0:00:03 > 0:00:07One of the things I love about us Brits is our spirit of generosity.
0:00:07 > 0:00:09If I can give back to somebody who had
0:00:09 > 0:00:12a similar struggle to my own, then that's what I'd like to do.
0:00:12 > 0:00:16Last year, nearly three quarters of us gave to charity.
0:00:16 > 0:00:20But what if you had the chance to go back and relive moments

0:01:15 > 0:01:16it really is.
0:01:16 > 0:01:18This is Going Back Giving Back.
0:01:30 > 0:01:32Today, we're going back to the late 1940s
0:01:32 > 0:01:35to hear a tale of unbelievable success.
0:01:36 > 0:01:39A story of how one man escaped conflict and poverty
0:01:39 > 0:01:42and, against all the odds, turned his life around.
0:01:43 > 0:01:47How did a man from India without a penny to his name become
0:01:47 > 0:01:50one of Britain's most successful businessmen?
0:01:50 > 0:01:53I started with just £2 capital,
0:01:53 > 0:01:57a typewriter, and somebody had given me their second-hand desk.
0:01:57 > 0:02:01What is motivating him to want to give back to someone
0:02:01 > 0:02:03who needs a leg up today?
0:02:03 > 0:02:06I start my journey from a refugee camp

0:02:15 > 0:02:18I'm concentrating on what I'm doing and I find it hard sometimes
0:02:18 > 0:02:23to do that when the kids are around and they're making so much noise.
0:02:23 > 0:02:27And there's an air of excitement as we prepare for the big moment...
0:02:27 > 0:02:29So, how are you feeling?
0:02:29 > 0:02:30Oh, well, I'm really excited,
0:02:30 > 0:02:34looking forward to meeting her, and to...trying to surprise her.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41- Thank you very much, I'm so happy.- Yes. Thank you...
0:02:41 > 0:02:44CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Give them a round of applause, yeah.
0:02:47 > 0:02:48BIRDS TWEET
0:02:53 > 0:02:55Today, I'm meeting an exceptional man who started life
0:02:55 > 0:02:57in a refugee camp and is living proof
0:02:57 > 0:03:00that you should never give up on your dreams.
0:03:00 > 0:03:03When he arrived in the UK in the early '70s,
0:03:03 > 0:03:05he literally had nothing,
0:03:05 > 0:03:07but his entrepreneurial spirits took over
0:03:07 > 0:03:12and 45 years later he now runs several successful businesses.
0:03:12 > 0:03:15What's more, he's collected quite a few accolades over the years,
0:03:15 > 0:03:17even a couple from Her Majesty the Queen.
0:03:17 > 0:03:19I'm looking forward to meeting him.
0:03:19 > 0:03:22On the outskirts of Middlesex lives 69-year-old family man
0:03:22 > 0:03:24Dr Rami Ranger, CBE.
0:03:24 > 0:03:29He's married, with three grown-up children and four grandchildren.
0:03:30 > 0:03:34- Hello.- How are you?- How are you? - Very well. Very- nice to see you. - Welcome, welcome.
0:03:34 > 0:03:38Rami started his first business in a shed with just £2,
0:03:38 > 0:03:40a typewriter and a borrowed desk.
0:03:40 > 0:03:42Today, nearly 30 years later,
0:03:42 > 0:03:46he owns two multi-million-pound companies.
0:03:48 > 0:03:51Thank you so much for inviting me into your lovely home.
0:03:51 > 0:03:52You're very welcome.
0:03:52 > 0:03:55So, go on, tell me, what's motivating you to want
0:03:55 > 0:03:57- to give something back today? - Very simple.
0:03:57 > 0:03:59You know, I have a very humble background,
0:03:59 > 0:04:02I start my journey from a refugee camp and I was given
0:04:02 > 0:04:07a lot of help by good people, and because of their generosity
0:04:07 > 0:04:09and their help, I am where I am today.
0:04:11 > 0:04:14And where Rami is today is a far cry from his tough start
0:04:14 > 0:04:16in life in a refugee camp in India.
0:04:18 > 0:04:20But in 1971, aged 23,
0:04:20 > 0:04:24Rami came to Britain to make a new life for himself.
0:04:24 > 0:04:27He arrived here with great expectations.
0:04:27 > 0:04:30Because I had that perception that Britain,
0:04:30 > 0:04:33you know, is a fantastic rich country,
0:04:33 > 0:04:36roads are paved with gold, money grows on trees,
0:04:36 > 0:04:39it would be just one beautiful life.
0:04:39 > 0:04:42But he soon discovered the reality.
0:04:44 > 0:04:47- And what happened when you got here? - Oh, it was a cultural shock.
0:04:47 > 0:04:52I had no idea how hard you have to work just to make end meet.
0:04:52 > 0:04:54Rami quickly realised life in Britain
0:04:54 > 0:04:59wasn't the stuff of his dreams and finding work was a challenge.
0:04:59 > 0:05:02Wherever I went people said, "Do you have experience?"
0:05:02 > 0:05:04I had no experience.
0:05:04 > 0:05:08And then eventually, I got a job as a car cleaner.
0:05:08 > 0:05:11Then, one fine morning, I was walking home
0:05:11 > 0:05:15and I saw one fast food chain, there was a board...
0:05:15 > 0:05:18"Chef required, no experience required."
0:05:18 > 0:05:23So I said, at least if I get a job here, I'll work indoors, in warmth.
0:05:23 > 0:05:25- Yeah.- So, I got a job...
0:05:25 > 0:05:28Er, 35p an hour, as a chef.
0:05:28 > 0:05:32- 35p an hour?! - A lot of money in those days. Yes.
0:05:32 > 0:05:34So, I worked very hard.
0:05:36 > 0:05:37Rami worked incredibly hard,
0:05:37 > 0:05:41starting as a chef of a fried chicken fast food restaurant.
0:05:41 > 0:05:44He was quickly promoted to area manager.
0:05:44 > 0:05:46But his ambitions didn't stop there.
0:05:46 > 0:05:51A few years later, he opened his own corner shop and then, in 1987,
0:05:51 > 0:05:54just 16 years after arriving in Britain,
0:05:54 > 0:05:56he started his own export company.
