0:00:02 > 0:00:04Extraordinary stories from a shared past.

0:00:04 > 0:00:07There was 12 people on board the aircraft that day,

0:00:07 > 0:00:08six of us made it, six of us didn't.

0:00:08 > 0:00:11- Bonds forged in tragedy... - I'm sorry.

0:00:11 > 0:00:12..and triumph.

0:00:12 > 0:00:14CHEERING

0:00:14 > 0:00:17The little girl that you helped 15 years ago.

0:00:17 > 0:00:19Brought together by fate...

0:00:19 > 0:00:21It just overwhelmed me.

0:00:21 > 0:00:23..but separated by time.

0:00:23 > 0:00:25God, where did all those years go?

0:00:25 > 0:00:28Decades on, we reunite them.

0:00:30 > 0:00:32When a small country like Northern Ireland

0:00:32 > 0:00:34gets through against the odds

0:00:34 > 0:00:37to the finals of football's international championships,

0:00:37 > 0:00:40there's always cause for celebration.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43That's what happened in our first reunion, more than 30 years ago,

0:00:43 > 0:00:46when yer man hit the ball and Northern Ireland had it all.

0:00:50 > 0:00:56Espana 82 and the first time Northern Ireland qualified for the World Cup finals since 1958.

0:00:56 > 0:00:58It's a goal!

0:00:58 > 0:01:02Not even the great George Best had taken part on football's greatest stage.

0:01:04 > 0:01:08But Billy Bingham's men would defy all expectations.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13Key to the success of the '82 campaign

0:01:13 > 0:01:16was the then 37-year-old goalkeeper

0:01:16 > 0:01:17Pat Jennings.

0:01:19 > 0:01:22I've been coming to Windsor Park,

0:01:22 > 0:01:25I would say, for it must be 60 years, over 60 years.

0:01:25 > 0:01:28My father used to bring us down to the international matches here,

0:01:28 > 0:01:29my brother and I.

0:01:31 > 0:01:36I'd been trying to qualify from joining the international team

0:01:36 > 0:01:38with George Best away back in 1964.

0:01:38 > 0:01:42And I thought by that stage that it had passed us by,

0:01:42 > 0:01:43I was never going to make it.

0:01:43 > 0:01:45Oh, a great save by Jennings.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48# Golden brown, texture like sun... #

0:01:48 > 0:01:53Part of the squad playing alongside Jennings was 24-year-old right back

0:01:53 > 0:01:55Jimmy Nicholl.

0:01:55 > 0:01:58Northern Ireland won games they should've lost and they

0:01:58 > 0:01:59lost games that they should have won,

0:01:59 > 0:02:01they were just up and all over the place.

0:02:01 > 0:02:04And then Billy Bingham became manager in 1980.

0:02:04 > 0:02:05And right away, he...

0:02:07 > 0:02:09..he put a discipline in the place.

0:02:09 > 0:02:13And you took it on to the park, and you took it into your performances and that was the start of it.

0:02:14 > 0:02:19And so the qualifying campaign began for Espana '82.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22Grouped with Portugal, Sweden, Scotland and Israel,

0:02:22 > 0:02:24it wasn't an easy road.

0:02:26 > 0:02:28To secure a place in the World Cup finals,

0:02:28 > 0:02:31they needed at least a draw against Israel

0:02:31 > 0:02:34in their final match at home in Windsor Park.

0:02:36 > 0:02:40Playing that night, the 24-year-old Burnley forward Billy Hamilton.

0:02:40 > 0:02:44It was the old Windsor Park, the old Spion Kop,

0:02:44 > 0:02:46and there was, I would say, 40 to 50,000.

0:02:46 > 0:02:51They were crammed in like sardines and the atmosphere was fantastic.

0:02:51 > 0:02:53And the free kick to Northern Ireland.

0:02:53 > 0:02:57We got a free kick and Jimmy Nicholl was supposed to put one hand up

0:02:57 > 0:02:59if he was going to hit it near post,

0:02:59 > 0:03:03two hands up if he was going to hit it far post, and it was a cold night

0:03:03 > 0:03:05and Jimmy started to rub his hands,

0:03:05 > 0:03:08and me and Gerry Armstrong looked at each other.

0:03:08 > 0:03:12He eventually got his signals right and I remember jumping up

0:03:12 > 0:03:15- at the far post.- Up goes Billy Hamilton. Armstrong, yes!

0:03:17 > 0:03:20That was the turning point and big Gerry scored.

0:03:21 > 0:03:23Want to hear the most important whistle of the evening...

