0:00:03 > 0:00:05The wellbeing industry is booming.

0:00:05 > 0:00:09More people seek alternative ways to cope with rising obesity,

0:00:09 > 0:00:10stress and depression.

0:00:10 > 0:00:13My stress levels have been getting heavier and heavier.

0:00:13 > 0:00:16I don't understand why I'm so stressed and I can't switch off.

0:00:16 > 0:00:19Heading for a retreat on an island in the South China Sea,

0:00:19 > 0:00:23Nick Knowles joins a group who are all seeking the antidote for the

0:00:23 > 0:00:25strains of modern life.

0:00:25 > 0:00:27Of course, this place down in Thailand says it can actually

0:00:27 > 0:00:30change your head around. Change your inner space around.

0:00:30 > 0:00:34How will the gang cope with a completely new way of living?

0:00:34 > 0:00:35I think that some of the participants

0:00:35 > 0:00:38didn't really know what they were getting into.

0:00:38 > 0:00:39It's almost cultish.

0:00:39 > 0:00:41I think it's going to be a challenge.

0:00:41 > 0:00:44Will 28 days of detox and alternative therapies be

0:00:44 > 0:00:46enough to change their lives?

0:00:46 > 0:00:49I don't think anybody would be surprised to find out I'm the

0:00:49 > 0:00:51least likely to be taking on this challenge.

0:00:51 > 0:00:53This is one kick-ass detox.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56Welcome to Thailand.

0:01:06 > 0:01:08Oh, you've started filming already, have you?

0:01:08 > 0:01:11Yeah, hello, mate. That's going to be like that on the screen now,

0:01:11 > 0:01:13isn't it? I don't know. How are you feeling?

0:01:13 > 0:01:16I'm good, yeah. You? Happy New Year. Yeah, yeah.

0:01:16 > 0:01:19Happy New Year, son. Where's Julian?

0:01:19 > 0:01:21He's... There he is. Is that all the baggage you've got?

0:01:21 > 0:01:24Yeah. That's it. Travelling light, son.

0:01:24 > 0:01:26I have a one-year-old son, but I'm 53 now.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29I'd like to be around when he grows up and there's not a lot of

0:01:29 > 0:01:32chance of that if I carry on at the speed I'm going at the moment.

0:01:32 > 0:01:36So I've got to find some way to get that under control.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39Of course, this place down in Thailand says it can actually change

0:01:39 > 0:01:41your head around and change your inner space around.

0:01:41 > 0:01:43I wasn't even aware I had an inner space.

0:01:43 > 0:01:47You've just had a long flight. You've got one hour to go.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50It's been all right. It's been very comfortable and nice.

0:01:50 > 0:01:53Very nice. You were snoring.

0:01:53 > 0:01:56You were snoring. Was I? Yeah, yeah, I must admit.

0:01:56 > 0:01:58And he had a lovely full breakfast, didn't you?

0:01:58 > 0:02:01Well, it was more a lunch, because if you think about it,

0:02:01 > 0:02:05we've skipped our breakfast time and moved on to lunch.

0:02:05 > 0:02:08We are eight hours ahead, so it's now...

0:02:08 > 0:02:10It's my birthday!

0:02:10 > 0:02:13Happy birthday, Bill. Happy birthday, Bill.

0:02:13 > 0:02:15Thank you. I spent my birthday on a plane.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18I have been at the doctor's and he's gave

0:02:18 > 0:02:20me a percentage of the next ten years.

0:02:20 > 0:02:24How much percentage I would have a heart attack.

0:02:24 > 0:02:28And the chance was 18%, which I thought was brilliant.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30But it should be 1%.

0:02:30 > 0:02:34I started driving a few years ago. I'm type II diabetic.

0:02:34 > 0:02:39I was diagnosed about a year ago. I take two tablets twice a day.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42I've heard that you can, by diet, can come off of those tablets.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45I'm an executive within media services.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47Incredibly stressful.

0:02:47 > 0:02:51I lost my mother two years ago, so I think all of that combined,

0:02:51 > 0:02:55I sort of feel as though I'd lost my way.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58I think it's... I found it difficult to find another job.

0:02:58 > 0:03:02So, again, I was... I feel that I'm blaming myself.

0:03:02 > 0:03:06I feel that I'm not of any significance.

0:03:06 > 0:03:08I just turned 47 in the last couple of weeks.

0:03:08 > 0:03:13I want to start my kind of new mission before I hit that 50.

0:03:13 > 0:03:15I think I need to change some of my lifestyle.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17I think I need to change my perspective on ME.

0:03:17 > 0:03:21You know, being a mother and a wife and holding down a job.

0:03:21 > 0:03:25You know, eventually, something gives and I think this is part of

0:03:25 > 0:03:28the reason why I wanted to come over here.

0:03:28 > 0:03:30I think probably to find Maggie again.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37This is how we arrived at the place, on a jetty.

0:03:37 > 0:03:40We are waiting to get the boat to take us out from

0:03:40 > 0:03:42Koh Samui to Ko Pha-Ngan.

0:03:42 > 0:03:44I don't even know if I'm pronouncing it right at the moment.

