0:00:02 > 0:00:04The Pembrokeshire coast path.

0:00:04 > 0:00:09For 186 miles, it winds its way through secret coves,

0:00:09 > 0:00:14past majestic beaches and over awe-inspiring cliffs.

0:00:14 > 0:00:16It regenerates our batteries.

0:00:16 > 0:00:19You can get out of the rat race and you can just walk.

0:00:19 > 0:00:22God's own country here. I'm very lucky.

0:00:22 > 0:00:24Even on a winter's day, when it's cold and miserable,

0:00:24 > 0:00:26this still looks beautiful.

0:00:26 > 0:00:30Throughout the hot summer of 2013, we've followed

0:00:30 > 0:00:34the lives of the locals who live, work and play in this Welsh paradise.

0:00:35 > 0:00:36Good boy.

0:00:36 > 0:00:37This is their summer.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40That's the first lobster we've seen.

0:00:40 > 0:00:42This is their story.

0:00:52 > 0:00:56Coming up, Fishguard gets ready for a knitted makeover.

0:00:56 > 0:00:58I haven't got enough hands.

0:01:00 > 0:01:01Nat has her hen night...

0:01:05 > 0:01:08And Buzz takes the loo with a view for a spin.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11- Oh, it's made a deposit. - It's a test run.

0:01:15 > 0:01:19It's July. The Pembrokeshire coast is bathed in sunshine

0:01:19 > 0:01:20and the seas are still.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26But the waters are about to witness an epic battle...

0:01:29 > 0:01:32..one that has raged on for generations.

0:01:32 > 0:01:33Come on.

0:01:33 > 0:01:37This is longboat racing. Open sea rowing against the elements,

0:01:37 > 0:01:40popular all along the Pembrokeshire coast,

0:01:40 > 0:01:43and competition between rival villages and teams is fierce.

0:01:47 > 0:01:48Keep the length.

0:01:48 > 0:01:51Especially between old foes, Newport and Solva.

0:01:54 > 0:01:58Both teams are training flat out for one of the biggest events

0:01:58 > 0:02:00of the year, the Dinas Head Challenge,

0:02:00 > 0:02:03a race around the coast from Fishguard to Newport.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09Put your backs into it. Come on. Push!

0:02:09 > 0:02:13And organising the race is down to Newport coach, Pete Fletcher.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16Let's look good on the day.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19The Dinas Head race started about 15 years ago.

0:02:19 > 0:02:24It can be quite a demanding race, because it is eight miles flat out

0:02:24 > 0:02:28and you can have to endure some pretty rough water

0:02:28 > 0:02:32as you enter the bar into the estuary of Newport.

0:02:32 > 0:02:34It's a timed race, so they don't exactly know

0:02:34 > 0:02:37whether they're winning or what part they are in the race.

0:02:37 > 0:02:38It's very tactical.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42Come on!

0:02:42 > 0:02:45As Pete knocks his Newport team into shape,

0:02:45 > 0:02:4920 miles down the coast, Solva cox Mike Miles is getting his crew

0:02:49 > 0:02:52ready for another training session.

0:02:52 > 0:02:56There's always been a lot of rivalry between Solva and Newport,

0:02:56 > 0:03:02and then in the early '80s, load of Solva boys commissioned a boat,

0:03:02 > 0:03:07the five boys, specifically, to beat the Newport rowers

0:03:07 > 0:03:11and managed to wipe them out completely.

0:03:11 > 0:03:16I'm pretty sure that's it over there. Beautiful boat.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20Today's competition rowing boats are made of fibreglass

0:03:20 > 0:03:24instead of wood, and are called Pembrokeshire Longboats.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27With about 30 teams expected in the Dinas Head Challenge,

0:03:27 > 0:03:30local honour is still at stake.

0:03:30 > 0:03:33But Mike has some rowing novices in his crew.

0:03:33 > 0:03:38Three, four, pick it up.

0:03:38 > 0:03:43We've got Mia now who's rowing in bow,

0:03:43 > 0:03:45we've got Jasmine in front of her

0:03:45 > 0:03:50and I don't think that Newport are going to have a cat's hope in hell.

0:03:52 > 0:03:56Up in Fishguard, in the north of the county, bizarre plans are afoot.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11The town is going to be given a knitted face-lift,

0:04:11 > 0:04:15and the woman behind the project is local artist Lizzie Stonhold.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18Granny graffiti started in America.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21It's an urban way of covering objects.

