0:00:04 > 0:00:10Many of us feel like we're stuck in a rut. My heart sinks when I think

0:00:11 > 0:00:15of being stuck in front of the screen for 20 years. But what if you

0:00:16 > 0:00:19could experience a world difference to the one you know? Imagine being

0:00:20 > 0:00:28flown across the world and opening your eyes. To find yourself in

0:00:29 > 0:00:35someone else's life. Good grief. I am certainly outside the M25 right

0:00:36 > 0:00:39now. In this series, we will see people swap places with complete

0:00:40 > 0:00:42strangers from across the globe. I never dream to be in a place like

0:00:43 > 0:00:52this. While their opposite numbers... Are crocodiles? No. Test

0:00:53 > 0:00:58drive life in Britain. Is that Big Ben? For seven days, both will be

0:00:59 > 0:01:04immersed in a culture that is totally different from their own.

0:01:05 > 0:01:09We're not in Kansas any more, Toto. Could walking in someone else's

0:01:10 > 0:01:13shoes be the wake-up call for a better life back at home? Are they

0:01:14 > 0:01:19want to have a life just like this. What can you learn by seeing your

0:01:20 > 0:01:23world through a stranger's eyes? What would you do if you were me? I

0:01:24 > 0:01:36really don't know what the impact of this is going to be. It's easy to

0:01:37 > 0:01:47know what makes you miserable. But what makes you happy is really hard.

0:01:48 > 0:01:54This week, two women from different sides of the globe have agreed to

0:01:55 > 0:02:00swap lives. Both have reached retirement age and both are at a

0:02:01 > 0:02:05crossroads. One wants to see a world beyond her small rural home. I think

0:02:06 > 0:02:12if I had my time again, there are so many places to go and explore. The

0:02:13 > 0:02:21other... Wants to escape her hectic city life. Maybe I should have a

0:02:22 > 0:02:26rest. Now they are about to get a window onto a world which is the

0:02:27 > 0:02:36total opposite of the road. -- their own. Margaret, 6-4, lives and works

0:02:37 > 0:02:40with husband Trevor in the isolated community of Sunderland coins in

0:02:41 > 0:02:43Lancashire, located at the end of a causeway. Twice a day, the whole

0:02:44 > 0:02:48place is cut off from the mainland by the rising tides. It is only

0:02:49 > 0:02:51seven miles from Lancaster but this tiny fishing village could not be

0:02:52 > 0:03:00further from the hustle and bustle of city life. That one is like a

0:03:01 > 0:03:04jellyfish. Trevor is 70 and I am 64 and we do not need to work any more.

0:03:05 > 0:03:08It is not a job to us, it is a way of life. They raised their children

0:03:09 > 0:03:12here and in 30 years, they have never lived anywhere else. But now

0:03:13 > 0:03:18Margaret wants to see if there is more to life. I love Sunderland

0:03:19 > 0:03:24point. The world is such a small place, really, you should really see

0:03:25 > 0:03:29more and do more. Let's say I live to 90, I only have 20 years. It is

0:03:30 > 0:03:36so easy to be settled with Sunderland Point. It is easy to get

0:03:37 > 0:03:41comfortable. She is more adventurous than me. I have lived in Lancashire

0:03:42 > 0:03:45all my life. I have never wanted to live anywhere else. For the first

0:03:46 > 0:03:51time since they married, she will be travelling without Trevor. Obviously

0:03:52 > 0:03:58it is unusual, going anywhere without us being there. It is a

0:03:59 > 0:04:04challenge, isn't it? But that is what makes it exciting. There is

0:04:05 > 0:04:10another world out there and it is interesting to see it. Margaret is

0:04:11 > 0:04:17about to swap lives. Businesswoman Cathy, from Taipei. The capital city

0:04:18 > 0:04:23of the island of Taiwan, 110 miles from mainland China. Taiwan is home

0:04:24 > 0:04:26to more than 23 million people. The Taiwanese, we think work is more

0:04:27 > 0:04:31important than family. You are hard-working but you do not have a

0:04:32 > 0:04:34really good life. She brought her daughter, Hoilett, upload, starting

0:04:35 > 0:04:42various businesses to support both. She does not do anything for

0:04:43 > 0:04:46herself, for the past 50 years. After decades of juggling career and

0:04:47 > 0:04:57family, she longs to experience a simpler life. The city is a rush. I

0:04:58 > 0:04:57don't want it to be rushed. The adventure begins when they open

0:04:58 > 0:05:26their eyes. Wow. Good heavens. Look at

0:05:27 > 0:05:44everywhere, it is just so busy. So this is the UK. Good grief. Wow. So

0:05:45 > 0:05:49many people, so much noise. For the next week, Cathy and Margaret will

0:05:50 > 0:05:56live in each other's worlds. Wow, right. But first they have to find

0:05:57 > 0:06:04their way to their new homes. Margaret, Sunderland Point.

0:06:05 > 0:06:10Lancashire. OK, let's go. This writing tells you absolutely nothing

0:06:11 > 0:06:13at all. City slicker Cathy negotiates the countryside. I have

0:06:14 > 0:06:17made the right decision. I did not take my high heels. Country girl,

0:06:18 > 0:06:26Margaret, is straight in at the deep end. Do you speak English? No? Sorry

0:06:27 > 0:06:35to bother you. Excuse me, do you speak English? No? OK. Excuse me, do

0:06:36 > 0:06:45you speak English? This square has suddenly become very empty. They are

0:06:46 > 0:06:50thinking I am in in madwoman. Excuse me, is this very far-away? Taipei is

0:06:51 > 0:06:55one of the most densely populated cities on earth, home to 2.5 million

0:06:56 > 0:07:02people. Margaret's village of Sunderland Point has a population of

0:07:03 > 0:07:13just 63. The yellow card as a taxi. How do I get it? I will show you.

