0:00:03 > 0:00:04The wellbeing industry is booming.

0:00:04 > 0:00:09More people seek alternative ways to cope with rising obesity,

0:00:09 > 0:00:10stress and depression.

0:00:10 > 0:00:12My stress level's been getting heavier and heavier.

0:00:12 > 0:00:15I don't understand why I'm so stressed and I can't switch off.

0:00:15 > 0:00:18Heading for a retreat on an island in the

0:00:18 > 0:00:22South China Sea, Nick Knowles joins a group who are all seeking

0:00:22 > 0:00:25the antidote for the strains of modern life.

0:00:25 > 0:00:28This place down in Thailand says it can actually change your head

0:00:28 > 0:00:30around, change your inner space around.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33How will the gang cope with a completely new way of living?

0:00:33 > 0:00:36I think that some of the participants didn't really

0:00:36 > 0:00:38know what they were getting into. It's almost Celtic.

0:00:38 > 0:00:40I think it's going to be a challenge.

0:00:40 > 0:00:44Will 28 days of detox and alternative therapies be

0:00:44 > 0:00:46enough to change their lives?

0:00:46 > 0:00:49I don't think anyone will be surprised to find out I'm the

0:00:49 > 0:00:51least likely person to be taking on this challenge.

0:00:51 > 0:00:56This is one kick-ass detox. Welcome to Thailand!

0:01:04 > 0:01:07I don't like being at the back. I've seen it in the films.

0:01:07 > 0:01:09They take the back man out first!

0:01:17 > 0:01:21At the halfway mark of the retreat and with the fast becoming a distant

0:01:21 > 0:01:25memory, Nick and the boys set out for an early-morning adventure.

0:01:25 > 0:01:29Oh, look at the sun through the trees as well. Good timing.

0:01:31 > 0:01:32You all right?

0:01:33 > 0:01:34HE STUTTERS

0:01:37 > 0:01:40Sweating profusely. Hold that for me a second.

0:01:42 > 0:01:46Am I living? You passed away about halfway up.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49My general fitness is not what it used to be. Well done, son.

0:01:56 > 0:01:59It's like Jurassic Park - all this tropical forest where you

0:01:59 > 0:02:03could imagine dinosaurs moving through the jungle here.

0:02:03 > 0:02:04It's fabulous, isn't it?

0:02:08 > 0:02:09Amazing!

0:02:13 > 0:02:14Hoo-hoo!

0:02:16 > 0:02:20Feel a bit like Leo DiCaprio. Leo DiCapriadio.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23What's round there, then? Found the beach, didn't he?

0:02:23 > 0:02:25I think Knowles is going for a swim.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35While the boys refresh themselves with a swim,

0:02:35 > 0:02:38it's the 11th early-morning walk for Milton and Kathy.

0:02:40 > 0:02:44Despite still being on his fast, Milton is determined to keep

0:02:44 > 0:02:48increasing their distance, so Dominique has a quick catch-up

0:02:48 > 0:02:52to check he's not going too hard for a man with type II diabetes.

0:02:52 > 0:02:58I mean, you were losing weight last week. Yeah. Eating. Yeah.

0:02:58 > 0:03:03But now, on the fast, it goes fast. But how do you feel inside?

0:03:03 > 0:03:06I mean, now that the end is coming? The end is coming.

0:03:06 > 0:03:12Yesterday felt a little rough. Why? Just felt just drained.

0:03:12 > 0:03:16Is it because... I heard you were going on hikes on the mountain.

0:03:16 > 0:03:17Woo!

0:03:17 > 0:03:18I didn't go on a hike but, this morning,

0:03:18 > 0:03:22we was meant to do our normal walk... Yeah. ..what takes an hour.

0:03:22 > 0:03:26We got lost and it took two hours. How did you get lost?

0:03:26 > 0:03:29There's one road! Yeah, I know. We got lost somehow.

0:03:29 > 0:03:31But, yeah, it's still nice to get out in the morning cos it

0:03:31 > 0:03:33sets me up for the day. Mm-hm.

0:03:33 > 0:03:37You are aware, last week, of eating healthy. Yeah.

0:03:37 > 0:03:39Your blood sugar went down, your cholesterol went down.

0:03:39 > 0:03:43Everything went down, basically, almost like a normal person. Yeah.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46And so, this week, you were fasting. Do you expect...

0:03:46 > 0:03:47What do you expect now?

0:03:47 > 0:03:49Keep on the same kind of programme, really,

0:03:49 > 0:03:52because I still want it to stay down. It's not like, hallelujah,

0:03:52 > 0:03:55let's get back up there again now. Exactly. So, no, no.

