:00:24. > :00:28.into this. Or face a struggle to survive the rest of the year.
:00:28. > :00:32.have to try to keep your head above water. A time when good weather can
:00:32. > :00:37.make all things possible. And bad can leave dreams in tatters.
:00:37. > :00:42.weather could be nicer. It is not anyone's fault. This summer was
:00:42. > :00:48.extraordinary. Was that the cleverest idea, to take it down?
:00:48. > :00:53.is your laughter. Heartache. This can be a cruel game. Triumph.
:00:53. > :00:59.came second. Despair. The weather has beaten us again. These are our

:01:14. > :01:20.
:01:20. > :01:26.summer in Wales. Let's get the show Wales. Late summer. The tiny tidal

:01:32. > :01:37.Cwyfan's in the sea. -- St Cwyfan's Church in the Sea. It is a sure
:01:37. > :01:41.touch as Orton draws near. Today at low tide, Canon Madalaine Brady is
:01:41. > :01:45.heading out on foot across the causeway to conduct the last
:01:45. > :01:50.service of the year. I am doing two christenings, baptising a baby and
:01:50. > :01:57.a little girl. Am so pleased it is a lovely day. After this I will be
:01:57. > :01:59.retiring, so I will miss the place very much. While the Church is
:02:00. > :02:07.prepared and the families and their guests made their way out of the

:02:11. > :02:14.to say. I don't think anybody needs to get worried they will get stuck.
:02:14. > :02:20.I don't think I will miss walking over the causeway all that much,
:02:20. > :02:24.but everything else. Somebody once said that there are places where

:02:36. > :02:42.nature and continuity, I suppose. Hello. For the congregation, it is
:02:42. > :02:47.a day of mixed emotions. It is sad that Madalaine is leaving. She has

:04:11. > :04:15.the last weekend. Over 50% of the rights have gone already. We are
:04:15. > :04:20.down to dodgems, waltzers and bits and pieces. We had the jumping

:04:25. > :04:31.have gone. The Terminator has gone. There is not a lot here at the
:04:31. > :04:34.moment. For showmen Malcolm Davies, it is an emotional moment. I was
:04:35. > :04:40.talking to my wife the other night and I sat down and nearly cried. I
:04:40. > :04:43.have nothing to do. Whatever the weather conditions, Malcolm was
:04:43. > :04:48.always here first thing in the morning and last to leave at night.
:04:48. > :04:54.A loyal subject. A very loyal subject. Very good, absolutely

:04:58. > :05:03.As Vernon Kay prepares to open the gates, Ian Rogers, the Parc's owner,
:05:03. > :05:08.arrives with a task for the fairground team. To drain the

