0:04:15 > 0:04:19Best friend and fellow WI member Trish would drop in all the time.

0:04:20 > 0:04:24Trish used to come round and she'd bring her pyjamas and say,

0:04:24 > 0:04:27"You know, I'm stopping tonight."

0:05:08 > 0:05:11Angela's life has played out like a Hollywood movie.

0:05:11 > 0:05:12But before we hear about that,

0:05:12 > 0:05:14I want to find out a bit more about John.

0:05:14 > 0:05:18So our first destination is a place that was very close to his heart.

0:05:19 > 0:05:22Tell me a bit about John and how you first met, then.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25- Because you were both very young, weren't you?- Yes.

0:05:25 > 0:05:27- I was 17 when I met John.- Right.

0:05:53 > 0:05:54- And you were keen. - Yeah, I was.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59After a couple of meetings, John asked Angela out,

0:05:59 > 0:06:03having heard she had free tickets to a student dance.

0:06:03 > 0:06:06John phoned up at 4:55 and said,

0:06:06 > 0:06:10"I hear you're going to the dance tonight. Can I take you?"

0:06:10 > 0:06:11Oh...

0:06:11 > 0:06:12He was a bit of a Yorkshireman,

0:06:12 > 0:06:15because he knew I'd got free tickets!

0:06:15 > 0:06:16ALED LAUGHS

0:06:16 > 0:06:18So that was the reason, then, OK.

0:06:18 > 0:06:20So, anyway, yes. So...

0:06:20 > 0:06:21And that was that.

0:06:23 > 0:06:28A year later, we got engaged on graduation day.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31- Gosh.- And a year after that, we were married.

0:06:38 > 0:06:42Two years after their big day, their first child Rachel was born.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45And their second, Matthew, came in 1971.

0:06:45 > 0:06:47They were extremely happy.

0:06:49 > 0:06:51What was so special about him?

0:06:51 > 0:06:54- Well, he was good-looking.- Yeah.

0:06:54 > 0:06:55And he had a lovely smile.

0:06:57 > 0:06:59- And he was quite shy.- Right.

0:06:59 > 0:07:02You know, it was just one of those things,

0:07:02 > 0:07:05kind of love at first sight and you just click.

0:07:36 > 0:07:39into a museum for the area.

0:07:40 > 0:07:43This is one of the places that I managed to bring John

0:07:43 > 0:07:45when he was really, really poorly,

0:11:40 > 0:11:44So a nice picture of a sunset or a village green or whatever.

0:12:06 > 0:12:09But we never did anything about it.

0:12:09 > 0:12:11We just talked about it for ages.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15Until John was ill and he was in hospital.

0:12:15 > 0:12:19And one day, all the girls were there.

0:12:19 > 0:12:23- And we were telling him, you know, "We're going to do this."- Yeah.

0:12:23 > 0:12:27And he said, "You'll never do that. You're just all talk."

0:12:31 > 0:12:32Yeah.

0:12:32 > 0:12:34- Feisty Yorkshire ladies.- Yeah.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37Three months after John died in 1998,

0:12:37 > 0:12:39Trish suggested they did the calendar

0:12:39 > 0:12:41to take Angela's mind off things,

0:12:41 > 0:12:43as much as raising money for blood cancer,

0:12:43 > 0:12:46which is the third-biggest cancer killer in the UK.

0:12:46 > 0:12:47The night was set.

0:12:47 > 0:12:51We went with our dressing gowns, slippers and a bottle of red wine.

0:12:51 > 0:12:54It's great, isn't it? You couldn't make it up, could you?

0:12:54 > 0:12:59Angela and Trish recruited nine other volunteers, all WI members.

0:12:59 > 0:13:02Local artist Terry Logan, the husband of one of the ladies, Linda,

0:13:02 > 0:13:04volunteered to take the pictures.