0:03:55 > 0:03:59I'm ready to keep it on that level because I was...

0:03:59 > 0:04:02It was nice to see everyone so happy,

0:04:02 > 0:04:05as well as me being happy about everything coming down. Yeah.

0:04:05 > 0:04:07So that was a good feeling, a really good feeling.

0:04:07 > 0:04:12I'm just so fed up with my eyes ripping every night since

0:04:12 > 0:04:15I've been here and I don't know why they're so bad.

0:04:17 > 0:04:21I'm wondering if it's cos there's not much humidity here.

0:04:21 > 0:04:24Anyways, I'm just feeling really fed up.

0:04:25 > 0:04:30But I'm excited cos I'm going to the osteopath in about half an

0:04:30 > 0:04:33hour and I hear he's brilliant.

0:04:35 > 0:04:39I'm really hoping he can pinpoint why my body isn't healing

0:04:39 > 0:04:40itself the way it should.

0:04:43 > 0:04:46The gang are going to be subjected to more invasive physical

0:04:46 > 0:04:52therapies for about a week. First up is Oren, the retreat's osteopath.

0:04:52 > 0:04:56I deal with anatomy and physiology and mechanics.

0:04:56 > 0:04:59Already, Nick looks less than impressed.

0:04:59 > 0:05:00So what I'm going to do,

0:05:00 > 0:05:04I'm going to check your body because all of you know that you have

0:05:04 > 0:05:08pain in all kinds of areas of the body - lower back, neck, shoulder.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11I'm very interested about the source of your pain.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14And through the knowledge of anatomy and physiology, I'm going to do like

0:05:14 > 0:05:19an exploration to try to understand where your pain is originating.

0:05:19 > 0:05:21There has been a lot wrong with me for a long time in terms of

0:05:21 > 0:05:24physical wellbeing, and so I use physios quite a lot.

0:05:24 > 0:05:26And I've always found that sports physios are the best cos

0:05:26 > 0:05:30they just get everything working again. But they don't...

0:05:30 > 0:05:32They never say they're going to cure me of the problem

0:05:32 > 0:05:35because it's an ongoing problem that I have from injuries.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38Whereas here, more interestingly, he's saying

0:05:38 > 0:05:41he can get on top of this by actually finding the root cause.

0:05:41 > 0:05:45This is sensitive here? Yep. Yes. And here? Not so much. OK.

0:05:45 > 0:05:49If I can walk away from this experience without actually

0:05:49 > 0:05:51having to see a physio every week because of the damage that

0:05:51 > 0:05:53I've got done to me, then that will be absolutely fabulous.

0:05:53 > 0:05:56When he was doing manipulations, or said he was doing manipulations,

0:05:56 > 0:06:00there appeared to be no movement or manipulation going on at all.

0:06:00 > 0:06:04By the same token, it did feel better after than before.

0:06:04 > 0:06:09Stretch the lower leg. It's painful? No, no. It's not painful?

0:06:09 > 0:06:12I'm not sure. For example, if I was to pressure you on your shoulder blade

0:06:12 > 0:06:14now and say, "Does that feel better?" Then you'd say yes.

0:06:14 > 0:06:16I can't honestly say whether he's pressing

0:06:16 > 0:06:19me as hard the second time in those places as the first time.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22So the only way of knowing whether that's actually worked or not

0:06:22 > 0:06:24is over the next few days, the next couple of days,

0:06:24 > 0:06:29whether I feel better. Do you feel that? Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yes? Yeah.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32Interesting. He's unpredictable.

0:06:32 > 0:06:33Exactly the middle here.

0:06:33 > 0:06:36He doesn't respond in the way that you would expect.

0:06:36 > 0:06:39I still feel the tension and the pain in the lower back.

0:06:39 > 0:06:42It's been a long-term problem and I'd be very surprised if that

0:06:42 > 0:06:44got solved in one session.

0:06:44 > 0:06:47With Nick and Laura still unsure of Oren's effectiveness,

0:06:47 > 0:06:51April sees him with her chronic eye condition.

0:06:51 > 0:06:52The top of my eye is

0:06:52 > 0:06:57no longer properly adherent to the rest of the eye.

0:06:57 > 0:07:02I have severe dry eye and I have recurrent corneal erosion.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05What happens to me is, when I go to bed at night,

0:07:05 > 0:07:09within about 30 minutes, my eyeballs are bloodshot - sometimes

0:07:09 > 0:07:11both eyes, sometimes one eye.

