0:01:00 > 0:01:03Let's get the show on the road!

0:01:15 > 0:01:18Early summer in Wales,

0:01:18 > 0:01:22and it's turning out to be the wettest since records began.

0:01:22 > 0:01:26FORECAST: 'Already more rain in the south, it's spreading northwards,

0:01:26 > 0:01:27'again, some of it heavy.

0:01:27 > 0:01:29'The wind is strongest in the south and west...

0:01:29 > 0:01:30'..wet and windy,

0:01:30 > 0:01:33'so outdoor activities could be quite challenging.'

0:01:33 > 0:01:36Everyone's hoping for good weather,

0:01:36 > 0:01:39not least the inhabitants of Pritchard Street

0:01:39 > 0:01:40in South Wales' Ely Valley.

0:01:40 > 0:01:44This summer they're stringing up the bunting to celebrate

0:01:44 > 0:01:47the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

0:01:47 > 0:01:49Oh, there's a big thing in the middle!

0:01:49 > 0:01:50Roy's up the top.

0:01:50 > 0:01:52Up you go.

0:01:52 > 0:01:56These 88 households have held street parties to mark every big occasion since the 1940s,

0:01:56 > 0:02:00from VE Day to Royal Weddings.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03Well, it means a chance for everybody to get together

0:02:03 > 0:02:06and have a good time, and reacquaint with each other.

0:02:06 > 0:02:10Valleys communities are very close-knit,

0:02:10 > 0:02:14and in Pritchard Street everyone from young to old gets involved...

0:02:14 > 0:02:15My dad lives down by there,

0:02:15 > 0:02:19I live by here, and my brother lives over there.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22..including long-term resident Marian Owen.

0:02:22 > 0:02:24In this street you never ever feel alone.

0:02:24 > 0:02:28and as you grow older, I think you need that...

0:02:28 > 0:02:32That you need that, you know, a coming together.

0:02:33 > 0:02:36Parties on Pritchard Street are a cut above the norm.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40Everyone is expected to wear fancy dress.

0:02:40 > 0:02:44This year the organising committee has asked Marian to appear as the queen.

0:02:44 > 0:02:47- A cloak?- Yes.

0:02:47 > 0:02:50A long dress? Oh, I don't know.

0:02:50 > 0:02:51Can we have another bunting?

0:02:51 > 0:02:54Roy, ease up on the cord!

0:02:54 > 0:02:57- A crown?- No, a tiara.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00Oh, I beg your pardon.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03Wayne, let it come out a bit from there.

0:03:03 > 0:03:07With over 200 residents plus friends and relatives coming from all over,

0:03:07 > 0:03:11Pritchard Street is pulling out all the stops and laying on a big spread...

0:03:11 > 0:03:15We've got a bit of a production line going here.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18..but with the gloomy weather forecast for the Jubilee weekend,

0:03:18 > 0:03:21will their big day be a big washout?

0:03:21 > 0:03:24The most important part of today is that it doesn't rain.

0:03:24 > 0:03:26Please, Mr Weatherman, be kind.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29Derek, I'm talking to you!

0:03:37 > 0:03:38Also hoping for good weather

0:03:38 > 0:03:42are Wales' 7,000 odd hoteliers and guesthouse owners,

0:03:42 > 0:03:45for whom a washout summer could spell disaster.

0:03:46 > 0:03:48This year, a new establishment has joined their ranks -

0:03:48 > 0:03:53on the border between Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion, is Hammet House.

0:03:54 > 0:03:57Until recently, it was a failing country hotel,

0:03:57 > 0:04:00then Philippa and Owen Gale bought it

0:04:00 > 0:04:02and invested their life savings

0:04:02 > 0:04:04to transform it into a luxury retreat.

0:04:06 > 0:04:08It's an ambitious project.

0:04:08 > 0:04:12We have got plans to redevelop this into a hot spa pool,

0:04:12 > 0:04:16and then some spa treatment rooms on the inside here.

0:04:16 > 0:04:22As you can see, we've got a lot of work to do to get to that stage.

0:04:22 > 0:04:27The couple are giving the interior an uncompromisingly modern makeover,

0:04:27 > 0:04:31something that's not to everyone's taste in this part of Welsh Wales.

0:04:31 > 0:04:36We did have one lady who stomped in and told me that I couldn't do this to this house -

0:04:36 > 0:04:39didn't I know this was a much-loved house?

0:04:39 > 0:04:41And I was sort of... felt like telling her,

0:04:41 > 0:04:42"Well, actually, it's my house!"