0:07:14 > 0:07:19Put your hand up. Thank you very much. Although Margaret was born in

0:07:20 > 0:07:24Manchester, she has not lived in a city since she was six years old.

0:07:25 > 0:07:28For the first 20 years of their marriage, Margaret and Trevor did

0:07:29 > 0:07:31not have the time or money to spend on foreign travel. The busy stresses

0:07:32 > 0:07:36and strains of life, just running the family, making ends meet, the

0:07:37 > 0:07:41web you weave in life can easily wrap around you and the days just

0:07:42 > 0:07:46passed. I'm so busy trying to look after everybody, there was no time

0:07:47 > 0:07:51to have an adventure. I'm quite excited about going to Cathy's. I

0:07:52 > 0:07:55feel a little bit nervous and I hope they like me. I am sure that I will

0:07:56 > 0:08:02like them. I hope they are not disappointed in English people. In

0:08:03 > 0:08:08the UK, Cathy, too, has managed to flag someone down. Lancashire is

0:08:09 > 0:08:18this way or that way? This is all in Lancashire. This is Lancashire? Yes.

0:08:19 > 0:08:23Do you know Margaret? No. But I know Sunderland Point. Get in and I will

0:08:24 > 0:08:31take you to there. I do a good driver? Yes. At home in Taipei,

0:08:32 > 0:08:3859-year-old Cathy spends an average of 70 hours a week working to

0:08:39 > 0:08:42support herself and family. When Scarlet was two years old, I decided

0:08:43 > 0:08:49to get divorced. I did not know what I would do, how to make money, how

0:08:50 > 0:08:53to make a good life for my daughter. For the past year they have been

0:08:54 > 0:08:59running a fashion boutique together. Now I have my daughter working with

0:09:00 > 0:09:03me, but actually it is more and more difficult. A busy work schedule is

0:09:04 > 0:09:08leaving less and less time for family life. I only have three

0:09:09 > 0:09:12holidays the whole of my life because I have had to take care of

0:09:13 > 0:09:22business. Thank you so very much. I hope to see you again. This way?

0:09:23 > 0:09:31Negative, down there. -- no down there. Kathy is slowly closing in on

0:09:32 > 0:09:38Margaret's home. That is the main street, the main road. Good luck.

0:09:39 > 0:09:47Take care. This is your house? Not my house. But this is the house?

0:09:48 > 0:09:52This is the house. Sunderland Point has just 36 houses. The single-track

0:09:53 > 0:10:00road in and out is only accessible at low tide. Sunderland Point! We

0:10:01 > 0:10:13are finally here. Cathy will be shown the life of a Fisher woman by

0:10:14 > 0:10:16Margaret's husband, Trevor. Hello. This is Margaret's place and you are

0:10:17 > 0:10:28Cathy. I am Trevor. I am pleased to meet you. We will make you very

0:10:29 > 0:10:34welcome. Thank you. Thank you. Bye-bye. In Taipei, Margaret has

0:10:35 > 0:10:39found her way to Cathy's home, which she shares with scarlet and second

0:10:40 > 0:10:47husband, James. Hello. I am Margaret. My name is James. That is

0:10:48 > 0:10:52lovely, James. Can I come in? It is really kind of you to have me here.

0:10:53 > 0:10:59It is very kind. You are also very kind to have my wife. You have a

0:11:00 > 0:11:06beautiful house, James. I have never had any foreigners in my house

0:11:07 > 0:11:19before! I was young. You are still young now. I think she looks very

0:11:20 > 0:11:24healthy. She must be and energetic person. You can stay here if you

0:11:25 > 0:11:32like. If that is OK with you, James? If that is no problem. This is just

0:11:33 > 0:11:43lovely, thank you so much. After a journey of 6000 miles, both

0:11:44 > 0:11:50women are settling in for their first night in their new lives. When

0:11:51 > 0:11:54I opened my eyes, I thought oh my gosh, there was just so much going

0:11:55 > 0:11:59on, the buildings were so tall and the traffic and the people. I was

0:12:00 > 0:12:10thinking, what have I let myself in for? I hope that Cathy doesn't find

0:12:11 > 0:12:18it too quiet. Where I live. Too quiet and too cold!

0:12:19 > 0:12:25It is quiet here, quieter than Taipei. Taipei is so crowded, 24

0:12:26 > 0:12:29hours you can see the light, you can see the 711. It is still noisy. It

0:12:30 > 0:12:49is different. You should always try to have some

0:12:50 > 0:12:57time that is only for yourself. Wow, James. Who is this lady on the cup?

0:12:58 > 0:13:05That is Cathy, isn't it? That is the crazy end of Taiwan. It is Margaret

0:13:06 > 0:13:08and Cathy's first day in the new worlds. To be honest, I didn't turn

0:13:09 > 0:13:15off the lights the whole night. This house is strange for me. It is too

0:13:16 > 0:13:20dark and too quiet. In Taipei, Margaret is going to spend the day

0:13:21 > 0:13:29with Cathy's., scarlet. And that means finding her way to the shop.

0:13:30 > 0:13:35Leaving the safety of the apartment is really creepy, really. It's like

0:13:36 > 0:13:40a massive labyrinth because everywhere looks the same. Excuse

0:13:41 > 0:13:44me. I am looking for the Metro? I am looking for the metro. There are

0:13:45 > 0:13:49just three streets on the whole of Sunderland Point. So she is finding

0:13:50 > 0:13:58negotiating the city quite a challenge. I could do with a bag of

0:13:59 > 0:13:59breadcrumbs to leave a trail. 2 million people ride the metro in

0:14:00 > 0:14:13Taipei each day. Millions of people ride the Metro

0:14:14 > 0:14:19every day. Today, Margaret will be one of them. I think I have been on

0:14:20 > 0:14:25a train one in 20 years and I don't use public transport. I have this,

0:14:26 > 0:14:30what do I do with it? I'd put it in there? Sorry to be a nuisance, I

0:14:31 > 0:14:37have not done this before. I put this in there and then move onto the

0:14:38 > 0:14:44next stage? Yes. Thank you. I will follow everybody. I am through. Yes!

