 0:08:12- that you will cut your life shorter than it should be...- Yeah.

0:08:12 > 0:08:15..by the fact that you carry it. OK?

0:08:15 > 0:08:18You've made probably the hardest step.

0:08:18 > 0:08:22- One month with Tara, and you'll be on the road to recovery. OK?- Yes.

0:08:22 > 0:08:24But then you've got to keep it going.

0:08:24 > 0:08:27- You've got to keep it going for ever.- Mm-hm.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30- All right?- Yes.- So I hope you understand. And you will do it.- Yes.

0:08:34 > 0:08:38Until recently, Swansea was characterised

0:08:38 > 0:08:42by the physically demanding jobs of heavy industry.

0:08:42 > 0:08:45It's been estimated that someone working with steel,

0:08:45 > 0:08:49tin or core would have been using 350 calories every hour.

0:08:52 > 0:08:54As those traditional industries declined,

0:08:54 > 0:08:57a new kind of work began to appear,

0:08:57 > 0:09:02spearheaded by a major arrival in Swansea in the early '70s.

0:09:02 > 0:09:06- NEWSREADER:- The system for licensing drivers and vehicles in Britain

0:09:06 > 0:09:09has been changed, and most of the work transferred

0:09:09 > 0:09:11to one single central location.

0:09:15 > 0:09:19These girls have found themselves a new job.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22They work in the Department of the Environment's

0:09:22 > 0:09:25Driver and Vehicle Licensing Centre in Swansea.

0:09:25 > 0:09:28Built specially to issue licences for every driver and vehicle

0:09:28 > 0:09:30in Britain,

0:09:30 > 0:09:34it's a place crammed full of up-to-date methods and ideas.

0:09:37 > 0:09:42While traditional industries demand 350 calories per hour,

0:09:42 > 0:09:44office work needs less than 100.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49The rise of the office has helped to make us

0:09:49 > 0:09:51the least active generation that there has ever been

0:09:51 > 0:09:55and contributes to the expanding waistline of the nation.

0:09:56 > 0:09:58When I started working here,

0:09:58 > 0:10:00that's when it started gaining.

0:10:00 > 0:10:01I lost a lot of weight

0:10:01 > 0:10:03where I worked before.

0:10:03 > 0:10:05It was a physical job.

0:10:05 > 0:10:08But here it's just a gradual thing.

0:10:08 > 0:10:10You don't really notice it going on until all of a sudden,

0:10:10 > 0:10:12you're like, "Whoa," you know?

0:10:14 > 0:10:16One doctor has recently said

0:10:16 > 0:10:20that Wales is now hurtling into an ill health tsunami.

0:10:20 > 0:10:23OK, so, nice and high with those knees...

0:10:23 > 0:10:26Tara is setting up the barricades.

0:10:26 > 0:10:30She wants to reboot her inactive team by getting activity

0:10:30 > 0:10:33into every working day.

0:10:33 > 0:10:35Five, four, three, two...

0:10:35 > 0:10:39She's arranged a month-long programme of lunchtime events

0:10:39 > 0:10:42and is starting with a short, sharp work out.

0:10:42 > 0:10:46Flipping 'eck, man, I'm going to have to give some punishments, ain't I?

0:10:46 > 0:10:50It comes as a shock to the team, especially Tracy,

0:10:50 > 0:10:53who has always struggled with exercise.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56All right, Trace?

0:10:56 > 0:10:59How was that? OK? Are you all right?

0:10:59 > 0:11:02OK, and relax.

0:11:02 > 0:11:04'I tried to do a 10K walk last year,

0:11:04 > 0:11:06'which was a disaster.'

0:11:06 > 0:11:09When I was telling people about it, it was like, "You, seriously?

0:11:09 > 0:11:12"You're going to do that? It's never going to happen."

0:11:12 > 0:11:14Because you're the overweight girl,

0:11:14 > 0:11:16you're not going to be able to do it.

0:11:16 > 0:11:18I didn't actually complete it. They were right.

0:11:18 > 0:11:21I did only manage to do about 2K

0:11:21 > 0:11:23before it was just too much.

0:11:26 > 0:11:28Later that evening,

0:11:28 > 0:11:31Tara calls to see Tracy at home.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36- Hello, Tracy.- Hello. - I've come for a chat.

0:11:36 > 0:11:39- Do you think it's time for a chat? - Yeah, certainly. Come on in.

0:11:39 > 0:11:42Let's do it. Oh, wow, look at this here. You've got a treadmill.

0:11:42 > 0:11:45How long's that been there for?

0:11:45 > 0:11:47About a year, coming up to.

0:11:47 > 0:11:51- Doing a good job of holding your clothes up.- Yes, awesome job.

0:11:51 > 0:11:54- Come through.- Fab.

0:11:54 > 0:11:59- We know that your diet is not the best.- Yes.

0:11:59 > 0:12:01All the things that you are eating

0:12:01 > 0:12:05- and what you've been choosing is around. Just get everything out.- OK.

0:12:05 > 0:12:08See all the cupboards here?

0:12:08 > 0:12:11- Obviously filled with Jaffa Cakes. - OK.

0:12:11 > 0:12:15Biscuit cupboards. Lots of chocolate biscuits.

0:12:15 > 0:12:18- Yes. Oh, my gosh! - This is my snack drawer.

0:12:19 > 0:12:23- Oh, my goodness! How deep is this thing?- Fairly deep.

0:12:23 > 0:12:27To be fair, those are Ian's for work.

0:12:27 > 0:12:28Do you get tempted by these?

0:12:28 > 0:12:30Sometimes. More tempted by those.

0:12:32 > 0:12:34Hi, Ian. Come out.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37- I've been raiding the cupboards here.- OK.

0:12:37 > 0:12:40And your name comes up quite a lot.

0:12:40 > 0:12:42In all honesty, Ian does everything.

0:12:42 > 0:12:46I am the pampered princess who sits on the sofa, reads her books

0:12:46 > 0:12:49- and watches TV with the dog.- OK.

0:12:49 > 0:12:50I don't do anything.

0:12:50 > 0:12:53Ian does the cooking. He does the shopping. He does the washing up.

0:12:53 > 0:12:55He does the laundry. He does the ironing.

0:12:55 > 0:12:57He takes the dog out for a walk. He does the cleaning.

0:12:57 > 0:12:59He does everything.

0:12:59 > 0:13:01Do you think you're doing Tracy any favours by actually agreeing

0:13:01 > 0:13:04- to do it all?- Probably not, no. But it's easier.

0:13:04 > 0:13:07So how about, then, changing the relationship

0:13:07 > 0:13:09here between you two?

0:13:09 > 0:13:11And do you think it would be a doable thing

0:13:11 > 0:13:16that you did a little bit less and you did a little bit more?