0:07:11 > 0:07:16Is it when I open my eyes, pieces of the epithelial layer are pulled off?

0:07:16 > 0:07:23And I'm in absolute agony. I want to release all the orbit area.

0:07:25 > 0:07:30It was absolutely incredible because the response in my body was

0:07:30 > 0:07:33so profound and I could feel, like,

0:07:33 > 0:07:37energy moving through areas that I think have been blocked previously.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40I feel much more in alignment,

0:07:40 > 0:07:46I feel much more balanced on my left and right sides. Absolutely.

0:07:46 > 0:07:48And it's going to be really interesting to do yoga

0:07:48 > 0:07:50because my right hip is always really,

0:07:50 > 0:07:54really jammed but he's just loosened that all up.

0:07:54 > 0:07:56I'm excited. Well, time will tell, right?

0:07:56 > 0:07:58With everyone hitting their own rhythms,

0:07:58 > 0:08:00the gang are on different paths.

0:08:03 > 0:08:08I'm glad that I extended my detox from the 7 days to 13 with

0:08:08 > 0:08:09the juices.

0:08:09 > 0:08:13I feel my body needed to clear a lot more things out,

0:08:13 > 0:08:15which apparently this helps.

0:08:15 > 0:08:19And it's not easy watching everybody eat their food.

0:08:19 > 0:08:22I mean, you're craving to have something but I think you've

0:08:22 > 0:08:26got your end date in mind and you're doing it for you,

0:08:26 > 0:08:29and everybody's doing their own little journey on this thing.

0:08:29 > 0:08:30And so, you just...

0:08:30 > 0:08:33As long as you know where you're going, it's tough but it's OK.

0:08:33 > 0:08:37Melody does this vegetarian sushi that is pretty spectacular

0:08:37 > 0:08:40so I didn't want to kind of have a big blowout.

0:08:40 > 0:08:44I just would have really liked a plate of her vegetarian sushi.

0:08:44 > 0:08:47Would have just hit the mark. Want to chew something!

0:08:48 > 0:08:50I want some flavour and I want some texture!

0:08:54 > 0:08:57As Milton and Kathy's walks get ever longer, the morning finds

0:08:57 > 0:09:00them trekking as far as Thong Sala - the island's capital.

0:09:00 > 0:09:04They're really overripe. Overripe? Yeah.

0:09:05 > 0:09:09Not a great place for two people on a fast. Nice.

0:09:09 > 0:09:11But they're not the only ones who have slipped the monk-like

0:09:11 > 0:09:13confines of the retreat.

0:09:13 > 0:09:18Laura has taken Claire into town and is keen to show her the more

0:09:18 > 0:09:21spiritual side of Ko Pha Ngan.

0:09:21 > 0:09:25I've been studying the Dharma as part of a group over the last

0:09:25 > 0:09:28few years, and it's a really important part my life.

0:09:29 > 0:09:33I started to meditate and then I asked to be a Mitra, which just

0:09:33 > 0:09:38means friend but it means you've committed to the path of Buddhism.

0:09:39 > 0:09:42And then, a few years after that, I requested ordination.

0:09:47 > 0:09:50The Dharmic monks here take the retreat's meditation

0:09:50 > 0:09:52practices to some extreme levels.

0:09:54 > 0:09:58This monk is practising being in a state of nothingness and can

0:09:58 > 0:10:01sit like this for hours on end.

0:10:05 > 0:10:09I want to talk to Maggie to check what happened yesterday with you.

0:10:09 > 0:10:13Ever vigilant, Dominique checks in with the gang over lunch to

0:10:13 > 0:10:16discuss another new level of the programme.

0:10:16 > 0:10:20So I had that very deep tummy massage. Chi nei tsang.

0:10:20 > 0:10:25Which was painful in places and incredibly...incredibly deep.

0:10:25 > 0:10:26I thought, at one stage, literally,

0:10:26 > 0:10:30she was massaging my kidney and liver. Mm-hm.

0:10:30 > 0:10:35She said that there was a bit of a build-up of clay and that there

0:10:35 > 0:10:37was definitely a blockage - not the clay but there was a blockage.

0:10:37 > 0:10:40She didn't necessarily manage to get rid of the blockage but at

0:10:40 > 0:10:45least we sort of moved things around a bit so I feel a lot better.

0:10:45 > 0:10:46That's great. Yeah.

0:10:46 > 0:10:51Chi nei tsang is a deep tissue abdomen massage designed to

0:10:51 > 0:10:55specifically move toxic blockages and release negative emotions

0:10:55 > 0:10:57from individual organs.