0:04:44 > 0:04:47Summer is the busiest season in the hotel calendar,

0:04:47 > 0:04:50and Owen and Philippa face a steep learning curve.

0:04:50 > 0:04:52They're just weeks away from a run of weddings,

0:04:52 > 0:04:56and as most event bookings come from personal recommendations,

0:04:56 > 0:04:59it's crucial for future business that these go well.

0:05:01 > 0:05:07We've done quite a few big dinners and banquets for large numbers,

0:05:07 > 0:05:10but it's not... It's just not the same as a WEDDING!

0:05:10 > 0:05:16Um, yeah, weddings have a whole load of other issues, don't they?

0:05:16 > 0:05:18Yes, for a bride it has to be perfect.

0:05:18 > 0:05:20It is their special day,

0:05:20 > 0:05:23and we certainly can't ruin it!

0:05:23 > 0:05:26We have a wedding coming up that was booked before we took over,

0:05:26 > 0:05:31who wanted a nice old-fashioned country-house-hotel wedding,

0:05:31 > 0:05:34which is what this place was previously,

0:05:34 > 0:05:37and when we told them it's going to be completely different,

0:05:37 > 0:05:40there were a few panicked ladies, weren't there?

0:05:40 > 0:05:45Dan and Michelle booked their wedding with the previous owners of the hotel over a year ago.

0:05:45 > 0:05:49We found out when we came in to make the first payment on the wedding.

0:05:49 > 0:05:52Nobody had actually told us beforehand

0:05:52 > 0:05:54that the place was being sold,

0:05:54 > 0:05:57so that sort of came as a bit of a shock.

0:05:57 > 0:06:02The good thing is they've basically left the outside the way it's always been, which is nice.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10So far, the couple haven't been big on detail...

0:06:11 > 0:06:13There's no plan for the day, really,

0:06:13 > 0:06:16so it's just going with the flow with how the day goes.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19..but, in reality, a great deal of organisation is needed

0:06:19 > 0:06:23to ensure their big day runs smoothly.

0:06:23 > 0:06:26The key point is pre-planning everything

0:06:26 > 0:06:29down to the smallest detail.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32Me and Michelle, neither of us are that regimental

0:06:32 > 0:06:33when it comes to something like this.

0:06:33 > 0:06:36I'll be happier once I've actually got a list of everything,

0:06:36 > 0:06:38and the times,

0:06:38 > 0:06:41and who's doing what at each time - what time the DJ's arriving,

0:06:41 > 0:06:43we'll have to get the room cleared ready for him to set up,

0:06:43 > 0:06:46what time are they having their evening buffet,

0:06:46 > 0:06:49what are we putting the evening buffet on.

0:06:49 > 0:06:51For novice wedding organiser Philippa,

0:06:51 > 0:06:54this laid-back couple pose a real challenge.

0:06:54 > 0:06:58And the numbers the same for the day and the evening, aren't they?

0:06:58 > 0:07:00With, er...

0:07:00 > 0:07:04So it's 90 in the day? And then evening?

0:07:04 > 0:07:09- We've got another 40... - Plus 40.- Yeah.

0:07:09 > 0:07:11- You're not having a receiving line.- No.

0:07:11 > 0:07:13Makes it less regimental, to be honest.

0:07:13 > 0:07:16- Yes, more fitting in with your... you want it to run as...- Relaxed.

0:07:16 > 0:07:20- ..relaxed and informal, don't you, yeah?- Yeah.

0:07:20 > 0:07:22You've got desserts included as well,

0:07:22 > 0:07:27- so there'll be a selection of cheesecakes...- Black Forest gateau would marvellous.

0:07:27 > 0:07:28Black Forest gateau, OK.

0:07:28 > 0:07:31Just make sure there's one whole one ready for the groom.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34With the wedding just over a week away,

0:07:34 > 0:07:37it looks like Philippa has her work cut out.

0:07:37 > 0:07:41I'm feeling, erm, almost in control at the moment.

0:07:41 > 0:07:46I can't foresee any problems!

0:07:46 > 0:07:49Erm, just endless lists of little things that need to be done.

0:08:00 > 0:08:01On the coast of South Wales,

0:08:01 > 0:08:04a break in the weather brings the first crowd of the season

0:08:04 > 0:08:07to the seaside resort of Barry Island.

0:08:09 > 0:08:13Try and win a goldfish, all wet and orange! You having a go?

0:08:13 > 0:08:19The washout summers of recent years have seen visitor numbers dwindle.

0:08:19 > 0:08:20But five years ago,

0:08:20 > 0:08:24Barry's declining fortunes were given a dramatic boost.

