0:00:02 > 0:00:04They're the Brits who race to the rescue down under.

0:00:04 > 0:00:06Multiple patients critical.

0:00:06 > 0:00:09Everyday heroes saving lives.

0:00:09 > 0:00:1112 miles to run.

0:00:11 > 0:00:12Battling fires...

0:00:12 > 0:00:14If you don't go out now it's too late.

0:00:14 > 0:00:16It can be extremely dangerous.

0:00:16 > 0:00:17..and fighting crime.

0:00:17 > 0:00:18Put your arm down.

0:00:18 > 0:00:19Police! Open the door!

0:00:19 > 0:00:22From the big city to the outback.

0:00:22 > 0:00:25Our policing district is bigger than the whole of the UK.

0:00:25 > 0:00:26From the bush...

0:00:26 > 0:00:31He's been crushed between one of those Dingo diggers and a Ute.

0:00:31 > 0:00:33..to Bondi beach.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35The search continues for a British tourist who hasn't been seen

0:00:35 > 0:00:37since he went for a swim.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40You never quite know what you're in for or what's going to happen.

0:00:40 > 0:00:41Three, three, two on the head in.

0:00:41 > 0:00:44Very high impact. He's really quite critically injured.

0:00:44 > 0:00:47Brits on blue lights under blue skies.

0:00:55 > 0:00:59Today down under, a British shoplifter's caught on camera.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02He was getting too aggressive, I think he was on something.

0:01:02 > 0:01:04- You're under arrest right now. - Go away, don't be silly.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09Flight nurse Sian takes on a tiny passenger.

0:01:09 > 0:01:12He's still requiring a fair amount of oxygen.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15It will result in cardiac arrest if not treated.

0:01:15 > 0:01:20And the animal A&E cares for the casualties of the big freeze.

0:01:20 > 0:01:24We moved to Australia because I'm not a big fan of the cold.

0:01:24 > 0:01:26All our dreams have been shattered.

0:01:32 > 0:01:36It's the climate that brings many migrants down under.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39You can surf on Sydney's beaches in mid-winter thanks to

0:01:39 > 0:01:43sea temperatures that rarely sink below 20 Celsius,

0:01:43 > 0:01:48and few Aussies even bother to have heating in their homes.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50But today the weather's turned.

0:01:50 > 0:01:53It's Lars Peterson in for Jason Staveley this evening.

0:01:53 > 0:01:56With some showers expected for Sydney, could even still get that

0:01:56 > 0:01:58thunderstorm coming through later this evening, as well.

0:01:58 > 0:02:03Flight nurse Sian Ellison, from Newcastle upon Tyne, faces flying

0:02:03 > 0:02:07through the remains of a tropical storm to reach a newborn baby

0:02:07 > 0:02:12with a potentially fatal condition - a collapsed lung, or pneumothorax.

0:02:12 > 0:02:14The problem with a pneumothorax is if it's...

0:02:14 > 0:02:17that collection of air's allowed to develop and gets larger

0:02:17 > 0:02:20and larger, it not only makes it harder for the baby to breathe,

0:02:20 > 0:02:24it can also move the heart across and it can reduce the cardiac

0:02:24 > 0:02:28output and it will result in cardiac arrest if not treated.

0:02:28 > 0:02:32Sian's a member of the NETS team, dedicated to transporting

0:02:32 > 0:02:36babies and infants into the big city for specialist treatment.

0:02:36 > 0:02:41We've been tasked to Dubbo, which is about 370km, I think,

0:02:41 > 0:02:44from Sydney, which if you drove is going to be about

0:02:44 > 0:02:45four and a half hours.

0:02:45 > 0:02:48So rather than drive out there we're going to fly out there with

0:02:48 > 0:02:51air ambulance, so we've got a little plane out waiting for us.

0:02:55 > 0:02:59The team must climb above the weather to clear the massive

0:02:59 > 0:03:00peaks of the Blue Mountains.

0:03:05 > 0:03:09Initially some respiratory distress, but then this morning...

0:03:10 > 0:03:13..had a marked increased work of breathing

0:03:13 > 0:03:16and they did an X-ray - pneumothorax.

0:03:16 > 0:03:17Oh, really?

0:03:27 > 0:03:29Welcome to sunny Dubbo.

0:03:29 > 0:03:31- Yeah.- Not.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37Oh, it's cold.

0:03:37 > 0:03:41Dubbo is a farming community famous for its lamb.

0:03:41 > 0:03:4340,000 people live here,

0:03:43 > 0:03:47but its hospital transfers critical cases to the big city.

0:03:49 > 0:03:53It's freezing. And wet.

0:03:53 > 0:03:55I feel like I'm back in Newcastle again.