0:05:56 > 0:06:01Today, he has two shipping companies that transport household items
0:06:01 > 0:06:04all over the world, and they're turning over millions.
0:06:06 > 0:06:08Rami has gone from having nothing
0:06:08 > 0:06:12to being one of the UK's most successful businessmen.
0:06:12 > 0:06:15So, you've decided that you want to help somebody who maybe
0:06:15 > 0:06:18has that sort of entrepreneurial spirit inside them?
0:06:18 > 0:06:25If I could help some youngster with circumstances like mine, who knows?
0:06:25 > 0:06:27There are so many people out there with dreams, ambitions,
0:06:27 > 0:06:30and if I can, in my humble way,
0:06:30 > 0:06:33I can help them, so that's what I try to do
0:06:33 > 0:06:37to repay my debt to society from where I benefited so much.
0:06:37 > 0:06:40I think it's a wonderful thing you're doing.
0:06:40 > 0:06:42In order for you to give back though,
0:06:42 > 0:06:46- I think that first we need to go back, if you don't mind.- Indeed.
0:06:46 > 0:06:49So, no time like the present. Let's go for it, shall we?
0:06:49 > 0:06:52- Let's go for it.- OK.- Thank you. - You lead the way.- Thank you.
0:07:03 > 0:07:06We're hoping that by taking Rami on this trip down memory lane
0:07:06 > 0:07:10it will remind him of how far he's come and spur him on even more
0:07:10 > 0:07:12to want to help someone.
0:07:15 > 0:07:19- So, do you have any idea where we're going on this journey next?- No idea.
0:07:19 > 0:07:22Take me somewhere I might have some association.
0:07:22 > 0:07:24Yeah, you've definitely got an association
0:07:24 > 0:07:26with the place we're going.
0:07:27 > 0:07:28Of course he does.
0:07:28 > 0:07:30We're taking Rami back to West London,
0:07:30 > 0:07:33to the site of his first business venture,
0:07:33 > 0:07:36where his entrepreneurial spirit began to pay off.
0:07:36 > 0:07:38And it's a world away from where he started life.
0:07:40 > 0:07:44What was the political situation like when you were born?
0:07:44 > 0:07:45Well, when I was born...
0:07:48 > 0:07:53..you know, there was a division of India on the base of religion.
0:07:55 > 0:07:59Rami was born at a time of great political and religious turmoil.
0:07:59 > 0:08:04In 1947, India gained independence from Britain.
0:08:04 > 0:08:07It was split in two, with the west side becoming Pakistan
0:08:07 > 0:08:11and majority Muslim and the east becoming the Republic of India
0:08:11 > 0:08:13and majority Hindu and Sikh.
0:08:13 > 0:08:17What followed was a bloody civil war, and it's estimated
0:08:17 > 0:08:20that up to a million people died in riots.
0:08:20 > 0:08:23- NEWSREADER: - Trains crowded with refugees
0:08:23 > 0:08:25make their way to the east, as the fanatical hatred
0:08:25 > 0:08:29between Sikh and Muslim takes a heavy toll of life and property.
0:08:29 > 0:08:32At the time, Rami's father was a prominent lawyer
0:08:32 > 0:08:35and he opposed this partition.
0:08:35 > 0:08:37My father was assassinated
0:08:37 > 0:08:40because he was against the partition of India.
0:08:42 > 0:08:44Sadly, Rami never met his father.
0:08:44 > 0:08:47His mother was seven months pregnant with him when his dad became
0:08:47 > 0:08:49a victim of this bloodshed.
0:08:49 > 0:08:52He tried to help some students who were protesting against
0:08:52 > 0:08:54the partition when he was attacked.
0:08:56 > 0:08:58- So, he was assassinated by fanatics? - By fanatics.
0:08:58 > 0:09:01My father was already a marked man because he made
0:09:01 > 0:09:05so many speeches against the partition and warned them
0:09:05 > 0:09:09of the consequences of religious disharmony and he said,
0:09:09 > 0:09:11"If you create something on the basis of hatred,
0:09:11 > 0:09:14- "you will never be able to remove that base."- Right.
0:09:14 > 0:09:18- I was born two months after the assassination.- Goodness me.
0:09:18 > 0:09:20So then, my mother fled.
0:09:20 > 0:09:23We were eight children - seven brothers, one sister.
0:09:23 > 0:09:26- That must have been so tough for her.- Very tough. Very tough.
0:09:26 > 0:09:29Rami's mother and her eight children
0:09:29 > 0:09:32fled to the Indian side with nothing.
0:09:32 > 0:09:34Rami was just a month old.
0:09:34 > 0:09:38Their only option was to head straight to a refugee camp.
0:09:39 > 0:09:43Their predicament was a far cry from the elevated status
0:09:43 > 0:09:44they'd had back home.
0:09:45 > 0:09:47My mother...
0:09:47 > 0:09:51was very intelligent, she had brought my father's certificates,
0:09:51 > 0:09:54press cuttings, paper, to demonstrate,
0:09:54 > 0:09:56you know, what we were...
0:09:56 > 0:09:58- Yes.- ..and what we had become. - Goodness me.
0:09:58 > 0:10:01So she presented that to the Chief Minister.
0:10:01 > 0:10:05The person was very much impressed with the sacrifice of my father,
0:10:05 > 0:10:07trying to save students,
0:10:07 > 0:10:10so they allotted us a free house.
0:10:10 > 0:10:13They said, 'you can have a free house' - and then he said,
0:10:13 > 0:10:15'all your children will study free.'
0:10:16 > 0:10:19It was this generosity shown by selfless people towards Rami
0:10:19 > 0:10:22and his family that's always stayed with him
0:10:22 > 0:10:25and motivated him to want to help others.
0:10:26 > 0:10:29Some people will be so kind.
0:10:29 > 0:10:33We got back to a reasonable standard of life,
0:10:33 > 0:10:36because of the generosity of so many people.
0:10:36 > 0:10:39So, that's how it is, giving is good.
0:10:39 > 0:10:42- Yeah.- You know, we can make a difference.
0:10:42 > 0:10:45- So, that's stayed with you since childhood then, really, hasn't it? - Yes.