0:08:24 > 0:08:28A popular TV sitcom has put Barry Island firmly on the TV tourism map.

0:08:34 > 0:08:37Linda Bailey is a guide for the official Gavin And Stacey Tour,

0:08:37 > 0:08:42taking visitors in their thousands to the filming locations used in the series.

0:08:43 > 0:08:48Sometimes it can be challenging, but more often than not, it's just fun.

0:08:51 > 0:08:53Testing, testing!

0:08:53 > 0:08:55It's working, Dave.

0:08:55 > 0:08:58A little bit of acting involved, in as much as you're a character.

0:08:58 > 0:09:02I take on like the Nessa second-cousin bit.

0:09:02 > 0:09:04I'm Sally from the Rhondda Valley.

0:09:04 > 0:09:06Set these song sheets up.

0:09:08 > 0:09:10Hope we've got a few good singers on here.

0:09:13 > 0:09:16If you know the words to Islands In The Stream, just sing along.

0:09:18 > 0:09:21It's thought that Gavin And Stacey has boosted visitor numbers

0:09:21 > 0:09:23by as much as 25%...

0:09:23 > 0:09:26There you are, fabulous.

0:09:26 > 0:09:29..and Barry is now one of the most popular TV and film locations

0:09:29 > 0:09:31to visit in the UK.

0:09:32 > 0:09:36Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. What's occurring?

0:09:36 > 0:09:39- LAUGHTER - Tell me where you've come from. Abbie?

0:09:39 > 0:09:41Derbyshire.

0:09:41 > 0:09:42Oh! Absolutely fabulous!

0:09:42 > 0:09:44Karen?

0:09:44 > 0:09:45Birmingham.

0:09:45 > 0:09:48Fabulous! Gareth?

0:09:48 > 0:09:49Only Bridgend.

0:09:49 > 0:09:53Right, that's fabulous. I'd like now to introduce our driver.

0:09:53 > 0:09:55Now, can anyone guess his name?

0:09:55 > 0:09:57THEY ALL LAUGH

0:09:57 > 0:10:02These diehard fans have travelled from all over the UK and beyond

0:10:02 > 0:10:04to take this tour.

0:10:04 > 0:10:07Riding on Dave's actual coach from the series,

0:10:07 > 0:10:09they'll visit a dozen or so filming locations,

0:10:09 > 0:10:12some are more memorable than others.

0:10:12 > 0:10:16Including the church where Nessa almost married Dave.

0:10:17 > 0:10:20My college went in last time and there was a funeral going on.

0:10:22 > 0:10:24Wasn't very welcoming, I tell you.

0:10:24 > 0:10:26So she was Nessy-fied bride.

0:10:26 > 0:10:29She said she wanted to be look basically like a fat Boudicca,

0:10:29 > 0:10:32and she was determined to wear those boots.

0:10:32 > 0:10:35And they said, "Are you sure you want to wear them?"

0:10:35 > 0:10:37I said, "Yeah. For comfort, why suffer?!"

0:10:39 > 0:10:42All right then, here we go.

0:10:44 > 0:10:46Once you've had your photographs in here,

0:10:46 > 0:10:50speak nicely to Dave, he'll let you sit in the driver seat.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53Don't touch any of the controls though, all right?

0:10:56 > 0:10:57Everybody loves it,

0:10:57 > 0:11:00they love having their photograph taken in Dave's seat.

0:11:00 > 0:11:03And quite often, with Dave. I don't know what it is,

0:11:03 > 0:11:05he's just got that "je ne sais quoi", I reckon.

0:11:07 > 0:11:09Next stop, Nessa's caravan park home,

0:11:09 > 0:11:12and the base for her fortune-telling business.

0:11:12 > 0:11:14We're not allowed to go IN the caravan,

0:11:14 > 0:11:16but we can all stand outside.

0:11:18 > 0:11:19SHE LAUGHS

0:11:19 > 0:11:22Normally this location is a prime photo opportunity.

0:11:22 > 0:11:26Oh, I can't believe this weather, sorry, guys.

0:11:26 > 0:11:27But not today.

0:11:27 > 0:11:30That's where the bus pulled up.

0:11:30 > 0:11:33They've had a new front since we were last here.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36I don't think we're going to stay long here, right?

0:11:36 > 0:11:39That was our Nessa.

0:11:39 > 0:11:40Inside the caravan, of course.

0:11:40 > 0:11:42SHE LAUGHS

0:11:42 > 0:11:45Quite a few people like having a photograph here,

0:11:45 > 0:11:46but you're welcome to borrow this.