0:10:57 > 0:11:01Only some of the gang opt to try it out as it can be extremely

0:11:01 > 0:11:02uncomfortable.

0:11:04 > 0:11:07# But I still have not found

0:11:09 > 0:11:12# My way over

0:11:12 > 0:11:16# I've been stuck, mixed up for years

0:11:16 > 0:11:20# And it only my pride that keeps me alive

0:11:20 > 0:11:21# Yes, it is. #

0:11:21 > 0:11:23Sort of a dud note then. That's good. Mate, that's good.

0:11:23 > 0:11:25No, that's good, isn't it? We'll get there.

0:11:25 > 0:11:27It's getting there, it's getting there.

0:11:27 > 0:11:29Yeah, we'll get that on point. Definitely.

0:11:29 > 0:11:31How are you finding it? Look at the shape of you.

0:11:31 > 0:11:35Yeah, well, as I keep saying, I came on this on a mission,

0:11:35 > 0:11:37you know what I mean? And I was going to, you know,

0:11:37 > 0:11:40I was going to stick to what I was told and do what I was,

0:11:40 > 0:11:43you know, do whatever, like, the experts and that was telling

0:11:43 > 0:11:44me to do kind of thing, you know?

0:11:44 > 0:11:46And been enjoying the yoga.

0:11:46 > 0:11:48Just been kind of enjoying it all, really.

0:11:48 > 0:11:49What do you make of the reiki?

0:11:49 > 0:11:52Reiki didn't work for me. No? Didn't work for me, didn't do anything.

0:11:52 > 0:11:54I felt a bit odd through that experience,

0:11:54 > 0:11:57but I didn't really come away with a hallelujah moment.

0:11:57 > 0:12:00Nor me. I saw it in some other guys. I had a good kip a couple of times.

0:12:00 > 0:12:02I had a good kip.

0:12:02 > 0:12:08I think I could hear myself snoring and it woke me up. Hm.

0:12:08 > 0:12:11At 1.30, I've got to go to the hub.

0:12:11 > 0:12:12I've got a...

0:12:12 > 0:12:15What do I have? I've got a...

0:12:15 > 0:12:19chi nei tsang with Satyanna

0:12:19 > 0:12:23and that's a tummy massage.

0:12:23 > 0:12:27I mean, you've met Satyanna. She's one of our...

0:12:27 > 0:12:30yoga instructors and...

0:12:30 > 0:12:35she seems to like pain kind of or inflicting pain,

0:12:35 > 0:12:38which is making me a little bit worried.

0:12:38 > 0:12:40She seems to smile

0:12:40 > 0:12:42and I believe this can be quite sore.

0:12:44 > 0:12:47So, I'm worried about the pain infliction, but also,

0:12:47 > 0:12:51you know, hopefully, I don't react and slap her on camera by mistake.

0:12:51 > 0:12:57So, today we will do a session called chi nei tsang,

0:12:57 > 0:13:00a very deep abdominal massage that is working

0:13:00 > 0:13:03towards the support of your cleanse.

0:13:03 > 0:13:07You say deep, getting an emotional and deep tissue rub.

0:13:07 > 0:13:12I mean, is this going to be quite emotional again or...? They can be.

0:13:12 > 0:13:14You can be prepared for that.

0:13:14 > 0:13:17For example, the liver is associated with anger,

0:13:17 > 0:13:20so a lot of time when I'm touching on someone's liver on the

0:13:20 > 0:13:24right side of the body, it's like this will trigger something.

0:13:24 > 0:13:29But also, like, lungs, heart, associated with grief, for example.

0:13:29 > 0:13:33Or kidneys associated with jealousy, so depending on what your

0:13:33 > 0:13:37physiological make-up is and what's going on in your life,

0:13:37 > 0:13:38then these things can be activated

0:13:38 > 0:13:40or it could be totally pleasurable

0:13:40 > 0:13:44or you could totally feel like you've got so much energy at the end

0:13:44 > 0:13:47or you could totally feel drained. OK, ready to go.

0:13:50 > 0:13:55While Kathy tries to relax and get the most out of the session,

0:13:55 > 0:14:00the others are encouraged to let themselves go with some deeper yoga.

0:14:00 > 0:14:04Today's class, we are working with opening up your hips

0:14:04 > 0:14:08and we are working with a muscle called the psoas muscle.

0:14:08 > 0:14:12So this muscle attaches T12.