:05:12. > :05:19.the best ride on the park, even though it is 30 years old. It has
:05:19. > :05:24.to go. And I think it is more full now than it was at Easter. We have
:05:24. > :05:29.had a lot of rain. Once the park closes, he plans to demolish it to
:05:29. > :05:37.make way for an undercover leisure complex. This is a or boss, Ian
:05:37. > :05:42.Rogers. Give me five. Give me five! It is the end of an era and the
:05:42. > :05:46.fairground team's mood is gloomy. We will sit down and have this in a
:05:46. > :05:53.minute, then opened the gates to let the crowds flocking. All three
:05:53. > :06:00.of them. Slowly but surely, a few customers do trickle in but it is
:06:00. > :06:04.too little, too late. It is 1:55pm, nothing will happen. There is no
:06:04. > :06:08.people out there. It is not beach weather and people come to Barry
:06:08. > :06:15.Island for the beach. Then and decides to cut his losses and
:06:15. > :06:21.closes the fairground early. Nobody down there? No. I think we can
:06:21. > :06:28.safely close now. But if it is raining tomorrow, this will be the
:06:28. > :06:38.last day of the 2012 season at Barry Island. It is it, and of
:06:38. > :06:38.
:06:38. > :06:42.sports. Thank you very much and good night. For Wales' 7,000 what
:06:42. > :06:45.hotel and guest houses, summer is the busiest season and this year a
:06:45. > :06:50.new establishment joined their ranks. On the border between
:06:50. > :06:54.Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion, stands Hammet House. Until recently
:06:54. > :06:57.it was a failing country hotel but then Philippa and Owen Gale bought
:06:57. > :07:03.it and invested their life savings to transform it into a luxury
:07:03. > :07:11.retreat. It is an ambitious project. When you step through the door
:07:11. > :07:15.before it was kind of like an old people's home, sort of feel.
:07:15. > :07:18.couple are giving the interior and uncompromisingly modern makeover.
:07:18. > :07:22.But it is not everyone's taste in this part of Welsh Wales. We did
:07:22. > :07:27.have one lady who stopped in and told me that I could not do this to
:07:27. > :07:30.this house. I felt like telling her, actually, it is my house. More
:07:30. > :07:40.importantly, the ongoing refurbishment has meant that some
:07:40. > :07:43.of the Hotel's bedrooms could not With so much been the busiest
:07:43. > :07:47.season in the hotel trade, the couple have had to work quickly to
:07:47. > :07:52.get the redecoration finished. want it stripped and painted in our
:07:52. > :07:56.palate of greys. But one key function room where wedding
:07:56. > :07:59.receptions are held has been left untouched until now. Obviously a
:07:59. > :08:04.lot of brides are coming in and seeing front of the house and
:08:04. > :08:08.loving our new, contemporary feel, but obviously we have not done the
:08:08. > :08:15.ballroom yet. For Philippa Anne Darwin, this has been a long
:08:15. > :08:18.awaited makeover. -- and a wind. had a big wedding here last night,
:08:19. > :08:24.we have cleared up and now there for fitters are here. Hooray. We
:08:24. > :08:30.have been waiting for this day for quite a while. It is nice to see
:08:30. > :08:33.the old carpet going. We have got an lovely new parquet floor coming
:08:33. > :08:37.in. It is going to look a lot better come a which is essential
:08:37. > :08:40.now because we're getting potential brides coming into the house and we
:08:40. > :08:45.show them into the ballroom. They see the carpet, the old curtains
:08:45. > :08:54.and go, oh, yeah. One of last night's wedding guests can't resist
:08:54. > :09:03.taking a peek. And pays the price. We are having to take up the carpet
:09:03. > :09:07.now after last night. What did we do to it? Ruined. No, we are having
:09:07. > :09:12.a new floor. I nearly had a heart attack. Joking aside, there is a
:09:12. > :09:17.serious issue. It is just over two weeks before the next wedding so it
:09:17. > :09:21.is a tight timescale. An area this size would normally takes three to
:09:21. > :09:25.four weeks so it is very ambitious, but we will see how it goes. The
:09:25. > :09:29.worst thing that could happen is that we do not get it done in time.
:09:29. > :09:34.Along some -- the long summer days are a time to work hard and play
:09:34. > :09:41.hard. But the nights are already starting to draw in. As most of
:09:41. > :09:45.Wales heads to bed, another world awaits. Backstage at Cardiff's WOW
:09:45. > :09:51.Bar, a troupe of glamorous cabaret artists are preparing for another
:09:51. > :09:56.hard night on the tiles. I am not being funny with you, my face looks
:09:56. > :10:00.like a brown balloon. Brassier, otherwise known as Mark Venn, is
:10:00. > :10:05.one of the club's best-loved resident drag queens. Loads of
:10:05. > :10:09.times I have fallen out with Marcia. She is the dream child of Tom Jones