0:10:45 > 0:10:48If you're going to help somebody,
0:10:48 > 0:10:51- you will never be short of anything. - Ah-ha.
0:10:51 > 0:10:54You will still get a lot of peace of mind
0:10:54 > 0:10:56and a lot of satisfaction
0:10:56 > 0:11:00that you have been able to make a difference, too.
0:11:00 > 0:11:02And people remember.
0:11:02 > 0:11:06Remembering his humble beginnings and what he's been through
0:11:06 > 0:11:09is certainly having an effect on Rami and reminding him
0:11:09 > 0:11:12how much in debt he is to some very kind people.
0:11:12 > 0:11:16- But it's about to get even more emotional.- Oh...
0:11:16 > 0:11:18This brings back memories.
0:11:18 > 0:11:20- Really?- Yes.
0:11:21 > 0:11:24This brings back memory...
0:11:24 > 0:11:26What memories is it bringing back?
0:11:26 > 0:11:29Well, this is... My warehouse used to be here.
0:11:31 > 0:11:33Park Avenue.
0:11:33 > 0:11:34Yes, just up there.
0:11:35 > 0:11:40Oh, I see, you're bringing back to my...roots.
0:11:40 > 0:11:42This is where it all started taking off?
0:11:42 > 0:11:46Yes, it all started taking off in this area.
0:11:46 > 0:11:50- There it is. You see that, er, roof?- Yeah.
0:11:50 > 0:11:54Because I... we built a little mezzanine.
0:11:54 > 0:11:56You know, there was no office.
0:11:56 > 0:12:00So, that is where we sat, in that...roof.
0:12:00 > 0:12:02Oh, those were the days...
0:12:02 > 0:12:07Such a small warehouse here and we really fighting to get the cargo out
0:12:07 > 0:12:10so we could get more in.
0:12:10 > 0:12:11It was a disaster.
0:12:11 > 0:12:12ALED LAUGHS
0:12:12 > 0:12:16Because, you know, so many times we couldn't take the deliveries in.
0:12:16 > 0:12:17Brilliant.
0:12:17 > 0:12:20We've arrived in Park Royal West London,
0:12:20 > 0:12:22a district of warehouse businesses.
0:12:24 > 0:12:27So, is this bringing back memories for you?
0:12:27 > 0:12:29Oh, this brings back memories.
0:12:29 > 0:12:31This is my humble beginning.
0:12:31 > 0:12:34This is the place, I must salute this place.
0:12:35 > 0:12:39This is the warehouse where Rami's export business really took off,
0:12:39 > 0:12:4129 years ago.
0:12:41 > 0:12:46This was the first freehold property which I bought, so this is...
0:12:46 > 0:12:48you know, mother of my business.
0:12:48 > 0:12:51- I love the smile on your face. - Yes, yes, yes.
0:12:51 > 0:12:54Yes. You know, we were so excited when we first bought it,
0:12:54 > 0:12:56we felt like...
0:12:56 > 0:12:57- King of Arabia. - ALED LAUGHS
0:12:57 > 0:13:00That we got a freehold property for us.
0:13:00 > 0:13:05- Brilliant.- Amazing...- Shall we go in?- Let's go in.- Come on.- Yes.
0:13:06 > 0:13:08Now a pet food wholesaler,
0:13:08 > 0:13:12it was here that Rami's long-held dream of entrepreneurial success
0:13:12 > 0:13:14was finally becoming a reality.
0:13:15 > 0:13:18Oh, dear, oh, dear, oh, dear. This was my warehouse.
0:13:18 > 0:13:22It was a step up from his first premises.
0:13:22 > 0:13:24I'm so pleased to be here.
0:13:24 > 0:13:29I never, ever thought I would ever be coming back. Yes.
0:13:29 > 0:13:32- So, it's a busy place today as well, isn't it?- Amazing place.
0:13:34 > 0:13:36Oh, dear, oh, dear, oh, dear.
0:13:36 > 0:13:39- Look at this, my office used to be up there.- OK.
0:13:39 > 0:13:40We used to load containers.
0:13:40 > 0:13:43Unbelievable. We felt like king.
0:13:43 > 0:13:45- You know, when we had our own warehouse.- Yes.
0:13:45 > 0:13:48- So, oh, my God, I tell you... - How long were you here for?
0:13:48 > 0:13:52- We were there for nearly... two years?- Right.- Yes.
0:13:52 > 0:13:54So when you were here, you started with nothing, really?
0:13:54 > 0:13:58My beginning was I started with just £2 capital,
0:13:58 > 0:14:01a typewriter and somebody had given me their second-hand...
0:14:01 > 0:14:04- desk.- OK.- Office desk.
0:14:04 > 0:14:08Rami used these modest tools to start his export business
0:14:08 > 0:14:12from a small rented self storage unit, which he called his shed,
0:14:12 > 0:14:13a mile from here.
0:14:13 > 0:14:17He was there for two years before upgrading premises.
0:14:17 > 0:14:21This is the first warehouse which I bought, from a shed.
0:14:21 > 0:14:23You have no idea how much I had to struggle.
0:14:23 > 0:14:27My own bank manager refused to finance the property,
0:14:27 > 0:14:31so I went to another bank manager and he looked at the plan, he said,
0:14:31 > 0:14:35"Over-ambitious plan, I don't think the bank can support it."
0:14:35 > 0:14:38Despite these knockbacks, Rami never gave up,
0:14:38 > 0:14:41even when he was refused by a third bank.
0:14:41 > 0:14:45It took a fourth attempt to finally get what he wanted.
0:14:46 > 0:14:49I walked to another bank, so the bank manager came out, he said,
0:14:49 > 0:14:52- "How soon do you want the loan?" "Quickly."- Wow.
0:14:52 > 0:14:55I said, "Within seven days." And we got the loan, we got the property.
0:14:55 > 0:14:59- Wow.- And I went back to this guy, I say, "You know, in our country,
0:14:59 > 0:15:03"we touch somebody's feet as a mark of...respect."
0:15:03 > 0:15:06So, let me touch your feet. He said, "Why?"
0:15:06 > 0:15:07THEY LAUGH
0:15:07 > 0:15:09"Because you have done me...
0:15:09 > 0:15:11- "greatest favour."- Yeah.