0:03:23 > 0:03:25CHEERING

0:03:25 > 0:03:27And I don't need to say anything.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30Windsor Park erupted.

0:03:30 > 0:03:35Israel were out and Norn Iron were on their way to the World Cup finals in Spain.

0:03:36 > 0:03:38We looked around, the crowd was going berserk.

0:03:39 > 0:03:41We done a lap of honour around the pitch

0:03:41 > 0:03:43and you just didn't want that to end.

0:03:44 > 0:03:49It was a fantastic thrill that we had actually qualified for our first World Cup.

0:03:53 > 0:03:58More than three decades later and some of the '82 team are returning to the

0:03:58 > 0:04:03hallowed ground where their World Cup dreams became reality, Windsor Park.

0:04:06 > 0:04:09In those days, it was like a family, it is just that bond,

0:04:09 > 0:04:11with players and with teams.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14And that is the sort of bond that would get you playing together.

0:04:14 > 0:04:18Joining goalkeeper Pat Jennings are team-mates Billy Hamilton,

0:04:18 > 0:04:20Felix Healy, Jimmy Nicholl and Terry Cochrane.

0:04:20 > 0:04:24How are you? It hasn't changed, the wind's always the same.

0:04:24 > 0:04:26Nice to see you. How are you?

0:04:28 > 0:04:30All right. Not a hair out of place!

0:04:33 > 0:04:37Their reunion, a chance to recall just how big an impression

0:04:37 > 0:04:40their success made on people here at the time.

0:04:42 > 0:04:44I would never get into those shorts again!

0:04:46 > 0:04:48There is one of you there, big Billy, look.

0:04:48 > 0:04:50- Pick that one out. - That's the Austrian one.

0:04:52 > 0:04:54There's Shirley Temple!

0:04:54 > 0:04:56In full flow, the barnet.

0:04:59 > 0:05:00We didn't realise the impact,

0:05:00 > 0:05:04but you'd go into a restaurant and people get up and start clapping.

0:05:05 > 0:05:07I didn't realise until we came back.

0:05:07 > 0:05:10We had a reception at City Hall and everybody is out in the street.

0:05:10 > 0:05:14That's when I realised what it meant to people back home, you know?

0:05:14 > 0:05:17It shows you we're getting older.

0:05:17 > 0:05:18You were starting to turn brown!

0:05:18 > 0:05:23Older maybe, but these World Cup heroes have still got it, 34 years on.

0:05:26 > 0:05:31The '82 team that, against the odds, proved their doubters wrong.

0:05:33 > 0:05:37Now, you can get odds of 20-1 against England, 40-1 for Scotland,

0:05:37 > 0:05:40and Northern Ireland are 100-1 outsiders.

0:05:40 > 0:05:44The next one coming out of here will either be Northern Ireland or France,

0:05:44 > 0:05:46let's just see where Northern Ireland go.

0:05:46 > 0:05:50Being ranked outsiders was the least of Northern Ireland's worries.

0:05:52 > 0:05:53With seven months ago,

0:05:53 > 0:05:56there were more pressing matters for Bingham's men.

0:05:57 > 0:06:00So Northern Ireland will play Spain in the last game...

0:06:00 > 0:06:03We had to beat the host nation on their own ground,

0:06:03 > 0:06:05and not many people gave us a chance.

0:06:06 > 0:06:10But with Bingham's discipline, the team knuckled down.

0:06:11 > 0:06:13With ten days in Brighton!

0:06:13 > 0:06:15That was our training camp, Brighton.

0:06:15 > 0:06:17I think Scotland were in America,

0:06:17 > 0:06:19England were in America, acclimatising,

0:06:19 > 0:06:21and Northern Ireland were in Brighton.

0:06:21 > 0:06:24We trained half nine to half 12, had an hour for lunch,

0:06:24 > 0:06:28half one to half three, and that was in severe heat.

0:06:28 > 0:06:30You may as well have been in South America.

0:06:31 > 0:06:34Meanwhile, back home, World Cup fever was taking over.

0:06:36 > 0:06:37Someone suggested we'll go,

0:06:37 > 0:06:40obviously, at the time, most people thought it was a joke,

0:06:40 > 0:06:42but as you can see it's turned out to be some joke!

0:06:51 > 0:06:54Match fit and with the country behind them,

0:06:54 > 0:06:56next stop for the squad, Spain.

0:06:58 > 0:07:01Northern Ireland's World Cup players flew out from Heathrow this evening,

0:07:01 > 0:07:05the last of the three home country's squads to arrive in Spain.