:10:09. > :10:16.and Shirley Bassey. They met in Merthyr Tydfil, did the dirty deed
:10:16. > :10:25.and Marcia was the product of that. All right, girls, let's get the
:10:26. > :10:29.In less than a week, Cardiff's large -- loudest and proudest will
:10:29. > :10:38.be taking to the streets for the capital's first ever Mardi Gras
:10:38. > :10:46.Parade. Give us a cheer. Oggi oggi oggi. We'll come the divine Miss
:10:46. > :10:51.Anne. Otherwise known as Marcia, whatever you want to call me. Miss
:10:51. > :10:59.would be nice. After entertaining the crowds until the early hours it
:10:59. > :11:02.is an early start for the WOW girls' big appearance. We have five
:11:02. > :11:09.drag-queen us to dress, not a glamorous life -- like you think it
:11:09. > :11:16.is, is it? It is not all feathers and sequins! We went for a nice
:11:16. > :11:20.metallic Lycra. One-way stretch. It will hold the fat bits in as well.
:11:20. > :11:27.Speak for yourself. I am at that age now, you know what I mean,
:11:27. > :11:36.bingo wings. It is a case of cover me up from head to toe, please.
:11:36. > :11:41.There is a sleeve for you there. I see Gypsy as a pity little flower,
:11:41. > :11:46.she is not a typical man. I cut myself the sleeve and thought it is
:11:46. > :11:51.fine. I have put it on. I can't get my mum man hands through it. There
:11:51. > :12:00.is a Swansea boy underneath all this. There you go, arm beautifully
:12:00. > :12:05.sewn in, not a mess at all. It will be snug. At Hammet House, the
:12:05. > :12:10.ballroom makeover is well under way. But with just two weeks to complete
:12:10. > :12:15.it, the pressure is on. We are pretty confident that we are going
:12:15. > :12:19.to make the deadline because we have to. There is a wedding booked,
:12:19. > :12:23.a big, big wedding but. We might be there with paint brushes the day
:12:23. > :12:28.before finishing off, but it will be done. It is looking better
:12:28. > :12:32.already. Will we be finished on time? Tell them to cancel the
:12:33. > :12:37.wedding. I don't think that is an option. In keeping with the rest of
:12:37. > :12:41.the hotel, Owen and Philippa have chosen an uncommon --
:12:41. > :12:45.uncompromising and conventional design. We knew we wanted a parquet
:12:45. > :12:49.floor. We did not know which colour. All the samples arrived of the
:12:49. > :12:55.different wards. We put them together, trying to pick. We
:12:55. > :12:59.thought they looked good together. I was not too sure at the beginning
:12:59. > :13:05.but it is growing on me. We thought it was a new idea but we have
:13:05. > :13:07.noticed it in a couple of other places. It is in Stella McCartney's
:13:07. > :13:15.shopping New York and a couple of places. No one else in
:13:15. > :13:19.Pembrokeshire. I knew keeping them random? Yes, totally random.
:13:19. > :13:22.pattern at all, that is what we want. Following a pattern would be
:13:22. > :13:28.a nightmare. You get something that does not look right, it would stand
:13:28. > :13:33.out. It is a risk, choosing to do this, but so far it is looking like
:13:33. > :13:37.it will pay off. There is a lot riding on this ballroom
:13:37. > :13:42.refurbishment. It is a massive part of the business here. We have got a
:13:42. > :13:45.patch of -- we have got a batch of brides waiting to see it finished
:13:45. > :13:49.picked for they make their final decision whether they will book
:13:49. > :13:55.with us for their wedding next year. It is important but it looks great.
:13:55. > :13:59.If people think it looks awful and don't put here, we will... I don't
:13:59. > :14:09.know what we will do. We will have to painted magnolia or something, I
:14:09. > :14:09.
:14:10. > :14:14.suppose. Early morning, Cardiff. The city's expert cleansing team
:14:14. > :14:19.have been called in to prepare the area surrounding the Senedd ready
:14:19. > :14:26.for the ceremony welcoming home Wales' Olympic Paralympic medal
:14:26. > :14:31.are hard at it. There will be lots of celebrations. We have come out
:14:31. > :14:36.at the crack of dawn to get it cleaned and sparkling, ready.
:14:36. > :14:44.Removing the chewing gum, all ready for lots of visitors. Russell is in
:14:44. > :14:48.his usual mood, moaning, grumpy. It is cold and windy. All the Welsh
:14:48. > :14:54.athletes that have done Wales proud, I think, they had medals were they
:14:54. > :14:57.were not expecting them, the Welsh people have done well. It hasn't
:14:58. > :15:02.been much of the summer, really, has it? It is getting darker in the
:15:02. > :15:08.mornings and cricket in the evenings. We are still busy in the
:15:08. > :15:13.winter months. As long as the weather is not in minus figures, we
:15:13. > :15:19.operate. They put up the bunting and the Christmas songs. It is a
:15:19. > :15:24.waste of money. It is brilliant. Bah humbug. It is a waste of money.
:15:24. > :15:27.That is the Senedd done and dusted. I am looking forward to do that --
