0:00:02 > 0:00:03In the UK, 2,000 babies are born every day.

0:00:03 > 0:00:05Is that nice?

0:00:05 > 0:00:09Being pregnant is one of the most exciting times in a woman's life.

0:00:09 > 0:00:12- She's got a little chin. - Oh, my God!

0:00:12 > 0:00:16You are rested and healthy, ready for the joys of parenthood, right?

0:00:16 > 0:00:20Wrong. 20% of women smoke during pregnancy.

0:00:20 > 0:00:23It's got nothing to do with anybody else what I do.

0:00:23 > 0:00:25But everyone is entitled to their opinion.

0:00:25 > 0:00:2835% continue to drink.

0:00:28 > 0:00:32The only thing I need to meditate on is a Marlboro Light and a glass of Pinot.

0:00:32 > 0:00:34Stick your meditation up your arse.

0:00:34 > 0:00:36And one in five pregnant women are obese.

0:00:36 > 0:00:40A portion of chips does it, fills a little hole until breakfast time.

0:00:40 > 0:00:45Are these women putting their babies in danger before they've even been born?

0:00:45 > 0:00:48This year we took 18 misbehaving mums-to-be

0:00:48 > 0:00:51and paired them with a crack team of specialist midwives.

0:00:51 > 0:00:53Get one up there and one up there.

0:00:53 > 0:00:57Our expert midwives gave these wayward women a wake-up call they wouldn't forget.

0:00:57 > 0:01:02Every single cigarette that you have is like squeezing the cord.

0:01:02 > 0:01:04It will shorten your own life.

0:01:04 > 0:01:09The mums-to-be attempted to embrace their new healthy lifestyles.

0:01:09 > 0:01:13- What's a russet? - That is an apple, they're nice. They are, like, proper, off a tree.

0:01:13 > 0:01:16Squat.

0:01:16 > 0:01:18I'm aware that you're not used to a gym.

0:01:18 > 0:01:22Tonight, some of our girls look back on their pregnancy.

0:01:22 > 0:01:27Midwife Lisa will see if they've stuck to their healthy habits now they are new mums.

0:01:27 > 0:01:29It changed my health and my fitness.

0:01:29 > 0:01:32Maisie is a bouncing, healthy little girl.

0:01:32 > 0:01:34- Have you enjoyed it? - I have enjoyed it, yeah.

0:01:34 > 0:01:38I think it's been a very sobering experience!

0:01:38 > 0:01:41We discover that motherhood has been tough for some.

0:01:41 > 0:01:45It was very, very, very worrying. 50-50 that when she came out,

0:01:45 > 0:01:48she wouldn't make it through the next 24 hours.

0:01:48 > 0:01:51My job primarily is to save babies' lives.

0:01:58 > 0:02:02The first girl Lisa is going to visit is new mum Ceri-Ann,

0:02:02 > 0:02:05who was addicted to cigarettes.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12With two months to her due date,

0:02:12 > 0:02:17her baby bump wasn't big enough to get in the way of her addiction.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20Morning. Can I have 10 Lambert, please?

0:02:20 > 0:02:23That's 3.05, please. Thank you.

0:02:23 > 0:02:29My favourite fag of the day is after I've eaten food. It is the best.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32If someone gets up every single day and has a cup of coffee,

0:02:32 > 0:02:38and can't function without it... that's what it's like for a smoker.

0:02:38 > 0:02:42I can't get up, I can't function without my fag.

0:02:42 > 0:02:46Ceri-Ann's fiance Ben was also a hardcore addict,

0:02:46 > 0:02:48sparking up at least 20 times a day.

0:02:48 > 0:02:52Within two seconds of getting in the park and she has a poo!

0:02:54 > 0:02:57She successfully quit for the rest of her pregnancy.

0:02:57 > 0:03:0112 weeks ago, Ceri-Ann gave birth to a baby girl.

0:03:01 > 0:03:0470% of women who kick the habit while pregnant,

0:03:04 > 0:03:06go back to smoking when the baby is born.

0:03:06 > 0:03:10And Lisa's on a mission to find out if Ceri-Ann is still off the fags.

0:03:14 > 0:03:20- Hello. - Hello! How nice to see you! You are looking fab!

0:03:20 > 0:03:24And this must be Maisie-Lee! How gorgeous are you?

0:03:24 > 0:03:28- How old is she now? - 12 weeks today.- 12 weeks today.

0:03:28 > 0:03:32Hello, nice to see you. She is laughing at me!

0:03:32 > 0:03:35- And the labour bit, the delivery, how was that?- Amazing.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37- Really? - No drugs.

0:03:37 > 0:03:40- I've never, ever had anybody say it was amazing before. - I loved it.

0:03:40 > 0:03:45So, tell me, the big question which I'm dying to ask is...

0:03:45 > 0:03:48how have you done with your smoking? Because you quit in pregnancy.

0:03:48 > 0:03:51- Fine. - You have still quit? - Yeah.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54Oh, my God! That is amazing!

0:03:54 > 0:03:57- Oh, well done, you! - I told you I could do it.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00When I was in labour, I thought I wanted one.

0:04:00 > 0:04:07I had a puff, and I was, like, "That is disgusting!" And I spat it at Ben.

0:04:07 > 0:04:09I was, like, "Take it away, I don't like it!" Crying.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14It is a relief that baby Maisie-Lee came into this world smoke free.

0:04:14 > 0:04:20When Ceri-Ann first met Lisa, she was seven months pregnant and on 10 fags a day.

0:04:20 > 0:04:23- Hiya! - Come on in. Nice to see you.

0:04:23 > 0:04:27Ceri-Ann had no idea that her high carbon monoxide levels,

0:04:27 > 0:04:30caused by smoking, were starving her baby of oxygen.

0:04:30 > 0:04:34The reality of it, that is the reality of smoking.

0:04:34 > 0:04:37That is directly affecting your baby.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40Her reading was almost two times above the safe level,

0:04:40 > 0:04:44which put her at a greater risk of premature birth and placental abruption.

0:04:44 > 0:04:47You'll have a few more cigarettes today...

0:04:47 > 0:04:50- I'm not. - You are not? - I'm not.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53I don't want another one now. That's really worried me.

0:04:53 > 0:04:56I'm, like... Certain things worry me, and that's really worried me.

0:04:56 > 0:04:59- You don't want more today? - No.

0:05:05 > 0:05:10What has that done that nothing else has ever managed to do?

0:05:10 > 0:05:14I just feel I could put it in danger. Like, now, at this moment.

0:05:14 > 0:05:17It has made me feel really guilty.

0:05:17 > 0:05:19Ceri-Ann gave up smoking as promised.

0:05:19 > 0:05:23Lisa prescribed her nicotine replacement patches,

0:05:23 > 0:05:25and she looked for support from partner Ben.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28- Promise to quit smoking if I do? - I promise I'll quit smoking.

0:05:28 > 0:05:34- If you quit for a month, I'll quit. - Pinkie promise? - Pinkie promise.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37Her dad also gave her a financial incentive.

0:05:37 > 0:05:41If you have this savings jar, to say you're putting money in this jar,

0:05:41 > 0:05:44we need cigarettes, we'll put money in the jar,

0:05:44 > 0:05:46I'll put a jar over at my house and I'll match it.

0:05:48 > 0:05:51Ceri-Ann gave up even though it was tough.

0:05:51 > 0:05:55If I'm unhappy and stressed, I'm going to want a fag even more.

0:05:55 > 0:06:01I'd rather put a smile on my face and get on with it for my baby's sake.

0:06:01 > 0:06:05And I love my baby more than anything in the world.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08After a month she was still smoke free.

0:06:08 > 0:06:10But Ben hadn't kept his promise.

0:06:10 > 0:06:15Ceri-Ann hoped seeing the baby would be enough to convince him to give up too.

0:06:15 > 0:06:18She is having nicotine withdrawal too!

0:06:18 > 0:06:22See, she's sucking on the placenta like it's a cigarette.

0:06:23 > 0:06:27That's going through my head, the first thing I want is a fag when I get out.

0:06:27 > 0:06:29- Take care, bye-bye.- Cheers.

0:06:29 > 0:06:35I can't believe that didn't make you want to quit. It was so amazing.

0:06:35 > 0:06:38Didn't even that make you want to stop, just seeing her?

0:06:38 > 0:06:41Thinking that was yours, that's your baby, that.

0:06:41 > 0:06:45- That's my baby. How is me smoking going to affect that baby? - Passive smoking.

0:06:45 > 0:06:47When she's born and in front of me, I'll think, yeah,

0:06:47 > 0:06:51this is more of a reason to quit smoking, because she's there.

0:06:53 > 0:06:57Now that baby Maisie-Lee is here, let's hope Ben has kept to his word.

0:06:57 > 0:07:00How do you feel about smoking now, now that you're a smoke-free mum?

0:07:00 > 0:07:04I don't like it. It does my head in. I'm like, "Get over there, stop smoking."

0:07:04 > 0:07:06- So Ben's still smoking? - Yeah.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09OK. That must be pretty tough then?