0:04:21 > 0:04:26Rather than it being painted or altered in some way,

0:04:26 > 0:04:30a knitted cover is something, kind of, quite cosy.

0:04:33 > 0:04:35But in order to pull off her ambitious plans

0:04:35 > 0:04:37to cover Fishguard in granny graffiti,

0:04:37 > 0:04:41first Lizzie has to persuade more locals to take up knitting.

0:04:41 > 0:04:45My aim is to get absolutely everybody in Fishguard knitting.

0:04:47 > 0:04:49I haven't got enough hands.

0:04:49 > 0:04:53Right, OK, got you. I think.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55Next stop, the lifeboat crew, to try

0:04:55 > 0:04:58and rope more non-knitters into to the project.

0:04:58 > 0:05:02Thank you all for coming today. I wasn't expecting so many of you.

0:05:02 > 0:05:03This is awesome.

0:05:03 > 0:05:07We're going to pretty much just cover all of the town in knitting.

0:05:07 > 0:05:10You're not the only ones who are getting involved, so don't panic.

0:05:10 > 0:05:13It's just if we can get you having a go at knitting.

0:05:13 > 0:05:17It's just putting Fishguard on the map in a really positive light,

0:05:17 > 0:05:19showing its good community spirit.

0:05:20 > 0:05:23Pull it through the stitch. Wrap it round the back.

0:05:23 > 0:05:26Most of the crew, like lifeboat man Roger Strawbridge,

0:05:26 > 0:05:29are complete knitting novices.

0:05:29 > 0:05:32I'm struggling a bit, you know? I'm in a bit of a twist.

0:05:32 > 0:05:36These are all your individual stitches, and you get your

0:05:36 > 0:05:38right-hand needle and you stick it in through the front

0:05:38 > 0:05:40of the first stitch.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43Well done.

0:05:43 > 0:05:47It's really important, I think, to involve the RNLI in a community

0:05:47 > 0:05:53project because, you know, the coastline is our community. It's really good.

0:05:53 > 0:05:55This is nice.

0:05:55 > 0:05:59For Lizzie, her granny graffiti project is about more

0:05:59 > 0:06:02than brightening up Fishguard, it's a personal quest.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07I've found it really difficult to get a job which is

0:06:07 > 0:06:09more of a career in the area.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12I think that is likewise for lots of our friends.

0:06:12 > 0:06:16There's so many people applying for jobs that you need to have

0:06:16 > 0:06:19something, you know, to make yourself recognised.

0:06:20 > 0:06:24Life as an artist isn't paying the bills, so Lizzie's created the

0:06:24 > 0:06:29project to bolster her profile and CV, in a bid to get a full-time job.

0:06:29 > 0:06:33But for now, she's not getting paid a penny and things are tight.

0:06:33 > 0:06:37We were on benefits - well, we still are on benefits.

0:06:37 > 0:06:40Financially, I suppose, we can't really afford to do it,

0:06:40 > 0:06:43but I see it as some sort of investment.

0:06:43 > 0:06:47If I don't invest into my art and I don't invest into our future,

0:06:47 > 0:06:49we'll never get anywhere.

0:06:52 > 0:06:56But Lizzie has a huge mountain to climb.

0:06:56 > 0:07:01She plans to cover over 160 objects in and around Fishguard in knitting,

0:07:01 > 0:07:05that will take over 1,000 balls of wool and involve over 500 knitters.

0:07:08 > 0:07:10The project has a long way to go,

0:07:10 > 0:07:14but so far the people of Fishguard seem to be buying into it.

0:07:14 > 0:07:17- I've nearly done a row here. - You have.

0:07:17 > 0:07:18Look at that, eh?

0:07:24 > 0:07:27Down the coast at Treginnis Farm near St Davids,

0:07:27 > 0:07:31Nat James and her sister Mel are getting ready for a big night out.

0:07:35 > 0:07:37In a few days' time, Nat will be marrying her fiance, Dan,

0:07:37 > 0:07:40at her dream marquee wedding, held on the farm.

0:07:42 > 0:07:46But before that, Nat has to say goodbye to unmarried life in style

0:07:46 > 0:07:48with a hen night to remember.