0:13:07 > 0:13:11And Linda had the fire stoked up so we wouldn't get cold

0:13:11 > 0:13:15and all the curtains closed and the door locked, you know,

0:13:15 > 0:13:17- in case one of the neighbours popped in.- Yeah.

0:13:17 > 0:13:19Was there a lot of nerves or a lot of laughter?

0:13:19 > 0:13:23A lot of laughter. A lot of laughter and...

0:13:23 > 0:13:24Just what you needed.

0:13:24 > 0:13:26Yeah, just what I needed. And...

0:13:28 > 0:13:31You know, I'd gone and I didn't take any pearls or anything,

0:13:31 > 0:13:33I just wore whatever there was.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36And took my clothes off and they just said,

0:13:36 > 0:13:39because I could play the piano, they just said, "Sit here.

0:13:39 > 0:13:42- "Play Jerusalem."- Brilliant.

0:13:47 > 0:13:50So you've finally guessed where we're going now?

0:13:50 > 0:13:52Probably, we're going to Cracoe.

0:13:55 > 0:13:57- Probably the pub.- Could be.

0:13:58 > 0:14:01Cracoe is a village in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales.

0:14:01 > 0:14:03It's where Angela and John had their family home.

0:14:03 > 0:14:06It's also where the calendar was created.

0:14:07 > 0:14:09- So you guessed right.- Yes.

0:14:09 > 0:14:13- What's the pub in the village? - The Devonshire Arms in Cracoe.

0:14:13 > 0:14:15- Shall we head in?- Yeah.

0:14:15 > 0:14:17- No point standing out in the rain. - No.

0:14:19 > 0:14:21When Angela and her friends printed the calendar,

0:14:21 > 0:14:23they arranged a launch.

0:14:23 > 0:14:26They only expected a few friends to turn up.

0:14:26 > 0:14:27Even in their wildest dreams,

0:14:27 > 0:14:30they couldn't have imagined what was going to happen.

0:14:30 > 0:14:33The WI women were about to go global.

0:14:34 > 0:14:36This is the room where we launched our calendar.

0:14:36 > 0:14:38What was that like, that day?

0:14:38 > 0:14:42Well, that morning, I woke up to Sarah Kennedy talking about us.

0:14:42 > 0:14:45- On Radio 2?- Yeah. And then Terry Wogan.

0:14:45 > 0:14:47And then I thought, "Oh, my goodness."

0:14:47 > 0:14:50And then I rang Trish and I said, "Everyone's talking about us."

0:14:50 > 0:14:53She said, "You want to see the pub car park.

0:14:53 > 0:14:56"It's full of white vans with satellite dishes on the top."

0:15:01 > 0:15:03A simple press release had caught the eye and imagination

0:15:03 > 0:15:06of news editors all over the country.

0:15:06 > 0:15:09It's called the Alternative WI Calendar.

0:15:09 > 0:15:12It features 11 members of Rylstone and District WI.

0:15:12 > 0:15:16The UK's media were desperate to see the middle-aged women,

0:15:16 > 0:15:19who were taking their clothes off for a risque WI calendar.

0:15:19 > 0:15:22- What went through your mind? - "Oh, what have we done?"

0:15:22 > 0:15:24I thought, "What have we done?"

0:15:24 > 0:15:28By lunchtime, we were on the local BBC.

0:15:28 > 0:15:32And at evening, we were on the six o'clock BBC News.

0:15:32 > 0:15:34- Goodness me. - It was just incredible.

0:15:34 > 0:15:36What was the atmosphere like in this room?

0:15:36 > 0:15:38Well, everybody was just so excited.

0:15:38 > 0:15:41You know, and it's not what they expected.

0:15:42 > 0:15:43- Shall we get into the car? - Yes, let's go.

0:15:59 > 0:16:03By the end of 1999, eight months after it was first launched,

0:16:03 > 0:16:0788,000 copies of the calendar had been sold in the UK.

0:16:07 > 0:16:09The WI friends had become household names.

