0:02:19 > 0:02:21Thanks a lot, bye-bye.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24Employers think, when they see me,

0:02:24 > 0:02:27they just think hassle, they think money, they think time,

0:02:27 > 0:02:31they think, "Oh, my God, there's going to be a dog in my office."

0:02:31 > 0:02:37And they just see it as a difference that they don't want to accommodate, basically.

0:02:39 > 0:02:43- Hi, I'm going to London, please. - 27-year-old Daniel

0:02:43 > 0:02:46will be joining Kerie at the training centre.

0:02:46 > 0:02:48I think my disability scares

0:02:48 > 0:02:53potential employers because they don't understand it.

0:02:53 > 0:02:56People think I'm incapable of working.

0:02:56 > 0:03:00They see the wheelchair first and my abilities second.

0:03:05 > 0:03:10Daniel and Kerie will be part of a unique group of job-seekers.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16It's really hard to just accept that I have this condition

0:03:16 > 0:03:17and have to live with it.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20Acknowledging I am different is something

0:03:20 > 0:03:24I've tried to run away from my entire life.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27Despite their determination to find work,

0:03:27 > 0:03:31they've struggled to be accepted by employers.

0:03:31 > 0:03:33- Ooh! - HE WHISTLES

0:03:33 > 0:03:37People ask me what's the hardest part of being disabled?

0:03:37 > 0:03:40It is getting a job.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43I am disabled but I'm not dead.

0:03:49 > 0:03:54Psychologist Nancy Doyle will be leading the group training.

0:03:55 > 0:03:57By the time someone has been diagnosed with a disability,

0:03:57 > 0:04:00they've had so much information about what they CAN'T do,

0:04:00 > 0:04:02what they struggle with.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05- What- I- want to do is find out what their strengths are,

0:04:05 > 0:04:09draw out some positives, really focus on what people CAN do,

0:04:09 > 0:04:12and then think about how could it develop a career path.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15- Hey, everybody, this is Daniel. - Hey, guys!- I'll leave them

0:04:15 > 0:04:17to introduce themselves.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20I can't see things. I'm blind, that's my THING.

0:04:20 > 0:04:24I have got artificial eyes. I lost my eyes when I was...

0:04:24 > 0:04:27Well, didn't lose them, that makes it sound like I put them somewhere,

0:04:27 > 0:04:29- but... - LAUGHTER

0:04:33 > 0:04:34Good boy.

0:04:44 > 0:04:48What does having a job say about you?

0:04:48 > 0:04:50Having a job is really important,

0:04:50 > 0:04:54so that I am seen as a person first, who just happens to be blind.

0:04:54 > 0:04:56I'm not a blind person.

0:05:03 > 0:05:07- ELECTRONIC VOICE:- Selected sound output device alert volume.

0:05:07 > 0:05:09Call centre jobs in Manchester.

0:05:10 > 0:05:14Dublin-born Kerie lives in Stockport.

0:05:14 > 0:05:15Your application for the role

0:05:15 > 0:05:18of call centre operative has been received.

0:05:18 > 0:05:22I just get up every day and apply and apply and apply

0:05:22 > 0:05:24and apply - I think that's the only thing, really,

0:05:24 > 0:05:25that's the only thing I can do.

0:05:25 > 0:05:29You will receive an e-mail confirming this information.

0:05:30 > 0:05:34In the past year, she's applied for over 100 jobs.

0:05:34 > 0:05:39I know I'm capable of working, of holding down a job, of leading

0:05:39 > 0:05:42an independent life, and that's the most important thing.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55Kerie was born three months prematurely

0:05:55 > 0:05:58and has been blind all her life.

0:05:59 > 0:06:03I was given too much oxygen in an incubator. That subsequently

0:06:03 > 0:06:06led to my retinas detaching.

0:06:06 > 0:06:08That's Braille.

0:06:08 > 0:06:11We put these little labels on them all,

0:06:11 > 0:06:15so I know which colour bin is what.

0:06:16 > 0:06:20At the age of ten, I had my eyes removed, so I now wear

0:06:20 > 0:06:23two prosthetic eyes.

0:06:23 > 0:06:26It was quite traumatic to begin with, but by the time

0:06:26 > 0:06:31we got home, we had, like, named both of the prosthetics -

0:06:31 > 0:06:32Pop and Eye.

0:06:32 > 0:06:36It was ridiculous, but, you know, I was ten, so, you know, it's OK.

0:06:38 > 0:06:43In 2015, Kerie made the brave decision to leave her family home

0:06:43 > 0:06:47and move to the UK, after securing her first ever job.

0:06:48 > 0:06:52Leaving Ireland, yeah, was daunting, I didn't know anyone here,

0:06:52 > 0:06:56I didn't have any friends, I didn't have any support or connections or anything like that,

0:06:56 > 0:06:59so I very much was kind of striking out on my own.

0:07:00 > 0:07:02I hate this bit.

0:07:02 > 0:07:06Kerie was working in a customer service role

0:07:06 > 0:07:08at an airline call centre,

0:07:08 > 0:07:10but the job only lasted nine months.

0:07:12 > 0:07:16The job didn't work out because, I guess, that whole situation

0:07:16 > 0:07:18with people not understanding

0:07:18 > 0:07:23the challenges that being blind in any workplace poses.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26I got told once that I couldn't be taking extra

0:07:26 > 0:07:30time for breaks because people would ask why I was getting

0:07:30 > 0:07:32extra time or special treatment.

0:07:32 > 0:07:35That's the kind of stuff you're up against.

0:07:35 > 0:07:37Oh, no, I'm not going to be able to open it.

0:07:37 > 0:07:39SHE SQUEALS

0:07:39 > 0:07:44Being able to stay here, it means everything. Not having to just

0:07:44 > 0:07:47go home and say, you know, "I've failed, it hasn't worked out."

0:07:49 > 0:07:52Starting back on the ladder, I guess, is what we are trying to do

0:07:52 > 0:07:55right now, because effectively right now I'm not on ANY ladder, so...

0:07:55 > 0:07:57I'm, like, ladderless.

0:08:15 > 0:08:17What are your biggest hopes for the future?

0:08:17 > 0:08:22My biggest hope for the future is...to get a job,

0:08:22 > 0:08:24to make something of myself.

0:08:24 > 0:08:28I just want to show people that, yeah, I'm disabled but I am employable.

0:08:28 > 0:08:32Just because I have no legs doesn't mean you can't employ me.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40Come on, be a good girl.

0:08:40 > 0:08:44Daniel lives in the village of Mintlaw in Scotland.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46Good boy. Come on.

0:08:49 > 0:08:52He became a double amputee after a life-changing accident

0:08:52 > 0:08:54five years ago.

0:08:55 > 0:08:59Since then, he's applied for over 800 jobs.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02It is horrible not hearing back.

0:09:02 > 0:09:06It's like getting rejected

0:09:06 > 0:09:09over and over and over again.

0:09:09 > 0:09:12My wheelchair is definitely a barrier to getting employment.

0:09:12 > 0:09:14People see it as a hassle.

0:09:18 > 0:09:21I've worked since I was 12 years old.

0:09:21 > 0:09:25I was a paperboy, I worked at a restaurant as a waiter for

0:09:25 > 0:09:30two years, and then I worked in a betting shop, and then I got

0:09:30 > 0:09:36a job as a graphic designer trainee, and then my accident happened.