0:11:46 > 0:11:51I know it's not a crystal ball, but times are 'ard.

0:11:51 > 0:11:54Anyone want to put Nessa's scarf on?

0:11:54 > 0:11:57So, we're giving up and going back to the coach. I don't blame them.

0:11:59 > 0:12:01What's the future looking like?

0:12:01 > 0:12:02- Rain.- Yeah!

0:12:04 > 0:12:05Wind, hurricanes.

0:12:05 > 0:12:08The elements may be against them,

0:12:08 > 0:12:11but these TV tourists are made of sterner stuff.

0:12:11 > 0:12:13Start the bus up, love.

0:12:13 > 0:12:16Sorry about the wind-sweeping experience there.

0:12:18 > 0:12:20It's onwards to Stacey's house.

0:12:32 > 0:12:35Torrential rain may have spoiled the early summer for many,

0:12:35 > 0:12:39but for some, it's just what they've been hoping for.

0:12:42 > 0:12:43In the foothills of Snowdonia,

0:12:43 > 0:12:46two enthusiasts and their families are on a quest.

0:12:49 > 0:12:52Isn't this fantastic, absolutely beautiful.

0:12:52 > 0:12:56Andrew Smith and John Piggott are wild swimmers,

0:12:56 > 0:13:01spending their free time hunting out new bathing spots to explore,

0:13:01 > 0:13:06far from the safety of lifeguards and swimming pool rules.

0:13:06 > 0:13:10I wouldn't say that danger is one of the attractions,

0:13:10 > 0:13:14it's more about enjoyment and knowing that it's not dangerous.

0:13:15 > 0:13:18Despite the water temperature being a chilly 12 degrees Celsius,

0:13:18 > 0:13:23these two shun wetsuits in favour of a more natural approach.

0:13:23 > 0:13:25For me, wild swimming is about

0:13:25 > 0:13:29being immersed in the fabric of the environment that you're in.

0:13:29 > 0:13:31I don't have anything against wetsuits

0:13:31 > 0:13:34if people want to wear them, and I prefer not to.

0:13:34 > 0:13:38I want to have as little between me and the environment as possible.

0:13:38 > 0:13:40I want to feel the water.

0:13:40 > 0:13:43If there's fish in there or weeds, then I want to feel those as well.

0:13:44 > 0:13:47'For other people's consideration, I might wear some swimming trunks.

0:13:47 > 0:13:49'I will be today.'

0:13:50 > 0:13:53John has been wild swimming since childhood...

0:13:53 > 0:13:56and swims every day if he can.

0:13:58 > 0:14:02I think some people sort of would actually like to do it,

0:14:02 > 0:14:04but then don't think they can.

0:14:04 > 0:14:07All sorts of people say all sorts of things, but,

0:14:07 > 0:14:12I'm old enough now, I don't care what people think anymore, so it's good fun.

0:14:12 > 0:14:14Very excited! HE LAUGHS

0:14:14 > 0:14:17Surrounded by sea on three sides, with 568 lakes

0:14:17 > 0:14:20and over 1,000 rivers and streams,

0:14:20 > 0:14:23Wales is a paradise for wild swimmers.

0:14:23 > 0:14:26And while some will happily bathe all year round,

0:14:26 > 0:14:28for most, summer is the season to venture out.

0:14:32 > 0:14:34The summer makes it SO much easier.

0:14:34 > 0:14:36We've just got a couple of ruck sacks,

0:14:36 > 0:14:39and we have it loaded up with warm clothes to get in afterwards.

0:14:39 > 0:14:41And it's not blowing a gale.

0:14:41 > 0:14:44Yeah, in the summer, everything's fair game.

0:14:55 > 0:14:57Oh, absolutely wonderful!

0:14:57 > 0:15:00Best swim I've ever done, I think, this one.

0:15:00 > 0:15:02Whoo!

0:15:10 > 0:15:13More than two thirds of weddings are held in the summer,

0:15:13 > 0:15:17and for Wales' hotel and catering business it's the busiest season.

0:15:18 > 0:15:22In deepest West Wales, at Hammet House,

0:15:22 > 0:15:23it's Dan and Michelle's big day.

0:15:25 > 0:15:26With their reputation at stake,

0:15:26 > 0:15:31Owen and Philippa are keen to ensure the event is a success.

0:15:31 > 0:15:35- All good?- Yeah.- Yeah, they should be here about quarter past three-ish,

0:15:35 > 0:15:36but, yeah.