0:07:49 > 0:07:52It's minging.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57As the girls concoct in the kitchen, mum Kath is trialling

0:07:57 > 0:07:58her make-up for the wedding.

0:08:01 > 0:08:04Just nice to have someone else do it, actually.

0:08:04 > 0:08:06Oh, God, my turkey neck now.

0:08:08 > 0:08:11- I've got flabby eyelids. - You haven't.- I have.- At all.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14We're going to go into St Davids

0:08:14 > 0:08:16and meet up with all the other girls,

0:08:16 > 0:08:21and just carry it on in The Farmers - drinks and there will be a few nibbles.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24The boys, they've been out all day.

0:08:24 > 0:08:26They're planning on going to The Bishops, I think.

0:08:26 > 0:08:30We're in The Farmers, they're in The Bishops, which should be nice.

0:08:30 > 0:08:32Oh, lovely, Nat.

0:08:36 > 0:08:39Dad Les is next in the queue.

0:08:39 > 0:08:42- Going to start on me? - I'm a beautician, not a magician.

0:08:46 > 0:08:50Made up and revved up, the girls head off to hit

0:08:50 > 0:08:52the bright lights of St Davids city.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02Up at their garden centre near Newport, Pete and Lesley Fletcher

0:09:02 > 0:09:04are busy trying to juggle running their business

0:09:04 > 0:09:09and organising the Dinas Head rowing race that is just one week away.

0:09:11 > 0:09:14I wonder whether anybody will beat the record time.

0:09:14 > 0:09:1955 minutes and 59 seconds. Aberdyfi Men in August 2008.

0:09:19 > 0:09:21There's a bit of a tactical race,

0:09:21 > 0:09:24because you might be in front of a boat, but you won't know if you're

0:09:24 > 0:09:27actually beating that boat, because they won't know

0:09:27 > 0:09:28what time they started.

0:09:28 > 0:09:31Everybody has their own unique times. You have to be very, very careful.

0:09:31 > 0:09:34We have three stopwatches going.

0:09:34 > 0:09:37If anything goes wrong with the time thing, we're finished.

0:09:37 > 0:09:39We can start running for the hills.

0:09:40 > 0:09:43Solva team cox Mike Miles is also busy with his

0:09:43 > 0:09:47building company, but it's a miracle that Mike is here at all.

0:09:48 > 0:09:5213 years ago, Mike was told he had weeks to live

0:09:52 > 0:09:53with advanced lung cancer.

0:09:54 > 0:09:58But he researched the condition and persuaded a consultant to do

0:09:58 > 0:10:01invasive surgery, removing one of his lungs.

0:10:03 > 0:10:06I've always been one for arguing.

0:10:06 > 0:10:10Arguing with people if I feel like it.

0:10:10 > 0:10:12And on that particular occasion

0:10:12 > 0:10:15it was definitely worth having the argument.

0:10:15 > 0:10:19A long time ago, I had done a degree in what's basically

0:10:19 > 0:10:24biochemical genetics, which doesn't go amiss in relation to lung cancer.

0:10:25 > 0:10:31I only dwelt on what might happen for a few minutes,

0:10:31 > 0:10:37because it's counterproductive, and I'm quite good at

0:10:37 > 0:10:40sticking things I'd rather not think of to the corner of the mind.

0:10:41 > 0:10:45But every time you wake up, you think, "Oh, I've woken up,

0:10:45 > 0:10:47"that's a good start to the day."

0:10:50 > 0:10:5313 years later, and Mike is still a driving force

0:10:53 > 0:10:55behind the Solva Rowing Club.

0:11:00 > 0:11:04No time to rest, though, as rivals Solva and Newport will

0:11:04 > 0:11:08go head-to-head in the Dinas Head Challenge in just a few days' time.

0:11:09 > 0:11:12I think Newport should be quaking in their boots.

0:11:12 > 0:11:15I might even be tempted to put it more strongly than that.

0:11:22 > 0:11:25It's Nat James' hen night,

0:11:25 > 0:11:28and the girls gather at the Farmers Arms in St Davids.

0:11:29 > 0:11:31Cheers, everybody.

0:11:35 > 0:11:38As the drinks start to flow, Mel decides to get the party going

0:11:38 > 0:11:39with some forfeits.

0:11:41 > 0:11:44Put lipstick on the closest guy to you.

0:11:52 > 0:11:53Is that enough?