0:09:45 > 0:09:49- Just push.- In 2012, Daniel was run over

0:09:49 > 0:09:51by a police vehicle.

0:09:54 > 0:09:58His mum Ann was the first to hear the news.

0:09:58 > 0:09:59We were in the car

0:09:59 > 0:10:02and my mobile phone rang and it was the police...

0:10:04 > 0:10:06And all they told me at the time was

0:10:06 > 0:10:08that he was getting worked on by paramedics.

0:10:11 > 0:10:15I got hit, and then, like, I got scalped -

0:10:15 > 0:10:19I've got a scar at the side of my head that'll prove that.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22My legs had basically been crushed

0:10:22 > 0:10:24from the impact of the accident.

0:10:26 > 0:10:29The guy that operated on me worked in Afghanistan

0:10:29 > 0:10:33and stuff like that. He said, "It's as though you've stepped on a bomb."

0:10:35 > 0:10:37I was that bad that I was dying.

0:10:38 > 0:10:42The fright in Daniel's eye when he came out of the coma was just...

0:10:42 > 0:10:43I still see it now.

0:10:44 > 0:10:47Um, he's just staring at me...

0:10:47 > 0:10:49Sorry, I'm getting a bit upset.

0:10:50 > 0:10:52Can you...?

0:10:52 > 0:10:54I can't speak, so...

0:10:59 > 0:11:02When I woke up, like, all my family were around me

0:11:02 > 0:11:04and I was like, "What has happened?"

0:11:04 > 0:11:06They were like, "Oh, you've lost your legs."

0:11:06 > 0:11:08I was like, "Bullshit," you know?

0:11:11 > 0:11:14It was kind of like a realisation that I am actually going to be

0:11:14 > 0:11:16disabled and I am actually going

0:11:16 > 0:11:19to have to rely on a wheelchair and other people in my life.

0:11:23 > 0:11:26Daniel getting a job, I think it'll bring him

0:11:26 > 0:11:28back to life, basically.

0:11:28 > 0:11:32He needs to get back into the working environment

0:11:32 > 0:11:35and he's not getting the chance.

0:11:48 > 0:11:53In London, it's the first day of Daniel and Kerie's group training.

0:11:54 > 0:11:57All right, chaps, shall we go through to the group room?

0:11:57 > 0:11:59Torture me. Put me in the red room.

0:12:01 > 0:12:04At 10am, Nancy kicks off the session

0:12:04 > 0:12:08with a vital lesson on how to get the attention of an employer.

0:12:08 > 0:12:10We are going to talk about cold calling

0:12:10 > 0:12:14and then we are going to do some cold calling.

0:12:14 > 0:12:17On average, you need 50 calls...

0:12:17 > 0:12:21equals one interview,

0:12:21 > 0:12:26and then three interviews equals one job.

0:12:26 > 0:12:30So you are looking at probably 150 calls.

0:12:30 > 0:12:31OK.

0:12:31 > 0:12:33CHUCKLING

0:12:33 > 0:12:35I know, I know, I know.

0:12:35 > 0:12:40Do you know, it is hideous, it is. BUT it is actually very effective.

0:12:40 > 0:12:42All right? Are we ready to go?

0:12:42 > 0:12:43- Yeah.- Whoo!- OK.

0:12:45 > 0:12:49For the next hour, the candidates practise contacting potential

0:12:49 > 0:12:52employers in front of each other.

0:12:52 > 0:12:55- Hang on.- Are you trying to find nine?- No, the speaker thing. Down here?

0:12:55 > 0:12:57- Yeah. - RINGING

0:12:57 > 0:13:00- ON PHONE:- How can I help you today? - My name is Kerie, I'm hoping you CAN help me.

0:13:03 > 0:13:07and I'm trying to do the same job as you do. So, I'm just wondering

0:13:07 > 0:13:10if you can point me to somebody I can speak to

0:13:10 > 0:13:13and explain, how do I do the same job as you do, etc,

0:13:13 > 0:13:16- and that's why I'm calling, really. - OK.

0:13:16 > 0:13:19- I may need to just pop you on hold for two wee seconds. - No, that's fine.

0:13:19 > 0:13:21- OK.- Thank you.

0:13:23 > 0:13:25- Oooh! - WHISTLES

0:13:25 > 0:13:27Hello, this is Kerie's sex line.

0:13:48 > 0:13:51Can we just clap Kerie, please?

0:13:51 > 0:13:53That's a good cold call.

0:13:53 > 0:13:56- A VERY good cold call. - Yes, very, very good.

0:13:56 > 0:13:58I mean, I would hire you. I'd think,

0:13:58 > 0:14:01"Wow, this is a really great person, I want her on the phone, she can

0:14:01 > 0:14:04"talk to my customers, this will bring me in more business."

0:14:04 > 0:14:06It's the face-to-face stuff I can't do so much.

0:14:06 > 0:14:08I want to lick your face.

0:14:11 > 0:14:14Let's go.

0:14:14 > 0:14:17Next-door, it's Daniel's turn to take to the phones.

0:14:22 > 0:14:27- Put some of that confidence in you. - What I would say if I was you

0:14:27 > 0:14:33is, "I'm Daniel, I've got experience in graphic design. I'm wondering

0:14:33 > 0:14:37"if it's possible to come and do a work trial with your company."

0:14:37 > 0:14:39Take one step at a time and do your phone call.

0:14:39 > 0:14:41RINGING

0:14:41 > 0:14:43- ON PHONE:- Good morning.

0:15:12 > 0:15:17with face-to-face interviews with industry recruitment experts.

0:15:19 > 0:15:21Daniel, you're up for your interview.

0:15:23 > 0:15:25- I need to go now?- Off you go.

0:15:36 > 0:15:38he's mock interviewing for a similar role.

0:15:40 > 0:15:44So I wondered if you could start by telling me about your past experience

0:15:44 > 0:15:47that makes you think you would be a good candidate for the position.

0:15:47 > 0:15:51I did, um, a graphic design course...

0:15:51 > 0:15:53Sorry, I didn't see that on your CV, the...

0:16:11 > 0:16:13- Nice to meet you.- Nice to meet you.

0:16:14 > 0:16:16How did it go, Daniel?

0:16:16 > 0:16:20- I feel relieved.- What was the role? - A junior graphic designer.

0:16:20 > 0:16:23That's something you have done before, isn't it?

0:16:23 > 0:16:27Yes. I did college for that, so it's not on my CV.

0:16:27 > 0:16:29So she asked me why is wasn't on my CV.

0:16:29 > 0:16:31- Good question.- I was like, "Because I failed it."

0:16:32 > 0:16:34I only failed because some of the buses

0:16:34 > 0:16:36were not wheelchair accessible.

0:16:36 > 0:16:38- Really?- So I couldn't get to class.

0:16:38 > 0:16:40And then they failed me for not being able to turn up

0:16:40 > 0:16:42- to assessments.- You're joking?- No.

0:16:45 > 0:16:48The purpose of bringing everyone together is to build confidence.

0:16:48 > 0:16:50Looking for work is isolating.

0:16:50 > 0:16:53So, what I'm hoping is that by bringing them all together,

0:16:53 > 0:16:55they can feed off each other, get a bit of feedback,

0:16:55 > 0:16:59and then they'll leave with the confidence that they need.