0:03:59 > 0:04:02OK, that's lovely. All right, yeah.

0:04:02 > 0:04:06Jock Pye was born the day before yesterday, but he's in a bad way.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10He has a collapsed lung.

0:04:10 > 0:04:14They've tried everything they can to help him absorb more oxygen,

0:04:14 > 0:04:16but none of it's working.

0:04:16 > 0:04:21So, this is the X-ray taken yesterday,

0:04:21 > 0:04:26which possibly shows an early hyperlucency in the left lung

0:04:26 > 0:04:29that has markings right to the periphery.

0:04:29 > 0:04:35Lung today shows obvious pneumothorax on the left side.

0:04:35 > 0:04:39If this continues, the team may have to anaesthetise Jock

0:04:39 > 0:04:41and take over his breathing.

0:04:41 > 0:04:44It's a potentially risky procedure.

0:04:44 > 0:04:46We're just having a discussion at the moment

0:04:46 > 0:04:51whether he actually needs intubating or not before transport.

0:04:52 > 0:04:54OK.

0:04:54 > 0:04:55Now I see it.

0:04:55 > 0:04:57What are we looking at?

0:04:59 > 0:05:00- Yeah.- See, that much...

0:05:00 > 0:05:03The only reason I suggested it is that much...

0:05:03 > 0:05:04Might make a difference, so, yeah.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07Cos I'm surprised that he's not any better.

0:05:08 > 0:05:10Yeah. It's a hard call, isn't it?

0:05:10 > 0:05:13Usual thing is when he hasn't had an improve in oxygenation

0:05:13 > 0:05:17since the pneumothorax was drained successfully...

0:05:17 > 0:05:20He's still requiring a fair amount of oxygen.

0:05:20 > 0:05:23If he doesn't improve, they'll be unable to fly him,

0:05:23 > 0:05:28and his survival could depend on specialist treatment in Sydney.

0:05:40 > 0:05:44Sydney is six times the size of London with less than half

0:05:44 > 0:05:48the population, but the rush hour is just as frantic down under.

0:05:48 > 0:05:52There's just been a three-car accident on the N4 pass.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55Greystanes Road, city-bound, only one lane getting through.

0:05:55 > 0:05:58Significant traffic delays down the Sydney Olympic Park.

0:05:58 > 0:06:02And today it's brought another emergency for the crew

0:06:02 > 0:06:05of the CareFlight chopper that rushes trauma doctors

0:06:05 > 0:06:08to urban accidents by air.

0:06:08 > 0:06:10Road traffic collision, multiple calls.

0:06:10 > 0:06:13- Cross street is Windsor Road. - Yeah.- Cheers, mate.

0:06:13 > 0:06:16This medical team can perform surgery in the street,

0:06:16 > 0:06:18and its speed saves lives.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27It's RAF veteran John Legge's job to get them

0:06:27 > 0:06:30off the ground within two minutes of the call.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33Five miles to run, three, three, two, mate, on the head in.

0:06:33 > 0:06:36Liverpudlian John used to fly wounded soldiers

0:06:36 > 0:06:40out of the front line in Afghanistan as the crew chief on a giant

0:06:40 > 0:06:43Chinook helicopter, often while under fire.

0:06:43 > 0:06:45- RADIO:- Multiple patients critical.

0:06:45 > 0:06:48Now he's responsible for navigating CareFlight 4

0:06:48 > 0:06:51through Sydney's crowded skies.

0:06:51 > 0:06:53Obviously the priority initially is for us

0:06:53 > 0:06:54to get to the scene as quickly as we can.

0:06:54 > 0:06:56We've got to identify the scene,

0:06:56 > 0:06:59make sure that where we land is the best place to land for the doctor

0:06:59 > 0:07:01and the paramedic to get to the patients as soon as possible.

0:07:01 > 0:07:05RADIO CHATTER

0:07:05 > 0:07:07Probably about half a mile short.

0:07:07 > 0:07:11He's British-born pilot Greg Ohlsson's eyes and ears,

0:07:11 > 0:07:13talking to medical control on the radio

0:07:13 > 0:07:16and looking out for likely landing sites.

0:07:16 > 0:07:18That's copied.

0:07:18 > 0:07:22It's right next to a field, so we should be good to get in there.

0:07:22 > 0:07:25It looks like there's waste ground right next to the crash.

0:07:27 > 0:07:30OK, accident should be down on the nose now.

0:07:30 > 0:07:34But landing here can be as tricky as it was back in the RAF -

0:07:34 > 0:07:37someone's built houses on the vacant lot.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40There's a development area just coming through now.

0:07:40 > 0:07:42Ambulance on the far side of that.