0:13:16 > 0:13:19- We could do that. - Yeah. Can do that.

0:13:19 > 0:13:23This draw here needs to be eliminated.

0:13:24 > 0:13:27- OK. I can lock it in a safe. - Or put it up high.

0:13:27 > 0:13:29You know me, I won't climb up high for it.

0:13:29 > 0:13:32Maybe if we could put it up really high, if you've got to have it.

0:13:32 > 0:13:34Yeah, cool.

0:13:34 > 0:13:36And I think, when it comes to the meals,

0:13:36 > 0:13:39you're going to cook more, you're going to cook less.

0:13:39 > 0:13:42But support and make sure that everything you're surrounded by

0:13:42 > 0:13:44is going to support your health goals.

0:13:44 > 0:13:47- BOTH:- Yep. Shake on it?- Woo hoo.

0:13:47 > 0:13:49How did it get this way?

0:13:49 > 0:13:52Do you know what, I really do don't know.

0:13:52 > 0:13:53I've always had issues with food.

0:13:53 > 0:13:57The larger I got, the less I started doing around the house.

0:13:57 > 0:14:00I suppose I've used it as an excuse, then,

0:14:00 > 0:14:02to not do anything, because I'm safer

0:14:02 > 0:14:04if I just sit in my corner and hibernate.

0:14:04 > 0:14:07- You used to be slim?- Yes.

0:14:07 > 0:14:09When Ian and I met, I was a size 10.

0:14:09 > 0:14:14When we got married, I was a size 14-16.

0:14:14 > 0:14:15Now I'm a size 24.

0:14:15 > 0:14:17We do need to change.

0:21:07 > 0:21:09I'll watch! I'll watch!

0:21:09 > 0:21:13In a way, I wanted to have a panic attack and walk away,

0:21:13 > 0:21:17but another bit of me was saying, "Come on, give it a go."

0:21:17 > 0:21:19- Wow!- How do think you will do?

0:21:19 > 0:21:21I don't know yet until it's filled up with water.

0:21:32 > 0:21:34My daughter has always been the active one,

0:21:34 > 0:21:38- and I always thought, "I will watch."- Yeah.

0:21:38 > 0:21:40Carole is quite scared at the moment.

0:21:40 > 0:21:44It would be nice for her not to be a spectator like she's told us,

0:22:12 > 0:22:15Can I get out now?

0:22:15 > 0:22:18I don't like this.

0:22:18 > 0:22:23- I'm going to be out of this. - You'll be fine.- Just hang onto me.

0:22:23 > 0:22:27Oh, I can't do it. Oh!

0:22:27 > 0:22:30I was like, "Here we go, you're going to do this, Carole."

0:22:30 > 0:22:33You know you see on the films when they come to edge of a waterfall,

0:22:33 > 0:22:36and you're like, "Oh, my God!"

0:22:41 > 0:22:45White-water rafting uses up to 350 calories per hour,

0:22:45 > 0:22:51the same number that people once used every hour of the working day.

0:22:51 > 0:22:53First, we went over that first bit of rapid,

0:22:53 > 0:22:56and then it was, "Come on," and there was a sploosh of water over our face.

0:22:56 > 0:22:59Come on, let's do it, it was brilliant.

0:23:05 > 0:23:09It was exhilarating, it was scary, but it was exciting.

0:23:09 > 0:23:11It was just a whole range of emotions,

0:23:11 > 0:23:14you knew you were going down that dip and the water's going to come

0:23:14 > 0:23:17and the boat would go from side to side, and that's scary.

0:23:17 > 0:23:20I was like, "Come on, let's do it, let's do it, let's do it!."

0:23:20 > 0:23:23I was really, really excited, it was so much fun.

0:23:23 > 0:23:25SHOUTING

0:23:28 > 0:23:31Maybe they have watched things like this and thought,

0:23:31 > 0:23:33"I would like to do that, but it is not for me,

0:23:33 > 0:23:36"I'm not one of those people," and now they are realising

0:23:36 > 0:23:39they ARE those people, they CAN be getting stuck into things.

0:23:39 > 0:23:42SCREAMING

0:23:42 > 0:23:44That was amazing, and I never in a million years thought

0:23:44 > 0:23:46I would be doing something like that.

0:23:46 > 0:23:48It was so much fun,

0:23:48 > 0:23:50and the adrenaline is still pumping now, to be honest.

0:23:50 > 0:23:54I'm shaking with it, it was absolutely amazing.

0:23:58 > 0:24:01While people in the past used up energy just living,

0:24:01 > 0:24:05we've eliminated that effort from our lives.

0:24:05 > 0:24:08Tara's job is getting it back in.

0:24:08 > 0:24:11And knees up. OK, faster. Up, up, up, up.

0:24:11 > 0:24:14Rob Hudson was once a rugby-playing Navy man

0:24:14 > 0:24:17and knows what it is like to do hard physical work.

0:24:17 > 0:24:21But now, in the DVLA call centre,

0:24:21 > 0:24:24his weight has almost reached 20 stone.

0:24:24 > 0:24:29And Rob has a very personal reason to have joined Tara's experiment.

0:24:29 > 0:24:32I've got a little daughter, who is four,

0:24:32 > 0:24:34and she'd like me to chase the dog around the garden,

0:24:34 > 0:24:36but it's easier to pretend to fall over and miss the dog,

0:24:36 > 0:24:39than have to run round like a headless chicken, because

0:24:39 > 0:24:42a couple of minutes, and I am already out of breath or panting.

0:24:43 > 0:24:47I had an experience, just over two years ago,

0:24:47 > 0:24:50where I lost a second child that my wife was going to be having.

0:24:50 > 0:24:54The memory of him, obviously, it is a big part of my life

0:24:54 > 0:24:56and a big part of our family's life,

0:24:56 > 0:25:01but I would like him to be proud of the dad he would have had.

0:25:01 > 0:25:05While Rob's personal circumstance means he throws himself

0:25:05 > 0:25:10into Tara's sessions, that is not the case for everyone in the group.

0:25:10 > 0:25:13Come on, Ashleigh. Go, go, go!

0:25:13 > 0:25:16You did not come here for an easy session. Ashleigh.

0:25:16 > 0:25:18I didn't say hip extensions.

0:25:18 > 0:25:21Push the dumbbells up in the air, guys, six, five...

0:25:21 > 0:25:23Ashleigh Williams is 28

0:25:23 > 0:25:27and should be one of the most active members of the team,

0:25:27 > 0:25:30but Tara feels there is something holding him back.

0:25:30 > 0:25:33Ashleigh, come on, get back in the room. No escaping!

0:25:33 > 0:25:36It does feel as if she is on my back more than anyone else's.