0:17:04 > 0:17:08If you have to pour it into them cups, right? I can't even do that

0:17:08 > 0:17:12- and I've got two hands. How do you do it without it falling over? - I just hold it in my elbow.

0:17:12 > 0:17:16- Huh?- Like this, like...- No way, get out!- Yeah, like that.

0:17:16 > 0:17:19- Get out!- Do you do that as well? - Yes.- Do you know what?

0:17:19 > 0:17:22We're learning from each other.

0:17:22 > 0:17:24As well as offering each other support,

0:17:24 > 0:17:29over two days, the group training continues with CV sessions,

0:17:29 > 0:17:32technology workshops and career guidance.

0:17:32 > 0:17:36Rather than "suffer from", how about "I have" cerebral palsy?

0:17:36 > 0:17:40That's amazing! Oh, my God, how do you do...?

0:17:40 > 0:17:44They respond electronically to muscle movements.

0:17:44 > 0:17:46- Right.- As you can see, I can spin it.

0:17:46 > 0:17:47Ooh!

0:17:47 > 0:17:49- This is a Bluetooth head mouse.- OK.

0:17:49 > 0:17:52- Using the click with your mouth. - Right.

0:17:56 > 0:18:00By the end of the second day, Nancy wants to see what effect bringing

0:18:00 > 0:18:03the group together is having on the job-seekers.

0:18:03 > 0:18:05What has worked well for you?

0:18:05 > 0:18:10I think, just seeing the struggles that other people have,

0:18:10 > 0:18:13cos sometimes you can get a bit, "Oh, my God, it's so difficult

0:18:13 > 0:18:16"and I don't have a job," and then all of a sudden,

0:18:16 > 0:18:19you are thrown together with all these other people

0:18:19 > 0:18:22and you kind of go, "Well, you know, I don't have it so bad."

0:18:22 > 0:18:23Ooh!

0:18:23 > 0:18:27So I hope it won't be long until I phone one of you guys

0:18:27 > 0:18:30and say, "I have a job."

0:18:30 > 0:18:32Yeah, yeah.

0:18:32 > 0:18:35Nancy will be keeping in touch with the candidates

0:18:35 > 0:18:38over the next two months, but before they leave to put their training

0:18:38 > 0:18:42into practice, she's got some final advice for them all.

0:18:43 > 0:18:46The most important thing is that we are working together.

0:18:46 > 0:18:50That there is some rapport and camaraderie

0:18:50 > 0:18:53and that we can get the most out of each other as well.

0:18:53 > 0:18:57And I just absolutely look forward to seeing what happens now

0:18:57 > 0:19:01that you are sailing out onto open seas with big wide horizons.

0:19:02 > 0:19:06I'm going to go home full of, like, new vigour and just put

0:19:06 > 0:19:11the techniques and different things I've learned into practice.

0:19:11 > 0:19:14These last two days have been like a real experience

0:19:14 > 0:19:20and have definitely ignited a fire and a spark to try and find a job.

0:19:20 > 0:19:23I view myself as more capable than ever now.

0:19:23 > 0:19:27I think there's some really good, strong options

0:19:27 > 0:19:28and opportunities for all of them.

0:19:28 > 0:19:30But they are going to have to persist.

0:19:30 > 0:19:32They're not going to be able to go home and sit

0:19:32 > 0:19:36and wait for those opportunities to come knocking on their door.

0:19:36 > 0:19:37The hard work does start now.

0:19:52 > 0:19:54Back at home in Stockport,

0:19:54 > 0:19:56Kerie's been putting what she learned

0:19:56 > 0:19:58at the training centre into practice.

0:19:59 > 0:20:01Today, I have a job interview.

0:20:01 > 0:20:04I found the job online, so I just applied

0:20:04 > 0:20:07and I was really, really surprised

0:20:07 > 0:20:09when they called to offer an interview,

0:20:09 > 0:20:11so, yeah, it's really good.

0:20:11 > 0:20:13This morning, Kerie will be interviewing

0:20:13 > 0:20:17for a customer service role at a communications company.

0:20:17 > 0:20:20Just hoping to make a first impression as somebody who

0:20:20 > 0:20:22actually would be an asset and could be an asset

0:20:22 > 0:20:26if only, you know, they can give me a chance.

0:20:31 > 0:20:33It's very sunny for Manchester.

0:20:33 > 0:20:36- It is, yeah, you're right. Are you ready now?- Yeah, thank you.

0:20:36 > 0:20:41Everything that I've worked to build up over the past two years,

0:20:41 > 0:20:47everything I moved here to leave behind is now under threat

0:20:47 > 0:20:49because I don't have a job.

0:20:49 > 0:20:51There are no words to describe how important it is that

0:20:51 > 0:20:54I find one really, really soon.

0:20:56 > 0:21:00- All right.- Are we OK now? - I'll just, yeah... Got you.

0:21:00 > 0:21:04- OK, the door's wide open for you now.- OK.- OK?- Yeah.

0:21:04 > 0:21:07- And I think this lady is going to take you.- Thank you.

0:21:07 > 0:21:10That's great, thanks a lot. Thank you. Hi.

0:21:10 > 0:21:13- There we go.- Thank you very much. Thank you.

0:21:13 > 0:21:16- So...- Sorry, where is it?

0:21:16 > 0:21:18Oh, there we go. OK, I see it now. Thank you very much. Sorry.

0:21:18 > 0:21:24So with regards to your experience, your previous job,

0:21:24 > 0:21:27why did you leave that position?

0:21:27 > 0:21:29Customers would ask quite visual questions

0:21:29 > 0:21:32that would be really difficult to answer,

0:21:32 > 0:21:35like, "Where is Seat 62C in relation to this?"

0:21:35 > 0:21:38And you're like, "I can't see the plane!

0:21:38 > 0:21:41"But I'll find you someone who can see the plane

0:21:41 > 0:21:42"if you wait one minute."

0:21:42 > 0:21:46Can you tell me a little bit about your visual impairment?

0:21:46 > 0:21:50- I mean, I've been this way always, so it's not a thing to me.- Yeah.

0:21:50 > 0:21:51- Yeah.- OK.

0:21:51 > 0:21:56But what I would say is, I'm 150 million percent,

0:21:56 > 0:21:58I just want to work and I want to learn.

0:21:58 > 0:22:01And I'll be... Eventually, it might take a bit of time,

0:22:01 > 0:22:03eventually, I would be an asset.

0:22:05 > 0:22:09I just need a chance, that's all I need, I just need a chance.

0:22:09 > 0:22:12And I know everyone comes in and says, "I really want this job,

0:22:12 > 0:22:15"and I really will work really hard and I'll do this

0:22:15 > 0:22:17"and I'll do this and I'll do this." But...

0:22:25 > 0:22:26Are you OK?

0:22:30 > 0:22:31I'll get you a tissue.

0:22:33 > 0:22:36- I've got some, it's fine, thanks. - Have you got some?- Yeah, sorry.

0:22:53 > 0:22:57- Are you all right?- Sorry.- That's OK.

0:22:59 > 0:23:03All I need is one person to see past the fact that I can't,

0:23:03 > 0:23:04and say, "You know what?

0:23:04 > 0:23:06"Maybe eventually she'll be the same

0:23:06 > 0:23:08"if not better than the sighted people behind her."

0:23:09 > 0:23:11You know?