0:14:12 > 0:14:16The psoas is a particular muscle used in the fight or flight

0:14:16 > 0:14:20instinct and a tight one increases feelings of stress and anxiety.

0:14:24 > 0:14:28Inhaling, the right leg goes behind the body.

0:14:28 > 0:14:31Looking up, keeping an arch in your back.

0:14:32 > 0:14:36Ooh! THEY LAUGH

0:14:36 > 0:14:38Man down.

0:14:40 > 0:14:43'That was kind of cool cos actually for the first time'

0:14:43 > 0:14:47today I've heard it said for eight days now,

0:14:47 > 0:14:50"lose the outline of your body" when you're, like, relaxing

0:14:50 > 0:14:52and I did.

0:14:52 > 0:14:54Actually couldn't feel where my skin was.

0:14:54 > 0:14:56It was like I was...

0:14:56 > 0:14:58twice the size or I was like expanding,

0:14:58 > 0:15:00but not feeling where my skin was.

0:15:00 > 0:15:01That was really weird, actually.

0:15:03 > 0:15:05That was kind of odd. Yeah. I mean, you are aware where you are, aren't

0:15:05 > 0:15:08you, at all times? You know what your skin is, you know what

0:15:08 > 0:15:09your arms are, and legs, I mean,

0:15:09 > 0:15:12I still knew where they were, it's just that... I hope so.

0:15:12 > 0:15:15The outline kind of... I understood what they meant for the first

0:15:15 > 0:15:17time today. I like...

0:15:17 > 0:15:19Look, you know, I'm the least hippy person in the world,

0:15:19 > 0:15:21but I actually... LAUGHTER

0:15:21 > 0:15:23Seriously, I feel kind of stupid even saying it.

0:15:23 > 0:15:25LAUGHTER I really did.

0:15:25 > 0:15:29I felt like a complete muppet saying it, but actually...actually I did.

0:15:29 > 0:15:32I don't care what you think of me.

0:15:32 > 0:15:34LAUGHTER

0:15:34 > 0:15:37So the last couple of days I've actually been feeling that I'm not

0:15:37 > 0:15:40doing that well with yoga and I don't know if it's to do with the

0:15:40 > 0:15:43hunger and maybe in and out of depression and being happy.

0:15:43 > 0:15:45If it's all just part of the process.

0:15:48 > 0:15:51I'm battling at it a little bit now.

0:15:51 > 0:15:54We close the left, we exhale through the right,

0:15:54 > 0:15:59making sure your exhalation is longer inhalation.

0:15:59 > 0:16:02His constant coming back to the breath and then lengthening

0:16:02 > 0:16:05the breath when you're feeling stressed has been brilliant.

0:16:05 > 0:16:09Oh, that meditation at the end is just beautiful.

0:16:11 > 0:16:15I'm finding the meditation part at the end when you are

0:16:15 > 0:16:17visualising people, I find that really hard.

0:16:17 > 0:16:19I get really upset.

0:16:19 > 0:16:22I've never really been asked to wish people health and happiness

0:16:22 > 0:16:26who you don't like, you know, and who have caused you pain.

0:16:26 > 0:16:29I just never realised that...

0:16:29 > 0:16:31yoga was that powerful.

0:16:39 > 0:16:42Today was a better day for me.

0:16:42 > 0:16:45I wasn't too emotional

0:16:45 > 0:16:47and so that seems to be good.

0:16:48 > 0:16:53So when I had that ching chang shoo...

0:16:53 > 0:16:58chang...chung... Something.

0:16:58 > 0:17:02Today, the massage where they massage your tummy,

0:17:02 > 0:17:04but they call it a massage,

0:17:04 > 0:17:06but it's not a massage.

0:17:06 > 0:17:08It's properly painful.

0:17:08 > 0:17:10It's like they want to massage

0:17:10 > 0:17:12or stroke or move around your

0:17:12 > 0:17:14organs, which is boggling.

0:17:15 > 0:17:19But I felt really good afterwards.

0:17:19 > 0:17:24Everybody has gone off to a lovely place called The Dome,

0:17:24 > 0:17:30which has a lovely steam room and bonfire.

0:17:32 > 0:17:35Neither of which I can do because of my eye condition.

0:17:37 > 0:17:38This is normally my bedtime.

0:17:40 > 0:17:43The Dome. D-d-d-dome.

0:17:43 > 0:17:47Famous for its singing, dancing and all-night parties,

0:17:47 > 0:17:51The Dome offers the gang the opportunity to blow off some steam.

0:17:55 > 0:17:58Which appeals to some more than others.