0:16:09 > 0:16:12Voted women of the year, they even went to Buckingham Palace

0:16:12 > 0:16:16to present copies to Her Majesty the Queen and the Queen Mother.

0:16:18 > 0:16:20Our last stop is Kettlewell,

0:16:20 > 0:16:22the setting for the blockbuster hit Calendar Girls,

0:16:22 > 0:16:25the movie based on Angela's powerful story.

0:16:26 > 0:16:28- Shall we go and have a little sit down?- Yeah, let's.

0:16:30 > 0:16:32The year after the calendar was launched in the UK,

0:16:32 > 0:16:34it was released in America.

0:16:34 > 0:16:36240,000 copies were sold.

0:16:36 > 0:16:39The women had become international stars.

0:16:40 > 0:16:43I was getting phone calls from Hollywood.

0:16:43 > 0:16:46Which sounds wonderful, but it's quite scary,

0:16:46 > 0:16:49when you've no idea, you know, how to cope with it.

0:16:50 > 0:16:53Studios were fighting over Angela's story.

0:16:53 > 0:16:55Eventually, she, along with five of her WI friends,

0:16:55 > 0:16:57agreed to have a film made

0:16:57 > 0:16:59but set strict terms.

0:16:59 > 0:17:02A percentage of the profits had to go to Bloodwise,

0:17:02 > 0:17:04the blood cancer charity they supported.

0:17:04 > 0:17:07It also had to be set in the Dales with an all-British cast.

0:17:07 > 0:17:10Angela, an ordinary woman from Yorkshire,

0:17:10 > 0:17:13was about to get a phone call that dreams are made of.

0:17:13 > 0:17:17An A-list film star was to play her in the movie.

0:17:17 > 0:17:19The phone went one day and I answered the phone

0:17:19 > 0:17:22and this person said, "Hello, Angela, it's Julie here."

0:17:22 > 0:17:25And I went, "Julie? Do I know a Julie?"

0:17:25 > 0:17:26I said, "I'm sorry?"

0:17:26 > 0:17:29And she said, "It's Julie Walters."

0:17:29 > 0:17:31Well, I nearly stood to attention.

0:17:33 > 0:17:35She said, "What are you doing on Thursday?"

0:17:35 > 0:17:37Well, if I'd been doing anything, I would have cancelled it, wouldn't I?

0:17:37 > 0:17:42- Of course you would have.- And she said she'd like to come and meet us.

0:17:42 > 0:17:44And I baked scones for them.

0:17:44 > 0:17:47- But I didn't do it for you, honey. - No, thanks for reinforcing that fact.

0:17:47 > 0:17:49Yeah, lovely. Cheers!

0:17:49 > 0:17:54But then, after Julie came, they all came.

0:17:54 > 0:17:56And they were just like friends.

0:17:57 > 0:17:59Julie Walters played Angela,

0:17:59 > 0:18:01whilst Helen Mirren took on the role of Trish.

0:18:01 > 0:18:04The delightfully funny film was released in 2003

0:18:04 > 0:18:07and was an instant hit.

0:18:08 > 0:18:09Off!

0:18:09 > 0:18:12Off! Off!

0:18:12 > 0:18:15Off! Off! Off!

0:18:15 > 0:18:16Off!

0:18:23 > 0:18:26For months, the girls travelled the world promoting the film

0:18:26 > 0:18:28and their charity.

0:18:28 > 0:18:30Everywhere they went, they wore a sunflower

0:18:30 > 0:18:33in memory of Angela's husband John.

0:18:33 > 0:18:37Look where the ladies of the Women's Institute have been tonight.

0:18:37 > 0:18:39A world premiere with red-carpet treatment.

0:18:39 > 0:18:42We don't think we're stars. We just dip in and out of this.

0:18:42 > 0:18:43We don't think this is our lives.