0:07:42 > 0:07:43Coming on our nose.

0:07:46 > 0:07:49I really need you, Giles, to look at those back yards,

0:07:49 > 0:07:51make sure we're not causing a storm here.

0:07:51 > 0:07:52Do you think we are?

0:07:52 > 0:07:55We could just go a little bit further away and we'll be fine.

0:07:55 > 0:07:57Back yard's good.

0:07:57 > 0:07:58OK, coming to ground.

0:07:58 > 0:08:00Wires are good on the right there, Andrew?

0:08:06 > 0:08:08The smash is a bad one.

0:08:08 > 0:08:11Head on, five victims, including a young boy.

0:08:11 > 0:08:13Legge! Can I have some goggles?

0:08:13 > 0:08:16- What's that, mate?- Goggles.- Goggles.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18John's job is to keep the medics supplied

0:08:18 > 0:08:20with the equipment they need.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23- John, can you cope with the ultrasound, as well?- OK.

0:08:23 > 0:08:27'We are very much obviously a team, we've all got our specialist roles.

0:08:27 > 0:08:31'But there's definitely points in the...in the mission,

0:08:31 > 0:08:34'if you like, where there roles do overlap.'

0:08:34 > 0:08:35Dr Andy's concerned.

0:08:35 > 0:08:39Patients with fractured femurs can bleed to death internally.

0:08:39 > 0:08:43I've got low on the right, Giles, I've got lung sliding on the right.

0:08:43 > 0:08:47Medics are seriously worried about two of the five victims.

0:08:47 > 0:08:50Legge, worth checking the fluid bundle from inside.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52The fluid bundle inside.

0:08:52 > 0:08:57An ambulance service chopper is arriving to fly one of them.

0:08:57 > 0:09:00Got the fluids running, shall we switch straight to blood?

0:09:00 > 0:09:05While Dr Andy fights to stabilise his patient, John's planning ahead.

0:09:05 > 0:09:09He's concerned that rubberneckers could make their takeoff dangerous.

0:09:09 > 0:09:11Is there anyone who can look out? I'm just thinking,

0:09:11 > 0:09:14cos there's lots of people using this as a walkway.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17- Yeah.- And generally when we start engines that's like a magnet.

0:09:20 > 0:09:21Everybody ready?

0:09:23 > 0:09:26We have to take into account how we're going to get the patient

0:09:26 > 0:09:29transported to hospital. We always have to kind of adapt

0:09:29 > 0:09:32to how we're going to transport the patient. Initially, anyway.

0:09:32 > 0:09:36The medics decide it'll be safer to drive their patient to hospital.

0:09:36 > 0:09:39It means they can monitor him better.

0:09:39 > 0:09:40- Ready to load?- Yep.

0:09:42 > 0:09:44Cos we had to tube him there's a chance that

0:09:44 > 0:09:48they may have to do things to him en route.

0:09:48 > 0:09:53So if you do have the option to go by road, you take that option.

0:09:53 > 0:09:56And because the hospital isn't too far away,

0:09:56 > 0:09:59that's what they decided to do.

0:09:59 > 0:10:03For crewman John and pilot Greg it's time to return to base.

0:10:03 > 0:10:07It's the CareFlight chopper's speed -

0:10:07 > 0:10:09160mph - that saves lives.

0:10:09 > 0:10:12OK, I'm ducking across some power lines now...

0:10:12 > 0:10:16Pilot Greg's a naturalised Aussie, John's still a Brit.

0:10:16 > 0:10:19But neither would swap their jobs down under for life in

0:10:19 > 0:10:23a UK air ambulance - flying and landing are easier here.

0:10:23 > 0:10:26You're very rarely less than,

0:10:26 > 0:10:29or more than, 500 metres away from a cricket oval.

0:10:31 > 0:10:34- So it's probably why you're winning the Ashes.- That's true.

0:10:38 > 0:10:42Because we generally only get called to high-end trauma,

0:10:42 > 0:10:45you see the people that you're helping and then

0:10:45 > 0:10:48we'll take them to the hospital then the doctors and the paramedics,

0:10:48 > 0:10:50they know the condition of the patients and stuff.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53So even at the end of the shift you kind of know what

0:10:53 > 0:10:56you've achieved, which is a nice feeling.

0:11:07 > 0:11:10Australia is a house-proud place.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13Doing it yourself is a passion, and thousands of Aussies

0:11:13 > 0:11:16choose to build their homes from the ground up.

0:11:16 > 0:11:21As a nation, they spend £10 billion a year on home improvements.