0:17:58 > 0:18:03SINGING AND DRUMMING

0:18:08 > 0:18:11I'm about to go into this igloo-shaped thing.

0:18:11 > 0:18:14I'm a bit scared because they said you hum in there,

0:18:14 > 0:18:16but you're not allowed to talk.

0:18:16 > 0:18:19And I can't see anything, so I don't even know if there's space for

0:18:19 > 0:18:21me, but I'm going to go in.

0:18:24 > 0:18:26Amazing. There's like a...

0:18:26 > 0:18:29As soon as you start humming, everyone is getting into the whole

0:18:29 > 0:18:31thing. It's quite a nice vibe in there.

0:18:33 > 0:18:35I'm scared. You go.

0:18:37 > 0:18:39Is that really cold?

0:18:39 > 0:18:41Trust me. Would it be really cold?

0:18:41 > 0:18:44HE GRUNTS

0:18:46 > 0:18:49HE GRUNTS

0:18:49 > 0:18:50There you go.

0:18:55 > 0:18:56Well, that's a mite warm.

0:18:58 > 0:19:01Really funny as well because there's like a...

0:19:01 > 0:19:06There's like an acoustic inside, so everybody starts humming, om-ing.

0:19:08 > 0:19:11And it really... If you get the right tone, it really reverberates.

0:19:11 > 0:19:14Kind of freaky, but very refreshing.

0:19:14 > 0:19:16You pour the bucket of this over your head, then?

0:19:16 > 0:19:21SINGING AND DRUMMING

0:19:25 > 0:19:28If I'm completely honest, I'd sooner go to hell,

0:19:28 > 0:19:29I think, than go here.

0:19:29 > 0:19:32Not my...natural environment at all.

0:19:36 > 0:19:40So that was very random.

0:19:40 > 0:19:42Um...

0:19:42 > 0:19:45I'm not sure how I feel about that little room.

0:19:45 > 0:19:47Actually, I feel quite uncomfortable.

0:19:47 > 0:19:51Not putting the dress on, not going for a sauna.

0:19:51 > 0:19:54SHE LAUGHS

0:19:54 > 0:19:56Just...

0:19:57 > 0:20:00HE SIGHS

0:20:00 > 0:20:01Yeah, might go to sleep.

0:20:05 > 0:20:07Yeah, I'm not sure.

0:20:13 > 0:20:15Just about to do a colema

0:20:15 > 0:20:17and meet up with the rest of the

0:20:17 > 0:20:19guys and see what today brings.

0:20:19 > 0:20:22I think we are moving today, moving up to a hotel.

0:20:22 > 0:20:24While the gang are relaxing

0:20:24 > 0:20:26and Milton is still on his detox regime,

0:20:26 > 0:20:29Nick has paddled across the bay again

0:20:29 > 0:20:31to start a yoga therapy consultation with Luke.

0:20:31 > 0:20:33How are you doing? How are you doing?

0:20:33 > 0:20:35Good.

0:20:35 > 0:20:38Nice office. Yeah. It's all right, isn't it?

0:20:38 > 0:20:40The honest truth is, since I've been here I kind of feel like I've

0:20:40 > 0:20:43re-found my mojo, which I lost a bit.

0:20:43 > 0:20:47I can't describe it any better than that. I feel sort of reenergized.

0:20:47 > 0:20:49I'm enjoying fitness work. I'm enjoy the eating,

0:20:49 > 0:20:51which I never thought I would. I'm enjoying the yoga.

0:20:51 > 0:20:54There's another pain that I'm working on at the moment.

0:20:54 > 0:20:55There's a muscle in...

0:20:55 > 0:21:00Right on the joint here, which is unbelievably painful.

0:21:00 > 0:21:03I would stay away from the gym for now.

0:21:03 > 0:21:06Yeah, but I'm trying to get that upper back strength again

0:21:06 > 0:21:08cos I've been so sort of lax like this.

0:21:08 > 0:21:12Yeah, but just from the yoga, just for opening up your shoulders

0:21:12 > 0:21:14in the different postures and downward dog,

0:21:14 > 0:21:16I think it's just going to do that naturally.

0:21:16 > 0:21:18Your posture has definitely changed.

0:21:18 > 0:21:21It is changing, yes, but also I've lost sort of the definition in

0:21:21 > 0:21:23my shoulders and things.

0:21:23 > 0:21:25I don't think so.

0:21:25 > 0:21:28I think you've probably done enough weights for now.

0:21:28 > 0:21:29I would consider, anyway,

0:21:29 > 0:21:31just trying to open up and stretch rather than...