0:18:43 > 0:18:45This is something we do now and then

0:18:45 > 0:18:47and then we go back home and that's where we want to be.

0:18:47 > 0:18:49I mean, we still do the washing on a Monday

0:18:49 > 0:18:52and the ironing on a Tuesday and we have to go to the supermarket

0:18:52 > 0:18:55and no-one kind of makes a fuss of us. And it's good.

0:19:00 > 0:19:04We thought, after the film, there couldn't be anything else.

0:19:04 > 0:19:06And then there was the stage play.

0:19:06 > 0:19:09- And then we thought, "That must be it."- Yeah.

0:19:09 > 0:19:13- And then, David Pugh came and said...- He's the producer, yeah?

0:19:13 > 0:19:16Yeah, the producer of the stage play, as well.

0:19:16 > 0:19:20..that Tim Firth and Gary Barlow had been writing a musical.

0:19:22 > 0:19:23Well, what do you say?

0:19:23 > 0:19:25Heavens...

0:19:25 > 0:19:27But do you know what the great thing about it is?

0:19:27 > 0:19:31As you say, the reason you did it in the first place is to raise money.

0:19:31 > 0:19:32And you've raised how much?

0:19:32 > 0:19:34- Nearly five million. - Nearly five million.

0:19:34 > 0:19:38And the amount of hearts that you've touched along the way.

0:19:38 > 0:19:39- Yeah.- Incredible.

0:19:39 > 0:19:41Including this one today, I've got to say.

0:19:41 > 0:19:43I've so enjoyed taking you back, I really have.

0:19:43 > 0:19:46And has doing all this, you know, all the places we've been,

0:19:46 > 0:19:49- has it made you want to help someone even more?- Yes.

0:19:49 > 0:19:51That would be really good.

0:19:51 > 0:19:56If I could help somebody who was in my position, just a little bit,

0:19:56 > 0:20:00just give them a little bit back, that would be fantastic.

0:20:00 > 0:20:02Well, listen, I'll see you in a week or so.

0:20:02 > 0:20:05- And thank you for everything. - It's all right.

0:20:05 > 0:20:07- It's been great seeing you. - And great to see you.

0:20:07 > 0:20:09And I forgive you for not baking me a cake.

0:20:09 > 0:20:11- Just about!- Next time.

0:20:11 > 0:20:13Oh, yeah, promises, promises!

0:20:18 > 0:20:20Wow, what an inspirational day.

0:20:20 > 0:20:24I've thoroughly enjoyed meeting Angela. She's such a ray of light.

0:20:24 > 0:20:26And, you know, what she and her fellow Calendar Girls achieved

0:20:26 > 0:20:28is astounding.

0:20:28 > 0:20:30They are life-savers through the money that they raised

0:20:30 > 0:20:31for their charity.

0:20:31 > 0:20:34And taking Angela back on this journey into her past

0:20:34 > 0:20:35has been moving.

0:20:35 > 0:20:38But it's also focused her mind to really want to help someone today,

0:20:38 > 0:20:42someone who's in a similar position to the one she was in 18 years ago,

0:20:42 > 0:20:44when she had the support of her friends.

0:20:44 > 0:20:48And we think we've found somebody who really fits the bill.

0:20:52 > 0:20:55Katie Moore lives in Hampton, Middlesex,

0:20:55 > 0:20:57with her son Archie, who's five.

0:20:57 > 0:20:59Three years ago,

0:20:59 > 0:21:02Katie lost her husband and soul mate Tom to leukaemia.

0:21:02 > 0:21:03He was just 35.

0:21:03 > 0:21:06Angela is about to meet Katie for the first time

0:21:06 > 0:21:08to see if there's a way she can help her.

0:21:12 > 0:21:15I'm expecting to learn lots about Katie.

0:21:15 > 0:21:18I think, once we get chatting to each other,

0:21:18 > 0:21:22we'll probably find out that we've got a lot of things in common.