0:11:21 > 0:11:24In Perth, British cops Andrew Page

0:11:24 > 0:11:27and Richard Casey-Chisholm enjoy homes that would've been

0:11:27 > 0:11:31well beyond their budgets back in the Warwickshire force.

0:11:31 > 0:11:34But today they're on the trail of a fellow Englishman

0:11:34 > 0:11:37who's been accused of doing his DIY on the cheap.

0:11:37 > 0:11:41What's happened here is somebody's been shoplifting.

0:11:41 > 0:11:44He's tried to leave the store, they've stopped him

0:11:44 > 0:11:47and it looks like he's assaulted one of the security staff.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50So we've got a stealing and an assault.

0:11:50 > 0:11:54Staff at a store on a Perth retail park were already suspicious of a

0:11:54 > 0:11:59man with a British accent who seemed to return a lot of goods for cash.

0:11:59 > 0:12:02Then they spotted this on the CCTV -

0:12:02 > 0:12:05an expensive tool set shoved up his jumper.

0:12:05 > 0:12:08How you doing? Andy. How are you? What's gone on?

0:12:08 > 0:12:11He's a regular and he's known to us, like, you know, pick stuff up.

0:12:11 > 0:12:13So just kept an eye on him.

0:12:13 > 0:12:15He picked up a tool kit kind of thing.

0:12:15 > 0:12:17As soon as he exited I approached him

0:12:17 > 0:12:19and said, "Man, you got something on you?"

0:12:19 > 0:12:21I said, "what do you have?" and he started to get a bit aggressive.

0:12:21 > 0:12:23- He said, like, "Do not touch me." - OK.

0:12:23 > 0:12:27Thanks to the store's security team, this case looks pretty open

0:12:27 > 0:12:29and shut for the police.

0:12:29 > 0:12:32Not only was the crime captured on camera, the suspect recently

0:12:32 > 0:12:35left his name and address when he hired some tools.

0:12:35 > 0:12:38- He's nightly in the store. - Oh, OK, so you know him.

0:12:38 > 0:12:41- I don't personally... - No, but you know his surname.

0:12:41 > 0:12:43Yeah, he always wears a beanie.

0:12:43 > 0:12:44Yeah.

0:12:44 > 0:12:47It's a different colour every day.

0:12:48 > 0:12:51This guy certainly didn't want to be caught.

0:12:51 > 0:12:55As he makes his way to the exit, the security team ask him to stop.

0:12:55 > 0:12:57There's been a mention of an assault.

0:12:57 > 0:13:00Did you take a punch or something? What's happened?

0:13:00 > 0:13:02Yeah, he held on to me from here and just there.

0:13:02 > 0:13:05- OK, so he's grabbed hold of you. - Yeah, just like...in the struggle.

0:13:05 > 0:13:08This international stand-off ends with a rapid exit

0:13:08 > 0:13:11by the shoplifter, minus his swag.

0:13:11 > 0:13:13He was getting too aggressive. I think he was on something.

0:13:16 > 0:13:19Basically, what's happening now, we've got all the statements,

0:13:19 > 0:13:21CCTV, everything's pretty well done,

0:13:21 > 0:13:23so we're going to do some checks on him.

0:13:23 > 0:13:25Got to go and pick up our sergeant

0:13:25 > 0:13:28cos he wants to come out for a bit and then we'll go and try

0:13:28 > 0:13:31and locate our offender for this and arrest him.

0:13:38 > 0:13:41More than half the people living in this area of Perth

0:13:41 > 0:13:44are British migrants like the wanted man.

0:13:45 > 0:13:48It turns out crime runs in the family.

0:13:48 > 0:13:52According to intelligence, the wanted man's wife is in jail.

0:13:52 > 0:13:54In Rockingham, look.

0:13:56 > 0:13:59Aww, they could have a little family reunion.

0:13:59 > 0:14:01For criminals without Aussie citizenship,

0:14:01 > 0:14:05a visit from the law can be a big deal.

0:14:05 > 0:14:08Some British passport holders have been sent back to the UK after

0:14:08 > 0:14:1340 years down under after they've been convicted of serious offences.

0:14:14 > 0:14:17- What number?- Three. There it is.

0:14:17 > 0:14:20- Victor Charlie 108. - 'Charlie 108.'

0:14:20 > 0:14:23Just for information, we're at Port Kennedy trying to affect an arrest.

0:14:26 > 0:14:28KNOCKING

0:14:28 > 0:14:30- How you doing?- I need to speak to you in relation to an incident

0:14:30 > 0:14:33- that's happened in Port Kennedy. - What about it?

0:14:33 > 0:14:35- Some stealing. A chisel set. - No, not me, mate.

0:14:35 > 0:14:37- No?- No.- OK.

