0:00:48 > 0:00:52I'm going to dissect the space behind the breasts now.

0:00:56 > 0:01:00The major side effect was erections!
0:01:00 > 0:01:02And the devastation it can bring.
0:01:03 > 0:01:07She was transferred over to Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital
0:01:07 > 0:01:08where she expired.
0:01:10 > 0:01:13Through the highs and lows,
0:01:13 > 0:01:17this is the inside story of how cosmetic surgery works.
0:01:35 > 0:01:38Lucy is a 24-year-old beautician from Essex.
0:01:40 > 0:01:42MUSIC: "Only Girl (In the World)" by Rihanna
0:01:42 > 0:01:46# Like I'm the only one that's in command
0:01:46 > 0:01:50# Cos I'm the only one who understands
0:01:50 > 0:01:56# How to make you feel like a man Yeah... #
0:01:56 > 0:01:59SHE SCREAMS
0:01:59 > 0:02:02Oh, well done!
0:02:02 > 0:02:04That was the weirdest thing in the world!
0:02:04 > 0:02:07- Did you see me? - Was it good?- It was amazing!
0:02:07 > 0:02:10Lucy is confident with extreme sports.
0:02:10 > 0:02:14I think if you've done a skydive, you can do anything. Hopefully.
0:02:14 > 0:02:16HE LAUGHS
0:02:16 > 0:02:18Did you see me picking my lips?
0:02:18 > 0:02:21So did you get pushed out or did you jump it?
0:02:21 > 0:02:22SHE LAUGHS
0:02:22 > 0:02:24But she's never been confident about her body.
0:02:24 > 0:02:28I started dieting when I was younger because I was quite big.
0:02:28 > 0:02:31And it did massively get me down.
0:02:31 > 0:02:36I joined a gym and my mum came with me and I completely changed
0:02:36 > 0:02:40what I was eating, and in total, I lost about 4 stone.
0:02:40 > 0:02:43In two weeks, Lucy's going to change her body again
0:02:43 > 0:02:47and is having cosmetic surgery to enlarge her breasts.
0:02:47 > 0:02:50So after dieting, my boobs are really saggy
0:02:50 > 0:02:55and I just need them fuller, so I actually really hate my boobs now.
0:02:55 > 0:02:57She knows how she'd like her body to look.
0:02:57 > 0:02:59Never going to look like Kelly Brook
0:02:59 > 0:03:02but if you ask me what I thought was a beautiful woman, I'd say
0:03:02 > 0:03:05someone like Kelly Brook, Beyonce, J-Lo.
0:03:05 > 0:03:07You know, voluptuous women.
0:03:07 > 0:03:10They haven't necessarily got massive boobs, have they?
0:03:10 > 0:03:12Kelly Brook, maybe her, but...
0:03:12 > 0:03:13They're not super-skinny, are they?
0:03:13 > 0:03:16No, exactly!
0:03:16 > 0:03:20Her mum has mixed feelings about Lucy's boob job.
0:03:20 > 0:03:22At first I thought it was a bit dramatic
0:03:22 > 0:03:26but she has got quite an issue with her body
0:03:26 > 0:03:29so if it makes her happy...
0:03:29 > 0:03:35But I think you're worried because at the end of the day it's an operation, isn't it?
0:03:35 > 0:03:39I just look at myself and think no, I'm not happy with
0:03:39 > 0:03:42the way I look, and I know I can change it so why not?
0:03:42 > 0:03:43When you go out - you get dressed up,
0:03:43 > 0:03:46and go out with your friends and everyone is looking lovely.
0:03:46 > 0:03:48I suppose that is my biggest issue with my body now.
0:03:48 > 0:03:51If you're in relationships, it's something you are conscious of,
0:03:51 > 0:03:53when you're with someone.
0:03:53 > 0:03:56As long as you don't want your bottom done next...
0:03:56 > 0:03:57I don't need that!
0:03:57 > 0:03:59Cos you're bottom's fine!
0:04:02 > 0:04:07In 2011, nearly 40,000 women and 5,000 men went under the knife
0:04:07 > 0:04:09for cosmetic procedures.
0:04:09 > 0:04:13And the most popular operation - the boob job.
0:04:18 > 0:04:20Lucy's surgery is tomorrow
0:04:20 > 0:04:24and today she has to decide what size implants to get.
0:04:24 > 0:04:27- Hi Lucy, come on in, I'm Nick. - Thank you.
0:04:27 > 0:04:31During her consultation, a 3D image of her breasts is created
0:04:31 > 0:04:34and then simulated, so she can see how they'll look
0:04:34 > 0:04:36with the implants inside.
0:04:36 > 0:04:40It gives everyone an opportunity to try before they buy.
0:04:40 > 0:04:44Have a look. When you go out to try a dress on, or a pair of jeans,
0:04:44 > 0:04:48you try them on, and this is the same kind of thing.
0:04:48 > 0:04:51If we can remove that off...
0:04:51 > 0:04:52Look straight ahead and...
0:04:57 > 0:05:01Inside Lucy's breasts, there are around 20 milk-producing lobes
0:05:01 > 0:05:03that spread out from the nipple.
0:05:03 > 0:05:07During pregnancy and breastfeeding, these lobes fill and swell
0:05:07 > 0:05:09making them bigger than normal.
0:05:14 > 0:05:17Breasts also change in size throughout a woman's life
0:05:17 > 0:05:19as she gains and loses weight.
0:05:19 > 0:05:22That's because breasts are also made of fat.
0:05:22 > 0:05:26Bigger breasts simply means more fat.
0:05:26 > 0:05:30Whilst dieting, Lucy lost fat in her thighs, buttocks,
0:05:30 > 0:05:33waist and her breasts, which is why they got smaller.
0:05:35 > 0:05:38So those are the three images we require
0:05:38 > 0:05:42- and we'll run through the assessment. - OK.
0:05:42 > 0:05:46Where I've lost weight that's a lot more noticeable
0:05:46 > 0:05:48and like I say I feel, I just hate them.
0:05:50 > 0:05:51Before her operation
0:05:51 > 0:05:55Lucy has to choose between a C or D cup breast.
0:05:55 > 0:05:57So, this is you as you are,
0:05:57 > 0:06:01and here we have the implants that you've been discussing.
0:06:01 > 0:06:04So what we've done is simulate the placement of the implant
0:06:04 > 0:06:08Here we've got much fuller.
0:06:08 > 0:06:10Is that the equivalent to a D?
0:06:10 > 0:06:13Yeah, yes, equivalent to a D cup.
0:06:13 > 0:06:16It definitely fills it out more, doesn't it?
0:06:16 > 0:06:18I feel like you're getting much more what
0:06:18 > 0:06:21I want to achieve with this one, as much as it's only slight.
0:06:21 > 0:06:24I feel like you're gaining a lot more here.
0:06:24 > 0:06:26So I'm now seeing that the issues that
0:06:26 > 0:06:31I want to correct are going to be corrected from the surgery.
0:06:34 > 0:06:36It's definitely put my mind at ease
0:06:36 > 0:06:39and I'm feeling a lot happier about the surgery.
0:06:44 > 0:06:47It's not just women who feel self-conscious about their bodies.
0:06:47 > 0:06:50A recent university study found that more guys worry
0:06:50 > 0:06:52about their body image than girls.
0:06:55 > 0:06:59Sales of male skincare products are five times higher than in the '90s.
0:07:02 > 0:07:04But not every man's needs are met by a facial
0:07:04 > 0:07:07or a back, sack and crack wax.
0:07:07 > 0:07:08HE MOANS
0:07:09 > 0:07:12Surveys reveal the top concerns for men
0:07:12 > 0:07:15are beer bellies, and bald patches.