0:11:53 > 0:11:57- One...- I had to propose to a bloke.

0:11:57 > 0:11:59- Two...- His wife wasn't very happy.

0:12:01 > 0:12:02Had to let that one go.

0:12:08 > 0:12:11But as the girls get stuck into their challenges,

0:12:11 > 0:12:13some unexpected guests arrive.

0:12:13 > 0:12:17The men, obviously, can't keep away from us lovely ladies because

0:12:17 > 0:12:21I think a few of the reprobates have appeared from the stag do.

0:12:21 > 0:12:24I can't see the stag anywhere, so perhaps that's a good thing.

0:12:24 > 0:12:27It might be a bad thing, actually. He's probably in bed or somewhere.

0:12:28 > 0:12:30As the night, and the drinks, roll by,

0:12:30 > 0:12:34groom Dan gatecrashes the hen party.

0:12:34 > 0:12:35Or is it Danielle?!

0:12:35 > 0:12:38You're supposed to be at The Bishops.

0:12:38 > 0:12:41You're not supposed to be in The Farmers at all.

0:12:41 > 0:12:45This is a hen party. Off you go, please.

0:12:45 > 0:12:47It's been a rowdy night to remember.

0:12:47 > 0:12:51Just time to shake off the sore heads before the wedding.

0:13:00 > 0:13:03While the long hot summer pulls in thousands of holiday-makers

0:13:03 > 0:13:05to Pembrokeshire's coast,

0:13:05 > 0:13:07the routine of life goes on for the locals.

0:13:09 > 0:13:13Jack Lloyd is Milford Haven born and bred, and as with any

0:13:13 > 0:13:17Monday morning, he's at his local bowls club with his best mate, Tony.

0:13:17 > 0:13:19Touch more...

0:13:19 > 0:13:22OK. Go with that.

0:13:23 > 0:13:25Looks good.

0:13:25 > 0:13:29Jack is an international-standard bowls player,

0:13:29 > 0:13:32and is ranked third in his class in the UK.

0:13:32 > 0:13:34Weight looks good.

0:13:36 > 0:13:38- Nice one, Jack.- Thank you.

0:13:38 > 0:13:40And Jack is completely blind.

0:13:40 > 0:13:43Jack didn't start bowling until he lost his sight.

0:13:43 > 0:13:46I can't imagine what that's like.

0:13:46 > 0:13:48I put my hand in what I think is the right position

0:13:48 > 0:13:50and Tony tells me just to tweak it a bit.

0:13:50 > 0:13:53I let it go and hope for the best, then.

0:13:53 > 0:13:57If I make a cock-up, he makes a cock-up, too. Simple as that.

0:13:57 > 0:14:00He just gets on with life. He just gets on with life.

0:14:00 > 0:14:03People who get a bit fed up, they want to come down here for an hour

0:14:03 > 0:14:06and see what people can do. Amazing.

0:14:08 > 0:14:12It's been a tough time for Jack after the death of his first

0:14:12 > 0:14:13guide dog six months ago.

0:14:15 > 0:14:20She was Wilma, a shepherd retriever, and I had her for eight years.

0:14:20 > 0:14:25She passed away just after Christmas, and that was the toughest day

0:14:25 > 0:14:30I've ever had, because of how close they get to you, or you get to them.

0:14:30 > 0:14:31You know.

0:14:31 > 0:14:34Jack is now just three weeks into building a relationship

0:14:34 > 0:14:37with his new guide dog, Jackson.

0:14:37 > 0:14:41I've got to get to know how he approaches different obstacles

0:14:41 > 0:14:44to Wilma, who was completely... She was just different.

0:14:44 > 0:14:45She indicated in different ways.

0:14:45 > 0:14:49Jackson is very cautious, and he's always looking for reassurance

0:14:49 > 0:14:51and that's because he's young and it's a new route.

0:14:52 > 0:14:57Out you go. Forward. Straight on. Go on.

0:14:58 > 0:15:00The new best friends have been getting to grips

0:15:00 > 0:15:03with taking on the busy roads of Milford Haven.

0:15:03 > 0:15:05Sometimes he gets confused.

0:15:05 > 0:15:08We're coming up to a lamppost that I know about somewhere.

0:15:08 > 0:15:10He tends to go the wrong side of it

0:15:10 > 0:15:12and I don't know why. He's getting better.