0:21:22 > 0:21:24So it'll be good, I think.

0:21:24 > 0:21:26I've never been short of a conversation.

0:21:28 > 0:21:30Katie believes we're making a programme

0:21:30 > 0:21:32about losing a loved one to cancer.

0:21:32 > 0:21:34She's completely in the dark

0:21:34 > 0:21:37that she might be in line for a generous gift from Angela.

0:21:37 > 0:21:39Lovely to see you. Can I come in? Thank you.

0:21:42 > 0:21:44- This way?- Yes, straight through. - Thank you.

0:21:46 > 0:21:49It's really nice to meet you. You have a story to tell.

0:21:49 > 0:21:52And I have a story to tell.

0:21:52 > 0:21:55- So I think...- Unfortunately. - That's why we got together.

0:21:55 > 0:21:57So you tell me how you met.

0:21:57 > 0:21:59Tom and I were on the same course,

0:21:59 > 0:22:02so we both did sports studies with business.

0:22:02 > 0:22:03And a very long story short,

0:22:03 > 0:22:08we got together towards the end of our final year.

0:22:08 > 0:22:11And obviously, we were together until he passed away at 35.

0:22:11 > 0:22:13- 35...- Mm.

0:22:13 > 0:22:14That's very early.

0:22:15 > 0:22:18Katie and Tom were studying at Southampton University

0:22:18 > 0:22:20in the late '90s.

0:22:20 > 0:22:22They married in 2010.

0:22:22 > 0:22:24A year later, they had baby Archie.

0:22:26 > 0:22:29Just like Angela's John, Tom was seemingly fit and healthy.

0:22:29 > 0:22:32He loved sport, playing football every week.

0:22:32 > 0:22:36He'd also landed his dream job working for the Premier League.

0:22:36 > 0:22:40But in August 2013, he started complaining of feeling ill.

0:22:40 > 0:22:43He was always getting the flu. He would have night sweats.

0:22:43 > 0:22:45He would be coughing.

0:22:45 > 0:22:48- Probably very similar to what you witnessed.- Yeah.

0:22:48 > 0:22:51The GP was just giving him antibiotics

0:22:51 > 0:22:54or telling him to go home and rest.

0:22:54 > 0:22:58So I called a private GP and I got him a blood test.

0:22:58 > 0:22:59We took the blood tests.

0:22:59 > 0:23:02I absolutely didn't think it would be what it was.

0:23:02 > 0:23:07And I got a call from the GP to say could I bring Tom in.

0:23:07 > 0:23:11And when the word "leukaemia" came out of her mouth, I...

0:23:13 > 0:23:16- I don't know, just glass shattered. - Mm.

0:23:17 > 0:23:19He was in pieces.

0:23:19 > 0:23:22I was in a sheer panic. I just thought, "You've got this wrong.

0:23:22 > 0:23:24"You've absolutely got this wrong."

0:23:27 > 0:23:30Tom was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia, or AML,

0:23:30 > 0:23:34an aggressive form of blood cancer requiring immediate treatment.

0:23:35 > 0:23:38Two days before his 35th birthday, he started chemo.

0:23:38 > 0:23:40And you're in hospital for four weeks

0:23:40 > 0:23:42and then he was allowed home for a week.

0:23:42 > 0:23:45And then it would happen again and again.

0:23:45 > 0:23:48And we were positive and we just thought we'd get through it.

0:23:48 > 0:23:50Tom underwent gruelling chemo.

0:23:50 > 0:23:53After three rounds, he was approved for stem cell treatment.

0:23:53 > 0:23:57A donor had been found. It looked as if he was going to recover.

0:23:57 > 0:24:01But then, after a blood test, his consultant called.

0:24:01 > 0:24:05He said, "Can I speak to Tom? Because we've seen

0:24:05 > 0:24:08- "irregular cells in his blood." - Yeah.

0:24:08 > 0:24:11And basically, he'd relapsed.