0:07:15 > 0:07:17MUSIC: "Filthy Gorgeous" by Scissor Sisters
0:07:17 > 0:07:18# Cos you're filthy... #
0:07:20 > 0:07:23Ollie's a 27-year-old hairdresser from Cheshire.
0:07:23 > 0:07:25That'll have to do.
0:07:25 > 0:07:28He started losing his hair in his teens.
0:07:28 > 0:07:29Don't hurt me.
0:07:29 > 0:07:33- Would I do that? - I'm very sensitive today.
0:07:33 > 0:07:34- Very sensitive.- Yes.
0:07:34 > 0:07:36Self-esteem is definitely affected by hair loss.
0:07:36 > 0:07:40I started noticing I was losing my hair at 19.
0:07:40 > 0:07:42I'm in the hairdressing industry
0:07:42 > 0:07:44and it does make me feel a little bit envious.
0:07:44 > 0:07:48People are coming in with magazines and you can create them new styles
0:07:48 > 0:07:50and you think, well, why can't I do that with my own hair?
0:07:50 > 0:07:54I want to portray this sort of image to people that I'm trendy,
0:07:54 > 0:07:57I've got the latest cut and stuff...But I can't.
0:07:57 > 0:08:02So I don't think people realise how much it gets to me.
0:08:02 > 0:08:06Steph, you'll know won't you, how upset I've been over it?
0:08:06 > 0:08:09I don't think you can help it. Your own body image.
0:08:09 > 0:08:12No matter how many people compliment you, it's not going to take it away.
0:08:12 > 0:08:17You'll feel, or you have felt, that people are just being kind.
0:08:17 > 0:08:20It affects my confidence when I'm out people look over
0:08:20 > 0:08:23and sort of look at me I think, "Oh, God, what are they looking at?"
0:08:23 > 0:08:27It's never the shoes, it's always directly at the hair.
0:08:27 > 0:08:28Hair is made from keratin,
0:08:28 > 0:08:33the same material that makes our nails and skin.
0:08:33 > 0:08:36It's one of the toughest materials in our body.
0:08:36 > 0:08:39In fact, all the hairs on our head are strong enough
0:08:39 > 0:08:41to support the weight of two elephants.
0:08:42 > 0:08:45Above our skin, the hair has no living cells
0:08:45 > 0:08:47but deep inside the hair follicle,
0:08:47 > 0:08:49the base of the hair is alive.
0:08:55 > 0:09:00Here, blood vessels transport nutrients so new hairs can form.
0:09:02 > 0:09:05Normally each hair grows for between two and eight years
0:09:05 > 0:09:08before it falls out and is replaced by a new one.
0:09:11 > 0:09:15But on some parts of Ollie's head, this cycle has been disrupted,
0:09:15 > 0:09:17leaving him with bald patches.
0:09:20 > 0:09:22These follicles are on their way out.
0:09:22 > 0:09:26So Ollie's decided to undergo a major surgical procedure -
0:09:26 > 0:09:27a hair transplant.
0:09:28 > 0:09:33At the moment, you can see my hairline is quite far back.
0:09:35 > 0:09:38So I'm hoping that my hairline will come to here
0:09:38 > 0:09:41and all this bit will be filled in.
0:09:41 > 0:09:44Going to transplant this, here, to the front of my head
0:09:44 > 0:09:50so the texture hopefully should be the same from back to front.
0:09:50 > 0:09:53If I could go now and have it done, I'd just have it done.
0:09:53 > 0:09:56I just want to be there now. I'm not nervous at all.
0:09:56 > 0:10:01And even if they had to do something horrific to give me hair
0:10:01 > 0:10:04I'd have it done, because as far as I'm concerned
0:10:04 > 0:10:07I'm not prepared to be miserable for any more years.
0:10:07 > 0:10:09And if something can be done, I just want it done.
0:10:14 > 0:10:17Tonight, Ollie's meeting his mates for a drink.
0:10:17 > 0:10:20I won't go out unless my hair is right!
0:10:20 > 0:10:22This is the ironing process.
0:10:24 > 0:10:29I pull it all out, just to have extra body.
0:10:29 > 0:10:33It makes it easier for me to be able to cover up the bald bits.
0:10:36 > 0:10:38All right, you guys? Hi, you all right?
0:10:38 > 0:10:41I definitely think having a hair transplant will change my life.
0:10:41 > 0:10:43Oh, a gin and tonic, and...
0:10:44 > 0:10:47Ollie's brother, Jo, is 19.
0:10:49 > 0:10:54He's got a receding hairline already but he's had
0:10:54 > 0:10:57basically good training on how to cover these patches up, so...
0:10:57 > 0:11:01He's got this fringe that he never lets me cut off because
0:11:01 > 0:11:07I had a fringe like that when I was 19. Ah, a few more years!
0:11:07 > 0:11:08It doesn't bother me.
0:11:08 > 0:11:10I'd shave me hair off, it doesn't bother me at all.
0:11:12 > 0:11:17Our chromosomes are inside every cell of our body.
0:11:17 > 0:11:19These hold thousands of genes
0:11:19 > 0:11:21that tell our bodies how to develop and function.
0:11:23 > 0:11:27Scientists have discovered many genes that are linked to baldness
0:11:27 > 0:11:30and one of these is passed down from your mother.
0:11:30 > 0:11:33But it's not just men that can inherit baldness.
0:11:33 > 0:11:37And today 5% of hair transplants are carried out on women.
0:11:39 > 0:11:41Seb has got the hairline I really need right now.
0:11:44 > 0:11:46He's got the same granddad as me
0:11:46 > 0:11:49so maybe it could possibly happen to Seb as well.
0:11:49 > 0:11:52See, if I had Seb's hairline, I'd have a full-on quiff,
0:11:52 > 0:11:53I really would.
0:11:53 > 0:11:56I'd be perming this front section here and having a big quiff.
0:11:56 > 0:11:59Look at him, you can't even see a scalp.
0:11:59 > 0:12:00Have you got a scalp?!
0:12:00 > 0:12:04That's the only good thing that comes with my hairline.
0:12:04 > 0:12:05I know I've got a scalp!
0:12:05 > 0:12:09I don't think people see your hair as much as you do.
0:12:09 > 0:12:10I think they do!
0:12:10 > 0:12:13What do you think - blonde or brunette, should I go?
0:12:13 > 0:12:15Bit of both, get some highlights!
0:12:15 > 0:12:17Blonde...
0:12:17 > 0:12:21Or brunette? Brunette?
0:12:21 > 0:12:26- Brunette definitely - it brings out your eyes!- Does it!?
0:12:26 > 0:12:31In a couple of days, Ollie will face his gruelling eight-hour operation.
0:12:31 > 0:12:34It will lift my self-esteem, it will lift my confidence,
0:12:34 > 0:12:37it'll be just be a boost in so many areas that it's worth having done.
0:12:37 > 0:12:41It's something to look forward to. Feels like Christmas, to be honest.
0:12:44 > 0:12:46A recent survey found over 60% of people
0:12:46 > 0:12:48are not happy with their body image.
0:12:48 > 0:12:53I'd say my least favourite part of my body is probably my legs.
0:12:53 > 0:12:55My hairline.
0:12:55 > 0:13:00Probably my thighs, and my bum. And my stomach.
0:13:00 > 0:13:03But what's driving so many of us to do this?
0:13:03 > 0:13:06And I've got a really big head so I can't wear hats.
0:13:06 > 0:13:09People have told me I have a strange-looking nose.
0:13:09 > 0:13:11This part of my chin!
0:13:11 > 0:13:14- There's no hair over there. - There's no hair over there.
0:13:14 > 0:13:15# Just bust a move
0:13:15 > 0:13:18# Huh, huh, yeah... #
0:13:18 > 0:13:21Psychologist Dr Martin Tovee is a body image expert.
0:13:21 > 0:13:24He's with a group of volunteers to see the sort of pressures
0:13:24 > 0:13:28that are making people today feel bad about their body.