0:03:44 > 0:03:46I'm just going to watch the bags on board.

0:03:46 > 0:03:48We've lost the camera crew, cos

0:03:48 > 0:03:50we've also lost the camera equipment.

0:03:50 > 0:03:52So we're working on this little camera for the moment

0:03:52 > 0:03:53and maybe doing that tomorrow as well.

0:03:53 > 0:03:56But that's just the nature of travel in these parts of the world.

0:03:58 > 0:04:00We've arrived!

0:04:00 > 0:04:03Knowlesy, you get in the front, show the driver where we've got to go.

0:04:03 > 0:04:05LAUGHTER

0:04:05 > 0:04:07Tell him where to drive.

0:04:07 > 0:04:11After travelling 9,800km by planes, trains and automobiles,

0:04:11 > 0:04:13and the occasional speedboat,

0:04:13 > 0:04:16the first of the nine arrive on the island.

0:04:20 > 0:04:23So I'm guessing this is the really touristy end and we're heading

0:04:23 > 0:04:26off out to the countryside. Yeah.

0:04:26 > 0:04:29He's going to drive through the Himalayas to little villages.

0:04:33 > 0:04:36We're only passing between the days of daylight, aren't we?

0:04:36 > 0:04:40So we will arrive in the evening. Yeah, right. Who told you that?

0:04:40 > 0:04:44The detox programme the gang will undertake over the next month

0:04:44 > 0:04:48is strictly supervised by a team of medical professionals and experts.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51Have you put rocks in this bag? It's getting heavier and heavier.

0:04:51 > 0:04:54Mind yourself when you step off, there is still people whizzing by.

0:04:54 > 0:04:56It's a big jump down there, isn't there?

0:04:56 > 0:04:59Having made their way across Ko Pha-Ngan, the gang settle in -

0:04:59 > 0:05:01looking forward to a welcome meal.

0:05:06 > 0:05:08See that? That's cool. Nice little shower room.

0:05:08 > 0:05:12I can definitely chill in here. I like the bamboo stuff going on.

0:05:12 > 0:05:13Yeah.

0:05:13 > 0:05:18To their surprise, the vegan pre-cleanse starts immediately.

0:05:18 > 0:05:21You all right, Milton? Milton, stop eating.

0:05:21 > 0:05:26Knowlesy, that's yours. How's that, all right?

0:05:26 > 0:05:30See, I look at that and sort of think...

0:05:30 > 0:05:33It would take more energy eating it than what it's worth, really.

0:05:33 > 0:05:35Really? It tastes nice. Does it?

0:05:35 > 0:05:38It's all beginning to dawn on me a little bit. Are you worried?

0:05:38 > 0:05:40Really? I, well, yeah.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43No breakfast tomorrow. No.

0:05:43 > 0:05:46And then when we get back, we've got fruit salad.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49Bit worried about it, mate. Don't worry about it, Jules.

0:05:49 > 0:05:52It'll be fine. It'll be good for you. It be character-forming.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55I've never not eaten in my life. I know. I know.

0:05:55 > 0:05:58And you get a bit emotional when you don't eat. I do.

0:05:58 > 0:06:00I get a bit grumpy. I get a bit emotional.

0:06:00 > 0:06:02What are you laughing at?

0:06:02 > 0:06:04Yeah, let's have you, sausage!

0:06:18 > 0:06:22Yeah, so here we are, in Thailand, doing the detox.

0:06:22 > 0:06:25Something I would have never have gone for off my own back,

0:06:25 > 0:06:29but Nick cared about it and was interested in it.

0:06:29 > 0:06:31He said he was going to do it and he invited

0:06:31 > 0:06:34me and Billy to come along and go through it with him.

0:06:34 > 0:06:37There's not much wrong with that, is there?

0:06:37 > 0:06:39I could wake up to that each morning.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41Although this is actually the noisiest place.

0:06:41 > 0:06:43It looks paradise - actually, it's the noisiest place

0:06:43 > 0:06:45I've ever stayed on holiday.

0:06:45 > 0:06:49Yesterday, when they came in, we got given a programme of what we've got

0:06:49 > 0:06:52to do. It's quite intense. It's quite full-on.

0:06:52 > 0:06:54Which I didn't think it was going to be.

0:06:54 > 0:06:58Cats, dogs, mopeds, cars in the middle of the night, boats coming

0:06:58 > 0:07:01in with the noisiest engines that you've ever heard in your lives.

0:07:01 > 0:07:04It's quite regimented. We've got, like, a schedule to go to.

0:07:04 > 0:07:08Animals that are, like, two inches long producing noises like

0:07:08 > 0:07:11they should be from a 13-foot-long dragon.

0:07:12 > 0:07:15I'm not convinced yet whether it's,

0:07:15 > 0:07:18whether I should have yet or not, but we will see.

0:07:18 > 0:07:20Only time will tell.

0:07:26 > 0:07:30Overnight, the rest of the gang has arrived.

0:07:30 > 0:07:33And they get to know each other on the way to the hospital.

0:07:33 > 0:07:37I stopped working about two years ago with burn-out.

0:07:37 > 0:07:43I got up in the morning one day and was kind of just going, "Oh, God.