0:24:11 > 0:24:14And he then underwent his fourth chemo.

0:24:14 > 0:24:16And then he caught an infection.

0:24:17 > 0:24:19And...

0:24:20 > 0:24:22..he went to intensive care.

0:24:22 > 0:24:27And in intensive care, Tom just deteriorated and deteriorated.

0:24:28 > 0:24:30Eventually, I got told that...

0:24:31 > 0:24:32..Tom wasn't going to make it.

0:24:36 > 0:24:39So how long had he had it? How...?

0:24:39 > 0:24:42- Five months.- Five months?- Yeah.

0:24:42 > 0:24:45Because it's so similar, you know?

0:24:45 > 0:24:48- He had the night sweats. We thought he had flu.- Yeah.

0:24:48 > 0:24:51And he had four lots of chemo, too.

0:24:51 > 0:24:53But then, eventually, erm...

0:24:54 > 0:24:57..it went into his brain.

0:24:57 > 0:25:02And he couldn't stand up, he couldn't walk.

0:25:02 > 0:25:07And the consultant said, probably, he would never have walked again.

0:25:07 > 0:25:11And John heard that and he just said he'd had enough.

0:25:11 > 0:25:14He didn't want anything else.

0:25:16 > 0:25:18And that's it.

0:25:21 > 0:25:24- So we've got a lot in common. - Yeah, we have.

0:25:24 > 0:25:26Five months.

0:25:26 > 0:25:28So quick from being...

0:25:28 > 0:25:30well.

0:25:30 > 0:25:32- And...hard to take.- Yeah.

0:25:34 > 0:25:36While Angela is with Katie,

0:25:36 > 0:25:39I've arranged to meet one of Katie's best friends - Debbie.

0:25:41 > 0:25:42- Hi. How are you?- Come in.

0:25:42 > 0:25:44- Nice to meet you.- Nice to meet you.

0:25:44 > 0:25:45- Please, come in.- Thanks.

0:25:45 > 0:25:47I'll take my coat off.

0:25:50 > 0:25:52It must have been awful for you as a friend seeing her go through that.

0:25:52 > 0:25:56It was terrible, because her and Tom were just one of these couples

0:25:56 > 0:25:58that we had up on a pedestal.

0:25:58 > 0:26:01He just was a very well-rounded, thoughtful and kind man.

0:26:01 > 0:26:03Just gave her what she needed.

0:26:03 > 0:26:05They were thinking about another child.

0:26:05 > 0:26:08When we got the news that he had died, it was just...

0:26:08 > 0:26:11a kind of punch to the stomach for all of us.

0:26:11 > 0:26:15- You don't expect it, do you? - Not at that age, no.

0:26:15 > 0:26:18She'd sent us all a message saying, "My angel has gone."

0:26:18 > 0:26:21And she didn't say any more than that.

0:26:28 > 0:26:31It's just so unexpected in life.

0:26:31 > 0:26:35And I just remember that day, we went round the day after he died.

0:26:35 > 0:26:37And just going into the room she was in

0:26:37 > 0:26:41and she was under the covers and just broken.

0:26:41 > 0:26:44And just having to hold her was just...

0:26:44 > 0:26:46It was really sad.

0:26:46 > 0:26:49How has she been since then, then?

0:26:49 > 0:26:52- Sorry...- No, it's OK. It's obviously still raw, isn't it?

0:26:52 > 0:26:54- You know?- Yeah.

0:26:54 > 0:26:56She's been amazing.

0:26:57 > 0:26:59- She's strong, isn't she?- Yeah.

0:26:59 > 0:27:01Just...

0:27:01 > 0:27:03- I'm so proud of her.- Yeah.

0:27:09 > 0:27:12I think the first year of Tom passing away was a complete blur.

0:27:12 > 0:27:16And I even look back and think, "What did I do in that first year?"

0:27:16 > 0:27:19I absolutely don't know how I got through it.

