0:00:03 > 0:00:04- Thank you.- You're welcome, sir.

0:00:07 > 0:00:08Roger Laughton is 46.

0:00:09 > 0:00:13OK, let's go through. Would you like to take a seat just on

0:00:13 > 0:00:16- the blue chair over there, please. - Thank you very much.

0:00:16 > 0:00:18He weighs 31 stone.

0:00:21 > 0:00:22I've never weighed myself,

0:00:22 > 0:00:25but I always knew I was getting bigger, because of my clothes.

0:00:25 > 0:00:29OK, if you could you step up on the scales.

0:00:29 > 0:00:30'It was just a big shock, you know.'

0:00:30 > 0:00:33My jaw, sort of, hit the floor, like, you know?

0:00:33 > 0:00:37Like one in four UK adults, Roger's obese.

0:00:38 > 0:00:42Initially, if you could lie flat for me on the bed, please? OK.

0:00:42 > 0:00:44And it's pushing his health to the edge.

0:00:44 > 0:00:48It's extremely dangerous. He could be seriously ill.

0:00:48 > 0:00:51He's basically lucky to be alive, as he is, now.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56'It is very scary.

0:00:56 > 0:01:00'It does put you into a bit of a shock.'

0:01:03 > 0:01:07'They said "you need to lose weight drastically," so...'

0:01:08 > 0:01:10That's what I've started to do.

0:01:11 > 0:01:12Good, good, good.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15Roger needs to lose nearly half his body weight.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23- Taxi for Donna?- Yeah. - And he's not going it alone.

0:01:23 > 0:01:27His fellow drivers at the local taxi firm are all overweight, too,

0:01:27 > 0:01:29like Mike.

0:01:33 > 0:01:38- Push, push, push, push!- So, they're going on a drive to fitness.

0:01:38 > 0:01:40Let's go, let's go, let's go!

0:01:40 > 0:01:44Can they turn around a lifetime of bad diet and little exercise

0:01:44 > 0:01:48and go from fat cabbies to fit cabbies?

0:02:02 > 0:02:06Hello? Where are you going? All right, see you soon.

0:02:06 > 0:02:08At the firm where Roger works,

0:02:08 > 0:02:12it seems being fat is an occupational hazard.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17'Being a taxi driver, you're sat down in 11 hours of the shift.'

0:02:19 > 0:02:20And you do put on weight. You do.

0:02:23 > 0:02:25'Getting in and out of the car was exercise enough.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28'Nine times out of ten, I have a chocolate bar, packet of crisps,'

0:02:28 > 0:02:30bottle of Coke. All bad for you. All extra sugar.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33But temptation's always there. And why does it taste so good?

0:02:33 > 0:02:35You know?

0:02:35 > 0:02:37Got your currant bun now, ain't you?

0:02:38 > 0:02:41Boss Liam Sheerin used to be massive.

0:02:43 > 0:02:44See you later!

0:02:44 > 0:02:49There is couple of pictures of me from last year, in Benidorm,

0:02:49 > 0:02:52before my lifestyle changed to what it's changed now.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55Liam's lost almost 10 stone.

0:02:55 > 0:02:57Push, push, push, push!

0:02:57 > 0:02:59Keep going, keep going.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03- And that's inspired Roger to get a grip.- OK.

0:03:03 > 0:03:04With his fellow cabbies,

0:03:04 > 0:03:09he's joined a weight-loss group run by a community health team.

0:03:09 > 0:03:11This is torture!

0:03:11 > 0:03:15It's not just the obvious flab that needs to go.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19- Nice, nice!- Trainer Gavin wants to zap their internal,

0:03:19 > 0:03:21or visceral fat, too.

0:03:22 > 0:03:26Visceral fat is the dangerous fat around your organs.

0:03:26 > 0:03:27Essentially, statistically,

0:03:27 > 0:03:31people who have high visceral fat are far more likely to get various

0:03:31 > 0:03:34diseases, such as chronic heart disease.

0:03:34 > 0:03:36So this is a key indicator that we look for.

0:03:36 > 0:03:39DANCE MUSIC PLAYS

0:03:39 > 0:03:44Visceral fat can also cause strokes, diabetes, and cancer.

0:03:45 > 0:03:48Roger's is almost off the scale.

0:03:51 > 0:03:52When I first saw Roger step on,

0:03:52 > 0:03:54I thought it actually broke the machine,

0:03:54 > 0:03:58because his visceral fat was 50. Anything above 13,

0:03:58 > 0:04:02it starts to class as high. So, 50, you know,

0:04:02 > 0:04:04it's extremely dangerous.