0:07:07 > 0:07:11Valencia, the Northern Ireland team's first base camp.

0:07:11 > 0:07:13Settled in, it was time to get down to work.

0:07:13 > 0:07:16First game up was Yugoslavia.

0:07:17 > 0:07:20Petrovic's corner. A good header, well saved.

0:07:20 > 0:07:24We got a great draw against Yugoslavia in the first match,

0:07:24 > 0:07:26and Yugoslavia were a great team in those days.

0:07:26 > 0:07:28And then for the following game, Honduras,

0:07:28 > 0:07:30we thought we could get a win there,

0:07:30 > 0:07:32but they were a big, strong, physical team.

0:07:32 > 0:07:33We didn't expect that.

0:07:33 > 0:07:36And Gerry Armstrong to score the goal.

0:07:36 > 0:07:38So now we've got two points,

0:07:38 > 0:07:40then you think, "Well, at least we are unbeaten."

0:07:42 > 0:07:44Drawing 1-1 against Honduras

0:07:44 > 0:07:46and sitting second from the bottom of the group,

0:07:46 > 0:07:50the boys in green had to get a win against Spain.

0:07:51 > 0:07:54No commentator really gave us a chance.

0:07:54 > 0:07:58We walked out of the tunnel and just the atmosphere was so thick.

0:07:58 > 0:08:01I could hear the Northern Ireland supporters in the corner,

0:08:01 > 0:08:02it was brilliant.

0:08:02 > 0:08:06Once the game started, it was a full-blooded affair.

0:08:09 > 0:08:11The Spanish tried to kick lumps out of us,

0:08:11 > 0:08:14the referee was very sympathetic to their cause.

0:08:14 > 0:08:16It's going to be a goal kick.

0:08:16 > 0:08:20And he seemed to be booking our players and not the Spanish players.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23Two men booked and Northern Ireland's chances

0:08:23 > 0:08:26of getting through to the next round seemed doomed.

0:08:30 > 0:08:33We were delighted to get in at half-time nil-each,

0:08:33 > 0:08:35but we sort of still knew that

0:08:35 > 0:08:37a draw wasn't enough to get us through,

0:08:37 > 0:08:41so we were still waiting on a sort of semi-miracle to happen.

0:08:41 > 0:08:43And then, two minutes into the second half,

0:08:43 > 0:08:47and Northern Ireland's prayers for a miracle were answered.

0:08:49 > 0:08:51What big Billy Hamilton was doing at outside right

0:08:51 > 0:08:53I will never understand!

0:08:54 > 0:08:56I just decided to put the ball in an area

0:08:56 > 0:08:57that was going to cause them problems.

0:08:57 > 0:09:03Armstrong! Northern Ireland have scored through Gerry Armstrong,

0:09:03 > 0:09:06and it's the 100th goal of this World Cup tournament,

0:09:06 > 0:09:09and it could be a priceless one for Northern Ireland.

0:09:09 > 0:09:12We were all euphoric about scoring.

0:09:12 > 0:09:13As were the fans back home.

0:09:16 > 0:09:18With the ball in the Spanish net,

0:09:18 > 0:09:22hopes of qualifying through to the next stage were reignited,

0:09:22 > 0:09:23but the game wasn't over yet.

0:09:23 > 0:09:26The number 13... The number three, rather, Donaghy.

0:09:28 > 0:09:31Oh! And a fight between Donaghy and a Spanish player.

0:09:31 > 0:09:35It's red! And Billy Bingham's team are down to ten men.

0:09:35 > 0:09:37You know they are going to come at you,

0:09:37 > 0:09:38and that's exactly what happened.

0:09:38 > 0:09:43But the boys in green managed to hang on to their goal advantage,

0:09:43 > 0:09:46and keep their World Cup dreams alive.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49And that's why that feeling at the final whistle,

0:09:49 > 0:09:52of achievement, is one that will never leave you.

0:09:52 > 0:09:56Proudest moment in Irish football history, surely.

0:09:56 > 0:09:58They've won the group!

0:09:58 > 0:10:02Northern Ireland were through to the second round,

0:10:02 > 0:10:04but despite some flashes of brilliance...

0:10:04 > 0:10:06And Hamilton!

0:10:06 > 0:10:08..the Spanish game was to be the pinnacle

0:10:08 > 0:10:11of their Espana '82 campaign.

0:10:11 > 0:10:14A draw against Austria, and a 4-1 defeat by France

0:10:14 > 0:10:18would mean the end of the line for this World Cup dream.