0:07:43 > 0:07:44"I really need some help."

0:07:44 > 0:07:47You know, I'd come here and I wanted to get healthy,

0:07:47 > 0:07:49but I was still finding myself drawn to eating the unhealthy

0:07:49 > 0:07:51stuff and still gaining weight.

0:07:51 > 0:07:54Oh, I haven't opened it yet.

0:07:54 > 0:07:56I am a police officer.

0:07:56 > 0:07:58I've been doing that for eight years now.

0:07:58 > 0:08:02I was shaking and... struggling to breathe.

0:08:02 > 0:08:05I went to the doctor. I couldn't stop crying.

0:08:05 > 0:08:07No, no. It's the production one.

0:08:07 > 0:08:09Yeah.

0:08:09 > 0:08:13He thought I was suffering from anxiety and depression.

0:08:13 > 0:08:17Before being allowed to undertake the extreme nature of

0:08:17 > 0:08:21the 28-day programme, the gang will be overseen using conventional

0:08:21 > 0:08:24medicine and have to pass a full physical.

0:08:26 > 0:08:31And any ongoing medical conditions are checked as an extra precaution.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34Eight years ago, I went in for what is considered

0:08:34 > 0:08:37a very standard eye surgery that went horribly wrong and I

0:08:37 > 0:08:44developed a chronic eye disease from it that has caused me

0:08:44 > 0:08:47eight years of severe pain,

0:08:47 > 0:08:54very little sleep and can eventually lead to me being legally blind.

0:08:54 > 0:08:58In fact, I am pretty much there already with the right eye.

0:09:00 > 0:09:05I'm very hopeful that I will find healing through this programme.

0:09:07 > 0:09:11Some of the gang are suffering less from physical problems, however.

0:09:11 > 0:09:13Yeah.

0:09:13 > 0:09:18I'm hoping to find some guidance and a purpose.

0:09:18 > 0:09:21Your blood pressure is good. Thank you.

0:09:21 > 0:09:24You know, I'm 32,

0:09:24 > 0:09:26and I've got no direction.

0:09:26 > 0:09:27OK, thank you.

0:09:28 > 0:09:33The depression that just comes, I just close off

0:09:33 > 0:09:36and I can't really function.

0:09:36 > 0:09:39I worry a lot about things that I can't control.

0:09:39 > 0:09:42You know what the good news is, Katherine?

0:09:42 > 0:09:45After this, you can have water. Yeah, OK. After this?

0:09:45 > 0:09:47I'm so excited.

0:09:47 > 0:09:50It all just kind of accumulates and falls into a problem

0:09:50 > 0:09:56where it creates anxiety and depression and worrying and, yeah.

0:10:00 > 0:10:04We've had our weight, we've had high blood pressure.

0:10:04 > 0:10:08And our height and now they're going to take some blood

0:10:08 > 0:10:12and then, I believe, a chest X-ray afterwards.

0:10:12 > 0:10:17It's all getting really exciting. And more nervous.

0:10:17 > 0:10:21It's the results of these tests that will be used to judge whether

0:10:21 > 0:10:25the programme has been a success.

0:10:25 > 0:10:28It's possible that my blood pressure might be high,

0:10:28 > 0:10:30cos I've been sitting talking to Billy.

0:10:30 > 0:10:33He makes my blood pressure very high.

0:10:33 > 0:10:36OK, let me have a check of your lung and your heart.

0:10:36 > 0:10:40It's because I'm fat. Keep your pee-pee.

0:10:40 > 0:10:42Yeah, I don't think...

0:10:42 > 0:10:47Yeah, I'm not sure that I'm going to be able to produce any.

0:10:47 > 0:10:49Try first.

0:10:49 > 0:10:53Yeah, but I haven't drunk for like six, seven hours.

0:10:53 > 0:10:55You're not coming to the toilet with me.

0:10:55 > 0:10:57Where do you think you're going?

0:10:57 > 0:11:01I'm going to go in here and I'll see you in a minute.

0:11:05 > 0:11:08Amazingly, successful.

0:11:10 > 0:11:14As you sit here in a hospital so close all these health resorts.

0:11:14 > 0:11:16I mean, a lot of the stuff, it seems to me that

0:11:16 > 0:11:18a lot of the stuff is fairly straightforward anyway.

0:11:18 > 0:11:20If you eat less fat and less meat and, you know,

0:11:20 > 0:11:23you eat a healthier diet, you'll be a healthier person.

0:11:23 > 0:11:24Yes, exactly.

0:11:24 > 0:11:28So, yes, but the other extreme is we have people who believe in

0:11:28 > 0:11:31taking garlic instead of antibiotics and they come in with

0:11:31 > 0:11:34a garlic clove stuck in their ear that they can't get out.

0:11:34 > 0:11:37We've had quite a few of them.

0:11:37 > 0:11:40My understanding really is what they're doing wrong is

0:11:40 > 0:11:43they're supposed to crush the garlic

0:11:43 > 0:11:46before they put in their ear, before it can effective. I don't know.

0:11:46 > 0:11:50That's not my field of expertise. No. Oh, yeah.