0:04:04 > 0:04:06So our aim is to bring that visceral fat down

0:04:06 > 0:04:09and gradually improve his health.

0:04:13 > 0:04:15Cabbie Mike is 30.

0:04:15 > 0:04:17At 20 stone, he's dangerously obese.

0:04:17 > 0:04:19So, he's on a diet.

0:04:22 > 0:04:25I'm actually making stir-fry with a bit of piri piri seasoning.

0:04:25 > 0:04:28- A bit of couscous. - Couscous!- Couscous.

0:04:28 > 0:04:31The food that's so good, they named it twice.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34Mike started piling on the pounds as a child.

0:04:34 > 0:04:37At five, he had to wear a hearing aid.

0:04:37 > 0:04:39That's when the teasing started.

0:04:41 > 0:04:44I went from being just a normal kid, if you like,

0:04:44 > 0:04:48to what I felt like an outsider. Just like that.

0:04:50 > 0:04:51And...

0:04:58 > 0:05:03..I still remember the bullying and the torment that I suffered.

0:05:03 > 0:05:08The name-calling. The jibes. Made me want to comfort eat.

0:05:09 > 0:05:12And then, because obviously I was comfort eating,

0:05:12 > 0:05:13I was putting on more weight.

0:05:13 > 0:05:16And then, because I was putting on more weight,

0:05:16 > 0:05:18they then found something else to...

0:05:20 > 0:05:21..to bully me for.

0:05:22 > 0:05:27It's early days, but girlfriend Georgina thinks the diet's working.

0:05:27 > 0:05:30Does it look like I do bullshit?!

0:05:33 > 0:05:37I've seen a definite, like, change from him,

0:05:37 > 0:05:41where he is not as tired.

0:05:43 > 0:05:45When he... Because obviously, he does shift work,

0:05:45 > 0:05:48but he's not as tired.

0:05:48 > 0:05:51And he's much more happier in himself.

0:05:53 > 0:05:55And he tells me that every day!

0:05:57 > 0:06:00Mike's got a big incentive to lose weight.

0:06:00 > 0:06:02He's going to be a dad.

0:06:03 > 0:06:06- Not long.- Not long, at all.

0:06:07 > 0:06:09It could happen any day now, really.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12- It could happen within the next ten minutes.- I bloody hope not!

0:06:21 > 0:06:23That's very nice.

0:06:23 > 0:06:25A bit hot.

0:06:25 > 0:06:26Never trust a thinker!

0:06:31 > 0:06:34From here, that's it. Push. Nice.

0:06:34 > 0:06:35And again.

0:06:35 > 0:06:38Drive, drive, drop, good, good!

0:06:38 > 0:06:41Roger needs to lose a whopping 15 stone,

0:06:41 > 0:06:44so he's training five days a week.

0:06:46 > 0:06:50Try a bit back. No, go on, then. Go under. All yours. Good.

0:06:50 > 0:06:54'Rustic training, this is. It's not like going into a gym,

0:06:54 > 0:06:56'running on a treadmill or cycling a bike.

0:06:56 > 0:06:58'It's, you know, it's intense.'

0:06:58 > 0:07:00Well done, well done.

0:07:02 > 0:07:03'It is punishment'

0:07:03 > 0:07:07for all my life, that I've ruined my body!

0:07:07 > 0:07:11Three, two, one. Let's go. Good.

0:07:11 > 0:07:14For Roger, having Gavin pushing him on is vital.

0:07:14 > 0:07:16Well done.

0:07:16 > 0:07:17Good, good, good, good.

0:07:18 > 0:07:22I'll be just another person, sat at home or working.

0:07:22 > 0:07:24You know, not exercising.

0:07:24 > 0:07:30Eat what you want and carry on, as life is going, until it ends.

0:07:31 > 0:07:32Three...

0:07:32 > 0:07:34two...one.

0:07:36 > 0:07:37Good.

0:07:39 > 0:07:42MUSIC: "Taxi" TV theme

0:07:44 > 0:07:47Roger works nights.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50Shift work is linked to obesity, although it's not clear exactly why.

0:07:52 > 0:07:57But for Roger, a pit stop at the burger van had become routine.

0:08:04 > 0:08:05- Evening, Sean.- Evening, Rog.

0:08:05 > 0:08:09- All right? - He's learning to resist temptation.

0:08:09 > 0:08:11A bottle of water, please.

0:08:14 > 0:08:16- Cheers, buddy. - Cheers, man.- Thanks a lot.

0:08:17 > 0:08:21Normally, I would have had a burger or something or a hot dog.

0:08:21 > 0:08:22- But I don't touch it no more.- No?

0:08:22 > 0:08:26I just stand here and yak with them, now and again.