0:07:09 > 0:07:12I won't let him smoke in the house. He goes out the back.

0:07:12 > 0:07:14I wish he would quit, for her sake.

0:07:14 > 0:07:18When I look at her, I just think, "You could do it for her."

0:07:18 > 0:07:22- It is not fair. It is his choice. - I can smell cigarette smoke.

0:07:22 > 0:07:24- That is Ben. - I can smell it.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27It's coming into the room, isn't it?

0:07:27 > 0:07:30That is really strong, yet you say he smokes outside.

0:07:30 > 0:07:34- Yeah, the back door. - It's coming back into the house.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37- We'll have to have a chat with him, won't we?- Yeah.

0:07:38 > 0:07:42Ben promised Ceri-Ann during pregnancy he would try and give up smoking.

0:07:42 > 0:07:46But he never managed it. I'm hoping now that Ceri-Ann has had the baby,

0:07:46 > 0:07:50he will give up smoking for the sake of his new daughter.

0:07:50 > 0:07:54Lisa may be having words with Ben about his cigarette addiction.

0:08:00 > 0:08:05Our misbehaving mums were subjected to no-nonsense tactics

0:08:05 > 0:08:08by a team of specialist midwives.

0:08:08 > 0:08:11Looking at this, you are not giving your baby what it needs.

0:08:11 > 0:08:15- A packet of crisps, well, that's... No, it's the salt. - Yeah, I know.

0:08:15 > 0:08:19- I feel really bad eating them, but... - Don't buy them then.

0:08:19 > 0:08:21Some accepted our advice.

0:08:21 > 0:08:28Now I know it's the last fag though, it doesn't seem so great.

0:08:28 > 0:08:31That is amazing.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34While others weren't so keen.

0:08:34 > 0:08:37I've never been brought up to eat fruit, so it's, like, why start now?

0:08:37 > 0:08:41I enjoy it, so why should I give up something I enjoy?

0:08:41 > 0:08:44It feels like she's out of control with the whole fitness thing.

0:08:44 > 0:08:48And I'm just thinking, "No, you don't do that. You just push."

0:08:48 > 0:08:51And one even tried to cheat the test.

0:08:51 > 0:08:53- Have you had any cigarettes? - No.

0:08:53 > 0:08:58- You have not had any cigarettes since, what, nine days? - Yeah.

0:09:01 > 0:09:05Now, that's still not a non-smoking reading.

0:09:05 > 0:09:09- What could account for that then? - Beats me.

0:09:13 > 0:09:18Another graduate from the midwife tough-love training programme is bar owner Juliet.

0:09:18 > 0:09:22When we first met her, she had just found out she was pregnant

0:09:22 > 0:09:26and was about to bring her baby into a world of stress.

0:09:26 > 0:09:28This is one of my best friends.

0:09:28 > 0:09:32I used to get through four or five bottles of this comfortably a day.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35I'm hoping and praying the baby is not pickled in any way.

0:09:35 > 0:09:38Even though there was a baby on the way, she had a thriving bar to run.

0:09:38 > 0:09:40Good morning, the lounge.

0:09:40 > 0:09:44You are here 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

0:09:44 > 0:09:46Juliet had cut out drinking and smoking

0:09:46 > 0:09:52but without wine and cigarettes, her stress levels were off the scale.

0:09:52 > 0:09:56My heart's going boom, boom, boom. Somebody give me a Marlboro Light, or I'll smash your face in.

0:09:56 > 0:09:59- Oh, come on, you- BLEEP- penis!

0:09:59 > 0:10:04Mum, you're really stressing me out now, I've got to be honest. Let me just get on with this, please.

0:10:04 > 0:10:06In the past, when I'm really stressed,

0:10:06 > 0:10:09it would literally be quite a vicious attack on the wine.

0:10:09 > 0:10:12So where's my crux now? What do I do?

0:10:12 > 0:10:13It's now six months later.

0:10:13 > 0:10:17Juliet is just days away from giving birth

0:10:17 > 0:10:18and her life has changed.

0:10:18 > 0:10:20To have a big, successful business, bar,

0:10:20 > 0:10:23working till four, five, six in the morning,

0:10:23 > 0:10:28drinking and smoking with your mates is all good fun, but...

0:10:29 > 0:10:36would I change it? No, no. You can keep that. That's done.

0:10:36 > 0:10:40I may be boring now but I like the new, boring me!

0:10:40 > 0:10:45It's much nicer keeping healthy and keeping a nice house

0:10:45 > 0:10:46and something to look forward to.

0:10:51 > 0:10:55This is Juliet's first baby so Lisa is on her way to check

0:10:55 > 0:10:58how the mum-to-be is getting on in the run-up to the birth.

0:11:02 > 0:11:07Hello, Juliet, Hi. How lovely to meet you!

0:11:07 > 0:11:12- I've been so looking forward to seeing you.- Good. You too, come in. - Thank you.

0:11:12 > 0:11:17So, how have you found the pregnancy? Have you enjoyed it?

0:11:17 > 0:11:21I have enjoyed it, yeah. It's been a very sobering experience!

0:11:22 > 0:11:27- Very cleansing experience. - Detoxifying.- Detoxifying, yeah,

0:11:27 > 0:11:31that's a very good word for it. But also...

0:11:31 > 0:11:34I've... I've put on a lot of weight.

0:11:34 > 0:11:38- Well...- But I've enjoyed my food which I haven't done for many,

0:11:38 > 0:11:41many years and I do eat healthily.

0:11:41 > 0:11:44I don't just shove Haribos and cookies down my face.

0:11:44 > 0:11:47But I have enjoyed it, it's been difficult.

0:11:47 > 0:11:49We've had ups and downs during the way,

0:11:49 > 0:11:52- obviously the detox in the beginning was difficult.- Mmm.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55Juliet today is like a new person.

0:11:55 > 0:11:57- Come on, Juliet. - Thank you very much.- Take a seat.

0:11:57 > 0:12:01Back in October, she went to see experienced midwife Alison

0:12:01 > 0:12:04who wanted her to make some changes.

0:12:04 > 0:12:06And what is the state of your drinking?

0:12:06 > 0:12:09Once a week on a Sunday I'll have a glass of red wine.

0:12:09 > 0:12:13You actually should stop. You really shouldn't be drinking within the first trimester.

0:12:13 > 0:12:18There are mixed messages about whether to keep alcohol to a minimum or avoid it altogether.

0:12:18 > 0:12:21Alison's view is no booze is best in the first trimester.

0:12:21 > 0:12:25Because that is the time most of the baby's vital organs and brain

0:12:25 > 0:12:29are formed, so it's absolutely vital.

0:12:29 > 0:12:31Juliet cut out alcohol altogether

0:12:31 > 0:12:34but rejected Alison's other suggestion - to slow down.

0:12:34 > 0:12:36If I'm honest, I haven't done anything.

0:12:36 > 0:12:38Not been able to go to meditation,

0:12:38 > 0:12:42The only thing I need to meditate on right now is a Marlboro Light and a glass of Pinot.

0:12:42 > 0:12:44SHE LAUGHS

0:12:44 > 0:12:45All right?

0:12:45 > 0:12:48You can stick your meditation up your arse.

0:12:48 > 0:12:51And even her sister couldn't get her to listen.

0:12:51 > 0:12:53The drinking always concerned me.

0:12:53 > 0:12:57Do you really reckon that you're going to be able to go the whole nine months?

0:12:57 > 0:13:00I'm not saying completely without alcohol, you can have

0:13:00 > 0:13:03the odd one or two drinks but do you think you'll do it?

0:13:05 > 0:13:09- I won't go out on the lash, if that's what you mean.- No.

0:13:10 > 0:13:13She did eventually give yoga a try.

0:13:13 > 0:13:15Hi, I'm here for the yoga at 12.30.

0:13:15 > 0:13:17I'm afraid you're five minutes late

0:13:17 > 0:13:20and she doesn't like to interrupt a class once it's started.

0:13:20 > 0:13:21That was a bit off, wasn't it?

0:13:21 > 0:13:25I mean, it was only a couple of seconds.

0:13:25 > 0:13:27But her hectic work life got in the way again.

0:13:27 > 0:13:30The thought of on my down time, my resting time

0:13:30 > 0:13:33to go and do some yoga or something isn't in the picture.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36I think you need to give it all a chance because

0:13:36 > 0:13:41I'm convinced that once you start, you will see the effect.

0:13:41 > 0:13:45I know that but the bar does come first because it has to be.

0:13:45 > 0:13:47You really have to have a new priority now

0:13:47 > 0:13:49and it's no longer the bar.

0:13:49 > 0:13:52And it was only when Alison suggested a way to combine

0:13:52 > 0:13:55motherhood with work that things started to change.

0:13:55 > 0:13:58Here's another one, can I give you that, my lovely?

0:13:58 > 0:14:00- This is AJ. - Hi, AJ. How are you?

0:14:02 > 0:14:05See those babies?

0:14:05 > 0:14:07Want one. Ooh, having one!