0:27:20 > 0:27:22And the hardest thing was when...

0:27:22 > 0:27:24I mean, yes, I was busy

0:27:24 > 0:27:26and we were here, there and everywhere

0:27:26 > 0:27:29doing everything with the calendar and the film,

0:27:29 > 0:27:33but, you know, the other girls, when we'd gone anywhere,

0:27:33 > 0:27:36- we were on a train and all their husbands met them.- Yeah.

0:27:37 > 0:27:39Yeah, I've been there.

0:27:39 > 0:27:42- You know, and you just get off and you know there's no-one there.- Yeah.

0:27:46 > 0:27:49As well as dealing with her grief,

0:27:49 > 0:27:51Katie was left trying to do the best by little Archie,

0:28:54 > 0:28:57Katie works in fashion, an industry she loves.

0:28:57 > 0:28:58But since Tom died,

0:28:58 > 0:29:01she's had to juggle her career to look after Archie.

0:29:01 > 0:29:04While she takes a break from full-time working, just like Angela,

0:29:18 > 0:29:20It will happen, I'm sure.

0:29:21 > 0:29:25Angela is trying to think if there is a way she might help Katie.

0:30:14 > 0:30:17and it will just be quite overwhelming for her

0:30:17 > 0:30:18to take it all in,

0:30:18 > 0:30:21- because she doesn't feel she deserves anything special.- No.

0:30:23 > 0:30:26- Well, she's going to get something special.- I know. It's amazing.

0:30:26 > 0:30:28Hey, listen, I'll leave you to it.

0:30:44 > 0:30:46And, yeah, it was...

0:30:46 > 0:30:51I didn't think they'd be so similar. But it was amazing, yeah.

0:30:51 > 0:30:52And we both...

0:30:52 > 0:30:54felt, you know?

0:30:54 > 0:30:57You just feel what you went through and what it was like.

0:30:57 > 0:30:59And it was good to talk about it.

0:31:29 > 0:31:30Well, vaguely.

0:31:30 > 0:31:36Yeah, well, I went to meet this girl yesterday called Katie,

0:31:36 > 0:31:38who's only 35,

0:32:15 > 0:32:19Angela is wondering if she can help Katie achieve her dream

0:32:34 > 0:32:36- And we were always so focused, weren't we...- Mm.

0:32:50 > 0:32:54Yeah, even though it's hard to do, it was something positive,

0:32:54 > 0:32:55- and in John's memory.- Yeah.

0:32:55 > 0:32:57And he would have been proud.

0:33:28 > 0:33:31I'm also excited to hear how her meeting with Katie went.

0:33:31 > 0:33:34I reckon Angela is the right person to help Katie.

0:33:34 > 0:33:36The million-dollar question is...how.

0:33:37 > 0:33:39Angela's waiting for me just around the corner

0:33:39 > 0:33:43from where the musical of her story is playing in London's Theatreland.

0:33:44 > 0:33:46Katie and her friends are on their way to see the show,

0:33:59 > 0:34:01And we really got on well.

0:34:01 > 0:34:03Because I met her friend.

0:34:03 > 0:34:05And one of her best friends was saying that, you know,

0:34:05 > 0:34:07explained, of course, what she's gone through,

0:34:07 > 0:34:09which is absolutely horrendous.

0:34:09 > 0:34:11But also, you know, I thought of you instantly,

0:34:24 > 0:34:26for five months. Like John.

0:34:26 > 0:34:29So we had so much in common to talk about

0:34:29 > 0:34:31and how we felt and everything.

0:34:31 > 0:34:33So how are you going to help?

0:34:33 > 0:34:36Well, her job has been in fashion.

0:34:37 > 0:34:44- And she had thought about doing a fashion show in memory of Tom.- OK.

0:35:08 > 0:35:11how they can best help young widows.

0:35:11 > 0:35:12So it's just brilliant.