0:08:26 > 0:08:29You ought to be really proud of yourself, mate, cos it's not easy.

0:08:29 > 0:08:31- No.- Try working here, I tell you!

0:08:40 > 0:08:45Eight weeks in and, for the cabbies, it's the first weigh-in.

0:08:57 > 0:09:02Your fat mass went from 31.45 to 27.65.

0:09:02 > 0:09:04- Can have a burger now, mate!- No!

0:09:09 > 0:09:11OK, Mike, if you'd like to step on, please.

0:09:17 > 0:09:21Straight away, that's over a three kilo loss.

0:09:21 > 0:09:23Take the handles, put them down by your sides.

0:09:23 > 0:09:26Your metabolic rate has increased, which is fantastic.

0:09:26 > 0:09:29I'll admit now, there's times I wanted to kill you...

0:09:29 > 0:09:31But it's been worth it, cos there's brilliant scores.

0:09:32 > 0:09:34- Well done.- Brilliant.

0:09:35 > 0:09:36Next up, it's Roger.

0:09:38 > 0:09:42That is 19 kilos of weight loss.

0:09:42 > 0:09:46So that is, essentially, 2.973 stone.

0:09:46 > 0:09:48ROGER LOUDLY EXHALES

0:09:50 > 0:09:53- That's mad. - Yeah. It's working.

0:09:58 > 0:10:00Well done, mate.

0:10:01 > 0:10:04Thank you. Thanks, mate.

0:10:04 > 0:10:05Three stone.

0:10:05 > 0:10:07THEY APPLAUD

0:10:10 > 0:10:13For most of the cabbies, this is where the programme ends...

0:10:13 > 0:10:17Fantastic, guys. Really, really happy with...

0:10:21 > 0:10:23..but Roger wants to keep going...

0:10:25 > 0:10:28- Big cheer. - ALL:- Hooray!

0:10:28 > 0:10:31..using Gavin as his personal trainer.

0:10:33 > 0:10:36I reckon I could do another two stone in another six weeks,

0:10:36 > 0:10:40hopefully. Keep working at it every day like I have been.

0:10:40 > 0:10:42Yeah. I want to get there.

0:10:42 > 0:10:45I think I'm going to reach my goal, I hope.

0:10:54 > 0:10:58But then, for Roger, there is a serious blow.

0:11:00 > 0:11:03He thought he had a chest infection,

0:11:03 > 0:11:07but a check-up revealed something much worse.

0:11:09 > 0:11:13I had my ECG and they found an arrhythmia problem.

0:11:14 > 0:11:19With, also, the onset of heart failure.

0:11:19 > 0:11:24So I've got to see a consultant and I've also got to stop driving.

0:11:24 > 0:11:27So... Cos it's that bad.

0:11:29 > 0:11:32Arrhythmia is an irregular heartbeat.

0:11:35 > 0:11:38Roger can't work while he waits for more tests

0:11:38 > 0:11:41and his size is causing delays in itself.

0:11:43 > 0:11:47They cancelled my heart exam again,

0:11:47 > 0:11:50because they are saying that the bed in the Cumberland Centre

0:11:50 > 0:11:53won't hold my weight.

0:11:56 > 0:12:00I lost seven stone and they are still saying I'm too big, like,

0:12:00 > 0:12:01you know?

0:12:09 > 0:12:12I've been feeling a bit down in the last couple of weeks.

0:12:14 > 0:12:16I've not been able to work, at all.

0:12:16 > 0:12:18No work, no money.

0:12:18 > 0:12:22You know, sometimes I just stand and look out the window

0:12:22 > 0:12:23for hours on end!

0:12:25 > 0:12:27Because...oh, it's frustrating.

0:12:33 > 0:12:36But he's not giving up and nor is Gavin.

0:12:38 > 0:12:41We can still do resistance...

0:12:41 > 0:12:45Although even a short walk leaves Roger struggling.

0:12:45 > 0:12:47Yeah.

0:12:47 > 0:12:48COUGHING

0:12:48 > 0:12:49Excuse me.

0:12:50 > 0:12:54You just feel half a man, sometimes, especially when you don't work.

0:12:54 > 0:12:58- And I've worked all my life. - So, essentially, just keep positive,

0:12:58 > 0:12:59doing the right things.

0:12:59 > 0:13:01- That's right, yeah.- Tablets, water tablets will kick in

0:13:01 > 0:13:04- and weight loss will be more visual.- Yeah.

0:13:04 > 0:13:06And just see this as part of your journey.

0:13:06 > 0:13:08Start walking back.