0:13:28 > 0:13:32He believes the way in which celebs and models are photographed,
0:13:32 > 0:13:35and even airbrushed can have a massive impact.
0:13:36 > 0:13:40Lots of these really impossibly attractive bodies and faces,
0:13:40 > 0:13:42and they are impossibly attractive,
0:13:42 > 0:13:44because they don't exist in real life -
0:13:44 > 0:13:49it gives you an artificial bar you have to try and reach.
0:13:49 > 0:13:52So you're always going to be striving for this unrealistic ideal.
0:13:52 > 0:13:55And do the volunteers agree?
0:13:55 > 0:13:59I think the media has a big effect on how I feel.
0:13:59 > 0:14:01This magazine has only got, like, models in it.
0:14:04 > 0:14:07You have all these images shoved into you all the time.
0:14:07 > 0:14:09You still aspire to be as perfect as them
0:14:09 > 0:14:12even though you know it's not real.
0:14:12 > 0:14:16I would like to see in magazines pictures that aren't Photoshopped
0:14:16 > 0:14:19but I don't think it will ever happen.
0:14:19 > 0:14:22I just don't think that's the world we live in.
0:14:22 > 0:14:25Younger people tend to be more susceptible to these images
0:14:25 > 0:14:28because everybody's connected up, they have their iPhones,
0:14:28 > 0:14:31they have their Facebook. It's not just celebrities these days.
0:14:31 > 0:14:36A lot of people are having their Facebook profile Photoshopped.
0:14:36 > 0:14:39Less than 5% of people can naturally attain the body ideals
0:14:39 > 0:14:41being portrayed in the media today.
0:14:44 > 0:14:46You can't achieve these bodies in real life
0:14:46 > 0:14:50other than by artificially changing your body
0:14:50 > 0:14:54in a very invasive and sometimes quite dangerous way.
0:14:56 > 0:15:00While airbrushing affects how we feel about our own body,
0:15:00 > 0:15:03research shows there are many things that make us more attractive to others.
0:15:03 > 0:15:05You might think looks are number one
0:15:05 > 0:15:09but Martin is going to carry out an experiment to see what else counts.
0:15:11 > 0:15:13If you're interested in what makes someone attractive,
0:15:13 > 0:15:16it's not just their simple appearance,
0:15:16 > 0:15:20it's their behaviour, it's their personality that's important, too.
0:15:24 > 0:15:28And to test this out, Martin's got a trick up his sleeve.
0:15:28 > 0:15:31Two of the volunteers are planted - they're actors -
0:15:31 > 0:15:32and later on
0:15:32 > 0:15:36they're going to help find out whether personality really counts
0:15:36 > 0:15:38when it comes to attractiveness.
0:15:38 > 0:15:40He said Mikela has oil-drum thighs.
0:15:40 > 0:15:42He was horrible.
0:15:46 > 0:15:49It's not just our body shape we are unhappy with.
0:15:49 > 0:15:51Many of us even want to change our colour.
0:15:53 > 0:15:56Today, 70% of Brits want a tan.
0:15:59 > 0:16:01Tans have been fashionable since the '50s...
0:16:05 > 0:16:09..when film star Brigitte Bardot brought the bronzed look to the silver screen.
0:16:17 > 0:16:22In the '80s, sunbeds and cheap flights made the tan available to everyone.
0:16:24 > 0:16:27But as tanning soared, so did the dangers...
0:16:27 > 0:16:32and today over 1,600 Brits die each year from skin cancer.
0:16:32 > 0:16:34Yet we still love to tan
0:16:34 > 0:16:39and some people will go to extreme measures to get brown...fast.
0:16:44 > 0:16:48In three weeks, 20-year-old Niall is going to Ibiza with his mates
0:16:48 > 0:16:50and wants to bronze up before he goes.
0:16:50 > 0:16:54Appearance is important to everyone. I think everyone makes an effort.
0:16:54 > 0:16:57So, if you look good, then you will feel more confident.
0:17:02 > 0:17:06His biggest worry is looking pale while he's out there.
0:17:07 > 0:17:09Usually when I'm in the sun I go a bit pink.
0:17:09 > 0:17:11Er, I'm not the best tanner.
0:17:11 > 0:17:14But I want to look brown whilst I'm on holiday.
0:17:15 > 0:17:18And to kick-start his tan, Niall is going to inject himself with
0:17:18 > 0:17:23Melanotan 2, a synthetic hormone that darkens the skin.
0:17:23 > 0:17:26When I first heard of tanning injections,
0:17:26 > 0:17:27it was through friends,
0:17:27 > 0:17:30cos a lot friends have done tanning injection before
0:17:30 > 0:17:34and I did my own research on 'em and found a few websites with 'em on.
0:17:36 > 0:17:37The tanning drug Niall is using
0:17:37 > 0:17:40has not been officially tested for safety in the UK,
0:17:40 > 0:17:42so it's illegal to sell.
0:17:42 > 0:17:45There is, though, no law against buying the unregulated injections.
0:17:45 > 0:17:49I'm doing the course before I go on holiday to get a tan,
0:17:49 > 0:17:51but also to boost myself, like,
0:17:51 > 0:17:53so when I'm over there I'll be able to get a tan easier.
0:17:59 > 0:18:02Our skin has two main layers - the outer part
0:18:02 > 0:18:04acts as protection from the outside world,
0:18:04 > 0:18:07while the inner part is where our nerves, sweat glands
0:18:07 > 0:18:08and hair follicles are.
0:18:11 > 0:18:15And the outer layer of skin is where our tan begins.
0:18:18 > 0:18:23Here, dark microscopic granules of melanin give skin its colour.
0:18:24 > 0:18:29The more melanin you have in your skin, the darker you look.
0:18:29 > 0:18:32This outer layer is constantly falling off as dead skin,
0:18:32 > 0:18:36to be renewed with new cells from underneath...
0:18:36 > 0:18:39so our tan only lasts a few weeks.
0:18:44 > 0:18:47Tonight, Niall's going out with his mates in Huddersfield.
0:18:47 > 0:18:50- We're here!- All right, guys? - All right, guys?
0:18:50 > 0:18:53- How do? All right?- All right?
0:18:53 > 0:18:55People just want to be browner, don't they?
0:18:55 > 0:18:57Everyone wants to be brown. It's the same...
0:18:57 > 0:18:59You buy a bottle, you rub it in.
0:19:01 > 0:19:03That's the girl's option, but the guy's option,
0:19:03 > 0:19:07it's seen as quite camp if you wear fake tan, sort of thing.
0:19:07 > 0:19:08I wouldn't get a spray tan.
0:19:08 > 0:19:10LAUGHTER
0:19:10 > 0:19:13- It stinks. Fake tan stinks. - It's a ball-ache, isn't it?
0:19:13 > 0:19:16Especially if you get it wrong and you get all streaky
0:19:16 > 0:19:18and you're on a night out and it starts raining.
0:19:18 > 0:19:20You look like a complete dickhead!
0:19:20 > 0:19:25So a lot of people think that it's better to take Melanotan
0:19:25 > 0:19:27because it's a more natural look.
0:19:27 > 0:19:30If people do sort of spray-tan, especially if you're male,
0:19:30 > 0:19:32it's sort of frowned upon, I think.
0:19:32 > 0:19:37Niall's mate Alex has used tanning injections before.
0:19:37 > 0:19:40Did you get any side effects when you used it?
0:19:40 > 0:19:42Not really, I mean...
0:19:42 > 0:19:47I got a bit of extra...extra sort of moles on my skin.
0:19:47 > 0:19:49Moles can be a precursor to cancer.
0:19:49 > 0:19:53When you actually did the injections, does it hurt at all?
0:19:53 > 0:19:59My ex-girlfriend who did 'em, she actually said that she felt sick.