0:14:37 > 0:14:39- What have you come here for? - Because you've been named.

0:14:39 > 0:14:42They've got your registration plate and they know you

0:14:42 > 0:14:43cos you're always in there.

0:14:43 > 0:14:46You've had stuff off them before, so they know you.

0:14:46 > 0:14:47Well, I really...

0:14:47 > 0:14:50Mate, I really don't care how well they know me. I haven't been.

0:14:50 > 0:14:52- That's fine.- Not me. - OK, that's fine.

0:14:52 > 0:14:55I'm arresting you on suspicion of stealing, then, in Port Kennedy.

0:14:55 > 0:14:57We're going to interview you and we'll go from there.

0:14:57 > 0:14:59You're not interviewing me cos I've done nothing wrong.

0:14:59 > 0:15:02We'll interview you anyway. You've got to come down the station.

0:15:02 > 0:15:05Can I just check with my lawyer to see if I've got to come down?

0:15:05 > 0:15:07You have to because you're under arrest.

0:15:07 > 0:15:09You have to. There's no choice.

0:15:09 > 0:15:12- Can you imagine how...?- Easy now. Calm, mate. Mate, calm down, OK?

0:15:12 > 0:15:13I'm standing within my own house.

0:15:13 > 0:15:15You're under arrest right now, OK?

0:15:15 > 0:15:17- Bring your top, as well, cos... - Bring my top?

0:15:17 > 0:15:19- because I'm seizing that as evidence.- Don't be silly.

0:15:19 > 0:15:21- Yep.- I only just put that on.

0:15:21 > 0:15:22That's all right, though,

0:15:22 > 0:15:24cos that matches the description given, so come on.

0:15:24 > 0:15:26We've got to go.

0:15:26 > 0:15:29Andy and Richard aren't taking no for an answer.

0:15:29 > 0:15:30Jump in. Go on, then.

0:15:32 > 0:15:34He's obviously denying being there, etc.

0:15:34 > 0:15:39He's wearing the same top anyway, so seized his top as evidence.

0:15:39 > 0:15:42Yeah, he's not very happy about it.

0:15:42 > 0:15:43But hey. Oh, well, never mind.

0:15:45 > 0:15:48Suspects can avoid a criminal conviction for a minor offence

0:15:48 > 0:15:52by agreeing to pay a fine that doesn't appear on their record.

0:15:52 > 0:15:54It's called an infringement.

0:15:54 > 0:15:59It saves court time and money, but carries a hefty penalty.

0:15:59 > 0:16:03You can buy a lot of chisels with 500 -

0:16:03 > 0:16:05that's around £250.

0:16:07 > 0:16:11At the police station the suspect is still protesting his innocence.

0:16:11 > 0:16:15..jumped on me, done all this to my neck.

0:16:15 > 0:16:16- Tore all my clothes off me.- Yeah.

0:16:16 > 0:16:18I don't know why they did it.

0:16:18 > 0:16:20I've got to ask somebody why they did it,

0:16:20 > 0:16:22see if it's right. But you know...

0:16:23 > 0:16:25Let's go.

0:16:25 > 0:16:28It's not unusual for Richard to be bringing a fellow

0:16:28 > 0:16:30Englishman in for questioning.

0:16:30 > 0:16:33But before confronting his suspect with the video evidence,

0:16:33 > 0:16:36he has to check in his gun.

0:16:36 > 0:16:39It's just policy, just in case anything happens

0:16:39 > 0:16:41and they try and grab it.

0:16:41 > 0:16:46Within the hour, the light-fingered handyman admits his guilt.

0:16:46 > 0:16:49He's come clean. He's admitted he's done the stealing

0:16:49 > 0:16:51now he's calmed down.

0:16:51 > 0:16:53He's got no previous convictions.

0:16:53 > 0:16:54We've got all their goods back

0:16:54 > 0:16:57so because of that we can deal with it by infringement.

0:16:57 > 0:17:00He's happy to receive it, so he's going to sit in the room now

0:17:00 > 0:17:02while we sort out the infringement notice.

0:17:02 > 0:17:05We'll issue that and then he'll go.

0:17:05 > 0:17:07Jump in and we'll give you a lift back, OK?

0:17:07 > 0:17:10He's 500 poorer.

0:17:10 > 0:17:13Now he's been given that fine he wants his chisel set back.

0:17:15 > 0:17:18He's saying it like, you know, in the way that, oh, well might as well

0:17:18 > 0:17:21get the item if I stole it and you have to cop the penalty for it.

0:17:21 > 0:17:24Hmm... Don't think it works like that.

0:17:38 > 0:17:42Try to get that on straight at the palm because it just kinks if not.