0:21:31 > 0:21:34OK, I'll stick to the cross-trainer and stuff. OK, that will be good.

0:21:34 > 0:21:39Over the next few days, the gang are now rotating between Luke and

0:21:39 > 0:21:41deeper sessions with Oren.

0:21:41 > 0:21:47About five and a half years ago, I had sudden hearing loss.

0:21:47 > 0:21:49Two days later, we went away on holiday,

0:21:49 > 0:21:52it got progressively worse and even by doing that, I could not clear it.

0:21:52 > 0:21:56And then from then, I had no hearing on that side.

0:21:56 > 0:21:58'It's quite confusing when he puts his hand in your mouth and

0:21:58 > 0:22:02'then all of a sudden, something else is less painful and'

0:22:02 > 0:22:07certainly up around this area and if he can do anything, even if

0:22:07 > 0:22:12he can restore even just a small amount, you know, but we'll see.

0:22:12 > 0:22:17The rest of the gang are equally confused by Oren's unusual methods.

0:22:17 > 0:22:20He's the chap that I don't think one could really describe.

0:22:20 > 0:22:22I mean, I asked if he could levitate and he said yes.

0:22:22 > 0:22:24And he also said he could walk on water, so

0:22:24 > 0:22:27'he was very much enthralled about a vertebrae that he fixed'

0:22:27 > 0:22:29by inserting a finger in my ear.

0:22:29 > 0:22:32So... I mean, I'm not sure. I'm feeling better.

0:22:32 > 0:22:35It seemed to have worked, whatever he touched and moved,

0:22:35 > 0:22:39the pain moved and then it dissipated. He's great.

0:22:39 > 0:22:42Breathe in. Yes.

0:22:42 > 0:22:43Very good, yeah, very strange.

0:22:43 > 0:22:46Like I say, especially like when he would go to

0:22:46 > 0:22:49a point and he would dig his finger in and it would really hurt.

0:22:49 > 0:22:52Especially when he'd done that one on my knee,

0:22:52 > 0:22:54'I almost jumped off the table.

0:22:54 > 0:22:56'But then he goes back to it after he's done his...'

0:22:56 > 0:22:58thing and it's just gone.

0:22:58 > 0:23:02Well, first of all, I was very apprehensive because I've heard what

0:23:02 > 0:23:07other people have been through, it sometimes really, really hurts.

0:23:07 > 0:23:10'That's where I felt a bit tense sometimes when Oren was trying'

0:23:10 > 0:23:15things, but when I learned to relax with him and trust him,

0:23:15 > 0:23:18I found it really, really good.

0:23:19 > 0:23:20'That was an experience, man.'

0:23:20 > 0:23:23I thought maybe he was pressing on pressure points

0:23:23 > 0:23:25'or something like that, but actual'

0:23:25 > 0:23:29pain and tension, at this time, is gone.

0:23:29 > 0:23:32It's amazing. What can I say? HE LAUGHS

0:23:32 > 0:23:34You know, got to give everything a try once, haven't you?

0:23:34 > 0:23:37Who knows? HE LAUGHS

0:23:45 > 0:23:49I'm still not sure I'm feeling anything at all, really.

0:23:49 > 0:23:50It's very difficult to tell.

0:23:54 > 0:23:58Over the next few days, Luke's yoga therapy starts in earnest

0:23:58 > 0:24:03with tailored one-on-one sessions for their specific problems.

0:24:03 > 0:24:05My belief is if you go back into that night shift,

0:24:05 > 0:24:07I think it's going to be hard for you.

0:24:07 > 0:24:11Because the programme while I've been here has been quite hectic,

0:24:11 > 0:24:15but I've gone straight into it and I'm really enjoying it.

0:24:15 > 0:24:18What I came here to do was get, I don't think it's a cliche,

0:24:18 > 0:24:22but, you know, the mind, body and soul kind of balance.

0:24:22 > 0:24:27And, yeah, I'm feeling it every day, mate. Every day and look at this.

0:24:27 > 0:24:29HE CHUCKLES

0:24:29 > 0:24:32What a place to do it in, you know? So, yeah.

0:24:38 > 0:24:42After their previous session, Maggie meets with Oren for

0:24:42 > 0:24:45a catch-up and has some incredible news.

0:24:45 > 0:24:49Hi, Maggie. Hi. How did you feel after the last treatment? What happened?

0:24:49 > 0:24:51How did you feel?

0:24:51 > 0:24:55The following day, quite sore in places because I know you had

0:24:55 > 0:24:59to do quite a lot of, you know, movement, etc.

