0:00:12 > 0:00:13Welcome to Scotland.

0:00:13 > 0:00:14THEY LAUGH

0:00:15 > 0:00:16HE SCREAMS

0:00:16 > 0:00:17This is beautiful.

0:00:17 > 0:00:18HE SCREAMS

0:00:18 > 0:00:21Whee-hee!

0:00:21 > 0:00:23It's been a long, hard winter.

0:00:25 > 0:00:28But the summer season brings thousands of visitors

0:00:28 > 0:00:31to Scotland's top adventure playground.

0:00:31 > 0:00:32THEY SCREAM

0:00:33 > 0:00:37And for the people of Cairngorm, that brings new challenges.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43We've just discovered a gas leak.

0:00:43 > 0:00:44Woooo!

0:00:44 > 0:00:46Stop. Stop, stop, stop, stop.

0:00:48 > 0:00:49In this episode,

0:00:49 > 0:00:52we discover what it takes to make a living from the mountain,

0:00:52 > 0:00:55as Nick puts his team through their paces...

0:00:55 > 0:00:58Got to keep the guys fresh and on it.

0:00:58 > 0:01:00..Ruairi leaves the hill to take on paramedic duties...

0:01:00 > 0:01:03A bit wobbly on your legs.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06We'll get you sitting in the back here.

0:01:06 > 0:01:07HE IMITATES HORN BLOWING

0:01:07 > 0:01:11..and a strange herd of wild animals descends on Aviemore.

0:01:11 > 0:01:13- We're on safari! - SHE LAUGHS

0:01:13 > 0:01:17Welcome to summer on the mountain.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20Whoa! Windy up here.

0:01:34 > 0:01:36On Cairngorm, summer is well under way.

0:01:37 > 0:01:41The ski lifts may be closed but the adventure-seekers still come.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48It's just beautiful. When it's like this, it's amazing.

0:01:48 > 0:01:49Absolutely love it.

0:01:49 > 0:01:52Mike Gale first came to the mountain for the skiing,

0:01:52 > 0:01:56but like so many others, once here, he couldn't leave.

0:01:56 > 0:01:58Yeah, coming from Yorkshire originally,

0:01:58 > 0:01:59living next to a city in Leeds -

0:01:59 > 0:02:02when you compare it to this, I mean, there is no comparison.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04This is just amazing, you know?

0:02:04 > 0:02:08Mike's not alone in enjoying all that Cairngorm can offer.

0:02:08 > 0:02:11Most people who come to live here do so for the lifestyle,

0:02:11 > 0:02:14and the freedoms of the great outdoors.

0:02:17 > 0:02:19Quite lucky to live and work up here,

0:02:19 > 0:02:21despite the weather being bonkers.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47Enjoying the lifestyle is one thing

0:02:47 > 0:02:49but making a year-round living from the mountain

0:02:49 > 0:02:52takes ingenuity and determination.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56That was a bit bumpy!

0:02:57 > 0:03:00Fresh air doesn't put bread on the table.

0:03:02 > 0:03:06The plan now is to pack up and go back to the office and do some work.

0:03:06 > 0:03:09That was basically an extended lunch break. Good, eh?

0:03:11 > 0:03:1415 years ago, Mike and his partner Nick Etheridge turned their hobby

0:03:14 > 0:03:19into a business and started a winter adventure sports company.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22They quickly found they needed to diversify

0:03:22 > 0:03:23to see them through the summer.

0:03:25 > 0:03:29Now rafting, canyoning and kayaking are where they make their money.

0:03:30 > 0:03:35I think almost the early years we had, it was hard finding the work.

0:03:36 > 0:03:38Now the work is coming to us,

0:03:38 > 0:03:41so it's keeping up to the work that's probably the hardest thing.

0:03:41 > 0:03:44We're having to work like crazy through summer, nowadays.

0:03:44 > 0:03:46Oh, man, look at it. Stonking out there.

0:03:48 > 0:03:50Busy is good, but a fully booked summer does mean

0:03:50 > 0:03:54they don't have much time for their children and families.

0:03:54 > 0:03:56Holidays, when the kids are all off...

0:03:56 > 0:03:58And the wife works at the school

0:03:58 > 0:04:01so when she's on holidays, we're busy, so unfortunately, you know,

0:04:01 > 0:04:03the kids are never going to go on holiday with us.

0:04:03 > 0:04:05We're never going to take time off.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08BUZZING

0:04:08 > 0:04:10BLEATING

0:04:12 > 0:04:14BIRDS CHIRP

0:04:16 > 0:04:18Elsewhere in the valley,

0:04:18 > 0:04:22another small business is working hard to keep up with demand.

0:04:22 > 0:04:24The summer has been exceptionally busy this year.