0:14:07 > 0:14:09SHE LAUGHS

0:14:10 > 0:14:13Since then, Juliet's life has continued to wind down

0:14:13 > 0:14:16and today, things are very different.

0:14:17 > 0:14:20She's taking a back seat for the sake of her unborn baby.

0:14:20 > 0:14:23- Weebles wobble... - Feet up on there, excellent.

0:14:23 > 0:14:26Lisa wants to give the baby a few final checks.

0:14:26 > 0:14:29So I'm going to measure your abdomen now

0:14:29 > 0:14:32which should measure by rights about 39.

0:14:36 > 0:14:38It is 42, that's a really good size.

0:14:38 > 0:14:44So absolutely brilliant growth size, and we want a good-sized baby.

0:14:44 > 0:14:46Good-sized babies do a lot better.

0:14:46 > 0:14:49Less chance of infection, it's the low-birth-weight babies

0:14:49 > 0:14:50that don't do very well.

0:14:50 > 0:14:52So the fact that this is a good-sized baby

0:14:52 > 0:14:54and a healthy size is a good thing.

0:14:54 > 0:14:58ULTRASOUND RUMBLES

0:14:58 > 0:15:01There we go. That's baby.

0:15:03 > 0:15:05Hello!

0:15:05 > 0:15:08- How does that make you feel? - Little darling!

0:15:08 > 0:15:10Can you believe that that baby in there is going

0:15:10 > 0:15:12to be in your arms in a few days' time?

0:15:12 > 0:15:14- With a face.- With a face.

0:15:14 > 0:15:17Healthy baby. That sounds brilliant.

0:15:20 > 0:15:21- Cool.- Well, I've looked after her!

0:15:21 > 0:15:24That is wonderful. Absolutely brilliant.

0:15:25 > 0:15:29Another mischievous mum-to-be was Zara,

0:15:29 > 0:15:32who, at seven months pregnant, was a junk-food addict...

0:15:32 > 0:15:37I don't have a chicken burger every day. But when I can have it, I will have it.

0:15:37 > 0:15:40..and a chocoholic.

0:15:40 > 0:15:42I like chocolate. I like cheese.

0:15:44 > 0:15:46- I love chicken.- Cakes.

0:15:46 > 0:15:47Cakes and stuff.

0:15:47 > 0:15:49You should have a bit of fat in your diet.

0:15:49 > 0:15:53But what Zara was eating was also going straight into her baby.

0:15:53 > 0:15:57She's going to be on my milk for the first couple of months of her life.

0:15:57 > 0:16:01She's not really going to come out and be, like, "I want a burger."

0:16:01 > 0:16:05It's now four months later and Zara has given birth to baby Niamh.

0:16:05 > 0:16:06What do you want, Za?

0:16:06 > 0:16:09A prawn mayonnaise and salad baguette?

0:16:09 > 0:16:11It's healthy.

0:16:11 > 0:16:13That's all good then! That's good.

0:16:13 > 0:16:16Junk food is out and healthy, nutritious meals are in.

0:16:18 > 0:16:21Although unrelated to Zara's unhealthy diet,

0:16:21 > 0:16:24Niamh was born with a hole in her heart

0:16:24 > 0:16:27and has already undergone life-saving surgery.

0:16:30 > 0:16:34She was born and then they took her straight up to intensive care

0:16:34 > 0:16:37and then they came and got her at 1.00

0:16:37 > 0:16:42and they said they'd ring us when she'd come out

0:16:42 > 0:16:46and she come out about half eight in the evening.

0:16:46 > 0:16:52She had loads of tubes and wires and stuff all over her.

0:16:52 > 0:16:56They had to close a hole in her heart,

0:16:56 > 0:16:59they had to open her chest and open her ribs.

0:16:59 > 0:17:03And then push her ribs back together.

0:17:03 > 0:17:07Hello. They look like dents.

0:17:07 > 0:17:10But that's where they had to put the chest rings in so...

0:17:10 > 0:17:16It was very, very, very worrying and very, very upsetting.

0:17:16 > 0:17:1950-50 that when she come out,

0:17:19 > 0:17:22that she wouldn't make it through the next 24 hours.

0:17:22 > 0:17:27And we were all waiting and worrying about...

0:17:27 > 0:17:29whether she was going to be OK or not.

0:17:31 > 0:17:33She was back in intensive care on the bed

0:17:33 > 0:17:36and they'd sorted everything out.

0:17:36 > 0:17:39But, yeah. I'm just so happy.

0:17:39 > 0:17:42They said, "No, she's fine."

0:17:44 > 0:17:45Come down and see her.

0:17:46 > 0:17:48Aw, she's doing a poo.

0:17:48 > 0:17:51Oh, I know she is. Aw!

0:17:51 > 0:17:55Zara and her mum are happy now, but just a few months ago, it was a different story.

0:17:55 > 0:17:59Alongside the hole in her heart, Zara was also told the baby could

0:17:59 > 0:18:03have DiGeorge syndrome which could mean long-term medical problems.

0:18:03 > 0:18:05There we are, there's the heartbeat.

0:18:05 > 0:18:08- Come on, baby.- Work it!

0:18:09 > 0:18:11Giving it a good jiggle.

0:18:11 > 0:18:13Oh, look at that, Zara.

0:18:14 > 0:18:17One of the signs of DiGeorge syndrome is a cleft palate.

0:18:17 > 0:18:20This 4D scan was going to reveal

0:18:20 > 0:18:22the baby's face in detail for the first time.

0:18:22 > 0:18:23Nice.

0:18:23 > 0:18:28- Oh, wow!- Behold, you've got a little chin, there's the chin.

0:18:28 > 0:18:29The lips.

0:18:29 > 0:18:32- Oh, my God.- Aw!

0:18:35 > 0:18:39- I was going to say, the lips look OK there.- She looks...- Yeah.

0:18:39 > 0:18:44Learning that the baby didn't have a cleft palate came as a huge relief

0:18:44 > 0:18:47- as it's one of the signs of DiGeorge syndrome.- Baby!

0:18:49 > 0:18:53- They're happy tears for once, isn't it?- Yes.- Happy tears.

0:18:55 > 0:18:58Baby Niamh has been given the all-clear on DiGeorge syndrome

0:18:58 > 0:19:01and it's been seven weeks since her heart surgery.

0:19:01 > 0:19:05Today I'm off to see Zara and her new baby Niamh.

0:19:05 > 0:19:08Zara was only 16 when she found herself pregnant

0:19:08 > 0:19:11and it can be a real shock finding yourself a parent

0:19:11 > 0:19:14at such a young age and there'll be lots of issues

0:19:14 > 0:19:18facing Zara so I can't wait to see how she's getting on with that.

0:19:22 > 0:19:25- Hello?- Hi, it's Lisa, the midwife. Can you let me in?

0:19:25 > 0:19:29- You've got to come in cos Lisa's coming in.- No.- Yes, you have.

0:19:31 > 0:19:32Oh, stop being so silly.

0:19:32 > 0:19:36- Hiya. - Hi, nice to meet you. I'm Lisa.

0:19:36 > 0:19:37Nice to meet you.

0:19:41 > 0:19:47- Hello, little one.- Say hello, Niamh. - Hello to you, you're beautiful.

0:19:47 > 0:19:52Yes, you are. She's got a look of Mum, hasn't she?

0:19:52 > 0:19:54- Do you think she looks like Zara? I do.- Yeah, yeah.

0:19:54 > 0:19:56I can definitely see Zara in her.

0:19:56 > 0:20:00Baby and Granny seem fine, but there's no sign of Zara yet.

0:20:00 > 0:20:05She's still being a little bit of a lazy bones, but...

0:20:07 > 0:20:10..It's all learning curves, isn't it?

0:20:10 > 0:20:14It is, and having a new baby is really difficult for anybody.

0:20:14 > 0:20:20Your mum loves you very much, she's just a bit tired this morning.

0:20:21 > 0:20:25The new mum has finally made an appearance.

0:20:25 > 0:20:28I've never met you personally. It's lovely to see you.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31And your gorgeous baby... Congratulations!

0:20:31 > 0:20:34It's been a rough time for this teenager

0:20:34 > 0:20:37so Lisa wants to have a little one-to-one.

0:20:37 > 0:20:40What's been the main difficulties for you? What's been the hardest thing?

0:20:40 > 0:20:44I don't know. Just, like, not being able to do what I used to do.

0:20:44 > 0:20:49I just used to go out all the time and now I've got to stay in cos I've got to look after the baby.

0:20:49 > 0:20:51I'm not complaining.

0:20:51 > 0:20:54At the end of the day, Zara, you are only very young

0:20:54 > 0:20:56so, of course, it's normal to want to feel that way.

0:20:56 > 0:20:59What would you have normally done? If Eve hadn't been here?

0:20:59 > 0:21:01- Stay in bed. - Till when?

0:21:01 > 0:21:03To, like, one o'clock.

0:21:03 > 0:21:08So how does it feel having Mum around to help?

0:21:08 > 0:21:09So much better.

0:21:09 > 0:21:12Is it? Are you glad that she's here to help?