0:20:01 > 0:20:03ALL CHEER
0:20:05 > 0:20:08Melanotan users have reported nausea,
0:20:08 > 0:20:10darker moles and vomiting.
0:20:10 > 0:20:11Yeah!
0:20:16 > 0:20:18And, as it hasn't been scientifically tested,
0:20:18 > 0:20:21there could be more dangerous side effects.
0:20:25 > 0:20:28Once the drug is injected into the bloodstream,
0:20:28 > 0:20:31there is no way it can be expelled from the body
0:20:31 > 0:20:35and it's not known how long it stays in your system.
0:20:35 > 0:20:38Needles can also put users at risk of infections
0:20:38 > 0:20:39such as HIV and hepatitis.
0:20:44 > 0:20:46In September 2012,
0:20:46 > 0:20:48Melanotan user Jenna Vickers
0:20:48 > 0:20:50collapsed and died at a tanning salon.
0:20:51 > 0:20:55The exact cause of her death is not yet known.
0:21:03 > 0:21:06Hairdresser Ollie is on his way to have a hair transplant.
0:21:08 > 0:21:10I don't feel nervous at all about it to be honest.
0:21:10 > 0:21:13Um, I'm a great believer in what will be will be
0:21:13 > 0:21:15so, it' something I really want done.
0:21:15 > 0:21:18I've been going bald since I was like 19, so I'm quite excited, really.
0:21:18 > 0:21:24I've got Facebook and Twitter so I'm sure I'll be... have plenty to do.
0:21:24 > 0:21:29Ollie is one of the 20% of guys that start going bald in their teens.
0:21:29 > 0:21:33In 2011, Wayne Rooney had a hair transplant
0:21:33 > 0:21:35rumoured to cost £30,000.
0:21:37 > 0:21:39His operation, and other celebs like him,
0:21:39 > 0:21:41have made hair transplants less of a taboo
0:21:41 > 0:21:46and they are now one of fasting-growing cosmetic procedures for men today.
0:21:47 > 0:21:48Good morning, Ollie.
0:21:48 > 0:21:51- Morning.- How are you?- Yeah. - How are you feeling?
0:21:51 > 0:21:52Yeah, fine.
0:21:52 > 0:21:55You're happy with the hairline where it finishes?
0:21:55 > 0:21:57Ollie and his surgeon, Harris Haseeb,
0:21:57 > 0:22:01have to agree exactly where his transplanted hair will go.
0:22:01 > 0:22:05Yeah, I quite like that, yeah. I just would like a few more hairs there.
0:22:05 > 0:22:09This receding... It's not receding, it's natural.
0:22:09 > 0:22:12I'd rather it be a little bit more straight, but not all the way round
0:22:12 > 0:22:14so it's like, "Oh, look at him and his straight hairline."
0:22:14 > 0:22:16But I want it to be a little bit more...
0:22:16 > 0:22:18If you bring it forward, it becomes feminine.
0:22:18 > 0:22:20Obviously, I don't want to look like a transvestite.
0:22:20 > 0:22:22I want to look like I'm still a boy,
0:22:22 > 0:22:23- but I'm...- What I'm saying is
0:22:23 > 0:22:27I think you have lost a lot, especially on this side, the temples,
0:22:27 > 0:22:28and I think we should address that.
0:22:32 > 0:22:36Men can begin the balding process almost as soon as puberty kicks in.
0:22:36 > 0:22:40At this time, the testicles pump the sex hormone testosterone
0:22:40 > 0:22:42all around the body.
0:22:43 > 0:22:44Are you happy with that?
0:22:44 > 0:22:45Yeah.
0:22:50 > 0:22:52As testosterone enters the scalp,
0:22:52 > 0:22:55it is converted to the chemical DHT,
0:22:55 > 0:22:58which locks onto receptors on the hair follicles.
0:23:00 > 0:23:03Ollie has more receptors on his hair follicles
0:23:03 > 0:23:06than men who don't go bald.
0:23:06 > 0:23:08For reasons not known,
0:23:08 > 0:23:12the DHT triggers his hair follicles to shrink.
0:23:12 > 0:23:16As they get smaller, they produce weaker, shorter hairs.
0:23:18 > 0:23:21Within a few years, these have shrunk so much
0:23:21 > 0:23:22they are barely visible.
0:23:27 > 0:23:31But the hair at the back of Ollie's head doesn't have this problem.
0:23:34 > 0:23:37So these hair follicles will be implanted,
0:23:37 > 0:23:40one by one, in the bald patches.
0:23:42 > 0:23:44- Ollie?- Yeah.- You're going to feel a few sharp scratches.
0:23:44 > 0:23:48- Going to feel like bee stings. - Yeah, that's fine. Yeah, not a problem.
0:23:48 > 0:23:50A local anaesthetic totally numbs the area,
0:23:50 > 0:23:54so the surgeon can cut out a strip from the back of Ollie's scalp.
0:23:54 > 0:23:56Not one for the squeamish!
0:23:56 > 0:24:01All right, I'm going to start making incisions now as I start scoring.
0:24:01 > 0:24:03So how thick's the strip that you're taking?
0:24:03 > 0:24:06It's about 18 centimetres. It's about one centimetre wide.
0:24:06 > 0:24:10Just enough to go down to the fat, just see the fat and that's it,
0:24:10 > 0:24:11because then you have nerves...
0:24:11 > 0:24:14- Can you suck some of the fat out? - Ha, wishful thinking!
0:24:14 > 0:24:16WOMAN LAUGHS
0:24:16 > 0:24:17That's such a weird sensation.
0:24:17 > 0:24:22- It feels like my scalp's being pulled off.- It's not, though.- No, I know.
0:24:23 > 0:24:27I'll expect a massage in a minute as well, so when you're ready...
0:24:27 > 0:24:29- Very demanding, isn't he?- I know!
0:24:29 > 0:24:32To be honest, I'm just enjoying this situation...right now.
0:24:32 > 0:24:36I'm tweeting the pictures to people. Facebook's going wild.
0:24:38 > 0:24:41Now, I'm going to put it on that tray first and...
0:24:43 > 0:24:46I expect to get about 1,800-2,000 from that strip.
0:24:46 > 0:24:48Hopefully, I'll get more than 1,800
0:24:48 > 0:24:50but that's the least I would want from that strip.
0:24:50 > 0:24:53Right, so if we do an estimate now...
0:24:53 > 0:24:57Next door, Ollie's strip is dissected into individual hair follicles.
0:24:58 > 0:25:03So, from the strip it's going into small slivers like this,
0:25:03 > 0:25:07and then cut around the...the follicle like so.
0:25:11 > 0:25:16To do all the cutting I would say would take between two...two hours.
0:25:17 > 0:25:20Meanwhile, the front of Ollie's head is being prepared with
0:25:20 > 0:25:24hundreds of tiny incisions, where each follicle will be inserted.
0:25:26 > 0:25:29Three hours in and Ollie's hair is finally being
0:25:29 > 0:25:31transplanted into his scalp.
0:25:31 > 0:25:34My hair's going in, it's amazing!
0:25:36 > 0:25:39Might be able to have a French plait after all. You never know.
0:25:42 > 0:25:46As long as I don't have a big shiny head any more, I don't care.
0:25:46 > 0:25:5095 to 97% of these hair follicles will take.
0:25:50 > 0:25:54So these hairs, the hair, will it just keep renewing itself as normal?
0:25:54 > 0:25:57Yeah, it will go through the cycles again
0:25:57 > 0:26:00- and it will keep doing it for the rest of your life.- Cool.
0:26:04 > 0:26:05Some experts warn
0:26:05 > 0:26:08having hair transplants in your early 20s is too young.
0:26:10 > 0:26:12As hair continues to recede,
0:26:12 > 0:26:15the transplanted hair can be surrounded by new bald patches.