0:10:20 > 0:10:24Out of the finals, but still winners in the eyes of the fans,

0:10:24 > 0:10:27the memories of Espana '82 live on,

0:10:27 > 0:10:30and coming up later in the programme,

0:10:30 > 0:10:33who could forget their other winning success that year?

0:10:33 > 0:10:38The team reunite for one last performance of Yer Man.

0:10:38 > 0:10:40You all in good voice now?

0:10:48 > 0:10:52Around 60 babies are born in Northern Ireland every day,

0:10:52 > 0:10:55most of them in hospitals like this one, the Ulster,

0:10:55 > 0:10:57but some new-borns arrive ahead of schedule

0:10:57 > 0:11:01and it's not always possible to get to a hospital for a safe delivery.

0:11:01 > 0:11:05And that's exactly what happened in our next story.

0:11:05 > 0:11:08On the morning of the 3rd of December 2001,

0:11:08 > 0:11:13mum-to-be Julie Rainey had no idea what the day ahead had in store.

0:11:14 > 0:11:18I have come to Julie's house in Donaghadee to hear the full story.

0:11:20 > 0:11:23- Hi, Jo! - Julie! Hello! How are you?

0:11:23 > 0:11:25- Lovely to meet you. - Lovely to meet you.- Hello.

0:11:25 > 0:11:29I was pregnant and I was getting my eldest daughter ready for

0:11:29 > 0:11:32nursery, and I was upstairs.

0:11:34 > 0:11:38I took a few pains and I thought, "Hmm, that's a wee bit...

0:11:39 > 0:11:42"..not right," so I phoned my mum to come.

0:11:42 > 0:11:45As soon as Julie's mum, Ena, arrived at the house,

0:11:45 > 0:11:47she realised the baby was on its way

0:11:47 > 0:11:50and her daughter needed to get to the hospital.

0:11:51 > 0:11:54She was in the front seat having a severe pain,

0:11:54 > 0:12:01so my main concern was, "Oh, my God, she's having this baby."

0:12:01 > 0:12:03And, "Where am I going to stop?"

0:12:03 > 0:12:08The pains just got quicker and quicker and stronger and stronger.

0:12:08 > 0:12:11We got to the Six Road Ends and really from the roundabout that was

0:12:11 > 0:12:14whenever she was for making an appearance.

0:12:14 > 0:12:17It was now obvious they weren't going to make it to Bangor hospital.

0:12:17 > 0:12:19With no other choice,

0:12:19 > 0:12:23Ena pulled the car up onto the roadside next to some stables.

0:12:26 > 0:12:31As you were driving along, and you glanced over, what could you see?

0:12:31 > 0:12:34As we got coming into where the stables are...

0:12:36 > 0:12:38..the baby's head appeared.

0:12:39 > 0:12:41I jumped out and went round,

0:12:41 > 0:12:45and then I proceeded to help her deliver the baby.

0:12:45 > 0:12:51I know I put my hands under her wee head and kind of cupped both hands and

0:12:51 > 0:12:54just lifted her right out into my arms.

0:12:54 > 0:12:57Did you feel anxious and worried for her safety?

0:12:57 > 0:13:01I wanted Mum to go to drive then, I wanted Mum keep driving.

0:13:01 > 0:13:04- I wanted her to just go to hospital and Mum said no.- Too risky.

0:13:04 > 0:13:08Instead, Ena called 999 and an ambulance was dispatched

0:13:08 > 0:13:10from nearby Newtownards.

0:13:10 > 0:13:13Onboard, paramedic John Randle.

0:13:15 > 0:13:20I remember getting dispatched to call with a lady who was in labour.

0:13:20 > 0:13:21When we arrived...

0:13:22 > 0:13:26..I went to the passenger side of the car and opened the door,

0:13:26 > 0:13:29and lo and behold, there was the baby

0:13:29 > 0:13:32in the well of the car, already been born.

0:13:32 > 0:13:34You're obviously an experienced paramedic.

0:13:34 > 0:13:36I mean, what were your immediate concerns?

0:13:36 > 0:13:39It was a cool day so my concern was for the temperature of the baby.

0:13:39 > 0:13:41Babies that that age...

0:13:41 > 0:13:43you don't want it to get hypothermia.

0:13:43 > 0:13:47A colleague brought something nice and warm to wrap the baby in.

0:13:47 > 0:13:51Was there a huge sense of relief or were you still not out of the woods?

0:13:51 > 0:13:53The cord was still attached.

0:13:53 > 0:13:56If you are within ten minutes of the hospital you leave it alone,

0:13:56 > 0:13:59because by cutting the cord there could be complications.