0:15:36 > 0:15:37I'll do my best.

0:15:37 > 0:15:39Excellent. That's all we can ask.

0:15:41 > 0:15:44In this area of Wales, people talk, word gets around,

0:15:44 > 0:15:48the grapevine's very, very active, so, yeah, we've got to make sure...

0:15:49 > 0:15:51We've got to do our best

0:15:51 > 0:15:53to make sure that everything is absolutely perfect.

0:15:53 > 0:15:55Good colour.

0:15:55 > 0:15:57Everything is checked.

0:15:57 > 0:15:59Oh, perfect.

0:15:59 > 0:16:00From the welcoming Pimm's drinks...

0:16:02 > 0:16:06..To the Hammet House signature canapes that chef Ben is whipping up in the kitchen.

0:16:08 > 0:16:11- How fast...?- We're starting to plate up in a second

0:16:11 > 0:16:13and then obviously, it will take us about 15, 20 minutes.

0:16:13 > 0:16:15OK.

0:16:16 > 0:16:20I'm not sure what they're going to think of the flowers that we're doing.

0:16:23 > 0:16:25As the wedding party arrives,

0:16:25 > 0:16:27the Hammet House team springs into action.

0:16:29 > 0:16:32What will the hungry guests make of the fancy finger food?

0:16:32 > 0:16:35GUESTS CHATTER

0:16:37 > 0:16:39Well, I was a little wary.

0:16:39 > 0:16:41I wanted to make sure it was edible before I ate it.

0:16:41 > 0:16:44Not sure that I tasted it, but it looked good.

0:16:50 > 0:16:51Beetroot and goat's cheese.

0:16:51 > 0:16:54Oh, I don't like that! That was horrible!

0:16:55 > 0:16:59So far, the event's running to schedule.

0:16:59 > 0:17:02Smashing. That's a lovely, cheesy smile you've got there, love.

0:17:02 > 0:17:04Well done.

0:17:04 > 0:17:07In the next few minutes, we'll start to take the buffet out,

0:17:07 > 0:17:09putting it on the tables, which are at the top end of the ballroom.

0:17:09 > 0:17:13Formal photographs done, it's time for the wedding party to take in

0:17:13 > 0:17:15the new Hammet House decor,

0:17:15 > 0:17:18while the hog roast and buffet is prepared.

0:17:18 > 0:17:19Mmm, yummy.

0:17:19 > 0:17:21And opinion is mixed.

0:17:21 > 0:17:22I think it's really nice.

0:17:22 > 0:17:25- Not the plastic stuff.- Not the see-through plastic, maybe not.

0:17:25 > 0:17:26No, no.

0:17:29 > 0:17:32A bit more contemporary now since we've been here last.

0:17:32 > 0:17:36I don't like the retro look with it, I don't think it matches.

0:17:36 > 0:17:38No, sorry! That's my opinion, he asked me my opinion.

0:17:40 > 0:17:42I've just heard a few witterings of...

0:17:42 > 0:17:44"This is Llechryd not London,"

0:17:44 > 0:17:47and that sort of comment, so, there we are.

0:17:47 > 0:17:49It doesn't really bother us.

0:17:49 > 0:17:51We like it when people have got strong opinions

0:17:51 > 0:17:53cos if you're not getting people to react,

0:17:53 > 0:17:56obviously you're just doing something middle-of-the-road,

0:17:56 > 0:17:57so we wouldn't want to be doing that.

0:17:57 > 0:18:00Hey, Monkeys!

0:18:00 > 0:18:02To keep Dan and Michelle's wedding day on track,

0:18:02 > 0:18:06Owen's volunteered himself as master of ceremonies.

0:18:06 > 0:18:09I'm just looking for the groom at the moment.

0:18:09 > 0:18:11Not an easy task with this laid-back couple.

0:18:11 > 0:18:15Ladies and gentlemen, if you'd like to make your way through to the ballroom,

0:18:15 > 0:18:17the hog is served.

0:18:17 > 0:18:20- OK, where's Dan gone now? - I have no idea.

0:18:20 > 0:18:23The meal is ready, but before it can be served,

0:18:23 > 0:18:27the bride and groom need to be formally introduced to their guests.

0:18:27 > 0:18:30Dan's gone for a little wander to say hello to everybody.

0:18:30 > 0:18:32And Dan and Michelle keep wandering off.

0:18:34 > 0:18:36And Michelle's gone outside.

0:18:36 > 0:18:38Oh, no, photographer.

0:18:38 > 0:18:40We need to get a move on.