0:04:24 > 0:04:30We've seemed to just not really had our feet on the ground at all.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33Polly and Ross Cameron run a self-catering business

0:04:33 > 0:04:36and offer weddings and workshops as well.

0:04:36 > 0:04:38We've taken on a lot and I think in some respects

0:04:38 > 0:04:40maybe a little bit too much, this year.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43We're starting to realise it's best to develop

0:04:43 > 0:04:45as you have the time to take new things on.

0:04:45 > 0:04:49Running a business from home sounds idyllic, but does mean

0:04:49 > 0:04:52it's difficult to separate work from bringing up their two young boys.

0:04:52 > 0:04:54'It's really hard because we're developing a business'

0:04:54 > 0:04:57which needed a lot of investment.

0:04:57 > 0:04:58Just always looking at -

0:04:58 > 0:05:01what money we've got to spend on the next stage.

0:05:01 > 0:05:04So we're finding that, right now, the boys ain't getting what they

0:05:04 > 0:05:07need and the business isn't getting fully what it needs.

0:05:07 > 0:05:11As part of their business, the couple are also involved in organising

0:05:11 > 0:05:14the Insider, a very local music festival.

0:05:14 > 0:05:19It's bringing brilliant music to beautiful places

0:05:19 > 0:05:25with great things to drink and eat. Basically.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28But it's also consistently run at a loss.

0:05:28 > 0:05:32This year, Polly and her fellow organiser, Gordy Riley,

0:05:32 > 0:05:34are taking an ambitious gamble.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37They plan to hold the festival in not one

0:05:37 > 0:05:40but five different locations across the Spey Valley.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43They've been planning it for six months.

0:05:43 > 0:05:44I think it's going to be great.

0:05:44 > 0:05:47I just love the fact that no-one really knows what they're in for.

0:05:47 > 0:05:50- Including us.- Including us, yeah.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54Now there's just 24 hours to go.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57Got a bit of a carload but should fit it in.

0:05:57 > 0:05:59Polly's still got a lot to do.

0:06:01 > 0:06:04Sausages for the barbecue.

0:06:04 > 0:06:06OK. Perfect.

0:06:06 > 0:06:07Thanks for the chips!

0:06:10 > 0:06:11Thank you.

0:06:11 > 0:06:16Because of this multiple-venue thing, the logistics are just a brain ache.

0:06:17 > 0:06:22About where everything should be and what needs to be there.

0:06:24 > 0:06:28Gordy and fellow organiser Ray Baker are off to dress the village hall,

0:06:28 > 0:06:31just one of the five venues.

0:06:31 > 0:06:32Window!

0:06:32 > 0:06:35Once you get to this stage, decorating stuff's a distraction.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37It's kind of fun.

0:06:37 > 0:06:40It's just nice not to be staring at a computer for a while.

0:06:40 > 0:06:45Ross is back at home, decorating their woods for the final location.

0:06:45 > 0:06:49Being organised, that's something we need to get better at.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52Like not getting to the top of the ladder with a lantern that

0:06:52 > 0:06:56doesn't have a hook on it. That's just not organised, is it?

0:06:58 > 0:07:04I've got to go to Mountain Cafe, who've loaned me a deep-fat fryer.

0:07:04 > 0:07:08- That is a life-saver. - All in working order.

0:07:08 > 0:07:12And then I have to drop beer off to One Pot Borrowed.

0:07:14 > 0:07:20And then I have to go up to Inshriach with 200 sausages and maybe some backup cider.

0:07:20 > 0:07:24I think they're going to need a bit more than I've given them already.

0:07:28 > 0:07:29Tick.

0:07:30 > 0:07:32Where next?

0:07:32 > 0:07:34The kitchen of the village hall.

0:07:34 > 0:07:36Hello?

0:07:36 > 0:07:38Drop off the deep-fat fryer...

0:07:38 > 0:07:39Smells delicious!

0:07:41 > 0:07:42Oh!

0:07:44 > 0:07:46..and grab a moment with the children.

0:07:50 > 0:07:53Gordy takes care of the beer delivery.

0:07:53 > 0:07:55Cleaned you out.

0:07:55 > 0:07:58Did we mention that the festival theme is a jungle safari?

0:07:58 > 0:08:01It looks great.

0:08:01 > 0:08:03I think once everything else is in place

0:08:03 > 0:08:05it's going to look pretty jungley. Which is the plan.

0:08:05 > 0:08:08All the stuff will pretty much be done tomorrow, now,

0:08:08 > 0:08:10all the little bits. The little snags.

0:08:10 > 0:08:13So hopefully we're going to go out for dinner now.

0:08:13 > 0:08:17LAUGHTER

0:08:26 > 0:08:28Aaaargh!

0:08:28 > 0:08:30Whee-hee!