0:15:12 > 0:15:16But some days it just confuses him for some reason.

0:15:16 > 0:15:17But away from the town centre,

0:15:17 > 0:15:22there's one place that Jack dreams of returning to -

0:15:22 > 0:15:24the coastal path.

0:15:24 > 0:15:25We haven't quite done the path yet.

0:15:25 > 0:15:29We haven't done a walk since he's qualified, cos he is quite young.

0:15:29 > 0:15:32I'm sure he'll enjoy it, but it's taking that first step,

0:15:32 > 0:15:34thinking what he's going to be like.

0:15:36 > 0:15:41Jack regularly walked the coast path with his previous guide dog Wilma,

0:15:41 > 0:15:44but for Jackson, guiding his master along the cliff tops

0:15:44 > 0:15:46will be a huge challenge.

0:15:55 > 0:15:58Artist Lizzie Stonhold has been getting Fishguard knitting

0:15:58 > 0:16:00for her Granny Graffiti project,

0:16:00 > 0:16:03in her bid to raise community spirit

0:16:03 > 0:16:05and increase her chances of getting a job.

0:16:07 > 0:16:09I think, so far, there's been about 500 knitters

0:16:09 > 0:16:10involved in the community.

0:16:10 > 0:16:13It's been really, really encouraging.

0:16:13 > 0:16:15Fingers crossed we get there.

0:16:16 > 0:16:18This is amazing!

0:16:18 > 0:16:20Look at that. Well done.

0:16:20 > 0:16:22And Lizzie has had some good news.

0:16:22 > 0:16:27The local arts society has stepped in with some much-needed funding.

0:16:27 > 0:16:29It's just an excuse to have a big laugh, I think.

0:16:29 > 0:16:31Just to put some fun into Fishguard.

0:16:38 > 0:16:40The project is gathering pace,

0:16:40 > 0:16:44and even the ferry crew have picked up their needles.

0:16:44 > 0:16:47I did actually knit a scarf when I was ill in bed

0:16:47 > 0:16:49when I was a very young little boy.

0:16:52 > 0:16:54But there is one person in particular

0:16:54 > 0:16:56that Lizzie is keen to get knitting -

0:16:56 > 0:16:59local sculptor and eco-inventor, Buzz Knapp-Fisher.

0:16:59 > 0:17:02All summer, Buzz has been making his portable Loo with a View

0:17:02 > 0:17:06for the walkers that visit his Fairy Cafe.

0:17:06 > 0:17:08- This is your loo!- Yes!

0:17:08 > 0:17:11- The Mark I.- Yeah.

0:17:11 > 0:17:15Basically, a toilet for the moment and, well, collecting energy.

0:17:15 > 0:17:18- Right.- The idea of this toilet is everything is kept.

0:17:18 > 0:17:20Our body produces a lot of products,

0:17:20 > 0:17:26which could easily be used for fertilisers and for chemistry.

0:17:26 > 0:17:30- Rainwater collects in here.- OK. - Then that is filtered.

0:17:30 > 0:17:31That goes into the sink.

0:17:33 > 0:17:35What I like about this is you tip it up,

0:17:35 > 0:17:38which then is used

0:17:38 > 0:17:40for flushing the toilet.

0:17:41 > 0:17:44Now Buzz wants to spruce up the Loo with a View

0:17:44 > 0:17:45with some granny graffiti.

0:17:45 > 0:17:49I really like the idea of the plastic drainpipe covering that.

0:17:49 > 0:17:51- Brilliant.- You could just do it, so it's just round there,

0:17:51 > 0:17:55if needed be, or it could be...

0:17:55 > 0:17:59- You could add on to it each year, really, couldn't you?- Ah, fantastic. Yeah.

0:17:59 > 0:18:02Yes, Buzz, it's time to get knitting.

0:18:04 > 0:18:05Oh, I've got the wrong bit!

0:18:05 > 0:18:08Oh, that was it. That's very confusing.

0:18:08 > 0:18:10That's definitely, sort of, practice, isn't it?

0:18:10 > 0:18:13- So, under...- Yep. - ..and over.- That's it.

0:18:13 > 0:18:17So you pull the needle back out through the way you came.

0:18:17 > 0:18:18That is so weird.

0:18:18 > 0:18:21Thing is, I can see what's going to happen.

0:18:21 > 0:18:23I'm going to make a mistake, I'll get cocky.