0:15:11 > 0:15:14- "Now I'm on the road to progress." - Absolutely.
0:15:14 > 0:15:16"And if you did not finance me,
0:15:16 > 0:15:19"I wouldn't have been going to the next step."
0:15:20 > 0:15:24He was his own boss of an albeit modest operation.
0:15:24 > 0:15:28Rami's freight forwarding company shipped consumer goods to Africa,
0:15:28 > 0:15:30the Middle East and the Caribbean.
0:15:30 > 0:15:33They could be anything from beds, stereos,
0:15:33 > 0:15:36chandeliers and even the odd black cab.
0:15:36 > 0:15:39So, who else was part of the company when you were here?
0:15:39 > 0:15:42- Well, we only had staff of two. - Oh, OK.
0:15:42 > 0:15:44Yes, when we started.
0:15:44 > 0:15:47Me and another guy, who worked as a driver.
0:15:47 > 0:15:49And they were able to get the secretary.
0:15:49 > 0:15:53It was very happy days here, I must say, because this was a very lucky
0:15:53 > 0:15:56place for us and the business kept growing
0:15:56 > 0:16:01and we were able to manage our own affairs.
0:16:01 > 0:16:05So, without this place, you wouldn't be the company you are now?
0:16:05 > 0:16:07- This is the mother of my companies. - Oh.- Yes.
0:16:07 > 0:16:11You know, from here, now I have warehouses,
0:16:11 > 0:16:13nearly 100,000 square feet.
0:16:13 > 0:16:17- I mean, this was just 4,500 square feet.- Yeah.
0:16:17 > 0:16:18To 100,000 square feet.
0:16:20 > 0:16:22This unit is a fraction of the size of the warehouse that Rami
0:16:22 > 0:16:24uses for his businesses today.
0:16:27 > 0:16:31- Thank God that this property opened the door for me.- Brilliant.
0:16:31 > 0:16:34And being here now has reinforced that feeling
0:16:34 > 0:16:36that you want to help other people?
0:16:36 > 0:16:41I do, because it's very important. Somebody helped me, yes.
0:16:41 > 0:16:42And look where I am. So, there you are.
0:16:42 > 0:16:45This is an amazing place to be here again.
0:16:45 > 0:16:49- Shall we head off? - Yes, of course.- OK.
0:16:55 > 0:16:58Coming up, we've been on the hunt for someone with the
0:16:58 > 0:17:02entrepreneurial spirit that we hope was strike a chord with Rami.
0:17:02 > 0:17:04And we think we've found them.
0:17:04 > 0:17:08She's an ambitious mum, who's juggling looking after her young
0:17:08 > 0:17:11family with getting her business off the ground.
0:17:11 > 0:17:12THEY SQUEAL
0:17:12 > 0:17:16She thinks we're making a programme about aspiring entrepreneurs.
0:17:16 > 0:17:19She has no idea the real reason behind Rami's visit
0:17:19 > 0:17:22and that she could be in for a life-changing gift.
0:17:27 > 0:17:29While Rami had the vision and conviction to build his
0:17:29 > 0:17:32enterprise into a multinational company,
0:17:32 > 0:17:36he had a lot of people supporting and advising him.
0:17:36 > 0:17:39There was one person in particular who was there in the early days.
0:17:39 > 0:17:41This used to your old cafe, yeah?
0:17:41 > 0:17:44Yes, we used to come and have lunch here sometimes.
0:17:44 > 0:17:47Or bring your clients here.
0:17:47 > 0:17:49Oh, my goodness. It's all changed now.
0:17:49 > 0:17:52- You might recognise that man. - Oh, of course. Of course.
0:17:52 > 0:17:55This is the gentleman. How are you, sir?
0:17:55 > 0:17:59Rami's accountant, Shuja, is here with his wife, Tajalli.
0:17:59 > 0:18:02Rami and Shuja haven't seen each other for ten years.
0:18:02 > 0:18:06- It's been a long time. - A long time. 10, 12 years.
0:18:06 > 0:18:08- Has he changed at all? - He is getting younger.
0:18:08 > 0:18:10- Yes.- Oh!
0:18:10 > 0:18:14- He was the first person to guide me.- Really?- Yes.
0:18:14 > 0:18:18He was the guy who told me, "Go your own way, do your own thing."
0:18:18 > 0:18:20Did he give you lots of advice?
0:18:20 > 0:18:22Lots of good advice, lots of good advice.
0:18:22 > 0:18:27"Be straight and don't do any creative accountancy."
0:18:28 > 0:18:31- We'll have a little sit down and a cup of coffee, shall we?- Very good.
0:18:31 > 0:18:35Shuja was Rami's accountant and financial adviser when he set up
0:18:35 > 0:18:37his company and for the first six years.
0:18:38 > 0:18:42So, when you were working together, was it all work or was there a bit
0:18:42 > 0:18:44of down time, a bit of play as well?
0:18:44 > 0:18:47It was work plus family relationship.
0:18:47 > 0:18:53We knew his in-laws and we just liked each other, I guess.
0:18:53 > 0:18:56Simple as that.
0:18:56 > 0:18:58Because, you know, we were totally novice.
0:18:58 > 0:19:01We had no idea of business, no idea of finance.
0:19:01 > 0:19:03We had nothing. We just started.
0:19:03 > 0:19:07We wanted someone who would give us brotherly advice and guide
0:19:07 > 0:19:11us and everything. So, that's why we gelled.
0:19:11 > 0:19:15We had a very straightforward, serious business and we were
0:19:15 > 0:19:18growing at that time.
0:19:18 > 0:19:21The only thing funny was our own lives.
0:19:21 > 0:19:23We were working all the hours.
0:19:23 > 0:19:27- I've been in the accountancy business for nearly 40 years.- Gosh.
0:19:27 > 0:19:29A long time.
0:19:29 > 0:19:33And I've seen a few ups and downs in my life.
0:19:33 > 0:19:39From clients' point of view and from my personal point of view.
0:19:40 > 0:19:44But it does give me a lot of pleasure
0:19:44 > 0:19:48- to see people going forward full speed.- Yeah.
0:19:48 > 0:19:50Because that is how the world should be.