0:14:45 > 0:14:48This is the first time I have had an adventure like this on my own. I

0:14:49 > 0:14:53have never done any thing like this before, I just rely on Trevor. I

0:14:54 > 0:15:05miss him dreadfully. I just think, Trevor! What is scary is, if I get

0:15:06 > 0:15:14off at the wrong stop. I can be a bit scatterbrained like that. I can

0:15:15 > 0:15:18get lost near where I live. Yes. I have got to say, I am proud of

0:15:19 > 0:15:21myself when I tell my Trevor what I have done, he will not believe it. I

0:15:22 > 0:15:31think I would rather walk three miles out of my way than go on that.

0:15:32 > 0:15:38At Sunderland point, Kathy's commute is a little bit more

0:15:39 > 0:15:49straightforward. Shall I change? I am going to give you some proper

0:15:50 > 0:15:52clothes. First stop for the fashionista, Sunderland point

0:15:53 > 0:16:02makeover. My daughter says, my mother always has high heels every

0:16:03 > 0:16:05day. Now I am fishing. Although Kathy has always wanted to

0:16:06 > 0:16:09experience a less urban lifestyle, she may have hit a stumbling block

0:16:10 > 0:16:15when it comes to living on the coast. I am afraid of water. I am

0:16:16 > 0:16:22especially afraid of oceans because I believe they have big sharks in

0:16:23 > 0:16:28them so I always keep away from the water. But it is OK, I know Trevor

0:16:29 > 0:16:34will protect me. Although Margaret and Trevor used to fish full-time,

0:16:35 > 0:16:38recently they have been doing less, but the chores add up and there is

0:16:39 > 0:16:53more to being a fisherman by going out to sea. Steps. OK, OK. Keeps

0:16:54 > 0:17:01moving. Such as scraping barnacles from the hull of their boat. Today,

0:17:02 > 0:17:08Kathy will be helping. This is a really hard job. I think because I

0:17:09 > 0:17:20am doing this for the first time, so I don't know how to use this. She is

0:17:21 > 0:17:28doing well, for somebody who has never done anything like this in her

0:17:29 > 0:17:33life. I hate to ask, has Margaret complained about this before? She

0:17:34 > 0:17:46has done a little bit. But I have as well. So you complain to each other?

0:17:47 > 0:17:53Margaret does this as well? Yes, she does it on her own sometimes. After

0:17:54 > 0:17:58a morning of manual labour, Kathy thinks she has found her calling. I

0:17:59 > 0:18:03have enjoyed it. I think I could be a good helper for Trevor. So that is

0:18:04 > 0:18:24meaning I can come here to find a job. That is big, can you manage? It

0:18:25 > 0:18:28is OK, I can do that. Having survived the Taipei Metro system,

0:18:29 > 0:18:33Margaret has arrived in the busy shopping district where Kathy and

0:18:34 > 0:18:41Scarlet have their boutique. Hello. Yes, I am Scarlet. Thank you for

0:18:42 > 0:18:49letting me come to your shop. This is my shop and my mum's shop. Who is

0:18:50 > 0:18:56the boss, you or your mum? My mum is the boss. You are supposed to say

0:18:57 > 0:19:03you are the boss. The boutique is split down the middle. Scarlet runs

0:19:04 > 0:19:09the fashion side while Kathy makes her own bags. The boutique is a new

0:19:10 > 0:19:16business for Kathy and Scarlet, they first opened less than a year ago.

0:19:17 > 0:19:22What is this, Scarlet? It is a scar. You can wear it with a shirt. The

0:19:23 > 0:19:28fashion world is lovely, but at the end of the day, it just isn't me.

0:19:29 > 0:19:35That is an interesting garment. When I am going shopping for myself, I do

0:19:36 > 0:19:39take Trevor with me. We will walk in and he will say, now, Margaret, what

0:19:40 > 0:19:46do you think about this? I will say OK, let's go. Then he will say, have

0:19:47 > 0:19:52another look. I will pay hundreds of pounds for good wellingtons and

0:19:53 > 0:19:57waders. Do you like fashion? I don't have any time for it because I am a

0:19:58 > 0:20:07Fisher woman. Do you go out in the boat? Yes, I catch fish, my world is

0:20:08 > 0:20:15full of mud and water. Will my mum do that? Yes. I was very surprised

0:20:16 > 0:20:19when Margaret told me she was a Fisher woman, she hasn't been living

0:20:20 > 0:20:26in the city. It must be very new for her. Even though I work with my mum,

0:20:27 > 0:20:31we are very independent, we work separately. Normally I don't have

0:20:32 > 0:20:36anybody to help. It is nice to have somebody to help. Now I know the

0:20:37 > 0:20:41runs this shop, has a beautiful daughter, I wonder how she is doing

0:20:42 > 0:20:45at Sunderland point. If she is tough enough to run her own business, she

0:20:46 > 0:20:51will be tough enough to do the fishing. 6000 miles away, Kathy's

0:20:52 > 0:20:57first day of walking in Margaret's wellies has come to an end. I don't

0:20:58 > 0:21:03have to answer the phone. I don't have to worry about my computer. In

0:21:04 > 0:21:09Taipei, everybody is talking about this and this. It is quiet here, it

0:21:10 > 0:21:14is calm. I want to slow down, but I have to take care of my daughter and

0:21:15 > 0:21:21myself. That is pretty difficult. Pretty difficult. I want to sit here

0:21:22 > 0:21:24for the whole day. Nothing to do, nothing to worry, nothing to carry

0:21:25 > 0:21:36on. I like to sit here for a whole day.