0:23:11 > 0:23:15And that's, that's... I just want a chance, that's all,

0:23:15 > 0:23:16you know, that's all.

0:23:23 > 0:23:29It went pretty OK. Right up until... Until I kind of got a bit teary.

0:23:31 > 0:23:33I just want somebody to turn around and say,

0:23:33 > 0:23:36"We're going to offer you a position," and that's what I want now.

0:23:38 > 0:23:41I suppose the only thing I do to try and keep myself

0:23:41 > 0:23:43from kind of giving up altogether

0:23:43 > 0:23:47is just remember why I keep... Why I'm doing it, you know?

0:23:48 > 0:23:50And, you know, that's why I don't give up.

0:24:02 > 0:24:06Application complete. And then submit it.

0:24:06 > 0:24:08Which is right here.

0:24:08 > 0:24:11In Scotland, Daniel's determined to face

0:24:11 > 0:24:14the challenge of finding employment head-on.

0:24:14 > 0:24:19The training centre kind of lit a fire in me.

0:24:19 > 0:24:22I think I'm more positive about the job search now.

0:24:24 > 0:24:26When I met all them other people with disabilities,

0:24:26 > 0:24:30it was reassuring that I'm not the only one struggling for a job.

0:24:30 > 0:24:33So, it was nice to share that for once.

0:24:35 > 0:24:37As well as applying for jobs online,

0:24:37 > 0:24:42Daniel has managed to get some work experience at a local business

0:24:42 > 0:24:44in need of some graphics expertise.

0:24:51 > 0:24:54At the back of my mind, I'm always concerned with

0:24:54 > 0:24:55if I can get into the building

0:24:55 > 0:24:59and whether or not the employer can make reasonable adjustments.

0:25:04 > 0:25:06All the houses seem to have steps.

0:25:08 > 0:25:11I'm a little confused at how I'm going to get in here.

0:25:25 > 0:25:27I can't even knock on the door.

0:25:34 > 0:25:36What am I meant to do? I can't knock on the door.

0:25:39 > 0:25:40I'll see if I can reach.

0:25:44 > 0:25:46There we go.

0:25:49 > 0:25:52- DOOR OPENS - Hi, Adrian, how are you?

0:25:52 > 0:25:56Yeah, good, come on in, come on in. I'll get these set up for you.

0:26:00 > 0:26:04- You want help? Are you OK?- Perhaps a little bit?- Of course, of course.

0:26:04 > 0:26:07- Say when.- Perfect. - Ready?- Let's go.

0:26:08 > 0:26:10- Perfect.- Thank you.

0:26:10 > 0:26:13For Adrian to come out with a ramp, it was kind of like,

0:26:13 > 0:26:14"Oh, OK, you thought of that."

0:26:14 > 0:26:16Instead of me thinking,

0:26:16 > 0:26:19"Oh, no, I can't do that because it's got steps."

0:26:19 > 0:26:22Welcome to the office.

0:26:22 > 0:26:24- Are you all right?- Perfect.

0:26:24 > 0:26:26- Are you OK?- Yeah, I'm fine.

0:26:26 > 0:26:30It's kind of enlightening to just be treated like that.

0:26:33 > 0:26:38Daniel has been asked to redesign an advert for the company.

0:26:38 > 0:26:42- That's an old graphic. - Oh, wow, that's not you?- That is me!

0:26:43 > 0:26:46So, really, it's up to you for the graphics, text,

0:26:46 > 0:26:48where it's going to get placed.

0:26:48 > 0:26:49No pressure!

0:26:51 > 0:26:55We had a chat, just to see if you would be quite happy replacing me.

0:26:55 > 0:26:57I have no problem with that.

0:26:57 > 0:27:02For the first time since his accident interrupted his career,

0:27:02 > 0:27:04Daniel has the chance of a fresh start.

0:27:04 > 0:27:07Advertising poster.

0:27:07 > 0:27:08- There we go.- Perfect.

0:27:08 > 0:27:11It's our biggest advert that we do,

0:27:11 > 0:27:14a magazine that's read by over 1 million people.

0:27:14 > 0:27:17So we are putting a lot of faith and trust in Daniel.

0:27:17 > 0:27:20It is quite a lot of responsibility to be doing this advert.

0:27:20 > 0:27:24They trusted me with things that I didn't think they would be, so it means a lot.

0:27:24 > 0:27:26I think that's it.

0:27:28 > 0:27:33- That's ace!- Awesome.- That looks really good. I really like it.

0:27:34 > 0:27:37- Perfect, I'm delighted with it.- How are you feeling?- Yeah, I love it.

0:27:37 > 0:27:39Absolutely fantastic.

0:27:39 > 0:27:41I'm really impressed.

0:27:42 > 0:27:44Before I did this advert,

0:27:44 > 0:27:47just thought graphic design was totally out of the question.

0:27:47 > 0:27:49Now it is definitely an option.

0:27:49 > 0:27:51I'm actually falling in love with it again.

0:28:05 > 0:28:08It's a struggle. You get fed up, you know, really.

0:28:09 > 0:28:12You just have days where you go, "Oh, my God, this is never-ending,

0:28:12 > 0:28:15"this is never going to be...

0:28:15 > 0:28:18"I'm never going to have a time when this is ever going to be OK."

0:28:18 > 0:28:22Kerie's job search is still ongoing.

0:28:22 > 0:28:25Although she was offered a few days' work at the communications company,

0:28:25 > 0:28:28it didn't lead to a full-time position.

0:28:28 > 0:28:30At this point, I would work, you know,

0:28:30 > 0:28:33behind a counter in a coffee shop if I was able to.

0:28:33 > 0:28:36You still have to keep going because at the end of the day,

0:28:36 > 0:28:39it's about what you want at the end, you know?

0:28:39 > 0:28:43Which is a job and employment and all that that represents.

0:28:46 > 0:28:50To help Kerie keep her job search on track, Nancy has come to Stockport.

0:28:51 > 0:28:55- So, are you happy for us to go ahead with the testing?- Yeah.

0:28:55 > 0:28:57I'm going to say some numbers

0:28:57 > 0:28:59and I want you to repeat them to me backwards, OK.

0:28:59 > 0:29:05Five, six, four, six.

0:29:05 > 0:29:09Six, four, six, five.

0:29:09 > 0:29:13Nancy's assessing Kerie to discover what skills she has

0:29:13 > 0:29:16to help her sell herself to potential employers.

0:29:16 > 0:29:18- I'm going to read you a long list of words.- OK.

0:29:18 > 0:29:22What I'd like you to do is say them back to me with the animals first

0:29:22 > 0:29:27in size order, and then the other items in size order.

0:29:27 > 0:29:32Window, watch, cat,

0:29:32 > 0:29:37spider, rhino, boat.

0:29:39 > 0:29:43Spider, cat, rhino,

0:29:43 > 0:29:47watch, window, boat.

0:29:47 > 0:29:52Whoo! I'd like to high-five you, Kerie. That was amazing.

0:29:52 > 0:29:56Never mind, you did really well. Your memory is way above average.

0:29:56 > 0:29:58- What? Above average? - Way above average.

0:29:58 > 0:30:01- Me? Me, above average? - Yes, actually you, yes.

0:30:01 > 0:30:04Wow! I've never been described as above average in anything!

0:30:04 > 0:30:07- That's so awesome. - Well, your memory is above average.