0:11:50 > 0:11:53Right, thanks.

0:11:53 > 0:11:55The tests all done,

0:11:55 > 0:11:58they head back to the retreat to wait for the results.

0:11:59 > 0:12:01HORN BEEPS

0:12:01 > 0:12:04And as soon as they return, they are rushed straight into

0:12:04 > 0:12:07a meeting with the camps' mentors.

0:12:07 > 0:12:09Welcome to the retreat, guys.

0:12:09 > 0:12:11Welcome.

0:12:11 > 0:12:15The inspiration came from me meeting this guy out here

0:12:15 > 0:12:20and we want you to experience, hopefully, what we've experienced.

0:12:20 > 0:12:22You know, we both came here with different issues

0:12:22 > 0:12:23and different problems.

0:12:23 > 0:12:26We're going to be here as mentors and supporters.

0:12:26 > 0:12:29If you've ever got any questions, just come and ask us.

0:12:32 > 0:12:35So, my name is Dominique. I am the detox manager at Orion.

0:12:35 > 0:12:37Today, we're going to talk about the detox.

0:12:37 > 0:12:40OK, so what you're going to do, today you are on pre-cleanse.

0:12:40 > 0:12:44So you are eating raw fruit to prepare your body,

0:12:44 > 0:12:47to alkalise your body, alkalise yours cells. To have

0:12:47 > 0:12:51a little bit less pain, to have less withdrawn symptoms,

0:12:51 > 0:12:54because if you don't prepare, you will have a big headache,

0:12:54 > 0:12:57nausea and all sorts of symptoms.

0:12:57 > 0:12:59So we're trying to prepare you a little bit.

0:12:59 > 0:13:03Here we do yoga, we go to the sauna, so we sweat the toxins out.

0:13:03 > 0:13:06You do two colema a day. So you're going to clean your colon

0:13:06 > 0:13:11two times per day, which is going to make the process of detoxification

0:13:11 > 0:13:13go faster. OK, so don't worry.

0:13:13 > 0:13:15You're going to feel good at some point.

0:13:15 > 0:13:18This is going too far.

0:13:18 > 0:13:21I want to start with a little present.

0:13:21 > 0:13:23A little liver-flush drink.

0:13:23 > 0:13:25Thank you.

0:13:25 > 0:13:27Thanks for that.

0:13:27 > 0:13:29We are still giving you the coconut in the morning,

0:13:29 > 0:13:32to give you some sugar, give you some electrolytes, minerals.

0:13:32 > 0:13:34And we give you a broth and a tea at night.

0:13:34 > 0:13:36And you have all this food, all these supplements.

0:13:36 > 0:13:39The supplements are the green pills.

0:13:39 > 0:13:43This is spirulina, chlorella, alfalfa, moringa, wheatgrass.

0:13:43 > 0:13:46All these super greens you need to nourish your cells and tissues.

0:13:46 > 0:13:49So this is, like, your food, OK?

0:13:49 > 0:13:51Then the chomper are the yellow pills.

0:13:51 > 0:13:55Those are made with a bunch of herbs like triphala, tumeric.

0:13:55 > 0:13:57You can smell the difference. Those are intestinal cleaners.

0:13:57 > 0:14:00So they're going to clean your intestinal tract.

0:14:00 > 0:14:02Today, we are chilling. We're still on pre-cleanse.

0:14:02 > 0:14:04We're going to have another nice meal.

0:14:04 > 0:14:06Another liver flush tonight.

0:14:06 > 0:14:10Enjoy the food while you can and then tomorrow the party starts.

0:14:13 > 0:14:15I have to say, it's the one part of this whole process that

0:14:15 > 0:14:18I've actually been really dreading.

0:14:18 > 0:14:21The starving myself I can deal with.

0:14:21 > 0:14:23It's doing the colema, colonic sort of thing.

0:14:23 > 0:14:26Yeah, I'm not looking forward to it at all. No.

0:14:26 > 0:14:28I think I'll panic.

0:14:28 > 0:14:31We could have gone to the clinic and we could have had it done there

0:14:31 > 0:14:33by a professional. You've got to do it twice a day,

0:14:33 > 0:14:35so you can't go to hospital twice a day, can you?

0:14:35 > 0:14:37After the first time you might be all right with it.

0:14:37 > 0:14:40You may not be in as much panic.

0:14:40 > 0:14:43You think, "Oh, that weren't as bad as you thought it was."

0:14:43 > 0:14:45But it's knowing how much water,

0:14:45 > 0:14:48once you get the cramps and you've got to stop and you've got to do this.

0:14:48 > 0:14:50I don't know.

0:14:51 > 0:14:54It's a worry. But I expect...

0:14:54 > 0:14:56I just don't fancy having a tube stuck up my BLEEP.

0:14:56 > 0:14:58I mean, it's as simple as that, really.

0:14:58 > 0:15:00I think that some of the participants,

0:15:00 > 0:15:03they didn't really know what they were getting into.

0:15:03 > 0:15:06They knew they were coming for a transformation and detox,

0:15:06 > 0:15:09but I see the faces and I explain certain things,

0:15:09 > 0:15:13like the shakes and the colema, especially.