0:17:44 > 0:17:48In the farming town of Dubbo, flight nurse Sian Ellison is assessing

0:17:48 > 0:17:52whether it's safe to fly tiny Jock Pye to hospital

0:17:52 > 0:17:54300 miles away in Sydney.

0:17:55 > 0:17:58Jock's fighting for breath. He needs the intensive care

0:17:58 > 0:18:01only a specialist children's hospital can provide.

0:18:01 > 0:18:04While this child's been currently very well looked after

0:18:04 > 0:18:06in Dubbo Hospital,

0:18:06 > 0:18:10there's only a certain level of care that that hospital can provide.

0:18:10 > 0:18:12So by bringing that baby to Sydney,

0:18:12 > 0:18:16it means that all escalations of treatment can be provided.

0:18:18 > 0:18:21Jock's mum Sarah and dad Troy are worried.

0:18:23 > 0:18:26Yeah, so everything that the intensive care unit

0:18:26 > 0:18:28has we pretty much have.

0:18:28 > 0:18:30So Abhijat's an intensive-care doctor.

0:18:30 > 0:18:32I'm an intensive-care nurse.

0:18:32 > 0:18:34We have a ventilator, we have machines, we have pumps,

0:18:34 > 0:18:37we have drugs, we have... We're stocked.

0:18:37 > 0:18:38So...

0:18:40 > 0:18:41We'll...

0:18:41 > 0:18:43We can transport him safely.

0:18:44 > 0:18:48But the remains of a tropical storm blanketing the mountains that

0:18:48 > 0:18:52lie between Dubbo and Sydney means that this flight is not routine.

0:18:52 > 0:18:54Ready to go.

0:18:56 > 0:19:00- You can pop your hand in there. - Oh, no, that's all right.

0:19:00 > 0:19:04Can I grab about four little salines

0:19:04 > 0:19:06and a 20ml syringe?

0:19:06 > 0:19:08Yeah, that'll be good, thanks.

0:19:10 > 0:19:11OK, let's go.

0:19:13 > 0:19:15RADIO CHATTER

0:19:24 > 0:19:27At 6,000 feet, the cabin pressure and the amount of oxygen

0:19:27 > 0:19:31in the air are significantly lower than at sea level.

0:19:31 > 0:19:34It's of little consequence to an adult,

0:19:34 > 0:19:36but it could be crucial for Jock.

0:19:36 > 0:19:39He's being given extra oxygen from a bottle.

0:19:42 > 0:19:45The air ambulance pilot will fly as low as is safe.

0:19:45 > 0:19:49As soon as the plane's clear of the mountains, he'll try to descend.

0:19:58 > 0:20:03We have very successfully transferred this 34, 35 week baby.

0:20:03 > 0:20:08The baby has, er, been quite well throughout the transfer.

0:20:12 > 0:20:15Within half an hour, Jock will be receiving the specialist

0:20:15 > 0:20:17hospital care he needs.

0:20:24 > 0:20:27Thankfully, after several days in intensive care,

0:20:27 > 0:20:32Jock pulls through and mother and baby soon return to the country.

0:20:36 > 0:20:40Australia has twice as many roads as the UK,

0:20:40 > 0:20:42nearly half a million miles,

0:20:42 > 0:20:45and only a twentieth of the traffic.

0:20:45 > 0:20:49But away from the cities, tarmac is in short supply.

0:20:49 > 0:20:52Aussie drivers need four-wheel drive to reach many

0:20:52 > 0:20:54parts of their vast continent.

0:20:54 > 0:20:58But these rural dirt tracks have their dangers.

0:20:58 > 0:21:01And today, near Perth, the British officers of the local

0:21:01 > 0:21:04response team are on their way to a serious crash.

0:21:04 > 0:21:06We're going to an accident.

0:21:06 > 0:21:09Looks like it's on an off-road track somewhere

0:21:09 > 0:21:11so we're just going to get to the location and see what's going on.

0:21:11 > 0:21:13British constables Andy and Richard

0:21:13 > 0:21:16and their sergeant Troy know the road where the accident

0:21:16 > 0:21:21happened is used by off-roaders practising their skills.

0:21:21 > 0:21:24We've dispatched a, er, medi-vac helicopter.

0:21:24 > 0:21:28So it sounds quite serious, so we'll get an update.

0:21:28 > 0:21:31- You all right?- There's two casualties, both unconscious.

0:21:31 > 0:21:32One was physically under the vehicle.

0:21:32 > 0:21:35But now there's paramedics, there's four paramedics

0:21:35 > 0:21:37- and two managers that's working on them now, so...- OK.

0:21:37 > 0:21:40- We'll just wait and find out. - It's that bit over there, is it?