0:21:12 > 0:21:13Yeah.

0:21:13 > 0:21:17Are there any times when you wish that it was just you and the baby?

0:21:17 > 0:21:18Yeah, loads of times.

0:21:18 > 0:21:21Loads of times? What things do you find difficult to do?

0:21:21 > 0:21:24When she cries, I don't know whether she wants this or she wants that.

0:21:24 > 0:21:28I try her with everything and she just doesn't stop.

0:21:28 > 0:21:31So then my mum has her and then she stops straight away.

0:21:33 > 0:21:35How does that make you feel?

0:21:37 > 0:21:39Like he doesn't know me.

0:21:40 > 0:21:43Like the baby doesn't know you?

0:21:43 > 0:21:47You know when during the pregnancy, they thought the baby had got DiGeorge syndrome

0:21:47 > 0:21:52and they thought there were going to be a lot more problems and they did offer you a termination.

0:21:52 > 0:21:58At that time, that must have been absolutely terrible, to have been faced with that dilemma.

0:21:58 > 0:22:02I can't imagine how at 16 you coped with all of that.

0:22:14 > 0:22:16Oh, darling.

0:22:16 > 0:22:20I think Zara's got some real bonding issues with that baby. It could be for a number of reasons.

0:22:20 > 0:22:23The fact she's so young, she's had a troubled pregnancy

0:22:23 > 0:22:28and she's had a very ill baby to contend with, a baby that wasn't with her in the very beginning

0:22:28 > 0:22:32and we know that where mums aren't with their babies from birth, they can have bonding problems.

0:22:32 > 0:22:37'I want to wrap her in cotton wool and take her and the baby away somewhere to connect'

0:22:37 > 0:22:39but she needs the right environment.

0:22:41 > 0:22:46For all our mischievous mums-to-be, coping with the changes that pregnancy brings was never easy.

0:22:46 > 0:22:52Giving up ciggies, curries and hectic lifestyles proved tough.

0:22:52 > 0:22:53It looks like sick.

0:22:53 > 0:22:56- But it's actually really nice. - But it looks like sick!

0:22:56 > 0:23:01In my head, being 18 and to be putting two babies before myself,

0:23:01 > 0:23:06I've never put anyone before me, ever, so it's a big step for me.

0:23:06 > 0:23:09Basically, I've been to see my midwife today

0:23:09 > 0:23:11and I have got to cut out all the crap.

0:23:11 > 0:23:14Can you still eat bacon and stuff like that?

0:23:14 > 0:23:17To be fair, I could. Just cut the fat off it.

0:23:17 > 0:23:21Since when do I ever listen to anyone saying things to me, do you know what I mean?

0:23:21 > 0:23:23Unless it's useful information, I don't listen.

0:23:23 > 0:23:27My mum and dad worry about me, and have done for a long time, how much I work.

0:23:27 > 0:23:31It's a big thing to change when you've always been a certain way.

0:23:31 > 0:23:34You're asking me to change a big part of my personality in a way.

0:23:34 > 0:23:37Tears and tantrums were quick to follow.

0:23:37 > 0:23:39- I'm not playing. - You are.

0:23:39 > 0:23:43I don't like moaning. You're making me want to smoke a fag right now.

0:23:43 > 0:23:46I'm getting hacked off now. I'm tired and I'm ratty and I just...

0:23:46 > 0:23:48- Why not let me do it?- Cos you don't know what you're doing.

0:23:48 > 0:23:51- How much longer are you going to be? - Just talk to me!

0:23:51 > 0:23:54Stop stressing me out cos I'm going to punch you in a minute.

0:23:54 > 0:23:58It's killing me. Feel how sweaty my palms are.

0:24:03 > 0:24:05It's so hard.

0:24:05 > 0:24:07I makes me sick and I don't want one.

0:24:11 > 0:24:14I feel so stressed.

0:24:19 > 0:24:21After giving up her boozy, stressful lifestyle,

0:24:21 > 0:24:25Juliet is back at her bar in Cardiff.

0:24:25 > 0:24:26So you look huge.

0:24:26 > 0:24:27Yes.

0:24:27 > 0:24:30But this time she's not working.

0:24:30 > 0:24:34Pregnancy has brought her closer together with boyfriend Marik,

0:24:34 > 0:24:36who's now running the bar and restaurant.

0:24:36 > 0:24:39So, I don't work any more, even though I'm here,

0:24:39 > 0:24:44I'm just... I can have overlook and point, but I'm not really working at all.

0:24:44 > 0:24:49Formerly a stresshead, Juliet now takes time to relax with friends.

0:24:49 > 0:24:51Aren't they lovely!

0:24:51 > 0:24:53And even puts her feet up.

0:24:53 > 0:24:55Make yourself comfy.

0:24:55 > 0:24:56Thank you, my dear.

0:24:58 > 0:25:00But it's not always been that way.

0:25:00 > 0:25:03- It's not going to happen.- You have got to stop the excuses.

0:25:03 > 0:25:09When we first met Juliet, midwife Alison was worried that she hadn't dealt with her divorce properly,

0:25:09 > 0:25:12causing stress do her and her unborn baby.

0:25:12 > 0:25:18If I offered you some counselling, if you think that would be beneficial...

0:25:18 > 0:25:22After much persuasion, Juliet agreed to book a counselling session.

0:25:22 > 0:25:27A bit of therapy, it is a big thing and I think it would probably be quite an emotional thing

0:25:27 > 0:25:31cos I've not been able to talk to anybody about it, so...

0:25:33 > 0:25:36- I'm emotional now.- BLEEP

0:25:36 > 0:25:37Sorry.

0:25:40 > 0:25:45That's why I want to get it put to bed cos I should be over it now.

0:25:45 > 0:25:47But unfortunately, I'm not.

0:25:47 > 0:25:50I will cos that's why I want to get it out the way

0:25:50 > 0:25:53cos it's a horrible, negative thing that happened

0:25:53 > 0:25:59and it's still in my head and this is a positive thing and I don't want it to conflict.

0:26:00 > 0:26:05When Juliet's marriage broke down, she threw herself into work at the bar

0:26:05 > 0:26:08leaving no time to deal with her feelings.

0:26:08 > 0:26:15I think the whole fags, booze and self-destruct was cos I was so bloody unhappy.

0:26:17 > 0:26:22I just want to get rid of it so that that negative energy is not put into this baby.

0:26:22 > 0:26:27Petrified of opening that big can of worms again and letting those feelings...

0:26:27 > 0:26:32cos I defy anyone to still be breathing after the way I felt,

0:26:32 > 0:26:34after what I think I've been through.

0:26:34 > 0:26:36But it wasn't all bad.

0:26:36 > 0:26:39Juliet had previously been told she couldn't have children

0:26:39 > 0:26:43so when she found out she was pregnant by her new boyfriend,

0:26:43 > 0:26:46she felt she had been given a new lease of life.

0:26:46 > 0:26:52Seven months on and back at the bar, Juliet's family are busy trying to predict the sex of her new baby.

0:26:52 > 0:26:56If it goes round in a circle, it's a girl. Left or right, it's a boy.

0:26:56 > 0:26:59Mum is chuffed that Juliet's given up the booze.

0:26:59 > 0:27:02She's done excellent, absolutely amazing.

0:27:02 > 0:27:06She hasn't drunk one spot of alcohol, she has not smoked a cigarette,

0:27:06 > 0:27:09and I think it's totally commendable.

0:27:09 > 0:27:13She's more passive, happier, contented,

0:27:13 > 0:27:17everything you should be when you're pregnant.

0:27:17 > 0:27:20And sceptical sister Shelley has eaten her words.

0:27:20 > 0:27:25The wine went, the cigarettes went, obviously she didn't find that very easy,

0:27:25 > 0:27:30but I don't think everyone realised how serious she was at one point.

0:27:30 > 0:27:34I thought she was a bit of a lost cause. I really was concerned.

0:27:34 > 0:27:38So it's just been amazing. It's wonderful.

0:27:38 > 0:27:42It's hard not to feel emotional, especially when you love your sister so much.

0:27:43 > 0:27:45I'm just proud of her.

0:27:47 > 0:27:52Since giving up her stressful lifestyle, Juliet has had a lot of time to reflect.

0:27:52 > 0:27:56I wasn't quite sure what I'd find today because I knew that you were really busy,

0:27:56 > 0:28:00you really loved that lifestyle actually, all that stress.

0:28:00 > 0:28:04- I did.- You did! You enjoyed it, you got a buzz out of it.

0:28:04 > 0:28:07The reasons why I was drinking... I was drinking because I was unhappy

0:28:07 > 0:28:12and part of that unhappiness was the knowledge that I couldn't have children,

0:28:12 > 0:28:18so of course, when you find out, actually, you're pregnant, it's like...

0:28:18 > 0:28:19Oh, my God!

0:28:19 > 0:28:23What is really wonderful for me is to see you here,

0:28:23 > 0:28:28in this place that you are now, in this really calm, happy place

0:28:28 > 0:28:33because it's just written all over your face that you're just where you want to be.