0:13:11 > 0:13:14Gavin's not giving up on him,

0:13:14 > 0:13:20but all Roger can do now is sit tight and wait for a diagnosis.

0:13:20 > 0:13:24ROGER COUGHS REPEATEDLY

0:13:24 > 0:13:26Come on, push, push, push! Keep going!

0:13:26 > 0:13:30Whilst Roger's at a standstill, Mike's going from strength...

0:13:31 > 0:13:33..to strength.

0:13:34 > 0:13:35That's fantastic.

0:13:35 > 0:13:36Brilliant, mate.

0:13:36 > 0:13:38Good, good, keep going.

0:13:40 > 0:13:41Excellent.

0:13:41 > 0:13:44MUSIC: Work That Body by Diana Ross

0:13:51 > 0:13:53Come on, let's go.

0:13:54 > 0:13:56He's carried on training with Gavin

0:13:56 > 0:13:59and even taken to the dreaded burpees.

0:13:59 > 0:14:00Come on, big finish, big finish.

0:14:00 > 0:14:03- Well, almost.- Well done.

0:14:05 > 0:14:07How do you feel about burpees?

0:14:07 > 0:14:08I hate them.

0:14:08 > 0:14:09I hate them.

0:14:09 > 0:14:12Two words - hate...them.

0:14:12 > 0:14:14Three, two, one...

0:14:14 > 0:14:17Sprint, sprint, sprint!

0:14:17 > 0:14:18Go, go, go!

0:14:21 > 0:14:25I'll be honest with you, I came that close to saying I just can't do it.

0:14:25 > 0:14:28- I came that close. - Full speed, full speed, full speed.

0:14:28 > 0:14:31I don't care if it's got to take me until next year to do this, either.

0:14:33 > 0:14:36- I'll get there. - Well done. Excellent.

0:14:36 > 0:14:37You did well.

0:14:40 > 0:14:42Gavin thinks Mike needs a confidence boost.

0:14:42 > 0:14:47So, he's set him a challenge, at the local sports centre.

0:14:50 > 0:14:52- Tickle! - And guess who has come along?

0:14:52 > 0:14:54Mike is now a dad, to Henry.

0:14:57 > 0:14:58It's a long way up.

0:14:58 > 0:15:01It's all right, I'll come down eventually.

0:15:01 > 0:15:03Don't worry. I will. Daddy is not going to go anywhere.

0:15:03 > 0:15:05Daddy is not going to stay up there.

0:15:07 > 0:15:09Only one problem...

0:15:09 > 0:15:11Mike's terrified of heights.

0:15:12 > 0:15:15'The big thing for Mike is his confidence.'

0:15:15 > 0:15:18When he is confident, he is, you know, incredible.

0:15:18 > 0:15:22'Hopefully, the results today will show him that he is going

0:15:22 > 0:15:23'in the right direction.'

0:15:26 > 0:15:29- You ready, Mike?- No. No!

0:15:31 > 0:15:33- Cool.- Here we go.

0:15:36 > 0:15:41- Right up high!- Hey!- Oh, God. One foot on, that's it. The other foot.

0:15:45 > 0:15:48- Nearly there!- Well done!

0:15:48 > 0:15:49APPLAUSE

0:15:51 > 0:15:53It's all right, I ain't going to fall.

0:15:53 > 0:15:58Small steps, small step. Relax, relax. Hold this.

0:15:58 > 0:15:59Hold this. Good. good.

0:16:26 > 0:16:28Brilliant. You did well.

0:16:31 > 0:16:34He's exhausted, but the toughest part is still to come -

0:16:34 > 0:16:36a ten-metre wall climb.

0:16:38 > 0:16:41Imagine how great it is going to feel when you have got to the top.

0:16:41 > 0:16:42God help me.

0:16:44 > 0:16:48- Ready, mate? Yeah?- Let's give it a go.

0:16:55 > 0:16:57Next leg, lift up to the good one.

0:16:57 > 0:16:58Perfect.

0:17:00 > 0:17:03- All right. BLEEP - That grey one looks good.

0:17:03 > 0:17:05Now, big push up.

0:17:09 > 0:17:11Mike makes a great start...

0:17:13 > 0:17:15..but halfway up, he freezes.

0:17:15 > 0:17:20- Guys, guys, no.- You've got the grips, you need to...

0:17:20 > 0:17:22Gav, Gav, no.

0:17:22 > 0:17:23Gav.

0:20:53 > 0:20:58with an irregular pulse, where your heart is going too fast.

0:20:58 > 0:21:01And we have also found that the heart has become swollen

0:21:05 > 0:21:07The heart problems have caused the water retention.

0:22:05 > 0:22:09It's still a problem with the heart, but it's not major.