0:35:12 > 0:35:14- So she'll be working with a whole team?- Yeah, it couldn't be better.

0:35:14 > 0:35:18And me, as well. I'm going to help her. And the other Calendar Girls.

0:35:18 > 0:35:21- Oh, really?- So we're going to be like mentors for her.

0:35:21 > 0:35:23- Oh, that's amazing. - So, it's good.

0:35:23 > 0:35:26You know, I'm hoping it's going to give her something to focus on.

0:35:26 > 0:35:27Something to work for.

0:35:27 > 0:35:31And feel in a real good... feel good for herself.

0:35:31 > 0:35:34Talking to her friends, that's exactly what she needed, really.

0:35:34 > 0:35:35Yeah, yeah.

0:35:37 > 0:35:41- the fashion and also the charity work.- Yeah.

0:35:41 > 0:35:43- Oh, fantastic. - So I'm sure she'll love it.

0:35:43 > 0:35:46- Have you put all your thoughts down in a letter?- I have.- Right, OK.

0:35:46 > 0:35:50- So the musical starts a little bit later.- Yes.

0:35:50 > 0:35:52I reckon, at the end of the musical,

0:35:52 > 0:35:54- we should go on stage and surprise her. What do you think?- Yeah.

0:35:54 > 0:35:56Yeah!

0:36:21 > 0:36:24She has no idea that, as soon as the performance ends,

0:36:24 > 0:36:27we'll be taking to the stage to surprise her.

0:36:33 > 0:36:35It's just five minutes until curtain call.

0:36:39 > 0:36:41- I'm nervous, as well. - I know, but excited.

0:36:41 > 0:36:42So they're about to bow.

0:36:42 > 0:36:45- So the minute they've done their first bow, we go on stage.- Yes, OK.

0:36:45 > 0:36:48- I'm ready for it.- Look at you. You're all, "Oh...!" Let's go.

0:42:01 > 0:42:03Yeah, it's amazing. And...

0:42:03 > 0:42:04Yeah.

0:42:06 > 0:42:09And I don't think she had any idea, really, what was happening.

0:42:09 > 0:42:12And I think she's kind of, you know, taking it all in.

0:42:12 > 0:42:14It'll take a while, I think.

0:42:14 > 0:42:16But, yeah, it was really, really good.

0:42:16 > 0:42:18I nearly didn't cry. But then I did a bit.

0:42:18 > 0:42:20But it was very emotional.

0:42:24 > 0:42:25- Yeah.- Just so special.

0:42:25 > 0:42:27She didn't expect it at all.

0:42:27 > 0:42:30I think her and Angela had such a special connection

0:42:30 > 0:42:33that she gets why this is a really important step for her.

0:42:33 > 0:42:35And she will do amazingly with the fashion show.

0:42:35 > 0:42:37- Fashion's in good hands.- Definitely!

0:42:37 > 0:42:39It's an absolutely amazing opportunity for her and her life,

0:42:39 > 0:42:42and coming out of something so horrendous this happens, so...

0:42:42 > 0:42:44And Tom would be so proud.

0:42:48 > 0:42:52Well, what a privilege it was to see the joy on Katie's face just then.

0:42:52 > 0:42:54You know, Angela knew instinctively

0:42:54 > 0:42:56what Katie needed at this point in her life.

0:42:56 > 0:42:58And she was completely right.

0:42:58 > 0:43:00Combining Katie's love of fashion

0:43:00 > 0:43:03with a charity that she cares so deeply about was spot-on.

0:43:03 > 0:43:05And now Katie is going to be mentored

0:43:05 > 0:43:07by the Calendar Girls themselves.

0:43:07 > 0:43:09Well, that's the icing on the cake.

0:43:09 > 0:43:11How can I do a programme involving the WI

0:43:11 > 0:43:14and not even get to enjoy a slice of cake?

0:43:14 > 0:43:16Well, as they say, onwards and upwards.