0:28:33 > 0:28:37This baby has saved my life.

0:28:37 > 0:28:41I'm creating it and giving it a life but it's saved mine,

0:28:41 > 0:28:45otherwise, I don't think that... It's not a nice thing to say,

0:28:45 > 0:28:48but I don't think I'd be here for much longer.

0:28:48 > 0:28:49You came through such a rough time.

0:28:49 > 0:28:54It's been heaven-sent. An angel has sent his baby to me...

0:28:55 > 0:28:57Sorry!

0:28:57 > 0:28:59Don't, you'll have me in tears.

0:29:02 > 0:29:05It's wonderful, you've been given a gift.

0:29:05 > 0:29:08You've been given a gift, a true gift,

0:29:08 > 0:29:13and that is just the best thing that could happen to anybody, isn't it?

0:29:13 > 0:29:17Lucky is not my middle name, but this has been...

0:29:17 > 0:29:20yeah, it really is...

0:29:20 > 0:29:23It really is the best thing that has ever happened to me.

0:29:23 > 0:29:26I can see it, it's written all over your face.

0:29:26 > 0:29:29It's been a journey, it's been a journey.

0:29:29 > 0:29:33You've come through the other side smiling and happy, haven't you?

0:29:33 > 0:29:36Oh, yeah. I'm over the moon. Totally blessed.

0:29:36 > 0:29:40She's gone from being a very stressed, business orientated person,

0:29:40 > 0:29:43to looking like a mum-to-be.

0:29:43 > 0:29:46She's finally focused on what is important.

0:29:46 > 0:29:49She's about to bring a new life into the world

0:29:49 > 0:29:52and I think that is clear to see, that she is overjoyed by that.

0:29:56 > 0:30:00Three weeks later, Juliet gave birth to a healthy baby girl.

0:30:01 > 0:30:08Having this amazing angel in my arms is a dream that I never thought was ever going to come true.

0:30:10 > 0:30:13# Some kind of magic

0:30:15 > 0:30:18# When I woke the world was new

0:30:20 > 0:30:24# I never had to ask

0:30:26 > 0:30:29# It's a brand new day... #

0:30:29 > 0:30:32I still can't believe it's happened to me.

0:30:32 > 0:30:37It's been the best thing that's happened to me in my whole life.

0:30:41 > 0:30:4416-year-old Zara is struggling as a new mum.

0:30:44 > 0:30:49Her baby underwent life-saving heart surgery shortly after birth

0:30:49 > 0:30:53and Lisa's worried that it may have affected mum and baby's bond.

0:30:53 > 0:30:58Zara's mum seems to be taking on more than her fair share of baby duties,

0:30:58 > 0:31:01so Lisa wants to try and get Granny to take a step back.

0:31:01 > 0:31:09What she would like would be for you to just help her get to know Niamh a bit better

0:31:09 > 0:31:12by allowing her to do that little bit more.

0:31:12 > 0:31:17With your support and help she feels that she could achieve that.

0:31:17 > 0:31:19We wondered how you felt about that.

0:31:19 > 0:31:22- I think that's amazing. - Do you?- Yeah, I do.

0:31:22 > 0:31:25I said she's be pleased!

0:31:25 > 0:31:28I don't want to be doing it for you, Zara. You're her mum.

0:31:29 > 0:31:33I will support you 100%. You know that.

0:31:35 > 0:31:41I want you to tell your mum what you want her to do for you and Niamh.

0:31:41 > 0:31:45- Tell her.- Think I'm taking over?

0:31:46 > 0:31:48And you don't like it.

0:31:48 > 0:31:50Why do you think I'm taking over?

0:31:50 > 0:31:53Feels like you are.

0:31:55 > 0:31:56Well, I don't want to.

0:31:56 > 0:32:01I get the feeling that had she not had the surgery and health problems

0:32:01 > 0:32:03things might be a bit different.

0:32:03 > 0:32:08She's so small and fragile and she's been through so much.

0:32:08 > 0:32:11You're so scared of doing something that might not be right

0:32:11 > 0:32:14you'd rather not do anything at all.

0:32:14 > 0:32:19What other things d'you feel you'd benefit from? Spending some quality time with Niamh? Yeah?

0:32:19 > 0:32:22You could do with a bit of TLC as well.

0:32:22 > 0:32:24A bit of pampering.

0:32:26 > 0:32:31Lisa's found the perfect solution to help Zara and her baby get closer.

0:32:31 > 0:32:34Hello, Zara. Lovely to meet you.

0:32:34 > 0:32:36A baby massage class.

0:32:39 > 0:32:42- So you've not done any infant massage before?- No.

0:32:42 > 0:32:48What we're going to do, this is my baby. Do a bit of shoulder rolling.

0:32:48 > 0:32:51Which feels really strange, I know.

0:32:51 > 0:32:54Oil up and put it on your hands.

0:32:54 > 0:32:56Would you like a massage?

0:32:58 > 0:33:02All the way up. Up to the ankle and back down to the side.

0:33:02 > 0:33:04Toe roll.

0:33:05 > 0:33:08We're going to do leg rolling - rolling the leg

0:33:08 > 0:33:12all the way from the side up to the ankle. Perfect.

0:33:20 > 0:33:24I'd definitely do it again.

0:33:24 > 0:33:27It just feels like you bond with the baby more.

0:33:27 > 0:33:32She could feel that I was touching her and I could feel that she knew I was touching her.

0:33:34 > 0:33:39She was lacking in confidence, self-esteem and belief in herself that she could be a good mum

0:33:39 > 0:33:42and this afternoon I think what we've seen has been brilliant.

0:33:42 > 0:33:44They bonded.

0:33:50 > 0:33:54I think there were moments where she truly thought, "This is my child."

0:33:54 > 0:33:58BABY CRIES

0:34:04 > 0:34:07Ceri-Anne has been smoke free for five months,

0:34:07 > 0:34:11but despite many promises, her boyfriend Ben still hasn't quit.

0:34:11 > 0:34:15Why don't we go in and have a look over there...?

0:34:15 > 0:34:17Before Lisa tackles the issue with Ben,

0:34:17 > 0:34:21she's taken Ceri-Anne for a quick shopping trip to spend some of the money she saved.

0:34:21 > 0:34:26Oh, yeah, that's lovely. See, that's only four days' cigarettes as well.

0:34:26 > 0:34:29How does it feel to know you're smoke free and you've done it?

0:34:29 > 0:34:32Overwhelmed. Like, so glad I done it. I knew I could do it.

0:34:32 > 0:34:36Hi. We'd like those, please. Thank you.

0:34:36 > 0:34:42Ceri-Anne has done amazingly well, but is she getting the support she needs from boyfriend Ben?

0:34:42 > 0:34:45Lisa wants to let Ben know just what he's putting into his body

0:34:45 > 0:34:49and what his second-hand smoke is doing to his baby.

0:34:49 > 0:34:55- Do you know how many chemicals are in cigarettes?- Thousands.- Thousands. But here's some common ones.

0:34:57 > 0:35:00Weedkiller, OK?

0:35:00 > 0:35:04There are chemicals in there that are actually banned in this country.

0:35:04 > 0:35:07- Did you know that you're inhaling that with every cigarette?- No.

0:35:07 > 0:35:11OK, we have toilet cleaner,

0:35:11 > 0:35:14and in toilet cleaner there is a chemical called formaldehyde.

0:35:14 > 0:35:17Do you know what formaldehyde is? De you know what it's used for?

0:35:17 > 0:35:24- Cleaning the toilet!- Yeah, but it's also commonly used to preserve dead bodies.- Oh!

0:35:24 > 0:35:27It's an embalming fluid.

0:35:27 > 0:35:28Eurgh!

0:35:28 > 0:35:31And last but not least we have ammonia.

0:35:31 > 0:35:35Now you put it like that, it does seem a bit different.

0:35:35 > 0:35:39Would you, I wonder, smoke a cigarette if I took some of these

0:35:39 > 0:35:43and put them into a cigarette and then I said, "Smoke that now?"

0:35:43 > 0:35:46- Would you do it?- No, I'd tell you to jog on.- Really?- I would.

0:35:46 > 0:35:49But that's already in there, that's what you're doing.

0:35:49 > 0:35:54That's only four of 4,200 chemicals that you're putting in your body

0:35:54 > 0:35:57every single day with every single cigarette.

0:35:57 > 0:36:02If you carry on smoking, and Maisie grows up seeing you as a smoker,

0:36:02 > 0:36:05by the time she is about 14 years old,

0:36:05 > 0:36:08she's far more likely to have tried smoking herself,

0:36:08 > 0:36:12so she could well come home one day smelling of cigarettes and say,

0:36:12 > 0:36:16"Dad, you're doing it. I've seen you smoke for the last 14 years."

0:36:16 > 0:36:22How would you feel if she came home and you knew that she was putting these chemicals in her body?

0:36:22 > 0:36:24I'd hit the roof. I would hit the roof massively.

0:36:24 > 0:36:30- But I... She's not smoking. - You can't stop her, though, can you? - Why don't you want her to start?