0:25:36 > 0:25:39You can feel like you're a horse being rode around the place.

0:25:39 > 0:25:41Like, "Come on, do it, get back in!"

0:25:41 > 0:25:44"Ashleigh!" every time I turn my back.

0:25:44 > 0:25:48Ashleigh, and deep and press, get those muscles working hard now.

0:25:48 > 0:25:53- Come on.- Sometimes I feel like telling her to shove it.

0:25:55 > 0:25:59- Hello, Ash.- Hi, are you OK? - Yeah, you?- Not too bad.

0:25:59 > 0:26:01Come on. Did you enjoy that, then?

0:26:01 > 0:26:06- Yeah, it is good.- Cool. - I feel like you're on my back a lot.

0:26:06 > 0:26:08- Do you think?- Yeah, a lot more than the others.

0:26:08 > 0:26:11OK. There is a bit of holding back in you, though, isn't there?

0:26:11 > 0:26:13I don't know.

0:26:13 > 0:26:16I suppose it is confidence with regards to...

0:26:16 > 0:26:18just pushing myself a little bit further.

0:26:18 > 0:26:21And what is holding you back and not feeling

0:26:21 > 0:26:24that you can give it everything?

0:26:24 > 0:26:28Yeah, from we met,

0:26:28 > 0:26:32it is more of the circumstances, I lost my mother,

0:26:32 > 0:26:36just like, um...

0:26:36 > 0:26:40really suddenly - one day she was there, happy,

0:26:40 > 0:26:43then I went to a friend's party and stuff and then the next day,

0:26:43 > 0:26:47had a phone call about six o'clock to go home and...

0:26:47 > 0:26:53she had died. It was like a heart attack, they said.

0:26:53 > 0:26:57Something similar happened to her mother.

0:26:57 > 0:27:01And when I'm...

0:27:01 > 0:27:05when I am pushing myself and trying to push myself,

0:27:05 > 0:27:08this thing comes in the back of my mind, "What if?

0:27:08 > 0:27:13"What if I push myself too hard and all of a sudden, I just drop?"

0:27:13 > 0:27:16I've got a little boy to think of as well, and a family.

0:27:16 > 0:27:20- So, yes, it is really difficult for me to push on.- Yeah.

0:27:20 > 0:27:25Since losing his mum, Ashleigh has given up exercise completely,

0:27:25 > 0:27:28along with the sport he once loved.

0:27:28 > 0:27:30Football was everything.

0:27:30 > 0:27:33I would go to play football on Saturday,

0:27:33 > 0:27:38and you would run until you couldn't run no more.

0:27:43 > 0:27:48It is now two years since Ashleigh completed a game of football.

0:27:48 > 0:27:50Tara needs to find out what is really going on

0:27:50 > 0:27:53and has arranged for a visit to St George's in London,

0:27:53 > 0:27:57one of Britain's biggest heart hospitals.

0:27:57 > 0:28:00- You all right there?- Yeah. - Lift your arm up for me.

0:28:00 > 0:28:03That is lovely. Thank you.

0:28:03 > 0:28:05There is a tendency for people to be worried

0:28:05 > 0:28:08if they have learned that there is a family history of conditions

0:28:08 > 0:28:12that may cause sudden death, and I think it is for this reason

0:28:12 > 0:28:15that people like Ashleigh, if there is a family history,

0:28:15 > 0:28:17such as the ominous one that he portrayed,

0:28:17 > 0:28:21should be tested before we push them into exercise.

0:28:21 > 0:28:24Pop this probe into the centre of your chest

0:28:24 > 0:28:26and take some images of your heart.

0:28:34 > 0:28:37Your heart rate at the moment is 150.

0:28:39 > 0:28:42It is a stage three, yes.

0:28:46 > 0:28:49The ECG that we saw did not show any signs of your heart

0:28:49 > 0:28:53being deprived of oxygen, didn't show your heart demonstrating

0:28:53 > 0:28:57- any features of a dangerous rhythm. - Thank you.

0:28:57 > 0:29:01It does not show me any signs of an underlying dangerous condition.

0:29:01 > 0:29:05The paradox is that if you hold back from exercise

0:29:05 > 0:29:08in this particular situation where you have got a family history

0:29:08 > 0:29:11of blocked arteries, there is a much higher risk

0:29:11 > 0:29:16of you developing obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes

0:29:16 > 0:29:20and all the risk factors that result in people blocking their arteries

0:29:20 > 0:29:23in their 50s and 60s. OK?

0:29:23 > 0:29:25Thank you much.

0:29:25 > 0:29:28I feel like a lot of pressure has been taken off me.

0:29:28 > 0:29:30It's like the dark clouds moved to the side.

0:29:30 > 0:29:34This has made me realise... it is a good feeling.

0:29:34 > 0:29:37Just to know.

0:29:37 > 0:29:39Yay! Yeah.

0:29:39 > 0:29:42Let's go! OK.

0:29:42 > 0:29:45Back at the DVLA, Ashleigh's transformation

0:29:45 > 0:29:49- is immediately obvious.- Well done, Ash, that's the way. Nice!

0:29:49 > 0:29:52Strong. Make sure you are bracing in the trunk, there.

0:29:52 > 0:29:54Tara has used the daily workouts

0:29:54 > 0:29:57to shock the team out of their inactive habits.

0:29:57 > 0:30:00Pushing hard and let's go!

0:30:00 > 0:30:02Elbows, knees up!

0:30:02 > 0:30:04Squats! Star jumps!

0:30:04 > 0:30:08It is reckoned something as simple as a brisk half-hour walk every day

0:30:08 > 0:30:12will extend the average lifespan by seven years.

0:30:12 > 0:30:16Do you guys come out for walks often on your break?

0:30:16 > 0:30:18- Try to.- Try to?

0:30:18 > 0:30:19- Yeah.- Tracy, don't do it?

0:30:19 > 0:30:22No.

0:30:22 > 0:30:24Now, Tara wants to start introducing the team to new habits

0:30:24 > 0:30:27they can fit into a working day.

0:30:27 > 0:30:30How we doing, guys? All good?

0:30:30 > 0:30:31After his clean bill of health,

0:30:31 > 0:30:33Ashleigh is now leading from the front.

0:30:37 > 0:30:39There have been rumours about Tracy's commitment,

0:30:39 > 0:30:42and Ashleigh decides to have it out with her.

0:30:42 > 0:30:45I don't need to prove anything to anybody.

0:30:45 > 0:30:47- I need to prove it to myself. - Exactly.

0:30:47 > 0:30:49Do it for yourself, then.

0:30:49 > 0:30:50Don't get upset.

0:30:52 > 0:30:53You OK?

0:30:55 > 0:30:58Erm, people are questioning

0:30:58 > 0:31:01whether I'm really up for this, cos I'm not involved enough.