0:18:40 > 0:18:43If you grab your wife, get her in...

0:18:45 > 0:18:46Ladies and gentlemen,

0:18:46 > 0:18:49if you could all be upstanding for the bride and groom.

0:18:49 > 0:18:51CHEERING

0:18:54 > 0:18:55Ah, finally!

0:18:58 > 0:19:02At last, the wedding party can tuck into chef Ben's buffet,

0:19:02 > 0:19:05which hopefully will be to everyone's taste.

0:19:05 > 0:19:08Caramelised onions in there, couscous in the oven,

0:19:08 > 0:19:11corn on the cob is down there, tomato salad out there already...

0:19:11 > 0:19:15Ben's an experienced chef, well used to busy kitchens,

0:19:15 > 0:19:18but with Hammet House's reputation riding on this event,

0:19:18 > 0:19:21Philippa is keen to check that everything is under control.

0:19:23 > 0:19:24Is the bread baked off?

0:19:24 > 0:19:27- The bread is going to go into the oven in a second.- Right, OK.

0:19:27 > 0:19:29We need all the bread out straight away.

0:19:29 > 0:19:31We don't want to be running back and forth for bread.

0:19:31 > 0:19:35And what's that going on, do you know? On or in, to go out?

0:19:35 > 0:19:38Ummm, we haven't thought about it yet, to be honest with you.

0:19:38 > 0:19:40What... Are those accounted for?

0:19:40 > 0:19:43Yes, that's going to be couscous and some leaves.

0:19:44 > 0:19:46Hello!

0:19:47 > 0:19:48Ah, dear...

0:19:50 > 0:19:52Despite Philippa's anxiety,

0:19:52 > 0:19:54the happy couple are pleased with Ben's efforts.

0:19:56 > 0:19:58Everybody's been impressed with the food.

0:19:58 > 0:20:00Well, fair play, he's made it.

0:20:00 > 0:20:02Particularly Dan,

0:20:02 > 0:20:05whose request for Black Forest gateau has been granted.

0:20:05 > 0:20:07We'll have to go over and sample it on our table

0:20:07 > 0:20:10and we'll see how it tastes afterwards.

0:20:13 > 0:20:17The evening wears on with no hitches, and all parties seem happy.

0:20:20 > 0:20:22Everybody's had a nice few drinks,

0:20:22 > 0:20:25I think, a bit of merriment going on, a bit of dancing,

0:20:25 > 0:20:27yeah, a good night, I think.

0:20:30 > 0:20:33- Lovely food. - The best wedding ever.- Yeah.

0:20:34 > 0:20:37But in the kitchen, all is not well.

0:20:38 > 0:20:41Yes, just extremely tired and I'm quite glad it's over,

0:20:41 > 0:20:44- to be honest with you. - HE LAUGHS

0:20:44 > 0:20:45Ben's not happy.

0:20:46 > 0:20:52Some more demolished buffet plates, all going down very well.

0:20:52 > 0:20:53Oh great, that's great news.

0:20:53 > 0:20:56One slice of Black Forest gateau left.

0:20:56 > 0:20:58Oh, brilliant, I'm glad they enjoyed that.

0:21:02 > 0:21:05That's probably the most she ever talks to me, to be honest with you.

0:21:08 > 0:21:09I'm going to put these away.

0:21:12 > 0:21:15Ah, dear.

0:21:22 > 0:21:26Dan and Michelle's wedding has been a big success.

0:21:26 > 0:21:27Despite mixed reviews

0:21:27 > 0:21:30about the hotel's uncompromisingly modern interior,

0:21:30 > 0:21:35chef Ben's catering won the wedding party over,

0:21:35 > 0:21:37and the word has spread on the local grapevine.

0:21:37 > 0:21:39Another wedding booking?

0:21:39 > 0:21:41- That was a wedding viewing this afternoon.- Oh, right.

0:21:44 > 0:21:46But it's not all good news.

0:21:46 > 0:21:50We're really pleased with the food, especially.

0:21:50 > 0:21:54Ben did a great job. But now he reveals to us

0:21:54 > 0:21:57that he is going to be leaving us, unfortunately.

0:21:57 > 0:22:00Just as we're coming into busy wedding season,

0:22:00 > 0:22:02we're going to be losing our head chef,

0:22:02 > 0:22:04which is a huge problem.

0:22:05 > 0:22:09So it's just the next hurdle, basically.

0:22:09 > 0:22:14Hopefully we're going to jump over this hurdle and sprint on.

0:22:14 > 0:22:17- PHONE RINGS - Good afternoon, Hammet House...