0:18:23 > 0:18:27Do you reckon you'll be able to carry on then without me?

0:18:27 > 0:18:29HE LAUGHS

0:18:29 > 0:18:31Not sure...

0:18:35 > 0:18:39After just two months learning to be both eyes and guide to Jack,

0:18:39 > 0:18:41the big day has come for Jackson

0:18:41 > 0:18:43to take his master on the coast path.

0:18:45 > 0:18:48I really am looking forward to it. It's a long time since I've been on this path.

0:18:48 > 0:18:51Probably 20 years or more since I've been on this section.

0:18:51 > 0:18:52Hopefully, it goes well!

0:18:54 > 0:18:57They're on a day out with the Pembrokeshire blind walkers group,

0:18:57 > 0:19:01to tackle three miles of the path to Broad Haven,

0:19:01 > 0:19:04and leading the expedition is park ranger Ian Meopham.

0:19:04 > 0:19:07There's quite a brisk, south-westerly wind blowing.

0:19:07 > 0:19:10As long as that stays on the right-hand side of your face,

0:19:10 > 0:19:11then things are looking quite good.

0:19:11 > 0:19:14If you find it on the left-hand side of your face,

0:19:14 > 0:19:16I would stop walking if I were you.

0:19:16 > 0:19:19And we'll turn you round and set you off in the right direction.

0:19:19 > 0:19:20Come on, then. Let's go.

0:19:20 > 0:19:24It's going to be a challenge for Jackson and Jack,

0:19:24 > 0:19:27so best friend Tony has come along for support.

0:19:27 > 0:19:31- You're OK there, Jack. Straight on. - It's very narrow here.- Yeah.

0:19:33 > 0:19:37At times, the path gets within just feet of the 200ft cliffs.

0:19:38 > 0:19:40Jackson, straight.

0:19:40 > 0:19:43But Jackson is keeping his master on course.

0:19:43 > 0:19:47- Good boy, Jackson.- Gorgeous today. - Can you see on to Tuskar Rock?

0:19:47 > 0:19:50Go on, forward. He's taking a sniff here and there, I can feel.

0:19:50 > 0:19:51Lots of distractions.

0:19:51 > 0:19:54- Right, Jack, it's quite nasty here. Keep to your right.- Jackson, right.

0:19:54 > 0:19:56- There we are, you're OK. - Straight on.

0:19:57 > 0:20:01How come you've got the path anyway? You're forcing me up on the grass.

0:20:01 > 0:20:05Jack loved walking the path, before he lost his sight completely

0:20:05 > 0:20:08eight years ago due to a genetic condition.

0:20:08 > 0:20:11But now he experiences the landscape in different ways.

0:20:11 > 0:20:14It's beautiful.

0:20:14 > 0:20:16I rely on my ears to pick up sounds.

0:20:16 > 0:20:19The wind direction on one side of your face

0:20:19 > 0:20:20or in front of you, the sun.

0:20:20 > 0:20:23That's how I orientate myself on the path.

0:20:23 > 0:20:26Sometimes you come down here when there's been a storm.

0:20:26 > 0:20:29You can feel the spray at this height, 150, 200 feet, whatever it is.

0:20:31 > 0:20:33You just look at things just totally different in your life.

0:20:33 > 0:20:35A lot of the time, I think he's playing tricks on me,

0:20:35 > 0:20:37that he is sighted.

0:20:37 > 0:20:40I mean, obviously, he's got a lot of confidence in Jackson

0:20:40 > 0:20:42and Jackson's doing his job, isn't he?

0:20:42 > 0:20:44This step is a whopper, this next one.

0:20:45 > 0:20:47- There we go.- OK.

0:20:47 > 0:20:49It's like the bloody Grand National.

0:20:50 > 0:20:54The coast path presents different challenges for different people.

0:20:54 > 0:20:56Some people will run it, some people will walk it,

0:20:56 > 0:21:00some people will totter along it, some people will try it in one hit.

0:21:00 > 0:21:03It's just lovely when guys with problems visually

0:21:03 > 0:21:06are able to come out and enjoy it, as well.

0:21:06 > 0:21:10The group have been led safely to their end destination,

0:21:10 > 0:21:12Broad Haven Beach.

0:21:12 > 0:21:15- OK, we can go onto the beach now. - Forward.- OK, we're on the beach.