0:31:02 > 0:31:04I get people in my ear saying,

0:31:04 > 0:31:10"She's having fry-ups, she's having this." In work, whatever.

0:31:10 > 0:31:12She had two Welsh cakes and a Cornetto

0:31:12 > 0:31:13and a cup of tea with sugar in?

0:31:13 > 0:31:16I just think she needed that little push now...

0:31:16 > 0:31:18and see what her reaction is.

0:31:18 > 0:31:19OK. OK.

0:31:21 > 0:31:23Tara asks to talk to Tracy, to ask why

0:31:23 > 0:31:27she isn't making the changes to extend her life.

0:31:28 > 0:31:32I needed sugar. I had that craving - I had to have it.

0:31:32 > 0:31:35You're all talking about me, you're all judging me, I don't like that.

0:31:35 > 0:31:36I get judged enough anyway,

0:31:36 > 0:31:39I don't need to be judged by a new set of people.

0:31:39 > 0:31:41I'm going to slip up. I'm a sugar addict, I always have been.

0:31:41 > 0:31:43It's hard...

0:31:44 > 0:31:45..but it really upset me

0:31:45 > 0:31:49to think that they're all sitting around talking about me,

0:31:49 > 0:31:51judging me, that I'm not good enough.

0:31:56 > 0:32:00Tracy knows she needs to change but has convinced herself that,

0:32:00 > 0:32:03as a sugar addict, real change is not possible.

0:32:06 > 0:32:08Tara has come up with a way to prove that total

0:32:08 > 0:32:12and permanent change is within the grasp of anyone who wants it.

0:32:14 > 0:32:17Before you go and have a shower and get back to work,

0:32:17 > 0:32:20I've got a little invitation for you all, OK?

0:32:20 > 0:32:23One, two, thank you.

0:32:23 > 0:32:26Thank you.

0:32:26 > 0:32:32Chris, 18 stone - smoker, drinker and likes food.

0:32:32 > 0:32:35Ooh, Aberavon Beach - 4pm. See you there.

0:32:40 > 0:32:43Tara wants to show that transformation is absolutely

0:32:43 > 0:32:46possible, however unlikely it might seem

0:32:46 > 0:32:49to some of the team at the moment.

0:32:49 > 0:32:52Our guest should be with us shortly.

0:32:52 > 0:32:55I'm intrigued. THEY CHUCKLE

0:32:55 > 0:32:57Is that him there?

0:32:57 > 0:32:59There is a dog and it's a collie.

0:32:59 > 0:33:02- There was a collie in the picture. - Yeah, dogs are allowed on the beach.

0:33:02 > 0:33:04The only way I clicked is

0:33:04 > 0:33:08because I remember in the photo with the collie puppy.

0:33:08 > 0:33:11I would like to introduce you now to Chris Fulcher,

0:33:11 > 0:33:16who now runs marathons for Wales.

0:33:16 > 0:33:17As you can probably tell,

0:33:17 > 0:33:20the invitation I gave you this morning was a little

0:33:20 > 0:33:24out of date - the puppy is now a little bit older,

0:33:24 > 0:33:28and, as you can see, Chris has clearly transformed his life.

0:33:28 > 0:33:30How bad was your lifestyle before? What was it like?

0:33:30 > 0:33:32Um...

0:33:32 > 0:33:35I don't think I'd be here now if I'd carried on with my lifestyle.

0:33:35 > 0:33:39I was over 18 stone, smoking, drinking, had my own business,

0:33:39 > 0:33:41let everybody do the hard work for me.

0:33:41 > 0:33:45My father had a heart attack, gave me a bit of a wake-up call.

0:33:45 > 0:33:48My business went down the pan, and I came down here.

0:33:48 > 0:33:51I started running - you see the letters?

0:33:51 > 0:33:54I started at A - I didn't get through A, I was on my knees,

0:33:54 > 0:33:56coughing and throwing my guts up.

0:33:56 > 0:33:58No good at all.

0:33:58 > 0:34:03Persevered, carried on for about a fortnight and I got run, walk,

0:34:03 > 0:34:06run, walk, but I got down to the end.

0:34:06 > 0:34:08Picked up the phone, all excited, phoned the wife.

0:34:08 > 0:34:11"Excellent, I've just run about a mile. I'm really excited.

0:34:11 > 0:34:15"Only problem is, you're going to have to get me in the car, cos I can't run back."

0:34:15 > 0:34:18THEY LAUGH So that's where it all started from.

0:34:18 > 0:34:21- Chris, how many marathons have you run now?- I've done 16 so far.

0:34:21 > 0:34:23That's amazing, to do a full marathon.

0:34:23 > 0:34:26I'm really conscious of looking... dressed like this -

0:34:26 > 0:34:28I would never dream of it, normally.

0:34:28 > 0:34:30There was a stage where I wouldn't go outside.

0:34:30 > 0:34:33I'd drive down here in the car, I'd park the car up.

0:34:33 > 0:34:35I didn't want to be seen leaving the house in my running kit.

0:34:35 > 0:34:37Like yourself, I'm looking in the mirror,

0:34:37 > 0:34:39thinking things have got to change

0:34:39 > 0:34:41CHRIS: Yeah, but you've got to want it to change.

0:34:41 > 0:34:43Because I'm in so much pain with my knees,

0:34:43 > 0:34:47and if I can lose the weight, I'll be in less pain, you know.

0:34:47 > 0:34:50Tracy, you're standing over there all quiet. You got any questions?

0:34:50 > 0:34:52I'm just absorbing it all.

0:34:52 > 0:34:55I'm thinking that where Chris started off is where I am now,

0:34:55 > 0:35:00so I've got a bit of a goal and I can see that it is achievable.

0:35:00 > 0:35:03Right. There are letters all along the beach, this is where I started,

0:35:03 > 0:35:06let's see if we can get it through H to the steps.

0:35:06 > 0:35:09You can run, walk, but we'll give it our best shot, yeah?

0:35:09 > 0:35:11Spike...

0:35:11 > 0:35:15Couple of times standing there, you can feel yourself welling up,

0:35:15 > 0:35:19kind of, "Wow. It's real. It can be done."

0:35:19 > 0:35:20Are we walking, running?

0:35:22 > 0:35:26Where he was seven years ago is where I am now.

0:35:26 > 0:35:28And it's like, right, look at what he's done,

0:35:28 > 0:35:30look at how he's changed. I can do this.

0:35:30 > 0:35:34- Of course you can.- I just need to get my head back in the game a bit more.

0:35:36 > 0:35:39It appears that Tara may be succeeding at last.

0:35:43 > 0:35:45I also want to show you as well...

0:35:45 > 0:35:47- Where's that now? - That's in the dining room now.