0:19:50 > 0:19:53What I like about this story particularly as well is that he
0:19:53 > 0:19:56hasn't forgotten his humble beginnings either.
0:19:56 > 0:19:59- No, he will never forget it. - No, can't forget it.
0:19:59 > 0:20:01You can't forget your past.
0:20:01 > 0:20:05How do you feel about Rami going back and giving back?
0:20:05 > 0:20:08We have a duty.
0:20:08 > 0:20:11A duty if whatever we have,
0:20:11 > 0:20:16- different people will have different skills.- Yeah.
0:20:16 > 0:20:19- And they can all benefit. - Yes, give back.
0:20:20 > 0:20:23This has clearly been quite the nostalgic reunion for a Rami.
0:20:24 > 0:20:27No, he is so wonderful. I can't repay you enough.
0:20:27 > 0:20:30This is amazing.
0:20:30 > 0:20:35Today for me, is like going to a shrine.
0:20:35 > 0:20:39- Meeting my accountant who put me on the straight.- Yeah.
0:20:39 > 0:20:41- Good, I'm glad.- Thank you.
0:20:41 > 0:20:43- This is a great surprise. - It's a pleasure.
0:20:43 > 0:20:45Amazing surprise.
0:20:45 > 0:20:50- You see, we came just because it was you.- I know, I know.
0:20:50 > 0:20:52I'm so humbled and so grateful.
0:20:55 > 0:20:57- So happy to meet you. - Yes, lovely to see you.
0:20:57 > 0:20:59It's really great.
0:20:59 > 0:21:02The journey back to be modest beginnings of where Rami's
0:21:02 > 0:21:06business enterprise started has been truly inspiring.
0:21:06 > 0:21:08This brings back memories.
0:21:08 > 0:21:10This is my humble beginning.
0:21:10 > 0:21:13This is the place. I must salute this place.
0:21:15 > 0:21:19But most importantly, it's made him even more focused.
0:21:19 > 0:21:22Being here now, has it been reinforced that feeling that you
0:21:22 > 0:21:24want to help other people?
0:21:24 > 0:21:26I do, because it's very important.
0:21:26 > 0:21:29Somebody helped me, yes, and look where I am.
0:21:35 > 0:21:39This trip down memory lane has been such an emotional one for a Rami.
0:21:39 > 0:21:41Thanks to the people who believed in him,
0:21:41 > 0:21:45he's turned a small business into an international enterprise.
0:21:45 > 0:21:47An amazing achievement.
0:21:47 > 0:21:50And, you know, he's not forgotten his humble origins.
0:21:50 > 0:21:53Now, you want to give something back to somebody who needed helping hand
0:21:53 > 0:21:56and I think we've found just the person.
0:21:59 > 0:22:03On a south-east London housing estate in Peckham lives 29-year-old
0:22:03 > 0:22:07Yetunde, with her husband and three young children.
0:22:11 > 0:22:14Like Rami, Yetunde came over the UK.
0:22:14 > 0:22:18She was born in Nigeria and arrived here as a nine-year-old.
0:22:18 > 0:22:21And like Rami, Yetunde is also a grafter.
0:22:24 > 0:22:26As well as holding down a regular job,
0:22:26 > 0:22:29looking after the kids and doing all the housework,
0:22:29 > 0:22:31Yetunde designs and tailor-makes dresses
0:22:31 > 0:22:33in the confines of her kitchen.
0:22:34 > 0:22:38She has aspirations of being a fashion designer with her own
0:22:38 > 0:22:41label, so she has that fighting entrepreneurial spirit Rami
0:22:41 > 0:22:43is looking for.
0:22:46 > 0:22:50With these similarities, we've arranged for them to meet.
0:22:50 > 0:22:52I'm going to meet a young lady called Yetunde.
0:22:53 > 0:22:56She has very difficult circumstances,
0:22:56 > 0:22:59but with great ambition.
0:22:59 > 0:23:02This reminds me of my own circumstances.
0:23:02 > 0:23:05I had big plans and I didn't know how to fulfil them.
0:23:07 > 0:23:12This meeting is extremely important and could make a huge difference to
0:23:12 > 0:23:15Yetunde and her family. So, let's hope they hit it off
0:23:15 > 0:23:16and Rami feels he can help her.
0:23:18 > 0:23:21- Good morning.- Good morning. - How are you today?- Oh, I'm fine.
0:23:21 > 0:23:23- Rami Ranger.- Hiya. - How are you?- Fine.
0:23:23 > 0:23:27Take a seat. Do you want a cup of coffee?
0:23:27 > 0:23:30- Water?- Water will be fine.- OK.
0:23:30 > 0:23:32Thank you, thank you.
0:23:32 > 0:23:34Yetunde things were making a programme
0:23:34 > 0:23:35about aspiring entrepreneurs.
0:23:35 > 0:23:40She has absolutely no idea that she could be in line for a gift that
0:23:40 > 0:23:42would transform her life.
0:23:42 > 0:23:45So, good to meet you and I'm very curious to find out,
0:23:45 > 0:23:48where did you get this idea to be a fashion designer?
0:23:48 > 0:23:53When I was younger, around seven, my auntie, she was a tailor.
0:23:53 > 0:23:56I used to sit next to her. I used to watch what she does
0:23:56 > 0:23:57and it was fascinating,
0:23:57 > 0:24:01to actually see from cutting to a finished product.
0:24:01 > 0:24:03Yeah, so I would get the scrap of the fabrics and I would make
0:24:03 > 0:24:05those clothes.
0:24:05 > 0:24:08I actually quite enjoyed doing things with my hands.
0:24:08 > 0:24:10Nice for the childhood.
0:24:10 > 0:24:13Yeah, I had fashion in me, because I actually quite enjoy sketching
0:24:13 > 0:24:15and I actually quite enjoy making stuff.
0:24:15 > 0:24:17I'm always happy once I make stuff
0:24:17 > 0:24:19and I see people wearing them and are happy about it.
0:24:19 > 0:24:22- So, that's what makes me want to go. - It satisfies you, satisfaction.
0:24:22 > 0:24:24Yes, satisfaction.
0:24:24 > 0:24:26But Yetunde's aspirations to be a fashion designer are fraught
0:24:26 > 0:24:29with difficulties.