0:15:13 > 0:15:15I think a lot of them are scared right now.

0:15:20 > 0:15:23Similar sort of building techniques.

0:15:23 > 0:15:26I've had quite a lot of indigestion problems at home.

0:15:26 > 0:15:30Having cameras down and off to the doctor's and off to hospitals.

0:15:30 > 0:15:34It's all a dietary thing, so I knew I had to change my diet.

0:15:34 > 0:15:37Hello. Hello, I'm Shakti.

0:15:37 > 0:15:40Oh, hello. Nice to meet you.

0:15:40 > 0:15:42So that's our little crowd over there.

0:15:42 > 0:15:44Interesting from our point of view, cos we meet

0:15:44 > 0:15:47a lot of people for whom this is the natural environment.

0:15:47 > 0:15:50That's not really, that's not us. Have you met Bill yet?

0:15:50 > 0:15:53We think he is in a constant meditative state,

0:15:53 > 0:15:56cos I was asking someone to explain to me what meditation is and they

0:15:56 > 0:15:59were saying that because I can't imagine not having thoughts...

0:15:59 > 0:16:02And they said, "Well, it's not that you don't have thoughts,

0:16:02 > 0:16:04"you don't hang on to them. They come in and you let them flow out."

0:16:04 > 0:16:06Yeah. Well, that's exactly how he works.

0:16:06 > 0:16:09Thoughts come in and float straight out his mouth, without any

0:16:09 > 0:16:12kind of thought attachment. No filter. Or filter at all.

0:16:12 > 0:16:15So he's in a constant meditative state - as far as I can tell.

0:16:17 > 0:16:21I associate the idea of meditation and things with that sort of,

0:16:21 > 0:16:24for want of a better expression, hippydom,

0:16:24 > 0:16:26which is like dropping out of society.

0:16:26 > 0:16:30So I can't associate actually using it in everyday...

0:16:30 > 0:16:33Yeah, that's the key, you can use it in everyday life,

0:16:33 > 0:16:35because everything is a meditation.

0:16:35 > 0:16:37Everything that you do, like in t'ai chi,

0:16:37 > 0:16:39they're like moving meditations.

0:16:39 > 0:16:44Just focusing your mind and you train your mind to do what

0:16:44 > 0:16:47you want it to do. OK, I see I have a lot to learn.

0:16:47 > 0:16:50As the gang start to realise the extent of the challenge ahead,

0:16:50 > 0:16:55Dominique prepares the last meal they'll have for seven days.

0:16:55 > 0:16:57We have our spaghetti.

0:16:57 > 0:16:59I can add some colours in it, some flowers...

0:16:59 > 0:17:03Even though the first week of the retreat is all about not eating,

0:17:03 > 0:17:08the complete programme is all about providing your body with nutrients

0:17:08 > 0:17:09from a solely plant-based menu,

0:17:09 > 0:17:13to supercharge the detox and revitalise the body's cells.

0:17:13 > 0:17:15Finished.

0:17:16 > 0:17:18Magic!

0:17:18 > 0:17:20Healthy fast food.

0:17:20 > 0:17:21SHE LAUGHS

0:17:24 > 0:17:27This is the last supper, like on death row, you know?

0:17:27 > 0:17:30And they chose pad Thai, raw pad Thai,

0:17:30 > 0:17:32and some time, they are coming.

0:17:32 > 0:17:34Wow!

0:17:34 > 0:17:36I can think of worse places to be, though.

0:17:39 > 0:17:40LAUGHTER

0:17:49 > 0:17:50Brilliant. I will pass this on.

0:17:50 > 0:17:54Enjoy your meal. Nice big portion.

0:17:54 > 0:17:55Happy about that.

0:17:55 > 0:17:57Can I...? Steal some cheese.

0:18:02 > 0:18:03You do? I do, yeah.

0:18:10 > 0:18:13As evening settles over Ko Pha Ngan,

0:18:13 > 0:18:15the results come back from the hospital

0:18:15 > 0:18:18and it is good news for all but one.

0:18:19 > 0:18:21Good morning.

0:18:21 > 0:18:25We were given these little hand cams

0:18:25 > 0:18:28to kind of record anything

0:18:28 > 0:18:32that we want to say or feel like saying.

0:18:34 > 0:18:36Day one. Just wanted to let you know

0:18:36 > 0:18:40that Milton is going to be on a different programme than you.

0:18:40 > 0:18:42He is not going be fasting today.

0:18:42 > 0:18:44We are going to make him do a longer pre-cleanse,

0:18:44 > 0:18:46just to be safe.

0:18:46 > 0:18:49He has all the chances to control and reverse his diabetes,

0:18:49 > 0:18:51so we are going to do it the proper way.

0:18:51 > 0:18:54We are treating Milton in a way

0:18:54 > 0:18:56that is different from Western practice,

0:18:56 > 0:18:57yes, this is true.

0:18:59 > 0:19:02And, you know, the Western world, the Western medicine,

0:19:02 > 0:19:03they don't know about this.

0:19:03 > 0:19:05They are not trained for this.