0:22:23 > 0:22:25As storm clouds gather over Hammet House,

0:22:25 > 0:22:27in Barry, South Wales,

0:22:27 > 0:22:31Linda's Gavin and Stacey tour is reaching its climax.

0:22:38 > 0:22:41Right then, everyone, this is Stacey's house.

0:22:41 > 0:22:44Next door is where Doris lived,

0:22:44 > 0:22:48and right opposite there is Uncle Bryn's house.

0:22:48 > 0:22:51He used to come out to that window and wave, you know,

0:22:51 > 0:22:54and he was talcing himself off after a shower.

0:22:54 > 0:22:57If you'd like to come in, feel free to look around.

0:22:57 > 0:23:00For the keen fans who've travelled hundreds if not thousands of miles

0:23:00 > 0:23:02to see these filming locations,

0:23:02 > 0:23:06no detail is too small to be overlooked.

0:23:06 > 0:23:08When you get out the kitchen, the original omelette pan

0:23:08 > 0:23:12is still there if you want to cook an omelette for a photo shot.

0:23:12 > 0:23:16You can go in Stacey's bedroom, it's exactly as the film set.

0:23:16 > 0:23:20Unfortunately, we can't go to Gavin's house,

0:23:20 > 0:23:22cos that's in Dinas Powys, not Billericay.

0:23:22 > 0:23:27It's a cul-de-sac, and they just didn't want us there, really.

0:23:27 > 0:23:30Apparently Nessa drove her truck in, reversed it in one day,

0:23:30 > 0:23:33- and knocked something over. - SHE LAUGHS

0:23:33 > 0:23:35So we don't go there.

0:23:35 > 0:23:38I'd like to thank you all for coming on the tour today.

0:23:38 > 0:23:40We'll finish off outside Marco's

0:23:40 > 0:23:44and around to Nessa's slots, where we'll have our raffle.

0:23:44 > 0:23:48In the five years since the series was first shown,

0:23:48 > 0:23:52Stacey's house has been visited by over 7,000 TV tourists.

0:23:52 > 0:23:57Just look to your left, of course, there's the fabulous Barry Beach.

0:23:57 > 0:24:00And a recent survey of Gavin and Stacey viewers

0:24:00 > 0:24:01found that over three million of them

0:24:01 > 0:24:05wanted to visit Barry after seeing the sitcom.

0:24:05 > 0:24:08I'm just going to see if Gav and Stace are there.

0:24:08 > 0:24:10I've come up from Cornwall,

0:24:10 > 0:24:12and that's five hours on the train.

0:24:12 > 0:24:16That's far enough for me, anyway, and you've come via Turkey.

0:24:16 > 0:24:18Cornwall, Turkey, to here.

0:24:18 > 0:24:22Fabulous, thank you, life-size models.

0:24:22 > 0:24:25But if you stand by them and give them a cwtch

0:24:25 > 0:24:28and blur your eyes a bit, it looks like the real thing.

0:24:28 > 0:24:30I live in Gloucestershire, in Stroud,

0:24:30 > 0:24:33and then my friends are from Bristol.

0:24:33 > 0:24:37And we came to Wales just to go on the Gavin and Stacey tour.

0:24:37 > 0:24:40We've come from North Wales down here for this for the day,

0:24:40 > 0:24:43so we'll be travelling back later, but still it's not too bad.

0:24:43 > 0:24:45You've got enough time to sort of enjoy the day out

0:24:45 > 0:24:48and then a bit of time in Cardiff afterwards before we get the train back.

0:24:48 > 0:24:50I've come from Baltimore.

0:24:50 > 0:24:52This is actually my second time here.

0:24:52 > 0:24:56The show isn't super-popular in the United States,

0:24:56 > 0:24:58but it does have kind of a cult following.

0:24:58 > 0:25:01I wouldn't have known Barry existed if it weren't for Gavin and Stacey.

0:25:01 > 0:25:04We've got the Marco's Cafe behind as well.

0:25:04 > 0:25:06It's been really good. Yeah, really good.

0:25:06 > 0:25:09- The house was really good, visiting the house.- Yeah, nice.

0:25:09 > 0:25:10It was a shame about the weather,

0:25:10 > 0:25:13- but other than that, it was brilliant, really.- Yeah.

0:25:13 > 0:25:15Get your tickets ready.

0:25:15 > 0:25:17196. Ohhh!

0:25:17 > 0:25:20How many tickets did you have? You had loads, didn't you?

0:25:20 > 0:25:21You get the goodie bags.