0:36:30 > 0:36:34- Cos I don't want her to damage herself.- So why are you doing it to yourself?

0:36:34 > 0:36:37I don't want to smoke, I want to quit smoking.

0:36:37 > 0:36:42- So stopping is something that you really feel you'd like to give it another try now?- Yeah.

0:36:42 > 0:36:48Why don't we get that down on paper, then? So, your pledge, OK?

0:36:49 > 0:36:50"I promise..."

0:36:52 > 0:36:54OK, that's for you to keep now.

0:36:57 > 0:37:00- Just got to stick to it now, haven't you?- I think it's brilliant.

0:37:00 > 0:37:03I think, you know, he's done this for you and for Maisie-Lee,

0:37:03 > 0:37:08- and I don't think we could ask any more of him.- No. - I think he deserves a kiss.

0:37:09 > 0:37:13Ben's tried giving up smoking lots of times before, and hasn't managed it.

0:37:13 > 0:37:17I'm hoping this new baby will give him the inspiration he needs,

0:37:17 > 0:37:20and I hope he gives it his best shot because I believe deep down

0:37:20 > 0:37:22that he really does want to be smoke-free.

0:37:22 > 0:37:25I don't feel like smoking now. I really don't feel like smoking.

0:37:25 > 0:37:30- Well, if you have a go, then you've had a go, haven't you, at least. - I'll give it a go.- OK.

0:37:33 > 0:37:38As Benn promises to kick the fags, his new family mark the beginning of a smoke-free future.

0:37:38 > 0:37:40Don't cry, come on.

0:37:40 > 0:37:44Meeting Lisa really changed my whole thoughts on smoking.

0:37:44 > 0:37:48'It's really changed my life, it's helped me a lot.'

0:37:48 > 0:37:51It's changed my view on smoking completely.

0:37:51 > 0:37:56It obviously helped me to quit, and it changed my health and my fitness,

0:37:56 > 0:37:59and obviously Maisie's a bouncing, happy little girl.

0:38:03 > 0:38:08Not all the mischievous mums-to-be found it easy to give up their unhealthy lifestyles,

0:38:08 > 0:38:11and the next mum Lisa's going to visit did struggle.

0:38:13 > 0:38:16When we first met Amy, she was four months pregnant

0:38:16 > 0:38:18and puffing on 15 cigarettes a day.

0:38:22 > 0:38:27When I had my scan and saw the baby moving, really energetic,

0:38:27 > 0:38:32I thought, well, it's not doing no damage to the baby and just carried on as normal, really,

0:38:32 > 0:38:35just like every day, cigarette after cigarette.

0:38:38 > 0:38:42With Lisa's help, Amy quit the fags during pregnancy.

0:38:42 > 0:38:44It's now been six months since we last saw her,

0:38:44 > 0:38:48and Lisa's on her way to meet Amy and her new baby.

0:38:50 > 0:38:55- Hello! You OK? - Hello, you! Are you all right? - I'm OK, thank you.

0:38:55 > 0:38:57It's lovely to see you.

0:38:58 > 0:39:01Oh, my goodness, she is so gorgeous!

0:39:01 > 0:39:04- Thank you.- Oh, hello, little one!

0:39:04 > 0:39:08- How old is she now?- Five weeks. Well, five weeks, two days.

0:39:08 > 0:39:12- Oh, she's fantastic. Oh, congratulations.- Thank you.

0:39:12 > 0:39:16- You found the birth OK? - Yeah.- That's good news,

0:39:16 > 0:39:19- and I'm really glad you didn't end up with a Caesarean. - I know. I know, so am I.

0:39:19 > 0:39:22Cos that was one of the risks of smoking in pregnancy,

0:39:22 > 0:39:25you're more likely to have a more complicated delivery,

0:39:25 > 0:39:27so it's good news that you had a good time.

0:39:27 > 0:39:32So, time to find out if baby Ava is sleeping in a smoke-free environment.

0:39:32 > 0:39:37- So, this is your bedroom?- Yeah. - I can see the little Moses basket in the corner.

0:39:37 > 0:39:42- So this is Ava's room?- Yes. - What a lovely, bright, sunny room.

0:39:42 > 0:39:46- That's great. But the whole house is smoke-free?- Yeah.

0:39:46 > 0:39:49Cos as I'm walking round I can tell there's no smoke anywhere,

0:39:49 > 0:39:52so you've kept it smoke-free right from pregnancy, which is brilliant.

0:39:52 > 0:39:55Amy's house is fag-free now.

0:39:55 > 0:39:58But when she first saw Lisa, it was a different story.

0:39:58 > 0:40:01She was four months pregnant and addicted to nicotine.

0:40:01 > 0:40:05- Hi, Amy, come on in. Have a seat, sit down.- Cheers.

0:40:05 > 0:40:07I would like to be able to tell you what some of the risks are

0:40:07 > 0:40:13- so that you can understand why giving up smoking in pregnancy is so important.- Yeah.

0:40:13 > 0:40:16First and foremost,

0:40:16 > 0:40:19carbon monoxide is given off from the smoke of a cigarette.

0:40:19 > 0:40:24It's a poisonous gas and takes up the place of where oxygen should be,

0:40:24 > 0:40:26so for every single cigarette that you have,

0:40:26 > 0:40:33it's almost like me squeezing the cord and stopping the oxygen getting through,

0:40:33 > 0:40:37and if that comes away, what do you think would happen to the baby?

0:40:37 > 0:40:39The baby'll die.

0:40:41 > 0:40:46- I can see that has really, really upset you.- Thanks.

0:40:49 > 0:40:53- Why has that bit upset you so much? Is that because you think it could happen?- Yeah.

0:40:53 > 0:40:56- Is that something you were thinking about before?- Yeah, a lot.

0:40:56 > 0:41:00It was upsetting for Amy, but she needed to know the facts.

0:41:00 > 0:41:05And it worked. After meeting Lisa, she slapped on a patch,

0:41:05 > 0:41:07combed the house for ashtrays...

0:41:07 > 0:41:10Ta-da!

0:41:10 > 0:41:14And went off to work armed with an arsenal of nicotine replacement therapy

0:41:14 > 0:41:16ready to kick her 15-a-day habit.

0:41:18 > 0:41:21A few days later, she was still smoke free,

0:41:21 > 0:41:26using exercise to distract her, as well as some little treats along the way.

0:41:26 > 0:41:27Thank you, I love them.

0:41:27 > 0:41:32A few weeks later, it was time to find out if the baby was finally out of danger.

0:41:32 > 0:41:35Last time, you blew a 12, the baby was in red,

0:41:35 > 0:41:37high level of carbon monoxide.

0:41:37 > 0:41:40- This time we are wanting four and below.- OK.

0:41:40 > 0:41:44Until you can't blow any more. Brilliant, let's have a look.

0:41:44 > 0:41:48Look at that! It's a green two! From 12!

0:41:48 > 0:41:52And that is your proof that all your hard work has paid off.

0:41:52 > 0:41:56- That demonstrates how beneficial that is to baby.- Oh, I'm so happy.

0:41:56 > 0:41:58Really happy, emotional.

0:41:58 > 0:42:01What are you doing?

0:42:01 > 0:42:04Amy stayed smoke-free throughout her pregnancy,

0:42:04 > 0:42:08so the big question is, is she still off the fags?

0:42:08 > 0:42:11- So how did you get on? - After I'd given birth...

0:42:12 > 0:42:15..it was about four days, three or four days,

0:42:15 > 0:42:20and because I was just so, not stressed, but so, like...

0:42:20 > 0:42:24I really wanted a cig, and then I had some and it kind of went on from there again.

0:42:24 > 0:42:27- But I'm not smoking as much as I used to.- OK.

0:42:27 > 0:42:31You're going outside for the cigarette and you're having that time out there.

0:42:31 > 0:42:35While you're having that cigarette, what are you thinking about?

0:42:35 > 0:42:40- The baby.- The baby. - Definitely.- So how does that make you feel, then, about your smoking?

0:42:40 > 0:42:43I feel guilty, I don't like smoking, I just think...

0:42:43 > 0:42:46I don't see why I've started again, really. It's just...

0:42:47 > 0:42:49I don't know.

0:42:49 > 0:42:53It's a real shame that Amy's gone back to smoking after all that hard work in pregnancy,

0:42:53 > 0:42:56but we know that some ladies do relapse postnatally.

0:42:56 > 0:43:02What we need to make sure is that Amy understands the dangers of continuing to smoke around that baby.

0:43:04 > 0:43:07The last girl Lisa's going to catch up with is Kayley. When we first met

0:43:07 > 0:43:11this 22-year-old arcade worker, she was three months pregnant,

0:43:11 > 0:43:155 foot 1, and tipping the scales at over 16 stone,

0:43:15 > 0:43:18making her a staggering seven stone overweight.

0:43:18 > 0:43:20Can I have two portions of chips?

0:43:20 > 0:43:23'I've always been a big person, ever since I was a teenager.'

0:43:23 > 0:43:27Cos I've always been that way, I've not really been that bothered by it.