0:26:22 > 0:26:24- Hi, have a look.- OK.
0:26:24 > 0:26:29Wow, yeah, what a difference. Yeah, that's brilliant.
0:26:29 > 0:26:33While Ollie can see the marks where the new growth will be, it will
0:26:33 > 0:26:38take months until he knows if his new hair has actually begun to grow.
0:26:38 > 0:26:41- Happy?- Yeah, very happy. Fantastic.
0:26:41 > 0:26:45It's been a completely pain-free procedure.
0:26:45 > 0:26:46I've really enjoyed it.
0:26:46 > 0:26:50And to have a result that you can visibly see as well is also
0:26:50 > 0:26:52nice to see. So, yeah, very pleased.
0:26:59 > 0:27:03Cosmetic procedures are meant to make us more appealing.
0:27:03 > 0:27:07Yet research shows there are many different ways to appear more
0:27:07 > 0:27:08attractive to others.
0:27:08 > 0:27:11Generally, I look for personality more.
0:27:11 > 0:27:13For the first impression, the face is most important.
0:27:13 > 0:27:15I want someone that is going to make me laugh.
0:27:15 > 0:27:18Honestly, 100%, it's the personality!
0:27:18 > 0:27:22Scientist Martin Tovee is carrying out a psychology experiment to test
0:27:22 > 0:27:27if personality really does influence how we judge someone's appearance.
0:27:29 > 0:27:30How attractive you find someone
0:27:30 > 0:27:33is not just down to physical appearance.
0:27:33 > 0:27:35A lot of it is about behaviour and personality.
0:27:35 > 0:27:38And what we're trying to find out. is to what extent does this
0:27:38 > 0:27:40actually hold true?
0:27:42 > 0:27:46Unknown to the group of 20 volunteers, two of them are plants.
0:27:48 > 0:27:50Thomas and Rhys are actually actors.
0:27:51 > 0:27:56During the experiment, Thomas has been asked to be mean and selfish
0:27:56 > 0:27:59and Rhys, friendly and kind.
0:28:02 > 0:28:05A week earlier, everyone was asked to rate how attractive
0:28:05 > 0:28:09they found 40 random faces including Rhys and Thomas's.
0:28:11 > 0:28:13The scores showed how attractive
0:28:13 > 0:28:16they were from their appearance alone.
0:28:21 > 0:28:22Now Rhys and Thomas
0:28:22 > 0:28:26spend the whole day interacting with the other volunteers.
0:28:26 > 0:28:28Nice to meet you too!
0:28:28 > 0:28:31- There are so many students here. - Yeah.
0:28:31 > 0:28:33Rhys made eye contact,
0:28:33 > 0:28:37was interested in other people and smiled a lot.
0:28:37 > 0:28:40- I know.- Hello, Australia...
0:28:40 > 0:28:41Thomas didn't make eye contact,
0:28:41 > 0:28:45wasn't interested in what people said and interrupted them.
0:28:47 > 0:28:49I was asking a question.
0:28:49 > 0:28:53- I didn't hear what you said. - You've had a good time?
0:28:53 > 0:28:55Yeah, I have. A really good time.
0:28:59 > 0:29:01Rhys was a nice guy.
0:29:01 > 0:29:04He was lovely. He was really nice.
0:29:04 > 0:29:07I thought Rhys was a really nice guy, really chatty, lovely.
0:29:07 > 0:29:10Thomas, I really didn't like him towards the end.
0:29:10 > 0:29:13I spilled some water accidentally, and he said, "Oh, what a retard!"
0:29:13 > 0:29:16Oh, you retard.
0:29:16 > 0:29:19- So I was a bit taken aback.- You don't really have to say that to someone.
0:29:19 > 0:29:22Thomas was a little bit strange, I thought, at first,
0:29:22 > 0:29:25being a bit brash and it did affect my opinion of him.
0:29:25 > 0:29:28But did it actually change how attractive people found
0:29:28 > 0:29:30Rhys and Thomas?
0:29:30 > 0:29:36So, what we're going to do is hand out some questionnaires.
0:29:36 > 0:29:40The volunteers are asked to rate each other on attractiveness.
0:29:40 > 0:29:42Scoring on a scale of one to ten
0:29:42 > 0:29:45where one is unattractive, ten is attractive.
0:29:45 > 0:29:50- Look at me.- I can't believe I used that picture. Such a mistake.
0:29:50 > 0:29:52Rhys and Thomas will be scored again
0:29:52 > 0:29:57but this time their behaviour will be taken into account.
0:29:57 > 0:29:59And once the scores have been added up,
0:29:59 > 0:30:02Martin will be revealing some surprising results.
0:30:08 > 0:30:13The number of people having cosmetic surgery is rising by 5% every year
0:30:13 > 0:30:15yet a recent Government report suggests we are not being
0:30:15 > 0:30:19properly advised of the risks that these procedures can carry.
0:30:21 > 0:30:25Claudia Aderotimi was a 20-year-old student from Hackney.
0:30:26 > 0:30:29Her dream was to be a music star like her idol Beyonce
0:30:29 > 0:30:33so she auditioned to be a dancer in hip-hop videos.
0:30:33 > 0:30:37She thought she wasn't being picked because her bum wasn't big enough.
0:30:37 > 0:30:42So, desperate to succeed, in 2011 she secretly went to America
0:30:42 > 0:30:46to have backstreet silicone injections in her buttocks.
0:30:47 > 0:30:50The illegal procedure was carried out in a hotel room
0:30:50 > 0:30:51and went horribly wrong.
0:30:53 > 0:30:56A female experiencing some trouble breathing and some chest pains.
0:30:56 > 0:31:00She was transferred over to Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital.
0:31:00 > 0:31:03Soon after the silicone entered her bloodstream,
0:31:03 > 0:31:06she developed chest pain and struggled for breath.
0:31:07 > 0:31:11Claudia died of a blood clot in the lung hours later.
0:31:16 > 0:31:19Lucy has had body image issues since her teens
0:31:19 > 0:31:22and today she is finally having her breast surgery.
0:31:23 > 0:31:27I feel quite excited. Obviously the nerves have hit in a bit
0:31:27 > 0:31:32cos it's a big thing but I am more excited than anything.
0:31:34 > 0:31:37- Good morning, Lucy. How are you? - Hello. Good, thank you.
0:31:37 > 0:31:41Before the operation, Lucy has to agree with her surgeon,
0:31:41 > 0:31:44Chris Inglefield, what size implants they're going to use.
0:31:44 > 0:31:48In a 3D simulation, she went for the larger D cup
0:31:49 > 0:31:54I preferred the shape from the profile with this one.
0:31:54 > 0:31:57My concern, especially with the left side is that you don't
0:31:57 > 0:32:03have enough tissue to cover the width of the implant.
0:32:03 > 0:32:07There's a bit of a balance between getting that extra
0:32:07 > 0:32:13bit of fullness and what's going to be in your best interests long term.
0:32:13 > 0:32:14OK.
0:32:14 > 0:32:18Whatever size we end up with, you're still going to look fabulous.
0:32:18 > 0:32:21- That is the important bit. - Excellent!
0:32:21 > 0:32:24For all woman having their breasts enlarged, one in five will
0:32:24 > 0:32:27need their implants replaced within ten years.
0:32:29 > 0:32:33In 2012 it was discovered the controversial PIP implants
0:32:33 > 0:32:36were up to six times more likely to rupture.
0:32:36 > 0:32:40These were found to be made from industrial not medical silicone.
0:32:40 > 0:32:45# We don't know what we've been told Toxic PIPs have got to go! #
0:32:45 > 0:32:50And around 47,000 British women had been given them.
0:32:50 > 0:32:53PIP implants have now been banned.