0:21:40 > 0:21:42They went down this limestone track here.

0:21:42 > 0:21:45And then we've lost them. So we can't see.

0:21:45 > 0:21:47Sorry?

0:21:47 > 0:21:49Even getting to the scene is challenging.

0:21:49 > 0:21:51It's over there.

0:21:51 > 0:21:53It's on... Er, yeah, you go down just off to the left -

0:21:53 > 0:21:55there's a bend.

0:21:55 > 0:21:56Ugh!

0:21:56 > 0:21:59LAUGHTER

0:21:59 > 0:22:01I wasn't expecting that.

0:22:09 > 0:22:12Firefighters - or firies, as they're known here -

0:22:12 > 0:22:17and volunteers from the local rescue team have freed the injured man.

0:22:17 > 0:22:19Think he'll pull out of it or...?

0:22:19 > 0:22:21Oh, it's too hard to say, yeah...

0:22:24 > 0:22:27Trying to drift, apparently, according to the rear passenger,

0:22:27 > 0:22:29so it sunk him and rolled and he's got stuck underneath.

0:22:29 > 0:22:32So they've managed to get out. She's got some shoulder issues which

0:22:32 > 0:22:34have been treated for obvious reasons.

0:22:34 > 0:22:35The other two are more important.

0:22:35 > 0:22:38And then the driver's stuck, but they managed to get him out.

0:22:38 > 0:22:40The driver's badly hurt.

0:22:40 > 0:22:44Eyewitnesses used a jack to ease the weight of the car off him.

0:22:44 > 0:22:46I take it he's still... is unconscious.

0:22:47 > 0:22:50Don't know. It looks like it.

0:22:51 > 0:22:54They need to find out if this is a public road.

0:22:54 > 0:22:58If it's not, many of the usual laws don't apply.

0:22:58 > 0:23:01Looks like they're going to use helicopter to

0:23:01 > 0:23:04transport probably one or two of the casualties to hospital.

0:23:06 > 0:23:09Paramedics fear the driver's in a bad way.

0:23:09 > 0:23:12They've called in the air ambulance to fly him

0:23:12 > 0:23:1450 miles to hospital in Perth.

0:23:17 > 0:23:20He has serious head injuries.

0:23:20 > 0:23:23But it's feared his body took the full weight of the rolling

0:23:23 > 0:23:25vehicle after he was thrown free.

0:23:25 > 0:23:29He'll need body scans and X-rays.

0:23:29 > 0:23:32For the police, it's back on patrol.

0:23:32 > 0:23:34It turns out this is a private track.

0:23:34 > 0:23:36There'll be no charges,

0:23:36 > 0:23:40but the medical consequences for the driver could be very serious.

0:23:48 > 0:23:51The year-round sun, laid-back lifestyle

0:23:51 > 0:23:56and warm seas bring 25,000 British immigrants to Australia each

0:23:56 > 0:24:00year and few miss the British climate.

0:24:00 > 0:24:03Vet Lucy King from Bristol certainly doesn't,

0:24:03 > 0:24:07but she didn't expect the worst of the UK's winter to follow her.

0:24:07 > 0:24:10Quite exciting. Everyone's getting overexcited about the snow.

0:24:10 > 0:24:12But it's cold.

0:24:12 > 0:24:15This is June in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney,

0:24:15 > 0:24:20and this is the harshest winter they've seen in 20 years.

0:24:20 > 0:24:23A foot of snow has fallen around the town of Katoomba,

0:24:23 > 0:24:28and for the first time in living memory, all roads in are closed.

0:24:28 > 0:24:30I came in, I braved the snow,

0:24:30 > 0:24:32because we've got some in-patients so I had to come in

0:24:32 > 0:24:36and check on the dogs and cats we've got here in the clinic.

0:24:36 > 0:24:39This is Aika. She fell over in the snow

0:24:39 > 0:24:42and she's hurt her back.

0:24:42 > 0:24:44So we're keeping her in tonight on pain relief

0:24:44 > 0:24:46and just resting her, keeping her nice and warm.

0:24:46 > 0:24:51When she joined the local animal A&E, Lucy never envisaged this.

0:24:51 > 0:24:54We moved to Australia because I'm not a big fan of the cold.

0:24:54 > 0:24:57And I was like, "It's warm all the time over there.

0:24:57 > 0:25:00"Even in the winter it'll be warm."

0:25:00 > 0:25:02All our dreams have been shattered.

0:25:02 > 0:25:06The weather may be familiar, but the patients aren't.

0:25:06 > 0:25:10They bring in wildlife. We've had a couple of possums,

0:25:10 > 0:25:13a wood duck and a cockatoo.