0:19:05 > 0:19:08They are trained to treat patients with invasive surgery,

0:19:08 > 0:19:10which we need a lot of the time -

0:19:10 > 0:19:13I'm not saying we don't need conventional medicine, we do.

0:19:13 > 0:19:16A lot of people are sick, they have pain,

0:19:16 > 0:19:18they need painkillers.

0:19:18 > 0:19:19But here, that is not what we do.

0:19:19 > 0:19:22So how do you feel this morning, waking up on this first day,

0:19:22 > 0:19:24where there will be no meal?

0:19:24 > 0:19:27All right. Fine. Don't know if I am so bothered about that.

0:19:27 > 0:19:29Very headachey last night, and through the night and this morning.

0:19:29 > 0:19:32Yeah - withdrawal symptoms.

0:19:32 > 0:19:35Some of you smoke, I think, yeah? Yeah.

0:19:35 > 0:19:36You quit? Yeah.

0:19:36 > 0:19:37Who else smokes?

0:19:37 > 0:19:40OK - so this is the most difficult part.

0:19:40 > 0:19:42Don't tell my folks. It is all top secret.

0:19:42 > 0:19:44LAUGHTER

0:19:44 > 0:19:47The nicotine will be in your system for about two or three days.

0:19:47 > 0:19:49It is the first day of the fast.

0:19:49 > 0:19:51You're grumpy, you regret doing this,

0:19:51 > 0:19:56you are waiting for that meal that will not come, so it is difficult.

0:19:56 > 0:19:58The first day is difficult.

0:19:58 > 0:20:01Here there is a restaurant, so they can see and smell the food,

0:20:01 > 0:20:02that is also very difficult.

0:20:02 > 0:20:04Expect some headaches -

0:20:04 > 0:20:06people that drink a lot of coffee also,

0:20:06 > 0:20:09expect to be a little bit tired, but mostly hungry.

0:20:09 > 0:20:11The body is going to burn the sugar inside of you.

0:20:11 > 0:20:13You still have reserves.

0:20:13 > 0:20:16But that is not going to be for so long, it will be just today.

0:20:16 > 0:20:18Then the body goes into another mode.

0:20:18 > 0:20:20The liver is going to produce ketones

0:20:20 > 0:20:22to nourish the brain and other tissues,

0:20:22 > 0:20:24so today don't expect too much.

0:20:24 > 0:20:26You might be a little bit grumpy.

0:20:26 > 0:20:27GRUFFLY: No, we're not!

0:20:27 > 0:20:30LAUGHTER

0:20:30 > 0:20:34But it's perfectly normal. Just embrace it.

0:20:34 > 0:20:38Usually, the thinnest people have the most difficulties

0:20:38 > 0:20:42when it comes to being tired, because you have less fat,

0:20:42 > 0:20:43you have less food for your body,

0:20:43 > 0:20:45so usually, you get a little bit more tired.

0:20:45 > 0:20:48The more fat you've got, the more energy you have.

0:20:48 > 0:20:49COUGHING

0:20:49 > 0:20:51What are you looking at ME for, then?

0:20:51 > 0:20:53LAUGHTER

0:20:53 > 0:20:55Happened to be looking in that direction, that's all.

0:20:55 > 0:20:59You guys are going to come to me, "Let's go for a run!"

0:20:59 > 0:21:01Today, we're going to do some colemas.

0:21:02 > 0:21:04Yay! Exciting.

0:21:04 > 0:21:07You're possibly the only person who does get excited when you say that.

0:21:07 > 0:21:10But first, before they can do the colema,

0:21:10 > 0:21:13Dominique gives them a masterclass.

0:21:13 > 0:21:14In your room you have a kettle.

0:21:14 > 0:21:17You fill it up with water, and you boil it.

0:21:17 > 0:21:20OK? And then you prepare for the colema.

0:21:22 > 0:21:23Let's go. Let's go.

0:21:24 > 0:21:26This is the colema tip.

0:21:26 > 0:21:29The part that has holes is the part that goes inside of you.

0:21:29 > 0:21:32There's a side with no holes, side with holes,

0:21:32 > 0:21:35and then you will connect with this connecter here,

0:21:35 > 0:21:36this tube to this tube,

0:21:36 > 0:21:39so you need to plug it in, cos it's going to be hard,

0:21:39 > 0:21:41and it's good that it's harder,

0:21:41 > 0:21:43cos you don't want it to fall during the colema -

0:21:43 > 0:21:44so this is good, OK?

0:21:44 > 0:21:47This will go inside the colema board

0:21:47 > 0:21:49and then the tube will go outside of the colema board,

0:21:49 > 0:21:54so there is a hole - you plug it in, plug your tube,

0:21:54 > 0:21:55and that's it, we're done.

0:21:55 > 0:21:56OK?

0:21:56 > 0:22:01A little trick - I like to have my butt-cleaner here, close to me.

0:22:01 > 0:22:03LAUGHTER This is ridiculous.

0:22:03 > 0:22:07And by massaging, you're going to move that solidified food

0:22:07 > 0:22:10that is inside of you that you want out, OK?

0:22:10 > 0:22:12And it's going to be released with the water after.