0:08:35 > 0:08:39It's been four years since Mike and Nick opened the Zip Trek Park -

0:08:39 > 0:08:43an adrenaline junkie's version of a stroll in the forest.

0:08:43 > 0:08:46It's proved a major money-earner for them.

0:08:48 > 0:08:52But with success comes the problems of keeping it fully staffed,

0:08:52 > 0:08:54and keeping the staff fully trained.

0:08:54 > 0:08:57The enjoyment used to come from going out and being on the coalface,

0:08:57 > 0:09:00so to speak - taking the clients out, interacting with them,

0:09:00 > 0:09:01having a really good time.

0:09:01 > 0:09:04Now the enjoyment is any staff training or, you know,

0:09:04 > 0:09:07working with the guys that have been with us for a few years,

0:09:07 > 0:09:09and helping them develop.

0:09:11 > 0:09:12Wheee!

0:09:14 > 0:09:17Conner Black has spent a couple of summers helping out.

0:09:17 > 0:09:19That's rather special. Well done, buddy!

0:09:19 > 0:09:23Just braking him, so as the rope comes in,

0:09:23 > 0:09:25I'm just going to use my hands to gauge how much to grip it.

0:09:25 > 0:09:26That's how it works.

0:09:26 > 0:09:29He's learning the ropes on the zip lines

0:09:29 > 0:09:32and getting trained up to become a full-time instructor.

0:09:34 > 0:09:36OK to go, Conner.

0:09:36 > 0:09:37Whoops.

0:09:37 > 0:09:39RADIO BLEEPS

0:09:39 > 0:09:42Was that a "ugh" or a "yeah" or a "no"?

0:09:42 > 0:09:43'Yeah.'

0:09:43 > 0:09:44Yeah.

0:09:46 > 0:09:48He's changing the craic.

0:09:51 > 0:09:55- RESEARCHER:- And what happens if you're not here?- They hit the trees.

0:09:57 > 0:10:01To work full-time for the company, Conner needs to be able to

0:10:01 > 0:10:04take clients safely through a wide range of adventure sports.

0:10:04 > 0:10:09He's off to the river with Nick to hone a few more skills.

0:10:09 > 0:10:13Nick's a Level Three instructor with over 12 years' rafting experience.

0:10:13 > 0:10:16You couldn't get any better, I don't think.

0:10:16 > 0:10:19I think I'm probably at the top of my game in every respect,

0:10:19 > 0:10:23you know, physically as well as mentally.

0:10:23 > 0:10:25I'm just basically on it all the time.

0:10:27 > 0:10:30Conner's in the best possible hands.

0:10:30 > 0:10:32Conner, with us, has done a couple of summers now,

0:10:32 > 0:10:34and he's just slowly getting better.

0:10:34 > 0:10:36He just recently did his first raft guide training course.

0:10:36 > 0:10:39To start with, I'm keen for Charlie and Conner

0:10:39 > 0:10:42to guide the first section, if you can.

0:10:42 > 0:10:45Just get us in, get us warmed up, get us practised,

0:10:45 > 0:10:48and then we'll talk about how we run this first rapid, eh?

0:10:48 > 0:10:52In one week's time, Conner has a rafting assessment.

0:10:52 > 0:10:54Nick's working on his technique.

0:10:54 > 0:10:57So, you need to think, you know, shouting at various people

0:10:57 > 0:11:01in the boat, to stop paddling or paddle more, to correct the angle.

0:11:01 > 0:11:03'We just try to get them

0:11:03 > 0:11:07'a little bit more aware of the current doing the work for them.

0:11:07 > 0:11:09'So, a lot of the time,'

0:11:09 > 0:11:11we're trying to work against nature,

0:11:11 > 0:11:14and trying to work against the current to manoeuvre the boat,

0:11:14 > 0:11:16and lots of effort, lots of paddling,

0:11:16 > 0:11:18whereas I'm trying to get these guys a bit more subtle

0:11:18 > 0:11:21with their manoeuvres, to allow the current to do a lot of the work.

0:11:21 > 0:11:24It makes it a lot easier on yourself, and on your client.

0:11:24 > 0:11:26You're not shouting at them to paddle hard all the time.

0:11:26 > 0:11:28It makes it a bit easier, unlike that.

0:11:32 > 0:11:34If Conner gets through his assessment,

0:11:34 > 0:11:38he'll become a fully qualified rafting instructor.

0:11:38 > 0:11:40'Aye, there's a bit of experience there,'

0:11:40 > 0:11:43but they could have a lot more experience

0:11:43 > 0:11:44and be a little bit better.

0:11:48 > 0:11:50'The guys did really well. They're on it.

0:11:50 > 0:11:53'They're managing to get the raft were they need it to go.'