0:24:29 > 0:24:32As well as having to run after her three young children,
0:24:32 > 0:24:35she also has to care for her husband,
0:24:35 > 0:24:36who has sickle cell anaemia -
0:24:36 > 0:24:40an incredibly painful and debilitating genetic disease.
0:24:40 > 0:24:44It means he finds it difficult to work and relies heavily on his wife.
0:24:46 > 0:24:50I'm very proud of her, because she's a very strong woman.
0:24:50 > 0:24:53Yetunde also does all the cooking and cleaning, whilst holding down
0:24:53 > 0:24:56a job as a hospital appointments coordinator
0:24:56 > 0:24:58to support her young family.
0:24:58 > 0:25:02- Are you full-time there or part-time?- I was full-time before.
0:25:02 > 0:25:05I cut it down to two days, so that I can concentrate on my
0:25:05 > 0:25:08business and also try and concentrate on my family as
0:25:08 > 0:25:11well, because my husband has got sickle cell as well.
0:25:11 > 0:25:12- Oh, your husband has sickle cell? - Yeah.
0:25:12 > 0:25:14- Is it sickle cell anaemia? - Anaemia, yeah.
0:25:14 > 0:25:17- That's a very painful one. - Yes, it's a very painful one.
0:25:17 > 0:25:19- So, you're looking after your husband?- Yeah.
0:25:19 > 0:25:21- You're looking at your child? - Children, yeah.
0:25:21 > 0:25:24- And you are also doing part-time job?- Yeah.
0:25:24 > 0:25:27Plus you're trying to mix with your...
0:25:27 > 0:25:31- Business work, yeah. - Oh, you're a tough girl.
0:25:31 > 0:25:35Yetunde's fighting spirit in the face of all her challenges clearly
0:25:35 > 0:25:38impresses Rami, as does her entrepreneurial resolve.
0:25:40 > 0:25:44Yetunde specialises in designing and making dresses using African
0:25:44 > 0:25:46prints with modern-day fabrics.
0:25:48 > 0:25:49Her primary models are her children,
0:25:49 > 0:25:52Arafat,
0:25:52 > 0:25:54Alamin
0:25:54 > 0:25:56and Amira.
0:25:56 > 0:25:58Mum is a very great sew artist.
0:25:58 > 0:26:00She's fantastic.
0:26:02 > 0:26:07And she makes good clothes for us, even when we go to parties.
0:26:07 > 0:26:10It takes Yetunde just three hours to make a simple dress,
0:26:10 > 0:26:14but up to a week to make a more complicated bridesmaid dress.
0:26:15 > 0:26:17So, do you already have some customers?
0:26:17 > 0:26:20- Yes, some customers. - And are you getting repeat orders?
0:26:20 > 0:26:23- Yeah, I do get repeat orders. - Well, that's it. That's a company.
0:26:23 > 0:26:26When you start getting repeat orders, that is a very,
0:26:26 > 0:26:27very big compliment.
0:26:27 > 0:26:31That means your product has arrived.
0:26:32 > 0:26:36Yetunde's friends were her first clients before she launched her
0:26:36 > 0:26:38fashion business six months ago.
0:26:38 > 0:26:40But already, she's in demand.
0:26:40 > 0:26:44Just this month, she was paid £700 for her bespoke designs.
0:26:46 > 0:26:48Are you making money?
0:26:48 > 0:26:52I could say a bit of money, but not what I would love to make now.
0:26:52 > 0:26:55But you wouldn't be able to give up your job full-time?
0:26:55 > 0:26:57- Not at the moment, no.- OK.
0:26:57 > 0:26:58So, you've made some,
0:26:58 > 0:27:01but if the business was to grow... And I think it will grow now.
0:27:01 > 0:27:04- Yes, I would.- So, then you could give up the job.
0:27:04 > 0:27:07- Exactly, that's my... Yeah.- I see.
0:27:07 > 0:27:09That's wonderful.
0:27:09 > 0:27:10So, don't give up.
0:27:10 > 0:27:14Yetunde wants to expand her business, which is already growing.
0:27:14 > 0:27:17She gets commissions through word-of-mouth
0:27:17 > 0:27:19and marketing and designs on social media.
0:27:19 > 0:27:24But her success is impacting on the whole family.
0:27:24 > 0:27:29She makes good clothes, but she fills up the whole kitchen
0:27:29 > 0:27:34and the sitting room, so me and my brother and my sister and my dad
0:27:34 > 0:27:37don't have nowhere to go.
0:27:37 > 0:27:39Just like Rami wanting to build up his business from a shed,
0:27:39 > 0:27:44Yetunde is struggling to take things forward from her tiny kitchen.
0:27:44 > 0:27:46And how is the business progressing now?
0:27:46 > 0:27:49Well, I've just started, so I'm looking forward to it
0:27:49 > 0:27:53progressing into something big in the future.
0:27:53 > 0:27:56But right now, I'm trying to work from the kitchen as you can see.
0:27:56 > 0:27:58Yes, yes. No, I can see.
0:27:58 > 0:28:03You bring back my memories. I started my business from a shed.
0:28:03 > 0:28:07- Wow.- You know, a rented shed a few years back and coming to you
0:28:07 > 0:28:11has taken me back to my old days when I was trying to make
0:28:11 > 0:28:14a success of my business.
0:28:14 > 0:28:17A lot of people didn't realise. A lot of people thought I was just
0:28:17 > 0:28:20- talking, you know. - I know how you feel, yeah.
0:28:20 > 0:28:24It's clear Yetunde's passion and determination are resonating
0:28:24 > 0:28:27with Rami and reminding him of his younger self.
0:28:29 > 0:28:31And making a success of her business will be
0:28:31 > 0:28:34a huge benefit for the whole family.
0:28:34 > 0:28:36I'm going to be very happy,
0:28:36 > 0:28:38because that's what she's wanted from the beginning.
0:28:38 > 0:28:40So, I will be very, very happy.
0:28:40 > 0:28:44As long as she's happy, I'm happy.
0:28:45 > 0:28:48What Rami wants to know now is how Yetunde plans to expand her business
0:28:48 > 0:28:53and make her dream of being a top fashion designer come true.
0:28:53 > 0:28:57What can help you to achieve your ambition?