0:21:37 > 0:21:45In Taipei, Margaret and Scarlet have only just finished work. Here, even

0:21:46 > 0:21:52small shops open seven days a week and rarely shut before 10pm why do

0:21:53 > 0:21:57you work such long hours, Scarlet and your mum does as well? Is she

0:21:58 > 0:22:02looking forward to retirement? She will definitely want to retire in

0:22:03 > 0:22:08the future. I am trying to convince her to slow down a little bit. The

0:22:09 > 0:22:13average state pension in Taiwan is less than ?120 a month. With little

0:22:14 > 0:22:18help from the government, most Taiwanese work long hours to make

0:22:19 > 0:22:24sure they can support themselves in old age. Everybody works very hard.

0:22:25 > 0:22:34They work crazy hours. If we can make more and save up now, it is

0:22:35 > 0:22:38better. This city is on the go all the time and there is as many people

0:22:39 > 0:22:47and it is just as busy now, nearly 11 o'clock as at midday when the sun

0:22:48 > 0:22:56was hot. I am really tired now. I never slept last night at all and I

0:22:57 > 0:23:09am hoping to get a better sleep. OK, night-night. Come here. In the UK,

0:23:10 > 0:23:23Kathy is getting a close and personal with the Lancashire locals.

0:23:24 > 0:23:35Come on, come and meet Kathy. Hello, I am Kathy. While in Taipei,

0:23:36 > 0:23:42Margaret's day starts with hitting the shops with her new husband,

0:23:43 > 0:23:46James. I don't have any shops where I live, I have to travel at least

0:23:47 > 0:23:51four or five miles just to get to any shop. I cannot just pop out.

0:23:52 > 0:23:57This is the one thing that is very convenient about the city. Taipei

0:23:58 > 0:24:01has more convenience stores per head of population than anywhere in the

0:24:02 > 0:24:05world. But there are clear differences between the shops and

0:24:06 > 0:24:16Margaret's supermarket. Why is everything in miniature. This is for

0:24:17 > 0:24:20the individual, not a family. What I have noticed in Taipei, a lot of

0:24:21 > 0:24:28people on their own. Whether just their partners are at work or they

0:24:29 > 0:24:31provide to be on their own, but a lot of people are on their own. The

0:24:32 > 0:24:39city is so busy, you would think people know each other, but nobody

0:24:40 > 0:24:44smiles. They work such unsociable hours, it is just work, work, work

0:24:45 > 0:24:49and their lives are so fast, there is no community. I am not being

0:24:50 > 0:24:54nosy, James, do you know your neighbours? Do you have anybody in

0:24:55 > 0:24:59for a cup of tea? I did get my neighbours in and have a cup of tea.

0:25:00 > 0:25:06It is difficult. Most people avoid this type of confrontation. Where I

0:25:07 > 0:25:14live, we don't think of it as a confrontation, it is feeling safe.

0:25:15 > 0:25:23We feel safe. Exactly. Somebody in this apartment, don't communicate.

0:25:24 > 0:25:36Simply because we are working, people are working, day-to-day and

0:25:37 > 0:25:42meeting time is... 2 million people in Taipei, it could be a lonely

0:25:43 > 0:25:45place. Only 63 people in Sunderland point, people would think nobody was

0:25:46 > 0:25:50there but we are such a tight-knit community, there is more of a

0:25:51 > 0:25:55community on Sunderland point than there is a city of 2 million. Some

0:25:56 > 0:26:05think the new city of Sunderland point is finding out. Have a nice

0:26:06 > 0:26:18time. I am trying. Which houses yours? On the corner. Everybody is

0:26:19 > 0:26:26inquisitive. When you wake up in the morning and you look out on that.

0:26:27 > 0:26:33What more do you want? Nothing more. Are you in a small community? No, we

0:26:34 > 0:26:40have a whole city for a community, so nobody knows each other. That is

0:26:41 > 0:26:48sad. Get a Visa and come back here. I will come back later. Take care. I

0:26:49 > 0:26:54love to be here, I love the people here, they are so kind to me. It is

0:26:55 > 0:26:58so touching. Well Kathy settles into a new pace of life, her husband for

0:26:59 > 0:27:07the week is also trying something new. We are going to use the oven.

0:27:08 > 0:27:10Trevor isn't usually on cooking duties. Fortunately Margaret has

0:27:11 > 0:27:18left him a set of written instructions. Open the door, shut

0:27:19 > 0:27:28the door, set the time. Why do you have to write it down? Don't you

0:27:29 > 0:27:38know? I don't know. Trevor isn't the most romantic man in the world.

0:27:39 > 0:27:48Square tray. From outside looking, very tough and rough. I like chips.

0:27:49 > 0:27:58But he has a chocolate heart. Open the door, we are halfway there.

0:27:59 > 0:28:06Press start. Easy. Will you remember next time? No, I will have forgotten

0:28:07 > 0:28:13by the night, never mind next time. She is great, lovely. She is a

0:28:14 > 0:28:19really lovely person. She likes everybody, everybody likes her. She

0:28:20 > 0:28:26is a likeable person. Thank you so very much. There won't be many women

0:28:27 > 0:28:38in the world who could just come and step into Margaret's shoes. Very

0:28:39 > 0:28:41nice. In Taipei, Scarlet and Margaret will be having their

0:28:42 > 0:28:58evening meal in this busy night market. What is this. Pig hearts,

0:28:59 > 0:29:03pig liver. Is it nice. 68% of the population in Taipei eat out three

0:29:04 > 0:29:12times a day. It is only a Thursday night and everybody is out? We eat

0:29:13 > 0:29:17out a lot. In England, Friday or Saturday, special occasions, not

0:29:18 > 0:29:22like this all the time. A lot of apartments don't have a kitchen.