0:13:59 > 0:14:04Rupture, haemorrhage, which, in a car, you really don't want.

0:14:05 > 0:14:08We alerted our control that the baby was stable,

0:14:08 > 0:14:12that the placenta was still intact and we would be about ten minutes.

0:14:29 > 0:14:31Too late for the labour wards,

0:14:31 > 0:14:33a perfectly healthy little Yasmin Rainey

0:14:33 > 0:14:35was delivered to the Ulster Hospital.

0:14:35 > 0:14:38Within minutes of her arrival into the world,

0:14:38 > 0:14:40she was already making news headlines.

0:14:42 > 0:14:46- TV:- Julie Rainey keeps an eye on her two-day-old baby daughter Yasmin.

0:14:46 > 0:14:49It's a normal thing for any mother in a maternity unit,

0:14:49 > 0:14:52but Yasmin's arrival was anything but normal.

0:14:54 > 0:14:56This is the first photograph of baby Yasmin,

0:14:56 > 0:14:59taken just one minute after she was born.

0:15:01 > 0:15:02It's hitting home now.

0:15:04 > 0:15:06It's all starting to...

0:15:06 > 0:15:08Starting to realise what's happening.

0:15:08 > 0:15:10They were great in the ambulance with her,

0:15:10 > 0:15:12and the hospital when we arrived as well.

0:15:12 > 0:15:14They were standing, ready, waiting on us coming in.

0:15:14 > 0:15:17I couldn't ask for any better.

0:15:18 > 0:15:23If it hadn't been for them being so quick and being so good,

0:15:23 > 0:15:26you just don't know what the effects might have been.

0:15:41 > 0:15:46at last Julie and Ena can say thank you to paramedic John Randle and the

0:15:46 > 0:15:49ambulance driver, Ron Drane, who came to their rescue.

0:15:52 > 0:15:56- It does.- Absolutely! It brings back memories.

0:15:56 > 0:15:58It's strange to be back again.

0:15:58 > 0:16:00Well, look, you've got a bit of a tear in your eye.

0:16:00 > 0:16:03I know that from this point on you don't remember a huge amount,

0:16:03 > 0:16:07but John and Ron, the two paramedics that helped you that day,

0:16:07 > 0:16:12well they are just over there and they are going to answer some questions for you.

0:16:15 > 0:16:16Enjoy, ladies.

0:16:24 > 0:16:27Hello! Hello, Ron.

0:16:27 > 0:16:29Hello, darling, you're looking lovely.

0:16:34 > 0:16:36- Lovely to see you too. - It's 15 years, is it?

0:16:36 > 0:16:3814 and a half.

0:16:38 > 0:16:39Can you remember much about the day?

0:16:39 > 0:16:43- Not a lot.- When you got to hospital, everything checked out OK?

0:16:43 > 0:16:44Everything was perfect.

0:16:44 > 0:16:46Ron radioed ahead, didn't you?

0:16:46 > 0:16:47Yes.

0:16:47 > 0:16:50- I had them waiting on you. - You definitely did!

0:16:50 > 0:16:54Hopefully it wasn't too long a wait for you when we were...

0:16:54 > 0:16:55You called us straightaway?

0:16:55 > 0:17:01It seemed to me to be just minutes away. You made quite a racket, Ron!

0:17:02 > 0:17:05I just felt as if I'd just left the roadside

0:17:05 > 0:17:07and then I was at Dundonald hospital.

0:17:07 > 0:17:08Had any more children since?

0:17:08 > 0:17:10Another one after her, but...

0:17:10 > 0:17:13- But not in a...- Not in a car, no. - No, not in a car!

0:17:13 > 0:17:16We made sure she was in the hospital!

0:17:16 > 0:17:19It's lovely to meet you and we are very pleased everything went well.

0:17:19 > 0:17:22The reassurance of us and the check-over you gave me

0:17:22 > 0:17:24that everything was fine, thank you.

0:17:24 > 0:17:26Thank you.

0:17:27 > 0:17:28- Thank you.- And you.

0:17:29 > 0:17:32And there's one more surprise in store for John and Ron.

0:17:34 > 0:17:39Well, I'm sure that was very special and I've got one more little treat.

0:17:42 > 0:17:45- Dear me, they kept that a secret! - You remember

0:17:45 > 0:17:47That gorgeous little baby?

0:17:47 > 0:17:48You are beautiful.

0:17:48 > 0:17:50- Our wee baby.- This is her.