0:35:47 > 0:35:52- OK.- In the corner. So just messing around, trying it out in my PJs.

0:35:52 > 0:35:54- It's up, it's working.- Amazing.

0:35:57 > 0:36:00This is a lovely pathway for a stroll.

0:36:02 > 0:36:05Tara has decided to give each person a goal...

0:36:05 > 0:36:06Jackie.

0:36:08 > 0:36:09Carole.

0:36:09 > 0:36:12..and has devised a series of individual challenges.

0:36:13 > 0:36:15Tell us what it is.

0:36:15 > 0:36:17Swim for a mile!

0:36:17 > 0:36:19Cycle five miles.

0:36:19 > 0:36:22Do I get a bike?

0:36:22 > 0:36:23Run 5K.

0:36:23 > 0:36:26Oh, my God.

0:36:28 > 0:36:32Run up 16 flights of stairs of the DVLA building.

0:36:32 > 0:36:35Eat a full cooked breakfast.

0:36:35 > 0:36:38I can't believe it. Thank you!

0:36:38 > 0:36:41Thank you. It's to complete a game of football.

0:36:41 > 0:36:44- Yes?- Yeah.

0:36:44 > 0:36:48Walk 10K.

0:36:48 > 0:36:49OK, cool.

0:36:49 > 0:36:51So they are your challenges.

0:36:51 > 0:36:58That is what you need to focus on, go, achieve it, set yourself up.

0:37:02 > 0:37:05Inspired by Tracy's newfound interest in her treadmill,

0:37:05 > 0:37:08Tara has dug out information about something that could

0:37:08 > 0:37:11transform the entire culture of the office workplace.

0:37:14 > 0:37:17She's contacted a company that are introducing some new ideas

0:37:17 > 0:37:18to British offices,

0:37:18 > 0:37:22ideas that could wipe out the inactive workplace at a stroke.

0:37:24 > 0:37:27Salesman Graham Stott has come to show the team

0:37:27 > 0:37:29what the machines are all about.

0:37:30 > 0:37:32Come on, nice and easy.

0:37:32 > 0:37:36To get the treadmill going, three, two, one,

0:37:36 > 0:37:40and the belt's going to start very, very slow. SHE LAUGHS

0:37:40 > 0:37:41Yeah. You can do that.

0:37:41 > 0:37:44That's about as slow as I walk, I think.

0:37:44 > 0:37:46- No problem.- No, I am joking.

0:37:46 > 0:37:49Right. They're called Workplace Solutions,

0:37:49 > 0:37:53so the idea is that it's just something to keep you active at work.

0:37:53 > 0:37:55I suppose, once you get used to it...

0:37:55 > 0:37:58One mile and hour, while you're in your working hours,

0:37:58 > 0:38:01you'll lose 57lbs of body weight in a year.

0:38:04 > 0:38:07I enjoyed it. It was really great.

0:38:07 > 0:38:11You were able to do things on the desk without thinking about walking.

0:38:11 > 0:38:13Have you been on the treadmill again, Tracy?

0:38:13 > 0:38:17- Yeah, I've got a treadmill in the house.- Right. Okey-dokey.

0:38:17 > 0:38:20Just get somewhere where you feel comfortable.

0:38:20 > 0:38:22Are you comfortable there?

0:38:22 > 0:38:23Yeah, that's quite comfy.

0:38:23 > 0:38:25Doing well there. Trace.

0:38:25 > 0:38:27This is so much fun. This rocks.

0:38:27 > 0:38:29Good.

0:38:29 > 0:38:31It made me giggle whilst I was doing it.

0:38:31 > 0:38:34Imagine being able to laugh at work, that's just awesome.

0:38:34 > 0:38:36I want one. I really, really want one.

0:38:36 > 0:38:39This is what is known as a cycle desk.

0:38:39 > 0:38:43It's very unusual, it's one of the first ones in the country,

0:38:43 > 0:38:48so you're the first guy to really have a go on this and try it out.

0:38:48 > 0:38:49Lovely.

0:38:49 > 0:38:54It's a very simple way of becoming healthier.

0:38:54 > 0:38:57Literally, all day, nice and comfortable,

0:38:57 > 0:38:58and just pedal at your own rate.

0:38:58 > 0:39:01Are you comfortable that it's nice and easy for you to do?

0:39:01 > 0:39:03- Yeah.- Fantastic.

0:39:03 > 0:39:05How much would a unit like this cost?

0:39:05 > 0:39:07That's what I was going to ask.

0:39:07 > 0:39:09This one, these are about £2,000.

0:39:11 > 0:39:14The Civil Service is government,

0:39:14 > 0:39:19and you could be talking close-on £100,000 to do the building.

0:39:19 > 0:39:21How would that be justified?

0:39:21 > 0:39:24Good morning, you're through to Robert at the DVLA.

0:39:24 > 0:39:26How may I help you today?

0:39:26 > 0:39:29OK. So how long has your doctor advised you not to drive for?

0:39:29 > 0:39:32Good morning, you're speaking to Ashleigh. How may I help you?

0:39:32 > 0:39:36Public sector costs are under pressure like never before.

0:39:37 > 0:39:39Tara needs to find cheaper solutions to the

0:39:39 > 0:39:41problem of inactivity in the DVLA.

0:39:43 > 0:39:46And the 16-storey building has an opportunity that's available

0:39:46 > 0:39:49to everyone for free.

0:39:49 > 0:39:52Guys, you know when your in work and moving around,

0:39:52 > 0:39:54how many of you take the lift?

0:39:54 > 0:39:56- I used to.- All the time?

0:39:56 > 0:39:58- I'm on floor 13.- Trace?

0:39:58 > 0:40:00What floor are you on?

0:40:00 > 0:40:03- One.- Oh, my gosh, you've got no excuses.

0:40:03 > 0:40:08I need a pledge from you that you will never get in the lift.

0:40:08 > 0:40:11So, let's move from now on, definitely. Cool.

0:40:11 > 0:40:13I'll follow you up the stairs.

0:40:13 > 0:40:14Yes. Yeah. What about you, guys?

0:40:14 > 0:40:17- Ground floor.- Do you think you could incorporate a little bit more movement?

0:40:17 > 0:40:20- You'd say I could park as far away as I can.- Yes. Correct.

0:40:20 > 0:40:24- What I'm going to do instead is I'm going to walk at lunchtime.- Amazing.

0:40:24 > 0:40:25Good. Good.

0:40:25 > 0:40:26So that's going to be the best...

0:40:26 > 0:40:29These guys do have steps to add in as activity.

0:40:29 > 0:40:31You know, it's those little things...

0:40:31 > 0:40:34At lunchtime, not sitting down reading a book,

0:40:34 > 0:40:36save that for winding down in the evening.