0:29:23 > 0:29:29Really? It is just easier and cheaper. I can't imagine not

0:29:30 > 0:29:33cooking. I think cooking is a family way of communicating when you sit

0:29:34 > 0:29:38round the table at home and you get together. Having food prepared in a

0:29:39 > 0:29:45home and inviting people in, makes it a good community. You know you

0:29:46 > 0:29:51work with your mum, is it OK? It is a bit crazy. We managed to figure

0:29:52 > 0:30:01out a way that we don't drive each other crazy. We fight all the time.

0:30:02 > 0:30:07You love each other dearly? It is hard. Normally you'd be able to go

0:30:08 > 0:30:14home and tell your mum about the day. Even though I live with her, I

0:30:15 > 0:30:19wouldn't talk to her. My daughter comes over and we talk because we

0:30:20 > 0:30:23haven't seen each other through the day. It must be hard for you because

0:30:24 > 0:30:29you are with your mum and you have nobody different to moan too.

0:30:30 > 0:30:34Young people don't want their mum all day and all night, so I think

0:30:35 > 0:30:46she does well, Scarlett, working with her mum of the time. That must

0:30:47 > 0:30:49put a strain on both of them. Yesterday, you can't change. Today

0:30:50 > 0:31:02is here and tomorrow is an adventure. In Sunderland Point,

0:31:03 > 0:31:13Cathy has volunteered to spend another day helping Trevor with his

0:31:14 > 0:31:19catch. Keep going. OK, OK, it's OK? Today, it's a whole of sprats and

0:31:20 > 0:31:23whitebait. She is keen to find out more about how they manage their

0:31:24 > 0:31:33rural worklife balance. You afraid to retire? I want to carry on until

0:31:34 > 0:31:38I'm 109. No, we just like doing it. We don't work every day of the week,

0:31:39 > 0:31:44we don't do it all the time. We do it for about seven days and then we

0:31:45 > 0:31:49have five or six days offer. I wouldn't like to pack it in

0:31:50 > 0:31:56altogether. I like being on the water, I love it. We enjoy doing it

0:31:57 > 0:32:00and that is all that matters. I think of Margaret and Trevor, they

0:32:01 > 0:32:06will not stop fishing because fishing is their life. I can see

0:32:07 > 0:32:12Trevor and Margaret, they are so happy to be like this. I am so

0:32:13 > 0:32:18jealous. I can't do a lot of things, because I am retired. I always had a

0:32:19 > 0:32:22dream, I want to live a conscious life, but I am not finished with my

0:32:23 > 0:32:32responsibilities yet. OK, coffee time. I wish that someday somebody

0:32:33 > 0:32:46could take over my business. This is what I'm thinking. Thank you. Wish

0:32:47 > 0:32:54me luck. In Taipei, a new day means a fresh start for Margaret. Just

0:32:55 > 0:32:59remember to keep calm. So far, she has struggled with the pace and

0:33:00 > 0:33:03loneliness of city living. Now she is determined to give Taipei and

0:33:04 > 0:33:07another goal. One I got the courage to change my opinion, I suddenly

0:33:08 > 0:33:13realised that it was up to me to find something that I liked. I

0:33:14 > 0:33:22thought this might be the freedom. I like this. It's nice. The shops are

0:33:23 > 0:33:25lovely. There is lots of traffic, and lots of greenery that you do not

0:33:26 > 0:33:38spot when you are in a car. I understand that you have to unwrap

0:33:39 > 0:33:41the city and find out more about it. There are green spaces, lovely

0:33:42 > 0:33:51people. You have to be adventurous and go and look. That is lovely,

0:33:52 > 0:33:55really lovely. There seems to be so much busyness and yet I have not

0:33:56 > 0:34:03seen one accident or one person knocked over. It is incredible. The

0:34:04 > 0:34:08bicycle is the way around here. I feel as though I have grown a bit of

0:34:09 > 0:34:11confidence doing this, because the first day, I could've just screamed

0:34:12 > 0:34:15and gone home. I thought I would never ever manage all these people

0:34:16 > 0:34:25in the traffic, never mind getting on a bicycle. I am quite proud of

0:34:26 > 0:34:29myself, really. Margaret's explorations have led her to an

0:34:30 > 0:34:36always is of calm in the heart of the city. Hello. I am wondering what

0:34:37 > 0:34:41it is all about. It looks so beautiful. We are practising tai

0:34:42 > 0:34:45chi, it is a kind of exercise. If you are interested, you are welcome

0:34:46 > 0:34:53to join us. I wouldn't be intruding? No problem. You can follow the

0:34:54 > 0:34:57steps. I really appreciate it. Thank you very much. Although originally

0:34:58 > 0:35:02devised as a fighting style, today tai chi is mainly practised as a

0:35:03 > 0:35:06form of exercise. Every day, thousands of students go through

0:35:07 > 0:35:10their moves together in Taipei's parks. The movements are believed to

0:35:11 > 0:35:16be particularly beneficial to people who have finished their working

0:35:17 > 0:35:26lives and are no longer so active. Thank you, thank you. Thank you. I

0:35:27 > 0:35:33really did have fun, honestly. It has made me feel a lot better. Have

0:35:34 > 0:35:41you always done this? Is it your way of life? Yes, and I think most of

0:35:42 > 0:35:48the people in Taipei, especially those who have retired. It keeps you

0:35:49 > 0:35:52young. In the hustle and bustle of the city, I never dreamt up there

0:35:53 > 0:35:56would be a place like this where so many people come. It shows it is not

0:35:57 > 0:36:00just me that cannot deal with the noise. It really was a breath of

0:36:01 > 0:36:06fresh air. I made a friend, I saw the trees again. I had the most

0:36:07 > 0:36:10relaxing tai chi. They do it all the time so it comes absolutely 100%

0:36:11 > 0:36:15natural to them. Some of them are very old, moving right young people.