0:32:56 > 0:32:59Now in theatre, Lucy is under general anaesthetic
0:32:59 > 0:33:03for the 45-minute operation.
0:33:03 > 0:33:08She's 24, but some women have surgery as young as 18.
0:33:08 > 0:33:11What we need to make sure is that their breasts have stopped growing,
0:33:11 > 0:33:15so we don't think about breast augmentation at a too young age,
0:33:15 > 0:33:17where they may still be developing.
0:33:17 > 0:33:21So we say 18 to 20 is a reasonable time.
0:33:21 > 0:33:24Most women will have stopped developing their breasts
0:33:24 > 0:33:25at that stage.
0:33:25 > 0:33:27Dr Irvin, are we OK to start?
0:33:27 > 0:33:29- Yeah.- Thank you.
0:33:29 > 0:33:31OK. Just going to get started.
0:33:31 > 0:33:34Incisions are made under each of Lucy's breasts
0:33:34 > 0:33:36so her scars will be hidden.
0:33:37 > 0:33:41Infiltrating local anaesthetic behind the breast
0:33:41 > 0:33:46which will help make sure she's nice and comfortable when she wakes up.
0:33:49 > 0:33:53We're going to dissect the space behind the breast now.
0:33:53 > 0:33:56This is going to be where the implants are going to be placed,
0:33:56 > 0:33:57on this left side.
0:33:57 > 0:34:03One of the main nerves which provide sensation to the nipple area.
0:34:03 > 0:34:04There are three main nerves
0:34:04 > 0:34:07branching out inside a woman's breast and nipple.
0:34:07 > 0:34:11These transmit electrical signals to the brain,
0:34:11 > 0:34:14stimulating breast feeding and sexual pleasure.
0:34:16 > 0:34:20One in seven women find that their nipples are less sensitive or
0:34:20 > 0:34:23completely numb following breast implant surgery,
0:34:23 > 0:34:24due to nerve damage.
0:34:25 > 0:34:29I actually look for that nerve and make sure it's protected
0:34:29 > 0:34:33so she will recover normal sensation once healing occurs.
0:34:34 > 0:34:38To prevent infection, antiseptic liquid is poured over the silicone implants
0:34:38 > 0:34:42and a plastic sleeve stops them from touching Lucy's skin.
0:34:45 > 0:34:49What I say to patients is that there is a small risk that the implants
0:34:49 > 0:34:53can fail, but these implants should last her the rest of her life.
0:34:55 > 0:34:59Lucy's breast implants are placed behind her milk glands and fat
0:34:59 > 0:35:03so they shouldn't affect her ability to breastfeed later in life.
0:35:03 > 0:35:07Sometimes, women with smaller breasts will have their implants
0:35:07 > 0:35:10placed underneath the muscle as well, to look more natural.
0:35:10 > 0:35:13Although this can take longer to recover.
0:35:21 > 0:35:23That's the implant in.
0:35:23 > 0:35:26So we just check and make sure it's sitting smoothly,
0:35:26 > 0:35:28it's in the right place.
0:35:28 > 0:35:30And I think that's a nice size for her,
0:35:30 > 0:35:35she was thinking about going a little bit larger,
0:35:35 > 0:35:37a little bit fuller,
0:35:37 > 0:35:40but I think this is going to give her a very natural lovely
0:35:40 > 0:35:44shape that will keep her happy for many years to come.
0:35:44 > 0:35:49Then we simply close these incisions with a dissolving suture.
0:35:49 > 0:35:53It's a suture which takes about three or four months to dissolve.
0:35:56 > 0:35:58With the operation over,
0:35:58 > 0:36:01Lucy now has to go through several weeks of painful recovery.
0:36:06 > 0:36:09Nearly half of Brits between 16 and 24 have considered
0:36:09 > 0:36:13cosmetic surgery and many are turning to quick fix treatments
0:36:13 > 0:36:15that don't need any recovery time.
0:36:18 > 0:36:21Let's have a quick read. Are there any that you like?
0:36:21 > 0:36:2528-year-old Kirsty from Bolton is getting married in 18 months' time.
0:36:27 > 0:36:31We're getting married on the 8th March 2014, which just
0:36:31 > 0:36:33seems like absolutely ages away.
0:36:36 > 0:36:39- 'It's practically planned isn't it? - Yeah.- It's pretty much all planned.
0:36:39 > 0:36:41Cos I've been nagging him to propose for years!
0:36:41 > 0:36:44It's been the most prepared wedding ever.
0:36:44 > 0:36:47All that's left is to choose the rings...
0:36:47 > 0:36:50I think something like this might look a bit too bling next to mine.
0:36:50 > 0:36:53It depends whether or not you want something just to
0:36:53 > 0:36:55sort of be a little more understated.
0:36:55 > 0:36:56I do like that.
0:36:58 > 0:37:01..and decide if she should get Botox for the big day.
0:37:01 > 0:37:04I'd possibly consider having Botox
0:37:04 > 0:37:09but only because I just want to look my best on my wedding day,
0:37:09 > 0:37:11I don't want to look old.
0:37:11 > 0:37:13I would have preferred her to have it later on in life
0:37:13 > 0:37:17but there's a reason for having it, and that's the wedding.
0:37:21 > 0:37:25Today, Botox is the world's most popular cosmetic procedure.
0:37:28 > 0:37:31But it was originally discovered as a cause of food poisoning.
0:37:35 > 0:37:39In fact, Botox's full name, botulinum toxin,
0:37:39 > 0:37:41means sausage poison in Latin.
0:37:43 > 0:37:44Just five litres of pure Botox
0:37:44 > 0:37:47could paralyse and kill the entire human race.
0:37:52 > 0:37:54In the early '90s, Botox was accidentally
0:37:54 > 0:37:58found to reduce wrinkles by paralysing facial muscles.
0:38:00 > 0:38:01Last year alone,
0:38:01 > 0:38:05over a billion pounds was spent on this magic wrinkle cure.
0:38:12 > 0:38:14Before Kirsty dives into Botox,
0:38:14 > 0:38:17she's having a face scan to find out what's causing her wrinkles.
0:38:19 > 0:38:22Hello, Kirsty, I'm Alison. I'm doing your treatment today.
0:38:22 > 0:38:24- Hi, nice to meet you.- Just follow me this way.
0:38:29 > 0:38:33The machine detects any damage under the surface of Kirsty's skin.
0:38:33 > 0:38:35Close madam's eyes. Thanks very much.
0:38:40 > 0:38:43Our skin is kept smooth by a layer of interconnected fibres
0:38:43 > 0:38:47called collagen, found under its surface.
0:38:47 > 0:38:51Over time, this collagen deteriorates, causing the skin
0:38:51 > 0:38:54to fold and wrinkle.
0:38:54 > 0:38:57And up to 90% of these skin changes are due to sun damage.
0:38:58 > 0:39:02Do you ever used sunbeds, Kirsty? Have you ever used them in the past?
0:39:02 > 0:39:06Yes. I used to go on probably four times a week,
0:39:06 > 0:39:07maybe even a bit more.
0:39:07 > 0:39:10So this is the graph and we've got the wrinkles here,
0:39:10 > 0:39:14which isn't very good actually for a lady your age. Not at all.
0:39:14 > 0:39:17If you hadn't been using sunbeds, Kirsty,
0:39:17 > 0:39:20you've have probably had about a quarter percentage of that.
0:39:20 > 0:39:24By protecting her skin in future, Kirsty can stop further damage,
0:39:24 > 0:39:27and help repair some of the harm already done.
0:39:29 > 0:39:31I'll be staying away from the sunbed
0:39:31 > 0:39:33and investing in a very good fake tan, I think.
0:39:33 > 0:39:36- Fake tan, yeah. And when's the wedding?- It's 18 months off.
0:39:36 > 0:39:40OK, so you've got a countdown of 18 months to get yourself sorted.