0:30:07 > 0:30:11When you're looking for work, you really need to bear in mind that

0:30:11 > 0:30:15you are very talented when it comes to processing verbal information.

0:30:15 > 0:30:17That's, you know, pure talent.

0:30:19 > 0:30:24It's just unbelievable. It's unbelievable. I'm just, like, "What?"

0:30:24 > 0:30:25Oh, my God!

0:30:25 > 0:30:28Because I've had so much difficulty in finding a job

0:30:28 > 0:30:32and finding an employer who can sort of see my abilities,

0:30:32 > 0:30:35it just makes you feel like, well, maybe there's something I can do.

0:30:35 > 0:30:39So, yeah, it's definitely given me a new get-up-and-go, if you want.

0:30:41 > 0:30:45Kerie was very surprised to hear that her scores were so high

0:30:45 > 0:30:47and I think partially because

0:30:47 > 0:30:50she just hasn't ever lived up to her potential so far.

0:30:50 > 0:30:55She's got a really strong mind and a really competent brain,

0:30:55 > 0:30:57and she needs to be out there working.

0:31:02 > 0:31:04- Hiya, how can I help?- Oh, hi, how are you? I'm hoping you can.

0:31:04 > 0:31:09I have seen the specialist jobs advertised on the website.

0:31:09 > 0:31:11I'm just wondering, is there anybody specific

0:31:11 > 0:31:15that I can give my CV to at the store?

0:31:15 > 0:31:18Armed with her new-found self-belief,

0:31:18 > 0:31:20Kerie's been spurred on in her search for work.

0:31:21 > 0:31:24I'll just keep looking and just hope ultimately

0:31:24 > 0:31:25that something will come up

0:31:25 > 0:31:30and it will just all be, you know, steps forward from here.

0:31:30 > 0:31:32All right, you've been really helpful, thank you very much.

0:31:32 > 0:31:35- All right, bye-bye. - Have a nice day, bye-bye.

0:31:50 > 0:31:53"Unfortunately, we do not have any vacancies available right now,

0:31:53 > 0:31:57"but our eyes are nearly always open for talented and creative people

0:31:57 > 0:32:00"who are looking to take the next step in their career."

0:32:00 > 0:32:03For Daniel, things aren't going as well as he'd hoped.

0:32:05 > 0:32:08Being in a wheelchair and trying to look for a job in such a small town,

0:32:08 > 0:32:12that's accessible and that I'm going to thrive in,

0:32:12 > 0:32:14is quite difficult.

0:32:15 > 0:32:20Despite bolstering his CV with recent work experience,

0:32:20 > 0:32:22finding a paid job is proving a challenge.

0:32:24 > 0:32:25Daniel needs to work,

0:32:25 > 0:32:29but he's not having any luck on the job front at all.

0:32:29 > 0:32:34I just want to be given the chance to get back into graphic design

0:32:34 > 0:32:37and be like, Monday to Friday or even, Monday to Sunday,

0:32:37 > 0:32:39just be constantly working.

0:32:39 > 0:32:43He loves interaction and he needs to be in amongst people,

0:32:43 > 0:32:46so it would mean a lot to him to get a job.

0:32:50 > 0:32:51Before his accident,

0:32:51 > 0:32:54Daniel's life was clearly laid out in front of him.

0:32:56 > 0:33:00I am looking at a video from 2011,

0:33:00 > 0:33:04of Peterhead rugby team,

0:33:04 > 0:33:05which I was part of.

0:33:05 > 0:33:11It's weird, looking at me, I was so tall!

0:33:11 > 0:33:14That's me in the back, with the blue socks, running,

0:33:14 > 0:33:16with the ginger hair.

0:33:16 > 0:33:18- ON VIDEO:- Go on!- Go on!

0:33:24 > 0:33:29There has never been a day that I don't think about my accident

0:33:29 > 0:33:32and I don't think about, oh, well, what if?

0:33:34 > 0:33:37There is a difference being born with a disability

0:33:37 > 0:33:40because you don't know any better,

0:33:40 > 0:33:44but having 21 years of being able to walk

0:33:44 > 0:33:49and then having that taken away from you, it's just horrible.

0:33:49 > 0:33:54I get days where I do wish I had my legs back,

0:33:54 > 0:33:57and being in a wheelchair is, it is a burden.

0:33:57 > 0:33:59But it's my burden.

0:34:08 > 0:34:12Eight weeks after the first group training session,

0:34:12 > 0:34:13Kerie is back in London.

0:34:18 > 0:34:21Despite her high hopes of finding employment,

0:34:21 > 0:34:23she's yet to receive any job offers.

0:34:28 > 0:34:32- Hi, Kerie.- Hi!- How are you?- How are you?- Good.- Nice to see you again.

0:34:32 > 0:34:36- Yeah, you too. Shall I take you over to the seats?- Yeah, thank you.

0:34:37 > 0:34:41- I see you're a cane user?- Yes. - I'm a dog user.

0:34:41 > 0:34:43Oh, right, OK.

0:34:43 > 0:34:47- I didn't catch your name.- Kerie is my name.- Kerie, I'm Marv.- Hiya.

0:34:47 > 0:34:49- Nice to meet you.- Yeah, you too.

0:34:49 > 0:34:51Are you a retriever?

0:34:51 > 0:34:53- How are you, Kerie?- I'm not so bad.

0:34:53 > 0:34:55Right, do you want to come and have a chat with me?

0:34:55 > 0:34:58- I'm in the first room. - Right.- So the table's in your way.

0:34:58 > 0:35:00That's all right, I'll take a wing

0:35:00 > 0:35:02and we shall do Strictly Come Dancing and we'll be fine.

0:35:02 > 0:35:03Let's do it that way.

0:35:03 > 0:35:06What kind of interview experiences have you had?

0:35:06 > 0:35:09I had quite an emotional one.

0:35:09 > 0:35:12It was going fine and they were being really nice and things,

0:35:12 > 0:35:16and then I think they asked something really simple and fine,

0:35:16 > 0:35:20like, "Why should we hire you?" Or something, I can't remember.

0:35:20 > 0:35:23And then, I don't know, it was like Watergate kind of thing

0:35:23 > 0:35:26and I got a bit emotional.

0:35:26 > 0:35:30Well, I think maybe a useful thing for us to think about

0:35:30 > 0:35:31is how you answer those questions

0:35:31 > 0:35:34so that you feel really confident about it.

0:35:34 > 0:35:37- Mm-hm.- So, we've got other people that have got experience

0:35:37 > 0:35:40that is exactly what we're looking for, Kerie,

0:35:40 > 0:35:43- why should we hire you? Come on! - SHE LAUGHS

0:35:44 > 0:35:46- I can't!- Yes, you can.

0:35:48 > 0:35:51I think my experience is relevant to the role

0:35:51 > 0:35:54because not only have I got customer service experience,

0:35:54 > 0:35:56I also have training experience.

0:35:56 > 0:36:00And I also have a really good memory,

0:36:00 > 0:36:04so anything I learn, I'll be able to absolutely explain it 100%,

0:36:04 > 0:36:08because I remember things really, really, really, really well.

0:36:08 > 0:36:11Your head was face down,

0:36:11 > 0:36:14and even though lots of what you said was good,

0:36:14 > 0:36:17the tone of your voice didn't vary

0:36:17 > 0:36:20and that made it seem very flat and over-rehearsed.