0:36:16 > 0:36:22The park is full of amazing people, just finding their peace. Fishing is

0:36:23 > 0:36:28my tai chi. There is absolutely no way that I'm going to retire from

0:36:29 > 0:36:33fishing. What we do now is nothing compared to how hard we used to work

0:36:34 > 0:36:37so for us, this is retirement. I am exhilarated by it and it gives me a

0:36:38 > 0:36:48purpose in life. Tai chi and fishing are just the same to me.

0:36:49 > 0:36:59Trevor is 70 and Margaret is 64. They do not need money any more.

0:37:00 > 0:37:05They fish for life. It is not because of money. Just because of

0:37:06 > 0:37:12life, and because it is what they love. I don't know, it touched me

0:37:13 > 0:37:20the first time. They are each other, they have each other. I admire them.

0:37:21 > 0:37:31I admire their life, I admire their thinking.

0:37:32 > 0:37:38Both women have now spent several days living in each other's worlds.

0:37:39 > 0:37:43The city is a really exciting place to be but I have learned that I am a

0:37:44 > 0:37:47country mouse. The longest I have ever been away from Trevor is one or

0:37:48 > 0:37:51two nights at a push and he has never had to fend for himself. I

0:37:52 > 0:37:55have never had to fend for myself. I have never done anything where I

0:37:56 > 0:37:59have stayed in another place and had to look after my own passport, see

0:38:00 > 0:38:07to my own food, make my way around. I never thought I could do it and I

0:38:08 > 0:38:10can. City life isn't for me, but the city people, there is nothing wrong

0:38:11 > 0:38:15with it at all. They have got everything they need, open spaces,

0:38:16 > 0:38:17the food is fantastic, it just doesn't suit me at all. I needed to

0:38:18 > 0:38:33come here to make that decision. This is a big family here. There are

0:38:34 > 0:38:39only 68 people here but they know everything. They know each other,

0:38:40 > 0:38:50they know each family. This is the life. We don't have such a community

0:38:51 > 0:38:57in Taiwan. It is so nice, they have been so warm to me. I am so touched.

0:38:58 > 0:39:10It is a gift. I have this huge opportunity and it is so great. In

0:39:11 > 0:39:13Chinese, we say it is priceless. My hosts have been faultless. Scarlett

0:39:14 > 0:39:16has made sure I have not missed my family. But I have realised that her

0:39:17 > 0:39:22relationship with her mother is something I have never come across

0:39:23 > 0:39:25in my life. Scarlett and Cathy seem to push themselves. They are trying

0:39:26 > 0:39:31to make new shops, make new businesses. Scarlets seems to be

0:39:32 > 0:39:36just missing that little bit of communication between people.

0:39:37 > 0:39:44Apparently lots of young people here at her age keep everything to close.

0:39:45 > 0:39:47Everybody needs somebody they can tell. Good, bad or indifferent, you

0:39:48 > 0:39:55need somebody you can trust. She has opened up to me but she needs to

0:39:56 > 0:40:03open up just that little bit more. Determined to get to know Scarlets

0:40:04 > 0:40:06better... Let the old lady go first! Margaret has persuaded her to shut

0:40:07 > 0:40:16up shop and spend a day outside the city. So that is Scotland up there

0:40:17 > 0:40:22and that is England. That is where your money is right now. It's

0:40:23 > 0:40:26beautiful. In the UK, Cathy has come to visit Margaret's daughter. She

0:40:27 > 0:40:30will spend the day helping of the farm that Rachel runs, one mile from

0:40:31 > 0:40:43Sunderland Point. It is a very nice exercise. Better than Taipei in the

0:40:44 > 0:40:51gym. Down, peg. And that is how we do it. That was easy. This is nice

0:40:52 > 0:40:59in the fresh air, running together with animals. Tell me more about

0:41:00 > 0:41:04Margaret. North farm is a family affair. With the help of their three

0:41:05 > 0:41:09children, Rachel and her husband David rear sheep and beef cattle.

0:41:10 > 0:41:15Speak to them so you are not startled. Hello, I am Cathy. I am

0:41:16 > 0:41:28trying not to scare you. So please do not hear me. This is good. It

0:41:29 > 0:41:34smells good. This is good. Do your family help you? Do you have a

0:41:35 > 0:41:38daughter or son? I have a daughter. She works in your shop. Please don't

0:41:39 > 0:41:47say she works for me. She would never agree with that. She is my

0:41:48 > 0:41:56boss. Did you have fights with your mother? Are you close? Not really.

0:41:57 > 0:42:03You are nice girl, you are a nice girl. I am pretty sure that Margaret

0:42:04 > 0:42:10is doing a great job as a mother. She is tough. Shias, year, but very

0:42:11 > 0:42:16kind. She is kind but not tough? She is very fair, and very kind to the

0:42:17 > 0:42:26family, very kind to friends. Family means a lot to. I am just so

0:42:27 > 0:42:31touched. I should move here. I admire their relationship, yes. They

0:42:32 > 0:42:38are so understanding of each other. You have done very well helping us

0:42:39 > 0:42:41on the farm. I do my best to have a good relationship with my daughter

0:42:42 > 0:42:45because she is the only child I have. I hope I can learn to be more

0:42:46 > 0:42:59perfect. In Taiwan, Margaret and Scarlett

0:43:00 > 0:43:05have travelled 20 miles south of the city. The hot springs sit on the

0:43:06 > 0:43:09bank of the man she read and they naturally heated water can reach up

0:43:10 > 0:43:12to 80 Celsius. -- in and the naturally heated water can reach up

0:43:13 > 0:43:18to 80 Celsius. -- in Anji River. There we go. You look OK, look at

0:43:19 > 0:43:24this! Off we go. Don't get too close to the water. It's really hot.