0:17:50 > 0:17:57- Wow.- The little girl that you helped so much nearly 15 years ago,

0:17:57 > 0:17:58isn't she gorgeous?

0:17:58 > 0:18:01- She is beautiful.- I don't suppose you can remember much about it!

0:18:01 > 0:18:04- Not really!- Not really.

0:18:04 > 0:18:08- No.- Is there anything you'd like to say to these special guys?

0:18:08 > 0:18:09Thank you.

0:18:09 > 0:18:13God knows what could have happened without them.

0:18:14 > 0:18:17It's a pleasure to see you looking so well.

0:18:17 > 0:18:19You know, to meet you again.

0:18:19 > 0:18:21There you are, a little baby, now look at you.

0:18:21 > 0:18:24It's lovely. Lovely to meet you, it really is.

0:18:27 > 0:18:31Well, almost 15 years on and all's well that ends well.

0:18:31 > 0:18:33Yasmin has been reunited with the men

0:18:33 > 0:18:37that made her extraordinary arrival into the world a safe one.

0:18:42 > 0:18:45Up goes Billy Hamilton, Armstrong, yes!

0:18:48 > 0:18:52In 1982, Northern Ireland was gripped by World Cup fever...

0:18:54 > 0:18:58..when Billy Bingham's boys got to the finals in Spain.

0:18:59 > 0:19:02Today we have reunited some of the heroes of that time

0:19:02 > 0:19:04to reminisce about glories on the field.

0:19:06 > 0:19:08There's one of you there, Big Billy, look.

0:19:08 > 0:19:09That's the Austrian one.

0:19:09 > 0:19:11It's a goal!

0:19:11 > 0:19:15But there's one more person they still have to be reunited with,

0:19:15 > 0:19:20someone whose dulcet tones helped provide the soundtrack to that Spanish summer.

0:19:22 > 0:19:26The song Yer Man was the Northern Ireland team's official theme,

0:19:26 > 0:19:31and up front and centre of the single, Derry pop princess Dana.

0:19:34 > 0:19:40Everybody was so delighted that the Northern Ireland team had actually got through to going to Spain.

0:19:40 > 0:19:42Everybody was so proud.

0:19:42 > 0:19:44Everybody in Northern Ireland says "Yer Man",

0:19:44 > 0:19:50and I think at the time it was kind of the mascot for Northern Ireland.

0:19:50 > 0:19:53And it just seemed to flow so well, you know,

0:19:53 > 0:19:55"When yer man gets the ball,

0:19:55 > 0:19:58"Northern Ireland has it all".

0:19:58 > 0:19:59My brothers would have done the bulk of it,

0:19:59 > 0:20:02and I think myself and my husband chipped in as well.

0:20:02 > 0:20:05We wanted a real flavour of Northern Ireland

0:20:05 > 0:20:09so it has the tin whistle and it has the drums and, um...

0:20:10 > 0:20:12It just kind of grew out of that,

0:20:12 > 0:20:16and of course I have two brothers that are football fanatics.

0:20:16 > 0:20:20"We should record this, we should record this with the team."

0:20:20 > 0:20:24We went to meet Billy Bingham and he liked it.

0:20:24 > 0:20:28Billy may have liked it, but when it came to recording the song,

0:20:28 > 0:20:31members of his team like Jimmy Nicholl

0:20:31 > 0:20:34weren't entirely in perfect harmony with the gaffer.

0:20:34 > 0:20:36I remember in the build-up to the World Cup somebody

0:20:36 > 0:20:40decided that we'll make this record.

0:20:40 > 0:20:43So it was a Sunday morning in Kensington in the studio.

0:20:45 > 0:20:48It was embarrassing, and big Gerry says, "This is not happening,

0:20:48 > 0:20:51"it's not working." Everybody was flat,

0:20:51 > 0:20:53everybody was a bit nervous and...

0:20:53 > 0:20:55There's are a few good singers in our camp

0:20:55 > 0:20:57and there's a few very bad ones.

0:20:57 > 0:21:01Jimmy Nicholl is probably the worst singer, secondly myself.

0:21:01 > 0:21:05I think we might have taken a lager or two to get us singing

0:21:05 > 0:21:07or to get us making some sort of noise.

0:21:07 > 0:21:09I don't know how she put up with us.

0:21:09 > 0:21:14A few pints helped us relax and helped loosen the vocal cords.

0:21:14 > 0:21:15So the lager came in,

0:21:15 > 0:21:20a few bottles of beer and then away you went, everybody thought they were Frank Sinatra, you know?

0:21:20 > 0:21:24So, did Dana know about the lads' secret confidence booster?