0:28:57 > 0:28:59Advertising.
0:28:59 > 0:29:04- Yeah.- Loads of my stuff, I would need some models.
0:29:04 > 0:29:06And I need space as well.
0:29:06 > 0:29:09As I keep saying, I know I can do a lot, but without space,
0:29:09 > 0:29:11sometimes I get frustrated working around here.
0:29:11 > 0:29:14I know, I can see everywhere you've got your dresses on the tables.
0:29:14 > 0:29:16But because I'm determined...
0:29:16 > 0:29:19Plus you need an atmosphere of work-like atmosphere,
0:29:19 > 0:29:21- not in the house. - Exactly. Yeah, yeah. Exactly.
0:29:21 > 0:29:23When I'm sewing, I'm in my own world,
0:29:23 > 0:29:25so I'm concentrating on what I'm doing.
0:29:25 > 0:29:30And I find it hard sometimes to do that when the kids are around
0:29:30 > 0:29:32and making so much noise.
0:29:32 > 0:29:35I have to pick up things for them, do this and do that.
0:29:36 > 0:29:39But it's not just space that Yetunde needs,
0:29:39 > 0:29:41she'd also love some new equipment.
0:29:41 > 0:29:44I wanted to buy an industrial sewing machine.
0:29:44 > 0:29:46These are not strong.
0:29:46 > 0:29:48I've had to change that machine like twice now.
0:29:48 > 0:29:51- Because it's not tough enough? - It's not tough enough.
0:29:51 > 0:29:54- Robust enough.- Yeah, and also if I buy industrial, there is
0:29:54 > 0:29:57- no space to put it round the house.- Sure.
0:29:57 > 0:30:01There's no doubt that Rami has been taken by Yetunde and her passion
0:30:01 > 0:30:03and ambition to fight against the odds
0:30:03 > 0:30:05and make it as a fashion designer.
0:30:05 > 0:30:08So, I think you have a very bright future.
0:30:08 > 0:30:11- I can see your positive attitude. - Thank you.
0:30:11 > 0:30:14You are a tough girl. It's been wonderful meeting you.
0:30:14 > 0:30:17- Thank you for having me. - Thank you very much. Thank you.
0:30:17 > 0:30:20- Thank you. And have a great day. - You too.- Thank you.
0:30:23 > 0:30:25OK, I'll just show you to the door.
0:30:25 > 0:30:29This meeting has been pivotal for both Yetunde and Rami.
0:30:32 > 0:30:35It was such an inspirational experience.
0:30:35 > 0:30:38It brought back memories.
0:30:38 > 0:30:40You know, I was once in her situation,
0:30:40 > 0:30:43but I was actually moved listening to her story,
0:30:43 > 0:30:47how determined she is. And with all the difficult circumstances
0:30:47 > 0:30:50surrounding her, she still wants to realise her ambition and
0:30:50 > 0:30:52wants to make the difference.
0:30:56 > 0:31:00Rami sees so much of his younger self in Yetunde,
0:31:00 > 0:31:02She has that drive and passion he had as
0:31:02 > 0:31:06a young entrepreneur to build her fashion business and make
0:31:06 > 0:31:09a name for herself, in spite of all her challenges.
0:31:09 > 0:31:12But deciding whether Yetunde is truly deserving of his help
0:31:12 > 0:31:14is quite a task.
0:31:14 > 0:31:17So, he's seeking the advice of his business partners -
0:31:17 > 0:31:19his wife, Renu, and right-hand man Ray.
0:31:19 > 0:31:25I went to see a young lady in Peckham, her name is Yetunde,
0:31:25 > 0:31:28and she has extraordinary circumstances.
0:31:28 > 0:31:32Her husband is not well, so she has to take care of her husband,
0:31:32 > 0:31:36three young kids, she works part-time in a hospital and
0:31:36 > 0:31:39then, on top of that, she has a desire to build her own business.
0:31:39 > 0:31:46So, she makes dresses from her living room and she is trying to
0:31:46 > 0:31:48build that business from scratch.
0:31:48 > 0:31:54So, I wanted to know if it will be all right for us to help her,
0:31:54 > 0:31:58because she is a very honourable young lady and she has big plans.
0:31:58 > 0:32:02- So, do you think we should consider her?- Absolutely, absolutely.
0:32:02 > 0:32:06It's very difficult to start a business, as you know.
0:32:06 > 0:32:11It's very difficult to get the help from the bank people, for sure.
0:32:11 > 0:32:13Yeah, I think it's a very good idea.
0:32:13 > 0:32:16To have that little bit of pressure taken off of her.
0:32:16 > 0:32:17What you think?
0:32:17 > 0:32:20I'm sure she's torn between the three children and then she's
0:32:20 > 0:32:24got her business and then trying to get that of the ground.
0:32:24 > 0:32:26So, she's working, she is doing all that, she's being the
0:32:26 > 0:32:30breadwinner, plus the mum, plus the cook, plus a cleaner.
0:32:30 > 0:32:33- Everything.- So, I think, if we could, yeah.
0:32:33 > 0:32:37And so far, her business is giving good signs.
0:32:37 > 0:32:40So, there is a sign to progress.
0:32:40 > 0:32:42She reminds me of my own story.
0:32:42 > 0:32:47Do you remember the day when we were packing, unloading, loading,
0:32:47 > 0:32:50- going to the airport? - Those were the days.
0:32:50 > 0:32:52Those were the days. Standing in the queue.
0:32:52 > 0:32:54- Where you had to do everything yourself.- Yes, I remember.
0:32:54 > 0:32:56We've come a long way.
0:32:56 > 0:33:00I was lucky, because I have my wife, Renu, to help me when I started my
0:33:00 > 0:33:03business and she supported me.
0:33:03 > 0:33:05- So, we all agree?- Absolutely.
0:33:05 > 0:33:07It would be nice to give something back.
0:33:07 > 0:33:10For Rami getting Renu and Ray's blessing to support Yetunde
0:33:10 > 0:33:13means absolutely everything.
0:33:13 > 0:33:17After all, Rami and Yetunde are well and truly kindred spirits.