0:36:20 > 0:36:23So I want you to answer that question again and this time,

0:36:23 > 0:36:26I want you to tell me that your memory is in the top 1% of the population...

0:36:26 > 0:36:29- I can't!- Not that it's really good. - I can't do that!- Yes, you can.

0:36:29 > 0:36:33- No, I can't do that.- Yes, you can. In an interview you've got to.

0:36:33 > 0:36:36That's the point. Let's hear it again. Breathe.

0:36:42 > 0:36:44I think I should have this job

0:36:44 > 0:36:49because I can help customers like myself who have visual impairments.

0:36:49 > 0:36:52As well as that, I can remember things,

0:36:52 > 0:36:56I have a memory that is in the top 1% of the population.

0:36:56 > 0:37:01And I know that I can put across how enthusiastic I am

0:37:01 > 0:37:04about the products and make them feel the same way

0:37:04 > 0:37:07before they leave the shop, so they want to come back.

0:37:07 > 0:37:10- Now you're getting hired! - THEY LAUGH

0:37:10 > 0:37:13See, now I believe you when you tell me that you're enthusiastic.

0:37:13 > 0:37:15If you're going to say "I'm enthusiastic,"

0:37:15 > 0:37:17you've got to sound enthusiastic.

0:37:17 > 0:37:19And you've got to look enthusiastic

0:37:19 > 0:37:21and you've got to do that infectious laugh.

0:37:21 > 0:37:24And you were doing all of those things, that was amazing.

0:37:25 > 0:37:27Kerie's an incredibly bright woman

0:37:27 > 0:37:29and she's so keen to get back into the workplace.

0:37:29 > 0:37:33Anything that is an opportunity, she will take it.

0:37:33 > 0:37:37I hope that what we talked about gave her a little strategy

0:37:37 > 0:37:41of just doing something to just settle her state

0:37:41 > 0:37:43and practise those answers,

0:37:43 > 0:37:47so she can just get through that, because I think if she can,

0:37:47 > 0:37:51that's where, hopefully, we'll get the result that we want for Kerie.

0:37:53 > 0:37:57Thank you. It's nice to come here and sort of talk it out, you know?

0:37:57 > 0:38:00It helps, it helps a lot.

0:38:00 > 0:38:04I do really feel very positive, empowered

0:38:04 > 0:38:09and just ready now to go on and take the next step, whatever that is.

0:38:17 > 0:38:19Despite being unable to attend

0:38:19 > 0:38:21the last session of Nancy's training centre,

0:38:21 > 0:38:25Daniel is determined not to lose touch with the group.

0:38:26 > 0:38:27- Hello?- Hi!

0:38:27 > 0:38:30- How are you?- I'm good, thanks.

0:38:30 > 0:38:33I've been telling my friends how amazing you are.

0:38:33 > 0:38:38Whilst on the course in London, he struck up a friendship

0:38:38 > 0:38:42with 44-year-old Julie who has cerebral palsy.

0:38:42 > 0:38:44They have been keeping touch ever since.

0:38:44 > 0:38:47- So, you have a job now?- I do.

0:38:47 > 0:38:50I wanted to be the lion tamer but they said,

0:38:50 > 0:38:52"We don't do that training."

0:38:52 > 0:38:54But I work in Dinosaur World.

0:38:54 > 0:38:59I basically serve the customers, and just be polite and happy.

0:38:59 > 0:39:02That would suit me ideally, I love dinosaurs.

0:39:02 > 0:39:03They've been really supportive.

0:39:03 > 0:39:06I tell them what I can't do, what I can do,

0:39:06 > 0:39:07and they just compromise around me.

0:39:07 > 0:39:10That's nice, that's good that you've got a job.

0:39:10 > 0:39:12I'm just rooting for you 100%.

0:39:12 > 0:39:16I know you can do it. Just be open and honest.

0:39:16 > 0:39:18Yeah, that's all I can be.

0:39:18 > 0:39:23And bring that personality out, that amazing personality.

0:39:23 > 0:39:26And trust me, you're going to go far in life.

0:39:26 > 0:39:28Oh, thank you, honey.

0:39:28 > 0:39:31- Julie, I'm going to let you go now. - OK.

0:39:31 > 0:39:33And I hope you have a wonderful time at work.

0:39:33 > 0:39:35- All right, love you!- Bye!

0:39:35 > 0:39:37- Love you too, see you later! Bye, Julie!- Bye!

0:39:39 > 0:39:42Speaking to Julie has given me extra confidence,

0:39:42 > 0:39:44and I've kind of got some pointers from her.

0:39:44 > 0:39:46I know that she goes through

0:39:46 > 0:39:48some of the same things that I go through,

0:39:48 > 0:39:51so it's really inspirational

0:39:51 > 0:39:54when people like Julie say things like that.

0:39:54 > 0:39:57So I'm really grateful for having Julie as a friend.

0:40:09 > 0:40:13Today, I have got an interview for...

0:40:15 > 0:40:19..a kind of, sort of, maybe, possible job thing.

0:41:01 > 0:41:03- Oh, yeah, absolutely. Like, it's no bother.- OK.

0:41:03 > 0:41:06You've got great customer service skills

0:41:06 > 0:41:08from what I can see from your previous experience.

0:41:08 > 0:41:13Um...what would you say are your main strengths?

0:41:13 > 0:41:16I really just enjoy talking to people, really.

0:41:16 > 0:41:20I'm Irish, I'd talk the hind legs off a donkey sort of thing, you know.

0:41:25 > 0:41:30- OK.- So, what are your, um...short-term goals?

0:41:30 > 0:41:35My short-term goals, really, are to find a job

0:41:35 > 0:41:39and just learn everything I can about where I am,

0:41:39 > 0:41:41and settle in and be an asset

0:41:41 > 0:41:43and normally, after this bit,

0:41:43 > 0:41:46it's normally kind of the most you ever get, kind of thing.

0:41:46 > 0:41:48But I don't want to sound too, er...

0:41:48 > 0:41:50- KERIE LAUGHS - ..you know, ambitious or whatever.

0:44:23 > 0:44:26Him talking about his disabilities was...

0:44:26 > 0:44:29It took me back a little bit, to be perfectly frank.

0:44:29 > 0:44:32It was quite surprising that he felt the need to cover that so quickly.

0:44:32 > 0:44:37The truth is, he doesn't need his legs to be a graphics designer.

0:44:37 > 0:44:40The real test will be the next couple of days.

0:46:33 > 0:46:35Phone manner is the most important thing.

0:46:35 > 0:46:37It's one of the main ways that we speak to our clients,

0:46:37 > 0:46:39which is why you've got to be on your toes,

0:46:39 > 0:46:41always thinking of what you're going to say next,

0:46:41 > 0:46:43but also taking in... It's a lot of multi-tasking.

0:46:43 > 0:46:47That's right, yeah. Yeah, for every pound you spend,

0:46:47 > 0:46:50you get, um... For every pound you spend,

0:46:50 > 0:46:53you get half a Keys credit, yeah. That's right.

0:46:53 > 0:46:55Obviously, I did have to kind of dive in at the deep end

0:46:55 > 0:46:57and sort of do some calls and stuff like that.