0:43:27 > 0:43:31As she was working such long hours, boyfriend Michael had taken over the kitchen.

0:43:31 > 0:43:35I don't know how to cook. Just put something on a tray in the oven.

0:43:35 > 0:43:36Here you go.

0:43:36 > 0:43:39'Chips and gravy is my favourite meal. I just can't get enough of it.'

0:43:39 > 0:43:44I'll have this maybe two or three times a week. It's what I'm craving, so I'll eat it.

0:43:45 > 0:43:50Today, it's a different story, and Kayley and her boyfriend are enjoying a healthy diet.

0:43:50 > 0:43:53They're also the proud parents of a two-month-old baby boy.

0:43:53 > 0:43:55Come on, smile!

0:43:55 > 0:43:59Before we met Carol, Michael was putting things like chicken and chips in the oven

0:43:59 > 0:44:02and that was it. And now he's really making an effort.

0:44:02 > 0:44:05He'll make chicken fajitas, so he'll do the chicken from scratch,

0:44:05 > 0:44:09do all of the vegetables, and we'll have salad with it.

0:44:09 > 0:44:11It's a massive change to what we'd eat before,

0:44:11 > 0:44:15so the fact that we're now eating a hell of a lot more vegetables on a single plate.

0:44:15 > 0:44:19- It's easier than eating what we used to, isn't it? It's nicer.- Mmm.

0:44:20 > 0:44:22But eight months ago it was a different story.

0:44:22 > 0:44:28Kayley came to see midwife Carol, who was less than impressed with her unhealthy eating habits.

0:44:28 > 0:44:31I've kept the wrappers of what I've been eating for the last week.

0:44:31 > 0:44:33Let's have a look at a few of them, then.

0:44:33 > 0:44:39There's lots of convenience foods. Your cottage pie, fat is 30%.

0:44:39 > 0:44:43Basically, whatever you're eating is sort of going into your body,

0:44:43 > 0:44:46and it will compound in towards your baby.

0:44:46 > 0:44:50Carol wanted to show Kayley just what her diet was doing to her body.

0:44:50 > 0:44:55Fat is excessive. People that are obese are more inclined to have

0:44:55 > 0:44:57high blood pressure, which is hypertension.

0:44:57 > 0:45:01You're also at risk of developing gestational diabetes.

0:45:01 > 0:45:06If you carry on at the rate you're going, it will shorten your own life.

0:45:06 > 0:45:09- Yeah.- I'm sure you're quite shocked by it.- Yeah.

0:45:09 > 0:45:13At work, Kayley was spending most of her time sitting down.

0:45:13 > 0:45:17I do a nine-hour shift most days, so it is being here a long time

0:45:17 > 0:45:19and not really doing a lot while I'm here.

0:45:19 > 0:45:23So Carol decided to pay her a visit to get her off her bottom

0:45:23 > 0:45:26and doing some exercise to prepare for her labour.

0:45:26 > 0:45:29How you? Nice to see you again.

0:45:29 > 0:45:33This place is lively, and that is just amazing.

0:45:33 > 0:45:35It actually makes me feel...

0:45:35 > 0:45:38Especially when you hear the music. I feel I could jig around here now.

0:45:38 > 0:45:40So you have to sort of...

0:45:40 > 0:45:44Carol advised her to do some squatting to help the baby move into the birthing canal.

0:45:44 > 0:45:45And then up again.

0:45:45 > 0:45:49And getting down on all fours is a good position for giving birth.

0:45:49 > 0:45:52It allows the weight of the baby to come forward.

0:45:52 > 0:45:56And you might even start to do a bit of this when you're labouring.

0:45:56 > 0:45:59I've not gone red cos it's a strain, it's cos I'm embarrassed.

0:45:59 > 0:46:02I'm in a public place and I'm squatting on all fours.

0:46:02 > 0:46:06When you're labouring, you won't care if all of Margate comes in and watches you,

0:46:06 > 0:46:09as long as you can get that baby out quickly.

0:46:09 > 0:46:13Most women will deliver probably like this.

0:46:13 > 0:46:14So your pelvis is like that.

0:46:14 > 0:46:19- Yeah.- But when we want you to deliver we want your legs like that. - Yeah.

0:46:19 > 0:46:21And you have to hold your own legs up.

0:46:21 > 0:46:23Honest to God.

0:46:23 > 0:46:28- And you have to be able to pull forward and push the baby through. - Yeah.

0:46:30 > 0:46:36Today, Lisa is on her way to meet Kayley to find out if those exercises have paid off.

0:46:36 > 0:46:39Hello, Kayley, I'm Lisa. Lovely to meet you.

0:46:39 > 0:46:42- You, too. Do you want to come in? - Thank you.

0:46:42 > 0:46:44- So this is Ryan?- Yep.

0:46:44 > 0:46:50- Oh, how gorgeous is he? How old is he now?- He's eight weeks.

0:46:50 > 0:46:51Oh, he's lovely.

0:46:51 > 0:46:55- I bet you're over the moon.- Yeah. - Did you have a nice labour?

0:46:55 > 0:46:58Yeah, I was in labour for about 18 hours.

0:46:58 > 0:47:00I was active for as much of it as I could be.

0:47:00 > 0:47:04I got to about six centimetres standing,

0:47:04 > 0:47:08well, kneeling at the end of the bed on all fours, being upright.

0:47:08 > 0:47:10So, for the last bit, I was on the bed.

0:47:10 > 0:47:14- Well done!- I know. I'm very proud of myself. I can remember bits of it.

0:47:14 > 0:47:18Do you think that would have happened had you not made those changes?

0:47:18 > 0:47:20Definitely not.

0:47:20 > 0:47:24- Not at all.- Really? - It wouldn't have because I wouldn't have thought to do it.

0:47:24 > 0:47:28I wouldn't have had the easy labour that I had. It could have been so much worse.

0:47:28 > 0:47:33Since giving birth, Kayley's a stone and a half lighter.

0:47:33 > 0:47:35Lisa wants her to keep up the good work

0:47:35 > 0:47:38so she's arranged a meeting with a local fitness instructor

0:47:38 > 0:47:42to show her some new exercises which, this time, include baby.

0:47:42 > 0:47:45Hello. How nice to meet you. I'm Lisa.

0:47:45 > 0:47:47- Hi, Lisa.- And this is Kayley.

0:47:47 > 0:47:49- Nice to meet you.- Nice to meet you.

0:47:49 > 0:47:52I'm here to show you that you can exercise while you've got the baby,

0:47:52 > 0:47:55make it fun for you both. And as the babies get older

0:47:55 > 0:47:57they get more interactive, so it gets even better.

0:47:57 > 0:48:01Lean forward. That's it. And then come back up again.

0:48:01 > 0:48:03- And as you come up, squeeze your bottom.- OK.

0:48:03 > 0:48:06You're going, "Mum, what are you doing?"

0:48:08 > 0:48:12Incorporating the baby into exercise is the perfect opportunity

0:48:12 > 0:48:13for mum to strengthen muscles

0:48:13 > 0:48:17which may have become weakened during pregnancy.

0:48:17 > 0:48:20Kayley is a real success, isn't she?

0:48:20 > 0:48:25She made those changes through her pregnancy, she's carried them on now she's got the baby,

0:48:25 > 0:48:26which is fantastic.

0:48:26 > 0:48:28And then the other way.

0:48:28 > 0:48:31I think what surprises me more is that she wants more.

0:48:31 > 0:48:34She's said, "I wish I could do more. I've got plans.

0:48:34 > 0:48:38"I can't do them just yet, but I would like to be more active."

0:48:38 > 0:48:41So she is a real inspiration.

0:48:41 > 0:48:44- So, well done, you. - Thank you very much.

0:48:44 > 0:48:47Lovely to meet you. You too, Kayley. And bye-bye, Ryan.

0:48:47 > 0:48:50Bless him. We won't disturb him, he's asleep. Take care.

0:48:50 > 0:48:52- You too. Thank you very much. - Bye.- Bye.

0:49:00 > 0:49:02I think they're in my bag.

0:49:02 > 0:49:07Back in Manchester, Amy is now the proud mum of two-month-old baby Eva.

0:49:07 > 0:49:12With Lisa's help, she gave up smoking during pregnancy.

0:49:12 > 0:49:16Her house is now smoke-free, but sadly we can't say the same for her lungs.

0:49:16 > 0:49:20New father Andy's addiction isn't helping either.

0:49:20 > 0:49:24I didn't start smoking until about three days after she was born.

0:49:24 > 0:49:28I think it was the stress. And Andy's going out. I thought, "Bugger it, I'm going out for one."

0:49:28 > 0:49:32When she's asleep, we'll come out together and have a cig when she's asleep.

0:49:32 > 0:49:36And, depending how long she's asleep for, we might have a couple.

0:49:36 > 0:49:38But I'm not that bad.

0:49:41 > 0:49:44So Lisa's returning to try and help Amy quit again.

0:49:44 > 0:49:48But she needs to tackle her bad influences as well. And that means Andy.