0:43:25 > 0:43:32Shimmy up a little bit, go that way a little bit. I could live up here.

0:43:33 > 0:43:40But not in Taipei, right? Notts Taipei, but here. Why do you come

0:43:41 > 0:43:46here? To get away from the city. It is so relaxing here. Does your

0:43:47 > 0:43:48mother like the water? She has never been here. I have never done

0:43:49 > 0:43:54anything like this with her. We don't really have the time. Why

0:43:55 > 0:44:00don't you talk to your mother every day? Rachel rings me, or I will ring

0:44:01 > 0:44:04her. I guess you know more about my personality. I don't really share

0:44:05 > 0:44:11things, like what happens in my life on a daily basis. Would you like to

0:44:12 > 0:44:17share more? It is so normal for you and your daughter but it is not

0:44:18 > 0:44:19something. I have to really try. Practice makes perfect, Scarlett.

0:44:20 > 0:44:26The more you practice, the easier it will be. And it will just gradually

0:44:27 > 0:44:31blossom. Although we love each other very much, it is not like we don't

0:44:32 > 0:44:37love each other. We do have a very weird relationship, compared to a

0:44:38 > 0:44:42normal mum and daughter. After this trip, I would like to do more things

0:44:43 > 0:44:47with her. Your mother will be missing you. She will. I'm going to

0:44:48 > 0:45:03cry. It's OK. Me and my mum have never been to the

0:45:04 > 0:45:12night market together. We will never come here. I would love to spend

0:45:13 > 0:45:19more time with my mum because I know we are doing this, makes you realise

0:45:20 > 0:45:30how easy it is just to make time and just to have a day off. Let's close

0:45:31 > 0:45:35the shop. Yes. I have had an insight into how different lives can be.

0:45:36 > 0:45:41What I absolutely take for granted, I won't ever again. Scarlet told me

0:45:42 > 0:45:46she absolutely adores and loves her mum, but she's needed to talk to

0:45:47 > 0:45:50somebody how lonely she is. She needs to make a proper bond. You

0:45:51 > 0:45:55don't realise, you look from the outside, you see a career girl, full

0:45:56 > 0:46:01of it, laughing, smiling, going off and doing the buying. No, she is

0:46:02 > 0:46:07lonely. Well Margaret has gained an insight into how the Taiwanese

0:46:08 > 0:46:15relaxed... Kathy is finding out where the British go to unwind.

0:46:16 > 0:46:24Taipei, is totally different from Blackpool, for sure. Blackpool is

0:46:25 > 0:46:34nice, everybody is happy here. But after her day with Rachel, Kathy's

0:46:35 > 0:46:38thoughts keep to home. Every time I hear lots of children laughing, I

0:46:39 > 0:46:45always think I missed lots of things my daughter when she was little. I

0:46:46 > 0:46:55was always only working. We went to the beach only one time when she was

0:46:56 > 0:47:04probably two. Now, she is 33 years old already. We have missed lots. I

0:47:05 > 0:47:07don't think I have a bad relationship with Scarlet, not

0:47:08 > 0:47:16really. She knows I love her very much. I will try to talk more

0:47:17 > 0:47:27seriously with Scarlet. I should give everybody a hug when I get back

0:47:28 > 0:47:30to Taipei. It is Margaret's last day in Taipei, so she has asked James

0:47:31 > 0:47:40and Scarlet to take her on a final family trip. They are heading to a

0:47:41 > 0:47:44part of the city famous for its annual lantern festival. We can set

0:47:45 > 0:47:51of this lantern for you. A proper Chinese lantern. Each different

0:47:52 > 0:47:58colour mean the different wish, you write on it and set it off and ask

0:47:59 > 0:48:09the gods to do this for you. How beautiful is that. What does it say,

0:48:10 > 0:48:17James. Wish, world peace. Wish world peace. Yes. My opinion of Taipei has

0:48:18 > 0:48:21changed so much in this week, it has been an eye opener. I have learned I

0:48:22 > 0:48:30love adventure, but I love my Trevor more than anything. I am going to

0:48:31 > 0:48:35cry. I wish he had been here to share everything I have shared. He

0:48:36 > 0:48:40would have enjoyed it, but he looked Sunderland Point so much. I love it,

0:48:41 > 0:48:46but I can understand now why he really, really loves it. He doesn't

0:48:47 > 0:48:50need to go anywhere. I don't, I have had an adventure. The next time I

0:48:51 > 0:48:56have an adventure it will be the two of us. Won't be me on my own, it has

0:48:57 > 0:49:01been brilliant on my own, but I would like to have shared it with

0:49:02 > 0:49:08Trevor. When I see Kathy I am going to give her a big hug and to thank

0:49:09 > 0:49:13her for letting me get close to her daughter and James. I wish for

0:49:14 > 0:49:20Scarlet's future to embrace happiness, to open up and let people

0:49:21 > 0:49:26into her life. All our dreams are going up. James, come and give us a

0:49:27 > 0:49:30cuddle here. Thank you for everything you have done for me this

0:49:31 > 0:49:36week. It has been a fantastic week, it really has. Your hospitality has

0:49:37 > 0:49:42been fantastic. Look at our dreams going up there. I am going to Ms