0:22:12 > 0:22:15OK? If you feel like you have a bump somewhere,

0:22:15 > 0:22:17like, a little ball, that might be a blockage.

0:22:17 > 0:22:20Sometimes it takes days for it to come out.

0:22:20 > 0:22:23I've seen, like, balls coming after eight days of fast.

0:22:23 > 0:22:27Especially if your balls are going to come out.

0:22:27 > 0:22:28Big surprise.

0:22:28 > 0:22:29BILLY LAUGHS

0:22:29 > 0:22:32Are you scared? Yeah. Frightened.

0:22:32 > 0:22:34I was frightened the first time, yeah.

0:22:34 > 0:22:38I don't know - I expected something to sort of...suck it out,

0:22:38 > 0:22:40But it's all gravity, isn't it?

0:22:40 > 0:22:43All gravity, yes, but it's more gentle for you.

0:22:43 > 0:22:45It's more gentle for you

0:22:45 > 0:22:48than having the machine with the pressure, definitely.

0:22:48 > 0:22:50And then you're alone - you don't have somebody with you.

0:22:50 > 0:22:52It's more private.

0:22:52 > 0:22:55I think I'd rather have someone with me, Jules...

0:22:55 > 0:22:58Why does he...? He keeps on asking me to help him!

0:22:58 > 0:23:01In the room? You live next door, don't you?

0:23:01 > 0:23:04I think you have a door in between your rooms.

0:23:04 > 0:23:07You're not seriously expecting him to help you during this?

0:23:07 > 0:23:09He can talk to me, make me feel...

0:23:09 > 0:23:11I wouldn't want...

0:23:11 > 0:23:14I don't even want to be on the same campus whilst you're doing it,

0:23:14 > 0:23:15let alone in the same building.

0:23:15 > 0:23:16All right.

0:23:16 > 0:23:18But if I do panic, you'd be there for me, wouldn't you?

0:23:18 > 0:23:22Well, really, during this, no. Not when you're in mid-flow.

0:23:22 > 0:23:25If I'm in mid-flow, I won't be panicking.

0:23:25 > 0:23:27I'll be happy, won't I?

0:23:27 > 0:23:29I'll...I'll be there, on the other side of the door.

0:23:29 > 0:23:32All right. Note to self.

0:23:34 > 0:23:39Going into a detox after Christmas and New Year's,

0:23:39 > 0:23:41maybe not a good idea.

0:23:41 > 0:23:43SHE LAUGHS

0:23:43 > 0:23:46I definitely think it would have been good

0:23:46 > 0:23:50to do a week of healthy raw food,

0:23:50 > 0:23:54and no partying before starting this.

0:23:54 > 0:23:57This is one kick-ass detox.

0:23:57 > 0:23:58Let's just get on with it

0:23:58 > 0:24:00and not talk to each other about it ever again.

0:24:00 > 0:24:02No, OK.

0:24:02 > 0:24:05Don't tell any of the lads on the site that we've done this either.

0:24:05 > 0:24:07It's all right to talk about it.

0:24:07 > 0:24:10It's if we help each other out, we won't tell anybody.

0:24:17 > 0:24:21Yesterday I showed them a movie. Not all of them went.

0:24:21 > 0:24:25We are missing some...people.

0:24:25 > 0:24:26Nick disappeared.

0:24:26 > 0:24:27Some of them are tired,

0:24:27 > 0:24:30so I think that we are going to rethink the schedule.

0:24:30 > 0:24:32It's OK - some of them are not young.

0:24:32 > 0:24:36'This could be the first generation of children in the United States

0:24:36 > 0:24:38'that lives less than its parents.

0:24:38 > 0:24:42'We have spent $2.2 trillion a year on health care.

0:24:42 > 0:24:45'Over five times more than the defence budget.'

0:24:45 > 0:24:47So maybe I'll just give them the movies

0:24:47 > 0:24:48and they can watch them in their room,

0:24:48 > 0:24:51or maybe we can watch them later during the month -

0:24:51 > 0:24:54it's no problem, as long as they watch those movies,

0:24:54 > 0:24:56because it talks about their issues.

0:24:56 > 0:24:58At the morning meeting, last night's film

0:24:58 > 0:25:01provokes a spirited discussion about what we eat.

0:25:01 > 0:25:03Because you've got this diabetes... Yeah.

0:25:03 > 0:25:05You saw that film last night -

0:25:05 > 0:25:10do you think you will revert your diabetes, turn it back?

0:25:10 > 0:25:13150%. That is what I'm here to do.

0:25:13 > 0:25:15Get my head down and see if it works, you know?

0:25:15 > 0:25:18Which is going to take a little bit of time. Yeah.

0:25:18 > 0:25:20So when you go back home, will you will eat them raw...?

0:25:20 > 0:25:22Yeah, I will. A bit early to say yet, isn't it?

0:25:22 > 0:25:24We are only just starting into the...

0:25:24 > 0:25:27At this stage... You never saw the film -

0:25:27 > 0:25:31the film actually showed the people that have had diabetes

0:25:31 > 0:25:34have gone on this root factor of food and everything

0:25:34 > 0:25:37and their diabetes has turned right around.