0:46:57 > 0:47:00And I found that a little bit nerve-racking,

0:47:32 > 0:47:35They're real clients, so, really, if he's done his research

0:47:35 > 0:47:36and he listens in the meeting,

0:47:36 > 0:47:39it should be a fantastic opportunity to produce some work

0:47:39 > 0:47:42that will be out there and that people will see.

0:47:42 > 0:47:45- It's going to be hard to impress these guys.- Yeah.

0:47:45 > 0:47:47They know their business better than anybody.

0:47:47 > 0:47:51So you're going to have to come up with something, present it back to them,

0:47:51 > 0:47:55and before you do that, understand all the things they're saying.

0:47:58 > 0:48:01Daniel's been asked to redesign a logo

0:48:01 > 0:48:04for a shipping company's 30th anniversary.

0:48:04 > 0:48:08He's got just two days to impress the client and his boss.

0:48:08 > 0:48:12I was quite surprised that Daniel was wearing shorts and a T-shirt

0:48:12 > 0:48:14and that his limbs were on show.

0:48:14 > 0:48:18I would have expected him to be a little bit smarter

0:48:18 > 0:48:20for that kind of meeting.

0:48:20 > 0:48:24Maybe that was an intentional step from Daniel to get it out in the open

0:48:24 > 0:48:26without having to talk about it, I don't know.

0:48:26 > 0:48:29But, er...he has to put his work first,

0:48:29 > 0:48:31before his disability,

0:48:31 > 0:48:35because that's what's going to make him a great graphics designer.

0:48:36 > 0:48:39This is extreme pressure to get the job done in time.

0:48:41 > 0:48:43I don't want to let it get to me.

0:48:45 > 0:48:48Do you want to talk me through the process for this and how you got that?

0:48:48 > 0:48:53I just decided to do a gold anchor because gold means a celebration.

0:48:53 > 0:48:55- I don't think it will work for the client.- Yeah.

0:48:55 > 0:48:59I think the client traditionally is quite corporate.

0:48:59 > 0:49:03It maybe is bordering on being cartoony for them.

0:49:03 > 0:49:05- Yeah.- That would be my fear.

0:49:09 > 0:49:13This is definitely a lot harder than I thought it was going to be.

0:49:13 > 0:49:15I am a little bit out of my depth

0:49:15 > 0:49:18and the ideas that I did have just didn't work.

0:49:19 > 0:49:23The question I've got to ask myself is, is Daniel up to the job?

0:49:23 > 0:49:26Is he the best possible option that we can take into this business?

0:49:26 > 0:49:29It's not about how he performs in the meeting,

0:49:29 > 0:49:32it's not about how he moves himself around the office,

0:49:32 > 0:49:37it's about what he actually creates design-wise, that will be the test.

0:49:38 > 0:49:41Tomorrow is a really important day to prove myself

0:49:41 > 0:49:44and show them that Daniel is not just a guy in a wheelchair,

0:49:44 > 0:49:46he can actually work.

0:49:46 > 0:49:48If not, then I won't get the job.

0:49:53 > 0:49:55I've just had a call from one of our clients.

0:49:55 > 0:49:57We're going to do a team-building party.

0:49:57 > 0:50:01- We've got a deadline of 1.30 to give them the options.- OK.

0:50:01 > 0:50:02- Brilliant.- Massive.

0:50:02 > 0:50:05It's the second day of Kerie's work trial.

0:50:05 > 0:50:07She's been given the task of organising

0:50:07 > 0:50:10an event for an important client.

0:50:10 > 0:50:14We want to find some fun activities for them to do.

0:50:14 > 0:50:16So it needs to be kind of...

0:50:16 > 0:50:18- Outdoorsy.- Outdoorsy, yeah.

0:50:18 > 0:50:20- Like, paintballing.- Rock climbing.

0:50:20 > 0:50:25How would you, if you wanted to do that, go about finding that?

0:50:25 > 0:50:27- They're based in Leeds.- Mm-hm.

0:50:27 > 0:50:30- So we'll just see what they can do around that sort of thing.- Yeah.

0:50:30 > 0:50:32I want her to be resourceful.

0:50:32 > 0:50:35She's got a couple of hours to do it, so it's like a no-time-wasted moment.

0:50:35 > 0:50:36OK, so...

0:50:36 > 0:50:38KERIE DIALS OUT

0:50:40 > 0:50:42Hello. Who am I speaking to?

0:50:42 > 0:50:44Oh, hi. Is this...? Did you say Matt?

0:50:44 > 0:50:45CLICK!

0:50:45 > 0:50:47Oh, he's just hung up. Thank you.

0:50:48 > 0:50:50- That's who you don't want to go to. - THEY LAUGH

0:50:50 > 0:50:52KERIE DIALS OUT

0:50:52 > 0:50:56Oh, hi, Steve. My name is Kerie and I'm calling from Keys Concierge.

0:50:56 > 0:50:58How are you this morning? Are you OK?

0:50:58 > 0:50:59Oh, good, good.

0:50:59 > 0:51:05A team of seven, they've contacted us, looking for us to sort out an event for them.

0:51:06 > 0:51:09If you could give me, like, a brief outline with some prices

0:51:09 > 0:51:12of what we might be able to do, that would be really, really helpful.

0:51:14 > 0:51:16Oh, that's what they wanted. That's awesome.

0:51:16 > 0:51:20Oh, you've been so helpful. Thank you so much. Thanks. Bye-bye.

0:51:20 > 0:51:23Having sourced a team-building event before the deadline,

0:51:23 > 0:51:27Kerie now has to sell her idea to the client.

0:51:27 > 0:51:29Hi, James, it's Kerie here.

0:51:29 > 0:51:31Yeah, hi, how are you? You OK?

0:51:31 > 0:51:33Good, good. Not bad, not bad.

0:51:33 > 0:51:36How is your train journey going?

0:51:37 > 0:51:39- Oh, dear. - KERIE LAUGHS

0:51:39 > 0:51:41Yeah.

0:51:41 > 0:51:43- KERIE LAUGHS - Absolutely.

0:51:43 > 0:51:46Well, I've found, um...this thing that looks really, really good.

0:51:46 > 0:51:48It's, like, paragliding.

0:51:48 > 0:51:50Would that be something that you might be interested in?

0:51:50 > 0:51:55Awesome. OK. So we'll figure it all out for you.

0:51:55 > 0:51:56All right, enjoy the rest of your day.

0:51:56 > 0:51:58Thanks a lot for taking the call.

0:51:58 > 0:52:01All right. Bye. Bye-bye. Bye-bye.

0:52:02 > 0:52:05Brilliant. Really well done. I'm really impressed.

0:52:05 > 0:52:06- Don't be.- You did really well.

0:52:06 > 0:52:09- KERIE LAUGHS - He was happy with it, wasn't he?

0:52:09 > 0:52:12Maybe I didn't make a total shambles of it

0:52:12 > 0:52:15and they might think that I didn't do such a bad job

0:52:15 > 0:52:16and it might be all right, so...

0:52:16 > 0:52:19But that remains to be seen, I suppose.

0:52:19 > 0:52:20SHE LAUGHS

0:52:27 > 0:52:29Having failed to impress on his first day,

0:52:29 > 0:52:33it's Daniel's last chance to prove he's right for the job.

0:52:35 > 0:52:38I'm finding everything a lot easier today than I was yesterday.

0:52:38 > 0:52:45I'm just trying to do the best that I can with everything.