0:49:43 > 0:49:48Margaret. We give each other a hug everyday. It is sweet how you remind

0:49:49 > 0:49:57someone constantly. We get lazy and it is so easy to forget. I think the

0:49:58 > 0:50:02need Scarlet to open up. Scarlet does love her mum, they just need to

0:50:03 > 0:50:12get a little bit closer than they are. Not as friends, but as mum and

0:50:13 > 0:50:16daughter. In the UK, Kathy is also taking part in a ceremony,

0:50:17 > 0:50:42Sunderland Point style. Kathy is going home tomorrow. But,

0:50:43 > 0:50:51somebody donated a picture and nearly everybody signed it. Come on,

0:50:52 > 0:51:28this is yours, Kathy. In Chinese? OK, thank you. Thank you

0:51:29 > 0:51:33so very much. This is so touching. I am so lucky to meet you all. You are

0:51:34 > 0:51:42so kind to me and your hospitality, you have given me a very strong and

0:51:43 > 0:51:46warm hug and kiss. I wish in the very near future, I will suddenly

0:51:47 > 0:51:53come and knock on the door, just like I knocked on the door and the

0:51:54 > 0:51:56first time I saw Margaret's house. Trevor, you are the second most

0:51:57 > 0:52:17handsome man in the world. You promise, you will give a big hug

0:52:18 > 0:52:26from me, to Margaret. I will miss all of you, very, very much. May God

0:52:27 > 0:52:48bless you all and keep this secret land for ever. I never had such fun

0:52:49 > 0:52:54in Taipei than in Sunderland Point. If in the future, I want to move

0:52:55 > 0:52:59into a small countryside. Not only is the firewall, I can feel their

0:53:00 > 0:53:09hearts are warm as well. This is so touching. -- fire warm. Just enjoyed

0:53:10 > 0:53:21every moment everybody will help you keep smiling face.

0:53:22 > 0:53:27Kathy and Margaret's week is up and it is time for them to say goodbye

0:53:28 > 0:53:36to their host families and head for home. I am more than looking forward

0:53:37 > 0:53:40to meeting Kathy. I have lived her life for a week and yet I don't know

0:53:41 > 0:53:47her. I am in her home with her husband and daughter and living her

0:53:48 > 0:53:56life. I am excited to go home today. I want to have a life just like

0:53:57 > 0:54:02this. Quiet. When Margaret left I was a bit worried, wondering what

0:54:03 > 0:54:07kind of person I was going to get. Thought I might end up with some old

0:54:08 > 0:54:13battle-axe, but what a lovely surprise when I met her. You cannot

0:54:14 > 0:54:19fault the woman, she is an absolute delight. She has been a resident of

0:54:20 > 0:54:24Sunderland Point. It has been nice to have Margaret here with us this

0:54:25 > 0:54:28week. I am sure my mum will have missed home. I hope after her trip

0:54:29 > 0:54:38she will consider taking more time for herself. Before returning to

0:54:39 > 0:54:47their families, the two women will have a chance to meet. The main

0:54:48 > 0:54:52thing I have learnt about Kathy, she is loved a great deal by her

0:54:53 > 0:54:55daughter and husband and she is a really busy person. But I feel she

0:54:56 > 0:55:00needs that little bit more family life to make the balance right for

0:55:01 > 0:55:08everyone. I want to say to her, how lucky she is. She has very nice

0:55:09 > 0:55:25family, who loves her very much. And she has so many friends who love her

0:55:26 > 0:55:30from their hearts. Margareta. Kathy. Did the people of Sunderland Point

0:55:31 > 0:55:38look after you? Yes. Everybody looked after me. They gave me the

0:55:39 > 0:55:49most hugs and kisses, the most in my life. Really? Yes. They are lovely,

0:55:50 > 0:55:56aren't they? Yes, such a small community. Would you ever consider

0:55:57 > 0:56:05moving to the countryside? Yes, I love the countryside. I will thinks

0:56:06 > 0:56:10seriously. How did you find city life? I found city life very hard,

0:56:11 > 0:56:16but then I went to the beautiful springs. You would love it. You

0:56:17 > 0:56:23should go with Charlotte. Say to her, take me where you took

0:56:24 > 0:56:31Margaret. I want to learn from you, because I admire you, you have such

0:56:32 > 0:56:36a good relationship with Rachel. Trevor cannot live without you, have

0:56:37 > 0:56:40you missed him? I missed him from the very minute I set off on the

0:56:41 > 0:56:45journey. I have missed him that much, I have realised I will never

0:56:46 > 0:56:50leave him behind. We will go on adventure together or not at all.

0:56:51 > 0:56:57Only just met it, but love you. You and your family. Goodbye. It was

0:56:58 > 0:57:01wonderful to meet Kathy. She is kind, warm and lovely, but I cannot

0:57:02 > 0:57:08wait to go home where I will stay until I can take Trevor with me.

0:57:09 > 0:57:13With Scarlets, I will ask her to invite me because I will be free any

0:57:14 > 0:57:21time. I will close the shop, just relax with her for just one hour,

0:57:22 > 0:57:22two hours of precious moments. Not only in Sunderland Point, I should

0:57:23 > 0:58:14make it in my own house. Next time... Two young men have a

0:58:15 > 0:58:20life changing decision to make. Wow! Do they take over the family

0:58:21 > 0:58:28business? Do I need 100% commitment from him? I do. Or follow their

0:58:29 > 0:58:32dreams. I am freezing my nuts off. But swapping an office chair for a

0:58:33 > 0:58:36saddle help them decide their own futures. I am not sure what I want

0:58:37 > 0:59:02to do for the rest of my life. In Japan, art and life are

0:59:03 > 0:59:08intrinsically connected. Understanding the principles