0:25:37 > 0:25:39Was that for everybody? I reckon...

0:25:39 > 0:25:41Cos that's a big claim, if you are saying that now,

0:25:41 > 0:25:44that basically anybody who has diabetes goes on a diet...

0:25:44 > 0:25:45Diabetes Type 2.

0:25:45 > 0:25:47Type 2. That's what I've got.

0:25:47 > 0:25:50Anybody on Type II diabetes will be cured if you go...

0:25:50 > 0:25:51Can reverse it, yeah.

0:25:51 > 0:25:53You can control it and then reverse it,

0:25:53 > 0:25:54if you stick to the diet.

0:25:54 > 0:25:56But it's not a diet - it's a lifestyle.

0:25:56 > 0:25:59The Western diseases, they are diet-related.

0:25:59 > 0:26:01If you put the wrong fuel in your body,

0:26:01 > 0:26:04you will break your engine, and I repeat that all the time.

0:26:04 > 0:26:06It's not just meat -

0:26:06 > 0:26:08it's all the processed foods and all the sugars.

0:26:08 > 0:26:10It's not rocket science when you think about it.

0:26:13 > 0:26:16You see one film about how it's bad to eat meat, then all of a sudden

0:26:16 > 0:26:17everyone is evangelical about how to eat meat.

0:26:17 > 0:26:20Everybody has got an agenda when they make a film.

0:26:20 > 0:26:22When vegetarians make a film, they've got an agenda.

0:26:22 > 0:26:25When meat eaters make a film, they've got an agenda. Yeah.

0:26:25 > 0:26:28So you can't just go, "Oh, I've just seen a film and..."

0:26:28 > 0:26:29No. "Meat's bad and there you go."

0:26:29 > 0:26:33They make it, they tell you what they want you to hear.

0:26:33 > 0:26:35To be honest I didn't go and watch it,

0:26:35 > 0:26:36because I knew what it was going to be about.

0:26:36 > 0:26:38I want to make my own mind up.

0:26:38 > 0:26:40It almost cultish, the way they try and...

0:26:40 > 0:26:42It is a little bit. ..almost brainwash you.

0:26:42 > 0:26:44They say you've got to listen to both sides,

0:26:44 > 0:26:47so what you should do is watch a film about being vegetarian,

0:26:47 > 0:26:48like the film last night,

0:26:48 > 0:26:50and then a film about how good meat is for you.

0:26:50 > 0:26:52Yeah. Watch both.

0:26:52 > 0:26:54But they're not showing films about how meat is good for you.

0:26:54 > 0:26:58Are you at a stage where it's making you want to give up?

0:26:58 > 0:27:01Yeah. You know, I am definitely quite negative

0:27:01 > 0:27:02about the whole process,

0:27:02 > 0:27:05because I'm, I guess, questioning the process.

0:27:05 > 0:27:09Yeah. And that, ultimately, makes me think, "Why am I doing it?"

0:27:09 > 0:27:14Pausing for thought for the first time in 48 hours,

0:27:14 > 0:27:16Nick and Julian are just realising

0:27:16 > 0:27:20that the fasting and colemas, supplements and yoga

0:27:20 > 0:27:23are not going to let up for seven whole days.

0:27:23 > 0:27:25We've decided that what we are going to do is,

0:27:25 > 0:27:29because it's a bit monotonous, there's a hotel up the road,

0:27:29 > 0:27:33just around the bay, me and him are going to sit by the pool.

0:27:33 > 0:27:35Neither of us have got anything to do for the next two hours. No.

0:27:35 > 0:27:38We've been excused yoga. So we are going to go and sit by the pool.

0:27:38 > 0:27:40Not drink anything, not eat anything,

0:27:40 > 0:27:41just...a different location,

0:27:41 > 0:27:45just to try and get away from the conspiracy theory...

0:27:45 > 0:27:47A change is as good as a rest.

0:27:47 > 0:27:49LAUGHING: Come on, then.

0:27:51 > 0:27:52Next time on The Retreat...

0:27:52 > 0:27:57Your body can go further than you probably think, yeah?

0:27:58 > 0:28:00My bloods and that was a little high.

0:28:00 > 0:28:02Now they said I should do a new blood test.

0:28:02 > 0:28:04You don't think it's changed in one week?

0:28:04 > 0:28:07I'm not getting into the yoga.

0:28:07 > 0:28:08Slightly dull vision and...

0:28:09 > 0:28:11I just want to stay in bed.

0:28:11 > 0:28:14That's all we have to eat a day.

0:28:14 > 0:28:15I've got to be honest,

0:28:15 > 0:28:17the main thing that is irritating me at the moment

0:28:17 > 0:28:20is Billy's happiness. NICK LAUGHS

0:28:20 > 0:28:25First of all, I'm going to put the tube into coconut oil

0:28:25 > 0:28:27to make it a little bit smoother

0:28:27 > 0:28:29for when it enters my butt.

0:28:33 > 0:28:36Before attempting any of the detox techniques or practices

0:28:36 > 0:28:38demonstrated in The Retreat,

0:28:38 > 0:28:41you are advised to seek out your doctor's advice.