0:25:21 > 0:25:24Number 222. All the twos.

0:25:24 > 0:25:25Oh, yes!

0:25:25 > 0:25:29Yes, I think it went really well. The bus didn't break down,

0:25:29 > 0:25:30the music box didn't blow up,

0:25:30 > 0:25:32and no-one fell off the coach, so we're fine.

0:25:32 > 0:25:35Oh...

0:25:35 > 0:25:37That was a good one.

0:25:45 > 0:25:47Back in the Ely Valley,

0:25:47 > 0:25:49the weather's held,

0:25:49 > 0:25:53and last-minute preparations for the Pritchard Street party are well under way.

0:25:54 > 0:25:56There's going to be a party

0:25:56 > 0:25:59for the Diamond Jubilee of the Queen.

0:25:59 > 0:26:01Kate, come and spray me, babe.

0:26:01 > 0:26:02Marian's neighbour Sadie

0:26:02 > 0:26:05is putting the finishing touches to her costume.

0:26:05 > 0:26:07We're just prepping ourselves now as grannies.

0:26:07 > 0:26:08The Queen's muckers, we are.

0:26:08 > 0:26:11My sexy pop socks.

0:26:12 > 0:26:14I even bought a granny bra, but I won't show you that.

0:26:14 > 0:26:16I have a surprise.

0:26:16 > 0:26:19- I have bloomers on. - THEY LAUGH

0:26:19 > 0:26:23Welcome to the Tonyrefail Street Party!

0:26:23 > 0:26:26Come on out of your houses, and show your faces.

0:26:26 > 0:26:32I'm Audrey Hepburn, but with blonde hair!

0:26:32 > 0:26:35The whole street's made an effort to dress up.

0:26:38 > 0:26:39Where do I sit?

0:26:39 > 0:26:42Sadie is going to have a makeover with me,

0:26:42 > 0:26:44which should be about six months, I think.

0:26:44 > 0:26:46THEY LAUGH

0:26:48 > 0:26:50As Marian gets the royal treatment,

0:26:50 > 0:26:53neighbour Dai, a factory foreman, is keeping alive a tradition

0:26:53 > 0:26:58started by his father at the Silver Jubilee in 1977.

0:26:58 > 0:27:00If my father's done it, it's all right to do it,

0:27:00 > 0:27:03and the way to go, and the street party is about tradition.

0:27:08 > 0:27:10Does that hurt?

0:27:10 > 0:27:12No, it's fine. Which do you think?

0:27:12 > 0:27:14- That's it, like Sadie got. - That's it.

0:27:14 > 0:27:16I got it. Have I got it, yeah?

0:27:16 > 0:27:18Right, I've got it.

0:27:20 > 0:27:23With her wave perfected, Marian is ready to make an appearance.

0:27:24 > 0:27:26All right?

0:27:29 > 0:27:31Best Welsh cake maker in the world, you are.

0:27:31 > 0:27:34Thank you. And the best neighbour in the world!

0:27:34 > 0:27:35- Ahhh!- Yeah.

0:27:37 > 0:27:39I think everyone's in high spirits,

0:27:39 > 0:27:42because of the weather and the fancy dress helps,

0:27:42 > 0:27:44out of character, so everyone is enjoying themselves.

0:27:44 > 0:27:49The street's oldest resident, 85-year-old Alice Hippsley,

0:27:49 > 0:27:52makes a grand entrance dressed as an Olympic torchbearer.

0:27:54 > 0:27:57Finally it's time for the traditional

0:27:57 > 0:28:00Pritchard Street Party Parade, and photograph.

0:28:01 > 0:28:02Cheese!

0:28:02 > 0:28:04Next time...

0:28:04 > 0:28:06I want to see a castle, some pubs...

0:28:06 > 0:28:08..the Americans do North Wales...

0:28:08 > 0:28:11The weather could be nicer, but that's not anybody's fault.

0:28:11 > 0:28:13We saw the... HE GIBBERS ..town.

0:28:13 > 0:28:15I'd like to know where they got all the rock.

0:28:15 > 0:28:17..Cardiff gets a deep clean...

0:28:17 > 0:28:19It's not a glamorous job.

0:28:19 > 0:28:22There's the culprit. Guilty as charged.

0:28:22 > 0:28:24..and we meet Wales' hardest-working Marchioness.

0:28:24 > 0:28:26Hey! Come here!

0:28:26 > 0:28:29Unless you're very rich, you have to be prepared to get your feet dirty.

0:28:29 > 0:28:32Work stops here with me.

0:28:32 > 0:28:33Oh, my!