0:40:36 > 0:40:38On that note, shall we take the stairs?

0:40:38 > 0:40:40To where? Heaven? THEY LAUGH

0:40:40 > 0:40:42All 16 floors?

0:40:42 > 0:40:44- All 16 floors.- Let's do this.

0:40:44 > 0:40:46Come on, then.

0:40:51 > 0:40:52THEY CHATTER

0:40:55 > 0:40:58Climbing the stairs may be a shock to the system, but three weeks into

0:40:58 > 0:41:04the programme, Tara has a bigger shock that no-one is expecting.

0:41:04 > 0:41:06Hello!

0:41:09 > 0:41:12Come on, Jackie, up on your feet.

0:41:12 > 0:41:15What I want to say to you, first of all is,

0:41:15 > 0:41:17I am so proud of where you've got so far.

0:41:17 > 0:41:20You were doing amazing with your nutrition

0:41:20 > 0:41:22and your support to each other and everything.

0:41:22 > 0:41:25There is going to be a point where you guys are going to go back

0:41:25 > 0:41:29to the real world, go back to work, and I'm not going to be with you.

0:41:29 > 0:41:33So from this point now, I'm out.

0:41:33 > 0:41:34No.

0:41:34 > 0:41:37I'm going, so I'm going to say to you, goodbye.

0:41:37 > 0:41:41Stick with everything that I've taught you. See ya!

0:41:41 > 0:41:44- Thank you.- Oh, no.

0:41:46 > 0:41:49You're not going to have her for the rest of your life, so...

0:41:49 > 0:41:52- I thought she was going to be with us for another week, like.- No, no, no.

0:41:52 > 0:41:56But that was just, like, final.

0:41:56 > 0:41:57Come here.

0:41:57 > 0:42:01I'm never usually emotional, am I? My mascara's running now.

0:42:04 > 0:42:05- You all right, babes?- Mm-hm.

0:42:05 > 0:42:07Shock to the system.

0:42:09 > 0:42:13Oh, my goodness. That was really harsh, that was,

0:42:13 > 0:42:16and I'm shaking a little bit from leaving them.

0:42:19 > 0:42:22Felt like a load of children being left at school

0:42:22 > 0:42:23and the teacher's gone.

0:42:23 > 0:42:26And you're like, "Oh, my God, we're left here on our own."

0:42:26 > 0:42:27We just wanted to cry.

0:42:27 > 0:42:29I looked around and I wasn't the only one crying,

0:42:29 > 0:42:31and it was just really emotional.

0:42:33 > 0:42:36We honestly thought she was joking just to see our reaction,

0:42:36 > 0:42:40and when she said, "I'm seriously going. Bye."

0:42:40 > 0:42:43And she walked out the room, we were all in shock.

0:42:43 > 0:42:45Like, is this serious?

0:42:47 > 0:42:49What the hell? You can't do that.

0:42:49 > 0:42:53You've just come in and changed out lives completely

0:42:53 > 0:42:56and you're not giving us a chance to say goodbye.

0:42:56 > 0:42:59And I was really annoyed and upset.

0:42:59 > 0:43:02I just wanted to punch somebody.

0:43:02 > 0:43:04Just like, you can't do that, it's wrong.

0:43:04 > 0:43:07It was wrong on so many different levels.

0:43:08 > 0:43:10There is a reason why I've done this.

0:43:10 > 0:43:15This is a test for them now, and will they pass or will they fail?

0:43:15 > 0:43:18Um...they will be on their own one day

0:43:18 > 0:43:21and they're going to have to use everything that I've taught them

0:43:21 > 0:43:23to take on into life,

0:43:23 > 0:43:27and if the can't cope a couple of days without me, then this is

0:43:27 > 0:43:31where they will see that one day they are going to be on their own.

0:43:31 > 0:43:35We've all become close fiends, so you miss her as you miss a friend.

0:43:35 > 0:43:39But, you know, she can't be your crutch. She can't be there all the time,

0:43:39 > 0:43:41so we've got to stand on our own two feet.

0:43:43 > 0:43:46Tara is so concerned about all she's discovered about inactive

0:43:46 > 0:43:51working that she no longer wants to keep it to the team of six.

0:43:51 > 0:43:54Yeah, that's cool with me. Fine, no problem.

0:43:54 > 0:43:57Tara now wants institutional change

0:43:57 > 0:44:00and needs to be noticed by everyone in the building.

0:44:00 > 0:44:03And is starting by taking to the corridors.

0:44:03 > 0:44:07She just needs to be certain that her ideas will survive,

0:44:07 > 0:44:11even when she's no longer around to keep things on track.

0:44:12 > 0:44:17After four days away, it's time to return to her team.

0:44:17 > 0:44:19They're already exercising without me.

0:44:21 > 0:44:23Hello!

0:44:23 > 0:44:26THEY CHEER

0:44:26 > 0:44:28How are you all?

0:44:28 > 0:44:30Better now to see you.

0:44:30 > 0:44:33I dumped you. How were you feeling after that?

0:44:33 > 0:44:36It was really emotional, and I just kept crying all the time.

0:44:36 > 0:44:38I didn't know what I was crying about.

0:44:38 > 0:44:42But then, by Friday, I kind of, "You know what? This is good.

0:44:42 > 0:44:47"It's not what I wanted, it's too soon, but I need to take it on

0:44:47 > 0:44:51"myself at some point, I'm not always going to have the Tara safety net.

0:44:51 > 0:44:53"So, suck it up and let's get on with it."

0:44:53 > 0:44:55Good. Good.

0:44:55 > 0:44:57And, you boys, what about you?

0:44:57 > 0:45:00I still did the exercise, but you can always try and put it off.

0:45:00 > 0:45:02With here, it's like we've got to do it now.

0:45:02 > 0:45:05But at home, it's like, I'll do it in a bit.

0:45:05 > 0:45:09I went for a run, about a mile, a mile and a half.

0:45:09 > 0:45:11It is emotional, though. We've gone on an incredible journey,

0:45:11 > 0:45:13all of us, and we've bonded well.

0:45:13 > 0:45:17But this is how we prep you up, cos I am not going to be here one day.

0:45:17 > 0:45:21You sometimes get these situations in life that you're not expecting

0:45:21 > 0:45:23and how you pull yourself back up from them.

0:45:23 > 0:45:26Otherwise, you can use it as a spiral of going down.

0:45:26 > 0:45:29Next time, give us a chance to say goodbye.

0:45:30 > 0:45:32Cos I will hunt you down.

0:45:35 > 0:45:36It's time for Tara to see

0:45:36 > 0:45:40if her message is reaching the 5,000 people in the DVLA.

0:45:41 > 0:45:44Tara has booked a large open-plan area

0:45:44 > 0:45:48and invited the entire workforce to a special lunchtime workout.