0:39:41 > 0:39:43Now, she'll also have to decide
0:39:43 > 0:39:46whether she wants Botox before the big day.
0:39:49 > 0:39:5420-year-old Niall wants to bronze up for his holiday to Ibiza.
0:39:54 > 0:40:01His tanning injections have arrived - 1ml vials of Melanotan.
0:40:01 > 0:40:04Now that it's arrived, I'm going to start straight away.
0:40:04 > 0:40:06I'm pretty eager to do it.
0:40:06 > 0:40:10I will be doing 0.1ml a day for about ten days
0:40:10 > 0:40:13and then see how I feel with that first.
0:40:13 > 0:40:15I'm taking it at night so, if I do feel sick,
0:40:15 > 0:40:17which is one of the side effects,
0:40:17 > 0:40:20then I can try to sleep it off.
0:40:20 > 0:40:23Niall is going to inject himself for the first time.
0:40:25 > 0:40:29I feel a bit nervous, but I think anyone injecting themselves would be
0:40:29 > 0:40:32a bit nervous. You're used to getting injections off like a nurse,
0:40:32 > 0:40:35or a doctor. That's what I'm a bit nervous about.
0:40:35 > 0:40:37But I just want to get it over and done with.
0:40:46 > 0:40:48The Melanotan has entered Niall's bloodstream
0:40:48 > 0:40:51and is on its way to his heart.
0:40:52 > 0:40:55From here, it's pumped all around his body to reach every
0:40:55 > 0:40:57part of his skin.
0:40:59 > 0:41:01But it also goes to his brain,
0:41:01 > 0:41:03where it can cause unpleasant side effects.
0:41:05 > 0:41:07Within a few hours,
0:41:07 > 0:41:10Niall could start to feel his body reacting to the drug.
0:41:12 > 0:41:15It's about one o'clock and I still haven't been to sleep yet.
0:41:15 > 0:41:17I feel like I have an empty stomach
0:41:17 > 0:41:20and lost my appetite. I've got a bit of a headache as well which
0:41:20 > 0:41:24is stopping me from sleeping. I'm going to try and get some sleep now.
0:41:29 > 0:41:31To kick-start the tanning drug,
0:41:31 > 0:41:34Niall will have to use sunbeds over the next few days.
0:41:39 > 0:41:42'I'm hoping to achieve a decent tan. I reckon I'll go fairly dark.
0:41:42 > 0:41:46'Darker than I would do. I won't be going pink as usual.'
0:41:46 > 0:41:49But I'm just going to hope for the best.
0:41:55 > 0:41:59Sunbeds and natural sunshine produce powerful ultra-violet rays
0:41:59 > 0:42:04that penetrate the skin and damage the cells.
0:42:04 > 0:42:08Niall's body is responding to the UV rays by triggering
0:42:08 > 0:42:11the release of melanin, attempting to protect his skin from damage.
0:42:21 > 0:42:25UV rays in some sunbeds can be more than ten times stronger than
0:42:25 > 0:42:30the midday sun and can increase skin cancer risks by 25%.
0:42:33 > 0:42:35The World Health Organisation
0:42:35 > 0:42:39has now put sunbeds in the same cancer risk category as cigarettes.
0:42:44 > 0:42:45In Niall's skin,
0:42:45 > 0:42:48the UV rays also act on the injected drug, triggering
0:42:48 > 0:42:53his cells to produce even more melanin, making his tan even darker.
0:42:57 > 0:43:01'I've heard good stuff about it, so I reckon it will be better than
0:43:01 > 0:43:03'when I'm usually on holiday.'
0:43:03 > 0:43:06I do reckon it'll be the darkest I've ever been, yeah.
0:43:11 > 0:43:15Lucy is coming round after her breast operation and starting
0:43:15 > 0:43:19to feel some of the side-effects of the general anaesthetic.
0:43:20 > 0:43:24I feel really tired, I'm struggling to keep my eyes open,
0:43:24 > 0:43:27but other than that I feel a little bit tight on my chest,
0:43:27 > 0:43:31a little bit tender, a little bit shivery as well,
0:43:31 > 0:43:34I don't particularly feel cold, but I am shivery
0:43:34 > 0:43:35and just extremely tired.
0:43:37 > 0:43:40Six hours later, Lucy is ready to go home
0:43:40 > 0:43:43but will feel tender for several weeks.
0:43:45 > 0:43:48It's been four days since her operation.
0:43:48 > 0:43:54I actually felt horrendous the next day. I was feeling really dizzy
0:43:54 > 0:43:57and really sicky and I was actually sick quite a few times
0:43:57 > 0:44:00which for me is really rare.
0:44:00 > 0:44:03I'm never normally sick. I couldn't eat all day.
0:44:03 > 0:44:08The thought of food made me feel horrendous.
0:44:08 > 0:44:10And that was a pretty awful day.
0:44:10 > 0:44:12So, it's Friday today
0:44:12 > 0:44:15and I just thought I'd show everybody how my scars are doing.
0:44:15 > 0:44:17Well, you can't see my scars, it would be more the bruising.
0:44:17 > 0:44:19Let me show you from the side.
0:44:22 > 0:44:24They feel really swollen here.
0:44:26 > 0:44:30Really swollen here. They're still quite numb underneath.
0:44:30 > 0:44:32Can't really feel anything at the moment.
0:44:32 > 0:44:34But otherwise I'm really happy.
0:44:37 > 0:44:40Two weeks later, it's time for Lucy's check-up.
0:44:44 > 0:44:47So, if I could get you to come on the bed.
0:44:47 > 0:44:51So, I'm just going to clean some of the dressings off here
0:44:51 > 0:44:54and let you have a peek of what the sutures look like.
0:44:58 > 0:45:02- Tell me when you can see. - Yeah, I can see.- Yeah?
0:45:02 > 0:45:05- You can barely see it. - That's the marking there.
0:45:05 > 0:45:08- They look good, they're really small. - It looks really good.
0:45:08 > 0:45:14- So you should be absolutely fine. - OK.- Yeah?- Excellent.- Good.
0:45:14 > 0:45:16I feel really good
0:45:16 > 0:45:20and seeing the scars today, I'm really happy with everything.
0:45:20 > 0:45:22So, so far, so good.
0:45:22 > 0:45:26- OK, Lucy, see you.- See you soon. Thank you. Bye.
0:45:26 > 0:45:29While Lucy's scars are healing well, it will still take several
0:45:29 > 0:45:34months for the muscle and tissue underneath to fully mend.
0:45:40 > 0:45:42Boob jobs and Botox are among
0:45:42 > 0:45:45the top three procedures women are having.
0:45:48 > 0:45:51And 28-year-old Kirsty from Bolton
0:45:51 > 0:45:53has decided to go ahead with her Botox.
0:45:55 > 0:45:57'I'd like to have it done quite far advance of the wedding'
0:45:57 > 0:46:01just because you hear stories about droopy eyes, droopy lips,
0:46:01 > 0:46:03stuff like that.
0:46:03 > 0:46:05Can you imagine walking down the aisle with droopy eyes?
0:46:05 > 0:46:09That wouldn't be a good look, really, would it?
0:46:09 > 0:46:12Side effects of Botox can also include bruising and
0:46:12 > 0:46:15if not injected properly can cause problems with double vision,
0:46:15 > 0:46:17eating and speaking.
0:46:20 > 0:46:23In July 2012, Botox guidelines were changed,
0:46:23 > 0:46:28so you now need a consultation with a doctor to get a prescription.
0:46:32 > 0:46:34How are you feeling?
0:46:34 > 0:46:36A bit nervous, but excited.
0:46:37 > 0:46:39So we're treating your crow's-feet.
0:46:41 > 0:46:44Our facial muscles move thousands of times a day,
0:46:44 > 0:46:47etching lines into our skin.