0:21:15 > 0:21:19Jackson has passed his first coast walk with flying colours

0:21:19 > 0:21:21and Jack has his freedom back once more.

0:21:22 > 0:21:24Good boy! Good boy!

0:21:26 > 0:21:28- Thanks, Jack.- Oh, sorry! - It's down my boot.

0:21:30 > 0:21:32You shouldn't have put your foot there!

0:21:35 > 0:21:38The day of the Dinas Head Challenge has arrived,

0:21:38 > 0:21:41and as both Newport team coach and race organiser,

0:21:41 > 0:21:44it's going to be a busy day for Pete.

0:21:44 > 0:21:47May I welcome you to Newport Boat Club.

0:21:47 > 0:21:51A record number of boats and crews have arrived to battle it out

0:21:51 > 0:21:52over the eight-mile course

0:21:52 > 0:21:55around the coast from Goodwick Harbour to Newport.

0:21:55 > 0:21:58And after months of gruelling training,

0:21:58 > 0:22:02it's time for old rivals Solva and Newport to square up.

0:22:03 > 0:22:06- How's the team looking then? - Oh, OK. Yeah.

0:22:06 > 0:22:09I shouldn't be even bloody speaking to you!

0:22:09 > 0:22:12Pete has trained his Newport team hard,

0:22:12 > 0:22:15but Mike and his Solva crew are feeling confident.

0:22:15 > 0:22:18We're going to pull extremely hard

0:22:18 > 0:22:22until we get to Newport and then we're going to drink plenty of beer.

0:22:22 > 0:22:23Yep! That sounds good to me.

0:22:27 > 0:22:32It's very important that you show your starting number that way round.

0:22:32 > 0:22:35OK. And do that as you go past and smile.

0:22:35 > 0:22:39If you fail to do that, don't blame me if I haven't recorded your time.

0:22:41 > 0:22:43There's nothing worse than doing this race

0:22:43 > 0:22:45and then I can't even give them their results.

0:22:45 > 0:22:48I can tell you there's a lot of pressure on the time keepers.

0:22:48 > 0:22:51I've got three other back-up people backing me up on the times.

0:22:51 > 0:22:56Time for Pete and his helpers to get the race started.

0:22:56 > 0:22:59- Are you happy to let it go, over? - What number are they?

0:23:00 > 0:23:03- What number are they? - What number is this one, Pete?

0:23:03 > 0:23:06I don't know. I told them, if they don't show their numbers.

0:23:06 > 0:23:08I do know which team that is, anyway, so it's fine.

0:23:08 > 0:23:10Yeah, but we don't.

0:23:10 > 0:23:12I'll tell you which number it is.

0:23:12 > 0:23:13Set, go!

0:23:13 > 0:23:17- Off we go!- It's a race against the clock, or rather clocks,

0:23:17 > 0:23:21and Newport are sent off first in their boat Tonnau Glas

0:23:21 > 0:23:23or Blue Waves...

0:23:23 > 0:23:25- Go!- OK!

0:23:25 > 0:23:26Let's go!

0:23:26 > 0:23:30..closely followed by Solva, with Mike at the helm of their boat,

0:23:30 > 0:23:31Auntie Mattie.

0:23:31 > 0:23:33We're off!

0:23:33 > 0:23:36Both are competing in the mixed team category,

0:23:36 > 0:23:40with two men and two women making up the crew.

0:23:40 > 0:23:42And as the boats leave Goodwick Harbour,

0:23:42 > 0:23:44Newport are holding off Solva.

0:23:46 > 0:23:48That's good! Keep it up!

0:23:48 > 0:23:50Relaxed power!

0:23:54 > 0:23:58But ahead lies eight miles of gruelling open-sea rowing.

0:24:04 > 0:24:07It's been a week since Buzz was taught to knit by Lizzie,

0:24:07 > 0:24:10and she's back to see how her pupil has been getting on.

0:24:10 > 0:24:13- I'll sit down.- Yeah, sit down!

0:24:15 > 0:24:20- Productivity was slow for a variety of reasons.- Yeah.

0:24:20 > 0:24:24- But I have made a sculpture.- Right. - And it has got a knitting theme.- OK.

0:24:24 > 0:24:27- I'm intrigued.- I'll show it to you. - OK. It'll be wonderful, I'm sure.