0:45:49 > 0:45:52A message has gone out to everybody, inviting them to come along

0:45:52 > 0:45:54and have a session with me.

0:45:54 > 0:45:56But I don't know how this is going to go.

0:45:56 > 0:45:59I'm going to try to get them all doing a bit of exercise

0:45:59 > 0:46:01and take that back to the masses.

0:46:01 > 0:46:04But...fingers crossed, who knows?

0:46:08 > 0:46:10To try to ensure a good turnout,

0:46:10 > 0:46:13Tara attempts to round up a crowd herself.

0:46:13 > 0:46:15Hi, you coming down to join in?

0:46:15 > 0:46:18Yeah, you are. Come on.

0:46:18 > 0:46:21Get down there and I'm going to be dragging whoever else is left.

0:46:21 > 0:46:24Join in. Spectating is not allowed.

0:46:24 > 0:46:27Come on, join in. Sorry. I'm not sorry at all. Get down there.

0:46:27 > 0:46:29You going got come and join in, guys?

0:46:29 > 0:46:32Ah, there we go. Come on, guys.

0:46:32 > 0:46:34Getting fit in 15 minutes.

0:46:36 > 0:46:40But with only one person out of 5,000 press-ganged into joining

0:46:40 > 0:46:45the usual team, Tara has to begin a rather lonely public session.

0:46:45 > 0:46:46This is easy,

0:46:46 > 0:46:50you could do it at your desk just to get the circulation going.

0:46:51 > 0:46:55While people are prepared to look on from afar, this isn't the way

0:46:55 > 0:46:58to get people from this office involved in exercise.

0:46:58 > 0:47:01I mean, it says it all today - where are everybody?

0:47:01 > 0:47:05We've got up to 5,000 people that we could be getting moving

0:47:05 > 0:47:08- a little bit more.- It's a little bit dismal, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:47:12 > 0:47:14It's Tara's first real failure,

0:47:14 > 0:47:18and she realises that getting notice in the DVLA is going to take

0:47:18 > 0:47:21a lot more than a few posters in the corridors.

0:47:26 > 0:47:29Over the next few days, Tara works on a truly big idea,

0:47:29 > 0:47:34requiring thought, meticulous planning and complete secrecy.

0:47:38 > 0:47:41If it works, she believes it will benefit her team,

0:47:41 > 0:47:42and more importantly,

0:47:42 > 0:47:46finally get the entire workforce to sit up and take notice.

0:47:49 > 0:47:54Today, I am definitely going to make sure that they know I've arrived.

0:47:57 > 0:47:59OK, guys, we are in position.

0:47:59 > 0:48:01Let's go.

0:48:06 > 0:48:08Wah-hey!

0:48:08 > 0:48:10They're coming.

0:48:10 > 0:48:11Oh, my God...

0:48:11 > 0:48:13I'm cringing looking at them.

0:48:15 > 0:48:16I'm not doing that.

0:48:16 > 0:48:17Oh, man.

0:48:17 > 0:48:18This is going to be fun.

0:48:18 > 0:48:22Whatever else happens, it's going to be fun.

0:48:23 > 0:48:26Oh, my God...!

0:48:26 > 0:48:28Oh, my God, look!

0:48:28 > 0:48:30I don't feel like dying today.

0:48:31 > 0:48:32And right from the off,

0:48:32 > 0:48:36everyone in the building is coming to see what's going on.

0:48:39 > 0:48:43Today is going to be all about you guys taking that leap.

0:48:43 > 0:48:47Saying goodbye to that person in the past and you are going to be

0:48:47 > 0:48:52taking that leap into this positive, active life, OK?

0:48:53 > 0:48:56The British Army abseiling instructors have taken the six

0:48:56 > 0:48:58to the roof of one of the DVLA's buildings,

0:48:58 > 0:49:03but there are mixed views about taking Tara's leap of faith.

0:49:03 > 0:49:06Never know, you might go over the edge and have an epiphany.

0:49:06 > 0:49:07What's an epiphany?

0:49:09 > 0:49:11I hate heights, always have.

0:49:11 > 0:49:14From a young age, I've had a fear of heights.

0:49:14 > 0:49:16Just looking over there...

0:49:18 > 0:49:19Scary.

0:49:22 > 0:49:24Carole is the first to step off the edge.

0:49:28 > 0:49:30I'm scared!

0:49:30 > 0:49:35INSTRUCTOR: Keep holding on. It's all right.

0:49:35 > 0:49:36There you go

0:49:38 > 0:49:42SHOUTS OF ENCOURAGEMENT Lean back so you're sitting in the harness.

0:49:42 > 0:49:48That's it. You're good, that's amazing. Well done.

0:49:48 > 0:49:52Don't look down, Carole.

0:49:52 > 0:49:56CHEERING

0:49:58 > 0:49:59Amazing!

0:49:59 > 0:50:01You did it!

0:50:01 > 0:50:02Big hugs!

0:50:02 > 0:50:04I'm scared now.

0:50:04 > 0:50:07Oh! Those guys as amazing.

0:50:09 > 0:50:11That's was amazing.

0:50:11 > 0:50:12Well done.

0:50:12 > 0:50:15You done amazing. I'm so proud of you.

0:50:15 > 0:50:16That was awesome.

0:50:19 > 0:50:22And as each of the team takes the leap of faith,

0:50:22 > 0:50:26Tara's stunt to get herself noticed appears to be working.

0:50:29 > 0:50:31And the floor!

0:50:31 > 0:50:34CHEERING

0:50:36 > 0:50:37Well done, Tracy.

0:50:37 > 0:50:40I'm so proud of you. That was amazing.

0:50:40 > 0:50:42This is really exciting.

0:50:42 > 0:50:44The building could almost be tilting

0:50:44 > 0:50:46with the amount of people at the windows looking out.

0:50:46 > 0:50:47So people know that we're here,

0:50:47 > 0:50:50they're starting to take notice, and, yeah, this is fab.

0:51:00 > 0:51:04INSTRUCTOR: Feet shoulder-width apart, give you a bit of stability.

0:51:14 > 0:51:17That's it. Keep your legs straight.

0:51:17 > 0:51:19SCREAMING

0:51:19 > 0:51:24All right, Ash, good lad. That's it. As you are, mate, I've got you.

0:51:24 > 0:51:25He's OK now.

0:51:25 > 0:51:29Keep your feet flat on the wall.

0:51:29 > 0:51:34I'm going to say I'm doing it and then hope I can do it.

0:51:34 > 0:51:35Does that make sense?

0:51:40 > 0:51:42And he's down!

0:51:43 > 0:51:45Yay! Amazing.

0:51:49 > 0:51:52To me, it's like jumping out of a plane.