0:25:13 > 0:25:14They're very unusual to me

0:25:14 > 0:25:17and no-one else is particularly excited

0:25:17 > 0:25:19cos they see them all the time.

0:25:19 > 0:25:22So someone brought in a parrot.

0:25:22 > 0:25:25I'm not sure how they managed to pick it up.

0:25:25 > 0:25:27It looks angry.

0:25:27 > 0:25:29Someone told me the other day that

0:25:29 > 0:25:32if people find a poisonous snake, they try and catch it and take

0:25:32 > 0:25:36it to the vet so that we can get their venom and make anti-venom.

0:25:36 > 0:25:38But I'm not sure if that's true.

0:25:38 > 0:25:40I need to ask people cos I wouldn't want to try

0:25:40 > 0:25:42and get venom off of a deadly snake.

0:25:44 > 0:25:48Lucy decided to begin a new life down under with her dog Tex,

0:25:48 > 0:25:52and she still has a big canine caseload.

0:25:54 > 0:25:56Coco has a cough which has been going on for a little

0:25:56 > 0:26:01while, so we're just going to examine the back of his throat,

0:26:01 > 0:26:03his tonsils, and his soft palette, and we're going to do an X-ray

0:26:03 > 0:26:07of his chest to make sure there's nothing horrible going on there.

0:26:07 > 0:26:10Good girl.

0:26:10 > 0:26:12Do you want to prep and then I'll run out?

0:26:18 > 0:26:21So this here should be black like everywhere else.

0:26:21 > 0:26:24So that, that should be sort of black lung

0:26:24 > 0:26:27and it's kind of greyed out, which means there's fluid or

0:26:27 > 0:26:31something in there, which is a bit of a concern.

0:26:31 > 0:26:33But hopefully it's just a bit of a chest infection

0:26:33 > 0:26:36and it'll clear up with the antibiotics.

0:26:36 > 0:26:38A vet's work is similar the world over,

0:26:38 > 0:26:41and some patients originally hail from home.

0:26:41 > 0:26:43So we're going to spay Mollie today, is that right?

0:26:43 > 0:26:45Yep.

0:26:45 > 0:26:47Hey, puppy.

0:26:47 > 0:26:48- Being an English lass...- Mmm?

0:26:48 > 0:26:52..she's half Smithfield terrier.

0:26:52 > 0:26:53Oh, is she?

0:26:53 > 0:26:56Now, Smithfield terriers come from Smithfield.

0:26:56 > 0:26:59Mm. When was the last time she had anything to eat?

0:26:59 > 0:27:02About half past seven last night she had steak, fried biscuits,

0:27:02 > 0:27:05beans, carrots...

0:27:05 > 0:27:06That's about it.

0:27:06 > 0:27:08OK, good.

0:27:11 > 0:27:13I want steak and carrots for dinner.

0:27:13 > 0:27:15I like that they do that.

0:27:15 > 0:27:19They seem to get, like, loads of really nice food.

0:27:19 > 0:27:22Whereas in the UK they would just get, like, meat and biscuits.

0:27:22 > 0:27:26But she's very cute. She deserves steak and carrot.

0:27:26 > 0:27:29Lucy's found herself dealing with some unusual emergency

0:27:29 > 0:27:34admissions, including the curious case of the snowboarding dog.

0:27:34 > 0:27:38This is Ninja. He was out with his owner playing in the snow.

0:27:38 > 0:27:41His owner was snowboarding and Ninja got caught under the snowboard

0:27:41 > 0:27:43and has cut his foot.

0:27:43 > 0:27:45So we're just going to give him

0:27:45 > 0:27:47an anaesthetic and clip and clean that.

0:27:47 > 0:27:49I think it needs a couple of stitches.

0:27:49 > 0:27:51Oh, puppy.

0:27:51 > 0:27:53DOG WHINES

0:27:53 > 0:27:55Good boy.

0:27:55 > 0:27:56You're so brave.

0:27:58 > 0:28:01We don't get much snow, especially not in the south west,

0:28:01 > 0:28:05so this is the first snowboard incident I've had to deal with.

0:28:07 > 0:28:11So we've had to move into an X-ray room because we're so busy

0:28:11 > 0:28:14and the other operating rooms are in use.

0:28:14 > 0:28:18That's why I'm stooped over here and squished next to a wall.

0:28:18 > 0:28:22Cool. Job done.

0:28:22 > 0:28:24See him in a couple days for a check-up.

0:28:24 > 0:28:29Like Ninja, Lucy's looking forward to the thaw, when the Blue Mountains

0:28:29 > 0:28:33once more become Australia's favourite summer playground.