0:21:24 > 0:21:28I know that they were definitely somewhere very uncomfortable,

0:21:28 > 0:21:29in the studio.

0:21:29 > 0:21:34There definitely was a rumour that there was some cans of

0:21:34 > 0:21:39medicinal, medicinal lager brought in, but I didn't see them,

0:21:39 > 0:21:43so I cannot say yes or no.

0:21:43 > 0:21:45We will leave that to the men themselves.

0:21:45 > 0:21:50So there was Pat, there was Gerry and there was Felix Healy...

0:21:50 > 0:21:53actually was a singer.

0:21:53 > 0:21:55You nearly sing in desperation because you think,

0:21:55 > 0:21:57"I have to do this cos I have to get out."

0:22:01 > 0:22:05Today, for the first time in 35 years,

0:22:05 > 0:22:08Dana is meeting up with some members of the squad.

0:22:08 > 0:22:11It's a chance to relive some very special memories.

0:22:14 > 0:22:18When I look at the cover of the single,

0:22:18 > 0:22:24it's just a flood of very good memories and happy memories.

0:22:24 > 0:22:31Just that snap, and the picture itself is surrounded by a lot of memories.

0:22:37 > 0:22:38You all right?

0:22:39 > 0:22:41- Thank you.- Welcome.

0:22:41 > 0:22:43- How are you doing? - Nice to see you again.

0:22:43 > 0:22:47Welcome back, welcome back.

0:22:47 > 0:22:50Deja vu. As you can see, we've got the record back

0:22:50 > 0:22:51Oh, yes!

0:22:51 > 0:22:54- No!- That's it there, yeah.

0:22:54 > 0:22:56That cannot be you, that cannot be you.

0:22:56 > 0:22:58You didn't look like Norman Wisdom there!

0:22:58 > 0:23:00It doesn't look any different!

0:23:00 > 0:23:03- Slightly maturing in the hair, that's all.- Exactly, exactly.

0:23:03 > 0:23:06- Who's that girl?- Aye, she was...

0:23:06 > 0:23:09Her hair has changed as well!

0:23:09 > 0:23:12Was that a tank top, Martin O'Neill had on?

0:23:13 > 0:23:16What kind of marks would you give the boys on the day?

0:23:16 > 0:23:18Oh, definitely a few black eyes!

0:23:19 > 0:23:20No more than average?

0:23:20 > 0:23:24No, no, ten out of ten I'd have given you when you started.

0:23:25 > 0:23:27Are yous kind of ready for this now?

0:23:27 > 0:23:29Ready as we'll ever be!

0:23:29 > 0:23:31Yeah? Yous are not as nervous now?

0:23:31 > 0:23:34There's not as many of us, I think that's what's...

0:23:34 > 0:23:35You can't hide in the choir.

0:23:35 > 0:23:37- Is that what you're saying? - That's it.

0:23:37 > 0:23:40- That's it.- Do you think we could have a wee, a wee, like...

0:23:40 > 0:23:41Just see how the voice is?

0:23:41 > 0:23:44Billy, why don't you choose a warm up?

0:23:44 > 0:23:45LAUGHTER

0:23:48 > 0:23:50That's my usual warm up!

0:23:50 > 0:23:51Aye!

0:23:53 > 0:23:55Usual warm up about, eight pints!

0:23:57 > 0:24:00- DEEP VOICE:- Pat talks like that and sings like that.

0:24:00 > 0:24:04- So he's got a...- We can't all sing like that.- He's got a double bass.

0:24:05 > 0:24:07Described as a bass baritone.

0:24:07 > 0:24:09Bass baritone.

0:24:09 > 0:24:10What's a bass baritone?

0:24:10 > 0:24:14# When yer man gets the ball Northern Ireland has it all... #

0:24:14 > 0:24:15That's big Pat.

0:24:15 > 0:24:18Are you going to stand there and take that?

0:24:18 > 0:24:19Yeah!

0:24:23 > 0:24:25Unlike Scotland and England,

0:24:25 > 0:24:28who were both invited onto Top Of The Pops,

0:24:28 > 0:24:31the Northern Ireland song makers were never actually filmed

0:24:31 > 0:24:32singing the song.

0:24:32 > 0:24:34# We'll fly the flag... #

0:24:34 > 0:24:37Today we are going to put that right,

0:24:37 > 0:24:39but first the boys are going to need some help.

0:24:41 > 0:24:43Of course there's fewer of us now this time,

0:24:43 > 0:24:47I thought you might like to have a few more voices coming in,

0:24:47 > 0:24:51so I've invited some special people to come and help us.