0:51:52 > 0:51:56Who'd want to jump out of a perfectly good plane? Not me.

0:51:56 > 0:51:59- Hook onto me.- No! No!

0:51:59 > 0:52:00Jackie, I've got you.

0:52:00 > 0:52:04I was holding on so tight, that it was physically hurting.

0:52:04 > 0:52:08- Jackie, I've got you. - We've got you on this rope. OK?

0:52:08 > 0:52:10Oh, come on, sweetie.

0:52:12 > 0:52:14Come on, sweetness, you can do it.

0:52:14 > 0:52:17- TARA:- Well done, Jackie, you're doing incredible.

0:52:17 > 0:52:18- MAN:- You're doing really well.

0:52:20 > 0:52:21- TARA:- Feel the floor soon.

0:52:21 > 0:52:22That's good.

0:52:22 > 0:52:25You've done it. Well done.

0:52:25 > 0:52:28- Amazing!- I did it!

0:52:29 > 0:52:31You're done! Your done!

0:52:31 > 0:52:33It's relief!

0:52:36 > 0:52:39And suddenly Tara finds that she's in demand,

0:52:39 > 0:52:42with people wanting to hear her ideas.

0:52:42 > 0:52:46Do you think that if something was introduced where a team leader,

0:52:46 > 0:52:51every hour, would get everybody up of one minute doing something...?

0:52:51 > 0:52:53It would be fun. I'd join in that.

0:52:53 > 0:52:58You would join in? You guys are doing good. I am going to the top.

0:52:58 > 0:53:00Hi, everyone.

0:53:00 > 0:53:03What I was wanting to get from you today,

0:53:03 > 0:53:09if a system was put in place where team managers or leaders,

0:53:09 > 0:53:12at various points throughout the day, got their teams up to do

0:53:12 > 0:53:16some very simple bodyweight movement for just one minute.

0:53:16 > 0:53:17How would this work,

0:53:17 > 0:53:21cos presumably the team leaders would need to be trained?

0:53:21 > 0:53:25I would be more than happy to have a complete system that could be

0:53:25 > 0:53:29implemented down to all the teams, to ensure everybody knows why

0:53:29 > 0:53:31and how to do it, then.

0:53:33 > 0:53:34Excellent.

0:53:34 > 0:53:37Tightening through your trunk so it helps you flatten.

0:53:37 > 0:53:40These muscles are having to tense to keep you there.

0:53:44 > 0:53:48And exercise fever is spreading throughout the building.

0:53:48 > 0:53:51And breath. You're allowed to enjoy it.

0:53:52 > 0:53:54Legs will ache tomorrow.

0:53:54 > 0:53:57As the experiment draws to and end,

0:53:57 > 0:53:59Tara takes the team for a final check-up.

0:54:01 > 0:54:02101.9.

0:54:02 > 0:54:0440% loss!

0:54:05 > 0:54:06Are you serious?!

0:54:08 > 0:54:11Not bad for a disabled person, eh?

0:54:11 > 0:54:13As soon as I saw them today, I realised there was

0:54:13 > 0:54:16an enormous difference in them, cos their body shapes had changed.

0:54:16 > 0:54:18Their demeanour had changed.

0:54:18 > 0:54:21The way they stood had changed. The confidence had changed.

0:54:21 > 0:54:24All of which has increased markedly.

0:54:24 > 0:54:25I must admit,

0:54:25 > 0:54:29I'm a little bit amazed at what has happened to them.

0:54:29 > 0:54:30Well done!

0:54:30 > 0:54:32Which only leaves one task for Tara.

0:54:32 > 0:54:37You cannot still have that in your car after you've been

0:54:37 > 0:54:43white-water rafting and claiming that, so you can park nearer to...

0:54:43 > 0:54:47It goes against everything that we've just been doing.

0:54:47 > 0:54:50So, my hands are out, they're ready for it.

0:54:50 > 0:54:52Give.

0:54:52 > 0:54:54SHE GROANS

0:54:55 > 0:54:56Kiss it goodbye.

0:54:58 > 0:55:03Oh, no! No, no, no. No, no!

0:55:05 > 0:55:06Bye!

0:55:08 > 0:55:10I don't need it any more.

0:55:10 > 0:55:11I know...

0:55:11 > 0:55:13You might have to move the car now.

0:55:14 > 0:55:17Do you want to move it into another space?

0:55:20 > 0:55:23Carole, today, come on.

0:55:23 > 0:55:25THEY CHEER

0:55:29 > 0:55:31At the end of the four-week experiment,

0:55:31 > 0:55:34Tara's team had to complete their challenges.

0:55:35 > 0:55:39Tracy set out on her 10K walk around the DVLA.

0:55:39 > 0:55:43There are nine laps to go. Well done.

0:55:43 > 0:55:46Keep going, you're looking good.

0:55:46 > 0:55:48Hello. I can do it. I can do it.

0:55:48 > 0:55:51I can do a lot more than I think I can.

0:55:51 > 0:55:55And that's something that this has definitely taught me.

0:55:57 > 0:56:01Ashleigh completed his first game of football since losing his mum.

0:56:06 > 0:56:09Jackie completed her mile swim with support from her son.

0:56:13 > 0:56:15Good job.

0:56:17 > 0:56:19Carole, having given up her disabled badge,

0:56:19 > 0:56:23bought a bike and completed her first five miles with her daughter.

0:56:23 > 0:56:26There's no way I'm going to go back to the way I was.

0:56:26 > 0:56:28I feel great at the moment.

0:56:28 > 0:56:31I've still got a long way to go, so can only get better.

0:56:31 > 0:56:35WOMAN: Tracy, you're doing fab!

0:56:41 > 0:56:44Kirsty ran her 5K race with help from her little boy.

0:56:44 > 0:56:46You going to go faster?

0:56:46 > 0:56:48WOMAN CHEERS

0:56:50 > 0:56:54And Rob ran all 16 floors of the DVLA, to be met by Alex,

0:56:54 > 0:56:58his daughter, the reason he got involved in the first place.

0:56:58 > 0:56:59It's not just about me.

0:56:59 > 0:57:03It's always been about my daughter and my family and possible family growing.

0:57:03 > 0:57:06Therefore I want to be around for her, for my wife,

0:57:06 > 0:57:09and set a good example, so I can lead from the front.

0:57:10 > 0:57:15# Keep running up that road Keep running up that hill... #

0:57:15 > 0:57:18The team have made changes and they're passing those changes on.

0:57:20 > 0:57:23But they aren't just passing them on to children...

0:57:27 > 0:57:30This is really exciting to see all these people coming down.

0:57:30 > 0:57:32This is such a buzz.

0:57:32 > 0:57:35I'm so pleased. Thank you so much for coming.