0:33:17 > 0:33:19Now that we've gone back into his past,
0:33:19 > 0:33:22Rami needs to think of the future and decide in what way
0:33:22 > 0:33:25he can make a life-changing difference
0:33:25 > 0:33:26to Yetunde and her family.
0:33:36 > 0:33:38So, I'm on my way to catch up with Rami.
0:33:38 > 0:33:40I know that during the week, he met up with Yetunde.
0:33:40 > 0:33:43I'm really interested to hear what he thought of her.
0:33:43 > 0:33:45They are polar opposites when it comes to wealth.
0:33:45 > 0:33:47Yes, of course they are. But rather similar
0:33:47 > 0:33:50when it comes to entrepreneurial spirit. I think so, anyway.
0:33:50 > 0:33:53Seeing Yetunde struggle must have really reminded Rami of how
0:33:53 > 0:33:55he struggled when he started out in life.
0:33:55 > 0:33:59I wonder if he's willing to help fulfil her business potential.
0:33:59 > 0:34:01Let's go and find out.
0:34:06 > 0:34:09Rami is waiting for me just around the corner
0:34:09 > 0:34:11from a park where Yetunde has gathered friends
0:34:11 > 0:34:14for a photoshoot to model her latest designs
0:34:14 > 0:34:17to advertise on social media, so it's time to find out
0:34:17 > 0:34:22precisely what Rami's decided for the unstoppable entrepreneur.
0:34:22 > 0:34:25- Hey, Rami! How are you?- How are you? - Nice to see you again.
0:34:25 > 0:34:29- Very good to see you. Thank you. - So, you've met up with Yetunde.
0:34:29 > 0:34:32- Yes, I did. What an experience. - Really?
0:34:32 > 0:34:36Yes, she's an inspirational young lady, and listening to her story,
0:34:36 > 0:34:39- I was really moved.- In what way?
0:34:39 > 0:34:44It brought back memories for me and I felt exactly as she was feeling today.
0:34:44 > 0:34:46Another immigrant like myself, you know,
0:34:46 > 0:34:49trying to realise her ambition and dreams.
0:34:49 > 0:34:56I could really experience the determination and the motivation
0:34:56 > 0:34:57she has to rise above
0:34:57 > 0:35:00all the challenges she's facing at the moment.
0:35:00 > 0:35:04- Yeah, cos she's struggling with space at the moment, isn't she?- Yes.
0:35:04 > 0:35:06So have you decided that you're going to help her?
0:35:06 > 0:35:09- Yes, I'm going to help her, definitely.- In what way?
0:35:09 > 0:35:10First things first.
0:35:10 > 0:35:13She's looking for space and I'm going to offer her
0:35:13 > 0:35:17a space in my warehouse, free of charge, she can stay there,
0:35:17 > 0:35:20- no bill for electricity, no water, no gas.- Wow!
0:35:20 > 0:35:22And the other thing is,
0:35:22 > 0:35:25because you know we are exporting to Africa,
0:35:25 > 0:35:27the people from all over Africa come visit me
0:35:27 > 0:35:31- and then she'll be able to make contact with these people.- Wow.
0:35:31 > 0:35:36And I will also help design her a catalogue and I have
0:35:36 > 0:35:41- an in-house design team, so we will help her get a catalogue...- Wow.
0:35:41 > 0:35:45..ready for her, and she also needs an industrial sewing machine.
0:35:45 > 0:35:47- At the moment, she's using a domestic machine...- Right.
0:35:47 > 0:35:49..which breaks down, it's not as fast,
0:35:49 > 0:35:53so I'll give her the industrial sewing machine so she can work fast.
0:35:53 > 0:35:57Wow! Rami, all this sounds like a fortune!
0:35:57 > 0:36:01The gift of providing Yetunde with warehouse space and buying her
0:36:01 > 0:36:06an industrial sewing machine will cost Rami around £7,000.
0:36:06 > 0:36:09Britain has been great to me. I came here with nothing.
0:36:09 > 0:36:13Now with the help of so many people, I have something now,
0:36:13 > 0:36:15so it's only fair that I can also share,
0:36:15 > 0:36:19so I'm going to help her, and also I will guide her
0:36:19 > 0:36:23so she can learn how to build a world-class company from nothing.
0:36:23 > 0:36:26I think you're being so, so generous, I really do, Rami.
0:36:26 > 0:36:29Have you put all your thoughts down in a letter, have you?
0:36:29 > 0:36:32- Yes, I have done a letter to her in my own handwriting.- OK.
0:36:32 > 0:36:34Well, I know that she's in a park.
0:36:34 > 0:36:36- I think we should go and surprise her now, don't you?- Let's do that.
0:36:36 > 0:36:38- Come on.- Let's do it. Thank you.
0:36:40 > 0:36:44It's that exciting moment - telling Yetunde what we've really been
0:36:44 > 0:36:49up to, and for her to discover that her life's about to change for ever.
0:36:49 > 0:36:50So how are you feeling?
0:36:50 > 0:36:52Oh, well, I'm really excited,
0:36:52 > 0:36:56looking forward to meeting her and to trying to surprise her.
0:36:56 > 0:36:57Well, we'll definitely surprise her.
0:36:57 > 0:37:00She has no idea you're coming, she has no idea I'm coming.
0:37:00 > 0:37:03- I'm getting a bit nervous. - Oh, well. This is going to be fun.
0:37:03 > 0:37:06Yeah, she's having a little photo session with her friends
0:37:06 > 0:37:09just behind that bush over there, I think, so...
0:37:09 > 0:37:12- Like to capture her expression. - Yeah. Should be good.
0:37:12 > 0:37:15- I want to surprise her. - Absolutely.
0:37:15 > 0:37:17I just hope she can read your writing!
0:37:17 > 0:37:19- I hope so, otherwise you'll have to help her.- OK.
0:37:24 > 0:37:26She hasn't seen us yet.
0:37:26 > 0:37:29She's now seen us, I think.

0:43:15 > 0:43:16What an amazing experience that was.
0:43:16 > 0:43:19Yetunde was in total shock, wasn't she?
0:43:19 > 0:43:21There's no doubt that she's a very talented designer
0:43:21 > 0:43:25but, with Rami's generosity and advice, he's sowed the seed
0:43:25 > 0:43:29for her to grow her business and have a much brighter future.