0:49:51 > 0:49:54It's really important the whole family give up smoking

0:49:54 > 0:49:56in order to protect that baby.

0:49:56 > 0:49:59People often don't realise the risks of second-hand smoke.

0:50:03 > 0:50:04She's here now, OK?

0:50:04 > 0:50:10So the pregnancy is gone and there are new risks now from your cigarette smoking.

0:50:10 > 0:50:13- What sort of risks are there? - Cot death.

0:50:13 > 0:50:18Respiratory illness, asthma, glue ear, things like that.

0:50:18 > 0:50:23And what you said is one of probably the biggest fears of all parents - cot death.

0:50:23 > 0:50:24And that is a real risk.

0:50:24 > 0:50:27You're doing lots of things to keep her safe.

0:50:27 > 0:50:29You're sterilising her bottles.

0:50:29 > 0:50:34You do not want to put anything in her that is wrong, toxic,

0:50:34 > 0:50:36harmful, will make her poorly.

0:50:36 > 0:50:39So you're doing all of that

0:50:39 > 0:50:42and then you're breathing out those toxic fumes on her.

0:50:42 > 0:50:43Yeah.

0:50:43 > 0:50:45How does that make you feel?

0:50:45 > 0:50:48- Yeah...- Like the other stuff's pointless, really.- Yeah.

0:50:48 > 0:50:51It seems like you're making all this effort and then,

0:50:51 > 0:50:54by doing one thing that you've done for years,

0:50:54 > 0:50:55you're doing the worst thing.

0:50:55 > 0:50:58I've seen you two with her the last couple of hours,

0:50:58 > 0:51:00and you're absolutely besotted by her.

0:51:00 > 0:51:04She is the centre of your universe. She is the centre of your world.

0:51:04 > 0:51:09- You can't imagine one minute of your day without Eva.- No.

0:51:09 > 0:51:12What would the next stage be for you?

0:51:12 > 0:51:15I'd like to quit again. I really would.

0:51:15 > 0:51:16What about you, Andy?

0:51:16 > 0:51:19Yeah, I mean, it's like, it's easier if two of you quit.

0:51:19 > 0:51:22We need to look at the smoking situation.

0:51:22 > 0:51:23So what you're saying then, Amy,

0:51:23 > 0:51:26is that you're prepared to give it another go?

0:51:26 > 0:51:29- Yeah, definitely.- OK. And Andy,

0:51:29 > 0:51:31- you're prepared to give it a go quitting.- Yeah, I am.

0:51:31 > 0:51:37She wants to chip in, and she wants to say,

0:51:37 > 0:51:43"Mum, Dad, I want you to be totally smoke-free for ever."

0:51:45 > 0:51:48Yeah. That's what you're trying to say, isn't it?

0:51:48 > 0:51:50Smoke-free for ever.

0:51:50 > 0:51:53I mean, Amy has gone back to her smoking.

0:51:53 > 0:51:55That didn't absolutely surprise me.

0:51:55 > 0:51:58This time, fantastic, we've got Andy on board.

0:51:58 > 0:52:02Andy continued to smoke through Amy's pregnancy, was working away.

0:52:02 > 0:52:04I don't think he could see that it was a problem.

0:52:04 > 0:52:07But now he's got his gorgeous little girl there,

0:52:07 > 0:52:11he's really determined to support Amy, do the best that he can for Eva.

0:52:11 > 0:52:15And the fact that they're doing it together is fantastic.

0:52:15 > 0:52:18And I think they stand a much better chance of success

0:52:18 > 0:52:20because they're doing it together.

0:52:25 > 0:52:27Should be fine, really.

0:52:27 > 0:52:32I guess we have to be determined to do it and then, if we do that, we'll conquer it.

0:52:32 > 0:52:36I am more determined after what she said today, Lisa.

0:52:38 > 0:52:40A bit scary, isn't it?

0:52:40 > 0:52:42Yeah.

0:52:48 > 0:52:51A few days later, and their new quit day has arrived.

0:52:55 > 0:52:57- Morning.- Morning.

0:53:02 > 0:53:06The patches alone aren't enough for hardened smoker, Amy,

0:53:06 > 0:53:09and by 9.30am she's already on the inhaler.

0:53:09 > 0:53:12I think it's the actual action of doing it as well.

0:53:12 > 0:53:15I don't think I could just use the chewing gums.

0:53:15 > 0:53:18I definitely need this. It's a lot better.

0:53:18 > 0:53:22Amy decides to get out of the house for some well-needed distraction.

0:53:22 > 0:53:26- See you later.- See you later. Bye.

0:53:26 > 0:53:27How are you doing?

0:53:27 > 0:53:31And a pep-talk from anti-smoking sister-in-law Clare.

0:53:31 > 0:53:35- Have you had any this morning, then? Have you bought any?- No.

0:53:35 > 0:53:38- Just checking.- Through the ashtray out this morning.

0:53:38 > 0:53:40- Do you think you can do it again? - Yeah.

0:53:40 > 0:53:43- Having Eva will keep you more distracted.- She does.

0:53:43 > 0:53:47It's time for baby Eva's introduction to the world of art.

0:53:47 > 0:53:50- Oh, dear!- She's pinching my hand.

0:53:52 > 0:53:53There we go.

0:53:55 > 0:53:58You can be proud when people ask for a light

0:53:58 > 0:54:00- and you say, "I don't smoke." - I know.

0:54:00 > 0:54:05But you should say that you've got Eva rules - no smoking in this house.

0:54:05 > 0:54:09- Yeah, and put up a no smoking sign. - I'll start making everyone no smoking.

0:54:09 > 0:54:13So, in case they forget, here's a reminder of the new house rules.

0:54:13 > 0:54:16No smoking in Eva's house.

0:54:16 > 0:54:20Amy's doing well, but she's worried that Andy may have caved in.

0:54:22 > 0:54:25- Hello.- Hello. You all right?

0:54:25 > 0:54:28- Yeah.- Have you had a good day?- Mm.

0:54:28 > 0:54:31- You haven't been smoking? - No. Have you?- No, not at all.

0:54:31 > 0:54:33- Really?- Yeah.

0:54:33 > 0:54:37- I've had three chewing gums and a patch.- Yeah?

0:54:37 > 0:54:41I think Andy's done really well, actually.

0:54:41 > 0:54:47I know it would be harder for you because you smoked a lot more.

0:54:47 > 0:54:50Quit the day has been a big success for Andy and Amy.

0:54:50 > 0:54:53- PHONE RINGS - Hello.

0:54:53 > 0:54:56Hi, Amy. I'm ringing to see how you're doing today.

0:54:56 > 0:54:58We've got on fine.

0:54:58 > 0:55:00We've both not had one all day.

0:55:00 > 0:55:04That is absolutely fantastic. Well done, you!

0:55:04 > 0:55:08Changing your routines, changing your patterns is always a good thing to do.

0:55:08 > 0:55:14And you've already found some very effective ways of dealing with that, so you've done absolutely brilliant.

0:55:14 > 0:55:17That's brilliant. Thanks so much for your help, Lisa.

0:55:17 > 0:55:20You, too. Bye.

0:55:20 > 0:55:25I mean, they've done all this for the baby. And that was my main concern, of course.

0:55:25 > 0:55:28It'll improve their health, but this was about Eva.

0:55:28 > 0:55:32They've done it for her, so she is going to be a much healthier girl at the end of all of this.

0:55:34 > 0:55:40After quitting their unhealthy habits, our mums-to-be went on to enjoy the rest of their pregnancies.

0:55:40 > 0:55:44And the result of giving up their unhealthy lifestyles?

0:55:44 > 0:55:46Beautiful, bouncing babies.

0:55:47 > 0:55:51This experience has been life-changing. I'll never forget it.

0:55:51 > 0:55:54Having a baby, quitting smoking -

0:55:54 > 0:55:57it's been a crazy year, but it's been a good one.

0:55:57 > 0:55:59Knowing that I quit when I was pregnant

0:55:59 > 0:56:02for her health, for her safety, really,

0:56:02 > 0:56:06it was one of the best experiences of my life, definitely.

0:56:07 > 0:56:11Ryan's going to have a fabulous childhood. And he's not going to be an obese child,

0:56:11 > 0:56:15he's going to have a good life, and knowing that the path I've started on now is going to

0:56:15 > 0:56:17help him get that way is a really nice feeling.

0:56:17 > 0:56:19People are very shocked.

0:56:19 > 0:56:23They're like, "She'll be back. She'll be back on it." No.

0:56:23 > 0:56:27That chapter in my life is finished, thank you.

0:56:27 > 0:56:29Me and Mum, there won't be as much arguments

0:56:29 > 0:56:32and we'll try to get on more for the baby,

0:56:32 > 0:56:38and not going out all the time and leaving her with the baby.

0:56:38 > 0:56:40I've actually quit.

0:56:40 > 0:56:44Lisa's been... Wow! She's an amazing woman.

0:56:44 > 0:56:47She's really great proper a help. I'm so grateful.

0:56:47 > 0:56:48Words can't even describe it.

0:56:48 > 0:56:51I don't think I would have done it without her.