0:11:53 > 0:11:56Just honing their skills before the assessment next week.

0:11:56 > 0:11:57They've done really well.

0:12:01 > 0:12:03MUSIC: Jungle Boogie by Kool And The Gang

0:12:03 > 0:12:05# Get down Get down

0:12:05 > 0:12:07# Get down Get down... #

0:12:07 > 0:12:11Outside a local watering hole, a rare group of animals is gathering.

0:12:12 > 0:12:16It's Polly's big day - the start of the Insider Festival.

0:12:16 > 0:12:17Here we go.

0:12:17 > 0:12:19So, I've pieced an outfit together.

0:12:19 > 0:12:21Erm, that's the main thing, really.

0:12:21 > 0:12:23# Ah... #

0:12:23 > 0:12:27We're taking people on buses around little stops in Strathspey

0:12:27 > 0:12:28and then we're popping them on a steam train

0:12:28 > 0:12:30which we've chartered just for our guests.

0:12:30 > 0:12:34200 music lovers are paying between £50 and £450

0:12:34 > 0:12:37for this eclectic Highland safari,

0:12:37 > 0:12:40so Polly and Rae need it all to go smoothly.

0:12:40 > 0:12:42# Jungle boogie... #

0:12:42 > 0:12:45We've been working on it since about February,

0:12:45 > 0:12:47so it's been a lot of work, but I'm glad that we're past

0:12:47 > 0:12:50the spreadsheet stage and onto the fun bit.

0:12:51 > 0:12:54And I keep forgetting I'm dressed like a lion.

0:12:54 > 0:12:55# Jungle boogie... #

0:12:55 > 0:12:59With previous Insider Festivals failing to make a profit,

0:12:59 > 0:13:02Polly needs to make sure they sell plenty of beer tokens.

0:13:02 > 0:13:04This is the starting point for the safari,

0:13:04 > 0:13:07and, erm... Yeah, beer tokens.

0:13:07 > 0:13:10- Hi, how are you? You look wonderful. - I'm great. I'm Georgina's husband.

0:13:10 > 0:13:13- I know.- You know? - I can't really miss you.

0:13:13 > 0:13:15I knew you were coming as a meerkat.

0:13:15 > 0:13:18Meerkats, lions, hunters and hunted -

0:13:18 > 0:13:21they're up for the first leg of the safari.

0:13:21 > 0:13:24HE MAKES A TRUMPET NOISE

0:13:24 > 0:13:26All aboard!

0:13:26 > 0:13:27I need a shifty up.

0:13:27 > 0:13:30All aboard! Are you OK?

0:13:30 > 0:13:32I think so.

0:13:32 > 0:13:35# Whoa. #

0:13:45 > 0:13:48On the mountain, the team are building new fence lines

0:13:48 > 0:13:52for the winter ski runs, and for once, the weather is playing ball.

0:13:52 > 0:13:56It's about the first good day we've had in...

0:13:56 > 0:13:59ten years or something like that, I think.

0:13:59 > 0:14:02The weather's been really brutal, aye.

0:14:02 > 0:14:04This summer, it's just been...

0:14:04 > 0:14:06It's one of the worst I can remember.

0:14:06 > 0:14:08CHEERING Ruairi is back from his wedding,

0:14:08 > 0:14:12and despite the honeymoon accommodation,

0:14:12 > 0:14:13still happily married.

0:14:13 > 0:14:16The wedding all went well.

0:14:16 > 0:14:19The honeymoon was a blast. Had loads of diving. Oh, it's good.

0:14:19 > 0:14:22It progresses nicely into the winter, really.

0:14:22 > 0:14:25In the winter, Ruairi works as a ski patroller on the mountain,

0:14:25 > 0:14:27but like most of his colleagues,

0:14:27 > 0:14:30he needs to take on a number of jobs to survive year-round.

0:14:32 > 0:14:36'I think, to make a living, you need to be pretty flexible,

0:14:36 > 0:14:39'and you kind of need to work around the seasons.'

0:14:39 > 0:14:43Seasonal work isn't as reliable, but it does mean you can

0:14:43 > 0:14:46do for your work what you would like to do in your spare time,

0:14:46 > 0:14:48which is be in the wild, and in the mountains

0:14:48 > 0:14:50or in the glens.

0:14:50 > 0:14:53I'm up here on Thursday.

0:14:53 > 0:14:57I'm out counting the deer on the estate on the Friday with my dad,

0:14:57 > 0:15:00and then the Saturday and Sunday,

0:15:00 > 0:15:03I'm working with the medical side of things, with Ian.

0:15:13 > 0:15:14This weekend, there's

0:15:14 > 0:15:17a cross-country mountain bike championship in the valley.

0:15:17 > 0:15:22150 riders are racing a tough 40km circuit through the forest.