0:24:33 > 0:24:36So is your sculpture going to go in the loo, then, Buzz?

0:24:36 > 0:24:39No, it's going on the outside, funnily enough.

0:24:39 > 0:24:43- Right.- Well, here it is. - Oh, wow! That's wonderful.

0:24:43 > 0:24:46A cartoon image of me, and the snail represents

0:24:46 > 0:24:51the slowness of my learning, but I am getting there.

0:24:51 > 0:24:52Oh, I love it.

0:24:52 > 0:24:57With Mini Buzz made, and with the Loo with a View almost complete,

0:24:57 > 0:25:02the time has come for big Buzz to undertake the first test run.

0:25:06 > 0:25:08Right, I think we're nearly ready.

0:25:08 > 0:25:12Fire up the chip fat-fuelled Land Rover.

0:25:12 > 0:25:14It's not a fast getaway vehicle.

0:25:14 > 0:25:17It's not ideal for a bank robbery, I have to say.

0:25:21 > 0:25:24After months of building,

0:25:24 > 0:25:27Buzz's Loo with a View is finally on the road.

0:25:28 > 0:25:30HE HONKS HORN

0:25:35 > 0:25:36Oh!

0:25:39 > 0:25:40It's made a deposit.

0:25:41 > 0:25:43Well, it is a test run!

0:25:45 > 0:25:47Part of my mother's Vauxhall.

0:25:47 > 0:25:50- We'll cross the hurdles when we get them, I always say.- Yeah.

0:26:09 > 0:26:13MIKE SHOUTS ENCOURAGEMENT

0:26:13 > 0:26:15Keep it going! Let's not let them past us now!

0:26:17 > 0:26:21Meanwhile, Pete stands guard at the race finish in Newport Yacht Club,

0:26:21 > 0:26:23ready to clock the boats in.

0:26:23 > 0:26:25Quite a group of them out there.

0:26:25 > 0:26:29- I'd say they're about eight minutes away.- It's up to me now.

0:26:29 > 0:26:31LOUDSPEAKER: OK, here they come.

0:26:31 > 0:26:33About two, two and a half miles left!

0:26:40 > 0:26:42LOUDSPEAKER: OK, here comes the team from Tawe Port.

0:26:44 > 0:26:47The faster men's teams come in first.

0:26:49 > 0:26:51But Solva have dug deep...

0:26:53 > 0:26:58..and after over an hour of flat-out rowing, guided by cox Mike,

0:26:58 > 0:27:00they easily beat Newport.

0:27:00 > 0:27:02Come on, keep it up!

0:27:04 > 0:27:06APPLAUSE

0:27:08 > 0:27:09Fantastic!

0:27:09 > 0:27:12- They rowed an absolute...- Woo!

0:27:12 > 0:27:16It's been a great race for novice rowers Nia and Jasmine.

0:27:16 > 0:27:19We said on the way, she's no longer a bum blister virgin.

0:27:22 > 0:27:25As the celebrations wash away the pain,

0:27:25 > 0:27:28the officials frantically calculate the race times

0:27:28 > 0:27:29for all 30 boats.

0:27:30 > 0:27:32The results are in.

0:27:33 > 0:27:37They all pulled out the stops but didn't quite make it today,

0:27:49 > 0:27:52In a time of one hour, four minutes and 24 seconds,

0:27:52 > 0:27:55in their boat, Auntie Mattie, was the mixed team from Solva.

0:27:55 > 0:27:57CHEERING

0:27:57 > 0:28:02But Solva finish three and a half minutes ahead, to take second.

0:28:02 > 0:28:03It may not be a class win,

0:28:03 > 0:28:05but they've beaten the old foe.

0:28:07 > 0:28:10Well, I have to say, "Well done."

0:28:10 > 0:28:13You got the best of us this year. There's always next year.

0:28:21 > 0:28:26Next time, Fishguard is transformed overnight...

0:28:26 > 0:28:29They'll go out and walk the dog and suddenly there'll be all this knitting.

0:28:29 > 0:28:33..a footprint sparks a ghost hunt in a coastal fort...

0:28:33 > 0:28:35That's the past speaking to us.

0:28:35 > 0:28:36Whoa!

0:28:36 > 0:28:40..and the big day finally arrives for Nat, as she ties the knot.

0:28:41 > 0:28:43THEY ARGUE