0:46:48 > 0:46:53Botox paralyses the muscles and stops the lines being reinforced.
0:46:54 > 0:46:57If you can just smile for me. I'm just going to make sure
0:46:57 > 0:47:00I'm 1cm away from the orbital rim.
0:47:02 > 0:47:04You'll just feel a sharp scratch.
0:47:06 > 0:47:09That feels really strange.
0:47:11 > 0:47:16The Botox is injected into the muscle around Kirsty's eye,
0:47:16 > 0:47:19targeting the tissue.
0:47:19 > 0:47:21And smile again.
0:47:23 > 0:47:26When we smile, nerves trigger the muscle fibres round the mouth
0:47:26 > 0:47:27and eyes to contract.
0:47:35 > 0:47:37When it goes in you can, like, feel it.
0:47:37 > 0:47:39It doesn't hurt though. It's all right.
0:47:41 > 0:47:43Where the Botox is injected,
0:47:43 > 0:47:47it blocks the connection between her nerves and muscles.
0:47:48 > 0:47:51As a result, the muscle fibres near her eye never receive
0:47:51 > 0:47:53the signal to contract.
0:47:56 > 0:47:57Within a few days,
0:47:57 > 0:48:01part of Kirsty's face will be paralysed for up to three months.
0:48:01 > 0:48:03Enjoy your Botox!
0:48:03 > 0:48:06- See you!- See you in two weeks. - Thank you very much. Bye.
0:48:17 > 0:48:21Two weeks later, and the Botox has fully kicked in.
0:48:21 > 0:48:25'I started to notice it about three days after, really.
0:48:25 > 0:48:29'I just smiled in the mirror and I just had nothing on the side,
0:48:29 > 0:48:32'no kind of crow's-feet on the side of my face at all.'
0:48:32 > 0:48:36Right, see what do you think of that as a whole finished look.
0:48:36 > 0:48:38Yeah, that looks good. I like that.
0:48:44 > 0:48:47- Hi.- Hi, how's it going?- Do you like the make-up?- Yeah. It's lovely.
0:48:47 > 0:48:50Thank you. Natural, isn't it? Like, not overly...
0:48:50 > 0:48:53- It looks really nice, yeah.- Yeah. - Really nice.
0:48:53 > 0:48:55Noticeably different straightaway.
0:48:55 > 0:48:59She was pretty anyway so... Are you happy with it as well?
0:48:59 > 0:49:03Yeah, I really like it. I think it looks really nice.
0:49:03 > 0:49:04Back at the psychology experiment
0:49:04 > 0:49:08and Martin Tovee has been testing a group of volunteers to see
0:49:08 > 0:49:12if personality really counts when it comes to judging attractiveness.
0:49:12 > 0:49:15He recruited two actors to help him.
0:49:15 > 0:49:17Nice to meet you too.
0:49:17 > 0:49:19So many students here.
0:49:19 > 0:49:22And the results are now in.
0:49:22 > 0:49:24Now, we haven't been entirely honest with you.
0:49:24 > 0:49:29Two of you are not actually volunteers. Two of you are actors.
0:49:29 > 0:49:31Tom and Rhys, would you like to step forward?
0:49:34 > 0:49:36Tom and Rhys have been playing a part.
0:49:36 > 0:49:39One of them has been nice, friendly, outgoing.
0:49:39 > 0:49:41Everything I said was true.
0:49:41 > 0:49:45One of them was being a bit surly.
0:49:45 > 0:49:46I'm not an arsehole! Honestly.
0:49:46 > 0:49:49He said that Mikela had oil-drum thighs!
0:49:51 > 0:49:54And how did this impact on the results?
0:49:54 > 0:49:57What we found was the nice guy
0:49:57 > 0:50:01scored significantly higher on the second presentation,
0:50:01 > 0:50:03when you knew something about him.
0:50:03 > 0:50:05Personality counts.
0:50:05 > 0:50:07That's a rule of life, really.
0:50:07 > 0:50:11Yeah, you just don't judge somebody on how they look. It's like...
0:50:11 > 0:50:14With his personality taken into account, Rhys's score
0:50:14 > 0:50:18for attractiveness went up by over 20%.
0:50:18 > 0:50:22These kinds of results show that how you judge someone,
0:50:22 > 0:50:24even if you think you're just judging them
0:50:24 > 0:50:27on their physical characteristics, you can't exclude their
0:50:27 > 0:50:32personality and behaviour. You find the nice person more attractive.
0:50:32 > 0:50:37You find the unpleasant person less attractive. People like smiles.
0:50:37 > 0:50:41I did score him low because I thought he was horrible.
0:50:41 > 0:50:44The chirpy guy got more points, definitely.
0:50:44 > 0:50:47You can spend thousands of pounds changing your body
0:50:47 > 0:50:48but these results show that you can
0:50:48 > 0:50:51appear far more attractive to people just by being nice.

0:51:09 > 0:51:12and he's at Gay Pride in Brighton.

0:51:24 > 0:51:27'For the first month it was quite uncomfortable to sleep and stuff,
0:51:27 > 0:51:28'but it's fine now.'
0:51:28 > 0:51:31I don't feel any pain. All the sensation has come back in my head.
0:51:31 > 0:51:34It was quite numb at first where the scar was and obviously at the top
0:51:34 > 0:51:38of my head here where I had all the grafts but, no, absolutely fine.
0:51:38 > 0:51:41..and his new hair is just beginning to grow.
0:51:42 > 0:51:45I can see very, very tiny hairs growing now
0:51:45 > 0:51:47but it's a real waiting game.
0:51:47 > 0:51:50I think it's getting denser here, cos I can feel that growing
0:51:50 > 0:51:53and then there's odd hairs growing around, and my head's quite itchy,
0:51:53 > 0:51:57like there's hairs waiting to break through the skin.
0:51:57 > 0:52:00Ollie's new follicles have now reconnected to the blood
0:52:00 > 0:52:02supply in his scalp.
0:52:03 > 0:52:07The blood brings the nutrients needed to grow the hair.
0:52:07 > 0:52:09The follicles slowly come back to life,

0:52:25 > 0:52:26have it done.
0:52:26 > 0:52:28It's something that I really wanted.
0:52:28 > 0:52:30Something that's going to enhance my confidence.

0:53:09 > 0:53:13Try 32F! Literally. Absolute shocker.
0:53:13 > 0:53:18But how do you feel about that? Considering you were expecting a C.
0:53:18 > 0:53:20Well, I'm chuffed cos obviously I did say to him.
0:53:20 > 0:53:23- I was debating, wasn't I, wanting go bigger?- Yeah.
0:53:23 > 0:53:27So, I'm pleased I did it, I'm pleased I took his advice and never went
0:53:27 > 0:53:33any bigger, cos I think I'd struggle to get bras now. So, I am pleased.
0:53:33 > 0:53:36One woman said well you've got your money's worth, which is very true.
0:53:36 > 0:53:38You definitely have, that's amazing!
0:53:39 > 0:53:42And, for now, Lucy is more confident in her appearance.

0:54:05 > 0:54:09and a bit of pain I've been through, it really has all been worth it.

0:54:24 > 0:54:27It's like, we've been here for three days, I've put sun cream on twice
0:54:27 > 0:54:30- and I haven't burnt. - You are browner, yeah.
0:54:30 > 0:54:33The way that you look, obviously you're going to be more

0:54:36 > 0:54:38And stuff like that.
0:54:38 > 0:54:42It does build your self-confidence.
0:54:42 > 0:54:45Everything looks better with a tan as well so...
0:54:45 > 0:54:47Especially when it's summer.

0:55:06 > 0:55:08I had a bit of trouble at work,

0:55:42 > 0:55:45More young people than ever are changing the way they look,
0:55:45 > 0:55:47by going under the knife and needle.