0:52:45 > 0:52:47Daniel might be feeling more confident,

0:52:47 > 0:52:49but it's his boss who will decide

0:52:49 > 0:52:52whether he's got what it takes to be a graphic designer.

0:52:52 > 0:52:55- In you come, Daniel, we'll have a chat.- OK. Thank you.

0:52:55 > 0:52:57I'll just shut this.

0:53:01 > 0:53:04Let me see what it is that you've designed.

0:53:04 > 0:53:07This is what I did initially. So you can see, like,

0:53:07 > 0:53:09- it went from this to this. - Huge difference.

0:53:15 > 0:53:16I really like that, Daniel.

0:53:16 > 0:53:20I can see that as a full-sized advertisement somewhere, you know,

0:53:20 > 0:53:22it's really impressive.

0:53:22 > 0:53:24I'm really looking forward to presenting this to the client.

0:53:24 > 0:53:28- I think they'll be really impressed. - Thank you.

0:53:28 > 0:53:32So, the million-dollar question, where do we go from here?

0:53:32 > 0:53:34Yes.

0:53:34 > 0:53:36You're not yet at the standard

0:53:36 > 0:53:40that we would, um...require for a graphic designer.

0:53:40 > 0:53:43However, there's some real potential here.

0:53:43 > 0:53:46There are sparks of brilliance in what you've done.

0:53:48 > 0:53:52- So what I want to do is, I want to offer you a mentor programme.- OK.

0:53:52 > 0:53:56Where we can help you learn the skills required

0:53:56 > 0:53:59to get to an entry-level graphics designer.

0:53:59 > 0:54:02So that you have a portfolio which will allow you

0:54:02 > 0:54:05to potentially work here in the future,

0:54:05 > 0:54:08or anywhere else, for that matter, as a graphics designer.

0:54:10 > 0:54:13Hopefully you'll take us up on that offer.

0:54:13 > 0:54:15Definitely. When do I start?

0:54:15 > 0:54:17- THEY LAUGH - We can have a chat about that.- Yeah.

0:54:22 > 0:54:26Being here for these past couple of days has just reignited something I thought I had lost.

0:54:26 > 0:54:30- Is that right?- Yeah. It's been awesome to be a part of it.

0:54:30 > 0:54:33- Thank you very much.- Great. Well, thank you very much.- Thank you.

0:54:35 > 0:54:37I feel ecstatic.

0:54:37 > 0:54:40I mean, that somebody has that little bit of faith in me.

0:54:40 > 0:54:43So I'm grateful for this opportunity.

0:54:43 > 0:54:46My disability didn't really come into any of the considerations.

0:54:46 > 0:54:48And they accommodated me perfectly.

0:54:48 > 0:54:52Daniel's limitations will only be set by his mind, nothing else.

0:54:54 > 0:54:57And I think that he really has grasped the fact that

0:54:57 > 0:55:00he has to leave his wheelchair at the door,

0:55:00 > 0:55:03because it has no relevance to the position he's looking to fill.

0:55:04 > 0:55:09And I think Daniel really wants an opportunity in life,

0:55:09 > 0:55:12and wants a career, and hopefully, this might be his future.

0:55:14 > 0:55:15It means everything to me

0:55:15 > 0:55:18because there are employers out there

0:55:18 > 0:55:21that are willing to give you the chance.

0:55:21 > 0:55:23I've definitely changed my perception of myself.

0:55:23 > 0:55:26I'm not just Daniel in a wheelchair,

0:55:26 > 0:55:28I'm Daniel the graphic designer.

0:55:36 > 0:55:41For Kerie, her two-day job trial has come to an end.

0:55:41 > 0:55:43- So we've really enjoyed having you here.- Yeah.

0:55:43 > 0:55:46Your phone mannerism was fantastic.

0:55:46 > 0:55:49Your research today was really, really good.

0:55:51 > 0:55:56One of the things I think you could improve on is your confidence.

0:55:58 > 0:56:01I feel that you bring yourself down a lot

0:56:01 > 0:56:04and you need to be confident in your own abilities

0:56:04 > 0:56:07and, you know, not say, "Oh, this is so rubbish,"

0:56:07 > 0:56:10when actually, you've done a fantastic job.

0:56:10 > 0:56:14So, how do you feel about coming to work here full-time?

0:56:14 > 0:56:17Is that something that you're looking to do?

0:56:17 > 0:56:19- I mean... - KERIE LAUGHS

0:56:19 > 0:56:22Yeah. If that was, like... If that was...

0:56:22 > 0:56:24That would be awesome, if that was, like...

0:56:24 > 0:56:28If that is something that is...is there, that would be amazing.

0:56:28 > 0:56:34We have been speaking and we'd like to offer you a full-time position.

0:56:34 > 0:56:36Oh, my God! Huh!

0:56:36 > 0:56:39Oh, my God! Oh, my God!

0:56:39 > 0:56:41Awesome! Oh, my God! Oh, my God!

0:56:41 > 0:56:45- Oh, brilliant. - That's amazing! That's awesome!

0:56:45 > 0:56:47Is that a yes, then?

0:56:47 > 0:56:49- THEY LAUGH - Don't keep me in suspense like that.

0:56:49 > 0:56:51No, definitely! Absolutely! Yes, yes, yes!

0:56:51 > 0:56:54Oh, brilliant. Well, welcome aboard, then!

0:56:56 > 0:56:58I 100% think that she can do this job.

0:56:58 > 0:57:00She wants to work and it's a shame

0:57:00 > 0:57:02that no-one's given her an opportunity to do so.

0:57:02 > 0:57:05Just because, you know, she's visually impaired,

0:57:05 > 0:57:08there's nothing that we can do that she can't.

0:57:08 > 0:57:11I have to tell you something! I have to tell you something!

0:57:11 > 0:57:14We got a job, sweetheart!

0:57:14 > 0:57:17Really, incredibly humbled and amazed

0:57:17 > 0:57:19that somebody has done

0:57:19 > 0:57:22what I've been waiting 12 months for somebody to do, basically,

0:57:22 > 0:57:25which is look past the fact that I can't see.

0:57:26 > 0:57:28It just means everything, it really does.

0:57:28 > 0:57:31I feel like I've been accepted.

0:57:32 > 0:57:35I had so many times when I thought, "Am I going to have to give up?

0:57:35 > 0:57:37"Am I going to have to go home? Am I going to have to admit I failed?

0:57:37 > 0:57:40"Am I going to have to go back to Ireland and just, you know,

0:57:40 > 0:57:43"say it didn't work out?" And now that's not going to happen.

0:57:44 > 0:57:46Are you employable, Kerie?

0:57:46 > 0:57:48KERIE LAUGHS

0:57:48 > 0:57:50I am now!

0:57:50 > 0:57:52SHE LAUGHS

0:57:52 > 0:57:53I am now.

0:57:56 > 0:58:00I want to pull my weight for society.

0:58:00 > 0:58:03Other people see me as less intelligent

0:58:03 > 0:58:05because they don't understand autism.

0:58:08 > 0:58:11If I see something I'm not expecting, I can have a meltdown.

0:58:11 > 0:58:15I feel hopeless. My skills are being wasted.

0:58:15 > 0:58:18Being autistic, we see things differently.

0:58:18 > 0:58:20It's not we see things wrongly.