:15:27. > :15:32.I'm looking forward to tonight. Russell has promised to buy BT. I
:15:32. > :15:35.have not had it been writing yet. It has been the team's busiest
:15:35. > :15:40.summer on record, with more events held in the capital than ever
:15:40. > :15:50.before. The cleaner Cardiff manager Juliette Gamlin appreciates her
:15:50. > :15:59.
:15:59. > :16:04.The team have worked really hard throughout the events of the summer
:16:05. > :16:13.so my hat off to them. As the welcoming ceremony gets under way,
:16:13. > :16:23.it is a proud moment for Rose and Brussels. Our London 12-12 gold
:16:23. > :16:32.
:16:32. > :16:39.medallists, alleged Davies, Tom Stones. Welcome home, Team GB.
:16:39. > :16:44.was a wicked buzz. Goose pimples. Amazing. The best part was the
:16:44. > :16:51.anthem. Amazing. Loved it. As life returns to normal in Cardiff, along
:16:51. > :16:58.the coast it is the end of an era for a much loved Welsh icon. At
:16:58. > :17:08.Barry Island's funfair, the team are dismantling the last of the
:17:08. > :17:09.
:17:09. > :17:15.riots. Back YouGov. Hard as you can. -- back you go. This will be
:17:15. > :17:20.cleared within the next couple of days. It is strange, but it is no
:17:20. > :17:27.different to what we have always had. It start to finish up and we
:17:28. > :17:30.empty the park out. Development starts and we won't be back. Fellow
:17:30. > :17:39.showman Henry Stanworth sympathisers. He's a bit too young
:17:39. > :17:44.to retire at the moment. His family have been going since 1800 so it is
:17:44. > :17:49.hard not to do it. There is no such thing as retiring. I'm a showman, I
:17:49. > :17:57.don't retire. I couldn't stand doing nothing. I would irritate
:17:57. > :18:06.myself. As the last of the rides leave be fair at -- the funfair,
:18:06. > :18:16.the demolition vehicles moving. respected but I am looking forward
:18:16. > :18:16.
:18:16. > :18:21.to the future. It has to be done. It is the end of an era for Barry
:18:21. > :18:28.Island. I don't think the fairground boys would be very happy.
:18:28. > :18:35.We are replacing it with something in the 21st century that will put
:18:35. > :18:43.Barry Island back on the map. Try to save the ride. It is -- the
:18:43. > :18:53.rhino. It is sentimental value. I have taken down the front of the
:18:53. > :18:57.jungle. I know. What do you do? I know. It all has to go. As the
:18:57. > :19:06.demolition continues, there is unexpected news. Although clearance
:19:06. > :19:09.work has started, construction has been delayed.
:19:09. > :19:13.Nobody has any spare money or any capital investment at the moment.
:19:13. > :19:18.The park will be open next year, I will be here next year hopefully
:19:18. > :19:23.and we will continue until after- work starts but until that time I
:19:23. > :19:26.will continue. The only time that this will not open as a pleasure
:19:26. > :19:30.park is when construction takes place and there is building here.
:19:30. > :19:38.It looks like Barry Island's funfair will live to see another
:19:38. > :19:43.summer season. While the past is brought crashing down in Barry
:19:43. > :19:47.Island, Owen and Philippa are looking to the future. In Hammet
:19:47. > :19:54.House, with two days to do next wedding, the makeover is almost
:19:54. > :20:04.complete. And not a moment too soon. At a prospective bride and groom
:20:04. > :20:12.are due any moment. -- the perspective. They have not Synod
:20:12. > :20:15.ballroom since it has been done. They will be our target market and
:20:15. > :20:23.hopefully the bull run will live up to their expectations.
:20:23. > :20:30.They at is quite bright, isn't it? -- and Batty is.
:20:30. > :20:33.-- that is. I am just trying to get these
:20:33. > :20:42.curtains up before the bride arrives. The more we have done, the
:20:42. > :20:46.better it will look for her. Time is ticking.
:20:46. > :20:50.I have seen the rest of the hotel and if it is anything like that it
:20:50. > :20:55.will be stunning. Obviously I would like everything to go well on the
:20:55. > :21:00.day but it is really about the two of us getting married. Are
:21:00. > :21:09.hopefully I won't get too upset if everything doesn't quite go up
:21:09. > :21:19.perfectly. -- so hopefully. It is time to see the ball run.

:21:24. > :21:29.say we miss it. It is beautiful. The colours, it is quite something.
:21:29. > :21:39.A lovely palette of pale grey on the walls. Their curtains. It is
:21:39. > :21:44.really nice. I really like the colours. At the floor is lovely.
:21:44. > :21:49.That's a relief! Owen and Philippa's modern makeover seems to
:21:49. > :21:56.have paid off. It is a nice relief to see a few
:21:56. > :22:01.smiles and see that they are happy. At but there is one more hurdle to
:22:01. > :22:07.overcome. I will show you to your room.
:22:07. > :22:12.See several weeks previously, Hammet House was visited by Joanna