0:24:52 > 0:24:57Fans then and still fans now, and more than willing to swell their choir's ranks.

0:25:03 > 0:25:04Are you all in good voice, boys?

0:25:04 > 0:25:08- ALL:- Aye! - Brilliant.- Right, who needs a sheet?

0:25:10 > 0:25:13OK, so they are going to play the music to it.

0:25:13 > 0:25:15Just follow me and I'll be right behind you.

0:25:17 > 0:25:19Are you ready, guys?

0:25:20 > 0:25:23One, two, one, two, three...

0:25:33 > 0:25:37# When yer man gets the ball Northern Ireland has it all

0:25:37 > 0:25:40# Oh, we're off to Spain Never mind the rain

0:25:40 > 0:25:42# When yer man gets the ball

0:25:42 > 0:25:46# When yer man gets the ball We'll be cheering, one and all

0:25:46 > 0:25:49# Oh, we'll have a go And the goals will flow

0:25:49 > 0:25:51# When yer man gets the ball!

0:25:51 > 0:25:55# Well the times have been tough now it's time to do our stuff

0:25:55 > 0:25:58# Side by side, we'll go to Spain

0:25:58 > 0:26:00# Show them how to play the game

0:26:00 > 0:26:02# Oh, we'll score a goal or two

0:26:02 > 0:26:04# And we'll show them what to do

0:26:04 > 0:26:06# Yes, we'll run until we drop

0:26:06 > 0:26:11# And we're sure to reach the top

0:26:11 > 0:26:15# When yer man gets the ball Northern Ireland has it all

0:26:15 > 0:26:18# Oh, we're off to Spain Never mind the rain

0:26:18 > 0:26:20# When yer man gets the ball

0:26:20 > 0:26:24# When yer man gets the ball We'll be cheering, one and all

0:26:24 > 0:26:26# Oh, we'll have a go And the goals will flow

0:26:26 > 0:26:29# When yer man gets the ball!

0:26:29 > 0:26:32# We'll be dancing on the planes

0:26:32 > 0:26:34# We'll be singing in the rain

0:26:34 > 0:26:38# And the mighty teams will fear Northern Ireland when we're near

0:26:38 > 0:26:40# When the final whistle blows

0:26:40 > 0:26:42# We'll be there, and heaven knows!

0:26:42 > 0:26:45# Yes we'll play for victory

0:26:45 > 0:26:48# And then all the world will see

0:26:48 > 0:26:50# It's a goal!

0:26:50 > 0:26:53# When yer man gets the ball Northern Ireland has it all

0:26:53 > 0:26:56# Oh, we're off to Spain Never mind the rain

0:26:56 > 0:26:57# When yer man gets the ball

0:26:57 > 0:27:02# When yer man gets the ball We'll be cheering, one and all

0:27:02 > 0:27:04# Oh, we'll have a go And the goals will flow

0:27:04 > 0:27:07# When yer man gets the ball!

0:27:07 > 0:27:10# Viva, Northern Ireland... #

0:27:10 > 0:27:12Now, just as then,

0:27:12 > 0:27:15none of the players winning awards for their singing prowess,

0:27:15 > 0:27:20but without a doubt the song captured the pride of that time

0:27:20 > 0:27:24when the boys in green made their name on the world stage.

0:27:26 > 0:27:29# When yer man gets the ball, Northern Ireland... #

0:27:29 > 0:27:31Before I came into the recording studio, you think,

0:27:31 > 0:27:34"Oh, jeez, I don't fancy this at all." In the end we enjoyed it.

0:27:34 > 0:27:38And the supporters came in to make it even more vociferous

0:27:38 > 0:27:40and enhance it and it was great.

0:27:40 > 0:27:41# The goals will flow... #

0:27:41 > 0:27:43We really enjoyed the craic today.

0:27:43 > 0:27:47A brilliant turn-out, but that's the great thing about this Irish team,

0:27:47 > 0:27:50the support they have, that's our 12th man.

0:27:50 > 0:27:53It's great to be able to give something back to the fans,

0:27:53 > 0:27:56because they were brilliant, they supported us throughout that tournament

0:27:56 > 0:28:00and Dana really kept us going and kept us getting through it as well, it was a pleasure.

0:28:00 > 0:28:02I thought it was absolutely wonderful.

0:28:02 > 0:28:05I thought they sang fantastically well,

0:28:05 > 0:28:11brought back 1982 and the fantastic victory that they had in beating Spain.

0:28:11 > 0:28:14Nobody can ever take that away.