0:24:59 > 0:25:01I didn't notice it at first,

0:25:01 > 0:25:04but I think over the last week or so...

0:25:05 > 0:25:10..the perception is, the hearing on this side is not monumentally better,

0:25:10 > 0:25:16but I think, you know, I seem to be able to hear a little better.

0:25:16 > 0:25:18But it's one of those things, you know.

0:25:18 > 0:25:23It sounds a lot clearer, both with my hearing aid in

0:25:23 > 0:25:24and also with it out.

0:25:26 > 0:25:30I will check it also. OK. Good. So, let's start. OK.

0:25:33 > 0:25:35Meanwhile on the other side of the camp,

0:25:35 > 0:25:39Kathy is on her way to Shakti to try out some reiki.

0:25:41 > 0:25:45Hello. Hello. So how are you doing?

0:25:45 > 0:25:51Yeah, fine. On and off emotional in the evenings and stuff. Hm.

0:25:53 > 0:25:57But I just worry that I'm going to leave here still with all the

0:25:57 > 0:25:59negative things inside me, you know,

0:25:59 > 0:26:03and then I don't know what to do when I'm back.

0:26:03 > 0:26:05'To start off with,'

0:26:05 > 0:26:08there was a lot of things that didn't make sense for her,

0:26:08 > 0:26:10but now we are moving.

0:26:10 > 0:26:13There is a synchronicity that's starting to develop.

0:26:13 > 0:26:16So, as you're inhaling light into this area,

0:26:16 > 0:26:19you're also inhaling love into this area.

0:26:19 > 0:26:21'She's bringing all her energy back to her,'

0:26:21 > 0:26:24so we are clearing out the system of all the stuff that she didn't

0:26:24 > 0:26:30need, that wasn't supporting her, of really old, putrid energy,

0:26:30 > 0:26:32feelings, emotions.

0:26:34 > 0:26:36Reiki originated in Japan

0:26:36 > 0:26:39and includes a no-touch laying on of hands,

0:26:39 > 0:26:44which is said to improve the flow of the body's life energy.

0:26:45 > 0:26:49This no-touch, natural healing may help to alleviate

0:26:49 > 0:26:53anxiety, depression, stress and fatigue.

0:26:53 > 0:26:56Good one. Hey? Yeah, yeah. That was a weird one.

0:26:56 > 0:26:59It was an easy one, though, wasn't it?

0:26:59 > 0:27:04No. THEY LAUGH

0:27:04 > 0:27:06How do you feel?

0:27:06 > 0:27:08Yeah, weird. Strange, I think.

0:27:11 > 0:27:13Strange.

0:27:13 > 0:27:16'Sometimes this kind of stuff takes a little while to sink in.

0:27:16 > 0:27:19'This is the processing time that people need,'

0:27:19 > 0:27:21which is the space between the sessions to just get on with

0:27:21 > 0:27:25your life a little bit, then you can come back to it.

0:27:25 > 0:27:27I see a lot of...

0:27:28 > 0:27:29..people being emotional here,

0:27:29 > 0:27:32more so the girls and I'm worried that I'm not being

0:27:32 > 0:27:37as emotional or crying, you know,

0:27:37 > 0:27:39all the time or lots of the time.

0:27:39 > 0:27:43So, I suppose my journey is maybe a bit different to theirs

0:27:43 > 0:27:44and I don't need to cry.

0:27:48 > 0:27:52Kathy, feeling frustrated by her own journey, takes solace in

0:27:52 > 0:27:57Milton's and a nice sunset will always lift your spirits.

0:28:05 > 0:28:08Next time on The Retreat...

0:28:08 > 0:28:13We've given up sugar, caffeine, alcohol, meat, dairy, wheat...

0:28:13 > 0:28:15Proud owner of my first juice.

0:28:15 > 0:28:18I just had this epiphany that I'd let you down.

0:28:18 > 0:28:22I cried last night. Woke up crying.

0:28:22 > 0:28:26I just had a very, very strange experience.

0:28:26 > 0:28:29I'm not really an emotional person.

0:28:33 > 0:28:36Before attempting any of the detox techniques or practices

0:28:36 > 0:28:38demonstrated in The Retreat,

0:28:38 > 0:28:41you are advised to seek out your doctor's advice.

0:29:02 > 0:29:03He didn't understand other people's feelings.

0:29:03 > 0:29:04He just didn't.

0:29:04 > 0:29:07But then, they weren't important to him,

0:29:07 > 0:29:08so why should he understand them?
